TL;DR: Bought a 1969 Corvette 350/350/4sp one year ago. Spent $10K on the car, and $6,203.70 on every other ancillary cost. Was driveable by July, now at 799.3 miles. It drives like a tractor, but I enjoy every mile, despite averaging 8.3 MPG.
Here's a link to a gallery with every embedded photo.
Background
One year ago, I received a text from a friend that said "Planning on selling the 'vette. 1969. Asking strangers 12,5 but I'd give you the friend price of 10k if you're interested".
My brewery pal had mentioned his dad's old Corvette a few times over the past four or five years - including tales of taking it to the Turkey Rod Run in Daytona, and having it pinstriped by the infamous Greg "Coop" Cooper (who would then go on to paint Ed "Big Daddy" Roth's casket).
With the passing of his mother, he decided it was time to liquidate his parents' property, and the Corvette was a part of that process.
After posting on corvette and projectcar (and using the responses to convince my wife that this was likely the least irresponsible project car purchase we'll ever encounter), we made the trek to Brooksville, Florida to gather intel.
The car had been started about once a month since his father passed away in the early '00s, but was otherwise held captive in the barn for close to 20 years. Other than this, we had very little prior knowledge about the overall condition of the 50 year old 'plastic fantastic'. Our current situation necessitated that, regardless of the overall quality of the car, we needed it to start and run for at least 20 seconds to get it in our garage at home (Tip #1). Fortunately, a fresh battery, some starter fluid, and a bit of strategic percussive maintenance got the car turned over (albeit with a sticky float sending fuel everywhere).
My dad and I came back the following week with a trailer, addressed the sticking carb, and brought it home.
From here I built a spreadsheet to track expenses, project priorities (Tip #2), and eventual trips. My goal was to get the car driveable by Independence day, and to prioritize getting the car on the road vs. achieving perfection (Tip #3).
A full inspection of the car revealed:
- Brakes were toast (common on these cars)
- Carb was toast (modern gas is hell on older cars)
- Suspension was gone (though a modern monoleaf was installed in the rear, and it was fine)
- Interior needed to be stripped and cleaned
- Seatbelts were non-functional.
- All fluids/plugs/wires/belts were of unknown age and needed to be replaced.
Over the next 2 months, I divided my time into "sprints" (sorry, PMO nerds), never allowing myself to work for more than 90 minutes at a time to avoid burnout (Tip #4). I promised myself that if there was a specific tool for a job, I would buy/rent it to save the hassle. By June, I had replaced the entire suspension, rebuilt the brakes with modern O-rings, replaced every fluid, installed new plugs, wires, the carb, seatbelts, and wheel bearings.
On June 11th, it was ready for its first drive on public roads in nearly 20 years.
And it ended on a tow truck (Tip #5).
The old starter had failed, and couldn't hot-start the motor. A modern mini-starter was installed the following weekend, and the car has been 100% reliable ever since.
Driving experience
Since getting towed home in June, I have driven the car nearly 800 miles. It doesn't sound like a lot, but working from home means my DD (2019 Genesis G70), has only stacked 8,000 miles in the same length of time. I use it for nearly all of my in-town errands, and I take it to every local Cars + Coffee show I can attend.
The factory sidepipes (only offered on the C3 Corvette in 1969) are loud (surely aided by the aftermarket Cherry Bomb "mufflers"), and the crude sound is a reminder as to why X/H-pipes exist. Yes - they get hot, but a good exhaust wrap makes a big difference.
The short gearing from the optional Muncie M21 and the 3.70 rear gears make for a torquey town tripper, but does not make for a comfortable GT experience above 60mph. Overdrive must have been a lovely innovation.
The numbers-matching L46 350 smallblock has no shortage of power. I cannot be certain of the internals, but the exhaust chop suggests a mild cam is poking the push rods, and a crumpled machine shop receipt indicates a 0.030" overbore was performed in the late-90's.
The interior is spartan. The third generation Corvette - to me - takes a step back from the C2 in this regard. Seats are not bolstered, your 'glovebox' is more akin to a manilla envelope, and your storage is as small as it is inaccessible. A bevy of gauges is nice for diagnostics, but you begin to understand why the luxury automakers of the day were held in such high-regard. A/C would be nice in Florida, but the fresh-air "Astro Vents" are helpful.
The handling is adequate for daily driving, but I don't foresee any autocross days in this Corvette's future. The fiberglass body does little to subsidize the overall rigidity of the car. The large steering wheel seems to play a multi-step game of telephone to request changes in direction. I do commend Chevrolet for a few performance-minded innovations - the independent rear suspension inspires more confidence than a live-rear axle when hitting mid-corner bumps, and the 4-wheel disc brakes are anachronistically athletic.
Finally, I find the car to be truly beautiful. The C3 Corvette toes a lovely line between the retro-futurism of the chrome era thanks to its bumpers, and the swinging 70's with its incomparable curves and conspicuous color (Riverside Gold). There may be no better option when it comes to 'Attention per Dollar' than this car, which often overshadows quarter-million dollar restomod builds and modern exotics at local car shows.
Final notes, cost breakdown, and project car tips from an admitted novice
Here is a link to every single marginal cost associated with my project. This includes the car, the trailer, every part/tool, gas fill, and even lunch for my dad who helped me bring the car home.
Here's a categorized summary if you don't want to click through:
Total Cost of Ownership | $16,203.70 |
Category | Price |
One-Time Cost | $10,979.00 |
Consumable | $408.00 |
Insurance/Reg | $908.00 |
Parts | $2,625.74 |
Gas | $470.00 |
Tools | $379.99 |
Shipping | $67.97 |
Services | $365.00 |
Finally, some tips I'll be following on future projects:
- Have a minimum viable product in mind at purchase based on your individual situation. Our garage is at the top of a hill, and it would have been nearly impossible for us to get the car in the garage without having it run briefly. If your project candidate doesn't meet your very basic needs (condition, cost, proximity), it might be worth walking away.
- Make a priority list, Roadkill style, and stick to it. Do not let your scope creep, unless you discover something that truly impacts the driveability timeline of your project.
- An imperfect project car that you can DRIVE is infinitely more enjoyable than a slow trudge to perfection that does not escape the garage for years. Get it driving, take it to events, then work towards incrementally improving the experience.
- Take it easy - work in small sprints, and don't let yourself get burnt out. If you're doing the brakes, work on a single corner at a time. Make it so you are even more excited to work on the car the next day, as opposed to dreading it.
- Find a good tow driver before you need them, and don't necessarily rely on AAA/Hagerty for a free tow. We waited ~4 hours for our "free" Hagerty tow, who never arrived. We did a splash of research and found a local business who came out in under 15 minutes, and had us home for $80. Worth it.
- If you want a good deal on a car, you may be better served networking with local car folks than trying to score from an anonymous seller on Facebook/Craigslist.
- Find a forum. I am constantly referencing posts from Corvette forums, sometimes leveraging information posted from when I was in middle school. I called a gentleman who left his number in a post from 2006 - he answered and kindly walked me through parts of my brake rebuild.
I enjoy my Corvette. I think I'll hang on to it for a little while longer before considering a new weekend car. I'd love something wildly different. I'm currently considering some 90's JDM options (Skyline/NSX), or something European (360, 456, Gallardo, R8).
Cheers!

There's a patch of iron not far from me that I wanted to test the scanner on.
I set a range, I set a zone type, I set a decider and I linked em all up.
Essentially I wanted to slam a zone down on iron patches.
a few minutes later on 600 ups I had no zones on my iron patch.
I'm wondering if someone an explain tile range to me as the longer the range is, the longer it's gonna take to find a patch.
I also wonder once I have these zones marked, how I'm going to effectually use them.
Once I realised it was going to randomly iterate through the distance, I realised it could be a crazy number of ticks before an entire patch was marked, and that a) there was no way to tell if the patch was partially marked or not, and b) how many zones are in the zone I am trying to work with.
Obviously, I could focus the search in a smaller range sending out vehicles that the scanner then uses as a focal point for a scan. From here, once a single tile is identified with the resource I am looking for, I could design a circuit machine to increase the value of x until no iron was found, marking as it goes, and then reverse this function to decrease it to find the other edge of the patch for that y value.
I could then do the reverse for y values, and the whole patch would be marked. From here, if I want to be able to interact with the newly marked patch easily, it needs to be unique, right? Or is it possible to use a memory cell to store values for the maximum element number for individual patches? ie, 400 of a certain zone, 150 is the end of patch 1, 222 is the end of patch 2 etc, I could then do some more circuitry shit to....do something?
Or I could use a zone to pass to a seperate circuit machine that redesignates zones based on which ones are already in use, and track patches without the need for array slicing or something.
This is a stupid amount of effort to just identify patches to build on. I guess I could roll up a big miner blueprint since blueprints don't drop miners if there's no resource, but then the items around the un needed miners in the blueprint will still be dropped.
I'm thinking if a self building base is my goal, I need to write a new mod, because this is whack.
How's a resource patch scanner sound? Limited, visible range. plop it down and it does it's thing and has enableable behaviours that do different things via a UI, rather than a whole screen of circuit network shit.
EDIT: It's now kinda just plopping down zones wherever.

2022.06.08 18:04 ICrackedANut Pranay Pathole is just milking Elon. (source provided)
Sorry, long post.
Elon Musk is hated in the United States by the politicians. Some industrial leaders also are aware that he's doing it for marketing. However, Pranay Pathole lives in India where Elon's reputation isn't bad. Because Elon doesn't live in India, majority in India don't critique him for not paying taxes to fix the roads. Honestly, most in India don't gives a shit about space exploration and for a very good and obvious reason.
Pranay gets lots of PR out of posting Elon. He was often on the news and currently works for a pretty big company called Tata right out of college (as an Engineering Consultant, I believe. Tata is a car company in India, btw). I won't be surprised if Pranay actually doesn't believe that Elon is homeless and the smartest man on earth. Pranay was also invited to Elon's event (shows many dumb HR people that Pranay is a useful asset respected by EV leader. Keep in mind, most people and even HR don't do big research in to people like Elon, Steve Jobs, Mark, Jeff Bezos
Invitation by Tesla
https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6914799889390465024/
This guy didn't study in a good university and has no good projects on his Github
https://github.com/PPathole Try copying the title of the repository into Google and see how this guy just copy and pastes other people's code. Besides, many undergraduate students study ML and DL have done such projects in college. They are literally the go to projects to learn ML and DL.
In India, it really matters what university you studied in to get into Tata. (IIT or foreign universities are mostly preferred)
So obviously he's gonna milk Elon. This dude got on news by just spamming Elon's nonsense nonstop.
Elon Pranay Connection:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztvE-3RZc7w
Telling the media in India that Elon is the greatest engineer on earth. Why would Pranay know if Elon is the greatest engineer? Take a look at Pathole's Github and you'll see that his projects are super basic. Why would he be able to tell what's good engineering and what's bad? It's like asking a new software engineer if Linux Kernel is better or XNU (Apple).
https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6909416731547504640/
Discussing about the future of EV on National TV in India. Pranay is shown as Tata Consultant here. Dude with only a bachelor with only 1 year of working experience and as only a consultant (have never lead a project before) is giving advices on National TV.
https://youtu.be/Xqcev7R1Jyo?t=1085
So you see? This guy is milking Elon actually.
Be on national TV giving advices related to your field > Recognized by leader in your field > Networking > Work Experience > College > Personal Projects > GPA
The guy is gonna have a pretty big future in India considering Tata is the largest local vehicle company there.

M. Miscellaneous observation: using a wide angle lens to exaggerate physical distances in depicting emotional or psychological distance.
A. Introduction After more than a year of hesitation and indecision, I finally watched "My Mister."
I hesitated watching it because I read that it was a heavy drama; the last thing I needed in these times of COVID lockdowns and variants was a drama that would depress me even more.
What started to change my mind was seeing one of the drama's official posters; it showed IU and a guy on a sofa with one guy on the left and another guy on the right. They were all smiling, and I thought, "Why are they smiling? Isn't this supposed to be a heavy drama?" I found out that the two guys on the left and on the right are Ki-hoon and Sang-hoon, brothers of the ML Dong-hoon; they provide the comedic relief in this drama. (Of course, space cadet Yu-ra and the guys from the Sunday morning soccer club also add to the fun.) "My Mister" would have been so depressing if not for the antics of these characters in the side plots — Yu-ra being happy that Ki-hoon and his friends in the bar are
all failures, Sang-hoon eating Ki-hoon's food despite having the same food prepared by their mother, Ki-hoon wearing
expensive underwear so he won't be embarrassed when he dies, Sang-hoon and Ki-hoon in their mini-van, Sang-hoon setting up the mini-van on dates with good looking cars, etc.
Watching Dong-hoon plod through his daily life in going to a job that brings him no fulfillment (with
a cheating wife, to boot) somehow reminded me of the main character in Graham Greene's 1948 novel "The Heart of the Matter." It also reminded me of what Henry David Thoreau (?) said about most people leading lives of quiet desperation.
I got confused, however, in Ep. 1; why would Dong-hoon think that his life is petty and meaningless when he's an engineeteam manager working for a large company and his wife is a lawyer? I did some research, and I came across the article
The 'beauty of sorrow' in the TV masterpiece, My Mister by Brooks Riley (director, producer, film critic, editor, and screenwriter). Riley explains:
If there’s a double helix running through the Korean psyche, then it consists of two strands, han (한) and jeong (정) two concepts that seem to infuse Koreans with states of mind that their dark history of multiple occupations has delivered right to their genes.
B. Probably the most memorable shots and scene in “My Mister” come from Ep. 12 when Dong-hoon and his friends
walk Ji-an to her house.
Dong-hoon and
Ji-an meet Jung-hee, Sang-hoon, and his friends in front of the bar. As they
walk Ji-an to her house, they engage in some small talk and teasing. When
Ji-an replies to Jung-hee that she wants to be at their age because life might not be as hard as it is now for her, everyone stops and looks at
her. After quick cuts showing Dong-hoon’s friends and Sang-hoon, the camera then arcs around
Ji-an, showing the reactions of everyone around
her. With a smile, Jung-hee then takes
Ji-an’s arm and walks on, with Dong-hoon’s friends and Sang-hoon smiling in approval.
(The arc shot isn’t smooth and is a bit wobbly in keeping with the emotional tension of the scene.)
Later, as Dong-hoon, Sang-hoon, and his friends leave,
Ji-an softly tells them, “Thank you.”
This scene (accentuated by the wobbly arc shot) is deeply moving because it was probably the first time
Ji-an experienced being immediately accepted and cared for by people who were complete strangers to
her.
C. In numerous shots, we are shown Ji-an’s sneakers (most probably her only pair of shoes). What convinces me that they symbolize her dreary life are the pedestal shot and cross dissolves in Ep. 10.
In this scene, Ji-an waits on the street for Dong-hoon to give him a new pair of slippers.
In the first shot, the camera pedestals (moves) up from Ji-an’s sneakers to her face.
The cross dissolves then show closeups of Ji-an’s face and her sneakers, combined with wide shots of Ji-an on the street.
(What if the sneakers were PPL? It still wouldn’t change my belief that they symbolize Ji-an’s dreary life.)
Note: A pedestal shot is different from a tilt shot. In "pedding up" or "pedding down," the camera moves up or down parallel to the subject being filmed. For more information, please read
"What is the Pedestal Camera Movement?" Speaking of cross dissolves, another scene when the drama effectively uses them is in Ep. 10 after Dong-hoon found out about Yoon-hee’s affair. He stops doing some household chores, slumps down, and stares off into space. Even without dialogue, that scene is so moving and captures Dong-hoon’s misery so well.
D. The desaturated colors from scenes in Eps. 1-5 change in Ep. 6 when the colors become brighter and deeper. Ep. 6 marks that part of the drama when things seem to change for the better in Ji-an’s and Dong-hoon’s lives. And that is done when the color palette changes.
Note: The choice of color palettes is not part of cinematography; it's primarily decided upon during post production.

E. “My Mister” uses a lot of split screens.
The split screen that I like the most comes from Ep. 10; previous to the scene of Joon-young meeting with the former police detective, the detective went to see Kwang-il and showed him pictures of Ji-an and Dong-hoon. In the scene when Joon-young sees the picture of Dong-hoon, the split screen shows
Kwang-il’s surprised reaction when he sees the piggyback ride (something which we didn’t see in the previous scene).
In Ep. 14, Ji-an uses a public pay phone to call up Dong-hoon; that scene is marked by numerous split screens. Note: Although the cinematographer takes all the shots, the split screens are not done in-camera; they're added during post production.

F. Flashing/flickering lights and desaturated colors during flashback scenes
Except for Ep. 16, the flashback scenes have desaturated colors and are marked by flashing or flickering lights as you can see in these GIFs:
1;
2.
In Ep. 16, while Ji-an is watching the football game on the parking lot, she remembers
her last visit with her grandmother.
The shots have soft focus, but the colors are bright. G. Motion blur (aesthetic blur)
“My Mister” uses “motion blur” several times, with the first instance in Ep. 1, if I remember correctly. In Ep. 9, the scene shows the young Ji-an who's
feeling lonely because no one came to her graduation.
She’s standing still while the celebrating students and their parents around her are shown in motion blur. The most significant uses of motion blur is near the end of Ep. 6 when Dong-hoon and Ji-an are in a bar.
You can see the blur when Dong-hoon drinks his wine and then pours the cup down. The next shot is of the bar’s exterior where the people walking are shown in motion blur. After the shot of the wine glass, there’s another motion blur as Dong-hoon raises the glass and drink again. In the next shot, the camera trucks (moves parallel) to Dong-hoon, who becomes in focus. In this GIF, you can see the blur again when Dong-hoon drinks his wine and then puts the cup down. The camera then trucks (moves parallel) to Ji-an, who becomes in focus as Dong-hoon becomes out of focus. Note: Motion blur can be created in-camera or added during the post production.
Relevant resources:
(1)
“What is Motion Blur, Is Motion Blur Good & Why Does it Happen?” (Studio Binder): Motion blur is the visual streaking or smearing captured on camera as a result of movement of the camera, the subject, or a combination of the two. The human eye naturally registers motion blur in real life, so a subtle blur in film often mimics reality better than if it were absent. When applied intentionally, this effect may be referred to as aesthetic blur.

“Using Motion Blur for natural Movement” (3)
“Motion blur photography and shutter speed explained” (4)
“Blur and shutter angle explained” H. Rack focus: A K-drama isn’t a K-drama if it doesn’t have rack focus shots.
(1) In Ep. 10, Ji-an and Dong-hoon
take her grandmother to the assisted living facility. This deeply moving scene (without any dialogue) between Ji-an and her grandmother is reinforced by the use of several rack focus shots.
In the taxi, her grandmother is in focus while Ji-an is out of focus. The grandmother turns and she becomes out of focus, and Ji-an becomes in focus. In this GIF, the grandmother becomes in focus while Ji-an remains out of focus. From the reverse angle, the grandmother is out of focus while Ji-an is in focus. Then, Ji-an is first out of focus and then becomes in focus. From the reverse angle, the grandmother is in focus while Ji-an is out of focus. (2) Ep. 9: Yoon-hee gets a phone call.
As she becomes out of focus, the framed family portrait on foreground (frame right) becomes in focus. (3) Ep. 6:
Ji-an (foreground, frame left) is in focus while Dong-hoon (background) is out of focus. Ji-an becomes out of focus while Dong-hoon becomes in focus. (4) Ep. 6:
Dong-hoon is on the subway train. As he becomes out of focus, his reflection becomes in focus. (5) Ep. 5:
Dong-hoon (foreground) goes to the public pay phone. As Yoon-hee approaches him from frame right, they become out of focus as Ji-an (deep background) becomes in focus.) I. Camera shake to depict or reinforce tension in a scene
(1) Ep. 10: Yoon-hee is overcome with guilt after
finding out from Ji-an that Dong-hoon knows about her affair with CEO Joon-young.
The subtle camera shake reinforces her emotional tension. (2) Ep. 9: Kwang-il threatens
to kill Ji-an and Dong-hoon if his plan to extort money from him doesn’t work.
The camera noticeably shakes to reinforce Ji-an’s emotional tension in her closeup and especially in the wide shot showing her in front of her house. J. Some elegant push in and pull out shots from “My Mister”
Push in
Ep. 9: Ji-an plans to give Dong-hoon
a new pair of office slippers, but she doesn’t have the chance to give it when Dong-hoon becomes cold towards her on the way home and refuses to buy her food. While listening in through the spy app and by calling up Kwang-il, she finds out that Dong-hoon has found out that she stole the bribe gift certificates. Later on, she becomes upset when Dong-hoon can’t give his team members a reason for hiring her when others are more qualified. As Ji-an stands on the street, the camera pushes in on her to reinforce her emotional tension over what has been happening between her and Dong-hoon. Pull out
Ep. 12: Director Yoon tried to make Ji-an admit that
she has an illicit relationship with Dong-hoon. But, as Chairman Jang listens, Ji-an answers that she will always be grateful not only to Dong-hoon but also to Saman E&C. Later on, Ji-an and Dong-hoon have some drinks at a restaurant.
At the end of the scene, they’re framed by the restaurant’s window as the camera slowly pulls out; the framing and the pull out give the scene a relaxed, soothing vibe of two kindred spirits enjoying each other’s company. Explanation of the terms “push in” and “push out”:
The article
“Types of Camera Movements in Film Explained: Definitive Guide” (Studio Binder) defines what a push-in shot is: “A push-in moves the camera closer to a subject typically with a dolly camera movement or Steadicam. Push-ins can draw the audience’s attention toward a specific detail. Filmmakers also push-in toward characters to try and infer what is occurring internally. This can be a reaction, thought process, or internal conflict.”
Push in shots are used to “create subtle intimacy, tension rising, and importance.” From
“The Push-in” (YouTube video): “The Push-In, sometimes called the Character Dolly, is a camera move where the camera dollies forward toward the subject of the shot. A short push-in is like an exclamation mark. A long, slow push-in builds drama and heightens the emotional meaning of the scene. The push-in is a powerful cinematic tool for heightening tension and dramatizing a revelation, and it’s one of the fundamental techniques of the cinematographer and layout artist.”
From
“The Effects of a Push in vs. Pull out” (Cinematography): “When the camera pulls out from a character to show empty space around them, it creates a feeling of isolation and loneliness, abandonment, or rejection.”
K. “Visual cues” are explained in an excellent series of articles from “My Drama List” written by someone with the username “3GGG.”
Popular Visual Cues found in K-Dramas, Part 1: visual ways to establish a conflict, division, or fight between two or more characters Popular Visual Cues in K-Dramas, Part 2: boxing to establish a character’s vulnerability, solitude, or fear; comfort and respite; change; danger; showdown Popular Visual Cues in K-Dramas, Part 3: Dutch angle Popular Visual Cues in K-Dramas, Part 4: Interpersonal cues (using cues simultaneously or one after another) These MDL articles on visual cues will help you better “read” K-dramas. (I prefer, however, the term “framing” instead of “boxing.”)
Examples of lines that establish a conflict, division, or fight between two or more characters:
1;
2;
3;
4;
5;
6;
7 Example of boxing (framing) to establish a character’s vulnerability: Ji-an
gets paid by CEO Joon-young to get Dong-hoon kicked out of the company. But in this scene from Ep. 5, she sees Dong-hoon
give her beloved grandmother a piggyback ride.
Her dilemma or vulnerability is reinforced by the frame that boxes her in. Example of boxing (framing) to establish comfort and respite When two or more characters are within a frame, it could mean either unity or confrontation, depending on the context:
1;
2 L. Symbolic uses of reflections, glasses, and mirrors in “My Mister”?
“My Mister” has numerous shots of Ji-an or Dong-hoon with their reflections on certain surfaces as you can see in the following GIFs:
1;
2;
3 The article
“Seeing Through a Glass, Darkly” (November 1, 2018) is from a Wordpress website dedicated to discussions about “My Mister.” The article makes some interesting points about the symbolic uses of reflections, glasses, and mirrors in this drama. I don’t agree with everything the article says, but it does have some great insights.
M. Miscellaneous observation
In Ep. 10, Ji-an and Dong-hoon bring her grandmother to
an assisted living facility. Afterwards, they ride a bus back to Seoul. They sit separately, with Dong-hoon near the front of the bus and Ji-an near the back.
At the end of the scene, the cinematographer uses a wide angle lens; notice that the space inside the bus and the distance between Dong-hoon and Ji-an are exaggerated (as if they’re really far apart). I think the cinematographer, as guided by the director, purposely used a wide angle lens to show the big emotional and psychological gap between Ji-an and Dong-hoon
(she’s still working for CEO Joon-young, and Dong-hoon doesn’t know that Ji-an knows about his fight with Kwang-il).
Notes: (1) As I have stated in my previous discussions, I’m a photographer, not a cinematographer or even a film major. Those of you who have better understanding of cinematography should feel free to correct inaccuracies or errors in this discussion.
(2) Some of my previous discussions on the cinematography of K-dramas:
“Hospital Playlist” Season 1 (comprehensive analysis of its distinctive cinematography) “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” (comprehensive analysis of its gorgeous visuals and stylish cinematography) “Hotel Del Luna” (comprehensive analysis of its gorgeous cinematography) “The Crowned Clown” (comprehensive analysis of its elegant cinematography) “Kingdom: Ashin of the North” (comprehensive analysis of its compelling cinematography) “Beyond Evil” (brief analysis of its solid cinematography) "My Name" (comprehensive analysis of its compelling cinematography) "True Beauty" (comprehensive analysis of its fine cinematography) "Into The Ring" aka "Memorials" (comprehensive analysis of its quirky but brilliant cinematography “Flower of Evil” (first impressions of its excellent cinematography) “Flower of Evil” (using visual cues for my final impressions of its excellent cinematography) “Start-Up” (comprehensive analysis of its excellent cinematography) “The Tale of Nokdu” (brief analysis of its excellent cinematography) “When the Camellia Blooms” (frequent use of low angle shots distinguishes its cinematography) "Kingdom 2" (some reflections on its brilliant cinematography) How the cinematographer of “Mr. Sunshine” showed a character who’s facing a crisis, loss, despair, or confusion Cinematography: Lines, triangles, and other shapes from "Goblin" and other K-dramas and movies “Encounter” (some lessons from its excellent cinematography) "Brilliant Legacy" aka "Shining Inheritance" (brief analysis of its excellent cinematography) "Sisyphus: The Myth" (comprehensive analysis of its excellent cinematography with arc shots, tracking shots, rack focus, push in, pull out, camera roll, whip pan, shaky cam, etc) Doors and their symbolic or meaningful uses in “Stranger” Season 1 "Reply 1988" (first impressions of its excellent cinematography; Wes Anderson’s influence on the drama’s cinematography) (3) This post is a bit long; if you got tired reading it, you can energize yourself by listening to Band-Maid, an all-female Japanese band that’s considered as the best hard rock band in the world today:
"Freedom" (Band-Maid’s anthem, with a fantastic drum solo)
"Manners" (if you prefer a great bass line and a mix of rock, blues, and jazz)
"Thrill" (their first music video)
"Daydreaming" (power ballad; watch out for the guitar solo)

2021.06.05 02:08 ensluck Ethereum Layer 2 Is Becoming Liquid
Paragism Ethereum has a robust decentralized security model and that’s why it has remained the preferred blockchain for the DAPP developers but the base layer scalability is a big issue for Ethereum. Ethereum 2.0 is going to solve many problems but the roadmap seems to be very long. While Ethereum has become the most popular value settlement layer with the exponential growth of transactions, the arbitrary gas fee of Ethereum often makes the network unusable for retail investors. The user experience isn’t really good for many Ethereum DAPP users. A blockchain application can’t be unnecessarily expensive and some use cases like blockchain games make no sense with the current speed of transactions or transaction fees. A blockchain must be scalable enough to match the throughput of Paypal or Visa for mass adoption and nobody will like to pay a $50 fee for doing a transaction of $100. Is such scalability achievable in the base layer of Ethereum? No, it’s a distant dream.
Ethereum Layer 2 solutions aim to make Ethereum scalable without compromising the decentralization and security. Layer 2 solutions are basically off-chain solutions and they take away the transactions from the main chain just like the
Lightning Network of Bitcoin. Many developers are currently working on Ethereum Layer 2 solutions and a few projects have already delivered working platforms. While many Layer 2 solutions have their own issues and vulnerability, the ‘world computer’ definitely needs Layer 2 to fulfil its original vision. Let’s try to analyze the state of adoption or potential of adoption of a few popular Layer 2 projects.
Polygon
Vitalik Buterin proposed Plasma architecture in 2017.
Plasma is a side-chain solution that creates side-chains and bonds them with the main chain.
Polygon is based on Plasma architecture. Withdrawal time from Plasma is one week and that’s a big problem. It’s really painful for DAPPs or users who are looking for instant withdrawal. The
PoS bridge of Polygon, launched sometime back, provides PoS security and faster exit with one checkpoint interval. Polygon is seeing great traction nowadays and it’s the number 4 DeFi platform as per
defipulse with $7B+ TVL. Mark Cuban, the billionaire investor, has recently
invested in Polygon and the price of MATIC, the native token of Polygon, soared up heavily. Polygon has been integrated with many popular platforms like Opensea, Sushiswap etc. and the Ethereum users have embraced the network to escape from the high gas fee.
The exchanges supporting withdrawal and deposit for Polygon (mainnet) are MXC, Ascendex, Okcoin. Optimism
Optimism was founded by some former Plasma group researchers in 2019 to implement an Ethereum scaling solution –
Optimistic Rollup. Optimism is a non-profit organization as of now. The construction of Optimism is similar to Plasma and mimics the almost infinite scalability of Plasma to run an EVM compatible Virtual Machine called
OVM (Optimistic Virtual Machine). Optimism offers almost feeless and instant transactions. Synthetix, a popular DEX, is working with Optimism to offer easy Layer 2 migration. Staking on Synthetix is already live on L2 testnet of Optimism experimentally. Here is the official blog
post of Sytnthetix which describes why Optimism was chosen. Uniswap has also declared to adopt Optimism. Optimism isn’t completely production-ready now.
Arbitrum
Arbitrum is an open-source platform built by Offchain Labs. Arbitrum uses
Optimistic Rollup protocol. The official blog
post says: “An Arbitrum Rollup chain is a super scaled Layer 2 (L2) chain. Like all Rollups, the Arbitrum Rollup chain is built on top of and secured by the Ethereum blockchain, and all transaction data is logged on Ethereum. From a user and developer perspective, interacting with Arbitrum feels exactly like interacting with Ethereum.” Migrating contracts from Ethereum to Arbitrum is damn easy. Bancor contracts are already live on Arbitrum
testnet. A recent Uniswap poll launched by Compound founder Robert Leshner signals Uniswap
may accept Arbitrum.
Okex has declared to support direct deposits and withdrawals onto Arbitrum. StarkWare
StarkWare is powering DeFi platforms of
DeversiFi &
dydx currently. StarkWare uses STARK technology and provides cryptographic proofs that are zero-knowledge, succinct, transparent and post-quantum secure. The L2 scalability solution of StarkWare can be deployed as ZK-Rollup or Validium.
zkSync
zkSync is Matterlab’s trustless scaling & privacy engine built on
ZK-Rollup. The project has given emphasis to create nice user and developer experiences. The official blog
post says: “zkSync is designed to bring a VISA-scale throughput of thousands of transactions per second (TPS) to Ethereum while keeping the funds as secure as in the underlying L1 accounts and maintaining a high degree of censorship-resistance.” zkSync has been integrated with Gitcoin for easy payment.
Loopring
Loopring uses
ZK-Rollup. The ZK-Rollup of Loopring has a maximum throughput of 2K TPS on ETH 1.0. On proposed ETH 2.0, the max throughput is going to be rocking 20K+ TPS. The Loopring V2 DEX was launched some months ago and their liquidity mining attracted significant users.
This writeup doesn’t aim to enlist all Ethereum Layer 2 projects but the cited projects have generated buzz. While we are hating the congestion of the Ethereum network, the congestion itself is proof of demand. If people can trade on Ethereum DeFi and NFT platforms with such a high gas fee,
Layer 2 solutions can definitely draw a huge number of users by providing instant economic finality and cheap transactions. It is important to note that all Layer 2 solutions settle the final value on the Ethereum blockchain only. So, they basically don’t compete with Ethereum. The Ethereum developers can migrate their DAPPs to Layer 2 networks with minimal coding and thus it keeps the migration process smooth. The liquidity on Layer 2 was a big problem earlier but as big centralized exchanges (CEXs) and popular decentralized exchanges (DEXs) are supporting the Layer 2 phenomenon, mass adoption is bound to happen. The competition between Layer 2 Ethereum projects and Ethereum killers is going to be very exciting in the near future. The large-scale production-ready Layer 2 projects are already showing high promise.

2020.08.27 21:43 technodotacademy What is new for admins in Google for Education this fall
Educators, students and families have quickly adjusted to distance learning, and administrators have played a critical role in this success. Over the past few months, they’ve equipped teachers and learners with the tools they need. Google listened to what admins need to save time and meet new demands, and have made improvements so they are better equipped to keep supporting educators and students this school year.
Powerful insights in Classroom Coming soon, admins who want to troubleshoot Classroom issues will be able to access Classroom audit logs directly from the Admin console. With audit logs, they’ll be able to pinpoint events such as who removed a student from a class or who archived a specific class on a specific date.
Especially now, Google heard that admins want dashboards that give them detailed visibility into usage and adoption of Classroom so they can provide targeted training to teachers, or help intervene with students who aren’t engaged. At schools with G Suite Enterprise for Education, admins will soon be able to automatically import Classroom logs into BigQuery, where they can get much deeper insights into who is using Classroom and how they’re using it. With just a few clicks, they can also create a customizable dashboard on Data Studio, giving them a slate of engagement metrics, including metrics like how many assignments were created, submitted, or graded, and will be able to pivot by date, organizational unit, specific instructors, or specific students.
Moderation tools for Meet Meet has become a common tool for teachers and students to connect with each other. As more people rely on Meet, the need for improved moderation tools has grown.
Admins can already get insights into how students and teachers interact with Google Meet using the Meet Quality Tool within the Admin console. Admins can see an overview of meeting metrics, find and debug meetings, view network statistics (like jitter, packet loss and congestion), or view system (CPU) statistics. They can now delegate access to the tool to other people in their organization using a custom privilege in the Admin roles section. Plus, just like in the Classroom, admins can access Meet audit logs in the Admin console.
Admins also have the ability to enable or disable Meet independently of Chat. And now, Meet blocks, anonymous attendees, by default for Edu domains; admins have the option to change this setting as needed.
Better workflows for G Suite As schools increasingly use G Suite to support distance learning, they’re looking for easier ways to communicate and share knowledge. To improve school-wide or small group communication, admins can use the improved Google Groups experience to create and manage groups. Also, a new beta will allow teams to share specific folders within a Shared Drive to help admins make sure that the right information can be shared with the right people.
Smart compose, which automatically suggests words and phrases, and AutoCorrect, which corrects misspellings or grammar issues, are both now available in Docs for education customers. By the end of this month, admins will be able to disable both SmartCompose and AutoCorrect if they choose.
A simpler way to trial G Suite Enterprise for Education Lastly, admins who are interested in starting a trial with G Suite Enterprise for Education will soon be able to do so directly without support from a reseller. In order to activate the one-time 30-day trial, admins can enrol from the Billing section of the G Suite Admin console and provision up to 10 team members.
Admins make Google for Education tools work smoothly behind the scenes, so educators and students can get down to work. Google hopes the new features smooth out the rough spots in the admin workday. If you’d like to learn more about all the new products and features, watch keynote session from The Anywhere School event.

2019.07.14 07:12 ese003 Outlook.com sends 100% legitimate mail from 100% legitimate server always to spam folder
Has anyone found a backdoor contact to get Microsoft to remove an IP from their internal "send directly to spam folder" table? All the the official channels that I could find just spit back boilerplate. They don't even acknowledge they are the source of the problem. My server has never sent a single spam. It has full SPF/DKIM/DMARC. Not on any public RBL. Sends find to Gmail and essentially any other service not run by idiots. I'm getting the same run-around from Yahoo.

2018.10.03 03:13 bshawwwwwww Master List Of Left-Wing Youtube AND Podcast Channels - REVISED
Master List Of Left-Wing Youtube AND Podcast Channels
***NOTE: after a discussion with the mods I’ve taken out the original note here. Suffice to say the reason I put together this revised list was to add a number of channels I felt had been unfairly excluded. I’ve taken out a few controversial channels to comply with the mods request that i do so, as well as link to OP at his request. I thank the mods for allowing me to keep the rest of the channels I’ve added to the list.
Newly Added channels not on OP:
Tovarich Endymion, BrendanMccooney, Red Star Video, Claudia Brown, SJW101, azureScapegoat, Benji Adam Wiskettes, DemocraticSocialist01, Comrade Hakim, FinnishBolshevik, Bat’ko The Manarchist, ProSocialism, Flea Market Socialist, KnowingBetter, and a few others!
As a socialist I don't believe masterlists should constitute any kind of intellectual property that should be protected, especially in context of a masterlist that is being shared to spread awareness of leftist channels shared with the leftist community. I believe the channels I added deserve recognition. I don’t mind sharing editing with the community — let me know what you’d like to add and I’ll try my best to accommodate within the word limit here. I’ve had to take out a few of the film related channels to make room for more directly politically related podcasts.
I included the Podcast section in post and just removed the NEWS section of the original post, so that can be found in the OP (link in title). Also please note that to accommodate more podcasts and other more directly related leftist channels, I’ve had to remove some more film focused channels. Those can be found on the OP. Thanks comrades.
---------- please give these channels as much help as you can by subscribing and watching their content. We need these things to expand as much as possible if we don't want to entirely lose YouTube to the far-right.

Potholer54: A journalist and former geologist debunks climate change denial and other science myths ranging from that of right-wing YouTubers like Steven Crowder and Stefan Molyneux to major denier figures like Lord Christopher Monkton and Patrick Moore. Makes an enormous point of referencing scientific papers and consensus on these issues, but addresses these subjects in a very easy to understand way. Perhaps my favourite of all the YouTubers on this list.
Recomended video:
Top 10 climate change myths Three Arrows: Debunks inaccurate takes on history by the right wing. Uses a similar longform format to Shaun's videos, and is also very well-sourced with some of the mods of the Ask Historians subreddit acting as researchers.

Recommended video: Sargon, collectivism and the Skeptic Community

Recommended Video: Law Of Value: Introduction

Recommended Video: Mao Did More Good Than Harm (Note: This video is mirrored, the video was taken down from his channel for some reason).
BadMouseProductions: Similarly primarily debunks bad understands of socialism from the right, but also does videos explaining socialist concepts and debunking bad right wing takes on other topics like climate change.
Recommended video:

MILO YIANNOPOULOS: EXPOSED! Comrade Hakim: Noteworthy for a variety of videos discussing everything from the problem with worker co-ops, healthcare, how socialism gives a better quality of life, and one must watch video in particular on the subject of capitalism lifting people out of poverty. As an addendum to that video, I also recommend the Guardian Article “
Aid In Reverse: How poor countries develop rich ones” Recommended Video: Capitalism HASNT Lifted People Out Of Poverty
Cuck Philosophy: Explains topics in moral and political philosophy, does Marxist analyses of popular culture, but has perhaps best contributed to left-wing YouTube by doing long, in-depth deconstructions of the way figures like Jordan Peterson, Sam Harris and Steven Hicks misunderstand philosophy.
Recommended video:
A Critique of Sam Harris' 'The Moral Landscape' EssenceOfThought: Left-wing atheist channel that goes against what has become typically expected from the 'skeptic' community and actually critiques not only arguments from religious apologists, but also those who argue against non-binary gender, trans identities and other LGBT rights.

The channel

Recommended video:
The Kunst Saga How The Right Wing Views Modern Art
In Otter Words: Hasn't uploaded in a year but hopefully will again soon since his output has been very underrated. Debunks bad right-wing criticisms of feminism and the trans rights movement. I'm shocked no bigger YouTubers have seized on his discovery that Ben Shapiro has been lying about the trans suicide rate.
Recommended video:
Ben Shapiro and the Transgender Suicide Rate

Reasonable Questions For Anti-SJWS and
Formal Debate: Sargon of Akkad vs Kristi Winters

Similarly to Contra (whom she has recently done a video criticising) Maria often rebuts anti-SJW points against socially progressive ideals, having done videos addressing fat shaming, the placement of asexuality on the LGBT spectrum, and the commodification of female beauty.
Recommended video:
Roaming Millennial: Hates Women. Hates Facts.

Recommended Video:
Ben Shapiro doesn’t understand intersectionality - Media essayists and critics:
Big Joel: Does video essays on film, TV and video games with a very political slant. Analysing the Christian propaganda of the God’s Not Dead series, the preachy style of 1950s propaganda shorts, and what he believed to be the shallow politics of Black Mirror (as well as other less political analyses of movies like The Room and Disney films). He has recently branched out into much more overtly political content, creating videos which refuted arguments in Cassie Jaye’s men’s rights film ‘The Red Pill’ and the videos of Prager University.
Recommended video:
The Red Pill: The Strange Art of Men's Rights Activism (Part 1) donoteat01: Brought to my attention through comments. If you're interested in class analysis this series will be perfect for you.
Recommended video:
Cities: Skylines Power, Politics, & Planning: Episode 3: Gentrification
Folding Ideas: While not too overtly political, a leftist sense of justice and morality is pervasive in all Dan Olson’s work on this channel. Recommended video:
Triumph of the Will and the Cinematic Language of Propaganda
Kyle Kallgren: Film critic specialising in art cinema, but always from a socially left-wing perspective. While this political aspect is clear in all his reviews, often he does do videos exploring politics a lot more overtly such as below.
Recommended video:
From Caligari to Hitler: Imagining the Tyrant - Between the Lines Lindsay Ellis: Like Olson and Kallgren, Ellis started back in the day on That Guy With The Glasses, but has since transcended that prison into a phenomenal film critic. She uses dry humour and widely recognisable pop culture (her favourite subjects being Disney and Transformers) to look at intersecting social and political trends. While she’s often spoken from a feminist perspective, her recent work has begun delving into Marxist analysis in a way she’s very accessibly explained to the wide audience who watch her.
Recommended video:
Marxism! The Whole Plate Episode 9 Jack Saint / LackingSaint: Formerly did animations, now does video essays with political themes like in the link below. Also interesting is his parody of anti-SJW film reviews 'Rational Big Boy DEMOLISHES SJW Propaganda: 12 Angry Men'.
Recommended video:
Sky High: Disney's Fascist Eugenics Movie Pop Culture Detective: Despite the current cultural backlash to social justice, this guy has somehow gotten away with making video essay after video essay with millions of views criticising the portrayal of toxic masculinity in film and television, while celebrating the non-normative gender archetypes in media like Steven Universe.
Recommended video:
The Adorkable Misogyny of The Big Bang Theory Renegade Cut: Another long-form video essayist, but has a particular emphasis on analysing social justice in film. His work includes critical readings of the white privilege themes of ‘Get Out’, the perhaps accidental Ayn Randian/Objectivist themes of ‘The Incredibles’, and as seen below, the contentious approach to racism of ‘Three BillBoards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’.
Recommended video:
How (Not) to Discuss Racism in Film - Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri Renegade Cut

2018.05.26 16:13 Eiion Battery Drain from Mobile Network Signal Although Turned OFF!?
Ok, I'm completely lost with this and have no idea how this can be a thing in the first place: Last night I got home and noticed that my state of charge on my Axon 7 had quite changed. Checking the battery consumption I've noticed, that for some reason my phone had consumed quite some of its charge due to mobile network signal (missing/searching).
The thing is: Although there's a data SIM in the 2nd slot for a few weeks now (no SIM in the 1st), my mobile network is always turned off since I don't even use it.
Of course I've checked and it's still turned off.
Over the night I turned airplane mode on and when going out of airplane mode this morning, mobile network - again - turned on (according to the battery usage diagram)... although still being turned off.
I don't get it. I've restarted the phone, I've turned the SIM on and off again... but still, there's battery drainage from mobile network while it is turned off.
Here's screenshots:
https://i.imgur.com/LgZTvDv.jpg and
https://i.imgur.com/w8OA21k.jpg I have the phone for about 6 months now and this is the first time this is happening. I really hope someone knows what's going on here and can point me to a way to fix the issue.

2017.11.04 15:33 ChipsWithDat ZTV news on Nicktoons Network (2006)
2017.07.30 04:59 Bwa_aptos trezorctl getaddress -c Litecoin -t address
I installed the python-trezor program, and proceeded to use it to obtain a Litecoin address:
trezorctl get_address -c Litecoin -t address
It gave me this address:
LKTC95qzwkzmVNnRW671SKc1BTqZTvPdNA
I sent a little Litecoin to it. You can see the transaction here:
https://chainz.cryptoid.info/ltc/address.dws?LKTC95qzwkzmVNnRW671SKc1BTqZTvPdNA.htm However, when I go to the Internet wallet for Trezor, I clicked on a bunch of stuff (I'm not good with pointy clicky interfaces) and finally got to Trezor Legacy wallet with a similar looking address, but it looks like this:
LTKX47KmoUsfVaLVSg3UeBZqaiXvTMbMBH
Later, I read that a way to get an address from the Litecoin wallet in trezorctl is like this:
trezorctl get_address -c Litecoin -t address -n "m/44'/0'/0'/0/0"
I have no idea what that "m/44'/ etc is, and I cannot find any type of manual about it. However, it gives the same address above that I found earlier in the online wallet for Trezor.
However, now I went back to the online wallet, and the address is now:
Lf8CN8gJo1UFCn2fu9oZxQMBkjWuRTkpYc
When I go back into trezorctl and re-enter the one with the funny -n option, I get the middle address above again.
I cannot figure out a bunch of things:
- What is the funny text after -n?
- How do the different addresses relate to what's going on in the online wallet?
- Why doesn't anything show my balance of the original LKTC95qzwkzmVNnRW671SKc1BTqZTvPdNA I sent to? I still show 0 balance.
- Is there a way I can use trezorctl to sign anything with the LKTC95qzwkzmVNnRW671SKc1BTqZTvPdNA key that I originally sent to?
- I cannot find documentation on how to create, sign, download and upload a Litecoin blockchain coin program from trezorctl into the Litecoin network for submission (i.e., spend Litecoin). Is there docs for that?
I used DuckDuckGo.Com to look for any documentation to trezorctl, but I cannot find any that way.
I looked at the above transaction raw message, and copied the signature and message as I interpreted them, and tried this command line:
trezorctl verify_message -c Litecoin LKTC95qzwkzmVNnRW671SKc1BTqZTvPdNA 47304402206533596b2643533f30e9c621d57d1476b384e19772c0c98f650977def17612840220587c0942a1fd896c252cce3aafcf51b34ea86d36ee6692327fc40b366b1e3094012102b25449f4b132f846900928d64d71df1d6d5c68683e50a260ea2f24f1645142e5 76a9140280fdd402bfdc6aa38f1be1f6eb1160604c968d88ac
It returns "False". I also tried using the text of the "asm" strings:
trezorctl verify_message -c Litecoin LKTC95qzwkzmVNnRW671SKc1BTqZTvPdNA 304402206533596b2643533f30e9c621d57d1476b384e19772c0c98f650977def17612840220587c0942a1fd896c252cce3aafcf51b34ea86d36ee6692327fc40b366b1e3094 "OP_DUP OP_HASH160 0280fdd402bfdc6aa38f1be1f6eb1160604c968d OP_EQUALVERIFY OP_CHECKSIG"
It also returns "False".
Am I verifying that message incorrectly? Actually, now that I think about it, I should be using the public keys, since the private key signatures for that message belong to my sending wallet in Litecoin Core QT client, which the Trezor doesn't have access to right now. I'll see if it can verify a public signature:
Anyway, I don't think that's the right thing, since that is the wrong transaction to handle.
I'll need to read more about this.

2017.02.23 17:15 cap7707 Nine Inch Nails - Not the Actual Events EP (Released 12.23.16)
Not Actual Events, is a five song EP released under the
Null Corporation, singesongwriter Trent Reznor's label. It is the the first official Nine Inch Nails on which longtime collaborator
Atticus Ross is credited as a member of the band.
In looking back at the NIN discography in total, one might consider the first three Nine Inch Nails albums, and the
Broken EP the band's imperial period. All of these albums are
multi-platinum recordings. 1994's best selling, critically acclaimed record
The Downward Spiral made the band a mainstay of MTV, and a worldwide
co-headlining tour with David Bowie followed. After an extended break, NIN released the sprawling double 1999 album,
The Fragile, after whose tour Reznor went to rehab, fired his management, and closed his previous boutique record label, Nothing Records.
Of all the rock acts of the Alternative Rock era of the 1990's, Nine Inch Nails was one of the least slavishly devoted to the classic guitabass/drums template. All their releases have heavily featured sampling and sequencing and Reznor has referenced both musically and in interviews the impact of industrial metal giants like
Ministry.
Releases since 1999 could be considered to be Nine Inch Nails 2.0. 2005's stripped down, song oriented
With Teeth saw Reznor pairing back the conceptual underpinning and ambient interludes of previous releases and experimenting with new vocal flows and tics.
Year Zero followed in 2007, and was perhaps the most overtly political record yet. Produced while on the tour, the record was a harsh menagerie of laptop squall and fiery screed. Reznor made a
public, non-amicable split from his then major label Interscope, and followed in the footsteps of alt. rock acts like Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead by self releasing 2008's free to download record
The Slip. 2008 also saw the self release of the quadruple ambient instrumental album
Ghosts I–IV.
In 2010, Reznor took an extended hiatus from Nine Inch Nails in which he started a side project, How To Destroy Angels, and collaborated on soundtrack work for films such as
Gone Girl,
The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo, and
The Social Network, for which he and collaborator Atticus Ross won an Academy Award.
Reznor returned to Nine Inch Nail with 2013's
Hesitation Marks, which saw the band moving away from the overt agro-rock stylings of previous releases and incorporating more of the analog synth textures from his soundtrack work. Nine Inch Nails has thematically often veered toward the darker end of the emotional spectrum, and this release, while touching on familiar themes (i.e. self loathing, control, addiction and resentment, etc) veered briefly in the opposite direction. One song,
"Everything,", although unsuccessfully, did for the first time broach outright optimistic territory both lyrically and musically.
Released at the tail end of 2016, Not Actual Events leans away from the milder, softer sounds of Hesitation Marks. The analog synths remain on tracks like
"Dear World" but the tone is menacing and ominous, and spocken word samples waft in and out of the mix. The bruising industrial rock of the past rears its head briefly on the first track,
"Branches/Bones". Reznor's voice is deeper and lower than in past releases, and is distorted and pitched on the track
"She's Gone Away," a droning, tense moodpiece. The overall tone is threatening and tense throughout the set.
Reznor is an absolute giant in alt-rock circles and, aside from Radiohead, is essentially peerless in being one of the few acts from the alt rock moment to maintain both commercial and artistic credibility. Although increasingly small and insular, modern rock and mainstream rock radio still play new Nine Inch Nails singles and releases.
How does this EP fit into the Nine Inch Nails oeuvre?
Where would you rank it amonst previous releases?
What do you feel the themes are in this newest EP?

2017.02.02 01:09 DTG_Bot Community Focus ZiroTV
Source:
https://www.bungie.net/en/News/Article/45648 For the past several years, Bungie has made the trip to beautiful Cologne, Germany for the annual gamescom industry event. We have met many new friends on our travels, some of whom have agreed to sit down with us for a chat about themselves and their channels. ZiroTV is a duo of German players who enjoy making YouTube videos and streaming in their spare time. We’ll let them give you the details.
Hello, and welcome. Tell us a bit about yourselves and your channel.
ZTV: First of all, thanks for having us. We have been Destiny fans since day one and this is truly an honor to be featured as a Community Focus. ZiroTV is a project consisting of two members: Michael (26) and Florian (17). We’re better known under our gamer tags iTzzMichaa and iTzzFloo, or as the ZiroTV duo. We’ve known each other for ten years and have lived in the same building for quite some time. Living this close to each other gives us the perfect opportunity to produce daily video content for our Youtube channel. On YouTube, we offer the biggest and best known German channel for daily Destiny content including guides, reviews for weapons, gear and classes, recommendations, and news. One of our main goals was to offer newcomers a pleasant and easy start into the complex Destiny universe. We also want to entertain the hardcore players with informative content. Within the last two years, we have produced more than 1,600 Destiny videos. We always like to have a consistent mix of longer, more detailed topics, and shorter news segments. We want our subscribers to always be well informed about all things Destiny. In order to guarantee this quality, we spend several hours on editing our YouTube videos and communicating directly to our viewers via our daily Twitch live stream. It’s all about getting people involved and having fun; we really love the direct interaction with our viewers.
Wow, that is a lot of videos. Where do you call home on the Internet?
ZTV: On YouTube you can find new content each day and also visit our daily live stream on Twitch. On Facebook and Twitter we offer daily postings and we also have an Instagram channel to cover all of our activities, e.g. events like gamescom, PSX, or our exclusive visit to Bungie prior to the Rise of Iron launch.
It was a pleasure getting to meet you when you came in for a visit. What do you find unique about the German Destiny community?
ZTV: We’ve met a lot of international Destiny players at events. Whether it’s Russian, Spanish, or Japanese players, we all share the same enthusiasm, passion and mindset. Everyone enjoys the overwhelming experience of mastering a Raid for the first time or earning the last missing Exotic item for your collection. All Destiny players know exactly how that feels, irrespective of nationalities or gender. This is the reason why it is really hard to name specific things that differentiates the German community from others.
We have made the experience that German players always try to help Destiny newcomers to find their way into the game and the community. Germans tend to be really ambitious about improving their performance in Raids or perfecting their movement in multiplayer modes. Players use Facebook groups as networks to start their next Destiny adventures in Trials of Osiris, Iron Banner, and Raids. There are always helpful people willing to join your team and play together.
It’s also a privilege that Bungie has visited gamescom the last few years and gave German players the chance to get an early hands-on with new Destiny content. We always hear that it’s a great experience for community members to have the opportunity to personally talk to Bungie staff like DeeJ while playing the new PvP maps at the Destiny booth. It feels like Bungie really cares about the German Destiny fans and the community in general. This is what we get as feedback when talking to other players.
We love meeting players at events all around the world. What was your favorite memory from gamescom?
ZTV: gamescom is always a highlight! In 2015 and 2016, we had the chance to get our hands on Destiny early and capture new gameplay material before release. It’s always an honor to meet the Bungie staff in person and talk about the game. At gamescom it’s also great meeting other Destiny YouTubers that you only see at events due to living in different parts of Germany or even other countries. One of our most favorite experiences was cooperating with Bungie and Activision to present the official German live stream of Rise of Iron directly from the gamescom 2016 event together with our friends from Inside PlayStationDE. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to give the German community and a worldwide audience a first glimpse at the new Rise of Iron content while also interviewing DeeJ on the show. This was definitely our personal highlight, but every gamescom is a lot of fun. The Bungie guys are always open for a chat and show their interest. They always listen to what drives the community and that is what makes this relationship so special.
Which Subclass and weapons are your favorite?
Micha: I prefer my Hunter with the Nightstalker Subclass. My favorite weapon is The Last Word. I love the movement of the Hunter and the way The Last Word performs, which is quite unique.
Flo: From day one the Warlock has been my favorite character and the MIDA Multi-Tool is my weapon of choice because it gives me an unrivaled speed when combined with my Warlock.
Good picks Micha. Flo, you have good taste in weapons. Is there anything else you would like to add before we go?
ZTV: Thank you very much for having us as part of Community Focus. And please, bring back the old Raids with adapted levels and the Vex Mythoclast and Necrochasm.
Thanks for the suggestion. We're always listening to feedback.
We would like to thank the guys from ZiroTV for taking the time to be our Community Focus this week. Be sure to check out their YouTube channel. Even if you don’t speak German, they have some great content.
Who will be the next Community Focus? We don’t know yet. But we are always taking suggestions. If you have someone in mind make a post on the Community forum with the tag #CommunityFocus.
