2024.06.08 16:41 Pythang7 AITAH for telling my boyfriend he needs to look more put together

My (F 23) boyfriend (M 26) of 3 1/2 years has went from a size 32 to a size 36 in pants. He got a perm and his hair looked so good faded on the sides, but now hes growing it out and its all in his eyes. Plus he hasn’t shaved his face, he thinks he can grow it out but its super patchy, he looks like a slob. Apparently his first customer yesterday told him to cut his hair and he laughed about it saying its just an old man giving him a hard time. Like no dude… your appearance might be affecting your commission sales at work. I have been on his ass for so long about going to the gym and just simply taking care of himself. Its not fair that i look good, take care of my appearance, & have others making fun of my boyfriend to me. Ive had some hot men make comments to me about our pics on insta and im Embarrassed!!! Im literally begging for him to take care of his appearance and he shruggs it off. I stopped taking any pics w him tbh… and his stepmom posted a pic of us at my graduation & i removed it from my facebook page so no one could see him. Am i just an asshole? Ive given him so much crap about the amount of pop he drinks & how his weight affects our sex life. He denies it but i even told him recently if we do missionary and i try to play w myself at the same time, I CANT bc his belly smashes my hand. Theres so much that ive brought up to him but he just doesnt care. Wondering if anyone else has dealt with a similar situatuon and how it got fixed🙃

2024.05.30 17:45 Ravenamore Southwestern Advantage MLM

Southwestern Advantage
An hour ago, I had a knock at the door. It was a clean-cut college age kid who said he was distributing "educational materials". His "proof" that he was legit was showing me pictures on his FB of local families that he supposedly had contact with.
I knew none of these people. I couldn't recognize anything in the backgrouds. I have no idea what kind of "proof" this was supposed to be. For all I know, he took the pics from online and just slapped labels on them.
He was very obviously reciting from a memorized script. I cut to the chase and asked him what it was he was selling. He said the educational materials, which he kept saying went from high school to preschool.
I told him I had no money for that sort of thing (I'm pretty sure the stuff was expensive as hell), said goodbye, and started to shut the door.
He immediately said, "I understand, but if you'd just let me explain, it won't take more than a minute, and I'll still get credit..." That's when I said goodbye again and shut the door. He kept talking after I shut the door, asking if any of my neighbors had kids, then waited a bit before leaving.
I looked these guys up, and they did show up as an MLM in the stickied thread on the first page. They recruit college kids as independent contractors, who are sent to Nashville for training, They're then posted outside their home or college state and stay with a host family. It's door to door sales.
There are no employee benefits, there is no guaranteed income. They get 40% commission, but that's after they pay expenses and cost of the material. They're responsible for their expenses while working, they pay their host families $50 a week, and usually have to go to weekly meetings that also cost money.
I know a lot of MLMs are cult-like, but this added factor of sending the kids out of their home or college state and having them lodge with a host family and pay them rent REALLY concerns me. It reminds me of what I've heard LDS missionaries go through.
The person's uprooted, without friends or families for help. Paying the host family weekly means that's $200 a month gone, plus expenses, plus paying for stock. Apparently some sellers work 80+ hours weeks.
I'm sure those "host families" are not neutral, but involved with the company in some way. They're probably told to keep up company speak and toxic positivity, keep pressure on the kid to sell and sell, and guilt trip them if they try to leave.
It concerns some colleges too - some have banned Southwestern Advantage from recruiting.
I wanted to do this post because I'd never heard of them before, It's all earnest kids selling "educational materials" for school, I think they'd be more likely to get people to lower their guard and feel like they're helping out, when, really, they're perpetuating the company taking advantage of kids.

2024.05.19 15:37 Flaky-Addition4279 Burning when peeing

But is it the feminine wash that Im using?
Is it the body wash? Is it the body scrubs
Is it my panties
I eat healthy. I take garlic supplements. Alkaline water.
Do I urgently need probiotics supplements and boric acid
The last sex I had was with a condom And then straight after I experienced burning…
The only convenient sex position that’s not hurting me is if I sit on top of the table.
Or careful missionary.
I’m really sad because we really love backshots but hurts a lot. I can’t even ride on top because it hurts so much
Is it vaginal dryness Is my body rejecting him
We also notice a smell? Like im always wet.
But I still tasted the same good pussy juice according to him.
When I took a pic of my discharge it’s like thick white.. but Im ovulating.
Today I have tried to wash with baking soda.

2024.05.13 20:27 Royal-Vegetable-2473 Mormon/LDS connection to troubled teen industry

From what I know, many active LDS members in Utah played a big part in the troubled teen industry’s beginning, back in 1960 when Larry Dean Olsen started leading wilderness outings with his classmates. Larry was a student at Brigham Young University (BYU), this university is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), who runs the school.
The leaders at this university said that students who went in these outings would behave better and be better at school, which imo is not 100% accurate since they would then profite from this.
These programs might well be an outgrowth from the BYU programs, which students with problems would pay for a 2/3 weeks survival program that involved a lot of deprivation and prayer, and a week alone in the desert.
This disgusting and lucrative wilderness therapy industry was born there. These people promised parents that their children would be better if living in Utah which is a lie.
In 1964, West Ridge Academy (known as the utah boys ranch until 2005) founded by David Mckay was also one of the first in Utah.
This kind of treatment is seen by some religious as the way to get kids to walk in line. I remember some TTI survivors saying that sometimes staff would play LDS songs in the background while they were studying.
There was a case in which an excommunicated man from the lds church who fooled with 16 year olds got a job in one of these TTI facilities in Utah, just because he had a graduation from BYU. The fact that these type of people are allowed near teenagers is unreal.
Now, I know that not all of the TTI facilities are 100% based in lds, some were also inspired by synanon and Lifespring (wwasp for example). But the first ones were indeed lds inspired.
The founders and presidents of wwasp featured on “the program” (Netflix) are most mormon (Robert and Marvin Litchfield, Ken Kay, Norm Thibault).
You can see the litchfield family pics showed on episode 3, Litchfield wearing a BYU gear, them engaging in church like activities, etc. A former wwasp staff member also spoke about this connection.
The wwasp was mostly run by mormons, some wwasp workers even opened their own programs. Thayer Learning Center (for example), a military style boot camp run by John and Willa Bundy, who was advertising her school for people with “turret syndrome”. In 2004, a student named Roberto Reyes died on the Bundy’s watch when he got bitten by a spider and was still forced to exercise excessively.
I do not think that the schools were affliated with the mormon church directly, but with members of the mormon church. I think that some of these programs were mormon behaviour modification camps disguised as rehab schools, or at least inspired in the mormon cult.
I noticed that some of these programs were religious in nature. Mountain Park Baptist Boarding School, in Patterson, Missouri had kids regularly paddled, forced to wear culottes and call the owners Mama and Papa.
Still, the lds church is sus as hell, doing shady stuff like their missionary service being related to human trafficking. The worst is that they pay you to do so, which might have inspired the old TTI transportation methods? The transporters would also be getting paid to take teenagers in the middle of the night. You can learn more about the lds possible trafficking here:
https://www.reddit.com/exmormon/s/colout4OuC
More similarities: The churches make money by not paying for staff, at the TTI big part of the staff was paid a really low value.
They both lie and deceive so you’ll join (church volunteers and parents in the TTI)
“The kidnapping” even if it is “legal” it’s not moral…
They do not pay for janitors, or a cleaning team, just like it was mentioned in “the program” and survivors stories, staff would have the students cleaning.
Again, I do not entirely blame the churches because there is not solid proof to make a connection between the church and these facilities. HOWEVER, the mormons who founded these facilities use their churches values and habits to run these fake therapy centers.
Mormons break a lot of rules from the church and some of them value their personal beliefs over the church’s beliefs, so, they do not care if they are hurting teens, even though the church says they are against violence.
Even of the church is not entirely related, their theology is. If anyone can help me gather more information I would be grateful. Thank you.

2024.05.06 15:09 partypastor Unreached People Group of the Week - Jewish Peoples of the United States

banner
Welcome back to the Reformed UPG of the Week!
Gonna leave this here because reddit is still a massive pain these days
Slight update, the new reddit UI has made it almost impossible for me to quickly do these, like I used to be able to do. Thus, theres a chance it becomes UPG of the every other week until the problem is fixed. I can't spend every one of my entire Monday mornings working on this for hours with stupid formatting issues.
Last week I was reminded just how many Unreached People Groups there are in America. So today we are doing the largest unreached people group in the US, Jewish peoples of America.

Region: United States

map of Jewish peoples in the United States
Stratus Index Ranking (Urgency): 34
It has been noted to me by u/JCmathetes that I should explain this ranking. Low numbers are more urgent, both physically and spiritually together, while high numbers are less urgent. The scale is 1-177, with one number assigned to each country. So basically on a scale from Afghanistan (1) to Finland (177), how urgent are the peoples physical and spiritual needs.
The Stratus Index - Synthesizes reliable data from different sources to clearly display the world’s most urgent spiritual and physical needs. The vast majority of missions resources go to people and places already Reached by the Gospel, while only 3% of missionaries and 1% of missions money are deployed among the Unreached. This is the Great Imbalance. As a result, there are more people without access to the Gospel today than a decade ago. Stratus seeks to equip the global church with fresh vision to accomplish the Great Commission by addressing some of the factors that perpetuate the Great Imbalance. We hope this tool allows the church to better understand what steps will be required to overcome the barriers that prevent needs from being met, spurring informed and collaborative missions strategy. Climate: With its large size and geographic variety, the United States includes most climate types. To the east of the 100th meridian, the climate ranges from humid continental in the north to humid subtropical in the south.
Frozen Great Lakes
LA, California
Terrain: Measured by only land area, the United States is third in size behind Russia and China, and just ahead of Canada. So its hard to get a bead on all the types of Terrain. The coastal plain of the Atlantic seaboard gives way further inland to deciduous forests and the rolling hills of the Piedmont. The Appalachian Mountains and the Adirondack massif divide the eastern seaboard from the Great Lakes and the grasslands of the Midwest. The Mississippi–Missouri River, the world's fourth longest river system, runs mainly north–south through the heart of the country. The flat, fertile prairie of the Great Plains stretches to the west, interrupted by a highland region in the southeast. The Rocky Mountains, west of the Great Plains, extend north to south across the country, peaking at over 14,000 feet (4,300 m) in Colorado. Farther west are the rocky Great Basin and deserts such as the Chihuahua, Sonoran, and Mojave. The Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges run close to the Pacific coast, both ranges also reaching altitudes higher than 14,000 feet (4,300 m). The lowest and highest points in the contiguous United States are in the state of California, and only about 84 miles (135 km) apart. At an elevation of 20,310 feet (6,190.5 m), Alaska's Denali is the highest peak in the country and in North America.

Wildlife of US: There are 311 known reptiles, 295 amphibians and 1154 known fish species in the U.S. Known animals that exist in the US include white-tailed deer, bobcat, raccoon, muskrat, striped skunk, barn owl, American mink, American beaver, North American river otter, red fox, American Black Bear, Hawaiian Monk Seal, Black-Footed Ferret, Gila Monster, Groundhog, Pronghorn, American Alligator, Crocodile, American Bison, bald Eagle, wolves, mountain lions, Grizzly bears, polar bears, lynx, muskox, caribou, and now I'm tired of searching for lists that include all the animals. We have tons of venomous snakes, we have invasive pythons in the everglades.
Unfortunately, there is an invasive but existing population of wild monkeys in Silver Springs Florida.
Bison in Yellowstone
Pigeons in New York
Environmental Issues: Environmental issues in the United States include climate change, Ohio, species conservation, invasive species, deforestation, mining, nuclear accidents, pesticides, pollution, waste and over-population.
Languages: While many languages are spoken in the United States, English is the most common. Although there is no official language at the federal level, some laws—such as U.S. naturalization requirements—standardize English, and most states have declared English as the official language. Three states and four U.S. territories have recognized local or indigenous languages in addition to English, including Hawaii (Hawaiian), Alaska (twenty Native languages), South Dakota (Sioux), American Samoa (Samoan), Puerto Rico (Spanish), Guam (Chamorro), and the Northern Mariana Islands (Carolinian and Chamorro). In Puerto Rico, Spanish is more widely spoken than English. According to the American Community Survey, in 2010 some 229 million people (out of the total U.S. population of 308 million) spoke only English at home. More than 37 million spoke Spanish at home, making it the second most commonly used language. Other languages spoken at home by one million people or more include Chinese (2.8 million), Tagalog (1.6 million), Vietnamese (1.4 million), French (1.3 million), Korean (1.1 million), and German (1 million). The Jewish Peoples of America speak English.
Government Type: Federal presidential constitutional republic

People: Jewish Peoples of America

Jewish man of America
Population: 4,596,000
Estimated Foreign Workers Needed: 92+
Beliefs: The Jewish peoples of America are 2.7% Christian, but only 1.6% Evangelical. That means out of their population of 4,596,000, there are roughly 73,000 believers who share their faith. That slightly more than 1 believer for every 100.
Like all those who deny Christ, the Jewish peoples are deceived and follow a false god. For religious Jewish peoples, God (not the true God at this point) is the Supreme Being, the Creator of the universe, and the ultimate Judge of human affairs. Beyond this, the religious beliefs of the Jewish communities vary greatly. Orthodox Jewish peoples generally follow the traditional religious beliefs and practices found in the Jewish literature that interprets Scripture regarding ethical, religious, civil and criminal matters. Conservative Judaism is less traditional than Orthodox and combines different ethical, philosophical, and spiritual schools of thought. Reform Judaism is the most liberal form and interprets Jewish beliefs and practices in light of contemporary life and thought. Reform Jewish peoples do not believe that the Jewish Law is divinely revealed. They are not restricted to kosher (traditional, approved) foods, nor do they wear the skull cap (yarmulke) when praying or use Hebrew in prayer. All religious Jewish peoples believe in the coming of a Messianic Age, but only the Orthodox Jewish peoples look for a personal Messiah.
Not all Jewish peoples are religious. Some understand their "Jewishness" only as a social and cultural identity. American Jewish peoples are more likely to be atheists or agnostics than most Americans.
The Wilshire Boulevard Temple, known from 1862 to 1933 as Congregation B'nai B'rith, is a Reform Jewish congregation and synagogue, located at 3663 Wilshire Boulevard, in the Wilshire Center district of Los Angeles, California, in the United States. Founded in 1862, it is the oldest Jewish congregation in Los Angeles.
History: Jewish peoples were present in the Thirteen Colonies since the mid-17th century. However, they were small in number, with at most 200 to 300 having arrived by 1700. Those early arrivals were mostly Sephardi Jewish immigrants, of Western Sephardic (also known as Spanish and Portuguese Jewish) ancestry, but by 1720, Ashkenazi Jewish peoples from diaspora communities in Central and Eastern Europe predominated.
For the first time, the English Plantation Act 1740 permitted Jewish peoples to become British citizens and emigrate to the colonies. The first famous Jewish person in U.S. history was Chaim Salomon, a Polish-born Jewish person who emigrated to New York and played an important role in the American Revolution. He was a successful financier who supported the patriotic cause and helped raise most of the money needed to finance the American Revolution.
Despite the fact that some of them were denied the right to vote or hold office in local jurisdictions, Sephardi Jewish peoples became active in community affairs in the 1790s, after they were granted political equality in the five states where they were most numerous. Until about 1830, Charleston, South Carolina had more Jewish peoples than anywhere else in North America. Large-scale Jewish immigration commenced in the 19th century, when, by mid-century, many German Jewish peoples had arrived, migrating to the United States in large numbers due to antisemitic laws and restrictions in their countries of birth. They primarily became merchants and shop-owners. Gradually early Jewish arrivals from the east coast would travel westward, and in the fall of 1819 the first Jewish religious services west of the Appalachian Range were conducted during the High Holidays in Cincinnati, the oldest Jewish community in the Midwest. Gradually the Cincinnati Jewish community would adopt novel practices under the leadership Rabbi Isaac Meyer Wise, the father of Reform Judaism in the United States, such as the inclusion of women in minyan. A large community grew in the region with the arrival of German and Lithuanian Jewish peoples in the latter half of the 1800s, leading to the establishment of Manischewitz, one of the largest producers of American kosher products and now based in New Jersey, and the oldest continuously published Jewish newspaper in the United States, and second-oldest continuous published in the world, The American Israelite, established in 1854 and still extant in Cincinnati. By 1880 there were approximately 250,000 Jewish peoples in the United States, many of them being the educated, and largely secular, German Jews, although a minority population of the older Sephardi Jewish families remained influential.
Jewish migration to the United States increased dramatically in the early 1880s, as a result of persecution and economic difficulties in parts of Eastern Europe. Most of these new immigrants were Yiddish-speaking Ashkenazi Jewish peoples, most of whom arrived from poor diaspora communities of the Russian Empire and the Pale of Settlement, located in modern-day Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, and Moldova. During the same period, great numbers of Ashkenazic Jewish peoples also arrived from Galicia, at that time the most impoverished region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire with a heavy Jewish urban population, driven out mainly by economic reasons. Many Jewish peoples also emigrated from Romania. Over 2,000,000 Jewish peoples landed between the late 19th century and 1924 when the Immigration Act of 1924 restricted immigration. Most settled in the New York metropolitan area, establishing the world's major concentrations of the Jewish population. In 1915, the circulation of the daily Yiddish newspapers was half a million in New York City alone, and 600,000 nationally. In addition, thousands more subscribed to the numerous weekly papers and the many magazines in Yiddish.
At the beginning of the 20th century, these newly arrived Jewish peoples built support networks consisting of many small synagogues and Landsmanshaften (German and Yiddish for "Countryman Associations") for Jewish peoples from the same town or village. American Jewish writers of the time urged assimilation and integration into the wider American culture, and Jews quickly became part of American life. Approximately 500,000 American Jewish peoples (or half of all Jewish males between 18 and 50) fought in World War II, and after the war younger families joined the new trend of suburbanization. There, Jewish peoples became increasingly assimilated and demonstrated rising intermarriage. The suburbs facilitated the formation of new centers, as Jewish school enrollment more than doubled between the end of World War II and the mid-1950s, while synagogue affiliation jumped from 20% in 1930 to 60% in 1960; the fastest growth came in Reform and, especially, Conservative congregations. More recent waves of Jewish emigration from Russia and other regions have largely joined the mainstream American Jewish community.
Eastern European Jewish immigrants arriving in New York ca 1887?
Culture: Typical qualification that all people groups can't be summed up in small paragraphs and this is an over generalization.
In North America, most Jewish peoples live in urban areas on the east or west coasts. New York City has the largest Jewish population in North America, with over a half million Hassidic Jewish peoples alone. In South America, they also live in cities, but keep themselves as a distinct religious and ethnic minority.
While maintaining a Jewish identity, the majority of North American Jewish peoples conform to the mainstream American culture. "Jewishness" is often defined in more secular terms such as the use of Yiddish words and family traditions, rather than in religious aspects, such as the following of Jewish laws regarding dietary restrictions. Not all Jewish peoples are religious. Some understand their "Jewishness" only as a social and cultural identity. Understanding what it means to be a Jewish people begins in childhood. It takes place in the home through storytelling and by taking part in Jewish rituals and festivals such as Rosh Hashanah (New Year), Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), and Passover. Socialization also takes place through participation in Hebrew school or synagogue youth groups. At the age of 13, the Bar Mitzvah ceremony for a boy (or Bat Mitzvah for a girl) is an important rite of passage, which marks him or her as an adult member of the community. While these ceremonies were more spiritually focused in the past, they have become equally important as social events.
Marriage and family relationships among Jewish peoples are much the same as other Americans. While Jewish families have fewer children, they are child-oriented, indulgent, and permissive. Although wives generally take on their husbands' surnames, Jewish identity is traced through the mothers. That is, if one's mother is a Jewish people, then he is, according to Jewish law, Jewish. He or she is entitled to all the rights and privileges that status brings, including the right to immigrate to Israel and settle there as a citizen.
I couldn't not include a pic of the notable cultural event of the American Hasidic Jewish peoples who dug a tunnel in New York
Cuisine: Popular dishes in American Jewish cuisine include:
New York Bagels

Prayer Request:

Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. (Romans 10:1)

2024.04.28 23:06 Molly_Deconstructing How did the Mormon church start?

Member all my life, amid rapid deconstruction. This is what I was taught about the history of the church; Young JS questions which church to join - First Vision -subsequent visits from Moroni -receives the gold plates - church is started - translates the plates using urim & thumin- just like the pic that used to be in the library - missionaries go out preaching - everyone is threatened by the church/gospel and the saints were persecuted and they are chased place to place, due to ABSOLUTELY NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN -JS & Hyrum killed by mobs to stop the growth of the gospel ‘cause of the adversary! - Off to SLC, polygamy started by BY ‘cause of the widows -Emma stayed behind in Nauvoo because she was vain and wanted her son to have the glory of the presidency
But now learning at least 3 different versions of ‘The First Vision’ and those weren’t talked about until after the church was established! I have no idea what the actual chronological order of ‘the restoration’ was!
And then policy/doctrine -Once the prophet is called ANYTHING he says that is church related IS revelation and THE WORD OF GOD -We should NEVER question the timing of revelations - end of polygamy, temple ban on blacks, Nov ‘15 policy - all changes in policy/doctrine were unanimous and reached by loving discussion by the Q15
I’ve learned about Joseph and predilection for lying to his wife about polyandry/ polygamy, the seer stone in his hat, treasure digging. I see now how each new prophet just ignores what the last taught and proclaims new revelation, the continued abuse - spirituality & emotionally of women Ug it’s so, so awful

2024.04.23 11:48 VastChampionship6770 Busting Three Myths about the British Raj propagated by apologists

Busting Three Myths about the British Raj propagated by apologists

MYTH #1 : The British Abolished Slavery in India

1 very specific form of Chattel slavery they claim to abolish, ignoring the fact that they compensated the slave owners, NOT the slaves and sent the “freed” slaves into various other forms of slavery, as I will describe below
Indian ”Indenture”
https://preview.redd.it/77x2ujyg87wc1.png?width=602&format=png&auto=webp&s=edae095a254bbee800349dd52875d492019dd0da
Normally, Normally Indentured Servitude isn't normally considered slavery, but Indian Indenture was something else.
Millions of Starving, Impoverished Indians coerced to sign contracts they can’t even read, or simply kidnapped, taken onto ships in horrible conditions to colonies in Africa and the Americas; working under the scorching sun on plantations, getting whipped as a punishment is commonplace; wages are mysteriously withheld; and contract are mysteriously extended. Bonded Slavery continued after the Indenture, negating the abolition of the Indian Indenture in 1920. (and the Viceroy, Chelmsford, admitted it was only being done due to economic disadvantage, NOT goodwill.)
S*xual Slavery
https://preview.redd.it/xueuk4jq87wc1.png?width=602&format=png&auto=webp&s=3294967a061c079a69dd5146e5196173d5c874df
Type 1: Women and even young girls are kidnapped in broad daylight by soldiers to cantonments, where they are r*ped. Rigorous ID system and “medical checks” only for girls, not for male soldiers. “Justification” is a deterrent to homosexuality.
Type 2, the Devadasi, is a female Hindu artist who is dedicated to the worship or service of a deity or a temple for the rest of her life. They were forced into s*xual slavery by the British after they defeated the patrons of the temple, the Kings. Even when the British passed the “Bombay Devadasi Protection Act, 1934, they didn't even enforce the law, “justifying” it with “confusion between Devadsai and non-religious street dancers.”.
Indian Members of the Imperial Legislative Council passed the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 1929, fixing the age of marriage for girls at 14 years and boys at 18 years. The British were enraged... They did not enforce the law, “justifying” it by losing support from Hindus and Muslims.
Prison Slavery
https://preview.redd.it/ytj39ndu87wc1.png?width=324&format=png&auto=webp&s=182c08d3d4d9603ee1d91dd04d1d5153960b092d
Their only crime fighting for their freedom, men, women, and children are sent to horrific prisons, where not only are they subject to inhumane torture, dehumanization, unethical human experimentation (intentional exposure to malaria, typhoid, plague, dysentery, and testing “cures” that only made the subject worse AND brutal electrical shocks for “mad patients” AND being “drowned in food and milk”), a jail “diet” with literal kerosene inside, but also backbreaking slave labor, e.g., oil mills. They are expected to extract more oil than a literal bull! Or grinding coconuts , which literally drove some insane.
Famine “Relief” Camps
https://preview.redd.it/e1gc4q3y87wc1.png?width=602&format=png&auto=webp&s=d8646b0517281f3ae046114bf44d8be73d6b2380
From the late 19th century, continuing well into the 1930s and 1940s, these horrific camps existed. Basically, after waiting for a few hundred thousand or a few million deaths in famines (of their own exacerbation due to exporting food), the British would set up these Famine “Relief” Camps, thousands of miles away from famine-stricken villages. If the already starving Indians managed to reach the camp, they would be literally forced to perform excruciating slave labor for a ration lower than Buchenwald, with literally zero nutritional value. Couple that with the overcrowding, lack of sanitation and hygiene, and even unethical human experimentation (e.g., they forcibly divided families, one outside the camp and one inside the camp, and questioned, "Hmm, in both cases, will they starve?". (Not so fun fact, they did.)
So it’s no surprise that the mortality rates for some of the camps were as high as 94%! Only made the suffering of the starving Indians worse.
In 1935, a prominent British nutritionist stationed in India, W.R. Aykroyd, tried to put an end to this practice by giving rations of actually nutritious value, but he was flat-out ignored by his higher-ups.
Of course, in independent India, famines are extremely rare, so these camps were shut down and dismantled.
Criminal Tribes Acts
https://preview.redd.it/5pt1vpb197wc1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&s=e83bfe490bc76c3dd7b80754c413527d576ae8a0
1871 onwards: One of the most draconian acts of the Raj, this categorized millions of people from various communities (mostly nomadic and semi-nomadic but also transgender people) as “criminals by birth.”. At first, they were subject to weekly reporting to the police, more discrimination than other Indians, awful police brutality, and surveillance.
However, in 1897 onwards, cultural genocide started through the legal kidnapping of children into so-called “reformatory” settlements.
From 1908 on, slavery was introduced in this act through forced resettlement to “special” settlements—slave labor camps. They were confined to essentially being enslaved for the rest of their lives.
In Independent India, while these communities still suffer to an extent from the pre-1897 actions, there are thankfully no more “reformatory” and “special” settlements.
Land Revenue Systems (most notably and long-lastingly, the Zamindari System)
https://preview.redd.it/ssyjewta97wc1.png?width=394&format=png&auto=webp&s=3422f195a1d10e62f39db1c2c099edb97bcf7b1a
  • Zamindari System. Although it existed before British rule, the British made it in its most infamous form, the Permanent Settlement of 1793. The Zamindari System involved the British granting large and fertile tracts of land to feudal lords known as "Zamindars.”. They were responsible for collecting revenue for the millions of peasants working on the land and then paying a fixed amount to their British higher-ups. Sometimes there were “sub zamindars” between the peasants and Zamindars with varying degrees of power. However, the Zamindars severely exploited the peasants, imposing extremely high taxes on them and trapping them in a cycle of debt and poverty. And the British were fully complicit with them, and of course they profited the most out of this slavery. Only abolished after Independence.
  • Ryotwari System. Introduced in the 1820s. It was meant to eliminate the Zamindar middleman between the peasants and the British; however, it came with its own drawbacks, as the rates for taxes were guaranteed to be 50% in the dryland and 60% in the wetland, so if the farmer had a bad harvest, well, good luck. To try and avoid this, peasants took loans from moneylenders, who of course didn't give any sh*t about them being happy to exploit. So it was a lose-lose situation for the peasants. It was replaced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by similar systems to the Zamindari System!
  • The Mahalwari System was introduced in 1822. The Mahalwari System was intended to protect village autonomy by making them the ones paying taxes directly to the state. However, since the British were absolute buffoons in their “assumptions” about the land area and crop yield in the system, this led to widespread corruption and exploitation. It had the same fate as the Ryotwari. “Out of the frying pan and into the fire.”

MYTH #2: "SURE, THE LAISSEZ-FAIRE POLICIES OF THE BRITISH LED TO GREAT FAMINES IN INDIA THROUGHOUT THE LATE 19TH CENTURY, BUT THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FAMINE CODES ERADICATED THIS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE "SPECIAL" CASE OF BENGAL IN 1943."

I won’t go over Bengal 1943, as that is the topic for another post. There are a plethora of myths perpetuated by apologists, but I will go over the main part of this myth.
Quick terminology: A famine is considered a “great famine” if it has 1,000,000+ deaths.
First of all, if the Famine Codes eradicated the Great Famines, then what was the need for the “Relief” Camps to continue well into the 1930s and 1940s? (the picture of a “relief” camp is from 1936, Bengal.)
Or why did Aykroyd (unsuccessfully) recommend making the rations humane? It makes you wonder.
Let us quickly go over Bengal during the 1930s.
Between 1931 and 1942 (pic below), there were a “string” of famines which culminated in minimum 1 Million deaths; essentially, there was the equivalent of a Great Famine happening each year in Bengal alone this timeframe. Dispels the myth completely.
https://preview.redd.it/jd7mygei97wc1.png?width=602&format=png&auto=webp&s=da1aaece83e0846de368138b22f21c623dc77aea
From “THE DEMOGRAPHY OF INDIAN FAMINES: A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE” BY
ARUP MAHARATNA
LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND POLITICAL SCIENCE
A THESIS SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF PH.D. IN DEMOGRAPHY UNIVERSITY OF LONDON 1992”
From Bengal, we go to Madras.
Between 1922 and the beginning of World War II, famine visited parts of Madras five more times: in 1924, 1931–32, 1934–35, 1937–38, and 1938–39.
R. Suryanarayana Rao, a member of the SIS and Social Service League of Madras, pushed for more Indian contribution to relief than the horrible camps set up by the British. He was a vocal critic of the Madras Famine Code, and rightfully so.
In 1937, the Government of India Act 1935 commenced, which, although still retained British superiority and even had some regressions (Churchill described the broad sweep of “emergency” powers given to Lord Linlithglow as “likely to rouse Mussolini’s envy”), it gave some concessions to Indians, i.e., more provincial autonomy.
This was good news for Rao:
Rao joined the Madras Famine Code Revision Committee in 1938*, when parts of Madras were still in the midst of a famine. Alarmed by the* scale of the famine that affected several districts at once*, the committee evaluated the current response and reached the conclusion that a “bolder policy” was needed. It offered* far-reaching recommendations for the reform of the provincial famine code*, such as the* abolition of the grain equivalent and the increase of wages and rations*. It noted that* women workers received an insufficient amount of calories and that children’s rations lacked fat*. It also pointed out that the* allowances of vegetables were lower than in jail diets and thus generally insufficient*. These minute recommendations were overshadowed by the demand for a* more fundamental change*.* The committee recommended that the preamble of the Madras Famine Code broaden the duties of the government in times of famine.
“It must also be remembered that while the main object of state intervention is to save life, it is no less essential to maintain people in good health to prevent physical deterioration and dispiritedness among them so that they may be in a position to resume their ordinary pursuits with advantage to themselves and the State on the advent of better times.”
From “Ending Famine in India: A Transnational History of Food Aid and Development, C. 1890–1950” By Joanna Simonow
Guess what the British (Lord Erskine, Governor of Madras Presidency) did? He just didn't implement the policy. Even worse, he literally did this for a political grudge, for he disagreed with some policies of the First Premier of the time, C. Rajagopalachari.
A Famine broke out the next year in the Ceded districts. Rao toured the area, checking if the policy was properly implemented; to his dismay, it wasn't.
The death toll for all the famines mentioned in this Madras Section is likely the equivalent of a few Great Famines, noticing the scale and severity.
And also, a tragic tale in Bombay.
We all know of the influenza pandemic; it was devastating for the entire world, but for India, it was particularly horrible. 10–20 million lives were lost—greater than any other country. When the influenza entered villages, it was at the wrong place at the wrong time, as the population was already on the brink of starvation (due to a famine so devastating in 1918-19 & 1920-21 that basic necessities prices shot up—it could be argued that they were repercussions of WW1, but that does not quantify there being a repeat). So they fled to cities, but the British considered them to be a 'threat’ and confined them in “relief” camps. This not only literally starved and enslaved them, but also made the influenza much worse.
From “Ending Famine in India: A Transnational History of Food Aid and Development, C. 1890–1950” By Joanna Simonow

MYTH 3: "THE BRITISH BANNED SATI"

Yes, Sati was barbaric. But the notion that the British came and saw this widespread practice told the high-caste Hindus, “Be it so. This burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pile. But my nation also has a custom. When men burn women alive, we hang them and confiscate all their property.” and abolished it, is FALSE (the quote is true but everything else is FALSE)
1.) Centuries prior to the British, in nearly all cases, the practice of Sati dramatically changed. Foreign Invaders were killing Indian men, so their widows had two choices. Burn herself alive, or get abused.
2.) By the time of the British, Sati was *not* widespread, and I mean NOT widespread. Literally the opposite.
3.) Peshwas banned Sati throughout their domains in 1800
4.) Shri Swami Narayan was campaigning against Sati in 1801.
5.) Hindu Maratha kingdom Savantvadi banned Sati in 1821
6.) Christian Missionaries campaigned to ban Sati!... in order to forcefully assimilate Indians to Christianity...
7.) Ram Mohan Roy, Indian royal who joined the EIC, campaigned for the banning of Sati in Bengal. Later, the British banned Sati in Bengal.
8.) Except... recent research has disputed whether Sati was actually practiced there in any notable way.

Welcome back to the Reformed UPG of the Week!
Now, please meet the Bouyei of China

Region: China - Guizhou

map
Stratus Index Ranking (Urgency): 53
Stratus Website
Xijiang, a town in eastern Guizhou
Climate: Guizhou has a humid subtropical climate. There are few seasonal changes. Its annual average temperature is roughly 10 to 20 °C, with January temperatures ranging from 1 to 10 °C and July temperatures ranging from 17 to 28 °C. Like in China's other southwest provinces, rural areas of Guizhou suffered severe drought during spring 2010.
Zhenyuan, in Guizhou
Terrain: Guizhou is a mountainous province, although its higher altitudes are in the west and centre. It lies at the eastern end of the Yungui Plateau. At 2,900 m (9,514 ft) above sea level, Jiucaiping is Guizhou's highest point.
Mount Fanjing in Guizhou
Wildlife of China: China has, according to one measure, 7,516 species of vertebrates including 4,936 fish, 1,269 bird, 562 mammal, 403 reptile and 346 amphibian species. In terms of the number of species, China ranks third in the world in mammals, eighth in birds, seventh in reptiles and seventh in amphibians. China's big cat species include the tiger, leopard, snow leopard and clouded leopard. The family Canidae has many members in China including the dog, wolf, dhole, red fox, corsac fox, Tibetan sand fox and common raccoon dog. They have the Panda bear, supposedly in the wild, though, like the Uyghurs they live almost completely in captivity. Other more common bears in China include the Asiatic black bear and the brown bear which are found across much of the country. China has a big variety of reptiles including the Chinese alligator and the Yangtze giant softshell turtle.
Unfortunately China is home to 21 primate species. :(
South China Tiger
Environmental Issues: China's environmental problems, including outdoor and indoor air pollution, water shortages and pollution, desertification, and soil pollution, have become more pronounced and are subjecting Chinese residents to significant health risks. Not to mention the active genocide of its peoples.
Languages: There are as many as 292 living languages in China. Largely spoken is Mandarin Chinese. The Bouyei in China speak Bouyei.
Government Type: Unitary Marxist–Leninist one-party socialist republic

People: Bouyei in China

Bouyei woman
Population: 3,295,000
Estimated Foreign Workers Needed: 66+
Beliefs: The Bouyei are 0.7% Christian. That means out of their population of 3,295,000, there are roughly 23,000 believers. Thats less than 1 believer for every 100 unbelievers.
The Bouyei are polytheists. They also practice an ancient form of exorcism called nuo. "A family will hire a shaman to cast out demons of illness or bad fortune. Ceremonies include climbing knife ladders, walking on fire or glass, and other activities to demonstrate the power of the spirits."
April 14, 2021 - Bouyei ethnic women display colorful rice used for sacrifice.
History: The Bouyei are the native Tai peoples of the plains of Guizhou. They are one of the oldest peoples of China, living in the area for more than 2,000 years. Prior to the establishment of the Tang dynasty, the Bouyei and Zhuang were linked together; the differences between both ethnic groups grew greater and from year 900 already they were two different groups. The Qing dynasty abolished the system of local heads and commanded in its place to officials of the army which caused a change in the local economy; from then on, the land was in the hands of a few landowners, which caused the population to revolt. During the Nanlong Rebellion(南笼起义) of 1797 led by Wang Nangxian, the Bouyei underwent a strong repression that caused many of them to emigrate to faraway Vietnam.
Map of Guizhou - 1655
Culture: Typical qualification that all people groups can't be summed up in small paragraphs and this is an over generalization.
Many Bouyei are agricultural farmers who commonly cultivate crops for consumption or sale like rice, millet, wheat, potatoes, maize, cocoa, tea, silk and many other types of crops. The Bouyei have also played a major role as intermediate merchants in the region. Due to changing economies, the Bouyei engage in both small-scale and large-scale commercial or business operations.
Eighty percent of the Bouyei people's residential areas are located in karst landscapes. The karst geomorphologic landscape is made up of stone forests, rock clusters, high-altitude forests, dissolving mounds, waterfalls and so on.
The Bouyei have many traditional festivals. Besides the traditional New Year Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival, the Double Third Day, Eighth of the Fourth Month and Double Sixth Festivals are also celebrated by the Bouyei.
June 6th Festival - a time for the Bouyei people to worship the God of the Fields, the God of Land, and the God of the Mountain as well as the legendary Pangu, who created the earth according to Chinese mythology and supposedly died on June 6th
Cuisine: The Bouyei people take rice, corn, wheat and buckwheat as their staple foods. They especially like glutinous rice food, such as glutinous rice cake and Zongzi, a traditional Chinese rice-pudding. The Bouyei people eat glutinous rice at every festival. Their non-staple foods include vegetables, beans and meat. Sour pepper and tofu are some of their most famous dishes. Every Bouyei household brews glutinous rice wine, regular rice wine and corn wine. Some rice wines, which are used to entertain guests, are brewed with wild resveratrol fruit and are rich in nutrients. The brewing technique of wild resveratrol fruit wine has a history dating back hundreds of years. It has evolved into a bulk commodity and sells well throughout the country.
Pepper chicken with soybean is a signature dish of the Bouyei ethnic group in Luodian county, #Guizhou province. It is a spicy combination of free-range chicken, fresh soybeans and red peppers!

Prayer Request:

Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. (Romans 10:1)

c - this likely is not the true religion that they worship, but rather they have a mixture of what is listed with other local religions, or they have embraced a liberal drift and are leaving faith entirely but this is their historical faith.
