I've been on the job hunt for almost a year now. I've been a part of multiple interview processes and even made it to the final round of a few of them. So far, I've just been applying through most jobsites (LinkedIn, Indeed, BuiltinLA, etc.). Now I want to try networking through LinkedIn as another means of job hunting.
Most of my professional experience is sales and customer service. I'm trying to break into the tech/start-up industry. I even completed a few data analytics certifications through Google and UCLA to help me standout as a stronger candidate. Currently I'm working a contract role for an insurance agency as a finance data coordinator. The contact role won't go past June and is also subject to send even sooner than I might expect.
I'm very much a people-person and have no problem striking up a conversation when I need to. However, the idea of reaching out to strangers on LinkedIn with the intent of finding a job opportunity feels pretty daunting and a fairly awkward. Basically, I'm looking for the most effective and efficient methods of networking that will help me find a job. Any help, guidance, suggestions, or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Side note: I've had recruiters from staffing agencies reach out to me on LinkedIn regarding positions they're looking to fill. After I interview for the position, I would then follow up with the recruiter just as they instructed. I don't hear anything back from them. I understand not getting the job, but why would a recruiter ghost me instead of responding to my follow up?

I am one full year out of college and was laid off of work on May 1st. I was recruited straight out of college so I never truly went through the pain of applications... Now I am shocked at how inefficient the hiring process really is.
Easy Apply on LinkedIn might be the worst thing ever. I can easily apply to 25+ companies in one day. If the application requires a cover letter, I can easily adapt my template and personalize it to the role with AI. The barrier to applying for jobs has gotten so low. While this is great for getting out volume, we lose quality.
LinkedIn continues to push AI features, such as using generative AI to draft personalized messages. This is only adding to the noise. A private equity firm with easy apply gets upwards of 1,500 applicants in a week. There is NO WAY a hiring manager can thoughtfully sift through resumes at this scale. There must be a better way.
I recently applied to a perfect-fit role with 300+ applicants and got radio silence after two weeks. Frustrated, I took a chance and DM'd the CEO. We ended up setting up a call that same day! It's baffling that a busy CEO is more responsive than the formal application process.
Networking seems to be king again. It feels like a return to the "who you know" days, not "what you know." Shouldn't skills and experience be the top priority?
There has to be a better way. We need a platform that cuts through the noise and connects qualified candidates with the right opportunities, focusing on skills, not connections.

I was looking where to post this question about a watchguard and this subreddit had more recent posts about watchguard than the watchguard subreddit.
I have been dabbling with watchguard for a long time and not using much of any of its capabilities. Want to learn more!
But specifically, a more basic issue.
A new PC wasn't getting a lease. Looking at the watchguard web interface, the pool was almost used up (pool had 123 and leases was 120? I made the pool larger and then I got the new PC an address. (lease time is 8 hours).
But looking closer - I don't have 120 or 121 devices on the network. And the leases page shows something like 30 on the 19. subnet?! I can reboot the firewall, to see if that resolves it. But any idea why the top says 121 leases and lists only 30?
I like to keep things simple. If the box can't keep track of leases accurately, does it do more complex things reliably?
How often do you reboot a watchguard?
This one is a T40, up for 81 days and the version is 12.10.2.B692269. I'm going to upgrade the box now.

It was disheartening at times, especially seeing all those job postings asking for 2+ years of experience for supposedly "entry-level" roles.
But then, a few months ago, I landed an apprenticeship with a major university. The best part? They didn't expect me to have any prior experience! I primarily work the service desk, but I also get to shadow other teams and learn so much more about different IT career paths. I've always had a knack for IT, with some school qualifications and a passion for tinkering at home, but this apprenticeship is giving me real-world experience and opening doors I never thought possible.
I know apprenticeships aren't always the first thing that comes to mind when job hunting, but I strongly encourage anyone looking to break into IT to consider them. Here's why:

My dad's vehicle lease is ending soon. He has put very few miles on it, making the buyout deal quite attractive. Since it closely matches the vehicle I was planning to purchase, we decided I should buy out the lease. The vehicle is a 2022 Ford Edge, and we're in Michigan. Here's the issue:
We figured out this plan too close to the lease end, so he cannot just sign the lease over to me. Below is our current idea on how to get this done, but we are looking for any advice or suggestions.
  1. We get a loan with him as the primary borrower and me as the cosigner.
  2. We buy out the Ford Edge.
  3. After the 45-day waiting period, we get the title with both our names on it.
  4. We both stay on the title until the loan is paid off, then we transfer the title into my name only.
I am sure there are potential issues with the above plan, such as figuring out the insurance side of things. Any advice, gotchas, things to look out for, or ideally a better plan of action would be wonderful.
EDIT: We know we can just sell me the vehicle from him after the 45-day period is up, but that would incur sales tax twice, once at the lease buyout, and once at the private sale from him to me. That is looking like the smoothest option for all, but we are trying to avoid that tax twice. We are both in a great financial standing and have a strong relationship so neither has concerns about co-signing, unless there is an implication we are not aware of.
EDIT 2: Just talked to insurance, super easy and they are familiar with this process, so that box can be checked off the problem list.

I rent an apartment in Michigan. I just moved in April. In my previous apartment I had some troubles with the Property management, they wouldn't listen to anything I would tell them and were very cold and hostile with me. My upstairs neighbor was a friend of the property manager and would get special treatment (like dibs on my parking space). Finally I said enough was enough and moved to a much nicer place with a much nicer landlord. My lease ended May 1st, but I let them know over a month in advance (back in mid March) that I was leaving mid April. I sent them my keys and completely vacated the unit on Friday the 19th of April.
It has now been over 30 days since I have moved and I am trying to determine what legally counts as 'tenant vacating unit'. I know I am supposed to get my security deposit at the very latest 30 days after 'vacating'. Can moving out of the unit before the lease ends count as tenant vacating unit? Or do they have until June 1st to get my my deposit back?
I am just nervous because I emailed them asking if there was an update on the deposit and they ghosted me.

2024.05.21 09:59 chops_zx INFESTATION HELP! 10k sq/ft frat house. 1970's. neglected by owner for last 20 years - Need help.

My fraternity is living with am infestation but we don't have the money to properly handle it.
A little background.
My fraternity moved into a large chapter facility that was previously occupied by a sober living home for men. This house was built in the 1970's, 3 stories tall, has 22 sleeping quarters, sits on over an acre of land, and has had 50 recovering addicts living there for the better part of 2 decades.
We moved in last September, and the house is in rough shape to say the least. It is obvious very little has been done in terms of repairs, maintenance, or just general upkeeping in the last 20 years. We discovered black mold upon move in, and within a week had a seen our first field mouse. The concerning part was that we would see them in broad day light (sometimes as early as 11am) scurrying through the kitchen while multiple people were in there talking and moving around. This level of brazenness raised some alarms for me immediately.
Basically, nothing was done for many months besides half-assing some shitty mouse traps around the house. The frat brother in charge of the house continued to downplay the situation, and our alum housing corporation is low on money due to lengthy legal battles over the deed (long story).
I'm saying all this to set the stage that I believe there are thousands of mice living in our house walls.
It has gotten to the point that brothers cannot sleep because when the lights are out the mice will be active in their room. Our pantry has unlimited food, and we often find rice scattered across the floor with concerning amounts of feces. There is SO much access to food (its frat house - and a shitty house so no one respects it). There was literally a point where a brother left 162 kraft singles outside in our grill area and no one threw it away for a couple weeks. Brothers will often have to chase the mice away from their food in the pantry, they are brazen and always active. We even had a brother be able to shoot one and kill it with an airsoft gun as it was just sitting atop his dresser. On top of that after a brief scan of the house you would understand that this place is built like a mouse paradise. There is so much space between the walls and everything is connected. Exposed piping networks with holes to lead them into other parts of the house. Lots of open are between walls. I believe their system could be disturbingly vast.
We have already found one nest because it was in a closet in our laundry room, which is connected to the pantry, and it also a frequented spot by our residents, so who knows whats in the walls.
Long story short, winter has come and passed since we moved in and things continue to get worse, due to the abundance of food and warmth. I believe this house has a serious infestation, and I do not think we will get real help that we need. Once an exterminator starts putting holes in the wall, I think we will find a concerning amount of black mold (we have already found spots of it, and some rooms aren't occupied because of how bad they are). This I would imagine will end up costing tens of thousands of dollars to solve, as I think the issue has became so bad that the whole or most of the house will need to be stripped to the studs. This is money our chapter doesn't have and our housing corp isn't willing to pay. Not to mention we have 20 brothers with signed leases for this August.
We have used exterminator traps and they kill them faster then we can replace the traps, but I think its too little too late. There was a mouse problem when we moved in and the enviroment we created for them is Eden.
Sorry for so much yapping, but I felt its a somewhat unique situation given the size of the home and how bad this infestation could really be. We are concerned for our health, and are questioning if parents will actually let their kids live here when they come to move in in August.
I am asking for advice and input. Since we probably cannot go the exterminator route due to the fact the house will probably be condemned when whats hiding in those walls comes to light, we are in a situation where we basically need a bucket to fix a sinking boat. What are some traps that can kill a lot of mice? How do we go about battling an infestation of this size? Is mold-x paint effective at protecting us against what is surely festering within the walls? Is it too far gone?
We are just college kids who are in over their heads and need some advice.

The outlet box cap and globe make the whole process quite safe and easy. I particularly liked the copper-free aluminum and stainless steel screws, which really upped the corrosion resistance of the product. That's something we can all appreciate, right?
One thing I noticed was the high quality replaceable porcelain socket with high temperature leads - it's clear that they've put a lot of thought into durability. It's always a relief when you don't have to worry about replacing parts for a while. I recently had the opportunity to test out the Kidde 10 Year Worry-Free Sealed Battery Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector, and let me tell you, it's quite the experience. While some of the reviews I came across had high praise for the product, I personally didn't have the best luck with it.
The first thing that stood out to me was the ease of installation. It's a simple process, and the instructions are clear. But once I had it up and running, I noticed something concerning: it would occasionally false alarm. Now, I'm not talking about a few random beeps here and there. This thing would go off like a fire alarm during a zombie apocalypse.
The voice alarm feature was supposed to be a perk, but honestly, it just made it worse. Instead of a calm, clear voice letting me know there was an issue, it sounded like someone hitting a red siren button. It was absolutely terrifying, and not conducive to a good night's sleep.
On the positive side, the sealed-in lithium battery did last for the full 10 years as advertised. And the end-of-life warning was a nice touch, letting me know when it was time to replace the unit.
However, the cons definitely outweighed the pros here. The false alarms were a huge issue, and the voice alarm feature was more of a hindrance than a help. After experiencing these issues, I had to permanently disable the alarm, which kind of defeats the purpose of having one in the first place.
Overall, the Kidde 10 Year Worry-Free Sealed Battery Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector didn't live up to my expectations.
