2024.05.14 15:08 YourlocalTitanicguy Odd Titanica: Hollywood sleaze

In this edition of “Odd Titanica”, we are going to dive into the sleazy, opportunistic world of show business. A world that comedian Fred Allen said of, “you can take all the sincerity in Hollywood, place it in the navel of a fruit fly, and still have room for three caraway seeds and a producer’s heart”. Hyperbolic? Let’s take a look at Hollywood’s response to the Titanic disaster to see that there really is no business like show business.
Dorothy Gibson and the lost, first, film are well worn trivia by now. The traumatized actress rushed into production, her inability to process her trauma causing her mental breakdown, collapse, and retirement from acting immediately after the film was finished - it’s a perfect story to demonstrate the callousness of the film industry. But there is more to the story, and digging deeper shows us that “Saved” may have been the least sleazy project undertaken by the studios.
Dorothy’s account of the sinking and the suffering she endured filming “Saved from the Titanic” are predominantly found in two sources - The New York Dramatic Mirror and Moving Picture World. These were trade magazines, published weekly, and consisting solely of material related to the stage and screen business. These would be announcements of upcoming features, casting news, celebrity gossip, technical news - anything the movie star to the man sweeping the floor at the cinema needed to know. And they included ads … lots and lots of ads.
Immediately realizing that Titanic was not only a horrible tragedy but an incredible business opportunity, Moving Picture World got to work. As people stormed White Star Line offices, and raided newspaper carts for any drop of news regarding the sinking, Moving Picture World provided the latest in Titanic news; or perhaps we should say “Titanic” news.
The headlines of the April 27th issue may have screamed TITANIC, but as the public grabbed their copy and hurriedly flipped through the pages, they found that what they were actually given was ads. Those eye grabbing headlines were followed by much smaller print-

THE GREATEST MOTION PICTURE OF NATIONAL INTEREST - THE SINKING OF…. the big battleship. Remember the Maine!
THE DEATH SHIP...a sensational two reel drama of the sea containing one of the most thrilling dynamite explosions imaginable!
For all the slimy marketing tricks, flipping through the pages still has plenty of legitimate ads for real Titanic newsreels, movies, and a specific type of presentation known a Myriorama involving painting, music, and recitation. But, show business would strike again - the ads were legitimate, but what they were advertising was not. History has sort of forgotten the huge demand for Titanic media in the wake of the sinking, something that didn’t really exist. When cinema owners would order these “only surviving genuine negatives of the disaster” complete with lobby display package, they instead received-
our astonishment to find the Lusitania and Olympic, and one or two scratch films of ancient days posing as pictures of Titanic.
But they didn’t stop. Animated Weekly advertised that they were “the first to reach the wreck… chartered a tug from Cape Breton and rushed to the scene while the survivors were still in the water”. Cinemas began to promote footage of the sinking. Audiences wrote their disgust to Moving Picture World-
These representations are to the point of criminality … Take, for instance, the picture showing the Titanic with about a sixth of her forward length stuck into the iceberg. Everybody knows the collision did not occur in that manner!
They pointed to the following ad as an example - FIRST PICTURES OF THE TITANIC OCEAN DISASTER. The cinema owners responded by noting that they had misread, crammed in tiny letters were the words “sunk in” so that ad actually read FIRST PICTURES OF THE TITANIC sunk in OCEAN DISASTER. It was the customer's fault, they said, to be stupid enough to think anyone could have actually filmed the sinking.
Once this ruse was discovered, the studios shifted gears. The next step was to advertise film along with presentations by “A Lecturer who was on board”. When the audience realized the lecturer was not on Titanic and demanded a refund - the response from the managers was
Those signs didn’t say he was a survivor.
… and any attempt to charge him with the crime of fraud was absurd because, in his own words-
Of course I didn’t give him his money back. The sign didn’t misrepresent anything. West was on the Titanic, the sign didn’t say when he was.
…which was true. The lecturer, Eugene West, had visited Titanic while she was under construction at Belfast.
As for the movies themselves?
We said we had pictures. If people were foolish enough to think we meant moving pictures, that was their fault.
This particular cheated audience member was told if he wanted his money back, to go on the street and sing for it. Whether it was this, or something else, eventually the public snapped and began hauling out cinema managers and beating them in the streets. By May, the mayors of Boston and Memphis had banned the showing of any Titanic pictures - moving or still- within the city.
But, where was Dorothy in all this? Tucked in the very back of the magazine, after another newsreel ad,, we get to the celebrity sighting and gossip section. Ed Lux of the Rex Film Exchange was in town, Dan Markowitz of Fox Pictures was as well, Arthur Schmidt of the Victor Film Company was seen having a lovely spa at a Turkish Bath, Sam Gobel of the St Louis Motion Picture Company has been walking up and down 42nd street, we don’t know if Southern film maker Henry Wasserman is still here but he might be, Dorothy Gibson survived the sinking of the Titanic, and the Director of Selig Pictures took some actresses to Santa Catalina for a swim and a photoshoot and they had a great time.
By the following edition, on May 2nd, Moving Picture World was also able to provide its readers with the first stills from “Saved from the Titanic” and a feature on Dorothy. Along with this, tucked in the editorials, the magazine finally published a piece of truthful news about the Titanic disaster-
Senator William Alden Smith … declined to grant permission to have the cinematopgraph make a record of the sessions of the committee. “The sessions” he is quoted as saying…”are solemn affairs and must not be hippodromed or commercialized”. He is, however, falling into a serious error in judgement-
…they sniffed.
As a matter of right, the camera man ought to have been permitted. The day of the enfranchisement of the motion picture will surely come .. which will give equal rights to the cinematographer and the newspaper man.
Then, among the illegal false advertising and reports of public brawls at the cinema, they ended with-
The lesson of the Titanic disaster and all its incidents can be made far more impressive by pictures that move than by mere words in cold letters.

2024.05.14 15:06 Anna-papaya Where can I purchase genuine leather sofas/couches, sectionals? Preferably European/Portuguese manufactured? Shipping to the Algarve?

Looking to purchase genuine full leather sofas, sectional, chairs etc. made in Europe. Preferably made in Portugal
I'm currently renting a furnished apartment. The sofa I have right now in my space is an Ikea klippan 2 seat. It's in terrible shape. Brand new is 259€
I've been here 9.5 months already. I anticipate I will be here longer seeing that I haven't got an initial residency appointment yet.
I'd like to start making my apartment feel more like home. I was hoping to toss out this old sofa and buy something I enjoy more. When it's time for me to vacate, o can just replace what I threw out with a brand new klippan for 259€. Since the land lady doesn't seem too keen to store any of her things that I don't use in her 2 garages.
Does anyone have any ideas?

2024.05.14 15:02 Puzzleheaded_Dog7931 Why are parts of the North East still so sparsely populated?

When I look at a satellite map of America, Upstate New York and New England have very large and very green pockets.
Why did people migrate westward when there’s still habitable(or is it not?) right on the doorstop of the original colonies.
Edit: I know New York has a large population, but it appears it’s concentrated in 5-10% of the area.

2024.05.14 15:02 WeirdNail1674 NYC marriage certificate and registration

I got back my grand parents marriage certificate and registration from New York City. They sent back two documents, the certificate and the registration document. The marriage certificate is correct. The marriage registration has a maiden name wrong of my great grandmother.
Do I need to show the registration document or just the certificate? I am asking because I will need to make an amendment if I need the registration documentation as well and not just the marriage certificate. Thanks!

2024.05.14 15:01 sidusnare [Talk] This film festival spotlights efforts to preserve and discover lost movies

https://www.npr.org/2024/05/13/1251040886/this-film-festival-spotlights-efforts-to-preserve-and-discover-lost-movies
The Restored and Rediscovered film festival begins Monday at the Jacob Burns Film Festival in New York City. It's meant to put a spotlight on movies that have been since lost.
AILSA CHANG, HOST:
Nearly half of all movies made before 1950 have been lost, according to some estimates. That's why film historians and archivists are racing to preserve older movies. The Restored and Rediscovered Film Festival spotlights these efforts, and it kicks off today at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, N.Y. One of the festival's offerings is this rarely seen 1971 film, "Bushman." It's about the racial politics of 1960s America as seen through the eyes of a Nigerian immigrant.
(SOUNDBITE OF FILM, "BUSHMAN")
UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #1: (As character) Man, I can't get used to these strange Black people in the world (ph).
UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #2: (As character) I'm Blacker than you are.
CHANG: Senior film programmer and critic Monica Castillo is here to tell us more. Welcome.
MONICA CASTILLO: Thank you for having me.
CHANG: Well, thanks for being with us. So can we start with that film, "Bushman"? Like, I've heard it described as half drama, half documentary. What was this film about exactly?
CASTILLO: It's a really interesting film that blends narrative nonfiction and fiction. You're following a Nigerian exchange student as he kind of explores identity, ideas of home and belonging in counterculture San Francisco in the late 1960s. And he even embraces the name Bushman as well. You know, and his different questioning and answers throughout the different characters that he meets.
But then all of a sudden, the movie comes to a screeching halt. And then somebody else comes in front of the frame and tells you that the actor playing the main character was arrested on his own college campus and deported. So then that's when the documentary aspect really comes in. And it's a talking point for the way that Black students are treated, the way that immigrants are treated. It's a really remarkable film.
CHANG: So interesting.
CASTILLO: Yeah.
CHANG: Well, I do want to talk about the work involved in bringing a film like "Bushman" to audiences on the big screen. Like, what does it take to restore a film? What do archivists have to do to resurrect some of these films, exactly?
CASTILLO: Yeah. So it really depends on the film itself and what condition it's in. There's usually a scanning process, digitizing it. And then once it's in a computer, they can fix the imperfections, whether that be mold or color degradation or scratches. And then through that process, we're able to get another copy on the other end. So that's what we're able to show.
CHANG: What's fascinating about this for me is when I think of restored films, I think of, like, the old silent films or the early talkies. But we're talking about films that are much more modern. Like, I know one of the films you're showing is the 1960 British horror thriller "Peeping Tom."
(SOUNDBITE OF FILM, "PEEPING TOM")
UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #3: (As character) Whatever I photograph, I always lose.
(SCREAMING)
CHANG: Which I understand that critics hated when the movie came out. So tell me why you decided to showcase that movie here.
CASTILLO: Absolutely. And they sure did hate it at that time. But...
CHANG: And why? What was so awful about this movie?
CASTILLO: It was controversial in the way that it depicted violence. And it sort of equated, you know, movie making with a sense of warriorism. I mean, that's very much what it's playing with, but maybe it was a little too ahead of its time. So even though it came out about the same time that "Psycho" did, you know, Alfred Hitchcock was celebrated, and Michael Powell had to deal with the sort of career fallout with all of these negative reviews over "Peeping Tom." But now with this new restoration, I mean, you get to really appreciate the amount of texture and color work that he's working with. Like, he really immerses you in the main character's sort of mania, and it's really fascinating.
CHANG: So what do you ultimately hope that people will take away from watching these films years and years later?
CASTILLO: I really just hope that they keep an eye out for these restorations. They are so special, and you get to see so much more. I was just thinking of the Iranian New Wave film "The Runner," which we have in our series. Before, I had seen a sort of VHS scan copy off of YouTube, and you lost so much of the story.
CHANG: Yeah.
CASTILLO: And then now with this restoration, there's whole pieces of the story that now come together. And you feel this character's journey in a such more emotional and visceral way. That's part of the movie magic.
CHANG: That is Monica Castillo, senior film programmer at the Jacob Burns Film Center. And if you aren't able to make it to the festival in Pleasantville, many of these restorations will be available to stream or to buy. Thank you so much, Monica. Thank you for having me.

2024.05.14 15:01 aznpersuazion Is the Michelin Guide Overrated?

My experience with Michelin in a complicated one. Having gone to one, two, and three Michelin star restaurants across the globe, I've seen Michelin do some great things for restaurants, but I've also seen them bring the demise of others.
Because it's quite apparent what good things come from being highlighted by Michelin, this post is more focused on some of my criticisms of the Michelin guide, and why I think the current structure of Michelin should be changed.
Maintaining "Michelin's definition" of the gold standard..
There have been a ton of amazing restaurants given a one star review. Restaurants don't even need to be "fine dining" to be given a Michelin star, as highlighted by some of the cheap eats that have received a one star review.
But a one star review, can at times, be a curse for restaurants. Often, restaurants receive one star reviews got there by showcasing there strengths. A passion for food and creativity, a desire to share culture or tradition, or an expression of a personal brand of art.
When a restaurant receives a one star review, two things happen.
  1. They begin to get huge influx of customers. Initially.
  2. They start to be compared to other one star restaurants, sometimes even two or three star.
The majority of the time, when a restaurant receives a one star review, the rapidly get a ton of customers wanting to try them. And in just a few months, they start to raise prices. Because money can change people.
And eventually, they start to act as more of a "tourist attraction", and start to lose the original loyal clientele that brought them to where they were in the first place.
Secondly, they begin to compare themselves to the standards of other "higher" Michelin star restaurants.
And that typically means focusing more on a particular brand of fine dining. Hyper-attentive service, an overuse of "micro complex food"(emulsions, purees, colorful vegetation). Just to name a few.
I've seen this unfortunately happen time and time again.
If your customers wanted to go to a Eleven Madison Park, they'd travel to New York. But don't turn your restaurant into a chain of fine dining. You'll start to lose the allure, and it starts to feel like the routine of Mcdonalds or Capital Grille.

2024.05.14 15:00 Specific_Help_5841 Let's Talk The Fall Off

I have several thoughts, so I'll break them down by sections:
  1. I believe Cole was looking to drop The Fall Off some time before the last quarter of the year. I firmly believe that Kendrick interrupted that with seeking out a battle with Drake and now putting out an album of his own. With that said, Cole can not delay The Fall Off to next year. He's been teasing it enough. It has to be this year.
  2. Daylyt said on his ig live a few weeks ago that he's heard The Fall Off as it is now and Cole is on there rapping his ass off and that he is not concerned with pleasing the radio with this album. To me, this is a problem. For all the hype going into this album it has to be a classic, which means it's going to have to have some hit records and have high replay value. It can't just be another Offseason where he is barring up. There has to be a balance...even if he decides to do a double disc where Side A is the commercial songs and Side B is the rappity rap songs. I would actually like for him to take the Future approach with putting out 2 albums in a month's span. Cole needs to get his classic album counter up because right now the industry is only giving him one classic album with 2014FHD. If he putd out two parter for The Fall Off it can bring it up to 3.
  3. His production needs to improve. I'm glad he's back to rapping over other people's beats but we need hits as I said before. The fact that he is still performing No Role Modelz last in his set list and whenever an artist brings him out as a special guest speaks volumes. Yes, it's a diamond record, but it suggests that it is still his most recognized song for the casual listener. That song is 10 years old. Less T-Minus (unless he repeats what he did with The London and Huntin Wabbitz), more Tay Keith, Boi-1da, Hit Boy, 808 Mafia, Sonny Digital, London, Mike Will, ATL Jacob with a balance of Conductor Williams, Elite, and Alchemist beats. We need a balance of beat switches, southern-layered trap production and boom bap beats. I be forgetting sometimes that he's a southern rapper because of the New York back pack influence that he can't seem to shake.
  4. The album has to be cohesive. I want him to bring back storytelling throughout the album or have a consistent theme to make it really feel like a project. Not just a playlist of songs where he's barring other rappers up. He hasn't told a story through his album since...2014 FHD. Let's get back to that.
  5. Lastly, no Kendrick or Metro collabs. Not because of Drake, but because they both put Cole in unnecessarily awkward positions for the last 2 months and imo played in his face. Cole is a nice guy but you can't trust people like that.
That's all I got for now. Not sure if I want him to do another no feature album or not. The only appeal in him doing another no feature is that if this album is a classic, he can flex that he did it on his own again. But if you have artists that you would like to see featured please share.
Thoughts?

So I'm flying out to Seoul from new york in June, and will be taking my computer with me. I have 360mm NZXT AlO liquid cooler in my computer.
Should I have to worry about my computer being thrown out because of liquid? Or switch it out to air cooler? Any helpful answer would be appreciated!
Thanks
