2024.05.15 01:08 CaptainAthleticism Really, but what I believe about supplements and fitness

I can't lie. I might tell you I believe in the exact same thing of whatworks or what doesn't. I, most of all, above all else, would hands down out right tell anyone that training is most important than anything, and couldn't care regardless of whoever it is I tell that to whether if you're a pro bodybuilder or been working out for years thinking you've understood all there is to technically know about the body.
However. This is me being honest about supplements. Yeah, I could absolutely wholeheartedly agree on that besides the big two anything else isn't likely ever going to be worth your time or energy to even put thought into taking just to fullfill some kind of goal you're reaching for even when all else like training and nutrition has failed you. I know this because it's not like I wasn't guilty of ever taking supplements anything I could to still see any kind of difference at all. I'll even be able to say that about creatine even or protein even. I'm 122lbs and people assume that I never learned how to work out even or that I have an eating disorder. I've had 5 years of more serious training, although I started working out when I was 7. I've made a conscious effort to eat as much protein as I possibly could, I've had as much protein powder to fill a shelf of a health and fitness shop even by the time I was in 9th grade, and I kept a tub of creatine in my school gym locker. But, what would be my point then? I wouldn't be the one to say about that creatine or protein might wouldn't be capable of building muscle. None of the supplements I've spent closer to over a 1000$ on have transformed me in any meaningful way and it's not just do I take supplements either, I mean, I've literally put anything that you could think of into my body at some point or another if it was having a chance to improve my health.
But I'm some bizarre mystery. I'm not trying to make saying all this a point about me. I apparently wouldn't respond well to taking supplements even if I try, but I'm not one who's abke to build much mass like other people should have been able to. If there's something, anything, I might believe help someone else on there way to developing themselves, which is under the one assumption that at that point nothing else can possibly work for them, supplements are how I'm going to recommend for them. I'm not going for to be that guy trying simply talking about are any round about ways to make you achieve your body goal, all I'm really interested in is when someone might say there might be a problem, because I'm not the one to come to about advice about your body, if the way your body is does be a problem for you, at best or most the only thing I recommend are supplements, and that's because they work, it's just not how everyone would be thinking or I wouldn't be the one saying I recommend supplements. Do they work or whether they might is a totally separate issue for discussion, but can you trust them? That's all I'm saying. They're supplements for a reason, and only the supplements that do actually work it's those, you should be able trust them. If all that might could have possibly worked in this life in this world were only creatine and protein, or just eating which happens to be important also, then the most majority of the vast fitness industry wouldn't even exist right now, everyone helping people who said nothing is working what I would I have to do would be out of a job right now. I know it's messed up, that's just people's body's.

2024.05.15 01:06 SimplySorbet Best Resources to Share With Parents About PTSD in Adults?

I recently opened up to my mom about my PTSD and also somewhat about another disorder I live with (schizoaffective disorder, depressive subtype).
I would like some suggestions of resources to share with her to help her understand my PTSD and how it affects my daily life. Especially, as working is a bit hard for me right now even though I have a job.
My PTSD is from sexual assault if that makes a difference. Thanks guys, this community is so helpful.

2024.05.15 01:04 DearKangaroo4266 No way out

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to read this.
My life is in a terrible mess & just continues to spiral downwards at a rate of knots. Where I’m at has been heavily influenced by mental illness (bipolar disorder) but equally I take full responsibility for my actions.
I have 2 kids. All I care about is them. But this life I’m living isn’t sustainable.
I’m 42. I’ve been with my wife for 22 years & we’ve been married for 17. Things were good until 7 years ago. At that time my eldest child was 3 & my youngest was a baby. I had a good enough career for my wife to not work for the foreseeable. I had a history of anxiety & depressions & 7 years ago I was put on an antidepressant. I hadn’t had my bipolar diagnosis (won’t get in to all that here) & taking an antidepressant without a mood stabiliser if you’re bipolar generally ends badly. I’d not long started work at a new company & I began to feel very unwell. Even after stopping the antidepressant (when I was diagnosed soon after), I was very unwell for several months. I couldn’t do my job. My wife was at home with a baby & I didn’t want to worry her. I pretended to go to work & sat in my car all day. I thought it’d pass & I’d be better, therefore never having needed to worry her, but things got worse. Sitting alone all day every day contributed. I ended up in hospital a few months later, having suffered a huge breakdown. Even though I had good intentions to protect her, my wife felt hugely betrayed, which I can understand. She has never forgiven me.
I was off work for another 6 months after I got out of hospital. We had very little money coming in & had to borrow money from my wife’s parents. They were very cruel about my mental illness & told me I should be ashamed of myself. I found my way back due to the love for my kids. I got back to work in a more junior role, but have never regained the person I used to be. I’ve been so heavily medicated since my diagnosis & my world’s been turned so upside down that he’s lost.
I had a few years of relative stability & we were able to rebuild some of the damage. But my wife never forgave me. We haven’t had an intimate relationship since before it happened. Then lockdown came & I started to wobble. I got an appointment with a private psychiatrist through my health insurance & he put me on the highest dose possible of a medication called pregabalin (for anxiety).
Fast forward a few months (about 3 years ago) & I had a terrible manic episode. I don’t remember much of it but I had a good salary & credit rating, so was able to take out a lot of loans. Long story I buried myself in tens of thousands of £s in debt. When I came to & that episode ended, I was distraught & had to go to great lengths to hide it from my wife. As I’ll come on to, in all honesty I’m afraid of her. Also, when is a good time to tell someone that? After a year of hiding letters etc. I sunk in to a bad depression in September / October. I’ve been in it since & it continues to worsen.
I’ve been off sick all year. I was hospitalised in January as I was in crisis. It’s been a terrible ordeal for my wife. Illness or not, I’ll never forgive myself for what I’ve put her through.
I’m at home all day because the depression has just made everything impossible. I understand my wife’s frustration but all she does is shout at me. I must sound pathetic, but it’s been this way for years. I’m afraid of her. When I tell her she’s being aggressive she denies it. She gaslights me a lot. She calls me lazy & a failure. She tells me to “f off back to work”. There are some days when it’s not too bad but most days it’s constant & extremely aggressive.
My youngest has now been at school full time for 2 years. My wife won’t get a job. She gets angry with me about problems with the house but won’t work. The last time it was mentioned she made my life hell for weeks. I experienced a lot of abuse as a child & can’t stand or cope with bad atmospheres in the house. She kept saying I’d “told her to get a job”.
She knows what I’ve been going through but hasn’t even brought it up. My salary is going to drop soon as I’ll move on to the income protection plan. She’ll then be forced to work so God help me. I’m terrified.
My mental health is a mess. I forgot to mention that the pregabalin prescribed during lockdown has become something I’ve abused the last year or so. I take more when I get my prescription & leave myself with less for the rest of the month. It’s the only temporary relief from this terrible depression & how I’m treated at home.
I have no parents or siblings. Nowhere to go. It would break my heart to leave my kids but I’ve come to realise if I don’t get away from my wife then this is only going to end in one outcome. I’m not far from it at all. I’m terrified of what she’ll do. I would be able to pay the core bills on this house (around £2200) & get a cheap airbnb (I’d need to live on canned food) until this house is sold. But she’d need to work to pay for groceries & ‘non-bill’ things. She can have all the equity from the house when it’s sold. All I want is for the kids to be ok.
One way or the other it’s terrifying: I live with the aftermath of telling her about the salary drop (if my mental health gets any worse it will be dangerous) or I find the courage to leave. If I leave I dread to think what crazy stuff she’ll do.
I’m exhausted, humiliated, ill & I’ve had as much as I can take. I’m only still here for the kids’ sake. But the bad thoughts are creeping in more & more
My wife hates me. I haven’t had a hug in years. She shows no compassion whatsoever. She makes it so blatantly obvious that she can’t stand me but that she’s just here because she has nowhere else to go.. It’s horrific. I haven’t explained it all well enough here. It feels like hell on earth & I’m on countdown now until this explodes one way or another. I’m already at the end of my tether. I just have to make sure that I am still here for my kids. Maybe not in the same house. But I can’t sink any lower & not be here at all

2024.05.15 00:57 kakeyuri Going in and out of episodes; frequent mood swings?

This is my first time posting to reddit but I hope some of you might be able to help me identify what I’m going through, because I genuinely don’t know what’s happening.
CW: eating disorders, depression, disassociation?
A little context: I’ve struggled with anorexia and bulimia for many years, but i’ve gotten a lot better over the past year. I genuinely didn’t have any thoughts regarding it until the past few weeks. Obviously relapsing is normal but this time it’s very different. Everytime I’ve struggled with this it’s been continuous and it went on for months or years on end, constantly thinking about it. But this time it’s like I’m going through very quick phases. For example, just until yesterday I went through multiple days of fasting and I cried for hours after eating a snack. But today I suddenly feel totally fine with eating and don’t feel a single negative thought about it. And this cycle has been going on for probably a month now. Like how can I go from counting every calorie and every step to totally not caring to counting every calorie again in the matter of days?
Paired with that, I go through depressive and disassociative episodes that last for about a week, in which I genuinely feel completely disconnected from everything around me and as if everything in my life, including me, was fake. Every noise sounds like a sound effect and every phrase anyone says to me sounds like a rehearsed line from a script that I’ve heard before. Kind of like a time-loop or Dejavú type thing. Again, about two days ago I called my friend and told her that I seriously don’t believe I’ll ever get rid of this feeling and that I’ll feel like this forever. Even on the call I told her that I don’t think I’m actually talking to her and that it’s all simulated. But today I felt like myself all of the sudden again and it’s like all of that never happened.
These things can even happen in the span of one day to the other, where one day I cannot even get out of bed and the next I could do 50 things all at once.
This is kinda long and I don’t expect anyone to even see this, but if you do and might have a clue on what this is… help? Thank you.

2024.05.15 00:57 Vegetable-Tap-759 help, my mom is very paranoid

hi, my mom has been very paranoid for the last 1.5 years. she thinks she is being watched by the cashiers whenever she goes to the store. It has started getting worse this past year. -this all started back when my other family members were don’t like came to our house w/o invite and overstayed their visit. my dad was very sick and they were getting very involved in my mom’s method of care toward him(pills she gives him, food she feeds him) -they were very emotionally and mentally abusive toward her and she is very tramitized from it -she believes she heard them saying they will file a report on her, and she thinks they want to do this so she goes to jail and they can take all of my dads money instead of her -she believes they would try to prove that she does not take good care of my dad -she barely goes to the store bc she is so afraid that she is being spyed on.
I am not sure what to do. can someone please help? i feel she has a disorder or have paranoia and needs to speak w a professional. I want her to talk to a therpist or doctor, but she gets very upset if someone doesn’t believe what she is saying. I don’t want to invalidate her feelings but i know i need to somehow intervene before this gets worse. I have been there for her trying to listen to her and be sympathetic but that’s not enough.

2024.05.15 00:56 katarAH007 Where to go, what to do..

Apologies for the scattered thoughts. I feel like we get so many of these posts but I'm in a rut. I have a strong urge to leave my medsurg floor for something cushy. I feel bad bc we're already short staffed but I'm ready to get out. In june it will have been my 1 year as a new nurse.
I want to apply for a plastic surgery clinic but I'm afraid I wont hold up to their standards. I'm good at working as a team, taking direction, certain skills like gtts, IV's (at times), & patient care but I can be really affected by shitty team members, esp while being new (ik that's everywhere).
My fear is if I leave for the clinic, I'll be stuck at another job I hate with people who barely want to be there but I'm desperately searching for a job that wont give me anxiety beforehand. Ik clinic can be boring but my health is at an all time low (im on nights)
I want to stay at my current hospital system bc their benefits are great, but they barely have what I'm looking for. My top 3 are specialty clinics, plastics, & informatics. Where have you left to while you tried to figure out what is for you?

2024.05.15 00:50 Neat_Imagination_961 Can i use my nursing hours for my med application?

Hello, So im planning on finishing my BSN in nursing, would any of the hours i do either as a student or an RN count towards something ? As in i can put em as example 10k hours of patient care in the step down ICU and ED. As well as maybe 500 hours shadowing a physician ? Or do i have to strictly use volunteer hours to make my application stronger ? Im not applying for a couple years and i am set on finishing my nursing degree and finishing my pre reqs for the MCAT afterwards but i just wanted to hear your thoughts. Thank you

2024.05.15 00:47 Cautious-Assist-3317 I don’t know what else to do. If you relate to any of this… please comment.

I am 20F, and a college student. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder the day I turned 18, and have been treated for it since I was 15 (my dad has it and I’ve always shown symptoms). I have been taking my meds for 5 years (lamictal, latuda, prozac). As a bit of a backstory… my first suicide attempt was last November, after my birthday. It was in response to my then abuse boyfriend breaking up with me. I took my entire bottle of Prozac and overdosed (I was told by doctors if I would’ve taken 10 more, I wouldve died).
Ever since, my life has not been the same. I quite literally can not function without my boyfriend, I don’t miss him, I miss the stability I had for two years of my life. EVERYTHING is different now. Every. Single. Thing. Waking up in the morning is my daily reminder that my suicide attempt failed. It’s humiliating.
In the start of 2024 in college I was introduced to cocaine for the first time. It was a social thing, but later became a daily thing. I got laced with fentanyl because I wasn’t careful, and ended up hospitalized. (I was fine within a few hours, just throwing up and rejecting the drugs in my system). My parents obviously found out through hospital bills, and they dragged me out of school immediately, made me come home, and demanded rehab. I somehow begged them out of it, given I don’t think I have an addiction. It was two weeks I was clean, now im back to using everyday. I can live without it, but knowing it makes me feel better, I use it. I’m trying so hard to not purchase any again, and just finish the bag I have.
I am unmedicated (for the absolut first time in my life) and struggling so badly. My parents want rehab, but I am fucking terrified. I’ve always been better at figuring things out by myself. I’m having issues with self esteem and boys. Ever since my ex and I broke up, everything has just been fucked.
I am so incredibly suicidal. To me, cocaine is better than death. That’s a shitty mindset, I know, but to me it’s true. I am in college for english and have dreamt of being an author since I was a toddler. For the first time in my life, I don’t care about my dreams.
Another HUGE issue I am fighting is the feeling that no one will ever love me. Boys are assholes, I just always seem to get entangled with the wrong ones. I don’t deserve to be loved. It’s just all I have ever wanted.
I don’t recognize myself. I am such a good person. I love people so deeply. But I am disgusted with who I have become. I’m stuck between wanting my old self back, and just wanting to end my suffering. I don’t have any plans or anything, but suicide is all I think about.
I don’t know what to do with my life. I feel like it’s over. If anyone relates to even the tiniest part of this, please comment. I’m truly at a loss.

2024.05.15 00:45 QuickStomach Doctor checked wrong box on Natera lab form

I got a blood draw for NIPT at 12w2d and got a call from my doctor’s office today (13w3d) with my results. Unfortunately, the doctor’s office checked the box that said I didn’t want results for deletion syndrome. The nurse that called said this is a common mistake because the box that says you don’t want to know the sex is right next to the box that says you don’t want to test for deletion syndrome.
I’m now out of town until next week and so will have to wait a week for another blood draw, then another week+ for the results. I’m so so anxious and a little peeved with my doctor’s office (though I should have read through the form more carefully - they did verbally confirm everything with me ahead of time though!).
I was a little shaken up when they called and forgot to ask about the timeframe. When I was making my appointment for the initial testing, they were really specific about it being between 11.5 and 13 weeks. Since I’m out of town, the earliest I’d be able to get another blood draw is 14w2d. I called my doctor back to ask but they had already closed for the day.
Anyone know if the timeframe will mess up the testing? And anyone else ever deal with this? I just want to be able to tell people about this pregnancy and am bummed about this speed bump.

2024.05.15 00:36 Dear_Pin0309 Unrealistic Marketing Expectations - How do I handle this situation?

Can someone please help me with this situation, I’m desperate! So I am a marketing specialist at a med spa. I get paid $23 an hour with no benefits and no PTO, I clock in and out. I come from corporate making 55k salary with all benefits and unlimited PTO. That job was extremely boring and I wanted to get into an industry I am passionate about so I took this opportunity. I also have my bachelors in marketing.
So there are 2 owners, one is a doctor. There is one front desk, on patient care coordinator, and 2 nurses. I have been there since January and I have revamped their entire website, worked on SEO and google ads, I have taken months worth of content and scheduled it out for months to post across multiple social platforms. I have planned and launched multiple promotions that have make 20k+, I have implemented a customized sales CRM to create automated follow up scheduling and I complete those follow ups and have trained staff in it. We have seen growth in revenue, bookings, and engagement. I am currently working on creating monthly memberships to build loyalty and have more consistent income.
I had a meeting with my boss today and she expressed concern about the instagram staying steady in terms of followers for the past 2 weeks. She asked if I have done research as to why that is and been up to date with trends in marketing. She asked me what are Instagram “threads” and why am I not utilizing them. She said that this whole time I have been putting out “fires” and installing things that they didn’t have before but were necessary. She expressed that I should be spending less time on the day-to-day and be working on business to business partnerships, working with influencers, planning extravagant events and have those planned for the following year as well, and pop ups on weekends to take them to the next level to open up other locations. She said that these are things I should be bringing to them on my own and not be told to do.
In my opinion, I feel like I am not being paid enough to be sales manager, web designer, social media manager, google ads specialist, influencer marketing manager, partnership marketing manager, event planner, and more. Is it realistic to expect one person to make all of these changes while doing everything else? I am genuinely asking. They scheduled a meeting with me to go over everything I have done and talk about my plan moving forward to take initiative and help them grow.
I don’t really want to bring up salary because I don’t want it to seem like that’s the reason I haven’t done all of these things, but I feel like it is a gradual process and a lot to expect out of one person with a lot of other responsibility that is often overlooked. I do genuinely like the job and I don’t want it to come off like I can’t do all those things, but it will take a lot of coordination from them and a lot of research. Sometimes I don’t even know where to start with huge events and business to business partnerships.
Can someone please let me know if you have any advice? I really appreciate it! I’m just stuck because I don’t have many marketing mentors in my life. I feel like typically in marketing you are a “specialist” in one or two paths of marketing, not doing everything for a business on your own.

2024.05.15 00:35 kjdlz Baretski's baby? Is his story next?

A friend and i watched the entire show Loved it! They did an incredible and respectful job telling Lali and Gita's story. My question is about Baretski. I watched the show with my neighbor and she said something that seemed plausible but it's way out of left field. I honestly thought maybe she watched ahead somehow but it never came up. Who was the father of the baby that was born hidden and somehow got out of auschwicz (no one carried her) and mother died in the cold while sleeping right? After she had the baby her tattoo number was placed on the list and the older lady took her place. My girlfriend thinks Baretski fathered the baby and when he found out she gave birth put her on the list. That would be one hell of a story. I think the baby was conceived via rape by an officer not necessarily Baretski. I don't think "the cow" turned her in. I also dont think it was a coincidence she wound up on the list. It's seriously has me thinking. Unfortunately Baretski has a story as well. Everyone there had one. For better or worse I want to hear more. I'd love to hear Baretski's story. He was a tortured soul. Dealing with being a 2nd rate officer. Who has people problems. He seems manic with sexual and personality disorders. Were his issues brought on by his environment or was he in service because he was volun-told (drafted) and already had mental issues? Just when my heart would start to find a tiny bit of compassion for Baretski he'd screw up and shoot someone without a care. I'm not surprised how he exited this world. Im surprised he made it as far as he did. If there was a show with Baretski's story who would watch it? 👋

2024.05.15 00:29 HelpfulJello5361 CMV: Disparity in any system is not automatically evidence of discriminatory practices

This seems to be a common sentiment for a lot of people and I think it's a projection of their ideology, which is one not of equality, but equity.
For the purposes of this post I use the definition of equity as meaning "Equal outcomes for all identity groups". But that is not realistic or rational.
Equity is not natural and for companies/corporations for example, you can't expect the demography of the company to match the demography of the surrounding area, and for larger corporations it's especially unreasonable to expect the corporation as a whole to match the demography of the entire country. I'm talking about America, and in a place like America each state has different demography depending on the state and even the county.
But even so, you can't expect the demography of even a county to match every company in that county. People have different interests and capabilities for any number of reasons and that's normal and okay.
I don't think ironworkers are mostly men because they dedicate energy to discriminating against women. Same with construction workers. Or oil rig workers.
I don't think Kindergarten teachers are mostly women because they dedicate energy to discriminating against men. Same with nurses. Or secretaries.
I think this is just a natural reflection of the biological differences between males and females and our natural tendencies, aptitudes, and personality traits.
This could apply to ethnic groups as well, for any number of reasons. Sometimes those reasons seem arbitrary, and that's okay. But I think usually it's cultural.
In 2006, Joe Biden, remarked that "you cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent". I guess what he meant is that most people who own gas stations and convenience stores are Indian/Pakistani/etc. I seem to recall he made a similar statement during a political debate.
People bristle at comments like these, saying they're racial stereotypes. But they're true? The statistics back that up.
I hope the anti-AI crowd will forgive me, but I had this funny dialogue with ChatGPT just now. In asking about Biden's remarks, it says:
This remark was widely criticized as being insensitive and perpetuating stereotypes about Indian-Americans. While the comment was specifically about Indian-Americans, it does touch upon a broader stereotype that certain immigrant groups are heavily represented in the ownership of convenience stores and gas stations.
But then I asked it, "Which demographic group is dominant when it comes to ownership of convenience stores and gas stations?"
And the answer included:
"...one prominent group is Indian-Americans, particularly those of Gujarati descent. This demographic has a substantial presence in the convenience store and gas station industry.
Other demographic groups, including Arab-Americans, Korean-Americans, and Pakistani-Americans, also have a significant presence in the ownership of convenience stores and gas stations."
So...reality is insensitive? This stereotype is bad? But the stereotypes are literally true according to the data.
Does this mean that the gas station ownership industry is discriminating against white men? I don't see any reason to think so. Why is it a bad thing that certain ethnic groups dominate the ownership of various businesses? Asian-Americans owning laundromats is another one that comes to mind.
My thought is, who cares? Why is this a bad thing? I just see it as another interesting quirk of living in a multicultural society. There are certain things attributed to various ethnic groups for various reasons and that's just part of the delightful tapestry of a diverse society.
The way I see it, it's okay that we have lopsided representation of various groups in various different fields. There are many different kinds of companies/hobbies/whatever, and they have many different kinds of work cultures, required aptitudes and personality types for the employees, and this results in sometimes unequal representation. And that's okay.
I could expand on the title of this CMV to relate to many other, more "serious" topics, but that would make this post much longer and much more complicated.
Anyway, a lot of people seem to disagree with the idea that disparity is not automatically evidence of discrimination. Why is that? Change my view.

2024.05.15 00:26 throwaway1792947474 Take your meds

I have been on medications for Depression, (which has been recently re-diagnosed as Major Depression,) ADHD, Anxiet and Panic Disorders since I was a kid. Some of my diagnoses came at later years in my life, like depression and the panic disorders. Either way, the point of my post is to remind everyone to try their best to take their meds and keep up with them. I've been taking auvelity for a few months now and it has genuinely helped me a lot. (I've seen a lot of posts about side effects and things of that nature, and my biggest piece of advice is please talk to your doctor about genesight testing! It really helped me find a medication that works well for me!) But all that aside, it has helped treat my depression and has helped me achieve a more clear state of mind and cut back on a lot of my intrusive thoughts of harming myself.
But, I couldn't afford to get my meds refilled recently along with my other bills, and the 4 days I didn't have auvelity, I sunk back into how I felt before I started it. Not taking care of myself, not eating, not having energy, sleeping all the time, depressive thoughts constantly, and an overwhelming feeling of dread. It was a shocking feeling to go from my newfound feeling of quiet-er brain to loud and overwhelming brain with no spoons again.
This isn't a miracle drug, obviously. I don't believe that is the case for any drug. But I do believe it is one of the better options out there, especially for me! I've been on medications from A to Z and have had little to no luck with any of them with treating my depression for YEARS.
Anyway, long post and I apologize for that. I just wanted to remind everyone to take their meds. Whether it's auvelity, or another med that you need to take. It's okay to need medications.
Have a great day:)
