2024.06.07 21:27 Alternative-Skirt796 Fantasy book about a group of friends on a search or quest who get taken captive by a hidden village/kingdom in the forest

This was a fantasy book about a group of friends, not children but I think they were teenagers or really early adults. There were four or five of them. I can't remember exactly what the search was for but it led the group into the forest/woods and they stumbled upon a hidden or unknown village/town. I believe the villagers used magic to hide the town but I'm not 100% sure about that. Oh, the town was hiding because a power hungry King/Emperor was threatening the entire kingdom/continent.
They are basically held captive/not allowed to leave the town by the villagers while they try to figure out what to do with the group, but the village isn't exactly hostile to them more suspicious of them and protecting themselves. They aren't locked up while they are in town (at least not the entire time, they might have been locked up at first?) because they interact with the villagers.
I think this was a YA or new adult book. I don't remember the exact year I read it but it was likely between 2018-2020. I'm pretty sure the book wasn't new then. It may have been a reissue of an older book but I'm not sure about that.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

2024.06.07 21:17 melodiousmaple Tips for Cruising with a 12 month old!

My husband, daughter, and I cruised together for her first time last month and spent 10 days exploring Ireland with NCL. I couldn't find many resources before our trip about cruising with an infant (and asking brought out a TON of negativity) so I wanted to share what we learned!
Overall, our trip was amazing!! We were gone for 3.5 weeks total, exploring London before embarking on the Ireland cruise. It was our daughter's first international trip, but we've traveled with her pretty extensively through the US. We just booked a 10 day Caribbean Christmas cruise on Royal (she'll be 20 months) and are counting down the days!
Here are some tips/tidbits in random order:
1) The staff LOVE babies and will come interact, play, and visit with your child nearly nonstop. It was really sweet, but something to be prepared for.
2) We did BLW, so our daughter eats normal food. However, she has a dairy allergy that needed to be accomodated. It was a struggle every single meal to have her needs taken seriously, because it was expected that she'd want to eat veggie purees, not curry and steak. If you anticipate being in this situation, be prepared to be super proactive about meals. We were so glad we packed a bunch of her favorite granola bars to tide her over while we negotiated with the wait staff each day.
3) Pack extra of any meds you might need. She started cutting molars halfway through the trip and we quickly ran out of the baby Tylenol we packed. It was nerve wracking trying to find meds in another country and hope she tolerated them well.
4) Invest in a slim profile pack and play and stroller. We loved our guava and bringing our own sleep space gave her consistency throught the whole trip. The stroller we brought fits in the overhead compartment of an airplane so it's small and light. It's so much easier to wear the baby and carry the stroller on and off the ship, especially at tender ports.
5) Babywear as much as you can! It's so much more convenient than trying to navigate crowds and elevators with the stroller.... But still bring the stroller. We almost left it at home and we're SO GLAD we didn't.
6) Find the infant play room on the first day. We spent hours there each day letting her get all of her wiggles out! It was the size of an inside cabin but the staff rotated the toys each day and she LOVED IT!
7) Bring a sound machine, even if you don't use one at home! It was so nice to drown out the sounds of life at 6PM so she could sleep uninterrupted.
8) Embrace the slower pace! Bring a few good books and a card game to play with your partner. We loved getting to just hang out and relax while she slept without the guilt of feeling like we should be out at a show or a bar.
9) Don't over pack. Baby doesn't need more than a few outfits. Just wash whatever is dirty in the sink each night.
10) Bring some new, interactive toys for the restaurants. We gave her a busy book for her birthday that was perfect to bring along for meal times.
11) Bring an extra 2-3 days worth of diapers and 2-3 extra packs of wipes. We used wet wipes for EVERYTHING on the ship and ran out way faster than anticipated.
12) Don't let the naysayers get to you. People have a lot of opinions about traveling with babies and small children, but those opinions don't matter. The memories you will make with your child will be unforgettable! On the third night of our cruise, we woke our daughter up at midnight to watch the northern lights from the helipad. I tear up every time I look at those photos!
Our number one piece of advice is to BOOK THE TRIP!!! You are going to have an amazing time as a family and make the most special memories!

2024.06.07 21:16 Forsaken-Serve3598 My extroverted friend exhausts me and I feel I just don’t want to be her friend anymore.

I’m 32, male. I’m very much a solitary person. I enjoy my alone time. Reading a book, playing video games, editing videos for my YouTube channel, watching tv. I have an extroverted friend of 6 years. 32, female whom I met at work. She loves to go on random adventures for food, drinking and such. Which is fun sometimes because she would get me out of my shell. But I’m tired of trying to pretend to be someone I’m not. I don’t want to go to a bar. I don’t want to go on some random trip. I like my quiet place because that is where I thrive.
Mind you I don’t mind going out at all. But I prefer to go out alone. To a movie, to a cafe etc. I enjoy that.
She calls me frequently and talks to me for hours about drama going on in her life and I honestly have lost the ability to care anymore. I just don’t want to talk and would rather immersively read “The Hobbit”. Her and I are total opposites. I’ll put it like this, if she hadn’t initiated the first interaction with me, we wouldn’t have been friends at all because I would never go out of my way to introduce myself to someone for no reason.
I used to think something was wrong with me. But I find this to be a nice character trait that describes me. Not a flaw.
I want to start saying no to hangouts since they really don’t benefit me and leave me drained.
Has anyone else been in the same boat and have how did you handle it?

2024.06.07 20:52 throwawaybadatrlshp I need to stop. This is the second time I’ve hit rock bottom. Think I just need to vent to people who get it…

Hi guys,
Thinking back, this is not my first Reddit post of a similar nature. I think all my life I’ve been addicted to things (weed, porn, “self help”, exercise). This is just one that’s been the most detrimental. I am a problem gambler and need help. I think I also need a place to just let it all out. Hopefully people will read and comment/resonate but I’m literally unable to concentrate at work because things are bad again. I apologize for it being long and you will all likely skip but if anyone reads, thank you.
I have a lot of trauma and am very lonely a lot of times. I had a bad experience being social and I think people pick up on my extreme awkwardness but they do not make me feel welcome, they come across judgy and I feel like I’m performing a dance begging for acceptance. So I spend even more time online (and have been like that since childhood) and don’t get much social interaction. This is relevant to how I got so sucked in so far.
Growing up, my parents were not only strict, but very strict about money. We were poor and they always told me to avoid debt but made it more about school debt (which I did avoid). They definitely talked about predatory credit card practices etc, but the one thing they did not ever instill in us was mitigating problem spending and gambling. Not just me but my mom and sister have really bad spending habits on food and unnecessary purchases…but I’m getting a bit ahead…
I didn’t get a credit card until a bit later, and didn’t have a job until about 2018-19 at 21. Even then, I barely used the CC and also barely drank. I hated gambling at a young age because I only know it as the casino in big cities with the excessive alcohol and lights and cigar smells I hated. Of course I was on my high horse at a younger age saying people were just “paying money to lose money and that made no sense”…My parents went to Vegas a lot, not weekly but every maybe 3-6 months because of comps. And us living close. I was mostly there just to watch my siblings and never went down to actually be in the casino. The vibes just always made me uncomfortable.
The one thing I did do was buy stocks. I remember briefly trying to understand the day trading stuff and I was so overwhelmed I just stuck to my traditional buying stocks and leaving them like a savings. Did good all the way until COVID, everything was down and I had to quit my job to move for school and was so burnt out from working (as “essential” while everyone else was not working) that I just took time off from work for like a year and a half. Spent all my stock market savings that was basically just all my money minus the interest made because of the COVID dip. I sold at the worst time possible but chose to do that instead of just getting work or even trying to learn about getting unemployment for my “mental health” LOL.
Right in my senior year of college I had a roommate who used a draft fantasy sports book. Never knew about money lines or anything about sports period, because I was too lazy to figure out sports rules, let alone betting line math…but I wanted to be accepted as a man and thought sports would be a good way to learn and build friendships…and “investing” money into it seemed like a worthwhile trade.
He explained oveunder props. Easy as cake. You think they’ll go over a certain line and you pick that. Even easier to upload your card and make an account. I thought it would be harmless…
I made one, did okay, but no crazy bets just $30-50 MAX like every couple of weeks. Trying to get into sports and fit in with the boys…. Didn’t care too much about losing $20 here and there and that’s my problem…
I then bring this up to a classmate in our data science class in 2022 wondering if there’s ways people can track player data…who tells me about “tailing” people who post their player picks online. Never knew about that/that there was already a market (bc I was new to sports).
He tells me about a guy he follows. Guy has a site with “the best prop data”. Clearly know this other guy is just selling his services but the service seems so beneficial. “Best hit rates in the game!” “No one has data like this”. Straight snake oil salesman tactics and I’m so aware of it, but it’s like I just didn’t care. Of course it’s just like ESPN data all on a histogram and not that revolutionary, and it’s like I already know I’m signing up for getting played but I just accept it(likely because I have settled for a lot in my life). I get a membership. I think oh I’ll make a ROI worth the cost of the membership and more! Right….
That was in about March-ish I think of last year. (Yea it was, because I specifically remember the old classmate asking me about March madness…). From March to June I had losses, but nothing super horrible, I didn’t really track it but I had never spent more than $100 max and probably only spent around $175 a month which was about the rate of all my subscriptions combined. but around this time I had also just had a very traumatic experience getting robbed and abandoned drunkenly during a party on campus. Somehow I made it back from the party to my house and allegedly my roommate helped me vomit/clean up but I woke up to my wallet and phone gone.
I felt violated, confused because I couldn’t remember certain events, sad that my “friends” didn’t even have my back at certain points. I was angry and really embarrassed and depressed and felt like I couldn’t trust ANYONE around me. Of course, them feeling second hand embarrassment from me, stopped inviting me out and our interactions got so awkward after that. I felt like now my reputation was just that drunk idiot who did god knows what while blacked out. And didn’t really have a lot of support.
My gambling got worse, but I didn’t make that much money so I also didn’t really bet that much either? It’s kind of a blur around that time now and I don’t really remember but I don’t think I was on the group chats/apps nearly as much as I am now. I also deleted them around graduation time because I needed to focus and I needed to save $$$ for my move out.
Fast forward I was in okay-ish shape: was able to get an apartment and higher paying job…but my relationship was strained with my now ex girlfriend. It was bad. I redownloaded the apps during this time. I was trying to plan out our future and she was not helping me. I was basically doing everything myself in the relationship and felt like my “investment” in our relationship wasn’t going anywhere…as she was not communicating and not helping me plan, so i began using that money for bets.
Initially it was “it’s just for fun now that I have more income! I can afford it now” then it was “oh it will be like a side hustle”.
But I got worse. I felt so disconnected and burnt out from my new job in finance, also very numb to large amounts of $$ on screens all day that I started betting hundreds daily. Then tie in disconnected from my ex and now had no friends. I was numb and needed to feel something, and alcohol was not enough. I’d drink here and there but never enough to get completely trashed like before because I was scared of that.
Now remember the subscription? This sub comes with a “chat room” FULL of a bunch of enabling children and their ring leader who makes the datasets. I used to respect what the guy does but I have so many problems with his business model: advertising slightly over 50/50 guesses as a worthwhile investment, getting his data out 5 minutes before games start (obviously so he can make his picks on his own first and then tell the followers after), calling his own patrons idiots and trying to make it sound like he’s the best gambler in the world and that if we’re losing we are just “not doing it right” when he’s really using $100,000s of dollars from subscribers to make his for fun bets while people desperately cling to some sort of “mathematical explanation” for why Alpha McThree is a better pick than Johnny Appleseeds.
I digress again. Basically there’s people around my age (20s) older (40s) and possibly younger all in these chats enabling each other to bet. You feel rushed because you have to “beat the prop bumps” when they move the lines. You feel constantly on edge and that anxiety feels good because of the potential payout, and then horrible when you’re off by one or two players and lose everything.
I became obsessed. It is probably the combination of the rush, the colors, the screen lighting in a more comfortable way to social media…the people encouraging you or congratulating you or worse bonding over shared loss, you start to feel in community.
Mind you, the community itself was toxic. I am part of the LGBT community but never disclosed, and there is so much homophobia and transphobia, sometimes even racism (I mean I get that I’m positing this to Reddit LOL) but it’s just weird to me as a POC who is part of this community to see all that stuff everyday and then say those are my people….and to pay a subscription to be apart of it…it felt like a weird digital fraternity. It felt “cool” to have a badge for my sports book, for people to recognize my nickname, to see the same names everyday, it felt like routine.
Everyday I’d wake up and bet. When I got COVID in December the amounts doubled and I was spending $500 in minutes instead of spread across days. I didn’t even care anymore. I’d keep playing and eventually lose it. Every single time like “I’m just gonna play enough to make my money back and pay off some of the debt and then delete everything!”
It never happens. I’m still $6k in debt, am -$230 overdraft and am now doing the one thing I really said would never do: ask my dad for help. I can’t concentrate on work because I’m so overwhelmed. I just got paid, still two weeks left and I have absolutely no money anywhere. And since I haven’t even paid my mom back the first time I am worried about asking again.
My dad doesn’t really reach out, but he texted me the other day. So instead of responding I just sent him a screenshot of my overdraft and told him I had to pay my apartment security deposit (which is true, technically) but it is really the stupid $600 bet that put me overdraft. I basically paid X amount on my credit card, didn’t see it post, told myself “maybe I forgot to do it” and said I had enough for the bets, lost three idiotic bets and then both the misses and the CC payment posted.
I feel like the “bending” of the truth will l start piling up and that things will stop checking out. He’s probably wondering how I’m overdraft and can connect two and two together (he’s seen my screenshots of bets when I was up, and asked me when I get paid and I’m too scared to say I got paid TWO DAYS AGO and am out -$2000) so I’m even more embarrassed and feel like I’m disappointing everyone.
I already owe my mom, and they aren’t even that rich at all so I feel horrible taking their money trying to pay myself back and then ending up back here again. But I am equally worried of them going nuclear and me being trapped back home/having to give up control of my bank account bc of it.
I feel stuck at my job because I need it to pay off my debt and save money/pay bills. I hate it so much, but need to stay here because of how bad the market is and I think dealing with the stress enables my behavior. I feel worse because I should have $20k saved up by now but instead I’m now total down -$26k. (The 20 I would’ve had saved plus my credit card).
So it’s just my lack of control and unnecessary purchase staring me in the face. Every day. While it takes me weeks to make even a dent in my debt. I literally have nothing in my fridge right now. I don’t know what I’m going to eat next week. And throughout all this my ex and I still talk, she still buys me lunch, she is a saint but our dynamic would not work
I’m meeting with my therapist today, and I contemplate either getting a new one specializing in addiction or stopping constantly one because of the cost but two because I’ll talk about it but I feel like I’m not even changing or doing the work…
I feel alone trying to get out of this hole and like this debt will follow me forever. I also wonder if I feel like I’m addicted to the wallowing too? Like now I have a reason to stay depressed.
How do I get better? Is there even any hope for me? I feel like I’m messing my life up and constantly at the mercy of something else and not myself… people around me have cars and solo apartments and I’m living check to check in debt with no purpose. How do I deal with stress?

2024.06.07 20:30 MmMmVMv I don't know what to ask help for.

Hi I am 22m and I look below avg and i am 5 "6 and i am currently in my final year college, this is regarding my social life I guess.. Since childhood I grow up with somewhat strict parents, they didn't allowed me to go out of house to hangout with someone in my neighborhood so I was alone most of the time, their reason for that was I was in a prospectus school and the kids in my locality will "spoil me", so I became an introvert completely and they used to ask like why don't you talk to your cousins and others ironically. BTW I was not completely friendless I too had friends too. It went on till I was like 13yrs old when my school shuffled classes and I met with some new students especially new girls😅😅 since I was very lonely since childhood I was addicted to porn and my confidence to confront girls was very very low at that time and I somehow open up to them and I had fun like good friends but have never been in a relationship at that time(which I wanted to be) and after school I thought we would continue to hang out but, no the thing was I can talk face to face comfortably but I can't text that much and not good at online chatting so, many of my friends at that time around 2017 Facebook was very popular so many use to chat throug that and I was not using Facebook and boom back to being lonely again. At that time I picked habbit of reading books/novels and I Bing read Harry Potter, and after that I went to boys jr college in my country we have 10+2+3/4 education system so I became very lonely there and my female interactions was close to 0 and I didn't hangout much with boys due to I was depressed thar I lost my school friends and then my communication skills went from 5/10 to 2/10, after 2 yrs I took computer science as clg degree which is of 4yrs in my country.
I was excited that I will try to make friends and atleast have 1 relationship, I made a group of friends in which my crush was also there and out of the blue I confessed my feelings to my crush but, she had a bf and I said sorry and never asked her again but her bf got to know I confessed and we had a fight and she completely stopped talking to me and because of that incident whole group stopped talking to my I was very much broken at that time it was just begging of 2nd year and it was just days before my birthday I was completely lonely again but boys of my group stayed with me supporting me and were there to talk and help I am grateful to them for that.
I tried apologizing but they were not talking to me no matter what the final breaking point was I was organizing a clg event and my friends group were also participating in some activities with other students were also there, during lunch we sat together and we were about to eat and my friend told me that " bro sorry but girls are not comfortable you sitting with us" I said ok and took my lunch and left the clg, went out and eat my lunch crying and asking my self "I am I that bad?" I am I a creep?" I was very insecure about my looks and my parents were not proud of my height cause my father is 5"10 and he tought I would atleast be his height, due to this he started forcing me to do all height growing exercises always saying me that short people won't be that successful in life and mixed with this I completely broke I stopped going to clg and locking my self in my room and addicted to porn more often due to which my grades are still low after some days I decided i will not make my self miserable I went to clg to keep up with studies but I used to see them daily and it felt miserable during that time I made one of my classmate friend and he is my best friend still he managed to help me out of depression and I kind of felt better.

2024.06.07 20:07 Born_Captain9142 What makes some Fantasy authors more popular even though they are as good?

My focus is on Brandon Sanderson, why he has so much attention compare to others in the fantasy-book world that are at least as active as him in fantasy writing?
Many recommend his books in front of others often (mistborn, Stormlight). His books are good story and plot wise but they aren’t the best of the best but still quite good.
Iso why is he so big in the fantasy and booktube-fantasy community above others? Is It because he is most active on the net and most interactive with the fans compare to others? Or is it just me who thinks to much about his position in fantasy community?
I have read some of his books but still don’t get what makes him more popular over other authors at such length?
Here is a list of some popular authors and why they aren’t on the same level as him in popularity on the net.
•George rr Martin. •Joe.Abercrombie •Sarah j Maas •Brian McClellan •Brent weeks •Toni Adeyemi •Anne McCaffrey •Ursula K •Nnedi okorafor •Andrzej Sapkowski •Robin Hobb •Naomi Novik

2024.06.07 19:51 Doom_Douche WTF is happening with GameStop? Start Here

WTF is happening with GameStop? Start Here
Did you just hear "Reddit meme stocks are going crazy again" on the news and wind up here? I wouldn’t blame you for thinking this whole GameStop thing was over years ago.
The media has put out thousands of articles telling you to “Forget GameStop”
The SEC launched a commercial campaign making fun of “Memestock” investors
and almost all of the large investing subreddits don't even allow discussion about GME.
So what the hell is Superstonk and why are there a million of us here over 3 years after the “The Sneeze” (what we call the 2021 run up with a closing price of $82 in split adjusted numbers that the media like to claim was a short squeeze)? Superstonk is a subreddit dedicated entirely to GME investors. We have evolved over time to provide an open platform for individuals to discuss market reform, as well as facilitate retail investors' rights to participate by weighing in and making sure all of our voices are heard on by financial regulators, and vote on shareholder rights proposals. Its been quite the journey considering most of us got into this trade in 2020 or 2021 looking for a good time and fast money.
https://preview.redd.it/ywl6drads65d1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a2cd2ab6f2f9744d35ab680a53e4b5cb7140e369
We were quickly given the moniker “Dumb Money” and they even made a movie out of it. Streaming on Netflix if you want a laugh and a recap. What this film won’t show you however is the back room collusion that took place in order to attempt to stop retail from winning for once. It’s so easy to dismiss us “retail investors” as some foreign group of people. That's you and me they are talking about fleecing. Trading with money we worked for and were taxed on. We aren't playing with other people wealth and skimming a profit off the top. So this sub has been digging into these issues while also memeing and making questionable life decision ban bets. What we’ve come to realize in that time is the game has always been rigged. There is an incestuous relationship between market makers, hedge funds and prime brokers that have allowed them to just print money while intentionally destroying American companies and jobs

Is it too late to invest in GameStop or is this just the beginning of another run up?

Welcome to the burning question millions of people have been wondering since January 2021. Only you can make that call. The last time something like this happened a bunch of overpaid middlemen fuck-wads flipped the table over in a historically unprecedented temper tantrum , got paraded around by a handful of oblivious geriatric political puppets asking all the wrong questions and got off with a slap on the wrist. We were pissed but we didn’t give up. We knew the bear thesis against GME was dead and the people betting against it were kicking the can down a road that would end eventually. Gamers are a tenacious bunch and dumb money has strength in numbers.
Since then GameStop has gotten rid of all its meaningful debt, brought on an incredible board of directors, become a profitable company and has over 2 billion dollars of cash on hand. This subreddit alone has removed over 25% of the outstanding shares from the market by registering them in their own name with something called DRS (the modern digital equivalent of a stock certificate) and prevented those shares from being loaned out to short the stock.
https://preview.redd.it/a90fm9zjs65d1.jpg?width=2091&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3040572004294cbe89787b30da56ca3345e33968
DRS has become a large part of the culture here on Superstonk as it really embodies the attitude of a long term investor. It might surprise you to learn that you don’t actually own any of your shares in your brokerage. This is a massive rabbit hole that I encourage you to dig into even if it's only for educational purposes. We consider it to be arguably the safest way to hold shares while the rest of the world slowly realizes the music is stopping and there are not enough chairs to go around.
GME has already seen historically unprecedented events occur and I for one sleep better at night knowing that my shares are safely sitting on the books of GME Corp and not a copy of a copy of a copy created by synthetic positions. It is very possible that many of the shares being traded today are still vestigial remnants of previously opened short positions that were never actually closed.
The SEC’s own incredibly delayed investigation into the events of January 2021 show no evidence the short sellers closed their positions.
https://preview.redd.it/224j24wms65d1.jpg?width=1608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7e3302dd24a1a8f45c5946117fe8485f05c1885
Remember, GME was short an absolute minimum of 140% (this means more shares were borrowed and sold than existed) and likely much higher based on many other indicators. They even changed the way short interest is calculated after the January 2021 events. When someone shorts a stock, they are betting they can borrow it, pay a fee, sell it and then buy it back cheaper. There is a mathematical limit on how much money they can make doing this but their potential losses if the stock rises are infinite. The higher it goes and the longer they wait to admit they were wrong the more expensive it gets. This is called a “Short Squeeze”.
So here we are 3 years later and the chickens appear to be coming home to roost. A reddit user named Deepfuckingvalue (an inspiration to many of us) has shown how massive his balls are by making an update post on his holdings.
https://preview.redd.it/8yqxaxzxs65d1.jpg?width=3092&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7ade44f1d7aeaafdf987d57dbd1e8134a5106e97
Yes, you are reading that right. DFV started with a 50k investment into a dying brick and mortar retailer and now is worth over a quarter of a billion dollars. Even now, more masochists are piling on and shorting GME AGAIN.
https://preview.redd.it/dd66nu72t65d1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=783b2e9a035e12be93f36cd9209f0f8f54d4e808
So what are we still doing here? A lot of us have the mentality that we won't sell until the financial terrorists behind this see the inside of a jail cell. You can call us stubborn, dumb, irrational or anything else but it doesn’t change the situation. The term “Diamond Hands” have never been more appropriate. Diamonds are forged by pressure and time and we sure as hell have had a lot of both. We have held onto our shares and witnessed violent swings in each direction and kept buying more. I’m starting to ramble here and there's just no way for me to give you an accurate summary of the last 3 years other than to say, we like the stock and think it's going up. Here is a list of resources to get you started. Once you have read them feel free to interact with the members here and ask questions. We will try to be nice.

For the brand new users to reddit or this sub you might not be able to comment or post right away. We have Karma and account age requirements here. We have had to endure a lot of trolling over the years and this helps prevent most of it. In the meantime go participate on some of the other GME subs or join the discord if you just need to express yourself by spamming rocket emojis. Karma and age reqs here:
240 days and 4800 karma to post
120 days and 1200 karma to comment
You might also notice you are not able to tag users or link to other subreddits. It's a long story I won't go into here but these are restrictions that have been put on this subreddit by reddit admins.
For those of you concerned about liking the stock and talking about it, well here's some direct quotes from The SEC chairman Gary Gensler:
"Investors today can get information from more sources than ever before. They can share advice peer-to-peer via new social media platforms, as well as Reddit communities and YouTube channels."
“We should always be vigorously enforcing our laws and ensuring that there’s not fraud and manipulation, but again, we all have a free speech right to go and say to a neighbor, whether it’s online or in person, I like this investment,”
“Our laws are about if somebody’s trying to defraud another person, mislead another person, manipulate the markets,”
"I am not concerned about regular investors exercising their free speech rights online; I am more concerned whether bad actors potentially take advantage of influential platforms."

2024.06.07 19:31 MightyMoosePoop [all] The conspiracy theory boogeyman of the far left socialists that needs to be addressed in this sub - Capitalism having agency - Mwhahahahahahaha!

You heard me far lefties. Many of you have a boogeyman conspiracy and that is capitalism is a nefarious actor out to do harm, mwhahahahahaha!
I challenge those who disagree with thinking capitalism is indeed having agency - a nefarious actor - to then source a definition of capitalism from a respected and published PhD from relevant backgrounds (e.g., economics, political science, sociology).
Until then, the rest of us? Don't you agree you hear all the time how "capitalism does this" and "does that" and is the reason for "all the ills of the world" but amazingly doesn't get any credit. It's the perfect conspiracy theory and reminds me of Qanon.
Here is my lengthy copy/pasta I do all the time to fight this ridiculous crap:
“Capitalism” origins as we know it is from socialists. Capitalism originated originally as a disparaging term.
Capitalism
A form of economic order characterized by private ownership of the means of production and the freedom of private owners to use, buy and sell their property or services on the market at voluntarily agreed prices and terms, with only minimal interference with such transactions by the state or other authoritative third parties.
Markets
The concept of “capitalism” includes a reference to markets, but as a socio-economic system, it is broader; its defining feature is the private ownership of capital (see e.g., Scott 2011). This typically leads to pressures to find profitable investment opportunities and to asymmetries between owners and non-owners of capital. Markets are a core element of capitalism
And from Heywoowd's "Political Ideologies":
Capitalism is an economic system as well as a form of property ownership. It has a number of key features. First, it is based on generalized commodity production, a ‘commodity’ being a good or service produced for exchange – it has market value rather than use value. Second, productive wealth in a capitalist economy is predominantly held in private hands. Third, economic life is organized according to impersonal market forces, in particular the forces of demand (what consumers are willing and able to consume) and supply (what producers are willing and able to produce). Fourth, in a capitalist economy, material self-interest and maximization provide the main motivations for enterprise and hard work. Some degree of state regulation is nevertheless found in all capitalist systems.
Heywood, Andrew. Political Ideologies (p. 97). Macmillan Education UK. Kindle Edition.
Capitalism, as a mode of production, is an economic system of manufacture and exchange which is geared toward the production and sale of commodities within a market for profit, where the manufacture of commodities consists of the use of the formally free labor of workers in exchange for a wage to create commodities in which the manufacturer extracts surplus value from the labor of the workers in terms of the difference between the wages paid to the worker and the value of the commodity produced by him/her to generate that profit.
London; Thousand Oaks, CA; New Delhi. Sage. p. 383. (according to Wikipedia however a direct quote found and secondary source found here.)
Capitalism An economic principle based on leaving as many decisions as possible on production, distribution, and prices to the free market.
McCormick, John; Rod Hague; Martin Harrop. Comparative Government and Politics (p. 345). Macmillan Education UK. Kindle Edition.
Capitalism is often defined as an economic system where private actors are allowed to own and control the use of property in accord with their own interests, and where the invisible hand of the pricing mechanism coordinates supply and demand in markets in a way that is automatically in the best interests of society. Government, in this perspective, is often described as responsible for peace, justice, and tolerable taxes.
Capitalism is the socio-economic system where all property is privately owned, where freely formed contracts form the basis of economic interaction, and where the government does not engage in regulation, supervision, or direction of market processes. In short, it is a government policy of non-interference with the economic lives of its citizens; it is the system of laissez-faire. The proper implementation of a program of laissezfaire capitalism, however, requires an appropriate political system at its base.
According to Sternberg, true capitalism can be defined as “an economic system characterized by comprehensive private property, free-market pricing, and the absence of coercion.” Her definition attempts to set true capitalism apart from forms of political capitalism, including crony capitalism and welfare capitalism, which rely on coercive government action to operate successfully.
Then for a brief history, here is Chapter 1 of the book "Capitalism: A short History". It's basically all about "class struggle".

2024.06.07 19:26 roses-and-dove Current cover letter:

I want to take a second to have a genuine moment with you, as a person, but through my art.
So many have this idea that writing is something you have to do alone. I don’t agree with that. I’ve never written alone. Even if/when I do the act itself in solitude; I always chatted with people, I was surrounded by friends and family; my art reflects how I feel at any given moment. When I read things I wrote 15+ years ago, I can remember the impactful moments and interactions that really helped shape that era. So when I’m around my support system and I feel good? I make art. When I’m stuck in my head, self-isolating from that support system?? Art is how I reach out and ask for help [and as you know me, that’ll make more sense].
Even when I went through a phase of my life where I wasn’t “writing” I was always being creative or an active audience member. So if I wasn’t writing, I was listening to music or playing instruments; practicing calligraphy; reading books; watching new shows and movies. Content is art, and the internet is so integral to this new budding society [and a big part of my personality].
So they—being the many, the few, the minority, or even just you— may be asking… Why are you even doing this? If you even get this far enough to question me about that, you get a point [you might just be the point]. You inspire a part of me to share! It’s not to prove a point, it’s because you ask such good questions. That inspires ideas in me.
I am turning 25 in July and I’m in a unique generational position; I grew up online—again, a big part of my personality—but I’m a student at heart, with the soul of an artist, and the makings of what is most likely undiagnosed-slash-unmedicated adhd … I feel like I had a point in there somewhere, but I digress.
I believe that, culturally, we’re moving past the academic restraints and restrictions that have stifled creativity. I don’t subscribe to “academic” and “proper” grammar because it’s boring… Both to read and to write. At this point it actively excludes brilliant artists who—on average—don’t have access to the same resources or even quality of material [I might be projecting, whatever. I get told my grammar is horrible all the time… but did you have fun reading it???? Exactly].
On paper, it doesn’t seem like I have the “qualities” and “capabilities” to be hired on. One might argue, I don’t have the experience. By whose standards? Since I could hold a pen long, I have written whatever half-thought-out-not-very-original-thought I had based on whatever new concept I encountered. Soon, those concepts became the influences and a part of my writing style. In a way, reading was a way to safely explore the world, and writing was how I processed what I learned. It would later be the tool I used to express myself to the world.
I started telling stories before I could write… or even speak properly, some aspects won’t change [read: I will never stop talking tbh]. I always give the concrete age 7 as a point of reference for how long I’ve been writing. I always had someone to tell a story to; I'm now the oldest of about 8 kids [give or take a parent or two]. I’ve always written for an audience, even if the audience was myself.
I’ve lived the life of a “trendsetter” for my family, siblings, friends, and generally I’ve always been a source of inspiration for strangers who meet me, too. I naturally network and have a support system of artists from all over the world, from different artistic eras of my life, who deserve a platform to showcase how brilliant they truly are. And all I do is talk too much.
I will be taking the world by storm, and have had 25 years of essentially being a genuine artist as my experience. That’s hard to capture on a resume. Imagine what I can do with you guys, as a 25 year old with 18+ years of living artistically and naturally inspiring others to do so. I may not have the “real life experience” you’re looking for, but wouldn’t you rather mold generational talent into a disciplined force of humanity?
When you meet me? You’ll invest in me. How could you not when, after our initial conversation when you’re already thinking about the ways you could utilize my talent…
You’d be creating art like you’ve never had before… and the only thing you have to do differently? You will create art more purposefully, and will want to hold yourself accountable to doing things with and of quality. I won’t tell you what to do, and I will never take creative licenses away from you; but I can lead and guide through example. If this little essay doesn’t show you that I’m everything you didn’t realize you wanted, and everything you instinctually need. What you describe as a “job”, I do already in my daily life for myself and my friends. Difference is? I just don’t have the platform I need to have the impact I want… yet.
Again, you might not know me (yet), but my ability to connect with people is ingenious. If you make it this far in my baby cover letter… you might just agree. You might just find yourself wanting to take a gamble on me. And if not? That’s okay, cause someone will. And when we meet down the line, I can’t promise not to tell the story of how you guys fumbled me… but what was that about digressing?
[Fun fact: I write one of these specifically catered to each job I have enough faith to want. I believe we could do some groundbreaking work, and revolutionize the industry if you add me to your team. Wait until you get me in person and hear my ideas!]
Honestly, if you ever take anything from what I write/say/do: take away whatever emotions I make you feel when you connect with me and my art. Run with it. It might truly be a reflection of how I feel about you. How you interact with my art is honestly more telling than anything else [how anyone treats “amateur” art that isn’t seen as “classically/traditionally trained in the arts]. Tried and tested theory, worked all my life 10/10 works. The more genuinely you interact with my art, you interact with me. I'm enough of a walking paradox to admit it and be human about it. I don’t have the mastery of my arts yet, but at least I’m learning to exercise and stretching those muscles [read: rights].
And dear reader, duh you! The one who always gets to the end (or even reads the entire thing for extra brownie points)… you know the rest lol.
~
(Currently lost in the abyss that is reddit, sorry if you see this twice. Might as well throw in long time lurker first time poster or whatever. Since this basically became a disclaimer, I don’t prioritize grammar as much, as long as my point gets across. Obvious typos does bother me, but that’s what happen when you write on your phone 😭)

2024.06.07 19:14 imreallyjustaguest (Beat GPT!) Novels with inspirational characters, educational content, intelligent dialogues, complex social interactions, and witty humor?

TLDR:
Please recommend exceptional fiction books with inspirational characters, educational content, intelligent dialogues, complex social interactions, and witty humor.
Ideally published after ~1960–1980. Literary masterpieces are a plus.
I usually read non-fiction and very occasionally sci-fi. But now want to explore more traditional (not sci-fi) fiction (a blindspot of mine).
Thank you!
Optional Details (originally written for ChatGPT, but I'm sure you can beat it!) are in the comment.

2024.06.07 19:07 CajunNerd92 A Guide to Janny Wurts' 'Wars of Light and Shadow' Series (and how it compares to Malazan)

Before we begin, please note:
This series as it opens up will have enormous depth and complexity - it will not sprawl, but continue to redefine itself, over the course of its five story arcs. So be aware that 'behind' and beneath the straightforward action in these pages - a whole lot more will come to be 'unpacked' later on. The reveals are going to alter what you think and perceive here - so be ready to have your assumptions upended as you get deeper into the story and with each subsequent arc.
Or as the author herself puts it: "EVERYTHING you think you know is going to be stood on its head, so get ready to watch all of your assumptions kick you in the butt."
'Two half-brothers, opposed - one, a bard and a mage, and the other, a prince bound to justice.'
The series is subdivided into 5 Arcs, with each encompassing another level of the story, characters, and world. There are no cliffhangers, and each book has the same format (opening that builds tension to a convergence at the halfway point, followed by a thunderous rush towards all the way towards the climax) and each arc will also carry the same format in 'overview.' So each volume that opens an arc will 'gear back' to lay foundation to build the unveilings for that arc, and each subsequent volume delivers faster and faster to an explosive finish. Arc finishes will have the full punch, as they are nearly all climax/denouement.
Arc I is one volume, 'The Curse of the Mistwraith.'
'Their cursed destiny will shred the myth of history as written by the victor...'
Arc I sets the stage for the entire series and introduces you to the world of Athera and the characters that inhabit it. It will look very much like your standard classical fantasy world on the surface, but the depths are very much hidden in plain sight and will make themselves known on rereads, as you have more information and context about the world of Athera and the factions that vie over her ultimate destiny.
What's that, reread? Yes, just like Malazan this is a series that is designed to not only be reread, but to give you completely different experiences on rereads as well as you get more pieces of the puzzle and are able to piece together more and more of the full picture that is in play.
Arc II is titled "The Ships of Merior" and encompasses two volumes - Ships of Merior, and Warhost of Vastmark.
'Their clash of ethics will test the deepest foundations of human morality...'
Arc II will not only deepen and enrich the characters that we are already familiar with - but will introduce a few secondary characters of great importance, and temper what you saw back in Curse of the Mistwraith. Not only that, but there are some surprising worldbuilding reveals in this arc that will definitely surprise you and upend some assumptions you might have!
Although these two books were originally written as one volume (and published in hardcover in that manner), there is no cliffhanger ending at the end of Ships of Merior - but since Ships of Merior is practically all buildup for the climax/denouement of Warhost of Vastmark, it is recommended that you read both volumes together, back-to-back, if you are able to.
Arc III is titled "Alliance of Light" and is comprised of five volumes - Fugitive Prince, Grand Conspiracy, Peril's Gate, Traitor's Knot, and Stormed Fortress.
'Bloody ideology will tear apart the world's factions and unmask the pitfalls of prejudice...'
With Arc III, your vantage point will start to be lifted to "world view" - you will start to truly see and understand the various factions, what drives them and what they are all about, and it will totally shift what you thought about them and the planet of Athera from all the way back in Curse of the Mistwraith - this is not Earth, nor is this feudal rule or your classical "monarchy." The factions are not what you thought, and as you discover their moral high ground and foundational purposes, the things you discover that drive them will change what you first imagined they were all about - and you start to grasp that "Charter Law" is not anything like here on Earth, past or present.
Fugitive Prince will gear to set the foundations for not only the Alliance of Light arc, but the rest of the series as well - but don't lose heart, for nothing you read is extraneous and everything has a purpose, even if that purpose won't be clear until several volumes from now. Janny Wurts spent 20 years planning out the series before she even published Curse of the Mistwraith, after all, so have faith that there IS a grand master plan and everything will all make sense and be relevant in the end.
Peril's Gate is the 'tipping point' of not only the arc, but the entire series as well - the climax of Peril's Gate is the convergence point of the entire Wars of Light and Shadow series, and from here every further volume will speed up in pace until the very end, with all of Stormed Fortress acting as the thrilling climax and denouement for the events of the four volumes that came before it.
Arc IV is titled "Sword of the Canon" and is comprised of two volumes - Initiate's Trial, and Destiny's Conflict.
'Fatal ignorance threatens the world's ancient mysteries...'
Sword of the Canon will shift your vantage point to 'planetary view' - the world of Athera herself takes center stage, and you start to get a deeper understanding of the mysteries that underpin and define many aspects of the world, and of the Paravians which play such a vital role in Athera's fate. By the end of Destiny's Conflict, the stage shall be fully set for Arc V.
Arc V is one volume, 'Song of the Mysteries'.
'Will the final peace bring ruin, or triumph...?'
Arc V hits the ground running and does not stop until the very end. Here the struggle opens up to 'Epoch' level, unveling the full role of the Elder Powers in the series, and finally throwing back the veil on events thousands of years back in Athera's past as well.
Here is the full play, carrying everything forward on every level and serving as the thrilling climax for the entirety of the Wars of Light and Shadow, and denoueing events from all the previous volumes of the series in one thrilling, satisfying conclusion.
Each arc, expect the characters to undergo a stage of development and reach a conclusive point or crisis in their lives, after which they change - and the next arc will reflect that impact and introduce another phase, until events impact them again at the arc finale and they evolve yet again.
Nothing is window dressing; nothing shown is for no purpose. All will get built on, later - even if at first, where the story is 'steering you' may not be apparent, it will be/and likely not in the direction you think it was heading.
'What is any war, after all, but the abject surrender of hope?'
If you have already read Steven Erikson's 'Malazan Book of the Fallen' series and would like to know how it compares and contrasts with the Wars of Light and Shadow, here is a primer given Janny Wurts herself:
Neither one of these is a 'simple' series, so this is not a 'simple' question, but I will try to make the answer as clear as possible - inviting readers (also) who've read both to chime in if they wish to add a comment from their point of view.
The obvious differences: Malazan's world was developed by gamers/more than one mind, and game campaigns that developed it were done at 'different' time periods with various characters at 'different' levels of power.
Athera was never a gamer's world, it was never a 'mass mind' creatiion: only me/over years and decades of development.
Therefore: expect there will not be this immense/sprawl across epochs and civilizations that you find in Malazan; nor will there be a gigantic cast of characters....Light and Shadows will be 'narrower' due to the world and its origins having Restrictions that you cannot (at first) grasp...they are all there for 'reasons' and those reasons will unveil, often dramatically. Where Malazan throws you in, head first/with Light and Shadows, you will learn the 'scape and scope by EVENTS/as the characters learn and develop and realize. So the story will not sprawl or widen across levels, but Spiral over the layers and levels - your perception of what you see will heighten and deepen - HUGE.
The interlocking perception of WHAT you see, the unveiling of the scope and depth and the re-ordering of your plot priorities - the two series will be similar in complexity and in parsing moral gray areas.
Where Erikson plainly states (if you read his interviews or listen to his panels) he is writing about CATHARSIS - and his readers note that he is writing about COMPASSION in Malazen....
Light and Shadows will have Catharsis and it IS indeed about Compassion and Empathy vs Justice and Logic (the POV that parses a single vantage vs ruling from the vantage of 'the many' - it will revise what this means, over and over again. The characters in Malazan who are broken due to their warfaring past - in Light and Shadows you will SEE the breaking and the mending and the rebuild.
Where Malazan looks broadscope at WAand huge conflict, and often pulp views of strange beings and doings and elder powers - Light and Shadows will take you there inside the characters' experience - it IS that experience, but a lot more character driven, a lot more into the experiential heads of those involved.
Oh, there are 'elder powers' and HUGE history at stake - but this will unwind a LOT more carefully - you won't see the truly powerful or the truly ancient ramificaitons until they are ready to unveil THEMSELVES - or - your reader comprehension through the characters' eyes are ready to SEE them. And your own assumptions as a reader will blind you, just as much as your characters' assumptions do.
So the Action in Light and Shadows takes longer to deliver (every single book is explosive at the FINISH/with convergency starting at halfway through each volume and arc) the set up to that action is more intricately laid down.
Where Malazan, you don't KNOW - in Light and Shadows it's in plain sight but between the lines.
Ursula LeGuin once laid down a 'challenge' to authors to come up with 'alternate systems' to our own here on earth. Light and Shadows picks up that gauntlet - but with a delicacy that allows you to KEEP your prejudices if you absolutely do not want to be moved...those who persist in 'knowing' what they are 'seeing' or those who skim past will certainly miss the experiential development of a lot of very complex ideas that are tackled layer by layer, through the characters' eyes.
Both series deal with the ruin and impact of violence used in conflict - and point to the futility of that solution - but they handle it very differently.
The 'philosophical' moments are not going to be told or stated straight up in the narrative as they are in Malazan, but will emerge or be shown in character interactions and dialogue.
The narrative (as opposed to character insight) in Light and Shadows will always tell you straight, always be 'accurate;' but you may (read definitely) not (yet) have the vantage to SEE the depths and the heights shown....where the character vantage will most always be wrong, and your reader vantage, too, get ready for the moment of denouement where all will 'click' into place, revealing an entirely different scenario.
One last contrast: Malazan's tone is overall pretty 'dark'. Light and Shadows is both Light and Dark - it will not pull punches at the harsh moments, but equally, there will be a balance and a triumph - it is full spectrum/both ends pushed to the max/No punches pulled.
Flexibility of your own view must be fluid; because the assumptions are gonna get busted, sometimes with spectacular twists. Attention to detail and thinking about what you see will matter a lot. If you miss it, don't worry (no need to be obsessive)- the ongoing story will correct your vantage as you go.
One more important point to note:
This series WILL NOT TELL YOU THE SYSTEM(S) OF RULE OR OF MAGIC - it will not 'explain' the rules and laws - it will SHOW THEM. So if the character whose POV you are sharing doesn't KNOW, then, you won't. If the character observing is not only ignorant, but NOT OBSERVANT, what you will 'see' will be their blind spot. The NARRATIVE (not character introspection or dialogue) will be accurate - but it will NEVER spell it out. You will have to be doubly OBSERVANT yourself, as reader, to pick up what the character is missing. The clues and hints in plain sight will be subtle, because: your own assumptions (as a reader of fantasy) will also trip you...until the 'unveiling' moments of character or narrative experience that shove that shift into the forefront of action and you cannot possibly ignore it.
The same goes for the 'philosophy' in the book....it will NOT BE TOLD TO YOU as in 'life is this' as so many male written novels like to do - it will be twined into the DIALOGUE or the CHARACTERS' experience very tightly - again in plain sight, but the NARRATIVE voice will not TELL YOU what to think. The experience will. Look for the 'quotable quotes' in the dialogue and character interactions - particularly where the power interface between the characters is NOT EQUAL.
To conclude this long post, here's another quote by the author, Janny Wurts.
'Each who reads must weight the good and the evil. Let the Wars of Light and Shadow spark thought, and ignite your imagination.'

2024.06.07 19:03 sfi-fan-joe May Bingo Reading and Reviews

My goal this year is to complete 7 cards this year, with a few themed cards being Hard Mode, Progression Fantasy, Self-Published, New-To-Me Authors and Award Winning Books/Series cards. Here is my April reading, a total of 17 books, with corresponding bingo categories with HM = hard mode:
Dread Knight (Dread Knight #1) - Sarah Hawke - A fun, entertaining high fantasy read. Nothing thought provoking but a good popcorn read. Loved the battles and the bit of worldbuilding was good with magic having corrupted the world, leaving a large population of Riven/demons for the remaining forces of humanity to deal with. 3.5/5. First in a Series, Criminals, Prologue & Epilogue, Self-Published, Romantasy, Published in 2024, Survival (HM), Judge a Book By Its Cover (HM)
The Abjurer (Journals of Evander Tailor #3) - Tobias Begley - Cozy, slice-of-lice progression fantasy in a magical school setting. The magic is super in-depth and thought-out, which helps to immerse you into the world. The story was fairly fast-paced and the action was well done and entertaining. 4.5/5. Self-Published, Romantasy (HM), Multi-POV, Published in 2024, Character With a Disability (HM)
Red Right Hand (The Murder of Crows #2) - Chris Tullbane - The sequel to See These Bones and this was just as good, if not better. Absolutely loving this trilogy and can't wait to see how it ends. Feels like a perfect mash-up of a darker version of Super-Powereds with the world/setting of The Perfect Run. It's a slow burn in regards to power development, but the story itself is paced perfectly. 5/5. Alliterative Title, Dreams, Prologue & Epilogue, Self Published, Survivor (HM)
One Tin Soldier (The Murder of Crows #3) - Chris Tullbane - Amazing final book in this trilogy, and I was so happy to hear that the author plans on continuing the universe. It was great seeing Damian’s powers grow, as it made for some amazing fight scenes as he travelled the Badlands with some regular people as well as Silk. It made it into a bit of a western, which worked for this world. 5/5. Dreams, Prologue & Epilogue (HM), Self Published, Survivor (HM)
The Dead Zone - Stephen King - I felt this was a mixed bag. Overall solid writing, as all King books are, but this one didn't quite have the payoff. The main murder-mystery was wrapped up suddenly and was a let down. And though I was less interested in the politician subplot, it had the much better conclusion. 3.5/5. Dreams, Prologue & Epilogue, Multi-POV (HM), Set in a Small Town (HM)
The Emissary Bard (World of Chains #3) - Lars Machmuller - Solid sequel. Was feeling a little redundant at first but once the mission to visit the harpy village started, the story really picked up. Kept expanding on the secondary characters but not much more worldbuilding, which is fine. More of a slow-building story, giving us time with the characters and expansion of the powers. 3.5/5. Criminal, Bard (HM), Self Published, Set in a Small Town
A Fracture in the Qwisdeep (Jekua #2) - Travis M. Riddle - Reading this book/series, not only is it Pokemon-inspired, but it seems like Pokemon fan-fiction, with just the names changed. Even the interactions with other trainers (Summoners) seems like legit conversations from the games / show. Hell, there's even Team Rocket (Facet) which are causing trouble. That's not a knock as I found the world to be vibrant and exotic, plus it’s a real easy read and it’s just a fun adventure. The characters, even minor ones, are unique. 3.5. Self Published, Eldritch Creature (HM), Reference Material
An Inheritance of Magic (Inheritance of Magic #1) - Benedict Jacka - I have mixed feelings about this book, as there were elements I really liked, but others I found only okay. Hence the 3-star rating for this urban fantasy with elements of progression fantasy book which centers on the protagonist’s efforts to learn more about magic and get more skilled.
For a start, I liked the easy but well written style. There was a lot of info-dumping, and the author had to include a lot of elements that will only serve the story in books to come, not necessarily in this one. I also liked the hard magic system, which is less often in an urban fantasy setting.
However, for much of the book, which was short, nothing felt like it happened. The MC would go well hunting, which was uninteresting, or made sigils, which also wasn't that interesting. It's not a bad book by any stretch, but it's just not for me. 3/5. First in a Series, Dark Academia, Reference Material
Bones of the Past (Villain’s Code #2) - Drew Hayes - Another 5-star book from Drew Hayes. This author is just so damn good. Though I liked the first book, Forging Hephaestus slightly better, this is still an amazing book and sequel to it. Had many different story lines but all were woven together nicely. Had multiple big fights, some with villains-on-villains, villains versus heroes and even aliens. As good as the action was, the way Hayes makes us care about the characters is simply top notch. 5/5. Criminals, Prologue & Epilogue (HM), Self Published, Multi-POV
The Library of the Dead (Edinburgh Nights) - T.L. Hucha - This one wasn't for me. Urban YA fantasy with a street-wise protagonist who communes with ghosts. Gets drawn into a mystery. Wasn't a huge fan of the writing style. Not a bad book, just didn't work for me. 2.5/5. First in a Series, Alliterative Title, PoC Author
Foundation (Foundation #1) - Isaac Asimov - Really interesting concept, of a science-based settlement being created at the edge of the universe to escape the collapse of the Empire that is predicted to arrive. I thought the book lost steam by the end, but enjoyed the story on the whole. 3/5. First in a Series (HM), Multi-POV (HM), Space Opera
All the Skills 3 (All the Skills #3) - Honour Rae - I'll preface that I really do enjoy deck-building LitRPGs, but I really enjoyed this. I'm finding that each book is getting stronger and stronger as well. I love the magic system, and the budding relationship between Arthur and his dragon. And I like the direction the story is going. 4/5. Under the Surface (HM), Prologue & Epilogue, Self-Published, Published in 2024
Tree of Aeon (Tree of Aeon #1) - SpaizZzer - This book was good, just not for me. I liked the potential of it, and being so different (reincarnated as a tree) but several things didn't click for me. I initially thought the MC would grow into an underdog hero since he was spurned of that option initially, instead he becomes more-or-less an empathic tyrant. And everything that kinda...appears. When he needs a new skill, it just appears as a menu choice. He also barely explores/plays with/develops his skills, and forgets about them at times as well. 2.5/5. First in a Series (HM), Dreams, Self Published, POC Author
Iron Kissed (Mercy Thompson #3) - Patricia Briggs - Fun, short murder-mystery in an urban-paranormal fantasy setting. I really like Mercy as a character and I'm curious as to where they take this next. 3.5/5. Romantasy
Voice of Mars (Starship’s Mage) - Glynn Stewart - It was good but with each volume, I'm realizing it's not for me. Definitely more political SFF than sword-and-laser, which I was hoping for. This book also had a mystery that was interesting at first but grew rather convoluted. Sadly I don't think I'll continue the series. 2.5/5. Prologue & Epilogue, Self-Published, Space Opera
The Antventure Begins (Chrysalis #1) - RinoZ - A little different of a reincarnated LitRPG because the MC comes back as an ant, instead of a human. Took a little bit of time to get used to the humour, which was a little over-the-top at times, but the MC is super competent, which was a breath of fresh air. The in-game mechanics are pretty interesting, and I cant wait to find out what happens next. 4.5/5. First in a Series (HM), Under the Surface (HM), Entitled Animal, Self Published, Multi-POV (HM), Survival (HM), Eldritch Creatures (HM)
Mayor of Noobtown (Noobtown #1) - Ryan Rimmel - A good reincarnated LitRPG book. Started off a little rough but improved throughout. I love a town/empire building book, and though this series will get there, this book didn't have any of that. Instead, it was the MC figuring out the game mechanics (including his "broken" trait that allows him to learn any skill/class if exposed to it) and clearing out the "Noobtown" of goblins. I wish the MC was smarter, but by the end he was learning to use the "unbroken" status better. 3/5. First in a Series (HM), Self Published, Survival (HM), Set in a Small Town (HM)
