2024.05.15 01:13 vrhelmutt My thoughts on pizzagate

Conspiracy theories involving “elite” pedophile rings have recently been dominating social media in a disorienting frenzy. They have been around for some time but in this century rose back to popularity during the 2016 Election cycle. This crop, at least, took root with what became known as “Pizzagate.” Promoters of that conspiracy theory in 2016 used social media platforms to make unfounded but viral allegations that Hillary Clinton and other prominent Democrats were running a pedophile ring out of the basement of a pizzeria even though that restaurant had no basement, or any ties to known politicians other than the typical flesh pressing (Phrasing I know) moments fit for a picture hung on the wall. Since then, the dark theme of Pizzagate has found new life with permutations forming part of the #Qanon conspiracy theory, incorporated under the umbrella term “pedogate.” The gist of the #pedogate conspiracy theory is that global elites (politicians, celebrities, and wealthy businesspersons) are covertly involved in a far-reaching ring that uses young children for sexual purposes. “What most of these conspiracy theories involve in one way or another is laying accusations of pedophilia or involvement in pedophile rings at the feet of people that they despise or hate, and during the 16’ election cycle, Democrats were a wide target for an opposing political movement that had hijacked the rival Republican party. Pizzagate originated with the “alt right” and “alt lite,” far right extremists who range from outright white supremacists to those who publicly shun racists but otherwise fall in step with their belief systems. Pizzagate jumped from the fringes to the mainstream because as it denigrated Hillary Clinton, it sucked in supporters of then-candidate Donald Trump. After the election all mention of pedogate seemed to be put on a simmer while other National outrages boiled over (#Covid #RussiaGate #BLM) and just like clockwork (heading into our next election cycle has been turned back up. The pedogate conspiracy and all associated stories employ a centuries-old tactic: playing on deep-seated human anxieties by conjuring images of imperiled children, the purest and defenseless victim of any manner of injustice. An example in the modern era of weaponized conspiracy was the satanic panic of the 1980s, in which a wave of hysteria over alleged child molestation at daycare centers swept the nation. But while that phenomenon was a moral panic attributable, at least in part, to social anxiety over white middle class women entering the work force en masse for the first time and entrusting their children to others, the current conspiracy theories about pedophile rings equate to similar propaganda. They carry a danger for stirring up violence. If you want to elicit violent action the way to do it is through hate and fear. Once you target and label a population as pedophiles, you can do anything you like to that population with full excuse being given to the myth you’ve wrapped around it. That’s not to say fears of child abuse or sex trafficking are unfounded. There are many as pedophilia has ancient roots and in many cases was encourage by many world cultures and religions a lot later into Civilization than we’d like to admit. The International Labor Organization reports that 25 percent of the world’s 40.3 million victims of human trafficking are children. The most vulnerable, according to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, are migrants, runaways, the homeless, and youngsters who have been victims of violence. Despite their obsession over the topic, conspiracy followers aren’t worked up about those children who are in true harm’s way. In the world of propaganda, it’s never about real children. Instead, it’s about what children represent. The children imperiled by conspiracy theories, in other words, are only metaphors. Children carry a vast amount of weight in any society, but especially modern ones when they’re expected to survive past the age of five. It wasn’t as intense before the 18th century when child mortality rates were really high. They represent the future, and all that is beautiful and decent and honest in a society, because they are innocent. For most people also, the meaning of their existence is rooted in their children. Children are eschatological, they represent death for us, and what is coming behind us after we are gone. They also represent the threat of loss, if they disappear, if they die, that is the death of society. That’s why they became so crucial and central to Cold War propaganda. The real terror of the nuclear holocaust would be the death of the children, because that’s the death of everyone. A recent example of this is in a recent police investigation into conspiracy claims of PizzaGate style accusation of Portland’s Voodoo Doughnuts. Detectives attempted to contact the person accusing Voodoo Doughnuts on social media of running a pedophile ring. The accuser did not cooperate with investigators and it’s been documented in other coverage online that they had become agitated and accused the Police with complicity when tracked down in person, even though they were attempting to investigate. The pendulum of conspiracy theories about systematic child abuse has swung back and forth for centuries. Examples such as blood libel, when Jewish communities were attacked over false allegations of murdering and consuming Christian children in the Middle Ages. In Europe, During the Thirty Years War, entire villages were put to the sword because it was believed they were abusing children of the other religions. One characteristic that helps Pizzagate-style conspiracy theories gain popularity is that they function like a puzzle game and give its audience a large level of involvement through social media. A lot of conspiracy theories are oracular, where the information comes from one source an oracle. Then there are others where there are a few people who promote the notions, almost like gurus or a conspiracy priesthood. But Pizzagate, it’s more of what one would call a participatory conspiracy theory. Participatory conspiracy theories lay out a scenario or situation and then they ask their audience, ‘what more can you find out about this, what more can you add?’ It turns the audience into willing participants, some knowing they are creating a destructive madlib and other (potential real victims) caking on mystical distraction to issues that have been unreported or scars that have not bee properly treated. The thing about participatory conspiracy theories is it can really create a devoted following because it gives people something to do, it makes them feel they can solve the whole thing or uncover new aspects to it. Once you get that energy going it’s almost self-sustaining. Followers of the Qanon conspiracy theory, call themselves “bakers” because their protagonist “Q” pops up on Internet message boards and leaves “crumbs” (i.e., clues), and they are tasked with picking up the crumbs in order to solve the puzzle. (“Q” is supposed to reference the character’s government security clearance level).
#Q followers believe an even more incoherent version of Pizzagate. This is largely a right-wing fantasy that originated in a series of incoherent posts on #4chan in 2017 by someone calling themselves #QAnon. Following on the heels of similar idiocy such as Pizzagate, it advances a fantastic web of deceit that wraps up Trumpism, deep state fearmongering, evil, satanic pedophilia rings controlled by the Democratic Party, investigations into Russian meddling in the 2016 US election, the Las Vegas shooting, and New World Order paranoia into a package easily and wholeheartedly promoted by internet cesspools and far-right personalities such as Alex Jones. The premise is that President Trump is secretly working to take down a global ring of elite, cannibalistic, satanic pedophiles. And the investigation into Russian meddling into the 2016 election, led by former FBI director Robert Mueller, is actually an investigation into the so-called “deep state”, where a cabal of evil, globalists, including Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, are responsible for everything from a global pedophile ring to the mass shooting in Las Vegas in 2017. According to the enlightened, when Trump awkwardly took a drink from a bottle of Fiji water at a press conference in November 2017, it wasn’t because he was thirsty; it was actually a secret signal to those in the know that the annihilation of deep state pedophiles had begun (or was about to begin). Because as everyone knows, Fiji is a hot spot for child trafficking. ( I could go on and on with this poorly thought-out shit, I will spare you ) The role the Internet and social media play in helping to spread such insanity can’t be underestimated. Just a few decades earlier, conspiracy theorists would identify each other using letters to the editor printed in newspapers and magazines. It was a lot harder to identify your fellow conspiracy theorists. You would have to physically meet to swap your stories or send letters or call. They would set up these groups that would communicate by newsletter. They would meet in a physical space, like someone’s living room. I personally witnessed people from my childhood, dutifully photocopying newsletters they had received in the mail to give to others (Primarily at my #JW congregation, how ironic). Now obviously it can go much more quickly, because you can identity people immediately. You can quickly share ideas and the data you’ve collected. The Internet allows such people to exist in bubbles where they rarely have their beliefs challenged. The extraordinarily polarized society we’re in right now has made people less willing to seek out other view points. Because of the internet you have less chance of doing this. There’s very little incentive to look outside one’s own bubble once they have become invested in a conspiracy theory. Once you start to act out on those behaviors you are forced to double down by repeating the act to prove it was a just act. Eventually you get caught up in a movement that totally defines your conscious and you can’t get out of it. The second you step out of that world view your actions go back to being reprehensible. Now the question becomes, “What’s the harm? If it sheds light on child abuse, then isn’t it still productive?” The answer in this case is a resounding NO. In my opinion and PAINFUL experience, the root cause and sustaining factors of institutionalized child sex abuse are all things that would counter your typical Conspiracy Nut’s world view, thus causing a complete blackout to the problems. The entity taking part in the harming of children on a local and tangible level aren’t some suit and tie wearing global elitist. It’s a guidance counselor, youth pastor, unvetted young substitute teacher, aunt/uncle/cousin/neighbor. It’s anyone who has been given routine private access to a child’s mind and body because of the social conventions that have been protected for generations by our relatives whether they themselves are guilty of abuse or not. In all the Qanon madness I also kept very close tabs on the pending prosecution of the Boy scouts of America and never saw any widely shared memes about their involvement in the abuse syndicate. Why is this? How is this so? Aren’t these people watching the news, seeing the court records and hearing the individual cases being brought against Scout Leaders (SOME OF WHO RAN THEIR OWN NETWORKS!!)? When I would find mention of accusation it was met with the ever scarce “skepticism” because if the media is covering it, it must be a plot to destroy the organization. There are now non-for profit organizations setting up victim funds and protections for people to come out with their stories and somehow THIS is the fake ruse. Some that know me know that I was a Jehovah’s Witness as a youth/teen/young adult. That chapter of my life could fill many chapters and the research on the organization, the real true black and white history of the religion would honestly surprise you. I saw what I now know was abuse, I personally experienced abuse in many forms. The perpetrators involved are either still Witnesses or are dead or have moved “away from the organization”. But one thing that was left intact in each situation was the secret that they prey on children. The parents, these organizations and the collective promise to keep up appearances are directly to blame for the suffering untold thousands, millions of children and broken adults. All for what? Pride and Vanity and a commitment to all involved to protect them from the “mean old world” despite allowing predators to eat their children from within. Being a #JW was a very interesting experience. It provides a very efficient form of insulation from outside society and allows people involved to view the chaos from afar. There is this persistent (albeit false) sense of shared peace that members have. It’s as though for three days a week you go to this meeting where no matter what, everyone has a smile and feels about things EXACTLY how you do. There is no cursing, there are no politics, there surely isn’t any destructive influences that would tarnish your chances of salvation. For a parent this is a refuge when raising a child in a world that is dangerously unpredictable. A Child that you are unable (or unwilling) to teach coping skills to get along by societal standards, A child you want to protect by hiding. This is problem #1. As an adult the congregation presents an avenue for which you can act and behave in a way that allows you to reconcile your past, a way to have less of those nights awake because you think about past wrongs you’ve committed against people. It’s the proverbial band-aid for a guilty, bruised, destroyed conscious of any size. Coming into the organization takes nothing more than the desire to change, publicly declaring your willingness to hand over your life to God (The organization). Bam, You’re in! No credit check, no background check. This is problem #2. A JW is taught that “every facet is an asset” (Ministerial Servants know what I’m talking about). What this means is that every facet of your life is an asset to the organization to spread its word. If the world see’s their product’s application into your life and thereby how much better it is than a normal person’s, then they’ve made an “Effective Witness” to the world. This causes Witnesses of any age to allow almost every facet of their life to be a tool by the organization. For a parent this includes their children. This is problem #3 When you get a culture that insulates itself from the real world, that allows you to enter without any coherent vetting, give access to children whose parents feel obligated to present as a “witness” to the lifestyle. You get a twisted corridor in which victims can get lost for a lifetime and predators can hide in plain sight. For any proponents of the “Save-The-Children” movement to not take a step back and really analyze their local community and lifestyle through these lenses only illustrates that child abuse is being weaponized politically at the expense of others whom you aren’t willing to save because it would look bad for ‘your side’. If you truly care, you wouldn’t be sharing email forwards about what evil unverified unmentionable thing you read some celebrity or politician did. Instead, you’d be drawing back on your experiences as a child. Even if nothing happened directly to you, I’m sure you know some one that had an experience that forever harmed their life. Who did it? Was there a pattern or social condition that allowed for this as was laid out in the JW example? How could it have been avoided? Would you have stopped it if you saw the signs? Are you willing to stop it in the future, knowing what you know now? If you can answer any of those questions with a yes, then you have all you need to WRITE your own material to reach real victims and their families. Does your action cause problems for your ‘side’? It shouldn’t matter and you know that. If it does make a difference to you then you are no better than the shadowy pedophilic cabal that you are so obsessed with.

2024.05.14 23:15 ChewBaka12 What idea’s and concepts would you consider severely underused

I’ll start: protagonist’s with dwarfism.
Like I’ve seen a lot of short protagonists, but it’s always purely cosmetic, mostly to have that tall handsome guy/short introvert girl dynamic, and never shorter than 4’10. Which is still short, but vertically challenged folk average at about 4’0 feet tall. Never have I seen a fic that actually has a protagonists height truly be relevant.
I don’t count fandoms where fantasy dwarves are prominent and have their own societies. Yes they are dwarves but they are all regular size for their environment. Like I said in my first sentence, it’s almost purely cosmetic and rarely plot relevant, making all dwarves in the setting human sized wouldn’t change a thing aside from how you picture them. Because they are all short, they can’t be considered truly short because they are average relative to the setting, if that makes sense.

2024.05.14 23:09 eva_mango WIBTAH for causing my best friend to loose her kid care?

First of all sorry for my English, it’s not my primary language.
My (29F) best friend (31F) for more then 10 years father(who is a retired contractor) did my entire apartment for free labor.
I only heard good think about is work from his daughter all our life. But as you can expect it did NOT go well for me… Other then the consistent belittling of my opinion over the make over, the main problem is that NOTHING end up good (not even great just good), the tiles aren’t leveled causing mini-steps on the floor, the doors cut uneven, huge and put inside out, the paint with so many brush marks and drop, electricity switches put on a 90°, and the biggest problem (and danger ⚠️) of it all : the electrical wired naked in the cardboard baseboard wich isn’t up to norms and so will overturn my house insurance in case of trouble.
I tried to talk to him but he basically told me norms are bulshit and I’m a brat.
I threatened to put him to court for the price it will cost me to repair at least the electricity who is dangerous, but he’s so cocky he doesn’t care. And there come the plot twist: he’s a sketchy entreprenor who put all his companys on my friend name so she is legally responsible of everything. He bought materials for my house with pro discount on old company (which is illegal here), never had clean tax declaration and a lot of other weird shit. So if I press charges it will probably put my friend in some DEEEEEEEEEP legal mess and be use by her ex to ask for full care of the child. She agree her father messed up, it’s so bad we wonder if he secretly hate me or « just » loosing his mind, especially since right after all this he start having some kind of strokes. I know he did me a huge favor working for free but his mess will cost me more then 40k€ to fix it. It’s not just a little accident, it’s really a messed up on his part and to keep insulting me over just apologizing and admitting his mistakes really pisse me off. He even won’t listen to his daughter who is completely unpowered in front of him.
So Reddit WIBTAH for pressing charges?
TLTR : my best friend sketchy father messed my appartement make over, won’t admit it and drag his daughter in his legal issues blocking me from pressing charges without get her in it too.
Too be fair I know I would be an asshole but the question is more justified AH or pure evil AH? I’m too deep in this to see full picture I think so please be kind I’m already a mess haha

2024.05.14 22:46 GamingHearts1 Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture- 30 Years Later

Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture- 30 Years Later
https://preview.redd.it/ignz3fi3fg0d1.jpg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5ac6aa56b3a4eb3e52878def2c9768cade44d0bf
The Fatal Fury series has been around since ’91 and its considered to be one of the most underrated fighting franchises within video game history. Fatal Fury series consisted of numerous games that were released throughout the 90’s when the fighting genre of gaming was still very popular. Despite, not reaching the same level of popularity as Capcom’s Street Fighter II series SNK’s Fatal Fury franchise had a strong enough fanbase to get its own movie back in 1994. Its hard to believe that Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture came out three decades ago but then again the animation and character art says otherwise. Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture was a film that lasted roughly over an hour and thirty minutes and focused on some of the main characters within the franchises. The plot for the Fatal Fury movie focused on Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard and Mai Shiranui who attempts to prevent the main villain Laocorn Gaudeamus from collecting the six shards of the Armor of Mars. The Bogard Brothers along with Shiranui and Sulia the sister of Laocorn attempt to do everything possible to stop him from gaining incredible power. The Fatal Fury: Motion Picture was one that had a decent story, good voice actors and it was fast paced because the movie did not drag at all.
It was a bit strange to have a non video game character like Laocorn Gaudeamus as they main villain and makes you wonder if the Fatal Fury movie from ’94 was canon or not. While other villainous characters like Geese Howard and Laurence Blood were present in the Fatal Fury movie it was a bit surprising that neither one of them were the main antagonist. The Fatal Fury: Motion Picture is one that most likely got over shadowed during the mid 90’s especially considering the fact that ’94 was a big year for movie releases. Along with the Fatal Fury: Motion Picture we got to see the releases of the Street Fighter II: Animated series along with the live-action Street Fighter film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. It should also be noted that Samurai Shodown received its own film adaptation back in ’94 and the video game series was starting to become popular in arcade centers during the mid 90’s.
While the Fatal Fury: Motion Picture solid the series itself began to decline in popularity towards the end of the 90’s decade due to more competition within the fighting genre of gaming. It should also be noted that ’94 was the year where the King of Fighters series began. By 1994, SNK had decided to take key characters from the Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting series to create a brand new fighting series which is still going on today. Even though, the Fatal Fury series has been dead for more than two decades it seems like SNK is finally ready to release a brand new installment within the in early 2025. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will most likely bring back lapsed fans of the series along with those who still love the KOF series after all of these years. The Fatal Fury series is one that definitely deserved more movies than it got during the 90’s and hopeful its something that SNK will consider after the release of “City of the Wolves” in 2025.

2024.05.14 20:32 AegisPlays314 The Actual Evidence That Clutch Isn't Real

The Actual Evidence That Clutch Isn't Real
Everybody knows that the entire baseball analytics crowd dismisses "clutch" as being an essentially fake phenomenon, which I think has harmed the public perception of analytics among people, since we're naturally inclined to think that some people rise to the occasion and some don't. I thought I'd show the actual evidence analysts use to dismiss clutch, since that might be more convincing than being bludgeoned over the head with "it's just luck" over and over again.
The way we measure clutch is pretty simple. We look at a player's win probability added based on the context of the actual game and compare it to a player's win probability added, but adjusted to make context irrelevant. If the first number is bigger, they rise to the occasion. If the second number is bigger, the lights are too bright for them. If being clutch is a skill, then some players should be able to repeatedly rise to the occasion and other players should repeatedly falter in big moments.
So here's a graph of exactly that: a plot of every player's two-season clutch from 1974 to 2017. The x-axis shows how clutch they were in a season, and the y-axis shows how clutch they were the next season.
blob.jpg
The correlation coefficient on this graph is 0.00. Statistically, there is a literal 0% chance that being clutch one year means you're more likely to be clutch the next year. If being clutch year after year is a skill, it's not one that anybody has essentially ever demonstrated in the history of baseball.
But what about being clutch within a given season? Maybe you can be clutch one year and then forget how over the winter. Here's a graph of first-half to second-half clutch for every season from 1974-2017:
blob_2.jpg
Also a 0% chance of significance. You can't be clutch in the first half and expect to be clutch in the second half too. If you have a wildly clutch first half of the year, you're literally just as likely to be wildly unclutch in the second half as you are to be wildly clutch again. But, of course, no matter how clutch you've been over any amount of time, you can expect to be just about average at it going forward. Because it's just luck, and no matter how lucky or unlucky you've been, you'll, on average, have average luck for the rest of your life.
I hope the graphs are more convincing than just being told clutch doesn't exist. They certainly paint a vivid picture.

Andrews crafts a delightful tale filled with romance, humor, and Southern charm. The coastal setting provides a picturesque backdrop for the characters' adventures and struggles. The author's descriptive prose brings Belle Isle to life, making it feel like a character in its own right.
One of the novel's strengths lies in its well-developed characters. Annajane is a relatable protagonist with depth and vulnerability, and her interactions with the supporting cast are authentic and engaging. Mason is portrayed as a flawed yet charismatic figure, adding complexity to the story's dynamics.
While "Summers at the Saint" offers an enjoyable escape into the world of small-town drama, some readers may find the plot predictable or the pacing slow at times. However, fans of Mary Kay Andrews' signature blend of romance and Southern storytelling are likely to appreciate this charming novel.
Overall, "Summers at the Saint" is a delightful summer read that transports readers to a sun-soaked coastal town filled with love, laughter, and unexpected twists. Andrews' skillful storytelling and vivid imagery make it a worthy addition to her body of work.

2024.05.14 20:20 Kirati_Warrior316 So someone made a post about Nepal, here's my reply.

Namaskar.
This post is a reply to the post by u/Effective-Neat-7251. I agree pal, there's a lot of disinformation on the net so just chill and let me clarify your doubts and concerns.
The Reply:
This is one of those dumb posts on Nepal which makes me realise again and again the fact why ground knowledge is so fkin important. No offence to you OP, you are not alone and this post isn't the last of it's kind.
Nepal rushes headfirst into this whole democracy gig without really thinking it through. They slap together a constitution like it's some kind of last-minute homework assignment and expect everything to magically fall into place. Well, surprise, surprise, it doesn't work like that! You can't just declare yourself a democratic republic and expect everything to be sunshine and rainbows.
It was a long, brutal civil war spanning two decades of fighting, which only ended after the abdication of King Gyanendra who was crowned as King of Nepal after the very unfortunate incident of the "Royal Massacre", in which most members of the Nepali Royal family were murdered, including the former King Dipendra and the newly crowned Birendra. To this day, leaders of the Nepali Congress and maoist are seen as the ones who plotted the massacre.
The decision of turning into a republic was not of the people, it was infact forced upon the people.
And then there's the whole identity crisis. Nepal can't seem to make up its mind whether it wants to be secular or Hindu. It's like watching a kid trying to choose between two flavors of ice cream and ending up with a melted mess. Make up your mind already! And don't even get me started on the monarchy nonsense. Yeah, let's bring back the kings and queens because that worked out so well in the past, right?
I'm going to say this very clearly. Nepal is a Hindu country through and through. You can watch documentaries about the Nepali civil war, you'll find that so called Maoists prayed to Shiva and local Gods before going to battles.
Heck, the leader of Maoists, the so called the "leader of the revolution" and the current PM of Nepal is a Brahmin and goes to Temple in full Bhagwadhari saffron clothes and posts pictures of himself celebrating dashain (Durga Puja) with red Tilak on his forehead.
These are your so called communists.
But wait, it gets even better. China swoops in like some smooth-talking charmer, waving around its Belt and Road Initiative like it's the answer to all of Nepal's problems. And Nepal? Well, they're eating it up like candy on Halloween. Meanwhile, India's standing on the sidelines, twiddling its thumbs and watching its neighbor slip further and further away.
The important Araniko Highway was built by China, several bridges are built by Japan and Korea, the current ring road is being built by Chinese money, trains have returned to Nepal through India. Fk it there are even brigdes in Nepal to this day which were made through Soviet help.
Nepalis don't give a damn where the money is coming from. As long it's being put to good use and for the betterment of it's citizens, I don't think anyone should be bothered.
I don't even get the idea of why Indians fear Chinese presence is Nepal, which is but a grain of sand compared to Indian presence. We have pegged currency with India, an open border which allows for easy travel, billions of dollars of grants are given to Nepal every year by India, India is also Nepal's biggest trading partner.
Fk it we also have yearly military exercises and not to mention the people, culture, history and religion. WTF does China has over such things? Absolutely nothing. It's ridiculously hilarious to hear such things time and time again.
And speaking of India, what's deal? We are playing it cool like we are too good to get involved in Nepal's mess. Newsflash, We can't just sit back and watch while our neighbour gets cozy with the competition.
Trust me brother, and the people and governments of both countries, if there ever were to be a war between China and India, the most probable outcome is either Nepal remains neutral or joins India. It is more likely of Bhutan and Bangladesh to betray India than Nepal.
All in all, Indians need to chill and stop irritating the only other Hindu country in the world and also it's only real "Friend" in the world.
Again, not an ally of interest or of mutual benefit, but a real friend.
Btw the currency thing is only a move by dumb politicians, currency notes for Nepal in fact gets printed in India, not in Nepal, so you all can see how that goes.
Anyways, have a nice day/night!

2024.05.14 19:30 GABE_EDD [Spoilers] A random guy's opinion on S2E2 Mr. President

Overall, it is the weakest episode by imdb rating, tied with the Brazil troll bottle episode. Part of me is afraid they set the bar so high with the first season that they may struggle to regularly continue to impress the audience and deliver top tier content every single episode. Another part of me hopes that this was made episode 2 so that it wasn't the intro to the season and also wasn't the end of the season, it was placed where it'd have a minimal impact on the overall season. Here's to a great episode 3, Allan's Adventure!

2024.05.14 19:16 True_Spell3438 Partner Search!! (M4A)

Howdy l've been role-playing and writing in general forat least a decade. I am a Male who can play male and female characters. I have original ideas all over and a lot of Fandoms I'm in, which I'Il include below. I'm looking for OCXOC. Every character must be 18+ I have plenty of original characters and ideas along with fandom plots.
For original ideas, i like horror and apocalypse with action and depending romance. I do have a variety. I really like monsters and creepy things from the horror genre like vampires and Tentacles, and l even have my own idea set up in modern times dealing with vampires and hunters and all of that i also enjoy eldritch type horror. I also like old-school slasher films and space sci-fi horror similar to the Alien Franchise.
Now on fandoms! To get some other things down, l only play OC. The anime fandoms i like are Jojo's, Chainsaw Man, Naruto, JJK, Soul Eater, and more. I'm well versed in the Jojo's, Naruto, and JJK, and soul eater fandoms, though it's been a while since ï've stopped keeping up with soul eater. Other fandoms im in include Percy Jackson, Call of Duty, Marvel, and DC.
I tend to use character sheets to describe my character. These are very thorough and usually consist of names, backgrounds, and personalities, along with an in-depth look on appearance. More so on appearances, I don't usually use picture references, but I will if you would like me to. The types of characters I write are the lone wolf type that has some sad past, which leads them to potentially go off the rails and gain a villain arc.
I like all types of tropes, especially enemies to lovers or rivalry. I also really enjoy opposites attracted as a whole from either opposite personality or something else they would be opposites in. Enemies to lovers takes my heart, though. I love seeing the characters go past theurge to ultimately hate each other and/or go past their usual way of disliking the others' lineage or upcoming I also love good written trauma moments. Like character death's, moments of pain and strife only to see the characters to deal and either be consumed or overcome them. I tend to either come up with original ideas for these scenes or use anime scenes as inspiration with narrative tweaks.
REQUIREMENT
I think my two biggest requirements are creativity and good pacing. Like any story, I feel these two things are very necessary to make a good story. Now, by Creativity, I don't mean you need to bring absolute craziness into the story, but abilities, character etc need to have some good genuine thought put into them. Along with that comes good pacing, which means I don't personally care about response length, and mine will vary from scene to scene accordingly.
I'm pretty much done if you have any questions. I'm here, and I'd love to hear back from you in chat the password is your favorite color. Supply it in chat only.

2024.05.14 18:38 deo-dio-dex Hanebado! (Thai Version)

Hanebado! (Thai Version)
Complete Thai translation of Hanebado! - The Badminton Play of Ayano Hanesaki! .... To me it felt more like a characater driven manga told using "badminton" as a plot device, rather being a sports manga about badminton itself. Overall not the best manga I have read, but I did enjoy what it had to offer. The artwork is, at least to me, one of the best I have ever seen. 😬
(PS - I've also posted more manga pictures/short reviews on Instagram, if you are interested. The page name is dsmangareviews. Thank you.)

2024.05.14 18:05 Peachy_Pufferfishie What country should I choose for setting for my novel?

(Hey there. This is the third place I post this, and so far, the previous communities told me, this post doesn't belong in their threads. Hope I'll find help here. Thanks for reading it!)
I'm writing a short novel and I'm having the hardest time finding a country and cities that would be good for setting. It's supposed to be a very light romance novel with a lot of travelling, like half of it is just about the journey to get to the destination and the culture, and I have a picture in mind of some far away, hot, dry, even deserty country, with these beautiful buildings, crowded bazaars and so on. Something Eastern or African. The whole vibe in my head is a bit like watching Aladdin as a kid; just a magical arabian nights-like thing with a few fairytale elements mixed into reality. So far so good, but the plot limits my choices a lot. Here's context:
Female lead is invited to X country by one of her university friends to her wedding. She loves travelling, loves foreign cultures, travelled solo a lot, SO she turns down the help offered by her friends and decides that she will get there by herself, which leads to all kinds of trouble and inconveniences. (She's not entirely stupid - this is not Emily in Paris - but slightly underprepared and also just facing a bunch of trouble because of ahem, me xd.) She gets to city A of this country by plane or something, but then she is kinda forced to take this awfully long and uncomfortable bus ride to get to city B, where her friend is from and the wedding will take place. On this bus ride she meets the male lead, they also end up seated together, and while at first they annoy each other, he practically becomes like a guardian for her, helping and protecting her in many cases. bla bla bla, story goes on.
Problem: I just can't find a good location. One reason, as I explained, I have a concept in my head, which I have to locate somewhere. Rich, colorful culture, intricate architecture, the traditional clothing, the food, a grand festivity around the wedding etc. But two, I have this looong bus ride in the plot. I want it to be a plausible choice, or even, the only choice. So no planes between city A and B? And the landscape, as I mentioned at the beginning.
I'm open to any suggestion, any idea, and especially from people who live in African or Eastern countries. You guys definitely know better as it is your country, your culture. Thank you everyone in advance!

2024.05.14 18:05 Absent-heartless-666 Weekly Young Jump Newcomer Manga Award interview with Ryou Minenami

Found this very interesting interview. Read the tl;dr part if you hate reading longass walls of text.
Note: Page 1 is mostly about Ryou's early days as a struggling novelist, then mangaka assistant and then mangaka and workflows during analog and digital era, the only important part is that Boy's Abyss is... not much of a culmination of her mangaka career, but a work where she can satisfy her ego the most, so i skipped them due to time. Pages 2, 3 and 4 have more info about Abyss.
PART 2: ABOUT BACKGROUND DESCRIPTIONS THAT SUPPORTS THE HUMAN DRAMA
Sauce: https://youngjump.jp/comic_award/interview/2024/05/index2.html
--How do you decide on the locations for your works?
It depends, but I tend to choose places where I have spent time in the past or places that remain in my memory.
--I see. Is there anything important to remember in order to recall the right location for the scene?
You can't open a drawer where there isn't one, so I think it's important to look at various places on a regular basis to increase the number of drawers.
--In "Shounen no Abyss", bridges seem to appear many times in important scenes, including in the first episode. Is this intentional?
Yes, it is. In the first episode, I put the bridge as a kind of borderline between life and death, and I think that the readers came to feel the danger from the bridge. So I may have consciously chosen to use a bridge in decisive scenes. Also, since Reiji is a person who cannot decide for himself whether to live or die, I have him hovering on the bridge, which is between life and death.
(Footnote for a panel from ch. 2: From the second chapter, "Incognito Date". The location of the bridge makes us feel more that Reiji is wandering between life and death.)
--I see. By having them perform on the bridge, you are also conveying the character's condition and humanity.
(Footnote with a page from ch.87: From episode 87, "After the dream". In episode 87, which is set in Tokyo, Reiji's wavering state of mind is expressed in detail using a bridge as a stage.)
--I feel that the timing of the rain is also very well thought out.
Rain is an indispensable element in a gloomy work like this, so I often think about the weather from the plotting stage. Also, when I draw rain, I imagine myself being in the rain. It is cold, my clothes stick to my skin, it gets in my eyes.... I hope that the reader can feel these things.
(Footnote with the page where Akira betrays Shino'oka and gives in to Yuko's temptation in ch102: From Chapter 102, "Amid the Overflowing Water". The texture of the rain effectively shows Nozoe's inclined mind.)
--you have to think about what kind of environment the person is in and what kind of air he/she breathes.
I think it depends on the type of work. For my works, that kind of accumulation is important, but there are also works where other things are important. I think you should think about it according to the kind of work you want to paint.
PART 3: ABOUT THE PICTURE DESIGN THAT SUPPORTS THE WORK
Sauce: https://youngjump.jp/comic_award/interview/2024/05/index3.html
--I assume that it was difficult to learn to draw pictures from a place with no experience in manga.
I learned by trial and error while actually drawing. Even now, I still have a hard time with drawings.
--I see. I (the interviewer) like the pictures in "Shounen no Abyss" very much because they match the content of the story, but it seems to me that you have changed the design of the pictures quite a bit from your past works. How did you decide on the style?
When I started my first serial, "Hoboreru Hanabi", I didn't have time to choose the style yet, so I drew what I could draw at the time. From the next serial, "Himegoto: Juukyuusai no Seifuku," I started to think about "making the eyes a little bigger" or "adding deformation.
--In the next serial work, "Hatsukoi Zombie," you used a much more deformed style of drawing. Why is that?
I think it was because it was serialized in a shounen magazine called "Shounen Sunday. I was conscious of the drawings of Rumiko Takahashi, who I have been a fan of for a long time.
--Did you have the medium of "Weekly Young Jump" in mind when you created the artwork for "Shounen no Abyss"?
If anything, I tried to make the design more in line with the content of the book. Considering the content, for example, it was difficult to use the same body size and eye size as the characters in "Hatsukoi Zombie". However, in the case of "Shounen no Abyss," the reality line differs slightly from character to character, and the way in which deformation is added is different for each character.
--Do you have any advice for new artists who want to improve their drawing?
I think it is important to be aware of the importance of observing what you are drawing. If you just draw from your imagination, you will end up with buildings whose structures you don't know, or wrinkled clothes that don't convey the texture of the wearer's clothing, which is a habit of mine. The result is a worldview that is not convincing. In this age of the Internet and other sources of information, it is important to observe the subject matter carefully and draw it, rather than making rough guesses.
--Do you still search for materials when you draw props, backgrounds, etc.?
Yes, I do. For example, I think about "What kind of room would this person live in?", "What kind of shoes would she wear?", "What kind of car would she drive? I think that the accumulation of such details leads to the sense of daily life that is conveyed in the work.
From episode 19, "seducer". The decor and accessories in Chako's room give us a sense of her life. (there was a page from that chapter i can't put in the post, gomwnnasai, gomennasai, gomennasai....)
End of part 3
PART 4: ABOUT WEEKLY SERIALIZATIONS (this is the important shit)
Sauce: https://youngjump.jp/comic_award/interview/2024/05/index4.html
-I feel that "Shounen no Abyss" has a great live-action feel to it. The characters' actions and the development of the story are unpredictable, and each time I am surprised to see how the story will unfold. Do you have a rough idea of how the story will unfold?
There is a general flow of the story, but basically, I myself draw the story while excitedly thinking, "Well, what will this person say or do on the next page?" In a nutshell, is this a romcom in which Reiji meets a variety of women and decides who he will fall in love (or into the abyss)? It's something like that (T/N: Ryou answered like questioning and answering to herself in the last paragraph of this section)
--I have heard that the starting point of the project for "Shounen no Abyss" was "a story about a double suicide" Do you often draw the story with the theme in mind?
Yes, I decide on the axis to some extent at the beginning. If there is nothing at all, the project itself will not be communicated, and it will be difficult to start a serialization.
--I think that in a weekly serialization, it is necessary to attract the reader intensely in the first episode. What were you conscious of in the first episode of "Shounen no Abyss"?
It's an ensemble piece, so I was conscious of showing all the main characters in the first episode. I also decided to make a memorable appearance of the heroine, Nagi, in the last part of the episode. I also thought about the order of the characters that Reiji meets. First, he meets Shiba-chan, who is outside of his interest, and then he meets and talks with his friend Chako. Then his childhood friend Gen would appear, and things would take a turn for the worse. Then, his family, which is the most painful existence for Reiji, makes an appearance. Then he crosses paths with a mysterious man, and finally a beautiful and bewitching woman appears. In order to make it easier for the reader to enter the world of the work, I made the flow of the story gradually fall into darkness.
--It's like Reiji is going down a flight of stairs one step at a time.
Yes, Nagi is waiting for him when he descends the last step. I changed the background accordingly. When he is with his friend Chako, the sun is out, and when the sun begins to set, he meets his family, and by the time he meets Nagi, it's already nighttime.
--I'm so impressed...! You have built in the backgrounds and elaborated on the details.
(Footnote for 2 pages from the 1st chapter that were shown: Both are from the first episode, "The Boy from That Town". He meets his friend Chako on his way to school in the daylight, but by the time he meets his family, it is dark and shadowy outside. The contrast of the background also depicts Reiji's descent into darkness.)
--What are the most important things outside of your work when working on a weekly series?
Physical strength is important. I also think it is important to keep your mind clear and avoid unnecessary stress. There are many times when I think, "I should have done this better," or "It will be difficult this time because I did that last time," but there is no use in overthinking things, so I try to switch over as soon as possible.
--Finally, do you have any advice for new artists?
I think it is important to have a lot of input while you are young, and to push your luck a little in creating your work.
--Thank you for your valuable talk!
Now, the tl;dr:
-2: Bridges in this manga are used as a gate between life and death.
-1: rain is important in this manga to depict the characters' overflowing emotions.
0: Ryou had to choose carefully the type of atmosphere and air for this manga.
1: Ryou drew Drowning Fireworks on a rush and could define a proper style, she shifts styles according to the tone and magazine shenis doing her works for.
2: She had to study locations and interior plaves to depict characters, their lives and mental states.
3: Boy's Abyss is a romcom on its structure. And the characters were introduced in a way you could instantly get familiarized with from the start, as it's an ensemble work.
4: characters were introduced in a way you can feel Reiji is going downstairs into the abyss. Yuri being the first because she's the character he's the least interested into, Chako next because she's the sun, the light, she's Kana Arima... okno, and Nagi last because she's Chako's thematical opposite and had to have an impactful introduction. and the endgame and endgoal are already decided since day one. Nagi is waiting for Reiji to do the last step
5: a good physical condition, being resourceful and brave enough are the keys for a successful weekly story.
That's it. See ya tomorrow.

2024.05.14 17:25 itsnotgayifitsgoromi Happy Birthday Tchaikovsky(and Brahms I'm aware)

Happy Birthday Tchaikovsky(and Brahms I'm aware)
I posted this on my Facebook last week and some people liked it but my family and friends don't know classical music like we do here. It's probably not the best written thing ever and I definitely could expand on it with more time but please leave me some kind comments talking about any details I left out. Thank you 😊🎶
Happy Birthday to my favorite composer, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, born May 7, in 1840. He would be 184 years old. He is one of the most famous composers in all of music history, especially during the classical Romantic Period. Despite career success in his life as well as cultural significance all this time later, during his life, Tchaikovsky experienced significant hardship that most people do not know about. However, they should. Tchaikovsky's story is one of strife and unfairness. We should learn from the mistakes of his and others in his life so such that we can both understand the past and proceed to change for the better. Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk in the Russian Empire. In Votkinsk, there was very little opportunities for musical education and this was particularly problematic as Tchaikovsky showed musical prowess from a very early age. He began studying piano at five years old and has work from even before then, saved in history thanks to their family governess. He caught up to his teachers ability to read sheet music within a few years and his parents, both trained in the arts, supported him. When he was 10 years old, he was sent to a boarding school called The Imperial School of Jurisprudence(this bit is very important later) in St.Petersburg. This is not a music school. This is a school that would prepare Tchaikovsky for a career in civil servitude. His parents' finances gradually grew weaker and they wanted him to be able to take care of himself as soon as possible, and a career in music was considered very low class unless you were part of the aristocracy. Being separated from his mom at an early age, despite debate on their relationship with each other, scarred him for life and it got worse when Tchaikovsky's mother would pass away to cholera when he was 14. He was immediately sent back to school where his father did try to support his son musically by giving him a private tutor but Tchaikovsky ended up graduating into eventually, a senior assistant to the Ministry of Justice. Around the time of his graduation, a society was founded; the Russian Musical Society and its goal was to find Russian musical talent. They started hosting basic music educational classes which Tchaikovsky began attending until they opened up a conservatory where he joined immediately as a premiere student. This school allowed him to develop his professional skills and allowed him to develop his own style, a mix of western and Russian, something would in the future inspire many composers. Tchaikovsky graduated the conservatory in 1865 and was offered a job by his brother to teach music at the Moscow Conservatory which he accepted readily as just the thought of a professional career involving music brought him joy. His first performance soon followed this, conducted Johann Strauss II, another famous composer. In the next few coming years, he began combining his professiorial job with critiquing music. This got him to be able to be exposed to all types of music including Beethoven, whom he liked, and Schumann, whom he thought had poor orchestration. It also got him the chance to go international for the first time. Back in Russia, five people named Mily Balakirev, Cesar Cui,Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Romsky-Korsakov, and Alexander Borodin became know as "The Five". These were people that had an idea what Russian music should be and rejected anything from the western European musical ideology. Tchaikovsky got caught in the middle of this entire idea but still remained friendly with them, specifically Balakirev who helped him write the fantasy-overture Romeo and Juliet, also known as Tchaikovsky's first known masterwork. The Five actually liked his work and his second symphony as well but Tchaikovsky did his best to remain independent from them and their ideology as well as the conservative nature of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Tchaikovsky began to grow more and more popular in part to audiences listening with a more appreciative ear than before. His work became more and more performed. Nearing 1870s, Tchaikovsky began to write operas. They initially had mixed reviews but some of his most famous operas such as Swan Lake and Eugene Onegin come from this period. A Tchaikovsky trivia fact commonly known in modern times is that he was homosexual. This is very much the case so. However, the Russian government was much against homosexuality and Tchaikovsky was worried of attracting discrimination. He wanted to marry a woman to "shut the mouths of assorted contemptible creatures whose opinions mean nothing to me but are in a position to cause distress to those near to me." In 1877, Tchaikovsky married Antonina Miliukova, a girl from a respectable family with an average level of education, and a former student of Tchaikovsky's. The marriage was a failure and lasted less than a couple months. It made him incredibly depressed and gave him writers block. Tchaikovsky described her as a "woman who I am not the least in love". He had a mental breakdown and fled to switzerland. He says Antonina is not to be blamed for the failure of their marriage but due to a lack of character on his own part, this being indicative of feelings of guilt due to his own homosexuality. Any news of her brought him to become hysterical and a letter directly from her could cause him to become upset for a few days. After their separation, althought legally still married thanks to difficult divorce laws, he referred to her as "the reptile". Seemingly a victim in a story of a man covering up his homosexuality, Antonina was described as average intelligence but incredibly unstable mentally. She outlived him by 24 years but spent the last two decades in a mental asylum. Tchaikovsky had many male lovers but, mainly, Vladimir Lvovich Davïdov nicknamed "Bob". There are many letters Tchaikovsky wrote to him that describes their love for each other; how he feels the big cities are lonely(while on tour abroad)and he wished he was back home with his idol. There were plans for the both of them, plus Tchaikovsky's brother, to all live together in St. Petersburg but, unfortunately, Tchaikovsky died on November 6,1893. The cause of death at the time was death by cholera, the same as his mother. However, in the late 1960's, Alexander Voitov, a member of the School of Jurisprudence(before it was shut down), told a soviet musical scholar, who would end up imigrating to the United States in 1979, what really happened. In 1893, Duke Stenbok-Fermor wrote a letter addressed to Tsar Alexander III, talking about how he was disapproving in the amount of attention his nephew, who happens to be Davïdov, was getting from Tchaikovsky. The letter was to be passed on to the Tsar. Exposure of his homosexuality would have caused career failure, exile to Sibera, and public disdain for Tchaikovsky but, also, all the students of the School of Jurisprudence. However, instead of passing on the letter, the civil servant in charge of the task, Nickolay Jacobi, assembled the old boys from their school and went to Tchaikovskys apartment. After a meeting that lasted 5 hours, Tchaikovsky ran from the room very pale-looking and in distress. The others told Jacobi's wife that they required Tchaikovsky to kill himself and that he had promised to comply. Before this story was announced, people thought he had a nervous breakdown and saw him run to the kitchen, shouting "who cares anyway!?" and drink a glass of unboiled water, which was very dangerous at the time. This is now seen as him giving an explanation for what was to come. What makes this story more depressing is it is thought that there were other homosexual students in the School of Jurisprudence. In addition, the fact many scholars in Russia still even refuses to acknowledge that this forced suicide even happened, despite overwhelming evidence, saying "nothing like that would happen in the civilized Russia of the time" and some even refusing to acknowledge he was gay at all, again, despite overwhelming evidence! The fact this musical genius could have had more years of masterworks that we are, unfortunately denied, due to a selfish plot of murder, is revolting. This composer suffered his entire life but still managed to take his pain and turn it into something wonderful instead of displaying the pain alone. His famous 1812 Overture, he actually disliked. He thought it was loud, noisy, and without love or warmth. It was a piece he had truly written for money. As a side note, this is not about the War of 1812. This piece is about the commemoration of a Cathedral of Christ the Savior and a commemoration of the Tsar's 25 year reign. So every time on the Fourth of July you play this and feel patriotic, yeahhhh, you're actually celebrating the strength of the Russian military which I'm sure is probably not what you intend, especially nowadays. My favorite Tchaikovsky piece, his Serenade for Strings in C Major, was actually written right after the 1812 Overture and he loved that piece terribly and dreamed of playing it as soon as possible.
I doubt anyone will read this far lol, but if you did, thank you 😊 , below I've put some pictures of his houses which are both now museums.

2024.05.14 16:12 ScholarGrade Juniors - If you want to improve your chances, NOW is the time to start brainstorming essays

There have been an increasing number of juniors visiting this sub asking for advice about writing essays. Below are some tips and advice for making your essay stand out as excellent. Feel free to ask questions because I will answer every single question in the comments.
I know from experience that many of you are struggling to identify a good topic for your essay. Conventional wisdom says to start by brainstorming a list of potential topics, and chances are, you have already started a mental list of ideas. You might think you only have a few choices for topics, based on your activities or experiences, or essay examples you read, or the rough draft you already started (or worse, that GPT started...). I advise, however, that you put down your list of topics and back away from it. Forget that exists for a moment. Seriously - thinking about this initial list tethers you to certain ideas that might not actually be your best options.
Now you can begin brainstorming with a clean slate.
Start with thinking about what you want to show in your entire application, not just one essay. Every single component in your app has one purpose – to tell more about YOU. Filling out the rest of the application by rote and focusing solely on the essay is short-sighted and will leave so much potential untapped in your application.

It's About You. Tell Your Story - And Be The Protagonist

An admissions officer’s goal is to understand you fully, in the context of your background and the rest of the applicant pool. They will begin this with assessing your academic abilities and potential. Then they will evaluate how you will fit into the student body they’re trying to curate. All of this can be somewhat broad and diverse and touch on several institutional goals. But they will dig deep to find out what each applicant is like, what your core values and motivations are, what kind of student you will be, how you will contribute to the vibrant and intellectual campus community they’re building, etc.
Your goal with essay brainstorming is to ascertain how to powerfully tell your story in a manner that will fit these criteria. The entirety of your application (again, not just one essay) aims to showcase your abilities, qualifications, and uncommon attributes as a person in a positive way. Before you begin outlining or writing your application, you must determine what is unique about you that will stand out to an admissions panel. All students are truly unique. Not one other student has the same combination of life experiences, personality, passions, or goals as you do. Your job in your application is to frame your unique personal attributes in a positive and compelling way. How will you fit on campus? What personal qualities, strengths, core values, talents, or different perspectives do you bring to the table? What stories, deeper motivations/beliefs, or formative experiences can you use to illustrate all of this?
It is always helpful to start with some soul-searching or self-examination. You might not immediately know what you want to share about yourself. It’s not a simple task to decide how to summarize your whole life and being in a powerful and eloquent way on your application. Introspection prior to starting your application takes additional time and effort rather than jumping straight into your first draft. But it is also a valuable method to start writing a winning application that stands out from the stack.
You'll see the advice everywhere that all essay prompts are really about the same thing - you. The goal of each essay then is to showcase who you are, what matters to you, and how you think. I guarantee if you're on this sub enough, you'll hear the advice to "show, don't tell" when writing about yourself. But what does this mean really, and how do you do it well? How do you even get started on an essay that does this?

Introspection Questions

It’s often easiest to start thinking in terms of superlatives, especially those related to personal insights -- what are the most meaningful things about you, and what do you value the most? Here is a list of questions to help you brainstorm broadly before you narrow down your focus for writing:
I have a free introspection worksheet with over 100 questions like this designed to help you find ideas worth exploring in your essays. You can find it on the A2C Discord or download it directly here.

Find Your Story And Arc

Think of a small anecdote or story from your life that you could share that serves as a microcosm of who you are and what is important to you. It will massively help you narrow this down and find a gem of a story if you first start by thinking about your application arc or theme. This is the one-phrase summary of your entire application. It could be "brilliant entrepreneur who started her own successful business" or "talented athlete who wants to study economics and finance as they pertain to sports", or even "avid baker whose hobby sparked an interest in chemistry". It doesn't have to be related to your intended major, but it can help your arc be stronger and clearer if it is.
Once you have an arc determined and a story to share, think about what you want that story to say about you. This is where it can help to think of this as something you would share on a date - what impression does it make about you to the reader? Once you know this, start showing, not telling this attribute of yourself through your story. For example, instead of saying that you're compassionate toward others, you show an example of a time you were compassionate, then elaborate on why, and what it means to you.

Essay Brainstorming Techniques

If you are having trouble finding a story, or simply have writer’s block once you have picked your topic, here are some ideas to get your juices flowing:

Why Essays Matter

Here's the thing a lot of people don't realize about college admission: it's not an award for being the smartest, most accomplished, or most impressive. It's an invitation to join a community. Far too many students think that if they can just show that they're smart enough, they'll get in. Yale even says right on their admissions website that 75% of their applicants are academically qualified to succeed at Yale. But only ~4% are getting in. That should tell you that they're looking for more than just top tier test scores and grades. To be perfectly clear, you will need top tier grades and (optionally) test scores to show that you're qualified, and the vast majority of my students come to me with this part already in the bank. But what sets the admits apart? It's personal insight - sharing who you are, how you think, what matters to you, and how you engage community. You can't just say "/IAmVerySmart, please admit me," or even "I did a cool thing guys! Isn't that neat!" You need to go deeper and show them your core values, personal strengths, motivations, aspirations, character traits, foundational beliefs, personality, etc. And you need to do it in a charming, winsome way that makes them like you and want to invite you to join their community.
So how do I get students to do this? All of my students complete that introspection worksheet. We go through it and find the stories, examples, anecdotes, conversations, memories, relationships, and other things from their life that will help us craft a strong and personally insightful narrative. We also make lists of the values, strengths, and key personal qualities we want to showcase. Once we have some topics, outlines, abstracts, or rough drafts, we talk about which stories to tell where, how to tell them well, and what details to include to present the best they have to offer. Then we refine, edit, polish, and enhance over and over until the story sings, but more importantly shows their heart and soul. We also go through all the other application components to ensure consistency, quality, and distinctiveness.
Here's why this works so well: at most highly selective colleges there is a primary reader (or 2-3) who will review everything first and then present it to the admissions committee, who then votes on whether to admit you. That presentation typically goes one of three ways:
  1. Total enthusiasm, energy, and excitement. They strongly advocate for admission and paint a clear picture of how you will contribute to their goals and community. Everyone in the room picks up on that energy and is leaning forward in their chairs, looking for reasons to admit you. This is quite rare, generally less than 5 out of every 100 applications, even among those which are "fully qualified." When you do this right, you show depth, meaning, and valuable personal insights so the reviewer is learning about who you are and how you might engage the community they're curating. You come alive off the page as a person, not just another file.
  2. Business as usual. You're another great applicant in a pile of great applicants. They share a basic review of the facts, your profile, stats, strengths, weaknesses, etc. Maybe someone on the committee finds something they love, and they really push for admission. More likely, not and you get deferred/waitlisted even though there wasn't anything "wrong" with your application. They just didn't love you enough to commit.
  3. "Here's a stack of 20 applications that I didn't find all that compelling, so we won't present them individually, but you guys are the committee and you make the decisions. So let me know if there are any you want to talk about." In this case, unless there's a letter of endorsement from an athletics coach or your last name matches several buildings on campus, you're probably not getting additional consideration, much less admission. They will regret to inform you.
Everything we're doing is designed to help them get to know themselves, present the best they have to offer, and land in that first group. Having top tier essays is the single best way to get there. Get started on brainstorming in the next few weeks so you'll have time to get a few essays completed over the summer.

2024.05.14 15:20 Low_Cheesecake7809 Average

Average
Can someone help me? How I can get the average from ALL the “LatestVals” combined? Now it just divides the last value by the “ChartSize” I cannot get further than what is shown in the picture. The values themselves are plotted correctly I just can’t get the (moving) average right.
I’m still fairly new to LabVIEW so I hope you don’t mind this question. Thanks in advance

2024.05.14 15:20 Silent_Dom02 [M4F] A rivalry rekindled (Romance/Slice of life)

Me and you. Not two peas in a pod but more like 2 rabid animals in a cage. Every moment we found some time together, it would be filled with insulting jabs, belittling, almost insulting phrases to knock each others confidence. Why?...well we aren't really sure. It wasn't like anyone got hurt or we went too far, but the rivalry that came out of nowhere seemed to stem from some sort of unrequited attraction that we were too stubborn to admit.
A few years later, we've moved on with our lives and the old high school days seemed to be behind us. We matured, grew out of our spite and went about our mundane adult lives. I changed my name, moved across the country and essentially started a new life. I wasn't flowing with cash at the time so i found that the best way to save money whilst getting a new connection in the city was to put an ad online for a new roomate in the apartment i chose to stay at.
Unbeknownst to yourself, you were also looking for the same deal and so you hastily accepted the ad, not knowing that it was in fact your old high school rival that was to be your roomate. Will we still hold the same grudge like angsty teens or find more common ground through our grown up eyes?
Greetings all, i hope the above premise caught your interest. If it did, feel free to read on.
I am a 21 year old male based in the GMT timezone and i am seeking to roleplay with a literate female writer about the above plot. I am a literate writer myself where i write multiple paragraphs and I'd say im pretty detailed with my writing.
Availability wise, i am mostly free throughout the day as im in between jobs at the moment. I don't mind what timezone you're in but it would be good to know so i can generally keep track of timings on your end.
I want to write with someone passionate, detailed and who i can talk to OOC and develop a good connection with as i feel like its important to enjoy the company you write with. I will always be open and transparent with my thoughts and feelings and i trust that you will be too.
I also prefer roleplaying on discord so it'd be handy if you preffered it too.
Reference pictures for characters are always preffered. To preface, i don't use realistic ones.
If you're interested, feel free to send me a chat and introduce yourself. I'll get back to you as soon as i can.
See ya~

I usually read books on Royal Road and Inkitt. I decided to give wattpad a shot for something different.
But it disappointed me quite easily, so far the only books I have come across are ceo or mafia, which I am not complaining I like those books yet at some point it feels repetitive. As if its the same story with the same plot but with different characters, but that gets a pass all because they actually have good quality writing.
What I am gonna complain about is the lack of quality on non romance books. Seriously, do some people not know basic english? Its ok if you don't, but if you are gonna write in english at least make an effort to learn how to write properly. Also some books just feel like picture books, at that point they might as well make a comic but they can't because those pictures are Ai generated or taken from Pinterest. It doesn't bother me if the pictures are on the first chapter only, it bothers me when its in the middle of the book MULTIPULE TIMES
If you need pictures to help you *describe* characters, place or creature, are you even writing?
Cause the last time I checked, writing is about using dialogue, description and expositions to tell people a good story. Your story needs to be good plot wise and writing wise.
Which brings me to my other point, script writing(only dialogue writing). This is the most horrendous thing I have ever crossed, the worst part is its not even proper script writing. Do you guys fear commitment or something?
Bad writing or lazy writing really turns me down. If there is some grammatical mistakes here and there I wouldn't mind But if the book has to much dialogue with direly any description or exposition, I am immediately dropping it.
So if you have good book both in good writing and plot you can link it. I read about anything, but currently I am looking for something non romance, but romance can be a side plot.
And if you don't know if your writing is good enough, just put it through Hemmingway editor, its what Royal Road writers use to see how well there writing is.
For me the standard is Grade 9 but if I had to go low it would be grade 5
