No disk?
At one point this had tiger on it, something happened and now it does not show up nor boot from. Is there a way to get the data back. Also when booting up on a different version, or starting it up on Mac OS 9 install CD, it goes to a grey screen with a mouse cursor, is this normal, it’s on the original drive. Lastly, I can’t get to the boot screen, the one where you hold option? Power Mac G4

2024.02.29 23:15 GraphiteJason USB SATA Help

I have 16 hard drives that I've harvested from my old computers and laptops over the years. Some IDE, some SATA. I'm cleaning up my house and want to get rid of all this old computer junk, so I bought an adaptor that allows me to connect these as external hard drives and I'm able to pull all the data off onto my laptop.
Everything was fine for 14 of the drives but when it came to an IDE Maxtor drive, the computer dinged when I turned the power on the hard drive as if it had been connected, I can hear the drive spinning, but the drive never shows up on the computer. I've tried multiple jumper settings and same result. No problem, I figured that the drive was bad and one out of 13 is pretty good considering some if the drives are 20 years old. I plugged in the last drive, which is also a Maxtor IDE and it does the exact same thing. I tried multiple jumper settings on it as well, to no avail. Is there some trick to connecting a Maxtor drive externally or is it just coincidental that the only 2 drives I couldn't connect to, happen to be Maxtor?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Hdd replacement questions
Hdd still works (loudly) just fine and does the job but if OG Xbox drives are failing at 01-05 then I assume a 98 is due for a replacement lol. Saw there was a few different cable sizes of newer ide hdds available but also converters to sata.
Basically my question is what spec (Cable type and size) hdd do I replace it with or is there compatibility issues I’d run into with a sata converter? Also won’t I need a different power connector as well for sata? The os is W-98. Thanks guys!
Ps: what little I do know from friends is not to go above 40gb (rule of thumb) but for win98 lower is fine for me. Other than that thanks again in advance!

I am trying to access some data that's very old probably about 1998 or 1999 from this older maxter hard drive. Issue is I can't seem to access the drive when I plug it in with an IDE to USB adapter and these are the errors I get. I've tried using Linux to access the drive and it comes up as unknown and I cannot seem to access anything. I would love if someone could give me some advice or Direction on how I can recover this data from this older computer to a newer one

2023.02.20 23:45 HammsGuy Hey all, question about IDE HDD..

Hey all, around 4 years ago I modded my PS2 with an internal IDE HDD and now I’m having trouble..
The HDD works perfectly with the PS2, I can load whatever games I’ve got installed. I took the HDD out to add some more games to it, but my PC doesnt recognize the HDD. Ive tried using OPL Manager, WIINHIP, and HDLBatch. All of them say that there is no PS2 Hard drive available.. Im using a Maxtor 6L250R0 IDE HDD, I have the IDE/SATA adapter, and Ive set my Jumper to Master.. Any ideas what the problem could be? My only guess is that my adapter isn’t functional anymore? Hard to believe because its been boxed up ever since I did the mod years ago lol..

HDD won’t initialize via Disk Management. Is it fubar?
This is an old IDE drive (Maxtor Meteor II?) so I am using a USB adapter to read it. The drive does show up under device manager and also disk management, however attempting to initialize the drive via disk management gives the error “The request could not be performed because of an I/O error”. I have confirmed the issue is not the adapter because I have used this adapter successfully in the past. Important note is that the drive periodically “clicks” about every 15 minutes. My guess is that’s dead. Any odd fixes out there that might bring it back? I apologize about the potato picture quality.

SGPC K55 Build, Aka SharGwa PC K55(A56)
Update: Added custom side panels from JakefaceCustoms over at Esty. Check him. I messaged him and he made these for me. So he has the measurements if you want to get some yourself.
https://preview.redd.it/sndvnggwkit91.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=29d598d9bedb05171e2c496dfb434b0b84d7db61
Like the bird flying into the fan effect from the mb
This is a swiss gear 20L bag I had since 2014. Still going strong. Case fits well in the second compartment. The first laptop compartment fits a 17.3 portable monitor. Although lighter than other 6L cases, it is still heavy with all the components. The stock SGPC panels will crack around the letter cutouts almost immediately. If you travel a lot may be better to get the aluminum panels or better constructed acrylic panels.
May paint the case the color of the bike on the screen
Pslate custom 30x series sleeved PSU cables are awesome.
Glue strip for the mesh can be used for case light strips

Where the case gets all its weight.
Hey K55 gang. Yes its been around awhile, but it's one of the few that is reasonable and has similar dimensions to the Velka 7. It's also available now on eBay/amazon without going through a third party. As many of you have said, this case is a bear to work in so I read all your posts and YTs. Yawl saved me a ton of time. I got tired of waiting for the Velka 7 to come back in stock so tested a build to see if this was satisfactory. I dig it. The K55 is just a few millimeters different from the Velka 7. I will also use it vertical hence the aluminum version with the power button on the top. Bonus that it has 5" separated holes for a handle on the IO that also protects the small bt/wifi antennas. I like the look of this case. Cheap, sturdy and challenging. I would have probably given up on it if I didn't already have unsleeved cables from a prior build, but it was still difficult to connect with my fat fingers. MB has to go in first. IS-50 fan gets reconfigured on the heatsink out of the box or the mb will not fit. Connected the PSU ESP cable prior to mb placement.
First impression was ut oh- You don't realize how small the case is until you first hold it when its empty. Coming from a Sliger S620 (Great case, but too big to carry around)
The GPU is a very tight 2 slot. MY FE card barely fit. A thicker riser cable and the card would have hit the side panel and I didn't want to use any standoffs if i could get away with it.
The power button is very sensitive and easy to turn off with little pressure. Something to keep in mind if you use it vertically as it will sits at mouse/kb level.
The LINKUP-PCIe 4.0 X16 Riser Cable Dual Reverse Connectors {18cm} WILL NOT fit even though the standard 18cm SGPC Riser cable that came with the case will fit (still tight). The SGPC mb 16x slot connector to the mb is longer than the Link up connector, but the flat cables themselves are the same length- you loose length when you connect it to the mb. The link below is the 21cm version that should fit (eyed guess), but I have not tested since I got the wrong one- but it looked like 3 more mm would do the trick. Link to the 21cm version (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B092JT5M29?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1)
SGPC K55 Specs and notes, AKA SharGwa PC K55(A56). Reused components I had on the road in my Sliger case except for the 11700K which would run overly hot possibly with the IS-50X
-Intel Core i5-10400 31C Idle/68C Load. Spare 65w processor I had from the NZXT H1 firecase.
-IS-50X V2 TDP 130W 57mm clearance. Was able to use side panels w/o standoffs w/about 1mm clearance) ID Cooling fan replaced w/ARCTIC P12 SLIM PWM PST. Quiet non-turbulent.
-GIGABYTE Z590I AORUS Ultra LGA 1200. A workhorse of a mb.
-TEAMGROUP T-Force Vulcan Z DDR4 32GB Kit (2x16GB) 3200MHz. CL 18 in 32mm height cooled just under the IS-50X heatsink. Taller ram will hit the bottom of the heat sink if you array the IS-50 like I did with the heat pipe bend facing the IO shield on the G Z590I.
-WD_BLACK SN770 1TB Internal SSD PCIe Gen 4 x4 (placed on back on MB. It can only run in Gen3 with this processor and not in the Gen4 slot on the front- I will trade it out for 11400 my kid has so he can use the 11700K- more than a fair trade I should say.
-RTX 3070 Ti FE 34C Idle/75/78C Load (Uniengine Bench/Furmark). I was going for the 3060 Ti at a BB card drop but all that was available was the 3070 Ti.
-SGPC PCIe 3.0 X16 Riser Cable / Dual Reverse Connectors / for k39/k40/k49 18cm (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09XWV722N?psc=1)&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details). You do not have to change to PCI-E Gen 3 in the bios with this intel board and processor- I think that is only AMD. SGFC riser cable works very well. It probably would have fit more comfortably at 18.5 cm but I'm sure the tolerances in these mass produced cases are not exact and will vary from case to case.
-SGPC K55 Silver Aluminum for vertical tower use. Didn't want to wait for the red or black version from eBay. Added a 5 inch nickel plated kitchen cabinet handle from Home Depot to the rear IO frame since the cutouts were already there. Cut the screw down 1/2 an inch and added a nut to give it more rigidity. Hard to insert post-build so if you are going to add one place it before you put the components in.
-Cooler Master V850 SFX Gold, 850W. 2 years old, still going strong and quiet.
-Noctua NF-A9x14 HS-PWM chromax.Black.swap, Premium Quiet Slim Fan, (92x14mm, Black). Front/Top exhaust for FE card. Little fan can blow relatively silent at load and doubles as a hand warmer from the FE rear exhaust. The fans capes really pays off while in general usage keeping the temps around a constant 32C CPU/34C GPU/40C M2.
-SFF Noir Shadowlink Antenna - Dual Band WiFi and Bluetooth Antenna (Mini)
-On order- Jakeface Customs Side Panel Airflow Mod Bamboo pattern (Esty online store- see drawing below)

-Pslate Custom unsleeved cables (reused from the Sliger S620 build) lengths are good.
-Logitech - MX Anywhere 3 Wireless Bluetooth Fast Scrolling Mouse. Responsive, fast with no delays over BT.
-Logitech - MX Mechanical Mini Compact Wireless Mechanical Tactile Switch Keyboard. To save battery life the RGB turns off when your hands are not on the keyboard. Joy to type with but takes a few seconds to light up when the sensor detects your phalanges. Light stays on for 5 sec then goes dark. Works over BT but much better with the included USB dongle.
- Plantronics - Voyager Focus UC Headset. 3 year old conference headset with good sound and comfortable for long meetings and calls. Can pair to two devices at once.
First true SFF build for me sub 10L. Built PCs in the 90s when it was beige ANTEC cases that were 3 feet tall, ribbon cables that you could jump rope with and cussing a lot because I forgot to set the jumpers correctly on the array of Maxtor 30mb Hard Drives at 2500 rpm. The 14 inch monitor weighed 30 stone just to play and test load runner levels that my roommate coded levels for from 83-90. Ahh the days of the platter drives, 56k modems, and rifles only rooms on MOH Invasion Normandy.

2022.05.05 07:04 etherlore SCSI drive compatibility on G3 beige desktop

I cannot figure out what the compatibility is for SCSI drives on the G3 running OS 8.6 or 9.1, some seemingly similar drives work, some don't.
I have a beige desktop G3 with an ATTO UL2D PCI SCSI controller with a 68 pin interface (and onboard 50 pin). I have three SCSI hard drives:
The only drive Drive Setup is able to initialize is the Maxtor. This works perfectly directly connected to a 68 pin cable from the ATTO, or trough a 50 to 68 pin adapter from the motherboard 50 pin slot. The other two drives show in Drive Setup no matter what interface, adapter, cable or jumper settings I use. I can understand that the Ultra 320 drive with a 68 to 80 pin adapter would be a long shot. But why would the Maxtor work, but not the Fujitsu? They are both Ultra 160 LVD drives.
SCSIProbe 5.2 recognizes all drives with correct model numbers.
Any ideas for what could be going on here? I'm inclined to buy another 68 pin drive, but since I obviously have some gap in what the compatibility is, that would be a gamble. Any advice is appreciated.

2022.01.24 20:25 ScherzKeksFlo Guidance needed for HDD upgrade with Xbit modchip

I’m trying to upgrade my HDD (160gb Maxtor IDE) to a Samsung SSD 240gb. My Xbox is running a Xbit modchip with an unknown bios installed. Haven’t touched that Xbox for 15+ years.
So far I do have an IDE to SATA converter with an JM20330 chip, and an 80 wire ide cable. When I connect everything the Xbox goes to service message 7 instead of booting the dvd with Hexen2022 I’ve tested the sata adapter on an old pc and it recognizes correctly the ssd either as master or slave depending wether jumper is set or not.
My question is now shouldn’t the bios be able to detect the 240gb ssd as it apparently was able to handle the previously installed 160gb hdd? Updating the Xbit modchip could be problematic as I’ve read due to compatibility issues of the flashing software.
Is it worth the try to set up a win98 os to be able to update the Xbit or is it more likely that the bios is fine but the sata adapter is the culprit?
What bios could/should be used for the Xbit? Any directions for me? I’m a bit lost with all the informations available.

2021.02.25 01:39 EntrepreneurDense851 Problem with Ps2 reading hardrive because I lost the jumper?

So I had bought a Maxtor Ide Hardrive 160gb and a Freemcboot memory card. Now following guides, at first I had used the hardrive on the Ps2 while waiting for my Ide to usb adapter, and I formatted it successfully and extracted Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 to it from a disc. Now I have formatted it using a guide and tried many ways using Winhiip but the Ps2 won't detect the HDD in any application. Not Hddmanager, HDL, or OPL. Now when connecting it to my PC I had read a guide and that to connect it to PC, I was to remove the jumper cable. I did and I lost it because I thought it was like a protective tab and thought it was unimportant. If I buy a new jumper will it fix the issue with the Ps2 not reading the HDD. My PC reads it just fine though I think the jumper needs to be set to master. Also it is a compatible HDD. It's a Maxtor 160gb 6Y160P0 Thanks in advance too.

2020.12.15 19:33 Waffle_bastard Trying to Recover From Old Maxtor HDD

Hi folks, I’ve got a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 that I’m trying to recover ancient data from. I just want to make a disk image of it and recover whatever data I can. I’ve tried three different IDE USB kits on two different computers, and all jumper pin configurations (especially Cable Select). The disk spins up and is not recognized by the computer (in this case, a Linux laptop).
I purchased an identical drive and it was able to be recognized by the laptop without any issues. I performed a board swap thinking that it might be a faulty board, but this had no effect. The donor drive can be read with either board, but my hard drive is not recognized with either board.
I noticed that the donor drive sounds different than my drive - when you power it up, it clicks once then spins up fine. My drive clicks repeatedly, so I think it may be a stuck head. I opened up the donor drive to see if I could do a practice run of manually unsticking the head, but I’m pretty sure I killed that drive, as it now just beeps repeatedly and doesn’t read.
Of course, I’m not going to open up my actual drive, as the practice run did not go according to plan. Any ideas?

2020.09.05 01:11 Waffle_bastard Old Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8 40GB

Hey folks, I’m doing some data recovery / backing up my ancient hard drives, and I’ve got one very stubborn Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8. I’m guessing it’s got a Windows XP NTFS filesystem on it if anything. The drive hasn’t been abused and has been stored in an ESD bag - it’s just old, and it’s now or never to retrieve my forgotten data.
It spins up fine and doesn’t sound abnormal at all. However, I am unable to get any computer to recognize it. I have tried three different IDE USB adapters and have connected it to both a Windows and Linux system. Neither computer recognizes the USB adapter in Disk Management / Disks if the drive is connected. However, Linux sees the USB adapter itself, but only if the drive is disconnected.
I’ve tried all of the jumper pin configurations - Master, Slave, CS, and without a jumper.
I don’t expect it to mount an intact filesystem, but if I can get the drive to at least be recognized, I can make an image of it and do data recovery from there, as I’ve done with other drives. Any ideas on getting a computer to recognize it?

oh btw, i don't have any DVD R or DVD RW discs around atm so idk what else to do idk if my drive is too big or not? my HDD i'm tryin' to clone into is a Maxtor 320GB 3.5" 4-Pin IDE Hard Drive STM3320620A, it's tellin' me to not use a jumper to make it a slave drive, but it seems to not want to do anything passed loading past tha starting segment of Gentoox Loader, idk if i have tha right hard drive or not, however i do have 2 other 250gb IDE drives as backups one of them is Segate and a WD
