Developer Intent or Death of the Author?
2024.05.14 18:12 Crooked_Mantis Developer Intent or Death of the Author?
I've been thinking lately about how different players form of their own interpretations about Team ICO's works. And I think there are two main approaches to theories that get developed.
Players who focus in on the Developer Intent, and cling to various tidbits of information provided by old concept art, datamined demos, and interviews with Ueda. These players wonder specifically about what Ueda and the team members thought of these environments and characters. They want to know what the creators felt the story being told was about. These interpretations typically pull evidence from a lot of outside resources, citations, and even the influences that Ueda and the team might have pulled from at the time.
But others seem to remove factors of creation from their theory-crafting, looking at these games not as products made in a linear order by a team, but simply a set of stories to be interpreted and connected regardless of real world context. It's an approach very emblematic of the 'Death of the Author' concept. And weirdly enough, I think Ueda is in this camp, because he seems to be the absolute least interested in what his intent for these stories was at the time. He often describes his thoughts on them as his interpretations (or 'just one interpretation'), as though he wants to put himself on the same level as an audience member and de-emphasize his part as the creative lead.
But what is your approach to these narratives? Is developer intent important to your interpretation or do you think it shouldn't factor into things? Do you feel you're somewhere in the middle, or take different approaches depending on the subject?
Feel free to explain further in the comments.

2024.05.14 17:53 Certain-Phrase-9061 ESH? I'm considering breaking up with bf over his comments about my mental health during an argument about finances.
I 23F in a relationship with 27M. We've been dating for two years now. When we started dating I was in a bad place mentally but he promised to be supportive and do his best to make it work. We argue but we never reach the point where we say hurtful things.
A few days ago we were arguing about finances. We used to split the bills but for the last 4 months I've been paying for everything. If I wasn't tight on money I wouldn't have brought up the issue. Between bills/therapy/helping my little sister. I Just can't pay for everything on my own while he spends all of his money on clothes and video games. I have no problem with that but the least he can do is help a little. We were arguing and when he had nothing to reason with he started yelling at me to stop being controlling. I told him "At least let me help you with how to handle your expenses. You can't go on like this forever" His response was "I think you should go back on your antidepressants" I didn't know what to say to that and he added "You have new things to complain about every day. For fucks sake try to enjoy life a little or change your therapist". In reality I've been doing well over the last 8-9 months. I feel much better than before and everyone around me noticed. I never really complained about anything before. This is the first time I ever brought up the issue.
The next day he apologized for raising his voice and that was it. I tried to talk about what he said and how it hurt me but he wouldn't let me complete the sentence. I just can't seem to forget what he said and whenever I try to talk about it he brushes it off and changes the subject. He promised to be more careful with his money and help with the bills. But I really don't care about it anymore. All I'm thinking about is whether what happened is worth breaking up over or if I should try and talk about it again although I know he won't let me. I now feel like I can't express that anything upsets me without getting accused of being mental or crazy. (he never did this before. This the first time he ever used it against me).

2024.05.14 17:35 Successful-Weight673 This community is kinda toxic
I hate how you can’t simply share in opinion in chat like “bounties are really difficult and unbalanced for casual players like myself and I’m losing money to repairs” without people talking down on you “skill issue” this “skill issue” that, I’m a pretty well centered person, but for some reason that shit gets to me. I’m well aware that people aren’t going to always share the same opinion but why can’t we just discuss our views and talk pros and cons instead of just shaming someone for not being as good as you or not sharing the views everyone else shares. It makes it hard to say positive things about this community because there are so many keyboard warriors, granted I’ve met some really kind and helpful people in this community and those are the people that made me decide to stay and really enjoy the game even with all of its flaws, but I wish some of these players would grow up and act their age, if you don’t share my opinion, tell me why instead of just saying “skill issue”I would appreciate if we could have a civil discussion down below without hating on each other so I can see how others feel on this subject, if you’ve read all this I sincerely appreciate your time.

2024.05.14 17:35 StevesEvilTwin2 A new theory on the subject of the Secret Note #11 photo and the relationship between Marnie/Jas/Shane explained
There have been many theories about the deeper meaning behind the photograph of a woman who looks like Marnie and a little girl who looks like Jas, because it just doesn't make sense from metatextual perspective that it would be simply what it appears as (an old photo of Marnie and Jas).
There have been many attempts at solving this mystery, with some veering off into ludicrous triple tinfoil hat conspiracy theory territory, some that focus too much on spinning a juicy in-universe story without considering whether ConcernedApe would write something like that, and others that go too far in the opposite direction. However, I believe that my theory has the strongest foundation out of all theories I have seen, in terms of both metatextual justification, and in-universe plausibility.
In other words, I think I may have solved the mystery of Secret Note 11, which is the following:
- Secret Note #11 contains neither Marnie or Jas, but rather is a photo of Marnie' sister (Shane's mother) and Jas' mother as a child.
- The purpose or 'secret message' of the note is to clarify the relationship between Marnie/Shane/Jas and inform the player that Shane and Jas' mother were childhood friends.
Below I will explain my justification for arriving at the above conclusion.
First, there let's take a closer look at the photo itself. Secret Note 11 is a
sepia photo graph showing
a woman who looks like Marnie and
a little girl who looks like Jas.
Now consider that the "current era" in Stardew Valley appears to be around the 90s to early 2000s based on technological and societal trends and that Jas is around 8 years old based on the content of her school lessons.
The little girl in the photo is standing up by herself, which would mean that the youngest she could be is around 3 years old. That would be at most 5 years before the present if the girl is in fact Jas. However, 5 years before the present era isn't nearly far back enough for
sepia photography to be the norm (color photographs already became the norm in the 1970s), which indicates that this photo is likelier far older, and almost certainly older than Jas herself.
In other words, the little girl in the photo is not Jas. But then who is she? Well, the simplest assumption when you see such a strong resemblance between two people is family relation, and since Jas doesn't seem to have any extended family relationships, by Occam's Razor, the little girl in the photo must be
her mother.
Now then what about the woman? Well she looks like Marnie, but if we assume that the little girl is Jas' mother, then Marnie in the present looks a bit too young to have been the woman in the photo. So perhaps an older sister. Now what else do we know about about
a potential older sister of Marnie? We know that
Marnie is stated to be Shane's aunt, which oddly enough is the only extended family relationship (i.e. not parent and child) that we know of among the inhabitants of Pelican Town. If the woman is Marnie's older sister then she might actually be Shane's mother.
But actually, we have reason to be certain that it is Shane's mother, because another relationship we are explicitly informed of is that
Shane was close to Jas' parents and was made her godfather because of that. And thus we have the final piece of the puzzle. If Shane was close to Jas' mother, and both families were from Pelican Town, then it's reasonable to assume that the two families were close in general, and hence why there would be a picture with Shane's mother and Jas' mother.
However, the subject of the photograph is also kind of weird if you think about it (a photo of a woman with her son's best friend and nobody else?) but that oddness actually makes more sense from an in-universe perspective because the Secret Notes are supposed to be
things that people have lost/misplaced, and the unexpected pairing of the people in the photo probably led whoever originally possessed the photo to have not particularly cherished it. If it was originally in Marnie's possession, then most likely it was placed away in storage and eventually forgotten about because she would naturally prioritize keeping track of photos of her own family together. And if it was in Shane's possession, it was probably too painful for him to look at two lost loved ones together (assuming Shane's parents are dead because why else would he rely on his aunt?) in his depressed state and so he buried it deep in the back of the drawer before likewise forgetting about it.
Furthermore, there is a metatextual justification for Shane being Jas' mother's childhood friend. We know that ConcernedApe loves making easter eggs to works that were significant inspirations for Stardew Valley, and the whole being reunited with your childhood friend upon returning to the countryside was a recurring element of the original Harvest Moon games, yet there is no such relationship available for the Player Farmer, nor does there appear to be any such relationships among the NPCs… until you look closer and stumble upon the odd situation with Shane, Marnie and the guardianship of Jas, investigate further and discover Secret Note 11, and finally realize that it is Shane who had the childhood friend story, except it ended in tragedy.
In conclusion, the purpose of Secret Note 11 is clarify the relationship between Marnie/Shane/Jas and add a reference to the typical "childhood friend" trope in Harvest Moon games. submitted by

2024.05.14 17:32 pitchthrowdodge Classic Starter Guide: An In-Depth Look
With all the new players entering the game as of late, a lot of the same questions get asked - specifically, ones like "How can I make the perfect team for classic/endless/etc.?". The guide ahead is an attempt at answering more common questions on the former end, from the perspective of someone who almost exclusively plays Classic and many wins under my belt in doing so. Community feedback welcome; hopefully something like this can expand into something like a wiki/full guide so we can help new players down the line, too!
Classic and You: Starting Out So you just picked up the game, but not sure where to start. "Which starters are best?" "What team should I go with first?" "I unlocked [x] - can I beat Classic with this?"
Let me reassure you:
you can beat Classic with anything. (Yes, even something like Caterpie.)
That said, it's understandable to not know where to start, especially if you don't know all the starters, or maybe haven't played all the various generations of Pokemon through the years. Many of them have their own strengths and weaknesses, and some are built stronger than others. For example: Fuecoco is commonly the #1 recommended starter out of the base selection you get when first starting the game. Why? His final evolution, Skeledirge, naturally learns Torch Song, which is a hard-hitting fire move that guarantees a Sp. Attack buff each time it hits. This lets you snowball fairly quickly, as each attack makes you stronger and stronger during battles. Many starters have "specialty" tricks like this that give them an edge - Sprigatito's final evolution, for instance, gets Flower Trick, a hard-hitting grass move that always crits (and therefore always ignores opponent defensive boosts and/or your own negative debuffs). Even with all these being the case, though, there's no "perfect" team to start with that will guarantee a win - and in fact, getting a win on your first run can be exceedingly difficult. Your starters all only have 10 IVs, neutral natures, and no egg moves - they're the bare bones minimum to get going. And that's okay. But it means you need to
temper your expectations. Pokerogue is a rogue-like - and in classic rogue-like form, you build upon what you start with little by little.
Your primary goal shouldn't be to get a Classic win at the start. It's certainly doable, but even if you win, you're still likely without any reliable starter to take on Endless just yet, so there's no sense in rushing there. Instead, focus on that concept of building - specifically, building your starter pool. Every time you catch something, you unlock it as a starter (if you don't have it yet). You also get candies, which can be used to power up those starters by either unlocking a passive ability (unlocking additional features) or reducing their point cost, letting you bring more starters to each run (or more powerful ones!). Catching things with higher IVs also make your starting stats better - catching a 31 Speed IV Pidgey, for instance, means your Pidgey starter now
permanently has 31 Speed IVs. More stats = more power, and getting higher IVs on your starters is probably the biggest early jump you can get on pushing your team further.
With this in mind, making a "perfect" team is less important than just making
A team, so that we can go out and catch some things. As for what to catch, though, here's a list of things I'd keep an eye out for:
- Anything with a missing and/or "dark" pokeball under their name. Just like in some of the main Pokemon games, Pokemon in Pokerogue will be marked with a pokeball if they've been captured before. If it's missing, and you want it as a starter, catch it! More importantly, though, is the "darkened" icon of the pokeball - this indicates that you've unlocked the starter, but this one has something you don't have yet; maybe a gender, or maybe an ability you don't have yet. For instance, a Meowth starter that you have may only have Pickup, but the one in battle before you now has Technician. Catching these "darkened ball" pokemon will unlock more options for your starters, letting you switch between these unlockables at the pokemon select screen when you start your later runs. I generally recommend catching as many of these as possible - in the beginning, it'll seem like every pokemon has a dark ball, but that's because you don't have many things unlocked yet. As you unlock more things, they'll get rarer - and more importantly, when you start looking for those elusive Hidden Abilities (HAs), these darkened balls will help you discover them more easily when you have everything else already unlocked. Remember, this is a rogue-like - we're building our starters here for future runs!
- Anything "rare". This is somewhat subjective, because "rare" can mean anything from "hard to find" to "legendary". In general, though, I recommend keeping an eye out for things you don't see often - starters, for instance, or legendary/pseudo-legendary/ultra beast/etc. "boss" monsters at the end of every 10 waves. But catching duplicates serves a secondary purpose - remember, it also gets you candies, which you can use to power up those rare pokemon starters you have later. Getting candies from friendship is certainly doable, but especially for rarelegendary pokemon, this can take a loooooong while. Catch them if you can to make it easier on yourself later. (A sub-point of this: If a rare or starter is available in a daily run, consider "farming" the daily run over and over to catch them again and again! Many of the daily run guides point these out intentionally for this reason - daily runs can sometimes be the best way to target farm candies in this way.)
- Anything you plan on using a lot. Somewhat of another sub-point of the above, catching duplicates of things you know you'll use often can be useful for candy collection. Specifically, this works well for things you know you'll use often - your first few shinies, for instance, or general-use pokemon that have Pickup. Build your Zigzagoon army! Candy collecting is especially useful for these to reduce costs, letting you take more of them with your legendary into Endless mode when you get to that point.
- Any shiny. This goes without saying for many, but shinies are the lifeblood of Pokerogue. You need them...a lot of them. They come in three flavors - starting from the weakest, a yellow shiny (Luck 1), then blue (Luck 2), and finally red (Luck 3), with the color being the "star" marker of the shiny pokemon on their HP bar. Eventually you'll want as many Luck 3 shinies as you can get your hands on, but when you're starting out, you're building from 0 - so catch any you see, even if it means failing your Classic run to do so. A new run takes an hour to start back up; a new shiny could take days or even weeks to find in Classic. (Ideally, though, don't be afraid to refresh/"save scum" to try and find a way to catch it without sacrificing your run if you can, and if you're willing. No sense in wasting all that work.)
- Don't neglect your team. Remember, our eventual goal is to win Classic...but more importantly, we're hoping to get as far as we can, and 190 if possible. The sprint from 180-190 is the most profitable floor in Classic for egg vouchers, with each Elite 4 member & the Champion at 190 giving them upon victory (Plus, first time wins get you bonus achievement vouchers too - two for one!). With this in mind, you want to make sure to balance your team out as you go, and don't neglect it as you progress. Perhaps your team needs a good rock-type wall to throw in the way of hard-hitting trainer pokemon. Maybe you're looking for a Ground-type to soak all those electric moves you keep running into in the electrical biomes. Good team building will carry you further than any IV or egg move ever could. Even the strongest legendaries can fold to a weakness.
This "starting out" phase doesn't have a specific length of time to get past - everyone progresses at their own pace, and some will get luckier with egg pulls and catches than others.
Don't get discouraged. Just keep building on what you have - that's your initial goal, and it only gets easier as you do it.
As you start going through your Classic runs, the main resource you're looking to accumulate at first is egg vouchers - as many as you can get your grubby little new player hands on. Beating gym leaders, Elite 4 members, the Champion, and beating Classic all reward you with them. Doing the Daily Run each day also rewards you with a 10x pull voucher. Rarely, they can even show up after beating a stage in the item choice rewards - if so,
pick them, usually over most anything else. Eggs build on your starters, and usually with either massively boosted IVs or egg moves to give them considerable bumps in power. Rarely, you can even get shinies from them.
And speaking of the egg gacha:
only pull from the Shiny gacha at first. The entirety of your goal as a new player should be accumulating shinies. The legendary gacha is misleading - you only get increased odds for the shown legendary, not all of them (at least as of this post), and even then legendaries often have a huge starter cost tacked onto them, making teambuilding difficult early on. Once you build up your starter collection with a good few handfuls of shinies, and are cruising along in Endless vacuuming up vouchers, you can spend some on the other gachas for specific niches if you like (move gacha for egg moves, legendary gacha for legendaries), but for the most part the shiny gacha is where the money's at. Besides, the shiny gacha can hatch legendaries, too - so you're not missing out on legendaries by not hitting its specific gacha.
I Got a Few Shinies And Legendaries - What Now? Alright, so you've been cruising along, catching everything you see and building your starter pool like the rockstar rogue-like player you are. Keep building from here, but now you have more options - you can start bringing shinies on your Classic runs to improve the quality of item rewards you get at the end of each floor; you can maybe even bring a legendary/ultra beast along to have an easier time against the end boss and get that first win. At this point, if you haven't gotten that first win yet, now's the time to start knuckling down and making a serious go at it. Some general points of advice for Classic success I haven't yet covered:
- Early on, focus on 1-2 pokemon. Ignore the rest. Same advice as in Endless works here. This perhaps sounds counter-intuitive, but until at least floor 30-40, try your absolute hardest to only focus on leading with 1-2 pokemon (and that second one should ideally only be necessary to cover the weaknesses of the first). Your immediate early-game hurdles are the two rival battles at floors 8 and 25 (and maybe a Gym Leader battle at 20), and if you try to level everyone evenly you're going to find it harder to win. The Exp All and Exp Charms you get from rival battles and item rewards will more than catch your team up later even if you don't ever use them...so don't worry about them for now. Right now, you're creating the Ultimate Early Game Juggernaut(s) to get you through the initial hurdles.
- Be frugal with your money in the beginning. In Endless, it's common practice to reroll often to look for specific items - candy jars, rare candies, etc. That's because in that mode, once you get set up you have almost unlimited income. In Classic, your income is much more limited (usually hovering ~$100k or so by the mid to late floors), and you don't have the luxury of blindly rerolling for optimal results. The option to "save scum" your re-rolls exists, if you were willing - after winning a floor, check the rerolls, and if you don't like any of the offerings, refresh the page. This will "start the floor over", resetting the rewards and refunding your money. This isn't really necessary, though; in fact, I rarely reroll rewards at all until floors 180-200, and often settle with generic healing/item rewards. Why? You'll notice through your runs that in the midgame (floors 50-150, mainly), you'll accumulate quite a bit of gold; instead of using this gold for rerolls then, where it doesn't help much, you should instead wait for the later floors where you start to take on the toughest opponents of the run - the Elite 4 and Champion on floors 180-190, the final rival battle at 195, and the final boss at 200. Specifically, 180-190 is where you'll buy more healing items than perhaps the rest of the run combined (to keep your team healthy in between each Elite 4/Champion battle), and 190-200 are where you really want to look for things like X [stat] items to give your team that extra "oomph". Even the strongest legendaries fear a Butterfree packing +4 X Specials and an X Speed. Money saved early on lets you dump it into rerolls later where it matters most. (Don't ruin your run by being *too* frugal, though - if your party is near death early on, spend it. You can't spend it later on if you're dead.)
- Pickup is NOT necessary (but it is helpful). I see a lot of general advice in posts on pokerogue that tell new players to stack Pickup team members on Classic. This isn't necessary, or even arguably desirable past maybe the first 20-30 floors unless you're running a very strong carry that can solo all 200 floors (which is extremely unlikely, and far more difficult to boot). I've won Classic many times without using Pickup at all, and I can't say as I miss it when I don't have it. More importantly, you need to be cautious which items you're picking up - the end boss can and WILL use them against you, so things like Sitrus/Enigma/stat boosting berries that you picked up along your 200 floors suddenly seem a lot less useful when they're in enemy hands. That said, if you bring someone along with Pickup, be generous with handing out berries and other items to your party regularly using the "Transfer" option, so you can reap the benefits all throughout your 200 floors. Sitrus, Enigma, and the speed/attack boosting berries in particular are great in trainerival battles where you expect to take hits and want to revenge kill things. In the endgame against the final boss, though, perhaps load everything on a party member you hope never to bring out (such as your Pickup mon) so they don't get stolen. (Hot take: I prefer to use no berries at all in my Classic runs if possible, with one exception: Lum! Lum is amazing for healing status effects, especially when it feels like some trainers have all the hacks against you, and it doesn't feel bad if/when it gets stolen later.)
- The same goes for Pokerus. The biggest advantage to having pokerus is capping out your levels faster; even without it, in the later floors you'll still cap your levels by each final stage so long as you pick up a charm or two along the way (which you'll usually do, pokerus or not). It's also a decent help for that floor 11-25 range where you're at your weakest and that second rival challenge comes knocking. In Endless it's common practice to take a pokerus pokemon so your carry can keep up with the level gains of the floors until you get fully set up; in Classic, the scaling doesn't feel nearly that punishing. If you can bring a good pokerus pokemon, though, it's more helpful than not - just don't go out of your way for it or feel like it's "necessary".
- Understand how biomes work, at least somewhat. Many of them chain into each other naturally, which is part of where the memes come from regarding "endless water biomes" or similar. As you start to expand your starting 2-3 into a full 6, know what biomes you need to look for and what to avoid. This is part of why the Map is one of my favorite item rewards to pick early on - it lets you target farm the remaining members of your team much easier, and towards the last 50-80 floors you can choose the easier ones to coast through while you finish building your team. In particular, routes you need to keep in mind:
- You always start in "Town" and move into "Plains"; this is 100% guaranteed in every Classic run. This means the first 20 floors are always weighted heavily to normal- and grass-types. When building your starting team, it's helpful to keep this in mind - for instance, picking up things strong against these two types (shoutout to Flamigo/Hawlucha!) and maybe not bringing a grass type knowing that you're likely to catch one early on if you're desperate for filler.
- "Metropolis" vs. "Lake" vs. "Grass": Moving out of Plains, these are your three options available if you have the Map by now. The biome you leave Plains for is the biggest observation you can make for your run - it will dictate how you form the rest of your team as you progress into the midgame. If you get diverted to Lake, but need an Electric-type (for instance), you need to find a way to get the map to divert to "Construction Site" or loop back to Plains, or you may be hard pressed to find an Electric-type at all in your entire run. The same goes for Fairy- and Steel-types - "Fairy Cave", the biome with the largest quantity of fairy types, is only accessible through "Meadows", which requires you to go through the forest biomes first. If you're not looking like you're going through those areas, you'll need to be less picky about what fairy-types you come across if you hope to snag one. (I recommend visiting the wiki for their nice little flowchart diagram if you ever want a more nuanced look into each path and where they can potentially lead, along with what spawns in each.)
- Build a well-rounded team. Building mono-type teams is cute, but ultimately extra work. Focus on coverage and being able to handle anything that comes along - remember, the last floors feature a variety of Elite 4 members and the Champion, all of which will require a varied approach on what types of Pokemon to bring for best results. By floor 100, you should either have most of your team set or a plan to fill the rest out by the time you reach ~170. By 180 it's likely too late (with the exception of maybe getting a last Mushroom or TM to fill out a moveset).

- Specify that it is a 'Showcase' post by starting their post with [Showcase] The only equipment restriction is that at least one piece of Canon equipment must have been used (body and/or lens).
- The title must specify the showcase (for example, [Showcase] total solar eclipse)
- Please include the rest of the image metadata (shutter speed, aperture, ISO, camera body) in the title, image caption, or comments.

2024.05.14 17:23 joe151904 Got a Bravia 7 on impulse for cheap - what do?
Currently shopping for a home theatre.
I was visiting a family friend at a local retailer here in Australia and I mistakenly requested a BRAVIA 7 (K75XR70) in the 75 inch model instead of the A95L (dumb mistake I know).
It retails here in Australia for $4495 AUD (2,978.25 USD) and my family friend provided a discount down to roughly 1,978.25 USD including shipping and installation.
Is a BRAVIA 7 still good value for what I paid?
I was hoping to get QLED or OLED tv but given the massive discount I got, I didn't want to embarrass my family friend and ask to return it.
I don't need 144hz for gaming and the space won't be subject to any harsh light either. As long as the Bravia 7 isn't complete rubbish, I'll keep it!

2024.05.14 17:15 East_Aspect_1296 "Order Inquiry" likely scams
So we run an online store via Shopify, Google, others. We're getting these "too good to be true" emails asking us for bulk orders with certain caveats (private shipper, ACH, payment methods)... I would be shocked if these were legitimate requests, but was wondering what their end game is? Stealing the merchandise? Scamming money? Anyone know? A few examples:
Subject: Order Inquiry ....................!!!
Hello ,
I would like to make an order. We have a retail store in Bahamas.
- Will you accept pickup by a private shipper?
- Do you accept American credit card visa or a mastercard?
- Can you send me your price sheet to view the available product? Kindly get back to me ASAP.
Regards.
Subject: Order Inquiry
I am glad to introduce ourselves as a retail store in Puerto Rico, I would like to purchase some products for my business.
Do you ship to Puerto Rico or allow pick up via freight forwarders?
Please send me your updated price list and let me know if you accept prepayment via US credit card.
Awaiting your response.
With gratitude, submitted by

2024.05.14 17:03 secretsocietyofsalt Need help wording how to tell my son that his trans sister needs me more right now.
I'm sharing here because I feel the listener base to this podcast might have some good points for me. Y'all have been helpful before. TYIA.
Some context: My daughter (mtf16) has been out to the family for around 2 1/2 years now (I've known something was different about her since she was a toddler). My husband and son (18) don't accept her. I'm also in a very red town in a very red state that is very anti-trans (so bad that an online mob doxxed a trans girl nearby a few months ago and threatened her, her family, and her place of employment with bomb and death threats). This is on top of teachers deliberately misgendering and dead-naming because they don't have to respect trans students. She doesn't really get outright bullied, but snide slurs and comments are made randomly a few times a week. She dresses neutral, so as not to draw attention, she sticks with her small group of friends, and generally keeps her head down because being herself at school, home, anywhere, just gets met with hate and disgust.
She's in therapy, but there's only so much that can be done as long as she keeps being forced to hide herself. There are no rights or protections for her, and I see this weighing heavily on her. She has lost interest in most things she used to love, rarely smiles anymore, and just doesn't care about passing school or even brushing her teeth. She's on the max dose of meds for severe depression.
My husband's solution is to ignore it. Our "son" has a mental illness is all. God made us with penises and vaginas for a reason, and if we ignore it, maybe it will go away.
I've tried giving him the science behind being trans. I've tried to give him multiple resources-scientific, religious, anecdotal (this is an experience as a trans child stuff)- but he refuses to look at any of it and claims the Bible is all he needs. We've even been to couple's therapy.
To keep from going into more detail, I'll just say that I realized some months ago what I needed to do: I was going to have to leave the state with my child. She won't make it to adulthood if I don't.
Now to my son (18). He graduates from high school this week. He was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder around 10/11 years old. His major difficulty is disseminating information. If something requires multiple steps, he can't remember or take in all the steps at one time. He also has some other typical signs of ASD like anxiety, especially when he's doing something new or has a change in routine.
And he doesn't accept that his sibling is trans either. Just like his father, he repeats the religious talking points. We have a good relationship otherwise. But if I try to provide information on any subject he disagrees with, he just dismisses it with religious or political talking points that he's heard from others, mainly his dad and older half-brother. He's been dismissive and disrespectful of me as well. I didn't realize until recently that it is the same way my husband treats me. It's the passing down of the fucking patriarchy. My husband didn't have much of a hand in raising him through the hard stuff (discipline, for one; his dad never disciplined and wouldn't back me up, and instead would treat me as if my discipline of my child was a sibling rivalry). But apparently just seeing our relationship in motion convinced my son that's how things should be.
I feel like I failed my son. I've tried to tell him that his attitude and outlook will hurt his future relationships (they have already had an effect on some recent ladies he's dated). And I don't think he gets that his attitude about trans people will (and probably already has) put a rift between him and his sister. I know they love each other and despite his misgendering, they laugh together and still game together. But when my daughter decides she doesn't want to put up with the disrespect anymore, that will put an end to any reconciliation.
At this point, with his attitude, taking him with us isn't an option. My daughter needs to feel open and safe in order to flourish and reach her full potential. I want to see her love life again, and that can't include anyone in the household who invalidates her existence.
When I go, I know my husband will likely bad-mouth me. I know can't control what my son thinks and feels, and he will probably be hurt that he can't go with us and/or that I won't be close by. I apparently am not very good at persuasion and need some help with how to word that I'm leaving to save his sister's life. I want him to know that I love him and will talk with him anytime, but I feel like he should get a footing in the world without me for a while. At the same time, he'll be hearing the anti-trans, ultra-conservative crap from his dad and brother. I don't want to lose him. My heart has already been through hell.
What do I need to say to him to show him that if there is a God, God doesn't give two fiddly fucks about genitals and that just because he doesn't understand something, doesn't mean he can't be respectful and supportive. How do I tell him that I'm not "leaving him," I'm leaving to save my daughter's life? I want him to understand the gravity of the situation, and that dysphoria is not a "mental illness." It relays who a trans person really is. I'm at a loss because not only is my 20-year marriage ending from a man I realized I never really knew, but that I also have to leave my home, career, family, and even my dog. It's hurting me worse though that I have to leave my son behind. Yes , he's technically an adult, but he still needs help navigating his new post-high school world. We've never spent more than a few days apart since he was born.
I'm decent at writing, but suck at verbal articulation. Help me please.
TLDR: Sorry, can't make this shorter without all the info and context. Scroll on if you're a bigot or not interested. Thanks. ✌️

2024.05.14 16:56 Tiny-Chia-Seed How to Deal Alone
For those persevering through aging, hormonal fluctuations, stress alone how do you do it? I feel so silly asking this because I could do a PhD on the subject of persevering solo, but these past couple of weeks have been so difficult. Not sure what exactly messed me up like this. Haven’t feel this way in a really long time—horribly hormonal, crying nonstop over absolutely fucking nothing. I just feel suffocated all the time. I get chills. Horrible migraine. My vision changed and my eyes become sensitive to light. Fibromyalgia flare ups. I can tolerate all of that but that sense of dread that creeps up on me. I don’t know how to deal with it. Like there’s zero motivation. I don’t feel there’s any sense to doing anything. I dragged myself out of bed this morning feeling the worst. Pushed myself to do a project. Tried cooking last night. It’s just so hard. I have to take care of my senior relatives and I feel so lousy. A few weeks ago I completely crashed and I couldn’t ask them for help. I felt terrible. I had to drag myself to the emergency room on my own. I’m terrified all the time. It feels exactly like I’m getting my period any minute now but I’m still due for another week. I did blood tests and things are normal. I don’t know why I’m so messed up like this.
I’m curious how do you do it on your own? When I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t sleep, shaking, feeling overall dread, worried, just feeling suffocated— I dunno what to do. I used to rely on books, games, shows to keep me mentally engaged and move through life, but lately none of this works and I’m scared.
I know I’ll be fine. I just needed to talk to other women going through this. Just wanna feel less alone.
Is this normal in your 40s? I’m 42. My hormones work came out ok but I’m just not feeling right at all.

2024.05.14 16:48 Loud_Skirt_7421 What's my type?
I am new to this mbti and enneagram stuff, but I did look into cognitive functions a bit but I still am not sure which fit me, it might be because I am still pretty new. This is mostly a hobby for when I am bored and want to think, because I like to play with outside systems like this.
• How old are you? What's your gender? Give us a general description of yourself.
I am 16 years old, male , just your average quiet teenager that sucks at introspecting and wants to look cool to others yet does nothing to impress others (other than looks)
that sounded oddly specific.,.....
whatever
• Is there a medical diagnosis that may impact your mental stability somehow?
not really, not that I know of..
• Describe your upbringing. Did it have any kind of religious or structured influence? How did you respond to it?
I grew up in a poor family (duh), then just like your average adult couple they divorce, usually I'd stay a lot with my mother and she would teach me about morals which I now see some as stupid but either way I kind of "took" her morals and my dad's too. Kind of had to grew up early and take care of my smaller brother by substituting being a dad , and I have a lot of influence over my brother , and we would switch places a lot but the only comfort I had was in games, interacting with others on the games ,making fun of others and overall having a good time being accepted
• What do you do as a job or as a career (if you have one)? Do you like it? Why or why not?
At the moment I have no job, I do karate and I could teach others but I don't have the stuff necessary like: a place to train others, I am not at the highest level yet, customers and this is mostly the main things.
But I would really like to continue on this path of gym and karate since I already have an edge and kind of be under someone's wing to help me
• If you had to spend an entire weekend by yourself, how would you feel? Would you feel lonely or refreshed?
Mostly depends, on my mood sometimes I despise being alone and feel miserable being alone with my thoughts(and is mostly why I spend a lot of time on my computer despite not wanting to do so) or if the people in my circle kind of make me have a bad time then I would want to withdraw and get my energy back , usually I am very loud after I get comfortable with the other person and know what they are capable of
• What kinds of activities do you prefer? Do you like, and are you good at sports? Do you enjoy any other outdoor or indoor activities?
Like I said above I do Karate , I recently reached the brown belt ( YIPPPIE me) and me and the outdoors have a bad history but as of now I prefer to have a balance of both but mostly I would like to focus on real life things, especially when it comes to careers
• How curious are you? Do you have more ideas then you can execute? What are your curiosities about? What are your ideas about - is it environmental or conceptual, and can you please elaborate?
I am not too curious of stuff that is deep , it makes me feel miserable, but usually I get random questions sometimes and it makes me search , but not too deep into it just enough to have the idea cause I see no point in diving deeper. Usually when I even get these questions is from either talking out loud or just looking around me so it's mostly environmental (I think not too sure of this)
• Would you enjoy taking on a leadership position? Do you think you would be good at it? What would your leadership style be?
The only time I like leading is when I have knowledge and know I am the best to do it, if someone else is better then I'll let them do their thing but usually I wouldn't fully obey them I would kind of give some counter-arguments if there is room for some.
Even when I lead, others do listen to me and usually I am confident in doing it, kind of like that one quote of Sun Tzu:" Go to war only if you know you will win" , which my friend told me recently.
As for the style not too sure what it would really reference, but I would say I think of people as cogs in the machine
• Are you coordinated? Why do you feel as if you are or are not? Do you enjoy working with your hands in some form? Describe your activity?
Not too sure what to say on the "coordination" part but I for sure love working with my hands, especially when I cook for myself or others, and like I already mentioned I do karate so of course I like practicing with my hands improving my technique
• Are you artistic? If yes, describe your art? If you are not particular artistic but can appreciate art please likewise describe what forums of art you enjoy. Please explain your answer.
no I am not artistic at all , I don't really look into it at all since I don't consider it worthwhile but as a kid I did like drawing cause I was good at it and I got recognition for my drawings from other classmates and that would fuel me to make me like drawing cause the teacher liked it, others too and yeah.. Untill it kind of stopped receving the feedback and such
• What's your opinion about the past, present, and future? How do you deal with them?
I don't like to think of the past too much , especially when I think of myself, it's mostly negative things but I try to see the bright side of what I've achieved and such, because I wasn't healthy (even now I feel like I am not healthy but it's clearly better), I used to be chubby kind of fat , and before getting into karate I did handball where we trained physical condition and other things , and we had to do sit ups but due to me being fat I couldn't and others looked at me and started joking even the trainer and because of that I quit..
The present could be good but I am indifferent towards it I don't really work towards anything specific I like to remain a little reactive and eventually get help from others into shaping my future life.
And like I said I try to remain reactive of the present, I don't like planning too far ahead because it could be too early to plan and there might be more to do
• How do you act when others request your help to do something (anything)? If you would decide to help them, why would you do so?
I don't get asked for help frequently but it's either I help the person because I see they are struggling or they asked me and it goes two ways: 1. I agree and do the job or 2. I tell them "no" and go back to what I was doing (eventually feeling guilty I didn't help but I don't like being used for other's advantage)
• Do you need logical consistency in your life?
Yeah , it's pretty important people shouldn't only run on feelings but kind of fit some systems into some kind of framework, not really think about it 24/7, but make sense of it that is how I like to do it.
Even with this system of cognitive functions I try to understand it but sometimes it's a bit too abstract, I prefer more practical examples to fully understand the idea behind it
• How important is efficiency and productivity to you?
Not too much but not too less, usually I prefer it to not be feeling sad that I am "closed off somewhere" and not doing something, isolated from the world , especially with no computer atleast to go on the internet and joke around and chill with others(but of on a common task or else I will mind my business).
But I strive to be efficient in what I do over time , even if it's for a game that is pointless
• Do you control others, even if indirectly? How and why do you do that?
Simply no, I never was able to do this exactly , well maybe after I get to know the person a bit and see what they could do.... but I am not.
Also just read what controlling others mean , and I could see myself taking charge and just doing everything myself....
But I still feel like I don't, but I can see how I could, but I won't because I don't have the skill and it wouldn't be good
• What are your hobbies? Why do you like them?
Well probably just ,out of boredoom, playing games but not a wide variety which gets boring quick but familiarity bias is a thing.. and doing karate which energizes me almost everytime and anytime even if I don't feel like it and force myself. I just like when it goes well with others it and being liked by others, energizes me
• What is your learning style? What kind of learning environments do you struggle with most? Why do you like/struggle with these learning styles? Do you prefer classes involving memorization, logic, creativity, or your physical senses?
To be honest I didn't really pay attention to how I learn I just learn to get good grades in school and make it, yeah not too much here but I struggle with things that don't really add up to me or I don't see the logic behind
Usually I don't need explanations from the teacher I kind of tend to see the logic behind everything mostly without asking much information since some subjects have systems that are easily to juggle with(like math but I sometimes struggle with calculating in my head)
• How good are you at strategizing? Do you easily break up projects into manageable tasks? Or do you have a tendency to wing projects and improvise as you go?
I try to simplify strategizing, yes having a plan in depth is good but people for sure won't like if you are gonna stick to one rigid plan , which is why you have to make it kind of like a team thing even if I do make a rigid plan I try to make it sound simple and to the point based of data that others and I know, even making decision off the data my group knows
• What are your aspirations in life, professionally and personally?
Probably to feel happy I achieved something and doing something in the outside world, eventually influencing others
• What are your fears? What makes you uncomfortable? What do you hate? Why?
Mostly personal stuff , and emotional situations, my emotional inteligence is bad and I am bad at emotions too, atleast handling the emotions of others, but sometimes I try to let them vent to me and help them a bit and try to be empathetic even tho I don't show it too much, mostly I show it through acting tho
• What do the "highs" in your life look like?
Positive outlook on life, relationships are well but I don't worry about them too much unless there is an obvious problem and really liking to hang around others, and especially having something going on for myself
• What do the "lows" in your life look like?
the first thing that comes to my mind is: withrdawn, melancholy and just starting to critique everyone in my head but not really telling them, yeah sometimes I may start bluntly joking about other's and stuff and even situtations, I try to poke fun and when it kind of fails I feel like withdrawing from others since it doesn't work Melancholy litteraly makes me feel miserable about everything, mostly makes me feel depressed. I do tend to feel it often but I try to supress it trough doing things, like playing on the computer , youtube and such (everyone does this to some extent)
• How attached are you to reality? Do you daydream often, or do you pay attention to what's around you? If you do daydream, are you aware of your surroundings while you do so?
I find myself daydreaming when bored and not really anything is going on but I do tend to be mindful of what others do in case they try to harm me...
But even if I daydream it's mostly about what everything could have been, kind of like what I could have done or what I could do and how it would end up/ ended up, but it does happen quite a lot
• Imagine you are alone in a blank, empty room. There is nothing for you to do and no one to talk to. What do you think about?
Not too sure if I would ever get there but thinking out loud here so , probably about some random stuff in my head unrelated to my situations untill one thought hits close to home and I go into some deeper stuff , and usually when I get deeper into things I tend to feel miserable, my friend (who is INTJ btw) said that my negative depressing thoughts that I hate match the thinking of the philosophy of "Nihilism" which is kind of true....
• How long do you take to make an important decision? And do you change your mind once you've made it?
I try and not stay too long on it but sometimes I might run back and forth if I am not too sure, but I try to stay decisive , because being indecisive a lot is bad..
• How long do you take to process your emotions? How important are emotions in your life?
I kind of look down on emotions , yes I feel them but I just tend to ignore and repress them sometimes, but I vent to closer friends from time to time, but this is mostly because my parents would misinterpret my emotions...
My mom would just over moralify everything and bring it to a stupid extreme which is unrelated..
and My dad would just make fun of them , but sometimes he would give me spot on answers which are exactly what I need
• Do you ever catch yourself agreeing with others just to appease them and keep the conversation going? How often? Why?
Not really , even if I do it's in a way to shut off the conversation, because I don't like having conversation with no point
• Do you break rules often? Do you think authority should be challenged, or that they know better? If you do break rules, why?
I don't really mind rules , but I don't pay attention to them too much(because no need to worry if you don't go out of your way to try something that could count as "breaking the rules") mostly to the general ones which could punish you very harshly but overtime they could be exploited and I do that when I am confident I won't be caught or it won't punish me
I also took the mbti test from Michael Caloz site (I saw people doing this one a lot so I figured I might give it a try for this post :D)
statistics of functions the top result (followed by ESTP and then ESTJ, in that order) I saw other posts also mentioning this, and I figured I would too I took this test a bit rushed cause I needed to do something..

2024.05.14 16:46 RealRockaRolla How Important is Series Lore to You?
As TOTK has just celebrated its 1-year anniversary, there have been a lot of reviews, retrospectives, and discussions on the game and how it holds up. One criticism that has existed almost from the very beginning is the series' supposed disconnect from Zelda lore and history. Theorizing is obviously a very big part of the Zelda community, particularly among content creators on YouTube. It seems that a lot of folks were either let down because the game either didn't expand on existing lore or didn't do enough to explain the lore that was established (i.e. the Zonai). Some have even said it tarnishes and disrespects the legacy of what came before.
For me personally, the series' lore and history has always been fascinating but never the end all be all. Don't get me wrong, I really like a good deal of the series' stories. I used to love watching theory videos of how time travel works in OOT and how each game fits into a supposed timeline. When Hyrule Historia came out, I treated it as the ultimate Zelda bible. But as time has gone on, I've understood that the timeline is messy, full of inconsistencies, and subject to at least a few retcons. Certain games, even if they have a place in a timeline, also seemingly exist in their own universe and are never mentioned elsewhere (particularly the Four Sword games). To put it in further perspective, I think Wind Waker has the best story of any Zelda game but it's personally not even a top 5 Zelda game for me (I still love it though). I've always put more emphasis on gameplay, mechanics, exploration, and dungeons.
So for all the talk of how it was lazy there wasn't a better explanation for why the Sheikah technology is gone or what happened to the Triforce, I find myself wondering if it really matters? Should a Zelda game be judged on how it connects to previous history? Can it be judged on its own merits? I've always felt the biggest flaws of TOTK's story were logic gaps in learning Zelda is the light dragon and not telling anyone or the ending being too deus ex machina.
However, please don't take this post as a criticism if you consider lore to be a very important part of the series. What matters to me may not matter to you and vice-versa, and that's totally OK. If you were disappointed by TOTK's lore implications or lack thereof, I get it. I'm just genuinely curious as to what others think.

2024.05.14 16:26 Key-Jacket2890 Exploring the Pros and Cons of AI Essay Writers
As a student navigating the ever-evolving landscape of academia, I've often found myself overwhelmed by the sheer volume of essays and assignments that pile up on my desk. It's during these moments of academic stress that I've turned to innovative solutions, one of which is the utilization of AI essay writers. In this article, I'll delve into the advantages and disadvantages of employing such technology, drawing from my own experiences and research.
First and foremost, the primary allure of AI essay writers is their ability to streamline the writing process. These programs are equipped with advanced algorithms capable of generating coherent and well-structured essays on a variety of topics in a matter of minutes. This can be a game-changer for students facing tight deadlines or struggling to articulate their thoughts effectively.
Furthermore, AI essay writers can serve as invaluable learning tools. By analyzing the essays produced by these programs, students can gain insights into effective writing techniques, formatting styles, and even subject matter expertise. It's akin to having a virtual writing mentor at your disposal, offering guidance and constructive feedback whenever needed.
Another notable advantage of AI essay writers is their potential to reduce academic pressure. For students juggling multiple responsibilities, such as part-time jobs or extracurricular activities, the ability to offload some of the writing workload to AI can alleviate stress and free up valuable time for other pursuits.
However, it's essential to acknowledge the limitations and potential drawbacks of relying too heavily on AI essay writers. One significant concern is the risk of plagiarism. While these programs are designed to generate original content, there's always a chance that the output could resemble existing material, leading to accusations of academic dishonesty.
Moreover, there's a danger of dependency on AI essay writers inhibiting students' own writing development. Writing is a skill that improves with practice, and by bypassing the effort required to craft essays manually, students may miss out on valuable learning opportunities.
Additionally, there's the issue of cost. While some AI essay writing services may offer free or low-cost options, others come with subscription fees or pay-per-use pricing models, which can quickly add up for budget-conscious students.
In conclusion, the decision to use an AI essay writer is a personal one, contingent on individual circumstances and preferences. While these tools undeniably offer convenience, efficiency, and potential learning benefits, they also pose risks such as plagiarism, stunted writing growth, and financial investment. As with any academic resource, it's crucial to approach AI essay writers with caution and use them judiciously, supplementing rather than replacing traditional writing practices.
For those considering utilizing such services, I would recommend exploring reputable platforms like
SharkWriter.ai, which prioritize quality, originality, and user satisfaction. However, I urge fellow students to exercise diligence, maintain academic integrity, and view AI essay writers as supplements rather than substitutes for their own writing efforts.

2024.05.14 15:55 Automatic_Sea_4729 Omen and Cypher face reveal?
Theres tons of fanarts about it but i was always curious what they actually look like.
It is known that omen was a human before and used as a test subject in an experiment with viper which went horribly wrong and turned him into a shadow with loss of all his memory. Viper seems to be aware of his past self and in a voiceline she implies that the enemy omen might know of his 'secrets'. That's why he wants to kill enemy omen to he can recover his memories from him and return to his natural state
For cypher, he is an information broker that thrives on keeping secrets and also want his identity hidden. But it is known he's had a very traumatic past where his family, his wife and kid especially was possibly killed. But he also says he cannot show his face to his family which indicates he possibly had a major disfiguring of his face in the traumatic incident (?) that's why he wears a mask to keep it hidden or that he is ashamed of the secretive work he's doing.
So yeah I agree the games been out for 4 years now and we have crumbs for lore i would love for riot to reveal more lore it would be super interesting and cool and adds depth to the agents

2024.05.14 15:55 Aware-Gap8804 In Tier-2 CSE, Got 8 'F'(Back) in 1st Year, Dean said to reconsider your decision or I will not survive enough to get degree (if i can't graduate in 6 years). Feels like it's end, I don't have the will to even write known answers in exams, Didn't tell my parents yet. What to do?
I am currently in Tier-2 CSE, I have total 8 'F' Grade, I have no will to even sit and study for 1 hour, I don't know why i am doing like this, i feels like i am very very exhausted. All this 1 year I was like,
I just wakeup, use phone in class, attend labs (didn't try to understand anything just did watching what everyone is doing, no understanding), come to hostel browse internet, game or reels or youtube, then sleep.
I didn't even studied anything during examination,I don't know why, I just can't understand what is happening to me, my mind already gave up, i now feels like i can't even pass anything no matter how much i studied.
In one of the end sem exam of 2nd sem, I knew answer of a question but i didn't have the will to write it on paper, and I didn't write it. In all the exams i just sit, look into the question paper, look into board.
Each paper can only get cleared in parallel, like 1st sem subjects can only be cleared in 3rd, 5th & 7th sem or summer term. And i can get take maximum 1 subjects in 1 term. If i am not limited to take limited cource.
Dean said, from the next sem, my credit will be get reduced to only 4 cources until i reach CG of 5. then after that i have to clear those cources which get removed due to credit limit.
I am thinking that i don't have any intrest left in any of these stuffs, i just want to leave it
I feels all the money is wasted now. I was good till 10th, average in 12th (48k in mains),Sometimes i feels like i should just get a basic job which i can get now(if).
I am going to tell my parents (fat bhut rhi h)that i have failed and now i will discontinue my studies and and will ask if i can join my their business.
Have anyone face similar issue, How did you face this?

2024.05.14 15:51 Brau87 LE loot is better than you think.
Sorry in advance. This is on mobile and ill probably ramble a bit.
I have seen a few posts and several content creators mention that LE loot isnt exciting. while excitement in a game is subjective i hope i can explain why LE loot has the unique characteristic of not just being BIS but BIG.
Most of these issues seem to come from false expectations. So im going to try and bring those in a bit.
First we have corruption. Get 1000+ corruption out of your head because EHG has stated they dont want it that high. If your build is achieving this its either overtuned or broken. It will be nerfed.
Second we have Uniques with LP. I have been sent dozens of builds with a 4LP Omnis or Wings of Argentus...etc. Ive talked to many players banging their had against the wall trying to farm these. I definitely understand thinking loot drops arent exciting when you are expecting too much. Just getting an Omnis is insane. A 1LP Omnis should have you jumping.
Realistic build unique LP expectations should be closer to this. Common (2-3), rare (1-2), very rare(1) Extremely Rare (holy crap you got an extremely rare item!!!!) Anything above these numbers is god teir.
Finally lets talk about crafting and BIG. Crafting is what makes your drops so exciting. Getting the correct base with the exalted affixes you want not only has makes your character stronger but its most likley unique to you. Your best in slot can actually be the best in game. Thats pretty exciting if you ask me. Remember that if an item has the affixes you want and is T20+ its a solid item.
If you're getting the drops and bricking them often there are some good guides out there for crafting. Raxxanterax and AaronActionRPG have easy to understand guides on youtube.
Anyways thanks for listening to me ramble.
TLDR: loot in LE is exciting because of every items uniqueness. Have realistic expectations for your character and your loot. If youre expecting a 4LP every time loot will definitely disappoint.

2024.05.14 15:51 Gidon_147 [FO4] Every single quest mod is still held back by the speaking protagonist and I have a suggestion to solve this
Before I continue, yeah this is gonna be a subjective ramble about how I think I would design a quest mod, were I any good at writing or coding. I've just been thinking and want to share my thoughts on this. You can absolutely just count this as a dumb rant if you want, I don't mind.
TL;DR only voice the NPCs, not the main protagonist and stop recycling the existing dialogue just for the sake of voicing the protagonist.
So, there is one thing I like and one thing I dislike about the speaking protagonist in FO4: - I like how Nora/Nate comments on environmental things, has a voice in general, lets out a little "Yes..!" after succeeding a lockpick or hack, basically everything they say OUTSIDE of actual character interactions. For me, they bring a lot to the table for giving my character some personality and helps me immerse myself.
- I REALLY DON'T like the way the Protags voice dictates the dialogue system between people in the entire game, Mods included. Because Nora's/Nates Voice actor basically had to do the job of every other voice actor in the game combined, I feel that is one of the bigger reasons why we got only 4 options, and most of these options are some version of "Yes", "No", Why" or "Maybe".
This not only limits how good the Story and Dialogue, including the decisions you can make in the base game, can be, but the limitations also apply FULLY to every quest mod ever made, no matter how well it is written. Take for example Sim Settlements 2. I'm taking that as an example because it's the most recent one I have played and it has excellent voice acting and writing.
The difference between quality of the depth of character of NPCs vs. the protagonist is absolutely jarring, and the reason for that is because the writing is SO good that the nature of Noras/Nates recycled dialogue gets even moreso obvious. Whenever I participate in any dialogue in this mod, I am getting reminded every single time that the implementation of the MCs voice lines makes everything said by them so lackluster. I mean, the NPCs even acknowledge and tell you outright that "If you realize it or not, you are kind of the leader around here", which is a very amazing moment that surpasses anything else in vanilla FO4, but at the same time I feel like my character is a leader like Forrest Gump, running down the commonwealth, minding their own business and everybody who follows them just makes their own decisions all the time after they interpret something meaningless I say to them as some stroke of absolute genius. Because the actual context between what I say and what they say is mostly very minimal and insubstantial.
No matter how much effort and energy is put into any quest mod for FO4, they will always have to build around that limited set of basic recycled things to be said by the protagonist. Never will they actually be able to meaningfully interact with anybody in the game, and it's just by nature of the protagonist being voiced. There are SO MANY amazing Quest mods with amazing Voice acting for New Vegas, and none of those have that problem, simply because the Main Character is not voiced.
So how would I do it if I had any skills in modding? I would work around the
Silent Protagonist mod, keep the option of having the Protagonist say the little environmental things, but completely ignore the limitation of Nora/Nate voice acting and just not voice them at all. Suddenly, my freedom in designing the dialogue skyrockets. I can make Nora/Nate say anything I want, and I can provide options like in FO3 or NV where the player can ACTUALLY make meaningful decisions, play good/evil/neutral, or basically become a character as fleshed out as any other character in my quest mod. Only the NPCs would have voice lines. I could even make the NPCs refer to something important I said in the past, later in the game. It would not only open up a huge potential of more complexity for MY character, but for everyone else as well.
Yeah, that's basically my Idea. Sorry if it's underwhelming and that I can't contribute more than a suggestion, as I'm neither a writer, nor a voice actor nor a coder. But I do honestly think that this would be the solution for FO4 Quest mods, and I would like if modding went into that direction someday. I'm very sure people would quickly get used to a non-voiced protagonist if that would become the standard with quest mods. I think it would also happen quite fast, because the difference in quality would be obvious the moment a big, high quality quest mod comes out that just ignores the limitation of recycling already used protagonist voice lines.
Thank you for your patience and I would like to hear what you think about this.
