2024 Heritage Zoo's Who
2024.05.07 22:45 paul_123 2024 Heritage Zoo's Who
Hello everyone, greetings from North of the border! I've recently gotten back into the card collecting hobby after a nearly 10 year hiatus and am looking to try and get all the 1975 TOPPS ZOO'S WHO cards from HERITAGE 2024.
My main motivation for this is my brother. He absolutely loves animals and card collecting (non-sports cards that is, dude has never watched a baseball game in his life). I figure this set would be a perfect birthday gift for him as it's got some of his favorite animals.
Rather than going to ebay or break the bank with buying boxes I figured to try and see what you all got, I'd like to become an active member of this sub in the future so if this kind of post isn't allowed just lmk :)
My preference would be to deal with those in Canada that have multiple from the set (just makes shipping and dollar values easier) but I'm open to anything! Paypal G&S is also my payment preference and I'm located in Canada so if that's a deal breaker for anyone just be aware.
I'll be trying to get all 20 of these cards by August so hope to hear from some of you!
EDIT - Currently have deals lined up for the following 75Z-1 - Detroit Tigers - Tiger 75Z-2 - Tampa Bay Rays - Sting Ray 75Z-4 - St. Louis Cardinals - Cardinal 75Z-4 - St. Louis Cardinals - Cardinal (Red Parallel) 75Z-6 - Miami Marlins - Marlin 75Z-7 - Chicago Cubs - Cub 75Z-9 - Pete Alonso - Polar Bear 75Z-10 - Jeff McNeil - Flying Squirrel 75Z-10 - Jeff McNeil - Flying Squirrel (Blue Parallel) 75Z-11 - Baby Giraffe - Brandon Belt 75Z-12 - Catfish - Catfish Hunter 75Z-13 - Rich Goosage - Goose 75Z-16 - Ryne Sandberg - Rhino 75Z-18 - Gator - Ron Guidry 75Z-19 - Orlando Cepeda - Baby Bull 75Z-20 - Big Cat - Andres Galarraga

2024.04.10 02:49 Dramatic-Instance-31 Question: Rent the RF 100-500 or buy the RF 100-400?
Hi all,
I am an amateur photographer that is getting ready to go to Africa (specifically South Africa, Namibia, and Kenya) on vacation for a month. Part of the vacation will be spent doing touristy things (e.g., touring Cape Town, visiting the winelands, seeing Namibian desert dunes, staying at Giraffe Manor, etc.) while the other part will be on safari. Given the nature of the trip, I felt it was worth upgrading my gear. As a result, I just bought an R6 and the RF 24-240 lens so that I have a good all purpose lens to use when doing the touristy things (plus for taking pictures of the family). However, I recognize that 240mm isn't going to cut it on safari (or when seeing the penguin colony in South Africa). As a result, I am also in the market for a telephoto lens and am deciding between the RF 100-500 and the RF 100-400 (primarily to shoot medium/large mammals/reptiles, but possibly some birds and smaller animals). Though I am fully aware that the 100-500 is objectively superior in terms of image quality and reach, the $2,500 price tag is too rich for my blood so if I did go with that lens, I would rent it. However, renting it for the entire time that I am in Africa would cost me $350, which is almost 2/3 the price of a used 100-400. For this reason, I am wondering if it would be better for me to just buy the 100-400. Off the top of my head, these are the considerations I am weighing:
- As an amateur, will I be able to take advantage of the superior quality of the 100-500 (particularly given that I can buy the 100-400 before the trip and practice with it but not do the same with the 100-500 without increasing the rental cost even further)?
- Will I regret not having the additional 100mm of focal length and 1/3 of a stop?
- Is it better for me to burn several hundred dollars to rent a superior lens or sink that money into buying an inferior (but still good) lens now and retaining the possibility of selling/trading it in later if I decide that owning the superior lens is worthwhile?
- Will lugging around and shooting the 100-500 (which is more than twice the size of the 100-400) on safari be more trouble than it is worth?
- I can see myself doing more nature/wildlife photography in the near future, but that will likely be on trips to places like Yosemite and Puerto Vallarta/Mazatlan where I will likely be hiking/walking around a lot more to get shots (rather than sitting in a safari truck driven by trained guides). In light of that, does it make more sense for me to buy the much lightemore compact 100-400 to use on this trip and the future trips or save $200 by renting the 100-500 and use my 24-240 on future trips?
- Will renting the 100-500 spoil me for my fututre trips, thereby pushing me to continue burning $$$ on renting it for future trips instead of saving up/trading in a cheaper lens if I do get more into nature/wildlife photography?
I totally understand that my question is about as subjective as it gets, but any advice from those more knowledgeable than I am would be greatly appreciated. I also would love to hear any other considerations that might be missing from the ones I have listed. Thanks so much!

2024.03.19 19:44 dudesekp Dollar Store Find
| *** UPDATE 03/21/2022 *** They do taste like Dr. Pepper. And I like them so much went back and bought 2 more packages to go with the Party Cake Peeps. You clutch the dollar store receipt in your sweaty hand, your heart pounding like a bass line in a Dr. Pepper commercial. The prophecy is true! The elders spoke of these mythical beasts, Dr Pepper Peeps, hailing from a lineage stretching back to the dawn of time (well, 1885 at least). Here they are, nestled amongst knock-off bunny ears and discount plastic grass, like a unicorn grazing in a landfill. But fear not, intrepid explorer! You will be the first to document this elusive candy cryptid. Except... they're not what the legends described. These Dr Pepper Peeps aren't majestic, sugar-coated steeds. They're more like deflated pool floats cast in hues of questionable red and black. Still, the thrill of the hunt compels you. You grab a net fashioned from a stray shopping bag and a coat hanger (because who goes to the Dollar Tree without a coat hanger?). With the grace of a baby giraffe on roller skates, you lunge. The net snags. Victory! But... oh no. The Dr. Pepper Peep emits a pathetic chirp, the sound of a dying soda fountain. Maybe the legends were a bit off on the capture methods. Wiping a single tear, you decide to forego the CSI-worthy clean room and dive straight into this sugary science experiment. You pop the Peep in your mouth, bracing for a burst of Dr. Pepper flavor that would make your ancestors weep tears of soda joy. Instead, you're met with... a vague hint of cherry? Maybe a whisper of licorice? It's like your taste buds are having a fever dream after a sugar rush. For Real submitted by dudesekp to DrPepper [link] [comments] |
2024.03.11 16:57 LoveTruthLogic Macroevolution vs YEC?
If we had a Time Machine would you make a million dollar bet today about what would happen 400 million years from now? (Just for fun and discussion)
Newtonβs third law: I can predict that if I push against an object 400 million years from now that it will push back with equal and opposite force.
Newtonβ second law: I can predict that 400 million years from now, that a very massive object will accelerate less than a less massive object provided a constant net force is applied.
Gravity: I can predict that 400 million years from now that an object dropped 1 meter above sea level will accelerate downward.
Planetary motions: I can predict 400 million years from now how far the Earth will be away from the sun with reasonable accuracy and precision.
Conservation of mass in a chemical reaction: I can predict 400 million years from now that when chemical reactions occur in a closed system that the mass is always constant for the duration of the reaction.
Electricity and Magnetism: I can predict 400 million years from now that when electrons move that it creates a magnetic field and when magnets move that creates an electric field.
Evolution: I can predict 400 million years from now that organisms will change and adapt to survive.
VERSUS: (These are bets I would NOT make)
NOT Science: I believe that 400 million years from now that todayβs giraffe will be the great grandfather of a giraffe like bird with no legs but can fly and still retain a long neck.
NOT Science: I believe that 400 million years from now that a single celled organism today will become a large animal.
NOT Science: I believe that God would have destroyed all of life 400 million years from now. (Possibly a YEC POV from book of revelation?)
This is why Macroevolution is more of a belief than a science.
In summary: science is about verification, not beliefs.
Place your bets carefully!

2024.03.02 13:04 abusementpark Trip report 2/25-3/1
The Disney Withdrawal Syndrome is kicking in hard here so to cope Iβll make up a trip report.
2 adults and our 2 kids. Me (49M), my wife (50F), and two kids 14M, 7F, hereby referred to as βthe boyβ and βthe girlβ respectively. Driving over from St. Petersburg, FL. About 90 minutes with no traffic.
Sun 2/25 Check in a Pop Century
As a tall person (6β5β/1.95m) I really have to appreciate the height of the shower head at Pop Century. Itβs a small detail but it makes all the difference in the world to me.
2 adults and two kids can be tough in standard room because the boy wants his own bed, naturally. Luckily the girl loves air mattresses for some reason so we brought one with us for her. Made getting in and out of the room while she was sleeping hard as the only place for it is basically right in front of the door. We managed. We go like the rooms are just for sleeping. Weβre not spending any real time there outside of mid day breaks and overnight.
We all agreed this trip we will pay attention to the details. Hold doors for families that look stressed. Thank every single cast member we see even if theyβve not done anything specifically for us. Just thanks for being here and being awesome. This approach paid off in spades. We met so many great people, had countless surprising and rewarding interactions with cast members and other guests we just kept running into all day at random.
Mon 2/26 Hollywood Studios
We donβt go hard. We have four days. It feels like forever in the beginning. All of us just love being there. We do not race to get in lines, out pace other people walking in our direction. We are there to just BE, and our list of must-dos is small.
We have the most pleasant Skyliner ride into Hollywood Studios. A first for all of us. Weβve always stayed at All Star Movies until this year.
Started the day by meeting Ariel. Was nice to tour the old WDW memorabilia that leads up to her space.
Our daughter wanted to sing along with Elsa. Our son wanted literally anything else. So we split up here for a bit. Lazy walk around Star Wars for me and the boy. Eventually we meet back up just in time for the girl to meet Mando and Grogu with no crowd around them. Felt like star treatment for my girl. I got to take a picture with them. I got the distinct feeling Mando just tolerated my presence. It was all about Grogu and the girl. We ride Smugglerβs run. Iβm a pilot, the boy is a gunner, wife and girl are engineers. We didβ¦ ok.
We eat at Woodyβs Lunch Box. Watch the army men drum trio. Those guys are tight and their compositions are full of surprises and flair. Iβm a professional musician but you clearly donβt need to be one to fully appreciate their amazing technique and showmanship. Highlight of the day for me.
We walk slow. Just trying to savor being present. Itβs working and everyone is having a very fun and very peaceful time. We split up again so the girl can do the dance party. The boy and I head back to Batuu and just relax in the shade of the Falcon, watch people, eat outpost popcorn. Absolute heaven.
We meet again for a Lightning Lane entry onto Runamuck railroad. What a stellar ride that is. We all appreciated the conga line bouncing. The tech on display and in the background of that ride is pretty astonishing. I know itβs similar to Rise and even though Iβm partial to anything Star Wars, I think I enjoyed it more than Rise.
Here we take our mid day break and start counting how many times we hear the words βCaribbean Beach Resortβ on the Skyliner on the way to and from Pop Century. It becomes and inside joke over the next several days. Mainly because our son is tired of hearing it by the time weβre on the way back from Pop a couple hours later. We tease him. Itβs fun and he laughs, too. We leave at 2:30. Back to the park at 4:30.
We all go to Batuu because itβs time for the girlβs appointment at Saviβs. The boy and I got lightsabers the year before. This year is her turn. Next year I think I can convince my wife to own a lightsaber. Hopefully having 3 on the wall at home instead of 4 will trigger her FOMO and sheβll agree to let me buy her one next year.
This is a big moment for my daughter. She felt a little left out last year but we just couldnβt swing it. Sheβs waited all year. And this year itβs just her getting one. She feels special. She iS special! Weβre making a core memory here, I can feel it. She chooses me to be her companion. Sheβs a natural engineer, she needs no help. She knows exactly what she wants and how to put it together. I just watch. I videoed the whole thing but made sure to just hold my phone steady and watch her with my eyes and not in the screen. She chose a purple blade and Peace and Justice hilt. Mine is Elemental Nature, the boy is Protection and Defense. I guess this means next year my wife will be compelled to get Power and Control. Iβm scared now.
Anyways. Hers is hers and itβs unique among the others. I couldnβt be happier.
After Saviβs we meet some friends who are also in the park that day for dinner at Docking Bay 7. Tip Yips all around.
We ride Rise with our friends.
By now itβs time for Fantastic and it seems like everyone in the park is there. So many people! We luck out with central seats near the back. Easy to bolt at the end. Great show. This is mainly the girlβs trip and my wife, son and I are just along for the ride. She loves it so we love it.
We slow walk it back to Skyliner. We didnβt do everything and we didnβt come to do everything. Such a great day with great people, holding doors when we can, interacting with people whenever it feels organic and by the end of the day weβre full and we enjoy the breeze coming through the vents on the way back to Pop Century. Itβs a perfect, cool and breezy night. βWeβre now flying over Disneyβs Caribbean Beach Resort.β We all laugh every time now.
Tues 2/27 Animal Kingdom and dinner at Disney Springs
We all got to bed by 10pm after HS. Up at 6am. Quick bite in the room thanks to Pop having a spare microwave for us and my wifeβs forethought of bringing some food we can heat for pre-brekkie snacks before getting on the bus and heading to AK.
Lots of lazy early morning strolling through the park on the way to Pandora, a first for all of us. The girl has never been to AK. The boy was here last when he was 7. That was 7 years ago while my wife was pregnant with the girl. Even with Pandora, AK feels like a half day park. Weβre not entirely sad it doesnβt stay open past 6.
For this day I bought ILL for Passage of Flight. I felt it was worth the extra expense for all of us. We loved the ride. Snuck a few glances at the rest of the guests on the ride with us. Didnβt realize how big the facility is. Far as advancements in 3D movie theater tech itβs very impressive.
Proper late breakfast after Passage. We meet up with some other friends who are in town from California. We coordinated our WDW trips to overlap so we can see each other. This plan was a year in the making. It was so good to see them and meet their 4 year old daughter for the first time. We ride the Navi river ride with them. The animatronic at the end of that ride is incredibly expressive. Weβre all impressed with the tech and how itβs displayed. A beautiful experience.
We do the safari. Itβs getting hot! Lots of Giraffic Park jokes. Must go faster.
We eat at Harambe Market. The atmosphere, sounds and smells are still the best parts of the experience for me.
From here we head to Everest. The group splits up. Some of us stay with the little ones. The big ones go on Everest. Iβm one of the ones that stays. Everest makes my wife a little nauseous. The girl is tired. We split up briefly as a family. Wife and girl head back to the room. The boy and I stroll about while our friends from out of town ride Dinosaur. Heβs still traumatized from when I dragged him on it when he was 7. I donβt press it. We meet Kevin. This is much better than Dinosaur for both of us.
By now itβs time for the boyβs and my mid day break. The whole group splits up and our family is back together in the room. We go out later that evening and meet our friends for dinner at Disney Springs. D-Luxe burger is tucked away in a quiet corner. We stay there for a couple hours. This trip is half over and Iβm starting to feel the first pangs of βTHE END OF THE TRIP IS NEAR.β
Bus it back to Pop, bed by 10. Up again at 6.
Weds 2/28 Magic Kingdom
With those other parks out of the way (great parks donβt get me wrong but for us the magic is at MK and the kids havenβt even seen Epcot yet!) itβs time for Magic Kingdom. The girl wants to meet all the princesses. The boy wants Tron. I luck out with a virtual cue for Tron for me and the boy. Group 52. We have plenty of time.
This morning I did something so dumb. I knocked on the door to the room after stepping outside for some early morning air. My daughter answers the door but itβs a heavy door so it cracks open just a little bit. I open the door all the way and come right in. Sheβs barefoot. I wreck her left big toe. The kind of injury that keeps unfolding about how bad it is as the pain sets in for her. Itβs bleeding. The nail is cracked. Iβm devastated, sheβs crying. Ice. Bandaid. Do we cancel the day? She insists sheβll be fine after half hour of cleaning it, icing it, wrapping it. Iβm trying hard not to live in the anguish of my stupidity. We debate getting her a stroller. Sheβs more sad about that idea than she is about her toe. But I know it hurts so bad. I know her brave face. I am the lowest and I feel it. We have so much walking to do and this is basically the worst injury. We choose to go. Sheβs very brave.
Verrrry slow walk down Main Street at park open. The feels. This is my favorite part of MK. We really lean hard into being helpful where we can. Want us to take your picture? Let me get that door for you. The kids are doing it on their own now. Initiative! We meet so many great people on the way to the castle.
We wonβt be meeting up with our friends from out of town. Theyβre on a break day.
Just like last year, the first thing the girl wants to do is ride the carousel and then pull the sword. She says βdad, you donβt pull with your muscles, you pull with your heart.β Sheβs pulling my heart! I may have said this to her last year when talking about what would be her first trip in the weeks before going, looking over the park map at bedtime. She remembers. Unfortunately she will not be ruler of England this year. Next time, kid.
The wait to meet Rapunzel and Tiana is 5 minutes. The girl is transfixed by Tiana while waiting for her turn. Quietly under her breath sheβs telling me βSheβs so beautiful and graceful. Like a dancer.β Rapunzel is her favorite but Tiana has special, unexpected powers over my girl in this moment. On the way in at the bus stop at Pop the girl received a bus token from the driver. A small gesture but she felt special and singled out. Tiana and Rapunzel are more than happy to sign the bus token. Once signed it becomes almost a religious artifact for her. A small sequence of events from getting the token to getting them signed has turned into a huge moment for the girl. Absolute joy.
We head to Tomorrowland. The girl is guiding us. Sheβs also limping. Experimenting with skipping. Sheβs a trooper but this day will be extra slow and thatβs ok. Weβre not here to rush. Laugh Floor. Peoplemover. The big swirly ball next to Merchant of Venus. Stitch is there with a bunch of kids just spinning the heck out of that ball.
Eventually our Tron ride is nigh. We split up and my wife and the girl go meet Ariel βthe one with the fin. The other Ariel is the one with the legs.β This is how my daughter differentiates the HS Ariel from the MK Ariel and I love her for it.
Tron is crazy good. The first 8 seconds were me saying βoh god what have I done to myself.β Once I figured to just grip that bike with my thighs with everything I had my neck and head got a lot more stable. I am not a young man any more.
After Tron/Ariel we take our mid day break. The girl is extra tired. Sheβs been walking on the side of her foot. Not ideal for what should be at least a 10 mile day. Her leg must be exhausted. Nap from 2:30-4. Back in the park by 4:45.
Now we turn left at the castle instead of right. Mickey ice cream. Sheβs already feeling much better. Dinner at Pecos Bill. Ice cream before dinner only because itβs WDW. And I owe my daughter a payment for my stupidity. It doesnβt end with ice cream. There will be more treats. I will throw sugar at that toe til it feels better.
After dinner itβs Tiki Room and then flying carpets. By now I think maybe I can get us on Astro Orbiter just in time to see the start of the fireworks show during the ride. Iβve always wanted this. It doesβt work this time. The line is actually too short! I undershot the target by about 10 minutes.
The show was amazing like it always is. This time from the Tomorrowland bridge.
Despite the toe this was a magical day. We did maybe 7 things from open to close. The rest of the time was just being there. We took dozens of photos for other guests. Picked up dropped bottles and toys. Thanked every cast member we saw. Our mission to spread good will is still going strong. We all wave goodbye to Main Street. Even the boy did it and heβs almost too cool for it. We head back to Pop. Bed by 10:30. Up by 6.
Thurs 2/29 Epcot
Secured a virtual queue for Guardians. Group 34. This one just for my wife and the boy. The girl wonβt ride it and Iβm elected to be the one that stays with her. This feels like a privilege because she chose me. Weβll go meet Elsa instead.
Skyliner into France taking advantage of the early entry. Itβs been a long time since Iβve been to Epcot and the kids have never been. We ride Ratatouille first thing. The line is short. Excellent ride. I really do love these buggies that move around like Roombas. Same as Rise and Runaway Railroad.
Weβre all surprised thereβs no breakfast available in the World Showcase. At least none on our QS dining plan. The buckwheat crepes next to Ratatouille arenβt included. We decide to travel the world searching for something thatβs on our plan. Had I known that nothing on this side of the park would be open until 11 we would have made a bee line straight for The Land but we went the long way. By the time we got to The Land we were starving and not in a good way. Poor planning on my part.
After breakfast we wander through the front of the park. Itβs the second day of the Flower and Garden festival and thereβs a lot to take in. Much sooner than expected group 34 is called for Guardians and we split up. The wife and the boy head for the Milano and the girl and I head for Norway. The line for Elsa is about an hour long. We met some great people in line. The girl made an instant friend. Iβm sure a lot of you have experience with meeting Elsa and Anna and how special it is for the little ones. On our trip last year we had skipped Epcot so the girl has been anticipating this moment for a whole year. Itβs everything she wanted.
The boy and my wife arenβt off of Guardians yet so we head to The Seas and almost get stranded on the ride. It stops for about 10 minutes and weβre watching Crush and Squirt get swept up in the current about 20 times. It eventually moves again and weβre saved from the current. An hour later consulting Genie I see itβs down. We got lucky, I guess! We meet back up with our other half in the aquarium, watch the dolphins and turtles for a bit and then head for lunch.
Our friends from out of town are now in the park and we have lunch together under the trees outside Connections. Back to Norway for a lightning lane ride on Frozen Ever After. Something on this ride hurt me unexpectedly. A small but very effective bump right at the moment the cameras snap a picture. Might have been the angle of my head at that moment that conspired with the bump to send an electric shock down my spine. The muscles on the front of my neck are tightening up and itβs a bad sign. The girl also gets something in her eye and it wonβt wash out. Poor thing. Sheβs been through a lot emotionally these past couple days. Itβs 2:00 and we decide itβs past time to head to the room for a rest. We split off from our friends and log a few more βCaribbean Beach Resortβ laughs on the way to Pop and nap til 4.
We wake up and everyone is feeling magically better. The toe, the eye, my neck. All better. Amazing! Weβre back in the park at 4:45.
We meet back up with our friends for fish and chips in the UK and then split off again, heading for Te Fiti. This turns out to be maybe the girlβs favorite moment of the whole trip. Itβs such a peaceful and playful space. Sheβs disappointed Moana isnβt there for a meet and greet but she overcomes. I donβt think Moana is ever there, at least not today. She wasnβt promised. It just seemed like a natural assumption for her to make.
After Te Fiti we ride Spaceship Earth. Itβs been down most of the day but happily itβs running again at 6pm. My poor boyβs face was mangled by the auto capture so the ride back down was a little horrifying in a fun way watching half a face dance across a futuristic landscape and ride a flying bike. I miss Walter Cronkite and Iβm nostalgic for the Spaceship Earth ride I remember from when my dad took me to Epcot opening week in Oct of β82. I was 8. This is a core memory for me. The whole back half of the ride is now a touch screen experience in the dark. The visions of the future of space travel and communications in 1982 are kitchy and quaint now and I understand why all that is missing. I canβt help but feel the ride back down in the dark is a missed opportunity, though.
We get some freeze dried mascarpone cheesecake at a stall near Canada and itβs amazing. Meet up with our friends at Mexico and itβs time for the evening/night time crawl across the World Showcase. Boat ride in Mexico. Lychee candy from China. Caramel from Germany. Relax by the Fountain of Neptune in Italy and pictures with topiary Lady and the Tramp. Watch a band play in Morocco. Family sushi dinner at Shiki-Sai in Japan where I teach the girl how to use chopsticks. A good hour browsing Mitsukoshi and the girl practices Japanese phrases with a very accommodating and friendly CM near the Totoro shelf. For me this is the best 2 1/2 hours weβve spent in the parks.
Now itβs time for Luminous and my family and our friends from California set up by the Tori gate. All the feels. Itβs a spectacular show and Epcot strikes me as a multi billion dollar humanist celebration and I am here for it.
Lazy walking through France after the show and we say our goodbyes to our friends at the Skyliner queue and line up for what will be the longest line of our entire time in all 4 days at WDW.
The kids both agree that when we come back next year Epcot should be a 2 day adventure and weβll skip AK. Weβre already designing this trip on the ride back to Pop, adding in a break day for what will be a 5 day trip. Epcot, HS, break day, MK, Epcot.
Finally back in our room, absolutely toasted. We will check out tomorrow and we do some very light packing to make the morning easier. This is our latest bedtime of the whole trip. 11:30! As weβre all about to drift off, from over on the air mattress the girl says quietly βCaribbean Beach Resort.β Laughing is the last thing I remember.

2024.02.26 08:19 Flagg1991 My Grandmother's Ghost Won't Let Me Have Sex: Part 4
The next day, Brad jolted awake to the sound of banging at the front door. Who the fuck is that?
Getting out of bed, he shuffled through the living room, crept to the door, and peered through the peephole. Heatherβs face, huge and distorted, greeted him, and Brad sighed. He knew she was coming over, but this early? He undid the security chain, turned the bolt, and twisted the knob. Heather, dumb trench coat on deck, started to speak, but stopped. βYouβre in your underwear,β she pointed out.
βNo shit, I was asleep,β Brad said.
He stepped aside and she came in. βYou couldnβt come later?β Brad asked.
She looked at him like he had lobsters crawling out of his ears. βThe dayβs already half done.β
βNot my day.β
βYou need to wake up earlier.β
Whatever. He was not in the mood for this.
While she sat on the couch, Brad went back to his room and threw a pair of cargo shorts and a polo on. He dropped onto the edge of the bed, pulled a pair of sandles on, then went back into the living room.
Heather was gone.
Did Nana get her? He almost hoped Nana got her.
Something clinked behind him and he spun on his heels. Past the kitchen threshold, Heather rummaged through the fridge. βYo,β he called, βwhat the fuck?β
βI want to have a quick bite before we get started,β she said over her shoulder. βI skipped breakfast.β
For the second time in his life, Brad was speechless. βSeriously? Youβre eating up my food now?β
She came out with a glass jar and bumped the door closed with her hip. βJust some olives,β She opened a drawer, closed it, opened another, plucked a fork out, and leaned back against the counter. Brad shook his head and held up his hand, palm out. βFine. You know what, eat whatever you want. I can afford to buy more.β
A look of hurt flickered across her face, and Brad was kind of, sort of sorry he said that.
Leaving her to it, Brad went into the living room and sat. Heather came in a minute later and sank onto the opposite end. She forked an olive and lifted it to her mouth, but before she got it there, it plopped onto her lap. βPlease be careful,β Brad said.
βSorry,β she said. She picked it up with her fingers and popped it into her mouth. βHas your grandma shown up lately?β she asked.
βNo,β Brad said.
Last night, he lay awake in bed with all the lights on and browsed Instagram on his phone until he fell asleep at four. The whole while, he expected Nana to turn up, looking mad, but she didnβt.
βGood,β Heather said, βmaybe sheβs satisfied.β She finished the last olive, took the jar back into the kitchen, and dropped it into the trash. βYou ready for your next lesson in empathy?β
Brad pursed his lips. βYeah.β
She came back in, sat next to him, and pulled out her phone. βWeβre going to watch a video,β she said. She logged onto YouTube, typed something into the search bar, then tapped the screen. She scooted closer, and Brad leaned in to see.
A fat man in a parka waddled across an icy parking lot, picking his way as carefully as his titanic girth would allow. Suddenly, he slipped and landed hard on his ass. Brad snickered, then cried out when Heatherβs bony knuckles smashed into his arm. βOw!β
βYeah, not so funny now, is it?β
βYou hit me!β Brad accused and rubbed the wound.
She nodded. βI did. See, we human beings all have the same emotions. What hurts you hurts other people and vice versa. Now, imagine yourself in that guyβs shoes. Youβre walking along, trying to get to your car, got a crap lfe, boss breathing down your neck, your wifeβs cheating on you because youβve lost weight and now youβre not fat enough for her, then BOOM, you fall down on the pavement. You know what that feels like, donβt you, Brad?β
Brad glared at her. He was sick of her hitting him, sick of her eating his food, and really, really sick of her talking to him like he was a retard.
She met his gaze directly, unwaveringly, and that irked him all the more. βDonβt you...Brad?β she repeated.
If he werenβt being haunted, and if Heather didnβt have at least a grasp of what she was doing, heβd grab her back the back of her shirt and toss her out the door.
βDonβt you?β she pressed.
βYes,β he spat, βokay? I know what itβs like to fall down.β
βItβs not fun, is it?β
βNo,β he said.
βAnd if someone posted a video of you falling down online, how would you feel.β
He opened his mouth to tell her what she wanted to hear, but she stopped him. βReally think about it,β she said. βHow would it make you feel to know that to millions of people around the world, you exist only as a punchline? A clown to fall down over and over again for their amusement?β
Brad sighed.
βReally put yourself in that guyβs shoes.β
He thought for a moment. βEmbarrassed,β he said. βIβd be embarrassed.β
βRight? Again, to everyone, youβre that loser who fell down on the internet. You might be smooth and suave with the ladies, but the entire worldβs first impression of you is as a clown, and thatβs not going to go away. Thatβs who you will always be.β
Okay, putting it like that, yeah, he could see how fucked it was. βYouβre right,β he said, and admitting that kind of hurt.
βThat is the key to empathy. Like, you donβt have to cry and bleed from your heart all the time, but you have to understand where other people are coming from. Letβs watch another.β
She typed something else in and held the phone out so he could see. A man and a woman squared up to each other in what looked like the dining room of a McDonaldβs. They traded insults, then, like quicksliver, the man stole her in the jaw and she toppled over.
Brad winced.
βHard to watch, huh?β Heather asked.
Yes, it was.
βAlright,β Heather said and put her phone away, βnext phase.β
The next phase wound up being what Heather called βcommunity expirience.β First, they went to the zoo. It was bright and hot and there was no shade on the concrete throughfare winding between the enclosures; sweat coated Heatherβs flushed cheek and plastered her bangs to her forehead. Brad, hands shoved deep into his pockets, moseyed alongside her and stole quick glances at her face. She looked like a tomato. βYou should really take that shit off,β he said and nodded at her jacket.
βIβm fine,β she said quickly.
βWhy wonβt you take it off?β he asked. βWhat, you got a bunch of tattoos you donβt want me to see? Hairy arms?β
She brushed her hair out of her face. βI just like it, okay? I feel like Dick Tracy when I wear this thing.β
Bradβs brow furrowed. βWho?β
βHeβs an old school gumshoe,β Heather said, βI love stuff like that.β
Gum shoe? What the fuck was that?
He didnβt dare ask, though. Hanging out with Heather made him feel stupid enough as it was. She was smart, heβd give her that. A lot smarter than him. βCool,β he said.
βI think it is. Other people might not, but I really donβt care about their opinion.β
βObviously,β he said before he could stop himself.
Heather shrugged one shoulder. βI live my life the way I want.β
βSo do I,β Brad said pointedly. βAnd Iβm being haunted over it.β
βWell...there are consequences for everything. I wanted to be a ghost detective and I incured a butt ton of student loan debts to do it. I donβt really regret it, but...yeah. Canβt say itβs not my own fault.β
βBeing haunted wasnβt my own fault, though,β Brad said.
Heather nodded. βThatβs true, but consider yourself lucky. Better that than an unitended pregnancy.β
βIβm careful,β Brad said.
Heather snorted. βThatβs what they all say. Iβm careful, baby. Next thing you know, itβs be careful, baby, βcuz they have a toddler climbing on everything.β
Yeah? Not him. He pulled out every time. Some men might have a weak pull-out game, but his was strong.
He said that, and Heather hummed. βThings have a way of getting through sometimes,β she said. βIt can happen to anyone...including you, Brad. Youβre so worried about settling down, imagine having a kid with some woman you met at the bar. Some woman you donβt even really like. Now youβre stuck with her for the rest of your life, even if you donβt stay with her, because sheβs the mother of your child.β
An image of him trapped with some chick he didnβt love and a screaming, shrieking baby danced mockingly through his head. Claustropobia gripped his chest and his lungs crushed as if under a steely fist. Fuck no.
Heather stopped abruptly in front of a cage, and Brad backed up to stand next to her. Inside, a lioness stretched out on a flat rock while two cubs tumbled and wrestled, one gaining the upper hand then losing it just as quickly. βDo you like animals?β she asked.
One cub pounced the other, and they rolled across the ground, kicking up a little cloud of dust. βTheyβre alright,β Brad said. βI donβt know if I want to own one, but theyβre cool to look at.β
βGetting a cat might be a good exercise in empathy,β Heather said. βCatβs are low maintance.β
βStill a lot of work,β Brad said. βYou gotta feed it, water it, clean its shit box.β
βYes,β Heather confirmed, βyou have to make space for it in your life. We means not being so selfish.β
Brad sighed.
Next, they stopped for ice cream. βIβm overheating,β Heather panted and swiped the back of her hand across her forehead.
βTake the jacket off,β Brad said.
βNo. I just need some ice cream, thatβs all.β
They waited in line, and when their turn came, she ordered a single scoop vanilla cone. Brad hadnβt known her very long, but that fit her so well he chuckled. Vanilla. Plain and boring. Just like her. He got chocolate with sprinkles just to show her how youβre supposed to take your ice cream.
Afterward, they walked along the promenade. People steamed by on either side of them, some with kids, and as they passed, Brad watched them closely. Did he ever want kids? LIke...yeah, they were a lot of work, but if he was honest with himself, the idea of having a little buddy was kind of appealing. He glanced at Heather and his half-smile fell.
There was a huge dollop of ice cream on her nose. βYou got a littleβ¦β
She looked at him uncomprehendingly.
β...something right here.β He brushed his nose.
Understanding, she wiped her nose with the cuff of her jacket. βI was going to save it for later, but eh.β
They stopped at three more exhibits: Monkeys, elephants, and giraffes, three animals that Brad didnβt think heβd ever seen in person. He told Heather this, and she hummed. βMe either,β she said. βYour parents never took you to the zoo?β
He tried to remember, then shook his head. βI donβt think so. We didnβt really do stuff like that. I went to the aquarium once, but, you know, Dad worked a lot and my mom was lazy as fuck.β He snickered because it was true. Mom didnβt like to do anything. She could go to cocktail parties and the country club just fine, but everything else was a chore Even going to the doctor.
βYeah, mine didnβt really either,β Heather said. βI went to couple petting zoos, though, those were pretty cool. I wish theyβd let us pet these animals. How many people can say theyβve touched a real, live giraffe?β
βNot many,β Brad said.
Heather sucked her lips into her mouth...and Brad already knew what that meant.
She was thinking.
Stealing a quick look around, she ducked to get under the metal railing separating the sidewalk from the enclosure. A loud, sharp, βYo,β was startled from Bradβs throat, and she looked back at him with an innocent expression. βWhat are you doing? No.β
She looked between Brad and the enclosure, sighed, and stood up straight. βI wasnβt going to go in, just lure it over so I could pet it.β
βAnd get your hand bit off,β Brad said.
She blew a raspberry. βGiraffes are herbivores. They donβt eat meat.β
βYeah, but what if a leaf fell on your hand and it thought it was plant?β
Heather opened her mouth, then frowned when she realized he had a point. βI could always get a hook.β
βYou say that now but wait until you have to wipe your ass.β
Heather burst into laughter, and when she snorted like a piglet at a trough, Brad laughed too. A shaft of afternoon sun fell across her face and set it aglow. Her eyes, vivid and blue, sparkled like crystalline tide pools. One was slightly off center, gazing just a little to the left, and all at once, Brad realized something.
She was kind of cute.
βWipe my ass,β she snickered. βThatβs why God us two hands. Just in case.β
βHave you ever tried using your left hand for that?β
She shook her head. βNope, but where thereβs a will, thereβs a way.β
After the zoo, they stopped for lunch at a McDonaldβs on Wayside Blvd. The floors were covered in spilled soda, used napkins, and loose French fries, and the girl behind the counter has trouble taking orders and counting money. Like Dad said, fast food workers want fifteen dollars an hour but theyβre worth five at best.
She screwed up Heatherβs food (she asked for no ketchup and onions...but got extra of both), and Bradβs face flushed with anger. She probably did it on purpose. Oooh, a special order, now we have to pick the burger apart before we microwave it, so hard, letβs get back at her. βYeah, excuse me,β he said. The girl, in the middle of dashing off to fuck something else up, froze like a deer in the headlights. βShe asked for no ketchup and onions and you gave her double of both.β
βA-Alright,β the girl stammered, βIβll get another one.β
When she finally brought him a replacement almost ten minutes later, he was fuming. He snatched it out of her hand, went back to the table, and sat across from Heather, who munched French fries and stared out the window at the cars passing from the drive-thru. βHere,β he said and sat it on her tray, βfucking took long enough.β
βItβs fine,β she said. She unwrapped it and lifted the bun to check. βOh.β
βWhat?β Brad asked more sharply then he meant. βThey messed it up again, huh?β
She let the bun drop. βItβs nothing. Just keptchup. I can deal with that.β
Brad started to get up. This was bullshit. That bitch messed up a simple fucking order two times. He wasnβt going to just sit here and take that.
Heather stopped him. βNo, really, itβs fine.β
βYou didnβt want ketchup,β Brad said.
βIt doesnβt matter,β she said.
βYes it does.β
βNo, it doesnβt.β
βYes,β he said, βit does. She fucked up your hamburger twice.β
A strange and uncharacteristic look of annoyance crossed her face, and Brad faltered, then sat.
βSheβs a teeanger,β she said firmly, βshe made a mistake, itβs not a big deal.β Her eyes widened and her face lit up, her irritation draining away with an almost audible sucking sound. In its place was a sunniness that sent an inexplicable ripple through Bradβs stomach. βHey, this is one of those teachable moments President Obama was always talking about.β
Huh?
βRemember your first job?β she asked. βHow you felt way in over your head and made mistakes and lived in terror of your boss getting mad at you?β
Brad thought he had a decent poker face, but not good enough; some tick or twitch betrayed him, and Heather picked up on it instantly. βYou havenβt even had a job, have you?β
Damn. She was a good detective after all. βYes,β he said, βI told you, I do real estate.β
She cocked a skeptical brow.
βReally,β he said, βI -β
She tucked her chin against her chest and pursed her lips together. Her face was a perfect picture of doubt, and Brad could already tell he wouldnβt get anywhere. βOkay,β he said, βI lied. Happy?β
βNot really, no,β she said. βI donβt see why you lied about it, but whatever.β
Why did he lie about it? He lied to his father so he couldnβt get cut off. There was a reason for it, but what was the reason he lied to Heather? What was the reason he lied to all the girls he picked up?
βItβs kind of embarrassing, in a way,β he said. βPeople think if you donβt work, you live on mommy and daddyβs money and donβt do anything.β
Heather tilted her head in confusion. βIsnβt that what you do though?β
βNo,β he said, but even as he spoke them, the words rang hollow in his own ears. Yes, actually, that is what he did. He slept late, went out to eat, hit the clubs, picked up girls, drove around with his friends.
In other words, he didnβt do much of anything.
βYour life is basically summer vacation,β Heather said, βonly better funded. The reason you havenβt developed empathy is because you have a very narrow life expirience. You canβt relate to a lot of things that normal people go through. You know what you have, Brad?β
Brad started to speak.
βYou, my friend, have a gnarly case of affluenza.β
Afflu-what?
She whipped out her phone and typed something. βAccording to Google, affluenza is: A psychological malaise supposedly affecting wealthy young people, symptoms of which include a lack of motivation, feelings of guilt, and a sense of isolation.β She looked up and nodded to herself. βThatβs kind of you.β
βI feel guilt,β Brad said defensively.
βYeah?β She twisted around in her seat. βDo you feel guilty for being mean to the cashier?β
The girl stood behind the register while a fat white woman in a manager uniform berated her. The formerβs face was the color of spoiled milk and she looked like she was doing everything in her power to keep from crying.
Bradβs chest pinched. βYes,β he said honestly, βI do feel bad now.β
Heather turned. She met his eyes and held his gaze, then squinted and leaned over the table. Bradβs heartbeat sped up and suddenly felt uncomfortable. βWhat are you doing?β
βLooking into your eyes,β she said seriously, βto see if youβre lying.β
βAnd?β
She sat up straight. βYouβre not.β
With that, she picked up her burger.
Following lunch, they went to Mansfield Park, a wide patch of greenery wedged between 56th Street and W. 19th, and bordered to the south by the freeway. Concrete walking paths wound between playgrounds, benches, and duck ponds, and even though it was easy to imagine you were miles away from civilization at times, the sounds of the city were always there to remind you where you really were.
They walked around and talked about nothing much. Brad didnβt see how this was supposed to aid in his search for empathy, but between the warm breeze and Heatherβs musical laughter, he enjoyed himself anyway. At one point, they stopped at one of the ponds and watched a bunch of ducks gliding across the placid surface. βWhatβs a school of ducks called?β he asked, genuinely curious.
Heather snorted. βNot a school. Youβre thinking of fish.β
βWhat are they called?β
She didnβt immediately reply. βI dunno,β she finally said, βprobably a flock. Or a gaggle.β
Brad repeated each one to himself to see which fit best. Flock of ducks, gaggle of ducks. βI like flock better.β
βYeah, that one sounds better.β She reached into the pocket of her jacket and pulled something out. When Brad saw what it was, his nose crinkled.
Half a bun slathered in ketchup. βEw, you saved that?β
βI did,β she said.
βWhy?β
βBecause I wanted to feed some ducks,β she said. She tore a piece off, took a step back, and flung it underhand with an unsurprising lack of grace. It arced down and splashed into the water with a wet plop. One of the ducks sailed over, took it between its beak, then promptly spat it back out. Heather tore another piece and did the same thing. This time, the duck turned its nose up at it and skimmed away.
Its too human disdain made Brad laugh. βItβs probably the ketchup. Their palates arenβt used to it.β
She dropped the rest of the bun onto the ground, and they started walking again. Brad watched her from the corner of his eye, a question forming in his mind. βYou said you like gumshoes so you wanted to be a detective.β
βRight.β
βWhyβd you become a paranormal person?β
Ahead, two old men sat on a bench and passed a bottle in a brown paper bag back and forth.
Heather flopped her head back, then glanced at him. βI like paranormal stuff too. I couldnβt decide which one I wanted to do, so this was like, you know, the best of both worlds.β
βYou could make more money as an actual detective,β Brad said, βright?β
She nodded. βYeah, I could, but I wouldnβt be doing what I love.β
βBut money is more important.β
She hummed. βNot really. I get by. For the most part. Itβs tight but Iβm not an expensive person.β
βI guess if youβre happy,β Brad said.
βI am.β
For a while they walked in silence. βHow is this helping me?β he asked.
She shrugged. βItβs not, I guess. I just felt like going to the park.β
He chuckled. Okay then.
By now, her face was red and sweaty again. In ten minutes, her step had slowed. She drooped like a wilted flower and panted the way a dog might after a long, hard run. βTake the damn jacket off,β Brad said.
βNah, Iβm good.β
βNo youβre not. Youβre overheating. Youβre gonna die.β
She rolled her eyes. βI wonβt die.β
βSeriously,β he said.
They stopped and she regarded him with a quizzical expression, then slipped out of the coat. Beneath, she wore a plain pink T-shirt with a series of tiny holes in the underarm and along the hem. Brad was somehow surprised that she had breasts. Not very big, the way he liked, but breasts nevertheless.
The way her sweat-soddened shirt clung to their dip and swell was nce.
Swallowing, he held his hand out, and she reluctantly let go. He draped it over one arm and they started walking again. He furtively studied Heatherβs bare arm for signs of anything worth hiding - hair, track marks, Nazi tattoos - but they were smooth, silken, and unblemished. He guessed she really did just like wearing the jacket.
Dork, he thought fondly.
βWhat got you into ghosts and stuff?β Brad asked. βSeems kind of like a strange thing.β
βLiking the supernatural?β
βYeah.β
She shrugged one shoulder. βSeems perfectly normal to me. Everyone loves a good ghost story from time-to-time.β
βFrom time-to-time,β he said, βnot many people want it all the time.β
βSure they do,β Heather said. βWhy do you think Stephen King is so big? There are lots of horror fans.β
The path curved to the right and ran past a basketball court where a group of boys chased each other and called out good-natured insults. βMaybe, but not many of them go to college to become a Ghostbuster.β
She hummed. βTrue. I liked ghost stories and scary movies growing up, and my grandma used to tell me all these legends and stuff and...I donβt know, I just fell in love with that sort of thing. It was something special, you know?β
Brad nodded. βYeah, I, uh, I used to watch soaps with my grandma, and that was kind of special.β He laughed. He hadnβt thought of his and Nanaβs stories in a long, long time. βI donβt like them now, but...like, good memories.β
βYeah,β Heather said. βI think we all have things like that.β A wistful smile touched her lips. βWhen I was a little girl, I used to watch the news with my dad. Iβd snuggle up in his lap and...I didnβt understand a single thing they were saying, but it wasnβt about that. It was about spending time with my dad.β
The sentimentality in her voice struck Brad, and he swallowed. It sounded like watching the news with her dad meant a lot to her. When he looked back on watching soaps with Nana, he didnβt remember the show itself, he remembered the feeiling, the closeness, the sense of safety and love.
Heather was likely the same.
βYeah, same here,β he said.
It was getting late by the time they got back to the car. Soft pink light tinged the sky and long shadows lay over the ground. Brad drove and Heather sat in the passenger seat, her coat in her lap. βI think you learned a lot today,β she said.
He knitted his brow. βDid I?β
She nodded. βOh, yeah. You were really worried about me overheating.β
βYou looked like you were going to die,β he said. βYour face was all red and you were starting to melt.β
βYeah...and you cared.β
Yes, he did. βLook, Iβm not a monster,β he said.
βI know,β she said, and for some reason, that felt like high praise, and Brad almost smiled.
At his building, they parked behind Heatherβs car, in the shade of a tree with fat leaves. Brad killed the engine and they got out. βSo...this might be it,β Heather said. βI donβt think thereβs much else I can teach you. You have to do the rest.β
βWhat rest?β Brad asked with a twist of apprehension.
βGetting to a place where youβre ready to grow up and settle down.β
Oh.
That.
Brad sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. βIβm not ready for that, though,β he said soberly. βIβm just not.β
βI know,β Heather replied. βAnd thereβs nothing anyone can do about that except for you, and even then I donβt think thatβs something you can just...you know, flip a switch for. Itβs like quitting smoking or something, you have to be ready. No one can force you into it.β
βExcept a ghost.β
Heather tilted her head in acquiescence. βParents and grandparents often nag their kids to, you know, grow up and be better. Like...when are you gonna give me grandkids? When are you gonna get married. I think thatβs all your grandmaβs doing. She just happens to be doing it from beyond the grave.β
βSheβs gonna haunt me until I give in,β Brad moaned. βSo itβs either be haunted or do something Iβm not ready for.β
βMaybe,β Heather said. βThen again, she got her message across and now you have a lot to think on.β
Yeah, a whole fucking lot.
βI gotta go,β Heather said, βI donβt think thereβs anything else I can do for you, but if you need me, call me.β
An invisible icepick pierced Bradβs stomach.
He kind of didnβt want her to go.
βHow much do I owe you?β he asked, ignoring the odd and unpleasent churning in his
stomach.
βNothing,β Heather said, βyou already paid. Weβre good. Just...tell your friends about me. I could use the business.β She flashed a lopsided grin.
And then she was gone.

2024.02.13 16:25 richarizard Things to Do in NYC: March 2024 Edition
From NY-A to NY-Z, thereβs so much to do in NYC!
(Sorry, couldn't resist.) Itβs a refrain I sing a lot, but itβs true: the sheer variety of what there is to do in New York City is staggering.
This month, I offer a free list that helps to showcase the wide range of what one can do here, from Alphabet City to Zuccotti Park. Most of the events below can also be found in my more extensive monthly
Blankman List, which is in a (far more logical) chronological arrangement and includes at least one event for every day of the month.
Here is my
Reddit post for February for the remainder of the month.
Disclaimer: before going anywhere, please confirm the date, time, location, cost, and description using the listed website. Any event is at risk of being rescheduled, relocated, sold out, at capacity, or canceled. Costs are rounded to the nearest dollar and may change. Hey, everyone! I wanna fill my pet journal but don't want to keep the pet, in other words I'm looking to basically do a trust trade for you to give the pet I need and then give it right back just so I can "have it" in my journal. I have compiled a some proofs of other trades I did in the past and go from 2021-2023 of AMC trades and after adds!

2024.01.27 06:13 LucyAriaRose New Update to "Can I just shame my own toxic MOH for a minute?"
I am still not the Original Poster. That is u/CosmicMoose77. She posted in
weddingshaming. I did not add any emojis, and the text is exactly as typed. The screenshots are included in the post link.
Previous BORU
here.
New Update marked with ****\*
Trigger Warning: dog hit by a car but he recovers
Original Post: March 27, 2023 OP provides screenshots of her messages. I have transcribed them here. MOH is maid-of-honor. MOH: So I basically need to be there Thursday Night
OP: Yup
MOH: Or is it all just Friday night
OP: Then you can help decorate on Friday with the rest of us crazies π
OP: Friday afternoon/evening kinda thing I think
MOH: Yeah but I hate your entire wedding party
MOH: π
OP: Yeah but you have to be nice π
MOH: I hop you realize I don't do speeches. No public speaking from me is happening π
OP: I'll get [redacted] to do one then
OP: She's the mc anyway so π
MOH: Gross
OP: You don't hate my whole party, you haven't even met [redacted] yet π
MOH: She's related to your boyfriend, so I don't hold much faith there
OP: Do you even want to be part of this? You already said you hate the rest of the party, and it sounds like you're determined to have a bad time π
MOH: Nope, that's not how it is. I'm just reiterating that I won't pretend to like people that I don't but it's not going to be an issue on my part. Just don't expect me to be fake about it and pretend to like anyone.
MOH: Just so you can't give me shit later for the hundredth time about 'having to be nice.' I'm not rude to people I don't like unless they give me a reason, I'm just not going to be fake buddy buddy with them
OP: Well you're not going there to support anybody else, you're the maid of honour because you're one of my best friends. But sometimes you made me feel like being maid of honour is a big chore for you, and if that's how you feel I don't want to put you through something you'll hate. Cause I want you to have as good of a time as possible
MOH: Obviously that's not intentional, but maybe just how you perceived it. That's exactly the point I'm trying to make, I"m going for you and you alone, not to play fake friends with anyone else. But the time of year is a legitimate concern, that's why I wanted to know exactly when I HAVE to be there by and when I can leave. When it was September, that wasn't as big of... [post cuts off]
MOH: I don't like [fiancΓ©] You know that. I doubt I ever will and we're gonna have to just live with that. π€·πΌββοΈ It sucks and I wish I could, but he's just a type of person that I can't stand so I'm not going to pretend. Obviously I'm not going to make an issue about it, it just is what it is.
OOP write more of a 'post' in the comments: My best friend and I have been friends since high school, like 13+ years. We made this pact that weβd be each others MOH one day.
Fast forward to Christmas 2022 when I got engaged. I just assumed sheβd be happy and excited, and happy to be MOH. But after I brought up our childish old pact, she said to me βyou know, I do have other friends I could ask to be MY maid of honour.β
That shouldβve been my first clue π€¦π»ββοΈ
A couple days ago we were talking about the wedding, which is now in 6 months. And she was asking me when she had to be there (itβs in the next province over so she has to make plans, which I totally understand). So we were talking about that until she started to shit on the rest of the party AND my fiancΓ©.
Sheβs never made any effort to get to know my fiancΓ©, who has always been nothing but kind to her. Sheβs always just rude to him every time she sees him, and ignored him any other time.
And Iβll also add that sheβs dating a guy who hit my dog with his truck, and then defended him saying my dog was chasing him. Her original story when it happened (back in 2018) was that he was driving too fast, but now if I bring it up she says he was driving slow enough. I lived with her on her farm at that point in time.
But Iβve still made the effort to get to know her guy, and he feels bad for what happened so Iβve forgiven him. But she will still refuse to actually get to know my fiancΓ©.
*just also adding that my dog is okay, he was just sore for a while.
So now Iβm justβ¦so so upset. I feel so many things, I feel like Iβve been allowing her toxic behaviour to just roll off my back for far too long and now she wouldnβt expect me to fight back. Drama is the last thing I want at our wedding, but I feel like if I let her be part of it then thatβs super disrespectful to my fiancΓ© and my other friends who do actually support us. It just really hurts.
Relevant Comments: (She posted a lot so I tried to narrow it down) People laugh at the dwindling use of laughing face emojis: "Itβs been my way of coping with serious topics, I try to diffuse the tension with the laughing emoji"
"Itβs partially because how she and I already normally talk to each other. But also because Iβm autistic, have problems with emotions, and I never want to come across as too serious so I add emojis in everything I type. Unfortunately that also means that I donβt always know when NOT to use them"
She is not your friend: "I really shouldβve known that when she wanted to go wedding dress shopping together. She said she wanted to βfake her own engagementβ so she could try dresses on with me π€¦π»ββοΈ"
Why does she hate your fiancΓ©/this time of year BS? "She is the kind of person who will judge someone else within the first 30 seconds of meeting them. And if she doesnβt like the kind of person they are, no matter how nice or awesome they are, she will just hate them forever for it. My fiancΓ© has always been so so nice to her, and she is always so rude and short tempered with him. Even though sheβs barely spent more than 5 minutes in the same room as him. The time of year thing, Iβm honestly not sure. Sheβs opening a bar with her boyfriend and probably thinks theyβll be busy"
Is your fiancΓ© abusive? "If my fiancΓ© is an abuser, then Iβm a giraffe! Heβs literally the sweetest and kindest man ever. Heβs treated me like an absolute dream since we met"
Anyone else have an issue with him? "Just her. Everybody else loves him and says heβs the sweetest"
A few people insult her (and are downvoted) for being such a doormat, but her response provides more clarity (and honestly more questions): "Because thatβs how we always talk with each other. Maybe I am an idiot for being walked on, but Iβve been like that my whole life.
Being raised in a doomsday cult didnβt help, I was always told what to do and who to be. People always walked over me. I was also homeschooled so I didnβt know how to behave around people. I didnβt know how to look for red flags, or what red flags even WERE. I honestly thought this was just how friendships work. And I suppose being autistic never helped either, it just made me more awkward and blind to seeing the manipulation. Sorry Iβm not automatically a strong person."
"I donβt think Iβve been ok for a while lol. I kinda felt like this wasnβt how regular friends should be, and Iβve even had other people tell me that sheβs not a good friend. But I just held on to the past too long"
Update in Comments: March 27, 2023 (4 hours later) Iβm not good at Reddit and donβt know how to edit the actual post, but I fired her. I sent her a message saying her silence told me enough and itβs best if I found someone else to be MOH.
Then I told her I was done with her blatant disrespect of not only my friends, but of my future husband. And Iβm not putting up with it anymore. No answer back yet, but I pulled the plug.
How new MOH is responding: "Sheβs very excited! And sheβs proud of me for basically taking the trash out lol"
"I already took her out of my bridesmaid Facebook group and banned her from finding it again!"
OOP's Message to MOH kicking her out: I have transcribed the text again OP: You know what? Your silence is enough of an answer. I think it's best if I find someone else to fill the role of MOH. You won't enjoy it at all, and I'll be worried about you the whole time instead of enjoying one of the best days of my life.
The fact that you so blatantly disrespected all of my other friends, is complete bullshit and unacceptable. It's not fair to [redacted] or the rest of the party. And it's definitely not fair to me. You put me in a horrible position and I'm sick of it. I shouldn't have to play mediator on my wedding day because you don't feel like being nice to my people. Come as a guest if you like, but if you're so against my marriage and [redacted] then I think it's best if you don't stand up there with us.
MOH final response: Former MOH: You literally blew things out of proportion and made up scenarios in your head. Who cares if I don't like all your other friends? Do you think every person at every wedding likes each other? It's not an issue. You don't like some of my friends and I couldn't care less. It's literally not even an issue but you made it into one. Since when do I cause public issues with people? If anything, I just don't make conversation with people. You make it sounds so overly dramatic like I'm out to ruin your life, which is honestly hilarious and kinda hurtful by itself. When I've done nothing but support and try to help you for the last ten years.
But seriously, show me one time I ever said I was against your marriage. You came up with that. I don't love the way you guys did some things and I don't think he's the best match out there for you, but it has nothing to do with me so who cares. It doesn't mean I don't support you, Jesus Christ.
OOP's final thoughts on that above text: "You know what? When I finally heard back from her, she immediately tried to turn the tables and make me the bad guy. She blamed me for everything, and yeah not a single apology. Didnβt even acknowledge that she hurt me at all"
*****New Update in Comments of BORU post: January 21, 2024 (10 months later)****\*
Hiya! OOP here! I know nothing about Reddit and had ZERO clue this was cross-posted until my husband told me like 15 minutes ago.
Wanted to give an update if I can! I know that this post is MONTHS old, but I felt the need to set a couple things straight.
First, thank you to everybody for the support. I never realized how toxic my ex-bff was until I read comments on my original post (and your comments here just reiterated how severe she was).
I saw some questions about the doomsday cult I was in, and yes I used to be one of Jehovahβs Witnesses. I was always told who to be and what to think, and not to question anything. All I knew was βbehave until this system is over, and then be good in the new world. Do as your told.β
I was homeschooled until grade 11, and I lived out in the country. As an only child with both parents working, I spent my days alone. I actually βmetβ this girl through a writing group we were both in through our homeschool program. She lived on a farm another 3 hours away from town, and didnβt know much about the βcivilizedβ world.
Anyway. She came to public school in my grade 12 year, we hated each other at first, and then eventually we got close. Then we were inseparable until last year.
All the comments saying how narcissistic and gaslighting she was really opened my eyes. She was NOT my friend, and she had been using me for her own gain. She screwed me out of literal thousands of dollars a couple times (one was from an MLM scheme, another was when we started a business together which she then βpromisedβ to buy out my half and never did. She owed me so much money, and then kept rubbing in my face that her boyfriend kept taking her to expensive spas and restaurants in the city and bought her expensive clothes. While I struggled to pay my bills because work was slow and she promised to pay me little bits every month and didnβt. Then she didnβt understand why I wasnβt happy to hear about her adventures with the guy who almost took my dog away from me)
I digress.
She did not come to the wedding at all, and the wedding was awesome! We had so much fun, several things didnβt work out as planned but we didnβt care. It was our day and she wasnβt there to take that away from us!
Many people said they think she was jealous or in love with me, and I think so too. One time I went viral on TikTok and she tried to use my new followers for her own gain. And she had said years ago that if she were a guy, sheβd want to marry me.
Even thinking about that gives me the ick.
Anyway, the last time I spoke to her was in October and Iβm never speaking to her again. Hubs and I are living our best life, and she can go to hell!
Also big thanks to
u/LucyAriaRose for posting this and doing all that work of transcribing the mess that was my life! π

Do you guys use any other apps to make money on games.? I have mistplay and cash giraffe, but the money you make is so small and it doesnt feel like it accurately tracks the time. I use surveyjunkie as well, its ok when you can actually take a survey, and they have special do 3 surveys a day for 7 days over a set period for a 5 dollar bonus.
