2024.05.14 04:28 gdo22 I think I fell for a scam.

I think I fell for a scam.
Someone called the store saying it was Bryan Ragsdale from Jimmy John's HQ, and wanted me to do a whole bunch of stuff that distracted from me doing my closing duties-- relating to an audit he needed to do as part of a federal investigation because some tax money he said came up short from my store. He said it was confidential-- don't tell anyone else about this, as it is an ongoing investigation that could involve them. He said two people who work there were going to be arrested the next day. He called me from HQ according to the caller ID, but after everything he asked me to do-- arranging and counting all the money we had, opening the deposits to make sure the amounts in there were correct, giving him my cell phone number so I could be mobile while we talked, he finally asked me to make an emergency deposit of all the bills in the store. I told him I didn't feel comfortable with doing that, for a number of reasons, and that's when it dawned on me that I'd been had-- he kept insisting that this was the only way forward.
I did what I could off the clock to fix things, since I spent so much time on the clock screwing things up. No one told me I had to be off the clock to do that-- that's just the way I am.
But he added about 1.5 hours on the clock to my close-- dealing with him and his requests-- that I wouldn't have spent if I had not fallen for his trick. So for future closes that I do, should I undercount my hours until I make up that time? Like maybe if I close at 10 pm, clock myself out at 9:50pm, and then do that 9 times until my 1.5 hours extra is made up?
I want to note again that nobody is pressuring me to do that. I just personally feel like I took a lot of the company's time for some b.s. and don't want to punish them for my mistake.
Let me know as you're able to, if you'd like. Thanks!
Attached is some of what he asked me to write down. Also the result that came up when I Googled a phone number he called from.

2024.05.13 12:50 Smart_Ibis Trouble due to business address obtaining a unique entity ID from SAM: Any ideas?

I am a bit out of ideas, and was hoping someone in this community may be able to help. I have created an LLC in in the state of Maryland, that was formed in March of this year. I plan on applying for an NIH SBIR for the September deadline, and am trying to complete the processes necessary to apply for government grants and funding. Right now, I am being blocked at the first step of registering in the Systems Award Manager (SAM): obtaining a unique entity ID.
I have provided certified copies of the business’s Articles of Organization as well as it’s Certificate of Good Standing . This is the response I get back, rejecting my business address:
“Unfortunately we are unable to confirm your address with the documentation provided. The address you entered in Sam.gov populates as a Co-Working space for For Shared Office/Work Spaces exceptions, entity must provide their 2023 federal tax documents, along with proof of filing, that contain the name and address of your entity. If you are unable to provide the requested documentation you must provide a different address for registration.
We do not accept PO Boxes, Personal Mailboxes, Forward Mailing Address, or Virtual Addresses including hired registered agents and incorporator services. Per GSA guidelines, a physical address, not mailing address, for your entity is required. For a physical address to be valid, it must satisfy one of the following conditions 1) Business is consistently conducted at this address or 2) Business records are securely kept at this address.”
My partner and I do consistently meet in this space (it is a co-working building), as well as receive our mail here, and it is fine by Maryland standards. We have not filed taxes because we did not exist last year. It is a tech company, and since it is Phase 1 we are applying for, we certainly do not have the means to have our own dedicated office space, nor is it necessary. Our home addresses are not an option.

2024.05.13 06:37 Royal-Bit-3896 Great Lease Price ?

Great Lease Price ?
Hey guys I want your opinion, today I decided to go in and check out the 2023 ID-4 Pro S, ended up getting this white one with black interior, MSRP almost 52.000 USD but they were trying to get rid of them so they had a 17.500 rebate 10.000 VW and dealer + 7500 federal, plus another 1500 off from the dealer, initially the payment was gonna around 550.00 USD a month but at the end I noticed that they were adding some additional warranties that I didn’t want , so I took them off ended up with around 450 USD monthly payment with 2000 USD down payment including taxes and fees . Is it a good deal ? 36 month - 10k miles a year

2024.05.13 06:27 Celtisota National Park Ranger Warning

Hi all from Reddit:
What is a warning issued by the National Park Ranger (no ticket issued but ID checked)? We went into a prohibited trail but were then met by a National Park Ranger and this ranger gave a warning - "Whenever next time you visited National Parks / Forests, this warning will be attached to your ID and can be seen in the federal system". This "federal system" is ambiguous to me, is it also relevant to any Federal government system and might leave a record as some "non-criminal" history seen in my credit (SSN) or tax (IRS)?
I was in the Rocky Mountains National Park these days for traveling and went into a trail that was closed ("Road closed" sign was erected in the parking lot for entering this path and this sign intended to block out the road). Our group of six people did really not want to miss the view of this trial, so decided to ignore it by parking in a nearby sideway park spot and went to this trail... After walking a while, another sign saying "DO NOT ENTER" was present by adding "for safety conditions (Elk very active)". We ignored it too and viewed the scene.
On our way back to the car, the Ranger drover his car and stopped us. He caught us up, checked the ID, had a few rounds of friendly questions to know what has happened and then educate us a bit for the safety concern, left the warning I mentioned in the first place and then gone. After calming down, I'm kinda interpreting this situation outcome as that we went over the speed and were pulled over in the highway by the police. Then we were given an oral warning without a speeding ticket. Could anyone give thoughts on it?
Thank you!

2024.05.12 19:30 Simrealz 35 [M4F] Virginia, DC, or Online - Witty, Nerdy, and Ambitious Guy Seeking a Partner With a Growth Mindset.

Hey there! Thanks for stopping by - this is going to be a long one, but I promise you it will be worth it.
First, I'll tell you my basic "Stats": I'm male, of European descent. Specifically I have some Swedish and Italian ancestors. To be honest that doesn't mean too much to me, except that I will always love making the two Swedish recipes I learned from my Grandmother. Crap, I'm getting sidetracked already. Anyway, stats... I'm 6'1" so unless you're super tall you are in the clear to wear heals or be a jetpack, whatever floats your boat. For my career I survived the whole law school thing and currently work as a Lawyer. Not a super boogie lawyer mind you but I do okay and I'm really starting to love my job. I work for the federal gov so my work life balance is great!
Don't worry, I have flaws too. I have ADHD, which means .... well, it means a lot of things. Sometimes if I get really interested in something (a case at work or a hobby, usually) I can get so into it that its basically a super power. However, it also means I'm usually pretty high energy in social situations and that isn't always everyone's cup of tea. I wear my emotions on my sleeve - there won't be any hiding anything from you, good or bad because I just straight up can't hide it lol. I also get a bit of anxiety as a result of some ADHD symptoms, but now that I recognize the cause it is way more manageable. The reason I'm telling you all this is... if you want to date me we need to be able to have open and honest communication about mental health.
Lets talk nerdyness. Yup, who would have guessed it the redditor is self identifying as a nerd, sound the alarms! Anyway. I am a serious fan of all things Star Trek, but I'm willing to watch the Star Wars shows with you, I guess. I enjoy anime, video games, board games, and all that type of fun stuff. Comedies like Parks and Rec, The Office, IT Crowd, and What We Do in the Shadows are my jam. I'm not sure if Karaoke is "nerdy" but I'm also into that - my friend group has Karaoke house parties and I will always be up for finding a small karaoke bar with private rooms while on a vacation. Ask me about my go to songs!
Lets talk gaming. Its a cliche but... be my player 2! If you want to play Stardew Valley together and design a super cute farm please hit me up! I like most multiplayer games and I usually play on PC, although I do have a switch. Recently I've been into Teamfight Tactics and Helldivers 2 as my primary games. With regards to board games, I'm pretty much down for anything but I love social deduction games. My favorite is Deception: Murder in Hong Kong. Overall, keeping it casual is good with me, or we can play something competitive when the group is down for it.
Lets talk fitness. To be real with you, I have a bit of a dad bod right now which I am motivated to work on improving. No one says I'm "fat" when they look at me, but I could stand to lose a little weight and tone up. I'm traveling during June, but my plan is to get a personal trainer once all that traveling is done in July. We could get one together someday if you want. I think accepting my ADHD more has made me realize I need some sort of accountability like a trainer to stay on track, and I can finally afford it! Anyway - I'd love to get into some physical hobbies with my partner and motivate each other to stay fit. In the past I've enjoyed rock climbing, skiing, running, and yoga. I'm also always down to hit up the local park for a walk.
Lets talk animals. I have a cat and she's awesome but she's also a princess; you gotta learn her quirks. I take her on walks (sometimes she cooperates with a leash, usually she's in the backpack). I'll happily provide you the cat tax early in our conversation!
Lets talk dealbreakers. I'm on the liberal end of things even though I'm not particularly political. I enjoy alcohol/weed socially but don't consume much at home. Cigarettes are a hard no, but vaping is fine even though its not my thing. Another potential dealbreaker is that I can't relocate away from the Washington DC area anytime soon due to my job. I'm not necessarily opposed to moving to another part of the country, but I can't right now, and moving outside the U.S. isn't really an option for me.
If you read this, or most of it, and you think I sound cool, drop me a message or a DM. FYI, I tend to prefer to share pictures pretty early on since physical attraction is important, but I can respect it if you want to wait a little while. Let me know how you're feeling! 25+ preferred.

2024.05.12 18:43 DrStrangerITThings Does the math and logic here "math out" for selling my paid off Tesla?

Hey Guys,
I have a dilema. I bought a Y last year and paid it in FULL all cash about 38.5k (afer federal febate/no tax state)
Since then i have driven like 5k miles only so pretty new, but someone did sideswipe the side of the car the first month in a hit in run. It has a little bit of a mark but overall autoshop was able to buff most of it out.
Tesla is having 1% financing right now .
It would cost me $39,543.04 to buy a NEW car and i can sell my current one for 32,800.
Yes i know i will be taking a 6.5k hit in depreciation, but i am thinking even if i throw the money into a 5 year CD i will get back 5k garuntee interest @ ~4% or invest part of it into the SP500- in 5 years time it should make up for the 6k.
Essentially i'd be getting a new car without damage and i'd also get my money back so i can invest it (safely) over the next 5 years instead of having a paid off car. The interest payment on 39k at 1% is like 1k over 5 years so its practically free money..
Is this smart thing to do?

2024.05.12 14:24 TheLotStore Where to Look for Low Cost Land for Sale: A Comprehensive Guide

Where to Look for Low Cost Land for Sale: A Comprehensive Guide
Where to Look for Low Cost Land for Sale: A Comprehensive Guide
Discovering Where to Look for Cost-Effective Property for Purchase: A Thorough HandbookIf you have ever envisioned owning your own parcel of land, you may have felt disheartened by the substantial expenses connected to land acquisitions. Nevertheless, opportunities do exist to acquire cost-effective land, if you are aware of where to search. Whether your intention is to procure land for investment purposes, construction of a residence, or purely for leisure use, this extensive guide will grant you the resources and insight required to locate the finest cost-effective land for purchase.1. Investigating Local Market ConditionsThe first stage in locating low-cost land involves examining local market conditions. Land values can fluctuate considerably from one locality to another, and even within the same vicinity. Elements such as positioning, ease of access, zoning statutes, and closeness to amenities can all influence the price of land. By comprehending the local market conditions, you can perceive areas where land values are reduced and concentrate your search in those locales.Commence by surveying local real estate listings and consulting local real estate agents to gain an understanding of ongoing market patterns. Be attentive to areas undergoing expansion and gentrification, as these areas may offer potential prospects for cost-effective land. Additionally, contemplate inspecting areas that are as yet undeveloped but have potential for future advancement, as land values in these zones may be lower.2. Government Land Sales and AuctionsAnother avenue to explore when seeking low-cost land is government land sales and auctions. Government agencies at the federal, state, and local levels often offload land that is no longer required for public use, or that has been confiscated due to tax arrears or other causes. These transactions and auctions can provide an excellent chance to acquire land at rates below the prevailing market prices.Initiate your inquiry by perusing the websites of federal, state, and local governmental bodies to ascertain information about forthcoming land sales and auctions. You can also directly contact these agencies to inquire about accessible land and upcoming sales events. Additionally, consider collaborating with a real estate agent specializing in government land sales, as they can assist you in navigating the process and pinpointing the best opportunities for cost-effective land.3. Foreclosure SalesForeclosure sales are another potential origin of prospects for cost-effective land. When individuals or businesses default on their mortgage installments, the lender may foreclose on the property and vend it to recoup their investments. This can present opportunities to procure land at rates below the prevailing market prices, as lenders are often keen on quick sales of foreclosed properties. To locate foreclosure sales in your locality, you can explore real estate listings or engage a real estate agent specializing in foreclosures. Additionally, you can consult local banks and financial institutions to ascertain if they have any assets available for sale due to foreclosure. Be mindful that the process of buying a foreclosed property can be more intricate than a standard sale, so it is essential to conduct comprehensive research and due diligence before making a proposition.4. Land for Sale by OwnerOne of the most straightforward ways to locate cost-effective land for sale is to seek out properties being sold directly by their owners. Occasionally, landholders are eager to expedite the sale of their property and may be open to negotiating the price to secure a swift transaction. By searching for properties for sale by the owner, you can potentially stumble upon deals not available through customary real estate listings. You can pinpoint land for sale by owner by canvassing classified advertisements in local newspapers, online listings, and social media groups. Furthermore, consider traversing locales where you are keen on acquiring land and scouting for "For Sale" boards on properties. Once you identify a property of interest, you can directly communicate with the owner to discuss the sale and negotiate a purchasing price.5. Property AuctionsProperty auctions can serve as an excellent technique to encounter cost-effective land for sale, as properties are often transferred to the highest bidder, potentially leading to prices below market value. Several forms of property auctions are worth considering, including conventional live auctions, online auctions, and tax lien auctions.Conduct a survey of local auction houses and online auction platforms to discern upcoming property auctions in your vicinity. Additionally, check with local county tax offices to ascertain if they conduct tax lien auctions, as this can present a fantastic opportunity to procure land at a discounted price. Keep in mind that partaking in an auction mandates prudently planned steps and a thorough comprehension of the auction process, so ensure to conduct your groundwork before participating in any auctions.6. Rural and Undeveloped ZonesIf you are open to contemplating the purchase of land in rural or undeveloped areas, you may have a broader array of options to encounter cost-effective land. Rural zones typically feature reduced land values compared to urban or suburban areas, and undeveloped land might be available at a lower expense due to the absence of infrastructure and amenities.Contemplate exploring rural areas or territories not yet fully developed to find potential opportunities for cost-effective land. Bear in mind that procuring land in rural areas may necessitate additional deliberations, such as access to utilities, zoning statutes, and building constraints. Nevertheless, if you are prepared to engage in research and are open to less developed areas, you might encounter substantial opportunities for cost-effective land.7. Land Trusts and Conservation OrganizationsLand trusts and conservation organizations can prove to be a valuable resource for encountering cost-effective land, especially if you are inclined towards preserving natural landscapes or wildlife habitats. These organizations frequently acquire land for conservation objectives and might be amenable to selling or leasing properties at rates below the market to individuals or organizations that share their conservation aspirations.Investigate local and nationwide land trusts and conservation organizations to discern potential land opportunities. Numerous of these organizations offer programs explicitly designed to assist individuals in acquiring or leasing land for conservation or recreational pursuits. By establishing connections with these organizations, you may come across distinctive prospects for cost-effective land that correspond to your conservation and recreational inclinations.8. Networking and Word of MouthLastly, do not overlook the influence of networking and word of mouth in identifying cost-effective land for sale. By establishing connections with local inhabitants, real estate experts, and other landholders, you might gain access to prospects not extensively publicized. Furthermore, spreading the word about your pursuit of procuring land could result in referrals and introductions to individuals keen on selling their property.Attend local communal events, participate in social groups, and engage in online forums and social media groups to get in touch with individuals who might possess knowledge of cost-effective land opportunities. By forming a network of contacts and actively sharing your land quest, you might uncover hidden gems that are not readily found through standard real estate channels. To conclude, uncovering cost-effective land for sale necessitates innovation, perseverance, and a disposition to explore unconventional sources. By exploring local market conditions, scrutinizing government land sales and auctions, considering foreclosure sales, seeking out properties for sale by owner, partaking in property auctions, exploring rural and undeveloped zones, connecting with land trusts and conservation organizations, and making use of networking and word of mouth, you can heighten your prospects of encountering the best cost-effective land opportunities. With scrupulous research and due diligence, you can realize your aspiration of owning affordable land and transforming it into the ideal locale for your future home, investment, or recreational getaway.

2024.05.11 21:39 ADepressedMemester Cancelling an installment plan with the IRS

When filing a return this year, I asked for an installment plan for owed federal taxes, as I just moved and didn't have the money to pay. I got a letter in the mail yesterday with my agreement and notice that they're charging me a $225 fee just for the installment plan, when I only owe slightly less than $600. I decided I'd rather just empty my savings and pay what I owe at once but am not sure how I go about this. Am I stuck with the installment agreement?
I tried going to the IRS website and viewing my balance but it said it wasn't available.
TIA!

2024.05.11 19:16 PsyMukChris Dead Car & Title Loan

TLDR: Current car is dead but has $16k in loans against it, and I need to get rid of it to get a functional car.
Full story: I have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata that is for all intents and purposes, dead. It has a fully clogged catalytic converter, seems to be a failing fuel pump, and the engine jolts and shakes. I originally got the car with 14,000 miles on it 10 years ago and it's done me well (now has 193,000 miles on it).
Right around when I had first paid it off I moved to a new area and with my credit not in great shape, I ended up taking out a title loan against it. The payments on that were somewhat manageable while I was doing doordash in addition to my regular job but the interest was around 67%.
I ended up refinancing with One Main which brought the interest "down" to 36% but they gave me a decent principal increase when I refinanced. I used that cash to pay off other payday loans I had with exorbitant interest and between work being busy at the time (I'm in sales) and doing doordash occasionally it was fine.
However, this winter, work went through a bit of a lull and the car got gradually worse to where now it is realistically undriveable (stalls constantly and no/minimal power when trying to accelerate). Because of how tight things have been lately, I don't have much money (maybe $1,000) to put towards a new (to me) car.
I've been to a dealership and found a great deal on a 2021 Chevy Bolt EV with 11k miles on it and they'll even give me $1k for my Sonata (EVs are not popular here so they want it gone). That car is listed for $17,495 and they would be able to apply the $4000 IL State EV Rebate to it to drop it to $13,495 (plus I'd qualify for a $4,000 federal tax credit).
The problem is with all the negative equity (my payoff amount on the One Main loan is ~$16,000) and my poor credit (560-580 range) they're having a hard time getting a bank to sign off on the loan. I could likely get approved without the trade-in, but I don't know what to do with the Sonata then.
My credit had been sub 500 and I've worked hard to get it to where it is now and know I still have a lot of work to do. I know I could let the Sonata be repo'd or I could voluntarily turn it in, but that would be a major black mark on my credit.
I like the idea of an EV because it would make doordash more profitable because electricity is cheaper than gas, and it eliminates oil changes and the like. Plus my industry is busy in the summer and slow in the winter so having a good tax return from the rebate would be a godsend. Charging infrastructure here is not super robust but enough to support my normal commute, doordashing and any moderate trips I might take, plus it's starting to grow here.
There's no way I can logistically or financially keep 2 cars (the Sonata needs to be registered and insured for the one main loan and to be on my driveway, per my lease) and I need a car to get to work. No public transport here and no real uber or lyft drivers to where it's even remotely reliable. I do have an ebike (I sell them) to get around on but I can't not work when it rains and it won't be a real option in the winter either.
I know a trusted mechanic selling an older Corolla with 200k miles that's supposedly in great shape for $2000-2500, but I'd still have the issue of not knowing what to do with the Sonata and its not like a 200k mile car is going to last me all that long. And trying to come up with $2k plus title, registration, tax, insurance all out of pocket would be a major stretch if not impossible.
So the question is, what do I do with the Sonata?

2024.05.11 15:43 Lower_Coffee_4687 Virginia Refund Verification

Goodmorning, my gf filed 3/19 and was told on 4/18 over the phone that she needed to verify ID. Transcript says no return filed. After looking out for a letter from the IRS we decided to clear out some older mail when we found a Virginia refund verification letter dated 3/25 send from the Virginia taxpayers office. My question is does this refund verification letter hold up the federal taxes as well? Or was this strictly for state? Can’t find answers anywhere.

Lets talk gaming. Its a cliche but... be my player 2! If you want to play Stardew Valley together please hit me up! I like most games and I usually play on PC, although I do have a switch.
No one says I'm "fat", but I could stand to lose a little weight and tone up. In the past I've enjoyed rock climbing, skiing, and running, and yoga. I'm also always down to hit up the local park for a walk.
Lets talk animals. I have a cat and she's awesome but she's also a princess; you gotta learn her quirks. I take her on walks (sometimes she cooperates with a leash, usually she's in the backpack). I'll happily provide you the cat tax early in our convo!
Lets talk dealbreakers. I'll be real, I don't think I could date a Trump supporter, sorry. I'm on the liberal end of things even though I'm not particularly political. I enjoy alcohol/weed socially but don't consume much at home. Cigarettes are a hard no, but vaping is fine even though its not my thing.
If you read this, or most of it, and you think I sound cool, drop me a message or a DM. FYI, I tend to prefer to share pictures pretty early on since physical attraction is important, but I can respect it if you want to wait a little while. Let me know how you're feeling! 25+ and please be located at least in USA / Canada.

2024.05.11 06:05 AdIcy718 please help me make a decision: uf/ fsu honors or cornell.

first i want to start off by recognizing how privileged i am to be able to choose between schools like this. truly incredibly blessed and happy, thanks to everyone who made this possible. now onto the real question: where do i go? i am having a really hard time decided. for background i plan on majoring in math related to finance and going to law school in the future. i’ve also thought about political science as a minor if that’s important. financially speaking, uf is covered in terms of tuition thanks to bright futures in florida. bright futures also covers health and transportation fees. i live about two and a half hours from uf so i’ve had the chance to tour it and i liked it. i did not like gainesville and am a little afraid that if i go to uf, my ability to find internships will be slightly limited. i was pretty disappointed when i wasn’t admitted to the honors program too bc i wanted those small classes and rigorous teachers to challenge me. i also have not found housing which i estimate will be around 2-3k and maybe want a meal plan which is likely another 2-3k. i do not completely understand my financial aid package so im just going to describe it here:
Hobe & Gertrude Hooser Sch (1 yr): $1000 Gift Aid: $7,400 (1 yr) Federal work study: $3000 (1 yr) Work study total (1 yr): $3000
some pros to consider for uf: from what i understand, if you do well and work hard, do well on the lsats, etc, you can get into an excellent law school. a girl this yr i knew in hs graduated uf and is going to harvard full ride for a masters program. they boast on their website about students getting into harvard yale etc law schools. its also close to home if i have any issues. lots of my peers plan on attending which comes with pros and cons.
now onto cornell. obviously it’s a great school. i haven’t gotten the chance to see it but from the research i’ve done, it looks beautiful. i don’t know much about ithaca (so if you do please let me know!) going to an ivy league school was always my original goal since middle school. i thought at the beginning of this process i would definitely go out of state, but with graduation and everything coming up, im not sure anymore. maybe im just sad and reminiscing because i know id thrive in a challenging school like cornell. i feel guilty leaving my younger siblings behind. i don’t know if id regret leaving my family or not taking this chance more. for financial aid here’s the description: expected student contribution: $0 parent contribution: $9000 1 yr work study: $5000 1 yr outside scholarship: $1000 1 yr federal direct loan: $1000 1 yr
i think it’s also important to note that next year, i will have a zero expected parent and student contribution based on the 2023 taxes my parents are filing estimates.
any help making this decision would be really appreciated. my parents are pushing me to attend UF but im not sure if im turning down a huge opportunity with cornell. i also wanted to say that i am kinda considering fsu since i got into their honors program, also tuition paid for plus a couple scholarships and need based aid, and the proximity to the capital might help me out for prelaw. more of my “good friends” are attending fsu, i like their sports culture, and i have some connections at tallahassee with a popular lawyer and a couple state legislators.
thank you SO SO SO MUCH!!!!

2024.05.10 21:02 AnonymovsUser State Capital Gains Tax

My situation is as follows — I am a 22 year old college senior graduating in May. January through May I lived in Indiana while at school. In June I will be living in IL at my parents’ apartment in Chicago for a month until finding my own place to move into July 1. I will be supporting myself & living alone July through December, and will therefore be filing as independent. My parents own a home in CA and are considered CA residents. Outside of a 4 day visit to CA in late June, I will not otherwise be stepping foot in the state this year. My bank accounts and car have been linked to IL since the start of the year, and in early May I received an IL ID and registered to vote in the state.
In January, I realized a capital gain on the sale of stocks. I plan on realizing another gain at some point later this year. My ultimate goal is to avoid paying tax on this gain outside the federal tax and IL state tax which I believe I will owe. My understanding is that once I am considered an IL resident, I would only owe IL (and not CA or IN) state tax on any capital gains. Is this true?
Moreover, when would I “officially” be considered an IL resident? At what point could I realize a gain and only owe IL state tax? Would I owe CA state tax at all on the gain I realized in January?
I know this is a lot and I am contemplating consulting a tax professional. Outside of not really knowing how to go about finding one, I’m not sure my situation is even as complex as I think it is, so any and all help would be much appreciated :)

Crude Corruption

Disgraced former president Donald Trump asked oil executives for $1 billion to help his campaign. You’ll never guess what he offered them in exchange (hint: it’s the climate).
Partisanship is partly to blame for making voters tune out Biden's achievements in this area. But millions of GOP moderates and independents are also waiting for a reason to abandon Trump. Maybe they’d like to know that Trump is promising to kill electric cars in exchange for cold, hard cash.

Under The Radar

TikTok announced today it will start automatically labeling AI-generated content, including artificial images made with TikTok’s AI effects and shared elsewhere. That’s a bit of good news as the U.S. heads into its first presidential election in the age of AI. At the same time, it points to a much bigger problem: the dangerous collision between AI and politics. And we’re not just talking about the “Drunk Nancy Pelosi” deepfake.
It has become shockingly easy to generate deepfake content of politicians, newsmakers, or anyone else. Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes proved exactly that point to unnerved election officials at an election safety seminar this week. TikTok’s new policy makes it slightly trickier to blast totally artificial content into global public view, but hardly impossible, especially for determined bad actors.
Of course, this change does nothing to counter another very real danger: how authentic content is selectively delivered to inflame specific audiences. After all, this will be an election in which one of the two main candidacies is based on false information about the 2020 election and orbited by a constellation of other lies. TikTok, of course, is clearly looking for “responsible actor” press while facing a potential forced sale or ban in the U.S. But, still, hooray for TikTok, thanks for reminding us how full of artificially-enhanced videos of dancing cats you truly are.

What Else?

Barron Trump was selected as a Florida delegate-at-large (no relation to his massive height) to the Republican National Convention. Barron, who turned 18 in March, is making his first move into politics, joining half-siblings Don Jr., Eric and Tiffany as delegates. This job should be fairly easy since the GOP literally had no party platform the last time Trump ran in 2020. Barron: you’re young! There’s still time to save yourself!
The Biden Administration is expected to soon release a new rule designed to speed up the processing of asylum claims for many migrants crossing the southern border, NBC News reported, citing unnamed sources. The move is designed to make it faster and easier to deny entry to migrants with criminal records or who are deemed a national security risk.
Medical school graduates are starting to avoid states with abortion bans or new post-Dobbs restrictions when choosing their residencies, according to data from the Association of American Medical Colleges. New residencies are down 4.2% in states with near-total abortion bans, compared to just 0.6% overall. The difference is even deeper for graduates entering OB/GYN residencies.
An appeals court rejected Hunter Biden’s attempt to throw out federal gun charges, clearing the way for him to go to trial next month. Biden is charged with false statements and with illegally possessing a firearm while using drugs in 2018. He faces separate federal tax charges in California.
Donald Trump got some moral (well, amoral, at best) support from friends at his Manhattan election interference trial today. MAGA Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) and Jeanine Pirro (R-FoxNews) both turned up at the courthouse today. So far Eric Trump is only one of Trump’s kids to attend. Melania has been noticeably absent. She’s probably just SUPER busy.

Doctors in China appear to have cured Type II diabetes in a patient using stem cell transplants.
The state of Utah set up a tip line to encourage Utahans to snitch on trans people who “violate” the state’s public bathroom law. Trans activists and allies responded to this by flooding the line with thousands of fake reports, rendering the whole thing as useless in reality as it was cruel and wrong-headed in conception. Even the state auditor tasked with following up these calls accused the legislature of taking a “ham-handed approach.” Prank calls for good, we love to see it!

2024.05.10 10:42 Human_Worry8399 Have I been cheated out of my pay ?!

For some context, I have been working as a QA for almost month now, I started mid April and was paid on 5/10, I get paid 16 an hour for QA but as you can see I put in 34.54 on my timecard, which is 500$ and some change in the state of FL, I feel like I have been cheated because I didn’t put those hours before the supposed pay period start and end, I put all 34.54 hours after the first of May, have I been cheated of my pay ?!

2024.05.10 03:47 marteeeenn Gut check - seems sketch. 5.72 kW Solar System from Green Power Network in SoCal

Title: Seeking Advice on solar!
Body:
Hey everyone,
I'm considering switching to solar and would love some advice. A company called Green Power Network came and knocked on my door, claiming to not be salespeople, but helping people analyze their electric bills and applying for state funded programs. Was smooth sailing until they pulled a credit check and contract signature at the end of their process, wife was sold so we let it go through. Now they're just barreling ahead, scheduling inspections with contractors, etc. and I'm still doing the math on if it even makes sense for my situation. All details below:
Current Electricity Usage:
System Offered:
Red Flags:
Concerns:
  1. System Size: 5.72 kW only offsets 63% of my current usage (~11,485 kWh/year vs. ~18,228 kWh/year).
  2. Loan Payment:
    • Initial 18 months: $164/month vs. ~$118/month in expected savings (net loss of $46/month).
    • Remaining term: $241/month vs. ~$118/month in expected savings (net loss of $123/month).
  3. Need a Bigger System: I calculated that I'd need a 9.1 kW system to offset 100% of my usage.
What Would You Do?

2024.05.09 19:54 J-Dissenting Primer on Setting Up a Media Company

I'm a lawyer who works primarily in the digital entertainment and media space, and I can't tell you how horribly many multi-million dollar media companies are set up, especially from an investor standpoint. There are a lot of such companies founded by content creators, advised by inexperienced/incompetent counsel (if at all), and I'm hoping that by writing this post, it will reach Destiny and he can avoid some common pitfalls.
There are attorneys who bill >$600/hour to give this basic-ass advice and you're all getting it for free. You're welcome. This is like super basic stuff, so maybe Destiny has it covered, idk. I'm not actually in his walls.
Basic Checklist
Here's a 30,000 feet checklist of things to be concerned about. I'm sure Destiny is aware of them at a basic level. I'll separately break down each one, and the common pitfalls I've seen.
IP Ownership
While I'm sure Destiny likely has work-for-hire provisions in all of his independent contractor agreements (I'm assuming he has no W2 employees at this point), that's not the end-all-be-all of IP ownership. First, he needs to make sure it's clear who the IP is assigned to. It should be assigned to the existing LLC, whatever it is, and not Steven Bonnell II. This means that the operative party in the IC agreements must all be the applicable LLC or the applicable LLC must as least be named as a 3rd party beneficiary and the assignment is explicitly to the LLC. If he is setting up a new umbrella company (assuming he has separate entities for each podcast/DGG/YouTube channels/etc.), he has to make sure the umbrella company is the owner of the IP. This means executing IP assignment agreements from the existing rightsholder to the umbrella company. Simple to do.
Make sure the timing of the WFH IC agreements line up. If Kyla did some work for Bridges in January, 2023, and then signed a WFH IC agreement in April, 2023, the January work was not assigned under the WFH provision. It is legally owned by Kyla unless the IC agreement also contained a broader IP assignment provision. In this instance, Kyla needs to separately execute an IP assignment agreement to cover the stuff that predates the WFH IC agreement's execution date.
There's a lot more detail here, but this is just the very basic stuff.
Why does this matter? Kyla will never sue Steven for IP infringement probably. Ok, but investors give a shit. If Destiny's media company goes "mainstream", all of this will come out in diligence. At best, the investor will require all these IP assignment agreements to be executed as part of diligence. At worst, they back out. Realistically, it impacts the valuation of the company. If you're staring at a >$10m investment (which is small, btw), you are guaranteed to have lawyers and consultants poking through this shit.
3rd Party Agreements
Obviously make sure all 3rd party software is being used under the correct license. If you're using AI, make sure you're reviewing the TOS on commercial use of the output, the AI providevendor's rights, etc. If you're using 3rd party font, make sure you've purchased the correct license. This is either super complex or very basic depending on how much 3rd party IP and services you're using. If you're sharing any user data with 3rd party vendors, make sure you're compliant with applicable data privacy laws. Etc.
These also include partnership agreements, brand sponsorships, etc. These are unique and impossible to generalize. Highly recommend counsel for this type of shit.
Employees v Contractors
Content creators love contractors. It's simple, you don't need to provide any benefits, and it's very easy. But someone isn't a contractor just because you call them contractors. Misclassification of employees can cause huge liabilities. The IRS doesn't play around. There are legitimate reasons why you want employees and not contractors, and of course, you'd have to set up all of the requisite benefits if you do have employees. This is a lot more in-depth and you would want to retain counsel to work through this process. TL;DR: don't be running a 10+ million dollar company with 0 employees and 50 "independent contractors".
Legal Compliance
The more you do, the more you have to worry about. Are you going to be advertising (on a much greater scale than a subreddit post, like buying programmatic ads)? Seek counsel. The FTC doesn't play around. Not going to be advertising? Then don't worry about it. Are you going to be collecting user data? Seek counsel. 9 times out of 10, a company is actually collecting user data even though they believe they aren't.
There are laws about automatic renewals. There are laws about TOS and disclosures. Hard to give generalized advice about compliance without knowing what exactly the company is going to do other than just keep this shit on your radar. Running sweepstakes or contests? Consult counsel. Be aware of ADA requirements, if applicable. Etc.
Taxes
This is the thing Destiny most likely already has handled. Use 3rd party providers for this until you've scaled to the point where hiring in-house accounting makes sense. I'd recommend hiring a consultant at the outset to make sure everything is set up correctly and running smoothly between the company and the 3rd party providers.
DMCA/UGC/Content Moderation
If the media company is going to be hosting user generated content, make sure your platform is DMCA compliant so you're within the safe harbor. Simple to set up, but you need a DMCA agent as well. If you are doing content moderation, especially if it's political content moderation, be aware of proposed state laws like Florida HB3 (https://www.flgov.com/2024/03/25/governor-desantis-signs-legislation-to-protect-children-and-uphold-parental-rights/) and Texas HB20 (https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/news/releases/attorney-general-ken-paxton-defends-texas-law-prohibiting-big-tech-censorship-scotus#:\~:text=In%202021%2C%20Texas%20adopted%20a,censoring%20users'%20constitutionally%20protected%20speech.). These laws might be unconstitutional (TBD) and would likely not apply to any of Destiny's businesses (due to user base size/revenue cutoffs), but if the business scales, worth keeping an eye on this stuff. In any case, content moderation is increasingly regulated in the US so keep an eye on that shit. See also California AB587.
Purchase Policy
This is FTC stuff. If everything is merging under an umbrella (advisable, tbh), make sure things like refund policies, shipping, comply with any applicable FTC rules.
Closing Thoughts
Just looking at the DGG site alone with no other knowledge of the business(es):
Entity structure as a whole is related to all of these so I didn't talk about it specifically. Also probably doesn't need to be said, but it's a good idea to maintain an keep updated an intranet, built like a data room, for all agreements/docs/invoices/etc.
