I’m no mathematician, but as someone who doesn’t want to buy a speed gun, I’ve been looking into ways to use video analysis to calculate serve speed for a while. All I wanted when I began this process was a simple formula that would approximate my serve speed with some degree of accuracy.
I began by researching the topic on the tw forums and the main sticking point seemed to be how to account for air drag, as “serve speed” is off the racket, not its average speed over time. I decided to look for some atp highlights and collect a sample of serves to see what air drag coefficient would, when multiplied by the average serve speed before the bounce, equal the official radar speed.
It was simplest to use serves that hit or almost hit the line as this always means that the ball will have traveled about 60 feet from contact to bounce. It turned out that the average speed before the bounce was about 20% less than the official radar speed, with an error of no more than 5mph at 25 frames per second.
S = serve speed in mph T = time from contact to bounce in seconds 0.818=1.2/1.467 where 1.2 converts avg speed to initial speed and dividing by 1.467 converts ft/s into mph.
S ≈ 0.818(60/T)
leaving it unsimplified so you can change 60 if you want.
I didn’t do this scientifically, didn’t collect data from different altitudes and humidities or anything like that, but every so often I use tennis tv highlights to check if the formula still works and it seems to. Someone could do a much better job at this but it’s good enough for me.
It tends to underestimate the speed of serves shorter than 60ft because it assumes 60ft of deceleration, so keep that in mind if you for example try to approximate the speed of a 55ft serve. I eyeballed several of these from the Paul vs Medvedev match yesterday and the formula was 5-7mph low most of the time. Likewise for wide serves you can use 61ft to account for diagonal distance. I’m ignoring server height because it only varies by a few feet at most.
Finally, I know many people here will say serve speed doesn’t matter. This obviously isn’t true. Faster serves are harder to return and also an indicator of better technique. That’s not to say targeting doesn’t matter, but as we are all trying to improve our serve technique, the fact of it getting faster is a clear indication of progress.
I hope this helps someone, it’s helped me. Btw I think someone made an online tool that does this a while ago where you can more precisely tinker with the serve distance, but I can’t find it anymore. In any case I like to just pull out my calculator and come up with an estimation in a few seconds.

First we have the dogtag. I mean, Kit must have done it because he left his dogtag right? There are four critical problems with this evidence:
- The name on the dogtag read "Martin, Kit" so this dogtag is not military issue. The military only issues tags with the full name (not nicknames) which would have been printed instead "Martin, Christian." Fake souvenir tags can be purchased online (an even in kiosks in some locations) to read what you input on your order. I know a lot of military people and know exactly zero that wear their tags outside of work. But let's say for arguments sake that the souvenir tag really was Kit's. The murders were planned in "precise military fashion" according to the prosecution, yet Kit chooses to put on a souvenir tag with his name on it that morning? I find that very hard to believe.
- This souvenir tag was tested for fingerprints and DNA and they found none. The prosecution argued that while Kit was cleaning up the blood from the carpet in the foyer, the tag must have kept getting in his way so he took it off and set it up on a shelf. That seems really far-fetched.
- The tag was on a string and not a break-a-way chain which was also tested for DNA evidence and there was "some DNA evidence" but apparently not enough to make a comparison to Kit's. This seems really off to me. If someone had just committed three murders, I would imagine they would have sweat a bit leaving behind DNA. Yet interestingly there is no DNA evidence on the tag or string matching Kit.
- Besides the most ridiculous idea that a murderer would even put that tag on before going to commit these murders, he had the forethought to wipe it down real good when removing it when it was in his way (to remove any fingerprints and DNA). Instead of putting it in his pocket, he places it on a shelf and then he forgets to take it when he leaves? Wow, really?
- Kit was portrayed by the prosecution as a highly trained ranger who skillfully planned out these murders (or at least Calvin and Pam's as Ed was an unexpected variable). But then afterwards he walked across the street and placed the murder weapon in his safe instead of ditching it? That's not too bright.
- The 45 casing was found by family members when cleaning the porch area FIVE months AFTER the murders. This was despite the porch area being processed THREE separate times; once by Christian County Sheriffs Department, once when Detective Scott Smith went to spray the scene with Blue Star (Luminol), and lastly when Crime Scene Investigators came in to try to determine where on the property the shootings took place.
- The bullets found in Cal's body were not conclusively linked to Kit's Glock in his safe. But the 45 casing found by family members WAS positively identified as being fired from Kit's Glock.
- Kit testified that when he first moved to the area he hung out with Cal some and did target shooting in Cal's backyard. There is no doubt that Kit was a gun enthusiast, but that does not make a person a murderer. He had spent casings in his backyard, Cal's backyard and in his truck bed. So it would be easy for someone to collect one of Kit's spent casings and plant it on the porch through the latticework.

Another good shorter synopsis (though a HUGE mistake is minute 4:25 where he states the phone found in the driveway was determined to be Pam's. It was Ed's phone found in the driveway. Joan was actually the one that took Pam's phone into the ATT store about a month after the murders saying she found it and wanted to get it unlocked (that's a whole crazy part of evidence that also convinces me that Kit is innocent - #joanhadthephone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WbFF7SyeSg

Marilyn Manson’s former assistant, Ashley Walters, is gearing up for a legal showdown with the controversial singer as her lawsuit against him heads to trial. Initially dismissed in May 2022, Walters’ claims of abuse against Manson were reinstated in December following an appeal. Trying to decide between two similarly priced cargo bikes for use while I'm relocated over the summer. I have an argo cargo kit that's working well for me at home, but it's too big and unwieldy to transport with me ~700 miles.
Use case will be short (<5 mile round trip, probably closer to 2-3) trips to the store and beach (read: flat terrain). Need to be able to transport 1 toddler, maybe (unlikely) a second. I currently have a Thule/Yepp rear rack seat that I can bring with me. Will also scratch the itch of riding my bike while away from home, some exercise.
The Kona Ute is a 2011, doesn't come with many/any accessories. Frame is a bit ugly, fenders could use replacement, and it sounds like the rear disc brake may need adjustment (hopefully not actually broken, hopefully doesn't need new cables/housing). I can do minor repairs/tuning, but nothing major where I'll be. Pros for me are the bike is solid, it'll ride like a bike, parts are easy, gearing is generous, and potential resale value if I decide not to keep it post-summer. Cons are transporting will be difficult- will have to lift onto roof rack of van. May need more work than expected. It's listed at $300, may go lower.
The taga 2.0 is the acoustic version. Apparently in great mechanical shape. Pros are portability- it can come apart for easier transport, front loaders are generally more versatile. Potentially decent resale value. Cons are: brand/solidity of the bike. I've had a 1.0 in the past, and it rode fine, but it's now a "phoenix company", and supplies/parts could be an issue. A non-zero number of people have had near-catastrophic failure (front fork braking), while others have never had an issue. Limited gearing, but I'll be riding flat terrain so it won't be a big deal. Listed at $275

Alright, I imagine this post is kind of unique for this sub, so stay with me.
I am a high school government teacher, working to train an AI to work as a sort of "expert witness" during the Oral Arguments portion of a Supreme Court simulation. That's to say that I'm loading an AI with reliable sources on Supreme Court Cases, and instructing it to pull exclusively from that information, as my students inquire about details of the case. The AI will search these records, identify the information they need, and present it in layman's terms.
I've had a really easy time finding court opinions and loading those in, but I've found they're really lacking specifics, and tend to just generate responses that reiterate the decision of the court. I would like to find some like, massive, extremely thorough files, so when my students ask things like "what was the difference in funding between schools in San Antonio vs Rodriguez?", it will actually provide them with numbers and data.
I assumed this would be public information and crazy easy to crack open...but then I remembered that I don't have a law degree, and have like, a passable understanding of what I'm really looking for.
Is anyone aware of the resources I would want to plug into this AI and where I might find them?

Rudy Giuliani's legal problems could be about to get worse, a former U.S. attorney has said.
Giuliani was one of 18 people indicted last month in Arizona over an alleged scheme to overturn the 2020 election results in the state. He was served the indictment alongside six Trump allies, including Trump's former and his close adviser Boris Epshteyn, as well as 11 individuals who acted as fake GOP electors for Arizona in the last presidential election.
However, Giuliani is the only defendant prosecutors have been unable to serve with a summons, according to Richie Taylor, a spokesperson for the Arizona attorney general's office.
Taylor said prosecutors and investigators working for Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes have made multiple attempts to serve Giuliani a summons, which serves as a formal notice that he has been criminally charged and must appear before a judge at Maricopa County Superior Court on May 21. However, they have been unable to find him. He added that the day after the state-level grand jury handed up its indictment to Giuliani, two agents for the attorney general's office traveled to New York City with plans to hand-deliver the notice to him.
The agents determined that Giuliani was in his New York apartment because he had recently video streamed from his residence, Taylor continued, adding that upon their arrival, they were told by a person at the front desk that they were not allowed to accept service of the documents. Taylor said the person did not dispute Giuliani lived there. "We were not granted access," Taylor said.
The attorney general's office has also made multiple attempts to try to contact Giuliani by calling various phone numbers for him, "and none of them were successful," according to Taylor.

A person close to Giuliani told The Washington Post that the former New York City mayor and one-time attorney for Trump "keeps a busy schedule." Amid his apparent absence, Paul Charlton, a former U.S. attorney appointed by President George W. Bush, has argued that Giuliani's legal problems could potentially get worse if he does not appear for his initial court appearance, warning that it would lead to his arrest. "You can think of a summons to appear as a courtesy by the prosecutors—it is an invitation to appear," Charlton told The Washington Post. "You can be held in contempt if you are served and fail to appear. But the alternative for prosecutors is to issue an arrest warrant, and that is, of course, a much more compelling vehicle." He added that generally speaking, defendants who seek to avoid a summons should consider "the reality that the next step the prosecutors take won't be quite as gentle."
Giuliani has not responded to the case against him in Arizona, where Trump lost by 10,457 votes.
Trump was not among those charged in Arizona. He is described in the indictment only as "Unindicted Coconspirator 1."
"In Arizona, and the United States, the people elected Joseph Biden as President on November 3, 2020," the indictment reads. "Unwilling to accept this fact, Defendants and unindicted coconspirators schemed to prevent the lawful transfer of the presidency to keep Unindicted Coconspirator 1 in office against the will of Arizona's voters."
Giuliani is also involved in a Georgia election racketeering case brought by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, in which he was charged alongside Trump with allegedly conspiring to overturn Biden's victory in the state. Both have pleaded not guilty.
He is also facing a $148 million judgment for defaming a pair of election workers in Georgia, which has led to him declaring bankruptcy.
