2024.04.28 23:27 AuroraMystique Seeking Graduate Students' Opinions: Choosing between UofT and UBC for CS undergrad with the ultimate aim of getting into the AI/ML specialization of MIT's EECS PhD program

Greetings esteemed students and scholars,
I hope this post finds you well. I have come to you to seek your expertise and insights as I navigate a critical decision in my academic journey. I am an incoming freshman presently faced with the dilemma of choosing between the University of Toronto's St. George campus (UofT/UTSG) and the University of British Columbia's Vancouver Campus (UBC/UBCV) for my undergraduate studies in computer science with the ultimate hard-set goal of pursuing a PhD in AI/ML at MIT.
With the admission acceptance dealine for both of my offers approaching in three days, I am faced with an impending sense of urgency to choose swiftly and correctly. Over the past month, I have been exhaustively scouring the internet and speaking to students from both UofT and UBC in order to effecitvely gauge the advantages and drawbacks of each program in hopes of minimizing the oppurtunity cost of choosing one over the other. Throughout this, I have been exposed to a variety of valuable insights and viewpoints, and have accordingly once again returned to reddit to combat the storm of uncertainty and indecision that clouds my judgement with the ilumination of knowledge and guidance from the benevolent community that has guided me in the past.
Seeing as both research experience and academic performance are arguably the two most vital aspects toward the success of a grad application to MIT, my decision will be heavily influenced by factors such as academic rigour and research opportunities, among other interrelated factors that will impact my prospects of admission. I have gathered the folowing key considerations and welcome your expert opinions:
UofT Pros:
UofT Cons:
UBC Pros:
UBC Cons:
In addition, I am highly interested in hearing your thoughts on other aspects that I haven't yet considered but should factor in to my decision-making process. I would also like to sincerely appologize for any assumptions or generalizations I have inadventently made about UofT and UBC in my post. It was never my intention to deliberately spread misinformation and if you are dissatisifed with anything I have said about either university, please do not hesitate to inform me so that I may change any such inaccuracies at the earliest.
TL;DR: I am seeking a comprehensive analysis of the pros and cons of attending UofT vs UBC for undergraduate studies in computer science if my aim is to maxamize my chances of admission to MIT or Stanford's AI/ML PhD programs.
I sincerely thank you for your time and thoughtful considerations and am 100% open to any recommendations and courses of action to undertake (I am presently self studying undergraduate computer science through recommended textbooks and would love to supplement my learning by any means in order to maximize my prospects of landing a research opportunity as early as possible). I would also like to wholeheartedly appologize for this rushed and potentially difficult to read post as I wasn't in the best condition composing this. Nevertheless, I am deeply indebted to you for your expertise and insights which will be invaluable in guiding me towards making an informed decision that aligns for my long-term academic career goals.
Kind regards,
Fellow prospective incoming undergrad

2024.04.28 23:15 Class_Act2023 Maximizing Space in the 10 MyERAS Application Experiences

Beginning in 2023, residency applicants have been limited to 10 MyERAS application experiences. However, many candidates have more than 10 experiences they would like to include in the ERAS CV.
Here’s a breakdown of how to maximize your allotted space and present a comprehensive snapshot of your background–without leaving anything out.

Bundling Your 10 MyERAS Application Experiences

Each experience entry can include a single item OR a grouping of items presented together.

Guidelines for Bundling Entries

Like Items

If you have 3 community volunteer experiences, group them together like this:
Red Cross Community Day, 02/23
Parks and Rec Initiative, 01/22 – 08/22
Heart Health Boot Camp, 03/21 – 05/21
Why this works: Alone, these experiences are not impressive. Together, they show a sustained effort to be involved with and improve your community.
Older Items
If you have older experiences (before medical school), group them together like this:
Worked with children in a variety of settings (prior to medical school):
Hospital Volunteer, Pediatric Oncology Unit, Broadway Urban Hospital
02/19 – 02/20
Shadowing, Dr. Thomas Smith, Pediatrics
06/18 – 07/18
Childcare Provider, Little Antics Day Care
05/17 – 03/18
Why this works: This grouping lets programs know your interest in medicine, or a specific field, is long-standing and that you’ve explored medicine/the field in a variety of settings.
Non-Medical Experiences
If you worked to support yourself during high school, undergraduate studies, and/or medical school, group items together like this:
Worked 20-25 hours a week (beginning at age 16) while maintaining strong grades:
Receptionist, Marty’s Construction 05/18 – 05/20
Shelf Stocker, Publix Grocery Store 04/17 – 04/18
Cashier, The Little Store 08/15 – 04/17
Note: Bullet points aren’t needed for items that are self-explanatory.
Why this works: Working and going to school at the same time is challenging and conveys you have a strong work ethic, time management skills, and a strong desire to succeed.
There are other ways to bundle items in the experience section, too. For example, clinical experiences at the same location; experiences focused on the same topic; and research experiences without resulting publications.
Now that you know about bundling experiences to maximize the content in your MyERAS Application, here’s some guidance on how to approach this task!

Creating Your MyERAS Application Experience Entries

After reading below, learn more about the supplemental aspects of ERAS here.
1. Compile an exhaustive list of your experiences–all of them! Don’t leave anything out at this stage, even non-medical experiences from your undergraduate or pre-medical school years.
Your list should include experiences from these seven categories:
  1. Research
  2. Work (includes paid clinical, nonclinical, business, or entrepreneurial experiences)
  3. Education/training (includes clinical training such as clerkships, away rotations, subinternships, and structured observerships)
  4. Teaching/mentoring (includes paid teaching positions such as high school teacher, teaching assistant, or tutor)
  5. Volunteeservice/advocacy (includes unpaid experiences)
  6. Military service
  7. Professional organization (includes societies, associations, etc., at local, regional, national, or international levels)
2. Select your 3 most meaningful experiences, and put those at the top of the list.
These will appear as your 1st three CV entries, so they should be selected strategically based on the specialty you’re applying to and/or their uniqueness.
If you have USCE in the field you’re applying to, strongly consider making it one of your meaningful experiences.
It is completely fine to bundle items to create a meaningful experience (i.e., 2 recent USCE experiences, 2 specialty-relevant research experiences).
3. Select any remaining experiences that are robust in nature (will require a high character count to describe) and relevant to the field you’re applying to.
These experiences should be presented as individual entries.
4. Review your remaining experiences and look for entries that would work well if “packaged” together in 1 experience entry.
Group these items together and write an opening statement for the entry that conveys the overall message.
5. Evaluate any outstanding experiences and determine if they should be excluded or combined with another item.
6. Add any items you won’t be including in your CV to your PS working draft and consider discussing them there IF they are notable and will add value to your personal statement.

2024.04.28 22:10 popcodswallop [WTS] VINTAGE • Black Hard Rubber Pens from the Big Four and More (Flex-Wet Noodle): Conklin Crescent-Filler 20 Stickered Wahl 74 Mabie Todd Swan OS No. 6 Flat Top Retrofit Hartline Masonic Self-Blotting Pen Waterman 92 1/2 Sheaffer Clip Ring Top •

This week’s vintage batch features FPs in black chased hard rubber with unusually flexible nibs. Highlights include an early, stickered Wahl and a massively oversized Mabie Todd Swan #6. Nibs range from Flex to Wet Noodle. As always, all are fully restored and ready to write.

ALBUM & TIMESTAMP

Pastable link: https://imgur.com/a/EUnzUnV

Condition (n.b.): All pens listed below have been disassembled, cleaned and restored with new sacs installed in the last couple weeks. Each of these pens is guaranteed to fill and write as designed without leaks or other problems. Nibs have been adjusted when necessary to ensure that all lay down a smooth and consistent line.
THESE PENS HAVE NO CRACKS, CHIPS, PERSONALIZATIONS, LOOSE OR MISSING PARTS, BENT NIBS, MISALIGNED TINES, BROKEN/WORN OFF TIPPING, OR THREADING ISSUES.

Line Widths and Writing Samples: To provide buyers with as much information as possible, I have started to adopt the following line width standards: XXF (.1-.2mm); XF (approx .3mm); F (approx .4mm); M (approx .6mm); B (approx .8mm). Nib flexibility is determined by variation (max line width under pressure) and softness (amount of pressure). Flexibility designations based on variation generally run as follows for an XF/F nib: Semi-Flex (approx. 1mm); Flex (1.2-1.9mm); Superflex (>2mm). All line width measurements are taken with a digital caliper but should be considered approximations providing a general guide. Width may vary slightly depending on type of ink and paper used as well as amount of pressure applied. All writing samples are on Rhodia dot paper using Waterman Serenity Blue.

1. 1920-5 Conklin Crescent-Filler 20 (BCHR, GPT, Crescent filler, 14k XXF/XF Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 3/8” capped. Something about the 100+ y/o obsolescent design of Conklin’s Crescent-Filler appeals to me. It’s the pen once touted in adverts by none other than Mark Twain. "I prefer it to ten other fountain pens,” writes Twain, “because it carries its filler in its own stomach, and I can not mislay even by art or intention. Also, I prefer it because it is a profanity saver; it cannot roll off the desk." This one made of black hard rubber, chased in the scallop pattern. Patented rocker clip raises at the bottom when the top is depressed. Gold-filled crescent is stamped "Crescent " on one side and “Conklin” on the other. The Crescent-Filler is one of the most simple and durable filling systems among sacced pens. To fill one simply rotates the knurled lock-ring to the open position and depresses the crescent once with the nib submersed. Super-Flexible 14k Conklin Toledo #2 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XXF/XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.2mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Super thin hairlines, superbly responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Gold-plated trim is pristine with no brassing or other notable blemishes. Hard rubber is factory black with virtually no fading. Chasing is sharp and deep with little discernible wear. Hard rubber has a smooth and lustrous finish with no deep scratches or other noteworthy flaws. Manufacturer imprints on the barrel are slightly weakened but still fully legible. Price: $280

2. 1920s Wahl 74 w/ Sticker (BCHR, Grecian Border pattern, NPT, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This standard-sized model measures 5 3/16” capped. Before Wahl introduced its Gold Seal pens in the late 1920s, the company manufactured some stunning flat tops exemplified by this one. It's made of black hard rubber, chased in the geometric Art Deco design referred to by collectors as Greek Key or Grecian Border. Nickel-plated trim includes Wahl’s functional, patented roller-clip. Astonishingly, this pen has its original sticker affixed to the cap. It reads: “746 Fine / Grecian Bdr. / $4.25.” Super-Flexible 14k Wahl #4 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line (by the standards above) that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.2mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, highly responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another great choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Hard rubber is factory black with no discernible fading. Chasing is factory sharp and deep with no discernible wear. Surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other notable blemishes. Nickel-plated trim is pristine aside from slivers of drawer wear on the side edges of the clip and subtle stippling of wear on the lever under a loupe. Number stamp on barrel end is factory deep. Manufacturer imprint on cap is covered by the sticker band but I’d imagine it’s factory deep and fully legible as well. The only stickered Wahl of this vintage I’ve ever offered. Price: $380 SOLD

3. c.1918 Mabie Todd Oversized Swan No. 6 (BCHR, NPT, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This oversized pen has a thick girth and a considerable length that makes it too long for the tray! Longer than both a 46 Eternal and a Waterman 56, it measures 5 3/4” capped. This impressive pen is made of black chased hard rubber with nickel-plated trim. Early, oversized Mabie Todds were made in much smaller numbers and are orders of magnitude tougher to find than later Eternals of the same size. This is an example of one of Mabie Todd's earliest screw cap models when most FPs had been slip-caps. So early they found it necessary to stamp the cap at the top with the words "screw cap tightly" above an arrow pointing counter-clockwise to make it user-friendly (DETAIL PHOTO)! Another perk of these early pens were the expressive nibs, to be contrasted with the rigid nails so common on later pens such as Eternals. The commensurably oversized Mabie Todd #6 nib on this pen is a Super-Flexible writer with snap-back like a snapping turtle’s! It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.4mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, superbly responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another great choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. What first struck me about this pen was the factory crisp chasing – no weakening whatsoever – that evinces the appeal of these pens when new. Black hard rubber is dark black in color with just a hint of fading revealed when one uncaps the barrel and compares to the portion covered by the cap. Nickel-plated trim looks pristine to the naked eye but shows hairsbreadth slivers of drawer wear on the bottom right and top edges of the clip under a loupe. Hard rubber has a smooth and lustrous finish with no deep scratches or other noteworthy flaws. Manufacturer imprints on barrel and cap are factory deep and fully legible. Not a common pen in any condition, downright rare when they’re this clean. Price: $520 [ON HOLD]

4. 1920s Flat Top Custom Retrofit (BCHR, NPT, lever filler, XXF Wet Noodle nib). This full-sized pen measures 5 1/4” capped. This pen lacks any maker’s marks, but it’s of solid construction with an interesting barrel threads design. It’s made of black chased hard rubber with nickel-plated trim. This pen came to me nibless, so I’ve performed one of my custom dip-pen nib retrofits that’s a particularly good match, performing with the same smoothness and consistency under flex as a factory nib. Feed and nib have been tuned to dial in the flow. That 14k iridium-tipped nib, stamped A Norton & Son New York, is a Wet Noodle with painterly softness and flow. It lays down a smooth and consistent XXF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.0mm) under minimal pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Anything more than grazing the page suffices to widen the tines. Effortless variation, needlepoint hairlines, precisely responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. I did have to slow down a bit to optimize flow under full flex, so some experimentation with inks wetter than Waterman Serenity Blue (there are many) might be in order if you prefer to write faster. Condition: excellent [B]. Black hard rubber retains its factor black color with no fading. Chasing is factory sharp and deep aside from a portion running from the right side of the lever to the blank space on the barrel, where it’s mostly worn away. Nickel-plated trim is clean aside from some subtle wear on the spade and sides of the lever visible under a loupe. A delightful writer for those looking to dip their toes into vintage flex and want the softest nib they can find. Price: $250

5. 1920s W.A. Hartline Masonic Self-Blotting Pen (BCHR, GFT, lever filler, 14k F Superflex nib). This pen has a standard girth and measures 5” capped. In the 19th and early-20th centuries, it was common to use an ink blotter to absorb excess ink from the paper to prevent feathering and expedite the drying process. In the early days of FPs a handful of makers experimented with integrating these blotters into the pen itself. The idea never quite caught on, so these pens are quite uncommon today. This “Self Blotting” pen, made by the W.A. Hartline company of Tampa, FL is equipped with a removable, gold-filled cap crown with the embossed, square and compass emblem of the Freemasons integrated into the top. Underneath that crown is a roller ink-blotter built into the cap (DETAIL PHOTO). What a combination! The pen itself is made of black chased hard rubber and I believe all of the trim to be gold-filled. Super-Flexible 14k Warranted #2 nib lays down a smooth and consistent F line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.2mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Strong snap-back and reliably wet flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for calligraphic writing styles in a bold hand. Condition: excellent [B]. Hard rubber retains its dark black color with just a bit of even fading visible under some lights. Chasing shows even, moderate wear. Hard rubber has a smooth, lustrous surface with no deep scratches or other notable blemishes. Gold-filled trim is exceptionally clean with no brassing or other notable blemishes. Manufacturer imprint on barrel is factory deep and fully legible. A fascinating historical curiosity and a lovely writer to boot! Price: $240 [ON HOLD]

6. 1920s Waterman 92 1/2 (BCHR, GPT, lever filler, 14k XF Flex nib). This slender (1/2-sized) model is longer than a ring top but slightly shorter than a 52, measuring 4 3/4” capped and 6” posted. Not to be confused with the later, celluloid 92, this 92 1/2 is made of black chased hard rubber with gold-plated trim. It’s the first I’ve ever encountered. Cap came clipless from the factory (no holes drilled for a clip), but has been outfitted with a gold-plated accommodation clip. Based on its absence from US catalogues, I believe this model was made strictly for foreign export. The barrel has a Canadian imprint while the nib reads “Ideal / England,” it being a common practice for Waterman’s Canadian pens to be finished in England. That 14k nib is a Flexible writer (note change from writing sample after taking measurement. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 3B+ (approx 1.8mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for shaded writing. Condition: fine [C]. This pen has no functional flaws but does show some use. Hard rubber is an even dark chocolate color – still much darker than the brown these can turn. Chasing is significantly yet evenly weakened across the cap and barrel. Hard rubber surface is smooth with no deep scratches or other notable blemishes. Gold-plating on the lever has a sliver of brassing in the center and parts of the clip look tarnished, though I’m not sure this amounts to full-fledged brassing. Manufacturer imprint on barrel and number stamp on barrel end are weakened but fully legible. An affordable user and a lovely writer for those wondering at what all the fuss is about early Watermans. Price: $170

7. 1910s Sheaffer-Clip Ring Top (BCHR, GPT, lever filler, 14k XXF Wet Noodle nib). This short, vestpocket model measures 4 9/16” capped and 5 3/4” posted. It was Walter A. Sheaffer who first patented the lever-filling fountain pen in 1908. In 1912 he founded the Sheaffer pen company and his revolutionary design was met with resounding acclaim. In the 1910s, when the pocket clip and lever filler were recent innovations, Sheaffer pens were typically marked "Sheaffer-Clip" on the clips and "Self-Filling" on the nibs to distinguish them from the oldfangled clipless eyedroppers of other makers. Most of their model lineup in this period – before stiff, manifold nibs became the rage in the mid-20s – was comprised of simple black hard rubber pens with long-tined gold nibs. They are every bit as flexible as early Waterman's, which are more common today. But Sheaffers are typically more responsive (having stronger snap-back). This early flat top is made of black chased hard rubber with gold-plated ring top on the cap for attaching to a chatelaine or pocket chain. 14k Sheaffer Self-Filling nib is a Wet Noodle with softness and flow comparable to that of a dip pen nib. Condition: near mint [B+]. This pen saw so little use it looks like some thing plucked from a time capsule. Hard rubber is close to factory black with virtually no fading. Chasing is factor sharp and crisp. Surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other notable blemishes. Gold-plated trim is pristine with no brassing or other noteworthy flaws. Manufacturer imprint on barrel is factory deep and fully legible. Price: $210 SOLD

Essays/Supplementals/LOR:
Personal Statement
I would say my personal statement was pretty strong. I wrote about the stories I heard and encountered while taking care of the elderly and how I've begun making my own stories. I kept it as genuine as possible. My Yale AO said this made her tear up and I think it was a pretty sentimental piece. Initially, I was comparing my essay to those of people online and I was so worried because mine didn't look like theirs and I didn't start ec dropping and shit like them but honestly I had nothing to worry about. Rating maybe: 9 (or 9.5?) / 10
Supplementals
My supps were def rushed but I would say these were really good as well. I kept them genuine and did my best to convey as many aspects of my character as possible. Compassion and diversity was a big theme for me loll. Rating maybe: 8.5/10
LORs
I didn't see most of my LORs but I assume they were good. My calc teacher wrote how I was the best student he's had in years and my lang teacher talked about some classroom moments (forgot what exactly). Rating maybe: 7 - 9 (crazy range ik) / 10
Interviews
Tufts (9.5/10): Very chill and she calmed my nerves a LOT. It was like talking to another kid my age. Lasted like 40 minutes?
Harvard (8/10): Almost very chill, was at starbucks. I messed up and stuttered a few times but overall this was very good. Lasted like 70 mins
Yale (10/10): My interviewer and I were both Black and were able to connect really well because of that. We talked a lot about the Yale environment and being a person of color on campus. Lasted like 80 mins
Princeton (9/10): One of my shorter interviews but he was sooo chill. He was a busy guy so our interview only lasted 20 mins but I was able to express myself pretty confidently and tell him why I liked Princeton.
Duke (6/10): Ok my interviewer was lowk a bot bruh and the interview was p awkward. I didn't do enough research so when he asked me why Duke, I gave a vague answer and bro told me "Well other schools have that too, what makes Duke different."
URichmond Scholars (9.5/10): Even though it was in front of like 8 other people it was very chill. I was able to confidently talk about myself and what I'd like to do at Richmond

2024.04.28 20:00 HopelessinOH Fellow nurses, I need to get this off my chest after 4 long years.

In 2020 I was busted for drug diversion. I was disgraced (justly), and fired (also justly). I had very poor coping skills at the time and looked for an escape from my daily stressors whenevewherever I could. Certainly not an excuse, but that's what I was going through. I self reported to the nursing board and qualified for their treatment program. I tell people I never saw the inside of a jail/prison during that time, but I definitely served time regardless. I've come a long way. A couple weeks ago, I finally met all requirements set before me by the board and was able to request release from the program. That release request was recently approved, and I should be receiving my official letter stating the same within the next few days. During the first 3 years, while struggling with employment, I still lurked here among you. I never commented because I felt unworthy and felt like a true wolf in sheep's clothing. I got an RN job a year ago early April, which I love. I'm definitely thankful to close the book on this dark chapter in my life once and for all. It's really good to be back with all of you. Sidenote: If anyone reading this is currently in the same predicament and struggling as an RN in addiction or recovering from it, just remember that you're not alone. If you need to talk, DM me anytime. Willing to help any way I can. Thanks for reading!

2024.04.28 19:11 SieteSeven77_ Basic Config 2.

Access Methods
A switch will forward traffic by default and does not need to be explicitly configured to operate. For example, two configured hosts connected to the same new switch would be able to communicate.
Regardless of the default behavior of a new switch, all switches should be configured and secured.
Table caption
Method Description
Console This is a physical management port that provides out-of-band access to a Cisco device. Out-of-band access refers to access via a dedicated management channel that is used for device maintenance purposes only. The advantage of using a console port is that the device is accessible even if no networking services are configured, such as performing the initial configuration. A computer running terminal emulation software and a special console cable to connect to the device are required for a console connection.
Secure Shell (SSH) SSH is an in-band and recommended method for remotely establishing a secure CLI connection, through a virtual interface, over a network. Unlike a console connection, SSH connections require active networking services on the device, including an active interface configured with an address. Most versions of Cisco IOS include an SSH server and an SSH client that can be used to establish SSH sessions with other devices.
Telnet Telnet is an insecure, in-band method of remotely establishing a CLI session, through a virtual interface, over a network. Unlike SSH, Telnet does not provide a secure, encrypted connection and should only be used in a lab environment. User authentication, passwords, and commands are sent over the network in plaintext. The best practice is to use SSH instead of Telnet. Cisco IOS includes both a Telnet server and Telnet client. Note: Some devices, such as routers, may also support a legacy auxiliary port that was used to establish a CLI session remotely over a telephone connection using a modem. Similar to a console connection, the AUX port is out-of-band and does not require networking services to be configured or available.
2.1.5 Terminal Emulation Programs There are several terminal emulation programs you can use to connect to a networking device either by a serial connection over a console port, or by an SSH/Telnet connection. These programs allow you to enhance your productivity by adjusting window sizes, changing font sizes, and changing color schemes.
IOS Navigation
2.2.1 Primary Command Modes
In the previous topic, you learned that all network devices require an OS and that they can be configured using the CLI or a GUI. Using the CLI may provide the network administrator with more precise control and flexibility than using the GUI. This topic discusses using CLI to navigate the Cisco IOS.
As a security feature, the Cisco IOS software separates management access into the following two command modes:
User EXEC Mode - This mode has limited capabilities but is useful for basic operations. It allows only a limited number of basic monitoring commands but does not allow the execution of any commands that might change the configuration of the device. The user EXEC mode is identified by the CLI prompt that ends with the > symbol.
Privileged EXEC Mode - To execute configuration commands, a network administrator must access privileged EXEC mode. Higher configuration modes, like global configuration mode, can only be reached from privileged EXEC mode. The privileged EXEC mode can be identified by the prompt ending with the # symbol. The table summarizes the two modes and displays the default CLI prompts of a Cisco switch and router.
Table caption Command Mode Description Default Device Prompt User Exec Mode Mode allows access to only a limited number of basic monitoring commands. It is often referred to as “view-only" mode. Switch> Router> Privileged EXEC Mode Mode allows access to all commands and features. The user can use any monitoring commands and execute configuration and management commands. Switch# Router#
2.2.2 Configuration Mode and Subconfiguration Modes To configure the device, the user must enter global configuration mode, which is commonly called global config mode.
From global config mode, CLI configuration changes are made that affect the operation of the device as a whole. Global configuration mode is identified by a prompt that ends with (config)# after the device name, such as Switch(config)#.
Global configuration mode is accessed before other specific configuration modes. From global config mode, the user can enter different subconfiguration modes. Each of these modes allows the configuration of a particular part or function of the IOS device. Two common subconfiguration modes include:
Line Configuration Mode - Used to configure console, SSH, Telnet, or AUX access. Interface Configuration Mode - Used to configure a switch port or router network interface. When the CLI is used, the mode is identified by the command-line prompt that is unique to that mode. By default, every prompt begins with the device name. Following the name, the remainder of the prompt indicates the mode. For example, the default prompt for line configuration mode is Switch(config-line)# and the default prompt for interface configuration mode is Switch(config-if)#.
Navigate Between IOS Modes Various commands are used to move in and out of command prompts. To move from user EXEC mode to privileged EXEC mode, use the enable command. Use the disable privileged EXEC mode command to return to user EXEC mode.
Note: Privileged EXEC mode is sometimes called enable mode.
To move in and out of global configuration mode, use the configure terminal privileged EXEC mode command. To return to the privileged EXEC mode, enter the exit global config mode command.
There are many different subconfiguration modes. For example, to enter line subconfiguration mode, you use the line command followed by the management line type and number you wish to access. Use the exit command to exit a subconfiguration mode and return to global configuration mode.
Switch(config)# line console 0 Switch(config-line)# exit Switch(config)# To move from any subconfiguration mode of the global configuration mode to the mode one step above it in the hierarchy of modes, enter the exit command.
To move from any subconfiguration mode to the privileged EXEC mode, enter the end command or enter the key combination Ctrl+Z.
Switch(config-line)# end Switch# You can also move directly from one subconfiguration mode to another. Notice how after selecting an interface, the command prompt changes from (config-line)# to (config-if)#.
Switch(config-line)# interface FastEthernet 0/1 Switch(config-if)#
Basic IOS Command Structure This topic covers the basic structure of commands for the Cisco IOS. A network administrator must know the basic IOS command structure to be able to use the CLI for device configuration.
A Cisco IOS device supports many commands. Each IOS command has a specific format, or syntax, and can only be executed in the appropriate mode. The general syntax for a command, shown in the figure, is the command followed by any appropriate keywords and arguments.
Keyword - This is a specific parameter defined in the operating system (in the figure, ip protocols). Argument - This is not predefined; it is a value or variable defined by the user (in the figure, 192.168.10.5). After entering each complete command, including any keywords and arguments, press the Enter key to submit the command to the command interpreter.
Hot Keys and Shortcuts The IOS CLI provides hot keys and shortcuts that make configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting easier.
Commands and keywords can be shortened to the minimum number of characters that identify a unique selection. For example, the configure command can be shortened to conf because configure is the only command that begins with conf. An even shorter version, con, will not work because more than one command begins with con. Keywords can also be shortened.
The table lists keystrokes to enhance command line editing.
Device Names You have learned a great deal about the Cisco IOS, navigating the IOS, and the command structure. Now, you are ready to configure devices! The first configuration command on any device should be to give it a unique device name or hostname. By default, all devices are assigned a factory default name. For example, a Cisco IOS switch is "Switch."
The problem is if all switches in a network were left with their default names, it would be difficult to identify a specific device. For instance, how would you know that you are connected to the right device when accessing it remotely using SSH? The hostname provides confirmation that you are connected to the correct device.
The default name should be changed to something more descriptive. By choosing names wisely, it is easier to remember, document, and identify network devices. Here are some important naming guidelines for hosts:
Start with a letter Contain no spaces End with a letter or digit Use only letters, digits, and dashes Be less than 64 characters in length An organization must choose a naming convention that makes it easy and intuitive to identify a specific device. The hostnames used in the device IOS preserve capitalization and lowercase characters. For example, the figure shows that three switches, spanning three different floors, are interconnected together in a network. The naming convention that was used incorporated the location and the purpose of each device. Network documentation should explain how these names were chosen so additional devices can be named accordingly.
The diagram shows three interconnected switches spanning three floors. The top switch is named Sw-Floor-3, the middle switch is named Sw-Floor-2, and the bottom switch is name Sw-Floor-1. A user sitting at a host PC is connected to the Sw-Floor-1 switch. Text at bottom reads: when network devices are named, they are easy to identify for configuration purposes.
Password Guidelines The use of weak or easily guessed passwords continues to be the biggest security concern of organizations. Network devices, including home wireless routers, should always have passwords configured to limit administrative access.
Cisco IOS can be configured to use hierarchical mode passwords to allow different access privileges to a network device.
All networking devices should limit administrative access by securing privileged EXEC, user EXEC, and remote Telnet access with passwords. In addition, all passwords should be encrypted and legal notifications provided.
When choosing passwords, use strong passwords that are not easily guessed. There are some key points to consider when choosing passwords:
Use passwords that are more than eight characters in length. Use a combination of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, special characters, and/or numeric sequences. Avoid using the same password for all devices. Do not use common words because they are easily guessed. Use an internet search to find a password generator. Many will allow you to set the length, character set, and other parameters.
Introduction to Networks v7.02 Basic Switch and End Device Configuration … Basic Device Configuration
2.4.1 Device Names You have learned a great deal about the Cisco IOS, navigating the IOS, and the command structure. Now, you are ready to configure devices! The first configuration command on any device should be to give it a unique device name or hostname. By default, all devices are assigned a factory default name. A user sitting at a host PC is connected to the Sw-Floor-1 switch. Text at bottom reads: when network devices are named, they are easy to identify for configuration purposes.
Sw-Floor-3Sw-Floor-2Sw-Floor-1 When network devices are named, they are easy to identify for configuration purposes.
When the naming convention has been identified, the next step is to use the CLI to apply the names to the devices. As shown in the example, from the privileged EXEC mode, access the global configuration mode by entering the configure terminal command. Notice the change in the command prompt.
Switch# configure terminal Switch(config)# hostname Sw-Floor-1 Sw-Floor-1(config)# From global configuration mode, enter the command hostname followed by the name of the switch and press Enter. Notice the change in the command prompt name.
Note: To return the switch to the default prompt, use the no hostname global config command.
Always make sure the documentation is updated each time a device is added or modified. Identify devices in the documentation by their location, purpose, and address.
2.4.2 Password Guidelines The use of weak or easily guessed passwords continues to be the biggest security concern of organizations.
Note: Most of the labs in this course use simple passwords such as cisco or class. These passwords are considered weak and easily guessable and should be avoided in production environments. We only use these passwords for convenience in a classroom setting, or to illustrate configuration examples.
2.4.3 Configure Passwords When you initially connect to a device, you are in user EXEC mode. This mode is secured using the console.
To secure user EXEC mode access, enter line console configuration mode using the line console 0 global configuration command, as shown in the example. The zero is used to represent the first (and in most cases the only) console interface. Next, specify the user EXEC mode password using the password password command. Finally, enable user EXEC access using the login command.
Sw-Floor-1# configure terminal Sw-Floor-1(config)# line console 0 Sw-Floor-1(config-line)# password cisco Sw-Floor-1(config-line)# login Sw-Floor-1(config-line)# end Sw-Floor-1# Console access will now require a password before allowing access to the user EXEC mode.
To have administrator access to all IOS commands including configuring a device, you must gain privileged EXEC mode access. It is the most important access method because it provides complete access to the device.
To secure privileged EXEC access, use the enable secret password global config command, as shown in the example.
Sw-Floor-1# configure terminal Sw-Floor-1(config)# enable secret class Sw-Floor-1(config)# exit Sw-Floor-1# Virtual terminal (VTY) lines enable remote access using Telnet or SSH to the device. Many Cisco switches support up to 16 VTY lines that are numbered 0 to 15.
To secure VTY lines, enter line VTY mode using the line vty 0 15 global config command. Next, specify the VTY password using the password password command. Lastly, enable VTY access using the login command.
An example of securing the VTY lines on a switch is shown.
Sw-Floor-1# configure terminal Sw-Floor-1(config)# line vty 0 15 Sw-Floor-1(config-line)# password cisco Sw-Floor-1(config-line)# login Sw-Floor-1(config-line)# end Sw-Floor-1#
2.4.4 Encrypt Passwords The startup-config and running-config files display most passwords in plaintext. This is a security threat because anyone can discover the passwords if they have access to these files.
To encrypt all plaintext passwords, use the service password-encryption global config command as shown in the example.
Sw-Floor-1# configure terminal Sw-Floor-1(config)# service password-encryption Sw-Floor-1(config)# The command applies weak encryption to all unencrypted passwords. This encryption applies only to passwords in the configuration file, not to passwords as they are sent over the network. The purpose of this command is to keep unauthorized individuals from viewing passwords in the configuration file.
Use the show running-config command to verify that passwords are now encrypted.
Sw-Floor-1(config)# end Sw-Floor-1# show running-config ! (Output omitted) ! line con 0 password 7 094F471A1A0A login ! line vty 0 4 password 7 094F471A1A0A login line vty 5 15 password 7 094F471A1A0A login ! ! end
Save Configurations
2.5.1 Configuration Files You now know how to perform basic configuration on a switch, including passwords and banner messages. This topic will show you how to save your configurations.
There are two system files that store the device configuration:
startup-config - This is the saved configuration file that is stored in NVRAM. It contains all the commands that will be used by the device upon startup or reboot. Flash does not lose its contents when the device is powered off. running-config - This is stored in Random Access Memory (RAM). It reflects the current configuration. Modifying a running configuration affects the operation of a Cisco device immediately. RAM is volatile memory. It loses all of its content when the device is powered off or restarted. The show running-config privileged EXEC mode command is used to view the running config. As shown in the example, the command will list the complete configuration currently stored in RAM.
Sw-Floor-1# show running-config Building configuration... Current configuration : 1351 bytes ! ! Last configuration change at 00:01:20 UTC Mon Mar 1 1993 ! version 15.0 no service pad service timestamps debug datetime msec service timestamps log datetime msec service password-encryption ! hostname Sw-Floor-1 ! (output omitted) To view the startup configuration file, use the show startup-config privileged EXEC command.
If power to the device is lost, or if the device is restarted, all configuration changes will be lost unless they have been saved. To save changes made to the running configuration to the startup configuration file, use the copy running-config startup-config privileged EXEC mode command.
2.5.2 Alter the Running Configuration If changes made to the running config do not have the desired effect and the running-config has not yet been saved, you can restore the device to its previous configuration. Remove the changed commands individually, or reload the device using the reload privileged EXEC mode command to restore the startup-config.
The downside to using the reload command to remove an unsaved running config is the brief amount of time the device will be offline, causing network downtime.
When a reload is initiated, the IOS will detect that the running config has changes that were not saved to the startup configuration. A prompt will appear to ask whether to save the changes. To discard the changes, enter n or no.
Alternatively, if undesired changes were saved to the startup config, it may be necessary to clear all the configurations. This requires erasing the startup config and restarting the device. The startup config is removed by using the erase startup-config privileged EXEC mode command. After the command is issued, the switch will prompt you for confirmation. Press Enter to accept.
After removing the startup config from NVRAM, reload the device to remove the current running config file from RAM. On reload, a switch will load the default startup config that originally shipped with the device.

2024.04.28 19:00 Sufficient-Face-7509 References and Letters of Recommendation

Hello everyone,
I am (hopefully) leaving my current school at the end of this year, and moving on to a new district. This year will mark the end of my 6th year of teaching, and I have spent my entire career working in the same school.
For context, I work in public school in the US.
I work in special education, in a mostly self-contained classroom for students who need the highest levels of support offered in my district. There is one other classroom in this program (I will call it Life Skills- that is not the name, but my district has a unique and distinct name for the program).
Although the Life Skills program is a special education class, due to our students complex health, social/emotional, and behavioral needs, we tend to be our own little sub-department, if you will. Because of this, the people who I work closely with and who know my work are the other teacher, my para educators/instructional aides depending on your location, and specialists (speech therapists, OT/PT), and administration. I do collaborate with the PE department to make sure we have accessible activities set up for the students, but they haven’t actually seen me teach.
I’ve gotten letters of recommendation from the other Life Skills teacher, one of my paras, an SLP who just retired last year but who I worked with for my entire career, and a 1:1 nurse who supported an incredibly medically fragile student in my classroom for the last 3 years. I will also be getting one from my evaluating administrator at some point this week.
So, my question is, can you list the same people who wrote you letters of recommendation as references? I don’t mean on my resume, where I put references available upon request most of our school districts have systems where you create a profile, fill everything out, upload docs, etc., and many have a references section. If not, I do have a few people I could ask- I have positive professional relationships with my colleagues- but they don’t necessarily know exactly what I do and how well I do it.
So, to sum up an essay that could have been a 2-3 line question: is it ok (or perhaps normal/typical) to list the people who’ve written you letters of recommendation as references as well?

2024.04.28 16:14 Easy-Perception-4402 29 [M4F] #Germany - Ever felt like you don't fit in?

Do you spend a lot of your time day dreaming what life would be like with your perfect match? Would that life consist of lots of quality time spent together, shared hobbies, travelling together, supporting each other and sharing not just the good times? Are your passions a weird conglomerate of sciency and artsy topics? We might just be a match. No, this is not an infomercial.
What makes finding my match somewhat difficult i,0s that my personality is all over the place, I can't really be put into a box and I dream of finding someone I'm deeply compatible with. I have a PhD in physics/math and work in a related field, involving IT and programming. My take on life is rather critical, rational and I'm not religious. BUT I'm also very by morals, emotional in certain aspects and my biggest aspiration in life is having a happy, fulfilling relationship where we are inseparable, each others best friend and more. A soulmate sorta thing if you wish, even though souls obviously don't exist...right?
Soo what are my passions that we could hopefully share together? I have to get the cliché out of the way first, I'm really big on films/tv shows/video games/manga and some books. It's not just something I consume to overcome boredom though, I'm extremely interested in stories and the art of story telling. My tastes are varied and something that would be fun to discuss, some of the things I like:
The point being, talking about stories, analysing movies together or writing our own video game plot (don't worry I already have an amazing idea, but not so good at writing dialogue)/short stories is a big thing I'd like to share in a relationship.
Still with me? Some other things I enjoy:
Phew ok, not done yet. I need to say something about the type of romantic connection I'm desiring as it's somewhat off the norm. I want to spend a lot of time with my partner. A lot. That doesn't even mean constantly engaging with each other, but just being around each other, checking in on each other, leaving little notes, generally what they would call being clingy. Maintaining a happy relationship should be the number 1 priority in your life, as it would be for me. I would never neglect you in favour of other people or obligations and expect the same in return. Location wise would be great if you're in Germany of course, but really doesn't matter that much to me. This would just be an awesome motivation for me to travel somewhere and as I'm very flexible in my day to day life, I would make a visit happen sooner than later.
Appearance wise, 183 cm, caucasian, slimish/fitish/averageish build, short dark brown hair and eyes. Finally, I'll finish off with an arbitrary list of traits that describe me and I'm simultaneously seeking out in a woman: sense of humour (did that come across...like, at all? Writing this post I felt like it was all rather serious at times, because I take this seriously, but my style of communication is more light hearted, being silly together, not taking everything too seriously, but being able to talk maturely should the situation require), responsible, curious, reliable, trustworthy, loyal, honest to a fault, dedicated, creative, self-aware, honest again because it's important, thoughtful, caring, kind but not a pushover, enjoys arguing/debating, romantic, sweet. If you have a (very?) k1nky side that would be the cherry on top, but it's not a must and all in due time.
Have a virtual cookie for making it this far. Now don't be shy and send me a PM already, telling me what's on your mind. If you send a chat and I don't reply, send a little PM as a follow up in case the chat didn't work.

2024.04.28 15:43 trowa116 Please Help Save our Tennis Courts from Shadow Money

Please 🙏 read and sign the petition.
The Jackie Robinson Tennis community in Bed-Stuy has grown tremendously, partly due to the community's passion, love, and commitment to the game. In addition, it has grown because of HQ Tennis’s Head Coach and Director, Frances Ferdinand’s ability to inspire, educate, and foster relationships with tennis lovers from all over the community and beyond.
For the past 5 years, HQ Tennis has brought high-quality tennis to the community through free tennis programming for young and old, summer camps for the youth, job opportunities, and special community events that especially target the underserved, predominantly Black and brown residents of the local housing projects merely across the street from the courts. If it weren’t for the efforts of the HQ Tennis team, along with the support of the Friends of Jackie Robinson Park Playground, the tennis courts would not have been renovated to USTA standards, allowing local youth, for example, to engage in officially sanctioned tournament play.
Coach Frances Ferdinand and HQ Tennis recently lost their bid for a renewal of the 5-year concession on Jackie Robinson Park Playground. This was a loss because of an unclear and unfair process that allowed a bidder from outside the neighborhood with deep pockets to take over the tennis courts. Despite what is stated in the application about the selection process weighing in on several factors, including community engagement, it was recently revealed that the decision was made solely based on the monetary size of the bid.
Our neighborhood parks and playgrounds are not for sale. We demand that concessions in our parks prioritize residents and include programming that is financially and culturally accessible. HQ Tennis has done a phenomenal job building, uplifting, and upgrading the quality of life in the area, and I want to express my support for HQ appealing the current decision. I want to see HQ Tennis have a fair opportunity to continue the concessions.
Please reconsider the concession winner today and now. We need a new vote that includes that community voice for HQ Tennis and Coach Frances this 2024 season and beyond.

2024.04.28 09:09 Lotuswellnessrehab The Psychology Of Addiction ,Greed & Selfishness Lotus Wellness Rehab Blog Lotus - India’s Finest Luxury Rehab

Addiction = Selfishness = Greed
WHEN IS IT OKAY TO BE SELFISH ?
Research shows that as addicts, we are inherently selfish. Because of this, we live under a simple but dangerous equation:
ADDICTION = SELFISHNESS & SELFISHNESS = GREED
Greed leads to a quest for self-gain over those responsibilities you have to your soul, your support systems, and your community. It is you acting impulsively without purpose or thought. It is flawed action generated from a damaged soul. While this greed may create a sense of euphoria for a moment, it will ultimately lead to shame, regret, depression, and possibly losing .
IN RECOVERY THERE IS A PLACE FOR SELFISHNESS
The objective of your recovery is to stay free of drugs and alcohol which requires a bit of selfishness. However, to remain sober, it is paramount that your addiction generated selfishness is transformed into selflessness. When you find satisfaction through selfless engagement rather than addictive pleasures, you are on your way to finding sustainable sobriety.
The reason such a transformation works is selfless engagement allows you to enter society without expectations. You are stepping into your community no longer thinking solely about yourself, but rather how you can contribute to the greater good. Imagine entering the workplace with purpose and intention, interacting with family based on appreciation and joy, and entering the public domain with curiosity and humility. A selfless approach to your relationships, responsibilities, and hobbies makes life much simpler to navigate.
The fact is, if you approach life in any other manner, you are being greedy. And greediness will ultimately limit outcomes. The limiting of outcomes causes cravings, anger, resentment, frustration, and many other negative emotions. When these emotions enter your soul, you become a taker rather than a contributor and the result of this selfish action tends to harm far more people than yourself.
SELFLESSNESS = GREATNESS & GREATNESS = INSPIRATION
On the other hand, selflessness opens possibilities. Selflessness = Greatness and Greatness = Inspiration. Selflessness is the act of doing the right thing, making decisions based on your core principles, and living a purpose driven life. It is easy to find individuals operating under these rules. When you are witnessing kindness, forgiveness, authenticity, and accountability, you are witnessing selflessness. When you see an individual performing above all others with integrity and determination, you are witnessing a selfless approach. For Example:
The examples above show individuals that contribute to our society. Their purposeful action inspires others to do the same and this is the true value selfless behavior. When you act selflessly, you are creating an inspiring energy that leads to greater contribution.
To be this contributor takes no special talent, experience, or skill set. It merely takes a willingness to look beyond yourself in all that you do. It requires you to take the tools, resources, and attributes that you have been blessed with and use them to learn, grow, and participate in life. It's not about knowing it all, always being right, or having every solution. It is only about living life with a thirsty curiosity about how best to contribute. It is about doing the next best thing, time and time again.
FIND YOUR WAY TO A GREATER GOOD ?
Staying sober is your priority. When using substances , you are immediately returned to that greedy state of addiction. This state is helpful to no one. Thus, there are times to be selfish in your recovery, but healthy selfishness is what you want. Healthy selfishness requires a proactive approach to life that eliminates those reactionary defects of character that appear without warning. When anger, frustration, resentment, rationalization, and blame are your answer to a situation, or more concerning, allowed to fester in your being for a lengthy period, you are still saddled with the illness of greed.
These adverse reactions are nothing more than your brain wanting to satisfy its addictive nature. Without drugs or alcohol to provide solace to those uncomfortable feelings, your mind looks to pacify its needs through other destructive responses. These responses look like anger, blame, resentment, or even hopelessness or sadness. These reactions give you a sense of power and serve to temporarily calm your damaged soul. Unfortunately, like when using, regret or shame follows such reactions and take a bad situation and makes it worse. Only when you take positive action will this destruction end right there; otherwise, it will compound into something unmanageable.
To beat this cycle of dysfunction, you must live selflessly. This process starts with positive choices in preparation for those triggering life events that are guaranteed to occur. It is a whole-body approach that involves the physical as well as the mental side of your being. It is an honesty to accept who you are and a commitment to be the person you wish to be. It is a desire to be selfless in how you contribute to those who are a part of your life.
Everyone is unique in what tools they need to create a healthy selfishness. However, there are some standard attributes a selfless contributor embodies as well as those qualities unique to you. Be selfish as you take the time to identify and incorporate those attributes that will make you a selfless contributor.
Below are several standard attributes recovering addicts must incorporate before they can find their selflessness nature.
The result of taking time to strengthen your soul, through means like those listed above, helps to create the healthy selfishness you are looking to embody. It is a greedless approach that delivers the rewards of life. When you add these tools to your daily life, you are transforming your selfishness (addict) into selflessness (contributor). You are preparing yourself to live life as it is meant to be lived.
Your greed is nothing more than you trying to win at life, which is not the formula for a life that you love. For some reason, there is a societal belief that the more you can acquire, the happier you will be. The reality is, you have already won at life; you are alive. Plus, the greatness of life is not received through this type of winning.
The accumulation of things is simply the accumulation of things. It is not happiness, peace, or satisfaction. Being better than someone else is not succeeding in life. Getting back at or dominating another is not winning in life. Checking out of life by feeding yourself drugs and alcohol is not winning at life. This line of thinking is selling life short. Your goal is to quiet your addictive mind. All the money, dominance, knowledge, talent, or drugs cannot quiet your addictive mind. Only selfless intention generated from a purposeful life will create such an outcome. The outcome of living a life you love.

2024.04.28 09:06 Lotuswellnessrehab How You Can Improve Your Mental Health With Positive Thinking Lotus Wellness Rehab Blog Lotus - India’s Finest Holistic Rehab

A more positive outlook on life is beneficial to your mental health. You can reduce your risk of depression, manage stress, and be happier by focusing on the positive.
Use affirmations, practice gratitude, meditate, and learn to recognize, stop, and change your negative thoughts. Daily practice will make this a life-changing habit.
WHAT IS POSITIVE THINKING?
Positive thinking is pretty much what it sounds like: approaching life with a positive outlook. This doesn’t mean ignoring the negative—it’s about your attitude. You can choose whether to react to everyday situations in a productive and positive way.
OPTIMISTIC ATTITUDE
When your thoughts and attitude are optimistic, you have a healthy outlook on yourself, your life, and life events. You take credit for the good things in your life and recognize that outside forces control negative outcomes.
As an optimistic, positive thinker, you also realize that bad things are temporary.
PESSIMISTIC ATTITUDE
The opposite is a pessimistic-negative- attitude. Negative thinking means seeing the worst in a situation or expecting the worst to happen. With a negative outlook, you don’t recognize bad situations as temporary.
Many people direct their negative thoughts inward and blame themselves when bad things happen. You blame yourself even when things are outside your control and see them as a persistent, inevitable part of life.
WHAT DOES THINKING POSITIVELY LOOK LIKE ?
Positive thinking can take many forms:
Identifying and stopping negative thoughts, then approaching them with a more positive outlook
Focusing on gratitude and the good things in life
Positive affirmations—short, optimistic statements used daily to challenge negative thoughts
Spending more time with positive people
Embracing humor and laughing more
Practicing positive self-talk
HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM TOXIC POSITIVITY ?
Positive thinking is generally more helpful and healthful than negative thinking. However, there can be a wrong way to go about it.
Toxic positivity came to the forefront of popular culture during the pandemic. As mental health issues rose, some people combatted their fear and anxiety by overdoing positivity.
Positive thinking becomes toxic when you feel forced to adopt a positive attitude that isn’t natural or helpful. This tends to minimize your feelings. It’s often valid and healthy to feel sad. You don’t have to stay positive all of the time.
A study found that people who tend to completely avoid difficult emotions, like sadness or anger, often feel worse in the end.
Sometimes, other people force toxic positivity onto you. It can be upsetting if you’re going through a difficult time and someone tells you to be positive or to look on the bright side.
In this case, try politely explaining why their advice isn’t sensitive to your situation and what they can do to help you feel better.
HOW A POSITIVE OUTLOOK AND AFFIRMATIONS SUPPORT MENTAL HEALTH
It’s important to balance positive thinking and minimize difficult thoughts and situations. Reasonable doses of positive thinking can help you shift your attitude and improve your mental health.
A study of nurses with significant job stress found that wellness apps helped boost positive thinking. They reported a significantly improved work-life quality and less stress and were better able to cope with difficult situations on the job.
These are more of the many benefits of a positive mental attitude on emotional well-being:
REDUCE STRESS
The biggest benefit of positivity for your mental health is stress management. People who have a positive outlook and attitude face stress more effectively. They don’t necessarily have less stressful lives, but they cope with stress better.
Instead of dwelling on a stressful situation, a positive thinker makes a plan, takes action, or asks others for help. Someone who is more negative ruminates and feels defeated. They believe the situation is out of their control and don’t take steps to make it better.
IMPROVE RESILIENCE
The ability to face stress by taking action is an example of resilience. More positive people tend also to be more resilient. This means they cope better with all kinds of challenges. They overcome adversity and bounce back better.
LESS DEPRESSION
It is no surprise that positive thinkers tend to be less depressed. Negative thinking leads to rumination, a major characteristic of depression in which you get lost in a spiral of bad thoughts.
A positive attitude isn’t a cure for depression but can reduce symptoms and help lift you out of the spiral. The belief that you have the power to change your situation is a powerful antidote to depression.
INCREASE CREATIVITY
A positive attitude supports creative thinking, which is good for mental health. Negative thinking is a defeatist attitude. It represents giving up. Positive thinking is all about coming up with solutions. By focusing on positive thoughts, you can become a more creative and better problem solver.
POSITIVE THINKING IS GOOD FOR PHYSICAL HEALTH TOO
You can’t separate mental from physical health. They impact each other, so it follows that positivity improves your physical health as well:
HOW TO STAY POSITIVE AND REDUCE NEGATIVE THINKING
Most people can benefit from increasing their positive thoughts. It seems part of human nature to be too hard on ourselves. A concerted effort to think more positively can improve your mental and physical well-being in many ways. Here are some tips to help you make a change.
Recognize and Stop Negative Self Talk Boosting positivity is about much more than simply adding positive thoughts. You also have to stop the negative ones.
The first step is to pay more attention to how you think. Many people let thoughts race through their heads without much awareness.
Practice noticing a negative thought as it passes through your mind. This can be difficult at first. Try paying attention to all your thoughts for five minutes and notice all the negative ones.
When you do notice a negative thought, stop it and reframe it. For instance, if you think, “I was so stupid to make that mistake at work today,” change it to, “I will learn from that mistake I made today.”
Continue to check in with yourself throughout the day. When you catch yourself in an unnecessarily negative thought, recognize it and then reframe it. You don’t have to be relentlessly positive or deny all bad thoughts, but try to shift your perspective or frame of reference.
KEEP A GRATITUDE JOURNAL
Once you begin training your brain to limit negative thoughts or to shift your perspective on them, build more positive thinking with other tools.
One way to build a more positive mindset is with gratitude. Gratitude doesn’t mean ignoring bad things that happen to you or what’s wrong in your life. It means putting more focus on what’s good.
When you focus on good things in your life, you’ll naturally begin to think more positively.
An easy way to practice gratitude is to keep a daily journal. Before you go to bed each night, write down a few things you are grateful for from the day.
Studies back up the efficacy of actively practicing gratitude. It makes you happier and improves overall health and well-being.
FOCUS ON YOUR STRENGTHS
A big part of positive thinking is recognizing your control over your life and situation. Things don’t just happen to you. You have the power to make positive changes.
To boost this kind of positive thinking, make an effort to focus on your personal strengths. Maybe you are a good friend or partner. You’re good at your job or a sport. It doesn’t have to be a skill or anything bit. Maybe your greatest strength is that you are kind to people.
Take time to list your strengths, especially when you feel yourself getting into a downward spiral of negative thoughts.
SMILE AND LAUGH MORE
This might sound obvious, but the more you laugh and smile, the happier you will be. Boosting happiness automatically boosts your positive thinking.
Spend more time with friends who make you laugh. Watch funny movies instead of dramas. Watch clips online of your favorite comedians.
Even faking a smile can instantly boost your mood, according to research. Studies show that smiling during a difficult or stressful situation reduces heart rate and blood pressure. It helps people cope better with that situation. So, even when you feel negative about life, smile and see how it affects your mood.
CHANGE YOUR SOCIAL GROUP
Take a critical look at the people you spend most of your time with. Are they unnecessarily pessimistic? Do they face adversity well and laugh a lot?
If you spend time with more negative people, it will impact your thinking. Choose who you spend your time with because it affects your mindset, mood, and overall health.
VISUALISE A BETTER FUTURE
The power of your imagination can make you a more positive thinker. When you’re in a bad situation or unhappy with your life, picture yourself in a better place.
Visualization is a great tool for manifesting what you want. By picturing it, you can make it happen. The first step is changing your negative outlook on the situation. Think about what’s possible, and then make a plan to get to that better place.
STAY HEALTHY
When you feel good, your thoughts will be more positive. A healthy lifestyle makes it easier to think positively. Get enough sleep, eat well, and exercise regularly. Spend time outside and hang out with friends. See your doctor regularly and stay on top of your health.
USING MEDITATION TO BOOST POSITIVE THINKING
Meditation is a practice that improves awareness and focused attention. It is not a single thing but multiple practices with similar goals. It creates a deep state of mind and body relaxation and, like positive thinking, boosts mental health.
Meditation is an ancient practice rooted in spirituality. Today it is a diverse practice that encompasses many cultures and styles. You can meditate with a blank mind, focus on your breathing, or repeat a positive mantra.
HOW MEDITATION BOOSTS POSITIVITY
Regular meditation practice benefits mental and physical health in many ways. One thing it can do is give you greater control over your thoughts. Meditation helps you build greater awareness about your interior monologue and your ongoing conversation with yourself.
Awareness is the first step to changing unhelpful, negative thoughts. Consider meditation a type of brain training. The more you practice it, the more aware you become of your thoughts and the easier it is to jump outside and see them from a new perspective. Once you can do that, you can begin to change them too.
A study of meditation and positive thinking compared non-meditators to a group of people using Meditation.
The researchers found that the meditators considered themselves much happier than the non-meditators. The study determined that meditation helped people improve positive thinking, leading to greater self-satisfaction and happiness.
TRY POSITIVE MEDITATIONS ON BETTER SLEEP
You can create or alter any meditation to focus on positive thoughts, or you can find guided meditations that emphasize positivity.
DROPPING INTO THE PRESENT MOMENT
This mindfulness meditation is all about focusing your awareness on the present moment, which is a great antidote to negative thoughts. Negativity tends to arise when you dwell on the past or worry about the future. Use this meditation to turn your thoughts away from negativity and focus on what you can feel and sense right now.
GRATITUDE BOOSTER
Use a short, six-minute gratitude meditation for a quick infusion of positive thoughts.
GRATITUDE FOR STRESSFUL TIMES
Gratitude is a great counterbalance to negative thinking. When the stress and bad things in your life threaten to overwhelm you, focus on what you are grateful for.
POSITIVE VIBRATIONS
This meditation will help you manifest more happiness and positivity in your daily life.
5 NIGHTS OF GRATITUDE
For more extended practice, use this series of five meditations all focused on finding gratitude in your life.
POSITIVE DREAMING
Your dreams are an extension of your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Use this short meditation to help condition your mind to have more positive dreams.
FINAL THOUGHTS
In addition to meditations, you can find other tools at lotus that help you boost your positivity while improving sleep. Try bedtime stories to take your mind out of a negative cycle of rumination. These easy, soothing stories are light, positive, and just what you need when feeling down.
Practice positive thinking by using daily affirmations, catching negative thoughts and self-talk, and turning them around. Then use meditations to support your mental health and cement those affirmations. You’ll start feeling better about yourself and your life before you know.

2024.04.28 08:40 Alteredchaos 📢 Sunday News - a busy week... the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities report on the violations of disabled is in, and a MP defects to Labour!

UK has made no significant progress in addressing its ‘grave and systematic violations’ of disabled people, UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) has found
Responding to publication of new report, coalition of Deaf and Disabled Peoples' Organisations says it is a 'much-needed counter to government rhetoric claiming they are protecting the most vulnerable'.
In a report published in 2017, the UNCPRD found that cuts to benefits and care funding had led to ‘systematic violations' of the rights of persons with disabilities, and it made a series of recommendations including that the UK government carry out a meaningful, rights-based, cumulative impact assessment of welfare reform measures adopted since 2010, while also ensuring that sufficient budget allocations are made available to cover extra costs associated with living with a disability.
However, in its new follow up report - based on meetings with a wide range of government officials as well as briefings with Deaf and Disabled Peoples' Organisations (DDPOs) - the Committee has concluded that 'no significant progress' has been made and that the UK Government has -
'... failed to take all appropriate measures to address grave and systematic violations of the human rights of persons with disabilities and has failed to eliminate the root causes of inequality and discrimination... This failure exists particularly with respect to the State party’s obligation to guarantee the right of persons with disabilities to live independently and be included in the community, to work and employment, and to an adequate standard of living and social protection...'
Specifically, the Committee makes findings in relation to -
'... [the] process is complex and onerous, the application itself has increased in size, which means that many applicants opt out of completing the application. Applicants are not always allowed assistance or support in assessment meetings, and assessors are inexperienced and/or unqualified in working with and understanding the lived experience of disabled people, in particular to people with intellectual and/or psychosocial disabilities.'
'There is a tangible concern that artificial intelligence tools and algorithms may harbour inherent biases, potentially leading to punitive measures that, fundamentally, could impart a sense of criminalization and psychological distress among individuals.'
'The evidence received revealed a disturbingly consistent theme: disabled people resorting to suicide following the denial of an adequate standard of living and social protection, starkly contradicting the foundational principles enshrined in the Convention.'
'The Committee is deeply concerned by reports that disabled refugees, asylum seekers and those in refugee-like situations do not receive adequate benefits and support to live in the community, and are experiencing challenges in obtaining personal assistants, assistive devices, accessible housing and essential disability supports.'
Accordingly, the Committee makes a series of recommendations including that the UK government should urgently -
UK DDPO Coalition Co-ordinator Ellen Clifford said today -
'The government’s attitude towards the UN special inquiry is evidence that their treatment of Deaf and Disabled people is wilful and calculated. This is reflected in the damning findings of the report. The limitations of the inquiry process are that there are just too many deliberate rights violations to include in one report. However, the report validates the experiences of Deaf and Disabled people across the UK and is a much-needed counter to government rhetoric claiming they are 'protecting the most vulnerable' when they are doing the exact opposite.'

Dan Poulter: Conservative MP and ex-health minister defects to Labour
In an exclusive TV interview today, the MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich told the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg that he could no longer look his NHS colleagues and patients in the eye and stay on as a Conservative.
The consultant psychiatrist, who served as a health minister under the coalition from 2012 to 2015, told the BBC:
"I found it increasingly difficult to look my NHS colleagues in the eye, my patients in the eye, and my constituents in the eye with good conscience."
He suggested the party had stopped valuing public services, saying:
"The difficulty for the Conservative Party is that the party I was elected into valued public services... it had a compassionate view about supporting the more disadvantaged in society... I think the Conservative Party today is in a very different place."

Government confirms that it will legislate to remove benefits from those who’ve been claiming for more than 12 months if they don’t comply with conditions set by their work coach
New legislation will change rules to remove benefits entirely from the long-term unemployed who ‘don’t accept available work'.
The update came in a speech by the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak last week to the Centre for Social Justice, in which he outlined -
'... a package of sweeping reforms to put work at the heart of welfare and deliver on his 'moral mission' to give everyone who is able to work, the best possible chance of staying in, or returning to work.'
Mr Sunak said that in the next parliament the government will change the rules to remove benefits entirely from the long-term unemployed who 'don’t accept a job' -
'There is no excuse for fit and able claimants on unemployment benefits who can work, not to engage with the support available to them or adhere to conditions set by their Work Coach. If someone is assessed as able to work and continues to receive taxpayer-funded benefits, it is right and fair that we expect them to engage fully with this process. There are more than 450,000 people who have been unemployed for 6 months and well over a quarter of a million who have been unemployed for 12 months. These are people who will have had to access intensive employment support and training programmes. There is no reason those people should not be in work, especially when we have over 900,000 vacancies.'
As a result, Mr Sunak said that -
'We will legislate in the next parliament to change the rules so that anyone who has been on benefits for 12 months and doesn’t comply with conditions set by their Work Coach - including accepting available work - will have their unemployment claim closed and their benefits removed entirely. Because unemployment support should be a safety net - never a lifestyle choice.'
The announcement follows the launch of November 2023's Back to Work Plan that introduced proposals including the closure of claims of those who 'refuse to engage' with the jobcentre that the Work and Pensions Secretary said would mean no claimant should reach 18 months of unemployment in receipt of their full benefits if they have not taken 'every reasonable step to comply with Jobcentre support'.
NB - new DWP statistics released on the same day as the Prime Minister's speech, Long-term out of work and 'Searching for Work claimants on Universal Credit, show that in January 2024 there were 1.231 million claimants in the 'searching for work' conditionality group and, of these, 474,000 had been searching for work, or more work, for six months or more, 320,000 had been searching for work for 12 months or more and 223,000 had been in the group for 18 months or more.

New AET regulations introduced despite SSAC warning against increasing thresholds while gaps remain in the evidence base for their effectiveness
Rejecting Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC) advice for a slower or phased implementation of the increases to the Administrative Earnings Threshold (AET), DWP says it is 'committed to providing more intensive support to in-work customers'.
Following previous rises in the AET in both September 2022 and January 2023, the Chancellor announced in his March 2023 budget that there would be a further increase and, to that end, regulations were laid last week that increase the thresholds to £892 for individual claimants and £1,437 for couples with effect from 13 May 2024 (equivalent to 18 and 29 hours per week respectively at the national living wage).
NB - claimants earning below the AET are placed in the Intensive Work Search (IWS) group and are required to take active steps to move into work or increase their earnings.
However, in a letter to the Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride dated 8 March 2024 (but published by the DWP 22 April 2024), SSAC Chair Dr Stephen Brien advises that the (then) draft regulations were being taken on formal reference by the Committee due to a number of concerns, including that -
Accordingly, the Committee sets out a series of recommendations, including that the Department should -
Dr Brien concludes -
'In the absence of a persuasive rationale for the current timetable for full implementation, we are of the strong view that the Department should review its current plan for these regulations to come into force... and take the time necessary to continue to build its evidence base, ensuring it understands more fully the impacts, risks, and what potential mitigations may be required.'
However, while the DWP's formal response to the SSAC - published alongside Dr Brien's letter - acknowledges the need for further evaluation it rejects the recommendation to delay or slow down implementation -
'The Department is committed to delivering the increase to the AET and provide more intensive support to in-work customers... Jobcentre managers continually prioritise operational activity and the activities our work coaches undertake. Operational decisions are always made to ensure customers have the best outcomes possible. As with previous changes to the AET, operational managers will ensure that the pace of rollout of this change is aligned with both their available work coach resource and the need to deliver other priority activities.'

Chair of the Work and Pensions Select Committee says the DWP has done nothing to stop carers building up huge overpayments of benefit despite knowing what people are earning
Highlighting the Department's access to real-time information from HMRC, Work and Pensions Committee Chair says that 'carrying on in that way is not right'.
In a debate in Westminster Hall on 24 April 2024 - following recent media reports of claimants who have earned above the carer's allowance earnings limit resulting in large overpayments and, in some cases, prosecution for fraud - Committee Chair Stephen Timms said -
'How has the Department allowed overpayments which, in some cases, clearly cover quite a few years, to accumulate? From real-time information from His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, the Department knows what people are earning, and it can stop payment of carer’s allowance to those who are no longer eligible. Indeed, the Government’s response to the [Select Committee's 2019 report] confirmed that there is an automatic notification when weekly net pay exceeds the carer’s allowance earnings limit, yet the Department does nothing, instead allowing people to build up these huge overpayments, and then prosecuting them. Carrying on in that way is not right.'
The Westminster Hall debate on carer's allowance is available from Hansard. Also see next news item...

DWP says that large overpayments of carer’s allowance have arisen where claims were made before HMRC income alerts were introduced
During the Work and Pensions evidence session, Mr Latto confirmed that the Department receives regular monthly alerts from HMRC via the Verify Earnings and Pensions (VEP) system that was introduced for carer's allowance in 2018, and that it has an algorithm to identify which of those alerts are most likely to indicate an overpayment, either due to undeclared income or earnings having risen over the weekly carer's allowance limit (currently £151).
Responding to a question as to how claimants have built up overpayments of up to £20,000 despite these alerts, Mr Latto went on to say -
'... the issue will be if they have been on carer's allowance for a long time, particularly if they were there before VEPs existed... they may have built up overpayments over quite a long period, and by the time that we've uncovered them, it's something we're seeing in the press reporting at the moment.'
However, when asked to comment on a recent carer's allowance overpayment prosecution in which the judge said that he was 'truly unimpressed' with the Department's handling of the case, DWP Director for Fraud, Error and Debt Strategy Vikki Knight said -
'All that I would say, you wouldn't expect me to discuss individual cases and I want to be absolutely clear that the DWP does not prosecute. We will investigate where we've had those cases. We will refer that evidence from our investigators to our Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and then they will base it on the public interest test and then they will take that to the courts and the courts will decide on that.'
Pressed for a clearer response, DWP Minister Mims Davies added that -
'We are a learning organisation, but I would hasten to add that in all cases there's always more that obviously the judge has looked at, the CPS has looked at. Therefore what we see in the paper isn't always the whole picture.'
The Work and Pensions Committee evidence session on carer's allowance is available from parliament.tv

DWP has issued almost 100,000 civil penalties in respect of overpaid carer’s allowance since 2020, amounting to almost £5 million
Work and Pensions Minister also confirmed that, over the same period, 225 administrative penalties have been accepted with a total value of more than £410,000.
Responding to a written question in the House of Commons about the number of people who have received fines for overpayments of carer's allowance, DWP Minister Paul Maynard advised that a total of 96,100 civil penalties have been issued since 2020 -
Financial years - Volume of civil penalties - Value (£m)
Mr Maynard reported that, over the same period, a total of 225 administrative penalties (offered as an alternative to prosecution) have been accepted with a total value of £416,700.
Note: in a separate written answer, Mr Maynard also advised that, since February 2022, there have been 119 cases accepted for prosecution for benefit fraud by the Crown Prosecution Service where carer’s allowance was the primary overpayment.
Mr Maynard's written answer is available from parliament.uk

DWP confirms it is allocating £2.5 million to local authorities to support the administration of the Verify Earnings and Pensions (VEP) service
In Housing Benefit Subsidy Circular S6/2024, the DWP advises housing benefit staff that this year's funding allocations will be up to £2.5 million (compared to the £9.7 million allocated for 2023/2024) which will continue to help provide local authorities with the capacity to process VEP tasks during the financial year ending March 2025.
NB - the Circular advises that local authorities are required to -
The DWP also confirmed that each local authority will receive a single upfront payment, as set out in Annex A of the circular, in the week commencing 22 April 2024.
S6/2024: Funding for the Verify Earnings and Pensions service for the financial year ending March 2025 is available from gov.uk

Government commits to issuing a code of practice in relation to DWP’s new powers to access claimants’ bank account data
The government has confirmed that a code of practice is being drafted to regulate the DWP's use of future powers to access data from claimants' bank accounts. The draft code will be available in summer 2024 before Department carries out a 'test and learn' exercise in early 2025.
With the Data Protection and Digital Information Bill (DPDIB) set to provide new powers for the DWP to compel financial institutions to monitor accounts and relay data about possible benefit fraud and error, concerns were raised in the House of Lords committee debate on the Bill (24 April) about the proportionality of the measures, and in particular, the lack of a code of practice to limit their scope.
However, Work and Pensions Parliamentary Under-Secretary, Viscount Younger assured members that -
'... the code of practice is already in development; we are working positively with around eight leading financial institutions through an established working group that meets regularly to shape the code.'
While Viscount Younger said that the draft code will not be available to Parliament before the Bill progresses to Report stage, he nevertheless provided some detail on what it will contain -
'... it will provide guidance on issues such as the nature of the power and to whom it will apply. It will also provide information on safeguards, cover data security responsibilities and provide information on the appeals processes should a third party wish to dispute a request.'
Note: despite the update from the Minister, Labour's Baroness Sherlock said that she remains concerned, stating -
'These powers could do anything from something that might sound very proportionate to something that might sound entirely disproportionate, and we simply have not heard anything that enables us to make a judgment... I therefore ask the Government to think again before Report about ways in which they might provide assurance about a more contained and proportionate approach to these measures.'

Public Accounts Committee (PAC) warns that a significant number of vulnerable claimants may lose their benefits by failing to migrate to universal credit
The Public Accounts Committee calls on the DWP to ensure that legacy benefit claimants are not 'cast into financial hardship due to a bureaucratic change'.
In a new report, Progress in implementing Universal Credit, the Committee highlights that the DWP is in the process of moving 900,000 legacy benefit claimants to universal credit. However, the Committee notes that -
'Around one in five households on tax credits who received a migration notice have not moved to universal credit and so have had their benefit stopped. The median value of tax credits received by people who did not claim universal credit was £3,200 a year. The Department has a limited understanding of why some people do not switch to universal credit, but says it is reassured by having received only 20 complaints about the migration process from April to December 2023. But this does not provide sufficient assurance that people are not falling into hardship.'
Highlighting that the Department is now planning a survey of people who have not claimed universal credit, having before not been routinely in contact with people to ask why they are not claiming, the Committee adds that -
'Organisations who work with benefit claimants are also concerned about the proportion of legacy benefit claimants not transferring to universal credit and the financial impact it may have on them. The Department expects the non-claim rate for households claiming its legacy benefits, who are being migrated from April 2024, will be much lower at around 4 per cent. However, even a small proportion of people not transferring to universal credit could translate into a substantial number of people facing financial hardship.'
As a result, the Committee recommends that -
'The Department should publish by the end of August 2024 the universal credit non-claim rates by type of legacy benefit, and set out the action it is taking in the event that the non-claim rates are higher than expected. Before the end of the year, the Department should also publish the results of the survey of those tax credit claimants who did not apply for universal credit alongside a statement of what lessons it would learn.'
The Committee also recommends that the Department should -
Turning to transitional protection for those migrating to universal credit, the Committee notes that organisations who work with benefit claimants are concerned about how the Department calculates amounts that are due, how accurate its calculations are, and the risk that people are receiving incorrect payments which they cannot check themselves. As a result, the Committee recommends that -
'The Department should explain better in its guidance and the migration notices it sends to claimants how transitional protection is calculated, using simple language and examples based on real cases.'
In addition, the Committee says that it is not convinced that universal credit is achieving the scale of expected economic benefits -
'The government predicts that universal credit will generate £10.4 billion of benefits a year once fully rolled-out, with £6.1 billion coming from increased employment. However, analysis of DWP’s evidence base that universal credit is benefiting the labour market found that the DWP cherry-picked positive facts and also made other assumptions not supported by empirical evidence.'
The Committee also highlighted that the proportion of universal credit overpaid in 2022/2023 was 12.8 per cent (£5.5 billion) which is down from 14.7 per cent (£5.9 billion) in 2021/2022 but still significantly above pre-pandemic levels.
The Committee adds that, when questioned as to whether universal credit is fulfilling its intended objective of reducing fraud and error compared to the legacy system, the DWP fell back on its explanation of a societal increase in the propensity to commit fraud rather than providing assurance about the actions it is taking. As a result, the report encourages future Committees to keep a close eye on the issue and to continue to hold the DWP to account for its progress.
Committee Chair Meg Hillier said on 26 April -
'Our Committee has scrutinised universal credit since its inception. We must not forget how massive a change it is to how benefits are delivered, impacting millions of people. This means if the transition from legacy benefits to universal credit fails even an apparently small proportion of people, it will lead to real world misery for thousands. The DWP must make sure that people are not cast into financial hardship due to a bureaucratic change, and that robust support is in place for those vulnerable claimants who need it most.'

DWP issued guidance for local authorities participating in the Housing Benefit Award Accuracy Initiative in 2024/2025
New housing benefit circular advises on fraud and error activities that local authorities are expected to undertake in return for additional funding.
In HB Circular A5/2024, the DWP confirms that local authorities participating in the initiative - a five-year programme that started in April 2020 designed to reduce housing benefit fraud and error - will receive additional funding for the fifth and final financial year of the project ending March 2025 to enable them to undertake the following activities -
The DWP also acknowledges that a large proportion of cases identified as high-risk and therefore subject to an FCR involve working-age claimants who will also be subject to migration to universal credit action during 2024/2025. As a result, the Department advises -
'... we still expect local authorities to undertake FCRs on working age cases but will want to consider the complexity and duration needed to complete any of the working age FCRs highlighted as high risk (as there may be a risk of migration to universal credit action occurring before activities are complete). Local authorities are advised they can move down the list to choose cases that make best use of the funding provided, including pension age reviews which are not subject to migration to universal credit.'
In addition, the Department provides similar advice in relation to the other award accuracy work -
'It is expected there will be a significant reduction in the overall working age housing benefit caseload. So, we ask local authorities to complete the HBMS referrals and SERs as soon as possible as this will maximise the opportunity to remove fraud and error in the housing benefit caseload ahead of universal credit migration action.'
Note: indicative activity volumes and funding for each local authority are set out at Annex D to the circular, while HB Subsidy Circular S5/2024, also published today, confirms the individual funding allocations.

Conservative MP brands plan to scrap WCA and allow work coaches to decide fitness for work ‘a crazy idea’
Nigel Mills made the comments as the Commons work and pensions committee was taking evidence from campaigning organisations on the government’s employment plans.
Under plans announced last spring, the WCA would be scrapped and disabled claimant's who cannot work would only be able to qualify for a new health element of universal credit if they also receive PIP, DLA or ADP.
But this would leave it to DWP’s work coaches – who will usually have no health-related qualifications – to decide if a disabled person should carry out work-related activity.
The WCA will not be scrapped until after the next general election and not until 2026 at the earliest, DWP has said.
Mills, a Conservative member of the committee, said:
“My experience of constituents is they don’t generally have a great deal of time or regard for their work capability assessment medical professional.”
He added:
“The idea that I’m going to trust a work coach and share my biggest issues and concerns and seek their support and want their counselling if they’ve just told me I’m not getting the extra benefit is extraordinarily unlikely, isn’t it?
It’s just going to destroy the relationship between them and the claimant.
I just can’t imagine many work coaches are going to fancy this sort of flicking through the file and going, ‘You do get the extra money… you don’t.’
It seems like a crazy idea.”
Later in the evidence session, the mental health charity Mind raised serious concerns about government reforms to tighten the WCA in the years leading to its eventual abolition. Nil Güzelgün, interim head of policy and campaigns at the mental health charity Mind, raised concerns about the changes to the substantial risk criteria, and stressed how important the current protections are. She told the committee that the safeguards were:
“critical for people with mental health problems so they cannot be retraumatised or hospitalised because of activities that are required by the jobcentre or work coaches”.

2024.04.28 07:51 Vampragon43 AFK Journey, a fair review of a game I really wanted to like

Before I start I have some things to say in advance: I have spent a great many hours on the game and I've gotten to Dark Forest 7, AFK Progress 351, and Resonance Level 90-ish (my highest level unit is 95). I think I have a very good team comp for my level with L+ Lucius, M Hewynn, M Florabelle, M Cecie, L+ Antandra and several L mages for flexibility.
And before anyone says it, I do not want to hear "it gets better". I am sure it does get better, but unless it has Warframe's 6/10 to 10/10 levels of getting better, then I am simply not interested. I do not solely have negative things to say about AFK Journey, as there are many positives I have to point out, but it would be disingenuous of me to pretend that those negatives don't outweigh the positives so prepare for quite a bit of negativity.
Generally speaking I don't regularly play most mobile games aside from Legends of Runeterra for a variety of reasons, the main ones being that they take everything wrong with the video game industry and amplify it to the extreme (predatory monetization, fan service, etc.) but every once in a while a mobile game will genuinely surprise me, as was the case for Legends of Runeterra, OPUS: Rocket of Whispers and some others. And while I do give mobile games a great amount of leeway in the graphical and aesthetic department, I otherwise hold them to the same standards as non-mobile games.
But anyways, without further ado...

Story and Aesthetic:

After seeing a lot of ads for AFK Journey I gave it a try to see if the game itself could do its high-quality advertisements any justice. And at the start, it definitely did. The graphics and aesthetics are phenomenal, and not just by mobile game standards. The story was simple but very engaging while the cutscenes were usually just as good as the game advertised. While I do have qualms about the game spoiling you with summoned characters before you even meet them in the story (especially Cecia), that's more of a nitpick than anything. The story is compelling, and that's where the problem starts: the game will not by any means let me enjoy the story without grinding me to a halt every five minutes.

AFK:

Before anyone says it, yes I know that AFK is literally the name of the game, but that is not an excuse for bad design decisions. The game introduces hypofiends, powerful mobs that stop any progress you're making and force you to go do the AFK Challenge and bring up your Hero Resonance before you can even try to fight it. And that wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for several things: Number one, they are way too frequent and the amount that the force you to grind is unacceptable, especially when you can finish grinding to beat the AFK challenge requirement only to get halted by the hypofiend battle itself. I remember one time during the Dark Forest storyline, I had just finished one long hypofiend grind just to get blocked by another one literally less than 5 minutes later without even getting any real story progress! These hypofiend roadblocks can require upwards of 40 AFK Challenge levels, and that's only at the time of making this review! And that's problem number two; the game's progression just gets progressively more slow and aggravating. During Ryeham's story, I remember having to wait 1 hour just to get enough resources for 2 levels in total, and even then it was way too slow. Now I'm in the dark forest and an entire hour won't even get me one level! For a single hero!
AFK Journey is very obviously one of those games intentionally designed to frustrate you into buying things to make the grind go quicker, and that's the biggest reason I simply can't enjoy it. I understand that the game needs to make money but this is not the right way to go about it and there are far better ways to monetize the game that aren't predatory. I also understand that there are other ways to get the level-up currency but those aren't much better. At the time of writing this I've found every single chest in the map, done every single available side quest, and bought as much of the currency outright from Keith's store as I could and after all that I've only barely had enough currency to keep my characters leveled enough to stay active for just an hour or two without without going AFK again to wait for resources.

Gacha and Overall Gameplay:

As an actual point of praise for AFK Journey, I have found that the game is actually very generous with how many summon letters it gives you, and while it's no Legends of Runeterra, I'd say it's about the same level of generous as Fire Emblem Heroes, or maybe a bit less.
I really like the gameplay of AFK Journey because it reminds me of Teamfight Tactics, in fact it's almost exactly the same premise, but the characters have more gameplay depth as they have more than just one ability and of course it has an actual storyline. I love the strategizing element of the game which is why it's such a shame that so many modes literally do not let you use ultimates manually. If they did, the game would be so much better.
The characters themselves are actually diverse and fun to explore, even if some of them have laughably bad voice acting. There's so many unique characters and while almost none of them are Heroes of the Storm or Paladins levels of unique, they are still special enough that none of them ever feel like the same character aside from maybe a few marksmen characters. My favorite character is Florabelle, whose entire gimmick is to have a bunch of minions fight while she herself is just there in the backlines, and that's hilarious. I'm a fan of strategy games and my favorite archetype in hero-based games is a character that makes their own squad of goons to beat enemies to a pulp. Florabelle, Zagara in Heroes of the Storm, Yorick in LoL, Revenant in Warframe, etc.
The only problem I have is when you get hard countered. I have several experiences in Arena where an Antandra is literally unkillable even when she's the only one left and my team is completely focusing her, including all the summons, which causes me to lose because of the one genuine terrible mechanic that should have never been added: the time limit. There is nothing, and I mean nothing more insufferable than actually beginning to turn a fight around and start winning only for you to realize that you don't have enough time to finish it. And the worst part is, in Arena you still lose points from the time limit, so you can just cheese your defense team by making them unkillable until the time runs out for anyone who challenges them as is the case for my aforementioned Antandra experiences. The worst part is, there's no counterplay I have to it because while I have several mages, they're just not as good as my physical DPS heroes so even if I brought them out I still wouldn't be able to win because then they couldn't kill the enemy DPS fast enough. It's just a case of not getting good RNG and that just sucks.

Game Modes:

Other than the previously mentioned abysmal experience of the story grind, the game modes of AFK Journey are pretty good. I'm indifferent towards Arena and Legend Trial as they are very bland and basic modes but Dream Realm is pretty fun until you hit the problem of it basically being a glorified bigger-scale AFK Challenge. I also haven't done much of Battle Drills because I'm not in another clan, I'm just in my own.
Honor Duel and Arcane Labyrinth are particularly amazing modes because of their roguelite aspects. Arcane Labyrinth for example is the exact opposite of the problems I have with the game; instead of frequently invalidating your team by hard countering it, it gives you the opportunity to fix your team's weakness while still having to take into account that doing too much of that will make you not strong enough to kill the boss. And that's what I want to see more of: strategy. Aside from the boss, Honor Duel is mostly similar and frankly it's a far better mode than Arena.

Conclusion:

AFK Journey is a great game that could honestly be fixed easily. Remember Summoners War where leveling up runes had a RNG mechanic where it could fail and waste your resources? Then the developers realized it was a stupid mechanic and they later removed it. Do something like that.
Heck, all you honestly have to do is just lower the level up grind by like 70%, and instantly this 4/10 game turns into a 7/10. 7/10 just being my idea of a safe guess because I haven't really gotten far enough to see how the game turns out later on because I just find it too demanding.
Regardless, I believe I have been more than fair with this review. I may or may not keep playing AFK Journey, but if I do keep playing it, I will not be playing very much because it's just not worth the stress it gives me. Hopefully the developers make a patch that addresses these problems but I wouldn't hold my breath for it. I'll see you guys later, thanks for reading to the end :)

2024.04.28 06:59 m0henjo MSITM Complete - My Experience

My background - I've been in the IT industry for 25 years now. I have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science that I received from a traditional university just over 20 years ago. I started as the sole IT person for a local health care clinic, grew into a senior leader in IT with a handful of direct reports, and then moved back into technical roles (administrator, engineer, architect positions). I didn't know what to expect from WGU. My motivation for enrolling and pursuing the Master's degree was selfishly for two specific reasons: I was looking for a growth/learning challenge, and my employer would reimburse up to a certain amount per year towards WGU (as well as included a discount). So off I went.
My experience leading up to start day was pretty easy. My organization held an all-staff get together in September 2023, where two people from WGU had a booth. A coworker and I approached, I got a business card, spent a few days thinking on it, then reached out. I got in touch with my enrollment counselor who did a great job helping me navigate the process. I think I was lucky - I got the ball rolling early enough (October) for a January 1, 2024 start. No issues getting my old transcripts at all. I was doing self pay (so I could get reimbursed), and orientation was a breeze on the 15th of December.
Below are the classes I took, in the order I took them, the timeline, my general thoughts, and a summary of the tasks.

LZT2 - Power, Influence and Leadership
Started - 1/1/2024
Completed - 1/8/2024
Thoughts: The reading material was quite good, relevant and aligned with the theme of the class. For my first class, this was really the best. It was very straight forward, and I didn't find any problems getting through the material or getting through the assignments.
Two PA's to pass. Both were about 5 pages each for me.

MBT2 - Technological Globalization
Started - 1/7/2024
Completed 1/13/2024
Thoughts: A lot of reading from different sources. Some of the material went pretty deep (some of the global marketing and global laws), and a few of the blog/articles were pretty outdated. Two readings from the World Economic Forums around Technology Trends were over 10 years old. I started this class while waiting for the results of LZT2 and its final task.
There was just one PA for this and it was quite fun - making recommendations on changes to a proposed IT Strategic Plan. This really made me get creative and think, which I enjoyed. Additionally, the instructor sent an email containing a video guide to navigate the PA - this was hugely important and helpful.
One PA to pass - mine was 6 pages.

C962 - Current and Emerging Technologies
Started - 1/13/2024
Completed - 2/4/2024
Thoughts: I started off worried at the amount of reading - you pick three books from a series, read them in their entirety, and write about them. I decided that in order to be successful in absorbing the books, I'd get them on audible (with my own subscription and credits) and listen to them. For me, this was very helpful. After I finished the first book, I started the task and quickly hit a brick wall. The questions were not exactly clear, and I ultimately needed to reach out to the instructor for guidance after a number of rewrites. This is what caused this class to take so long to complete for me.
One PA to pass - mine was 8 pages.

C954 - Information Technology Management
Started - 2/4/2024
Completed - 2/13/2024
Thoughts: There was a lot of reading material as well, which I felt was pretty valuable. This was the first proctored exam (the Objective Assessment, or OA), and I really didn't enjoy it as much as I did the prior PA's. I've read a lot of horror stories about the proctored exams, but mine was pretty straight forward. No problems getting signed in, doing the test, etc. The proctor was a bit hard to heaunderstand, but that's the way it goes.
One OA to pass.

C928 - Financial Management for IT Professionals
Started - 2/13/2024
Completed - 2/20/2024
Thoughts: The reading was very dry on this one, which is a shame because I was looking forward to this class. I took a look at the tasks early on and found that I was able to attempt them pretty early (the concepts in the task were already familiar to me). If you've done any budgeting or forecasting in the past, it will be familiar.
Three PA's to pass. Task 1 and 2 were each 4 pages for me, while Task 3 was 3 pages.

C948 - Technical Communication
Started - 2/18/2024
Completed - 3/1/2024
Thoughts: This was probably my least favorite class throughout the program - the reading was almost as dry as the Financial Management. I decided again to look at the tasks early on and make an attempt at Task 1 pretty early. This task was the only time during the entire program I had an issue with an evaluation. The task was kicked back, with the evaluator comments saying that I failed to include an item, but I had. My course instructor agreed with me, so she was able to submit it for appeal. The evaluator came back and wanting something different this time - "...add a few more sentences here..." Sure. A lot of people on the reddit's would have been angry at this, and while it caused a head tilt, I think "...vague and changing requirements..." is a reality in IT, so I just added more sentences and passed the darn thing.
Task 2 was no fun, not at all. In the example communications that you have to write, you have to explain how and why you used specific fonts, font sizes, paragraphs, or bullets to communicate your thoughts. I understood the intent of the assignment - constructing and communicating a topic in a professional email or document is hugely important, but justifying the "why" I thought was rough.
Two PA's to pass. Task 1 was 7 pages for me and Task 2 was a total of 8 pages.

C929 - IT Sourcing and Development in a Global Economy
Started - 2/21/2024
Completed - 3/3/2024
Thoughts: The coursework and task focused on outsourcing - not exactly one of my personal favorite topics. The task was mostly enjoyable though, having to compare two responses to a fictitious RFP. There were aspects of the task which were difficult to think about answers for (the negotiation portion, specifically). I was absolutely certain my submission was coming back for revision, but it didn't. I ultimately did enjoy the task.
One PA to pass - mine was 11 pages.

C927 - Managing Technology Operations and Innovation
Started - 3/1/2024
Completed - 3/13/2024
Thoughts: This was a really fun class, though I struggled mightily on Task 1. I enjoyed thinking about how to better the fictitious companies legacy environments, but where I was struggling was the requirement that everything have a security risk with two different mitigation strategies. A lot of my solutions involved cloud platforms, thinking of SaaS and PaaS offerings, and the security risks and mitigation strategies are largely the same for the different options I chose. I spent two days with full writer's block before I just hammered it out.
Two PA's to pass. My Task 1 was 4 pages. Task 2 was 5 pages total.

C783 - Project Management
Started - 3/8/2024
Completed - 3/24/2024
Thoughts: This is the "gear check" class. The penultimate course. The second of two OA's, and when I saw how much coursework there was, I thought I was done. It was very overwhelming. I'm familiar with project management at a high level, but I wasn't familiar with a lot of the CAPM terms. I actually didn't read any of the material. Instead, I watched the Udemy course that the instructor emailed us. I watched it at between 1.5x or 2x (because at 1x it was something like 35 hours of video).
This course took me a long time to finish because halfway through I had to say goodbye to my second and final dog. Took me about 3 days afterwards to get back into study mode.
One OA to pass - it is NOT as difficult as the Udemy practice exams. The questions are more similar to the pre-assessment.

C498 - Capstone
Started - 3/8/2024
Completed - 4/27/2024
Thoughts: No, this class didn't take me two months to complete. My program mentor unlocked Project Management and Capstone at the same time, and by clicking "start course", I'd get a course instructor assigned, I can look at the task requirements, and start thinking about it all. I didn't start doing any writing or real thinking about this class until 3/24 when I passed C78.
I had a project idea in mind, so I met with the instructor and got that approved from his stand point. That was easy, and that was Task 1. It does require that conversation with the instructor, and he needs to approve your topic before you submit Task 1 for evaluation (he signs it, prints it as PDF, sends it back to you, and you submit the PDF for evaluation. Easy).
I then took two weeks for a pre-planned (before I started at WGU) vacation, where I did zero writing whatsoever. Sadly, when I got back, it took me another 3-5 days to get back into hardcore study mode. But I slowly started to piece some things together. This really was a fun writing project, and I used charts, graphs, and other things in the documents. I built a Gantt chart of the entire project so that I could take screenshots of timelines and such. I think it was a lot of those charts and screen shots that helped.
Three PA's to pass.
Task 1 for me was a total of 3 pages. Task 2 for me was 57 pages, and Task 3 for me was exactly 40 pages.

Summary
Surely you've not read everything here. I saw someone else give their thoughts and experience class-by-class, and I'd actually referenced that for every class I started, just to get some perspective. I hope this helps someone else.
Early on my intent was not to "accelerate" through. While some may not like how fast myself and others go through these programs, what I've come to realize is that I've not done the learning for this degree over the last 4 months. I've spent 25 years in the field learning many of these competencies - it was through WGU where I could prove that I did learn them. I quite enjoyed this program. My mentor was absolutely amazing - she gave me the periodic encouragement I needed and was great to work with!

I’m The Music Fan Man Infotainer’s Introduction

2021 12-28

Who I Am

Hi. I am The Music Fan Man. At the Music Or Lose It channel, I make various videos: commentaries; interviews; and reviews of songs.
It is my pleasure to be acquainted with you online. Feel free to ask me questions in the comments section.

What Sets Me Apart

I review songs from the perspective of an ordinary music fan. When I was getting into music as a teenager in the late 90s, I’d buy music magazines. I felt the reviewers wrote about music in a way I could not at all relate to. When I created Music Or Lose It in 2022, my goal was to discuss music in a manner I feel is utmost connecting. Rather than get into the technical details of a song I’m reviewing, I prefer to discuss how it connects with me personally. If a song reminds me of something personal, I can share that. For example, when I reviewed the song “The Actor” by Alt-J, I began crying while thinking about how drugs had impacted my life as someone who’s always been sober and drug free yet significantly impacted by family members’ addictions. Only I have my specific life experience that’s going to impact how I connect with a song.

First Music Memories

I remember having a cassette player and cassette tapes as a little kid. I had a Jackson 5 album. I’m unsure which one. I also remember having the 1984 album “Stay Hungry” by Twisted Sister with their song “We're Not Gonna Take It.” I must have been around 4 years old still living in southern California where I was born.
By the time I was of preschool or kindergarten age in the 80’s, my family had moved to northern California. We initially lived in a small town named Sutter. In either preschool or kindergarten, at school we sang a song as a group. The boys, in masculine kid’s voice, sang “Abraham Lincoln” and the girls would follow with “Gerrrrrrrrroge Washington.” Doing an online search I’m unable to figure out what that song was.
I remember being exposed to a physical record of children singing "On Top of Spaghetti." Doing research for this post, it appears to have been from the album “On Top Of Spaghetti” by Tom Glazer And The Do-Re-Mi Children's Chorus. I am concluding this because the Discogs website entry for this album shows a version of “Puff (The Magic Dragon)” was included in that album. At around that age, I remember hearing that song too. I feel like my parents must have gotten me a record player and that album. Then again, maybe it was just available at school.

When I Became A Fan Of Music

As a teen living in the Yuba-Sutter region, I remember my mother listened to a lot of FM radio. She also seemed to turn on cable channels VH1 and CMT which primarily aired music videos back in the 90s. There was a weekly show called VH1 Top 21. Click here to see a clip appearing to be from a 1994 episode. I must have started intentionally paying attention to music in 1991. I remember the eventfulness of the music videos for the album “Dangerous” by Michael Jackson. I also remember the 1991 video “I Can't Dance” by Genesis in which Phil Collins does parody of Michael Jackson dancing.

First Music I Bought Myself

The first music I bought myself was probably in cassette singles form, spending allowance money given to me from my parents. I was around age 12 or 13. Any one of the following 1993 songs could have been the first single I bought: "Another Sad Love Song" by Toni Braxton; "All That She Wants" by Ace Of Base; or "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" by Meat Loaf. I also remember owning the above-mentioned 1991 “Dangerous” album by Michael Jackson. I can’t remember if I bought “Dangerous” or if it was a gift to me.
I kept wanting a CD player so badly. Before my parents bought me a CD player, I bought myself my first CD. It was the 1993 self-titled album from a band named Dig. I eagerly wanted to own the album’s song “Believe.” I remember going to the mall at Yuba-City and buying it at the music store. It was the only song I enjoyed of the 12 songs from that album. “Believe” wasn’t very popular. By then I was watching MTV and they didn’t play it often. I especially wanted to own the song so that I could listen to it whenever I wanted to. It wasn’t until much later that I finally got a CD player sometime in 1994 or 1995. I was so happy!

Music Influences

Sometime around 1994 or 1995, I began listening to FM radio. I can’t remember my hometown’s local FM station call letters. I think it was nicknamed “Cool 104.” It appears not to exist anymore. The station played VH1-type pop music. I could also access Sacramento’s very popular KSFM 102.5FM which played rap, hip hop, and R&B. Most of all, I listened to Sacramento-based alternative rock station KWOD 106.5FM and their Shawn & Jeff Morning Show.
I started writing my own Top 20 Songs Of The Week countdown around this time. It was written on paper that I kept mostly for myself. I did this because too often I disagreed with the MTV, VH1, and CMT top 20 countdown selections. I also usually disagreed with the Billboard Hot 100 chart posted at the local music store. I am an only-child. I was a closeted-gay teen at a time when American society was still mostly unaccepting of homosexuality. I was awkward in junior high. That is when and where I awkwardly met a girl my same age. She became my greatest friend. We bonded over sharing music together. We became nearly inseparable. Despite having told her my secret of being gay during our teen years, we were both in denial. She became my wife at the age of 20 in 2000.
From 1994-1998 I made my own fictitious music awards show. It was hosted by me in 1994; my childhood friend Jeremy in 1995; a high school classmate named Angie in 1996; a coworker named Robert from my first job at Montgomery Wards (I unloaded trucks) in 1997; and lastly my parents in 1998. I initially used a broken, handheld cassette player. I’d watch all of the music award shows on TV and recorded the acceptance speeches onto blank tape. If any of the award shows’ winners matched my winners, I’d use those acceptance speeches. If not, the host of my award show would say something to the effect of, “They’re not here. I’ll accept the award on their behalf.” I also recorded live music performances from MTV and VH1 to use for my fictitious awards show. Later when I got my CD player, it also played cassettes and had a radio built in. Around 1996 I somehow figured out that my home’s cable could connect to the back of the CD player enabling me to record onto blank cassettes directly from MTV and VH1 broadcasts. Yet those recordings were staticky. I didn’t even own my first computer at this time. Recording the fictitious awards show was simply a hobby for my own enjoyment.
For a 1996 high school economics class group project, we had to make a commercial for a fictitious business. I led the group. We made a commercial for our store “Music World.” In the video I explained, “…when you go to Music World, you’re not gonna say ‘Can I find The Presidents of the United States of America CD?’ and they’re gonna tell you to go register to vote somewhere else.” Sometime in either 1996 or 1997, I discovered one of my school’s staff members had an unofficial class teaching students how to play music on a large speaker-system. He had some type of promotional CDs with all current songs available. If I passed his quiz regarding how to use the equipment, I was told I’d be allowed to play music for the school in the social areas during lunch. I passed the quiz yet somehow - I can’t remember why - the Lindhurst High School officials decided against allowing lunchtime music.
In 1998, for a required “senior project” research presentation class, I learned about publishing songs. I wrote a song with my later-to-be-wife. I was aided by a music teaching mentor. She was the wife of a science teacher from my high school yet she didn’t teach a class there. The song was titled “I Used To Be Insane.” It seems I no longer have a copy. Nothing ever became of it. I did however pass the class. California standards being as low as they are, despite mostly getting Cs and Ds, I graduated class of 1998. Regarding college, I only took one class in 2000. It was a public speaking class. I got an A.

The Music Fan Man In 1998
I wanted to become a DJ on the radio at the local Cool 104 station or at Sacramento’s KWOD 106.5. Yet somehow I let the dream die. I became employed as security guard and never found the time to pursue my goal of being a radio DJ. In 2023 I made a radio newscaster demo. I intended to use the demo to apply to be a news reader or DJ for local station 1600 KUBA AM. I don’t remember if I ever followed through or not.
In July 2023 life took me in an entirely different direction. By then I had come out of the closet. On 07/05/03, I started the first LGBT group in the Yuba-Sutter region. By October, my marriage was over. I led the group until the end of 2007. In 2008 I became employed with the “NO on 8” campaign attempting to preserve the freedom to marry for Californian same-gender couples. This remains one of the largest political campaigns in United States history. This took me out of my hometown for the first time. I worked at the “NO on 8” headquarters at the Castro in San Francisco. Being from the small town Yuba-Sutter area, it was surreal to find myself working for such a high-stakes political campaign in a massive city. In October of 2008 I moved to the campaign’s Sacramento office. Prop 8 passed unfortunately. The good news is marriage equality eventually prevailed due to a 2015 Supreme Court ruling.

In 2010 I made the bold decision to buy an SUV and live out of that. This was years before vanlife became trendy. I was renting a room in Concord, CA, while employed as a security guard. I was scheduled full time hours making decent money. Yet despite living modestly I was never able to save up money. Before moving into the SUV, I decided in the future I would live minimalist. Therefore I needed to transform my papers, photos, and home movies into digital files. I bought a cord to connect my VCR to my computer. The connection enabled me to transfer VHS-C home movies into MP4 files. The cord was part of a package that included a video editing program. This changed my life. I learned how to edit videos. In 2010 I began making political videos from the perspective of an independent. By 2011 I created my first channel on YouTube. Initially I was uploading political interviews and also vlogs about living out of my SUV. I kept up at it and ended up interviewing numerous famous people. Click here to see some screenshots of my celebrity interviews. Videos I made were featured by Huffington Post, The Advocate, and Good Day Sacramento.
The Music Fan Man’s Celebrity Interviews During The 10’s
By the end of 2017, I was in Los Angeles. I had been living out of my SUV on and off. My already-substantial medical conditions worsened. I had also become burned out covering politics. I then took a long hiatus for several years living very reclusively. During this time, I changed my political channel to Roadside Resident in anticipation of buying a van to live out of. Thereafter I made only a few videos updating my subscribers of my intent to upgrade from living out of a SUV to living out of a van.

When I Decided To Try Making A Living Enjoying Music

Around 2019 or 2020 (I guesstimate), I discovered music commentary channels Grady Smith and Professor of Rock. The more I watched their videos, the more I realized I wanted to make videos discussing music. The long-dormant wannabe radio DJ within me awakened.

Challenges

In the fall of 2020, I finally bought a van to live out of. I sometimes rented a room and I sometimes lived out of the van full time. In July 2022, I relocated the seldom active Roadside Resident channel to its own separate, new channel on YouTube – remodeling the existing channel with the premiere of Music Or Lose It. To summarize, my original channel from January 2011 showcasing my political interviews was briefly renamed Roadside Resident probably in 2019 (the exact date is uncertain). Then in July 2022 the channel was given a third embodiment: Music Or Lose It. Only time with tell if transforming my channel twice was a bad or good idea. In any case, it was such a joyous occasion to finally unleash the inner DJ inside of me in the form of a commentator, interviewer, and reviewer. Unfortunately, medical conditions hindered me from making videos on a consistently frequent basis. By February 2024, ailments necessitated returning to housing again.
My Music Or Lose It channel on YouTube struggled to get views after the July 2022 launch. In contrast, when I uploaded to my political channel back in 2011, my videos would automatically get lots of views. Back then I had a steady flow of new subscribers. YouTube then changed drastically becoming mostly corporatized. YouTube’s leadership seems intent on looping viewers to already-famous celebrities and “YouTubers” who built up their audience before the corporatization. I’ve watched tons of “how to succeed on YouTube” videos. Citing vague gibberish regarding algorithms, those videos are almost always unhelpful. There’s no meritocracy when audience reach is dictated by algorithms. The tools to build an audience as a no-name in a bedroom seem to have removed by big tech venues. At least my videos at the Music Or Lose It channels on Rumble and TikTok get a few thousand views.

What Keeps Me Going

I am encouraged to keep trying to succeed despite seemingly impossible odds. I see a vision of what Music Or Lose It can become and I love what I see. I visualize connecting music fans discussing wonderful new songs together. As I build up my success, I see an opportunity to uplift a lot of neglected music creators making human-uplifting, soul-moving music.

Moving Forward

I am presently seeking a standalone house to rent in Las Vegas. After moving in, I will get set up to film and podcast. Until day 1 of recording begins, I won’t get too excited. I don’t celebrate prematurely. If I can stay steady living where all my filming equipment is at one place, I feel hopeful I can regularly make Music Or Lose It videos.
What’s more, I have a bold idea to unite creators struggling to attain decent amounts of views/listens. After I get settled in the Vegas house, I will unveil the idea. In an era where big tech does so little to help lesser known creators, uniting into groups with a plan to attain success seems to be the way of the future.
The Music Or Lose It subreddit community was created in January 2022 and was dormant until October that year. This online community significantly expanded in 2024, hitting both the first 1k members milestone in January and then the first 2k members milestone in March. Also in March, just for fun, I began organizing a community vote for the Best Song Of The Month contest open to lesser known music creators. It is indeed a lot of fun. The subreddit community motivates me to keep going with my overall Music Or Lose It goals. I am tremendously motivated by the talented music creators who kindly share their personal art. I am especially inspired by the community’s thoughtful music fans who share their interesting perspectives in the comments section. I am a believer in "a rising tide lifts all boats" philosophy. In anticipation of a return to making Music Or Lose It videos, I am imagining how I can merge the subreddit community into my world of videomaking. I must figure out how to increase my viewership. I am confident I can do it. Videos about music superstars like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Kanye West will get more views than a video about a lesser-known creator. That’s reality. Yet it’s my goal to figure out how to merge my video discussions about the superstars with discussions about the amazingly-talented yet lesser known creators I’m meeting at this musicorloseittv community.

The Wildest Dream

My goal is to earn a living making my Music Or Lose It videos. I want my music discussion channel to be as successful as Professor of Rock and Not For Radio Podcast. I hope to eventually have 1-2 cohosts. I want it to be a go-to venue for music entertainers when they're promoting new projects.
I grew up experiencing poverty more often than not when I was younger. I remember the monotony of eating rice and beans for dinner night after night for a long time. Around my teen years, my parents became more equipped to treat me to allowance. This enabled me to buy cassettes and CDs. Their generosity enabled me to become a music fan. Yet a clear path how to succeed was not provided to me. I graduated from high school with only Cs and Ds. Into adulthood, despite living out of a sports utility vehicle with serious medical conditions, I taught myself how to edit videos. I ended up interviewing very famous celebrities. At my best, despite being a no-name from a small northern California town, I was gaining notable media attention momentum. Despite so many odds being against me, I have persevered.
I am determined to keep persevering. I will do everything within my power pursuing the success I envision for myself. Just as I gave my all to unite people by creating community when I led the first LGBT group in my hometown, I will give my all to uniting lesser known creators chasing our dreams together.
Thank you for reading.

2024.04.28 04:55 nulloperator_ Found Out my Parents used the Bible to justify Child S3x Crimes on Me

TW//Sexual Abuse//Physical Violence

Hi All, I'm a male between ages 20 and 30 and this is my childhood experience. I could use as much support as possible since I’m catching some backlash from my family for bringing this up.

BACKGROUND: CHILD ABUSE CULT

When I say cult, I don't mean a cult in the sense of David Koresh compound style cult, I mean more so in mindset and fringe religious practices. My parents believed in the doctrine called "mortification of the flesh", which basically states that people are born evil, and to make them not evil, you have to hit them. See [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discipline\\\_(instrument\\\_of\\\_penance)\](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discipline\_(instrument\_of\_penance))
My parents are extremist fundamentalist Christians. My dad was basically a pastor, and my mom "home schooled" us. When I say home school, I'm being very generous on the school part. They were part of the Quiverful evangelical home school movement and held to the teachings of people like Jonathan Lindvall, Dough Philips, Tedd Tripp, Mike and Debbie Pearl, Stan and Brenna Jones, and Dennis and Barbra Rainey, among others.
Basically, I have solid proof my parents were using these books on me.

TEACHINGS OF TEDD TRIPP

The teachings of Tedd Tripp are certifiably insane. I'll provide several quotes here from his book, "Shepherding a Child's Heart":
* "Spanking is most effective in dealing with young children. They fear being spanked. The spanking gives weight to your words. The spanking sobers and humbles the child. As children get older they get more stoic about spanking. They learn how to deal with it. The intensity of spanking required to make the same impression on a 12-year-old that you make on a 2-year-old would be excessive.”
* “Remove his drawers so that the spanking is not lost in the padding of his pants.... It is best to lay the child across your lap rather than over a bed or a chair. This puts the spanking in the context of your physical relationship. He is not being removed from you to a neutral object for the purpose of being disciplined.”
* “I have witnessed spankings administered through a double layer of diapers to a child who never stopped moving long enough to know he had been spanked. The spanking was ineffective because the parents never made the rod felt.”
* “When your child is old enough to resist your directives, he is old enough to be disciplined. When he is resisting you, he is disobeying. If you fail to respond, those rebellious responses become entrenched. The longer you put off disciplining, the more intractable the disobedience will become.”
* “Rebellion can be something as simple as a small child struggling against a diaper change or stiffening his body when you want him to sit on your lap. The discipline procedure is the same as that which is laid out above. You have no way of knowing how much a child less than a year old can understand, but we do know that understanding comes long before the ability to articulate. Your temptation will be to wait until your children are speaking and able to articulate their rebellion before you deal with it.”
* “When our oldest child was approximately 8 months old, we were confronted with parenting our first mobile child. He crawled everywhere. We had a bookshelf constructed of boards and bricks. Fearing the shelf would fall on him, Margy told him not to pull himself up by the shelf. After moving him away from the shelf, she left the room. As she peeked in on him, she observed him surveying the room. Not seeing her, he headed back toward the forbidden bookshelf. Here was a young child, not yet able to walk or to talk, looking to see if the coast was clear so he could disobey. Obviously, he was old enough to be disciplined.”
* “After you have spanked, take the child up on your lap and hug him, telling him how much you love him...On some occasions I have had to say to our children: ‘Dear, Daddy has spanked you, but you are not sweet enough yet. We are going to have to go back upstairs for another spanking.’”
Tedd tripp said in an interview on desiringgod: “But what is the purpose of it? I think spanking is most effective with younger children. Spanking gets their attention. It gives weight to your words. It humbles them. They want to avoid it. And it becomes very effective, particularly with little children where you can’t really reason with them, and they are not capable of complex reasoning.... So I think that it is indispensable in those early years particularly.”

MIKE AND DEBBIE PEARL:

The book, "To Train Up a Child" is also particularly nasty, and 1994 edition especially so. In the 2015 version, they tried to smooth over some of the more abusive passages because parents were hitting their kids to death and they were using this book.
The book emphasizes the doctrine of the mortification of the flesh, stating:
* “A spanking (whipping, paddling, switching, or belting) is in-dispensable to the removal of guilt in your child. His very conscience (nature) demands punishment.”
* “If God’s love is expressed by the ‘whippings’ He gives, then can we not also love our children enough to chasten them unto holiness?”
* “The very nature of the child makes the rod an indispensable element in child training and discipline....“They go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies” (Psalm 58:3).”
More messed up stuff includes:
* The opening line of this book states, “SWITCH YOUR KIDS”
* “Training does not necessarily require that the trainee be capable of reason; even mice and rats can be trained to respond to stimuli. Careful training can make a dog perfectly obedient. If a seeing-eye dog can be trained to reliably lead a blind man through the obstacles of a city street, shouldn’t a parent expect more out of an intelligent child? A dog can be trained not to touch a tasty morsel laid in front of him. Can’t a child be trained not to touch?”
* “A dog can be trained to come, stay, sit, be quiet or fetch upon command. You may not have trained your dog that well, yet every day someone accomplishes it on the dumbest mutts. Even a clumsy teenager can be trained to be an effective trainer in a dog obedience school. If you wait until your dog is displaying unacceptable behavior before you rebuke (or kick) him, you will have a foot-shy mutt who is always sulking around seeing what he can get away with before being screamed at.”
* “Where there is an absence of training, you can no more rebuke and whip a child into acceptable behavior than you can the family dog. No amount of discipline can make up for lack of training.”
* “Proper training always works on every child. To neglect training is to create miserable circumstances for yourself and your child. Out of innocent ignorance many of you have bypassed the training and expected the discipline alone to effect proper behavior.”
* “There is much satisfaction in training up a child. It is easy and challenging. When my children were able to crawl (in the case of one, roll) around the room, I set up training sessions. Try it yourself. Place an appealing object where they can reach it, maybe in a ‘No- no’ corner or on an apple juice table (That’s where the coffee table once sat). When they spy it and make a dive for it, in a calm voice say, "No, don’t touch it." They will already be familiar with the ‘No,’ so they will pause, look at you in wonder and then turn around and grab it. Switch their hand once and simultaneously say, ‘No.’”
* “Remember, you are not disciplining, you are training. One spat with a little switch is enough. They will again pull back their hand and consider the relationship between the object, their desire, the command and the little reinforcing pain. It may take several times, but if you are consistent, they will learn to consistently obey, even in your absence.”
* “As the mother, holding her child, leans over the crib and begins the swing downward, the infant stiffens, takes a deep breath and bellows. The battle for control has begun in earnest. Someone is going to be conditioned. Either the tender-hearted mother will cave-in to this self-centered demand (thus training the child to get his way by crying) or the infant is allowed to cry (learning that crying is counterproductive).”
Further evidence of the abusive nature of Mike & Debbie Pearl’s teachings is found in a video clip of Mike Pearl speaking at a seminar, demonstrating with a child doll, where he stated, “I'm gonna get this rod if he screams too hard with the first five \[and\] gets hysterical... wait... you know a little psychological terror sometimes more effective than the pain.”
See [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wt0QOKbEj7A\](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wt0QOKbEj7A) for a solid video by the channel Fundie Fridays on the Pearls.
Furthermore, Mike Pearl has explicitly justified domestic violence. In the book, “Created to be His Help Meet” by Debbie Pearl, described on the cover page as a guide to “Discover how God can make your marriage glorious”, Mike Pearl writes a section explicitly advocates for women to endure domestic violence:
* “Has your husband reviled you and threatened you? You are exhorted to respond as Jesus did. When he was reviled and threatened, he suffered by committing himself to a higher judge who is righteous. You must commit yourself to the one who placed you under your husband’s command."
* “Your husband will answer to God, and you must answer to God for how you respond to your husband, even when he causes you to suffer. Just as we are to obey government in every ordinance, and servants are to obey their masters, even the ones who are abusive and surly, ‘likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands’...”
* “You can freely call your husband ‘lord’ when you know that you are addressing the one who put him in charge and asked you to suffer at your husband’s hands just as our Lord suffered at the hands of unjust authorities...”
* “When you endure evil and railing without returning it, you receive a blessing, not just as a martyr, but as one who worships God.”
The Seattle times actually wrote about the Pearls and their book: [https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/did-hanas-parents-train-her-to-death/\](https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/did-hanas-parents-train-her-to-death/)
* “‘It’s truly an evil book,’ said Michael Ramsey, the district attorney for Butte County, Calif.Ramsey successfully prosecuted Kevin and Elizabeth Schatz for hitting their daughter Lydia to death in Paradise, Calif., in 2006 with a plastic plumbing-supply tube — the kind the Pearls mention in an article on their website called ‘In Defense of Biblical Chastisement.’”
* “In Washington state, the death of Hana Williams marked the third time the Pearls’ names and their book have surfaced after the death of a child....”
* “Pearl encourages parents to think of the switch as a ‘magic wand’ and says teaching a child to obey is like training an animal: ‘A dog can be trained not to touch a tasty morsel laid in front of him. Can’t a child be trained not to touch?’”

JAMES DOBSON & FOCUS ON THE FAMILY

James Dobson is the founder of the religious organization and lobbying group Focus on the Family.
Here's a video of Dobson with Ronald Reagan in the Oval Office of the White House: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hGZvawO1V8
The first chapter of his book, the New Strong Willed Child, describes Dobson beating his dog:
“He was a stubborn, twelve-pound dachshund named Sigmund Freud (Siggie), who honestly believed that he owned the place.... On the night of our great battle, I told Sigmund to leave his warm seat and go to bed. Instead, he flattened his ears and slowly turned his head toward me.... That was Siggie’s way of saying, “Get lost!”
I had seen this defiant mood before and knew that I had to deal with it. The only way to make Siggie obey was to threaten him with destruction. Nothing else worked. I turned and went to my closet and got a small belt to help me “reason” with ’ol Sig. My wife, who was watching this drama unfold, told me that as soon as I left the room, Siggie jumped from his perch and looked down the hall to see where I had gone. Then he got behind her and growled....
When I returned, I held up the belt and again told the angry dog to get into his bed. He stood his ground so I gave him a firm swat across the rear end, and he tried to bite the belt. I popped him again and he tried to bite me. What developed next is impossible to describe.
That tiny dog and I had the most vicious fight ever staged between man and beast. I fought him up one wall and down the other, with both of us scratching and clawing and growling. I am still embarrassed by the memory of the entire scene. Inch by inch I moved him toward the family room and his bed...
This is not a book about the discipline of dogs. But there is an important aspect of my story that is highly relevant to the world of children. Just as surely as a dog will occasionally challenge the authority of his leaders, a child is inclined to do the same thing, only more so.”

JONATHAN LINDVALL & BOLD CHRISTIAN PARENTING

My parents would play tapes of Jonathan Lindvall when we went on road trips. He advocated for a radical evangelical homeschool lifestyle, social isolation of children from other “worldly” children, having as many children as possible regardless of financial means, explicitly denounced the socialization of children, and stated that children’s education should focus primarily on the Bible.
I couldn't find the actual tapes they played but I found his old website: [https://web.archive.org/web/20120829030118/http://boldchristianliving.com/\](https://web.archive.org/web/20120829030118/http://boldchristianliving.com/)
Some outstanding bits include:
* “We all want our children to have the skills and disciplines to provide for their familiessome day. But job preparation is similarly not worthy as a primary goal of homeschooling. Jesus explicitly warned us not to be concerned with how our food and clothing are supplied (Matt. 6:19-34). This, in fact, is the context in which he called us to ‘seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness.’”
* “There are many desirable, God-pleasing results likely to come from our obedience to God in choosing to personally disciple our children. But no matter how good they are, if they are the focus, rather than our aim being to bring Jesus pleasure, they can become idols for us. Many homeschoolers have become enamored with the vision of the long-term societal (political/economic) impact our practices can have. May the Lord bring all this about, but may our hearts be set on Him more than on the impact we can have.”
* “Another objection virtually every homeschooler in western society has been confronted by is the ‘socialization’ question. In our society is assumed to be essential for children to spend time with peers to be properly adjusted. Yet the preponderance of scripture cautions from the opposite perspective. Proverbs 12:26 warns, ‘The righteous should choose his friends carefully, For the way of the wicked leads them astray.’ Proverbs 13:20 is even more pointed, saying, ‘He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed.’ Paul was apparently quoting an accepted proverb at the time when he wrote, ‘Do not be deceived: ‘Evil company corrupts good habits’’ (1 Cor. 15:33).”
* “No doubt the Lord wants our children to learn to benefit from edifying fellowship, just as He wants this for us. However, positive social skills are generally not learned from children. God intends for fathers (not peers) to shape their children’s values and tendencies ‘in the training and admonition of the Lord’ (Eph. 6:4). This requires protecting our children from peer domination, and instead structuring our family lifestyles to facilitate intense, intimate relationship between our children and ourselves.”
* “Sadly, perhaps as a result of the world’s challenges regarding ‘socialization,’ many homeschoolers feel pressure to provide settings where their children can spend large amounts of time with peers. Thus, over the years we have seen homeschool support groups move from supporting the parents to supporting the children with extra-familial activities like sports teams, group music experiences, and cooperative classes. There are probably times when it is appropriate to expose our families to teaching situations where the parents are not necessarily doing all the teaching, but it is a significant danger to fall into the habit of exposing our children to the addictive peer group influences.”
• “Virtually every homeschool parent will easily identify the most frequently asked question about their homeschooling as, ‘What about socialization?’ When people ask this question, what are they wondering about? Are they worried that our children will not be capable of displaying lifelong servanthood for the glory of God? Generally not. They are shocked that we are not intimidated at the thought of our children being different from everyone else.”
• “Socialism is the attempt to equalize everyone--make everyone alike. But God didn't make us alike. He made each of us, including our children, to be unique. And we are not to minimize, but maximize our distinctives for the glory of God. We are not to try to mask our uniqueness beneath a facade of timid conformity. We are to SHINE! Jesus said (Mat 5:16), ‘Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.’”

STAN AND BRENNA JONES

First of all, here’s a photo of the author: [https://www.christiansexed.com/about-the-authors/\](https://www.christiansexed.com/about-the-authors/)
Their book, “What’s the Big Deal: Why God cares about sex” identifies as a christian sex education book for children as young as age 8. The cover of the book states, “Ages 8-12”.
The book states in the introduction, “We believe that God means for Christian parents to be their children’s primary sex educators. First messages are the most powerful-why wait until your child hears distorted views and then try to correct the misunderstanding? Sexuality is a beautiful gift-why not present it to your child the way God intended?”.
This book contains passages explicitly describing:
* How pleasurable sex is;
* The location and pleasurability of the clitoris;
* The sensitivity of the penis to pleasure
* What porn is and where it's found
* What rape porn is
* What sex slavery is
* Explicit descriptions of orgasms, including describing them as a sudden burst of pleasure
My dad read me this book when I was 8, 3rd grade.
TEDD TRIPP & BDSM P0RN SITES
What really got me thinking about this was the fact that in my state, the statute of limitations to sue in civil court for assault and battery was up, however the statute of limitations on sexual abuse was not.
So obviously all of this stuff is pretty messed up. But what takes it to the next level of messed up and makes what they did a sex crime (I'm hoping the DA sees it the same way), is when you really look at what Tedd Tripp advocates parents do to their children:
“Remove his drawers so that the spanking is not lost in the padding of his pants.... It is best to lay the child across your lap rather than over a bed or a chair. This puts the spanking in the context of your physical relationship. He is not being removed from you to a neutral object for the purpose of being disciplined.”
Which basically means:
* Take off the child's clothes
* Place them on your lap, fully or partially naked
* Strike them with what could legally be classified as a deadly weapon
So I started thinking about how spanking is a BDSM kink and fetish. Which was weird to think about in the context of what your parents did to you.
Then I thought, well damn there are tons of BDSM p0rn sites, there have to be some with what happened to me on there. It turns out that there are TONS of videos of exactly this on sites such as p0rnhub and heavy fetish .com.
For example:
* “Hard belt spanking for cheating” (porn hub)
* “Spanked to Tears with the Bathbrush - Real Tears for Letting Him Down” (porn hub)
* “Hard paddle spanking in the principal's office” (porn hub)
* “SPANK CHINA - Hua’s first spanking session”, (heavy fetish)
* "Spanking Jane" (heavy fetish)
I tried putting the links in but reddit flagged my post so if you’re really curious just search by title and website
These videos appear on the same site as stuff like real hardcore BDSM stuff like electrocution torture and people in cages, tied in the air and having their genitals electrocuted. Basically real torture like in this video: "WIRED PUSSY - Sandra Romain andSara Scott" (heavy fetish)
And then you realize, "oh, if they filmed what they did, it would be child p0rn_".
18 U.S. Code § 2256:
  1. ‘child porn0graphy’ means any visual depiction, including any photograph, film, video, picture, or computer or computer-generated image or picture, whether made or produced by electronic, mechanical, or other means, of sexually explicit conduct, where- the production of such visual depiction involves the use of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct; such visual depiction is a digital image, computer image, or computer-generated image that is, or is indistinguishable from, that of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct; or such visual depiction has been created, adapted, or modified to appear that an identifiable minor is engaging in sexually explicit conduct.”
  2. sexually explicit conduct” means actual or simulated—
  3. sexual intercourse, including genital-genital, oral-genital, anal-genital, or oral-anal, whether between persons of the same or opposite sex;
  4. bestiality;
  5. masturbation;
  6. sadistic or masochistic abuse; or
  7. lascivious exhibition of the anus, genitals, or pubic area of any person;

TORTURE

The next shoe to drop was when I read the legal definitions of torture.
Torture is defined as “the infliction of intense pain (as from burning, crushing, or wounding) to punish, coerce, or afford sadistic pleasure”. -Merriam Webster
The U.N. Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment says:
“For the purposes of this Convention, the term ‘torture’ means any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity.”
The U.S. Federal torture 18 U.S. Code § 2340 says,
"'torture' means an act committed by a person acting under the color of law specifically intended to inflict severe physical or mental pain or suffering (other than pain or suffering incidental to lawful sanctions) upon another person within his custody or physical control"
The study “Child Torture as a Form of Child Abuse” from University of Wisconsin School ofMedicine and appearing in the Journal of Child & Adolescent Trauma states:
  1. "Child torture is defined medically as...At least two physical assaults, occurring over at least two incidents or a single extended incident, which would cause prolonged physical pain, emotional distress, bodily injury, or death... And...
  2. At least two elements of psychological abuse such as isolation, intimidation, emotional/psychological maltreatment, terrorizing, spurning, or deprivation...
  3. Inflicted by the child’s caretaker(s)”
It also says:
* “Stover and Nightingale (1985) state: The purpose of torture is to break the will of thevictim and ultimately to break his or her humanity...through infliction of severe or acute physical pain and mental suffering...and requires that the torturer exert physical control over his or her victim. (p. 4–5)”
* “Campbell (2007) adds: ‘The act of torture is carried out for the purpose of physically and psychologically ‘breaking’ an individual’ (p. 633).’”
* “PTSD is the most commonly diagnosed psychological disorder among adult torture victims (Allodi and Cowgill 1982; Herman 1992). In addition to torture, polyvictimization has been recognized to be associated with worse mental health outcomes in child abuse victims (Finkelhor et al. 2011). By definition, all of \[the study participants\] have suffered polyvictimization as defined by Finkelhor.”

GRANDFATHER MANDATORY REPORTER

Also, in this fucked up land of fucking crazy shit, I realized that my grandfather, who we saw all the time, was a mandatory reporter THIS WHOLE TIME. He also had a masters in Psychology, so that's extra WTF.

DAD MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELOR

Another wild thing is that my dad just got his masters in counseling (christian counseling ofc) and is now working as a mental health care provider.

CONCLUSION

I was just diagnosed with Chronic PTSD a few weeks ago and have been out of work on treatment ever since.
But basically none of this feels real to me. I find it interesting in a sort of detached way that every time I detail what my childhood was like, they're shocked and appalled. I could see the female detective's eyes tearing up a bit. But I suppose it shouldn't be so surprising. After all, they put my sibling in the psych hospital 3x before the age of 18.
Please let me know what you all think. One of the silver linings on all this is because of my time in the military, I can get a free PTSD service dog which I'm excited for.
The crazy thing is that one of the counselors in the PTSD program is a former cop and sex crimes investigator and even he was shocked by how bad this whole thing is. So that's my life right now. :)
TLDR: Parents in child abuse cult; did S&M acts on us as kids; police investigating.
