Hi all!
Thought I’d share my handwriting! I get compliments on it every once in a while, which i take with high praise considering I’m left handed and we lefties are known for messier penmanship. Hope you enjoy :)
The first 2 pictures were taken today from my notebook for my medication class I took. It was written back in February. When I’m in the groove and know I have to conserve space for more notes I naturally write smaller. The last picture was from note taken last week for my state exam, and I feel like the difference is pretty clear!

2024.04.28 22:10 Xepato Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a Fun Game, but it is not a Good Game

I think that DD2 features very fun party-based action adventure gameplay, but a lot of features and systems simply are not well thought out. Here’s some of my list of things I found lacking and how I’d improve them. I’m going to try to keep it short because there’s a lot to go through.

Combat and skill progression tends to lean towards being a power fantasy. This is fun until it gets repetitive, kind of like using cheat codes. Now I’m not asking for a souls-like, I just think that there should be universal defensive options (ie. Each vocation gets their own kind of block/dodge). Most enemies right now either chain stagger you to death or they attack too slowly to actually threaten you.
Skill progression sometimes does not make sense. For example, my favorite class to learn (not to play): Mystic Spearhand. The clear idea behind this class is to be able to nonstop attack while mixing in defensive skills to keep up the assault. However, you do not get a defensive skill until level 3. Your default skill, your time-slow bolt, is not actually a defensive ability, it’s an offensive ability.
Some skills allow you to be stronger at the cost of interacting with the game less, making the game less fun. Thief’s Maister skill (auto dodge) is one example, and Spearhand’s shield (permanent invincibility) is another. I can tell you right now that even if enemies one shot you, it wouldn’t matter so long as these skills exist in their current state. I suppose the player solution is simply “don’t use the skill,” but that kinda ruins the sense of progression via exploration, doesn’t it?
Uncapped leveling hurts not just the combat, but the pawn system. At high levels your equipment really does not change how easy the game is by much. It also makes the social aspect of the pawn system worse by limiting the pawns you see to recruit by default, and by making it not really justifiable for low level players to recruit high level pawns.
Stat-based progression in equipment hurts the pawn system, since it incentives people using good weapons/armor on their pawns, leading to most pawns looking the same. I don’t mind some level of stat progression, but I think there should be far more sidegrades as opposed to straight upgrades. More weapons and armors would help.
SorcereMage sucks to play, not because of their effects, but because casting feels awful. Casting spells is quite frankly like watching paint dry, except you do get a cool result in the end. Quickcast should be available level 1 and should feature a minigame instead of “you get to wait less.” At the very least, Mage is concerned about keeping the party alive, but this uninteractiveness hurts Sorcerer a lot more because they are more selfish.
The idea to beating certain enemies (ie. Slime) being “you either have the right skill or you don’t” punishes the player by taking fun away: the player literally stands there doing nothing and they pray that their party does something. I think that if a player does not have the right skill, they should be forced to interact with more skill checks, making the combat more dangerous but still doable, as opposed to “well you can’t do anything except watch.”
Escort quests are awful since NPCs do not run as quickly as your party for some reason, and if the idea of escort is “oh you have to walk slowly to make sure your target isn’t getting hurt!” then that’s frankly uninteractive gameplay and is completely unfun. It also forces you to not explore much if you want to succeed, which hurts the sense of the open world.
I don’t mind if the story is mid, but plot points are often not explained and important characters fall off the face of the planet as soon as you finish their quests relating to the Arisen. We are supposed to get invested in this political plot to expose the fake Sovran only for the game to say “well I don’t care about how invested you are, you will never hear what happens next, just go to Battahl.” Story that happens in the background for the rest of the game is not story, it’s just lore-in-action. Souls-like storytelling also just does not fit this game.

Now on a lighter note, I think that having a class you can fall asleep playing as while winning anyways is funny. I have played both Mystic Spearhand and Trickster half asleep with both eyes fully closed during entire fights. Although, while Spearhand is simply overpowered, Trickster’s gameplay consists of spamming AOE incense and checking to see if your clone is alive; like so, so many things in the game, Trickster would benefit from more interactivity.
This concludes my ramble. There’s more to say but basically, I think it’s unfair to compare the flaws in this game to stuff like Elden Ring, because the core gameplay of Elden Ring is still fully functional, well thought out, and importantly, it flows well. DD2 simply suffers from many non-negligible flaws impacting its core game design.

2024.04.18 23:34 Helstiir What could've been (A Discussion involving what we would've wanted, and possible spoilers ahead)

So I want to start by saying that I am making this post so that I, along with everyone on the forum who is unsatisfied with the game's current state, can list what they would've wanted from the game. This isn't some post to get people to hate the game or anything, but instead, it is supposed to be a sort of idea pool. I encourage everyone to post what they believe would add to the overall experience and also to list what they believe were some shortcomings of the game.

Now, with that out of the way, we can begin

So the first thing that I believe the game needs is a change to how the beloved system works. I don't mean a removal of the system or anything, but instead to add one extra step to the system so that players don't get the wrong person, and that's gifting them something like the eternal bond, or maybe a whole new item that acts as the key to their heart, which would be useless on an npc with low affinity, but used on someone you have a high enough affinity with, would allow them to become your beloved. This would ensure that people like me can assist those they call their friends along with missions but not risk them falling in love with you (I'm looking at you Glyndwr). This was one issue I had with both the original game and the sequel, and that's the fact I couldn't help people without them falling in love with me, which made me constantly reluctant to help anyone.
The second thing I believe the game needs is a change back to the classic armor system. Contrary to what Itsuno wished, the simplification of the system caused less variety with Pawns, and the simplest (But admittedly, not the easiest) solution would be to go back to the previous armor system from the first game. Next to the whole Pawn system, this was my favorite thing from the original game, which was just how much customizability you had with your armor, and I wish they brought it back with the sequel, so much so that I was saddened when I heard of its removal.
Third and finally, the thing I believe would benefit the game happens to affect the story. So the idea is that instead of how the game's story went, the dragon doesn't offer us the throne but instead offers to take our beloved in exchange for peace during our reign or fight at the end of the world. Should we choose the latter, the dragon would say something along the lines of "Gather thy forces, Arisen. The time has yet to come, and thou must be ready. I shall be waiting for thee at the end of the world" before flying off with your beloved in tow, leaving you no choice but to return to Vernworth to take your role as the rightful Sovran. This is where we get something similar to Dragon Age Inquisition, where we have moments where we have to sit on the throne and pass judgment on certain npcs such as the false Sovran, Disa, etc. Depending on your verdicts, it could permanently affect how certain npcs look at you, maybe even make them your enemy for the rest of the game. This way you can rightfully punish the people responsible for trying to ruin your life instead of letting them go scot-free, and would give some further player agency to the game. Additionally, like Dragon Age Inquisition, certain quests, Main quests included, require you to interact with your Advisors so that they can gather information. The downside is that this takes time, but it allows you to do sidequests in the meantime, or to pass judgment on npcs.

2024.04.16 09:21 KillerFenny497 I finally platinumed DD2. Here's my thoughts about it and what I wish the game would've been like. (LONG TEXT)

As the title suggests, this is a list of thoughts and things I wish DD2 would have included at release, as well as things I wish by some miracle get added on an expansion in the style of Cyberpunk 2077's Phantom Liberty. I really hope this game gets the same treatment.
So strap in, cause this is gonna be TOO long a rant and discourse. I'm incredibly passionate about this game and about what could've been.
1.- STORY. Of course, I think the story is pretty lacking and disappointing, I honestly believe there's the skeleton of a GREAT story here, but nothing the game ever does with it goes anywhere, it honestly feels like like an afterthought. And as far as afterthoughts go, let's talk about the first thing taken for granted.

DD2's Dragon was very disappointing to me. Much like Nemesis in the RE3 Remake, the dragon here holds no sense of looming threat, not a single moment in the game I was reminded of the ferocity and dreadedness not the dragon, it has no personality, it has no tangible presence in the world other than quite literally being the vehicle that both starts and ends the story or the cycle. It does not even have a name.

I think this would've been way better if we had gotten instances of the dragon taunting you, challenging you and hell even tricking you by making you think your beloved has already been kidnapped. All of which would fill a little bit more the fuel for our journey, the one reason we do it, and serves as a powerful reminded of the dragon's purpose which is selecting an individual to grow and become strong just to be felled by the Arisen he chooses. (Now I see why there's so many former failed arisen) It also would've been great to see more of it's devastating effect on the region. I would've loved to see towns burning, and also bastions being attacked by it in the distance, literally in the same way we see our pawn using the Gigantus to fight kn the distance.

The depth of the characters is generally a problem, I feel like this story would've worked amazingly had it also focused more on each one and their motivations within the main set of quests, often moments fall short because the conversations, voice acting, or the general feel of the ingame scenes is very bland and the characters speech and mocap has the same bland feeling, I expected more lively mechanics of the NPCs specially for what was marketed as a very character centric story focusing on political intrigue and the motivations of the powers at play in the midst of chaos. Literally even the final fight with the sellsword was both ridiculously easy and also incredibly anti climactic. (Will speak more about these types of conflicts and fights later on) And generally I just think outside of a few, the story does nothing interesting with the conflicts it poses, the previous war between Battahl and Vermund, the differences in traditions, upbringings, and just generally I wish it would've been more organically noticeable all of these world building aspects instead of being told. Ultimately all the entire map felt like exploring the same nation, there was no weight to the lambent flame or Nadinia, literally one of the cover characters and also one of the center points for a multinational conflict.

ROMANCES AND FRIENDSHIPS

I think the romance and overall the relationships in this game are so underwhelming. Outside of their quest and immediate needs, I feel almost no motivators for the personal journey of any of the characters, except for Wilhelmina, her personal story was genuinely cool and just wish it had been explored more.
But all it comes down to is just one mission in which most characters just run their own personal journey and then nothing, that's all you'll get of that character. That's all the activity you'll have with the character. No special interactions, no chance of seeing them again recreatively because they just go back into their NPC state with 3 lines of text. At least they should've had a couple of trees of dialogue so that we can feel like we can talk to our beloved/friend to some degree after completing their missions, idk. Invite them to the tavern to dance or drink, go out camping or hunting, archery in the case of some or friendly duels, all we get is escort missions and the worst kind of them, not a single one is good and the worst is you don't even get a single new line of dialogue. It's all put on weird banners that look like mission logs or documents and that's also really annoying. Like if you're gonna be that cheap about interactions with the characters, at least record a couple new lines.
Here we come to what I think would've made this game miles better too.
Doireann. Glyndwr. Menella. Lennart. Nadinia. Sigurd. Beren. Brant. Lamond. Sara. SHOULD HAVE ALL BEEN ROMANCEABLE DEPENDING ON YOUR GENDER. Some are even on the website for DD2 listed as main characters for the game, cool art and everything.
All of these characters would've been able to have incredibly rich and compelling stories, romances and also very varied activities depending on the character and culture they're from.
I really would've loved taking Menella out to the starry skies of Battahl to camp or to practice. Or a visit to the hot springs with special interactions at that town. Idk. Or Doireann to a Tavern in the city and be able to have a cutscenes and dialogue about her wanting to discover the world outside the arbor.
Not only as romances or beloved. But simply as friends and companions, I want to feel at the end of my journey as an arisen as if I truly touched the hearts of the people on my journey and had rivalries or conflicts, genuinely have a system in which not only the pawns but the world outside of the exploration is the protsgonist. Different views, different cultures, different ideals. Like ending up having a rivalry with Beren because I played his missions based on my beliefs (yet having a way to get his maister technique too) or maybe even hated by Brant because I am not interested in politics or maybe didn't help his soldiers with something. Or even have a genuine best friend in Gwyndr after saving his sister and getting the chance to bring him along for support or using his knowledge of the forest to find something new.
These are all just many examples of little things that if added, would've made the experience with the world much better instead of it feeling barren and like a bunch of NPCs with predetermined schedules. At least make some unique and not only that but memorable with a romance system akin to how Cyberpunk 2077 now let's you invite romances to your home and have more interactions.

THE WORLD.

In a world as huge as they marketed, I expected more than just boring hallways, exploration is fun at first, yes. Until you realize most of the map is covered by unending mountainous terrain, uneven lands, and lots of roadblocks that very un organically make you take the longest path, or sometimes take way longer climbing up or down to take a "shortcut" all because you wanted to avoid the same repetitive encounter of 5 siblings and 3 annoying harpies that either put you to sleep or grapple a pawn and make you lose it until you can find a stone. I want to feel like I can genuinely take shortcuts with the risk of it being more dangerous, but also finding it rewarding. I want to see open fields that I can see across and genuinely decide which way to go and how to go about it. And most of all, I would've loved to see even the smallest of deserts on Battahli territory.
Don't get me wrong, I really like the exploration, but my shift more and more focused towards farming and getting ferry stones as fast as possible to spare myself the repetition that comes with the unending waves of foes that constantly stagger you, they're not hard to fight, not by a landslide, they're just incredibly annoying and as most classes hard to hit or deal with when you're getting overrun and bounced around/stunlocked.
I wanted more open fields, arenas literally designed to fight mighty creatures and see unusual sights. Like a mix of Elden Ring and Shadow Of The Colossus. I want to go down a field and see a Griffin dice down on an Ogre, I want to enter the courtyard of a bastion or fort and see 2 or 3 chained Cyclops rush me after breaking their binds. I want to see a bigger variety of enemies, like Hydras, Cockatrices, hell even Giant Wolves bigger than a Garm. And generally I would appreciate the 1 on 1 treatment for a lot of the beasts more often. Also, sure, give me small enemies to fight, let them ambush me and gather in places that can genuinely feel like their territory, but don't make it so they stagger the fuck out me, sure, let them shred my health if I slip up, but man is it annoying to fight wolves and goblins without being a Magick Archer.
It would also benefit from more impactful human enemies other than just regular bandits, give me something like idk. A knight that is obsessed with felling the dragon himself and when he finds the Arisen he wants to kill him to prove himself. Or a spearhand that has been contracted to kill you. Idk. Something interesting that can be a cool fight in which mechanics reign instead of seeing how fast you can shred that health bar while the enemy does whatever (We don't know cause it's dead before we can even learn the pattern of attacks, cough cough, that one guy you fight at the end of the game who wanted a deal and just got shat on for no reason when it could've been a great fight.)
Regardless of that, I think the world is beautiful looking, just not interesting enough a lof ot the times. Some areas are incredibly nice like the Sphinx areas and the journey to them. But I want to see more towns, villages, show me wandering caravans of merchants on Battahl and Vermund, show me tribes of Battahli people living secluded on a tall cliff away from everywhere. And the secret arbor, expand on it, other than some fucking wooden bridges allowing access to this place, I see almost no influence of the Elven Kingdom within the forest, I get it they're hidden but the secret arbor is so small and so miniscule, I genuinely expected a secret kingdom of wonders and a completely new race with new mechanics and traditions, but all we get is just gibberish you can end up reading super easily so it's all the same, classic estereotypical elf shit, and a tree. I wish there was more, a secret valley full of elven houses, places to see, a genuine culture to explore and not just some nature people living on what looks like one simple palace with literally no thought on its design, utility or activities of the elves. All of it is also just brushed off as just another 3 second mention.
I would also love to see just more quality of life and roleplay mechanics within towns and while out camping, the opportunity to have a bigger camp, customize it, or cook other meals than just meat, we have plenty of ingredients we can gather and maybe turn into other meals.
I would really like to see more customization in regards to dwellings, and hell I would even love if at the end of the game after becoming the Sovran without going to the unmoored world you were suddenly launched into a management mini game and were able to customize the castle, but all of this is just wishes and dreams ey?

WARFARER and COMBAT

Combat in this game is incredibly good, that's a given. Mechanically dense and very responsive however at the same time, ridiculously easy and you progress your journey. Broken abilities which J don't think should be cut off but instead we should get harder bosses and beasts with mechanics that serve to mitigate the effects of spamming abilities such as Skull Splitter, so that combat feels more rewarding when you do get the chance of landing one of those and seeing a chunk of health taken off the enemy, just to be launched onto another struggle to stay your ground as you fight. And the thing is, combat doesn't have enough consequences for slipping up, it's either you get overrun and lose total control of your character. Or you have a ridiculous amount of control over the battlefield that it ends up once again being how fast you can deplete a health bar instead of strategizing and creating organic out of the box solutions, which does happen but honestly, why would you when you can just skull Splitter everything away or Martyr's Bolt a dragon before it even noticed you. (Though that one is fair since you get a permanent debuff to max health until you rest)
This lack of consequences brings me to Warfarer, which is my main class, and one I am conflicted about because I really like the concept and how it currently works but also find it limiting.
If we're already devastating our opponents, and this class gives us less stats. Why can't we get at least one more ability tree? Or have even just 1 or 2 abilities exclusive to the weapon each time we do rearmament? We also lose access to the maister techniques we've spent the entire game getting, and for what? I don't feel like I'm breaking the limits of gameplay and doing combos that devastate opponents. All I'm getting is the ability to have a ranged weapon along with my melee weapon of choice and some gimmick along with it be it the enemy freeze from spearhand or the magick of either Mage or Wizard, and yet that is still super mild, it's really run down and I can neither enjoy Warfarer to what I know it's full potential could be nor a regular class to use the maister skills, cause then I'm either losing the chance to use a ranged weapon as a utility, or a staff to do levitate for exploration, or maybe I just want to lodge a spear into a Cyclops eye and then use Skull Splitter to descend. But don't want that ease of life to also limit the amount of baddass shit I can in combat and I think that limiting aspect is in part due to how easy it is to kill everything. I'd just make enemies tougher, tankier or whatever we need to do so we can have a compelling combat that also allows for boundless creativity. Literally just take from DMC5 which to me is the best hack and slash game ever made and the combat is so fun and it's so easy to get options there.

PAWNS.

PAWNS SHOULD BE ROMANCEABLE.
I feel like it is a huge lost opportunity to not allow the player to romance the character with which they spend the entirety of their journey with.
There literally is already a way to reach max affinity with a pawn, and I think the game could've done so much in regards to fitting the narrative (Nearly unexisting) around this possibility. Could easily count it as one of the parts of breaking the cycle, could easily up the stakes and make the player feel like everything is at risk by taking away their pawn as the beloved chosen by the dragon, literally the one person we've spent our journey with and have come to care about more than any other chatacter in the game. Cause I know I'd let any of the characters previously mention die if it means I get to keep my pawn. Could even have it be a secret step by step thing, like choosing your pawn the most beloved person at the Sphinx trials. Which 1. Makes you go out of your way to play that part of the game which is very optional if you want to have a chance at romancing your pawn. And 2. Ties into the story and journey of the Arisen so it ends up being way more memorable than any other relationship. Which it already is for most players. And the fact that at the endgame your pawn acta as if they've become human, saying we've gifted them a will.
If you're already throwing everything out the window regarding previous lore including the Seneschal and suddenly now there being a greater dragon than the dragon that steals your heart, if we're already on the path to breaking the cycle completely and ridding our world of these rules. Why not make it possible?
Also honorable mention tk the last 2 boss fights being literally 1. A joke to beat if you expose the dragon's heart. And 2. Literally a cutscene, which would've affected nothing if we had gotten a 1 on 1 fight with a Seneschal that refuses to see this cycle end, in the style of a Souls game and the stakes being your pawn and of course your freedom. To then transform or become the great dragon like it is suggested on the ending and then giving us the stupid cutscene they call final boss just to end the game.
Also, it's pretty apparent they either didn't have time or resources to even fucking record some voice lines on the credits, which is mildly annoying to me when all im hearing is cheering and sounds from the world and I see people speak but nothing comes out. It's bothersome and even moreso thinking they were so cheap or lazy to not add voice lines there.
All in all, I remember playing the demo of the first dragon's dogma for hours on end when I was a kid whose family was too broke to buy the game when it first came out, trying to find ways to go out of bounds thinking I could get to the full game. And when I finally was able to get DDDA. It was a game I completely fell for. And to this day, I think that love pours into DD2 as well. There's definitely something here but there's also a lot of missing parts and that's just sad. The passion I gold for this franchise is just so big, I desperately wish they overhaul the game. But knowing Capcom. This is what we have and it ain't changing, I mean it already earned more than the first, so it must be a good sequel in their numbers right? I will always love the first game, and this game too despite all of the things it lacks in. Simply for the heart that I still can see was put into making it. But also just the unique feel it has as an RPG. I think this can be taken as a lesson but also as a reminder of what could've been one of the greatest RPGs we would've gotten.
