2024.05.14 15:21 5YearsOnEastCoast Weird-ass ports of games you have played

It is common to see games being ported to other systems and they generally tend to be similar to the one on the original platform. Sometimes there would be some differencesso it could run on that system or has some exclusive content for it, something that wasn't present on original platform. And then there are ports of games that are completely different than the original but the title name. And some of this tend to be pretty strange.
One of these weird-ass ports that I have played is GBA version of Sims 2. This game is completely different from it's PC counterpart. It is an action-adventure game where you control only one sim and interact with people in town and you could also play mini games there like playing cards or driving a tractor. It does have sims elements there like the needs bar and decorating your house, but on the whole game is so damn different.
Did you play any other of these strange ports?

2024.05.14 15:20 RFelixFinch Product Demos and Universal Translators

TL;DR: Product Demos are usually far more impressive than actual application and LANGUAGE IS HARD.
This will come off cynical, because when it comes to AI I am HEAVILY cynical, but I figure Burnie and Ashley, as two people who have been involved with gaming and tech as long as they have, would not be so quick to gush on Product Demos. We have seen time and time again that the product promised is rarely the product delivered and that when one can control the circumstances under which a technology is demonstrated it is far easier to get it to function than when you hand it to an ignorant, malicious, or lesser-skilled end-user.
Now, on the subject of Universal Translators, the reason it doesn't exist is simple. Linguistics consists of:
Computers and programs are pretty decent at the first two parts within a general prescriptive sense, but the problem is once you can start altering the structure of a sentence, using euphemisms and innuendo, or just completely change the tone of what is said through stress and emphasis it gets difficult to program AI to expect and adapt to that.
The big example I'll give is from a few years back, the former president was giving translators a headache because of you took the literal words he said and put them on paper it is an incoherent mess, much of the communication comes from implication and the ability to connect references to other events. When you translate literally it just looks like word salad.
That's an extreme example, but one I'll take a small step forward with is that regional variation exists that doesn't always directly translate even if both are technically speaking the same "language".
If you want to understand Semantics/Pragmatics, think of memes. Memes have a literal meaning and a contextual meaning, and it is easy to see how an unfamiliarity with a meme format would make it difficult to translate a usage.

2024.05.14 15:18 KeyTea218 Implementing #SimplifiedTechnicalEnglish in #TESOL?

In today's globalized world, English proficiency is increasingly essential for communication in various fields, including technology, aviation, and engineering. However, for non-native speakers, understanding complex technical documents can be daunting. This is where Simplified Technical English (STE) comes into play. Originally developed by the aerospace industry to ensure clarity and consistency in technical documentation, STE principles can be effectively applied in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) contexts.
šŸ“£ Clarity and Simplicity: STE emphasizes the use of clear, concise language and a limited vocabulary. In TESOL, instructors can adopt similar principles by using straightforward explanations, avoiding jargon, and selecting vocabulary that is relevant to learners' needs and interests.
āœ… Standardization: STE provides a set of writing rules and a controlled vocabulary to maintain consistency and facilitate comprehension. Similarly, TESOL instructors can establish clear guidelines for writing and speaking activities, encouraging students to adhere to specific language structures and terminology.
šŸ’” Visual Support: STE encourages the use of diagrams, illustrations, and other visual aids to enhance understanding. In TESOL classrooms, instructors can incorporate visual support materials such as charts, graphs, and multimedia presentations to reinforce key concepts and promote active engagement.
ā†© Practice and Feedback: In STE, practice and feedback are essential for reinforcing learning and improving communication skills. Likewise, in TESOL instruction, providing ample opportunities for students to practice English language skills through speaking, writing, and interactive activities is crucial. Constructive feedback helps learners identify areas for improvement and build confidence in using English in technical contexts.

2024.05.14 15:16 RevolutionaryGas6406 Advertising during the Holiday Season for Wishlists

We are looking to start advertising for wishlists around OctobeEarly November for our game weā€™re planning on Next Fest-ing and PAX-ing the following year in February and May.
One question we have is how much traction weā€™d have during the holiday advertising rush vs before Black Friday and after new years. We are probably going to experiment regardless but in the event that our capital is better spent during the off-season weā€™d like to know beforehand if itā€™s better to wait out the holidays. Or if quality conversions are going to be really good the following year is it worth maybe even doubling down into the holidays so weā€™re more competitive.
Budget is around 20k for October through December for context.

Introduction
Hello, my name is Inkh-Su (ģøģˆ˜). I have been roleplaying since 2009 and started playing D&D 2018. I am hoping that you will be interested in my homebrew world of Myhrr. It is a work of consistent passion. I have passed 50 pages of content and have handcrafted over 30 explorable cities, tile-by-tile.
Myhrr is a living world developed by the DM, and a story lead by the players.
I prefer players who want to emotionally invest in NPCs, their party members, and their own characters. My aim is to naturally draw characters together into an interweaving story of relationships, action, and heroism.
My five main inspirations are The Books of Magic, Berserk, Merlin, Odin Sphere & The Last Unicorn.
I adhere to rules that maximize your exploration and sense of curiosity. I don't try to predict players, I just adapt to their actions. I study player strengths & weaknesses to spotlight them and write a balanced story. Depending on backstory, I grant geographical, social, and historical information.
Much of the world is a medieval, war-torn, feudalist place that has just found a respite from war. Power wavers with uncertainty, under the constant threat that war will return. Nobles attempt to secure peace alongside bloodstained battlegrounds. Royalty seizes power by sword, flame, accusation and subterfuge.
Whilst the faith in currency is unshaken, Trade is unstable. Promises are rare. The hunt of witches, warlocks, wizards and druids is ceaseless in a war against the unholy forces of magic and devilry.
Myhrr is plagued with economic inequality and xenophobia. Whilst half-orcs, tieflings, and goblins are capable of citizenship they are treated as second class citizens. Faced with the constant truths of their loathsome origins, demonic history, and biological differences they find little respite among other races.
Where half/elves are constantly bombarded with opportunity, these marginalized races find none.
Dungeons in the world are difficult to find. One requires research of the hundreds of books in the world, or a quick tongue and a fast blade, to take such information. Yet there are riches, power, and secrets hidden away behind the abominations of the deep and the traps that lay within. Those who seek answers in the hidden places of the world are at true risk of death or worse.
Think fast or die, traps don't wait and neither do monsters.
The core of every event lies a mystery. A quandary of history, social intrigue and chasing after evidence. Ancient secrets, political dealings, and criminal ones. The world's history is extensive but only a player who wishes to know the lore of the world will discover it.
One of the things I'm proud of in my game are its people. I've been roleplaying for over a decade and believe that every NPC will have more depth than any player will care about. Ingrained into the world and its culture; they have fears, desires and interact with an intelligence befitting of their environment.
Magic comes with a constant emotional and social contract. Only four classes are considered magical. Sorcerer, Druid, Warlock, and Wizard. All other classes use non-magical flavored versions of their spells. Each class uses magic uniquely, yet none of it is as reliable as sword or bow. Magic, no matter it's origin, has a will of its own.
Most cultures believe sorcery, druidry, and wizardry to be witchcraft.
Sorcerers do not have control over their innate power without having control over their own hearts. Druids must build a true relationship with nature and balance. Warlocks are required to debate and negotiate with cruel devils. Wizards are mysterious and grow in power as they follow a path of wonder.
The world has several holidays and I'd love to watch your character celebrate too.
Finally, the game is played with a flowing system of time. Time moves regardless of what your character is or isn't doing. Players who act quickly, describe their actions, act their dialogue and invest their hearts will quickly find themselves escaping the arm of mere RAW rules and mechanics.
I am rewarded by players who will sit after a game and theorize about NPCs, History and Intentions and have plans on how they want to act on the world. Reactive players are alright, but players who develop a judgment and work to act on that judgment are rewarded.
I am also rewarded by characters who act on and with emotionality to NPCs and with each other. My favorite moments are listening to the building moment of character clashes and support when they make discoveries that reveal pieces of themselves and each other.

2024.05.14 15:10 DietAccomplished8104 First Year Journey in Communication

As I reflect on my journey of learning about communication in my first year college experience, I'm reminded of the many important lessons I've already learned from elementary to high school. From the basics of language to the intricacies of relationships, I've learned that effective communication is a skill that requires practice, patience, and attention to detail. It's not just about speaking or writing, but about understanding and being understood by others.
One of the first lessons I learned was the importance of using words to show where things are or the ā€œPrepositions of Placeā€. For example, "in," "on," "at," and "by" help us understand where things are located. I learned that these little words can make a big difference in how we communicate. Without them, we might be left wondering where something is or what someone is talking about. For instance, if someone says "I left my book at the library," we need to know that "at" means it's located at the library, not just anywhere. Another important lesson I learned was how to use words to compare things or the ā€œComparative and Superlative Adjectivesā€. For example, "big," "bigger," and "biggest" help us describe things accurately. By mastering these words, I was able to express myself more clearly and effectively. This has been especially helpful when describing things that are hard to measure, like personality or intelligence. By using words like "more confident" or "more intelligent," we can convey a sense of comparison without getting too technical. Another lesson Iā€™ve also learned is ā€œComparing and Contrastingā€ which are also essential skills in communication. Whether we're discussing the pros and cons of two products or highlighting the similarities between two ideas, being able to compare and contrast helps us understand things better. This is especially important in academic settings, where we need to analyze and evaluate different sources of information. By comparing and contrasting, we can identify patterns and trends that might not be immediately apparent. Classifying is another important lesson I learned. By grouping similar things together, we can make it easier for others to understand and remember what we're saying. This skill has been particularly helpful in school, where we need to organize complex information in a clear and easy-to-understand way. For example, when studying for a test, I might group similar concepts together into categories like "cause and effect" or "types of government." This helps me to see the relationships between different ideas and remember them more easily.
However, it's not just about talking, effective communication also requires listening and understanding others. I learned that paying attention to what others are saying and how they're saying it is just as important as speaking clearly. By doing so, we can build trust and strengthen relationships. When we listen actively, we show that we value and respect the other person's thoughts and feelings. This can help to create a sense of community and cooperation. In addition to these skills, I've also learned the importance of tone and body language in communication. Our tone of voice can convey a sense of emotion or emphasis, while our body language can show whether we're engaged or disinterested. For example, if someone says something in a sarcastic tone, we might interpret it differently than if they said it in a neutral tone. Similarly, if someone is standing with their arms crossed while talking to us, we might perceive them as defensive or uncooperative.
Another important aspect of communication is feedback. Giving and receiving feedback is crucial in helping us improve our communication skills. When we receive feedback, we can learn from our mistakes and adjust our approach accordingly. For example, if someone tells us that our message wasn't clear, we might rephrase it or provide more context to help others understand better. In conclusion, my journey of learning about communication has been filled with valuable lessons that have helped me become a better communicator. From using words to show where things are to comparing and contrasting, classifying, listening actively, paying attention to tone and body language, and giving and receiving feedback, I've learned that effective communication is a skill that requires practice, patience, and attention to detail. By incorporating these skills into my daily interactions, I've been able to communicate more effectively, build stronger relationships, and achieve my goals with greater ease.
As I continue on this journey of learning and growth in terms of communication, I'm reminded that effective communication is an ongoing process that requires continuous effort and practice. By staying curious, seeking feedback, and embracing new challenges, I'm confident that I will continue to improve my skills and become an even more effective communicator. Whether it's in personal or professional settings, effective communication is key to building strong relationships and achieving our goals.

2024.05.14 15:08 hundredvisions Who I thought the Dream Guardian really was

I'm not really sure how exactly it happened, but I do have some clues. I think I probably took so long carefully crafting my perfect character, that when I was finally done and instead of embarking on an epic journey, was greeted with another character creation screen telling me I need a Guardian, I just randomly clicked on the first pre-made portrait that happened to be a female githyanki.
Then, after my first session, I had to take a long break from gaming and only got back to the game after 2 or 3 months. At this point I completely forgot I 'created' anyone else then my original character. So I'm happily exploring Act 1 with my little party, from which I dropped Lae'zel pretty fast because I just didn't trust her. She wasn't killed, but wasn't at my camp either, and I generally thought of her as a suspicious character that might just have something to do with my kidnapping.
And then, the first contact with my dream guardian happens, and she comes up to me as a female gith I have zero recollection of creating myself, so I think to myself: aha, this must be Lae'zel coming back to haunt me after I ditched her. Why isn't she using her real name though? Nevermind, she's probably important to the plot and this is the devs' way of ensuring I don't miss out on this part of the game, even if I don't have her in my party.
So this is what I believed until the big reveal. Each time I talked or met with a dream guardian, I was sure it was Lae'zel making sure I was okay and being really persistent about it. Felt a little weird to see her care so much to protect me after we met on the nautiloid for just an hour and then parted ways, but hey, if this was the studio and the writers' idea, who am I to question it?
And then, when I met the guardian in their true form, I was still like, okay? So the plot twist was that she really was one of them the whole time? I KNEW! Something only clicked for me later, when I saw a post in this subreddit where people were talking about randomizing the dream guardian's looks or making them into something specific, and I thought oh... so I created them... oh... so this really is a whole another person...
Now on my second playthrough I made them attractive and let me tell you does this hit different, even though I know what's coming. Kind of bummed I cheated myself out of this plot twist because it would have been one of those gaming moments you remember forever.

2024.05.14 15:05 jdcampbell98 AV Receiver Advice

AV Receiver Advice
Hi, Iā€™ve just moved house and was gifted these Bowers Wilkins DM602.5 speakers. Previously, I only ever used that soundbar that you can see in the photo but Iā€™d like to get rid of it and use the L/R speakers instead however Iā€™m pretty stuck in choosing an AV receiver as thereā€™s a lot of different info out there.
For context, Iā€™d be using it mostly for movies and gaming via my XboxOneS but also to play music from my record player.
I donā€™t have much interest in buying more speakers/surround sound or a 4K TV, but I would like to buy a subwoofer one day.
Thing is everything I look at online is recommending Ā£400-800 AV Receivers (I live in UK) but I donā€™t think Iā€™d have any use for all the features that come with these. Bluetooth for streaming music would be handy, as well as ALLM and VRR for gaming, but I could get by without.
My budget is maximum Ā£400 but for my simple needs is there a cheaper receiver that could do the job just as well?
Thank you in advance for your help! šŸ™šŸ»

2024.05.14 15:03 EarlOfRats Feedback needed: Work in progress PoC interaction order guide

Info

This is a work in progress guide attempting to explain the order of interactions if more than one unit/item/power have the same text, such as multiple "Round start"-s. If you know your Path and you see any issues here, please comment so we can fix it: preferably with proof of the interaction in question. Any help is greatly appreciated and we can hopefully make this into a complete guide once we flesh out the details.
The guide was made by several members of the powercuties PoC discord server. Testing was done on the current patch but it wasn't exhaustive, so we'd be happy to receive feedback here or in the relevant thread in the server.

Play/Summon

Each of these levels has 3 tiebreakers:
Exceptions: items and relics have a top to bottom tiebreaker (aka first taken item activates first) but Shadow Totem activates before Stalker's Blade, Reckoner Mark and Iceborn Gauntlet, regardless of the order they were taken in.
Note 1: if another unit has a "when a unit is summoned" text, that seems to activate AFTER the summoned unit's items do. Not sure if it's before or after powers though Note 2: for adventures with mutators, the Foe always has the mutator as their bottommost (first to activate) power. That's true for all powers, not just play/summon Note 3: there's a visual bug that orders items and relics differently when hovering/viewing the card sometimes, but it doesn't affect the interaction order. That's true for all items, not just play/summon

Round start and Game start

Game start (once, obviously) -> natural attack token swap -> Player with attack token's powers -> Other player's powers -> Round Start Effects (explained below) -> natural draw 1
Round Start Effects:
Tiebreaker for powers: bottom to top. Another way to put it is: first taken is first activated
Tiebreaker for items: top to bottom. Another way to put it is: first taken is first activated
Exceptions:

Round end

Item (Galeforce) -> Round Ender's powers -> Other Player's power -> Round Ender's keywords/unit text -> Other Player's keywords/unit text
Tiebreaker for powers: bottom to top. Another way to put it is: first taken is first activated
Note: The only round end items in the game that activate on board are Galeforce (rare relic) and Bloodletter's Veil (from the Crimson Aristocrat encounter). Testing has been done with the former because it's unreliable to get the latter. For that same reason we're not sure if the Other Player's items activate before or after the Round Ender's powers, however that doesn't matter in 99.99% of games

2024.05.14 15:01 KoenigOne I'm So Depressed Because of This Game (spoiler)

I started playing Cyberpunk when the Liberty City DLC came out. I've completed every side mission, gig, and most of the world interactions. But for some reason, I couldn't start the final main mission to end the game.
I always hesitated, so I put the game down for 6 months. Then, I returned to finally complete the final mission. My character went into a coma, and now all of my friends don't want to see me or act as if they don't care about me anymore.
Reed told me I will never be the same person again, and Viktor is not enjoying his job anymore. My leaving the game for 6 months and then returning added a lot to this ending, as I felt like I was ACTUALLY away from my friends and I deserve the hate.
Someone like Judy, when I picked up the phone after the coma and saw her name, I was like "Oohhh I fucking miss her, she must be super excited to see me," only to get a cold response with a straight face as if she doesn't want me around anymore.
The moment that destroyed me the most is when I got the end credit, and Mitch told me not to call this number anymore because Panam hates me now.
All those feelings got mixed up with anger and annoyance after finding out that I don't have a New Game+ option. I just wanted to go back and fix my mistakes, but having to replay all of the gigs and side missions and recollect the items all over again didn't sound interesting to me. I just wanted to share this because I couldn't sleep because of it yesterday and felt like I want to talk about it.

2024.05.14 15:01 NotThatIMatter124 Anyone else play Custodes in One Page Rules' Grimdark Future system?

For a bit of context, Grimdark Future is a fairly long-standing, independently developed set of wargaming rules made as an alternative to 40k/30k.
It's main biggest advantage is that it's free and you can use any 40k or AoS/Fantasy army you have in it, as well as any custom models, Custodes (known as Custodian Brothers in the system) included. Also, Skaven and Lizardmen have a faction which I find wonderful.
I've played a couple of test games, and being honest, I really like it. I won't say it is strictly better or worse than 40k as a system, as it really feels too different to what 40k is, with advantages and drawbacks.
There's no codex books, just a set of faction rules that are updated quarterly with points adjustments. The core rules are set to be updated annually. The rules are really quite simplified, model units all have just two basic stats: Quality and Defense, as well as weapon profiles and abilities.
When it comes to Custodians, our models get the "Toughness" ability, making them multi-wound models. Some like our bikes have "Fast" and "Fly", making them able to move through terrain or increase their base movement from 6" to 8", etc (everything moves 6" by default in this game system, no Movement stat exists for units).
But the best bit IMO is: wargear freedom. Like in Horus Heresy, we get a full-on arsenal of weapons to choose from, we can put shields on nearly anything, we can make any non-terminator model into "Wardens" that give them a feel no pain effect. Want to give a Melta weapon mount to your Allarus' spear? You can do that. Saggitarum with shields? Go ahead. Essentially: list building is a fun process.
All of our models except the Orion Dropship and Ares Gunship are included in some form, so whether you have GW or FW Custodes models, you can play this system no problem. Same goes of Sisters of Silence, they can be run as a part of the army as well (they have access to magic, rather than shutting that down as one of their things).
In terms of the army overall, we are properly elite of the elite, one of our single models can easily take up 30-40% of your list at lower points games, same with full units. In return, we are noticeably beefy and exceptionally deadly. I'd say thematically, appropriately so.
The main drawback is that, well, not very many people play Grimdark Future AFAIK compared to 40k, hence this post asking: who else plays?
Honestly, given the state of Custodes in 40k and 40k overall becoming very frustrating with how swingy the state of factions can be, I am probably going to move to Grimdark Future as my system of choice going forward.

2024.05.14 15:00 Honestly_ Not just EA Sports: *All* NCAA college football game covers & athletes, including Sony's NCAA GameBreaker, Sega Sports, and a few others

With the EA Sports College Football 25 cover being released this Thursday, I thought it would be interesting to look back at all covers ā€” and not just the EA covers, but the athletes featured on covers of rival games by Sony, Sega, and other competitors.
Competition is a good thing. Putting these in chronological order takes me back to the era where there were options (I bought my first game in the '90s, and played a lot of 2k2).
If you count the 2 players that are identifiable off of "College Football USA 96" there have been 36 cover athletes across 34 editions of college football games (plus an active coach, mascot, two band members, and an unidentified player)
This post is going to look cleaner in "old" view. You can swap the "www" with "old" in the URL or just click here.

Various developers:

EA Sports's developers:
  • High Score Productions (1993: Genesis, Sega CD; 1994-96)
  • Visual Concepts (1993: SNES)
  • Tiburon Entertainment (1997-98), bought/renamed EA Tiburon (1999-2013), renamed EA Orlando (2024)
  • Exient Entertainment (2003: N-Gage)
Sega Sports's developers:
  • BlueSky Software (1994-95) [developers of Joe Montana series]
  • Visual Concepts & Avalanche Software (2001-02) [NFL 2K & NFL Blitz, respectively]
Sony Computer Entertainment America's developers:
  • Sony Interactive Studios America (1996-97), renamed Red Zone Interactive (1998-99), renamed 989 Studios (2000)
Aspyr Media's developer:
  • Nerjyzed Entertainment (2007: Windows; 2009: 360)

Further notes:

Bill Walsh was picked because there was an early-theme of having big names on sports video games.
  • EA actually started this back when they were the cool, bad boy of games in the 1980s (I'm that old, they packaged their games like records and put photos of their programmers that made them look like musicians on the back) with the pioneering PC game One on One: Dr. J vs. Larry Bird (1983), later updated to Jordan vs. Bird: One on One (1988).
  • Nintendo got into it by localizing Punch-Out! as Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (1987) for NES. EA brought out John Madden Football (1988) for PC.
  • Sega was wild about this when they launched the Genesis with Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf (1989), Tommy Lasorda Baseball (1989), Pat Riley Basketball (1990), Joe Montana Football (1991).
  • 1993: Bill Walsh! There even was an EA Coach K college hoops game.
Bill Walsh may have got the cover curse:
  • While he had retired from the San Francisco 49ers on top, after winning his 3rd Super Bowl, he had only returned to the Farm for a year when he was picked (he had a good first tenure in the 70s before jumping to the 49ers).
  • In 1992 he took the Cardinal to a Blockbuster Bowl win and a #9 rank. Signed this deal for EA.
  • After the first game came out he had two bad seasons and re-retired for good.
The progression of teams is fun to see.
  • 1993: the top 24 college football teams from 1992 + 24 of the all-time greatest teams since 1978. The teams were unlicensed so they used city and state names, especially where similar to their real names (e.g. Michigan). But you got some fun results like a spirited game of "South Bend, IN" vs "Raleigh, NC"
  • 1994: 36 Division I-A teams, but the bowls were still not included: Instead we get Maple Bowl, Palm Bowl, Pecan Bowl, and Redwood Bowl
  • 1995: first version to feature all (108 at the time) Division l-A teams, the real bowl games like Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, and Rose. Includes older names but also the Pacific Tigers, which actually dropped football before the game was released.
The rights to the title "NCAA" license wasn't obtained by EA until 1998 (as you can see there was an earlier one-off by Mindscape). Its ability to use the NCAA's brands in the the football game was actually the secondary result of a licensing deal intended primarily for an EA "March Madness" basketball game.

2024.05.14 14:57 fanderpander The differences between mentalization, metacognition, reflective functioning, and secondary cognition

Mentalization, metacognition, and reflective functioning are related concepts that pertain to understanding and processing thoughts and emotions, particularly in the context of social interactions and relationships. While they share some similarities, they also have distinct differences:
Mentalization: This refers to the ability to understand and interpret both one's own mental state and the mental states of others, including thoughts, feelings, intentions, beliefs, and desires. It involves being able to recognize that behavior is driven by internal mental states and to make inferences about those states. Mentalization is crucial for effective social functioning, empathy, and the formation of secure attachments. It's often associated with the development of theory of mindā€”the understanding that others have beliefs, desires, and perspectives that may differ from one's own.
Metacognition: Metacognition involves the awareness and understanding of one's own thought processes. It refers to the ability to monitor, control, and regulate one's cognitive processes, such as problem-solving, decision-making, memory, and attention. Metacognitive skills include things like self-reflection, self-awareness, planning, evaluating, and adapting strategies. While metacognition primarily focuses on cognition and cognitive processes, it can also extend to emotions and social interactions.
Reflective Functioning: Reflective functioning is a concept often used in the context of attachment theory and psychoanalytic approaches. It refers to the capacity to reflect upon and understand one's own and others' internal experiences in the context of attachment relationships, particularly in the parent-child relationship. Reflective functioning involves the ability to mentalize about attachment-related experiences and emotions, such as understanding how early attachment experiences influence current relationships and behaviors. It's closely linked to empathy, emotional regulation, and the ability to form secure attachments.
In summary, while mentalization, metacognition, and reflective functioning all involve aspects of self-awareness and understanding others, they differ in their emphasis and context. Mentalization focuses on understanding both one's own and others' mental states in social interactions, metacognition centers on awareness and regulation of one's own cognitive processes, and reflective functioning relates specifically to understanding attachment-related experiences and emotions in the context of relationships.
While metacognition typically refers to the awareness and regulation of one's own cognitive processes, secondary cognition extends this concept to include the awareness and regulation of cognitive processes in others, as well as in broader social contexts.
In other words, secondary cognition involves not only understanding and managing one's own thoughts and mental processes but also being able to perceive, interpret, and respond to the cognitive processes of others. This includes skills such as perspective-taking, understanding others' beliefs and intentions, and recognizing social norms and conventions.
So, if we were to place secondary cognition within the framework of the concepts you mentioned:
Metacognition: Primary focus on awareness and regulation of one's own cognitive processes.
Secondary Cognition: Extension of metacognition to include awareness and understanding of others' cognitive processes, as well as broader social cognitive skills.
Mentalization: Specific focus on understanding both one's own and others' mental states in social interactions.
Reflective Functioning: Focus on understanding attachment-related experiences and emotions in the context of relationships, particularly in the parent-child relationship.

2024.05.14 14:56 Own-Market-567 goodbye to my favorite game officially

Boy oh boy I'm mad disappointed, if they wanted to make a mobile game then launch it separately, EVEN MY MOM WHO HAS NO CLUE ABOUT GAMES SAID SO, WHY MESS UP A PERFECTLY FINE GAME?
I had hoped that they wouldn't break my faith I had with them, I followed every update on socials they put out but for what? Deciding to keep the game catered to little kids with mobile phones? Forgetting the big base they had with us? WHat kind of company does that?
Oh and I was planning on buying the star wars pack because I had a great experience until this update, I'm so glad I listened to you guys and waited because I'm done.
Thank you to this community, and goodbye.

2024.05.14 14:47 Virtual_Inspector773 Is the book Jedi: Battle Scars worth reading?

For context I recently downloaded Jedi Survivor from Xbox Game Pass because I was bored and found the game to be very fun (legit hasn't happened since 2021), and I decided to try and learn about the lore. I have seen all the Star Wars movies but nothing else (my brother had Jedi: Fallen Order so I somewhat understand what happened in the previous game, since I had to help him defeat some bosses), but I wanted to research the lore a bit and was wondering if reading the book would be worth it (or if it's even canon)? If it's not worth reading could someone summarize the most important points of the book/stuff which actually matters in the games, it would be very helpful.

2024.05.14 14:45 Glittering_Pen_9866 AIO for getting upset that my boyfriend added a girl in a game for his friend?

My boyfriend was playing a game with his friend but I didn't join and he wanted me around, so I just joined their call and watched the live stream of their game. One of their teammates (random) was named "e sex demon" and my boyfriend immediately asked them if they liked having e sex (as a joke). I don't remember the exact thing the person responded, but they said yes and typed out ":3" and had a few more exchanges and I immediately knew she was a girl (not bcs of the ":3" alone, but) based on the way she typed, so I messaged my boyfriend saying, "What if she's a girl?" (because I was muted and didn't feel like talking).
Fast forward to the end of their game, I initially wasn't listening to him and his friend but then my boyfriend said something about adding her because his friend told him to. He further said that the friend just wanted to find out what the rank of the girl was to hopefully play with her. I left the call with them abruptly after that in a half joke half serious way, and my boyfriend messaged me and that's when I knew I was actually really upset.
I expressed that I was uncomfortable with him adding her considering their first exchanges. He said that his friend just made him add her even though he didn't want to because the friend wanted to see her rank and invite her to a game as a trio if they were the same rank. I asked him if he was his friend's puppet and if his friend couldn't just do it himself. He told me that his friend couldn't because his game bugs out sometimes and won't let him add people. I told him that it makes me uncomfortable that he keeps adding these girls for his friend, and even more uncomfortable because he just had a mini conversation with this girl asking if she likes having e sex or she does it often as a joke.
I told him that yes, his friend told him to add her, but considering their previous interaction, I'm not comfortable with it. He explained that he didn't know she was a girl until she voice commed "ggs" at the end of their game. I mentioned that I messaged him saying what if she's a girl because I had a feeling she was a girl (or I knew atp). He scrolled back to our chats and said that he didn't see that message earlier.
He didn't do anything wrong, but it's not the first time he's added girls that either flirted with him or has innuendos in the way they talk for his friend and it doesn't sit right with me. I can also tell when the person is a girl right away (idk how, aside from gut feeling, typing style, and word use). It makes me uncomfortable knowing they can talk to him or he can talk to them, especially because if his friend is interested in them, I think that he should do it alone and not bring my boyfriend into it. That's just what I think. I also get frustrated because he can't seem to say "no" to his friend even when he says he doesn't wanna do what he's being told to do. I don't know why. It frustrates me. Part of the reason I know I was upset is jealousy, and the other is just an annoyance for his friend and how my boyfriend always follows what he says. AIO?
