2024.04.27 15:30 kenUdigitt Novel Chapter 400

Disclaimer: I do not speak Korean. This is purely translated by machine with a lot of cleanup afterward. With that in mind, I am open to criticism to improve these translations. Enjoy!
Chapter 400
From the moment he first crossed swords with Jin Tae-Kyung, the Black Knight instinctively knew.
'He's strong.'
The adversary before him was undoubtedly formidable. Even with every ounce of his strength, victory remained uncertain; he was facing someone of equal or superior might.
As they matched each blow for blow, his realization deepened.
'This is going to be a tough fight.'
Yet, neither fear nor retreat took hold within the Black Knight.
He served his Monarch with unwavering loyalty, driven by a mission to execute his sovereign's will.
They were titans clashing, where even a minor edge could pivot the outcome of battle.
'If I don't give up, an opportunity will come.'
The Black Knight clung to this belief.
It was an adage he’d recited since childhood, one that had carried him through countless conflicts and forged his strength.
'...I did?'
Confusion clouded his thoughts; his movements became erratic.
His adversary was too skilled to overlook such a lapse.
Swoosh, scrape!
The spear's blade tore through decaying flesh.
Bang!
A burst of blue flame engulfed his chest.
Amidst the scorching blaze, the Black Knight registered a feeling: pain.
'What is this...?'
It wasn’t the pain that baffled him, but the odd familiarity of this alien sensation.
'These memories... what on earth are they?'
His chest pulsed with pain, his head throbbed.
With each relentless strike that forced him back, flashes of an unknown person’s life raced before him.
'This can't be!'
'The Mana Adaptability score is incredibly high. It's the highest ever recorded!'
'We need to enroll him in the Chinese Training Program immediately!'
Figures clad in pristine white clothes buzzed with enthusiasm, while a middle-aged man in a stern, dark uniform observed.
'Chinese Training Program? Are you suggesting we raise this child to be a Hunter?'
'Of course, it must be so. This child is only thirteen years old and already has a Mana Adaptability score comparable to Fei Chen. He has enough potential to become an S-rank Hunter, or even the best in our nation!'
'I refuse.'
'W-what?'
'No, Lieutenant General Wei. What do you mean? This child is...'
'Enough.'
The middle-aged man’s voice was measured and quiet.
'He's my only nephew. What I promised my sister was to make him happy, not to turn him into a Hunter and put him in danger.'
'Awakened Hunter is a noble profession. If this child becomes an S-rank Hunter, it will be a blessing for everyone!'
'I know how noble their work is. But that's also how my brother-in-law...'
He paused, shaking his head.
'Whatever you say, my decision won't change. If there weren't orders from above, he wouldn't have even been tested. We'll leave now, so please handle things on your own.'
'Lieutenant General Wei, Lieutenant General Wei!'
Ignoring the shouts behind him, the middle-aged man walked over with a strained smile and reached out his hand.
'You've waited a long time, right? Let's go now.'
The Black Knight, or rather, the owner of the memories, took the middle-aged man’s hand.
A tiny, pale hand.
Soon, a youthful voice broke the silence.
'Uncle.'
'Hmm?'
'I want to become a Hunter.'
In that moment, a tumult of emotions played across the middle-aged man’s face.
He bit his lip, watching silently for a long moment before exhaling a worried sigh as faces alight with optimism approached from behind.
'The Chinese Training Program is a project crafted with great care. It is thoroughly safe and highly effective. Wu Hei-Xing of the same age is also doing well.'
'If the child changes his mind, we will stop at any time.'
The most senior among them laid a hand on the middle-aged man’s shoulder and said,
'Please trust us and leave him in our care, Lieutenant General Wei Feng-Hu.'
Wei Feng-Hu, Wei Feng-Hu...
The name resounded endlessly within the Black Knight’s mind, a name deeply cherished and profoundly missed.
Bang!
Was the pain in his chest from the blow he had received, or was it from something more profound?
As the Black Knight staggered, another memory surfaced before his eyes.
'Do you think you're the best because the adults praise you?'
A boy clad in a black suit, bow tie, and polished shoes stared at him with piercing eyes.
'Don't be mistaken. I'm the best. You're next in line!'
The Black Knight's vision tilted, and then a naive voice flowed out.
'Alright. Let's go with that.'
'What?'
'I'm fine with being second. Third is okay too, and I don't mind even being last.'
The boy with the sharp expression gaped.
'Are you stupid? Do you want to be worse than Jang Wei, who's currently the worst in the training camp?' [Note: this was one of the Hunters we met in Chapter 391.]
'But Jang Wei is kind and helps others too, right? He'll make a great Hunter.'
'Y-you're mocking me, aren't you?'
'No, not really. I just do whatever you like... Ouch!'
Thud!
Within moments, he had overpowered the boy who had lunged at him unexpectedly. The boy squirmed under his hold, yelling,
'I'm the best! Wu Hei-Xing is the best at everything!'
As one memory faded, another rose. It was as if someone was calmly throwing stones into a tranquil pond.
The Black Knight's mind was continually disturbed by these unknown recollections.
'Top trainee, ..., step forward.'
A handful of individuals occupied the expansive area.
Somehow, he found himself moving automatically at the call, which he barely registered.
Step. Step.
His stride was steady and purposeful, his field-of-view more elevated than before.
Now a young man, he approached an elder in uniform who affixed a medal to his chest.
A familiar face from his earliest memories whispered,
'Will you not regret this?'
'I have no regrets. I haven't before, and I won't in the future.'
'Most people will never know of your existence. Perhaps you might have to live like a shadow all your life.'
'I learned that another name for a Hunter is a guardian. Just because I'm not seen doesn't mean my honor disappears.'
'There is something I've never said to you before.'
Strength infused the middle-aged man's grip as he clasped his shoulder.
'I am proud of you. Thank you for growing up so well.'
'Thank you. Uncle. No... Father.'
His smile was radiant, and moisture welled in the corners of his eyes.
As a single tear trailed down his lined cheek to the podium, another memory emerged.
'Is anybody there?'
On a balmy spring day, he found himself at a quaint flower shop. Peering inside, surrounded by a riot of colors, she came toward him.
'Welcome!'
Her step was light, her eyes keen as a cat's.
Her voice rang with vivacity and beauty...
Now a man, far removed from his boyhood, he felt his heart skip.
'Sir?'
'No, I, that is... I've, um, come to buy flowers.'
'For your parents? Or for a lover?'
'F-for my parents. Well, not exactly parents, but the uncle who raised me...'
'Hmm. I see. But you speak so formally. Are you by any chance a soldier?'
'No, not exactly...'
It was an odd memory. His speech stumbled, his vision gradually fading to white.
When he came to, he was clutching a bouquet of vibrant flowers, standing bewildered in a hospital room.
'You. I told you it's just a mild pneumonia. There was no need to come... But what is that?'
At the question from the middle-aged man, Wei Feng-Hu, his response was dreamlike.
'It's flowers.'
'Is that supposed to be a get-well gift?'
'Yes.'
'So you're telling me that you brought chrysanthemums as my get-well gift?' [Note: flower girl done did Lei Fei dirty. While chrysanthemums do not directly symbolize death in many Asian cultures, white chrysanthemums are often associated with praying and funerals in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean cultures.]
'Uh... yes?'
'Such an ungrateful bastard! Hey, you bastard!'
Swish! Swack!
Laughter escaped him as he was struck with the bouquet, and he couldn’t contain a chuckle at his own blunder, his thoughts drifting back to the girl as lovely as the chrysanthemums.
After that, his visits to the flower shop became a daily ritual.
'Ah, hello!'
'Welcome... Oh, you've come again?'
'Haha.'
'It's the chrysanthemums, right? The pure white ones.'
Spring, summer, autumn, winter.
Over the course of a year, their dynamic had evolved beyond merely that of a shopkeeper and customer.
'I have something to say.'
'What is it?'
'Will you marry me?'
'…Ah.'
'I'll make you happy.'
This memory lingered the longest of any thus far.
After a silence that seemed to stretch for decades, she finally responded.
'I have something to say too.'
'No, first you should answer…'
'I'm pregnant.'
'What?'
Thump, thump thump. Thump thump thump!
His heart raced uncontrollably, and the Black Knight writhed in agony.
'Ah, aah, aaaah!'
His head felt as though it was bursting, as if his very being was being compressed.
Amid this unimaginable pain, another memory emerged.
'Wah, waah waah!'
'Is this child...'
'Congratulations on becoming a father, darling.'
The birth of a new life. And then growth.
'Dada. Dadada!'
'Darling. Darling! Did you hear that? He's already calling for dad, could our child be a genius?'
'Could you change the diaper?'
'Just wait a moment. I want to hear it again.'
'Dada, mama!'
'Hahaha! Yes! We are your dad and mom!'
The day the baby first managed to roll over, crawl on all fours, and then walk...
The man felt as though he possessed the whole world.
Yet, these idyllic days soon morphed into a nightmare.
'The magical power levels have surged in the Gaoping District!'
'Gaoping District? Keep trying to contact them and prepare the 2nd Regiment for deployment just in case.'
'Sir, the communications have been cut off.'
'What?'
Disaster struck without forewarning.
The man quickly rallied his troops and moved toward the epicenter of chaos, facing a scene beyond belief.
'Kyaooooo!'
'Everyone, run... Cough!'
Crash! Boom!
Flames engulfed the once-serene city sky, as hordes of monsters ravaged the populace below.
Amidst cries of agony and death, the man unsheathed his sword.
'Public Security Force!'
Tssss!
The aura blade encircling his weapon shimmered brilliantly.
At his command, roughly a thousand Hunters echoed back with a resounding roar.
They stood as humanity’s shield and protectors, unable to retreat.
'Wipe them all out!'
'Long live the People's Republic of China!'
Adorned in armor bearing the red five-starred flag, they surged forward like a tide, spreading not foam but blood.
'Be annihilated by the flame of terror, Fire Rain.'
Keening.
Beneath a dark, smoldering sky, amidst a downpour of fire, the man's thoughts turned to his beloved wife and five-year-old daughter.
Then, he faced 'that creature.'
'If you had run, you might have lived.'
'I will kill you.'
'You are noble. What is your name, human?'
'I am...'
* * *
"...Lei Fei?"
At the sound of Jin Tae-Kyung's voice piercing his ears, the Black Knight’s body tensed.
The barrier that had contained his past crumbled, and his life began to reassemble itself.
Memories of his thirty-six years as a human flooded his vision.
What am I, exactly?
Amidst the turmoil and agony in the Black Knight’s mind, a commanding roar echoed.
It was an irresistible magical command.
The dim red light in his eyes ignited with renewed intensity.
Tremendous magical power surged forth from the body of Lei Fei, or rather, the Black Knight, who had fallen from sustaining strikes.
Kwaaaa!

### Training:
After a successful trip to Malaga, Spain in December to tackle a winter marathon (2:36:00 - see post history for race report), I took several weeks away from training over the festive / new year period to recover physically and mentally from the training block and focus on work & studies. I received news that my application for Championship Entry at London (sub-2:40) had been accepted and I was absolutely buzzing. Getting into London via the ballot in 2021 was the start of my running journey and I was excited to see how far I’d come from my 3:23:xx debut there as a complete newbie to running. As someone who was born and raised in the city, the London Marathon has always been special and for as long as I can remember, I had always spectated in person or followed on TV , despite not really having any interest in taking part myself. I have worked with an excellent coach since 2022 and we began the training block at the end of January. Through trial and error over past training blocks, we had decided that the best course of action for me this time was relatively low mileage, no double days and a consistent rest day every week. This approach had yielded great results in Malaga and was put in place mostly due to study / work commitments, but also a tendency for myself to get burned out from training too hard in previous blocks. While I ran a great time for Manchester Marathon 2023 (2:39) I found that running every single day and having several double days during the training block led to me not enjoying training, a general lack of motivation and constant niggling injuries. For London this year, the 10-week training block involved hitting 50-65 miles per week, consisting of 2 hard sessions on Tuesday & Thursday, a rest day on Friday and a long run on Sunday. A typical hard session would consist of 1 / 2 / 3 mile repeats with a ½ mile recovery jog, or a 5-10 mile chunk of marathon pace (5:40 min /mile) work sandwiched between a mile warmup/cooldown. The long run was mostly done at a steady pace (between 6-7min /mile pace) and several of them ended with 2-4 miles at marathon pace, just to get my legs used to hitting that pace when fatigued. Thankfully, the only niggling injury I managed to pick up was some inner ankle/arch of foot pain which I attributed to wearing Vaporfly 3 shoes too often (I was wearing them for all hard sessions and long runs). After discussing with my coach, we got rid of them for the 2 weeks before the race and I wore my Saucony Speed 3’s for all running during that time, the pain began to ease off and didn’t impact raceday. To hit a sub-2:30 I knew I would need to maintain a 5:43min /mile pace. To ensure that I slipped under that I decided that 5:40min / mile would be a reasonable target that could buy me valuable seconds if I were able to keep it up. All of my marathon pace sessions had been spent attempting to perfect those 5:40 miles, but I found that I always managed to go either slightly faster or slightly slower in training, so I decided that rather than fretting about live pace and a matter of seconds, I would predominantly run this race on feel and use the mile markers & good old fashioned manual splits to see me through.
### Pre-race:
I spent race week eagerly awaiting the big day while shaking off the maranoia fuelled worries in my head (I had convinced myself that I was getting ill and had developed some imaginary back pain). My raceday outfit was carefully curated and I was extremely excited for it to all come together. I had treated myself to a fancy pair of SOAR trail shorts because of their seemingly infinite amount of pockets to store gels, I bought a new pair of trusty socks for the race (Hilly brand ‘Marathon Fresh’) and my fiancé had surprised me with the premium SOAR version of my running club vest (Mornington Chasers) which fit like a dream. An essential raceday haircut on Thursday evening had me feeling great and oozing with confidence. The Vaporfly 3’s came out of the sinbin. I was ready for action. My fuelling strategy was to take a gel 5 minutes before starting, followed by another every 3 miles alongside a few sips of water at every aid station. After posting a picture on Strava of all those gels, I was given the label of ‘GI Champ’ for supposedly having enough of an iron stomach to take on 9 gels, as well as a Maurten 320 drink mix the evening before/morning of the race. Looking back, I am pretty sure that 9 is my absolute limit but I can’t see myself ever needing any more than that in the future anyway. I used a mixture of Maurten & Hi5 brand gels, with two of them containing caffeine, which were to be taken early on in the race. For the first time ever, I actually got a decent night’s sleep on racecday eve and woke up at 5:30am for a breakfast of toast, PB & honey along with a cup of builder’s tea. I sipped the Maurten drink mix on the tube journey to London Bridge, where we changed trains and got on an insanely packed train to Blackheath. I was excited to experience the Championship start area and was pleased that the insane crowds started to thin out as we turned away from the Blue starting pen to head towards it. What I was greeted with was rather underwhelming at first, as it looked like a smaller version of any other starting pen I had ever been to. However, it was a nice luxury to have queue-free urinals and access to plenty of bottled water and Lucozade Sport. Through the fence I could see the likes of Emile Cairess and his pacer for the day, Phil Sesemann doing their strides in their ‘VIP’ area and this really got the adrenaline pumping as I could hear the elite women’s starting gun firing in the distance. The real Championship magic began when it was finally time to head towards the start line. Wanting to get the full experience, I made it near the front as we lined up and it was absolutely insane to be standing meters behind of some of the finest marathon talent in the world (Bekele, Tola, Cairess etc) as they received their introductions from the announcer. We shuffled forward as the beating heart sound was being pumped from the speakers and before I knew it, legendary GB Olympian Kelly Holmes had smashed the start button and off we flew.
### Race:
The first few miles are ever so slightly downhill, so it is very easy to get carried away, however within seconds I could overhear several surrounding runners revealing that they were also attempting to hit my goal time, so I settled in behind a couple of Clapham Chasers vests and tried not to let them out of my sight. To my delight, I noticed that all the mile markers had the live gun time displayed on them, so pretty early onwards I decided that I wasn’t going to look at my watch at all. I knew that sooner or later the GPS was going to get skewed by the tunnels and skyscrapers, so there was no point in getting used to checking the bleeps on my watch. My plan was to mentally add 5min 40sec to the time displayed on each mile marker and try and reach the next one bang on time, this gave me something to think about and settle my nerves. I went through the first 5km in 17:42 and was pretty happy with that. In my head I had split up the race into three sections: 2 x 10 mile races & 1 x 10km race. For the entirety of the first 10 mile ‘race’ I was absolutely cruising and enjoying the atmosphere. The only negative in this part was the fact that while attempting to toss aside a bottle of water at an aid station, I accidentally threw away one of my gels. While not a cataclysmic fuck up, I was irritated as I knew I would now have to rely on one of the Lucozade Sport gels provided at certain ‘fuel stations’, which is not ideal as I’d never tried them before. However, I figured that I could save that one until the very end and deal with the potential shit-storm (pardon the pun) later. My fiancé always amazes me with how she manages to spectate so efficiently at all of my races. After dropping me at the start, she had a great spot on mile 9 and seeing her screaming my name was the icing on the cake while feeling on top of the world this early on in the race. The second 10 mile ‘race’ went fantastic and I went through halfway in 1:14:46. I knew this was cutting it very fine but I would rather that then go any faster and run out of steam. My club had set up a cheer station at some point in the second 10 mile ‘race’ and their noise and energy was amazing when I flew past them twice on the out-and-back. It was at mile 21 where my care-free cruising came to an end and the wheels started to fall off. At first it was my left calf that suddenly pinged and started to cramp, shortly followed by more of the same on my right. This exact problem occurred in Malaga and I was dreading it happening again. While not completely debilitating, the cramps meant that I had to slow down a tad, which was not ideal but meant that rather than stopping to stretch like I had seen others resort to, I could at least grit my teeth and hammer out those final few miles. Anyone who knows anything about London knows that once you leave Canary Wharf and jump on the straight road towards Embankment, the crowds are insane. I had anticipated my cramping issue to rear its ugly head and knew that on this last 5 mile stretch I would be deep inside the pain cave. To combat this, I had asked my friends and family who were spectating to position themselves between miles 23 – 26 in order to give me a much needed boost. Seeing familiar faces always helps but after taking one mouthful of the untested gel, the taste was foul and I instantly had to spit it out and rely on whatever pitiful amount of glycogen I had left in the tank to see me through. As I passed the Eye and approached Big Ben, I glanced at my watch for the first time in the whole race just to check wether the sub-2:30 was still on. I was disheartened to see that it looked just out of my grasp and I started to slow down. It didn’t take long for me to pull my finger out and shake that feeling off however, as I decided that 2:30 sounds a hell of a lot better than 2:31. This revelation got me sprinting around that right turn at Buckingham Palace, down the mall and I staggered across the line in 2:30:59.
### Post-race:
I hadn’t hit my A-goal but I wasn’t going to let that spoil the party. I had shaved 5 minutes off my personal best and couldn’t be disappointed. Grabbed my medal and hobbled over to my family for the obligatory pictures and celebrations. We decided to head back home to north west London for some celebratory pints that ended up being one too many. A very sore and hungover day at work on Monday followed, where many electrolyte drinks and ibuprofen were consumed. My wedding is taking place later this year as well as the final parts of my study, so for the remainder of the year I will likely only be able to run casually and not train hard. However we all know that is absolute bullshit and I will have signed up for a new race within a few months! Who knows what the future holds, if I can somehow get rid of those cramps, how great I felt for most of that race leaves me confident of shooting for somewhere in the low 2:20s next time, maybe even a 2:19 further down the line, why the hell not!?

2024.04.25 07:51 immapotahto bio kid got in everywhere he applied and cannot decide for his life

Demographics~ Gender: male Residence: bay area Type of School: huge public hs Intended Major(s): computational biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, statistics
my dream major would be structural biology w/ a minor in stats, but no university on the planet has a program similar to that topic. honestly, most universities barely have phd programs for it. my entire college application process was really a battle to find the perfect major and school to prepare me for a PhD in the field while also providing some semblance of a career in case i quit after a bachelor's. as much as i love scientific research right now, there is no guarantee i will after a couple years of college.
Academics GPA (UW/W): 4.28/4.00 w/ a 3.88 GPA at my local CC Rank (or percentile): top decile baby! Grade Boosted Classes: 7 AP / 2 Honors / 8 Dual Enrollment Senior Year Course Load: APES, AP Stats, H Physics, Gov/Econ, Engineering Des&Dev, ERWC + MWH, Astronomy, English @ CC
EDIT: I am in-state for all California schools and I have Canadian citizenship
Standardized Testing SAT I: 1540 (770RW, 770M) AP: bio (self-study), chem, calc AB, ush were 5s, spanish lang was a 4 Extracurriculars/Activities:
Awards/Honors:
Letters of Recommendation AP Calc AB (9/10): she has known me since sophomore year and watched me grow from someone who could barely talk to someone we can both be proud of :) AP Chem (8/10): every week, i would propose an even crazier, messier experiment to try with her already depleted supply cabinet. she agreed to run almost every single one of them. she made me feel like a mad scientist in the best way possible, and has become one of my biggest role models. out of any teacher, she definitely understood my propensity for science the most!
Essays: UC PIQs (1.5 months): I did my best to let each essay convey a completely separate aspect of myself, no matter how much I wanted to yap about SciOly. I felt like these went pretty well, but my leadership PIQ definitely could have used more work. Leadership: solving a dilemma between teams as the captain of my scioly team Creativity: learning to appreciate mistakes in the creative process with website design Talent/Skill: the ability to explain difficult topics to a wide variety of audiences Significant Challenge: overcoming my vocal disorder
CommonApp (2 weeks): The best essay I have written. I do not know what drugs I was on when I wrote this, but I definitely will not write a better piece of writing for a long time. The premise combined two themes: growing up without my parent's culture and my discovery, and consequent love, of the messiness of the scientific process.
Acceptances:
Additional Information: my parents can cover any personal, transportation, and textbook costs and 20k for my tuition + room and board . however, my sister is only 6 years younger than me and i would prefer to leave more money for her. ALSO, i have both dual citizenship in the usa and canada, so all canadian universities will charge me domestic tuition.
Deciding: yeah, i was not expecting this at all. i actually have no idea how i am supposed to come even close to making a decision between these amazing schools in just 6 days time. i think i have narrowed it down to 5 choices, but let me know if i should consider any of my other options before i decline them!
  1. mcgill bioengineering
    1. because i was born there, tuition is only around 3.5k USD the first year and almost zero the following years + housing/food is way cheaper than california! no student loan debt and my parents can breathe a huge sigh of relief
      1. allows me to take summer terms, get a way nicer dorm, eat out more, study abroad, stay an extra semester, the possibilities are endless!
      2. EDIT: room and board for the first year is around 12k USD due to how expensive the dorms are the first year, but that number quickly falls to around 8k once i get my own apartment total cost is 15.5k for first year and 8.5k USD all other years
    2. arguably the most prestigious university in canada with an insane medical school and AI/machine learning research wet dream for computational structural biology lowkey
    3. professional engineering designation, a ton of design and research courses, and no GEs!
    4. miniscule medical focus and not pre-med friendly, which means i don't have to breathe the same air as premed pests!!
    5. downtown in a major city with an amazing public transit system!! i will lose my mind if i have to depend on cars for another 4 years
    6. really bad winters, interesting linguistic war, and extremely far from any friends/family except my grandparents
    7. the program takes 5 years to complete which is so long for an undergrad
      1. for god sakes it literally is entirely master's level classes the last two years i have no idea how am i going to do this
    8. program is really small and new, so it will be a lot easier to get to know my professors for LORs :)
    9. will pay me like 20k to get my master's too
    10. fighting for its life against the quebec government and is pretty underfunded so i have no idea what the future of mcgill will be
    11. it takes so much effort to transfer to literally any other program in case i change my mind (which i have done a quadrillion times)
    12. little to no flexibility in electives/minors/double majors because of super rigid curriculum
  2. UCLA CaSB
    1. 26k will need to take federal loans (no private tho) and will likely place a financial strain on my family
      1. EDIT: i will likely have to take 20-25k total in federal loans
    2. has a much stronger focus on CS, which is way better for both my interest in computational structural biology + potentially becoming a SWE sellout
    3. minors and double majors in so many fields i am interested in!! they literally have a minor in structural biology i'm in love <3
    4. will have to fight my way through more GEs. i have 2/3 of them done but i would prefer to never take another again. especially more english classes oh my god
    5. weather, food, and guaranteed housing are really nice additional benefits!
      1. i hate how isolating the campus can be without a car however
    6. PREMED HELL WHY ARE THEY ALL HERE
      1. it is nice that there is a really good medical school right there for any biomedical research
    7. can finish in 3 years if i take summer CC classes and pray that my enrollment times don't screw me over
    8. can complete my masters in one extra year!
    9. my best friend is going here! some of my friends are going here so i won't be completely isolated in case i need social support
    10. way less travel costs!
  3. UCB ChemBio
    1. 31k will need to take federal + private loans w/ strain on family
      1. BUT i can commute after the first year and cal becomes my cheapest option. i would rather die than spend another 3 years living with my parents and battling my way on the freeway to berkeley, but money is money. there's also bart but its 50 minutes with a transfer :(
    2. has a much weaker focus on CS in exchange for a super in-depth education of biochemistry
      1. can focus on computational chemistry tho
    3. literally one of the best programs in the nation for chemistry?? super heavy on research and has great grad school outcomes
      1. literally has its own college for CoC smaller college feel
      2. i can just casually work with nobel prize winners???
    4. any concerns about safety, weather, and the bay area do not apply to me i literally live here
    5. same GE issue that UCLA suffers from, but to a lesser extent due to the CoC being a separate thing
    6. nonexistent travel costs and i can stay close to my sister!
    7. can easily finish in 3 years even without CC because of how little classes are required for some reason
    8. surrounded by biotech companies that love berkeley grads, though chemistry is not really an employable degree in that sense
  4. UBC Applied Sciences
    1. 7000 USD tuition and way more expensive living than montreal, BUT it is still under 20k USD and the co-op program will likely cover the difference
    2. if i was worried about mcgill taking 5 years, ubc w/ co-op is almost 6!
      1. the co-op program + the engineering degree will have the best earning potential after a bachelor out of any of my options
      2. EDIT: room and board is around 10k USD on campus, and i would prefer to stay on campus due to how bad the housing situation is in vancouver + the campus is isolated with a miniscule housing market
    3. slightly more GEs than McGill but still nothing compared to UCs
    4. the literal hunger games to get into your preferred engineering major
    5. has a top 3 engineering program in canada and a fantastic reputation in the pacific northwest, one of my favorite regions in the world :)
      1. i also have no idea if i like any other sort of engineering than biological. maybe chemical? the general first year would help but it might also be a pain in the ass if i discover engineering wasn't my thing
      2. oh the campus is also the prettiest campus i have ever seen. surrounded by beach on all three sides with the pacific ocean and a mountain range as its backdrop. search it up, you will not be disappointed!
    6. out of all of my options, this option fits my current interests the least
    7. the pacific northwest is known for being socially cold + i will have literally no one i know for hundreds of miles could be an impending social disaster
  5. UCSD Biology w/ Bioinformatics
    1. 29k similar situation to berkeley right now
    2. UCSD's bioinformatics program is the best in the world. full stop. if i want to really dive deep into bioinformatics and pursue it in grad school, ucsd is a no-brainer for opportunities it provides
      1. unfortunately, bioinformatics is much more genomics based and has little to no emphasis on structural biology, which is more a mathematical modeling subject, so ucsd is currently my last choice out of the 5
    3. the campus is gorgeous, likely has the best weather on earth, has a cool residential college system, and surrounded by a ton of biotech companies
    4. i honestly have not thought too much about ucsd after getting into ucb and ucla, but i still it deserves consideration so let me know if there's anything else i should keep in mind!
Advice
Thank you!

2024.04.24 06:50 FateOfMuffins What we know about co-op so far

On May 11/12, 10th Anniversary will begin with the usual Anniversary Sugofest as well as a new game mode on the same day. Co-op is a new game mode where 2 players tackle a single supposedly RANDOM stage together in turns. You can play with a random player or set up rooms with passcodes to play with friends.

Grand Feast Sugofest

In co-op, you will be grinding for Grand Feast (GF) stones, which will be a "F2P" currency used to pull in a seasonal "F2P" Grand Feast Sugofest. There will be 4 seasons in a year (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter), with 3 months of co-op stages for each season, as well as 4 GF Sugos. It appears that the GF gems for each season is a different color so you will not be able to carry over the gems you've grinded from season to season.
In these GF Sugos, you do not get the units you pulled immediately. Instead, you will be able to "stock" up on 5 multis of results, by picking and choosing the best pulls you get. At the end of the season, you will be able to obtain all of the 5x11 stocked pulls. These pulls will also award points based on rarity of units pulled, which will go into a ranking for more rewards (yes... they've made a ranking for gacha pulls LMAO).
There will also be GF Sugo Exclusives ("F2P" Legends?). I expect that in terms of grinding for GF pulls, priority number 1 will be to obtain the GF Sugo Exclusives, priority number 2 will be to obtain new characters for your account and priority number 3 will be the ranking. I do think this likely devalues the end of month PKA turtle Legends even more, as they will be available to be pulled in the GF Sugos (perhaps 3+ months delayed but they will be available), while other exclusives are exclusives.
From what we can tell in their version update video, the schedule will be as follows (note the GF Sugo is only available in the last month of the season):

Stage Breakdowns

Each month there will be boosted types and classes. For the first month, DEX/PSY/INT + FighteShooteCerebral units have boosted stats (I expect these will be the Anniversary units' types and classes), and that QCK/PSY enemies will be more common. They also mentioned that there will be "Trusty Characters", but they also mentioned that just owning the characters will give extra rewards, so it may not be the case like with current content that teambuilding is constrained to boosters.
According to the stage breakdowns, it appears there will be six difficulty levels:
I fully expect the more difficult levels will be nigh impossible unless you are coordinating with a friend outside of the game.
The stages are supposed to be random - in which case I am unsure if you will be able to clear Infinitum Sea every run even if you do coordinate with a friend. It may be that the best strategy is to farm a lower difficulty stage (like we do in PKA) at 100% clear rate. It may be that clearing Infinitum Sea at 50% clear rate results in better rewards still. It may be that zombie teams are the way to go. We don't know.

Co-op Captains + Upgrade Materials

From the videos and screenshots, it appears that 1 unit on the team will be designated a "co-op captain" (friend seems normal). I am unsure if you need to have a co-op captain or if you can just run a regular captain, but the important thing for grinding purposes is that the new LUCK stat is only active with a co-op captain, and LUCK affects the rewards you get.
To unlock a co-op captain, you can either use a co-op tome or level the unit to 150. If the unit is level 150, it will not require any additional materials to unlock co-op captain. A unit that is designated as co-op captain will have a changed co-op captain ability, special, passives and stats, as well as a LUCK stat (which is capped out at +100).
There are 5 possible co-op captain abilities, 1 for each type. Dual units use the type of the character on the left side of the icon. I do not know what happens when you swap dual units or even if they're swappable as co-op captain. There are 6 possible co-op specials, 1 for each PVP class. This makes a total of 30 different possible combinations of CA/special.
The passive is designated by the classes. It seems relatively minor (small resistance), so I don't think this is particularly important when selecting a co-op captain.

Breaking it down in more depth for each ability and upgrade materials (NOTE: YOU MUST FEED THESE MATERIALS THROUGH THE CO-OP MENU ONLY):

Ideal Candidates to Invest in for Co-op Captains

First of all, this cannot be stated enough so I'll put it in the comments as well:

DO NOT SPEND YOUR RESOURCES UNTIL THE GAME MODE DROPS ON MAY 11/12

Don't feed random units to 150, don't feed your medallions, USBs, LUCK or CC. We have no idea how rare the resources will be in the future, we have no idea which units may be "necessary" in the near future, or if they will conflict with Anniversary characters (imagine you level up a Luffy... like your G5... only for Anniversary to drop a new Luffy that you want to use in the mode instead)
Don't feed Legend dupes purely for LUCK. They stated luck is capped at 100, but they also stated that both your luck and your partner's will contribute to the rewards; it may be the case that you only need 50 each and you don't actually need to max out the luck. Or perhaps the luck drops are actually more common than you think and you'd much rather use those instead of feeding in an extra 26 Legend dupes or 36 total copies to max the luck stat. In the long term I doubt you'd want to feed dupes purely for luck.
You also just got 600/800 extra box space for free, you don't need to feed them to free up box space.

OK now that that's out of the way, IMO the ideal candidates to invest in for co-op captains are:
Of course do not actually invest in anyone yet until the game mode drops.

2024.04.24 01:17 Blue_Pickle_57 Resting before a race

I’m currently training for a 50k at the end of June and I’ve been running all winter and putting in lots of miles. My weeks are now 40-50 miles and my “rest” weeks are about 30-35. I’ve started to get a bit of runners knee in my left knee, to the point where it’s impacting my gait and ability to run uphill. I’m going to PT for it, but still maintaining / increasing my mileage. My question is - would I be dooming myself if I take 1-2 weeks off and rest it with no running (maybe some walking)? I’m not trying to win any medals in my race, but it’s 10k of vert and known as a very tough race, so I just want to finish, preferably without my knee impacting my ability to do so.
Bonus point question: as I type this I’m thinking that maybe my mileage is crazy high for a ~30 mile race that is 2 months out. Thought?

40 2:49:09
42.2 2:58:03

Context

It all started pretty much after my Bilbao marathon, post - here After finishing and not achieving Sub3 a friend wrote to me about Zurich marathon saying that it is flat as a mirror. This marathon was exactly 6 months from Bilbao. So I considered it. A week later the friend ran Frankfurt marathon with the same goal of Sub3 and missing it by 28 seconds, so with that it was clear that I am going to visit him in Zurich and both of us will run the marathon and try to get each other across the finish line under 3 hours.

Training

The training process didn't build confidence, most of the time I was doubting if I will be able to do it. The whole time I've been running 5x a week, with Wednesdays being group trainings.
So, about a week or two after Bilbao I wrote to my coach and said that I could go out for a run, he said it might be too early, but gave an easy run which felt far too difficult (more on the tempo run side). And that feeling stayed with me for the next two or three weeks on every run. Coach told me to go give blood analysis which came back excellent. Now, since everything was okay under the hood, we kept training and working even though the paces weren't the same as they were prior to Bilbao, even my VO2 Max kept dropping from 67 to lowest point of 63 over the 3 months with January hitting the lowest point. While this downfall is happening, I tried telling myself that it is winter outside, its expected that I won't be able to go as fast as I did, but this was killing the confidence and it all felt different, not sure how to describe it, but I felt weaker in general and winter didn't have anything to do with it even though I tried telling myself its okay.
On January 30th for the first time my watch told me that I was being Productive and gave a bit of confidence boost. And it was a bit less then 3 months left to Zurich, so I thought this is a good sign, some light at the end of a tunnel. The following month the load stayed the same, ran 267km in total. But with March I did 392.66km with the first time almost hitting 100km per week. Training did take a lot of time with spending 7-8h running per week. But I stayed consistent, trusted the coach and tried ignoring my negative thoughts. During March and April we changed the training plan a bit. Usually I had Mondays and Fridays off, now it was Mondays and Thursdays off.
Week Distance Time
Feb 26-Mar 3 75.6km 6h3min
Mar 4-10 87.1km 7h44min
Mar 11-17 97.5km 8h
Mar 18-24 76.8km 6h31min
Mar 25-31 78.5km 7h13min
Apr 1-7 97.4km 7h54min
Apr 8-14 84.2km 7h7min
As the race week arrived, I was confused, from one side I've done the work, I've had huge load compared to previous years or preparations. From the other side I didn't feel as if I would be on the same level as I was for Bilbao and if I wasn't able to run there sub 3 how am I supposed to do it now in Zurich...
Some other preparation was on the nutrition/fueling side. The friend asked to get Maurten Marathon set. I asked him about it and he showed their fueling suggestion so I got one set for myself as well.

Pre-race

I had my flight on Thursday 18th April evening. On Friday the friend gave me his car and sent to a nearby city to take my mind off the race. The whole time walking around the city I was conscious if I am not walking too much, wouldn't want to put too much stress on my legs just before the race and have a question linger if the sight seeing was the reason I wasn't able to reach the goal. On Saturday we had a 40min easy warm-up run in the morning and then we went into the city after the bibs and walked around the city a bit and some pasta for lunch. The whole time thinking and talking about the race, with few other topics here and there... As evening came stress was build up, now up to this point the friend was stoic, but now he was also worried. We had to do some carbo loading and drink a Maurten drink mix. I eat under stress so it was easier for me, the friend was opposite, he forced himself to eat. Whilst we were eating, both were soothing ourselves trying to calm down saying things like "the work is done", "we can't change anything", "no matter what, I am going all in, if I fail, I fail...", "if the weather is bad, I will just enjoy the run". The evening passed and we had done all the prep and went off to bed.

Race

Alarm went off at 6:00, we had to have another Maurten drink mix. Friend just had a banana, but I had a double porridge bowl and coffee. Afterwards felt a bit full, but though okay, there is still 1.5h until the start, thought it will be okay. A bit after 7:00 we arrive at the start, bag drop off is 1.5km from start so we walk there and drop the bags off. The weather seems a bit cold, but okay, happy that there wasn't wind. We drop off the bags and do a small warm-up on the way to starting line. 7:58 we both are in the starting corridor, about 3 meters behind the 3:00h pacers. 7:59 we wish each other luck. 8:00 start
First kilometers didn't build confidence - the stomach still felt full, but not unbearable, the abs felt like pulling/cramping and hamstrings felt tired already. For the next five-ish kilometers I was switching between thinking about these things and just looking where are the pacers and forgetting about my feelings and thoughts.
We had two pacers, I decided to go with the one that was a bit ahead, since I though I'd rather have a faster finish then risk maybe a slower pacer and barely getting a sub3 if that is the case. My friend stayed with the other pacer.
The other 5km went through the city, nothing too interesting just trying to settle in.
With the 10th km we went on to the long stretch running next 14km next to the lake. The feeling in the stomach and hamstrings was still there, but everything was fine. By this point the runners where already spread out and settled into their paces.
We kept running, stayed with the Maurten plan and having a gel every 6 kilometers. Nutrition stations where frequent as well.
Reached Half-Marathon point, all went well, but from this point I started comparing myself to how I felt in Bilbao and expected the same outcome, since the first half is easy. We still had 3km till the turning point and pace wasn't changing which was a good sign, but I constantly though this is a trap.
We reach the turning point, it has a small uphill, I slow down a bit on my way up. My friend runs next to my shoulder and say "come on, let go", I stick with him, this is also the point where we need to take 4th gel, he goes for the Coffee gel and with 25th km he opens up, thinks it is second-wind and starts talking to a lot of people from our 3h group. I kept to myself not saying a word just using my hands to talk, since I didn't want to mess up my breathing and put unnecessary stress and risk failing faster. The thoughts also went to Bilbao and though how I felt, I realized I feel better then I did there, but still not having confidence that I will go all the way, since the hardest part is still ahead. Few kilometers later my mate says he is feeling great as well and thinks he could push faster, but holds himself back.
Comes 30th km my first coffee gel, at this some confidence that I will do it comes up, legs feel good compared to Bilbaos 30th km, but there still is a bit less then 1h to go, it all still can go sideways. I tell myself to stick with the group until 38th km when we are back in the city and then push if there is anything in the tank. Around this time weather got worse, some stronger rain started, but luckily for a brief moment, by 35th km it was gone.
We're at 36th km and I am full of confidence that I got this. I take my last gel, run through the nutrition station and with 36.5km I pick up the pace to around 4:00/km. Few meter ahead of the group I look back to see if my friend also picked up the pace, but he didn't. I am catching up with other runners, I am passing them and feeling great. There is now some more headwind since I don't have people in front, but that is not bothering me.
I get in the city, still holding the pace.
Around 40th km I start to get emotional, I know that even if I break down now, I got this I will have a sub3 marathon. I hold the emotions back and continue running. 41st km is my fastest at 3:55/km Last km I just enjoy it, I feel great, thinking I didn't have to encourage myself a single time this race, I felt strong and it wasn't a torture, I am smiling.
Finish, I jump up and hit my heels together its 2:58:04 on my watch when I stop it. I am happy. (later I see that I did negative splits first half 1:29:09, second 1:28:54)
I step to the side and look at the people who are coming and the clock. Few seconds later I see my friend, the clock is still in 2:58. I get even happier. He crosses at 2:58:47, I rush to him and we congratulate each other on the achievement.

Post-race

In the finishing zone we got the foil blankets and our medals. As we leave the finishing zone, the friend meets his wife and lets his emotions go, I get a bit emotional one the side as well, but held it together. I see that my friend is relieved, I am smiling, we're all having a good time and slowly moving towards the bag drop-off zone. But then it started raining cats and dogs, the blankets was just a slight protection. We are just happy that we don't have to run in this weather, since the Half Marathon runners just went in and there are still a good amount of people running the Marathon.
We get our bags, friends changes in a toilet, but I though I will wait until we are somewhere with a roof and a heater. But shortly after in recovery tent I change as well. Got my phone as well and the rain had stopped, I call my wife and as I call emotions take me over, she picks up and I can't say a single word. With a cry-e voice I say hi, she asks me something, but I can't reply, fighting the urge to break down, thinking if I let go, I won't be able to stop and talk. I squeeze out few cry-e words and I am able to talk for a bit but being on the edge. We talk for a bit, but then I wasn't able to feel medal around my neck, I might have left it in the recovery tent, I say good-bye and rush to my friend to say I lost my medal, but luckily I had just put it my bag.
We walk to pasta place for some beer and pizza and celebrate, beer tasted excellent. We were receiving from our club members on our achievements and it was just euphoric.
Best part was that we weren't getting any cramps, we were able to walk normally.
The next day the same, walking wasn't a problem, the legs just felt like they had a harder workout not the zombie legs that I was used to after each marathon.

Afterthough

On Monday evening I returned, finally seeing my wife and being able to hug her. This whole time I can't stop smiling, even now walking the dog I realized how lite I felt, how energized.
This marathon was my 4th try to go sub 3 and I finally got there. And the whole thing is more enjoyable that I did it with a close friend, I felt lite and strong. I haven't felt this great after a marathon since my first marathon which was in 2018.

Training

Winter training in Toronto - Pfitzinger 12 week schedule 55-70 miles/week (88km - 113 km).
Started in January - was running around 65km/week from October to Dec, but not really focusing on any zone.
Initially had the very ambitious (foolish) goal of running sub 2:50, which I quickly learned would be unrealistic (I hadn't raced since my qualifying time in Toronto in October 2022).
The winter training was rough, and very windy. In the average Canadian winter I run maybe 30km a week (tops), so pushing myself to run more was hard -- especially when the daylight hours were so short. Fortunately, a friend kept me company on some of my longs runs by cycling next to me along the Toronto waterfront trail offering banter, support, water and gels as needed. He was my "coach" and it was lovely. Also: there was very little snow in Toronto this winter which definitely helped me train smarter.
In March I injured/bruised my left knee playing squash and had about three weeks where I wasn't able to run very much (maybe 40km/week or roughly 24mi/week) for these three weeks, and had to run much slower in the miles I did run.
I didn't really actually look at the course terrain until about March which is when I started driving to a little bit to start my runs on a downhill and end them in an uphill. I wish I'd started hill training sooner.

Pre-race

A couple days on tapering in Boston (arrived Thursday from Toronto). New shoes, felt great. The Expo was a zoo but had some cool historic memorabilia... and a lot of makeup application stations and... a booth to buy roofing? WTF?
Attempted earlier nights sleep (10:30PM instead of my usual 12:00AM+). Minimized walking around Boston as that was recommended in a post I made about "What surprised you about the Boston Marathon the first time you ran it?". Didn't run at all on Sunday. Went to bed at around 09:30 Sunday night, and took two night-time flu pills to help me sleep deeply.
Woke up around 5:30, felt well rested. Ate a banana, a couple pieces of toast, some coffee, drank some water. Probably some other food I can't remember. Because of good intel I gathered from my post, I knew there would be multiple places to pee, so I drank a fair amount of water and gatorade in the 3 hour lead up to the start.
Arrived at Boston Common a little later than I'd anticipated to catch the bus to Hopkinton (I was in Wave 1 which called for bus loading at 6:45AM). Dropped off my bag, and said goodbye to my fiancée. Met a lovely man on from Mexico on the bus named René.

Race

While yes, there were many many porta potties near the start line, many many people also needed to pee. I didn't want to miss my start time and was starting to panic. Saw that the lines got much shorter the deeper I went in and was luckily okay.
Marched quickly over to my corral just in time for the National Anthem (y'all Americans have such an epic anthem -- I'm jealous). I had a gel and then just... started running. It just sort of happened. Thrilling!
KM 1 - 10
Mostly downhill, felt really good. On the advice of more experienced runners, I was careful to hold back and not get too excited. I really wanted the future me to be grateful to past me for not going too hot out the gate. I had one marathon in Ottawa that was similarly hot and I got excited early on and bonked hard and I was determined to not let that happen again.
These first kilometers felt great, and the crowds were of course incredible (and inedible). I was surprised at how many smaller hills there were even early on. There were so many hills! Second GU gel at 7.5km.
KM 11-20
Still feeling really good. Hit the half marathon distance at ~1:27. Was beginning to accept that running a PR was unlikely since I knew the second half was the real challenge. I was sure to take Gatorade and water at every station -- if I could I'd try for a second water for my head. I splashed my face with my first extra water like a dumb idiot and it of course gucked up my glasses with sunscreen and sweat. Dumb. Dumb George Michael.
Third gel at around 14km.
KM 21-30 - The Wellesley College Scream Tunnel and Newton Hills.
I'm giving as many high fives as I can at this point. I'm trying to let the crowd help carry me. It's getting really hot, and I'm starting to get tired.
Fourth gel around 21km.
As I ran what I now now as the third Newton Hill, I mistakenly thought it was Heartbreak. It was just so big. I realized about 2/3 up it that it was not as there were no people holding signs indicating such, and my family wasn't there (they said they'd cheer from Heartbreak Hill but I figured I could have just missed them). I went fairly fast up this third hill.
Fifth gel at around 28km.
KM 31-37 - Heartbreak Hill
Saw my folks at Heartbreak with an old sign from my first Marathon ten years ago. It was really sweet. I was nearly 2/3 up the hill when I hear my brother calling out to me and trying to match my pace on the sidewalk. I felt supported.
I climbed it pretty quickly, I think (AVG pace 4:39/km over 1.2 km). Felt pretty good on the downhill, although the sun was really heating things up and by this point the shadows were much shorter and harder to find. I was starting to feel gassed
Sixth gel around 33km.
KM 38 - 42.0
Checking my watch I see that I'll be damned close to running sub-3. I give it my all for these final kilometers. I'm totally gassed, and my legs are burning. I push, look at my watch, and I'm not moving any faster. My legs just can't go and it's maddening. I see the Citgo sign, and know I'm close to the end. I really want to finish strong and in under 3 hours.
I see my fiancée cheering just before the bridge and feel a surge of love, but my legs can't go faster.
Seventh gel around 38km? I can't remember.
FINISH 42.2 KM
I turn left onto Boylston Street thinking the finish will be right there, but it does that dolly zoom shot film thing you see in movies just stretches back. It's not "right there". The distance, though short, is very far away for these poor legs. I push as hard as I can - my breathing gets really fucking weird and I've never breathed like this before. My pulse shoots up to 178 bpm and I'm barely running faster.
I cross the finish with a time of 03:00:23.
Ouch ouch ouch. This is my best run so far, despite not being a PR. I feel very good about it and incredibly frustrated at the time.

Post-race

Ouch. Puttered over to the Sam Adam's taproom near the market before going to the Post Race Party near City Hall. I don't recommend the post race party - it's kinda lame (although they DICK's engraved your medal free of charge if you lined up for it).
Several people at the part have the mochi-donut/teething-ring-toy medal indicating that they've run all 6 major marathons. It leaves me inspired to run the others!
The Big Ouch lasts until Thursday which is when my legs finally started feeling a bit better.

Overall

10/10 would recommend. It is a glorious race, with motivating crowds. Super challenging, but also super well organized, and fun.
^ As you probably know. ^
I'll keep this first Boston close to my heart and learn from it.
Made with a new race report generator created by herumph.

Indian Team in the 2025 Asian Winter Games?
The next Asian Winter Games will be held in Harbin, China next year and we need start fighting to IOA (Indian Olympic Association) to send our Ice Hockey Teams, both men’s and women’s to the Games. The IOA is notorious for stopping the Football and Water Polo teams from participating in the Asian Games earlier, without understanding the value of the exposure our players can get. We need to send our full fledged team, no matter if don’t win a medal or not. And this goes to every single winter sport like skiing, Curling, Skating. We need to start preparations now it self if we need to show a good fighting in the games. We haven’t taken part in any IIHF competitions nor any development cups this year (Only the Women’s team did). We need to organise some friendlies and hire a good coach who can try helping our players from the technical and creative side of things.
If we want to see our Ice Hockey teams perform next year, this is the right time to pressurise the IOA and Sports Ministry!

Apologies for the novel ahead - I've never written a race report, but I wanted to get this written down as a reminder to myself of what not to do in the future.

Boston Background

I'm a relative newbie when it comes to the marathon. In high school and college I was a 400m hurdler, occasionally doing an 800. Before junior year in college, I started running more distance on the roads and enjoyed it, but struggled with various injuries (mostly calf and achilles issues). Post-college I continued to dabble in some road races, inconsistent training, and fairly consistent injuries. Hopped on the barefoot/Vibram bandwagon back in 2010-2012ish, during which time I strung together some consistent training and races without injury, especially enjoying trail races.
In 2016, on a whim, I entered the Maine Marathon the Friday before the race, with very little mileage under my belt that summer, other than some trail runs between 10-15 miles. Not knowing what to expect, I started conservatively, and with some cool weather and light rain that morning, I managed to finish in 2:47:xx, which qualified me for Boston 2018.
In 2017, I did the Maine Marathon again, this time after having spent a good portion of the summer and fall running up and down 4000+ ft mountains in New Hampshire. I figured this would prepare me well for the marathon, but I definitely didn't do any marathon specific training. I went out way too fast (hit 10 miles in under an hour), and quit at mile 16. In hindsight, there was nothing in my training that indicated I was ready to go that fast; honestly, I have no idea what I was thinking. I did come away from that race telling myself I would never pull out of a race again. That feeling sucked.
I ran Boston in 2018. My training leading up to it was decent, though mileage probably didn't get above 70 mpw at any point. I do remember doing a lot of hill running, but nothing crazy. I tend to run well in cold and rain, and that year Boston delivered. My pace was ambitious (~6:00 pace until about mile 16), then gradually slowed to ~7:30 by the end, finishing in 2:46:55. I don't remember much from that race, but I do remember being so cold that my legs felt like they were on autopilot. And my hands were so cold that I couldn't open gel packets, so I only took water and gatorade when I remembered to.

Training

After running a PR at the Maine Marathon last year (2:44:25) on a fairly abbreviated stretch of training last summer (peaking at just under 75 miles in early September), I decided I would do two things in preparation for Boston:
  1. Increase my weekly mileage throughout the late fall and winter
  2. Follow an actual training plan as much as possible.
  3. Run in "modern" shoes. Last fall I ran my PR in Saucony Ride 15s. I figured I left several minutes on the table doing that, so I resolved to get some training in with something faster.
Since the beginning of November, my weekly mileage was as follows:
61, 70, 75, 90, 91, 90, 88, 83, 91, 96, 96, 86, 85, 67, 99, 100, 104, 90, 90, 88, 80, 60, 53
For a training plan, I used Daniels 2Q 71-85 mpw. However, during the month of January I pretty much only did the Q2 workouts because my oldest kid was taking ski lessons on Sundays, and it was impossible to find any other time during the week to get in the Q1 workouts. So I figured keeping the consistent mileage was worth more than risking injury by squeezing workouts in. I had some solid workouts that seemed to indicate I was capable of maintaining 6:00 pace for the marathon, so I optimistically set my goal there.
For shoes, after some experimentation, I ended up choosing some Adios Pro 3s. They seem to work with my biomechanics - however, I'll note that I still haven't quite mastered how to run in super shoes. For some reason, my quads always seem to tire more quickly with them. I can't tell if it's because it's harder to reign myself in at the beginning of runs, or if I'm overstriding, or something else. But I had a couple magical runs in the AP3s so they seemed like a safe bet.
Approaching the race, I already knew I had some weaknesses, but I wasn't sure how much they would affect my race:

Pre-race

Travelled down to Boston with some family who were running, picked up my number, hit the expo quickly, walked down to the finish line, then we drove out to Needham to stay with family for the night. My stomach had felt off for at least a few days before Sunday, so I had been trying to increase my carbohydrate percentage over that time but probably wasn't where I needed to be calorie-wise. I don't if it was nerves or a stomach bug of some sort. I had also fought off the latest preschool cold the week before, and was still struggling with the post-cold symptoms the week leading up to the race, so I'm sure that didn't help. Tried to eat a mostly carb meal for dinner, but my stomach still wasn't feeling right. Managed to get a decent 6ish hours of sleep the night before, but just wasn't feeling tired.
We got a ride to Hopkinton State Park in the morning, where we caught a bus to town. We got there around 9:20. Proceeded to walk up the left-hand side of the street along the corrals, and then realized I couldn't enter from that side, so I had to walk down to the intersection, back up the street, then hang a 180 to join the flow of Wave 1 runners to get to my corral. No biggie, but definitely not expected. I had brought a ziploc bag with four Salt tabs; I took one of them once I got into my corral.

Race

I remember thinking before the start, this was the first time in a while that I've really felt the sun's heat since the fall. That should have been a warning sign, but I ignored it. Granted, I pretty much ignored all of the weaknesses I mentioned above. The start felt super slow, clipping my stride constantly to avoid tripping other people. For the first three miles I felt like I was holding back, yet I was below 5:50 pace for miles 2 and 3 and just couldn't (or perhaps stubbornly wounldn't allow myself to) get above 6:00 pace. Looking back, this was obviously my biggest mistake - not only was I not respecting the course, but also not respecting the conditions.
By 10k my quads were already feeling heavy. I didn't realize it at the time but by this point my heart rate had been at or above 180 for the last 5 miles, and remained above 180 until about mile 11 when the wheels came off. I think when I saw the 10 mile split (59:10) I realized how deep a hole I had dug myself, and this was going to be a tough 16 miles, if I had it in me at all.
Between mile 10 and 14, my pace dropped from low 6:xx to low 7:xx, more or less felt like I was jogging, but couldn't will my legs to go any faster. I was also struggling through some stomach cramps, likely from all the fluids I had taken in. Note, at this point I had completely forgotted about the Salt tabs I had brought along. Went through Wellesley and got as many high-fives as I could; the energy sure gave me a boost that lasted for about 10 seconds after the crowds, and deflated pretty quickly. I stopped to walk at the aid station at mile 14; my first of four stops, one at each water station between 14 and 18. Very seriously considered pulling out at that point, and I actually stepped onto the sidewalk and walked for about a minute, drinking some Gatorade and reflecting on my stupidity up to this point. At some point during that minute I decided I was going to finish unless I collapsed, mainly because I had no idea what it would take to get myself to the finish area if I actually did pull out, and secondarily feeling that I might as well enjoy the crowds as much as I could at this point.
So between 14 and 18 I had completely changed my mindset. I jogged as slowly as I had to to keep moving. Walked the aid stations. High-fived everyone I could find. Gave words of encouragement to several runners who were walking or stopped. I convinced one runner in a black singlet, who was walking as I was shuffling past him, to join me. We jogged along together for a while, I never did get his name. Eventually I felt like I was redlining again (probably at 7:30 pace haha) and he left me in the dust.
Funny enough, my pace through the Newton Hills actually improved. Probably from my recovery jogging in the previous miles. I was in such a strange state; I didn't feel like I was redlining, but there was no way my legs would go any faster. Plus I had some wicked stomach cramps. But my leg muscles weren't cramping too badly, so I just kept moving.
The last 6 miles were a blur. Things I remember:
Hereford and Boylston street felt like forever. Crossed the finish. The end (not).

Post-race

For about 5-10 minutes after I was ok. I kept slowly walking, grabbed water, finish bag, medal, etc. Around the spot where there were BAA backdrops where people could take pictures, I started to feel nauseous. Proceeded to vomit behind one of the backdrops. Vomit was the color of the nasty orange freezer pop, and all liquid other than the watermelon and whatever pieces of orange I had eaten on the course. Another runner kindly fetched a BAA volunteer, who loaded me into a wheelchair and whisked me to the med tent. This was about 1:15 PM. At that point my stomach felt better, BAA med volunteers took my vitals, had me lay down, take in some warm broth. That seemed to help a bit, so I tried sitting up, and taking a walk around the tent. Soon after that I started feeling nauseous again, vomited again, laid down again. Attempted to eat a bit of banana. Started feeling better, sat up, didn't even attempt to walk around again and vomited. At this point, they drew my blood in prep for an IV. My sodium was low, so they put me on an IV. A liter of IV fluid later, I felt 90% better, had some salty chips, managed to sit up, walk around the tent, and they released me soon after. I was in the med tent for a little over two hours.
Eventually managed to find my support crew and we got out of the city around 4:45 PM. Ice water, cold beer, and pizza were amazing for dinner. Got home around 9:30 PM, crashed soon after. I'm amazed at how little soreness I have in my legs. Calves aren't sore at all, quads are sore but I can move up and down stairs without trouble. I think it's a combination of being reduced to a jog for more than half the marathon, and the IV I received afterward. Regardless, LOTS of lessons were learned this time around. Still working on some answers to some other things (nutrition, shoes, heat acclimation).

2024.04.17 16:02 _Exegy_ 2025 4CC in Seoul rescheduled to February 18-23

https://isu.org/isu-news/news/145-news/15002-rescheduling-of-isu-four-continents-figure-skating-championships-2025?templateParam=15
"The International Skating Union (ISU) announces a modification to the dates of the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships 2025 scheduled to be held in Seoul (KOR). Responding to a request from the Korean Skating Union (KSU), the ISU Council has approved the rescheduling of the Championships to February 18-23, 2025."
The previous date range was February 4-9. The move could be due to the Asian Winter Games being scheduled February 7-14. South Korean men who win gold medals at Asian Games earn an exemption from military service.
A possible consequence of the rescheduling is that it may make 4CC an easier turnaround for US skaters, who typically perform at Nationals toward the end of January in a non-Olympic year.

Training

I live in NYC (31M). I was big into cycling last summer but when temperatures got too cold, I switched to running. I had already been running 1-2 times per week but very short distances (3-5 mi) with no real plan. In the fall, I decided to run a marathon given I had 4-5 months to prepare. I got into the Boston Marathon by running for a charity. I had never run a race before. I get lots of running injuries anytime I try to increase volume so my biggest worry was staying injury-free. I dedicated lots of time to strengthening, stretching, mobility, and plyometrics to make sure my legs could handle training.
I followed Hal Higdon's 3-day a week plan with some modifications -- most notably, cut from three 20 mile long runs to just one. Overall the Higdon plan is 5 workouts per week (3x running, 2x cross). I also kept my normal lifting schedule (bodybuilding-focused) of 4x/week so it was a lot of work on my body but I tried to make it work. About halfway into the plan I got shin splints. I saw a PT who helped me change my foot strike. It fixed my shin splints but ended up causing runner's knee. I was able to solve that with strength and plyometrics.
Running through the NYC winter sucked, especially since I run first thing in the morning when temps are coldest, but I didn't skip any workouts. Discipline > motivation.
My easy pace is around 10:30-11min/mile so was shooting for a 4:30hr goal time.

Pre-race

Got into Boston on Saturday -- an easy train ride up from NYC. Ate lots of carbs (Chicken Yaki Udon, Pad Thai, Spaghetti, Bagels).
Morning of the race was my biggest concern. I usually run fasted without caffeine at 6am, but since the start time is 11:15am I knew I would have to have both food and caffeine to make it through the day. For breakfast, I had coffee with a bagel with peanut butter and banana with some electrolytes. I also ate a Clif Bar about an hour before the race.
The buses dropped me off in Athlete's Village at 10:25am. I thought I would have lots of time to warm up and get changed but they called my wave at 10:40am, just 15 mins later. All I had time to do was go to the bathroom and change my shoes and do some light active mobility. I felt rushed and wasn't mentally prepared. It was a 0.7 mile walk to the start line where I was really nervous as it was my first RACE not even just first marathon. I had no idea what to expect. My heart was racing while standing in the corall with 5 mins to go.

Race

My gameplan was to break up the race into three chunks. Miles 1-10: run easy and treat it as an extended warmup. Miles 11 - 21: use my fitness I developed in training to pick up the pace slightly and make it through Newton Hills. Miles 21+: give it all I have left with my heart.
In reality, this all went out the window.
Here are the challenges I faced immediately out of the gate:
The first challenge was the heat. It was 70 degrees and sunny. I had done all my training under 40 degrees so I was not used to this at all. Out of the gate, I felt dizzy and was worried I would develop more serious heat exhaustion.
The second challenge was food. I was nauseous from the start since my stomach wasn’t used to all this food before running.
The third challenge was how crowded it was. I was in the last wave so lots of slower runners so the entire first 2-3 miles was just weaving around and through people and trying to find some open space to run in a straight line. I wasted so much energy.
The fourth challenge was water. I usually run with a running vest and sip pretty often, a few times every mile. I wasn’t used to only having a tiny cup of water once every mile. My mouth was dry and I was dying for more water.
By mile 5, I was already gassed. I realized I had gone out way too fast and there was no way I could hold this pace for the race so I would need to slow down. I was planning on running 10 min/mile for the first 10 miles but I looked at my watch and my average pace was already like 9 min/mile. This is really fast to me and I was freaking out what to do. I knew I had to slow down.
Miles 5 - 10: I felt less nauseous and better with the heat. I actually felt good but had trouble slowing down with all the energy from the crowds. There weren’t really any hills here and so I was cruising along at ~8:45min/mi pace. It was still hard but I was just trying to get to mile 10 where I had planned to put in my headphones and listen to music to give myself a boost.
Miles 10-13: I put in headphones and turned on some music. I’m starting to struggle but told myself I just need to get to halfway. ~8:30min/mi pace. This is basically threshold for me. I usually do my interval runs at this pace.
Miles 13-16: Just holding steady awaiting the Newton Hills. Somehow going even faster I don’t even know how. ~8:15min/mi pace.
Miles 16-21: Dear lord what the fuck.. The hills are way bigger than I imagined. I’m do my training in Central Park in NYC so figured they would be similar to that but I was wrong, they seemed much longer. My legs start cramping. My inner thigh, quads, and calves are spasming. I knew that if I stop or walk, my race is going to be over. I don’t think I’d be able to get my legs working again so I just run through all the pain. I’m downing salt pills and taking an extra gel here to make sure I am getting enough fuel. I start taking Gatordade and Water at the aid stations. It feels like I’m going at 15 min/mi pace but somehow my watch is telling me ~9 min/mi.
Miles 21-25: It somehow gets even worse. I only have ~5 miles left but I know there is no way my legs will hold on for another ~45 mins. It will only take 1 really bad cramp to just completely derail me and force me to walk. I’m downing gels and salt pills. I’m gritting my teeth. My legs feel detached from my body. Every time my foot slams the pavement I feel my muscles spasm. Everything is tight. I’m weaving through a sea of people walking and limping like I’m in a zombie movie. I wouldn’t wish this feeling on my worst enemy. I tell myself that this is what I asked for and these 5 miles are what the last 6 months have been about. Holding on for dear life at 9:30 min/mi.
Mile 26: With only 1 mile to go, I felt much better. I knew it was only going to be ~10 mins more of pain and the crowds were getting so loud. Once I could see the finish line it was way easier.
I look at my watch and somehow see my finish time starts with a “3”. I’m blown away. Every race predictor and calculator I used online told me to shoot for a 4:30. I even made a reddit post a few weeks ago asking my goal pace and was told a 4:20-4:30 is where I should be targeting. I smashed that by like 30 minutes.
This was the hardest thing I’ve done in my life. I gave it everything I had and couldn't have gone a second faster. I left it all out there and was ready to die on the course in that last 10k. This was a 4 hour battle of dehydration, nausea, cramping, heat, weaving through crowds, downhills, and uphills.

Post-race

The sense of accomplishment was overwhelming. I felt like crying honestly. I waddled through with the other finishers to get some water, pick up my medal, and find my gf. We grabbed some Shake Shack and hop on the Amtrak back to NYC.

2024.04.17 03:45 Wh1zkeyW1zard The Obelisk (A Dream Story)

Hello Jesse, Alex, & Mathas, & Possible Guest(s),
First of all, big fan of all of you, I have been watching Jesse however the longest, since the RPGMaker days I believe. Allow me to first start this off by letting you know that it is perfectly okay to tell this story on the podcast, and second allow me to do what I've been taught to do through jesses ending credits on many a video which is "advertise like a shameless whore", I am making this dream into a game called Obelisk and you can look at some of the art on my Reddit account and I will also be putting links to my other socials at the end of the post so please take a look at them! and without further ado let me begin. This dream came to me unsurprisingly after watching a documentary about the Kola Superdeep Borehole for a little backstory I am a massive Lovecraft fan and a massive history fan so I'm sure you can already kinda guess where this story is going, at least to some degree. In this dream, I awaken out of a smallish bed in an older creeky wood and stone house on the outskirts of some town(not sure where, but I see red flags and I could see other buildings in the distance), and beyond that a dark lush forest. I get up and stretch with some tightness that doesn't go away after stretching, I then look into a mirror above an old dresser( the type with the mirror built-in) and I am not myself I am an older (probably in my late 50s, early 60s) more Eastern European man with salt and pepper hair and a more salt than pepper beard and as I turn and look at the bed I see two depressions and I then realize that my wife isn't there but I don't seem surprised about it, I then walk downstairs and I seem to be expecting something and I am not sure what but as I reach the bottom and look at the front door and in particular the letter slot on the door and then onto the ground below it, my heart sinks. It seemed I was expecting something which did not arrive I then continued into the kitchen to make something to eat (something with bread and cheese and meat and eggs) and some hot drink( I assume to be coffee ) and I sat at a small round table which is in front of a window with a view to the outside I can now tell that it is early in the morning the sun has barely started to rise and in the far distance, I see dark clouds. As I look around the house I see photos and papers and medals all framed some of which I can sorta recognize and some having a soviet union emblem on them and then an abrupt noise suddenly makes me snap my head forward and I feel excited. I get up and run to the door and there is no one there but there is a newspaper on the ground and on it is writing that made no sense to me. Though it looked vaguely like Cyrillic and under the newspaper was a letter and though I had no idea what the letter said I got upset once I had read it and I sprinted upstairs and changed into winter clothes and grabbed my keys and got into a small truck and drove off then my dream skips. I am suddenly driving in a snowstorm, this had not become a blizzard quite yet but it was getting there and it was getting dark so I assumed I had been driving for a while. Deep dark woods surrounded me, and the old truck I was in didn't have the best headlights so the visibility on the road was pretty terrible all I could see was the snow rushing at the car as I sped along what was a surprisingly well taken care of back road and this continued for a while until it got dark. The snowstorm picked up into a blizzard and there was lightning accompanying it, as I drove along, the truck shook assuming it was from the wind I kept pressing on until a very bright lighting strike right above the truck flashed and with it, a large pale white entity appeared from the darkness and stomped into the middle of the road causing me to swerve to avoid it. I then crashed into a tree and jumped out to look at the being that caused me to crash and it was nowhere to be seen. I somehow knew I was close to my location so, I grabbed a bag out of my car and started walking toward my destination. The blizzard got much worse as I walked and I had to cover my face just to even be able to see a couple of feet in front of me, then suddenly, I saw a wandering light in the distance and it led me to a clearing and there the blizzard calmed yet the wind still screamed, I saw my destination the Kola Superdeep Borehole and as I go to start approaching it I notice that even from a distance it seemed abandoned, now with panic building in me as I walk from the edge of the clearing I notice that the wondering light a bright yellowish colored light, starts to flicker a slickly greyish white and as it does the Kola Facility starts to change with every light flicker and the best way to describe it is it looked like the upside down from stranger things except pale cracked skin with tentacles and mouths and eyes that looked white and messed up like they were blind everywhere and the sky was also a swirling mess of arms and eyes and mouths everything was moving and everything was uniform it terms of the color pallett and where the Kola facility was, was Pitch black obelisk emitting a sickining sound and a pale white light. The sound and the light both kept increasing until it was all I could hear and see and then, I woke up. There was a ringing noise in my ears and I could feel my heartbeat a little, I've had other dreams like this but none that I could remember so vividly.
let me know what y'all think feel free to interpret it and feel free to message me if you have any questions or anything!
Thank you!

2024.04.16 17:37 Harry_Hayfield May I make a series of contributions both before the Games and during the Games?

Namely:
Before the Games: A daily countdown to the Games posting the medals table for the past 31 Olympics of the Modern Era as well as noting the first and last medal to be awarded in each Games and the winner of the Baron du Cobertain award (from it's inception)
Opening Ceremony: A live AMA on the history of opening ceremonies including explainations of the elements in the ceremony as they happen
During the Games: Daily Medal Tally Summaries and Updated Medal Tables
Closing Ceremony: A live AMA on the history of closing ceremonies including explainations of the elements in the ceremony as they happen
And then doing the same for the Paralympics and then repeating said process for every Winter and Summer Games thereafter?

2024.04.16 00:00 AdmiralWacArnold Coastal Delaware Running Festival Marathon Race Report

Name: Coastal Delaware Running Festival Marathon Date: 4/14/2024 Distance: 26.2 Location: Rehoboth, Delaware Time: 2:52:09 Goals 2:50 was my goal time and how I planned my splits. Splits Mile Time 1: 6:22 2: 6:20 3: 6:27 4: 6:18 5: 6:25 6: 6:28 7: 6:30 8: 6:35 9: 6:29 10: 6:39 11: 6:27 12: 6:27 13: 6:24 14: 6:32 15: 6:34 16: 6:34 17: 6:38 18: 6:27 19: 6:30 20: 6:31 21: 6:33 22: 6:39 23: 6:45 24: 6:42 25: 6:39 26: 6:42 26.2:28 Training 32 M, Double shots of Jack Daniels (2Q) for 18 weeks, 100 miles peak weeks. After completing the NYC marathon last year (2:58, Pfitz 18/85) I knew I needed to shave off serval more minutes to have a shot of making the 2025 Boston cut. I took 5 days off completely and started easing back into running. I targeted the Cheap Marathon as my goal race seeing the very gradual rolling hills and time trial start as a good race to PR. I wanted to bump up my milage from Pfitz, but wanted more flexibility in my plan so I chose Jack Daniels 2Q for this training cycle. The first few weeks kicked my butt as the Q sessions felt tougher than most Pfitz workouts and I was running my E miles on fairly hilly routes. I started to burnout a bit so I took the first "bolded" workout as an E day and started running most of my E days on much flatter routes. After about 6 or 7 weeks into the 2Q plan I adapted and was able to execute the workouts. My milage was taking up and I hit my first 100 mile week. I completed most of my Q sessions on the local greenway to avoid street traffic, unless it was really rainy where to Greenway floods out and I run in the hillier parts of town. I enjoyed the flexibility of Daniels program as I could fit E miles to my schedule. I doubled most Sunday, Mondays and Fridays when I was around peak milage. A week out from Cheap Marathon the weather forecast called for a Spring Nor'easter. The snow from the storm ended up cancelling the scheduled race date so I targeted my backup race, the Coastal Delaware Running Festival Marathon, which fell a 8 days after my original target race date. I more or less reset my plan back from the new race date. It was basically an extra week of taper which my legs didn't mind, but did worry me about losing a bit of marathon distance since it pushed me further away from my last few longer runs, 18+ miles. Race The weather for the race was quite good, starting around 50°F considering how windy it was the day before and later that afternoon, so I appreciated the 7 AM start time. I arrived at the boardwalk which is where the start and finish line was about an hour before the start. I used the restroom a final time, laced up my race shoes (Asics Metaspeed Sky Paris), downed a caffeine gel, and jogged towards the start as my warmup. I lined up towards the front since my goal time would have been top 10 in the previous year. The race started promptly on time which is always appreciated. First few miles were on the roads through the beach neighborhood and then headed to the nearby State Park. Once in the park the path became crushed gravel, which I didn't really train on since I planned on running cheap marathon. The surface didn't cause any real issues, but I could feel a tad bit of slippage in my toe off compared to running on pavement. There was a section that ran over elevated boardwalk and the later sections were paved. The views were beautiful in the park, so it made up for the sparse crowd support. The park had a couple very small hills and a few twists and turns that slowed down the pace, but overall a scenic and interesting part of the course. Exiting the park we ran towards Lewes beach on a paved greenway trail that headed dead straight for several miles at a time. At Lewes Beach we had an out and back that ran parallel to the coast during which the course hit the halfway point. Leaving Lewes we transitioned to running on the road, crossed a bridge which was the last real hill, and faced a decent headwind but thankfully it was not too bad. Aid stations were spaced about every 2 miles stocked with water and Gatorade. There were a couple with gels, but I carried all of my own nutrition so I only grabbed wateGatorade. I took a total of 6 SIS beta fuel gels with me on the course, 2 of which we caffeine, every other aid station. The gels always weigh down my shorts in the early parts of the race, but naturally get lighter as I progress. I had a few salt stick tabs too that I took around the halfway point. About mile 18 I was feeling quite full from my nutrition, starting to feel the fatigue, and fell the bright sun as it was warming up a good bit. My training prepared me well though because I had felt quite similarly quite often during my Q sessions during my training, minus the warmth since I trained through the winter. There were several final miles that returned back to crushed gravel. I was worried that now with more tired legs that this could cause me issues. I had my left calf flare up with the warning signs of a cramp. When this would happen I'd ease up for about 10 strides and let my right leg take the lead. Fortunately it never seized up, which had happened twice during my training cycle. The final 2 miles or so of the race returned to pavement thankfully and I focused on holding my pace as best I could and closing out. The last half mile merged with the half marathoners which were running a bit slower so there was some maneuvering required. At that point I was emptying the tank with everything I had just wanting to finish and save every second that I could. I crossed the finish line relieved to be finished! Post-race I was handed a hat, water bottle, and given my finisher medal. I was quite happy with my time In all of my marathons now I usually finish about minutes slower that how I set my splits. my first marathon I was surprised, but there is always some sort of slow down either with aid stations, fatigue, or general race confusion. Hopefully I have enough cushion to get into Boston, but you really never know especially since there have been so many fast times at big races this qualifying period.

2024.04.15 14:40 ZCaesar5639 Inconsistent access to older campaigns

I thought I might go back in time and try to get a few author medals since in the free version, you only have access to the first 10 tracks. Side Note: I once paid for the starter access (old payment of 10€) and had my fun with it. I DID NOT renew the subscription. As I said I only have access to the 10 newest tracks BUT I seemingly have inconsistens access to older campaigns aswell. Spring 2024: first 10 tracks Winter 2024 - Winter 2023: full access to campaigns Fall 2023 - Fall 2021: no access at all Summer 2021 - summer 2020: full access Is this intentional?
