I matched with a girl on this past Friday and we have hit it off. She’s pretty busy so our first date is planned for this upcoming Monday. My question is until then what should I do? Do I try and keep a text conversation going? Should I just check in before the date? Background: I just graduated with my Bachelor’s from Temple University and landed a job in Philly. I also don’t have the option of moving back home, and so I’m stuck with finding a new apartment in Philly. The one I live in now is off Temple University’s campus. I would love to stay here, but my rent is getting a little bit too expensive and so no one wants to move in. I graduated early and so I don’t have any friends I can move in with because they all have places to live already and need to stay near campus. That leaves me needing to live with my boyfriend. We didn’t plan on living with each other for another year or so, but I thought it was better to depend on him to sign a lease with me, split costs, get stuff for the apartment etc. We have been dating for about two years and so we are both feeling pretty ready.
Our situation with finding an apartment: Both of our credit sucks. I’ve had a few emergencies throughout college, where I had to use my credit card and so throughout my college career I’ve only been paying the minimum. On the other hand I just paid off half of it and Capitol One projected my score to be 670 next month. On the other hand my Boyfriend’s credit score is about 580 but improving. He also had to use his credit card a few times when in college, but ended up going to full time trade school and couldn’t work. On the bright side he has a nice paying job that will help him pay it off.
So all and all our credit won’t be approved for an apartment and the co-signer requirements are a little outrageous (some requirements want co-signer to make 6x the rent, and have an excellent credit score). My mom cannot meet this criteria.
We make good enough money to afford about $1700 a month. I have almost a three year rental history with on time payments. And we make about $6k a month combined. So we are good on the money side but can’t find anyone willing to rent to us even with a co-signer.
We are looking for a 1-2 bedroom, in-unit washer and dryer, cat friendly, and in a somewhat nice area. I don’t have a car so I prefer to be near the BSL or near a reliable bus route. We are primarily looking in the South Philadelphia area because my boyfriend works there and it’s pretty affordable than other places.
Does anyone know of any private landlords that are willing to make things work? Or any other advice?

Looking for opinions: My local dealer has offered me a new 2024 white Si for just below MSRP at $29,500 usd without any incentives. However, they also informed me that they will offer me their first 2025 Si, estimated to be coming in mid August. The GM of this dealer couldn’t provide any further details, other than that there are no new Si allocations for May, June, or July. Features and pricing for the 25’s are also unknown. The next opportunity will be the next model year come August. The civic is due for a mid-cycle refresh in 2025. What would you do? Wait for the 25 not knowing anything about it, or snatch the last newest 24 at this dealer for a great price?

I’ve never been one for job titles. I feel like we custodians all have this in common. I was in a government office setting the first 5 years of my career. They got rid of two custodians at two different buildings and I was part time in public works at the time. I worked on the property maintenace crew for a period so they knew me in the building and managment took a liking to me and offered me the job. 2 buildings was inefficient in my opinion but I made it work. I had two bosses at each building that made my life miserable. I got the chance to go to the library and took it ( great boss there ) They call me a building manager there and I have more responsibility there. My job title is still custodian. This was all fine but I’ve watched so many people get more money I figured why should I settle for just being called a building manager but not get paid for more responsibility. I was so well liked at the government building that part of my job is still going and vacuuming and doing trash in the Managment section of the building every Friday morning even though I was replaced. I had to do this to get to the library which is no big deal. The manager is on his way out and I’d like to take advantage of him knowing my work ethic because I more than likely won’t know the next manager. I had to start writing monthly building reports on what I’ve done. I didn’t like this at first but realized I could use them to my advantage. I’ve made room setup manuals and manuals for how to use the computer for the heat and AC. The bar was low from the guy before me and simple tasks like hanging something were taking forever, half the outside lights not on, nothing getting ordered, or even simple tasks like getting bids not getting done. So everyone is so happy with me. I order, deal with contractors, light electrical, light plumbing, clean carpets and bathrooms, and have a part time helper. I take everything I can off my bosses plate and get things done in a timely transparent fashion. With all this being send I want to ask for a raise and a change in title. I want to suggest a title that’s more fitting. What are some of your titles and the responsibilities that come with that ?

Hey all- hopefully someone knows the answer. About 15 years ago I went to a school in Chicago, then transferred to the same school but a different branch in San Diego. I went for less than a semester. Since then, both schools have closed and merged in to 1 College in San Francisco. I contacted them for my transcript- they have no record of me.
I reached out to CUNY admissions and they told me I would need a “New York State Education Request.” I asked if it was something I could easily find on Google. They said yes. My question is…what are they talking about? I googled it and have no idea what I’m supposed to find. I asked at the time “Is that just a catch-all for any transcripts I might need?” And they said yes. If anyone can point me to the right place I’d appreciate it.

For context I’m 19, at a community college currently looking to transfer to the university of Illinois Champaign my junior year. I’m really at a road block with choosing a major, and I need to start doing classes for my major, which I’m looking at advertising. I’m worried that I will end up working a 9-5, and not making a lot of money. I was originally going to business, but the math and the classes bore me a lot. And I thought advertising could be cool because it’s more about people and can be creative. I’m a really creative person, and love music but I just don’t see any world where I make music as my career and make the income that I would like. I’ve heard a few things about advertising and just want to know if it’s something that I will feel secure in, and something that I could incorporate music or my creativity into. Like working for a label, or advertising tours (which I feel like these jobs are probably luck based). And can I get a high paying job with this? I’m completely willing to do hard work and find experience to build my resume, but is that really hard to do? I guess my biggest question is will it be something I can enjoy? Can I find work that isn’t an office? I’m at a road block so anything really helps.

So apparently when the safety manager and BC does camera audits, basically download footage and make sure seatbelts are on , nothing in hands, driving safely. If they see you talking on EarPods, they will listen to the conversation. Recently we have had some people quit, so they are trying to listen to conversations and see if people are talking about the company, or finding new jobs. So if we are having an intimate conversation with spouse, talking to Drs about private medical things, or even talking to an attorney about anything, they hear it. Was told in the very beginning of camera installation, that no one would ever see the footage unless there was an incident. WTF FedEx!!

I’m antisocial and awkward meeting new people so I’ve never had a girlfriend or sex or anything and it’s not that I’m not up to it it’s just every one has such a big personality and expects a lot. They had been trying to breach the door for over an hour, and really, it hadn’t done much else but annoy everyone involved. If the aliens on the other side of the door had any humor, Carl would have told them that shoving a cactus in their rectums would have been a better use of everyone’s time.
“Of course I would.” The intercom spat out an answer from the not so professional ‘professional negotiator’. Their offers for Carl to open the door had been promises of great wealth, safety, and accommodations. To be clear, Carl did believe the xeno’s offers, its kind were notorious for being devilishly anal about following the letter AND spirit of agreements. If Carl opened the door, he would most likely receive the benefits and live the rest of his life in comfort.
“Would you sacrifice yourself to save a planet of your people?” Carl had walked over, ripped open, and looked through another set of wires as he spoke to the negotiator. He was glad that the room blocked not only the sight of the ugly bastards, but their stench. Before the war, he’d been on one of their stations. Genetic tampering had been rampant in their culture for millenia, and it meant that their appearance had been turned into a fashion of sorts, though a slowly shifting one. It was too bad that they had apparently taken some very, very strange ideals this time around. Abstraction was the name of the game for them, and Picasso would have been proud of what these aliens had made themselves into. Colors, shapes, and even the smell of their bodies were up for fuckery.
“Of course, would you not?” The alien sounded exasperated, and after the roundabouts Carl had spent the first hour talking to them about, it was no surprise. He was pretty sure that he’d spent at least twenty minutes talking about clowns and cocaine. Carl knew that there were only a few more panels where his prize would be waiting inside of. The ‘red wire’ was randomized in every ship. It was crucial, it was very important to the functioning of the reactor, and by extension, the orbital station. Gravity manipulation wasn’t easy. It wasn’t supposed to be easily found by any normal engineer. Its existence was kept down-low and close to heart. People spilled their hearts out over drinks.
“I’d like to think I would, though you never know until the moment arises. How about a continent? Save a few hundred million for your life?” Another panel down, and no wire to be found. A small notion of doubt had entered Carl’s mind by this point, it was pretty unlikely to not have found THE wire yet. Ten panels down, two to go. He spent a small moment playing eeny meeny miny moe between his two choices. The song said ‘right’. His gut told him to break the rule of the song, however, and he started taking the left one apart.
“If I had to.” And there it was. Carl could see that he had been right about the xenos. Little by little, Carl had started to see why this war had begun in the first place, and why these pricks would eventually lose it all. They had none of that go get em attitude to offset their bulging egos. They expected everyone they met to work off of a calculated list of pros and cons. Everything action should be explainable by numbers, logic, and personal gain. Though even they had a small sense of collective good, not much, but a little.
“How about a city, let's say. . . 5 million people?” Carl just wanted to know how the negotiator’s personal scale weighed life. He felt like he was getting real close to the creature’s balance point. He also knew that the negotiator was grasping at straws to get the ‘illogical and unpredictable’ human to open the door for the xenos. If the negotiator was a human, they’d be ordering every type of explosive to blast the door before Carl could finish cooking up his plan. Carl took all the joy he could from the situation. He honestly felt like Bugs Bunny in the moment, the other side was simply so, so fucking dense to his plans. They’d probably hold a wrench for him if he just quickly opened the door and told them to. Fucking xenos.
“Hmmm, I would.” Carl had found the special wire that he’d been searching for. It wasn’t red, but it was as thick as his forearms. He carefully inserted a wire of his own into a joint on the wire, making very sure that it was attached properly. He wanted the following moments to have some theatrical value. Something to really talk about in whatever afterlife there was or wasn’t.
The intercom started buzzing for a moment, but he quickly screamed at the top of his lungs into the transmitter to shut the xeno up before it could start talking again.
Carl had his own monologue to get through while he dragged the massive wire across the room.
“You people work with variables and numbers so much more than we do, you’ve certainly realized that by now. You’ve had to really sweeten the deal you originally offered me and STILL nothing. We must be a very interesting debate subject in your universities. A statistical curiosity that befuddles the known models and expected values.”
“And you really fucked up when you thought we were almost like you. You saw our math, you saw our logical arguments, and you thought us to be mirrors of you. The problem with that is that we sent the people most like you to talk to you. Not a good decision for either of us. Good thing for us is that even our people who most resemble you are still human. They told you to fuck off real fast when you gave them a spreadsheet of expected taxes, exports, and laws. You started the war because we gave you more shit than your asses could handle.”
“AND THEN you tried to handle the war like it was a particularly ornery business meeting. You still are. I have been holed up with the MAIN REACTOR CORE for more than an hour. I have been insulting you, playing dumb, playing smart, and talking about SACRIFICING YOURSELF for most of that time. Why, most humans would have BLOWN UP with rage after all the shit I’ve been pulling. The situation would have gone CRITICAL if you had any sense.”
“It’s like you want this all to come CRASHING DOWN.”
“But hey, don’t worry about that, would you sacrifice yourself out of a personal vendetta against a single individual? No lives saved, nothing particularly impressive gained, really just an all in all stupid thing to do. Would you?” Carl was holding the door open switch in one hand, and the special switch in another. For him the scene would end in what he expected to be a very bright light. But there was a bit of foreplay to be had before going all in.
“No, of course not, that would not be good for anybody.” The slamming on the door started again, it was impressively fast, but still useless. Carl pressed the switch as far as he dared before he felt it teeter on the very, very edge of activation. He smiled and thought of the last good steak he’d had, some months ago now.
“On the contrary my friend, why if you only add spite, revenge, and everything sweet to your little calculations, you’d know that it would be very good indeed.” Carl pressed the door open switch and watched as four shapes crashed through and fell on the floor. A fifth one peeked through the doorway. Carl waved at him with the fun switch.
“My favourite explosives are flashbangs.” Carl twitched his thumb just the tiniest bit, and the reactor started to laugh in response. The reactor’s laugh was very quickly getting louder, so Carl had to yell at the very top of his lungs to get the last part across to the negotiator.
“ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY HAVE A LOT OF BANG IN THEM!!!”
The reactor thought this comment was especially funny, and broke down in laughter.

Hello everyone!
I'm a incoming freshman for Fall 2024 at UC Berkeley, and I've made my schedule plan for my time at Berkeley. I've earned a lot of college credit while in HS, namely I have credit for Math 1A / 1B (AP Exam credit), CS 61A, 61B, 61C, Math 53 and Math 54, Data 8 (the professor said so -- unfortunately articulation is not yet updated on Assist), Physics I, II, and III, and all lower division breadth courses (English 1A / 1B + the two lower division breadths). I also thought I had credit for EECS 16A but unfortunately I would need to take another bridge course for me to get the credit, which would not really make any sense rather than just taking the original course. I've also fulfilled all the American Cultures / History / Institutions Requirements, and I should satisfy the Senior Residence requirement with this plan too.
Here's my tentative schedule:
Summer 2024: EECS 16A, [Ethics Course]
Fall 2024: EECS 16B, CS70, [Upper Division Breadth]
Spring 2025: INFO 159, DATA 100, CS 161 (these are, from what I can discern, the easiest upper division courses for EECS)
Summer 2025: Internship
Fall 2025: CS 168 (Networking / Internet), CS 169, [Upper Division Breadth that also satisfies upper division technical elective requirement].
I picked the 5 easiest upper division courses to minimize stress. My goal would be to get an internship Summer 2025, then a return offer starting in January 2026. I have one prior internship, and I'm working on learning Node JS, React, that kind of stuff, to put projects on my resume, and I'm trying to be consistent on Leetcode. Ideally, if I get an internship in Fall 2024 for Summer 2025, I'll move out from my parents to maybe somewhere cheap like Antioch or Concord and take the train to campus, since unlike for 16B with in-person labs, most likely I'll just have to come for the midterm and final, and perhaps the discussion twice a week. The best case scenario would be getting a remote internship + return offer, which would allow me to escape the rush of the Bay Area and move to somewhere more quaint and rural. Some good remote companies I think are still Atlassian, Dropbox, Affirm, and Coinbase, which were remote before 2020 and are very unlikely to put in RTO mandates.
My motivation for wanting to graduate from college in 1.5 years comes from a desire for financial independence and being able to live alone without roommates, since I'm very introverted. Additionally, one of my biggest regrets has always been not graduating from HS early. One of my teachers even suggested it to me, but I thought I didn't have enough extracurriculars and wouldn't have gotten into MIT / Stanford / Berkeley EECS. Now I realize that prestige in university is essentially meaningless, especially in Computer Science, and giving up a year of my life for simply a chance at an "elite" university was a very poor choice. Since I can't rectify the past, the only solution to achieving financial independence earlier seems to be completing college faster. I'm not at all worried about missing anything social in college, since I'm very much an introvert and wouldn't have taken part it in them anyways, and I'll make plenty of friends (hopefully xd) at my job or, in the case of a remote job, in the new small town I move in.
Sorry for the long post! But what does everyone think about this plan? My thoughts were that I can get an A in EECS 16A over the summer so I have a 4.0 GPA on my resume when I apply for internships in Fall 2024 -- most companies only ask for your transcript after you've been accepted, and I technically didn't lie about anything. I also asked a similar question last year under a different screenname -- so I'm sorry if this reads familar! At that time I didn't know what courses I wanted to take since I wasn't yet admitted to Berkeley.

I'm currently working in a new job that is trying to kick off their observability efforts. Currently, not much to say about their stack. Application-level metrics and logs are both emitted, somewhat bizarrely, to stdout and stderr. There is no orchestration, just a bunch of docker containers and their associated compose files.
Recently, the ask came down to investigate a way to collect these application-level logs and metrics and ship them to influx and a kafka-esque sink. Additionally, container-level host metrics (i.e. docker stats) should also be shipped to that influx sink.
I'm a bit unfamiliar with the space, but I vectored in on Telegraf and Vector. I'd prefer to get away with just using one of them, but here's where I ended up:

• Vector: Able to easily collect stdout/stderr from running docker containers, but non-trivial to collect docker metrics and sink those.
• Telegraf: Able to easily collect docker metrics, but can't seem to figure out collecting stdout/stderr from running containers. It's purpose built as a metrics collector, so I guess this makes sense.

Can I get some feedback on this strategy? Seems a bit convoluted.

New build, specs are below. Keep getting into a boot loop. Computer seems to POST just fine, however sometimes it restarts itself in the BIOS, other times it sits in the BIOS just fine. Whenever I try to boot windows though it restarts itself on initial loading of the files. It has gotten past that part multiple times, however eventually through the windows installation it shuts off. Took it to a PC repair shop and they told me they thought it was the CPU, but I know those are fairly rare to be DOA.

• Everything shows up in the BIOS, so nothing is not being read.
• All the fans and everything start up, LEDs on Ram light up.
• GPU fans all going, monitors display fine.

Things I've tried:

• Reseated the RAM multiple times, swapped which slots they were in. Tried 1 stick for each one.
• Reseated the CPU, double checking no pins were bent or anything.
• Literally took everything out and put it back together again
• Updated BIOS
• Reset CMOS then updated BIOS before launching into windows installation.
• A plethora of other troubleshooting tips. Obviously made sure everything is plugged in and cables are secure in their slots.
• Took it to a PC repair shop and they told me after testing they thought it was the CPU.

So I'm left thinking it can be the CPU, MOBO, or PSU. There is a guy who works out of his house who works on computers I'm taking it to tomorrow after talking to him on the phone for a while, to see what he thinks. Told me he will try to PSU first. I have not taken out the motherboard and tested everything one at a time, so I guess that's maybe what I have to do.
I dont really have another MOBO or CPU to test with, and would rather not buy others if I dont have to, although that could be what i have to do. Everything electrically seems to run fine on the motherboard, but I know its hard to tell, as it could just be for example the CPU not working on it. I'm genuinely perplexed, I feel like I have tried borderline everything.
