2024.05.15 03:22 dojoho Water Filter Options

Hi all, looking for a budget/entry level water filter. Not too budget, I want to be able to rely on it, but it doesn't need to filter lightning fast or anything fancy. So far I'm looking at either the Katadyn gravity BeFree, or the Sawyer Squeeze, since it sounds like I can turn that one into a gravity with the right bags. I'm leaning towards the latter based on research, but I don't have the money for different bags yet and my brother and I will be using this at the end of the month, so I'm hesitant.
That being said, a random question that the internet hasn't been able to answer - while bags are obviously a better option, can I connect a literal milk jug or something to each end and do it that way?

1) Liteway Pyraomm Duo Tarp 2P Pyramid, Stealth Olive (just like MLD Duomid) + Liteway Pyraomm Mesh Half Inner, New (set up only once), $349 (Regularly $475 = Tarp $281 + Inner $194. Equivalent to MLD Duomid Tarp and Solomid XL mesh inner which sell for $470 = $290 + $180). Photos: https://imgur.com/a/Tq5mtRP - Extremely well-made pyramid shelter and generous half mesh inner - use the tarp alone, or the mesh alone on nice nights for stargazing, or both together for an ultralight double wall shelter. Fantastic bomber solo shelter, and the tarp works for two, but I’m always going on trips with my partner and we use a wider inner. Sheds wind far better than double trekking pole shelters. https://liteway.equipment/pyraomm-duo/pyraomm-duo-tarp https://liteway.equipment/pyraomm-duo-half-mesh
2) Hanchor Marl Large Backpack, 19-21 in. Torso, New, $239 (regularly $250 + $20 international shipping. Blows away Hyperlite Mountain Gear packs) - Top backpacking guide and author Andrew Skurka has praised the Hanchor Marl for its excellent construction, strong waterproof materials and light weight and has carried one on many trips. The Hanchor Marl blows away similar volume HMG packs for carrying capability, comfort and construction (incredible stitching), and at a much better price. Aluminum stays can also be shaped to exactly fit the curve of your back. The load lifters work great to keep weight off your shoulders. Bright interior makes it easy to find gear. Convenient hip pockets with waterproof zips. Clean, simple design is a pleasure to use, with everything you need and nothing you don’t. Large size typically fits 19-21 in. torsos (removable aluminum stays are 23.5 in long). Photos: https://imgur.com/a/fxTthYj
3) Ultimate Direction Fastpackher 30L, M/L, New, $139 (regularly $179.95 + tax) - Women's version of the above. Size goes by measurement around the widest part of the chest, the range is 36 in. to 48 in. and the pack is highly adjustable so you can dial it right in. The women's backpanel is only 1/2 in. narrower than the men's, so will fit men too. Just go to this link and click on "Sizing": https://ultimatedirection.com/fastpackher-30-2-0/ Photos: https://imgur.com/a/ZfY5IB4
4) Celestron TrailSeeker ED 8 x 42 Top-Rated Waterproof Binoculars, New, $289 (regularly $379.95 + tax) - Top rated for its class by Cornell Ornithology’s Binocular Buying Guide: “Our overall top pick for image quality and comfort among binoculars under $650.” Ideal for birding, hunting and sporting events. And 8 x 42 is the ideal size for varied light conditions as it gives you much better light gathering and a brighter image than smaller 8 x 25 binoculars. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/news/celestron-trailseeker-ed-8x42-binoculars-our-review/ Photos: https://imgur.com/a/Qda4Pvc
5) Hennessy Hammock 4 Season Expedition with XXL Snake Skins, New, $245 (regularly $309.90 = $289.95 + $19.95 for the XXL Snakeskins). Photos: https://imgur.com/a/LZN8HI8 Not only is the HH Expedition one of the best, most comfortable and durable 4 season hammocks you can get, it’s also popular for summer use in areas of high bug pressure as the double bottom is impervious to the worst mosquitoes (mosquitoes can bite through single layer hammocks). Many militaries rely on HH hammocks for good reason. Comes with attached mosquito netting, detachable Hex rain fly, support ropes, compression sack with set up instructions on back, complimentary standard 42" / 107 cm long "Tree Hugger" webbing straps to protect tree bark, and an oversized open-cell foam pad. HH asymmetrical design is very comfortable compared to more classic hammock designs.
6) Granite Gear Blaze 60L Backpack Women’s Fit, Highly Adjustable Regular Frame (18-21 in. torso), Black, New, only $189 (regularly $299.94 + Tax). Photos: https://imgur.com/a/SF9XV3r One of the most adjustable and comfortable lightweight load haulers. The capacity and generous extendable collar are great for longer trips or trips with heavier gear or a big water carry, yet easily cinch down for shorter trips. Women’s specific fit and frame is highly adjustable (also works great for men with narrower shoulder width). Makes a great winter pack too, with durable material and many lashing points.

2024.05.15 01:47 Competitive_Pen7192 AITAH For thinking my wife is domestically useless?

Firstly I'm happily married and certainly won't be going anywhere in the foreseeable future, plus I've made my peace on the matter but it'll be interesting to see what is said.
In short my wife is domestically useless. She's intelligent and educated but is so bad domestically that it's like having a 3rd child with our two real ones.
Almost anything domestic chore related she either can't do, won't do or does so badly I need to do again anyway. And this was a thing way before we had children. I'll give a short list of them:
She can't pair socks, or do the laundry. As in she loses her own socks then has the cheek to use then lose mine. She can't pair them when they leave the washing machine either. Oh and she won't turn clothes the right way again after they've dried before putting them away.
She can't wash up dishes, to the point where she leaves big grease stains on plates or just leaves pans without attempting to scrub. So I need to step in anyway even if she claims to have done the washing up.
She cannot manage supplies of anything. Toilet roll, she'll use the last one and not replace it, any consumable she'll use up and not say anything about it. As a result I do the shopping all myself and even have to double check her list against our inventory incase I over buy or she misses something.
More often than not food that's saved in the fridge might as well be scraped into the bin immediately because she just forgets about it. I've thrown out some insanely mouldy things over the years. It's always me that has to re-organise the fridge, she haphazardly stacks stuff around to the extent where she forgets she has stuff inside and what was new fresh food goes past it's sell by date. To crown the food section off, she loves opening new packets of perishables without checking whether a previous one is open already. Actually no, to crown this bit off she always leaves bread crums from toast in the butter as she misjudges the amount so has to put it back into the tub.
Her cooking consumes a huge amount of utensils, you can tell when she's cooked as you wash up about a dozen spoons and forks despite only needing to feed 4. Don't even get me started on how she stabs food on our nice pans with metal forks and knives thus chipping them. Sink is full of left over scraps? You'vr guessed it, she won't ever empty it out and let it accumulate.
When she seals bags of food with a clip she'll leave a gap somewhere so air still gets in. She understands science and how things go stale so this staggers me. Furthermore if I open a packet of say kitchen wipes, she'll somehow manage to rip the packet open despite me priming it so the pack dries out quickly. Oh and often things I've sealed with a clip she'll just throw back into the cupboard without the clip, thus leaving it open to the elements.
She will leave the lids off jars of food, leave things that need to go in the fridge out for hours or the worse, leave lids to things like ketchup unclicked so they are open so sauce ends up spilling out.
She doesn't use the vacuum cleaner much at all and she almost never mops the floor. Oh and if she uses the vaccuum she won't empty it out after use.
Likewise she does not take out the rubbish, she doesn't take the big wheelie bins out OR back in after they're collected despite her leaving and re-entering the house multiple times before I return home from work.
There's likely more than this but you get the picture. If I had to sum it up, it's like the opposite to someone doing little romantic things to make your life easier. It's like someone going out of their way to f**k up your life in little ways. Like if the water filter jug is out of water, she isn't going refill it after having the last glass of water. Or after she's had a cup of tea or other drink, the cup gets left there and I need to patrol the house looking for missing cups.
My wife isn't from a rich background and she's a kind loving person but her lack of any domestication blows my mind.
I've tried telling her countless times, but she always has an excuse or reason why she can't do something so I've given up to keep the peace.
I know it's the 21st century and men should pull their weight around the house. I know we have children and she's an excellent Mother to them, the very best. But it seems like there's a price to be paid and being a Domestic Moron seems to be it. Oh and I work full time, she's off looking after our young. But yet I still do the bulk of the housework, sometimes I get in from work at midnight and I'm up for an hour with chores before I can relax. Guess it's marriage, as she would be utterly screwed with someone who was just as badly organised...

Good Barn Find Need Help
My neighbor gave me his old gold wing for helping with work around his farm. I’m looking to sell it but have no idea where to start. Pictures below it’s been sitting for 10 years don’t know if it runs yet. It has the original helmets and rain cover I believe is missing one lid to the saddle bag on the side. Has less than 2,000 miles. Any advice on a price estimate would be nice. I’ll give updates if I can get it running. But I also don’t know where to start besides drain oil gas new fuel filter and small things.

I read that charcoal has a shelf life and starts to deteriorate. How long can I keep a filter in a sealed bag and still have it be good.

2024.05.14 23:25 Anima_Yume Tips/Thoughts on Plan for moving cross country with a Snail

As the title says I’m moving from one side of my country to the other. Due to some four legged animals we can’t fly, so it will be a multiple day drive. My current plan is to mail my snail over night to a friend who lives closer to where we will be living, however they don’t have a spare tank so my snail would be in a stillwater container for the days I am traveling and maybe one extra day so I can set up the tank(it will depend on how late we get in).
This person does have a tank but the conditions are different than what my snail has so it can’t go in there. I’m also worried about bullying as my snail is alone in a planted tank, and this tank has fish and shrimp. Will it be okay without a filter for a few days in a gallon size container? I will obviously be shipping it in a bag of its own tank water, and am planning on also sending a couple of the plants. To help kickstart things when I get to the new place I will have all the old media, the tank, and a couple gallons of the old tank water to get things running back to normal ASAP.
I don’t want to bring them in the car as it will be a lot of motion for days and I think the stress would be too much. Any tips to keep my snail as healthy as I can for this move?

2024.05.14 21:27 plentiful_bounty Went in search of college moveout trash, came home with a carload full of apartment garbage day trash instead

Found a sturdy bookshelf, baby bottle sterilizer in the box, Victoria’s Secret totes, 100+ skeins of yarn, a 50 gallon fish tank with a filter and good, kid’s bike in good condition, and $100 worth of unopened luxury hair products, for reselling. Score! Sold the bookshelf for $30 before I even got home.
And for me: tomato cages for my garden, a hand knit beanie from the yarn bag, a massage table carrying case, some unopened popcorn, nuts, and granola bars!
Also… found a $200 “pelvic floor trainer”?? Didn’t know that existed. Don’t think I’ll be doing anything with that given it was out of the package… lol

2024.05.14 20:47 iampfox Things I've learned in 3 years of having a frame pool

Things I've learned in 3 years of having a frame pool
In no particular order of importance, but all stuff I wish I would have known!
  1. Upgrade the pump IMMEDIATELY and use filter sand, not filter balls.
  2. When loading sand into the pump, be very very careful and cover the spout. You don't want to spend forever cleaning sand out of the locked up valve, or worse, replace the valve.
  3. Upgrade all of the hose clamps immediately-that plastic crap does not seal well and breaks down.
  4. Level underneath the pool with DIRT not SAND, and be very meticulous. (a leveler and 2x4's is my favorite method now).
  5. Unless you absolutely have to, do not take the pool down for the winter. It's not worth it. Throw some pool antifreeze in there if you're up north, cover it, and call it good. Don't leave your pump/hoses out!
  6. Vacuums are worthless unless you upgrade the pump. Don't frustrate yourself.
  7. Yes it is very important to straighten out the wrinkles in the bottom! That's where all the debris is going to collect and grow bacteria.
  8. You really don't need a ton of chemicals. Liquid chlorine is your friend, not the little tablets. CYA stabilizer, PH up/down, and chlorine get me most of where I need to be unless it is a huge algae problem.
  9. Use lube on all connections. EVERY TIME. You're welcome.
  10. A deck, even a small one, is worth it. I used someone's old tree fort for mine!
  11. If you have the money, a pool cover roller is awesome-Saves you time and protects from debris when it's windy/bacteria from rain when it's stormy. If not, I've found it's not too difficult to buy bulk netting and clamp it to the sides to keep leaves out.
  12. Get the skimmer attachment and pool socks! While you're at it, a $40 battery powered stick vacuum with a couple filter balls and a tab of chlorine is a great quick way to clean up the pool between big maintenance days.
  13. Yes trash bags around hula hoops work for warming the pool a few degrees! I usually don't have to worry about that in Texas tho ;)
  14. The Summer Waves shades are worth every penny! (That's what those posts on the frame are for)
  15. Carpet padding is a cheap way to soften up/prevent weeds from coming through the floor and you can usually find it for free on craigslist or at Re-Store
  16. ALWAYS rinse off before entering--It's not pictured below, but I got a pvc outdoor shower from Amazon that I love for rinsing off! Hook it up to a bluetooth faucet controller or add a separate shut off valve for a shower you can turn on from next to the pool.
Add stuff if you want below for all our new pool friends! :)
Pool pic tax (this is my second pool, my third season, its second season. The first bit the dust after I tried to stash it and it ended up with holes at the creases).
Edit: Doesn't appear to be showing up, so I'll post it separately!

2024.05.14 19:51 Independent_Desk8457 I wish you could exchange bags

Honestly I’m just ranting. I had a defective order of bags and got them replaced so now I have 8 boxes of bags that suck lol. They’re hollister and i thought they were my favourite but since trying the 1pc sensura mio they feel so weird and the confidence i get from the sensura mio is great. I’m just mad because I have 8 boxes of these bags now (40 bags ish total) and I don’t even like them anymore! I cant exchange them and because of the mess up i couldn’t even choose a different version of the bag (i had a filter problem and wanted the filterless ones instead and was told i couldn’t) and I can buy the sensura mio and it be covered if i wanted but since i have all these hollister bags i don’t want to! what a frickin waste. I have to wear my belt again with the hollister bags. always have and i can’t, not wear a belt with them. sensura mio was my freedom 🥲 ugh

2024.05.14 18:25 Call-Me-Ronny My new addition

My new addition
Got this Electro 35 GSN yesterday. Looks like it was almost never used. Still had the mercury battery inside, lucky for me it didn’t spill. Came along with a bag with the sunhood, telephoto and wide-angle adapters/filters and the viewfinder. The leather camerabag is flaking and kinda lost. But not a bad score for €100. What do you reckon?

2024.05.14 17:20 Express-Psychology59 New cabin air filter for the win! Funk gone!

I finally broke down and moved away from the Tesla filters and man what a difference. I had gone through about 3 sets of the Tesla ones and they kept getting funky smelling (I park in a garage) and I've been running these since the fall and zero smell has come back. I think it might be that they have better flow or the material has less cotton or something but all I know is the old gym bag smell has hopefully gone away for good. Just wanted to share a positive experience!

2024.05.14 17:01 Scarletz_ Need a camera bag pack that doesn’t hurt my lower back.

Need a camera bag pack that doesn’t hurt my lower back.
The current bag is a ThinkTank Pro, probably one of their earliest iterations.
Need one that is lighter that is closer to a normal bag, and still be able to have a tripod carry.
Not sure if I have any lower back condition, but I’ve had this bag for over 10 years and if I carry a full load, I risk a lower back strain for the next couple of days.
Anyhow, based on the pics, I’ve always thought this bag’s depth is very deep, almost the same or even more than my body itself. Dont particular have a big frame. I’m not sure if makes things worse. Maybe something with a lower profile might help?
I’ve seen people complain about shoulder pain. I don’t. My shoulders are good, but not my lower back.
I’ll be going on a trip to Hokkaido in June and for most part, I’ll be using a rapidstrap sling for my camera, - 1 or 2 additional prime lens - accessories (filter system , remote triggers , extra batt) - tripod If I’m not using the camera, I’ll then stash the camera into the bag.
Regular stuff: - water bottle - tissue papers - power bank and wires
Let me know if I should post in a more photography specific subreddit instead.
Thanks!

2024.05.14 15:28 gabrielaap Flea Bomb and Aquarium

I have a 37 gallon freshwater aquarium (filter and heater) and have tried everything to get rid of flea infestation other than flea bombing. It’s gotten out of control and need to do the bombing. How can I keep the fish as safe as possible? I’ve read some threads but want to see what people’s experiences with their tanks and bug bombing were. Current thought is to do a large trash bag over and Saran or tape it to bottom of tank. Leave filter and heater plugged in? We need to leave for 3-4 hours. I’m very concerned about them but can’t find any relief from other methods unfortunately. All help is appreciated!

2024.05.14 08:49 Fair_Cartographer838 What could this dream mean? Loaded with violence and trauma/horror

I had a dream probably 12 years ago that I’ve never forgotten, during one of the darkest times in my life when I was scared I’d fail in life
The dream began in a volcanic Ashland where I was traveling with a ragtag band of refugees trying to escape some horrible volcanic event or maybe even super volcanic event, so we were all journeying through this grey valley flanked by ashen mountains with a few distant volcanoes, I was the leader of this group and they were depending on me to hopefully guide them to survival.
We came to a huge obsidian temple structure and it was built onto the valley wall so we had to climb it to ascend out of the valley, so we entered. But the building had an ominous energy like something dark was sleeping inside of it.
Part of the way up, a young boy in my group was running ahead even though I told him to wait and tried to run after him, but as happens in dreams my legs were like lead and I couldn’t keep up. I had this growing sense of dread.
Then the boy slipped off the edge over an overhang and as I looked down after him he plunged into a lava pool, burning to death. My sense of dread didn’t go away it only increased. Somehow I knew (maybe because it was a dream made by my own mind) that that wasn’t the only horror that awaited us in here, this place wanted all of us not just the boy.
That dread manifested as the boy came clawing his way out from the lava pit and let out a horrifying cry like a nazgul or a ghoulish undead, with his flesh bubbling and dripping off of his bones in places he began sprinting with inhuman speed back towards the entrance of the obsidian temple he had fallen from, right back into the entrance.
My band of refugees began panicking, torn between the anguish of watching the boy die and the horror dawning on them of what he had become- a monster- and why he would come sprinting back into the temple some floors below us.
We all heard the inhuman commotion as his undead body slammed into corners, so great was his speed, and we all realized rather abruptly that he was closing in on our group.
I urged the group to begin climbing the stairwells that wrapped around the precipices of this obsidian temple, up towards the valley wall. We had only one possible escape: somehow reaching the top and whatever salvation waited for us up there from the desolate volcanic wasteland and the undead monster that had once been a little boy. So we all begun to sprint, but we were slow.
some of the refugees had bags, some were elderly men and women, it began to dawn on me that we had no hope to escape as i heard the monster closing in from below. I turned to confront him, readying to fight with no weapons.
When he emerged he looked at me with his ghastly skull shining through his melted off face and he spoke and said "You did this to me so I will punish you by making you live while your people die." And he ran past me with superhuman speed and tore into my group, beginning to butcher these weak powerless refugees even as I tried to fight him, plead with him, even as I tried to urge them to keep running, he eventually killed every last one of them with his long ghoul clawed skeletal hands.
"Im sorry." i said to him. "Im sorry i let you become a monster." and he just smiled back at me and stepped off the ledge, plunging again into the lava, this time to rest eternal, but the carnage of my mangled people now lay all around me, and still the black obsidian stairway beckoned, leading up into the tallest passes of the ashen mountains where smoke and fog obscured the path, I had nobody left and nowhere to go but up.
So i went up. Up, up, up through winding valley corridors of sheer black jagged rockfaces, ascending thousands of steps until the atmosphere seemed thin and the night stars shone from above, the distant red glow of the lava flows fading to a dull reminder of the carnage i was leaving behind me.
eventually the climb slowed but the path continued and the stairs began to turn downwards, the rock walls opened up into a dusty grey plain of old ash that had blown here from distant eruptions in the ashlands below, but it was cold up here and dark, and the fog parted and i saw in the distance a structure, not ominous and unnatural like the obsidian temple but a human structure, a distant farmhouse, but I had a feeling when i looked down the winding stairs at this house like i was looking into the blackness of a night that has a rapidly approaching tornado, totally invisible, the sight of this farmhouse gave me a sense of existential dread greater than even the obsidian temple had inspired. But i knew i had to keep going forward anyways. So, with despair in every step, i put one foot infront of the next and kept walking.
As i approached the house I realized its scale, it was not some small farmhouse, more of a manse, and the stairs on this path led straight to its roof where the stairs that had once led down from its top were gone. There was only a gaping black hole in the roof, my only way forward was into this abandoned structure, so with a heart full of fear i lowered myself down into pitch blackness.
I found myself in an ash flooded attic full of furniture like old spinning wheels and some misshapen objects with soot stained sheets over them, the room was so very cluttered with dillapidated old stuff that i could hardly navigate it. I kept bumping stuff then I froze, because on thr far side of the room i saw a sillouhette standing motionless. A feminine sillouhette that seemed like it moved slightly as I brushed against an old desk, causing a noise.
As she reacted, she turned towards me and I saw her face, and her mouth hung open, her jaw split in two, one half dangling and the other holding a malicious grimace.
She moved like a squid striking out from inky blackness at its prey, lifting up off her feet and drifting rapidly to me, her mangled jaw soon centering around my field of view as her face filled my vision and she grabbed the sides of my head, talking to me
"You have to pay for what he did to us, you have to see it all"
And she entered me, i just remember at this point in my dream my vision was full of motion, like she had possessed me and was flying me through the pages of her own history book, in a misty ashen blur of colors and shapes i found myself chopping wood in a dark forest with green leaves around, when a rage filled every fiber of my being and i turned towards a tent, gripping my axe as i swung it through the fabric, turning it on my first wife (in my dream i understood this to be the vision of the woman's husband when he murdered her with his axe) and splitting her jaw and head open rather than any log
I was crying abd begging to be left alone and allowed to leave when we swirled back into the attic, and the ghost was standing right there with inhuman stillness, i couldnt look away from her mangled face as she said "now you know what he did to me…" and she slowly disappeared into a small mist
I was deeply disturbed and crying and disoriented as i looked around the attic and saw a small wooden panel with some grey filtered light showing through it and i went that way, but as i did another ghost of a different women, her neck angled violently screamed at me and grabbed me and possessed me, now I was her husband, the same man with his second wife wringing her neck as she turbed blue
In this manner a series of murdered women ghosts possessed me, forcing me to witness their deaths from the poijt of view of their killer, all killed by the same horrible man in different violent ways, in total 7 stories of 7 murders of 7 dead wives, and each one whisming me to another part of this forsaken farmhouse where they had lurked waiting for whichever man was unlucky enough to enter this cursed homestead
My experience dreaming this was mostly an unsettling amount of vertigo during the dream and images of violence and these ghastly faces of ghosts filling my vision before flying me to another room where another ghost would stand motionless waiting to possess me, the entire time i felt like i was crying and falling from a very extreme height
Eventually though the last ghost released me from her possession and i stood in the kitchen room where she stood with me, her face blue from drowning in a bath tub, and she smiled at mr and spoke more gently than thr others had, she reached to take my hand but when i flinched and screamed she dropped her arm back down to her side and just smiled sadly at me
"Thank you"
And she and all other ghosts were gone and it was just me alone in this forsaken manse's kitchen, and i heard a sound i never expected, trickling water. So i walked towards it and found a back door on the ground level which opened easily, and i stepped outside and saw some white, ash-filtered sunlight and a sight that took my breath away, about 300 yards away was a running river with lush green trees and plants and a thundering waterfall, and i knew that my trials had passed as i walked out towards the end of the ashlands with my boots squishing in fertile muddy soil, and i woke up completely drenched in a puddle of my own sweat

2024.05.14 05:09 No-Cancel-7418 Using Fluval clearmax instructions??

Using Fluval clearmax instructions??
So I recently checked both of my 10 gallon tanks water parameters and everything came out fine except ‘High Nitrate and Nitrite’ I do know that I have my tanks overstocked so I try and do weekly water changes. These fluval clearmax filter bags (100g) “each” can treat up to 80 US gallons of tank water. My question is if it would be safe to use one bag per tank and not cause some sort of spike in my parameters since each bag treats 80 US gallons of water?! Also, where would these filter bags go inside of my tank because remember it’s 2 10 gallon tanks with small filter cartridges. Please help me! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

2024.05.14 03:52 iridescentjillyfish Cat with history of bladder stones isn't drinking enough water - help!

NOT looking for medical advice! My cat has a great vet team - just looking for anecdotal advice and tips and tricks on how to manage to get my cat to drink more water lol
Quincy is my 8 year old FIV+ cat - we rescued him 6 years ago and he's had nearly all of his teeth removed and, last October, had surgery for calcium oxalate bladder stones after urinating in shoes, on bags, on carpets, and finally, on tiles. After his surgery, he's had no behavioral problems since - yay!
Because he's a senior and FIV+, he goes to the vet twice a year. He went late last week and his labs look good, he's physically healthy and doesn't have a bladder stone recurrence yet. The issue is that his urine is very acidic and concentrated - we want it to be alkaline and diluted so this is obviously not good.
He was prescribed Hills c/d Urinary Stress food but we think he's been snacking on our dog's food and treats which has disrupted his strictly prescription diet. We're going back in about a month after going on full lockdown (no treats, no extras, no nothing besides his kibble) and getting his urine retested to see if there's improvements.
Here's some things we've tried:
The vet says we're basically needing to increase his water intake or we'll have to switch his food (again), give him oral supplements to make his bladder more alkaline, or do fluid replacement. We're happy to give him a different food but the rest we'd like to avoid.
We can't do water flavorings and have to feed him exclusively prescription food so no water-heavy supplements like tuna, etc.
Have you had any successes getting your cat to drink more? I'll do anything!

2024.05.14 02:12 SeasonNo2239 8mm natural filters?

I have been looking for 8mm filters that are not made from plastic. I have found a few 6mm natural fibre filters, and I cannot understand why not in 8mm. Is 8mm for tobacco/cigarettes irregular?
I tried the 8mm RAW cotton filters, and experienced zero draw. I tried unpacking the densely packed filter, hastily got annoyed and regretfully threw the whole bag out thinking “how could they sell a product that does not work?”
I tried to get Arango organic filters, but the one site that carries them does not deliver outside the US, and the other site is a wholesaler. I am in Canada.
I tried to order from Mr Tipps for their bamboo corn filter. This product looks pretty cool. But there is a website error that prevents me from completing the order while checking out. And they are unresponsive to emails.
In the meantime I have been stuffing bits of cotton in pre rolled tips. But this is pretty tedious. Am I S.O.L.? I moved to RYO for a cleaner smoke. Tobacco, paper, filter. And there does not seem to be a market for filters made from a non plastic material. Cotton, paper, corn, etc.
I would genuinely like to understand why not? I am blue collar, and it seems like most smokers around me are only interested in the cheapest smoke they can get and don’t care what is in it or what it is made from or even how bad the smoke is. I would think smoking through a plastic filter would be undesirable.
I would move to just pre rolled paper tips, but I get tongue bite when smoking without filters, and loose tobacco falls out. Perhaps I could dry the tobacco a bit more, and try a slower draw more like cigar smoking. I don’t know.
Any suggestions? Thank you.

2024.05.14 01:35 TheLastRiter I never should have gone to this farmhouse alone. [Part 1]

My hands are shaking as I write this, I have to document my story incase something happens to me in the next few days. I'm not sure where to begin but I suppose here is better than anywhere.
I've always had this weird feeling, this sensation inside of me that I was older than I actually was. By the time I was twelve, my soul felt as though it was forty. By the time I reached twenty, I felt like an old woman. I would watch people around my age acting foolish, and I always thought, "What a bunch of children." So it was no surprise to anyone that when I turned twenty-one, I left my hometown and college and decided to spend the summer alone by renting an old farmhouse in an insignificant town on the edge of an even more insignificant border.
When I told my mother, she had a veritable fit, unable to find the words. She spluttered and raged around me for days before I finally left early one morning to avoid her guilt and frustration with my choices. I was not sure why I craved solitude at such a young age, why I found solace in being alone and removed from society.
In high school, I had changed unexpectedly, cutting my long blonde hair short and dying it black, getting piercings that my mother loathed and claimed no young lady should have. You see, my mother was raised proper, as she called it. Good family, good husband, and finally a good life. She despised her perfect life being squashed by my alternative looks and feelings of the same world. She just didn't understand me or the world as it changed around her. I felt like I was just a trophy to her and my father, her perfect angel who had been tainted by my own demented thoughts.
I never told my parents where I was staying, one last rebellious mission before leaving for a few months, and it took me only a few hours to arrive at the farmhouse where I would be staying for the next few months. The land around the farm was dead or dying, old crops rose out of the dry dusty earth and had turned black and forgotten, as if this land was the example of dreams long forgotten and empty. A single dreary lane connected this desolate farmhouse to the rest of the world. On the outside, it was drab and looked as though it would fall apart. It had two stories but still seemed cramped and small, as if it were a single floor tied to the ground.
Across from the house, bordering the tall weeds that had reclaimed much of the farmland, stood a maudlin-looking faded red barn, one door propped open in a dejected manner revealing naught to me but shadows, dust, and a little mystery.
Next to the barn, staked into the ground on an old-looking cross, was a ragged scarecrow. It had drab brown clothing, but its face was oddly realistic, like it was watching me with a disapproving manner. Straw poked through its joints at odd angles like they were trying to break free from their confines. The scarecrow obviously didn't do its job as it was covered in no less than three crows.
I parked my car next to the barn and stepped out into the dusty yard before the farmhouse that I would make my home for the next few months. I checked under the front mat for the key and put it in the lock.
With a satisfying click, the door fell inward into the farmhouse. Surprisingly, the inside of the farmhouse was modern, clean, and looked quite inviting. I could smell the fresh paint on the walls, and everything was so white. The realtor had told me she would stop by tomorrow to collect the rent, and she had tried to chat my ear off on the phone about all the renovations she and her son were doing on the place.
I sighed with contentment and tossed my bags beside the door. I dug around in my bag and removed my camera, my father's old film shooter as he called it. I had taken up the hobby years ago for what I called capturing the oddity in the world.
I explored the small house a little more; the ground floor consisted of a single room and small bathroom with a shower. The bedroom was upstairs and was the only room, the stairs connected directly to the white and pink monstrosity that was the master bedroom. The pillows had laces on them and almost made me gag from the cuteness. There was even cute white lace curtains on the window with little flowers stitched onto them.
Out of the only window of the room, I could see the barn and the scarecrow. I aimed my camera at the pair and snapped a photo. From this angle, the scarecrow appeared to be staring straight at me. It stood next to the left side of the barn in a dejected manner like a chastised child.
A shudder involuntarily ran through me at the sight, but I moved on back downstairs. It was getting close to dinner time now, and I had brought some food with me.
After a few minutes, I had my dinner on the stove cooking and the crickets chirping outside the open window. As I sat down to eat next to the window, I felt at peace for one of the first times in years. The solitude of this old farm was exactly what I needed. The window supplied a nice breeze that wafted through the place, it smelled of grass and warm summer nights, made me feel at peace. The simple dish of spaghetti with tomato sauce and a glass of wine was all that I needed right here, right now in this moment.
That night I climbed into the frilly laced bed and sunk into the claustrophobic mattress. I felt like Goldilocks in the mama bear's bed as it was altogether too soft. From my perfumed bed, I had a good view out the window. I had left the porch light on, and it cast an eerie glow across the yard. The barn loomed ominously, stalwart against the light of the porch, like it was protecting the shadows from the battering ram of light. The somber scarecrow leaned against the left side of the barn.
With a small jump, I thought I saw its arm move slightly. I peered through my camera using the zoom to get a better view of the scarecrow. It was completely still in the night, and I laughed quietly to myself at my silliness. I had always enjoyed horror movies, but there was no chance I was living in one. I settled back into bed and put my camera down. Within a few minutes, I fell into sleep's warm embrace.
What felt like only a few minutes later, I sat up in bed. It was still dark out, I could hear crickets chirping through the open window, and I strained my ears for a moment.
I thought something had woken me up. I felt a cold shiver run down my spine as a cold breeze wafted in through the window. I pulled the frilly blanket up around myself when I heard it. A thud sounded below me, shaking the whole world into silence. The crickets stopped chirping, and my heart felt like it had stopped beating. Someone was in the house. I hadn't locked the door or closed the kitchen window, and now someone was downstairs. A second thud sounded like a boot on the staircase. Then another and another as something was slowly moving up the stairs towards the room.
I don't know why I did it, but something came over me. I wasn't big or especially brave, but my normal cowardice in social situations changed instantly. With a dash, I tore across the room, flicking on the lights, ready to face my attacker, to defend myself against male or female. I would fight, and I would win.
But as the lights turned on, ready to strike with my foot, nothing was there. The staircase was empty, and upon further inspection, the entire house was empty. The kitchen window was open, and I shut and locked it securely before checking the door. Nothing. I sat down on the couch, my heart pounding out of my chest, as I tried to make sense of what had just happened.
"I must have still been half-asleep," I said aloud to the room in a thinly veiled attempt to calm my nerves. It failed horribly, but I went with it. What else could you do in a situation like that?
After locking up the house, I went back up to that frilly four-poster bed in the bedroom and stared out the window. Nothing was in the yard except my car, the barn, and the same old sad-looking scarecrow staring across the yard.
Day 2
The next morning, I woke up to the soft light filtering through the lace curtains. Despite the strange events of the previous night, I felt strangely refreshed, as if the morning sun had chased away the shadows that lingered in my mind.
I descended the stairs, the wooden steps creaking softly under my weight, and headed to the kitchen. As I brewed a pot of coffee, my mind wandered back to the events of last night. Was it just a figment of my imagination, or was there really someone in the house?
Shaking off the unease, I decided to explore the farmhouse in the daylight. I wandered through the room, admiring the modern renovations that clashed with the rustic exterior. The farmhouse had a charm to it, despite its eerie surroundings.
As I made my way outside, the cool morning air greeted me, and I took a deep breath, letting the serenity of the countryside wash over me. The barn stood tall against the backdrop of the morning sky, and the scarecrow seemed to watch me as I crossed the yard.
I approached the barn, curiosity getting the better of me. Pushing open the creaky door, I stepped inside, the musty scent of hay filling my nostrils. The interior was dimly lit, the sunlight filtering through the cracks in the wooden walls.
I explored every nook and cranny of the barn, but found nothing out of the ordinary. As I turned to leave, something caught my eye. In the corner of the barn, hidden beneath a pile of old blankets, was a small wooden chest.
My heart racing with anticipation, I lifted the lid of the trunk and peered inside. What I found took my breath away. It was a collection of old photographs, yellowed with age, depicting scenes from a bygone era. They were of a man with his family, two young kids, and a beautiful young wife. The man had yellow blonde hair, almost like straw in texture, but he smiled so happily with his family.
I sifted through the photographs, my fingers trembling with excitement. Who had left these behind, and why? Each photograph seemed to tell a story, a glimpse into the past of this forgotten farmhouse.
As I sat there, lost in thought, a sudden noise jolted me back to reality. It was the sound of footsteps coming from outside the barn.
"Hello?" The dreamy voice of a woman called to me from the entrance to the barn.
I slammed the lid of the trunk shut, closing the memories up in a flurry as I spun around to be greeted by a quite pretty woman with blonde hair and a pink suit skirt combo. She had bright pink lipstick, that seemed to be a permanent fixture on her face, and quite shiny and sparkly blue eye shadow on her lids. I myself only wore black eyeliner. This woman was like Barbie in her proportions, thin waist, long hair, and large tracts of land, as my father would have said.
"Oh, hello," I said simply, always awkward in normal social situations.
If she noticed anything odd about me, she breezed over it in an easy manner. Taking me by the shoulders, she led me out of the dusty barn and into the yard.
"You must be Polly. We have been waiting a while for you to come. I simply must know what you think of the renovations to the house. Aren’t they just to die for?" The lady said all in one breath, as if she didn’t need air to speak.
"Yes, they are quite nice..." I started before she cut me off, not in a rude manner but instead in one that she would have continued on even if I had just told her I was not Polly and instead I was a mass murderer looking for my next victim.
"You see, me and my son Eli—yes, Eli, you stop lurking in the shadows over there," she said, continuing on as I noticed a younger man leaning up against the barn. He wore simple clothes of jeans and a white t-shirt but had a handsome face. His hair was brown and hung slightly over his eyes.
"I hope you don’t mind if my son here continues working on some renovations while you stay here? Strictly on the outside of the house, mind you. A fresh coat of white paint would make this little beauty shine. We would have finished by now if not for the accidents," she continued, completely unabashed by my silence.
"Sorry. But you are the realtor?" I said, trying to regain my feet under me.
"Oh my god, I am so sorry, dear!" she said with an affable cackle.
"Yes, yes, I am Barbara, but all my friends call me Barb. That over there is Eli. Eli, come say hi," Barb said while her painted talons rested firmly on my shoulder.
Eli stomped over, keeping his eyes low, in a sort of moody way that actually intrigued me, sort of.
When he glanced up at me, I noticed he drank in me from head to toe, and for the first time, I realized what I was wearing. An old rock t-shirt of one of my favorite bands and, of all things, my black pajama bottoms with cartoon bats on them that said "happy halloween."
I felt my face blush crimson as he made eye contact with me. He had very mysterious eyes of blue that seemed to cut right through my soul.
"Nice shirt," he said while gesturing to me. His voice was quiet and uncertain, as if he didn’t get much practice with the art. Knowing his mother, it seemed highly accurate.
"Thanks. Do you like them?" I asked.
"Oh, he likes all sorts of things, don’t you, Eli? Honestly, you two can gab on forever. But miss, I believe we have a small matter of payment," Barb said, drawing the conversation back to herself.
"Of course. Let me go get it," I said as I went back into the house and retrieved the envelope with the rent money in it.
Barb grabbed the envelope in her bright pink talons and snapped a piece of bubblegum between her teeth. With quick fingers, she leafed through the cash, counting it. As she counted, her normal bubbly personality seemed to disappear, giving way to what I gleaned was her true thoughts and feelings before the facade slipped on once again.
"Mmkay, perfect honey, this is the right amount. Now you have my number, so you call if you need anything. Like I said earlier, Eli will stop by from time to time to work on painting the house. I promise you he won’t be an imposition, just pay him no mind," Barb said in a sweet voice as she popped her gum in between each word.
"Eli, come on, please, I have an appointment in town," Barb said to her son, and they both climbed into a garish pink convertible with jewels hanging from the mirror wrapped in a gold chain.
Barb waved one last time as she sped off out of the driveway, covering me in dust as she spun the wheel around.
With their departure, I went inside and retrieved my camera. I spent a few minutes shooting a few pictures I thought were worthy. I re-entered the barn and pulled the old trunk out into the sunshine. Inside was only a handful of photos, some old clothes, and what looked like some old heirlooms. A beautifully old candlestick and a few leather-bound books lay at the bottom, covered by an old tablecloth. The tablecloth was a nice white with intricate swirling patterns inlaid around the edges.
Why would these things be packed away in here? They were so beautiful. I decided to bring the stuff inside for further inspection. As I lifted the trunk, out of the corner of my eye, I thought I saw something move in the tall grass at the edge of the property. I stared for a minute, but nothing moved again. I must be getting jumpy being alone like this. After last night and then this, I was just imagining things.
I brought the items inside and spread them out. I put the tablecloth on the table, and it hung low to the ground. I placed the candlestick by the window and took out the photos again, spreading them out.
The photos told me a story of a loving family that obviously lived in the farmhouse before me. They had a photo next to the barn, with a brand new looking scarecrow in the back. The man even had his arm around it; it looked so much cleaner and proper in this photo. I stared outside at the sad-looking scarecrow.
I took my camera and the photo and went outside to stand next to the scarecrow. His post hung kind of crooked in the earth like it was weighed down by the scarecrow.
I snapped a photo of the scarecrow as it was, then examined the original photo. I began resettling the post in the ground, but it kept sagging. I decided to pull him out of the ground and move him while I added more dirt to his hole. With some effort, I reseated him into his original hole. He already looked better, but I straightened his clothes and pulled out the last bits of straw that stuck out of his clothes. When I was finished, I looked back at him and took a photo, smiling while I did so at my work.
I then spent some time sweeping the front porch and banging the dust out of the cushions before I curled up on a wicker chair with plump cushions for a few hours reading a book I had brought with me.
I felt quite content at this place. The sounds of the crickets began again, putting me at ease as the sun began to descend. I had spent the entire day just relaxing, and it was perfect. I sat sprawled out in the chair, too lazy to go and make dinner or even move. My bladder was full, but I waited until the last moment before dashing inside and relieving myself.
That's when I noticed it, out in the yard. It seemed as if the scarecrow had moved closer. Once shrouded by the barn slightly, it now had moved a few steps into the light from the porch. My heart dropped at the sight. Not again, I must be asleep on the porch in the chair. I pinched myself, trying to wake up, but all I received was a sore arm.
I closed my eyes, then rubbed them, hoping to dispel whatever plagued my mind, but when I opened my eyes, I noticed the scarecrow was even closer. Halfway across the yard now, it sat menacingly, hanging crooked in the dirt. The scarecrow seemed to be staring at me with an intense gaze. The slits in its face were open now, and in the porch light, I swear I could see human eyes underneath the mask.
I moved towards the front door, locking it in a swift motion. I was shaking now, and it took me a minute to relax. I never took my eyes off the scarecrow for fear of it moving again.
My cellphone was upstairs, so I couldn't flee without the scarecrow moving again. I breathed out slightly and unlocked the door, letting it swing in with a creak. The night outside was silent, as if everything was holding its breath. The usual crickets that plagued me with their song day and night had fallen quiet. I stepped out onto the porch; I needed to go confront this demonic entity. Something about this still made me think this was a prank.
"Eli, is that you?" I called out to the scarecrow.
No response, of course. I steeled myself and put one foot off the porch, never taking my eyes off the scarecrow before me. Something seemed to be dripping from its head as I approached, a dark slime that seemed to be melting from its joints as it stood there silently, except for the constant drip of the liquid on the dry dirt before me.
I walked around the scarecrow, determined to figure out what was going on. As I circled it, my vision darkened for a moment as I faced towards the light of the house. I jumped as the scarecrow's head turned to face me as I looked away. The black liquid drained faster from the being, forming a shallow pool at its feet.
I'm not proud of what I did next, but I fled, taking my eyes off the scarecrow. I made a mad dash for the farmhouse. Behind me, I could hear the pounding of feet. I screamed as loud as my lungs would let me. My voice rang through the silence as I grabbed the door handle and wrenched open the door as I felt a strong grip fall on my shoulder.
I turned to defend myself, but nothing was there. The scarecrow was gone, the wooden cross had vanished, as had the pool of dark liquid in the dirt. The world sprung back to life; the crickets began chirping loudly, and my heart restarted. I slammed the door, and the air from my force scattered the photographs on the table. I ran upstairs, leaving the lights on in the house, and dove onto the bed, wrapping myself in the frilly blanket like a set of frilly armor.
I snatched my camera from the bedside table and held it close, determined to document the rest of the night. I held it in shaking hands as the noise downstairs began—the sound of boots crossing the floor to the stairs and the careful but heavy steps of ascension as they climbed closer and closer to me.
This time, I didn't lunge forward as the light was already on. I glanced out the window, but the scarecrow was still gone. I focused my camera on the stairs and waited as the steps came closer and closer. A shape began to form as the head of whatever was coming up the stairs crested the floor. Then a plain brown mask with slits where the eyes would be. It froze for a moment, then slowly turned its head towards me. Inside the slits were human eyes that seemed to be leaking dark red blood.
In the light, I could see it now. I snapped a photo of the beast, the flash setting off a reaction in the beast. The scarecrow moved so fast up the stairs it was a blur. My scream echoed throughout the house as it lunged at me. Filthy hands pinned me down, and the deep crimson liquid began pouring out of every joint of the scarecrow. It began covering my face, my eyes, and getting into my open mouth. I spluttered and kicked at the beast, but my blows had no purchase, as if the scarecrow on top of me had no substance to itself.
I coughed and spluttered on the liquid as it began to fill my mouth faster and faster. I tried not to swallow any, but it tried to find purchase as I was held down.
"Polly?" A nervous voice called from below.
Suddenly, as if the angels had called, the pressure dissipated, and I crashed to the floor in a heap, trying to spit the blood out, but nothing came—it was gone. Footsteps pounded up the stairs again, and I flew back in fear, closing my eyes.
"Oh my god. Polly, are you okay?" A voice said, and gentle hands grabbed my arm.
My eyes shot open at the human touch, and I grabbed Eli into a tight hug, where I promptly began sobbing in fear, my whole body shaking as Eli awkwardly hugged me.
"Don't worry, it's going to be okay," Eli said patiently to me as he hugged me back gently and began stroking my back.
I shivered in a choking sob and fell into his arms, desperately wanting to believe him, and for some reason, I did.
