2024.05.14 14:16 LazyBlueBun Basketball team glitch??

I don’t know if this is a glitch or something, but I joined the basketball team in high school, my special talent is sports, I’ve got full athleticism, and all my stats are maxed.
Despite all of that, my performance only stayed in the orange field, even though I practiced 20 or so times, until I got kicked out of the team two years after I joined for not performing well enough 😕

2024.05.14 14:15 SpryteMontique Need some opinions

Hey reddit, I'm not exactly sure how well this will go but, this is my first post. I need tips opinions, or anything that will help towards budgeting. I know asking the net is a bad idea but I don't have many people in my life to ask for opinions or tip wise so, here I am.
19M, I'm a high school and trade school graduate (graduated highschool 2022 and trade around begining of November 2023), I had spent 7 months using indeed, linked in, and whatever else I could get my hands for job searching and nothing came of it. I then found a temp to hire position through a temp agency and I make $19, and work 8 hour graveyard shifts Sunday to Thursday with the occasional Friday.
My take home is around $500, how would I budget these things out? I'm just really lost on how this all works. Anything helps out
Edit: just realised I didn't put my pay period, I get weekly pay, I've also got a girlfriend and we are at her parents house, no rent aside from the monthly $50 for food that goes into my savings

2024.05.14 13:50 threecrow_ Applying to art schools in the US? Please consider SJSU!!

Hey! I'm an Animation/Illustration and Linguistics student about to finish my 1st year at SJSU. Unfortunately it's way past college season, so this is more so directed at future applicants this coming fall.
I feel the dire need to share this underrated program because I know so many people wave this place away for being a state school. I am biased, but even with long thought put in, I genuinely think SJSU may be the best value animation/visdev program you could find anywhere in the US. Realistically there are way more successful faculty and perhaps a better education somewhere else like CalArts, but that marginal difference is at the price of $230k+. What you get at SJSU is scarily good; you might even start feeling bad for how little the faculty are being paid (the CSU-wide strike cough cough).
I used to only care about prestige--I thought I could only be satisfied with attending the cream of the crop; I fucking hated the thought of coming here. Little did I know, one semester in this program would be the most I've learned about art and work ethics in a lifetime.
SJSU A/I is one of the friendliest, most hardworking places you can be as an artist. We all share the same values and passion for art. Everyone in the program treats each other like family, including the professors! Side note: I've always heard that professors at CSUs usually love teaching and are passionate, and it's true. Why else would you teach at a place where you earn pennies lol. Even my linguistics and philosophy professors have been equally as lovely!
Despite that, this is one of the most rigorous programs around, and quite a few students end up dropping out during the "weeder year"/1st year (personally my friends and I gauge the dropout rate is ~20%-25%). A few more are then kicked out during the portfolio review in 2nd year. To me, ArtCenter trumps every school in terms of hardships and acceleration (RIP Advanced Perspective class lol), and I would put SJSU a step below that. We are largely about work ethics and learning to manage time here! IMO it's a necessary stressor to prepare you for the industry. You will break and realize you don't have enough passion for an animation career, or you will get up stronger with levels of discipline that will impress the industry.
I cannot say for the advanced classes how well they prepare students for work, but I can say that the foundational classes are invaluable. In particular, one class has seriously changed the course of my life: ANI 13 taught by John Clapp. ANI 13 is a life class disguised as an art class, and it refines you as a person. It teaches you to take life slow in the modern age of permanent adrenaline rushes. It presents to you interesting facets of the world that somehow always ties back to valuable art advice. I left every lecture with my mind blown! The class also assigns you a sketchbook to work on for the entire semester, during which you practice how to observe and think like an artist.
Mine still has ways from where Clapp wants them to be, but if you're curious about the level of attention that's expected of an ANI 13 sketchbook, I do have a few pages online: https://corrinjinwu.weebly.com/
That's pretty much how I'd summarize this program so far. Please, PLEASE consider it for your own sake if you want an affordable and quality education! Here's a pros and cons list to finish up:
PROS:
CONS:
If you're curious about how the curriculum works, what life at SJSU is like, professor selections, etc. you are free to shoot me a DM on Instagram. I would love to welcome prospectives or curious students.
And if you want the same/sister program but with much less rigor, consider CSULB!! I've spoken to Aubrey Mintz, a professor, and a graduate of the program before, and it seems like they're quite laidback over there (albeit at the cost of underpreparing you if you aren't self-driven).
Anddd, don't fucking go to Academy of Art University. It's the only FOR-PROFIT school I've seen before, and the president is a near-billionaire devil selling art degrees like a scam.

2024.05.14 13:47 Simgoodness Question about orthodontist plan during childhood: your opinion

Question about orthodontist plan during childhood: your opinion
Hi.
Where I live, in Quebef (Canada), it seems to be more than normal to have your kids have an orthodontic plan from the elementary school up to, if they are lucky, the week prior to the Prom.
So, basidally, a big portion of kids have orthodontic treatments whoch included having braces in their mouths from age sometime 7 to 16 or 17.
Could you tell me how you see this practice?
I think it is really really realllllllly stupid. The kid does not seems to have a say in it. I litterally had 10 friends like that.
I understand that it will prevent maybe surgery later.
For me I had had orthodontic treatment trying to prevent Ortognatic class 3. But for whatever reason we stopped the treatment less than 6 months into it Injad to wear a night stuff that goes in your face with bands and stuff. Reallllyy uncomfortable. I had to turn something in my mouth everu week and that was difficult to do. I also had to push everyday for 30 minutes my teeth with a wooden stick.
Anyways, that was real shit. But one of my parent decided that they did not want to pay or help me, so they unilaterally stopped the treatment. Yeaaars later my other parent finished to pay the treatment and the only thing that was possible at this time was the cracking devices that would fix the width*? of my mouth. Took about 6 months.
Then, later, I paid my brace for the surgery I needed for my class 3 ortognsti surgery. I had to wear the braces for 2½ years only. Then had the surgery that was 2 months of getting use to and recovery. And bam, anazing face, amazing teeth, and amazing childhood without a treatment plan from agr 7 to age 17!
So, if I had not done what I have done, I would have been loke a friend of mine that had to have exactly the same orthodontic plan (we had the same problems), and she had had those orthodontic stuff in her mouth from age 7 to age 17 until her surgery. Because the surgery requires that you keep your teeth perfectly in place.
So, I wonder here of there is not dishonesty from the orthodontist community. And maybe lack of ethics.
Having said that, my sugery went fine and all, so that might be why I see it like that. But, it was may more interesting to have 3 years of orthodontic plan + my surgery, all done under those same year, than the other kids with braces and all in their mouth from more than 10 years. I think this is weird to do and accept to do to kids.
But, maybe my souvenirs are boas.
Anyways, what are your observations and opinion?
P.s.; let's not forget, the prce for those treatment and the dentist is high. Lets say you have to fix both upper and lower teeth, it is +10 000$ CAD and the dentist at least +300$ CAD each year, if you have perfect hygene which is not the case for most kids, and even less with kids with orthodontic plan.

2024.05.14 13:42 universemates Idols' anecdotes that sound like they come from a coming-of-age movie?

Coming-of-age is my favorite movie genre and one of my favorite thing about Kpop is how they similarly capture the ideas of youth, personal identity, found family, first love, etc. whether it's through their music or their personal stories. What are your favorite idols' anecdotes that sound like they could be a scene from a movie? Some of my recent favorites are:
It was summer [after high school graduation]. I always ran on the playground near my house every night, counting the stars of the night sky [...] I had good grades and was accepted into a good college. Continuing my studies seemed like a sensible choice. But while I was running and watching the night sky, I pondered that should do what I really like. On the last night of the two weeks period, on the way home after running, I called my mom and said "I will learn music again"
ZB1's Sung Hanbin's on his pivot from majoring in Practical Dance to Kpop in college:
I majored in street dance. Since I was in high school, I was thinking about directing my job as a dancer. At a very important moment for college entrance, I've already passed a lot of other universities on Practical Dance Major [...] When my younger sister was selected for the national climbing team, the moment she hit the summit, something inside me hits hard. "I should also do what I want to do (idol)"
I just find the images of Zhang Hao running in the summer night when he decided to pursue his dream and of Hanbin having his epiphany when his sister reached the top of the climbing wall so romantic & cinematic. As someone who is still trying to figure out what they want to do in life, stories like these also comfort me that it's okay to take risk and it's never to late to start over, which are major themes of coming-of-age dramas.

2024.05.14 13:36 rowrowrowdab0at How would a reality TV show appearance affect my chances for medical school and beyond?

I’m a nontraditional student and since my graduation, I’ve been a digital nomad. At one point, I was invited to be a contestant on a reality tv show (think love island/ big brother) in a foreign country. In my opinion, I didn’t do anything too embarrassing, but in no way was I professional throughout it the whole time.
I’ve been thinking about applying to medical school this cycle, but I was wondering if any of you know how this could affect my application. Would schools use this to view me as an unfavorable candidate or am I freaking out over nothing?
Edit: For context I have a 3.7 gpa and 509 mcat. Looking to apply to mostly service schools due to high number of clinical and volunteering hours.

2024.05.14 13:32 Javier07YT Taking A+ Core 1 Tommorow. Any study tips?

Hi all, I’m currently a student in high school who’s willing to further strengthen my knowledge to pass the Core 1 for CompTIA A+. Although, I’m not exactly sure if I need to study or not.
I feel more than confident enough knowing my experience and knowledge. I’ve watched Professor Messer’s videos on 1101 and a lot of it seemed like review to me but many people in here have emphasized the fact to take the practice tests but I’m not sure if I would need them.
Should I take them just in case? Should I wing it and potentially fail? I already have my ITF+ but I know that won’t be too much help, and I have other introductory certificates with some of the concepts being related to the sections within the exam.

2024.05.14 13:20 daswef2 [RATE ANNOUNCEMENT] Brazil Rate

Hello, welcome to the Brazilian Classics Rate! This rate covers five albums released between the years 1968 and 1974, exploring the likes of Tropicália, MPB, Samba, and more. We are excited to enjoy this music with both long time fans, and also welcome newcomers to experience these all-time favorites for the first time.
Note: I am not Brazilian and am not a Portuguese writer / speaker. My apologies if anything is lost in translation through this process.
Hold on: What’s a rate?
About once a month, this subreddit holds games called “rates” where a host selects a collection of songs and people score each song on a scale of 1-10 (with a single 11 & a 0 available as well). Ballots of these scores are submitted, and then over “reveal” weekend, the host takes the averages of the songs and eliminates them from worst to best, giving one song out of all the albums the top spot, the crown, & bragging rights forever.
Our sister subreddit popheads has a Guide to Rates Video that can give you a broad overview of rates (please note our reveal process is thread-based instead of video chatrooms). And here's recent examples of a rate announcement and a rate reveal.
BALLOT Due Date - June 21st, 2024
Reveal Weekend - June 28-30, 2024

Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes (1968)
Os Mutantes was made up of Rita Lee, and the brothers Arnaldo Baptista and Sérgio Dias. In 1968 Os Mutantes released their debut album, were featured on the Tropicália Ou Panis Et Circenses compilation, and performed as the backing band for Gilberto Gil's self-titled second album. The Tropicália movement embraced taking international ideas and re-interpreting them, combining them to create something Brazilian. Os Mutantes will likely be a favorite for those who love psychedelic rock.

Another featured artist from the Tropicália Ou Panis Et Circenses compilation, Gal Costa released her debut album in 1967, and her follow-up self titled album in 1969. Gal Costa was close friends with both Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso as well as their spouses, and Gal Costa's bossa nova debut Domingo was a close collaboration with Veloso. By the release of Gal Costa we hear more of the impact of Tropicália and psychedelia on her sound. This self titled album features more songs from writers besides Veloso, including songs written by Gilberto Gil, Rosil Cavalcanti, Tom Zé, Roberto Carlos, Erasmo Carlos, Jorge Ben, and Torquato Neto.

Clube Da Esquina - Clube Da Esquina (1972)
The Clube Da Esquina name (Corner Club) refers to a corner of the street where Lô Borges used to live, and Borges and Milton Nascimento played for fun in the 1960s.
“I hope our young people don’t allow themselves to be swept up in this dictatorship business, because they don’t understand what it was like,” said [Milton Nascimento] who was stalked by agents from the notorious department of political and social order as his career took off in the 1960s. “Whenever we were going to release a song we had to send it to them for them to censor.” Eventually, Nascimento’s manager rented an isolated beach house where the musicians were free to compose the record of their lives. “It was wonderful … just us and the waves rolling up to our front door,” said Borges. “We weren’t thinking about selling millions of records or being the next big summer hit. We just wanted to make art.” Nascimento smiled as he recalled how that legendary album was conceived half a century ago, far from the prying eyes of the dictatorship. “It was a record made just by friends … We’d spend all day composing, from the moment we awoke with the fishermen bringing in their nets to the moment we went to bed.”
The cover of the album features a picture of two boys playing in rural Rio de Janeiro by the photographer Carlos da Silva Assunção Filho (also known as Cafi).

Novos Baianos - Acabou Chorare (1972)
By popular demand, Novos Baianos has been added to the rate mix! As suggested by their name, Novos Baianos were founded in the state of Bahia in 1969. During the making of Acabou Chorare, they were mentored by the "Father of Bossa Nova", João Gilberto. The album's title (translated as No More Crying) also came from a story about Gilberto's daughter.
Note: the album has two versions of Preta Pretinha, track 2 which is the full version and track 10 which seems to have been a radio edit. We are only rating the full version of the song.
  1. Brasil Pandeiro
  2. Preta Pretinha

Jorge Ben Jor - A Tábua de Esmeralda (1974)
"I’m not in any movement, no. I think movements adopted me."
Jorge Ben Jor is the first recorded artist of the five here, but A Tábua De Esmeralda is chronologically our latest recorded album of the rate. This one is arguably a concept album; influenced by the Hermetic text "The Emerald Tablet" as well as Jorge's interest in alchemy, and features songs focused on Afro-Brazilian identity such as "Zumbi".
  1. Os alquimistas estão chegando os alquimistas
  2. O homem da gravata florida

Rules - PLEASE READ ALL OF THESE BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR SCORES
Listen to each song and assign each a score between 1 and 10. Decimals are fine, but please refrain from giving decimal scores with more than 1 spot. This is because I'm using a computer program to parse the votes and print everything out (more on that later).
You have to listen to and score every song in the main rate. Otherwise, I will not accept your ballot as it will crash the program (more on that later).
Your scores should NOT be considered confidential as they aren’t. Feel free to shitpost about them in the general discussion threads whenever you feel like it - users over at popheads usually just talk about their averages of the albums and what 11 and 0 they gave (which I will explain on the next bullet point!)
You may give ONE song a 0 and ONE song an 11 in the main rate. Please reserve these for your least favorite and most favorite tracks; excessive sabotage ruins rate results and generally makes things less fun.
You can change your scores at any time! Feel free to PM me at any point after submission before the deadline and I'll be happy to revise them for you.
I am using a computer program that fellow rater letsallpoo designed in order to parse these votes! While this will make things a lot more efficient and reduces errors on my part, this does mean that scores need to be sent in a very specific way. The easiest way to make sure your scores follow the necessary format is to use the pre-prepared link at the top & bottom of this post. PLEASE USE THAT. You can copy and paste it to a notepad file or something and fill in your scores there, but PLEASE use that format to send in your scores.
DO NOT SABOTAGE the rate by giving outrageously low/high scores for the sole purpose of skewing the results, we reserve the right to exclude any ballot we suspect of this. If you're worried your scores could be mistakenly perceived as such, all you need to do is leave comments explaining the reasoning behind them.
Did a lot of copy and pasting here (including the following list of users), so thank you to all the raters of old: vapourlomo; roseisonlineagain; DolphLundgrensArms; R_E_S_I_G_N_E_D; stansymash; ClocktowerMaria; aerocom; themilkeyedmender; greencaptain; Crankeedoo; dirdbub; ThatParanoidPenguin; tedcruzcontrol; kappyko; FuckUpSomeCommasYeah; LazyDayLullaby; SRTViper; Whatsanillinois; NFLFreak98; freav; freeofblasphemy; kvothetyron, RatesNorman; aPenumbra; idontreallycare4; p-u-n-k_girl; luigijon3; WaneLietoc; dream_fighter2018; darjeelingdarkroast; smuckles; PiperIBarelyKnowHer; welcome2thejam; imrlynotonreddit; kvothetyrion; thedoctordances1940; b_o_g_o (of the BogoLomo Rate Collective); MCK_OH; TiltControls; u/chug-a-lug-donna; u/TakeOnMeByA-ha; u/indie_fan_; u/bilbodabag, zenits, saison_Marguerite, and tons of people on popheads.
Formatting

You may also and are generally encouraged to leave comments with your scores!

2024.05.14 13:03 ThrowRAxpplexanana How do I (F20) explain to my cousin (M24) that his bestie (M20) is jealous of him?

Edit: sorry, I meant to say that cousin's bestie is M24, not 20.
Recently moved back to my hometown.
Being the only child to our respective parents, my cousin, Kevin was like an older bro to me and we were super close growing up. I moved away when I was 8, and we didn't keep in touch (no hard feelings. We were just too preoccupied with new friends and school, etc).
Since I returned home about 9 months ago, we've been hanging out just like old times. I was introduced to his girlfriend, Tina, whom Kevin has been dating for little over a year now. She herself is still pretty new to Kevin's friends group, but really made me feel welcome to the group.
Kevin also introduced me to his high school best friend, Andy and his girlfriend, Hannah, who both initially seemed cool. But the more I've hung out with them all, the more I've felt something off about them two.
It started with the mean or sarcastic comments masked as jokes at Kevin's (and in her absence, Tina's) expense. Kev doesn't seem to notice. I get the feeling Andy's resentful of Kevin and Tina being all loved up and spending a lot of time together. I think he feels replaced by Tina? I also think Hannah is a little bit intimidated, or feels insecure around her.
Anyway, KT went away on a little trip about a month ago for their 1 yr anniversary, and I've not been in contact with AH in Kev's absence. But I've been noticing stuff, small, subtle things that make me wonder..
While KT have been posting about their time in Mexico- I, as well as KT's friends have all been watching them enjoying their time.
One day, Hannah posted a carousel of pics of her on holiday. It was so random because the pics are from a holiday she went on last year. I guess it didn't necessarily mean anything... but my brain did clock it for some reason. I got the impression that she felt envious seeing KT abroad and felt she had to compete? Idk, does anyone get what I mean? Idk how to explain it to KT.
KT returned eventually and life went on as normal. Then AH went on holiday 2 weeks ago, all friends knew beforehand except Kevin (Tina and myself). Kev was surprised, confused, and a little hurt that Andy didn't say anything to let him know. I thought it was interesting that AH went to the same destination as KT, even copying their travel itinerary, but not once acknowledging that they were inspired by KT.
I feel protective of KT and want to warn them about fake/jealous friends, and to remind them of the potential consequences of having such people around. But I feel like they'd think I'm just reading too much into the meaning of possibly why Hannah posted those pics recently, and her and Andy's holiday destination choice? How do I explain to them or I should just keep quiet until more substantial evidence presents itself in AH's actions.

2024.05.14 12:51 PinoySummonerKid28 What was your first M rated video game that you've ever played as a kid?

My first ever video game that I've ever played was Quake II on PS1 last 2004. I was 10 years old during that time and I'm very surprised that it has blood and gore. 4 years later, I've played Unreal Tournament (1999) on the PC and it was fun to play using practice matches with bots and that game got me hooked because it's a stress reliever after doing assignments during my 2nd year of high school.
How about you, guys? What will be your first M rated video game that you've ever played as a kid?

2024.05.14 12:50 Sea_Working5429 Hugely disappointing Uni Experience

I (22M) am a 3rd-year Political Science Student in Denmark.
Lately, Uni has been very boring and I am losing motivation. The academic side is fine, even though I had to take a few classes this semester that didn´t appeal to me much. But other than that, I am fairly content with my career choice and look forward to starting my career, although the job opportunities doesn´t seem to promising.
What has been bothering me lately though, is that there is literally, no social life on Campus anymore. Literally none. It has gotten to a point where everyone talks to 3-to 4 different people at best leaves, at the exact minute the class is over, and rarely shows up at events. At our annual Christmas party, only about 10% of my class showed up, including the people I went with. There is no feeling of a "we". Few common events, shared jokes, nothing like that. We just seem to be individuals, who have to read the same texts, but otherwise share nothing.
I think there are a few reasons for this.
Number one is that my program is very self-study-heavy. There are no expectations that you even show up, let alone contribute to any meaningful discussions or social life. During one semester, we only had about 6 hours of in-person classes each week.
Number two is that clubs and student associations are difficult to join if you don´t already have a strong network. That excludes a lot of students from even participating in extracurriculars.
Number three is that we have no shared symbols, traditions, or anything. Besides a few events, that few attend, there is nothing common to all of us. This might be partly due to my university being fairly "new" (it was founded in the 1960s), but it is a shame. What is supposed to make Uni unique just isn´t there.
Now, it is not that I am lonely. I know practically all of my class personally. I have plenty of hobbies and good friends. I am in a very positive and supportive relationship. I also do quite well financially, since I have worked part-time in a fairly high-paying job since graduating High School. I might also partly be to blame since I am often out of town for my hobbies, and for seeing my partner who lives somewhat far away. But then again, should I just sit around for something that, despite my best efforts might never happen?
On the flip side, my first year was awesome, and the polar opposite of what I mentioned above. I just want to have that life again. I want to be young and have a fun Uni experience that would last for more than just a short year.
Currently, I am kind of waiting to graduate which will happen in around a month. Not that I am ready for it, but it honestly feels like a very attractive alternative to the current situation.

2024.05.14 12:21 LadyDairhean Generations

The Great Depression had a significant and lasting impact on society, especially in the Dust Bowl states. Oklahoma suffered the worst and is still suffering from its effects. The stock market crashed in 1929. This was 11 years after the end of WWI when a lot of working age men were killed. My father was 19 years old. Children age 4 and older had to go to work in the fields harvesting and hoeing weeds. My maternal grandmother who was born in 1932 cut broomcorn and picked cotton by hand. The International Harvester for cotton was invented in 1940, but only came into widespread use by 1970. The broomcorn industry died out in 1980. Older boys age 11 and up went to work in sawmills and the trades. Watch the movie Walk the Line. Johnny Cash’s older brother of 14 was almost cut vertically in half when he slipped and was cut through the sternum by a large saw blade. Can you imagine being that young and handling dangerous machinery with no safety equipment? Safety equipment didn’t exist back then and neither did child labor laws. Those old Boomer children worked just as hard as adults to help feed their families. They were punished for playing. They had to suck it up and endure extreme hardship just to eat and they ate very little. Everyone was starving and filthy. There was as no indoor plumbing, no electricity and no air conditioning. I watched my grandmother work from sun up to exhaustion and she slept in her clothes. When she died, her bra strap hooks were rusted from sweat because she never removed it, meaning she hadn’t bathed in decades. She was 4-8” and wore a child size medium. She was conditioned to hard work and starvation. She and her family including my mother never overcame the effects of the Depression. She was functionally illiterate despite graduating high school in 1948.
Education stopped at third-fourth grade for the average child because parents were extremely poor and couldn’t afford to pay for schooling. School was different then. Teachers lived in a teacherage provided by the school district and earned a living stipend from the state to teach grades 1-4 how to read, write, sign their names, cipher, count money and read a watch. That was the extent of free education. Advanced learning after 4rth grade was taught by subscription very similar to private tutoring. Grades 5-7 were called grade school. Grades 7-12 were called high school. They didn’t have Junior High.
In 1935, the Second New Deal created the Works Progress / Projects Administration (WPA) to help people recover from the Depression. A lot of new schools were built during this period. Schools were funded with a combination of state aid and a tax levy called a mill collected from every resident in a school district. When Boomers say they shouldn’t have to pay a school tax because they don’t have children in school, this is what they’re referring to. They had the right to vote against a tax levy. These days, we call them temporary sales tax increases to fund things like new gym equipment. Everyone inside the school district votes on the increase and everyone inside and outside the district has to pay the sales tax if they shop at a store in the district. These no-voters will shop outside the district if the tax increase passes.
Fast forward to WWII (1939-1945) and the Korean War (1950-1953) and we see a significant decrease in school attendance that results in the closure of many rural schools. Many of this second generation of Boomers grew up in boarding schools and orphanages because their mothers couldn’t afford to feed them. This period resulted in a high population of youth being institutionalized. One of my grandmother’s sisters was raped by her uncle at age 14 and was sent to an asylum for the mentally ill. My mother (born 1952) and her sisters were taken by DHS (called CPS today) and sent to a girl’s state school after their father died of cirrhosis at the age of 42. He was a bootlegger who literally drank himself to death. Prohibition (1920-1933) was another result of the Depression. It lasted until 1952 in Oklahoma. Forced sterilization in mental institutions was outlawed in 1951 for the sake of medical study. The practice began in 1931 because the state believed that mental illness/retardation was genetic and caused by incest/inbreeding. It runs in my mother’s family so I can confirm the state was right. Mutations in the brain can be passed from mother to child.
The third generation of Boomers was born during the Vietnam War (1955-1975). I was born in 1973, so I’m technically Gen X with Boomer influences but not to the point that I’m a raging psycho. I consider those born in the 60s to be the third Boomer generation. My town lost its high school in 1968 and stopped at the eighth grade. All those who graduated from the 60s-1980 are the anti education gatekeepers of the workforce that I’m personally struggling with. These are the people who hate anyone with an education level above theirs. They’re offended by education unless you’re a doctor or a lawyer and they can use you. They are also anti-technology and refuse to use it. They are bullies who are socially enmeshed and always in your business. This generation of women married older men because men their age were fighting in a war. Or, they married wealthy men. Those women didn’t have to work and became bored housewives. I blame daytime soap operas for teaching these idiots their horrible social skills. They stayed home almost 24/7 except for when they were at the hair salon or shopping. They wore a lot of makeup too and nail polish contained formaldehyde. The amount of lead and toxic chemicals they were exposed to was very high. My mother was in this category from 1970-1980 when she divorced my father. Men who came home from the war were addicted to heroin and may have turned to cocaine, crack or meth. Many ended up homeless or hooked up with women for the welfare benefits. They were insanely abusive. Very few were able to adjust. Women who did not marry well, had to work cash jobs to support themselves and they might have qualified for USDA commodities and food stamps under Johnson’s War on Poverty (1964). We didn’t have welfare reform until 1996. My mother became an alcoholic and was addicted to amphetamines sold as diet pills in the 80s. We had pure meth from 1980 that my stepdad was addicted to and an explosion of brown meth from 1994 to the present. Almost this entire generation and my own Gen X either experimented or became addicted to meth. It affected Millennials too.
Child prostitution as a means of survival and CSA were common during the Depression because there was no law against it and it’s something society has difficulty grappling with. Oklahoma passed its first anti-child molestation law in 1945 after the end of WWII. I remember those old Boomer women saying that talk about sex was vulgar and those matters weren’t discussed. It was swept under the rug until 1990 when teens finally began to speak out. We had an explosion of violent rape and domestic violence in the 90s by Boomers and chauvinists who couldn’t bear to give up their right to sex on demand and beating women.
We got the Department of Education and mandatory attendance in 1980 so Gen X was the first generation to have a well rounded education since 1929. All the generations that came before us are jealous because we also got child labor laws and the statutory rape law. We’re the first generation that didn’t have to endure backbreaking work as children. We got easy jobs like paper routes, babysitting and mowing. As teenagers, farm kids hauled hay but that’s about as strenuous as it got. Many Gen Xers got pregnant young and had to drop out of school or couldn’t go to college. They had to get married and raise a family. I’m struggling with this portion of my generation being jealous as well.
I think Gen Z is the best generation because they are so far removed from the absolute hell that previous generations went through. They have the best education, the best social skills and are the most well adjusted of all the generations that came before them. Gen X just needs to teach ya’ll life skills and survival skills that you can hand down to Gen Alpha.
