2024.05.14 01:03 __kaleidoscope $2500 Budget for my first gaming/streaming PC

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.
I primarily use my PC for:
I'll usually have my web browser and a Discord call in the background.
I stream either games or art 5-7 days/week. An average stream is about 4-6 hours, but it can go up to 12 hours per session for several weeks. Otherwise I work on art commissions and editing.
Currently, FFXIV sits comfortably around 144 FPS on low settings, and most games run fine at 60+ FPS on medium. So I'd like to keep it about the same, if not better. I have no interest in running games at high/maximum settings, but if the PC can do that, then cool 👍
2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?
$2500. I don't mind going over if the price is right, but no more than $3000 please.
3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Within the next 1-2 weeks.
4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: toweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Tower & OS.
5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.
6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?
Not at all.
7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-towefull-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
No preference, as long as cable management is happy. White would be cool, but whatever is fine. I'll probably put the tower either under my standing desk (>26") or beside it, so no preference on height.
9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.
Yes. 64-bit
10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?
If the computer can last at least 6 years without upgrading, that would be solid. Ideally I'd just swap parts, but if the build works, I'll probably gift and/or build another one for my family in the future.
11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)
I stream on Twitch with OBS, so I'd like to try NVIDIA if possible. But honestly, if it performs well, I'll take it.
12. What are the specs of your old PC / laptop? Do you want to see if it can be upgraded instead? If so, paste its build from PCPartPicker here.
(2021) Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH6A: AMD Ryzen 5 5600H, AMD Radeon RX 6600M 8GB, 512GB SSD
13. Extra info or particulars:
I'll be giving my current laptop to my dad! I'm mostly happy with it, but I want to upgrade to a PC after using laptops for over a decade lol.
One issue I have currently: Regardless if I stream online or record offline, sometimes the audio is distorted for a few seconds (however, there are no issues with hearing my microphone nor frame dropping). I've never encountered this issue with my older PC (~2015) or when I was using my previous mic (now broken).
I suspect my issues stem from a combination of stream bitrate, too many active USB ports/externals, microphone, or just plain user error. I don't think the issue is related to AMD or sound bitrate necessarily, since the laptop had no issues with streaming in the first few years. But honestly, I don't know, my friends don't know either, and I'm too afraid to change anything more lmao.
I have plans to replace my keyboard, don't worry đŸ„Č I've gotten many recommendations lmao.
I have no experience with building PCs or comparing parts, so I'd appreciate any advice! One of my friends offered to help build the PC, and I'll be looking up guides too 👍

Comparing the HTT strategies for each of the main families
Fair warning, this is gonna be a long one :)
I started working on this for my own purposes because I’m fascinated by the similarities and differences between the HTT styling approaches Kibbe recommends for the different ID families, but then thought it might be helpful to share with the sub. I always see lots of mention of “lines,” but the overall HTT approach for each ID is sometimes (often) oversimplified. Plus all the other very fun elements that make up a HTT are, imo, getting short shrift! There are a few users who have posted amazing full HTTs for their IDs and I'm hoping even more people will be inspired to explore.
So what even is this post?
Basically, I went through the styling directives in Metamorphosis (Chapter 4) for the main families and directly compared the recommendations for the IDs on a number of smaller, more discrete variables because my brain finds it more digestible that way. I only did the main families because “you’re a [insert family here] first and foremost!!” is a thing regardless of your ID ;) And I thought it was more interesting to compare the elements of the pure families without the influence of any other undercurrents. Also it just would have been a lot of work to do all of them 🙃.
A few notes before getting to the good stuff
  • I tried to mostly focus on the words Kibbe uses to evoke feelings rather than specific items, since the book was written in the 80s and clothing is obviously quite different.
  • Some of the things that fall in the middle of a scale have debateable positioning since the middles are sometimes hard to compare (ex. Is a moderate pinstripe more angular or less angular than a soft-edged plaid? My vote was more angular but your vote could be the opposite!) I included all of the language I used to determine placement on the scales so you can make your own call if you want.
  • I disincluded some, ahem, charged descriptors in a few IDs but I don’t think it changes the overall picture painted of what that ID would be looking to channel in their HTTs
This post includes all of the scales I compared the families on in 6 main categories - silhouette, fabric, detail, prints, color, and accessories - plus some keywords that came up for each family that give the overall impression of the HTT. I might make a second part later with key similarities and differences between the approaches for each pair of families, but we'll see! I'm also interested in any discussion here or observations that others might have on the various categories :)
And of course you can always read Metamorphosis for yourself in full here, which I highly recommend!

1. Silhouette

This section is related to the base silhouette of an outfit - the overall shape of garments that make up a HTT and how they relate to one another. For the purposes of this category, I'm defining "ensemble" as the pieces look related or like they were purchased together, which I believe is the sense Kibbe uses it in.
https://preview.redd.it/8earo8fbm70d1.jpg?width=1965&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=40f17625fbfc45cc723b9cc83d447111428d8b02
Shapes
  • D - “keep shapes sharp and geometric. Triangles, rectangles, and everything sculpted, sleek, and elongated, with crisp edges.” “square, sharp shoulders”
  • R - “keep your shapes rounded with soft edges! Circles, ornate swirls, and intricate flowing shapes” “shoulders should be curved”
  • C - “slightly geometric or slightly curved, blend the same shapes together in your look” “slight, crisp shoulder padding”
  • N - “geometric shapes with soft or rounded edges are the key. Rounded-edged rectangles. Soft oblongs, rounded-edged squares, irregular shapes, and soft asymmetrics.” “soft-edged shoulder pads are very good”
  • G - “small, sharp geometrics” “sharp edges and crisp tailoring” “crisp” “sharp edges and extreme tailoring and construction” “sharp shoulder pads”
Outline quality
  • D - “Always straight, with elongated draping that is sleek”
  • R - “your outline should always be soft and flowing” “lots of gentle draping everywhere” “soft fluidity”
  • C - “smooth and symmetrical with the emphasis on controlled and even edges, soft, straight lines, or smoothly curved lines - softly tailored or slightly flowing.”
  • N - “a relaxed, straight line is the outline of your look”
  • G - “sharp, straight, and staccato” “severe lines with sharp edges” “broken, staccato, animated outline. Utilizing many short vertical lines and many short horizontal lines is also effective.”
Closeness of fit
  • D - “always tailored and sculpted” “streamlined shape” “tailored and sleek” “the more tailored the better”
  • R - “showcase the lush curves of your body” “Sleeves should be tapered at the wrist” “waistline should always be emphasized, with soft gathers, folds, draped sashes, and lightweight and supple belts to give a cinched effect” “[Jackets] should be fitted at the waist”
  • C - “very slight draping in constructed garments” “crisp and finished cuffs” “tailored pleats” “narrow and tailored [jackets] with a smooth outline.” “lightweight unconstructed jackets are fine when they are kept sleek and narrow. Blazers, cardigan-style, elongated Chanel (not cropped) are all good choices” “softly tailored”
  • N - “softly tailored, always unconstructed” “Your outline should be fairly narrow and slim, in a loose and easy way.” “Dropped waist detail (loose sashes, overbloused tops, ties, etc) is excellent, as are slightly dropped shoulders.” “Relaxed shapes” “relaxed and easy fit” “dresses should be simple and unconstructed, with a narrow shape and a relaxed outline.”
  • G - “Precision fitted and crisply tailored” “[a] precisely fitted silhouette is crucial to your look” “Sharp and narrow waist definition.” “very fitted” “[skirts] should be very fitted at the waistband” “Pants should always be very sharply tailored with outlined or animated detail at the edges (waistbands, pleats, crisp cuffs).” “Skin tight stretchy pants are excellent” “Very tailored [blouses] with sharp edges and crisp detail (collars, cuffs, pleats, etc.)”
Length of garments
  • D - “Long, vertical lines are essential.” “generally [jackets] should be long (ending at the mid-thigh area), although a very sleek, Italian-style might be cropped (be sure this has an extremely sculpted, streamlined shape)” “straight and long [skirts]” “a long hem” “long cardigans or pullovers”
  • R - "lengths should be kept gracefully long as uneven hemlines (mid-calf), and short as the tapered styles with an even hemline (mid kneecap)" "[for sweaters] short lengths with waist detail"
  • C - “standard length is best [for jackets] (just below break of hip)” “slightly longer jackets are possible when the corresponding skirt is elongated to match.” “moderate length [skirts]”
  • N - “Elongated [jackets] (ending from the upper thigh on down.)” “Moderate length [skirts]” “Very short skirts for fun/funky looks.” “Nearly all styles [of pants] are excellent, from very casual to very dressy
short, cropped, or long.” “Any and all lengths [for sweaters]”
  • G - “Short, cropped [jackets]” “Straight, sharp, and short [skirts]” “A slightly flared hemline [on skirts] may be slightly longer (top of the calf). Anything extremely long is very tricky, and must have a slit and be pencil slim.” “[For pants] Short lengths, anywhere from cropped at the calf to the top of the ankle.” “Short, cropped cardigans” “Short cropped jackets, vests, and boleros work well with dresses for you”
Cohesion
  • D - “keep individual pieces blended together in an artful way for elegance”
  • R - “include an artful blending of plush textures, draped fabrics, and luxurious colors” “avoid any kind of harsh contrast between top and bottom”
  • C - “A clean, unbroken silhouette is your most elegant statement! Think ‘head-to-toe’, and blend everything accordingly.” “Use [separates] carefully and sparingly” “Make sure colors, textures, and prints blend together”
  • N - “Separates are extremely exciting on you, and should make up the bulk of your wardrobe” “you’ll do better with an artful mixture of patterns, textures and colors than you will with an overly matched look” “designer sportswear” “definitely mix n’ match in the most sophisticated sense of the word”
  • G - “A use of well-coordinated separates with lots of animated and colorful detail can be very exciting to your look.”
Some random observations from me about this category
  • N fam has a truly impressive amount of versatility in terms of the length of pieces they're recommended, probably because they're the only family that's really strongly encouraged to go whole hog with a mix and match/separates-forward approach (a superpower tbh).
  • Although the scale of pieces recommended are obviously quite different, the words he uses to describe the shapes for D and G fams are extremely similar. Definitely two families that benefit from an emphasis on crisp sharpness and angularity.
  • I thought it was interesting that he used "softly tailored" in both the C and N fam sections, although the effect they're going for is very different (blended understated elegance vs. relaxed funky easy vibes).
  • He never uses the word "wide" in the N fam section. He does, however, use "narrow" and "loosely tailored" a number of times 😈 No oversized shapeless potato sacks here!

2. Fabric

This category is pretty self-explanatory I hope!
https://preview.redd.it/94e76p19190d1.jpg?width=1976&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=816214030ae525dd16ec2e071426eab1e571c544
Definition
  • D - “fabrics that hold a defined shape are necessary”
  • R - “fabrics that drape easily” “flowing”
  • C - “beautiful, luscious fabrics are an important element in your understated look” “very slight draping in constructed garments.”
  • N - “loose and easy”
  • G - “must always be crisp, able to hold a defined shape, and be tailored easily”
Range of textures (how many different fabrics can they use)
  • D - “Moderate to heavyweights are best, with a matte finish and a smooth surface” “textures should be tightly woven, and shiny fabrics should be very stiff and ultraglitzy”
  • R - “softly woven fabrics” “ultrashiny fabrics” “ultrasoft or plush textures” “sheer fabrics” “any kind of sparkle is excellent”
  • C - “Matte finish or slight sheen.” “Luxurious to the touch” “lightweight textures” “smooth knits” “smooth chiffon and elegantly beaded fabrics for evening.”
  • N - “All soft textures are excellent” “any fabric with a rough or nubby surface” “any wrinkly fabric works well” “all woven fabrics” “knits are excellent in nearly any weight and thickness, from very finely woven to very heavy and rough” “Plush velours, suede, and soft leather are perfect” “drapable fabrics are best kept to heavier weight jerseys.” “A matte finish is far superior to sheen for daytime” “In the evening, you can go very glitzy with hard-finished sheens”
  • G - “a flat surface or light texture is best” “finely woven knits, especially when ribbed and skinny, are good choices.” “matte finish is best, although hard-finished sheens can be very exciting (especially metallics)”
Weight
  • D - “Moderate to heavyweights are best” “occasionally lightweight fabrics can work if they are extra-structured in the design of the garment”
  • R - “lightweight fabrics”
  • C - “moderate weights. Lightweights in very constructed or tailored garments.”
  • N - "knits are excellent in nearly any weight and thickness, from very finely woven to very heavy and rough." “moderate weights are best, although textures can easily be lighter”
  • G - “usually your fabric will be of moderate weight, though lighter weights that hug the body are excellent”
Some random observations from me about this category
  • Again lots of similarities for G and D fam as far as structure and matte finish, although D also has heavier structured wovens while G has fine knits.
  • R fam and N fam get by far the most diverse recommendations as far as fabric and textures go (again a ton of versatility in N fam!). Seems like you really can't go wrong with something sparkly, shiny, glitzy, or plushy if you're in R fam. And for N fam it sounds like you get to mix far more textures into one HTT than everybody else does, which is exciting!
  • I thought the emphasis on flowing for R fam was interesting. It makes total sense - I haven't read too deeply into R since I am clearly not one lol - but for some reason I had flowing associated with N in my mind.
  • I really love the C recommendations myself - "luscious fabrics" just makes me think about burrowing in a cashmere blanket haha. I could definitely picture Grace Kelly as I was reading them.

3. Prints

Also self-explanatory!
https://preview.redd.it/nn24my93490d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a8d47c3a4d4d5984b6cac8d9deeccdf7da834c4
Pattern
  • D - “bold and geometric: stripes, zigzags, asymmetrics, and irregular shapes.” “Think Picasso and strive for a contemporary feeling”
  • R - “rich and luscious with the emphasis on an abstract, watercolor blend (think Monet). Swirls of color, flowing together, with soft and rounded edges may be used in abundance.”
  • C - “symmetrical, evenly spaced, and regular or realistic patterns. Understated prints (pin dots, pinstripes, checks, blended plaids, herringbone, symmetrical paisleys, etc.)”
  • N - “casual styles that are soft-edged geometrics (plaids, stripes, paisleys, etc.) and funky prints in irregular shapes (abstract asymmetrics, leaves, animal prints, etc.).”
  • G - “Prints should be sharp, colorful, and animated. Small geometrics and angular asymmetrics are excellent. Most of your prints should be very contemporary in feeling (“Picasso-ish”) although humorous styles that are outlined and caricatured can be quite stunning on you as well.”
Contrast
  • D - “Bold color combinations and high-contrast blends work best”
  • R - “swirls of color, flowing together”
  • C - “Make sure colors, textures, and prints blend together” “understated”
  • N - “generally have a softly blended edge”
  • G - “colorful and animated” “outlined” “contrast”
Scale
  • D - “bold”
  • R - “luxuriously large: oversized florals or feathery shapes are especially lovely”
  • C - “understated”
  • N - “moderate scale to slightly large”
  • G - “small”
Some random observations from me about this category
  • Again lots of similarities for D and G for the type (sharp geometric) and feeling of prints (contemporary/Picasso) with the main difference being large vs. small scale (don't worry, they're about to diverge hardcore 😂)
  • R fam is recommended significantly more abstract and organic prints than everyone else. I also thought it was interesting that both D and R call for larger-scale prints - finally something in common!
  • For C fam it seems like the most important thing is that the prints blend in and are understated rather than drawing attention to themselves.
  • Preferring high contrast and sharp prints vs slightly more blended and soft ones seems like a notable difference between D/G and N fam.

4. Garment Detail

This category is related to the details within the confines of the outline of a garment. So things like necklines, collars, effects like beading and sequins, trim, buttons, etc etc.
https://preview.redd.it/342pwi6y390d1.jpg?width=1971&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64115f1045c7a3cb6d9ac1d6d843754ca943a603
Shape - sharp vs soft
  • D - “angular shapes” “sharp edges” “clean, angular necklines (plunging v’s, skinny turtlenecks, high Mandarins, slashed collars, halters
)” “anything tailored (crisp cuffs, sharp pleats, sharp lapels, etc.)”
  • R - “soft” “[Sleeves can be] very soft and flowing” “lapels should be curved, rounded, or shawl-collared” “gathers, tucks, or bouffant shapes” “any draped, gathered, or shirred touches are wonderful accents”
  • C - “clean, tailored necklines” “crisp and finished cuffs”
  • N - “Any unconstructed or loosely tailored detail works well.” “Simple necklines
are best, and you should concentrate on open necklines for your air of casual chic” “lapels should be tailored, notched, or clean (lapel-less).” “Cuffs should be very plain.”
  • G - “Detail should always be
sharp” “very crisp, staccato, broken up, and multicolored” “lots of crisp trim” “lots of outlining (collars, cuffs, waistbands, lapels) with piping of contrasting colors or fabric, braiding, beads, etc.” “Small, crisp pleats.” “Sharp, angular necklines - also small” “Small, crisp ties (ribbon, leather, etc.)” “Small, tailored lapels or crisp lapel-less with piping.” “Small, crisp cuffs.”
Scale - large vs small
  • D - “bold, sweeping geometrics”
  • R - “oversize bows, flouncy ruffles, and delicate lace are always good choices”
  • C - “[detail] should never call attention to itself”
  • N - “pleats should be soft and deep” “You can use small touches of hand embroidery or rough lace and eyelet for very simple trim.”
  • G - “Detail should always be small” “Small, crisp pleats.” “Sharp, angular necklines - also small” “Small, crisp ties (ribbon, leather, etc.)” “Small, tailored lapels or crisp lapel-less with piping.” “Small, crisp cuffs”
Complexity - clean vs intricate
  • D - “detail should always be clean and minimal”
  • R - “intricate, ornate
with an emphasis on framing your face” “Sleeves should be tapered at the wrist with intricate buttons” “any kind of sparkle is excellent (pearls, sequins, beading, etc.)” “belt buckles should always be intricate” “the more intricate or antique looking your buttons are the better” “ornate detail” “ornate necklines”
  • C - “clean, simple, and minimal - just enough to add an elegantly understated touch.” “never call attention to itself” “clean lines” “minimal detail” “minimum of detail”
  • N - “detail should be kept minimal. Plain and simple is best for you.” “gathers should be minimal” “simple tailored styles with minimal detail” “Simple shapes with easy fits” “Minimal detail”
  • G - “an overabundance of detail” “You can never wear too much detail! An abundance of it and everywhere in your look is one of the most effective tools you have for capturing your animated effervescence!” “Detail should always
call attention to itself (not blend into the lines of your garments)” “lots of animated and colorful detail” “Collar, cuff, lapel, and waistband detail (outlining, trim, piping, ribbing) are essential”
Some random observations from me about this category
  • A very stark divide here between the families that lean minimal/clean (C, N, D) and the families that lean complex (R, G)!
  • Even though R and G both call for a lot of detail, G fam seems to like it literally everywhere (but especially at the edges) while R focuses on framing the face. Another difference between them is that G detail is high contrast, sharp, and colorful while R fam's detail tends to the ornate, flowing, intricate, and sparkly - very different shapes I think.
  • Finally a category where N fam is not running away with the versatility haha - it seems like a more minimal and clean approach to detail really helps them shine.

5. Color

Y'all know what colors are :)
https://preview.redd.it/5he7hmfk790d1.jpg?width=1949&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc59971dc9518bfbd276300feccba5838f4d7971
Number
  • D - “Always think ‘head-to-toe’ with your color schemes” “All monochromatic schemes are excellent”
  • R - “include an artful blending of
 luxurious colors”
  • C - “Make sure colors, textures, and prints blend together” “monochromatic schemes are excellent, although you do not need to be limited to just one or two colors.”
  • N - “Color is an area in which you should have lots of fun! Strive for zip, verve, and lots of pizzazz with bolds, brights, pastels, vivids, and wild color combinations - anything imaginative.” “Break all the rules when it comes to color! Mix ‘n match with ease.”
  • G - “lots of animated and colorful detail can be very exciting to your look” “Your use of color should be bold and sassy; break all the rules here! Multicolored splashes are perfect. Bright and shockingly colored accessories played against a dark or light background. High, sharp contrast and wild color combinations are all very chic on you. Break your line with color!”
Effect
  • D - “color combination should be bold but elegant. Combining bright shades with dark shades achieves this with ease.”
  • R - “should emphasize a watercolor palette of soft pastels and luscious brights.” “rich, luxuriously blended colors” “pale neutrals
 are your best accents”
  • C - “accentuate your smoothly blended visual outline. This means that a mixture of colors in an outfit should blend together in intensity so as not to disrupt your clean and smooth silhouette.” “The key is to make sure the tones (intensities) blend, instead of contrasting.”
  • N - “Strive for zip, verve, and lots of pizzazz with bolds, brights, pastels, vivids, and wild color combinations - anything imaginative. Neutrals work well when they are used in beautifully textured fabrics
but you will feel a little dull without a few bright accents, either in accessories or jewelry.” “Colors can be very wild and unusual if you wish, or more muted and earthy-looking”
  • G - “bold and sassy” “Multicolored splashes” “Bright and shockingly colored accessories played against a dark or light background.” “High, sharp contrast and wild color combinations”
Some random observations from me about this category
  • It's been said before but D fam's inability to do anything but monochrome has been greatly exaggerated. Outfits can have high contrast colors as long as they still read bold and sleek!
  • I found it interesting that both C fam and R fam call for a blended effect.
  • Color seems like a key category to focus on for both N fam and G fam - bold color kings/queens 👑

6. Accessories

The category for everything else - bags, hats, shoes, jewelry, belts, etc etc.
https://preview.redd.it/ek7fu7oz790d1.jpg?width=1923&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c24f3db63656cef4a8da916665ba0f19893cc86
Scale
  • D - “Belts should be bold and wide” “Metal belts will be sculpted and quite large.” “[Hats should have] wide brims” “[Jewelry should have] an emphasis on bold, modern shapes.” “[For jewelry,] Pieces should be large but not overly bulky.”
  • R - “The effect may be lavish, but the workmanship should be intricate and delicate.” “delicate [shoes]” “[For bags,] Delicate shoulder straps. Elegantly slim briefcases.” “Jewelry should always be delicate and lavish, with intricate and ornate touches. Rounded shapes, curves, swirls, and lots of dangles”
  • C - “slender pumps” “narrow heels” “moderate size [bags]” “slim and elegant” “keep [belts] elegant, slim, and narrow with small smooth buckles” “small and crisp [hats] with even brims” “Small [jewelry]”
  • N - “moderate-sized [bags]” “Jewelry should be kept on the chunky side” “It is possible to get away with very minimal chains, tiny diamond studs, etc., but chances are you won’t be satisfied with this once you experiment with a zippier look!”
  • G - “All accessories should be small, crisp, geometric, and colorful” “Small, crisp geometrics [for bags]” “[Belts] may be narrow to moderately wide.” “Small, crisply tailored hats.” “Jewelry should be small and sharp.”
Shape
  • D - “All accessories should be crisp, sharply tailored, and angular with geometric shapes. Keep everything sleek and contemporary in feeling.” “High, straight heels, crisp soles, and elegantly tapering toes.” “Angular envelopes, clutches, or structured briefcases.” “[For jewelry,] thin sharp pieces are good choices, as are avant-garde works of art.”
  • R - “softly sophisticated.” “[Shoes of] Lightweight and supple leather.” “[For bags,] small, rounded shapes. Soft, supple leather or fabric.” [For belts,] soft and supple leather or fabric.” “Soft, curvy [hats]” “Large, fluffy fur hats.”
  • C - “elegant scarves in symmetrical ties” “tapered toes” “elegant leather” “softly tailored flats” “crisply tailored [bags]” “supple leather [bags]” “tailored, symmetrical shape[d hats]” “Keep your jewelry elegant, smooth, and symmetrical” “Small, slightly geometric shapes [in jewelry] are good, as are smoothly curved swirls.”
  • N - “Unconstructed styles with soft or rounded-edged geometric shapes are most effective.” “high heels should be very angular and straight, not tapered” “unconstructed pouches” “Simple geometrics in supple leather” “softly geometric [belts]” “unconstructed [hats]. Large, loose, and floppy. Shaggy-haired fur.” “Soft or rounded-edged geometrics [for jewelry]”
  • G - “All accessories should be small, crisp, geometric, and colorful” “tailored and angular [shoes] in lightweight leather. Unusual shapes in toes and heels are excellent (asymmetrics, wedges, sharp points, etc.) as are bold colors and printed fabric.” “Small, crisp geometrics [for bags]” “Stiff leather [belts] with geometric buckles.” “Jewelry should be small and sharp and in geometric, asymmetrical, or irregular shapes.”
Detail
  • D - “sleek & elegant”
  • R - “ornate” “strappy, slender-heeled [shoes] with tapered or open toes” “[Flats] with ornamentation” “[For bags,] Ornamentation or luxurious detail (beads, gathers, trim).” “[For belts,] All beaded, bejeweled, or sparkly styles are excellent.” “belts are a focal point, and should be selected as carefully as a fine piece of jewelry” “Jewelry should always be delicate and lavish, with intricate and ornate touches. Rounded shapes, curves, swirls, and lots of dangles
 sparkly materials are essential
and an antique, baroque, or rococo effect is desirable.”
  • C - “simple, clean, and elegant” “Be careful not to overdo! Go elegant instead of extreme.”
  • N - “Accessories should be kept minimal; plain and simple is your best look here” “evening sandals should be very bare, not strappy” “belts should be simple” “[For jewelry, think] “wearable art”... or it can be bright and funky costume pieces that add pizzazz! Earthy materials are very elegant and sophisticated on you (copper, silver, amber, turquoise, etc.). Hard-finished enamels and glass are fun, especially when used in bold colors for vivid accents”
  • G - “[Accessories] should call attention to themselves as detail” “Contrast is being strived for with your use of accessories, as well as bringing out your wit and a sense of fun.” “[For shoes] bold colors and printed fabric. Flats of all kinds should always be funky and fun (patent leather, trimmed, etc.)” “Brightly colored belts are excellent aids in breaking your line.” “[For jewelry] Brightly colored enamel, stone, or glass are best. Very contemporary avant-garde pieces are excellent on you, as are trendy pieces that accentuate your wit.”
Some random observations from me about this category
  • In keeping with the general themes, D fam again shines more with much bolder or larger scale accessories than everyone else, although they don't need a ton of detail within them. The overall shape seems to do most of the heavy lifting.
  • In contrast, G fam and R fam once again call for a lot of detail within their accessories. They also get the most fun-sounding shoes (to me, a magpie).
  • And again N, C, and D have the cleaner strategies for accessories, although N does have a more G-like approach recommended for fun colorful jewelry.

2024.05.12 04:13 grassgame01 Mechanics I would like to see if From made a hypothetical sequel

I am fully aware that From currently has no plans for a sequel to Elden Ring. Regardless, I just wanted to discuss some mechanics I would like to see if a shiny new next-gen souls game was made. If you have any thoughts on these ideas or some ideas of your own, feel free to say so.
DISMEMBERMENT
Tail cutting in Dark Souls 1 was sick. Being able to hit a boss in a weakpoint, limit its moveset, and sometimes get an item out of it was sick, and I'd like to see this kind of idea expanded to be more all encompassing and maybe even apply to some non-boss enemies. Positional damage could be an extension of dismemberment. Graze an enemy's arm with your sword, deal less damage. Strike an enemy's weakpoint (head, neck, torso, giant eyeballs), deal bonus damage. I think this would serve as a good companion to the posture mechanics that Elden Ring introduced.
PERFECT GUARDS
This one is pretty simple. Defense in Elden Ring feels fairly one-dimensional as it is now. You dodge roll at the right time and that's about it. Guard Counters are fun but don't feel as important or powerful as the pre-release trailers made them out to be. Blocking is good if you have stamina, but a lot of lategame bosses discourage it (i.e. malenia healing on block or other bosses like maliketh with elemental attacks.) My suggestion is simply to add a mechanic in which holding block just before an attack hits you will both reduce the stamina consumption by about 30% and also increase the elemental resistances of whatever you blocked with. This can be done with shields, greatshields, and even weapons.
GUNS
If a large timeskip were to take place between Elden Ring and this hypothetical sequel, it would be sick to see the Lands Between (or whatever land succeeds it) have technological advancement. I'm obviously not suggesting they add glocks or assault rifles. I'm thinking primitive hand cannons or flintlocks, similar to bloodborne. Guns would be able to be equipped in either the main hand or offhand, but would mainly be intended as an offhand ranged tool. Unlike bloodborne, guns CANNOT parry. They are strictly for dealing physical damage, like a crossbow but cooler. To go along with the themes of tech being advanced, a new starting class could be a pirate who starts with a curved sword and a flintlock handgun.
MORE DODGE ANIMATIONS
This is more of a cosmetic change than a gameplay one. I would be lying if I said I didn't get sick of looking at the dodge roll animation when most bosses will regularly require you to dodge 4 times in succession. Games like Bloodborne and DMC 5 have both sidestep dodges and roll dodges implemented, so I think it'd be cool to see Fromsoft spice things up a bit. Hell, even Ocarina of Time in 1998 had rolls, sidehops, and backflips. I-framing through an attack that hits your upper body could result in a Sekiro-style crouch step animation, Dodging over a low sweep could do a roll or hop over the attack, dodging an overhead slam could be a bloodborne style sidestep. If the game isn't sure which animation to pull for an attack, it simply defaults to the standard roll as a fallback. This would for sure be hard to implement, but fromsoft is a AAA studio with a big budget now, so I like to think something like this could be doable.

2024.05.12 03:31 freifraufischer A (not so quick) and Dirty Guide for Four Year Fans of Rhythmic (who happen to be regular fans of Artistic Gymnastics)

A (not so quick) and Dirty Guide for Four Year Fans of Rhythmic (who happen to be regular fans of Artistic Gymnastics)
(This is a lose adaptation of a very long thread I posted on the bird site. It's meant as a summary so there are things in here that are overly broad but I mostly want to help artistic fans know what is going on in Rhythmic with Paris on the horizon.)
So you only watch Rhythmic Gymnastics every 4 years and OMG Paris is in a few months and you have no idea what your watching except dropping things is bad and wasn't this sport like super corrupt?
Let's start with the basics. In the ye olden times all female gymnasts used to do exercises with portable and non portable apparatus. So a balance beam would be non portable and things like clubs, or balls would be portable. What we know of as artistic gymnasts competed in team portable apparatus. This video is from the 1952 Olympics and at the .10 mark you can see the Hungarian team which includes the great Ágnes Keleti (HUN)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtZ9t_9O-b0
One of my favorite facts about Auntie Ágnes is that not only is she the oldest living Olympic champion at 103, a holocaust survivor and number 3 on the all time women's Olympic medal list... she's also a reigning Olympic champion as her team was the last to win gold on Team PA before the event was discontinued. A lot of things were changing in gymnastics in the 1950s, women stopped doing Rings, the uneven bars started evolving from just being a set of pbars set to different heights, and they stopped doing exercises with portable apparatus. It was in this period that the sport that we now know of as Rhythmic Gymnastics split off and embraced ways to make themselves different from Artistic Gymnastics. What I want to emphasize here is that Rhythmic is just as "old school" as Artistic.
It might be useful to point out here that in a lot of languages call MAG/WAG "Sport Gymnastics" (Russian) or "Apparatus Gymnastics" (many other European languages). In these contexts RG is often called "Artistic Gymnastics" because the sport emphasizes artistry so much more. The idea here is that this is a discipline that emphasizes more musicality, dance, formal ballet, and as a consequence they ban things like saltos. I'm mostly talking to people who are familiar with artistic gymnastics so think of this as "dance elements taken to 11".
Broadly a RG wants to keep the apparatus moving at all times as they perform elements, to avoid dropping it but also to avoid holding onto it with an obvious death grip. The ball should for instance sit in the hand, not be squeezed to keep hold. Here is a basic guide to ball handling by a British RGI (Individual Rhythmic Gymnast) and just understanding that basic foundation of handling really goes a long way to explain just how difficult the sport is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3MSLaVO-MM&t=246s
They throw the apparatus but your eye should stay on the gymnast not the flying apparatus as they do dance between the throw and the catch. If they catch the apparatus when they can't see it that's extra difficulty. Sometimes really terrible television camera crews will follow the apparatus in the air instead of the gymnast and this is very much worse than when they do face close ups on beam. All of the elements are what is happening UNDER the apparatus during the throw.
One of the things I find incredible about rhythmic gymnasts is just how smart they need to be in order to do their sport. We're talking a special and physical awareness that is second to none because they need that catch to appear natural and effortless. A hand should meet the apparatus you shouldn't stick your arm up and wait for it to arrive. You should be in the right place to catch it without having to move unnaturally out of your choreography or you will get a trajectory deduction. As a good casual rule of thumb, if you are seeing them trying hard to do something, something is wrong.
In fact, the ability of the gymnast to precisely control those throws means that when they do ribbon at the elite level they turn the air handling off in the arena so as not to influence the 6 meters of flying silk (that's almost 20 feet in freedom units). This adds a new level of awe when you realize that during ribbon qualification at last year's world's in Valencia, Spain it was 35 C (or 95 F). Please think about that later when I show you ribbon routines. And how toasty it will certainly be for athletes in Paris.
The apparatus are Hoop, Ball, Clubs, Ribbon, and Rope. Wait... what? Rope?! Yes. So they used to rotate between the 5 apparatus but Rope has fallen out of favor largely because it's difficult to read on TV, though many purists think it's the most difficult apparatus.
It's still competed among juniors and here is 2019 Junior Rope Apparatus World Champion Anastasia Simakova (RUS) (now GER)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-G47KnUCZY
Another useful thing to know about the apparatus is that the clubs can be connected together or disconnected and this will frequently happen during the course of routines. My favorite weird fact about rhythmic is that if the clubs go out of bounds while connected it counts as one apparatus, but if you yeet the clubs out of bounds while they are separated it's two for double the penalty. No really... I will never not find this funny for some reason.
https://preview.redd.it/205fhweiyvzc1.png?width=438&format=png&auto=webp&s=3c1693c4f044588989d107a5effa90dcd02a718f
As a note, Ribbon always scores lower than the other apparatus, and you don't just risk dropping it but knots or even tangling yourself up in the ribbon in a kind of sparkly auto-bondage happen more frequently than you might think.
RG scoring is fairly complicated but in brief: Difficulty, Execution, and Artistry scores which are combined together to create a total. Execution and Artistry are out of a 10.0. Think of Execution the same way you would in AG, somewhere in the 8s is good. You start to look for something fairly major wrong when you have an E in the low 7s, and anything below 7 for an Olympic contender was a car crash. Like .44 in this video where major Olympic contender Stiliana Nikolova (BUL) trips on the spare apparatus.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pbx4R4M3akk&t=44s
Difficulty is open ended and is broken up into DA (difficulty of apparatus handling) and DB (body difficulty). If you want a better summary than I could ever give you (if a little outdated because of updates), here is the 2022-24 code in 15 minutes from Clematis on youtube. It was made for a RG point of view but I think if you are used to the WAG code you can probably follow along well enough.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxIlbaiPJWY
Some gymnasts (like Nikolova and Darja Varfolomeev (GER)) build their routines on extremely high difficulty while others like Ekaterina Vedeneeva (SLO) and Daria Atamanov (ISR) concentrate on lower difficulty more securely done.
Rhythmic Group Gymnastics (RGG) is performed with 5 gymnasts together doing complex interacting choreography and exchanges. The apparatus for RGG changes every few years but always one routine is done with 5 of the same apparatus, and another with a mix of 2. The Paris quad RGG is 5 Hoops, and 3 Ribbons/2 Balls. People who want chaos wish for 10 Clubs but that's not in the cards for the next quad either.
If you aren't used to watching Rhythmic I promise you are probably better at spotting when things go wrong than you think. You may not know what it is, but "wait that's not right" comes quickly. Because the IOC hates fun, there are only two medal events at the Olympics, the All Around in RGI and the All Around in RGG. At world championships there is the All Around for both individuals and groups, but there are also apparatus finals. Because there are no apparatus medals at the Olympics we sometimes wont get to see the real masters of a given apparatus. Imagine if you never got to see Sanne Wever's beam because to get to the Olympics she had to be one of the top 24 All Arounders in the world.
Which is really an important thing to point out. There are only 24 individual rhythmic gymnasts at the Olympics. That is a TINY fraction of the competitive field. Relative to international competition there will be many highly competitive RGIs left home compared to WAGs. I want to dwell on that point for a moment so I'm going to apply the RGI Olympic qualifying procedure to the Artistic field. Rhythmic worlds Olympic QFers were all non-nominative, meaning the place is awarded to the country not the gymnast by name.
If WAG Olympic QF looked like RGI:
  • 2022 Worlds BRA, USA, GBR
  • 2023 Worlds USA, CAN, BRA, ITA, CHN, CHN, FRA, NED, ALG, GBR, AUS, ITA, ROU, GER
  • Continental Spots MEX, EGY, JPN, BEL, NZL
  • Reallocated Host Spot KOR
  • Plus a universality spot.
Congrats, each of those flags is 1 of your favorites. You only get 1 dutch WAG, who are you picking? You only get 2 Italians. We know what a bloodbath it was the last time the Romanians had to pick 1 WAG to go to the Olympics...
Back to the real world there are some heart breakers. There are 4 Bulgarians in the top 12 All Arounders this year. They have 2 spots in Paris. Other countries like Germany, Italy, and Ukraine will be leaving at least one great gymnast at home.
I'm going to go through the likely Olympic field, as well as some that will not make the Olympics because they deserve their flowers too. These routines are, for the most part, the their top scoring routines from 2024, or if I thought a 2023 Worlds routine is a better representative I've used that. For the top 5 All Arounders this year I'm showing you a routine on each apparatus.
  • 😁= Going to be in Paris
  • 😊= Likely to be in Paris
  • 😑= Their country earned a spot and they could theoretically get named but aren't likely
  • 😔= Will not be in Paris
😊 Stiliana Nikolova (BUL)
I call Nikolova "Rhythmic Flavia" after her long lost sister Flavia Saraiva in every sense of the word. Incredibly talented. Incredibly beautiful. But also a reputation for errors in finals that hold her back. She qualified in 1st for the AA at 2023 Worlds but came in 4th in the final. Remember what I said about how you can probably spot something wrong with "that doesn't look natural?"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLPt-3rifnA&t=119s
By the way, she's 18, just very short which isn't that common for a rhythmic gymnast. Her father was a professional football player and played in the 1986 FIFA World Cup for Bulgaria... continuing my theme of elite gymnasts with international footballer fathers.
😊 Sofia Raffaeli (ITA)
Sofia Raffaeli is the 2022 World Champion and the 2023 World Silver Medalist. She had a pretty major coaching change last year that was very disruptive and it's my perception that she has been doing a lot of tinkering with her routines.
😊 Daria Atamanov (ISR)
Are you starting to get a theme of music pandering to the Paris audience yet?
Atamanov was on a roll in 2022 as the European Champion (which means a LOT in RG), 2 gold medals at the World Games... and then she broke her leg in warmups at 2022 Worlds. She came back to win bronze in the AA at 2023 Worlds.
😊 Darja Varfolomeev (GER)
Varfolomeev was born in Siberia but left Russia when she was 12 to immigrate to the country of her grandfather. I've heard that Irina Viner thought Varfolomeev's body wasn't right for rhythmic... well she is the 2022 World Silver medalist and swept every gold at 2023 Worlds. One of the things that is really striking about Varfolomeev is that unlike most Germans she enthusiastically sings the German national anthem on the medal stand every. single. time. Which was a lot in Valencia.
😊 Boryana Kaleyn (BUL)
Remember what I said about how European Champions mean a lot in Rhythmic? Well Kaleyn is the 2023 European Champion. But she's been less successful at worlds relative to her continental success. 4 Worlds medals (1 team gold and 3 silvers) to 13 European Championship medals.
If I was a betting woman I'd say the Olympic medals are going to come from that first 5 gymnasts I introduced. There are others of course but these 5 gymnasts own all the World and European AA medals from this quad.
😊 Takhmina Ikromova (UZB)
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chS5Y-8c8do
Ikromova owns the 11th highest All Around score of the year so far... her problem is those 5 big names hold the top 10 between them. Still she's the best rhythmic gymnast in Asia and came in 5th at worlds last year. On a good day she could medal in Paris but she may need help. And the Bulgarians are inclined towards helping others medal way too often for the sanity of their fans.
😑 Elvira Krasnobaeva (BUL)
Clubs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lw7_y3Rh50
Remember how limited the Olympic field is? Well this is the 7th best RGI by AA score this year. She almost certainly wont be in Paris because Kaleyn and Nikolova are just better bets.
😁 Elzhana Taniyeva (KAZ) - Asian Champs Quota
Clubs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb9gZGdUkZY
😊 Ekaterina Vedeneeva (SLO)
Ribbon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NByCW_nEUws
Bronze medalist with ribbon at 2022 and 2023 Worlds is the beloved veteran finally able to shine later in her career. Think about how WAG fans feel about Georgia Godwin or Ellie Black and mix that with the elegance of an Eythora Thorsdottir. She originally competed for Russia but switched to Slovenia in 2018, in contrast to someone I will mention later Irina Viner did not oppose her transfer. A key difference was that Viner never saw Vedeneeva as a threat to take medals from Russian gymnasts.
😑 Eva Brezalieva (BUL)
Hoop - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mTbBZS2TzQ
Remember how I said 4 of the top 12 All Arounders this year were Bulgarian? Meet number 4. Unfortunately for her they only have 2 spots in Paris.
😊 Alba Bautista (ESP)
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyTRgKgyK6c
😊 Viktoriia Onopriienko (UKR)
Clubs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4icRp-FX5Y
Bronze with clubs at 2023 Worlds, this is one of my favorite routines of last year. It also shows what the power of a giant crowd that actually has rhythm clapping unlike some depressing artistic gymnastics crowds. But you may know her from this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOCHFWODAGY
😊 Margarita Kolosov (GER)
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCwB_3ESnPQ
Remember how I said Germany will have a hard choice, after Varfolomeev they have two very talented gymnasts plagued with inconsistency. Kolosov is likely the one who will win out here (which some may feel is right as she earned the second German spot at worlds however the other athlete wasn't permitted to compete at 2023 Worlds....). I think of Kolosov for her incredibly aggressive towel throwing at the start of her walk out. Every time.
😑 Anastasia Simakova (GER)
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OotziO4k34w
Kolosov can't breath easy because running neck and neck with her is her club mate Anastasia Simakova but if inconsistency marks both of them it does Simakova more. She had been a Jr. World Champion for Russia and came to Germany (where her parents had immigrated) in 2022. Simakova's family are from the ethnic German minority in Russia and she told Irina Viner that she was going to Germany to get (a very real) back injury treated. And never came back. The Disney Villain of Gymnastics was displeased and held up her country transfer for a year. A stress point is that she didn't immigrate to a country where it would be easier to make the Olympics. She moved to the one her parents had already immigrated to.
Viner has allowed Russian gymnasts to leave and compete for small unthreatening countries in the past, but generally those have been "B" team gymnasts. Simakova had far too much success and Germany (and her coach Yulia Raskina) were far to outside of Viner's control to allow it.
😊 Fanni Pigniczki (HUN)
Hoop - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsKKiL3kA1Y
The most successful Hungarian rhythmic gymnast ever, she won bronze with the hoop at 2023 Worlds. The Spanish crowd gave her a nickname after the motion one makes while making potato croqueta.

Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVP7dSfv44k
😊 Helene Karbanov (FRA)
Ribbon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwD31PfYp-0
The French were very proud of the fact that they qualified both a group and an individual in their own right and didn't need a host spot. Karbanov doesn't quite have the difficulty to contend for medals but her artistry is lovely and enjoyable.
😊 Bárbara Domingos (BRA)
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UD_oAqQINLQ
Domingos is pretty decisively the best RG in the Americas right now and I expect insanity when Rhythmic Worlds is held in Brazil next year. One of the things I love about this routine is you can clearly see how they can't grip the ball so the handling has to be precise.
😊 Milena Baldassarri (ITA)
Hoop - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6beHGGdPq7M
Baldassarri finished 6th in Tokyo and is probably the second Italian but she has a younger potential rival for that spot that is chasing at her heals.
😑 Tara Dragas (ITA)
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cto6j-UgN6k
I actually think the fight between the Italians for the second spot should be tighter than the German race but I just can't let go of the sense that it will go to Baldassarri. Dragas is young though and surely a name for the LA quad.
😊 Polina Berezina (ESP)
This was my personal favorite ball routine of last year, it was choreographed for the University Games in Chengdu but she didn't end up going. She was very careful to make sure she included a mix of real Chinese martial arts movements. I also really like her 2024 Clubs to the music of Black Panther. Though Berezina was born in Russia and her sister works in film there now, she has lived in Spain since she was 4 and has had all her training in Spain. She is a product of the robust Spanish gymnastics system, not the Russian one.
😊 Annaliese Dragan (ROU)

😁 Wang Zilu (CHN) - Reallocated Host Quota
We all have favorites and Wang Zilu is mine. Full disclosure.
😁 Aliaa Saleh (EGY) - African Championships Quota

😁 Evita Griskenas (USA) - Pan American Games Quota
Ribbon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--ergCL_3Ow
She is the 2019 Pan American Games AA champion and 2023 Pan American Games silver medalist. She will be the only American rhythmic representation in Paris as the US did not qualify a group.
😔 Alina Harnasko (AIN)
Ribbon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YWf8A6Xem0
Harnasko is the Tokyo bronze medalist and without question I think the best non Bulgarian FIG authorized RGI who wont be in Paris. She can not qualify as her only path to the Olympics would have been the European Championships and European Gymnastics has maintained their ban. That said, I don't think even if Harnasko had been in Paris she would have medaled. Having watched her over the course of the season (as well as other Belarussians), it's fairly clear to me that the Belarussians haven't maintained the difficulty curve to stay competitive.
That covers the top individuals, there will be another European (not from a previously qualified country) and an Australian in the field. Group isn't my thing and I'm not keeping a running tally of the leading scores for groups so this will be a bit more vibes
Israel (2023 World Champions)
3 Ribbons/2 Balls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hVWyjhZzzU
I think at the moment Israel is the most likely to medal in group (if not gold). But Group can go south very quickly as seen with the same group doing the same routine at the Palaio Faliro World Cup
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Zl0WAhN3CE
Bulgaria (2022 World Champions)
3 Ribbons/2 Balls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXYwZmzSLZo
But I hear you saying, why do I think Israel has better odds than Bulgaria? They're stunning. And aren't they the Olympic champions? Well yes, A Buglarian group were the Olympic Champions, but this is a different Bulgarian group. They are much younger and the pressure on them is tremendous and cracks show quite frequently. Most tragically at 2023 Worlds. When your 5 Hoops routine is suddenly a 7 Hoops routine as you yeet the apparatus out of bounds.

There will another European country which will either be whoever wins the European quota or if Germany wins it then AZE
I have been salty about the fact that Australia gets a free pass to the Olympics despite finishing 23 of 24 Groups at 2023 Worlds but apparently they have a new group this year who I'm assured is not that bad.
Anyway so that's the Olympic field, for the most part, because I'm a structural nerd I'm going to hit on a few other points.
Corruption
The sport has a terrible and long history of corruption, including judges cheating on FIG exams (you can thank rhythmic for why FIG doesn't like holding online exams), bribery, favoritism, and straight up writing the code of points to favor a particular athlete. I will be honest and tell you that the corruption kept me from giving the sport a chance for a long time and I don't blame you if you find it a non starter as well. It's still a problem but I have hope.
There is no getting around that Rhythmic is essentially an Eastern European sport and Russia has dominated for many years in part because of the immense amount of money they spend not just at home but in other federations. One might say that Irina Viner bought herself a sport. Not that it wasn't for sale before Viner.
To give a sense of the amount of money involved let's talk about palaces to Rhythmic Gymnastics. Literal Palaces.
This is the Irina Viner-Usmanova Gymnastics Palace in Moscow.
This is the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku, Azerbaijan, built in large part for the first lady/vice president of the country whose favorite sport is... you guest it.
National Gymnastics Arena in Baku, Azerbaijan
Just the mention of Baku is enough to send some rhythmic fans into PTSD flashbacks for completely unjustifiable scoring (and terrible camera work and and and ...) . The fact that the arena was built for Rhythmic though, will explain to Artistic fans why the arena can't put both a beam and a set of parallel bars on it's floor space at the same time at the Baku World Cup.
The sport also has a vicious history of coaching abuse and eating disorders that I wont defend and I don't think has really been addressed. But the elephant in the room of all of this corruption and abuse is Irina Viner, the president of the Russian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation. Irina Viner was married to Oligarch Alisher Usmanov, at one point Russia's richest man. He's currently the president of the European Fencing Federation which explains how they've massively botched handling Russian athletes.
Her Wikipedia Article.
They divorced for financial reasons after Usmanov was subject to many many many sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine. His mega yacht is stranded in Germany.
Anyway, Irina Viner dresses like a Disney Villain and acts like one too. After she viciously attacked the judges at the Tokyo Olympics she was banned for 2 years starting from the day after Russia's international ban ends.
https://preview.redd.it/0l3weeymcwzc1.jpg?width=866&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=960f12a402c0975dba57b994c64a50c826f91fe4
She has at different points told gymnasts that she'll kill them if they try to retire, and pulled Russian support from her own hand picked president of the Rhythmic Technical Committee because she didn't fall in line in Tokyo. The carrot to performing for Viner though is a promise of a marriage to an obscenely wealthy Russian man at the end of your career. Or you know... becoming the mother of Putin's children. Khorkina's face in this picture...
https://preview.redd.it/2vv649gscwzc1.jpg?width=2200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5514a3ffe55d47e28834bb3156ed49941b56f7d1
So they're banned and they've dominated the sport for so long surely they're doing amazing things at their domestic competitions now. Well... for values of amazing. Viner has decided to create her own personal code of points which the Russians are now competing to. It emphasizes elements that in previous FIG CoPs caused massive numbers of injuries. Massive scores despite obvious errors and their gymnasts are breaking down physically. They've also brought up a non-apparatus routine setting called Free Hands which is normally competed by juniors... but hey if Irina likes it she's playing in her own sandbox now.
Would the Russians be competitive if they were in Paris? Sure. Probably. But maybe not? It's hard to tell when they're playing in lala land and have routines composed for an entirely different code of points. No Russians have applied for FIG AIN status.
But here is the best part.... Rhythmic Gymnastics is taking the time they have without the Russians and without Viner and they're fixing as much as they can as fast as they can. The age for juniors was raised last year (something Irina very much did not want) and the 2025-28 Code of Points takes a hatchet to a lot of the difficulty stacking (very broad over simplification) that has been written into previous codes to favor particular Russian gymnasts. They're basically unwinding what she did to the CoP either directly or through her influence.
And right now Rhythmic is more competitive than it's ever been. A wide variety of countries are winning medals, and the RGI All Around in Paris looks to be the most unpredictable that it has ever been and much more unpredictable than the artistic all arounds.
The biggest looming issue for Rhythmic though is the IOC's clear dislike of single gendered sports. With the introduction of men to artistic swimming it's hard to think that Rhythmic will stay in the Olympics for very long if they don't find some way to include men.
There are two competing styles of men's rhythmic but neither has a mass of athletes. The first is Japanese Men's Rhythmic which includes things you normally would see in Artistic. Some argue that it's basically a different sport.
Japanese Men's Rhythmic Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D48ZPoY2e2Y
The second style is Spanish Men's Rhythmic which more closely echoes the women's discipline.
Spanish Men's Rhythmic Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BckY1Glglrg
Men's rhythmic faces a lot of resistance rooted in homophobia and I don't know how it's going to resolve. But the IOC is pretty much an unmovable object and they have been systematically forcing gendered integration on single gender sports.
If you want to learn more here is a great video from a few years ago about the state of Men's Rhythmic and showing a lot of examples:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNhLauzoYOk
I'll leave you off with one last routine.
😑 Taisiia Onofriichuk (UKR)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndz58tmfBVQ
Onofriichuk will almost certainly not be in Paris but I feel like her exhausting ribbon is a good way to end this marathon of a thread.

2024.05.11 13:56 DukenottheDuke (AU) It's finally here - AW3225QF

(AU) It's finally here - AW3225QF
So, I finanlly received the unit yesterday, after a 20-day delay of shippment. Thought to share some experience if anyone's on the same boat. For context, I living in Sydney, Australia.
Order placement: tl;dr delivery delayed right after placing the order, though arrived early after contacting Dell.
Placed the order throught official website when there was a surprising sale coming up on April 20th, 20% off. When placing order, I saw it would be shipping in 2 days. But later that night, an email popped up notifying there was a delay, and the expected delivery would be on May 20th. Very frustrated. On May 6th I by accident noticed on Alienware website displayed the expected delivery would be May 10th. So I contacted Dell support and they agreed to give me an 'expedited delivery', and someone would get in touch with specifics. Then the contact never came, but delivery came on May10th (10 days earlier than the delayed date).
Packaging: tl;dr perfect delivery (see pic). No packaging issue to worry about.
Package arrived perfectly. Lighter than expected. Be sure to be at home when it arrives though because I heard that the size of this package is too big and it doen't fit every Australia Post's storage, so may end up being somewhere farther than the closest depot. There's two layers of protection - foam as the out layer, sticky protection as the inner layer. You remove the out layer first, then unstick all taps from the back of the screen to remove the inner layer. Anyway, perfectly protected.
Setup: tl;dr stand is too big, need bigger table. Curvature is unsensable.
My table is 110cm wide and 70cm deep. Way too small for the screen. You either get a bigger table (150cm*80cm at least), or get a monitor arm. Speaking of which, Dell gave around $48 AUD via their reward system. Might consider getting an official Dell arm using this voucher. The big thing is, on a 70cm deep table, the monitor is too close to the eye and I kind of feel 'overwhelmed'. My previous monitor is ASUS PG348 ultrawide. With the ultra wide, even thought the screen size is 2 inches bigger, it didn't make me feel overwhelmed because it's not very tall compared to AW3225QF, and the height of the monitor is exactly what made me feel overwhelmed. However it does make me feel immersive though.
One of the biggest controversies of this screen is its curvature. I honestly don't feel it mainly because of its subtleness and the monitor's size. As mentioned later, the screen is way taller than ultrawide monitors, and this height exagerates the immersion and even the sense of overwhelm, but it greatly eliminates your sense of curvature. When playing games, I cannot feel the curve anyways when concentrate on the game. But when I'm not playing games, I use black themes everywhere, and this may prevent me from feeling curvature. So curvature is really the last thing you worry about, if you worry at all. If you're hesitatent about the curvature, just buy a unit and try it out and you should feel ok. The worst is just return it.
Performance: tl;dr works perfectly with M3 Max Mac, but RTX 3070ti is struggling
Tons of previous posts have touched on this and they helped me a lot before purchasing. But I'm under the impression that many posted have RTX4090, which I don't have. So I tried myself with the RTX 3070ti. Not surprisingly, you want to get better graphic cards. I'm certain I'll build a new desktop when the 50 series graphic card comes out to unlock this monitor's potential.
With Mac however, it performs surprisingly well. My Mac is MacBook Pro M3 Max. Before I bought, many Mac users reported their Mac worked at 4k@120 hz and they needed to buy an extra cable. I thought I would be the same. But when I tested with my own Mac, I realised my newer unit actally works better. For one, I don't need an extra cable - both my Mac and Alienware x17 can use the same HDMI cable because the M3 Max chip supports HDMI 2.1, and previous gens don't, which is why many M1 and M2 users couldn't use HDMI to unlock 4k@240 hz. For two, I can unlock 4k@240 with HDMI instead of others reported 4k@120 with DP. I don't personally need 4k@240 on Mac since I do PhD and only read papers and code on it, but I appreciate I'm able to have this performance. There's tons of different resolution ratios one can choose from on the Mac after connecting the monitor, and I tried a few and they all worked perfectly.
Overall the build quality of the monitor is solid, no wobble and scractes or anything. I'm glad at this stage AW3225QF is up to my standard. Since I live in Sydney, electronic products are priced really rediculously. Even though I know there are many outstanding competitors out there in the market, the price and availability of AW3225QF help make it an easier decision. I'm glad AW3225QF lives up my expectation.
Feel free to drop any comments and questions.

2024.05.10 00:59 Zaki_1052_ My Senior AP Week Reflection - Extremely Long (5 exams, 9 total)

My Senior AP Week Reflection - Extremely Long (5 exams, 9 total)
Context:
I took AP Gov, Chem, Lit, and CSA. I have Calc AB on Monday still (I’m a Senior). I got 5s on APUSH, Lang, HuG, and a three in Bio.
Predicting: Gov-5, Chem-3, Lit-5, CSA-4, Calc-3/2 (hopefully the former). This is going to be an extremely long post of a lot of thoughts, so if you want the tldr, paste it into an LLM.
  1. AP Chem:
The MCQ could really have been a LOT better, I don’t think I did well on that at all, but I think I did alright on the FRQ; I only skipped one part on the second to last question because I was running out of time. But yeah, everyone says the MCQ was just...not it.
Predicting a 3 for this one. Regrets: I wish I had gone over a bit more calorimetry; I thought I knew it but I was a bit rusty on thermo and also equilibrium. This was probably my worst of the four I took so far. I need a 3 for any course credit but a 4 will mean I place into OChem.
I’m used to answering a lot of MCQs like they’re math questions, so some of those definitely threw me off. But just generally, most people seem to have found the MCQ difficult so I think the curve will be decent this year.
Oh! Also, I should mention that this is my teacher's first year teaching - I think at all - as she mentioned having to shadow others at my school. She wasn't particularly good or bad, just kind of there. Kind of like AP Bio. This is the shortest one; there isn’t much to say except that it was difficult, but I passed.
I just regret not taking it last year because it was apparently super easy (and had an amazing teacher at my school). This was probably equivalent to my AP Bio Sophmore year (3), accounting for how much I studied of course (maybe not as much as I should have). Overall: decent, could've been better.
  1. AP Gov:
This was probably my best one, the MCQ was, like, insultingly easy. I took AP Human Geography a few years ago and thought that was the easiest possible exam, but this definitely takes the cake (same teacher btw). I’m probably just used to my teacher’s really bad wording and slightly opinionated multiple choice tests, but this was extremely clear and intuitive in comparison.
Can’t think of any I got wrong, but for the practice I got a few points off the final, this seemed slightly easier. I finished in just under half the time (40 minutes or so). Napped.
For the FRQ, I was pretty much relying on my experience from APUSH last year because we didn't do any in class (weird last minute schedule changes at my school and my teacher ran out of time to practice or really talk about it at all). Even so, I found these a lot easier than APUSH.
A lot of it was either common sense or something I just felt confident in. Humanities have always been my strongest (5 on HuG and APUSH), which is ironic because I'm a STEM major, but these FRQs were just easy.
Had a little under half time left when I finished and spent another 20 minutes looking over it, but I filled out a (kinda cramped) page per question for 1-3 and then an extra 2 pages on that last essay. Looks like I got Question Set 2 (they just released).
I used all the documents (apparently you don't need to, and there's not even a sophistication point??), and argued for social moments, using pluralism and factions from Fed 10 as my counterargument, and talking a LOT about the example of the CRM and MLK with the right to assemble and such.
Protests were already on my mind because I'm going to a UC and I just happened to argue with my parents about this for hours over the weekend, so I got lucky that was my Prompt. Overall definitely predicting a 5, would not be surprised if either I or my friend who I usually compete with got a perfect score (they're going to an Ivy).
  1. AP Lit:
I took this one online, and I already got a 5 on Lang so I apparently didn't even need to take it (found out after I submitted college apps and was looking at credit charts lol). Oh, taking it digital, we started about an hour late due to tech problems, which was annoying. But

I thought it was pretty decent! I really loved my teacher this year (hopefully my friends don't know my reddit account, but if so, yes I'm sorry he's very terrible). Overall just an amazing class experience.
Seriously though, the guy literally has a PhD in British Literature, he's amazingly insightful and I felt like I learned a lot this year; I definitely would not have gained as many skills as I did analyzing poetry without such a good teacher, and even my big prose essay happened to benefit, so it all worked out!
It just so happens that his two favorite pieces of literature are Hamlet and Madame Bovary. I used the latter for the prompt about missing something (specifically love), but Hamlet would have been great for indecision as well. I reused a lot of my points from our final about how when we think we achieve our desires we're never really satisfied, and how Emma was living in a fantasy world of fairy tale romance.
I also went over the blind beggar and how he saw the missing void in her heart, and how discomfited she was that he recognized that which she refused to — all her relationships were never true love — they were always purely sexual and all her spending and debt that she used to fill that piece of her spirit that was missing in marriage and religion would eventually drive her to suicide.
My teacher's honestly a bit Freudian (sorry, it's true!), but Hamlet obviously is probably even easier to talk about though I don't have the energy to plan another essay rn. Anyways, I'm fairly confident in a 5 for this one as well, even if a couple of the poems from the MCQ (dreams?) kinda threw me off.
Luckily, my teacher gave us a decent framework for setting up complex theses, and forewarned us that they'd ask us to connect the literary technique with the theme (literally our final), so I felt pretty prepared for the other FRQ. He suggested that we say something like:
"While on the surface, the poem appears to be about
, it is actually a vehicle for the author to
", or: "While most readers might conclude that
, on further inspection, the author actually...", which I thought was really smart for forcing yourself to think in complexity rather than giving an easy answer. I know it's a tad bit pretentious though!
My best friend is in the other AP Lit class with a different teacher, and his experience was vastly disparate to mine. Sounds like she tried -futiley- to teach to the exam, while mine went the approach of enhancing our overall Literature and analysis skills. I think you can infer which one I prefer.
Anyways, that one really all came down to the teacher, and I can definitely see how this one (especially the MCQ) could've been harder than last year, especially because while Lang was more SAT-like (790/800), this was decidedly not.
It's like, not even the questions that were bad, the answer choices were just such that you had to choose the least bad answer. Oh, and the nature/summertime thing was weird in that it was way too simple to talk about, but I managed like everyone else did.
  1. AP CSA:
This one was probably the one I'm most disappointed in myself for. I kind of expected a 3 on Chem (even if I was previously gunning for a 4), but I need a 4 for college credit in CompSci. Over the past year, I had gotten really into ML/AI, the former for my final Bioinformatics project on DNA Methylation, and the latter of which I actually learned JavaScript for. I already knew Python from my own curiosity, though I'm rusty and never took the class or exam.
That being said, I was pretty turned off by the teaching of CSE in general, though I'm not sure if that's the CSA class/exam or a more broad failing of just not knowing how to impart programming and make students want to do it (10 people took the exam at my school; there's a problem.).
Just the methodology of testing for it kinda made me hate it, even though I have a lot of fun coding on my own. The fact that MCQ is all about tracing code and is essentially math, where you're the computer and you're calculating what would be put into the compiler just seems stupid to me.
Regardless, from a student perspective, the MCQ was fine, as in I did well enough on it, not that I think it's a valid way to test, though I have no idea how else it would be. I was running slightly low on time, but I knew I would be, mainly because I hate how tedious it is even if the MCQ is technically easy (which it was).
Anyways, enough complaining. Onto the FRQ! It was...OK? Usually I'm pretty decent at writing code, classes and the like, but I wasn't quite expecting the specifications to be so weirdly worded. I guess it parallels the unclear expectations you receive doing CS jobs irl though, so that's fine. Also, last year was apparently harder?
Oh, I should mention that my teacher is retiring next year, so she was extremely checked out and the whole class was basically self-study on Runestone. I'll admit that as a Senior taking CSA as a 7th period, I found more important things to do than to practice writing code I thought I was pretty decent at, so that's definitely on me.
With that said, I didn't fully finish the last question of the FRQ, and while they weren't overly difficult generally, as in I could figure out the concepts they wanted (like math.random) and I managed to remember most of the syntax I had neglected, I definitely should have reviewed Arrays a bit more, as time was a big issue on this one.
Overall, I'm still predicting a 4 for CSA, but if I get unlucky with the curve I could get a 3, which would suck but still give me some course credit for college, just no exemption. My general review would be that it wasn't bad, it was even decent; the test on average was kinda like the Chem FRQ. That's all.
  1. Calc AB:
Obviously, this one is on Monday, so I haven't taken it yet, but I'd like to offer my predictions and thoughts. Math has always been my worst subject by far, but I'm trying for a 3 for college credit, as my Uni is offering a full ride for a month of summer where I can take the rest of Calc 101.
After that, I plan to just take a Semester's worth more of Math (up to Linear Algebra), and then be done. But to do that, I need to place and get a 3. When I took the final practice, I was exactly a point and a half below, so I have some more studying to do.
I should mention that my teacher this year for Calc AB is widely regarded as one of, if not the most, worst/hardest teacher at my school. It's definitely a weed out class, and most of my friends took it over the summer to place into BC with a good teacher rather than suffer my current one.
While I would usually differentiate between a bad teacher and a hard one (my Lit is the perfect example of the latter but not the former), Calc AB is both. I've never felt comfortable asking questions to her, she frequently blows off students, and her attitude just generally makes me hate math even more than I already did.
This year has been a lot of self-study and torture, so I'm really gunning for that 3 to prove her (and myself) wrong. I'm actually taking the class P/F because it does horrible things to my GPA (4.3 instead of 4.66). Anyways, wish me luck on this one!
  1. APUSH:
I took APUSH and Lang last year, and while I didn't really feel the need to study for my 5 in Lang, APUSH was my most difficult class that I probably studied for the most, but my teacher Junior year was probably the best I've ever had, or at least my favorite of all time (my current AP Lit might be technically better).
Yeah, my APUSH teacher really encouraged me to push through on that class and sincerely made me interested in US History. He's also probably why I did so well in AP Gov, so I owe him a “Thank You” when I get back. I ended up applying UCs, which doesn't take rec letters obviously, but if I had requested one, he would definitely be it!
Anyways, I know an amazing teacher isn't possible for most people, but I wish everyone luck on their APUSH Exam on Friday; you can do it!! I got a 5 when I worked for it, and you can too!
7-9. Other APs: Bio, etc,
There isn't much to say about Lang or AP Human Geography. I found them both pretty easy, intuitive, and common sense. Prepare, of course (specifically for the course content of the latter), but they're both guarenteed 5s if you put the work in.
For AP Bio, that was the biggest regret of my high school career. It's actually my major (Biology: Bioinformatics), and I got a 3. I just know I was close to a 4, but also that it was partly my fault for letting bad study habits from COVID bleed into the beginning of my Sophmore year, and I never really caught up.
AP Bio is one of those courses where you need to be prepared from the get-go, especially if your teacher has a somewhat lax but competent teaching style. Not to make excuses for myself or anything, but I actually got COVID the week before, missed my AP HuG Exam (had to do the retake), and recovered the day before the AP Bio.
My brain and studying were just not up to par at all, and I'm confident that if I had worked as hard as I did for APUSH the year after, I definitely would've gotten a 4 or even a 5. So, I wish everyone luck as well on Bio next Thursday, and hope you're prepared!
Conclusion:
For everyone else, I'll be lurking next week around this sub after I take Calc, and I'm confident in everyone to do their best! I'll probably turn off my notifs tomorrow afternoon, so if anyone has questions before then feel free to ask and I'll attempt to respond! Congrats if you got this far in the post, lol, and I hope it was helpful!

Faction re-focus: Alpha Legion
https://preview.redd.it/dasqsz8fx3zc1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e699026669d3b6f2af7c8614e4123e02f8555c58

"We are Legion. I am everywhere."

~Alpharius(?)
The Alpha Legion have a wide array of tools available to them meant to disrupt and put pressure on their opponents, with their enemies often finding their own momentum used against them.
Generally, the faction's strengths, weaknesses, and playstyle can be summed up like this:
  • An odd mixture of aggressive playstyle and focus on playing the long-game.
  • Warlords begin the game disguised as a regular Alpha Legionary; each Alpha Legion warlord starts with a 0-cost purple card, their "secret identity" - when played, the Alpha Legionary turns into the warlord proper alongside an additional effect.
  • Best access to stun, can't attack, and jam of any faction, enabling them to lock down opponents who are overly-reliant on their warlord or individual troops.
  • Trap cards, which when drawn by the opponent, have potentially devastating effects; they are a large part of what makes the Alpha Legion so good at playing the long game, as with the right set-up, the opponent's deck may end up being composed almost entirely of trap cards.
  • Secret Orders - tactics which are applied to enemy troops, which are then activated when the opponent does what is specified on the order; their legendary tactic may just find itself nullified by a Mu Order, or the all-important flank troop they deploy next turn may find itself with only 1 attack because of their comrades' betrayal!
  • Good access to stealth; while they're no Raven Guard or Night Lords, the Alpha Legion have plenty of troops that begin with stealth, and one of their warlords gains stealth when they reveal.
  • Able to force their opponents to draw cards, including forcing them to draw trap cards specifically; some of their cards are dependent on the number of cards in either their hand, or the opponents'.
  • Operatives, which are special troops that are given to the opponent and have negative passive effects for them.
  • Poor survivability and somewhat mediocre stats for their cost, made up for by strong rally or passive effects.
That may seem like a lot (and it is), but in large part these mechanics will be working in concert to bring the Alpha Legion to one of their (potentially many) win conditions.
Let's take a look at their warlords now.

Alpha Legionary

\"I am Alpharius.\"
All Alpha Legion warlords begin the game in this "disguised" form. The Alpha Legionary's ability is situationally useful, as forcing the opponent to draw while also drawing yourself can be quite helpful, but for the most part, this guy's only here for two purposes: mindgaming your opponent into thinking your warlord is someone they aren't (e.g. Exodus when they're really Alpharius), or keeping their secret identity's other effect available until you really need it.

Armillus Dynat

\"A harrowing is coming..\"
\"I am but one head of the Hydra.\"
Dynat is, unfortunately, quite weak - if he could choose who to jam, or his ability was to jam without instead drawing every other use, he would be much stronger - but his secret identity's effect can be quite useful in a pinch, especially if you get a couple of them from False Colours (more on that card later).

Exodus

\"You're in my sights..\"
\"Stay put, and accept your end.\"
A meta favourite, almost nothing is truly safe from Exodus. For the most part, you're going to want to keep your hand close to full as long as possible, but be careful not to end up overdrawing and needing to discard.
His secret identity is probably the strongest - a turn of stealth may be just what you need to survive in a difficult situation, and buys you time to set up his siege ability without much risk.

Sheed Ranko

\"One never expects what's hidden in plain sight!\"
\"Should you really trust those besides you?\"
Sheed isn't particularly strong, but he's incredibly frustrating to fight. He can generally deal with aggressive face-basher opponents quite easily by playing Myzmadra, counteract opponents who rely on weak spam units (such as Caliban Jaegers) with Doromek, or just generally be annoying with Haln.
Better than Dynat, but the other two Alpha Legion warlords are far better.

Alpharius/Omegon

\"This is about victory - true victory!\"
\"Your reality is just a forgery of my own design.\"
\"Your eyes deceive you..\"
\"The more you try, the more you seal your fate.\"
The Alpha Legion warlord. He is able to add any Alpha Legion tactic (except the mission card) to his hand from a random pool of 3, including legendaries. This is exactly as planned overpowered as it sounds. You could keep creating Hydran Exemplar and turning your opponent's deck into a waterfall of trap cards, or False Colours in order to spam warlord heals by revealing Alpharius again (possibly even twice if you get lucky), get more attack power with Dynat, stealth from Exodus, or some combination of these things.
Final Configuration is Alpharius' equivalent to other traitor legion primarchs' Whispers of Chaos cards, and is put into your hand when you reveal Alpharius, which transforms you into Lord of Serpents when used. Lord of Serpents' ability even works when the enemy troop it's used on is stunned or has can't attack, and it is also capable of triggering Lambda Orders, Myzmadra's passive, and Infiltrator Sylas' passive.

Card tier-list

I am not confident in my ability to make a good tier-list, but here's one anyway.

S-tier

False Colours - Reverts your warlord into Alpha Legionary and generates 2 random secret identities. You can reveal one of these and save the other for later if you want, since you can reveal another warlord even while revealed as a different one (or even the same one!). Best if you can get Alpharius and/or Exodus from this.
Headhunter Eskyrx - While the secret order given is random, you could potentially see your opponent drop a chonky troop only to find it die at the end of their turn without doing anything, or nullify the next tactic they use, or reduce the attack of the next one to 1, and Eskyrx is quite durable for a stealth troop at 5 health.
Azure Serpent - Extremely effective as a finisher, or to help clean up the opponent's board. If they have a full hand, this thing will do 20 damage randomly-distributed in groups of 2 as a rally effect.
Kappa Stormbird - Board-wide jam, plus a draw for yourself at 4 energy. This will absolutely throw a wrench in the opponent's gameplan if they are relying on lots of frontlines or board-wide buffs.
Sigma Order - Tell a troop that their life is nothing, they serve zero purpose, and they should kill themself.. NOW! At the end of the opponent's next turn, the unit will destroy itself. Good on its own, but in combination with stun or can't attack, you can disable and hard-remove an opponent for extremely cheap - and you can get a lot of these things from Aleph Null Sergeants, Tenebrae Installations, or good luck with Headhunter Eskyrx.

A-tier

Skalas Squad - It's a 5-attack flanker for 4 energy. Low durability, but that's not what you get flankers for.
Sergeant Jarus - Incredibly chonky flanker with unstoppable. While his flank is technically conditional, it's not exactly rare to have 5 or more cards in your hand as the Alpha Legion.
Nul Terminators - Stun a unit and its neighbors while putting something decent on the board. Not exactly overwhelming, but AoE stun is always nice to have.
Askelitar Squad - Stun an enemy and put a 4/3 astartes on the board. The best 4-energy drop in terms of establishing board presence.
Hydran Exemplar - Put one of each kind of trap card (currently 4) in the enemy deck, then force them to draw a card (not necessarily a trap card) for 3 energy. Best if you're getting these by generating them as Alpharius, but alright to throw into a deck using a different warlord.
Saboteur Consul - Very irritating for your opponent if it gets its ambush effect; good for killing your opponent's momentum if they're playing the curve and don't have an answer to stealth.
Praetor Jaekon - Best on Exodus so that he can keep his hand full. Works well with Alpharius if you're trying to get final configuration.
Vigilator Xerophos - Very strong rally effect (reduce an enemy's current and max health to 1) and is stealthed, but extremely vulnerable to cards such as Cull of Cowardice.
Legionary Alpharius - Forces the opponent to draw a trap card with his ability and has vantage. Stats are decent, but not especially great. Fittingly, he works best with Primarch Alpharius.
Harrower Jaego - Tough troop that can serve as a semi board-clearer. Main problem is his cost; it's unlikely you'll be able to use something to force the opponent to draw on the same turn you deploy him, and thus he's liable to getting removed before he can do his board-wide ping of damage more than once.
Mu Order - Can be extremely frustrating for your opponent when they play a powerful tactic expecting that you used a different order, only to have their tactic nullified.
Unity and Lies - 2 damage to all enemies when drawn. Not bad for only 1 energy and a bit of luck with the enemy's draw, and with how many ways you have to force the enemy to draw, it's inevitable that it will hit at some point. The fact it could be drawn on the opponent's turn also means it can throw a wrench in their plans if they do something that makes them draw and suddenly find themselves down a troop or two they needed.
The Hydra - While the card affected is random, you effectively turn it into a brick in the opponent's hand. Can be quite disruptive, especially if the card in question was going to be used in a combo.
Sons of the Hydra - The Alpha Legion's mission card. Its true reward is not what you get for its completion, but rather that it will make your opponent aggressively facebash you to prevent you from completing it, often instead of using their warlord ability. Reward is good, but the Alpha Legion already has plenty of ways to get traps, including as a resolution effect. Still nice to have it on your warlord, though.
Brand of the Hydra - I'm beginning to see a theme with these names. Stop those pesky facebasher units and put the enemy down 1 energy for a turn; synergizes well with sigma order.
Praetor Thkeln - Potential to steal something great from your opponent, and a good statline.
Shyrax Squad - Cheap way to make the enemy draw a trap card and can do a bit of damage, but quite vulnerable to AoE.

B-tier

Paramar Invasion - Potentially a very cheap board-wipe, but doesn't do all that much damage and has a bit of RNG. Unity and Lies usually does the same thing for even cheaper, despite the RNG element of drawing it.
Psi Order - When the opponent puts a troop in play while one they already have on the board has this order, the newly-deployed troop has its base attack set to 1. If a passive effect is boosting its attack, however, they still receive that bonus - it does, however, remove any attack buffs they have.
Infiltrator Sylas - Discourage your opponent from facebashing lest their warlord gets slapped for 2 damage each time they do. Has stealth, so it's likely that this deterrent will last at least for its first turn. I generally prefer to get him from the opponent drawing the trap card that puts one in play, though.
Ghost Legion - The aforementioned trap card that puts in play Infiltrator Sylas.
Omega Storm Eagle - Not terribly much damage, but you're mostly getting this for a combination of the damage and the trap cards it puts in the opponents' deck when it kills something.
Myzmadra - Operative that's basically Sylas, except that Myzmadra slaps the attacker instead of the warlord specifically.
Operative Haln - Frustrating for your opponent, but more expensive than the other operatives and easier for your opponent to get rid of.
Phorosius Support - Good 3/3 drop that helps Alpharius get closer to final configuration or potentially make the enemy draw a trap card if you get lucky.
25-2 Rhino - Quite durable and guarantees at least one trap card in the opponents' deck, with potential for many more if you can keep it alive. One of those units that forces a response, since if left unattended, it will cause lots of problems for the opponent.
Moritat Vortronar - Not bad, but not especially good unless you're making the enemy draw a lot.
Unidentified Legionary - Best with Exodus to help keep his hand full, with decent stats. Solid card, but not especially great.
Kyphax Veterans - Helps swing the game's momentum back in your favour.
Ancient Inigo - Nice if you can get a lot of draws, but somewhat slow.
Hertzor Seekers - 2 damage on rally and forces the opponent to draw a trap card if the target dies. It's always good to have a way to force the enemy to draw a trap card, but this guy's a bit pricey for the statline despite the good rally.
Varix Squad - Helps to reduce the cost of Alpharius' final configuration and may make the enemy draw traps sometimes. Also helps to fill out your hand. Stats are kinda meh, but that's not why you get these guys.
Phors Seekers - Is the enemy relying on a single chonky troop? Prevent them from facebashing for as long as this guy's alive and not stunned/jammed. Works exceptionally well with sigma order, as his ability only costs 1 energy, but is slow. Good statline and stealth, though.
Echion Sky-hunters - 2 damage and a jam for 2 energy. Nice to have in a pinch.
Undercover Action - While you only get to pick from 3 troops in your opponent's hand, if you can put this on a flank, fast, or vantage troop you've effectively taken away its value for only 1 energy.

C-tier

Tenebrae Installation - Best on Exodus and Alpharius' final configuration, with the former using it to beef up his hand and the latter as a semi-replacement for Alpharius' pre-configuration ability. The secret orders do not get a cost reduction however, and can often cause you to overdraw by getting lots of secret orders you can't really benefit from.
Lambda Order - Really funny when you steal a troop the opponent has been buffing a lot, but you still take the hit first. Works exceptionally well in combination with final configuration Alpharius.
Aleph Null Sergeant - While it's nice that you can pick the secret order, it's still full-cost and his stats are kinda meh.
Arkturus Squad - Can be useful, especially against Jaeger spam, but slow.
Assault Harrow - Either your opponent has too little on the board for it to be worth its cost, or they have too many and you end up losing some of them due to your hand being full. At least the secret orders are free.
Ithron Terminators - You're mostly bringing these guys for the durable frontline.
Effrit Disruptor - Expensive, durable version of 25-2 Rhino that has stealth. Can be nice, but the aforementioned rhino does basically the same thing for cheaper.
Mirage - Good if you're fighting an opponent who is using a lot of vehicles, but expensive.
Strife Wrought - Can be nice, but probably the weakest trap card as its effect doesn't immediately hinder the opponent.
Operative Doromek - Situationally good, but due to how operatives are placed it's unlikely to be positioned well to do much damage.

D-tier

X632 Vindicator - Too slow to be viable.
Hydra's Gaze - While its passive is nice, it's still one of those 10-energy tank troop that every legion seems to have as filler. It doesn't even have frontline!
Legionary Fortrax - Just play as Sheed or bring the operatives in your deck, it's cheaper and this guy's stats aren't great for his cost. At least he has vantage.

I would like to thank the creator of the original Faction Focus for creating the guides that helped me go from a terrible new player to a slightly-less-terrible player of 2 years' experience. I still check those guides for the factions which haven't been reworked, not only because they're still handy (if a bit outdated by now), but because I really enjoy reading through them.
I'm not sure that I did a terribly good job, but I figure I may as well try to create overviews for the reworked factions since there are none yet as far as I'm aware. I don't have any decks listed here as I don't have all the cards and because I'm not particularly good at deckbuilding anyway, but if you have any decks, feel free to share them in the comments.
Let me know if I got anything wrong or forgot anything, I'd be happy to update this overview if I did.

2024.05.07 22:16 neotic_reaper Newbie looking for advice on he first decks I’ve ever built

I’ve been playing for about 2 months now and the last couple weeks I’ve been into making decks. I play mostly online with my buddies so budget doesn’t mean anything.
My process is finding a commander I like and then looking up best cards that do what I want to. Like if the theme is 1/1 counters I’ll just look up best cards for 1/1 counters and add them.
In honestly just looking for any feedback, any critiques, potential pOwEr LeVeLs and whatnot. Mama curve might be lacking because that’s not a concept I was too familiar with when building (and still amn’t). Im busy in general so I haven’t time to truly play each deck a lot which is part of why I’m looking here for advice
First deck I made was Raphael. I liked demons and devils conceptually but his second ability is what stood out to me. Free prickle damage with life link. So my strategy is to make that needle a knife with damage doublers to start hitting people for 4, 8, 16 damage per imp. Along with some generally good and strong D/D/I’s for synergy.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/m4Lqc63bq0Wc9rYSqiLp0g
Next was Animar. I liked the idea of cheating big guys out. I DID RULE 0 THE ILLEGAL ELDRAZI. Just to get that out, my pod is fine with it. But it’s all about getting a bunch of counters on animar and getting free eldrazis and big monsters out and protecting him while I’m building him up.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/JSWmx5FX1UqtEaIIkSlLhw
Blim. My buddy really likes this card so I thought it’d be interesting to mess around with. It’s just full of terrible terrible things and ways to buff blim. I am a degenerate enemy of a board with this one and it doesn’t even matter if I win as long as chaos is happening.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/aFSmizbR2EqjQm3Y9Bn_zw
Next is one that isn’t even out yet, Kudo Bear. Make everything bears and put counters on my bears to make them way better than the dumb enemy bears. I am the alpha Bear man. There is some protection for Kudo but with green and a base 2 mana cost, I’m not too worried about a little commander tax.
https://www.moxfield.com/decks/TTMdWHJE7Em8luew3E9xFw
Finally, I made this one for my friend who liked the concept of Grismold. It’s about getting a bunch of tokens out and making sure the ones we give our enemies die off before they can even make use of them. 1/1 counters and sac outlets make for one big boy.

2024.05.07 07:54 grasteleu Custom Character sheet for a Homebrew Mini-Campaign

Custom Character sheet for a Homebrew Mini-Campaign
I've been the dungeon master for an online DND5e campaign featuring a group of 7 players, including myself. It's become a tradition for us to gather at my house for what we call a "DND Weekend Extravaganza!" Each year, I concoct a special homebrew mini-campaign just for the occasion.
This year, luck would have it that our DND weekend coincided with May the 4th, also known as Star Wars day. Inspired by the timing, I decided to blend the worlds of Dungeons and Dragons with Star Wars, much to the excitement of my players.
For this special session, I set the stage by asking players to imagine themselves as children aged 5-9, invited to a prestigious school for talented youths. But there was a catch—I instructed them not to select a class for their characters. The first session would be a mix of storytelling and character creation, with the world reminiscent of a Studio Ghibli movie: a blend of technology and magic, yet untamed and mysterious.
As the weekend commenced and our adventure began, the players found themselves in the shoes of eager students, ushered from their homes to the school. Upon arrival, they were placed in their classroom, eagerly awaiting the arrival of their teacher. But before the teacher's arrival, chaos ensued—the power was cut, and the sound of battle filled the air, leaving the children in suspense.
Then, in a dramatic entrance, a cloaked figure appeared in the doorway. One of the NPC students whispered to the group that this was their teacher and they should be safe now. The Student proceede to stand up, walk forward, and exclaim “Master Anakin, there’s too many of them. What’re we going to do?” The players' reactions were priceless, as they realized the unexpected twist I had woven into the story, they are playing as Jedi younglings during the execution of Order 66.
I paused the story at that climactic moment, transitioning into character creation where I provided them with options for species to play as, introduced a homebrewed class called "Jedi Youngling," and handed out custom character sheets tailored to our Star Wars-themed adventure.
Throughout the weekend, the players fully immersed themselves in their roles, with one player going so far as to exclusively role-play using Ewok noises from the movies—an amusing and creative touch that added to the fun.
The story reached its climax as the players faced the ultimate decision: whether to accept Vader's offer of Sith training and become his loyal disciples. To my delight, every single player accepted, eager to explore the dark side of the Force.
The success of our Star Wars-themed weekend left everyone buzzing with excitement. The players requested that we incorporate SW5e into our regular rotation of campaigns, to which I happily obliged. As the newly appointed DMJ (Dungeon Master-Jedi), I couldn't be more thrilled to lead them on their next adventure in a galaxy far, far away.
Below, I've included the blank character sheet I created for our Star Wars adventure, along with additional resources to help streamline the learning curve of SW5e for our group. Please note: Some stats on species have been removed in an attempt to ease the learning curve for our SW5e weekend event.
Feel free to use these materials in your own sessions, and may the dice be with you!

2024.05.07 05:18 Tradveles r/ComicBookCollabs Contest? [Upvote for Revival]

I recently stumbled on some of the old collab contest posts on here and thought I’d entered an alternate dimension or something.
It was great to see such an awesome level of cooperation and community spirit. I can’t be the only one that wishes these were back.
I think the key to any revival of a contest event is simplicity. It looked like a lot of work went in to run those, as well as the Anthology. Much respect!
I’m proposing one or two yearly minimalist contests. And entries are voted on by reddit users via third party poll system. Contests will be as lean as possible in terms of operating and requirements.
So here we are:
  1. Summer Collab Fest Contest- Any genre comic shorts 2 page* entries for a mid-summer contest and voted on by community.
  2. Halloween Page Fright Contest- Horror themed comic shorts 2 page* entries voted on by community. (I love the idea of a “Covers Only” category here for Cover Artists
?)
One category for entry:
  1. 2 Page Comic (Solo or Team)
Public community vote for the winner and runner-up. Four awards available.
  1. Best Comic Winner
  2. Best Comic Runner-Up
A second public vote/poll for
“The Spirit Award” (BeginneNewcomer Comic)
  1. Winner
  2. Runner-Up
I like to include beginners despite the steep learning curve required, so would like to see an award vote/poll for Best Newcomer Comic aka The Spirit Award. This is based on effort, style and spirit not on the polished or professional composition of the work.
No financial prize — Just a badge of honour and credential in the comics community — for years to come!
All entries will be user posted to a private subreddit for later viewing. Advanced notice on the polls opening will be given. So everyone has a chance to vote. Ceremonial post for winners and runners up to give them the floor for a speech
and so we can upvote them to boost their karma scores as legends.
(No paid/hired/commissioned/commercial work, no fan/AI art or explicit / NSFW content allowed for entry)
Future options:
  1. A Guest Judge each year to hand-pick winners and runners-up for the “Prestige” Awards for Best Comic and Spirit. They will have comic experience producing/publishing whether traditional or self publishing. (Esteemed members of this community perhaps?)
  2. Alternatively, if we could secure a Guest Judge Panel of 3 (at least) then we could remove the need for public voting and create a lean admin role for the contest.
  3. There could be the option of collecting entries into a PDF and releasing it for free as a yearly Anthology, with creator consent. Also listing winners and runner-ups in an introduction page. Perhaps an intro by the Guest Judge? This would become a published credit for all those involved and well deserved. (Dependent on volunteer expertise and time commitment.)
What does everyone think?
Would you take part?
Any other ideas, possibilities, issues or limitations?
EDIT1: *Past contests have been 2 pages. At 2 pages everyone has the same challenge and page space to operate. It also keeps things on the lower end in terms of production, time investment and everyone reading submissions in good time before voting.
EDIT2: This is a Collab sub in name and at times in practice and spirit; however, I feel the goal of the contest is to create first and join in the contest, whether solo or team. But collabs are encouraged where possible.
EDIT3: A simple entry submission system. A private subreddit where the entry is entered as a post by user and comic added as image. Synopsis in body of post. Credits added later. Then submissions will be checked and verified.
This private subreddit of entries will then be open, for viewing, upvotes will be symbolic, as voting will take place elsewhere
 for a limited time only

EDIT4: Public voting can be manipulated so there needs to be a fair process. Therefore votes will take place via link to an external vote/poll website StrawPoll. VPNs will be blocked. Your IP address is your unique ID for one vote. Reddit username is required for voting. This will be checked, and needs to be valid, and with acceptable reddit age or vote may be void.
Having an instantly viewable subreddit archive of each contest submissions for future viewing is a nice thought. 👍

2024.05.07 04:05 UnlimitedPowah13 Holy Roman Empire historical drama/documentary series.

Hello, people! I love studying European history and was very inspired by a video made by Dieu Le Roi listing every state of the Holy Roman Empire that made me think about how cool it would be to make a series showing the history of every state of the Holy Roman Empire, though I first thought about the opening. Here are my thoughts:
The opening would be similar to the one from Game of Thrones, with a map of Central Europe being displayed. The start would be the border between Middle Francia and East Francia disappearing through Otto's conquests, then crowns and bishop hats appearing in the several very autonomous states that were formed. At some point, the Pope’s Triregnum and the Emperor’s crown would approach one another just south of the Alps in the map and clash, with the space between them being the starting point of a crack in the map that would be the shape of the frontiers of the Italian city-States, representing the Investiture Controversy and how the fights between Popes and Emperors was essential to the fragmentation of Northern Italy. The screen would move away, showing first the Great Interregnum that happened from 1250 to 1273 happening through the disappearance of the Holy Roman Emperor's crown. After that, the Babemberg coat of arms would be in Austria, disappear, then the Wittelsbach coat of arms would go from Bavary to Austria. Some areas of the map (the electorates) would have their rulers' crowns reuniting in Frankfurt and the Holy Roman Emperor's Crown would appear again in the middle of them, then the rise of the Habsburgs in Austria would be shown through the appearance of their coat of arms in Switzerland, which would move to Frankfurt with the Emperor's crown being put over it (this part would happen at the same time as the one with the electors), go to Austria, "kick" the coat of arms of the House of Wittelsbach and grow in size, always with the map being yellow under it, then several curve lines would shoot from Vienna to the capitals of realms which the Habsburgs acquired through marriage through all of Europe, which themselves would turn yellow and raise little crowns to represent those acquisitions, and a visibly wide line would shoot from Madrid to the west of the screen, not showing it but referencing that the Habsburgs had most of the American Continent for a time. Then random things would be shown, like the promotion of places to Free Imperial Cities through the change of colours in their territories and the kicking of the crowns of the state rulers that used to rule over those cities before their promotions to Free Imperial Cities. That could be followed by a bunch of ships and carriages moving between several of those cities and others in North Germany to reference the Hanseatic League. Since Italy was partially still nominally under the HRE by that time, the Renaissance could be shown through the style of the opening animation being since the start like the style of those Medieval illuminated manuscript drawings, but in Italy starting to become more realistic, like Renaissance paintings, and with that spreading to the rest of the screen as the opening continues. After that, Bohemia would get partially purple to represent the Hussite movement and the territory where Martin Luther started preaching his Protestantism would become blue and spread to most of the Protestant regions of the time, with Bohemia becoming blue as well, since the Hussites joined the Protestants. The Pope’s Triregnum, several Bishop hats from all of the Empire and the Holy Roman Emperor’s crown would position themselves around those blue areas in the map, as if containing and fighting against Protestantism, representing the Religious wars of the time. When the Peace of Westphalia happens, the Holy Roman Empire, which in the map would until then be represented by an unified territory of slightly different colours, would be partially cut in size (because it was indeed reduced) and each region, instead of only having marginally different colours, would have very distinct and vibrant colours, all of that united only by a dotted red line around the territory of the Empire, and the crowns of the governors of all those realms (dukes, counts, kings, Bishops, Archbishops, et cetera) would appear and grow in size while the Emperor’s crown, in Vienna, would diminish, representing how the Holy Roman Empire became much more divided after 1648 and local princes had by then much more authority than the Emperor. The Siege of Vienna would then be shown, with some animated attacking element coming from Ottoman-dominated Hungary to Vienna, but with miniatures of winged hussars and other soldiers from stated of the Holy Roman Empire and kick out whatever the animated attacking Ottoman element may be (I do not know how it could be fittingly represented). Then several wars in which the Holy Roman Empire was involved, like the War of Austrian Sucession, would be represented, with the French Revolution being the final one and the map changing a lot due to German Mediatization. In the end of the opening, the camera view would descend to the lowest point of the map and quickly go forward to the north, now horizontally showing all the brightly colored regions (allowing for geography to be included as well) and several crowns and clashing against one another, carriages and soldier miniatures moving, floating treaty papers and other things being shown through the way, ending with the title of the series being shown when the camera reaches the frontier with Denmark, showing a big and stylized "Holy Roman Empire" title, with some elements from the episode in which the opening is happening being displayed around the title. At all times during the opening, big cities would be displayed with some small (relative to the screen) fortifications and famous buildings rising from the ground (or flourishing mechanically like in the Game of Thrones opening) and continuously expanding, maybe with patrician coats of arms appearing a little bit as well, especially in the Free Imperial Cities, representing how, despite all the fights, conflicts and wars, cities were growing and becoming more and more important during all this time. The opening theme would be “Our Destiny” by the band “Two Steps From Hell”, because that song sounds very epic, in a way that really reminds you about big movie adventures in the Middle Ages (and Modern Era, of course), plus being only melody, not having lyrics, thus not bothering the audience, which would be focused on what is happening in the screen. It would be a long opening judging by the amount of elements and the extension of the song, but that would not be a bothersome aspect, in my opinion. Some other things that could be in the opening would be the appearance/emergence of different styles of architecture (Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, et cetera) during the previously mentioned rise of buildings from the ground. Additionally, the series itself would have seasons with several episodes, with individual episodes covering specific things (like the Medici Bank, the history of Nuremberg or the election of an important Emperor), while arcs would cover extended historical events (like Empire-wide wars, the Investiture Controversy, that one long Interregnum, et cetera), season endings representing crucial things in the Empire’s history (the resolution of the Investiture Controversy, the election of the first Habsburg Emperor, the Peace of Westphalia, the French Revolution in the very ending of the series, among others), with the seasons I thought about being the following: season 1 is from the Frankish Empire to the formation of the Holy Roman Empire by Otto I, Otto I to the end of the Investiture Controversy as season 2, the Renaissance as season 3 (this one being highly focused on Italy and with Luther nailing his 96 complaints being the post-credits scene of the final episode), the Hussite Movement and Protestant Reformation as season 4 (ending with the Peace of Westphalia) and the rest of the Modern Age as season 5, ending with the French Revolution but with the episode being specifically about the history of Austria allowing for part of the episode happening after the Holy Roman Empire, maybe (very maybe) showing the Confederation of the Rhine, German Unification and, the World Wars and the current era. Every single state with Imperial Immediacy would have its history shown in one episode, with some small states with not very long histories and physical proximity being put in the same episodes. Some episodes would be longer than others, with Austria's episode (the final one, with its foundation, the rise of the Habsburgs, the French Revolution and all) being the lenght of a movie. What do you think about this idea?

2024.05.06 10:11 Sorry_Following8619 Looking for help - ÂŁ800 budget PC

1. What will you be doing with this PC?
I am looking to build a gaming/work PC for coding projects & to play high quality games like City Skylines 2 and Hogwarts Legacy well with high graphics. I am going for PURE performance.
2. What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
Most PC parts I find either have free shipping/prime, so anywhere between ÂŁ700 - ÂŁ850 is good
3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? I am looking for advice on this matter. Right now, my PC is 7 years old and there are a lot of windows features that are breaking that I need to do work. However, I am open to the option of waiting until black friday to get the best deals, especially on the GPU that I am going for (I'll mention later)
4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget?
GPU, CPU, CPU Cooler, RAM, Storage, Case, Power Supply, Motherboard
5. Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in?
The UK
6. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing?
I will be re-using my external hardware such as my ÂŁ200 MSI Curved 165 Hz monitor, my ÂŁ25 razer mouse, ÂŁ20 victsing keyboard and ÂŁ80 blue snowball mic
7. Will you be overclocking?
I would be open to overclocking. However if certain CPUs cost too much for the overclocking feature, then I would rather not get it. I am planning on building a solid PC for now, I don't plan on upgrading in the near future.
8. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build?
I have decided on the RTX 4060 ti 16 gb to future proof for v-ram requirements, and generally I like NVIDIA drivers & dlss & ray tracing extras. However, the market price for these is around ÂŁ450, and to budget this PC I will need to either find a good deal or wait for the price to drop i.e. on black friday. I was wondering if in any of your experiences, prices could actually drop to that reasonable ÂŁ350 level.
I'm going for the 12400F or 12600KF CPU as they are relatively cheap (ÂŁ100-ÂŁ150) compared to their next gen 13th which go for ÂŁ250. I have found a CPU cooler at ÂŁ16 which is a pretty good for what I need [Thermalright Assassin X 120 Refined SE 66.17 CFM CPU Cooler].
For RAM, I am going to need 2x 16 GB (32GB total).
For storage, am looking for either a bargain 1TB SSD, or a 500GB SSD with a 1/2TB external HDD.
9. Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
I do not care about visuals, I don't mind getting the cheapest case on the market as long as it can fit everything I need, I am going for purely performance.
10. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget?
I don't need it in the budget, but I do plan on using windows.
11. Extra info or particulars: Do you guys have any recommendations on whether I should wait on black friday - as there should be great deals (my current pc is slowing down and a lot of windows features are broken), or if I should build it now - what parts or changes could I make to get the best value for my money. And if you have any information on when to wait for deals.
