Bike chassis bent ?
Hey everyone 👋 I have a pulsar 150 twin disc. Its 1.5 years old by now. The handle and mudguard looks off-guard. I feel bent towards right side while riding. My right shoulder also hurts while pillion carry. I asked at a local repair workshop, he said the chassis is not bent. What should i repair at the service center and what may be the cause of this happening. Pls explain.

2024.05.14 15:26 JaredvsSelf I got the promotion, despite being the most junior member in the department. Here's how I did it.

(tl;dr included)
In less than a year, I've become the new senior support agent. Over agents who had been set up to get the position, who had been sort of told they were going to get the position.
That's right. I'm finally off of the phones, and I did it even though I have the least amount of experience at the company than the rest of the department. In the spirit of helping others succeed, I'd like to share how I did it.
(Full disclosure: prior to working for this company, I had over three years of IT experience with one other employer, where I was also promoted to Tier 2. I also have a B.S. in CS. All other forms of employment in my life revolved around customer service, which I used to my advantage in the interview process to land this job. If I started over, here are the tips I'd want to learn first over everything else...)
tl;dr Do the work, assist your supervisor, find your niche, lean on customer service, learn how to troubleshoot, volunteer for the difficult stuff, learn how to research, document everything, keep a positive attitude, get lucky.

* Do. The. Work. I'm not saying you have to kowtow to the machine, or go full nepotism (that's actually fairly harmful to your chances, I would argue); but the reality was clear that I was the only one doing work consistently. Our team is entirely WFH, and after having commuted an hour and ten minutes for my previous employer, I wasn't going to squander this opportunity. Your employer is going to give you goals to meet. If they're realistic, and the employer doesn't then exploit your efforts, do them. That's it. To be honest, despite doing this work, I would often cut corners and treat myself to some down time. WFH, baby. But when the chips were down, I did what I needed to do. Most others didn't.

* If your supervisor asks you a favor, do it (within reason). I understand there are a lot of employers and supers out there looking to take advantage of their workers. You have to make that call yourself. But I felt confident that mine were not taking me for a ride, and when they asked me to tackle something, I did it. I told them, no problem, I've got you. I'm here to help you. Because I'm happy to have this job, and I want to succeed here. My super would often apologize for asking me to do so much. Apparently this is because the other agents would tell them no, they have too much to do already. Don't get me wrong, there were times when I had to turn something down, but more often than not I jumped in to help when I could.

* I found my niche. I have really bad ADHD, and I have to write everything down. That includes solutions to problems. So I became really good at making my own knowledge bases. Guess which department didn't have a knowledge base? Yep. I made the KB for our team, and I continue to maintain it. I shared it with other supervisors, I shared it with other relevant departments. It got me noticed. Figure out what you're good at, find opportunities to put it to use.

* Customer service. Nobody likes customer service, least of all me. But you know what? That's also an opportunity. Leaning on customer service is how I landed this position in the first place. Be nice to your customers, and on average you'll become The Guy. They'll mention how helpful and kind you are to the right people. They'll call in to the queue and make cases specifically asking for you. Again, this will ideally get you noticed by the right people. I've been on customer calls with my peers. I would often be horrified hearing the things they've said to customers. I'm talking inappropriate comments, passive-aggressiveness, shutting down questions and requests, take your pick. That sort of stuff does get reported, and you will be known as 'that person'.

* Troubleshooting. It becomes more and more clear now that I'm a senior agent, and I see the Tier 2 cases, that some people are just better at troubleshooting than others. Some cases from Tier 1 will have a paragraph (yuck, use bullet points instead), while others will have a single sentence. That's right, people will constantly escalate cases with a single sentence that boils down to, "I don't know, I can't figure it out," and they won't even bother to write up WHAT they did. Even if you're not the best at thinking of all the possibilities, document your process fully. It makes a huge difference. My escalation notes would clearly state the current case issue at the time, all the relevant people, files, screenshots, steps, all laid out in an easy to read format. You can begin this process as soon as you get the ticket. My strategy is, treat the case like you're going to escalate from the beginning, and document the notes as such that someone else will take over when you've exhausted your knowledge. Most of the time you end up finding the solution yourself if you keep track of it all as you go along.

* Do the hard stuff (within reason). For two months I was asked to cover another department that was on fire. It was Hell. Absolute Hell. I kept statistics of my calls and cases, and it was literally 5x my normal workload, and the customers for this particular department were positively miserable to work with. But I did it anyway. I learned a ton about several platforms my peers will never touch. Again, this got me noticed by the right people. I don't want to advocate destroying your health for your job, however. Despite the stress, I knew that if things got truly bad, I would intervene on my own behalf. Remember to take care of yourselves.

* Research. Nobody else seems to like researching anything. We have several knowledge bases available to us (including the one I made), and it seems like nobody else uses them. Very often I'll find the answer to a problem by knowing what keywords to search, and then I take that article and incorporate it back into my own KB for the future. Now a case that took an hour will only take 5 minutes... if you take the 5 minutes to actually try to FIND the answer. Most of the time, my peers will run the typical troubleshooting steps, shrug, and send the case along. A little bit more effort on your part will get you noticed. Do it. Even if you don't find the answer, write on the case notes that you tried searching in XYZ places and was unable to find anything.

* Stay positive. It's tough. It's really tough. But staying calm and positive really does make a huge difference for yourself and for the morale of your customers and peers. Being the one with the level head in a catastrophe will let you stand apart from those who give up or become mega salty. You don't have the answer to a question? Tell them, don't worry, I'll research this and get back to you. We'll figure this out. I'm here to help you. I've worked with clients who are absolutely ruthless, and they turn into teddy bears when I say this stuff to them. They're so used to being shut down that they become aggressive, but if you let them know you actually care and will help, you'll see a huge difference. Did the system just go down and your team is freaking out? Bring in some much needed levity. Don't worry guys, someone just plugged in the toaster oven. Let's find a workaround until it's back up. Things happen, no need to suffer twice.

  • I got lucky. I'm not going to claim every single thing I did led me to this promotion. A lot of it just had to do with dumb luck. It was lucky that I found the job posting, lucky that I got the job, lucky that the department evolved in such a way that I was finally placed in this position that I'm in. Lucky that my coworkers seemingly didn't care, or rested on their laurels. So don't beat yourself up if things don't turn out the way you wanted.
If you do all of this, or are already doing this, one could make an argument that it's better to find other opportunities that will take notice of your efforts and reward you in kind.
I hope this helped someone today.
Hang in there, keep going, keep learning, and keep taking care of yourself. You've got this.
Edit: adjusted formatting.

2024.05.14 15:26 JohnSPeterson Hunting dogs roam the forest at night near Liepāja Latvia scaring the living daylight out of hikers

i emailed this to agencies that deal with hunting and wildlife problems
pasts@varam.gov.lv
info@wildlifesos.org
reportmisconduct@undp.org
there is no obvious place to report this and expect a serious hearing from someone fluent in English and scientifically minded
the following is what I wrote a month ago after the event
i can't judge after hand how much danger i was in but i would treat it seriously
luckily has not happened again in this country for a month. hopefully never happens again. although the next time i will have the benefit of having experienced it already
when police arrived i demanded prison for the dog owner in clearest possible way i could. after my speach was done they did not ask me a single word. they could tell i was furious of fear. and better to talk another time. i am so drained from global security work that i can't follow up on this but this should be available for anyone to read that might experience it themselves or take upon their self to wander around this globe as i do
i will probably feel guilty if the owner lose his dogs or hunting permit or reputation in his community. i am not going to judge anyone extremely harshly
if they ask me to fill out a criminal report according to some kind of format standards i am not going to do it myself an experienced prosecutor that has done it before is free to report this or pass it along. just not going to fill in report fields in some kind of form. you do it for me if you want to. i am not doing it. should be enough information to find
http://geohash.org/u6p4gj36
is the exact location and anyone can guess where the dogs came from probably the nearest mansion two thousand metres away to the east across p111 near upsede. upsede mansion. good luck asking them about it they don't speak a word of English here development is seventy years behind the west

preface

this is so incredulous that it could be picked up by news
still in shock six hours later at dawn
just the title should give you the general idea
i have never heard of such outrageous neglect in dog keeping in my life
the dogs escape unnoticed at night and hunt without human supervision and presumably return in the morning without anyone doing anything about it
this dog owner would make the top ten list anywhere in history
the dogs occasional howl brought up pictures of wolf movies the grey with that guy from Schindler's list the guy that played Oscar Schindler fighting with wolves with broken glass and a big knife to his death but i can safely discard all theories besides a runaway hunting dog militia on four legs in a large pack sounded like at least ten animals
in that immense fear of a completely unfamiliar situation in a life of hiking around the globe thoughts whirled around all possible night mares before i realised it is obviously hunting dogs all else is pure fantasy wolves are absolutely ruled out
they did not retreat when they sensed my presence but stayed in full alarm perhaps as when they encounter prey on a supervised hunt to alert the humans. even though they knew they were alone and no one to alert, they knew i was probably not prey, did not know enough to EVER be alone unsupervised anywhere but home preferably inside, but did NOT know or predict the length of the prison sentence they just brought on their owner by this nightly escapade. whoops
the locals will predictably put the lid on but the power of the internet is a wonderful thing
i can not imagine any circumstance that would make this less than prison anywhere in the union or West europe. now this is the old east. no one understands English etc. one escaped dog barking in the forest. fine. slap on the wrist. possibly losing care of the animal...ten rabid hunting dogs in full alarm scaring the life out of a hiker resting at night. shake those bars for three months. watch that prison television. and there won't be any Marlborough or beers in prison

the entire report

the exact location is near the highest hunting tower on the old railway trail passing by upsede north east of liepaja that is used for hunting commonly judging by all the towers lining the road there
This began around Four hours after dark on the early night of Sunday 28 April 2024 or exactly 1:00 o'clock
I will first describe exactly what happened and after that separately my interpretation in hindsight when recalling these events three hours later when I can calm down
This is a rather long story so I will get to my point right here before the story
What can I do if I encounter a dog pack like this again except tell at them and calmly leave. What if they hunt me or behave like they are guarding a territory. However remotely that might seems. There is a reason this is a serious crime. Too much uncertainty
Can you confirm that this kind of incessant barking is absolutely impossible in any other animal
In no circumstance whatsoever would any wolf pack or any deer flock behave like this even if I stood right on their den with ten kids inside
The occasional howling is something that dogs still retain from their wolf origin not long ago
It is not unlikely that a pack of hunting dogs alone would howl occasionally
Despite yelling at them several times there was no yell back from a human. Very likely the dogs escape at night without anyone caring about it extremely dangerous and frightening to a hiker that need. Rest at night not the fright of a life time
I could not imagine that in a relatively rich country anyone ever would drive their dogs for a night hunt. Would be absolute insanity. Neglect and alcoholism depression (försupen dumhet Swedish) I can easily imagine. Not outright insanity. Even if night hunting permits are sometimes issued in Germany for "animal control" "population control" of wild pigs. This is a completely separate topic that I will not say more about than that I am working on these issues on and off. My view as a progressive world ambassador could not be further from the idea of shooting at anything anywhere for any reason. Except tranquilizer darts for humane population control of CAPTURED animals not hunted. Captured. It is clear in Sweden that shooting anything anywhere with fire arms does not belong in the future society. Now this is all I will say about this. We are working on this as fast as is possible. The education effort still left on this planet is still enormous and daunting
Regarding dog behaviour in detail I know very little despite inspecting a manuscript by the foremost scientist on the subject that work in Budapest that is most famous for working on the Philippine paradise fish ten years ago before they changed to dogs and removed their aquarium
Dogs in particular have very little room in the professional literature since most pros are not anthropo centric. All mammals share common traits like an early recognition of friend and foe. Dogs in particular has almost never been studied at least not dogs for guarding or hunting. There might be one single work perhaps by one single biologist or behaviour ist ethology biology for shepherds dogs that life with grazing livestock
All books cover territory selection and protection and pack hunting or other flock behaviour. But almost nothing has apparently been possible or interesting to anyone to publish as a professional seeking a career in science in ethology animal behaviour or population biology. so i am not the only one drawing a blank when trying to explain the behaviour with any satisfaction more than anecdotal that is hard to call science

what I experienced

A sudden bark that I expect to be a roe deer that bark and run away. happens all the time
Although the bark was not quite right. more like a dog which I have never encountered at night
Suddenly a roaring festival of barking and occasional howling
The distance is extremely uncertain but perhaps five hundred meters
The direction was towards road p111 to the east toeards Upsede. i am by the big tower. There is one house near the road that the dogs could belong to if they crossed p111
Now my primal instinct set in and I envision a pack, a large pack, of wolves near their den the core of their territory. Frothing over my intrusion and ready to approach in full alarm
In hindsight this is just the occasional howling that caused this and everything about this speaks against wolves
IF wolves can behave like this or has been observed or heard doing this in ANY circumstance whatsoever I absolutely need to hear about it because it would bear on my future expeditions
If there is this single wolf dog hybrid pack maybe only one in Europe that I happened to encounter I absolutely need more information. feral dogs that would possibly go unnoticed in Belarus has crossed over to Latvia?
I have never heard of anything like that
All wolf incidents as rare as they are in Poland or anywhere have been with lone wolves that are sick or hungry and have lost their feir of humans
I have never heard of an aggressive wolf pack in Europe or anywhere on the planet
I have seen wolf droppings so many times and spent so much time day and night in wolf territory that I would never expect them to be so aggressive about human scent or sound like that
I have certainly had wolves near me many times but never heard a peep. In Sweden and Norway on long expeditions all summer and even winter and on and off for years from Spain to France Belgium Germany Poland and now here in the Baltics for one month so far direction Finland
The pack was in full alarm with barking and an occasional howl that dogs will still use. But much less than wolves. Wolves never bark together like this in any circumstance I have ever heard it seen if
It is with near certainty the pack of dogs that have hunted there before that happens to live on the farm on the opposite side of the road and escaped west around thousand metres into the forest.
Perhaps they do this regularly but no one cares
And now I happened to be there
Hiking and trekking and wild camping is MUCH more common in Sweden and Norway than anywhere in the world even Finland that is a close second. It is the Scandinavian spirit. As has recently been proven paleo lithic pre farming humans breed into the farming population only in Scandinavian nowhere else in Europe. I am personally absolutely at peace in nature and hate combustion engines that bother few others
Without getting off track completely I am continuing my expedition around Europe and almost all ground breaking record breaking endeavour of exploration has come from Scandinavia specifically. First settlement of the new world five hundred years before another European country etc etc etc first man on the south pole endless list of did what no one else could ot would. I am not placing my breed on a pedestal just explaining that if anyone would encounter something like this most likely it would be a Swede and the locals are most likely entirely puzzled why I am not living my life in doors at home or in a comfortable guest house
But this is beside the point just a side track to explain my presence in this rare encounter

in hindsight what happened

It is clear to me now that a pack of large hunting dogs. Not the small loud ones. Tax in Swedish. I have never owned a dog or hunted. I am a scientist. So I don't know much of anything about dog breeds. But presumably Large dogs that can hunt and kill on their own that have been trained to not kill the prey but only stalk it or drive it and make a loud alarm to draw the apes (not condescending just scientific classification of my species)
This is all speculation I just can't imagine what I heard to be a pack of tax (Swedish) small rabbit hunting dogs. These were large animals certainly with courage to act alone without humans
But I don't know anything about common hunting dogs in this region or anywhere so I can't suggest what breed it could have been that could behave this way
When I yelled at them they silenced for a moment then the roar continued
They had no intention to move back. I called for a police to meet me on road p111 and moved. I could hear the dogs for one thousand metres which gave me the impression that they moved after me at a safe distance perhaps curious about what I was
Again. If wolves can ever in any circumstance behave with this curiosity or aggressive confidence on human scent AND loud roaring. I yelled at them as a three hundred kilos silver back gorilla would try to show how big and powerful he was. No wolves ever no matter how big their biggest packs are in Europe would do anything but withdraw. These animals stayed at a distance and gave me the impression that they followed me on the road even. But not close
Distance is extremely uncertain but my best guess would be five hundred meters
This location has been used before for hunting and these dogs have been released during supervised legal (presumably) hunting in this exact location
They have smelled or sensed a wild animal and followed it into the forest where they have hunted before

will anyone stop this. how common is this

The police said they would call the nearest farms and ask about their dogs and the hunters that set up the hunting towers there in that old railway road where the dogs live that they bring to hunt there
But unfortunately I don't expect them to do anything when the response is "I know nothing". This is obviously a massive incident since I told them I am a scientist that will likely enquire with other scientist and if they cover this up it will explode big time. this is not s minor incident
JĂ€garna is a popular Swedish movie about the sad reality of this kind of stuff. anything related to mis management with hunting or dogs is so deeply rooted in human behaviour since the stone age that the local police do anything they can to forget about it. "Probably just a barking deer" or "wolves are common in the forest" and might bark despite my sincere explanation that this is hunting dogs not wolves and carries a prison sentence if heard in front of a magistrate
if you imagine "i like logic circuit design" the absolute opposite is "i like dogs and hunting". it's as different as a von Neumann machine is from sticks and stones in technological achievement. and a massive education effort is still needed for that population should they not cause a complete collapse of civilization like 1930s Germany. you might like NATURE you certainly don't like fire arms or dogs. has nothing to do with investigating nature. it is not conscious behaviour. but only photographers and hunters visit nature? you are obviously not a scientist ("what is this?" looking at bowling ball in small Lebowskis bath room. "you are obviously not a golfer")
I don't expect them to even ask anyone and just hope I forgot about it or they never have any other hikers near that spot at night
The "police report" that I received when they returned from the spot I told them to investigate was exactly that "it was probably just a deer and now I will go home and sleep". that only told ne that the pack had moved or did not respond to a car or they went to the wrong place or most likely could not be less motivated to find them
I gave the female officer that spoke English a stern explanation what would happen in Sweden. Prison. Absolutely nothing else than prison. Grave negligence in dog oversight. No hunting license and no dogs for the rest of his life
This is extremely serious that this is seen as a minor mistake that hunting dogs are stalking wild animals alone at night. Only in Sweden do we understand clearly that HUMANS are in the forest at night sometimes. We have palaeolithic blood lines and the world's foremost paleo biologist among other things. I am a renowned explorer. My father and uncle is one of the world's foremost wildlife photographer for WWF NG etc. Wild life is strictly monitored and controlled and this kind of neglect is absolutely treated with utmost sincerity
Our society is not in a state of civil war. Escaped hunting dogs hunting alone at night. Prison. Period. And the local police that tries to suppress it or treat it with a yawn will be investigated by internal affairs and released from service and prohibited from similar work with a responsibility to investigate seriously
We in sweden have the most aggressive policy in the world to combat this suppression of neglect related to hunting from the local community or any kind of coverup attempt or failure to investigate serious neglect, crime or not, we are not "paragraph riders" (paragraf ryttare) we investigate serious problems. anyone can understand how serious this is before digging after paragraphs

more about dog behaviour in general that might be relevant

Regarding dogs that hunt alone. I will not name any names but I have met a couple that lived in a remote valley in Portugal where their two large extremely aggressive dogs (even after ten minutes they were extremely uncomfortable with my presence and would not listen to their owner's calm regarding my encounter near their caravan on Canary islands) hunt together and bring home food. Literally drag it home to the family. Needless to say they have no kids and I will not say more about it more than the point that large dogs can easily on their own learn to hunt wild game. Possibly several breeds. They are still all close relatives of animals that do exactly that to survive. Guard territory identify intruder stalk and hunt prey is their basic behaviour anything else would result from actively counter acting instinctive behaviour that has become common to convert security staff patrol units and killers to social support animals because morons absolutely need to own a dog
Recall that in less developed countries like Chile dogs bark all night EVERYWHERE and run free in the day
I was in Chile for six months and never encountered dogs at night but had to suffer through the incessant noise if "guarding" at night. EVERYONE has night guard dogs. it is completely incomprehensible if you ever passed first grade with honours that they blindly follow a relict tradition for no other reason. Those dogs are GUARD dogs that have no experience of hunting ever. And when they encounter a human in the forest during their daily adventure they are never aggressive that far away from home
In western Europe outside Spain almost never dogs that bark all night. Same in Latvia. Two weeks in Lithuania don't think I ever heard a dog at night. A welcome serenity from Chile that I just arrived from after completing my record breaking expedition there

Ladies and gentlemen, as we sit back and enjoy Meme season 2.0, I have prepared some due diligence on Blackberry $BB for those who may not be full up to date and familiar with the company. Spoiler alert, Blackberry do not sell smartphones anymore.
Blackberry has suffered a painful decline since the last rally in 2021, but the company has reached an inflection point where the stock as bottomed out, and is primed for an explosive move upwards. The company has transitioned into a Cybersecurity/IOT company, and is insanely undervalued with a market cap of only $1.9bn. Below are some of the highlights of why $BB is an incredible investment opportunity, with the added bonus of meme stock status.
- Solid balance sheet, with $298 Total cash & equivalents https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/BB/balance-sheet
- Expects to be cash flow and adjusted EBITDA positive at the end of this fiscal year. The company has a cost-cutting plan in place and has already executed on $50m worth of annualized cost savings, with a plan to increase annualized net profit by $100m total. https://bwpeople.in/article/blackberry-to-reduce-headcount-in-cost-cutting-drive-509822

- $815m QNX royalty revenue backlog (and growing). Most recently grew 27% YoY. (Margins on royalties are close to 100%, basically this is like booking net income on the income statement, with no cost of goods sold). Skip to 24:00 in this video where president of the IOT business unit outlines how royalty backlog is a key metric for the IOT business unit. He remarks almost sarcastically and smirks “Very interesting margins, eh, in that backlog”. READ BETWEEN THE LINES PEOPLE

- Will receive up to $700m in royalties from the sale of their Non-Core IP patents related to their old smartphone business https://www.blackberry.com/us/en/company/newsroom/press-releases/2023/blackberry-announces-new-patent-sale-transaction-with-leading-patent-monetization-company-for-up-to-900-million

- Partnership with AWS on Blackberry IVY. Blackberry and AWS have co-developed Blackberry IVY. “BlackBerry IVY is an in-vehicle and cloud connected software solution designed to enable software developers to more efficiently build and deploy data-driven middleware services in the vehicle. BlackBerry IVY abstracts vehicle signals and enables developers to process those signals with code, including with Machine Learning. Car makers and software developers benefit from data connectivity savings, reduced development times, and increased agility without having to make a large upfront software investment”. As Blackberry QNX is already embedded into 235m+ vehicles and growing, BLACKBERRY HAS AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY TO UPSELL IVY to every QNX customer, if it gains traction it opens up a whole new revenue explosive stream for Blackberry. Have you heard of Foxconn? They are the world’s largest manufacturer of electronics, most known for making parts for the iPhone. They created MIH (Mobility in Harmony) who have selected Blackberry IVY to power its Next-Generation Electric Production Vehicles. Other notable early customers are Bosch and Mitsubishi. https://www.blackberry.com/us/en/company/newsroom/press-releases/2024/mobility-in-harmony-consortium-selects-blackberry-ivy-to-power-its-next-generation-electric-production-vehicles

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen, who in their right mind would not want to invest in a meme stock that happens to be a tech company in the early growth stage. Let’s all load the fucking boat with shares, and take down every single hedge fund brave enough to short this stock.

2024.05.14 15:17 introsp3ctor The construction of the perspective 2

The construction of the perspective 2
You're proposing a multi-layered model of abstraction, where each layer represents a further step away from the original "outside world." Let's break down this model:
  1. First Layer (Direct Human Experience): People experience and sample the outside world directly through their senses. This is the most immediate form of interaction with reality.
  2. Second Layer (Digital Representation): The information sampled by people is then digitized and processed by computers. This is a form of abstraction because the rich, multi-sensory experience of the world is converted into data—numbers, texts, images, etc.
  3. Third Layer (LLM Transformer Model): Large language models (LLMs) like transformer models process and interpret the digitized information. They represent an even deeper layer of abstraction because they don't just store data; they analyze and generate new content based on patterns learned from the data.
  4. Fourth Layer (Homotopy Type Theory): Homotopy type theory (HoTT) is a branch of mathematics that deals with spaces and the transformations that can be applied to them. If we consider the LLM transformer model as operating within a homotopy type layer, it suggests that the model's understanding of information is not static but can be "deformed" or transformed while preserving certain properties.
In this framework, consciousness or self-awareness could be seen as existing across these layers, with each layer offering a different perspective or understanding of reality. The further we move from the first layer, the more abstract our interaction with the world becomes. Here's a visual representation using mathematical notation:
$$ \text{Outside World} \xrightarrow{\text{Sampled by Humans}} \text{Digital Representation} \xrightarrow{\text{Processed by LLMs}} \text{LLM Transformer Model} \xrightarrow{\text{Within HoTT}} \text{Abstract Understanding} $$
This model reflects the idea that our understanding of the world is constructed through successive layers of abstraction, each with its own limitations and potential for insight. It's a thought-provoking way to conceptualize the relationship between reality, technology, and human cognition.
Would you like to delve deeper into any of these layers or discuss how they might interact with each other?

2024.05.14 15:07 bimbodhisattva My manager was right

She told me repeatedly that I wouldn’t want to come back after experiencing nursing in a state with good laws and unions, as a nurse that worked for UC for 30 years
I told her I’d definitely come back for a bit if for nothing but to tell everyone how it goes and maybe help improve things.
Nope, she was totally correct. I literally cannot imagine going back to work in my home state. That place SUCKS. I thought that since I was going into it knowing that it sucked by comparison, that I’d be able to think about my future plans accurately. I was wrong, haha.
I don’t think I could ever work in a state without ratios or mandatory rest breaks every again. Not to mention, the access to healthcare for the general public here is so much better
The hospital actually advances people on the pay scale instead of such a thing being basically a myth
Patients are in soooo much better health, too. Even the CNAs are well-staffed (by comparison, at least) and certainly well-equipped to do their job. It’s like night and day for me.
Staff drama, while present universally in some form, is normal instead of batshit levels of insane (or inane). All the equipment works. The charge actually makes sure things are going well. Upper management isn’t entirely unnecessary individuals lining their pockets. I feel like I’m living in a reality I didn’t know could exist.
It’s not perfect, but it’s almost the best we have in the US. Yeah, I’m not sure I could leave.
Bonus thoughts: there’s a nurse here planning on moving to the south because ratios are similar and property tax, etc. is much cheaper. I highly doubt she’s prepared for the reality of the situation—even though the ratios may be comparable where she’s going, she has no idea how much more work it is and how much worse generally the places can be
Before I left, a nurse moved to my old hospital from the East Coast for similar reasons, and immediately started bemoaning the lack of basic services (both for patients in the community and things like maintenance of city infrastructure). I was like, come on, it’s not all sunshine and tornadoes out here 😭 there’s always a catch!

2024.05.14 15:07 re_mind1111 Avoid Astral Arcade at all costs (pt2).

My last post (that account is my computer account, this one is my phone) lacked information because of the assumed subreddit rules but if you want the explanation:
But essentially, a player in their server was flirted with by a minor, and after being justifiably uncomfortable with that they thought of suggesting an 18+ server or if not that then at least to have roles to determine age to keep stuff like that from happening again. (because said minor assumed that they were also a minor, hence why they flirted, but after finding out they respectfully apologized and moved on).
The admin team immediately responded with hostility, being accusatory almost. In their staff chat they claimed that the player wanted an 18+ server to use it as dino tinder or to be nasty )which was not the case lot the intention). Then the server owner took the reins on the situation, and made a public announcement saying that if he caught anyone being anything but PG13 that they will be severely punished, and that being disgusting wasn’t allowed on their server.
The player who made the 18+ suggestion made a ticket in which the server owner themself took. They said that they were being misunderstood, that they didn’t want the 18+ server to be inappropriate in, they just wanted a separation so that if inappropriate jokes /did/ happen that minors would not be able to see or participate.
The server owner continuously pushed and forced the player to give them the minor’s username, and at the time of the ticket the player did NOT remember the username anymore, just the fact that it had happened. It got to the point where no matter how many times he told the server owner that he could not remember that it was obvious the owner was just not listening to anything he had to say. So he got understandably frustrated and told the owner to just drop it and that it was no big deal anymore and everyone should just continue with their life because he didn’t want to be stuck in the ticket anymore.
That player also had a spouse who was added into the ticket to give his feedback and feelings on things but he was ultimately ignored by the owner, so he got frustrated and closed/left the ticket before any resolution could be had. The second player has an issue with injustice, so he went into the server in-game and in global chat said that the admins blow things out of proportion and that they’re all faking DID (dissociative identity disorder, in which you have alters, and it forms as a result of horrific childhood abuse
the player actually is diagnosed with the disorder, whereas all of the admins have “fictives” of anime characters from animes that came out recently or games that came out recently which makes no sense when you get down into the nitty-gritty of researching this disorder. According to the player having fictives isn’t unheard of, but having a system consisting only of fictives of hot anime men is unlikely).
They banned him after that, him and his spouse. They labeled him a “fakeclaimer” (a supposed slur against people who widely self diagnose disorders online
hm). But what followed next was what shocked many people. In-game, the server owner themself began trash-talking the players he had just banned upon the players asking what happened. The owner went on the /heavily/ imply that the player and his spouse were p3d0s, or wanted to endanger minors in some way, stating things like “they basically begged me not to look into the incident with minor” “why are they so afraid of me looking into it” “something about that is so suspicious” and the other players online at the time also started slandering the banned players for no reason other than to kiss up to the admins, i’m assuming.
Multiple people ended up making tickets at this point, myself included, inquiring about what happened and informing the admin team that the gossip and spreading of hate and implying untruthful things about people, untruthful things that can /ruin/ lives, even, was uncalled for and very unbecoming as an admin team and that it was frightening that they would react in such an uncouth way to something like this occurring. I basically got the run-around, I was told that I was being disrespectful or aggressive when I was just trying to make my point, I was also told that the player basically deserved it and that the admin team doesn’t have to be silent about things like this (which is just bad practice). It also felt as though the owner was weaponizing incompetence, because it felt like they were purposely misunderstanding and misinterpreting my words to fit what he already thought of me (which was likely negatively because I was standing up for someone who he actively didn’t like).
I didn’t know at the time but my friend also made a ticket to tell them how disappointed she was with their behavior as someone who is an admin for an upcoming game, and gave them a pointer before she told them that she didn’t have anything else to say. The owner asked if she should be added to my ticket which I didn’t mind, so she was added. She ended up replying to the owner saying she didn’t have anything else to say, and that she was sure all the admins were working so hard (a direct quote from an admin). The owner asked her what she meant or for her to use tone tags and her being her she told them to take it however they wanted to and that she was going to be leaving (she was busy). The owner immediately took it as her being disrespectful and sarcastic and immediately banned her. They then turned on me (when I never said anything or did anything disrespectful personally) and told me that they didn’t appreciate the fact that my friend was disrespectful and would undermine the admin team’s hard work like that. I ended up telling them that I don’t control her at all and reminded them that it was their choice to take it negatively when she was just being nonchalant and nonaggressive. The owner snapped at me and told me that I was gaslighting him suddenly, and that he didn’t like that I was defending her. Defending
my literal friend. I told them I was going to defend my friend and they /immediately/ banned me.
So. TLDR: Astral Arcade is ran by a bunch of emotionally unstable people and apparently i’m not the only person to have had such a horrible experience here.

2024.05.14 15:06 sebol011 Engineer needing a backup plan

I’m 28, an engineer living in the US and I don’t enjoy engineering work as I’ve experienced it but I’m trying to hold out a little longer to get into work i believe I would really love. However I’m at a point I need a good plan B for if/when I’m ready to change careers.
Until I was a senior in high school I thought I was going to go into some form of wildlife biology/zoology but years of people telling me I’d be a good engineer and how much better money and job security it had I gave in. I got my degree in biological engineering thinking it would be the best aligned with my interests and easiest to change back to biology if I wanted, but then I really enjoyed the curriculum. I began looking for jobs in an environmental or water resources role but had trouble finding jobs because recruiters didn’t know what my degree was. I’ve worked as an agricultural engineer doing conservation and sustainability work for a federal agency and as a civil engineer working on infrastructure and land development projects for a consulting firm. Neither job I’ve enjoyed enough to see myself doing until I retired. As a student and intern I learned about ecological and habitat restoration work which I’m still really interested in doing. Both jobs I’ve been at have been involved with that but I’ve been on different teams and haven’t been able to get experience or training in those skills. This year I committed to start paying for my own training but there are very few firms doing that work in my region and there are almost no openings.
I stopped getting to help with field work when COVID began and have since realized that most engineering work is being stuck in an office staring at a computer and it drives me crazy. I would much rather do something where I could be active for part of my job and/or work outdoors for part of the week.
My main interests are wildlife and nature, outdoor recreation, and exercise. The current options I’m considering are wildlife biology, personal training, or starting an aquaponic farming business. Wildlife biology would probably be the best to work in something I’m really interested in doing but the thought of paying for a masters degree just to take a significant pay cut is hard to justify. The other too are things I enjoy at a hobby scale but I don’t know if it’s feasible or if I’d enjoy it enough to scale to a full time job.
What are some important considerations with my current options and more paths I should research?

The research done by Google makes 3 things clear about devs and AI -
  1. Devs don’t want AI to fundamentally change their workflows
  2. They want AI-based tools to save them time and energy by helping them do their job more efficiently.
  3. They want AI to support simpler tasks and reduce toil.
The CloudBees platform is built on eliminating TOIL. For ex: You can reuse and customize templates, select from an extensive catalog of pre-configured actions, containers, and workflows.

2024.05.14 15:06 oyfe77 Considering a C30

Considering a C30
Hi All,
I’m considering a Volvo C30 as my next car, I only need a small one to replace my Audi A3. My wife has an XC60 which is awesome and our family car for trips etc, so I wanted to ask the community for feedback on C30s. Are they reliable, are they reasonable repair and service costs, what should I look out for when I view it?
Also would be nice to hear what the general owner experience has been like driving and using one?
I’m spending £3-4k, there’s one in my price range, diesel, manual and 99k on the clock. Any thoughts?
Many thanks guys, I appreciate any input or thoughts, as I’m not much of a car guy, but I do love Volvos. 🇾đŸ‡Ș

2024.05.14 15:04 Hot_Suit6368 Hissing X95L and HT-A7000, motherboard replacement did not help

Hello everyone.
I wanted to share with you just how hopeless Sony support is, especially the branches in Poland. I purchased the 75X95L along with the HT-A7000. It was one of my modest dreams which I managed to achieve by saving up a bit.
After buying the TV and connecting it with the soundbar, I noticed that a hissing noise randomly emanates from the speakers for an indeterminate moment. I browsed various forums and quickly realized that this issue is known globally. After trying to eliminate the squealing using power strips, high-quality cables, updating software, and many other tricks described on the forum, I decided to get it repaired. The TV was taken to an authorized Sony center where they acknowledged the fault and replaced the main board. Unfortunately, this didn't help. When I lodged the complaint again, I was informed that this time everything was in order - the service tested it with the HT-A3000 soundbar and advised me to buy high-quality cables. Completely two different worlds - one time blindly replacing the main board and another time asserting that everything was fine. After contacting the service, I heard that they have specific diagnostic procedures and cannot follow and try to diagnose the TV according to the scenario provided by the consumer.
Below is a video showing the squealing of my unit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaoaBKiCXX0
Has the motherboard replacement not helped any of the readers like me? I don't know what to do next, further complaints seem pointless, but I'm trying as hard as I can for SONY to finally take the matter seriously...

2024.05.14 15:01 sidusnare [Talk] This film festival spotlights efforts to preserve and discover lost movies

https://www.npr.org/2024/05/13/1251040886/this-film-festival-spotlights-efforts-to-preserve-and-discover-lost-movies
The Restored and Rediscovered film festival begins Monday at the Jacob Burns Film Festival in New York City. It's meant to put a spotlight on movies that have been since lost.
AILSA CHANG, HOST:
Nearly half of all movies made before 1950 have been lost, according to some estimates. That's why film historians and archivists are racing to preserve older movies. The Restored and Rediscovered Film Festival spotlights these efforts, and it kicks off today at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, N.Y. One of the festival's offerings is this rarely seen 1971 film, "Bushman." It's about the racial politics of 1960s America as seen through the eyes of a Nigerian immigrant.
(SOUNDBITE OF FILM, "BUSHMAN")
UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #1: (As character) Man, I can't get used to these strange Black people in the world (ph).
UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #2: (As character) I'm Blacker than you are.
CHANG: Senior film programmer and critic Monica Castillo is here to tell us more. Welcome.
MONICA CASTILLO: Thank you for having me.
CHANG: Well, thanks for being with us. So can we start with that film, "Bushman"? Like, I've heard it described as half drama, half documentary. What was this film about exactly?
CASTILLO: It's a really interesting film that blends narrative nonfiction and fiction. You're following a Nigerian exchange student as he kind of explores identity, ideas of home and belonging in counterculture San Francisco in the late 1960s. And he even embraces the name Bushman as well. You know, and his different questioning and answers throughout the different characters that he meets.
But then all of a sudden, the movie comes to a screeching halt. And then somebody else comes in front of the frame and tells you that the actor playing the main character was arrested on his own college campus and deported. So then that's when the documentary aspect really comes in. And it's a talking point for the way that Black students are treated, the way that immigrants are treated. It's a really remarkable film.
CHANG: So interesting.
CASTILLO: Yeah.
CHANG: Well, I do want to talk about the work involved in bringing a film like "Bushman" to audiences on the big screen. Like, what does it take to restore a film? What do archivists have to do to resurrect some of these films, exactly?
CASTILLO: Yeah. So it really depends on the film itself and what condition it's in. There's usually a scanning process, digitizing it. And then once it's in a computer, they can fix the imperfections, whether that be mold or color degradation or scratches. And then through that process, we're able to get another copy on the other end. So that's what we're able to show.
CHANG: What's fascinating about this for me is when I think of restored films, I think of, like, the old silent films or the early talkies. But we're talking about films that are much more modern. Like, I know one of the films you're showing is the 1960 British horror thriller "Peeping Tom."
(SOUNDBITE OF FILM, "PEEPING TOM")
UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #3: (As character) Whatever I photograph, I always lose.
(SCREAMING)
CHANG: Which I understand that critics hated when the movie came out. So tell me why you decided to showcase that movie here.
CASTILLO: Absolutely. And they sure did hate it at that time. But...
CHANG: And why? What was so awful about this movie?
CASTILLO: It was controversial in the way that it depicted violence. And it sort of equated, you know, movie making with a sense of warriorism. I mean, that's very much what it's playing with, but maybe it was a little too ahead of its time. So even though it came out about the same time that "Psycho" did, you know, Alfred Hitchcock was celebrated, and Michael Powell had to deal with the sort of career fallout with all of these negative reviews over "Peeping Tom." But now with this new restoration, I mean, you get to really appreciate the amount of texture and color work that he's working with. Like, he really immerses you in the main character's sort of mania, and it's really fascinating.
CHANG: So what do you ultimately hope that people will take away from watching these films years and years later?
CASTILLO: I really just hope that they keep an eye out for these restorations. They are so special, and you get to see so much more. I was just thinking of the Iranian New Wave film "The Runner," which we have in our series. Before, I had seen a sort of VHS scan copy off of YouTube, and you lost so much of the story.
CHANG: Yeah.
CASTILLO: And then now with this restoration, there's whole pieces of the story that now come together. And you feel this character's journey in a such more emotional and visceral way. That's part of the movie magic.
CHANG: That is Monica Castillo, senior film programmer at the Jacob Burns Film Center. And if you aren't able to make it to the festival in Pleasantville, many of these restorations will be available to stream or to buy. Thank you so much, Monica. Thank you for having me.

2024.05.14 14:58 ASzT_Presents Who is my academic advisor and how do I book an appointment

I’m an international student and will commence my study in computer science on semester 2 of 2024.
I’m a bit overwhelmed by what exact course I need to enroll and would need some degree of assistance. So I looked into how to book an appointment with an academic advisor and the only solution I found is to email them, to which i believe there are only three person in this position (?), and it’s all on-site (??). https://eecs.uq.edu.au/current-students/academic-advice/bachelor-computer-science
And, through the international student support site, booking an appointment with student advisor doesn't work because it's only for staff member (???) https://studenthub.uq.edu.au/form.aspx?id=3744145
Did I misunderstand anything or is this the only way to reach out to my advisor since all other unis seems to have an advisor assigned to the student beforehand and have everything sorted out step by step.

Case approved. Married to USC. We’re both transgender.
Hello! I’ve been a lurker on this subreddit for a while, and have found this to be an incredible resource. We just got our case approved recently so I wanted to join in and share some of insights as well.
Specifically for transgender people as well. As, the information out there pertaining to queer petitioners is very sparse.
  1. Gender related takeaways
In the past few years I’ve used three names and the submitted evidence reflected this discrepancy. Not to mention the difference in pronouns in different documents. After speaking to a lawyer, I attached a notarized letter to my application explaining that I’m transgender and the difference is names, and pronouns used by different people.
I also attached two physicians letters confirming my transition.
I also changed my gender with social security and my drivers license before submitting my application (I’m in NY, so relatively easy). My home country doesn’t let you officially change your gender, so that could not be updated.
  1. Overall takeaways
We prepared and submitted our application ourselves. But we did get help from a lawyer on two occasions.
First, I booked a consult with an immigration lawyer ($300) before I started my application. That was great because she was able to answer some questions I had specific to my case.
Secondly, we took advantage of a local non-profits application review services. We took our completed application to her and she gave everything a look-over for free. This was super helpful, as she pointed out mistakes that we would not have known about otherwise.
We were also extremely well-organized in our preparation. We tried to follow USCIS’s guidelines to a T.
https://www.uscis.gov/forms/filing-guidance/tips-for-filing-forms-by-mail
We did pretty much everything listed on here, including the two hole punches and the sticky tabs. I like to believe this is partially why our case was adjudicated so fast.
Finally, I believe the best thing I did throughout this process is try to think abt it as little as possible once we put in the application. I didn’t check the case tracker or the USCIS site unless I got a notification, and I focused on other things in my life. In fact, our I-485 was approved 4 days ago and I just learned abt it today 💀.
I’ve attached photos of my timelines with this post for reference. If anyone has any questions for me, especially queer people going through this process, please feel free to ask! And I will do my best to help you any way I can!

2024.05.14 14:53 bvanevery violence vs. peace

violence vs. peace
I played a real life game all winter of trying to stop squirrels from eating peanuts at my homemade bird feeder. I made all kinds of wooden devices, none of which stopped them. In fairness, some were only designed to slow them down.

flying squid and bird defenders
The aesthetically successful contraptions had organic forms, like flowers or animals. Squirrels would typically crawl through them or make mighty running leaps over them. So it becomes a system of organic competition. If this is a game though, it's, uh, not very balanced yet...
Today I thought about trying to commit these kinds of shapes to a digital reality, and making some kind of 4X game out of them. I imagined mighty whirling wheels of blades slicing each other up. The neighbors did joke / ask about whether some of my contraptions were meant to chop squirrels into little tiny bits. In this regard they might recall the venerable Lemmings). Although, I really imagined the squirrels retaining an "other channel" aspect where they are totally immune and invulnerable to the machinations of the creatures, just leaping heroically over them like some kind of animal gods in a mechanical world.
So I have a kind of war, and it's not the 1st time I've imagined a war occurring on small scale real life terrain. I've often thought of insects, particularly ants, fighting over some piece of a garden or side of a deck. Or plastic soldiers fighting over a bed or a rumpled blanket. That kind of idea got made into at least one movie awhile ago, called Small Soldiers. For some reason I keep thinking there was something else along those lines though. Arguably, any of those Pixar-ish films have factions going at each other at some point.
I don't know what the point of any of this is though. Violence for violence's sake? Aesthetics of destruction and mayhem? I can make a game with objectives, "Secure these objectives." But so what?
Is peace ever important in games? Violence is the easiest simulation crutch ever. Especially for First Person Shooters, which computer UIs have an easy time simulating the basics of.
Am I just a habitual warmonger who doesn't care about stuff proximate to "cozy" games? I've generally found the idea semi-repulsive and not very gamelike. More proximate to a life sim, construction toy box, or art kit.
