Thank you to the stranger who helped fix my truck wheel downtown!

2024.05.14 02:24 ironcladfolly Thank you to the stranger who helped fix my truck wheel downtown!

After leaving work today, my vehicle started making a horrible metallic squealing sound. I pulled to the side of the road on one of the downtown side streets and tried to figure out what was wrong.
I am not at all inclined toward auto maintenance, but a random person walking by stopped to help. He and his partner looked like they were dressed up for a nice night out, but he still reached into the filthy wheel well of my truck and was able to immediately identify and help fix the problem. Saved me an expensive and stressful trip to the shop quick a quick and easy solution — turns out it was just a chunk of gravel that had gotten jammed in the brake calliper and needed to be dislodged.
This dude had the vibe of someone who maybe reads Edmonton; if this is you, kind stranger, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to help! Edmonton's still got some pretty good and selfless people 🙏

2024.05.10 20:22 ispy98 Does anybody here use Amazon Relay

We have a Canadian-based trucking company operating close to Vancouver, British Columbia and have been having issues using Amazon Relay to find loads using the 'load board' feature. We are looking for routes from B.C to Calgary/Edmonton and vice-versa, and primarily dry vans/reefers. Nothing appears when searching for loads, and wondering if anyone here has a resolution. We are fully registered, and have yet to find a load, not sure if doing something wrong

Five people attacked by pits. Edmonton, Alberta. May 9th
“Five people were attacked by two pit bulls in Meadowlark Park Thursday afternoon, according to police.
The attacks were reported around 3:15 p.m. Police say the dogs were reportedly loose in the area when they bit two teens and three adults.
Lorena Barkwell lives in the area. She said she saw the dogs chase the two youths into the back of a truck parked on the street, and she was bitten on the leg when she tried to help calm the dogs down.
Afterward, the dogs attacked another couple walking across the street, she said. All but one adult were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. "I have to go to the hospital and get a tetanus shot and get checked out, because my bite is swelling up already," she said.
Police said the dogs were seized by City of Edmonton bylaw officials.
CTV News Edmonton has reached out to city officials and is awaiting a response.”

2024.05.04 21:17 Cabbageismyname The History and Proliferation of the Edmonton Green Onion Cake?

I've always wanted more information on the timeline of the Edmonton green onion cake, and so I'm hoping someone out there might be able to provide insights.
Here's what I know already:
Here's what I would like to know:
Bonus trivia:
Lesser known about Siu To is that he also brought real Montreal Bagels to Edmonton (for a while). Apparently he was trained as a bagel maker in Montreal, at either Fairmont or St. Vaiteur (can't remember which). He would make bagels once a week out of his restaurant, The Mongolian Food Experience (now Original Joe's) in Glenora.
I have vivid childhood memories of my parents sending me to buy a dozen bagels on Saturday mornings. I'd walk in the back door of the restaurant, straight into the kitchen, where he'd be pumping out bagels from his wood burning, brick oven. He was cooking them on long wooden planks and tossing them down a big shute, just as they do in Montreal. I'd get a bag still piping hot from the oven and munch on one while I walked home. Since then, I've had very high standards for bagels.

2024.05.01 06:37 Valuable_Pianist_943 Moving help from Kitchener to Edmonton

I am planning to move to Edmonton from kitchener in a couple of months and was thinking about the options. I have a 2010 Nissan rogue but I can't drive it in it's current condition. I have stuff less than a studio apartment. I went to uhaul website and the best option it provided was to rent their 10' box truck with a tow for my car. The rental cost itself is 2500 apart from insurance and gas. Another option that I was thinking of was to rather invest my money on the car to install a hitch and rent a 4'x8' uhaul trailer. But right now I am not sure how much will it take to install the hitch on my old car and other expenses to get my car ready for such a long haul. Is there any other rental company which can provide a truck and tow my car for lesser cost? Any leads or help will be appreciated

2024.04.30 15:20 As3fthjkl saw someone else post thier camping set up and felt the need to post mine

JUST got back from a camping trip and here are some photos of our Taco. first photo was the most remote being 2 hours north of hinton on some logging roads and the second photo was at a federal campsite in Jasper so unfortunately a bit more pavement princess.
we are looking to find more overland sites and have a 2 week expedition being planned to head from Edmonton to Tuktoyaktuk in NWT next year so I'm hoping to have better photos for then.
tent was so heavy we had to replace the stock leaves with with Icon Add a Leaf and now she is always raised and ready to go. new leaves hold and additional 500kg and we packed her full thus trip with roughly 500kg of things (including ourselves when sleeping in tent) and even then she was still raised like she was taunting us saying "really? I can carry more"
love this truck man

2024.04.19 17:30 roger_plus 148 wildfires extinguished in Alberta in 2024 so far, 50 still burning.

The 2024 wildfire season in Alberta is expected to be highly active due to a combination of factors. The province has been warned of extreme danger by Alberta Wildfire, largely due to an unprecedented number of wildfires from 2023 that have continued to burn and smoulder underground. As temperatures rise and snow melts, exposing dry vegetation, heightened fire activity is anticipated.
There are 50 wildfires currently burning in Alberta, with four being held and the rest under control. The fires being held are in remote areas, not near communities or highways.
From the start of 2024, there were still 64 wildfires from last year, and more than 500 hectares have burned since January. This is about 400 hectares more than the same time last year.
Water availability is a concern this year due to the warmer winter and frozen lakes. Therefore, water contracts are being worked on to ensure water can be trucked in for firefighting.
Most of the wildfires are caused by humans, often unintentionally. Measures like early wildfire season start, fire restrictions, and fire advisories are being used to reduce the risk.
In addition to regular staff, Alberta has hired additional wildland firefighters, fire attack firefighters, and seasonal support staff. Municipalities have also requested additional wildfire training.

2024.04.19 16:23 globalflashback Seeking Advice on Launching Oil and Gas Career: Canada vs. USA

Hello, fellow Redditors! I'm currently in Australia, where I've been working as a heavy equipment operator in mining and drilling. Now, I'm looking to transition my career into the oil and gas industry. I hold an American passport and have a one-year visa for Canada, where I could work for a year.
Here's where I need your advice: should I head to Alberta for a year, aiming to kickstart my career there, possibly in fracking? Alternatively, should I consider Texas or North Dakota for long-term planning? I have an Australian HRB truck license, which I've heard might be valid in Alberta, but I'm not sure about its recognition in the USA where I might need a CDL license.
Specifically, how challenging would it be to establish myself in fracking in places like Edmonton with a work visa? Are there opportunities for someone with my background and credentials, or would I be better off aiming for Texas or North Dakota?
I'm torn between the prospects in Canada and the USA, so any insights, experiences, or advice you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Would you pay $100K CAD (Canadian) after taxes for a low KM BMW 1M?
Seems kinda overpriced in my opinion. There’s a lot of better BMW options out there for this asking price. Although it’s an amazing car and rare to see, I don’t know if justifies paying $100K for it.

2024.04.17 02:23 JeffSC94 First RV for family of 6

This past winter we rented a 32ft Class C for a week and camped at various sites around southern NV, CA and AZ. Some sites had hookups and others had none. We put on about 700 miles during our trip. Our whole family absolutely loved the experience!
We have 4 children, ages 10, 8, 4 & 3. My wife and I can both work remotely most of the time. We typically rent a cabin a couple times every summer, go tent camping, and spend lots of days at State Parks. We'd be using the RV for a lot of 3-4 day weekends and maybe a couple of week long trips every year. We live in MN, so most areas around us are pretty flat but cold weather is a definite factor.
I think an RV makes a ton of sense for us. I'm just not totally sure what we want. We don't have a big truck to tow a trailer. We have a Ford Flex and a couple of smaller cars. A Suburban or Expedition is +$30k plus cost of a trailer and that's just not in the budget right now.
Our budget is $25,000. We don't want to be cramped so I think we want 30ft or longer with slide outs. We need sleeping and seatbelts for a minimum of 6 people. Class C's seem to have an advantage in sleeping spaces with the front overhead bunk. Class A's seem to have more storage.
I've been watching Craigslist and RV Trader for about a month now and there are always a dozen-ish listings within our budget that look to meet our needs. They're usually years 2000-2008, and most are class A.
We can park it at home and have enough space. I'm used to driving big vehicles and towing (used to drive semi), so the size or style (A or C) isn't a concern in that regard.
What should I be looking closely at? What are some mistakes others have made that I can learn from? I know our budget is a limiting factor. Depending on how much we actually use our first RV and what our experience is like, we would likely replace it in a couple years with a newer one.
Thanks in advance
