2024.05.11 04:38 Future_Ad_3485 Cold Case Inc. Part One: Time Meets Tarot!
Sprinting through the cobblestone streets, the pitchforks and flaming torches had me skidding into a nearby wooden home. Sliding down the wall, silent tears splashed onto the worn colonial gown I wore. Cupping my side, ruby poured from my stab wounds. Glancing to the left of me, a male form faded in and out. The word witch echoed down the alley, the handsome man crouched down to my level. Tucking a piece of hair behind my ear, his silver eyes blurred through my tears. Who the hell was he?
“How about we make a deal and you work with me?” He offered sincerely, my life force pouring out of my body. “Allow me to make you my mate and you get to live as long as me.” Resting my head against the wall, every one of my breaths grew shorter. Choking out a quick no, a hiss poured from his lips. Apparently, he thought he was fucking Casanova.
“I am not forcing a romance.” He growled through gritted teeth, his eyes rolling. “I need your powers to bring my dream to life.” Rolling my head over to face him, his thumb wiped away the ruby dribbling down my chin. Laughing weakly, his brow cocked.
“Now why would a freak like you want my time travel spells?” I chuckled between wheezes, his hands cupping my face. “I have lived way too long to enjoy my rewards. Do you know how many times I have almost been burned at the stake or nearly gotten hung?” Pressing his lips into a thin line, a slap to my cheek woke me up enough for his face to come into focus. A worn leather jacket floated around his ankles, his wild navy eyes coming into better focus. Scarlet painted my cheeks at his handsome features, his fangs growing his inky lips. Did he really think that was going to work with me?
“What if I told you that I want to solve forgotten crimes but right after they happen?” He sold with a crooked grin, my tears slowing to stop. “Let’s change time and catch those killers that are unknown. Don’t you want to bring closure to the victims' family?” His offer sounded like a goddamn pipe dream, hesitation lingering in my eyes. Huffing out a fine, his weight on my lap felt warm. Sinking his fangs into my tender flesh, an inky flame tattoo curled around my neck. A clap had a bright light snapping me awake.
Sucking in a deep breath, Marcos Smithson’s wild navy waves bounced with the wave of his hand. An old newspaper article fluttered in his palm, excitement twinkling in his eyes. Yawning groggily, the sleeve of his usual leather jacket brushed against my cheek. Pushing away my feelings for him, he didn’t need to know. Then again murderous thoughts were tainting my feelings, his endless bounty of energy getting on my nerves. That was what you got when you put a black cat energy with a golden retriever energy.
“We have a new murder to solve, my dear Gearz!” He announced while climbing on top of my lap, a tender blush rising to my cheeks. “I have your dress ready on the door. Do you require my help?” Massaging my forehead, Marcus could be a damn child. Pushing him off of me, my exhausted eyes soaking in the bland walls of our apartment. If only we had a bit more cash to get us out of this dump. Sitting up, a Victorian gown waited for me, Marcus holding up a Victorian buttoning tool. Dropping my oversized t-shirt onto the worn wooden floor, his hands pulling a corset around my waist. Tugging until it hugged my hourglass figure, he turned his back the moment I dropped a high necked cotton blouse over my head. Dropping a skirt over the blouse, the cotton material tucked in perfectly. Marcus darted behind me, his nimble hands twisting my dark brown waves into a time appropriate bun. Sliding my feet into a pair of boots, the floor groaning as he laced up my boots. Pulling on a matching scarlet jacket, the skirt floated around my ankles. Plucking my violet pendant from the dresser by the door, Marcus took my side with his silver spiked club. Shrinking it down to his charm, he whispered the words Rye Beach into my ear. Snapping his fingers, his leather jacket was replaced with a typical black Victorian suit. Dropping a matching top hat onto his head, his fingers traced the golden swirls on his vest. Spinning my pendant around clockwise, his eager eyes never left me.
“I call upon the sands of time to whisk me back to Rye Beach on the balmy day of July fourth of the year 1820.” I chanted with another yawn, the spinning growing faster. A blast of energy knocked us onto the damp sand of Rye beach, the hustle and bustle of the fourth of July roared to life. Dropping my pendant over my head, Marcus tucked it underneath my blouse. Fishing around his pocket, two golden bands shimmered in my palm. Sliding the smaller one onto my ring finger, he slipped on his own. Averting my gaze to the sand, every cell in my body wanted the union to be real. Fighting back tears, memories of my abusive father flashed in my head. Shattered glass glistened on the floor, ruby dotting the smaller shards. Images of my murdered mother haunted my mind, my three year old self couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
“Are you okay?” Marcus inquired with honest concern, his voice whipping me back into reality. Marcus didn’t know about my past and my father’s crime, the lack of a desire to inform him of it all kept my mouth shut. Waving away his concern, he pressed the article in my palm. The body wouldn’t be discovered for three days, my copper eyes taking in the dark haired woman with light green eyes. The sand crunched as I rose to my feet, Marcus popping up behind me. A snooty man approached us, his haughtiness had me shrinking back. His cold beady eyes looked me up and down, his short muscular body reeking of murder. Shoving the article into Marcus’ jacket pocket, he stepped in front of me. This guy certainly had my alarm bells going off.
“What are a couple of foozlers doing at this beach? Is it a honeymoon?” He asked with a false smile, his grating accent pissing me off. “Did I strike a nerve?” Noting the blood on his hands, I made a mental note. Counting several dots of ruby stained his cuff, a sly grin dancing across my lips.
“Do you think of me as a daft lass!” I barked back, Marcus holding me back. Apologizing with a half-smirk, the guy didn’t buy the excuse. Stumbling closer to us, my fingers slid into the man’s pocket. Swiping his key, evidence had to be found to plant his ass in jail. Replacing it with a magical copy, the feeling should satisfy him. Watching him stumble away, Marcus plucked his pin from his boot. Flicking it into his neck, his hand rested on my shoulder. Did he have to be so flirty?
“Shall we enjoy the festivities?” He suggested with his million dollar smile, a deep crimson coloring my cheeks. “What has your knickers in a twist? I thought we could follow him tonight to the body to see what he does and then hit his home after he leaves his home for whatever reason. Sounds like a plan?” Nodding once, tears welled up in my eyes. My father took us to Rye Beach to ditch us to meet his mistress and drink like a fish on his company’s dime, the beach holding a darker meaning. Following him around town, his real smile never left his face. The way his left side hung higher than the right had my heart fluttering away, his adoration of treating me made me thankful for our partnership. The sea of nice homes were a far cry from the ones I had grown up seeing, the historic ones looking a million times better. Excusing myself to gather my fraying nerves, silent tears stained my cheeks. A hand yanked me into the shadows, a blunt object sinking me into the deep darkness.
Groaning awake, a loud fuck burst from my lips at the chains tying me to a giant wooden x. Taking in the wet granite around me, the smell of mold had my nose scrunching up in disgust. Shuddering at the memory of being buried alive that one time, a lantern came into view. The beady eyed freak came into view, a fit of laughter bursting from my lips. Too pissed to be scared, he didn't know what was coming his way. Hell, he would be lucky if I was the one he was dealing with.
“Seriously. You should let me go before you call my friend.” I warned with a defiant grin, bewilderment twisting his features. “You know, my husband.” Huffing under his breath, a rusty scalpel spun in his palm. Grimacing to myself, tetanus would kill me if my lifeline wasn’t tied to Marcus. Hovering it over my stomach, his eager expression waited for any sign of fear. Shaking my head, the fright wouldn’t come. Fury replaced the normal response, his fist slamming the x holding me. Someone seemed to have a crappy attitude, my tactics working on dismantling his composure.
“Why doesn't the fright claim you?” He roared thunderously, another fit of laughter exploding from my lips. “What makes your laughter flow in such a manner?” Pressing the scalpel to my throat, my confidence swelled in the tainted silence, a thud causing him to drop his scalpel. Gripping my throat with his hand, fury mixed with terror at doors getting kicked open. Good luck with the hell coming your way!
“Who is that? Spit it out!” He demanded with a tremble in his voice, light flooding into the basement. Grinning wider, the steps creaked in protest with every deliberate stomp. Dust flew into the air, the clouds mixing in the darkness sticking to his side. Marcus bent down to reveal his face, the killer scrambling to leave. Wagging his finger, a devilish grin illuminated his features. Marcus had a passion for playing with his targets, the true fun for him coming from such a simple pleasure.
“Where do you think you are going?” He teased with a sinister wink, clicking his tongue a couple of times. “I am going to drag you to the police station where you are going to admit your crimes. The nice guy is gone. How dare you steal my mate!” Gliding down the railing, he danced up to him. Lifting him off the ground by his throat, a new map fluttered in his palm. Pinning him to the wall, the rotten bastard clawed at his hand. Staring deep into his eyes, his truth spell took hold. Setting him down, the killer took the map. Offering him a quill and ink, the monster proceeded to mark thirteen x’s.
“What are you going to do now?” Marcus inquired with another devilish grin, the monster heading for the stairs. “Tell me the truth which is something you must suffer with for the rest of your life. Enjoy the truth curse.” Chaos erupted upstairs, the footfalls of policemen thundered over us. Undoing my chains, scarlet painted our cheeks the moment I fell into his arms. Silver ribbons whisked us away, the sand crunching underneath his boots. The stars twinkled in the sky, a gasp pouring from my lips. Rewards could be found in the shadows, one simply had to look.
“Too bad they aren’t as beautiful as you.” He mumbled under his breath, panic twisting his features immediately. Setting me down, we turned away from each other. Playing with my hair, he didn’t deserve my extra baggage. No one deserved that .
“I didn’t hear that if you didn’t want me to.” I choked out through an abrupt wall of tears, my hand cupping my mouth. “You wouldn’t think that I am so beautiful if you knew where I came from.” Spinning me around to face him, his finger lifted up my chin. Smiling down at me with his natural smile, true love glittered in his eyes. Stop trying to be a damn Casanova.
“Does it matter? No, it doesn’t. Do you know how long I have liked you? The first few years we worked together, I thought of you as a friend. As the years passed, I found myself fancying you.” He blurted out adorably, his hand dropping to his side. Standing on my tippy toes, my hands cupped his face. Kissing his lips tenderly, time stopped. The sounds died down, our hearts beating to the same drum. Releasing him from my spell, a deeper scarlet painted our cheeks. A lump formed in my throat, both of us taking a step back. Seconds from apologizing, fireworks illuminated the sky the moment he kissed me back passionately. Swinging me underneath him, cheers erupted behind us. The blasts of the fireworks faded out for our ears to single out our heartbeats. Swinging me back up, his hand lingered on my cheek. Stealing him away to the shadowy part of the beach. Shoot, it was time to go home before we stood out any longer.
“I call upon the sands of time to whisk me back home and to set this timeline in place.” I chanted with a quiet smile, my fingers lifting my pendant over my neck. Spinning it counterclockwise, a blast of energy threw us back into my apartment. Tarot cards fluttered around the room, my eager palm catching the card of death. The couch groaned behind us, a quick glare behind me revealed a slender demon with wild ivory hair that hung over his left eye bit into one of my apples. Spinning around to face him completely, his Gothic suit glittered with rubies. Spinning another tarot card in his other hand, a playful grin had his lips curling ear to ear. Noting his dual colored eyes, the right one was a deep ocean blue. His left ruby eye followed the silver ribbons approaching him. Shooting daggers from my eyes in his direction, his presence had me chewing on my lip. Chomping on the apple until the core remained, a flick of the wrist sending it clattering into the bottom of the trash can.
“Tarot is my name and reading your souls is my game.” He introduced himself with a hearty chuckle, the card stopping in his fingers. “I have an offer for you. How about you join my team in stopping a psychopathic witch who wishes to undo every known serial killers’ sentences? We can’t have people like Jeffrey Dahmer running around.” Leaning back, our lack of an answer irritated him. Huffing in disbelief, he flicked the card in my direction. Catching it in between my fingers, the couch groaned as he leaned forward. How the hell could he be so irritating!
“Don’t answer or anything.” He grumbled loud enough for us to hear, his fingers snapping in a moment of realization. “You can solve your little murders in between the jobs and you get a chance to not live in this dump.” Marcus growled behind me, his charm expanding to his club. Holding his hand down, an opportunity could be had here.
“Where do you live because I happen to like my little dump!” I retorted bitterly, making sure he noticed my icy attitude. “We are doing just fine without your little cl-” His leaping down in front of me had me pausing, a contract floating into his palm. Bending down in front of us, Marcus snatched if from his hand. Floating upside down, his face was inches from mine. The last thing I needed was another childlike man in my life.
“I would make you my mate if I had the chance.” He mused with a hearty chuckle, Marcus grabbing his throat. “I get it. What is yours is yours. Strange that you would pick a witch to be your mate.” Summoning a raven feather quill and a pot of ink, they hovered in front of Marcus’ face. Dipping the tip into the ink well, the tip danced across the line. Passing me the contract, I had to trust his decision. Dipping the tip back into the ink well, the tip glided across the line. Waiting for something to happen, the contract rolled into a flurry of tarot card. Watching the ink well and quill float back into his palms, two tarot cards with our flawless images appeared in our pockets. More tricks! Couldn't a single thing be straight forward!
“Thank you for your help. Those are your work ID’s and your key into your room. I hope you don’t mind sharing.” He sang with a sway of his hips, his cards whisking us into a dusty bedroom. Floating out of the room, awkward silence hung between us. Leaning out the window, this was a new dimension entirely. Following the ruby marble twisting into the sky, three blood red moons blinded me. Covering my eyes, diamonds twinkled in the inky sea of black. Marcus pulled me back in, his arms snaking around my waist. Why did he feel so warm?
“Can I have your shirt? We left without any of my t-shirts.” I asked shyly, hating the outfit I was in. Squirming out of his embrace, a couple of tugs had my waves cascading down my back. Lifting my skirt over my head, the blouse bounced free. Peeling off his jacket, his nimble fingers worked the buttons. Undoing my corset, the freedom felt like Heaven. Dropping his shirt over my head, the floor groaned as he got his knees with his contraption. Taking off my boots in seconds, the cool floor against my feet felt like another slice of Heaven. Why must I be so odd?
“Not to be a Debby downer but you signed that contract in a second. May I inquire as to why?” I queried with a tired smile, dropping my pendant over my head. His loving gaze lingered on me, mixed emotions flashed in his eyes. Settling on an expression between annoyance and compliance, his mind being a mystery to me.
“His old man told me to watch him a few centuries back. When he showed up, my side of the deal had to be kept.” He explained with his hands on his hips, a tender blush rising to my cheeks at the sight of his bare chest. “Take a picture, it will last longer.” Sticking my tongue out in his direction, a middle finger met his remark. Even if we agreed to try to be a couple, he didn't have to engage in such silly banter.
“Then I will take care of him too. Besides, our bond makes it impossible to be apart.” I joked with one of trademark crooked grins, one yank had me buried in his chest. A musky scent had me melting into a puddle, his chin resting on the top of my head. Playing with my hair like he always did, his actions in the past made sense. All he had to do was ask for us to be together and I would have said yes.
“For crying out loud, you don’t have to worry about it.” He returned sweetly, walking me over to the bed. “The one downside is that we will be worked like dogs. Working with you makes it all worth it in my eyes.” Hiding my blush by snuggling my head into his shoulder, something good had to come of this. A reward could be reaped, right?

Toughts of the season:
Probably my favorite season of all. There are so many crazy moments in this season and so many players ready to win. I think Jill and Caprice are one of the best this season and the winner isn't far behind either, Jimmy played a very under the radar game and still managed to win by his own merit. This season had everything to be predictable but it was the opposite. The alliance of women breaking up and being eliminated one by one at the merge is simply hilarious - sad, but hilarious -. I think we lost some great characters in the pre-merge who deserved a second chance, so I'll leave an open invitation for the specific people of this season.
My favorites:
Jimmy, Jill, Caprice, Helen, Louis and Lola Second chance:
Millard, Turabi, Vince, Alfie, Betsy and Tiffani What u guys think? See you on Tocantins!

- Visit Tallahassee (old Amtrak Station): Understanding the LGBTQ History of Tallahassee. What would a queer history of Tallahassee look like? What are the most important developments in the writing of queer and LGBT history, and how can they be applied to interpreting the queer experience in Tallahassee over the past 200 years? One of the first academic authors of gay and lesbian history earned his PhD at Florida State in the early 1970s and taught some of the first university courses on LGBT history and culture in the nation on the Florida State campus. Why isn’t this story better known, and how can we build on this legacy? How can theory help ensure that we write histories that acknowledge the centrality of race, class, gender, and gender identity, while also always foregrounding issues of political power, labor, coercion, and class? Theory is not about making what is simple obscure, but instead about helping us to see mechanisms at work, and lives lived, that may have left only faint traces in the archive, rounding out and completing the evidence that has survived in greater abundance. Join Professor Charles Upchurch, Professor of British & LGBTQ History at Florida State University, for a 40-minute illustrated exploration of all of these themes as they relate to Tallahassee’s queer history. 5pm/free

This early spring bloom, commonly known as creeping phlox or moss phlox, also bears the charming name "moss pink." Visitors can enjoy an after-hours self-guided tour of the Keeper’s House Museum and see the exhibit for the lighthouse’s original, historic Fresnel lens constructed in 1894 in Paris, France. Guests can browse the unique nautical gifts and souvenirs in the gift shop. Visitors may also enjoy the glowing bonfire in the park (weather permitting). Bring a chair and enjoy the evening. For those brave souls who are bold enough to venture to the top of the tallest lighthouse on the Forgotten Coast, evening tower climbs are scheduled at 15-minute intervals throughout the event. Climbers will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the bay. Evening climbs cost $10 and climb reservations are encouraged due to limited availability. Climbers must be at least 44 inches tall and children under 12 (FREE) with ticketed adults. 2024.04.15 21:22 jefrye Recommending books based on “folklore”
| [Reposting because formatting issues, and the images mean I can't make edits...sorry mods!] Hi everyone! Reading is my main hobby, and in anticipation of “The Tortured Poets Department,” I wanted to share a list of (spoiler-free) book recommendations based on my favorite albums of all time by any artist: folklore and evermore. (This got long so evermore will be a separate post.) Both albums just feel very literary to me (probably a big reason why I love them so much), and even on first listen immediately reminded me of some of my favorite books. Since then, it’s been impossible not to make more connections with what I’ve been reading. I thought it would be fun to put together a list with recommendations for every track, and here it is! I tried to pick only books that I absolutely adore, so most of these are all-time favorites—but I also really wanted to go with books that felt like they matched the tracks, so a few less-than-favorites slipped through (though none that I actively dislike, except as honorable mentions). I picked books not necessarily because they match the exact “plot” of a given song, but because they might resonate with a lyric, or a theme, or the overall ~vibe~. For each one, I picked out a lyric that matches well, and then I also have a “similarities” section to explain what I think they have in common. In a few cases, the recommendations are literally perfect plot-wise, but I won’t tell you if it gives away a twist (I hate spoilers so I’m keeping this spoiler-free! I’m also not listing trigger warnings, in part because they can be spoiler-y, but mostly because I don’t remember everything that happens in each of these books well enough to ensure that I’m being thorough.). I’d love to hear if any other readers have recommendations of their own! Or, if you’ve read any of these, I’d be curious to know if you agree with my track pairing :) the 1 In my defense, I have none / For never leaving well enough alone https://preview.redd.it/b9cfekqg1puc1.jpg?width=286&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=580ec7b9115f6e8a75f4b675c51f4a941100fa3e Recommendation: Excellent Women by Barbara Pym Mildred Lathbury is one of those ‘excellent women’ who is often taken for granted. She is a godsend, ‘capable of dealing with most of the stock situations of life – birth, marriage, death, the successful jumble sales, the garden fete spoilt by bad weather’. As such, she often gets herself embroiled in other people’s lives – especially those of her glamorous new neighbours, the Napiers, whose marriage seems to be on the rocks. One cannot take sides in these matters, though it is tricky, especially as Mildred, teetering on the edge of spinsterhood, has a soft spot for dashing young Rockingham Napier. This is Barbara Pym’s world at its funniest and most touching. Similarities: Contemporary, upbeat, undercurrents of melancholy, themes of self-acceptance and quiet contentment Review: Very funny and a little sad, a bit like if Jane Austen wrote about a 30-something spinster who resigned herself to never marrying and was instead involved in everyone else’s business. Character-focused without much of a plot, but who needs a plot when you have an author like Pym. Honorable mention(s): - Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman: Been saying ‘yes’ instead of ‘no.’ … Upbeat, quirky novel that is probably a slightly better fit, but I just like Pym more.
cardigan You put me on and said I was your favorite https://preview.redd.it/atytz16h1puc1.jpg?width=292&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fdf5fcde5c547ff910a31c010cd52819d285f451 Recommendation: Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert (translated by Adam Thorpe) Emma Bovary is an avid reader of sentimental novels; brought up on a Normandy farm and convent-educated, she longs for the passion of romance. At first, Emma pins her hopes on marriage, but life with her well-meaning husband in the provinces leaves her bored and dissatisfied. She seeks escape through extravagant spending sprees and, eventually, adultery. As Emma pursues her impossible reverie she seals her own ruin and despair. Exquisite, moving, at times ferociously satirical and always psychologically acute, Madame Bovary remains one of the greatest, most beguiling novels ever written. Similarities: Whirling/spinning feeling, romantic, cozy, autumnal, dark, the eponymous Madame Bovary would absolutely identify with all the lyrics Review: Some of the most beautiful writing I’ve ever read: it feels cinematic, dreamlike, decadent, opulent, glamorous, gilded…in short, everything that Emma wants her life to be like. I knew how it would end but I was unprepared. Honorable mention(s): - Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke: A delightful pseudo-Regency fantasy that’s just not quite intimate or romantic enough to fit cardigan, but it has moments that do.
- Persuasion by Jane Austen: And when you are young, they assume you know nothing / But I knew you'd linger like a tattoo kiss / I knew you'd haunt all of my what-ifs…Such a fantastic novel but I’m saving it for a later recommendation.
- A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness: Probably the best fit but I didn’t finish it; super angsty romance that is just not my genre.
the last great american dynasty She had a marvelous time ruining everything https://preview.redd.it/804s6d5i1puc1.jpg?width=298&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8201706e19a3185c1e1d5dd71029a460967353c9 Recommendation: Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell Set against the dramatic backdrop of the American Civil War, Margaret Mitchell's magnificent historical epic is an unforgettable tale of love and loss, of a nation mortally divided and a people forever changed. Above all, it is the story of beautiful, ruthless Scarlett O'Hara and the dashing soldier of fortune, Rhett Butler. Similarities: Fast-paced, upbeat, precocious; featuring glamorous, devil-may-care women who cause an uproar Review: We all know it’s racist (the characters, which would be completely excusable, but also the book itself, which is the ~problematic~ part), but that doesn’t mean it’s not also brilliant and unbelievably entertaining. Almost every character is utterly despicable and it’s a thousand pages long, but the book’s impossible to put down. Honorable mention(s): - My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier: It must have been her fault his heart gave out…Unfortunately I thought it was boring (also, avoid the movie trailer unless you want to be spoiled).
- The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid: I haven’t read it (not my genre) but from what I heard it fits like a glove.
exile (feat. bon iver) I can see you starin', honey / Like he's just your understudy / Like you'd get your knuckles bloody for me https://preview.redd.it/6pbs7m9k1puc1.jpg?width=323&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4d6bd8ab44ae6cebd25b2b818b09d22f81c21455 Recommendation: Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë Wuthering Heights is the tale of two families both joined and riven by love and hate. Cathy is a beautiful and wilful young woman torn between her soft-hearted husband and Heathcliff, the passionate and resentful man who has loved her since childhood. The power of their bond creates a maelstrom of cruelty and violence which will leave one of them dead and cast a shadow over the lives of their children. Emily Brontë's novel is a stunningly original and shocking exploration of obsessive passion. Similarities: gothic, dramatic, dark, cold, violent, obsessive, passionate; themes of jealousy and broken hearts Review: Wuthering Heights seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it kind of novel…and I love it, though it’s undeniably bizarre and populated by completely unlikeable characters. The atmosphere is incredible. The framing device and character names are confusing but they’re (mostly) supposed to be, so I always warn new readers that if you feel lost in the beginning it’s not you, it’ll all make sense when Emily wants it to. Honorable mention(s): - Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier: Also gothic, dark, and a little violent, but not about a breakup; more in the adventure genre.
my tears ricochet If I'm on fire, you'll be made of ashes too. https://preview.redd.it/t56y9hnk1puc1.jpg?width=291&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d697ef3443337ba29881b4b33e719e92995c36be Recommendation: The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas (translated by Robin Buss) Thrown in prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dantès is confined to the grim fortress of If. There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and he becomes determined not only to escape, but also to unearth the treasure and use it to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration. Dumas’ epic tale of suffering and retribution, inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment, was a hugely popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s. Similarities: Vengeful, tragic, sweeping, a little melodramatic Review: The first section of the novel will always be my favorite, but the entire thing is a fantastically fun adventure. It’s a doorstopper, but so plot-heavy that I don’t recommend an abridgement. Honorable mention(s): mirrorball I know they said the end is near / But I'm still on my tallest tiptoes / Spinning in my highest heels, love / Shining just for you. https://preview.redd.it/ltdi3g6l1puc1.jpg?width=294&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1ca7523514adeeb970992dbef45584c98159f48a Recommendation: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands. True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead. Similarities: Magical, glittering, romantic, atmospheric, vintage, dreamlike, fragile, slow Review: This novel is all about atmosphere—the plot is somewhat underwhelming and the characters are thin—but what an atmosphere it is. Morgenstern’s writing dazzles and enchants, and the love story is deeply romantic. Honorable mention(s): - The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery: I've never been a natural / All I do is try, try, try… Saving this to recommend later.
- *The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson: And when I break it's in a million pieces… I managed to fit in all my other favorite favorite novels as primary recommendations, but the tone of this one just doesn’t quite fit any track perfectly, including mirrorball. Suffice to say I love this novel. It’s terribly mismarketed as an ensemble horror novel about a group of people exploring a haunted house (it also has essentially nothing in common with the Netflix show): it’s actually an intense character study into Eleanor and her psyche that happens to have some scary moments. Recommend for readers who want a deep dive into the psychology of an insecure, lonely woman.
seven And I've been meaning to tell you / I think your house is haunted https://preview.redd.it/ccq50pwl1puc1.jpg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d654e79fb42c5f93aef81e98398ee708d959e55 Recommendation: The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother. He hasn't thought of Lettie in decades, and yet as he sits by the pond (a pond that she'd claimed was an ocean) behind the ramshackle old farmhouse, the unremembered past comes flooding back. And it is a past too strange, too frightening, too dangerous to have happened to anyone, let alone a small boy. A groundbreaking work as delicate as a butterfly's wing and as menacing as a knife in the dark, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is told with a rare understanding of all that makes us human, and shows the power of stories to reveal and shelter us from the darkness inside and out. Similarities: Bright, glittery, idyllic, nostalgic, whimsical, dreamlike, wistful, innocent, trusting, a little bit melancholy Review: The writing is beautiful and charming and the story itself is strangely compelling; it has an almost mythical feel to it, a bit like a fairytale for adults (even though the main character is a child for most of it). I think I will probably like this more when I reread it, now that I know what to expect; I was expecting something a bit more adult, more on the realism side of magical realism... But I still really liked it. Honorable mention(s): - My Friend Flicka by Mary O’Hara: Another book with a child protagonist that is really not for children at all; it’s all about growing up and learning the meaning of responsibility, and is written with a level of nuance that is usually reserved for adult literary fiction. It was a surprise favorite when I reread it as an adult.
- Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery: Sweet tea in the summer / Cross your heart, won't tell no other...
august Back when I was living for the hope of it all https://preview.redd.it/5imt3yem1puc1.jpg?width=286&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=38b4a377400f33933d7152af67de8786baaf5849 Recommendation: The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under—maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic. Similarities: Long summer days, sweltering heat, getting caught up in the moment, a twinge of sadness; “It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs, and I didn't know what I was doing in New York" Review: Plath’s prose is incredibly evocative and compelling, and I was completely caught up in Esther’s psyche. It’s not something I’d reread due to the subject matter, but I couldn’t put it down and would recommend it to those interested in psychological, sometimes disturbing character studies. this is me trying It's hard to be anywhere these days when all I want is you https://preview.redd.it/wn71ga2n1puc1.jpg?width=326&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16642a92ea091b236f0188e018691e01144df3f5 Recommendation: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë As an orphan, Jane's childhood is full of trouble, but her stubborn independence and sense of self help her to steer through the miseries inflicted by cruel relatives and a brutal school. A position as governess at the Thornfield Hall promises a kind of freedom. But Thornfield is a house full of secrets, its master a passionate, tormented man, and before long Jane faces her greatest struggle in a choice between love and self-respect. Similarities: Nostalgic, dark, vulnerable, layered, slow Review: I love this book. It has a few slow places, but it’s very easy to read and, in the true spirit of a gothic romance, filled with several truly insane twists. I think it would be a great starting place for someone looking to get into Victorian or classic literature. Honorable mention(s): - The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim: I didn't know if you'd care if I came back / I have a lot of regrets about that… A quiet, calming little novel.
- Quartet in Autumn by Barbara Pym: One of the saddest, most brutal books I’ve ever read. Oof.
- The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne by Brian Moore: So I got wasted like all my potential… Quit reading halfway through because of the sexual content, but I really wanted to like it.
- Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer: Probably a bit of a stretch to recommend this one here, but it makes sense to me on a character level.
illicit affairs You showed me colors you know / I can't see with anyone else https://preview.redd.it/ez4bxrmn1puc1.jpg?width=292&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cf7fec67ca42925dce7acf51e7eb2bf6b8979364 Recommendation: Two on a Tower by Thomas Hardy Lady Constantine breaks all the rules of decorum when she falls in love with beautiful youth Swithin St Cleeve, her social inferior and ten years her junior. Together, in an ancient monument converted into an astronomical observation tower, they create their own private universe - until the pressures of the outside world threaten to destroy it. Similarities: Messy, tragic, beautiful, sparkly, clandestine romance Review: I loved the writing style, atmosphere, and setting—as a kid I went through a phase of wanting to be an astronomer, and it never fully wore off. However, I will say that the characters are incredibly one-dimensional, the age gap is horrifying, and the ending is very bad (laughably so)....but come on, they fall in love on an astronomy tower. Can it get any more romantic than that? Honorable mention(s): - Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert: Just as perfect a recommendation, given the tone and themes.
- Possession by A.S. Byatt: Another perfect recommendation, but I’m saving it for later.
- Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton: Melodramatic with rather thin characters, this novel is completely carried by Wharton’s gorgeous, wintery writing.
invisible string Time, curious time / Gave me no compasses, gave me no signs / Were there clues I didn't see? https://preview.redd.it/g9d4yl5o1puc1.jpg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1b93c1d830c67388c9312d84d9af54fe4c72ead6 Recommendation: Piranesi by Susanna Clarke Piranesi's house is no ordinary building: its rooms are infinite, its corridors endless, its walls are lined with thousands upon thousands of statues, each one different from all the others. Within the labyrinth of halls an ocean is imprisoned; waves thunder up staircases, rooms are flooded in an instant. But Piranesi is not afraid; he understands the tides as he understands the pattern of the labyrinth itself. He lives to explore the house. There is one other person in the house—a man called The Other, who visits Piranesi twice a week and asks for help with research into A Great and Secret Knowledge. But as Piranesi explores, evidence emerges of another person, and a terrible truth begins to unravel, revealing a world beyond the one Piranesi has always known. Similarities: Whimsical, childlike, fateful, optimistic, lighthearted Review: A perfect little puzzle of a book. I won’t say much because a large part of the joy of reading it the first time is in trying to unravel the mysteries within, but suffice to say that it’s a delightful, enchanting novel that’s nearly impossible to put down (and WOW Clarke nails character voice). Honorable mention(s): - Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë: All along there was some / Invisible string / Tying you to me…
mad woman You made her like that https://preview.redd.it/3ufpmgpo1puc1.jpg?width=297&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63adc7cbeb66c28e947f816d868b1718d90d25f6 Recommendation: Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn Who are you? What have we done to each other? These are the questions Nick Dunne finds himself asking on the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary when his wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police suspect Nick. Amy's friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn't true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they weren't made by him. And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone. So what did happen to Nick's beautiful wife? Similarities: Dark, poetic, bitter, vengeful….I can't explain my thought process without spoiling it Review: This is one of the only books on the list that I haven’t read/reread in the last few years, but I loved it in college. Flynn’s writing is equal parts beautiful and razor sharp, and she clearly has a lot to say. The big reveal definitely took me by surprise. (The movie is a faithful adaptation, so if you’ve seen it you already know the whodunnit.) In my opinion this really straddles the line between mystery and literary fiction. Honorable mention(s): - Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys: A more obvious, very good fit, but I hate it (great idea, terrible execution). Major spoilers for Jane Eyre in the book description as it’s something of a prequel.
- Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton: I feel bad for Zeena, even if she’s terrible.
epiphany Just one single glimpse of relief / To make some sense of what you've seen https://preview.redd.it/17lbnz4p1puc1.jpg?width=295&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b341c05a23885dcdb2b3722195256830aca155a8 Recommendation: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr Marie-Laure lives in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where her father works. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, Werner Pfennig, an orphan, grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find that brings them news and stories from places they have never seen or imagined. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments and is enlisted to use his talent to track down the resistance. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Similarities: Quiet, ethereal, haunting, beautiful, tragic; war as a theme Review: Another book that I haven’t read in years; I liked it, but it’s not a favorite. At the time I remember struggling to connect to the characters or feel emotionally engaged; I expect I’d like it even less if I read it today due to how heavily romanticized and at times melodramatic I remember it being, which I've become more critical of as I've read more and gotten older. (If I wanted to be really mean I’d say it’s like if Hallmark set out to make a serious, romanceless war movie.) But the writing is undeniably beautiful. (Haven’t seen the Netflix series.) Honorable mention(s): All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque: An infinitely better war novel, in part because it’s not romanticized (it’s pretty brutal), but that also means the tone doesn’t fit the song. This is the one I would actually recommend if I wasn't set on sticking to my rules for this list. betty But if I just showed up at your party / Would you have me? Would you want me? https://preview.redd.it/21yt91op1puc1.jpg?width=260&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2ce5a3dfc757f93a13460079797c543225df0f7f Recommendation: Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery When Anne Shirley "erupts" into the Cuthberts's lives, they don't realize how fond they will become of the red-haired orphan. Both entertained and exasperated by her constant chatter and imaginings, they soon find it hard to remember what Green Gables was like without its adopted daughter. Similarities: Unembellished, candid, unconventional, straightforward, bright, clean Review: I cried, I laughed, and I was thoroughly enchanted by Anne. I read them all as a kid and plan to reread them all soon (this is the only one I've gotten to so far). Honorable mention(s): - Normal People by Sally Rooney: Haven’t read it (not my genre) but I get the sense that it, and a lot of contemporary relationship-focused literary fiction, would be a better fit.
peace Our coming-of-age has come and gone / Suddenly the summer, it's clear / I never had the courage of my convictions https://preview.redd.it/hj81ow4q1puc1.jpg?width=268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dfed117d7aaf75f76d4cc0f48b84a969af751210 Recommendation: The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery At twenty-nine, Valancy has never been in love, and it seems romance has passed her by. Living with her overbearing mother and meddlesome aunt, she finds her only consolations in the forbidden books of John Foster and her daydreams of the Blue Castle. Then a letter arrives from Dr. Trent—and Valancy decides to throw caution to the winds. For the first time in her life Valancy does and says exactly what she wants. Soon she discovers a surprising new world, full of love and adventures far beyond her most secret dreams. Similarities: Tmid, cautious, wistful, romantic, placid; themes of doomed love, inadequacy, longing, dread, fear of being a burden; peace kind of sounds like being on a lake in the evening Review: Kind of over the top and ridiculous, but I love it anyway. Gorgeous nature writing and incredibly romantic, and has hidden depth when it comes to characterization. Honorable mention(s): - Persuasion by Jane Austen: I never had the courage of my convictions… Austen’s prose also feels very clean and bright, like this track does.
hoax You knew the hero died, so what's the movie for? https://preview.redd.it/8gf2f3jq1puc1.jpg?width=293&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=77883759d558854e402e20e12e6a2fce5690f5f0 Recommendation: The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë When a mysterious and beautiful young widow becomes the new tenant at Wildfell Hall, rumours immediately begin to swirl around her. Almost against his will, Gilbert Markham is drawn to the elusive and singular Helen Graham, but even as he falls in love, he finds himself divided from Helen by dark secrets and painful memories from her past life. Similarities: Quiet, broken down and broken-hearted, slow, regretful, lost love, widowhood Review: Absolutely incredible novel that is written in the most poetic language (primarily diary entries by Helen) and feels surprisingly modern. Avoid reading anything about it—including back-of-book blurbs, other descriptions on Goodreads, etc.—because almost all of them spoil the novel by revealing Helen’s secret, which is the end-of-book “twist.” the lakes What should be over burrowed under my skin / In heart-stopping waves of hurt. https://preview.redd.it/q5r0geyq1puc1.jpg?width=286&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7939b58bbdda9cac6f6bd445d7864f5f629752a1 Recommendation: Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again… Working as a paid companion to a bitter elderly lady, the timid heroine of Rebecca learns her place. Life is bleak until, on a trip to the South of France, she falls in love with Maxim de Winter, a handsome widower whose proposal takes her by surprise. Whisked from Monte Carlo to Manderley, Maxim's isolated Cornish estate, the friendless young bride begins to realise she barely knows her husband at all. And in every corner of every room is the phantom of his beautiful first wife, Rebecca. Rebecca is the haunting story of a woman consumed by love and the struggle to find her identity. Similarities: Romantic, poetic, picturesque, melodramatic, vintage, contemplative, undercurrents of sadness and tragedy Review: Talk about “calamitous love and insurmountable grief”… This is the best of gothic romance paired with the best of psychological suspense, and the result is brilliant. I think it’s impossible to read this and not be deeply emotionally affected, especially if you really read between the lines and pick up on the subtextual truths that the narrator refuses to admit. To top it off, it’s written in the most beautiful, poetic, hypnotic prose I’ve ever read. My favorite novel of all time. (None of the movies succeed in capturing the spirit of the novel; I think this is a novel that’s impossible to successfully adapt because it’s so interior.) Honorable mention(s): - The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim: I want to watch wisteria grow right over my bare feet / 'Cause I haven't moved in years....
- The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery: Take me to the lakes where all the poets went to die / I don't belong, and my beloved, neither do you....
Carolina (We can all agree this is part of the folkmore era, right?) Lost I was born, lonesome I came / Lonesome I'll always stay https://preview.redd.it/d47v0qks1puc1.jpg?width=300&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=df52b19fcf9c9f8144ef6ef59c3a8cd6f40c1eab Recommendation: Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer For thirty years, Area X has remained mysterious and remote behind its intangible border - an environmental disaster zone, though to all appearances an abundant wilderness. The Southern Reach, a secretive government agency, has sent eleven expeditions to investigate Area X. One has ended in mass suicide, another in a hail of gunfire, the eleventh in a fatal cancer epidemic. Now four women embark on the twelfth expedition into the unknown. ***Similarities:***Haunting, atmospheric, nature writing, mysterious, kind of creepy Review: Absolutely amazing novel that’s primarily a character study of a woman who’s always felt more connected to nature than to other people. (I’ve seen and liked the movie, but they’re different.) Honorable mention(s): - Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens: Duh, but I haven’t read it and don’t plan to (not my genre).
- Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay: Absolutely adore this haunting, ambiguous, sometimes surreal novel… Once again, some of the most beautiful nature writing I’ve read (it's actually very similar to Annihilation with its emphasis on the insects and animals and a sublime, horrifying beauty).
- *The Willows by Algernon Blackwood: An eerie short story that unfortunately doesn’t really go anywhere, but it has a fantastic atmosphere of loneliness and desolation (and evocative nature writing).
- Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier: It's between me, the sand, and the sea…

2024.04.09 01:22 _ShinyKristille_ Proof that Ace was plotting to betray whitebeard.
| Look at this solid proof that ace wasn'y loyal to whitebeard. Look at the difference between him and Marco. Ace has tattooed the jolly roger on his back while Marco tattooed it on his chest. And you might ask how it shows Ace's plot of betrayal. Ace tattoed it on the back so he could hide it behind a shirt or kimono. While Marco proudly brandishes on his chest. Marco was loyal while Ace wasn't. Good thing Ace was killed otherwise we might've witnessed heartbreaking scenes. submitted by _ShinyKristille_ to OnePiece [link] [comments] |
