Flood Spores vs Infection forms, Strength and Weakness (Lore and Theory)

2024.06.09 17:21 leonreddit8888 Flood Spores vs Infection forms, Strength and Weakness (Lore and Theory)

People have been asking about the usefulness of the Flood Pod Infectors when spores seemingly did the same thing but potentially better. This is a fair question and something I really wanted to discuss after writing the Flood spore lore post a year ago, so I hope I can offer some clarification.
So, while both type of Flood forms were broadly categorized as Flood Infection Forms in the new encyclopedia, both served different purposes, and one type was more suitable in situations where the other wasn't.
Top Start off:

Pod Infectors

Arguably the most memorable of all Flood creatures, the Pod Infectors have appeared since the first game and were originally called simply as Infection forms, before this term became an umbrella label for different types of Flood forms sharing the same function.
Infection Forms:
All Infection forms share several key morphological traits across their variations, each suited for subduing and subverting any avaliable organic targets. The most commonly encountered Infection forms have a frond-like array, which act as the creature's sensory system, steming from soft, pod-shaped bodies filled with noxious gases that allow them to bound over the ground and obstacles at surprising speeds.
(Halo Encyclopedia 2022, p.406)
So, from this passage, we know that Pod Infectors had a good degree of mobility. In Halo Wars, it was even referenced that they could climb over cliffs, so rough terrains would not hinder their march.
Pod Infectors:
Though individually weak and easily killed, pod infectors strike in vast numbers and can move over cliffs.
(Halo Wars 2, Phoenix Log)
In contrasts, Flood spores had no means of self-propelled locomotion; they can only float aimlessly instead. The anime Halo Origins also shows us Pod Infectors that could perform guided flight. The reason why we haven't encountered these Flood types in the games might be due to the fact that the parasites were more evolved and more powerful during the Forerunner-Flood war.
So we clearly see that the regular Infection forms have an advantage over spores in maneuverability, but what matters more is another factor: Pod Infectors have weapons.
Infection Forms:
Each tendril ends in nano-scale barbs which can latch onto the target's body and cut through armor or environmental suits.
(Halo Wars 2, Phoenix Log)
While the virulence of Flood spores shouldn't be underestimated, the fact that they had virtually no offensive capabilities (they are usually just clusters holding Flood Super Cells together) means that decently protective gear such as fully-sealed environmental suits would be sufficient in keeping you safe in areas where the air is contaminated.
Moreover, Infection via a Pod Infector is by far the fastest method, which often just takes seconds to complete. This is due to the far higher dosages of spores being injected by a Pod Infector injects than infection via inhalation of spore-contaminated air.
And yes, Pod Infectors still use spores for infection.
343 Guilty Spark: "You can see how the body has been transformed by the genetic restructuring of the Flood infection. The small creatures carry spores that cause a host to mutate."
(Halo Combat Evolved, Level: The Library)
And after all, spores are just Flood cells grouped together.
Spore:
Encysted Flood cells form spores, which can remain dormant for centuries.
(Halo Encyclopedia 2022, p.404)
There's another usage for Pod Infectors, which is what we're all familiar with: to create and control Combat forms.
According to the encyclopedia, infection via spores would instead turn the hosts, living or dead, into incubation pods rather than mutating them into the typical Combat forms.
Spore:
Spores can parasite sapient and non-sapient species, consuming them and transforming their biomass into egg-like incubators for larger, more mobile Flood Infection forms.
(Halo Wars 2, Phoenix Logs)
These incubators are commonly called "Blisters" or "Flood eggs".
The necessity of a Pod Infector in order to create a Combat form is implied by another passage saying that the Flood cells in the wounds would transform the target into a Blister rather than a Combat form.
Infection forms:
Even if the infection form is quickly removed, Flood cells in the wounds will slowly consume the victim and turn them into quivering, spore-packed Blisters.
(Halo Wars 2, Phoenix Log)
This actually makes sense, since a Pod Infector does possess some rudimental level of sentience. This enables the creature to control the infection processes, while spores simply just convert original biomass into more Flood matters.
In action, Pod Infectors replaces the brain as the host's commanding "organ", controlling all functions, processing all knowledge and experience from the host, and absorbing them to the collective hive-consciousness.
Infection forms:
Though barely intelligent on their own, once an infection form infiltrates a sentient creature they turn the victim's cognitive power to the furtherance of Flood goals. Each is an insidious puppeteer, able to sift through memories of any sentient creature to learn of military countermeasures, security access codes, and the location of population centers.
(Halo Wars 2, Phoenix Log)
Pod Infectors can perform biological modification for the host.
Combat form:
The infection form does augment its new body and repair minor damage in order to better serve as a living weapon, but ultimately the combat form is utterly disposable.
(Halo Wars 2, Phoenix Log)
This comes in the form of alterations of the host's anatomical structures.
Combat forms possess unnatural physical strength, perhaps gained through the mutations of the host's musculoskeletal structures.
(Halo Encyclopedia 2009, p.165)
We've also seen some very extensive bodily restructuring, such as this human being grotesquely contorted.
Nevertheless, there are a few instances where the creation of Combat forms occured without Pod Infectors present.
  1. UNSC marine Orlav was slashed in the back by a Combat form. Even when a piece of Flood flesh was removed, she turned into a Combat form not long after.
  2. On the infested surface of Shield World 0459, one ODST mentioned he was bitten by the Flood before inevitably transforming into a Combat form.
No explanation has been given; my reasoning would be that both incidents happened near a Proto-Gravemind. One was in the engine room of UNSC Mona Lisa, and one was on Trove, so the respective Compound mind can assume direct control over the Flood easily by themselves.
All in all, Pod Infectors are the more direct threats. They are very agile, they have razor sharp claws, they convert victims far quicker than any other forms, and they can choose what they will do with their victims.
Now, what do Flood spores excel at?

Spores

Unlike Pod Infectors, spores don't aggressively attack prey, which makes them seem as the lesser threats compared to other Flood presences. However, this works only in the Flood's own favor, as spores can spread further and under everyone's noses because the defenders are too occupied.
Moreover, the tendency of the spores to infest insignificant organisms as well as propogate on inanimate objects actually keep them and their growth under the radar.
How did it get there in the first place? Adequate wondered. It was highly improbable that the Flood could have arrived here independently. Yes, Flood spores could spread on meteors and comets, as well as derelict space equipment hurtling around the stars.
(Halo Fractures, Defender of the Storm)
In one short story, "Defender of the Storm", the Forerunner space station of Seclusion had pods filled with microscopic lifeforms that broke down biological wastes from the residents.
Worst of all, they had collectively decided the dirtiest assignment on the station should again fall to him: gathering up packs of the occupants’ waste for delivery to the digester units, one located at the end of each vane. Microorganisms inside the units broke down the foul matter to generate power, while releasing unwanted gases into the atmosphere.
(Halo Fractures, Defender of the Storm)
It was suggested that these pods were secretly tainted with Flood spores.
“Yes. The infestation likely began in the replacement digester units just installed by the service team.”
“The apparatus that breaks down waste. That’s why the outbreak started on the tips of the vanes.”
“Correct. They bring in fresh pods of microorganisms annually. Flood spores must have been mixed in with them and been awakened. ...
(Halo Fractures, Defender of the Storm)
The Ancilla further commented on the likelihood that Flood spores feasted on the microorganisms as well as the body wastes brought to those pods to further their growth.
"... The malleable seals would have given them a means of escape. They must have infected several of our sentries, taking them directly to combat forms—and their bodies gave rise to the infection forms we now see. I also suspect the Flood is drawing on the biomass in the digester pods to create an environment that might exponentially increase the rate and severity of infestation.”
(Halo Fractures, Defender of the Storm)
So spores eats everything... even shit or the soil, and unless you actively keep track of every surfaces and every hidden spaces, you're bound to miss pockets of infestation caused by spores.
This is perhaps Flood spore's biggest advatange. The spores' reproduction and propagation processes are extremely efficient, even by Flood standard.
I'll be using the Blisters mentioned above as my examples.
According to official depictions, we can see that the hosts who were turned into Blisters are completely broken down and molded into large egg-shaped entities.
This is why I call it efficient, as there is no biomass that was left out or wasted. Spores eat everything and transform what they eat into more of themselves, but it doesn't end there.
As purpose-built forms, Blisters are created to produce more Flood creatures, ranging from simple Pod Infectors, to more complex Pure forms, and, you guess it, more Flood spores.
Blisters:
Non-sapient animals and mangled corpses deemed unfit for being harnessed into larger Combat forms are seeded with Flood cells and quickly transformed into sacs filled with Infection forms and membranes that function as incubation chambers for the development of spores.
(Halo Encyclopedia 2022, p.407)
For those instances where spores do turn their victims into Combat forms, one similarity remains.
Combat Form:
Combat Forms are covered in spore-filled polyps and much of their internal organs are in the process of being consumed and replaced with FSC accretions that function as support lattices, protecting a sickly green liquid that contains Flood spores in suspension.
(Halo, Encyclopedia 2022, p.408)
Combat forms additionally operate as mobile incubators and gestate spores, though they may produce a lower quantity. After all, unlike Blisters which are hosts whose entire body mass is transformed into a single-purposed and stationary pseudo-organ, Combat forms still need body parts for mobility, attack, and handling of salvaged equipment and technology.
Do be noted that this really isn't a new lore. It has been this case since the first game.
Guilty Spark: "The mutated host then produces spores that can pass the Flood to others. It is insidious and elegant. As long as any hosts remain, the Flood is virulent."
(Halo: Combat Evolved, Level The Library)
The fact that Combat forms spawn spores means that any physical harms inflicted on them...
Combat Form:
Ironically, damages incurred by this form scatters small chunks of infected flesh and distribute it in the environment, aiding the Flood in spreading its influence.
(Halo, Encyclopedia 2022, p.408)
... would inadvertently distribute fatally virulent substances everywhere.
And this trait isn't unique to Combat forms. Pod Infectors are stated by Guilty Spark to also carry spores, which I mentioned above.
Pure forms which are the products of masses of Flood Super Cells morphed into biological war machines would carry spores inside them as well. For example, we see the Spawner forms constantly emit clouds of spores from the holes on their back.
It's also stated that the Gravemind can create a huge quantity of spores by itself.
The Gravemind's tentacled body produces billions of Flood spores.
(Halo, Encyclopedia 2012, p.169)
Now the next and my final point.
I am now looking from a broader perspective — by combining all the characteristics discussed so far and tying them into the discussion about the Flood's modus operandi.
So, we know spores can spread and infest stealthily. We know spores can operate for a long duration of time. We know spores can consume practically anything organic. We know spores can create constructs to create more sproes (Blisters, Combat forms).
In fact, tiny spores can evolve into living Flood creatures...
The Gravemind:
The Flood is the ultimate parasite. It's able to use any sentient being as food, and those infected by the Flood stand no chance. Infection is a gradual process, whereby an Infection Form, grown from a tiny spore, bonds the victim to the Flood's central intelligence and slowly consumes the contents of the host creature's mind.
(Halo, Encyclopedia 2011, p.20)
All these traits combined make spores the integral aspect of the parasite's expansion and conquest.
To put it this way: Flood spores are products of the Flood infestation, and at the same time, they represent the parasite's ... "means of production".
The phenomenon of "Blightlands" best exemplify this.
Blightland:
For its part, the Flood will seek to adjust local environmental factors in its favor immediately after reaching the Coordinated stage. If not stopped, Blightlands are the result of uncontained Flood expansion: Areas around established hives filled with FSC growth and Spore bodies, which harvested the vitality of the soil, soak up solar energy, and consume all native lives within its boundaries.
(Halo Encyclopedia 2022, p.413)
Notice that the passage said "around" the hives?
In regards to Flood infestations, the parasites don't just build hives, which are either repurposed buildings or completely made out of pure biomass, but they also set up the fundations and infrastructures by seeding spores and other bioforms to the surrounding regions.
Basically, the Blightlands are Flood-controlled regions where spores and other growth gathered "resources", from lifeforms and latent energy alike, and the hives are the buildings and bases within the regions.
Blightlands also serve as foundations for future Flood structures and hives to build on top of. We've seen this at the start of the outbreak on High Charity, numerous disparate Flood growth of varying sizes appeared in the corridors and on walls. They continued to fester until they formed into a new hive that blanketed every surface areas there was.
There's more, but before I talk about that, there's an intriguing quote from the encyclopedia:
Hives:
The Flood's only desire is to expand and corrupt. Once enough biomass is available, the parasite can establish lairs for defense and the growth of specialized forms. ... These tumorous blights are the most obvious targets for attack and cleansing, but they are simply a sympton of Flood infestation, not its causes. The Forerunners recognized this distinction far too late, after countless sterilization missions resulted in empty victories.
(Halo Encyclopedia 2022, p.404)
Interestingly, destroying the hives wouldn't necessarily deliver the critical blow, and I think Flood spores' various attributes contribute to this phenomena.
We have concluded that Flood spores are incredibly common: All types of Flood forms carry and disperse spores either voluntarily or by outside factors (i.e. combat damage). This makes it easy for the Flood to cause environmental corruption over a large area, which will create Blightlands.
We also have concluded that spores are fruitful "building tools". When a spore land on an environment of ample bio-organic materials, they can feast on all the resources and convert them into Flood forms or structures, which eventually become new hives; it can be even described as "self-replicating".
This makes the Flood stand out from other factions in Halo. When the issue regarding manufacturing comes to mind, other races — other the Forerunners, are reliant on specialized instruments or facilities to process and refine raw substances and factories to fabricate products.
The Flood can do that with just their most basic vectors that all known Flood forms carry and generate; hives simply do things more efficiently and on a muuch larger scale.
The spores allow the parasite's "industry" to be decentralized, and the expansion wouldn't be crippled when the birthing hive is destroyed. Given enough time, another hive can arise from the surrounding Blightland.

TLDR

Pod Infectors possess superior mobility and actual weaponry. Their speed and ferocity make them suitable for building up an army, and their rudimentary intelligence makes them much better at managing a fighting force.
Spores are adept at facilitating a comprehensive and expanding network of infrastructure, which they can do without the enemy's notice. Spores may work slower, but their subtlety and pervasiveness make them extremely dangerous threats, especially when their infestation goes unnoticed or uncontained for too long.

Crossroads
Folks, Welcome Here.
We sort of have a complexity in formation right now. It is becoming more and more evident that there may have been a good bit of corruption at the highest levels, even stemming from the Deputy Director of the Division of AntiVirals.
Originally, I put Tomfoolery together and then put this addition out.
So, some additional evidence has emerged and more will be forthcoming.
https://preview.redd.it/08vbpm9m6j5d1.png?width=828&format=png&auto=webp&s=ff52d8f2e17e55499be4f4bb54724fb6afbf4918
That appropriately concise and respectful letter was met with:
https://preview.redd.it/4kidau4a7j5d1.png?width=828&format=png&auto=webp&s=5238d230402c5e5ff08b8af3d81c8b87041f967e
So, unfortunately, a lawsuit is now in process which involves NP, KK the SEC and the DOJ. Although much of what is being deliberated within the trial has to do with CytoDyn, CytoDyn has no control as to what will be said or exposed during those proceedings. The case is between NP, KK and the SEC/DOJ and although everything took place at CytoDyn, CytoDyn has nothing to do with the trial. NP has his own lawyers, KK has his own lawyers and what these lawyers dig up and choose to expose for the benefit of their clients could impact CytoDyn, but that is of no concern to those attorneys as they must act in the best interest of their clients who are NP and KK.
The preceding discussion of the evidence presented in the two links above makes it clear that these lawyers might be attempting to show how CytoDyn was doomed from the get-go regardless of what ever kind of shit or pristine BLA was submitted, it would have received an RTF. A convincing argument could be made based on the information already in their hands while even more information is pending release. Certainly, the release of such a judgement would not cast a stellar impression or shadow upon the entity that decides CytoDyn's judgement. No, rather, it would cast a rather corrupt shadow, making them out to be a bunch of crooks willing to accept responsibility for the blood of thousands if not millions, in order to propagate their own agenda over CytoDyn's.
At a time of dire crisis, judgements were made to disapprove a drug which had very strong evidence of its capacity to reverse said crisis, even if that evidence was demonstrated only in 10 patients. After reading the contents of that letter, addressed to a physician and sent by a fellow physician, Dr. Lalezari, and with his response being, "I support a Refuse-To-File, even if they can fix a few things, it would be worth it. Plus, it buys us a little time when we need it most.", all together proves that the interests of the Deputy Director of the Division of AntiVirals had minimal interest in curing or reversing the crisis at hand but was much more interested in finding ways to get their selected drug Remdesivir to the forefront.
They were not concerned about humanity or the overall general health of the American Public, but rather their own monetary goals, or Fishy Fauci's goals for residual income. But as for the hundreds of thousands of lives which could have been saved, they claim they were trying to find a solution, when they purposefully threw out the window a perfectly suitable solution in favor of Fishy's worthless expensive Band-Aid that did nothing other than make things worse. It was not about the people of the republic who he was serving, but much more about him/them getting their way about what drug to authorize.
Lalezari submits a convincing letter which puts forth 3 strong reasons as to how leronlimab's mechanism of action shuts down the virus. He puts forth compelling lab results and biomarker data which to another fellow physician should have resulted in swift action to escalate leronlimab's path forward thereby facilitating its distribution to as many sick patients as was reasonable and possible. However, this Deputy Director of the Division of AntiVirals (DDDAV) had no intention of backing CytoDyn and instead supported a Refuse-To-File. Somehow, despite all the clear irrefutable evidence of a powerful drug against this virus, they were able to, within the rules, place blindfolds over their eyes so as to eliminate that evidence from the record and to permit within that evidence pool, only that which would deprive leronlimab of further testing.
This DDDAV would eventually be leaving the administration. It didn't matter to him what the aftermath of his decision was. He left CytoDyn in a bad situation which would lead to near bankruptcy and a 2 yearlong clinical hold which had to be delt with. That was of no concern of his. His career and the goals of his superiors were all that mattered to him because he had other ulterior motives where he was headed.
Recall the favor this Division of AntiVirals showed to Gilead when they changed the primary endpoints of the Remdesivir trial, so that their chosen drug could squeeze on by to become statistically significant? That was of far greater concern to him/them than getting leronlimab in the hands of patients who needed its healing.
https://preview.redd.it/g1a9bfo5gj5d1.png?width=664&format=png&auto=webp&s=1aac97189f18957a7059b60460cf29980186d116
"Gilead supersizes remdesivir trials, changes primary endpoint Fierce Biotech
Data on 53 Patients Treated With Investigational Antiviral Remdesivir Through the Compassionate Use Program Published in New England Journal of Medicine (gilead.com)
Here Scott Kelly brings up Gilead. He considers it "odd" that Gilead changed their trial size and their primary endpoints. He makes mention of the poor side effect profile that remdesivir has especially regarding renal/kidney and liver failure. Despite this, Gilead was permitted to completely modify this trial.
Gilead had to get their remdesivir approved. Fishy Fauci made his mind up on which drug would get the EUA to help treat COVID. It never would have been approved using the previous trial size and previous endpoints. They had to be changed to suit the performance of the drug. They needed many more patients and a different endpoint. And the trial was permitted to be changed. Gilead was permitted to bend the rules while all the other potential drug candidates were slow walked and had significant obstacles put before them. When has this ever occurred in drug making history?
Right after Gilead modified their remdesivir trial, CytoDyn has the meeting with the authority that following the 2nd leronlimab injection on the 7th day of treatment, there would be no more further injections, yet, the endpoint, would still happen around day 30. So, day 0 and day 7 were the days for leronlimab treatment, but nothing on day 14 and nothing on day 21, but the assessment would still take place on day 28 or so. No bending of the rules for CytoDyn. 24 days of no treatment, then measure and assess. Yeah, that is fair. Gilead completely overhauls their trial with no questions asked while CytoDyn has to jump through hoops to clear the bar."
Who was the DDDAV really working for? CytoDyn was nothing to him. Even Dr. Lalezari was nothing to him. He refers to Dr. Lalezari as a conman in other emails and wanted to be "gagged with a spoon" when confronted with CytoDyn's requests while Dr. Lalezari had high regards and respect for him as a fellow physician.
From 12/2021 Dr. Lalezari Presentation to NIH:
"So, they were on clinical hold, and I spoke with Jeff Murray*. And Jeff said to me,* Jay, why don't you do something useful and work on good antiviral therapy for COVID*? And what I said to Jeff was, you know, Jeff, we worked on oseltamivir and zanamivir. In those studies, and I'm showing data here from Rich Whitley, that you can reduce viral loads and viral shedding by several days with these good antivirals, but you actually don't change the course of the illness.*
00:15:36
And you certainly don't change it unless you get in very early. You don't change it that much. So, I convinced Jeff that, you know, I thought we were going to need something to deal with immune dysregulation and that leronlimab might have a role here. So, they said, okay, you can have CD10*, which was a phase two randomized double-blind placebo in mild to moderate illness. So, one of their concerns, besides the fact that* they fundamentally didn't understand or believe that leronlimab would have any role in this illness, one of their concerns was the possible immunosuppression that might come with CCR5 blockade*."*
What was the DDDAV's intention here in asking Dr. Lalezari to work on an anti-viral therapy for COVID? Was he hoping that leronlimab would be an answer so that CytoDyn might be picked up for much less by his new company?
So now it has been over 3 years and CytoDyn is working diligently seeking out the FDA's acceptance of the new company it has become. Yet, there is hard evidence that NP lawyers are exposing the administration who CytoDyn seeks both the favor and the acceptance of. NP needs to win his case and he may end up trashing the administration. If not NP, then KK also needs to win, (but he won't), but they have their own interests in mind while CytoDyn has their interests in mind. It is clear, the DDDAV betrayed everyone, NP, KK and CytoDyn in favor of their own ulterior motives and then he would leave the administration anyway, to go work elsewhere. But, neither he, nor the administration, nor Gilead really ever believed that CytoDyn would make it this far. They likely thought that with the issuance of the RTF of the BLA and the imposition of the clinical hold, CytoDyn would just dry up and die. But that did not happen thanks in great part to David Welch.
So now, CytoDyn finds itself at a crossroads. CytoDyn absolutely requires mandatory FDA acceptance and favor. But what if NP or KK attributes blame of their case upon the DDDAV's clear corruption scandal which was clearly exhibited against their cause? How does that make the administration look? CytoDyn cannot be blamed for NP's or KK's exposition of the DDDAV who represents the administration. So, what must CytoDyn do now so as to not disrespect the administration?
Currently CytoDyn's legal concerns right now is Amarex. There are no other cases directed any deeper than that. But it sure does seem somehow that Gilead is closely involved in all of this. It is clear that the DDDAV wanted Remdesivir over leronlimab for COVID. Possibly, if CytoDyn/Sidley Austin makes a promise not to pursue anything further beyond just Amarex, then the administration might become very willing to treat CytoDyn the same way it treats Gilead. After all, the administration backed everything the DDDAV did and that doesn't need to be elaborated on. So if CytoDyn keeps it covered, all the better for the administration. CytoDyn needs to do whatever it takes to maintain the administration's favor and Sidley Austin is aware of this. There cannot be any blackmailing of the administration. There cannot be any bad mouthing of the administration. CytoDyn needs to get leronlimab approved. Approved by who? By the administration.
So, NP and KK may have the DDDAV right where they want them, but CytoDyn finds itself at a crossroads and their choice has to be to acquit the administration in every aspect and to forgive all prior wrongs but to work jointly in fairness towards the approval of this drug. For CytoDyn however, this is more like a Catch 22 and it needs to play its cards right. The administration shall always have the upper hand because this is their game and CytoDyn is only a player, while they are the game's controller. We play the game by their rules even if they don't obey their own rules. Even if the DDDAV altered the outcome to the administration's benefit, to Remdesivir's benefit, whether it is for the good of the people or not, it is what the DDDAV wanted, and it is what the DDDAV got. But the DDDAV is gone now as far as CytoDyn is concerned, maybe not for NP or KK, but for CytoDyn he is out of the way, and the favor and acceptance of the administration remains priority.
It is CytoDyn's hope that the administration grants CytoDyn favor in the testing of leronlimab in a fair and just manner and that they now understand that the drug is harmless and that its mechanism of action via CCR5 blockade both interferes with HIV replication as well as reduces Inflammation and Immune Activation. It is CytoDyn's hope and request that they hear the words and requests of Dr. Lalezari and respect his fair requests.
This upper-level respect must be maintained between CytoDyn and the administration. This is the only way CytoDyn succeeds, that they respect Dr. Lalezari and that Dr. Lalezari maintains his respect for the administration. If this relationship remains in place, leronlimab's approval becomes dependent upon leronlimab's performance. Without this relationship in place, leronlimab won't find an approval regardless of how well it performs if it even gets an opportunity to perform. This top-level relationship is the key to leronlimab's approval and CytoDyn must take every step to ensure this pact be upheld regardless of what NP or KK end up doing.
CytoDyn must be willing to forgive prior wrong. The administration needs to want to see this drug approved as does Dr. Lalezari and together their job shall be achieved without much difficulty. But if the administration does not see eye to eye with Dr. Lalezari, leronlimab would make it very hard for them to find a roundabout way to deny its approval. If the administration for some unfounded reason, decides upon a lesser drug instead of the time tested superior leronlimab, again, that would become another debacle CytoDyn would face yet again. Therefore, it is imperative to see eye to eye with the administration.
The DDDAV may have made it possible for NP and KK to walk away while also providing the means by which CytoDyn/SA might compromise with the administration for their favor and acceptance. In order to save face, the administration might work for the people by working favorably with CytoDyn towards a leronlimab approval. The war is still on and CytoDyn is in it to win it. The DDDAV almost had CytoDyn derailed, but it is still in the game and now, might have the favor of the master of the games. They can no longer say, we did not know how safe the drug was. The hold has been lifted.

Kazue tried not to fret as the dungeon waited for the arrival of their invaders. It took hours after the message arrived for the first group to cross into their territory. Without foreknowledge, and if their territory truly began where most thought it did, there would have been nothing to make this group stand out from others. They didn't even head directly to the town, they skirted well clear of the trading post and made their way down to the trail leading up from the main road, and then came back up along the trail to arrive from the same direction as other groups did.
The first notable anomaly was in the third group to arrive. Mordecai was examining magical auras very carefully, but even he missed it at first. One of the people in this group proved to have a new variation of the token that had been used previously to summon enemies deep into their territory, but it had been tucked away deep into their pack. But as they had to sign up for an entry slot that started the next day, they took rooms in the inn.
And placed their bags down. Unattended. In a dungeon's territory.
The entire contents of the bags were analyzed in an instant, and the odd magic of the talisman was noted. She watched as Mordecai crafted a physical replica and imbued it with an aura that would look like the original to most people. A skilled mage or arcane craftsman would be able to tell the difference if they examined it closely.
While he was doing that, Kazue stole all their potions and replaced them with weaker variants, along with subtly sabotaging other items such as arrows.
If they had done this to normal delvers there may have been repercussions for acting against these people in what appeared to be a safe area. But both by their actions and by carrying summoning tokens with the same traits as the previous enemies had used, these groups had shown themselves to be hostile to the dungeon.
And there are no safe spaces for invaders.
Letting these people enter both routes grated on Kazue's sensibilities and instincts; she knew they were not truly here for any reason other than violence. But Mordecai had a plan, even if he was already modifying it with a new idea because of the tokens. The presence of so many hostiles was also rapidly finishing off their deficit and giving Kazue enough mana to expand their prison.
The next twist came shortly after a hundred invaders had entered their outer territory, and the first few groups had started down each path. Cold fury bloomed in Mordecai, drawing Kazue's attention to the new group. As soon as she recognized two of them, her own ire began to simmer.
The oni was easy to spot, and they recognized the bandit Akuma's face immediately. And walking beside him was a man that neither of them had seen before, but whose likeness had been shown to them. Lord Antoine Demidov.
Kazue wanted to claw their eyes out.
She'd never felt so bloodthirsty before. When they'd been invaded before she'd been scared and angry, but she hadn't felt such a personal hatred of another person. It was hard to not order those two to be attacked immediately, but they needed to follow Mordecai's plan if they wanted to make sure they got everyone.
By the next day, the only groups on the signup boards were those of the invaders.
The day after that, the dungeon began the next stage of their plan.
When the invaders in the trading post awoke that morning, they found it deserted by everyone but them and the town emptied of all supplies and merchandise. The contents that belonged to outsiders were carefully marked so that they could be returned, but they would give no spoils to these people.
Antoine gathered a larger group together and sent in a few scouts followed by some heavily armored muscle, and slowly added more groups to investigate. The shrines were deserted, and the path selection chamber was open, but the pedestal was gone. Instead, the third door was revealed, showing the path to hell.
While the mercenaries scouted the entrance to ensure that no traps waited, the rooms remained quiet. It was only when Antoine and Akuma approached the selection chamber than the dungeon showed its hand.
Two pedestals that flanked the opening into the selection chamber activated, one of them being controlled by Mordecai to display his image. "Invaders. Killers. Murderers." Kazue's illusion hissed at them, channeling her genuine anger into this performance.
Mordecai played opposite to her, cool and unflinching. "Last night, one of the groups you sent in made a slip of the tongue. Now that we know part of your plan, well, we can't prevent you from entering. But we can make it unpleasant. As for the portion of your forces already inside the dungeon, we're going to be spending some time sorting them out from the proper delvers. Hopefully, no innocents will get caught in the way. You should find at least some of them joining you in the sewers, where there are no rules restricting groups. And no rules about fair play."
Antoine sneered, "Do you think to trick me with paltry threats, demon spawn? We've come prepared to cleanse the world of your filth, and we'll burn you and your whores to ash. We prepared for this, thanks to Akuma's recounting of your previous encounter. Men, begin!"
They had obviously trained in this maneuver as various troops began unloading alchemical flasks that were rolled down the slope and into the awaiting darkness. Then an array of tower shields was erected before several mages launched fireballs down into the sewer depths.
The results were less spectacular than they might have hoped, though there was still a multistage explosion. It did not, however, propagate down the sewer the way that the invaders had undoubtedly hoped it would.
Mordecai smiled unpleasantly. "We've had time to prepare as well. Don't think we've neglected to evolve some countermeasures ourselves. Oh, and Lord Antoine Demidov, I know exactly who you are. Don't think of running away, or I will hunt you down. So come on little Tony boy, show me what you've got. One of my wives already beat you up once, maybe I should let the other one have a go at you too?"
And with that provocation complete, both illusions cut off. Mordecai had fibbed a touch in his parting words, his phrasing had implied that they'd evolved ice mold, infamous for its dangerous ability to consume heat and fire to fuel its growth. In fact, the alchemical flasks had been part of Kazue's sabotage and his avatar had been present in the sewer in order to counter the blast of fire.
Antoine's response was fairly predictable, and despite Akuma arguing that they should cut their losses, the prideful young lord had to have his way and ordered his troops to make their way into the dungeon. He at least let the professionals do their job, and they set about countering the slick slope before they actually descended. The dungeon couldn't interfere with the frame they put in front of and inside of the doorway or the ropes attached to the framework, at least, so long as any of it was attended. But eventually, the entire group made its way into the sewers, the deadly spikes carefully broken and a path cleared.
While this was going on, the dungeon was dealing with its other hostile visitors. The various groups were either at the rest spot before the library, the rest spot at the entrance of the mushroom forest on the combat side, or otherwise spread throughout those two zones, as everyone from the day before had the time to clear the first three zones. At the same time that the initial selection room was set for the hell path, every entrance and exit to the library and mushroom forest zones opened to the hidden paths they'd constructed so many months ago. And much like the trading post, the floors were emptied of contents. However, their inhabitants remained, though they were hidden for now.
Leaflets fluttered from the ceiling, all saying the same thing. [We know your intentions, you have been separated and divided. Those who surrender will not be harmed. All others will be eliminated as threats. To surrender, gift the dungeon your weapons and armor.]
Most of the invaders in the dungeon were in large enough groups that confidence and peer pressure dominated. However, a couple of the groups were isolated enough that they chose to not risk being able to make it to another group in time, and a handful of individuals were able to slip away to surrender privately. The tunnels that had previously been used to ensure a healer was always nearby were now used to have the dungeon's warriors surround these groups and take the prisoners away. All told, they had eighteen people surrender. A nearly ten percent reduction in enemy forces before they even engaged in combat.
The forces on the non-combat path were ignored for the moment, to encourage them to make their way into the sewers. The forces on the combat path and not in one of the designated safe spaces were engaged as soon as their intentions were clear, and there was no longer any hint of fairness or encounters meant to merely challenges. They were harried and harassed, constantly assaulted by carefully timed waves to give them no opportunity to rest. And their only exit was through the boss room, while they were still being attacked by the regular floor inhabitants. None of the groups that had been scattered through the forest made it past Sarcomaag and Klastoria despite doing their best to simply fight their way through to the open exit.
Those scattered on the library level faired much better, but a little under half of them fell before they made it to the sewer. Biblios and Horace were injured during their participation in the running battle, but they would have faired much worse if the merged groups had made a stand. Of course, those groups would have lost more people too, and unlike them, the dungeon bosses would be back in action in less than twelve hours. So fighting their way past was the wisest move.
The two merged groups in the safe zones both chose to enter the sewers through the entrance near them, rather than fighting across the floor to skip part of the sewer. It was a rational seeming decision, but if they had fought across the floor, uniting with the small scattered groups might have cost them fewer casualties.
The fighting in the sewers was a slog in more ways than one. In favor of the invaders, these groups were already gathered together into larger forces, and their spellcasters could focus their defensive spells on acid, poison, and disease. But these sewers were hostile lands even to the dungeon inhabitants, and the presence of literal fresh meat attracted the attention of every single predatory scavenger in the sewers. Nothing was safe here; even the crystal flowers had become explosive traps, and the crystal shards had to be removed quickly from any survivors for they acted as quick-growing seeds that would consume the flesh they had been embedded in. Meat was much more nutritious than muck or the acidic bodies of slimes and oozes.
The largest group was the one facing the least resistance, and despite the delay caused by making the entrance ramp safer, they were moving more quickly through the hell route than the groups further on. Which was when the next stage of the trap was sprung.
Such a large group had attracted the attention of everything in the sewers, which also meant that they'd cleared out every significant hostile creature in the sewers. The dungeon's inhabitants in the early zones were entirely unoccupied, so now Mordecai gave them something to do. They flooded into the sewers behind the small army and charged forward.
The first waves were not terribly dangerous to the veteran mercenaries who were now formed up into proper ranks, but there were a lot of them and it now meant that the troops were facing a battle on two fronts. Additionally, as the army cleared the sewers of a particular zone, Mordecai could send in the inhabitants of that zone to join the earlier ones, and every twelve hours he had a new wave available.
And finally, once Mordecai had sent in the first of their inhabitants, Kazue sent a rabkin to fly to their borders and signal the troops that had come from Riverbridge and Azeria in response to their request for aid. These were the final backup plans if the invaders proved more dangerous than Mordecai had estimated. For now, the two sets of troops followed their guides, stalking the tail end of the army from the safety of the dungeon's normal paths.
While the invaders slogged their way forward under constant assault, there was still the matter of the talismans to deal with.

2024.06.09 17:11 brendanbastine A GUIDE TO MASTERING PRODUCTIVITY AND PRIORITIZATION

BY BRENDAN BASTINE MAY 31, 2024 ARTICLES

In today’s fast-paced world, where demands constantly tug at our attention, mastering productivity and prioritization has become more crucial than ever. The ability to navigate through an ever-growing list of tasks efficiently can mean the difference between success and overwhelming chaos. Yet, despite the importance of these skills, many find themselves struggling to juggle competing priorities and deadlines. Struggling with productivity and prioritization isn’t your fault. The sad truth is that no one teaches you how to prioritize, how to juggle competing priorities, or how to be productive. Let’s take a look at some of the strategies to help streamline workflows, manage your to-do list and regain control of your time management.

Consolidate Your Task List

The first step in regaining control over your tasks is to consolidate them into a single, centralized location. Scatterbrain is the enemy of productivity, and having tasks strewn across various platforms only adds to the confusion. By consolidating your tasks, whether through a dedicated task management app or a simple digital document, you create a clear and organized space where all your responsibilities reside. This not only reduces the risk of overlooking or losing sight of important tasks but also provides a comprehensive overview of your workload.
If you’re already using a task management app, take advantage of its integrations to streamline task consolidation further. Many apps offer integrations with popular tools like calendars, emails, and communication platforms, allowing you to sync tasks seamlessly across different tools despite where the task originated. By harnessing the power of integrations, you can ensure that all your tasks are synchronized and up-to-date, eliminating the need to switch between multiple apps and reducing the risk of missing deadlines.

Prioritize Your Tasks

Once you’ve consolidated your task list, the next step is to prioritize your tasks effectively. Not all tasks are created equal. Attempting to tackle them in random order can lead to inefficiency, frustration, and missed deadlines. One popular framework for prioritization is the Eisenhower Matrix, which categorizes tasks based on their urgency and importance.
At the top of the matrix are tasks that are both urgent and important—these are your high-priority tasks that require immediate attention. These could be deadlines, important meetings, or critical deliverables that cannot be delayed. Next are tasks that are urgent but not important. These are your medium-priority tasks that require your attention. Due to the urgency of these tasks, it’s important these are scheduled to be completed prior to their deadline. These could be meetings, project management tasks, or collaboration efforts. Some may choose to delegate these tasks, especially if you are unable to meet the required deadline and they do not require your specific skill set. Then come tasks that are not urgent but important—these are your low-priority tasks that contribute to long-term goals but can be scheduled flexibly. Finally, there are tasks that are neither urgent nor important. The Eisenhower matrix dictates that these tasks should be deleted. I, however, disagree. These tasks made the list because you deemed them necessary to complete. These are your time-filler tasks that can be tackled during downtime or delegated to others. I know what you’re thinking, who has down time? Consider using time between meetings or other scheduled tasks to complete these. Whenever possible, these tasks should be delegated and given a due date.
When prioritizing tasks, it’s essential to assess their relative importance and urgency objectively. While some tasks may seem urgent due to external pressures or deadlines, it’s crucial to differentiate between true priorities and mere distractions. Seeking guidance from managers or colleagues can also provide valuable insights into the relative importance of competing tasks, helping you make more informed decisions about where to focus your time and energy.

Integrate Your Task List with Your Calendar

Once you’ve prioritized your tasks, the next step is to integrate your task list with your calendar to create a structured schedule. Your calendar serves as a roadmap for your day, guiding you through your tasks and appointments with clarity and purpose. By merging your task list with your calendar, you can ensure that your time is allocated efficiently and that no important tasks slip through the cracks. Most integrations will only show you the task name and will likely link back to the task itself for details. When creating tasks, ensure the summary is descriptive, especially if the due date is scheduled a few months out. The important thing to remember is that the task itself is on your calendar to complete. The details of the task can be looked up if they are not brought over to the task itself.
(I recently made a guide to color-coding your calendar; read the guide OR, if you’re a visual learner, watch the video.)
One effective strategy for integrating your task list with your calendar is to employ color coding to visually differentiate task priorities. For example, you could use red to represent high-priority tasks, orange for medium-priority tasks, green for low-priority tasks, and blue for time-filler tasks. By color coding your calendar, you create a visual cue that makes it easy to identify task priorities at a glance, allowing you to focus your attention on the most important tasks first.
In addition to color coding, it’s also helpful to label your calendar entries with descriptive titles that provide context about each task. This ensures that you have a clear understanding of what needs to be done and why it’s important, helping you stay focused and motivated throughout the day. By integrating your task list with your calendar in this way, you create a seamless workflow that maximizes productivity and minimizes distractions.

Follow the 80/60/40 Rule and Maintain Tasks on Deck

To maintain a consistent level of productivity, it’s essential to follow a structured approach to scheduling your tasks and meetings. One effective strategy is the 80/60/40 rule, which involves allocating a specific percentage of your calendar to tasks and meetings each day, depending on their urgency and importance.
According to the 80/60/40 rule, you should aim to fill 80% of your calendar today with tasks and meetings, leaving the remaining 20% for breaks and unexpected interruptions. Assuming you are working an 8 hour workday, this is equivalent to scheduling 6.5 hours. This allows you to allocate sufficient time to tackle your high-priority tasks while also providing flexibility to accommodate unforeseen changes or delays
Similarly, you should aim to fill 60% (4.75 hours) of tomorrow’s calendar with tasks and meetings, leaving 40% for flexibility and contingency planning. This ensures that you have a clear plan of action for the following day while also allowing room for adjustments based on your progress and priorities.
Finally, you should aim to fill 40% (3.25 hours) of your calendar two to five days out with tasks, leaving 60% for flexibility and long-term planning. This allows you to allocate time for tasks that may not be immediately urgent but are important for achieving your long-term goals, such as strategic planning or professional development.
In addition to following the 80/60/40 rule, it’s also helpful to maintain a list of tasks on deck for flexible utilization. Ideally these are “Time-filler” tasks. These are tasks that can be tackled during downtime or used to fill gaps in your schedule when unexpected changes occur. By keeping a list of tasks on deck, you ensure that your time is always productive and that no opportunity goes to waste.

Deadlines Have Power

One of the most powerful tools for driving action and accountability is the assignment of deadlines. Deadlines create a sense of urgency and momentum, motivating you to prioritize tasks and take action to meet your goals. It’s essential to assign deadlines strategically to ensure that tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.
Even low-priority and time-filler tasks benefit from having deadlines assigned to them. A task with no deadline may never be completed. While these tasks may not be as urgent or important as others, assigning deadlines ensures that they receive the attention they deserve and prevents them from being neglected or forgotten. Additionally, assigning deadlines to low-priority and time-filler tasks helps you manage your workload more effectively by spreading tasks out over time and preventing last-minute rushes. The deadlines on these tasks can be flexible but it’s important that they aren’t continuously “kicked down the road”.
When assigning deadlines, it’s important to be realistic and considerate of your workload and priorities. Avoid overloading yourself with unrealistic deadlines that create unnecessary stress and pressure. Instead, aim to schedule tasks to be completed the week before they are due, allowing for flexibility and buffer time to accommodate unexpected changes or delays.
Mastering productivity and prioritization is a journey of continuous improvement that requires dedication, discipline, and a willingness to adapt. By implementing the strategies outlined in this guide, you can streamline your workflow, conquer your to-do list, and reclaim control over your time. Remember, productivity is not about doing more but doing what truly matters. So, take charge of your time, prioritize wisely, and watch your productivity soar.

Embark on Epic Adventures: Discover High-Definition Handcrafted Dungeons
Thanks to the collective effort of my gaming group, I have brought to life the project of designing and editing rooms and scenarios using meticulously crafted 1x1 tiles. Each tile is imbued with intricate detail and thoughtful design, a testament to our shared dedication and creativity.
Recently inspired by some wise advice, I decided to open a store on Etsy ( https://tilesgames.etsy.com/ ). This newfound venture has fueled my passion for creating packs with diverse terrains and rooms. Currently, I am deeply immersed in developing a new pack focused on desert landscapes, featuring larger and more varied scenarios. Once it is ready, I will share the news in these corners.
At present, I have several packs already crafted, but I have temporarily halted the sale of those printed on 3mm PVC. My full attention is now devoted to the creation of a new, desert-themed pack.

2024.06.09 16:55 mba_dreamer Mould King Death Star Detailed Review

Mould King Death Star Detailed Review
I'm the (fairly) rare person in the lego/lepin community who prefers closed builds with interiors that I can open up. I feel this is not only a more accurate model of real ships but it also add complexity and detail to the build and looks much better.
As such, rather than the lego death star (or copies of it) I decided to buy the Mould King Death Star, which features a fully closed exterior and 3 levels with 15 interior rooms that are accurate to the movies and have play features.
Rooms:
[Bottom Level] Conference Room, Trash Compactor (you can open and close the walls, there is a monster eye and the same rod they used in the movie to bar the walls from closing), Cannon Room (moveable turret that has a mechanism to fire missiles, externally this room is open as a hangar that smaller ships can fly into), Tractor Beam Room (pathways, lever to pull to switch off tractor beam), Empty Room (there is a miniature mouse droid here), Gap/Pit (there is a room that looks like the pit that Luke and Leia swing over)
[Second Level] Storage Room (lots of boxes), Sliding Door Room (whitish room with a door you can slide to get in and out), Elevator Room (no play features but has a panel and a decorative piece for the elevator shaft), Detention Block (contains a large control panel with moveable light above, jail cell with a door that can move to release the prisoner, openable shaft that drops down into the trash compactor room), Death Star Laser Control Room
[Third Level] Empty Room (has a hallway leading out), Communication/Storage Room, Bridge Control (features a circular structure with 6 panels where operators can control the Death Star)
[Exterior] Features the giant laser, a hangar and some tiny star destroyers for scale. Fully openable top and bottom with a larger opening for the Gap room
This set has gotten a bad rap from reviewers online and on youtube, who fault it for instability during and after the build process. However, for me this was not the case at all. If the instructions are followed properly there are absolutely no issues with the build. You build each level separate from the main structure before attaching it, which makes it easy to work on it with a friend (they can build one level while you build the other).
The one difficult part is attaching the bottom level of the Death Star, where it relies on some hard to see/reach pin connections. Additionally, Mould King's sticker names this the "Death Planet" which my inner Star Wars fan screamed angrily about. However, the correct sticker is available for purchase online.
Overall, this is definitely an advanced build that requires alot of time and patience (it took me a month to complete it with 2 hours spent per day), but the results speak for themselves. I highly recommend this set to lepin/lego fans alike!

2024.06.09 16:46 Battlesmith707 Dispossessed Homebrew Archetypes: Warden Prince, Cogsmith, Ranger, Alms Matron

So, having created my Runesmith Archetype as well as a Khazalid Runework mechanic, I'm going to build four more archetypes, each representing an aspect of Duardin society. It is strongly encouraged that you check out my Runesmith archetype, because at least two of these archetypes start with runes.
First we have the Warden Prince - a frontline fighter who also has some room to dabble in leadership or diplomacy skills.
Then there's the Cogsmith - a character with high crafting who is primarily focused on ranged damage using black powder weaponry, but also gets bonuses when operating war machines or artillery.
After that is the Ranger - a versatile class that specializes in stealth and ranged combat, but also has the tools needed to be a decent frontline fighter in a pinch.
Lastly there is the Alms Matron. The Alms Matron is a name I pulled from a novel called Chronicles of the Wanderer. From what I gather they're basically the Priestesses of Valaya. The Alms Matron is primarily a support class who can use Miracles - I've taken a bunch of thematic miracles from Alarielle, Grimnir, and Grungni, and reflavoured them around Valaya. She also has access to a number of skills and talents that may serve the party outside of combat.
All-in-all I feel like I've laid the groundwork to have a relatively balanced well-rounded party consisting of nothing but Dispossessed.
WARDEN PRINCE
Warden Kings are the rulers of the Dispossessed Clans, and like most Kings, they require heirs. A Warden Prince is the son of a Warden King. From a young age they are trained to fight and to lead, with the expectation that their father shall not live forever. However only one of these children - the eldest son - can take their father's throne. Which then raises the question of what the remainder will do. Some serve the new King as generals and advisors, while others are married off to prominent figures within the clan, or to different clans entirely.
Others become Soulbound.
Many young Dispossessed Princes (and Princesses) who find themselves low in the line of succession leap at the chance to join a Binding. It is an opportunity to earn glory for themselves and their clan without forever remaining in the shadow of their older siblings, and it is also a respectable way to avoid being assigned an unwanted marriage. It also provides a chance to travel the Mortal Realms and potentially even explore the lost Karaks - many Soulbound Warden Princes dream of the day they can say they were the first to set foot in their clan's ancestral home in over five centuries.
A Warden Prince is a trained and well-equipped fighter, who due to the length of Duardin lifespans may already have decades of experience under their belt. Not only can they fight, but they can also lead - having been raised with the expectation that they will play a commanding role in either the court or the armies of their father or one of their brothers. It is possible that a Warden Prince may even have experience leading Throngs into battle. Beyond that, Warden Princes are also royalty, which may prove to be a boon when interacting with the aristocracy of other factions. Thus they are a welcome addition to any Binding of Order.
While travelling with the Binding, a Warden Prince may insist that they explore any lost Karaks they discover if it does not interfere with the Binding's other obligations. The Prince may wish to either scout them out for possible reclamation, or recover lost treasures. The Prince may appear enthusiastic about this at first, but once they finally walk the empty halls they may find themselves becoming depressed, melancholy, or even angry as they are struck by the full reality of their people's fall from glory.

The map is neatly folded and stored in a well-crafted airtight case of wood and metal.

COGSMITH
The Ironweld Arsenal - the great union of Duardin and Human Engineering. As Engineers of the Ironweld Arsenal, Cogsmiths are vital to the Cities of Sigmar war machine. Working closely with their human counterparts, they design, build, maintain, and repair the machinery, vehicles, artillery, and firearms wielded by Sigmar's mortal armies.
It is perhaps little surprise then that many Cogsmiths are happy to become Soulbound. An extended lifespan aside and ample opportunity to test out their new inventions aside, they are also well-accustomed to working alongside and learning from other Order factions. The Cogsmiths for their part bring a lot to the table - they are expert tinkerers, able to help repair and even improve the weapons of their Binding. They are well-versed in war machines and vehicles, able to get more out of them than most. A Cogsmith is also a formidable combatant in their own right, possessing experience with a wide array of firearms and war marchines.

Ironweld Engineer
You are a member in good standing of the Ironweld Arsenal. Whenever you are operating a war machine, a vehicle, or a weapon mounted on a vehicle, and you are required to make a Ballistics Skill, you may choose to either gain double dice from your Training in Ballistics Skill or substitute your Crafting Skill instead - whichever one is more likely to yield a better result.
In addition to this, as an Endeavour and with 50D worth of crafting materials you can spend one week tinkering with a handheld non-Aetheric firearm to improve it. With three attempts, if you pass an Extended Crafting Test of DN 5:8, you may apply one of the following upgrades:
  • Improved Sights: When using this firearm, the wielder's accuracy increases by one step.
  • Longer Barrel: The firearm's range is extended by one zone.
  • Double Barrel: The firearm now has a second barrel. When you make an attack with this weapon, you may either treat it as a dual-wielding attack and split your dice pool, or as a single attack that does 2 extra damage. Unfortunately, whatever weapon you apply this to also gains the Reload trait if it does not have it already.
  • Armour-Piercing: The firearm gains the Penetrating Trait.
  • Armour-Breaking: The firearm gains the Rend Trait.
Only two of these upgrades may be active on a weapon at a time. They are not permanent and can be changed.
DISPOSSESSED RANGER
When asked to describe the natural gifts of the Duardin, few would ever think to list stealth as one of them. But it is - if they put their mind to it. Rangers fulfill a vital niche in Duardin armies - that of scouts, skirmishers, infiltrators, and sharpshooters. In the days of the Khazalid Empire, it was the rangers who kept borders clear of Monsters, Greenskins, and Beastmen. It was the rangers who would not only warn settlements of incoming attack, but also harry and harass the foe by any means necessary while the Throngs were mustered. Even today long after the Khazalid Empire's fall, the Dispossessed Clans have find use for rangers. Indeed, it was the rangers who weathered the Fall the easiest, for they were accustomed to wandering without a home.
The life of a Ranger is that of a wanderer and outcast - spending weeks or even months traversing the wilds, and camping under the open stars. The only Duardin who would voluntarily seek out this life are either outcasts or free-spirits, independently-minded with a strong sense of wanderlust. It is a thankless job - their greatest deeds are committed far from any settlement or army, and therefore go unwitnessed. Most Duardin find their lifestyle and tactics disturbing, and thus, treat them with (usually unwaranted) suspicion.
It is little wonder then that a Ranger would be eager to become Soulbound. As a Soulbound, they are more likely to be working with people who have fewer qualms about their tactics, and may even appreciate their skillset. They can spend greater periods of time travelling, being deployed throughout the Mortal Realms in direct service to a higher power, with no obligation of a clan to return to. It is also possible that the Ranger may have a Criminal past they are attempting to escape from. Members of a Binding may also find a Ranger's company preferable to that of other Duardin, for Rangers tend to be less hidebound than most of their Dispossessed kin, while still retaining a strong sense of duty and integrity.

While adventuring in this terrain, you can double the dice you receive from Training in Stealth. As a week-long Endeavour you can spend 50D to change the dye.
ALMS MATRON
Little is known about the Alms Matrons - also known as the Priestesses of Valaya, Duardin Ancestor Goddess of Hearth and Home. The birth rate of Duardin females was already low to begin with, and most Dispossessed Clans are fiercely protective of their women as a result. Even more confounding is the worship of the dead goddess Valaya. Despite all this, Priestesses of Valaya are an integral part of Dispossessed society - primarily serving as healers and mediators. They wield immense influence over the internal politics of their clans.
It is not impossible that, in less hidebound clans, Duardin of other genders may come to serve Valaya in the same capacity. But it would be regarded as unusual.
Valaya's fate remains a mystery. Some say she is dead, others say she is in hiding. Some say she died during the Great Betrayal, others say her death came long before that - possibly during the last days of the World-That-Was. Some say she will return, as the Fyreslayers believe Grimnir will, while others have given up any hope of this. In either case, it takes far more than the death of their God to make a Duardin abandon their faith.
Additional puzzlement comes in the fact that some Alms Matrons have been known to invoke Miracles of their goddess. Scholars can only speculate as to why this is - perhaps it is due to the power of their faith, or maybe Valaya does still exist in some form. Humans and Aelven scholars have also put forward the idea that perhaps Alarielle or Grungni are behind this.
It is exceedingly rare for an Alms Matron to become a Soulbound, primarily because it is difficult to convince a servant of Hearth and Home to leave both of those things behind. But it can happen, especially if there are other Duardin in the Binding or the Binding's goals align with the Clan's. Though not well-suited to direct combat, Alms Matrons can serve their Bindings in other useful ways - as healers, diplomats, scholars, and priests.

Hearth Queen's Balance
Target: 1
Range: Close
Duration: Instant
You can heal the wounds of another by taking on a portion of their suffering. A creature you touch can reduce the severity of one Wound. In exchange, you must take a Minor Wound or increase the severity of a Wound you already have.
Blessing of Valaya
Target: Zone
Range: Long
Duration: Permanent
You infuse the earth with the essence of life, causing plants in an area to grow and bloom. This can be used to bolster crops and revitalise a land tainted by Chaos. You can also choose to shape the growth into simple structures, such as growing winding roots and vines into a ladder or small bridge, or creating cover for you and your allies. In combat, these simple structures can form bridges between Zones, or can be used to give one Zone the Cover Trait
The plants and wildlife created by this Miracle are permanent but will decay naturally if left unattended in an inhospitable environment.
Wrath of the Hearthqueen
Cost: 1 Mettle
Target: Zone
Range: Medium
Duration: Sustained
You fill an area with uncomfortable searing heat, scalding and disorienting any who trespass there. Choose a Zone within Medium Range. That Zone gains the Difficult Terrain and Minor Hazard Traits. Additionally, creatures entering or starting their turn in the Zone must make a DN 6:1 Body (Might) Test or be Restrained until the start of their next turn. When you use this Miracle, you can choose to spend an additional Mettle to increase the Complexity of this Test by 1, to DN 6:2. On your turn, you can spend 1 Mettle as a Free Action to sustain this Miracle.
Heat of the Hearth
Target: Zone
Range: Self
Duration: Instant
A wave of heat washes over your zone, comforting your allies and scalding your foes. Make a 5:1 Soul (Devotion) test.
  • You and your allies within your zone recover one toughness per success.
  • Enemies within your zone suffer one damage per success.
You may spend a mettle to trigger both effets.
Find Strength in Her Absence
Target: 1
Range: Long
Duration: Sustained
Cost: 1 Mettle
Choose an allied target within long range. While the target has no allies in the same Zone, its Melee and Accuracy increase by two steps and it gains +2 Armour. If an ally enters the target’s Zone, this Miracle’s effect is suppressed until the ally leaves the Zone again. On your turn, you can spend 1 Mettle as a Free Action to sustain this Miracle.
Hearth Queen's Endurance
Target: Zone
Range: Self
Duration: Sustained
Make a DN 6:1 Soul (Devotion) Test. Whenever you or your allies within Short Range suffer Damage caused by fire or heat, reduce the Damage by 1 for each success. On your turn, you can spend 1 Mettle as a Free Action to sustain this Miracle.
Cauterise
Target: 1
Range: Close
Duration: Instant
Heat can be used as a tool of healing. Make a DN 4:1 Soul (Devotion) Test as you place a Holy Symbol of Valaya on a wounded ally. They recover Toughness equal to 1 plus the number of successes. When you use this Miracle, you can choose to spend a Mettle to add your Soul to the Toughness recovered.
Comforting Embers
Target: Allies within range
Range: Short
Duration: Sustained
Cost: 1 Mettle
You call forth a rain of glowing embers that fill your allies with warmth and encourage them to press on. When you use this Miracle, allies within range increase their Speed by one step and ignore Difficult Terrain until the beginning of your next turn, though they cannot Flee or Retreat until the Miracle ends. On your turn, you can spend 1 Mettle as a Free Action to sustain this Miracle.

2024.06.09 16:39 Ok_Wolf8950 I just want to sleep in on Sundays (Very Long)

I want to know if I’m justified in being upset or if I am truly being a jerk. I, 33F, have been married to my wife, 33F, for 11 years. I love my wife; I do, but I am so upset and feel like I’m underappreciated. This needs background. I'm sorry for the technical details, but it’s how my brain processes and I believe it is necessary.
I want to preface this by saying that I am nowhere near perfect and have my issues and trauma that I know can make me a little difficult to deal with. I have a lot to work on myself, and I try my best to see my faults and mitigate them before they burden her and others.
Okay, details:
I have a labor-intensive job. I am in middle management now, so I work on the computer a lot, but I also go on the floor to keep my skills sharp and keep in touch with my crew. Computer work is mentally draining as opposed to physically draining, but I also get physically drained. I work 40+ hours a week. My job pays all the bills, living expenses, savings, 401K/retirement and health insurance.
My wife works from home. She has her own business that she loves. She sets her hours, can wake up when she wants, works when she feels like it, and is only bound by the constraints of her own time. (I admit, I’m jealous). Her take-home varies. On a good month, 1/3 of my income. She used to have a “regular” job, but it gave her so much anxiety she was miserable, and we were fine to support ourselves, so she quit and went into her business. I have zero issues when it comes to money. Relationships are partnerships, and I long agreed that I was fine doing the bulk of the money-making labor. I have more of a constitution for these things. I would rather have her be happy than have some extra cash.
We have 3 dogs and no children. Our house is small and doesn’t require much daily up-keep. We have a backyard that the dogs run around in all day; no need to do extra walks unless you want to (really, the backyard is huge). I cook dinner 2-3 times per week. I do the dishes and clean up 2-3 times a week. I do the laundry every other week (it only needs to be done once a week). We do takeaway 1-2 times a week and have at least 1 “do whatever” dinner per week. Obviously, this varies. I don’t mind this. I am an adult; I should do all these things to care for myself and my house. This is called being an adult. I grew up in a house where both parents had 2 jobs; I’ve been cooking and cleaning with my siblings since I can remember.
My Mon-Fri schedule:
4am -Wake up with the dogs
5am – work out (I have to work out for my job, IYKYK), feed the dogs
6am – go to work (work starts at 7am) after letting the dogs back in the bedroom, or they’ll bark all morning and wake up my wife
4pm - off work
430- 5pm – Home
5-530pm – Tues & Thur walk the dogs, M-W-F projects or relax
6pm – Free time (630pm – cook on my days)
7pm – eat dinnerelax
745 pm – prep for my morning (set up coffee, pack lunch, etc.)
8pm – bedtime
Additionally, I am in my Master’s program. During the fall and spring, I do homework or study. This summer, I am studying to take tests to advance my career and working on writing projects in hopes of one day being an author.
Saturday and Sunday are my off days. I wake up on Saturday when the dogs wake up naturally, get them out of the room, outside, fed, and relax on the couch. They are good dogs, mostly chill. I drink coffee and do my writing projects or study for school if needed. Sat, I usually get things done around the house: home improvement, my personal projects, mowing the lawn, cleaning, and fixing anything that needs fixing. There is usually about 5-6 hrs of labor on Saturdays. Sundays, I try my best just to chill.
My wife already has her degree, so she doesn’t go to school and doesn’t know what she wants to do in life, so she doesn’t go after a higher degree even though it would be extremely low cost due to my job offsetting tuition for her (and school is almost free for me). She has hobbies that she loves and creates things for herself, her family and me, which I appreciate. She enjoys baking, which I benefit from. But mainly, and this makes me sound like an ass, she just kind of bee-bops around, hanging out. Her anxiety keeps her from having a job outside the house, keeps her from attacking her business full steam, and keeps her from figuring out what she wants to do for school or life in general. She has mental health care, and she is better than she used to be. I am so proud of her progress. But even the projects she creates for herself, like gardening, she doesn’t attack with gusto. She doesn’t have to garden; she chooses to, and yet the plants are going to shit because she doesn’t go out to weed the garden and prep for planting season. I don't care, I do, but I don't because none of it is necessary. She has the ability to do literally whatever she wants.
Anyway, here’s my current issue:
The dogs sleep in the room, next to my wife’s side of the bed. They sleep all night and hardly ever wake up; they are good dogs. But they do get up around 5-6am on Saturdays, because their natural routine is to wake up with me at 4am M-F. To wake us up, they scratch on the gate that separates their area from the bed and prevents them from jumping on the bed. I’m a light sleeper; they can’t sleep on the bed, or I’ll wake up. On the weekends, I hear them scratching, and I wake up, and my wife stays asleep. I am vigilant about waking up because I don’t want them to suffer needing to go pee, or accidentally pee, or if they are sick and need to puke. I love my dogs; I do my best to care for them. My wife loves them equally, but I don’t think she shares in their morning care equally. Once I’m awake, I’m awake; there’s no going back to sleep for me. I wake up 6 days a week, and she wakes up maybe 1 because even on Sundays, I usually wake up from them scratching, even though she’s right next to them. If I hear them, I’m up. I can’t just wake her up and say, “Hey, the dogs,” because now I’m awake.
If she wakes up early, she’s miserable. She complains for the 30 minutes it takes to get them fed and settled, then she goes right back to sleep on the couch. On the occasion I don’t wake up on a Sunday, I’ll come out of the room around 8-9am, and she’ll be asleep, having been asleep since she took care of the dogs. Then, she’ll take a nap in the middle of the day. (I rarely nap, my issues, not hers.)
Last night, one of our dogs got hot and wanted out of the room; I woke up at 1am and opened the door. We’ve been concerned about the girl dog, so I checked she was okay and laid back down. My wife woke to ensure everything was fine but instantly went back to sleep. I know this because it famously takes me an hour to get back to sleep if I wake up crazy early. Then the dog we worried about cried out loudly (she must have turned wrong in her bed and hit something), so I sprang up to ensure she was okay. This was probably 3am. My wife (who didn’t hear it, only heard me say my dog's name) woke up, checked she was fine, then immediately went back to sleep. Then, of course, 515am rolls around, and the dogs are scratching to get out; they are fully awake. Who has to get up? Me.
I just want one freaking morning to sleep consistently. I want Sunday to rest in my bed and not have to wake up. That’s it! I want to sleep. I understand that my schedule is my schedule; I choose what I do, but I do it to better my life and hers. I work hard all day. I work hard to ensure a good future and keep earning good money. I pursue my passions on the side. I take care of the house, and I fix everything because she “doesn’t know how to do that stuff.” I do all the outside chores; I set up everything for summer, then again for winter, then again for summer, over and over, every year, year after year after year. I go to work day after day after day. I come home, and I do as much as I can. I just want to sleep on Sundays. I've expressed this before, and it'll get better for a month, then return to the same thing.
Set an alarm! Do something! She knows I hate it! She should think that I deserve sleep and actively do something to make sure I get it. It's one day! I keep the dogs quiet M-F in the morning. I actively make sure they don’t disturb her, and I made sure that when they go back in the room at 6am that it doesn’t bother her. She doesn't get out of bed Mon-Fri until 8 or 9am. I know because I see the notification for the backdoor being opened while I'm at work. She doesn't have to get up on Saturdays until 9 or 10am and gets to wake up naturally. Just SET AN ALARM ON SUNDAY. Why would you not think, damn, my wife works her ass off and falls asleep on the couch early most days cause she's so tired? How about I set an alarm on Sunday for 5am so she can get some sleep since she has to go to work Monday! Just something! Please!

2024.06.09 16:06 Expensive-Ad7537 Weighing a “promotion” word problem:

At the end of the month my coworker is leaving. She makes 20 dollars an hour and works 21.5 hours a week. She does not receive any other additional benefits. We live in California. Social security tax is 6.2%. Medicare is 1.45% and federal unemployment tax is .6%.
I make 22 dollars an hour and work 40 hours a week. If instead of hiring a replacement, my boss gives me a 5 dollar raise, how much money is he saving by having one person do the job of two?
Thank you.

2024.06.09 16:03 secure-raspberry-763 How would you feel if your boyfriend (M38) of 9 months purchases a home and says it’s for you (F34)?

My boyfriend of 9 months purchased a home and said he bought it with “me” in mind as we have talked about a future and wanting to have a family. We have had many serious talks about our relationship and we’ve both met each other’s families. He previously lived in a home for several years and has always thought about changing his living situation and also wasn’t sure if he even wanted to stay to live in the same city. To my surprise, he went to see a house without me knowing and put in an offer. Long story short his offer was accepted and he’s made comments about how he thought about this house for us eventually. I’m not sure how to feel about it, I’m really happy that he got a house he really likes and at the price he got it for. But I feel we’re not there yet to move in with each other. Also, in no way did I have a say in the decision of this house or the location so I don’t think him to say he got the house with “me” in mind is fair. He hasn’t considered the commute for me to travel to work or anything that would be considered specifically to actually having me in mind. He bought this home one block away from his previous house as he will be renting out that home now, so this home by default is a great location for him overall. I’m not sure how to feel about his comments and his expectations with me and the house.
Additionally, I am a student and the closing of his house happened to be the very busiest week of exams and assignments I had due. We had conversations about how I could not help him move and there seemed to be an understanding, that week consisted of working on a presentation, studying for an exam and working on a paper. Any other free time I had I invested in self care such as working out or doing yoga. However, on one of those days I posted a selfie where I was proud to have accomplished so much in the morning before going into work and he got extremely upset about this. He went on to say I didn’t care to help him move and that I didn’t want to help him move essentially and made a huge deal about it as he bought this house with “me” in mind. What do you think of this?
Edit to give more context:

UPDATE: How would you feel if your boyfriend (M38) of 9 months purchases a home and says it’s for you (F34)? We Broke Up! May 17, 2024
Original post
https://www.reddit.com/relationship_advice/s/qlMCWJePi8
I realized that when we talked about the reality of me moving in with him, I mentioned that I could sell all my furniture but would want and need to keep my desktop computedesk, his response to me was that he wouldn’t let me have my own room for that and to get a laptop instead. The man has an entire room dedicated to his sneakers. When I also mentioned the commute and how I’d have to pay for parking, as I take the subway to work currently, (not a big deal in comparison to paying for the mortgage, but still an expense) he said there could be days he could drive me, then followed it up with “but you don’t ever drive me to work”.
He did not buy the house with “me” in mind at all. It’s clear that this is HIS house and he wasn’t going to share his space in any other way besides how he wanted it.
We had plans for me to come over on a specific day but had also fought. I admitted and apologized that I could have put my anger aside and came to help. However, I wanted reassurance that he understood that if I have my own priorities and we discussed this, he cannot throw it in my face and tell me I did not meet his needs. I’m not saying of course that in any in case I would not drop something for my partner in an emergency. I did not feel that he understood this. And when I tried to explain this he said that I was “retracting my apology”..I just kept feeling constantly misunderstood and having to defend myself in this relationship with other issues as well. That was the end of that. Better to cut it off sooner than later and before taking the relationship to the next level of commitment. It definitely sucks.
AND I showed him this thread in which he of course was upset, says he felt betrayed. He called me “entitled” as he thinks I am saying I he bought it FOR me, which I am not in any way. He’s missing the point for this post in which I think he doesn’t want to take accountability for not acknowledging he was wrong for throwing it in my face. The main point was guilt tripping and using the “I bought it with you in mind” response. Because clearly, even if the commute was not in mind (currently, I live in an expensive area so to not buy a house here is a valid point), the ability to actually live with him was not with me in mind! He really absolutely did not care about me as a person and my needs or even can understand what a real relationship is. He skimmed through all 565 comments and screenshotted the best ones that validated him and sent them to me to prove, he’s a “good guy”.
MY SIDE: My ex ( 36 not 34F) made a post saying I ( 42/M) told her I bought her house and has blocked me from commenting. How about I share some context? May 18th, 2024
u/RhinoRev40
Her post: https://www.reddit.com/relationship_advice/s/ooTwyFNwWk She only showed me this a few days ago, but for the past couple of weeks my now ex gf has been curating the truth to extract as much validation as she can from this situation, and has prevented me from commenting or sharing my side.
She admits that I actually said - that I bought a house with us in mind. I did say that. When i first met her, I was moving away to LA. I had already lived in a home that was paid off for 12 years, but when i met her; i decided that maybe it's best and continue to build a life here, and should things work out, we could figure out a future together.
I had been looking at the market and one day, an amazing house came on the block, for 300k less than it was a months ago. I pounced and went to see it. That night i told her i saw a place, i even sent her the photos and said, i'm going to place an offer, which i did.
She seemed to love the place and see how much of an upgrade it would be from my current place - this is a 2M house, with 4 bathrooms, 3 bedrooms, 2 living rooms and most importantly, a garage as my cars kept getting stolen since i didn't have one at my current place.
There was never mention of us moving in together right away, at the time we were together for 6 months, wayyyy too soon. We weren't even saying "i love you yet" - and i did say that once actually, and she just didn't return it anyways.
That being said, since we spend 95%% of our time sleeping at my place when we see each other once a week, figure this would be good for us, and when it is time, we could move in together there and go from there.
She loved the place, from what she said, this was supposed to be a positive.
Now let's rewind though.
3 months into the relationship, she asked to borrow 4000$. I was not comfortable with it, but as usual, she made herself seem so much in need, that I couldn't say no and just break up with her there, but now I realize i should have. She guilted me sayinf that couples have to work together and be there for each other and all that jazz.
The fact is, within those first 3 months, i had brought her to LA while i had to be there on business and the total cost of the week that she was there was around 3K. Then, over xmas, we went to another city, another 2-3K, as well as a punta cana vacation for 7K. So after all that is when she decided to ask me, and you don't need to be a genius to realize thst she chose me because clearly, she pinned me as having the money to.
Had this been my wife or long term gf, this wouldn't of been an issue, but 3 months in - this was a big flag and i talked to her about it. As usual, and as a pattern throughout this relationship, she would get extremely angry, lose her cool and make me feel bad for "questioning her character".
So, fast forward to me actually moving into this house over a 3 week period. She helped none whatsoever, never offered and my own family, friends, and people who were working at the house asked me about it apl the time. Oh she has school, oh she texts me though and so on. Completely MIA until of course friday or saturday night where she wanted to go for dinners or go to shows - that we did, of course.
One day, once her exams had tailed down and she told me she was waking up early to write a photo, i saw that she posted a sunshine kissed selfie saying: yoga! Meal prep! Coffee! Sunshine!
And i wrote her privately: " you know, i feel you could have at least offered to help in some way today". Again, she loses it, tells me : " you know you don't have to tell me something just because it bothers you" and then eventually she says, and i will never forget this ever : " don't you think you're expecting a little much of me for 7/8 months of dating"?
I was shocked. For some reason, pressuring your bf for a 4000$ loan 3 months in, but offering help in any way over a 3 week period is too much.
I called it off, decided i don't need her and this relationship wouldn't work with this set of values we don't share.
A couple of days later, after trying whatever she could to flip this whole fight on me, constantly chaging the goal post as a pattern i had identified and made her aware of repeatedly over those 7/8 months, she eventually showed up unannounced, apologizing profusely, and apparently seeming to genuinely recognize that it wasn't right, and she could have offered.
I took some of the responsibility once she did, and said that maybe, i could have been more direct as to when and how.
We resolved, we started to laugh again, this was a fight that we would "learn from" we both said.
Well, last week we disagreed for another simple issue, and she blew up as she does, yelling, calling my life chaotic, calling me eveything she can think of, and then says she resents me for wanting her to help with the house when she had exams!
Basically she took back the apology fully and stormed out of the house, i did not chase her. I did not text her, and i did not want to negotiate at all anymore.
The next morning she said she acted like that because i told her she was fucked. Tbh, i don't remember saying that, but i probably did as she was having a massive blow up.
I apologized for saying that she is fucked because afterall, whatever i do is in my control and tried my very best to get her to see that blowing up like that, is her behavior to be accountable for.
That's when she shared the original thread... again - no words, shocked that for a couple of weeks in the background she had been farming all these comments about me, sharing our personal stuff and curating it in a way to make herself look like, you guessed it, a "victim" whose boyfriend "bought her a house"?
We met off hinge. She asked to borrow 3K from me 3 months in, and I told her since then that it just didn't look good at all, and I'd hate to have something like that i couldn't even share with my friends / family.
The facts are that she only shared as the relationship went on:

Overall, yes i had reason to play it slow with her. I didn't want her moving in on a technicality, or making me responsible for all her bills or getting trapped if things didn't work out.
I didn't buy her a house, i bought my house, in cash, paid in full and she was well aware that.
I bought a house because I had settling down in my current city in mind after meeting and had hoped it would work out.
But here she is complaining about if she would have an office in it, for...nursing?
A shoe room? I have 25 pairs of shoes in a closet. The spare bedroom would be for a baby's room, possibily if my future half is comfortable with that. Discussions would be had but i realized that discussions would never be had with her.
She has rage in her mind, a wild sense of entitlement and at present time is currently getting evicted from her apartment, and has no full time job but all the time in the world to make reddit posts for validation.
This problem is solved, she is not going to move in, and i am accountable for my house and hope she becomes accountable for "her house".
I welcome any comments / questions but i know I was dealing with a highly problematic person who will never truly realize her ways.
I am not the original poster. Please don't contact or comment on linked posts

The Significance of Diet and Fasting in Longevity: Insights from Valter Longo and Recent Research
The quest for longevity has fascinated humanity for centuries, with diet and lifestyle habits being at the forefront of this pursuit. Valter Longo, a prominent figure in the study of longevity, has contributed significantly to our understanding of how dietary patterns influence lifespan. With a career spanning over three decades, Longo's insights into the role of diet, particularly the Mediterranean diet and fasting, offer invaluable guidance on enhancing health and longevity. This article explores the profound impact of diet and fasting on longevity, drawing upon Longo's research and recent scientific findings.

Valter Longo's Perspective on Longevity and Diet

Valter Longo, the director of the Longevity Institute of the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California-Los Angeles and the Longevity and Cancer Laboratory at the IFOM Institute of Molecular Oncology in Milan, Italy, emphasizes the critical role of diet in longevity. Longo, who adheres to a Mediterranean diet, highlights the benefits of this dietary pattern in reducing the risks of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, Longo advocates for the fasting-mimicking diet, recommending a daily 12-hour fasting period to align with the body's natural rhythms. Despite the potential health benefits of having smaller dinner portions earlier in the evening, Longo opts for a substantial dinner at a later time, citing personal convenience and minimal negative impacts on overall health. This decision underscores the importance of balance and personal adaptation in dietary habits for longevity. (MSN)

Scientific Endorsement of Fasting and Meal Timing

Recent research supports Longo's stance on the importance of fasting and meal timing in health and longevity. A randomized controlled trial explored the effects of intermittent fasting plus early time-restricted eating (iTRE) versus calorie restriction in adults at risk of type 2 diabetes. The iTRE approach, which involves consuming 30% of energy requirements before noon followed by a 20-hour fasting period on selected days, showed significant improvements in glucose metabolism compared to calorie restriction alone. These findings highlight the potential of combining intermittent fasting with meal timing to enhance health outcomes. Additionally, a systematic review on intermittent fasting in breast cancer patients revealed that fasting could alleviate chemotherapy-induced side effects and improve quality of life during treatment, although more research is needed to understand its impact on tumor recurrence and overall survival. (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-023-02287-7).
The metabolic benefits of fasting extend beyond glucose regulation and cancer therapy support. A study investigating the impact of prolonged fasting on energy metabolism in healthy males found that extended fasting periods significantly increase fat oxidation while reducing carbohydrate oxidation. These metabolic shifts indicate the body's adaptation to fasting, favoring fat as a primary energy source and potentially contributing to improved metabolic health. These findings align with Longo's recommendations for fasting and further emphasize the role of dietary patterns in modulating energy metabolism and promoting longevity. Fasting in the Context of Cancer Therapy: Alleviating Side Effects and Enhancing Quality of Life

The exploration of fasting as an adjunct to cancer therapy has opened new avenues for enhancing the quality of life and potentially improving outcomes for patients undergoing treatment. In the rigorous battle against cancer, traditional treatments such as chemotherapy are often accompanied by severe side effects, including nausea, fatigue, and increased risk of infection, which can significantly impair a patient's quality of life. The systematic review on intermittent fasting in breast cancer patients provides a compelling argument for the inclusion of fasting protocols in the treatment regimen. Fasting has been shown to be feasible and safe for patients, with the potential to alleviate chemotherapy-induced adverse effects. Specifically, intermittent fasting has been associated with reduced chemotherapy toxicity, as evidenced by markers of DNA and leukocyte damage, suggesting a protective effect on healthy cells while still allowing chemotherapy to target cancer cells effectively.
Moreover, intermittent fasting during chemotherapy has been reported to improve patients' quality of life by reducing the severity of fatigue, nausea, and headaches, which are common side effects of cancer treatments. These improvements are thought to be mediated through various mechanisms, including the reduction of chemotherapy-induced DNA damage and the optimization of glycemic regulation. By improving serum glucose, insulin, and IGF-1 concentrations, fasting not only supports the body's metabolic health but also enhances the overall well-being of patients undergoing the stress of chemotherapy. Furthermore, the potential for fasting to impact the efficacy of chemotherapy positively, by sensitizing cancer cells to treatment while protecting normal cells, offers a promising area for further research. These findings underscore the importance of considering dietary interventions, such as intermittent fasting, as part of a comprehensive approach to cancer care, aiming to not only target the disease itself but also to improve the treatment experience and quality of life for patients.
