2024.05.16 23:11 the-uint_8t New macbook user : frustrating issues

I'm new to apple eco system and two months ago I got my first ever MacBook pro m3 max 64GB RAM. I'm using latest OS Version. I'm coming from Windows and Linux(Ubuntu and Manjaro) and normally a power user of OS.
Now it comes to MacOS, the UI looks good, no doubt in that but it has unlimited issues. I'm listing them below as they were mostly unheard of even in Ubuntu.
-Microphone stops working time to time and no it's not a hardware issue because it starts working when I run sudo ps auxc grep audio awk {'print $2'} xargs sudo kill
-Safari doesn't play any videos most of the time, YouTube videos just don't play. On chrome , everything works normal.
-Swiping between desktops feels sluggish.
-Opening a new window of app on desktop 1,opens it randomly on desktop 3 or some random desktop.
-Chrome scrolling feels heavy like it's not using GPU.
-Command+s stopped working randomly while all other shortcuts work. I can't save files because cmd+s is not working. I have to go to the file menu and click save. It's just not working anywhere.
-Most of these issues go away when I restart the machine but they again comes back after sometime.
-Apple support is worst, they have a scripted response for every issue. For example, for the microphone issue, they wanted me to reboot the machine, then reboot in safe boot mode and test mic and finally just reinstall the OS. And they do that for every issue I throw at them. They have no idea how to fix stuff.
I sometimes wonder why can't apple fix these issues? They are making me frustrated.

2024.05.16 22:46 Ravioli_868 iPad vs MacBook - Apple’s quandary

Does anyone share a similar opinion that Apple is currently (now more than ever) in a state of uncertainty as to what to do with the iPad, in that on one hand they have given the iPad the power (M2, M4 etc) to handle numerous productivity tasks (like a laptop) but they have to limit the use case of the iPad going forward. Should they give iPadOS that freedom, it will increase the amt of persons using iPads as basic laptops and also decrease the amt of MacBooks being sold.
To me it seems that they know the iPads are a safe but stagnant market but the only way to release a new iPad is to make easy aesthetic changes (new screen, thinner size etc) and increased computing power.
Not sure what the future holds for iPads at this time. Thoughts? I know this isn’t a new topic but some discussions on it are always welcomed!

2024.05.16 22:45 ZombieSlapper23 Sling in Backpack vs One Bag?

Does anyone put their sling into a backpack? If so, what is the experience like and would you recommend it? If not, do you take your backpack everywhere?
The backpack I want would only be for “writing” and would carry a 14” MacBook, an A5 notebook, and an 18 oz Yeti rambler. I’m worried that carrying even a small backpack would look out of place when dining out with my family, even after removing my MacBook and Yeti rambler to solely carry my edc (think morning breakfast at a Cracker Barrel).
So that’s why I’m considering using a sling to put my edc instead so that it is less noticeable when dining out. Then, I could just throw the sling in the backpack when wanting to take my laptop somewhere.
Here is my edc:
The backpack I’m considering is either an Evergoods CPL 16 or Aer Tech Pack 3.
I have no idea what sling to get or if the experience of putting my sling in my backpack and digging for my keys each time would be a horrible experience. Tell me what to do Uncle Iroh, you’re my only hope.

2024.05.16 22:41 cgleachy Laptop for my Luddite of a Father

Hi, I’m the family tech support. My dad is not tech savvy. At all. In fact he has an uncanny ability to ruin any laptop given to him (not mechanically but software wise). He allows every notification, will open any link, and just generally clog his laptop up with shite. Hence why MacOS may be better, I don’t know. In my experience it’s harder to slow down.
He previously had a MacBook Pro 2016 which lasted 4 years before dying. His 21 XPS15 just died which does not surprise me at all. For the past year that thing has sounded like a jet takin off at idle.
He does photo editing so needs a good screen. We’ve got a good budget of ~1500 usd although the less the better ofc. What laptop is most idiot-proof whilst still having a good screen and decent specs.
Thank you for any suggestions.

2024.05.16 22:37 Buckwheat469 Is it possible to install Linux (like Asahi Linux) on a Macbook Pro without being able to log into the Mac?

I have a Macbook Pro that I'd like to reformat with Linux, specifically one that works with Apple Silicon. The problem that I have is that I can't log into the laptop anymore and don't have the recovery code.
Questions:
I realize that this is more of an Apple question, but because it involves Linux and various boot options I figured /computers was more appropriate for its wealth of knowledge.

2024.05.16 22:32 Shoddy_Carpenter3965 MacBook for law degree?

So I’m looking at getting a laptop for university and I think I’ve settled on a MacBook Air due to many good reviews and the longevity, I was looking at the M2 but was curious as to whether the base level for RAM would be fine? I’d mainly be using it for notetaking essay writing and streaming videos etc whilst at university but was hoping for it to continue afterwards, the 8 up to 16Gb ram upgrade is £200 so wanted to know if experienced users thought it would be worth it. Also if it matter my only experience with laptops has been mainly Chromebooks which I’ve found to be rubbish but not a massive fan of windows

2024.05.16 22:32 Lopsided_Outcome_993 Purchasing Mac-Advice Needed

This will be fun because I know nothing about computers, literally nothing at all! I am getting $800 from my company to purchase any computer I'd like (I am willing to spend money out of pocket to make up the difference) and I want to make the switch from Windows to OS to keep everything within the same system (I've always had an iPhone but have only ever used Windows with computers). I currently have a Lenovo Legion 81Y6 (Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10750H CPU @ 2.60GHz, 2592 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s)... not sure what other info would be helpful here). I plan on keeping this laptop and just using the Mac for connecting my phone and for work. My current laptop has 500GB of storage and I'm almost maxing it out because it's storing video games as well as personal/work files. I'm in business administration/finance so the majority of my work is downloading/transferring files, using various softwares, etc., nothing too taxing.
What I need help with is deciding on Air vs. Pro and the make, model, and storage. So... I need help with everything. I use two external monitors so I would like to have the option to plug directly into the computer which I've read is not a universal feature. I'd also like to be able to work outside if possible, so whatever nits are will be a component. I've primarily been looking on Apple's website at their refurbished products and on BackMarket (I've used their refurbished products before and have always had a great experience). Literally any advice whatsoever would be appreciated!

2024.05.16 22:18 kungfuenglish Zephyrus G16 vs Yoga Pro 9i vs other?

Trying to figure a new laptop. I think I have it down to the Yoga Pro 9i vs the G16. Both have nice screens and the core ultra processor for more efficiency. I want something I'm not tethered to the wall when going to work or going to a meeting at another office and I can just pull it out and use it without power for a while. Light weight is key, both seem adequate there. And I do play some games. Whether overnight or on travel. Nothing crazy right now but I want the capability.
The G16 would be fine at 1700 but only 16 gb ram. I could push up to the $2900 model with 32 gb and a 4080 but that's a lot more money. The yoga has a smaller battery though 84 Whr vs 90 Whr but not sure if it'll make a difference. But the G16 seems to run less power draw through the processor maybe. Screen is brighter? But mini-LED is wonky with HDR I hear?
I'm probably missing more too. I have 16 gb RAM on my alienware right now and it's adequate, but not sure how limiting that will be going forward for another 5 ish year use period?

2024.05.16 22:13 codyhcampbell I'm interested in learning about creating/deploying images

Hi everyone-
I have a handful of older Windows 10 laptops and a couple old Mac Minis and I wanted to get some experience with creating and deploying images. I don't have a specific use-case nor am I passing the machines off to anyone, but it's more of just getting the practice.
Skill-wise, I'm IT-adjacent (deal with computes in an enterprise environment, but not IT and am basically inventory and like a pre-help desk with no admin rights). The machines i'd be working on are in my own possession, not related to my job. Maybe one day I'll try to move into something more dedicated, but this seems like a good skill to have, even though I'm working more with tracking inventory, connecting peripherals (like photo cameras, etc).
Does anyone have any tools they can recommend for creating and then deploying an image for Windows 10 and older macs (I just got the old machines so I'm unsure of what OS version). Even though I'm only deploying a couple, the idea is to do it as if I was going to scale it up to dozens of identical/near identical machines.
Ideally looking for tools/methods that are free, have a free trial, or are super cheap, as I'm just doing this on the side. Also no urgency here as there's no use-case aside from learning the process itself.
Even if you can't answer directly, I'd love to hear any stories/advice/warnings etc. Appreciate whatever you can give me!

2024.05.16 22:10 wickedilluminations I'm losing my insanity!

first let me start by saying I'm not tech savvy but I need opinions and suggestions on what to do! I apologize in advance but I'm under an extreme amount of stress and don't want to leave any detail out.
I have been using my MacBook pro m1 for a couple of years without issue. my MacBook started acting up about a month ago. I could not purchase apps in the store so I called apple support. We spent 3 hours on the phone working with it. first they had me update, which i was hesitant (eventually agreed) but that didn't solve the issue. then they concluded family share was the problem. after fixing the family share everything worked and I thought my problem was solved; unfortunately that was the last time it operated properly.
over the next several weeks my Mac seemed slow and I had problems with things, I figured it was user error since I had updated to macos 14.1.1. then "mo" from a large trusted legal firm emailed me a pdf, I downloaded it and attempted to open but pdf expert wouldn't open it and said it was "corrupt". one of "mo's" colleague "jo" emailed me a link to download Corp documents. the link directed me to the firm's website where I had to put my email address and name in order to login. after I logged in I clicked select all and downloaded them. they download in a .zip format but my Mac couldn't/ wouldn't unzip of open them so I downloaded them individually. after this I emailed "mo" to inform her the pdf was corrupt but she didn't seem concerned so I didn't worry.
2 days ago "jo" and I had discussed scheduling a call at 4, I confirmed I would be available and waited for her to call but it never came. the next morning i sent an email asking if she forgot about me but she denied that I had confirmed my appointment. I knew I had confirmed but figured I responded to the wrong person. I set with my Mac in front of me and my email open awaiting her reply but 2 hours later i hadn't received email from anyone so I refreshed my the mail app. when I done this i saw the only email I had received was from "mo" so I open and read it. after reading it I closed it and once I did "Jo" email arrived suggesting a call at 12 but it was 12:51 when i received it. this was my first indication something was majorly wrong.. I called apple support for help
Well here is the start to my nightmare. first apple's automated system couldn't verify my account but when I got to a representative he went ahead a began a screenshare and started working on my issues. we started checking the settings and my settings were changed. I never backup to a cloud (I know it's risk but I'm too scared of identity theft) but my mac was backing somethings up anyways. then he instructed that I sync my mail (I hadn't received over 3k emails) and change my password. I changed my password an was able to start making purchases again. next I noticed my notes were missing bit he couldn't resolve this problem and transfered me to a senior advisor. the senior advisor wanted to start screenshare. as he attempted to screenshare he reminded me that the sharing would be paused on sensitive information. next he informed me that we couldn't share screens that there were issues in his system. as we walked through the process of removing my notes alarm bells began to go off in my head. the previous rep had me change passwords but didn't pause screen share, which I informed my advisor but he didn't seem concerned. then i was put on a brief hold. as I was on hold I took that opportunity to change my password again. when he came back on the line I asked if he would attempt a screenshare again and it worked. he helped me check out various settings and we found they had been changed, at this point I began to worry I had a virus. he suggested I download a virus software outside of the app store. this made me uncomfortable so i requested to schedule/scheduled with the genius bar for this evening. I closed my Mac and went on about my evening.
this morning I found out about the newest apple security breach,, which kicked my anxiety into over drive. from what I read my computer had similar issues and the list was growing so I contacted support again. today once again I couldn't be verified and I wasn't receiving notifications from Apple again. the automated system automatically transferred me to a senior advisor. I thought this was weird but they assured me this was normal! anyhow I explained what was going on and she wanted to go over my settings again. we began to screen share and checked my settings, again they were different. then she said I need to see if you are completely logged in and had me open the privacy and security tab. next she instructed me to click on 2 factor authentication; followed by get a verification code. I didn't know any better so I clicked it. the next box showed a code then told me not to share the code with anyone including Apple. we were screensharing she saw it! I was so upset and asked her why she had me click that why we were screensharing...she claimed she didn't see anything it was lagging but I don't believe that! she the stated the code would change each time anyhow! at this point I'm in panic mode so disconnected the call, screenshare and tried to change my password. this time when I went to change my password I put the old and new password in and proceeded to the next step but the pop up looked entirely different. the only thing I knew to do was take my computer completely off line until I can get so help.

2024.05.16 21:57 TomorrowSalty3187 Got a new M3 Mac Air. Trying to upgrade my setup. Please help.

I work from home so my work computer is a Windows Dell Laptop. The dock is a Dell D6000 and I have two Dell P2419h monitors.
So I can currently plug the dock to my Mac M3 and use the DisplayLInk Manager but the problem is sometimes I need to restart my Mac in order for it to recognize the dock.
I was thinking on getting a new dock that will work with Windows and Mac and the dual monitors.
Any recommendations?

2024.05.16 21:50 digikar Cheapest M1 Mac for Software Development / Porting

Hello, I have a couple of softwares developed on amd64 Linux. Some users/co-developers have expressed their desire for the software to be ported to M1 Macs and their successors. I figured a VPS - or some cloud computer - might be the way to go.
I would probably require the M1 Mac for about 20-30 hours a month. And that too only some of the months of the year. 8GB RAM seems sufficient. What would be my most affordable options?
I've tried HostMyApple before and found it reasonable, but their M1 Mac plans start at 70 USD per month, which seems a bit too costly and wasteful for my use. Amazon EC2 on-demand plans are another alternative. Could anyone recommend other reasonable alternatives?

2024.05.16 21:48 jeshuah9344 I am thinking about switching my desktop for a laptop, or upgrade my desktop. Help is appreciated

Hello, so I have Desktop pc that has been an awesome powerhouse for my multimedia projects. Premiere, After Effects, a bit of 3D, Ableton Live 12, lots of gaming (currently Helldivers 2). i7 5820k, ASUS SABERTOOTH X99, Corsair Vengeance 32 gb ddr4, Radeon 580 8 gb.
Since I work with lots of big files, I have 4 Hard drives (1 Nvme as C drive, 2 SSDs, and 1 HDD in my desktop + external backups etc).
Currently everything is running bottomline "Fine", but Visuals in gaming, and performance while working in after effects, and ableton live sometimes its messing up my workflow.
  1. Since I work from home, I've been attracted to the idea to get a good laptop that can handle all my project needs and move around the country or so. But I don't have THAT kind of budget to say "Fuck it Ill buy a top of the line 3k laptop. Plus, I don't know how to handle the hard drive part of it...
  2. Since amazon in my country is currently having good promos in pc parts, I was also considering, upgrading to a better GPU, or more ram... or if it is totally worth it, replace the Mobo and Ram. But its all getting a bit out of hand and I am not sure how to proceed.
Any tips on any of the things mentioned would help a lot.
As a sidenote, 12 years ago I got all my saving in a 2012 maxed out pre retina Macbook Pro, 12 months and 3 weeks later the motherboard had a problem and apple said they couldn't do anything since the warranty was over, and I was not going to spent ~1000 dollars to change it. It stopped being that good. 2 years later I got this Cyberpower PC build and in 2017 I updated the MoBo, ram, and CPU.

2024.05.16 21:47 optimuspoopprime Windows laptop or iPad air/pro for mixing/dable into producing?

I recently bought my wife a new HP laptop just so she could mix music on her free time since her MacBook pro was showing it's age. She uses serato (with her pioneer deck). She also wants to dabble into producing for fun via Ableton and other similar software. Since she doesn't use computers much outside of work, didn't make sense to buy a MacBook for that.
Well now that I have a galaxy Tab S9+, I finding myself without my tablet Alot as she will hijack it from me so she can draw/color since she finds it fun as a stress reliever when she isn't busy.
Now I'm thinking of returning the HP laptop I just got and getting her a iPad aipro so she can use that to draw/color and maybe mix/make music. I know since iPads use app and not full macOS programs that she would be limited on the software types as it seems like the app versions seems limited on what they can do. But curious if anyone is getting by just using a iPad to do those things.
This is for someone who's doing this for fun and nothing serious (like try to make a career out of it). Would she be able to get her fix with just a iPad?

2024.05.16 21:42 manchesterraverULTRA logic Ninjas - is this normal?

Logic inaccurate Dials
^ video of the issue,
synopsis for anyone who does not want to play a vide;
I have manually started using decay time calculators for all aspects of music while i memorise it all and at 125 bpm all the values for attack and release are in derivatives 30,60,120,240 for different values at that bpm.
but when I input 60 into the compressor for a 32 note into the attack knob OR ANY STOCK PLUGINS , it jumps 0.3 either side,
so I WANT 60MS
and it gives me only 59 or 56,
no 60,
and 53 or 56, not 54 or 55
please can someone guide me to the fix for getting full granularity of these dials please. Ive just reaset all settings and this changed nothing , I than tried on my mac pro, (I havee m1 max laptop running in apple silicon native and do not have rosetta installed)
and its behaving the same.
fabfilter or any third party plug don't act like this.
so im assuming its a setting, cheers ninjas !!!!!
holded shift. no change,
holding option it then jumps in incrment of set 10s, so 100, 110,120,

2024.05.16 21:41 craigster222 Newhouse - laptops?

Starting at Newhouse this fall; not sure my focus but I expect to do some work in video editing/production.
The tech requirements page at isn’t very specific.
Have others found a need for a beefier laptop like the MacBook Pro?
Or is it really just anything with 32GB RAM and then preference and budget?
