[TOMT] [Game] [2010s] A Point and Click Mystery Game

2024.06.09 10:17 Flat_Cakes [TOMT] [Game] [2010s] A Point and Click Mystery Game

Hi! I remember a game I used to play on my mom's work computer whenever she takes me to her office. It revolves around a journalist as she writes about the history of a manor for her paper. As she arrives there, she soon discovers ghosts in the manor with unfinished business and it's her job to help them move on.
One of the main ghosts she encounters is of the lady/daughter of the family in the manor. She was in love with the family's portrait painter but she had an arranged marriage. The game also involves restoring paintings and finding art materials.
I played it around 2013-2016. It was a point and click mystery game but it isn't horror themed at all. It had a painterly art syle and vibrant color scheme. The manor itself and the ghosts had a Victorian vibe to it. One of the characters was named Joseph and I think the lady was named Elizabeth.
Any leads would be much appreciated! Thank you!

2024.06.08 22:31 GarnetGrapes These are the bird flu questions that influenza and animal scientists desperately want answered

Helen Branswell, STAT News, paywall-free link: https://archive.ph/dSGsG
"Ten weeks after government scientists discovered that H5N1 bird flu was sickening dairy cattle in the United States, many of the mysteries surrounding what is happening on affected farms remain just that.
Widespread reluctance on the part of farmers to allow scientists — government or otherwise — onto their premises to study spread of the virus among infected cows has created a frustrating lack of understanding of the dynamics of this outbreak. U.S. Department of Agriculture incentives aimed at getting farmers to test their cows and take preventive measures to protect both animals and farmworkers do not seem to have solved the impasse, even as the outbreak has affected 82 herds in nine states.
It’s not lost on many scientists, here and abroad, that the paucity of data coming out of the U.S. is not dissimilar to the limited information flow out of China in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic — a situation the U.S and other governments complained about loudly at the time. With the shoe on the other foot, however, there is no overt effort to make farmers cooperate.
“A lot of criticism was leveled at China for their early response to Covid-19 — some of it reasonable, a lot of it extremely ignorant. Are we currently making some of those mistakes ourselves?” wondered Kristian Andersen, an evolutionary biologist and a professor of immunology and microbiology at Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif.
Investigating outbreaks always takes time. But it is startling this far into this situation that so many questions appear to be no closer to answers.

Related: A third U.S. farmworker infected with bird flu is the first to experience respiratory symptoms

To get a sense of what the key questions are, STAT asked scientists who have long worked on influenza or in veterinary medicine what they viewed as the most pressing questions. Sixteen answered individually; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention answered collectively for three flu experts within its ranks whose opinions we sought.
The answers — their questions — roughly fit into three buckets: What’s happening on the farms among cows? What’s happening on farms among farmworkers? What’s happening to the virus and what does this all portend for H5N1, which for nearly three decades has danced around humans but has yet to take us on directly.

The biggest bucket: What is happening with the cows?

Ron Fouchier, a flu virologist at Erasmus Medical Center in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, summed up what underlies all of the cow-related questions with the single question he submitted. It was, effectively: How can spread in cows be stopped, and the sooner the better?
“If this virus becomes enzootic” — endemic or entrenched — “in cows, it could well cause massive damage to human and animal health in the longer term,” Fouchier wrote. “I would find it unacceptable if authorities in the U.S.A. and/or the sector do not try to eradicate this new disease in cows a.s.a.p. If this is not deemed possible, I think the entire world would like to see the evidence and arguments.”
Isabella Eckerle, a virologist at the Geneva Centre for Emerging Viral Diseases, expressed a similarly overarching sentiment. “What is the plan of farmers and health authorities to get rid of this virus in the cow population to prevent further spread and mutation, or worse, major spillover to humans?”
Figuring out how to stop the spread of the virus in U.S. cattle herds requires far more information than exists in the public domain, however. Many of the experts we asked said what’s known about how the virus is spreading among cows cannot be the whole story.

Cow udders appear to be exquisitely sensitive to this virus; when dairy cattle are infected, their milk production decreases markedly and the milk they do produce is altered in color and viscosity. Milk from infected animals contains surprisingly high levels of virus. It’s believed that milking machines, which are not cleaned after each cow is milked, have been spreading the virus from infected to uninfected animals.
But some cows reportedly have mild respiratory symptoms and nasal discharge, raising questions about whether cows are also spreading the virus more in the way humans spread flu.
“There is a consensus building that this is most likely mechanical transmission through milking but I don’t think that answers a lot of questions/explains some of the weirdness,” said Thomas Peacock, an influenza virologist at the Pirbright Institute, a British organization that focuses on controlling viral illnesses in animals. “I don’t understand how if the virus is only transmitting through milk machines it got back into poultry (or alpacas!).
”While it is believed that this outbreak was caused by a single “spillover” event, when H5N1-infected wild birds somehow passed the virus to a cow or cows, the virus that has been spreading in cows has since spilled back into wild birds. Farm cats, domestic poultry, the odd carnivore species, and a herd of alpacas in Idaho have also been infected with this strain of the virus. Six of 18 alpacas in the herd became infected; three that were pregnant had spontaneous abortions.
There have also been three mild human infections associated with this outbreak; all have been in farmworkers.

Related: USDA faulted for disclosing scant information about outbreaks of H5N1 avian flu in cattle

Martin Beer, director of the Institute of Diagnostic Virology at the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut in Riems, Germany, lists a number of data points scientists need to know to try to figure out how to stop this outbreak. The number of cows in a herd that have been infected, which could be determined by looking for antibodies in their blood. The percentage of animals that shed virus — in other words, the portion that are infectious. Whether they emit virus from their muzzles or in their feces. How much virus is shed via those routes as compared to what is seen in milk?
Scott Hensley, a professor of microbiology at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine who is working on an H5N1 vaccine, has a trio of intertwined questions. Do cows that are infected but have no symptoms emit virus? Would quarantining infected cows stop spread within a herd? And how long are infected cows infectious? “It will be easier to control this virus if the infectious period is short. But this might not be the case,” Hensley noted.
Colleen Webb agreed that the specifics of spread in cattle need to be elucidated. “We know the basic epidemiological information for other avian influenza hosts, but not dairy cattle, and dairy cattle are different enough from these other hosts that we need dairy cattle-specific information,” said Webb, dean of the graduate school at Colorado State University, whose research focuses on data-driven modeling of disease and evaluation of preparedness and control strategies in livestock diseases.
Lots of data from a number of affected farms would answer these questions. In the absence of it, experimental infections of cows in laboratories can start to generate crucial information. Jürgen Richt, a veterinarian and director of the Center of Excellence for Emerging and Zoonotic Animal Diseases at Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, is currently doing just this type of research. So is Beer.
Florian Krammer, a flu virologist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York, thinks it’s important to find out whether vaccinating cattle would stop transmission of the virus in herds — specifically whether vaccine doses created for people in the federal government’s stockpile could be used to tamp out spread. “Large scale vaccination in cows may be able to stop the outbreak,” he argued.
There remains the question of how widespread the virus is in herds in the U.S. Given that H5 viral particles have been found in a substantial portion of commercially purchased milk — one in five samples bought in 38 states — the belief is that the herds that have been confirmed are a tip of the iceberg. But is that so? How far has this spread?

Related: When should we start making H5N1 vaccine, and who will make that decision? In short, it’s complicated

“We still don’t know how many farms are affected and that’s a big problem for containment. As long as undetected cases are out there, new infections can and will occur,” said Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization at the University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon, Canada.Like Rasmussen, Diego Diel, a virologist at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., would like to know how far the virus has spread in cows. “Is the virus circulating in other countries … such as Mexico and Canada?” he wondered. So far Canadian authorities report they have not found the virus in cows. And work Rasmussen and an ad hoc team of researchers from across Canada have done looking for traces of H5N1 in store-bought milk has so far failed to turn up any positive results. Finally, there is the question of whether this virus is now on its way to being seeded in cattle in the United States — permanently circulating among cows and adapting to better infect them. Will cows who have recovered from the virus have the capacity to catch it again? Humans, after all, only develop transient immunity when they have a bout of flu.
“What is going to happen when a recovered herd gets infected again? Maybe someone knows the answer to this already, but I don’t,” said Richard Webby, a flu virologist and director of the World Health Organization’s Collaborating Center for Studies on the Ecology of Influenza in Animals, located at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. “Will this disease burn out, or continue to circulate?”
Webby wondered whether cows can be reinfected, and if so, whether subsequent infections differ from the initial one, with potentially different amounts of virus in the milk of infected cows, for instance. Though experimental infections might help to start generating an answer to this question, the best way to answer it would be to monitor farms that have been affected.
Andersen worries what the consequences will be if we get to the point where this question can be answered. “We will eventually find out, however, this is a good example of ‘Let’s not,’” he said. “Let’s just focus on stopping the current epizootic in cattle.”

What’s happening to farmworkers?

Within days of the USDA’s confirmation that H5N1 was infecting cows in some herds in Texas, Kansas, and Michigan, a human infection was confirmed. A farm worker developed a florid case of conjunctivitis — pink eye. A swab of his eye contained the bird flu virus.
Since then, two more bird flu cases have been detected in people, both in Michigan. One also had conjunctivitis, but more recently a farmworker developed more classical flu-like symptoms. There have also been many anecdotal reports of other cases of conjunctivitis on affected farms, and experts believe there have been more human cases than have been confirmed. In addition to the reluctance of farmers to cooperate with authorities trying to study the situation, many of these workers are migrants. Some are likely undocumented. Many may not have access to health care, and may be frightened about interacting with government officials.
There is great interest in doing serology studies among farm workers — drawing blood to look for antibodies to H5N1 to try to get a handle on how often the virus is infecting people on farms. Getting approval to do this work has been challenging. The Texas farmworker refused to give blood.
Without better access to workers, it’s hard to assess where the risk is highest on dairy farms, and hard to put together practical, usable programs to protect them.
“While we know that people with direct, unprotected exposure to animals infected with H5N1 are the most likely to get sick with the virus themselves, CDC is still working to determine how exactly that infection occurs,” the agency told STAT in its submitted questions. “Understanding and defining the specific risky behaviors is important so that we can then translate that into the best means of prevention.”
Meghan Davis concurred. A dairy and mixed animal veterinarian who teaches in Johns Hopkins University’s department of environmental health and engineering and medical school, Davis said that understanding specifically how workers are being exposed on farms could lead to the identification of better ways to use personal protective equipment or even other protective approaches that don’t involve PPE. Farmworkers have been reluctant to wear masks and goggles; the heat in barns makes these tools impractical and even potentially dangerous, impeding their vision of what’s going on around them.

Related: New evidence supports fear that drinking raw milk containing bird flu viruses may be dangerous

“This would be done with exposure studies on positive farms that would involve sampling of a lot of pathways of exposure — air, water, waste — and would include what we call personal exposure assessment,” she said.
Rasmussen would like to know whether the route of exposure to the virus — a splash of milk in the eye, say, versus inhalation of virus-laced particles — affects the type of infection an exposed individual develops, and the severity of the ensuing illness.

What is happening to the virus?

Since H5N1 was first isolated from a goose in China’s Guangdong province in 1996, the virus has undergone extensive evolution. There are now several clades — sub-families, if you will — of the virus circulating in various parts of the world, moved around by wild birds. The version responsible for the outbreak in cows is a virus identified as clade 2.3.4.4b, genotype B3.13. While this clade also circulates in Europe, the B3.13 genotype has not been spotted there.
Until this outbreak, cows were never thought to be susceptible to H5N1. Beer had shown calves could be infected in a lab, but in the real world, cows had never been part of the H5 story.
Is this outbreak a sign that something about the virus changed? Or was it just a lightning strike? This is a question a number of the scientists had.
“Are other 2.3.4.4b viruses with other gene constellations also able to infect cattle?” wondered Kanta Subbarao, a flu virologist at Laval University in Quebec City, Canada.

Related: CDC asks states and cities to keep flu surveillance at peak levels because of bird flu threat

Richt, the veterinarian from Kansas State University who is experimentally infecting dairy cattle, also wants to know whether this H5 virus is special, or if it just got lucky. “Nobody knows whether this ‘bovine H5N1’ is unique or not. Maybe regular ‘avian H5N1’ viruses are able to infect cattle too,” he said. Beer wants to know whether this version of the virus has changes that allow it to infect the mammary gland so efficiently, or whether other versions of 2.3.4.4b — ones circulating in Europe, say — could also do this if they got the opportunity.
Yoshihiro Kawaoka put into words a question that worries many scientists watching this situation, the worry that underscored Fouchier’s insistence that this outbreak must be stopped as quickly as possible. “We do not know whether the bovine H5N1 virus will become established in cattle,” wrote Kawaoka, a flu virologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “If it does, will it evolve to adapt more towards ‘mammalian-like’ influenza viruses? … Will it pose a risk to human health?”
To date, the virus has not been seen to have the capacity to transmit efficiently among a mammalian species; any changes it acquires to allow it to do that could make H5N1 more adept at infecting humans.
Eckerle wonders if we’d know it, in real time, if the virus starts to change in ways that might signal dangerous adaptations for mammal-to-mammal spread. The USDA has been uploading basic genetic data to an international database, but those sequences do not indicate when the virus was collected or in which part of the country. It has been slow to share more complete genetic sequences, to the deep frustration of the scientific community. With this approach, there might be a delay in recognizing the development.

An intriguing curveball

Malik Peiris, who has studied the H5N1 virus since it started to infect people back in 1997 in Hong Kong, raised an intriguing and potentially hopeful question. Peiris, who is chair of virology at the University of Hong Kong’s School of Public Health, wonders whether the risk that H5N1 poses to people has changed in the decades since H5 first started infecting humans. Over the years, close to 900 people in 24 countries are known to have been infected, and about half of them have died.

Related: Wastewater testing specifically for bird flu virus will scale up nationally in coming weeks

Peiris and colleagues wonder, though, whether the 2009 H1N1 pandemic lowered the risk H5N1 poses. The neuraminidase protein on the 2009 virus, the N1, is quite similar, genetically, to the neuraminidase in H5N1. His group in Hong Kong has tested the blood of people who likely had H1N1 — which has circulated in the years since the 2009 pandemic — and tested stored blood samples from before 2009, looking to see if, when exposed to H5N1 virus, cross-reactive antibodies that might kickstart an immune response to H5N1 are present.
Their study is small, but suggestive that because of how similar the viruses are, some people may have antibodies that could help in the face of H5N1 exposure. It should be noted that in the years since 2009, there have been about 425 detected cases of H5N1 infection worldwide, of which about 180 were fatal. In the past decade, though, human cases have been less frequent and somewhat less likely to end in death.
“We need to ascertain how much protection this cross-N1 antibody will provide against H5N1 infection, at least to mitigate disease severity,” Peiris said, adding that his group is continuing to work on this question. “The question is what biological protective effect will they exert, if any?Andrew Joseph contributed reporting."

2024.06.08 17:09 thepandabear0 Is it reasonable for me as a kid to have been scared of Jesus Christ and God?

I don't have this fear anymore as I've grown to convince myself that supernatural things don't occur. I have been interested in getting back to Christianity but I want to understand why I felt this way as a kid and if anyone can offer any insight on it. I find that no one I've met has ever had this fear, am I alone?
I would always run away from religious paintings like those seen in the medieval paintings or the colored tiles or glass in churches. Heck, even the cross scares me at times. My father is catholic and he used to watch historical documentaries of religion, it scared me when they talk of God and Satan. In the Early morning I would go downstairs and be greeted with the cross in the living room, sitting on top of the fireplace. The mornings were quiet, with a blue hue and kind of dark, I would try to ignore the cross as I watched the TV. But sometimes I would look at the cross and be instilled with fear that someone was watching me. In the mornings I would turn on the TV to watch cartoons. But sometimes when I would turn on the TV, I see the documentaries something similar to this. The imagery and paintings, the music would haunt me. I would run upstairs and not touch the TV until my parents would wake up and I would feel safe switching the channels.
I've been to a catholic church as a child, but never enough to consider myself a catholic. It was scary, something about it was holy, but this holiness did not reassure me or make me comfortable. My father would use religion to teach me, such as saying that God knows everything that you do. I was taught that God punishes people who sin, lying included.
Like many children, they were scared of the dark. Parents would do their best to help their children face the darkness and overcome the fear. When my father helped me overcome this fear, all I saw in the darkness was the possibility that God was in the dark watching me. At this time I did not know the difference between God and Jesus, I had assumed they were the same because prayer was often done under Jesus on the cross. I did not have a solid foundation on the history of Christianity nor the stories told in the bible.
This fear was at its peak when I was about 11, when I was by myself in the house, it was late at night for my standards, about 9pm when I was walking up the stairs, we had a small section of the hallway upstairs that had a figurine of Mary and joseph with Jesus Christ as a baby, in the back was Jesus Christ on the cross. I had glanced at it, being fearful of it already. Then when I had glanced on it, an earthquake happened. I cried and ran to my mothers room to where it was already dark, I turned on all the lights and stayed under the covers of the bed. The house was silent. It was so creepy and supernatural I didn't move an inch. Whenever I had thought of Jesus / God at the time, I would imagine him constantly on the cross, towering above me, something like this.

2024.06.08 04:33 tipmakep-com Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara: My New Go-To Mascara

Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara: My New Go-To Mascara
As a mascara junkie, I’m always on the hunt for the next big thing. I’ve tried tons of formulas, from drugstore to high-end, in search of the perfect mascara that’ll give me long, luscious lashes without smudging, flaking, or weighing them down.
So, when I heard the buzz about Maybelline’s Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara, I had to try it.

First Impressions

The packaging is sleek and eye-catching, with a bold pink and blue design that instantly grabbed my attention.
The wand itself is curved and features a unique “flex tower” design that promises to reach every lash from root to tip. The formula is a rich, jet-black color that coats my lashes evenly without feeling clumpy or heavy.
NEWS : Revitalash Advanced Eyelash Conditioner: This Stuff Really Works!

Application and Performance

I was blown away by how easy it was to apply. The curved wand hugs my lashes perfectly, and the flexible bristles help distribute the product evenly.

I started with one coat, and my lashes were already noticeably longer and fuller. With a second coat, I achieved dramatic length and volume that rivaled false lashes.

Longevity and Smudge-Proof Wear

I was especially excited to see how well it would hold up throughout the day. I often struggle with mascara smudging and flaking, especially on hot or humid days.
But I was pleasantly surprised to find that this mascara stayed put all day long. I wore it from morning to night without any smudging or flaking, even after working out and sweating.
NEWS : BOOM! by Cindy Joseph: Is It Worth the Hype?

Overall Impression

I’m absolutely obsessed with the Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara! It’s the perfect combo of length, volume, and staying power. I’ve never found a mascara that delivers such dramatic results without feeling heavy or clumpy.
Plus, the fact that it’s smudge-proof and waterproof is a huge bonus. If you’re looking for a new mascara that’ll take your lashes to the next level, I highly recommend giving the Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara a try.
NEWS : Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask Review: A Sweet Treat for Your Lips

Here’s a quick rundown of the pros and cons:

Pros:
  • Lengthens and volumizes lashes
  • Smudge-proof and waterproof
  • Easy to apply
  • Lightweight formula
  • Affordable price
Cons:
  • Can be a bit tough to remove
  • May not be suitable for sensitive eyes
Overall, I highly recommend the Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara to anyone looking for a long-lasting, high-performance mascara that delivers dramatic results.
Tips:
  • Curl your lashes before applying mascara for an extra boost of lift.
  • Apply mascara in zig-zag motions to coat every lash.
  • Let each coat dry completely before applying another.
  • Use a makeup remover specifically designed for waterproof mascara to remove it easily.

2024.06.08 00:47 derrelltheauthor Temporary light: prologue (first time writing fr, would like to know ways i can improve)

The world we live in by xavion forbes
Beautiful sky, beautiful sun
Raindrops fall, shadows lurk
Pitiful insect beneath the earth
While those on the surface smiled and danced
The devil himself cackled and pranced
The knights who bowed to dejection
Fell victim to the wicked angel’s deception
Believing all his charming lies
The knights set out to claim their prize
Exterminating shadows and light
The knights cheered with delight
“Hooray! Hooray!” they yelled as they wept.
And though it may seem grim
Alas this is the world we live in
Prologue:
The sun rose over the forest as water drops ran across their leaves and landed on the undergrowth. A
group of five kids ran through the wet grass. Two of the kids were girls. They all had long silky white
Hair that stretched past their pointy ears. They laughed as they ran through the wet grass.
A small, beautiful fairy flew up to one the boys, her wings glistening in the sunlight as they flapped.
“Ailwi your mother has summoned you.” she spoke
“Okay!” said Ailwi as he ran toward the center of the forest.
After a while he stopped at a small village known as ‘heart of the forest.’ a place found deep within
The center of the forest. He left footprints in the soft, wet soil next to the tracks made by the wheels
Of wagons, the air was calm and smelled of purity. His home, like all the others was mad of clay and
Wood. He knocked on the door of his house and a tall, pale old man wearing robe like clothes.
answered. Ailwi’s bright green eyes lit up with glee he looked at the man.
“Dad! You’re Back!” he exclaimed as he flew into his father's arms.
“Ailwi! Nice to see you.”
“You took forever father!”
“I’m sorry i got something to make it up to.” he said as he reached into his travel bag.
“You need to stop spoiling the boy he already Makeru he is 10 years old already and where is Praxidike?”
“I’m not too sure Kamali did you call him?”
“Oh no i forgo-of course i did!”
“What a free spirit that boy is, he’ll be a great warrior someday.” Chuckled Makeru
“He’ll be a tough-skulled warrior.” said Kamali irritated.
Makeru walked over and hugged his wife.
“Don’t be like that now, you know i missed you too.” said Makeru as he hugged and rocked her.
Kamali’s blush appeared on her pale soft skin.
“Anyways i called you here because you need to feed Zeus, i already have the food here.” Said Kamali
“Yes ma’am.”
Ailwi grabbed the small wooden bowl of greens and took it outside.
“Zeus, Zeus!” he called.
A beautiful unicorn appeared from the forest. It was elegant from the golden air it exerted to the way it
Walked. It's radiance was unmatched. Ailwi laid the bowl on the ground and petted Zeus whilst it ate.
“Oh how nice it must be.” he thought to himself.
Makeru walked by and put a hand on his shoulder.
“What’s on your mind?” he asked.
“Why don’t they visit us?”
Makeru looked at the ground then at his son trying to figure out what to say.
“Due to survival instinct we always fear the bigger fish.” he said as he stroked his white beard.
“But we can protect ourselves.”
“We are a powerful race.” said Makeru as he looked away.
“As elves we are much more gifted than the humans...” he continued.
“Why don’t we show them that we are not a threat?”
“Fear and pride are terrible pair.”
“So...it’s impossible.” aid Ailwi with a golf ball in his throat as he looked at the ground.
Makeru looked at Ailwi.
"From the moment we are born we a given a choice and make our decisions accordingly, which is likely
what caused this rift to open to begin with, but our choices and decisions are slowly
becoming intertwined with one another.” he said as he rested a hand on Ailwi’s head
“So how do you walk along humans?”
Makeru smiled knowingly as if waiting for that question.
“When you’re a merchant you pick up a few tricks.” he spoke
He reached into his bag and put on a necklace with a bright blue gem. Makeru put the
necklace on. He Face began emitting a bright light Blinding Ailwi. He rubbed his eyes and
looked back at his father only To see a human man with short curly brown hair and eyes
sitting next to him. Fear and confusion washed over him, only for it to quickly subside when
he heard the man laugh.
“Dad?” he said asked a slightly annoyed tone.
“Yep.” Makeru chuckled.
He took off the Necklace, turning his face and hair back to normal.
“Neet trick huh?.” he asked as he continued laughing./
“Yea.”
“Well now.” said Makeru as he picked up Zeus’ empty bowl.
“Go be a kid.”
Makeru got up and ran back to play with his friends.
“Hey what took you so long Ailwi?” asked his younger brother.
His brother was a pretty tall 9-year-old kid, sightly taller than most elven children including his brother.
His white hair was held up in an elven warrior's ponytail, held up by a small, slim piece of rope.
“Praxidike mom called both me and you.”
“Yeah, but I just got the hang of this trick i can do with my magic.” Explained Praxidike.
“Watch this.”
Praxidike took a deep breath and pointed an open hand to a tree. Light emerged from his hand and the
Tree began to move. Crack!Crack!Snap! Trees branches crackled as they began to animate.
One of Which elongated itself and reached down to Praxidike. he walked upon the branch
and it raised him into the air. Once it stopped Praxidike to a sigh of relief and wiped the
sweat off his forehead.
“Wow that was awesome!” cheered one kid
“Cool!” cheered another
“Ailwi I need help.” laughed Praxidike nervously.
“Why?”
“I don’t have the energy to do that again.”
“Fine.”
Ailwi reached his hand towards the ground and took a deep breath. His hand began to
emit a bright green light. A small Wurl wind began to form.
“Alright jump!”
“Sure it’s safe?”
“Have I ever wronged you?”
Praxidike gave him a skeptical look.
“Have I ever dropped you.”
“Come on!” demanded Ailwi
Praxidike looked at the ground below and how far it was and shook his head.
“I can’t.”
“Why.”
Praxidike's legs were jelly, his heart pounding he swallowed the gulf ball sized lump in his
throat.
“Come on move Praxidike this isn’t becoming of a warrior.” he thought to himself.
He shut his eyes, trying to think of a way to get out of this mess.
“Praxidike you can do it!” yelled AIlwi.
Praxidike snapped out of it and took a deep breath.
“You are a warrior.” he thought as he got up.
Body still trembling he jumped off and fell into the Wurl wind, catching him.
“Thanks Ailwi.”
“You're welcome.” he said.
“Well, who's wants to play hide and seek?” said one of the kids.
Everyone said they wanted to play, except for Ailwi.
“Is it because you have never won a single game before?” teased Praxidike.
“No! You guys hide too well.”
“And you don’t know how to at all.”
“No, it’s just-”
“Don’t worry we can play without you.” said one kid.
Ailwi’s ear turned red with anger and embarrassment.
“Fine! I'll find you this time! I’ll find all of you!”
Ailwi turned around, covered his eyes and began counting.
The rest of the kids quickly fled giggling as they ran. Once he finished he began looking for them.
“I’ll show them.” he thought.
“I will win.”
After while he was still looking for them. His pointy ears became red again.
“Where are they?!” he said aloud as his hand began to emit a green light.
A Wurl wind began to form around him. exerting an impressive amount of force on
everything around Him, strong enough to push the trees back. Then it stopped.
His eyes felt stuffed as he tried to hold back his tears.
“I can’t do it!” he yelled as he ran away.
Praxidike clenched his fist as he saw Ailwi run.
Ailwi’s tears broke past his defenses and ran down his cheek. Once he got home, he ran and gave
Kamali tight hug.
“Mom!” spoke Ailwi as he buried his face into his mother’s all white dress.
“What’s wrong Ailwi.”
“I(sniff)hate(sniff)it!” cried Ailwi.
“Alright let’s go outside and talk about it until your father gets home.”
Kamali gently put her hand on Ailwi’s back and walked him outside.
“Now tell me what’s going on.”
Ailwi wiped his face.
“Everyone(sniff) is better than me at hide and seek and i hate it!”
“That’s okay-”
“No, it isn’t, everyone is good at(sniff)something(sniff)like Praxidike and I hate it.”
“Ailwi!” snapped Kamali.
Ailwi jumped at the sudden remark.
Kamali took a deep breath and sighed.
“Back when Makeru was a still a warrior he was tasked to train some of the young elves for combat.”
She spoke.
Ailwi looked up at her curiously.
“On his first day he came back home extremely mad. He told me he couldn’t stand how slow they
Were.”
“So, I told him ‘Maybe your just fast’ which made him a little angrier.”
“But the next day he came to me with a beautiful bouquet of flowers and thanked me...He
told me that I was right because though things started rocky once he slowed down and
adapted to their pace they got things a lot quicker”
“Understand what I'm trying to say?”
Ailwi looked at the ground then back at his mother then nodded.
Kamali knelt down to Ailwi’s level.
“And though it is okay to be angry we don’t hate anyone.” she said as she kissed his
forehead.
“Can I go back?”
“Sure.” answered Kamali as she gave a soft smile.
Ailwi ran back into the forest and found his friend along with his brother who had his arms crossed.
“All together.” he spoke.
“We’re sorry for hurting your feelings.” Praxidike and the kids said in unison.
“And I'm sorry for making fun of you.” said Praxidike.
“Why are you apologizing?”
“Because.” spoke Praxidike
“I saw you crying and realized that we took are jokes too far and that I shouldn’t have
pushed you to play a game that you didn’t want to play.” he continued.
“Don’t worry I'm sorry for quitting the game and leaving.” said Ailwi as he extended his hand.
Praxidike shook head and gave his older brother a hug.
“I want to play one more time.” said Ailwi.
Everyone looked shocked then skeptical.
“Are you sure?” asked Praxidike.
Ailwi gave a determined nod.
“Let’s play one more time, just don’t cry when you can’t find us.” said Praxidike.
He turned around, covered his eyes and began counting.
Again, the kids quickly fled. Once he finished counting, he began looking for them. After a
while once Again, his ears began to turn red them He paused, took a deep breath, and
closed his eyes. his hands began to glow, and a strong gust of wind blew in all directions.
Then he felt some resistance in the wind in multiple Places. He could feel it all. From the
motionless trees to the traversing animal. he could feel four people which he quickly
chased after. Finding all of his friends.
“You did it Ailwi!” cheered his brother.
“I can’t wait to tell mom.” Said Ailwi happily.
Both Ailwi and Praxidike ran home to tell their mother the good news.
“Mom, he won!” announced Praxidike.
“Oh really?”
“Yeah!”
“How?”
“I don’t know.” spoke AIlwi
“I just took your advice and I think i got stronger!” said Ailwi jumping with joy.
Kamali smiled.
“That’s great Ailwi.”
“How about you use that strength to help me peel and cut these vegetables?”
“Yeah.” said Ailwi as he walked over and began cutting the potatoes.
“Hey everyone!” announced Makeru as he walked in.
Praxidike tackled his father to the ground.
“Good one Praxidike but tackle old men.” said Makeru as he let out and exaggerated
wheeze.
“You choose to be old.” spoke Kamali.
“Ailwi won hide hand seek for the first time.”
“Oh really? Great job!”
VOOOOOM!
Makeru’s face became serious as he quickly got back onto his feet.
VOOOOOM!
Kamali walked over to Makeru.
“What’s going on?” she asked.
“I don’t know... I’ll go check it out, but just in case get the kids ready.” said Makeru as he left.
Makeru jogged to the front of the village, where other male elves stood. The all glanced at
his upon Arrival.
“Elves! We need to prepare for war! I already sent someone to evacuate the women and
children to the cavern!” Yelled One of them as he walked in front of the small platoon of
forty.
“Are enemy is not too far away and they are storming through front of the forest and have
broken the concealment barrier, we need to use this time to our advantage! We are going
to take them from all sides. We need to send five hidden archers on the eastern, western,
and southern sides of the army, the rest of us will take our post in those places as well.
Now Let’s finish what the human started two-hundred thousand years ago. Now get
ready!”
The elves mounted their unicorns and headed to their respective positions. The elf who
explained the battle plan stopped Makeru.
“It’s been a while, Joseph.” Said Makeru with a faint smile.
“Yes, odd that a rusty treasure such as yourself is entering battle.”
“Indeed bu-“
“I think it is better you head for the cavern you should feel much more comfortable there.”
“Well we all have are reasons.”
“Not when you left.”
“There were multiple.”
“Ah let me guess… the traitor?”
“Much more than that…”
“He committed sin against the natural order and was punished accordingly.”
“The natural order is what got us here and his sin would have made this punishment a lot
easier on us.”
“You have the heart of a coward.” Finished Joseph as he left into forest.
Makeru sighed, got on Zues’ back and followed. The Children followed there mothers in a
straight line while a bright glowing green fairy in the front illuminated their path in in the
stary night under the full moon. Ailwi and Praxidike clung to both sides of Kamali.
“Mom happening?” asked Ailwi.
“The forest warriors have to carry out their duties.” Answered Kamali.
“But will dad be okay?” asked Praxidike.
“You know as well as I do what your father is capable of.”
“But he is old now and he hasn’t fought in years.”
“He has beaten formidable creatures of the forest, can’t do that without a trick or two up
your sleeve.”
“Why did he leave in the first place if he was so strong?” Asked Ailwi
“Not to sure, he told me that that he ‘chose peace’ that was all…”
“Are we almost there?” asked Praxidike.
“Yes, just walk a little longer.”
“I can’t my feet hurt. Ailwi carry me on your back.” Whined Praxidike.
“No! Why would I?!”
“Because I’m your young brother and I won’t stay that way forever.”
“Fat chance! You’re bigger than me! If anything, you should carry me!” yelled Ailwi.
“No.” pouted Praxidike.
The troops of elves stood at their positions where they readied for battle. Humans on
horses dodged passed the trees and began their attack on the elves. Joseph took out his
enemies one after the other. His sword cutting through their flesh like a knife through
butter. The area was filled with blood splatter and battle cries. Joseph created magical
barrier as a large fireball torpedoed towards him. It broke straight through making contact.
He let out a blood curdling scream as his now lifeless steed fell on his leg. His foe stood
over him and raised his blade. The human stopped as an arrow shot through his head,
spilling warm red liquid on Joseph’s face. Joseph removed his leg and stumbled as he got
up. He heard something big and fast approaching. He put up a barrier up on all sides as it
got closer and closer, smashing the trees in its wake. Then it stopped. Within a nanosecond
a giant fist punched through the barrier.
“What’s wrong with my magic?!” he thought.
The smell of smoke and death spread alongside the fire that torched the forest. His
comrades began to drop one by one. A fifteen-foot-tall green creature with four muscular
arms and one eye stood over Joseph holding a massive, spiked metal club.
“They have cyclops?!” he thought as it began to raise its weapon over its head.
“I have no regrets.” He continued as he stared death in the eyes.
“Hurry put up your barrier.” Yelled a voice before the monster shrunk down into an infant.
Thud! Boom! The descending club bounced off the barrier and landed on the ground. A
sword cut though the baby cyclops’ neck sending his it’s head flying through the air.
Joseph looked up to see who saved him. This elf looked tall and muscular in his white shirt
that was stained with blood alongside the intricate golden maze-like patterns that matched
the unicorn he sat upon. He had the appearance of a man, who was no older than twenty.
“Makeru?!”
“Get up, there is another one coming, bigger than the one we just fought.” Said Makeru as
he Stretched his hand out.
Joseph picked himself up and grabbed his sword. A much larger cyclops with six arms
bashed it’s way though the trees and elves then towered menacingly over the two. It raised
all six clubs and swung them at it’s targets.
“Let’s go!” said Makeru as he ran towards his opponent.
He swiftly avoided five clubs and reached His hand out, but the sixth club hit him with the
force of a semi-truck and sent him flying into a tree. Zues got up and ran into the chaos.
“Zues-” yelled Makeru, trying to lift himself up.
Blood spilled out of his mouth as he fell back onto his knees. His body was on fire and
everything around him began to blend together in a red, blurry mess.
“For them…” he thought as he got back up.
“I need you to make me an opening!” commanded Makeru.
Joseph clenched his teeth and put as much power in his barriers as he could. The clubs
bounced of the Barriers allowing Makeru to get close enough to touch it. The cyclops
became an infant and once again, Makeru cut it in half. The clubs rained down as Makeru
took a deep breath. Joseph stared in awe.
“I have the heart of a man.” Said Makeru as he we ran back into the fierce battle.
Multiple massive, scaley beast with large wing hovered over the forest as fire spewed from
their deadly jaws.
“What beast don’t these humans have?!” thought Joseph.
Huge glowing blue arrows shot the creatures out of the sky. A fairy hurriedly fly towards
Joseph and collapsed in front of him. He picked her up in his hand.
“What’s wrong?!”
“There are human forces surrounding the forest and they are closing in!” explained the
fairy. Joseph froze. His pale complexion lost what little color it had.
“F-from th-the beginning.” He mumbled as he dropped the fairy.
He stared into the space in front of Himself, sniffling, mouth agape.
“No…Humans…Humans! HUMANS!” he screamed as he fell onto his knees.
A sword sliced through his neck causing his head to roll on the soil beneath him. Makeru
continued to cut his enemies down. Three men surrounded Makeru and swung their
swords with tremendous speed.Makeru quickly parried the blows and cut one of them in
half. The other two simultaneously aimed for Makeru’s neck. Makeru shrunk down into an
infant and touched both of their shoes, turning them both into old men. He grew back to
his original size then cut the men down. He jumped in the air to avoid the fire ball that was
hurled toward him but a thin drop of water shot through his leg at the speed of a bullet. He
fell to the ground hard. He felt the ground shake and quickly used his three remaining
limbs toto jump out of the way. Makeru landed next to the spikes that had emerged from
the ground. Makeru focused his mana inside his leg and his wound closed up but he still
stumbled as he got up. Multiple Beams of water shot through his body then a long blade
pierced his torso. He placed his palm on the man who stabbed him causing him wilt and
shrivel into an old man. Makeru removed the sword from his torso.
“I would have died either way, no matter what I chose…Huh? Sorry Kamali.” Thought
Makeru.
He turned around and stared at the raging chaos. Watching the elves and humans kill each
other as smoke enveloped his lung with every breath. Another beam of water shot through
his chest. He stared at the man he had killed with a blank face.
“What are you?” he asked aloud with a blank face before collapsing and bleeding out.
Praxidike and Ailwi continued to cling to their mother on their way to the cavern.
“Are we almost there?” asked Praxidike.
“Yes very close.” Said Kamali.
“Are those fairies?” asked Ailwi, pointing at the strange orangish red lights approaching
them. Kamali squinted her eyes and created a large clear semi-sphere that emitted a faint
purple hue around everyone.
“Everyone, they found us, run!” she yelled.
the women ran with their children and separated from the group into the forest. Kamali ran
with her children’s hands in hers.
“Mom why are we running?” asked Ailwi.
Kamali stopped behind a large tree.
“Mom, what’s happening?” asked Ailwi through his heavy breath.
Kamali gulped and sighed.
“We are in a terrible battle.” She said.
“With who?” asked Ailwi.
“Humans.”
“What about dad?!” asked Praxidike panicked.
Kamali looked down and sighed.
“We need to help him!” Yelled Praxidike.
“Be quiet…”
“But you love him, he is your husband and our father! He needs-“
“I do love him, with all my heart even when he was seen as a disgrace for leaving the army I
stayed by his side, but now you are our sole responsibility, and your safety is what matters!”
“We are fam-“
“Yes and because of that we can not help him!” she said through burning tears.
The two hugged Kamali and cried in her arms. Snap! Kamali’s ear twitched at the sound of
a twig Snapping causing her to perk up. She cupped the cheeks of her children.
“You must go.”
“What?” The two asked in surprise.
“You must run without me. Now!”
“But mom-“
“Ailwi take care of you brother and keep him safe.”
“No!-“
“I love both of you so much please never forget that.” Said Kamali as her voice cracked
“Please!” yelled Ailwi.
“Run! Now!” said Kamali as he pushed her kids.
The two ran as fast as they could into the forest and were soon out of sight. Five men
surrounded Kamali ready to attack. Ailwi and Praxidike kept running and once again
stopped behind a tree.
“Ailwi. Mom, Dad.”
“It’s okay they’re strong, they know how to fight they can win.” Encouraged Ailwi.
“Please, you understand Ailwi, they need help!”
“But we cannot help them.”
A lump enveloped within the two’s throats. Praxidike fell onto his knees and punched the
ground.
“Why is this happening?!” he said as his tears ran from his cheek onto the white lily beneath him.
Tears began to weld in Ailwi’s eyes but he refused to let them fall. He knelt down and gave
his weeping brother a hug.
“It will be over tomorrow, hopefully.” He said while rocking him.
They both flinched as they hear a twig snap. Before them stood a lengthy human with a disgusting
toothy Grin. His mouth moved but neither of the two could understand a word he uttered.
“Stop please.” Begged Ailwi.
The man face contorted into a disgusted and unpleased expression. He raised a glowing
hand causing The two to move out of the way as fast as they could, allowing the tree
behind them to be torched by The fireball.
“Ailwi we need to fight!”
Ailwi looked at Praxidike with wide eyes then Back at their enemy.
“No we can’t!”
“We have to!”
Ailwi swallowed hard and got ready for the fight right in front of him. Zeus was still
galloping within the forest. Before being stopped by four men. Praxidike created a tree
which wrapped around the man. The Man set the tree ablaze and quickly grabbed Praxidike
by the neck.
“Let me go!” He yelled.
Ailwi threw a powerful gust of wind at the man, making him stumble and trip over the tree
root created by Praxidike, dropping the child in his grasp. He threw a fireball at Ailwi,
forcing him into hitting his back on the tree hard, knocking him to the ground. Fire
enveloped the man’s fist before dealing Praxidike a blow to the gut so hard that his rib let
out a sickening crack. The fiery barrage of didn’t let up each punch to his face and torso
would burn his skin terribly. Finally, the man stopped, and the fire ceased, allowing
Praxidike to fall to the ground. He Picked him up by the neck and stood over Ailwi with the
same disturbing grin as before. Ailwi looked at his burnt and battered brother in fear.
“Please…stop…let him go.” Pleaded Ailwi, grabbing the man’s feet as he cried.
The man kicked Ailwi off of him and laughed. Praxidike’s whole body was set ablaze within
the mans grasp screaming in agony.
“NO!” screamed Ailwi.
Praxidike went silent and the man dropped his burning corpse. Zues was still fighting off the men far into
the forest. Soon they caught him within a net, raised their mighty sword and brought it
down upon his neck, slaying the last unicorn. Ailwi gazed upon what was left of his brother
in terror. His blood ran cold, he lost his breath, and his head was painfully pounding like a
drum it was so loud that he could barely hear the sound of his heart that was pounding in
his chest like an engine. The man’s wicked laughter echoed in Ailwi’s entire body causing
his blood to boil.
“Why...WHY?!” he screeched as his wind broke through the fireball that was launched at
him and condensed into sharp, powerful blade that beheaded his foe.The blood spilled on
Ailwi’s frightened face and mixed with his tears.
“No…I d-didn’t mean too…”
The pounding in his head got worse as vomit spilled from his mouth. Then he fell to his
knees and Passed out from both mental and physical exhaustion. Once he awoke the sun
rose, shining it’s light upon the tainted forest. Ailwi got up and began looking for his
mother. After a couple of minutes, he found his mother’s corpse lying on the ground, her
torso severed in two. Soon he also found Makeru on the ground, his body riddled with
holes. Ailwi fell onto his knees and cried on top of his lifeless father.
“Please don’t (Hiccup) leave me!(sniff).” He cried.
“I need you.”
After some time, he walked back to the village.
“Someone? Anyone?” he called. The houses were broken down and charred. He walked
over to the Rubble that was once his house. A blinding blue light emitted from it revealing
his mother. She was made of the same blue light that blinded Ailwi.
“Mom?” asked Ailwi through quivering lips.
“Ailwi, my son.”
“Mom!” exclaimed Ailwi as he ran to her to give her a hug.
He phased through her and tripped. The spirit turned around with a face of pain and sorrow.
“Ailwi, I love you more than life itself.”
“I couldn’t save him.” Said Ailwi while still on the ground.
“You’re safe and that’s all that matters.”
Her body began to flicker.
“I don’t have much time.” She continued.
“What’s wrong?”
“My soul must travel to heaven.”
“No, don’t go! I don’t want to be alone!”
“You won’t. I need you to promise something.”
Ailwi got up and looked at his mother with curiosity.
“Do not bear any hatred in you heart, not toward the humans, not towards anyone.”
“What?! They killed everyone!”
“Please-“
“NO! how could I forgive them?! After everything they stole!?”
“Please Ailwi I beg of you.” She said while cupping his cheek and giving him a kiss on his
forehead.
“Please.” She continued before completely fading away.
Ailwi cried harder than ever as he fell to the floor.
“MOM! Come back! Please!”
“I promise…” he said as he curled into a ball.
Something gleamed within the wreckage of his house. He picked himself up and pulled it
out of the dirt.
“Dad’s Necklace.” He said as he clutched it.
Once he put it on his face began to change. His long white hair shortened and browned
and his ears shrunk and became round. He looked into a nearby puddle and stared at his
new human appearance.
“I’m a monster.” He said with a blank face. before falling to his knees, weeping loudly.

2024.06.07 19:58 HeadOfSpectre Soldiers Keep Moving (Part 3)

Part 2

It was late when I got back home but for as tired as I was, I knew that I wasn’t going to sleep a wink.

I went into my computer room and opened up my laptop, before plugging in the USB the bartender had given me. There were four folders on it, each one containing the feed from a different camera in the Rooster. I clicked into one of the folders at random and picked through the video files inside, looking for the stretch of footage that I needed. It didn’t take me long to find it either.

I clicked into one of the video files, and watched as the chaos of the Red Rooster played out before me. People drinking, flirting, laughing. Living their lives. Nothing I hadn’t seen before. I let the footage play for a bit, before getting up to grab myself a couple of beers from the fridge. When I got back, I started skipping through the video, waiting for the moment my two victims showed up.

When I’d taken the bartender's statement, he’d told me that he’d seen the two before, both separate and together. He didn’t know their names, but he knew their faces. Other patrons recognized them too. One of them had identified the red haired girl as ‘Kayley’ and had mentioned she lived down at River Ridge, a trailer park outside of town. Nobody had been able to name the Elegant Woman, although a lot of patrons had said they’d seen her around before.

Apparently, both of them usually came to hook up, leaving with a different stranger on most nights. Odds are, they’d why they were there on that night too. They’d come in at around 8:47. The Elegant looking dark haired woman seemed to be the one taking the lead, and seemed to be the one doing most of the talking. She and Kayley went to sit at the bar, talking amongst each other all the while. I couldn’t say for sure what they were talking about. Even if the file had audio, I doubt I’d have been able to single them out over the crowd. They looked at ease though.

They shared a couple of drinks. Nothing seemed that out of the ordinary. I took a sip of my beer, watching them. Eventually, Kayley got distracted talking to a man further down the bar, while the Elegant Woman stayed at the bar, drinking casually as if she had all the time in the world.

The man in the suit came in at around 9:12.

My attention shifted to him the moment he came in through the door.

He fit the description that every witness I’d spoken to had given about the shooter. A tall man with a red beard in a black suit who was wearing a pair of reflective sunglasses despite the fact that it was 9 at night. Even beneath his suit, it was easy to tell he had a good physique, and his crew cut implied a military history to me.

Red Beard took a seat at the bar, a few seats down from the Elegant Woman. He ordered a drink, and nursed it for a bit, discreetly looking around at the other patrons of the bar but not seeming to look directly at either the Elegant Woman or Kayley. He just drank his beer, and when he was finished, he got up and switched seats, moving to sit beside the Elegant Woman. She looked over at him, putting on a charming smile as they talked. I almost got the impression that they were flirting with each other.

They kept talking for a while and as they did, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. If I didn’t know what was coming next… it would have caught me completely off guard. When she turned to take a sip of her drink, the gun appeared in his hand, almost without warning. She didn’t even have time to react before he shot her at point blank range. Three bullets straight to the chest.

I saw Kayley spin around and freeze up. Her entire body tensed, as if she was ready to lunge at the shooter. If that was her intention though, she never got the chance. He put two bullets in her without even thinking, then without so much as a glance backward, he took off toward the door.

I rubbed my temples, watching as the chaos of the aftermath unfolded. Some people called 911. Some, like the bartender, ran to the aid of the bodies. I saw myself run in through the door less than six minutes after the shooting had happened.

That was where I stopped the video.

I took another sip of my beer, and sighed. I rewound it a little bit, watching as the shooter came in and watching as he left. I might recognize this man on the street if I saw him, but other than his red hair and sunglasses, there wasn’t really much to go off of.

The way he left… he walked away almost casually, as if he had someplace to be. He didn’t run. He didn’t panic. He was cold, calm, and professional. I guess that fit with the other murders, didn’t it?

I steeled myself to review the footage again, this time from another camera. Maybe there’d be something from one of the angles that I didn’t see. I checked the angles of the other three cameras. Two of them wouldn’t offer me much. One of them didn’t even catch the shooting. But the last one…

The last one looked promising.

It was situated near the back of the bar and through it, you could see out a window onto the street. It wasn’t the best view… but it was different.

From that angle, I could see a black sedan pull up to drop the man in the suit off. I saw him walk in the door and sit by the bar and from there, the scene played out the same as it did before. The man in the suit shot the two women and he left.

He strode out toward the sedan parked out front, got in the passenger seat and the sedan took off like a shot. There’d been a getaway driver. Interesting…

I set my unfinished beer down. I could drink the rest of it later. I needed to go on a little drive.

It was around 4 AM when I returned to the Red Rooster. I parked my car on the street, exactly where the black sedan had parked, and got out. The downtown area around me was dead silent. Lifeless almost. There wasn’t another soul in sight. But that was fine by me. That just meant that there were no distractions.

It didn’t take me long to find what I was looking for. There was a bank across the street and I walked toward it. The doors were locked, but that was fine. I could see what I needed through the windows.

Bank machines.

More specifically, bank machines with cameras. Cameras that were pointed right at the Red Rooster.
Perfect.

***

I was off shift the next day, but that just gave me time to get some actual work done. It was probably better I do it all from home. This case was Di Cesares now. I wasn’t sure what she’d do if she caught me working on it, and I wasn’t entirely sure I wanted to find out. Judging by those fangs in her mouth, she wasn’t human either. Hell, I wasn’t sure if she was actually even from the State Police… I got the impression that Sheriff Smith didn’t seem to think so. But if she wasn’t with them, who was she with? Why hadn’t the State Police sent someone else? Had she done something to them? Even if she had, I couldn’t just believe that the State Police wouldn’t notice something like that.

No… there was something else going on here. But I could figure that out later.

First things first - I needed to review the footage from the bank machines. The bank was more than willing to give me access to the footage when I asked. They knew who I was, they knew what had happened and they knew why I was asking.

Once I got back home, it didn’t take me long to find what I was looking for. Just as I’d hoped, the bank machines had recorded the car that had been waiting outside the Red Rooster. I couldn’t make out the license plate from the footage… but I could see enough to identify the make and model of the car.

An Audi A6 Sedan.

I’m not much of a car guy, but I can say that there’s not a lot of Audi’s in rural Ohio. Even without the license plate, this shouldn’t have been hard to find. I made a call to a buddy of mine in the BMV, told him what I was looking for and within the hour, he had the results for me.

It turns out, there were actually only eight Audi A6 Sedans registered in our county and all of them were registered to the same company.

Apostle Security.

Naturally, I did a bit of research on them. Apostle was a mid-sized private security firm based in Cincinnati, although they had a few other offices in Ohio and some of the surrounding states. It’d been started by a man named Joseph Cray about ten years ago, although beyond that I couldn’t find out much about their history and really, I didn’t care. Their website didn’t list any offices in my county… but the BMV seemed to say otherwise. My friend there had given me an address outside of town and even if I was off duty, I figured that no one could give me any guff for taking a little scenic drive. And if I just so happened to see some black Audi’s that looked like the one that had been parked outside of Red Rooster last night… well, maybe I’d pass that information along to whoever was on duty at the time. I’m pretty sure it was Biggs and Hoffman. They could decide whether or not to tell Di Cesare. It would be completely out of my hands.

I headed out to my car, plugged the address I’d gotten into my GPS and took a little drive.

As I drove through the backroads leading out of town, I felt a sense of quiet apprehension. Maybe I was being naive, putting my hopes on this lead. But I’d done the work. If Apostle really was behind this, it would make sense for them to have some sort of location in the county. If I was right, maybe I wouldn’t find all the answers to this surreal mess of a case, but I’d at least find the shooters. That was something. At least people wouldn’t be dying anymore.

Christ… I still didn’t know what to make of the victims. The gills on Kayley, the fangs on Patricia Russell, the fractures on Geoffery Vickers bones. Maybe these people really were monsters? If so… maybe these shooters knew that. Maybe that was why they did it.

But even if that was the case - I still couldn’t just leave a roving kill squad to wander around unchecked. The way things were going, it was just a matter of time until one of the victims was just some innocent bystander. I passed by a familiar sign as I neared the edge of the county. An advertisement for the local Volkswagen dealership.

‘You’re in Smith Country!’ It declared, along with a prominent smiling photo of Aaron Smith himself. I’d always found that sign a little creepy. The eyes and the smile were both a little too wide. It made the man look downright unhinged. I’d never actually met Aaron Smith in person, despite working for his older brother. The Sheriff would mention him from time to time and I could see the family resemblance, but it was hard to imagine the face on that sign sitting down to an odd Sunday dinner with Sheriff Smith.

To be fair, they probably didn’t talk much. I don’t think Aaron Smith himself even lived in town anymore. He owned a bunch of other dealerships scattered around southwest Ohio. Smith Volkswagen was just the oldest. But the sign had been there forever, and why fix what ain’t broken, even if it is creepy as hell?

Either way, just past that unsettling sign was my destination. Once upon a time, it’d been a small auto garage that had long since gone defunct. It’d been closed down since before I moved to town. From what I’d seen, Smith Volkswagen had used the property as an additional lot to store the cars they had no room for, from time to time but it didn’t seem like they did that anymore. Now the place just looked completely dead. There were no cars parked out front, Audi or otherwise.

I pulled into the parking lot, and checked the address I had to make sure it was correct. This was definitely the place. I parked my car and got out, before making my way to the front door. I found it locked.

Naturally.

Guess my luck had to run out somewhere. Maybe this was a dead end? I already knew I probably wasn’t getting inside without a warrant, and I didn’t exactly know what my chances were of getting one.

I tried the door again. It still didn’t open. From the corner of my eye, I noticed a security camera by the door. I stared up into it. The presence of a camera probably didn’t mean much. Whoever owned this property probably wanted to deter adventurous kids and urban explorers from going in. Maybe it was nothing, but I still couldn’t help but find it interesting.

I considered just going back to the car but didn’t want to feel like I’d wasted my time, so I figured I’d snoop a little bit. I took a quick walk around the perimeter, peeking in through the windows that I passed. I didn’t see much, but judging by what I could see, this place wasn’t abandoned. I didn’t see anyone inside, but the inside looked awfully clean for an abandoned building.

Going out around back, I noticed that there were garbage bags in the dumpsters out back. Not a lot… but enough to confirm to me that there were people here. Maybe this wasn’t a dead end…

I heard a sudden mechanical whirr from the other side of the building that made me pause. I rounded the corner, moving along the back of the building just in time to see a convoy of five black Audi’s rolling out of the garage door, one after the other. They turned onto the road, moving almost in perfect sync as they headed toward town. I felt a knot form in my stomach as I watched them go.

I’d found the cars I’d been looking for… although if they were going somewhere, odds are that we’d be getting a call about it all too soon.

My heart was beating faster in my chest.
I knew I couldn’t just sit there and watch. I knew I needed to do something.
So I did.

I ran back to my car as fast as my legs could carry me, leaping behind the wheel and keying the engine. I tore back out onto the road, speeding after the convoy. I didn’t know what my plan was. I didn’t have a plan. I just knew that if I didn’t do something, people were going to die.

The convoy turned away from downtown, following the river north. They passed by the River Ridge RV park, moving further down the road towards the outskirts of the county. It was hard to say exactly where they were going. There wasn’t much out that way, not for several miles. But they were moving with purpose and so was I.

About ten miles past River Ridge, I noticed something up ahead. Flashing lights, like what you’d see on a squad car, although there was no color to them. They were just white.

The convoy in front of me finally began to pull off the road. I could see them passing another Audi, this one outfitted with an LED bar. Two men on the road waved them off. Both of them were dressed in well pressed suits and wore reflective sunglasses. One of them was bald with a very thick dark stubble, and the other had a familiar red beard and military crew cut.

The knot in my stomach grew tighter as I drove toward the men, waiting for them to stop me. I reached for my pistol, ready for them to make a move. They just waved me on, barely even looking at me. I still kept my hand on my gun as I drove past, watching Red Beard and Baldy like a hawk.

I could see two other men behind the parked Audi with the flashing lights out of the corner of my eye. They were on the ground, fidgeting with something. It took me a moment to figure out what it was.

Spike strips.

I’d seen them before. We’d used them back during my army days at vehicle checkpoints and while we’d never had to use them while I’d been working as a city cop, we did have them.

They were setting up an ambush here. The five Audi’s that had pulled off the road parked along the shoulder further down. I could see men in suits getting out of them. I didn’t see any guns… I guess they were still partially trying to be subtle. But I still had a feeling that they were armed.

I kept on driving, going further down the road. Stopping and confronting these men wasn’t an option. Maybe they weren’t interested in making a mess by shooting any random schmuck who passed by their little trap, but that didn’t change the fact that they were probably dangerous. Charging in and dealing with them by myself wasn’t a smart idea. So instead, I reached for my phone, and I called Biggs.

He answered on the first ring.
“Hey Sawy-”
“Ethan, we have a situation,” I said. “Who’s on duty with you right now?”
“Right now it’s Hoffman, why what’s going on?”
“Call Hoffman, call the Sheriff and call Lopez. There’s going to be another attack.”
“What? Where?”

“I’ve spotted some suspects setting up some kind of ambush ten miles north of River Ridge. How soon can you be here?”
“Twenty, thirty minutes, maybe?” He said, “Sawyer, where are you right now?”
“I just passed the ambush point. They’re gearing up for something, now move your ass!”
“Y-yeah, of course!”
Biggs hung up immediately, and I pulled off to the side of the road. I took a deep breath, before checking the magazine of my pistol and getting out.

I wasn’t going to charge in needlessly… but I needed to have eyes on this situation. It’d be easier if I could get closer on foot. Leaving my car behind, I dipped into the woods along the other side of the road, letting them hide me as I walked back along the road toward the ambush.

The river whispered beside me as I crept through the trees, and the steep incline leading down toward the river helped keep me low and hidden from sight.

I could see the flashing white lights of the parked Audi, and watched as they suddenly went dark. Red Beard was speaking into a walkie talkie, and on the far side of the road, I could see several men waiting by the five parked Audi’s. This time, they had guns. Assault rifles, by the looks of it.

I was right. There was another attack coming and it was coming now.
“Fish market’s on the move, gentlemen. Put out the nets!” Red Beard said.

On his order, I watched one of the men pull the spike strip across the road, while Red Beard addressed the men on the far side of the road. He spoke like a drill instructor and the men he addressed carried themselves like soldiers.
“As of right now, we are locked in on this operation! We run things smooth, we run it clean, we get the job done. No mistakes like last time! No stragglers! Understood?”
“Sir yes sir!” Came a familiar chorus.

After a few minutes, headlights appeared further down the road. I watched them from my vantage point, praying they belonged to Biggs. But the oncoming vehicle was too big to be a squad car. This looked more like an RV.

No…

This was a whole convoy of RV’s. Most likely coming from River Ridge.

I couldn’t count them all, but they were all heading towards the ambush… and that was when the pieces slowly began to click into place.

Kayley, the girl who’d survived… the girl the people at Red Rooster had been able to ID. She’d lived at River Ridge. If she and her friend from the other night weren’t human… then there was a damn good chance that there were others just like them there. Other women with gills. I guess River Ridge would be the perfect place for them… it was quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of downtown and close to the water. Whatever these people were… it’d just about be the perfect place for them.
‘Fish market’s on the move.’

That’s what Red Beard had said.

The other killings hadn’t exactly been low key… if there were more girls like Kayley at River Ridge, odds are they’d heard about them. And odds are that once they realized they were being targeted too, their first instinct would be to get the hell out of dodge. That would explain why they were carrying out this attack in broad daylight too. They weren’t going off of their own schedule, they were trying to catch the monsters as they fled. And now their targets were here… drawing closer and closer to their massacre with each passing second.

There was no sign of Biggs or anyone else. They still had to be at least fifteen minutes out… probably more.. By the time they got here, the shooting would probably already be over.

I couldn’t let that happen.

For the record - I knew that what I was about to do was extraordinarily stupid, but I didn’t see a whole lot of other options. I couldn’t allow them to ambush those RV’s. I couldn’t. I didn’t really stop to weigh the pros and cons in my head. Sure, I knew that what I was about to do had a chance of survival that was damn near zero… but hey, everyone dies sometime, right? This was the only option I had available to me. In a lot of ways, it wasn’t really even a choice I made. I just did it. I took aim at the nearest target, and I fired.

I saw one of the men by the car, the bald one with the scruff grab his shoulder and stumble back a step. He wasn’t dead, but he was hurt. I shot at him again, but he was low enough to the ground and far enough away that I didn’t hit him. He hastily dragged himself off the road and behind the Audi. He still managed to stand, so clearly he wasn’t in that bad a shape.

The moment he heard the gunshots, Red Beard spun around, drawing his own pistol as he did. I knew that he saw me. I could see his expression creasing into a scowl the moment he did. Our eyes locked for only a split second before the air was filled with the sound of gunshots.

POP. POP. POP.

I felt a white hot pain sting across my arm as one of his bullets grazed me, and even though I returned fire I doubt I hit him. Red Beard dove behind his Audi, but behind him I could see his little kill squad moving in.

I couldn’t count how many of them there were. More than ten. Fifteen, maybe? Twenty at most? Who could say.

I retreated back into the trees, skidding down the forested incline toward the river as I waited for the gunmen to come for me.
“Keep off the road!” Red Beard snarled, “Watch your fire! Wait until you have a shot!”
He must’ve been trying to salvage this operation… Although from where I sat, the RV’s looked to be slowing down. Seems they’d noticed the gunfire.

Red Beard glanced in the direction of the RV’s, and I could see the gears in his head spinning. This was all going wrong… but he didn’t seem the type to give up. On the road, the lead RV moved to make a U turn. I could see Red Beard watching it, and took a pot shot at him. It didn’t hit him, but it did shatter the driver's side window of his Audi.

Roaring in frustration, Red Beard fired three shots back at me.
Goddamnit! Fuck it! Squads 1 and 2, kill that son of a bitch! 3 to 5, intercept the convoy, NOW!”

I saw some of his men back off, running back to their cars. The rest moved onto the road, coming after me. I fired at them, and I saw one of them stumble back as I shot him dead in the chest. But he didn’t die. He stumbled, but picked himself right back up.

Great, they were armored too.

I was punished for poking my head out by a burst of machine gun fire. The trees by my head splintered as I dove down into cover. I lost my footing, sliding further down the incline toward the river. The only reason I didn’t fall all the way down was because I caught myself on a tree. Looking up, I could see about eight figures at the top of the incline, coming down off the road. One of them spotted me and opened fire. All I could do was scramble out of the way and roll further down the hill toward the water.

Gunfire followed me, but I couldn’t see who was shooting. I couldn’t see where they were. I couldn’t stop to try and get a shot. There were too many of them. I dove down to safety behind a fallen old tree. Bullets rained down on it, tearing off chunks of bark and sending splinters raining down on me.

I gripped my gun tight. My blood rushing in my ears. Somehow… I always wondered if I’d die like this. Dug into the dirt, with bullets whizzing past my head. Maybe there wasn’t any other way for me to die? Who’s to say? But I’d be damned if I didn’t take at least one of those bastards down with me.

I took a deep breath. Steeled myself for what I was sure was going to be my last stand.

Then, gun in hand I rose to return fire.

Only when the rifles went off, they weren’t aimed at me.

I could see the eight figures standing in between the trees, but they’d turned away from me. They were shooting at something else now, although I couldn’t immediately see what. I just saw a shape, moving between the trees. I heard the ground shift and saw a cloud of dirt fly up. One of the armed men was sent screaming down the incline, into the river. I wasn’t sure if he’d survived the fall or not.

One of the other men opened fire, only for the shape to grab his rifle, I saw them force it down, before lunging at his throat. He screamed as they sank their teeth into him, but didn’t seem to be able to put up much of a fight otherwise. Two of his friends opened fire on him, hoping to kill the shape that had him in its grasp. The ground seemed to shift beneath them, sending both of them down the incline and into the river. Within seconds, whoever or whatever the hell this was had just taken out half of the men who were supposed to be killing me.

They tossed the man they’d just bitten to the ground and for the first time, I got a good look at my savior. Clementine Di Cesare’s mouth was smeared red with blood. Her sunglasses were absent and in her blue eyes I could see an unsettling calm. As if this wasn’t so much different to her than any other mundane chore.

The remaining gunmen seemed to freeze at the sight of her, not seeming to know how to react until Di Cesare moved. She was fast. It was hard to tell if she was running, or if the ground simply shifted beneath her. She lunged for the nearest gunman, kneeing him in the stomach and tossing him aside like he weighed nothing, although while she dealt with him, the man beside him got off a lucky shot.

Before Di Cesare could deal with him, he emptied half his magazine into her chest… but she didn’t fall. Hell, there wasn’t a scratch on her. The guy who’d shot her on the other hand?

Blood dribbled from his mouth. His body jerked violently as he collapsed to the ground. It was as if he’d been the one who’d gotten shot, not her. Di Cesare barely paid him any mind, regarding the final two men with that eerie calmness.

I could see one of them stumbling away, trying to get back up the incline. The other one just gritted his teeth and decided to fight on until the end. He was smart enough to know that shooting her wasn’t going to work, so instead he pulled a combat knife from his jacket and charged at her, as if it would do him any good.

Di Cesare barely even reacted. She sidestepped him and casually sent him down the incline into the river below. I saw him tumble down into the river before crashing into the water below with a final scream.

Di Cesare watched him fall with a quiet disinterest, before her attention shifted to me. I took a step back, half expecting her to come for me just like she did with the others. Instead, she simply wiped the blood from her mouth before she turned away from me, and headed back up the incline, moving with purpose.

I hesitated for a moment before following her. Di Cesare stepped out onto the road and surveyed the scene before her with an intense gaze. Whatever Red Beards plan had been… clearly everything had gone catastrophically wrong. I could see some of the black Audi’s on the road, trying to follow the RV’s, although the one that got the closest to one of the RV’s near the back of the convoy got rammed by it and sent careening off the road.

The tires of Red Beard’s Audi screeched as it tore back out onto the road. I saw him behind the wheel, sparing Di Cesare and I a single glance as he took off at top speed. I raised my gun to shoot at him but Di Cesare seized me by the wrist, stopping me from doing so. I looked over at her, confused.
“Let them run,” She said calmly. “We know where they are now.”

She looked down the road, back toward the fleeing RVs, and seemed momentarily content. One of the five parked Audi’s, driven by the survivor of the group who’d gone after me sped onto the road and Di Cesare regarded it with quiet disinterest before walking over to the road spikes and beginning to move them.
“Help me with this,” She said coolly.

I hesitated for a moment before doing exactly what she asked.
“You called for backup?” She asked, as we dragged the spikes off the road.
“I did,” I said. “Wait, you’re not with them?”
“No,” She replied plainly. We packed away the spikes but left them at the side of the road. Someone else could collect them as evidence. “I was with the RV convoy.”

I raised an eyebrow at her.
“You were with them?” I asked. “So you knew about the attack?”
“I knew it was likely,” She said. “Although I didn’t expect you here, Deputy Sawyer,”
She tilted her head at me.
“Working behind my back, I see.”

“I was following up on a lead,” I said. “I tracked the vehicle that last night's shooter used to a garage just on the edge of town. I saw some cars leaving and figured it was probably bad news, so I followed them here.”
“I see… you’re quite sedulous, aren’t you?”
“Well I couldn’t exactly sit around given the past few days, could I?” I asked. “What the hell just happened back there, on the incline? How did you… what the hell did you do? I watched someone shoot you, then die of their own gunshot wounds! How the hell did you do that? What the hell are you?”

The questions spilled out of me without much thought, although Di Cesare didn’t seem to care much.
“That’s a question with a complicated answer,” Di Cesare replied.
“Uncomplicate it, then!”
“I’m an old soldier, same as you,” She said. “Maybe I know a little bit of magic… maybe I’m not entirely human anymore, but that’s what I am at my core.”
“Vampire…” I said quietly.
She didn’t answer, but there was a look in her eyes that told me I was right. At this point, after seeing what I’d just seen, I wasn’t in much of a state of mind to doubt it.

“So that trick with the bullet wounds… was that a vampire thing or a magic thing” I asked.
“Attribution spell,” She said. “Makes me harder to kill. Not a lot gets through it. I’ll tell you what. Give me your car keys, and I’ll answer any questions you have later.”
She extended a hand to me.

“I’m sorry, my car keys?” I asked, “Why?!”
“I need to follow the RV’s to make sure they make it out of the county safely. You said you’ve called in backup. You still need to be here for when they arrive. So… I’ll be borrowing your vehicle.”
I hesitated for a moment, before swearing under my breath and handing my keys off to her.
“Do what you’ve got to do…” I said under my breath.

She nodded.
“It’ll be returned to you when I’m done, no worse for wear.”
With that, she pushed past me and walked toward my car and all I could really do was just watch. She took my car, and sped off after the RV’s, leaving me in the road to clean up the mess.

What if there was a Vs bosses Mode in Typical colors: Classic Warfare?
kind of, to relax, I decided to draw the versions of the bosses from Typical colors 2 in Typical colors: Classic Warfare, my "AU" of Typical colors 2. Starting off beautiful Josephine fitten, Classic brute's mother (Her name is Joseph Fitten Jr .) and CEO of Fitten co(Who was the CEO previously was her husband, but he passed away) and possessing Fitten blood, she is a blood warrior and possibly one of the strongest living beings in the world. her relationship with the classic brute is a bit complicated, and she's only 59 years old.

There is some evidence that Joseph was Bi/Gay
The Bible basically describes Joseph (of technicolor dreamcoat fame- the coat of many colors ) as being hot in a girl way. Or more exactly, there's a pair of adjectives that's normally only used to describe women like Rachel or Abigail as attractive, but which, apart from different gender endings, are also used for Joseph.
In Genesis 39:6 it describes Joseph as beautiful/pretty
And Joseph was a goodly person יָפֶה תֹּאַר and well favoured יָפֶה מַרְאֶה
It's the phrase "yepheh to'ar wipheh mar'eh" / יְפֵה-תֹאַר וִיפֵה מַרְאֶה. It's also used with feminine grammatical endings for women like Rachel, Esther, and Abigail.
The Bible basically describes Joseph (of technicolor dreamcoat fame) as being hot in a girl way
Joseph was gifted female clothing by his father. Ketonet passim (translated to "coat of many colors" ) is only ever mentioned one other time in the Bible: As the clothing of the virgin daughters of a king.
2 Samuel 13:18 And she had a garment of divers colours upon her: for with such robes were the king's daughters that were virgins apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after her.
כְּתֹנֶת keth-o'-neth פַּס pas
The clothing that Joseph was given was worn by princesses. It was womens clothing
Now there is evidence that Joseph was in a slave master love relationship with Potiphar - a Eunuch Genesis 39:1-23 and later on a relationship with the keeper of the prison which had him get favorable benefits and protection while in prison
Potiphar was a Eunuch who had a wife. This puts to shame those who claim that a Eunuch is just a castrated individual. For some reasons the English translators chose to translate סָרִיס sârı̂ys to officer instead of Eunuch becuase they knew the implications ( I have dealt with the subject of Eunuchs as well as the scandals concerning the translation of the original texts into English and I will not address it here lest my post become too long )
In Egyptian culture a man could have a wife and also have a gay slave. But it could only be a slave because they considered it shameless for a free man to be a bottom. In ancient culture it was even shameful for a woman to go on top of a man during sex. Hence a free man could buy a slave that would then become his bottom and this is the case of Potiphar and Joseph
The word translated Master is אָדוֹן âdôn sovereign, that is, controller. So Potiphar was Joseph’s sovereign & Joseph had to do what his master commanded. Joseph had to be submissive. We all know the Dominant top 🔝 and submissive bottom dynamics
Now please note I’m not advocating for slavery. We know the Bible was written at a time when slavery was accepted. Just like how Polygamy was rife in the Old Testament. My aim is to show gays that there actually is rich material in the Bible that addresses the issue of sexuality as it was in that old archaic culture.
Potiphar was not a believer. Egypt had a Pagan culture and they had a very sexual culture and sex was practiced. They actually had a very sex positive culture.
Happy pride 🌈🏳️‍🌈🦄

We all know the Dominant top 🔝 and submissive bottom dynamics in gay relationships.
Now please note I’m not advocating for Slavery. No but we all know slavery was part of the history of the Bible as well as that women were treated like property or a commodity. Actually the marriage examples that straight people like to throw in our faces are considered very dysfunctional in todays society. Polygamy is considered a sin today but it was rife in the Old Testament
My aim is to help gays be able to read the Bible with an open mind and to see things that were hidden when the Bible was translated into English. I hope and pray this will liberate somebody. Thank you 🙏 😊

A $120,000 jury bribe disrupts US charity fraud trial - GREEDY IDIOTS!

Seven Somali immigrants in Minnesota are accused of stealing millions in pandemic-era federal funds meant for needy children
A trial over one of America's largest pandemic-fraud schemes has taken a mysterious turn following an alleged attempt to bribe one of the jurors.
The juror was dismissed after she claimed that a woman dressed in black visited her home and offered her a bag filled with $120,000 (£93,770) in cash. In return, she was to vote to acquit the seven defendants.
The juror was part of a trial that centers on the alleged theft of more than $40m from a taxpayer-supported food aid program for children.
All of the defendants were arrested after the juror revealed the alleged bribery scheme to the court.
"This is stuff that happens in mob movies," Assistant US Attorney Joseph Thompson, a government prosecutor, told the court as he requested the arrests.
“Let’s be honest, it wasn’t someone outside of this room."
The bribe occurred as the jurors were set to begin deliberating after one week of jury selection and five weeks of witness testimony.
Bribing a juror is a felony that carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. The seven people currently on trial - six men and one woman - already face a total of 41 charges including wire fraud and money laundering.
Prosecutors have argued the defendants - all of whom are Somali immigrants to Minnesota - operated their charity as a front to receive funds from the federal Child Nutrition Program.
Providing fake names of non-existent children they were claiming to feed and creating a fraudulent paper trail of how those numbers skyrocketed during the Covid-19 pandemic, the men allegedly pocketed millions of dollars.
Jurors were shown evidence of how this money was allegedly spent: on Porsche and Tesla convertibles, a luxury vacation in Dubai, real estate purchases in Kenya, among other things.
The joint defense has cast doubt on the FBI's sprawling investigation as well as on the credibility of the prosecution's star witness.
But six of the seven defense attorneys rested their case without calling any witnesses, while the seventh defendant took the stand himself.
With closing arguments due to wrap, Mr. Thompson disclosed the episode of attempted jury tampering that had taken place on Sunday night.
He said a woman had dropped off a gift bag filled with wads of cash at the juror's home.
“This is for Juror 52," the woman allegedly said. "Tell her there will be another bag for her if she votes to acquit."
Jurors in the case have not been publicly identified, as is common practice, but attorneys and defendants briefly viewed their names and addresses at the start of the trial.
Juror 52 is a 23-year-old woman who, according to the Sahan Journal, was the only person of color on the panel.
"This can't be allowed," Mr. Thompson said. "This strikes at the integrity of our system."
An FBI affidavit describes a black woman, “possibly Somali, with an accent, wearing a long black dress”, approaching Juror 52's home in a Mazda.
The juror was not at home but her father-in-law reportedly answered the door, collecting the white bag packed with $20, $50 and $100 bills.
Juror 52 immediately reported the incident to local police and turned over the money to the FBI. She was excused from the jury on Monday.
US District Judge Nancy Brasel agreed with prosecutors that “someone obviously has the addresses of the families of these jurors”, ordering the detention of all seven defendants.
The court later granted a search warrant that led to the confiscation of cell phones belonging to the defendants.
The men were escorted from the court in handcuffs, some openly weeping and embracing their family members before they were led out.
Judge Brasel questioned all the remaining jurors to determine whether they had experienced something similar.
In a rare move, she also "reluctantly" sequestered the jury for the remainder of the trial, removing them from all outside contact and barring their use of electronic devices until the trial has finished.
Monday's twist was the latest in an investigation that has seen prosecutors indict 70 people. Eighteen defendants have so far pleaded guilty and the government has recovered about $60m of the stolen funds.

Another case of having a good play but your greed over powers your common sense. Why the fuck couldn't the just take a million a piece and calm the shit down?? GREED! oh well I don't feel sorry for these idiots. Leave a comment on what you think about this story.

2024.06.06 18:06 mcm8279 [Tos Trivia] SlashFilm: "The One And Only Time Star Trek: The Original Series Showed The Federation Flag" "Star Trek" has all the visual trappings of tribalism while constantly preaching anti-colonialist philosophies. This may be why one doesn't see a lot of flags in "Star Trek."

SLASHFILM:
"Because "Star Trek" is set in a presumably idyllic future — when war is at an end, money has been removed from the equation, and diplomatic togetherness rules the day — one will see few open displays of tribalism or jingoism. No one in "Star Trek" can yell about how much they love their country because, functionally, there are no countries. At least not on Earth.
Occasionally, Chekov (Walter Koenig) will express pride, or even smugness, about his Russian heritage, but his attitude couldn't be read as "patriotism." Instead, he has become a smaller part of a large human tapestry, now united and working together to explore the galaxy, expand knowledge, and share ideas.
Perhaps ironically, the widespread multiculturalism of the United Federation of Planets is dressed in military uniforms and sails about the heavens in starships armed with phasers and photon torpedoes. "Star Trek" has all the visual trappings of tribalism while constantly preaching anti-colonialist philosophies. This may be why one doesn't see a lot of flags in "Star Trek." Characters don't pledge allegiance to a flag in "Star Trek," but make oaths to protect all life, keep fighting to a minimum, expand their knowledge, and uphold the open-minded progressive ideals of Starfleet. It's no mystery why the Starfleet "delta" symbol points upward.
There is a flag for the United Federation of Planets, but it was only on-screen in one episode of the original series: "And the Children Shall Lead" (October 11, 1968). Weirdly, the episode has nothing to do with the workings of the Federation, nor intergalactic politics. One cannot say why the UFP flag was employed here.
[...]
The episode's early scenes see the children obliviously playing tag among their parents' graves, and one of them knocks over a UFP pennant. Captain Kirk (William Shatner) hoists it up and replants it in the dirt.
The UFP pennant would be the only on-screen Federation flag in "Star Trek" until "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" in 1982. Naturally, enterprising fans would make their own pennants, and expanded universe lore and nerdy sourcebooks would have plenty of diagrams explaining the pennant and its meaning. In Joseph Franz's 1975 book "Star Trek Star Fleet Technical Manual," the pennant was sketched out in detail, but in black and white, explaining that the lettering should be white and the stars should be silver. This color description, as one can see above, doesn't match the on-screen version from "Children." There is no explanation as to why there are 13 stars on the pennant, as the Federation was founded by four worlds: Earth, Vulcan, Andoria, and Tellar.
[...]
Weirdly, in the 2013 film "Star Trek Into Darkness," the alternate universe UFP flag would still feature the starfield and the olive branches, but the starfield was superimposed over a "cogwheel"-shaped gear-like image. Around this time, the UFP flag started to be handled like an American flag at military functions, not only draped over officers' coffins, but meticulously folded and handed to others as a symbol of mourning and respect. The folding took place in the "Star Trek: Discovery" episode "All is Possible" (November 9, 2021).
Trekkies, meanwhile, are perfectly fine to spend their mid-capitalist dollars on "Star Trek" merch slathered with the UFP flag. My current mousepad sports the logo. "Star Trek" may be above jingoistic devotion to a flag, but we here back in the 21st century still love to let our fan flags fly."

2024.06.06 05:51 rexmanningday00 Welcome

Hi! I was in the 1997 tour with Joe Machoda as Joseph as part of the St. Francis Xavier School choir. We were the launch of the tour and I still know every single color.
I only learned recently that the show almost didn’t go on for us. There was an extreme lack of support from the school administration and a lot of the parents. We had to be removed from the stage for the portion that you can find in chapter 39 of Genesis. Even with that change made the school was not happy and teachers refused to give any of the 30 students involved any break on the due dates or amount of homework assignments or other projects test, etc. do their regular classes during that time to students were forced to work overtime. & teachers refused to give any of the 30 students involved any break on homework assignments or other projects due, etc. But Judy Pyle and her singing Saints prevailed.
I was in 6th grade then and to date it’s one of my favorite life experiences. Assuming I am not alone in this I thought it would be awesome to have a place for all of us to connect and share stories about what was one of the high points of my childhood.
