2024.05.13 21:30 hunter180 There's something wrong with my laptop

I’m typing this on my phone because I’m too scared to use my laptop. I threw it into the back of my closet and covered it with clothes to try to dampen the high-pitched ringing sound it keeps emitting, but I can still faintly hear it from where I’m sitting in the living room. I tried shutting it down – it wouldn’t turn off. Doesn’t restart either. I closed the screen but that didn’t do anything. Tried to let the battery die and once it hit 0%, it stayed on as if it were fully charged. This thing can’t be turned off. I’m sure this all sounds silly and nobody is going to believe me, but there is something wrong with my laptop.
The easiest option would be to just get rid of it but I’m tight on cash and my job requires a laptop. I’m a marketing assistant at a small creative agency. It’s not the most glamorous job, I mostly fill out grids and review decks but it took me nearly a year to find this position. It’s completely remote which is a plus, the benefits are decent, and the pay is low but it’s something.
I was hired about a month ago. I hadn’t bought a laptop since 2017 and I wore out my last one so badly it basically refused to hold a charge and had to be plugged in all the time. I thought it made sense to get a new one – a new job, a fresh laptop, the beginning of a new career era. All the new Apple models are insanely overpriced, well above my price range. I could buy a new one in a few months after I save up a bit, but I needed something asap.
I browsed the internet and found a used electronics site. They refurbish phones and laptops and resell them at an affordable price – perfect. I found a 2022 Mac, placed the order, and it was delivered less than a day later. I actually think there were only three hours between purchasing the laptop and it showing up on my doorstep.
Excited to get it set up, I ripped open the box and sitting atop the neatly packaged laptop was a jet black business card with small white lettering in an odd font choice.
HANTER’s REFURBISHMENTS
Thank you for supporting small businesses. Enjoy your product.
609-3006
Ignoring the card, I threw it away and dug into the laptop. Beautifully dark brushed metal, no trace of fingerprints anywhere. It looked almost new save for a couple of scratches on the underside. I plugged it in, turned it on, made a new user profile, and clicked through the setup guide. The setup screen faded away and the preloaded wallpaper appeared. It didn’t really look like the typical Apple wallpapers that we’re all familiar with. Not Big Sur or the Sierra Nevada’s. It was a landscape photo of a farmhouse sitting in a field of tall yellowing grass, a single oak tree bending its awkward limbs over the decaying porch. There was some dark beauty to it. The sunset behind the farmhouse cast bands of golden light on the grass making it appear as if it were shimmering. Maybe it was taken on the East Coast? Some farm in New England? Didn’t really matter to me. I had a new laptop and it was working perfectly. I gave my ancient 2017 one a quick eulogy and tossed it.
– – –
- Good morning! Marie needs the TOOTHPASTE deck to go out by EOD for client review.
-- Morning! Got it, should be ready by afternoon. I’ll upload it to Monday and ping you when it’s up.
- Thanks!! :)
The first time I noticed something was the next day. I was sitting at my desk going over my bosses notes on a deck for some toothpaste commercial when I minimized my Chrome window and saw something I hadn’t noticed before. On the front porch of the farmhouse was a figure sitting in a rocking chair. I brought my face closer to the screen to try to make out any details but the farmhouse was so far in the distance, the scale of the figure was smaller than the cursor. It was so tiny I guess I just hadn’t noticed the day before. It’s not like anyone really stares at their computer wallpaper. The figure had a pale white face and was draped in some sort of black cloak but again it was so tiny I was basically making guesses. I shrugged it off and went back to Outlook to keep working – I had a deadline to meet.
My bedroom darkened as evening fell, the only source of light being the blue glow of my laptop. I uploaded the deck and sent a note back to Marie to let her know I was finished. I’d gotten so caught up in the day that I had forgotten about the figure in the rocking chair. I went back to the wallpaper and studied the landscape again before deciding to just change it to another preloaded one. Something less spooky. I chose a sunrise off a blue coastline.
I love watching Netflix in bed as I fall asleep, so that night I got comfortable and logged in on my laptop to put some Arrested Development on. I must’ve been exhausted because I fell asleep almost immediately. I always just end up sleeping with my laptop either next to me on my comforter or on my nightstand and let the episodes keep going until Netflix realizes I’m no longer watching. I guess that must've happened, but at around 3:00a I bolted awake to a screeching ringing tone coming from my laptop. It was ear piercingly loud, almost at an unbelievable volume for a laptop. Gone was Arrested Development, the laptop screen was static white like an old VHS tv, illuminating my otherwise pitch black bedroom in a cloudy light. I scrambled to turn the volume down, afraid my neighbors would come banging on my front door, but the sound stopped as quickly as it had begun. The screen went dark, the room went dark, the night got quiet.
I sat and stared bewildered in a drowsy daze at my laptop, the quiet hum of cicadas in the night outside, when suddenly it felt as if I were being watched…. I could barely see my own hand in front of me. The night seemed darker than usual…I slowly turned over my shoulder to the open door of my bedroom and in the darkness I could just make out the faint silhouette of a hunched figure standing right outside the doorway. Staring right at me. My blood chilled, I froze. I fumbled for the lamp on my nightstand and turned it on. Warm light extinguished the blackness. Nothing in the doorway…just the long stretch of hallway to the living room. It felt kind of similar to that movie that came out last year, Skinamarink. You sit in the darkness of your bedroom long enough that suddenly you start seeing things in the inky black. I thought it was nothing, but I swear I could make out the faintest trace of a pale white face grinning at me.
The next day I’m back to work as usual, tired from the night before. I clicked out of Chrome to my desktop to open up Adobe when I noticed the farmhouse wallpaper was back… It had changed by itself. It wasn’t exactly the one from yesterday though, no, the figure wasn’t in the rocking chair anymore. Instead, the figure had moved off the porch and was now standing in the field, closer to where the photographer would be. I could really make it out now. A pale white grinning face with distended lips, rotting teeth. That wasn’t the worst part though. Where its eyes should be were instead empty pockets of nothing. Just completely grotesque, definitely not a fucking preloaded wallpaper for a laptop. I changed it back to the beach and dug around in my trash can for the refurbishment card that came with the package. I wasn’t going to wait around to see what happened. Maybe one of the tech guys there was playing a trick and had programmed some jump scares into the computer or something? Maybe that’s something they do. Similar to jailbreaking an iPhone or pretending to control someone's computer remotely. I don’t know.
I found the card and dialed the number. It rang once before a young woman with a pleasant voice picked up.
- “Hi, Hanter’s Refurbishments! How may I help you?”
-- “Um hey I recently ordered a laptop. It came the other day and setup was normal but there’s something going on with the wallpaper. I changed it but then it changed back by itself and the photo –.”
- “One moment let me place you on a brief hold. Thank you!”
I hadn’t even finished speaking when she cut me off and put me on hold. Hold music began playing, some upbeat jingle shrill enough to drive anyone insane. I sat on hold for twenty minutes, then an hour. I ended the call and tried again, went through the same motions with the same woman only to continuously be placed on hold. Maybe they were really backed up with calls and other people experiencing issues with their orders. I called again and instead of the woman answering, an automated voice greeted me and sent me to hold immediately. Fuck it. I decided to wait it out. The fucking jingle was boring a hole into my head – the most annoyingly enthusiastic hold music. I could’ve strangled someone.
Suddenly the music stopped. Finally, someone was becoming available to help me. But instead of the call being redirected to a person, the automated voice returned with a simple
“Goodbye!”
And the call dropped.
I screamed, I literally screamed out of agony, out of pure fucking frustration.
I turned back to my laptop. The wallpaper changed itself again, back to the farmhouse and the pale faced thing. It moved in the field again. It was getting closer. Gaping holes for eyes, distended lips wet with saliva. It looked like it was laughing at my misery.
I left my laptop closed on my desk that night. No Netflix tonight, I needed to sleep and didn’t want the computer near me. I scrolled on TikTok for a bit before I dozed off…
The jingle woke me.
The fucking hold music. I picked up my phone in my fatigue thinking maybe Hanter’s was calling me back. It wasn’t coming from my phone. It was coming from my closed laptop.
I looked to the doorway, thinking the figure from the night before would be back, before getting out of bed and crossing to my laptop to shut it off. I opened the laptop and a wave of nausea crashed over me. The pale faced thing was even closer. The farmhouse was barely visible now, its face nearly filling the entire screen. Still grinning, still laughing. Bits of red stuff wedged in its teeth.
No matter how many times I held the power button, nothing was happening. It wasn’t shutting down, the jingle wasn’t stopping.
I fucking cracked. At that point I didn’t give a fuck if I needed the laptop for work. I picked it up and smashed it on the floor. Threw it again and again till the screen was shattered and keys were flying off. I just needed the jingle to stop and the pale face to be gone. I threw it down one last time with a final blow, satisfied with the damage I’d caused.
I picked the laptop up thinking it would be dead, but the screen was still glowing with light. Through the splintered glass of the screen I could see the farmhouse, the field of yellowing grass, the rocking chair, the oak tree – everything was there except for the pale faced thing. As if my havoc had caused it to flee the wallpaper.
The screen flickered off. The room went black. The cicadas outside filled the silence.
The hair on the back of my neck stood up.
It felt as if I were being watched.

2024.05.13 07:23 EuphoricPenguin22 Mavica Gear: An $85 Starter Kit

This is from a Mavica-focused magazine I was working on entitled Floppy Geography. I'm putting it on infinite hiatus until I find more compelling article ideas to write. This is the only full-length article I have finished, so I thought it would be worth sharing here. If you want to use this article somewhere else or for something else, be my guest: it's licensed under the CC0 license. This was written a few months ago back in mid-March with some helpful feedback from the folks on Discord.
Mavica Gear: An $85 Starter Kit
Depending on how you look at it, Mavicas are one of the least expensive camera hobbies to get into. Sure, you can take pictures on your phone, but those don't have the look that you might be after. You can also use other digital cameras, but those offer a different experience than the Mavica lineup. If you think of Mavicas as bridging the gap between the physicality of film and the immediacy of digital photography, it's hard to think of anything else that fills that niche so perfectly. So, how much does it cost to get started with Mavicas? I've set a tentative budget for this article of $85 or less. We need to put more money up at the start to buy necessary accessories like batteries, disks, and a disk drive. After those are a part of your arsenal, additional cameras, for the most part, require the same batteries and disks, so you'll be ready to flesh out a larger collection on the cheap. I've broken this article into subtitled sections with more detailed descriptions of each thing you'll need. However, a full list and summary are available in the aptly-named Summary section.
Camera Choice
For beginners, it’s hard to pass up on the appeal of the FD7. In the United States, you can expect to pay $20-25 with shipping for this camera in used condition on eBay, although “untested” and “for parts” units are often available at a slightly lower price. Some untested cameras work just fine, but you might be gambling more with your money if the listing condition is marked as “parts only.” Beyond the relatively low price of the FD7, the FD5 and FD7 offer the unique feature of an analog camcorder sensor. This is obvious from a glance at the image files, which give everything it captures a VHS-like quality. There are newer models for a similar price, like the FD71, FD75, or even the much larger FD95, but I think these fail to capture the same level of newcomer magic the FD7 provides. In short, the FD7 arguably has the more popular aesthetic (in terms of photos and the camera itself), it can fit more full-quality pictures on a single disk, it's not absurdly expensive, and it’s a bit less camera bulk to haul around. If that sounds like what you’re looking for in a camera, the FD7 is the way to go.
Batteries
Most Digital Mavica models, including the FD7, use NP-F550 battery packs. Since most original battery packs fail to hold a useful charge, clone packs are your only real option. I’ve heard claims from several sources over the years that these clone batteries are incompatible with InfoLithium-equipped cameras, but this has never been my experience. NP-F550 clones may have failed to support InfoLithium years ago, but it seems this is no longer true. My FD200, one of the pickier units regarding InfoLithium, seems to have no qualms running on clone cells. Ensuring your batteries receive a full overnight charge and are seated properly is vital to ensuring you don’t get the dreaded “For InfoLithium Only” error.
Another issue that frequently pops up with these clone packs is fitment. The cells I have used tend to get stuck when you attempt to eject them, so I created something called a battery puller. It acts like a skin with a built-in pull tab, allowing you to pull the battery out cleanly without resorting to extreme measures. I’ll put more info in the summary section if you’re interested, but ribbon or twine can serve a similar purpose for free. If your batteries are currently stuck, strong double-sided tape or Velcro can help pull them back out. If you manage to get them unstuck, use one of the aforementioned solutions to ensure it doesn’t happen again. I recommend shopping around Amazon for the best deal but expect to pay around $20-25 for two batteries and a USB charger. Amazon is also a good option if you happen to find batteries that aren’t playing ball with your particular camera, as returns there tend to be a bit easier than eBay. Overall battery performance will depend on the specific capacity of your batteries, but my 2600mAh packs tend to last me several days of shooting.
Floppy Disks
There are many places to look for floppy disks, so my advice is to shop around to find the cheapest price for working disks. New old stock disks are likely to be more reliable than heavily used ones, but I’ve had no problems with the used disks in my possession. There’s an adage that disks manufactured earlier are made better and therefore last longer, but I can’t say whether that’s true. In my experience, both old and newer disks have performed the same for me. I don’t think I’ve had a floppy disk fail on me either, but I do my best to take care of them. If you treat your disks well, expect them to last a while. Regarding prices, expect to pay around $10 for a ten-pack of disks. You can consider purchasing fewer disks if you want, as the FD7 manages to put around 30 full-quality, 0.3 MP images on a single disk. I think a ten-pack is about the right amount if you ever decide to get more cameras, and it tends to be the smallest amount you can buy for a reasonable price online. Again, new is preferable, but used will work just fine. eBay tends to have a better selection and lower prices, so I’d look there first. Watch out for shipping, as that should be a part of your $10 price target; $15 is already a bit high, and $20+ is just unacceptable.
Floppy Drives
Like the new versus old debacle with floppy disks, many people feel the affordable Chinese USB drives available on places like Amazon and eBay are unreliable and not worth buying. My experience has been quite the opposite. I’m not saying they’re wrong in every case, but I still stand by the idea of buying something cheaper from Amazon and taking advantage of their return policy. If it craps out on you within the return window, you can send it back and recover your investment. As I write this, eBay looks to be a bit cheaper for these drives, but Amazon will probably offer a smoother experience for returns. Reasonable prices should be in the $15-20 range and anything more than that is worth avoiding.
Summary
Mavicas are one of the cheaper camera hobbies I’m aware of, and they provide a level of physicality akin to film formats without the mess or ongoing expense. The FD7 is the best option for your first Mavica for several reasons, including unique photo quality, decent battery life, and many full-quality photos per disk. Clone batteries do work, but you need something like a battery puller from stickeremporium.shop or some ribbon to keep them from getting stuck. Expect to pay around $10 or less for a ten-pack of disks; otherwise, you’re getting ripped off. Chinese floppy drives usually work, but make sure you have a dependable return policy in case they don’t.
Item Description Price Range with Shipping
MVC-FD7 Camera High-end first-gen Digital Mavica with a 640×480 analog CCD and 10x of optical zoom. $20-25
Clone NP-F550 Batteries and Charger Requisite battery packs and charger for using most Digital Mavica models. $20-25
Battery Puller Some method of pulling clone batteries out of the camera. $0-3
1.44MB IBM Formatted MF2HD Floppy Disks Requisite floppy disks to use with the FD Mavica line. $10 for 10 pack, or $1 per disk
Generic USB Floppy Drive Usable floppy drive for reading disks on most devices. $15-20
Grand total: $65-83
Conclusion
Mavicas are fantastic, and our community on Reddit has developed into an excellent place to share photos, ask for advice, and show off cool stuff. I think the community around Mavicas is what has kept me so interested in them for all of this time, and I think you’ll get sucked in as well if you do decide to go down this route. Mavicas offer a more physical experience while retaining the expected convenience of digital cameras, have incredibly unique image quality, and are pretty darn cheap once you get past the initial investment. I’ve paid $10-20 for most of my cameras, and I still use most of the same gear I picked up two years ago. If you want an obscure hobby filled to the brim with good fun and good people, I can’t think of anything I’d recommend more than picking up one of these weird old cameras and giving it a go.

2024.05.12 16:44 TheRealHarrypm Tape Transfer, Tape Digitisation & Tapeless Conversion Starting Guide (2024)

I hope this will be pinned as I want to provide a upto-date full-scope info dump on critical things that have changed over the last few years that people binging YT videos and old threads will be out of the loop on.
The Decode Wiki has a massive amount of information thats proacticly updated and mantained, so here is just a more camcorder format biased summary of a lot info there.

Rule 1

There is a thing called SAVE or LOCK tap on tapes, enable it on all your tapes before playing with them, this will save your ass from careless or just mistakes and stop your from erasing your tapes.

Cleaning & Service

Please do not treat mechnical kit like magic, it requires care and maintaince like a car or a rifle it has a lot of parts that need cleaning and oiling once and awhile or outright replacing like belts and capston rubber wheels.
Paper & 99.9% IPA never 60% etc (water + elecronics just no.) for VHS & Beta head cleaning.
Chamois Sticks (overpriced waste for all but camcorders) for small head cleaning.
Brush, Airblower, Super-Lube, Sowing Machine oil - Genreal cleaning & service.
Lens cleaning should always be with microfibeswabs to clean rims, UV Filters are your dust/shatter protection friends caps are also adviced during sunlight use!

PAL & NTSC

We are not all united in this world of standards per region, never forget the diffrances it can cost you time and suffering.
PAL 625-line (25fps 50 fields "25i") is Europe/Middle East to Russia 50hz grids
NTSC 525-line (29.97fps 59.94 fields "29.97i") is USA/Canada/Japan 60hz grids
Digital active area is 720x576i PAL and NTSC is 720x480i or 488
(there is also 608/512 height called IMX standard for preserving the VBI area both are in analog world sampled at 4fsc or 1135x625 PAL & 910x525 NTSC but only vhs/ld/cvbs-decode provide acesss to the full signal frame.)
NTSC-N/PAL-M/NTSC-50/PAL60 etc (South America and outhers who could not just stick to one unifyed system or slowly migrated with existing kit)
Recorded Media only has 3 flavors in common world use, NTSC/PAL then the french have SECAM or MESECAM for recorded tapes before moving to PAL.
Digital you will use and or encouter i.e 2000s era will only be NTSC/PAL (then flavors of HD in interlaced or progressive 25/24/29.97p) to keep things simple.
PAL decks (most 90's & 2000's decks) will play most MESECAM tapes, will play NTSC tapes also but the standard video output will have 4.43Mhz instead of 3.35Mhz colour subcarrier so NTSC native kit will not like it, such as Time Base correctors or NTSC CRT TVs so you will get B/W video out of a lot of PAL kit with native NTSC support too or it will be just PAL converted by a PAL DMR-ES10 for example.
The decks however are reading full NTSC or MESECAM signal off the tape so the video boards internally are converting the signal, but with direct RF capture will get you a native capture to work with and preserve analog tapes.

Digital Tapes

Massive Guide Here with full scope breakdown
Do NOT HOT PLUG, FireWire is 12v turn kit off hook up cable turn it back on, unless its a adapter from TB2 to TB3 to FW800 with low power data only then its most likey a full spec port with 12v 5A that can kill kit if ports are not clean and you hot plug it.
MiniDV/HDV/Digital8 FireWire Camcorders fall under
StarTech and 101 china brands make cards, I like DVgrab on Linux, but WinDV still works for most Windows Boxes & Final Cut still works on MacOS.

Digital Pro Tapes

HDCam / HDCam SR / DVCProHD / DigiBeta (digital betacam) / MPEG IMX etc
Some decks like DVC do have FireWire but HDcam and Digibeta flavors are all SDI
HDCam falls under SDI - Digital to V210 or FFV1 4:2:2
This applys to decks and camcorders you will be using SDI most likey but some had HDMI 8-bit 4:2:2 output like later HDV camcorders did.

Analog Tapes

VHS-C/SVHS-C/BetaMax/Betacam/Video8/Hi8
SVHS may have VITC timecode in VBI space, Hi8 can have PCM digital audio if shot with pro kit and RCTC data like time and date code on pro and prosumer models.
The best possible method for preserving tapes in the 21st century for analog Video and HiFi signals is The FM RF Archival Method then decoding it to S-Video/Composite in software then chroma-decoding it to YUV digital data all in software, no hardware TBC or this capture card is better then that capture card nightmare or limted codec support, it cuts through the noise (littorally) and plight of inflated hardware markets, VHS-Decode gives you a alternative for all analog tape formats dispite its name.
This is direct sampling of the orignal signals as the deck reads the tapes before its internal processing, this is the most affordable and technologically high quality preservation workflow that anyone can use today, cost of entry is sub 100USD and virtually all decks have test points. (but later decks will not have easy HiFi test points so 90s decks with a good cleaning first are your go to.)
You may even already own a CXADC compatible Hauppauge/WinTV or outher brand of capture card with CX chips the driver can use.
Sony 8mm or Hi8/Video8 and Digital8 with backwards playback support have test jigs that are plug and play for test points.
The older more well known method is deck with S-Video Time Base Corrector "TBC" ADC/Capture Card or a capture card with a TBC, this will cost you 2-20x the cost of a FM RF archival workflow thats with a basic office PC out of the skip basically added to the shopping list.

Making a Camcorder tapeless

Analog - S-Video/CVBS or Compoosite (Yellow RCA or 4-Pin Din for S-Video)
Digital - HDMI (but only HDV MiniDV camcorders had this so S-Video would be the best output in 16:9 squesse mode this applys to Digital8)
Cheep Analog SDI coverters off eBay using a 12v to USB-PD adapter will be the most powerful plug and play clean signal converting kit you can put into a Molle belt pouch or backpack with PD power adapters.
SDI is just HDMI with some more specs and piped over Coax cable orignally it replaced all the Coax copper lines that ran Composite or CVBS in studios and now its good solid locking interface for A/V world using the BNC connector from the 1940s and HDMI converters are a dime a dozen for SDI.
Digital8/MiniDV you can buy little off shelf USB adapters, but for later prosumer kit with NPF mount etc just buy a new 18650 cell based chinese battery they last all day long.
Recorders, Atmos, Blackmagic are your 2 go to brands today, but if you have a laptop just get a Magewell or GV-USB2 based setup and encode with VirtualDub2 or OBS if you like crunching stuff with realtime de-interlacing (its terrible for recorded media never should do it, but for live feeds you can get away with it in most cases as long as your system can keep up and use a codec like ProRes LT)

Power & Power Adapting

You can use 9v with stepdown or 5v with step up to power the 6-7.1v to 7.1 to 8.5v voltage range of camcorders, common batterys today are NPF, BP, V-Mount or Gold Mount with ARRI B-Mount slowing getting adaoption, but USB-PD or 20v 3A PD65W and 20v 5a PD100W power banks are now very cheep and provide more then enough to power most field portable kit.

Codecs & Containers & Chroma Sampling & Bit-Depth

Codecs and Cotainers is fun, but MP4/MOV is banned for archival, you will lose files, they break if the recording/encoding fails midway, do not trust them to store your audio and video memorys forever.
MKV/MXF are the only containers you should keep masters in if not DV/AVI at worst for HD and SD media today very much so if you have a home server with Jellyfin for example header dependent containers like MP4/MOV are poor for streaming locally and over the the internet on demand headderless don't care and are very relisaint if currupton happens you lose frames/seconds not your whole file.
(Note: you can easily re-mux a file from these safe containers for use on outher devices that require avi or mp4 etc its just a wrapper to hold the data, its easy to convert between the two without loss)
Codecs range from lossy compressed like AVC/H264 or HEVC/H265 (in MP4/MOV etc) to Lossy DV25 used for MiniDV/Digital8, to visually lossles like ProRes HQ, and the V210 for uncompressed and FFV1 today for lossless compressed.
Chroma Sub-Sampling is how much colour range data is stored per pixel, 4:2:2 is enough to use green screens and preserve the full range of live from camara Composite NTSC or PAL, ware as 4:4:4 is the same for HD era kit in very lay terms here but this is only for master recordings and for digitisaion.
Bit-Depth is simple 8-bit 256 range 10-bit 1024 range of colour, you want 10-bit almost always for inital capture in digital HD era and in Analog SD archival but can drop it to 8-bit 4:2:0 with careful encoding after the fact many videos on this that are clear and demo this.
For example though in this community DV is 4:1:1 NTSC and 4:2:0 in PAL so if using a Digital8 camcorder to ingest tapes from Video8/Hi8 your not saving the full range of colour and also using a lossy compressed codec at 25-30mbps great for 1995 but for 45-50mbps you can use lossless compressed FFV1 8-bit 4:2:2.

Deinterlacing

101 ways hardware and software converters, personally if your camcorder does not have a progressive or progressive pulldown mode, shoot in interlaced, use Hybird or StaxRip with the QTGMC filter via Vapoursynth or Avisynth its 3-5 clicks today and some copy paste at worst, dont use BDWIF or YADIF if you can help it, and always bare in mind lossy compressed interlaced footage will almost always have artifacts to fight with.
All Analog media in consumeprosumer world is interlaced and should be delt with in post for recorded media.

Final Notes

This is a fun subject that without basic EE/Cine/ENG world info being ingrained into your mind, its not very well condenced for people to get into without making massive mistakes or just ones that are sad to see due to lack of ah heres a nice list of key points to go and google and look into or sticky note on the kit.
I hope this has got you on the path of understanding key info in this era!

2024.05.12 14:12 natehinxman Help fine tuning settings.

Help fine tuning settings.
Recently picked up this CRT VHS DVD combo unit for free (less than $10 in gas and 0 slipped discs). Unfortunately the DVD player won't read any discs, even the "lense cleaning" disc that I tried to utilize. blasted it with duster and a vacuum but no luck. VHS works tho! it was so nice falling asleep to 3 Ninjas VHS on a CRT. indescribable.
that's all besides the point tho, so I grabbed a composite cable for my Model II Genesis. I definitely noticed improvement from my RF adapter and since this TV has no component in or s-video in I'm guessing that this is probably the best I can do hardware wise without upgrading my TV to something with component or s-video (avoiding scaler boxes because I'm not working with much money). I've noticed a small bar on the left side of the screen that seems to change color with the dominant background color. since this was visible with both RF and composite I'm assuming it's an issue with either the TV (I can deal with until upgrade), the Genesis (worst case scenario, willing to attempt repair), or hopefully just an issue with this game (Golden Axe is my only cartridge to test).
Moving over to the "software" side, I've included a few screen pictures of my available options right now. I've tried tweaking them a bit myself but I'm still pretty new to all of this so I'm sure it's not optimized. I've also included a couple videos of the game running with a close up of the screen. Sunlight is not an issue in this room as I have a basement appartment.
I'll also include a photo of my tv model incase that helps. Any advice is appreciated. Even recommendations of YouTube channels or videos that might help me get a better understanding of the whole process. Thanks in advance.
edit: appears I'm not able to attach videos to posts in this sub unfortunately. included some photos instead.
also, is there anything cool I can do with these outputs? I've connected it to my 4k thru the component out and it seems to look sharper on that screen but there's input and audio lag and tons of weird motion blur so I'm not really trying to play it on a 4k without a scaler and some beefy filters. lol

2024.05.10 02:26 Prestigious_Today860 [partially lost] "How to make the Cruelest Month" starring Clea Duvall (1998)

I've been searching for any more leads on the 1998 Clea Duvall film "How to make the Cruelest Month". It won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and the plot is as follows "Bell is a neurotic young woman living in a small college town who addresses the camera to explain her problems—her parents are splitting up, older sister Sarah is happily married with a baby on the way, and her younger sister Dot is involved with Bell's ex-boyfriend, Leonard. Noting that people rarely stick to their New Year's resolutions, Bell decides she wants to accomplish the goals of quitting smoking and finding love before the year's end. One night, Bell lures Leonard to a remote area, and in the middle of sex with him, she abandons him, leaving him without his clothes. Trying to find his way back home, Leonard stumbles into the home of eccentric married couple, Manhattan and Christina. As Bell realizes that she is actually "smoking more and falling in love less", she starts to wonder if she might be a lesbian and tries going on a date with a woman." as a sapphic who recently quit smoking I really want to see this lol.
I made a spreadsheet with reviews of the film and any possible leads, if you would like to help me with the search pls reach out & i'd b happy 2 give u edit access!
After researching, the only VHS copy there seems to be as of yet is at the UCLA film & TV archive. I reached out them about possibly getting a digital copy and they essentially stated that due to restrictions the depositor made on the VHS it cannot be duplicated. The only way it can be viewed is if a reservation is made prior (i believe you have to fill out an online form or email?) and going to the Film and TV archive in person to view.
I'm not quite sure where else I can go from here or where else I could look, I may just start emailing all credits associated I can find through the IMDB page. Any help would be much appreciated!!

Round 4 deadline: Monday 6th May, 10pm GMT

Hiiiii how is everyoneee?? So today we had to vote on which episodes will leave in the double elimination round. Most ended up with 0, 1 or 2 votes, but there were 2 of them (haha 2 of them) which got those one and two extra votes causing them to be eliminated. Sooo... which episodes are the next to go?
...
THE GREY LADY & ABOUT LAST NIGHT. The first two episodes of series 2 survived the tiebreaker, but it wasn't enough to keep them in the game for long. The Grey Lady gathered the most votes with 4, while About Last Night got 3, so both of them are now leaving the game.
Which episode will be the next to go? Which will make it all the way through to the end? It's up to youuuuu.
Vote for the episode that you like *the least. The episode that gathers the most votes will be eliminated with the **30th place in this game. Make sure you have watched all episodes before voting and don't vote more than once. (I don't think you can anyway)*

2024.05.05 23:27 michaelrhodes1954 New issues converting VHS to Digital

I have a Sony DVD/VHS player (no recording option) and have been successfully converting some older self-recorded VHS tapes to digital .mp4 using the Roxio Easy VHS to DVD software and connections and my Windows 11 laptop. After about 10 converted tapes, suddenly I get only audio, both in preview as I record, and in the final product file.
I let it sit for a few weeks while working on other projects, and happened to buy a new Windows 11 laptop in the meantime.
Last week I tried to use the Roxio setup again, but could not fully install on my computer. Seems there needs to be an upgrade, but the Roxio servers appear to be down every time I try. On top of that, my new laptop only has USB-C ports. So, I got a docking station with HDMI, USB, and USB-C ports, a new video capture card with HDMI input and USB-C output, and an AV2HDMI box. I plugged in my composite cables from the VHS player to the AV2HDMI box, set the box to 1080p (the other option is 720p, which I tried later, unsuccessfully), connected that to my capture card, connected that to my laptop first, then tried going through the USB-C on my docking station. I downloaded and installed both VLC and OSB software.
In both programs, just as in the Roxio on the older laptop, all I'm getting is audio - no video. I tried swapping out the yellow portion of the composite cable using a stand-alone RCA cable - still no luck. In each test case, I've also used a tape that I know successfully converted in the past.
Finally, I connected the VHS player to a television using the composite cable, and the tape plays perfectly, audio and video, on the TV.
In summary, I've tried three software programs, two video portions of the composite cable, two different HDMI cables, and two video capture cards, always using tapes that have successfully converted previously. In every instance, I am not getting video...only getting audio. The issue happens on both my older laptop and my newer laptop, but not the television. Both laptops are Windows 11. My current specs (very similar to the specs on the older laptop) are:
Processor 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700H 2.40 GHz
Installed RAM 32.0 GB (31.7 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Where do I go from here?

2024.05.03 15:56 Significant_Buy_2301 All current Protagonist identity possibilities (and my personal view on each of them).

The debate of who exactly are we playing as has been the subject of various debates. I will try to present all of them, as well as my personal view on each. Let's begin.
----------
- Option 1: The protagonist doesn't have a set identity. They are just a self-insert for the player to project themselves onto.
This is definitely the most disliked one and I can see why. It's really underwhelming and I really don't want it to be true.
One could argue that Poppy addressing the protagonist with they/them pronouns could be interpreted as evidence alongside the "Player" Youtooz figurine, although the equally likely explanation for this is that MOB doesn't want to reveal the Protagonist's gender just yet. Plus, if the protagonist is really a self-insert, why craft a backstory for them? Wouldn't it make more sense to leave the backstory blank so we could headcanon whatever we want?
Instead, MOB went out of their way to hint at the Protagonist being a high-ranking employee, likely complicit in the experiments. As such, I don't think that the self-insert option is very likely.
- Option 2: The Mystery Slide person
We all know about this ever since Chapter 2. In the slide hallway just across the entrance to the Game Station, there is a slide with removed letters spread out on the floor. Not much to add here, considering that we literally know nothing about this individual and thus this option is as equally likely as it is unlikely.

And now, with those two options out of the way, we are getting into established story characters and which one of them could be the Protagonist.
- Option 3: Rich Avery
This is the most popular option out of them all, even though I'm not personally convinced just yet. The argument goes that he's the character with the highest amount of reoccurring VHS Tapes and that he's established to really care about the kids. The argument goes that Rich being promoted to a high-ranking position, would explain the guilt of our player character.
But, honestly, I don't quite agree. If anything, Rich caring about the kids might disprove him being the Protagonist. He's the type of person who, upon learning about Playtime's atrocities, would immediately quit, go to the police and report everything. That or he would be Rowan Stoll 2.0. But the protagonist is implied to have been a high-ranking employee for years, complacent in their position. And even when Playtime went under after the Hour of Joy, we have no indication that they ever did anything about the kids still inside. If the police got involved in some way we don't know, but the factory is effectively still shut-off from the outside world.
Rich just doesn't seem a viable candidate for me.
- Option 4: P.W.
This is a completely new character, introduced in the Orientation Notebook. Basically they are a biologist for Playtime Co. and seem to be very high up, to the point where they know a lot of Playtime's dark secrets, even talking about Dr. Sawyer and his BBI program, showing that they are aware but complacent- which would closely match up with our protagonist. I can't add much myself, since the book isn't officially released yet and I'm only working with the Scholastic preview pages, but some people have gotten the book early and it's revealed that P.W. planned to quit on August 3rd 1995, but were persuaded to stay with their notes ending around this time, making it very likely that they were killed during the Hour of Joy.
- Option 5: Stella
This is still a possibility that I'm debating. Personally, I think that it would make sense with her character and the hallucinations we see. It would explain why MLL and Miss Delight condemn the player directly as well as feminine-like breathing in the gas mask.
-------------------
But what do you think the protagonist is, in your opinion?

2024.04.30 19:00 Thisvthat The Red Tint Affair: When Ghibli Fans Sued Disney

Here's a link to the video [08:47]

Transcript:

After taking Japan by storm when it was released in theaters in 2001, Spirited Away (Sen To Chihiro no Kamikakushi) was finally making its way to DVD, in Japan, during the summer of 2002. It hit store shelves on July 19, and, just like its theatrical release, it was a major success. Millions of tapes and DVDs were being shipped to stores, and it sold 1.4 million DVDs during the first week of its release. But something wasn’t right.
Within the first few days of its release, Studio Ghibli had received over 200 phone calls and emails about the DVDs. And it seemed like most of those customers were complaining about the same thing: a strange red tint that was applied to the video. When customers exchanged these seemingly defective DVDs for new ones, the issue didn’t go away. And some retailers had already started offering free exchanges–treating the DVDs as if they were defective. The most striking example of the issue came packaged with the DVDs. As a part of the set, there was a bonus disc that contained theatrical trailers. And those trailers looked a lot more like what viewers remembered, with no red tint.
In their report on the issue, ZAKZAK reached out to Studio Ghibli for comment. According to the studio, most of the complaints were about the DVDs, but there were some about VHS tapes as well. They were looking into the issue, but they weren’t sure what was causing the problem, “The color designer and cinematographer added color effects to the film to make it look as identical as possible to the colors seen in the theater, so it is not an abnormality.” They treated My Neighbor Totoro and Princess Mononoke the same way, but didn’t hear any negative feedback from fans. They notified Buena Vista Home Entertainment (Buena Vista), Disney’s home video division that owned the film’s distribution rights, and asked them to investigate.
On July 22nd, Buena Vista explained the situation to Mainichi, “For the bonus disc, we used the footage from the trailers we had on hand as they were, but for the feature film, it was adjusted after being examined by the producer, Studio Ghibli. It is not defective.” When they spoke to Studio Ghibli, they recommended that you set your television to a movie/theater mode if you wanted to adjust the color of the picture. But they also stated that, “There are no plans to change the color tones and resell the film.”
Buena Vista repeated the same language in an official statement on the issue they released the next day. At the same time, they started reaching out to retailers. In a sales manual obtained by ZAKZAK, they stated that, “Studio Ghibli cannot guarantee the picture or sound quality when played on a personal computer…” and recommended that customers watch it using a DVD player. When ZAKZAK reached out to Studio Ghibli about this, they decided not to comment.
The red tint issue–which some fans started calling “Terminator Vision”–elicited a variety of reactions from fans. Obviously, there were a lot of people who were upset with the change. But there were a fair number of people who either thought it wasn’t that big of a deal, since you could adjust the settings of your monitor, as well as those who welcomed the change. Seeing it as a deliberate creative decision by Studio Ghibli.
Despite continuing to receive complaints and negative reviews from customers online, Spirited Away DVDs continued to sell well. But these complaints did spark discussion on an issue that people didn’t really think about: how do Japan’s consumer rights laws apply to software? According to an article by Mainichi on the topic, as the laws were currently written, they didn’t. Despite the initial reaction by retailers, they may not have been legally obligated to accept the returns of the DVDs because of the red tint. According to a representative from the Japan Consumers Association, in order to request a return based on the Product Liability Law, there needs to be visible damage. And for it to fall under the Consumer Contract Law, “a ‘monetary contract’ for the purchase of DVD software is invalid if there is intent, negligence, or tort on the part of the manufacturer or seller, but there must be proof of ‘responsibility’ for the color tone, which is a matter of taste. Studio Ghibli has not changed its claim that the color tones in question are ‘colors decided by Ghibli,’ making it difficult for a third party to make a judgment.”
Complaints continued to pile up throughout the summer, but the first sign that things may be starting to change happened at the end of September. Japan’s National Consumer Affairs Center issued a warning to Buena Vista. They decided to test the DVDs themselves, and, “no extreme color anomalies were found." However, because of how quickly the complaints rolled in, they decided to ask the distributor two questions: what was their opinion on the reddish tint and how the product differed from the theatrical version, and how they were going to address the issue. Buena Vista responded by saying that any issues were probably caused when the film was converted to its digital format, and planned to address the issue by setting up a call center to receive customer complaints and printing the number on all packaging released after October. With that being said, they were going to continue to sell the product as it was, and didn’t have any plans to change it.
Things appeared to die down until November 28, when three people filed a lawsuit in the Kyoto District Court. It was a civil suit filed against Walt Disney Japan, and it claimed that, “the color tone is reddish and completely different from the movie theater.” And was not only trying to obtain color corrected DVD replacements, but 10,000 yen in compensation for each plaintiff. One of the plaintiffs was Tetsuo Otani, a lawyer who was also serving as the prosecuting attorney, who purchased the DVD in August. He was disappointed by the reddish tint and contained Buena Vista, but didn’t get anywhere. In order to see if he actually had a case, he decided to analyze the colors of the film using a histogram.
According to their analysis, the trailer on the bonus disc had an even color distribution between values 0 - 255 for red, blue, and green. And while the red values remained consistent in the actual movie, the values for green and blue were compressed to values between 0 - 180. This led the plaintiffs to the conclusion that, “the compression occurred equally throughout the entire film and was not intentional, but rather due to some accident or mistake in the production process.”
In an interview with Mainichi, Tetsuo Otani explained why they decided to seek 10,000 yen in compensation: “Since we were not injured, we decided not to seek a higher amount. This is not a trial for money, but rather a trial to question the defendant's attitude and response as a company. When I first sent the email, if Buena Vista had said, ‘It was our mistake, we apologize,’ it would not have become an issue and there would not have been a lawsuit. We believe, based on subsequent news reports and other information, that there is a problem with the company's response.” As for why they decided to sue Disney instead of Studio Ghibli, “Since we, the customers, do not know the relationship between Buena Vista and Studio Ghibli, we took the case against the distributor. However, in the course of the trial, Buena Vista may claim that they sold what Studio Ghibli told them to sell. We would like to talk to Director Hayao Miyazaki (in court) to find out what he thinks about this as the producer.”
In Buena Vista’s initial comment on the lawsuit, they said that they would discuss it with Studio Ghibli before releasing a response. But they did note that they saw the argument that the DVD looks different from what people saw in theaters as a difference in the way it was perceived. The trial didn’t pick up steam until the following February, when Disney tried to get the case transferred to the Tokyo District Court, but this motion was contested by the plaintiffs. On May 26, the court denied the motion to transfer and Disney would have to respond to the complaint by July 24th. On the 24th, Disney filed their response and stated that, “The defendant (Disney) merely duplicates and presses the DVD masters produced by Studio Ghibli (the producer). We are not involved in the selection of colors and tones, and we assume no responsibility whatsoever … the color tones were adjusted in consideration of the color temperature of Japanese television sets, and the pertinence of the color tones cannot be discussed in a court of law and should not be the subject of legal evaluation.” In order to demonstrate that the DVDs weren’t defective, the defense cited Studio Ghibli’s reasoning behind the color changes: “The color tone of the feature film is the color tone that has been adjusted and determined for the viewing of the film on DVD. The trailer is simply a bonus video." They decided to adjust the tone of the film because the temperature of Japanese televisions is whiter than movie theater screens. The master files were made on a monitor that was calibrated to match theater screens, and the footage was adjusted so that it would look the same on Japanese televisions. Studio Ghibli also noted that, “Since the main character is a 10-year-old girl who has entered the 'mysterious town' where humans are not allowed to enter, the overall color tone should not be clear and distinct to match the emotional tone of the main character. For this reason, we adjusted the image to warm and soft tones.”
But the plaintiffs disagreed with this argument. Tetsuo Otani responded by saying that, “Disney says that they are not responsible for the product because they only press and sell the masters, but it is natural that Disney is responsible for the product to the consumers who purchased it. The DVDs released in the U.S. do not have a strong red tint, and we would like an explanation for this difference. One of the reasons given for adjusting the color tone is the emotional state of the main character, but the conditions in this regard are the same in both theaters and DVDs, so the explanation is confusing."
The two sides traded reports and statements for the rest of the year, and well into 2004. Then, on May 14, the court asked both sides if a settlement was possible. And, on August 20th, the court formally recommended that the two parties settle and decided to draft settlement terms. Then, on September 10, 2004, the two parties agreed to settle. Here were the terms of the agreement:
  1. Defendant acknowledges and regrets any misunderstanding or confusion that may have arisen among some purchasers regarding the tint of the DVDs in question.
  2. In the future, when selling DVD versions of films distributed in Japan, if the producer made any adjustments to the master data in order to create the DVD version, the defendant will clearly state this fact and make other efforts to inform consumers that the images on the DVD version have been adjusted from the master data, so as not to cause any confusion.
  3. Plaintiffs waive their claims in this case.
  4. Plaintiffs and defendants mutually agree that they have no claims or obligations other than those set forth in this Settlement Agreement.
  5. The costs of the lawsuit shall be borne by each party.
So, at the end of this long, winding affair, the red tint still remains.

What do you call it when one company/business dominates in one area for years taking majority of the market and all their competition ends up going bankrupt short term or giving up completely? A Monopoly
Whenever people try to criticize this game, there is almost like this immunity from harsh criticism this game evokes from people because DBD is so special and truly a "unique" one-of-a-kind experience. There was good, healthy competition in the past like Evil Dead: the game, Last Year, or like VHS (video horror society) but DBD has like this hold on the market and players attention. DBD has unfair access to highly-valued horror licenses, they have the top spot on the Steam charts for horror, The sales from DLC and auric cells we don't know how all that money is divvied up between steam. Not to mention battlepass(rift) and the polishing of cosmetics and the store. Also the mobile game too is also highly lucrative and has its hold on mobile as well. One alarming thing to me about the store is how everything is monetized now. You as a player can't trade cosmetics from one friend to another but now you can even purchase charms, banners, and other cosmetics now via purchasing battle pass tiers. Also DBD is probably a more recognizable game for sticking around so long a lot of people can just recognize it from playing it in the past from PS PLUS, gamepasses, award events, tech demo events and stuff. People have this familiarity with this brand/product when any other asymmetrical horror game comes along it gets instantly compared to DBD and it's not a fair comparison when it has so much up it's sleeve vs a smaller indie dev team starting out it's almost like any competition wouldn't even have a chance.
Players are getting nickled and dimed for cosmetics they already bought on previous platforms, the battlepass skin you grinded so hard for can be purchased for $50 by purchasing tiers. Or it'll pop up again in the store months later for $10-$20. They won't add a competitive mode from a casual one. There are no leaderboards or in-game rankings so if you don't record yourself doing something it all vanishes and there is no point in really trying but the game's culture is sweat as hard as possible in every match.
The reluctance to actually change or add more meaningful QOL game mechanics, instead adding perks that will mostly be purchased via auric cells. They are scared to add new tiles anything that breaks from the traditional pallet loop gym window vault thing is rare. There aren't like little crouch walk holes or maybe like trap doors or something to be setup by killers. I saw a little bit of something on Nostromo wreckage with the little air vent things and stuff. Or like how the doors open only on Gideons when certain gens are done. There's so much that can be done to make the gameplay so meaningful and add depth to it without taking away from the existing experience.
As 7.7.0 the game's engine has been updated to Unreal 5 which is good, but the rubberbanding, the flashing, the invisible clipping to invisible walls. Like what is this? Solo Q survivor is unplayable you don't know if the other people's internet or yours is going to make you rubberband and stick you in place. I was getting 20+ errors from booting up the game. That has never happened to me. Just from logging in or queuing the consecutive error messages back to back after each match booting you out.
TLDR; My argument may fall on deaf ears but what I'm saying is when you're the only McDonalds on the block nobody really notices how greasy and fatty your burgers are. They have no real comparison to make and they don't care how much the burger costs or how long they need to wait in line. It's like the same people asking for the same stuff to be added so long. Add ranked, add in-game voice chat, give players P100 skins for their respective characters, change offerings, myer's addons. People around here just throw their hands up and say "it is what it is." and that's DBD for so long. It does a disservice for the players whenever we try to improve this game there is no competition so all the arguments are dismissed as heresy.

HELP! I cracked this screen
Hello electronicsrepair,
l'm hoping to get some advice, help, and insight on this microelectronics device I have that I cracked the screen. This is an open flash tablet v2 used to tune cars adjusting fuel and air ratios, rpm shift times, launch control, all the fun stuff in a sports car but juiced up. I attached photos of the device and there is what appears to be a part number on the screen in very fine print. The number reads: PJ TP4301C22A 0606 I'm unsure if this is a product code or just a serialized numbered part with a manufacture date code. I bought this product over 2 years ago. What I'm hoping to achieve is removing the old screen and replacing. I believe I have the skills and tools such as an industrial heat gun to heat the solder, tin solder with flux, as well as a fine tip soldering iron. I've been unable to find anything on this screen or item. A new one of these units is about ~550USD and a used one is not much less than a new one. Any help is greatly appreciated I'm not even sure what other communities to post too. Thank you all, and have a great day.

2024.04.20 22:11 pbarnes23 The DoppelUber (Part 3)

(Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4)
The magic ultrasound wand slopped through the jelly on Emma’s stomach. “The hell d’you put in the bean dip??” Emma flung at me from the exam table.
“Beans!” I screamed accurately.
“Please don’t upset her,” Dr. Lukavic pleaded, trying to get an image on-screen.
Ted was now our neighbor just down the hospital hallway with a nasty case of botulism. Personally, I didn’t think the exorcism we witnessed was botulism.
Emma changed the topic to another grievance, “And why didn’t you do anything when he was hitting on me?”
“I didn’t know you wanted me to,” I said without an eyelid flutter.
“Of course, I wanted you to!”
On the ultrasound monitor, it one of my daughters had pole position in the womb. She reclined in front of her twin, hogging the screen to herself. She’d probably be an actress or a TikTok-er. She gazed through the screen at her fool of a father, delivering a pre-emptive dose of disappointment that would be regularly revisited throughout life. Just then, her twin’s face appeared behind.
A half-smile at her lips.
I rocketed to my feet and clattered into an expensive medical device.
“What’s wrong with you?” Emma wondered, reading Lukavic’s mind.
“Did you see that?”
“See what?” Our daughter floated peacefully in the amniotic fluid. No smiles, half or otherwise.
“You’ve been acting very strange.”
“What do you want me to act like, Emma?”
“A father maybe!”
“I don’t even know if the babies are mi—!”
I tried to swallow the words but it was too late. Dr. Lukavic gasped. Like, audibly gasped. Of course I didn’t mean it like Emma took it—like how it precisely sounded—I knew she’d never have an affair on purpose. But like, the guy looked an awful lot like me. Emma’s response was inevitable.
“Don’t come home tonight.” She was out of there as quickly as possible, and I didn’t try to stop her.
Dr. Lukavic broke into an unwanted story. “I had a patient once, everything was normal. A bit of gestational diabetes but nothing we couldn’t manage. Around the sixteenth week of pregnancy, she started talking about visits from her sister. She refused to have an appointment unless her sister was present. Wanted me to grant the sister access to her medical records. But there was no sister. She never had one. She became convinced her long lost twin had come into her life to welcome the baby together. She also was convinced her husband wasn’t the father, despite the paternity tests. We treated her for pregnancy psychosis, but things got worse. Excessive stress induced labor at eighteen weeks. She lost the baby.” Dr. Lukavic placed a hand on my shoulder. “The Doppelganger isn’t real, James, but its effects can be.”
As I swung on my coat to leave, my hand bumped against an object in the pocket. By the time I realized I was withdrawing the severed finger, it was too late. Pro tip: when your wife’s gyno is doubting your diminishing sanity, pulling a decaying human finger from your pocket does little to allay concern. With nothing left to lose, I placed it in his gloved hand and actually uttered the words, “CSI this shit.”
I stood in the doorway of Ted’s hospital room, watching his dumb face sleep. Beeping monitors and hissing machines played Beethoven’s 5th Hospital Symphony. Just because I didn’t cause his predicament didn’t mean I couldn’t enjoy it.
The room suddenly grew cold. My breath became visible. The hairs pricked on the back of my neck. I heard the crackle of ice crystals spiderwebbing across the window. I felt the presence of someone—or something—behind me.
“Are you family?” a nurse questioned from the doorway.
“No I’m uh…” I stammered, looking down, horrified to see a pillow clutched in my white-knuckled fingers above Ted’s face. “A friend,” I managed.
“A family member will need to sign for his discharge tomorrow.” I secretly wondered if they’d call him an Uber. I heard the disappearing clack of footsteps and slid the pillow underneath Ted’s head. His iPhone sat in an Imagine Dragons case on the bedside table. I raised it to his face and unlocked the screen. I flicked to his Uber app, changed his password, and was out before I even knew the plan. I figured I had until his discharge tomorrow before he realized I was in his account.
I had 24-hours to find the Doppelganger.
It was 2:37am, and there was no sign of the Doppelganger. I’d been Ubering on Ted’s account for fourteen hours straight, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t taking time to enjoy the small things. “Thank you for riding with Ted,” I said to my pax, placing a hand on his thigh. He scurried out of my car, and in record time – ding!
REVIEW RECEIVED: 1 Star
Suck it, Ted.
A new ping came in. $3.53 fare. 2.3 mile trip. Pickup 0.9 miles away.
Accept. Both times the Doppelganger had landed in my Uber were under different user accounts, so I couldn’t be selective. I had to cycle through as many rides as possible in the next ten hours to find him and ask my question.
A young professional slipped into my car sipping a boba tea. I never understood boba. It tasted okay, but the balls, man. Every time I adjusted to the sweetness of each sip, a ball would whack me square in the lips. Mmm this is actually pretty yummy—BALL!—pretty yumm—BALL!—prett—BALL! BALL! BALL! BALL! BALL—
Emma hadn’t answered my calls since the ultrasound heard round the world. I apologized over voicemail and text message. What I said was inexcusable. It’s just that the twins were coming, and I had no way of making money and this Doppelganger thing, Ted’s cheap wine, his stupid fucking commentary, “You know what I’d take if I was him?” The way he touched Emma’s belly! Pretended to speak to my babies! My babies—!
Ding!
REVIEW RECEIVED: 1 Star
It was from the boba ball girl. I didn’t remember even dropping her off.
bzzz bzzz. A text from Emma! I opened to a picture of a paternity test confirming my fatherhood with the searing note:
Now do you believe me?
I wanted to tell her I was a stupid dumdum, and I never considered she’d cheat! I wanted to wrap my arms around her and never let go! Just wait, I was gonna be the best father to those two precious girls! As a physical response to the category 4 neurological hurricane brewing in my brain, I suddenly slammed the CR-V to a halt in the middle of the road. When I looked up, I couldn’t believe where I’d driven.
The faded lettering above the glass double doors read FOREST ACRES SENIOR LIVING. I can’t say I walked there, because I didn’t. My feet carried me against my will. And yes, the CR-V sat unoccupied in the middle of the road.
I stood in the doorway, regarding the prune of a man staring out the window from his wheelchair. My voice managed to crack in a single syllable.
“Da—d.”
The old man craned his head around, and we were face-to-face for the first time in decades. His eyes sat deep in his skull like cavernous craters. His powerful jawline stretched wrinkled skin like steel girders. He had a good head of hair for his age, even if it looked like steel wool.
“Do I have a brother, Dad?” The question was in itself absurd, but so were our circumstances. My father needled the depths of my soul through constricted eyes, as if holding the moral high ground. Laughter exploded from his chest with such force I thought it might tear through.
“Remember our last trip, Dad?” I could tell he did. “The night we came home from Disney World, Mom made me chicken pot pie. Her makeup was smudged under her eye. I told her about the trip. What we ate and the rides we rode. Epcot. You had a broken nose. Someone had jumped you outside a business meeting but didn’t take anything. ‘Could’ve been worse,’ you said. By that point, I was old enough to know our trips weren’t about father-son bonding. It wasn’t enough for you to sneak around on Mom, you had to include me. We ate, and we lied, and I didn’t tell Mom about the smudge under her eye. I didn’t want her to know I knew she’d been crying.”
It was unlikely he’d remember this conversation, but if he did, I wanted it to be the following, “Next time I saw her, she was on her stomach hanging from a doorknob. You had to research how to do something like that.”
All Mom ever wanted was for someone to ask about the smudge under her eye, and I never did.
I broke eye-contact before he could see the tears welling. I was at the doorway when he finally spoke. “There’s no brother. I didn’t want another after you. My. Perfect. Boy.”
Fuck you for making me complicit. Except I was a coward. “See ya round, Dad,” is what I said.
As I Frogered traffic toward my car in the middle of the street, I took an incoming call. Dr. Lukavic declared without context, “Nothing.”
“Huh?”
Lukavic stammered, “I ran the DNA of the—uh—well the digit—there was nothing there. The DNA was blank.”
“Like you couldn’t get a good sample?”
“No.”
HOOONNNNNNKKKKKKKKKKKK. A driver took exception to me standing in the road.
Dr. Lukavic’s tone soured, “The sample contains DNA structure. The double helix are present. They’re just… empty. Like whoever the finger belongs to has no DNA. Like they’re not…” He didn’t finish the sentence, and he didn’t have to. “Human” was the word he left out.
When I slid into the CR-V and adjusted my rearview mirror, there he was in my backseat. Like a second-generation VHS copy that lost its humanity in the dub. And those eyes, those black fucking eyes. I wanted to ask if he was responsible for Margot with a “T.” If he poisoned Ted. If he was the father of my twins, tricking Emma into conceiving with someone that looked just like me. And what was he doing in my car? In my life?
You invited me in.
Suddenly I was back in Orlando, trailing Dad under cover of night. The Salty Fish Bar. I didn’t enter; I was only twelve and didn’t want him to know I was following. He thought I was back at the hotel. I spied through the window as he greeted a middle-aged brunette and kissed her full upon the mouth. I grit my teeth and felt a terrible rumble rising in my head…
You always invite me in.
Memories flashed my brain—
Margot with a “T” exited my car…her one-star rating dinged my phone…the rumbling in my head grew louder…
The Doppelganger held up his right hand, spreading three fingers and a thumb. A stump where his pointer finger once was. One down—
…a spitball hit me in the face and rolled to Mr. Maliborski’s feet…I got a detention, same as the bully who fired it…Maliborski’s tires slashed that night…they didn’t believe I didn’t do it and I was expelled…the rumbling grew still louder…
CRUICK! The Doppelganger broke his middle finger in half—
…crouching behind a car watching Dad exit The Salty Fish…arm around his companion… rumbling growing louder and louder…my temples pounded…my brain screamed…couldn’t take much more—FWUMPP!—a fist connected with Dad’s face...a mysterious man stood above my father…who was he…where did he come from…I was intoxicated with justice as the figure swung at my father again—CRACK!—and shattered his nose…
CRUICK! The Doppelganger snapped his right ring finger—
Only his pinky remained, standing tall above the other mangled fingers. Who did this last finger represent? Who did the Doppelganger want me to hurt?
My cell buzzed me from dreadful thoughts. Emma! I quickly answered, “Honey?”
“It’s time!"
“What do you mean?”
“The babies--!”
“But it’s too soon!”
“THE BABIES...!!”
“Emma? Emma!” but she was gone.
The Doppleganger began to bend his pinky sideways—crrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii—the terrible stretch of bone—iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii—until the bone snapped—ICK!
No. Not Emma.
She uses you.
But I love Emma!
She has wronged you.
I would NEVER hurt her.
She pursues her dream. While you abandon yours. Emma must pay.
The doors locked. The gas pedal depressed. The CR-V blazed down the road. I tugged at the wheel and stomped on the brakes, but I couldn’t gain control. As we threaded traffic, images of Emma began to race. Twelve-year-old Emma smiling at the boy with the statistics answers. Me at the altar, gazing upon the woman inexplicably walking down the aisle toward me. Emma revealing her pregnancy to a man that looked like me but wasn’t me. None of them were. The twelve-year old in statistics. He now looked like the Doppelganger. The man marrying my precious Emma. Doppelganger. My precious daughters…
We fishtailed across lanes of traffic and straightened out, hospital in our sights. I wasn’t in control. I never was. I’d gone along with my father’s sins, picked apart my mother molecule by molecule. I’d allowed pax to emasculate me countless times a day. And now I was sacrificing my ambition so that Emma could purse hers! I was a passenger in my own life! All I’ve sacrificed for Emma! I didn’t even know if my babies were even mine!
I am your courage.
The Doppelganger was right. It was time to stand up for myself.
We raced at the hospital entrance. The speedometer needled 75…80…85…No! I could never hurt Emma! I loved her and the babies! I’d do anything to protect them!
I unbuckled my seatbelt, looked him in the eyes, and said something I’m proud of to this day—
“You ain’t shit, DoppelFucker.”
I yanked the wheel with all my strength, the CR-V veered off the path and—WHAMM!—into a tree, rocketing the Doppelganger and I through the windshield—CRISHH! We skidded across the pavement, and the world went dark.
I figured a brush with death would teem with philosophical epiphanies and earth-tilting-off-its-axis revelations. But as I dangled in the in-between, all I heard was a joke Ted told once.
What do you call a Billie Eilish Doppelganger?...............Billie Eilish-~ish~. Over and over and over and over and over and over and over…
beep beep. beep beep. beep beep…
My eyelids cracked. Though I’d tried my best for the alternative, I was alive. I turned my head to the heaving beeps and hisses of machines wired into me. Turning my head hurt. Noted. I leaned upright with great effort, dragging IV lines forward. So did sitting. I was alone in a hospital bed. I slid to the floor, pleasantly surprised my legs didn’t give out. Each slap of tile against my skin hit like fire. Walking was excruciating. Super to know! I peered out the window. As the sun’s flares diminished and my eyesight adjusted, blurred objects came into view. A car…an SUV…a tow truck dragging it away from a tree. A CR-V. My CR-V! There was an accident, I think? Emma had gone into labor! It was all coming back. Though seeing my car as an accordion made me wonder about the status of my face, a more important thought overtook me – it was the same day as the accident! Maybe I hadn’t missed my daughters’ birth!
I raced down the hospital hallway like Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas day, past doctors regarding me with a mixture of pity and horror. I resisted a Brazilian nurse with an off-putting amount of blood on her scrubs trying to physically drag me back to my room. It must’ve been a sight to get a Jerry Maguire line from someone who looked like Frankenstein or Frankenstein’s monster or whatever, but here we were.
“I’m looking for my wife.”
“Emma Wiggins?”
I nodded, and she led me down the hallway. The glares of passersby assured me my face was a Jackson Pollack. The only thing that mattered was Emma and the babies. The nurse stopped in the doorway of a room. “She’s a trooper. Was a close one,” she offered with a dollop of judgement. I noticed a ladybug skittering across the threshold, and marveled at the universe. It gave Emma a guardian when I couldn’t be there.
squitch! The nurse’s foot exploded the ladybug.
“In my country, it’s bad luck for a ladybug to visit a pregnant lady,” she declared. Looking upon the firework of green pus, I resisted the urge to tell her in my country ladybugs are considered sweet creatures. As I looked closer, however, I noticed something else. Something unsettling.
The ladybug had two heads.
I edged toward Emma’s bed as if approaching a ghost. Tubes ran into her nose. Her rosy face belied a struggle I wasn’t around for. Her eyes opened with a flutter. I refused to cry. I wasn’t entitled to tears. I searched her face for signs of hatred, or worse, indifference.
“I failed you—failed our babies. I missed their birth. I’m so so—"
Emma’s hand touched mine. She was an angel. “Promise me,” she said in a strained voice more powerful than the sweetest song. “You’ll never—mention—the Doppelganger— again.”
“I promise,” I said, desperately wanting it to be true...

2024.04.18 01:14 NickFromNewGirl 2024 Summer Project: CSU Lost & Found Media

As I've gone back into the history of CSU Rams games, I've noticed a concerning lack of content. Major games in CSU's history aren't available anywhere online, and without some kind of archive from CBS Sports, The Mountain, or ESPN, these games are likely "lost media." For example, the 2013 CSU basketball team nearly every game missing including: the home comeback against SDSU, the NCAA tournament game versus Missouri, home versus UNLV. The 2016-17 era and this team seem to only exist in clips.
I'm thinking, collectively, we could come up with a good amount of these, and since there's not much going on this summer, we could track down and get a centralized location for these historical CSU games, both football and basketball. If there's a major volleyball game or women's basketball game I should get, we can definitely add it to the list, too.
Notes:
What's surprising is the more recent the games are, the less likely we are to find the full versions online. Blame DRM, YouTube policies etc., but people don't record via VHS anymore and DVR libraries notoriously delete old content when you're not paying attention.
