Spring Bingo Wrap-up

2024.06.07 08:09 Killmepl222 Spring Bingo Wrap-up

Crappy summary: Shy, anxious FMC is suffocated by her shitty hypochondriac parents and takes a chance on scarred army captain MMC.
Thoughts: one of my favorite tropes is gruff, scarred dudes taking in the sweet wounded bird. It seems like Mimi Matthews likes this trope too, considering I've read two other books of hers with the same premise (and does it so well). 4.5⭐
Crappy summary: FMC comes for a hunting competition on MMC's planet, ends up getting married for her altruism and so she doesn't die.
Thoughts: I really love Regine Abel's world building and plotting. She has such a clean, immersive writing style too. Things just made sense. I enjoyed this one more than the first in the series. The characters had more depth. 4⭐
Crappy summary: soldier fmc's new squad leader drives her to distraction while she's in the field, leading her to confront him for some relief.
Thoughts: I loved this. It's now in my pantheon of sexiest things I've ever read. It's less than two hundred pages but the depth and scope of the characters, relationship progression and steam made it feel longer (in a good way). 5⭐
Crappy summary: FMC goes into hiding as a knight to flee from her scary stepmother and terrifying betrothed, only to find herself having said betrothed as a mentor.
Thoughts: this definitely wasn't bad. I enjoyed the parts where the MMC had a minor crises of being attracted to his squire. I think sometimes the writing got repetitive (I can't remember how many times 'manly' or 'unmanly' was used, but it was too much) and it got bogged down by annoying side characters. 3⭐
Crappy summary: FMC goes AWOL from the army and ends up in the mmcs' barn, where they grudgingly take her in.
Thoughts: this had the bones of something really good. I liked how kinda crude the MMCs were but still goodhearted and I liked the fmc's being a bit cowardly at first. She deserts the army then begs for her life. She's not letting pride getting in the way of her survival. Unfortunately, the setting felt like wallpaper and a lot of things felt half baked. 3⭐
Crappy summary: FMC attempts to recruit ex-highwayman MMC (who is half-deaf and lives in a French castle ruin with a wolf) to save her town from a vicious cult leader.
Thoughts: I went extra with a wolf instead of a dog. This is a weird book. I love Laura Kinsale's writing. It's gorgeous. I loved S.T. Maitland. He's such a weird guy. The Marquis de Sade makes an appearance. But a lot of the time I was like, what the hell is going on? 3⭐
Crappy summary: FMC's rich mom died while in a cult, cult leader (MMC) has taken all her money and FMC comes to the cult compound to investigate.
Thoughts: Anne Stuart loves antiheroes, sex during thunderstorms and weird gross villains. What a coincidence, so do I. The FMC is a messy mess in the most relatable and tortured of ways. The MMC is a bad, bad man who is also sort of messy. 4⭐
Crappy summary: When Harry (Pye) met the FMC (I forget her name).
Thoughts: Look, I love Elizabeth Hoyt. I really do. But I don't even remember much of this. All I remember is it was boring and the FMC was annoying. I can't even remember why. 2⭐
Crappy summary: recently blinded (viscount?) with anger issues get some tender love & care from Selina posing as his housekeeper.
Thoughts: in general, I've learned I'm not a huge Minerva Spencer fan, but sometimes a perfect storm happens and I get this kinda thing from her. I like how she doesn't half ass the age gaps. I think this one was 16 years? I could be wrong. 4.5⭐
Crappy summary: something about the MMC is a chemist but also the bastard son of an earl and the FMC is spunky and literal-minded with a special interest (aka almost every AQ heroine).
Thoughts: I think I've overconsumed AQ. That or I've read the best of her stuff and now I'm at the dregs. This was a chore to read. 2⭐ purely for the weird villain.
Crappy summary: FMC wants to research gambling club for her book, rescues MMC and he lets her do research at his club in return for saving him.
Thoughts: LK went hard with the villainess in this. She was pretty scary. Derek Craven was pretty intense himself. The epilogue itself was why I read the book. It did not disappoint. 4⭐
Crappy summary: B&tB retelling starring an earthy (earl?) who is a naturalist and the FMC who is commissioned to illustrate his books at his castle.
Thoughts: I love earthy, sex-crazed nerds/scientists, so this was mostly fun. I could've lived without the awful annoying 14-year-old who acted like she was 5. I get she was supposed to be troubled but there was absolutely nothing likeable about her. I didn't feel bad about her. She was an insufferable brat who took up way too much page-time. I would've edited her out of the story and put in more sex scenes, cuz the MMC was pretty hot. 3.5⭐
Crappy summary: Irish lord Killoran saves FMC from a hanging by taking the blame for her uncle's murder.
Thoughts: Killoran is such a fun character. He might be Anne Stuart's best MMC. He's a chaotic nutjob with blue and orange morals. (Sort of.) If you told me Killoran was some sort fae changeling I would believe you. Also, the villains on this were hilariously disgusting. 4⭐
Crappy summary: Theo/Dora and Clem get married so she can be a drag king and Clem can own the majority of her family's theater.
Thoughts: this was my break-open-in-case-of-emergency Alice Coldbreath, my last Alice Coldbreath until her new book comes out. 😭 But it fit the prompt, so... I love these two characters. They're so adorable. Clem's so a besotted rat and Dora is such a sweet angelbaby. 5⭐
Crappy summary: see title.
Thoughts: Reading this gave me a rash. 1⭐
Crappy summary: sweet angelbaby FMC with heterochromia gets leg-shackled to scarred military man MMC to get away from the scary duke who has his sights on her.
Thoughts: Mimi Matthews workin' her magic yet again. This was utterly adorable. In fact, I think I'm going to reread this soon. 5⭐
Crappy summary: FMC commissions tailor MMC for one of his stylish riding habits so she can get a rich husband.
Thoughts: I love artist/muse relationships. There's something really intense about them. This reminded me sort of Paradise Kiss, with the model/designer relationship. 4⭐
Crappy summary: redheaded debutante is really horny and crazy and rebellious and stuff.
Thoughts: I liked the other sister better. This one was not it for me. 2⭐
Crappy summary: Former sailor Alba is lead by his mother to a small fishing town where he must join forces with a merman to learn what happened to their respective people.
Thoughts: utter perfection. I loved the characters, I loved the plot, the writing was beautiful. The amount of research that went into this must have been a lot. I can't ask much more than that. 5⭐
Crappy summary: The FMC is the lone survivor of a mass shooting perpetrated by the MMC's father. MMC has rolled back into town.
Thoughts: this had a really interesting setup and I don't know if it tackled the issue especially sensitively, but on the whole it was an enjoyable read. 4ish⭐
Crappy summary: several bipolar MMC is blackmailed into tutoring FMC in art by her guardian.
Thoughts: this is really intense and it felt like one of the more faithful depictions of bipolar disorder I've seen in media. Thank you Ancient-Pace6222 for the rec. 4⭐
Crappy summary: a yeti and krampus fuck in the locker room and a journalist catches them, because she's hiding in a locker.
Thoughts: meh
Crappy summary: dude inserts himself into monster guy's household (a giant robotic beetle house thing).
Thoughts: I liked the world building and mythos stuff, that's why I stuck around. It was advertised as Howl's Moving Castle-esque, but really the only thing in common was the large mobile living situation. The characters were kinda flat and I didn't really care what happened to them. 3⭐
Crappy summary: Apollo, having escaped Bedlam with the help of his sister and brother-in-law, is working as a landscaper at a pleasure garden; Lily is an out of work actress writing plays to keep her and her son fed. They meet and fall in love.
Thoughts: this is the last Maiden Lane book I had left to read. It was a lot of fun. Daffodil the Italian greyhound is a chaos gremlin and Apollo is 🥵. The smut was also great. 4⭐
Crappy summary: Rockcliffe (MMC) marries FMC so she can be a chaperone to his sister, in turn she gets away from her shitty relatives.
Thoughts: it was enjoyable. I liked both characters overall, but one thing kept annoying me is Rockcliffe tells her multiple times if she needs help, to tell him so but she keeps going to his friends/relatives for help instead of him and makes things worse and make him feel like shit. 4⭐

2024.06.06 18:35 AWierzOne Weekly development round up - 6.6.24

Construction Watch: Elmwood/Bidwell - Buffalo Rising
Construction has reached the fifth and final floor at Douglas Developments’ Elmwood/Bidwell project. Fifty apartments are planned along with 7,275 sq.ft. of commercial space.
ECIDA approves plans for Evans agribusiness park (buffalonews.com)
The Buffalo and Erie County Industrial Land Development Corp., an affiliate of the Erie County Industrial Development Agency, approved a contract this week with LiRo Engineers to plan and direct the infrastructure development at the 240-acre former airport, which the agency purchased in partnership with the county. That will enable the county to begin marketing the land to potential users.
The ILDC wants to transform the former airport into a commercial center focused on attracting agricultural businesses to the more rural area in the southern portion of the county. The agency has been working with Wendel Companies since 2021 on a master plan for the larger project.
BuffSci charter school moving onto former Medaille campus (buffalonews.com)
“We’re giving [students] small buildings with not enough facilities, whereas students with families who have means go to suburbs or large schools with a ton of facilities,” Polat said. “That’s why it’s really important that this facility is going to provide an equitable service to students from downtown. Now downtown students are equal to the suburban students. That is exciting.”
Polat and Director of Development Janine Tramont also announced a capital campaign to raise $14 million, which Polat believes will allow BuffSci to own the six buildings on campus within two to three years.
HSBC's New Innovative Office Space @ Larkin Square - Buffalo Rising
HSBC delivered a message at the ribbon cutting, stating that it was clearly here (in Buffalo) to stay.
“HSBC is here to stay in Buffalo, and our innovative, new office represents our unwavering commitment to the city and Western New York,” said Roberts. “We are thrilled to be a part of the community and contributing to its dynamic economy. We’re making the return to office an engaging, collaborative and inspiring experience for our colleagues, while at the same time, supporting the community we serve. Together, we are not only building an office space for our employees and clients, but a foundation for future growth and prosperity in this remarkable city.”
Iskalo wins green light for Buffalo Bookstore Lofts project (buffalonews.com)
Iskalo Development Corp. is hoping to start demolition and construction on its Bookstore Lofts project downtown this summer, after winning approval Monday for the $6.4 million venture to convert the former Old Editions Book Shop into apartments and commercial space.
The Williamsville-based developer, which purchased the two-building complex at 68-76 E. Huron St. and the two former Farthing Press buildings at 260-262 Oak St. from Ronald Cozzi in 2019, wants to renovate the Huron buildings while demolishing the others to make way for a gated parking lot. The firm overcame opposition from a vocal Planning Board member, who also wasn’t in attendance this time to reiterate her resistance from last month.
Brownfield sites have become a lucrative commodity in Buffalo development - Buffalo Business First (bizjournals.com)
Contaminated land used to be a death sentence for development projects in Western New York. Now, it's a lucrative commodity.
"Twenty years ago we would find contamination and developers would throw up their hands and say, 'I can't believe you found contamination. This will kill the deal,' " said Michael Lesakowski, vice president and principal scientist at the environmental firm Roux. "Now they throw their hands up and say, 'I can't believe you didn't find contamination. I need it for the Brownfield Cleanup Program.'"
The state program, which offers lucrative tax incentives to developers that remediate contaminated land, has transformed development in Western New York since its introduction in 2003, resulting in more than 150 completed projects in this region over the last 20 years, according to state data.
(Note: I'm all for cleaning things up and using those spaces effectively, but I'm not so sure the developers should be dramatically profiting from the clean up efforts themselves.)
Plan for Kaleida, Brooks-TLC hospital in Fredonia is a go (buffalonews.com)
Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday announced an agreement with Brooks-TLC Hospital System and Kaleida Health to build a new hospital in the Village of Fredonia, a development that the governor said would be supported with $74 million from the state that was originally awarded about eight years ago but had not yet been dispersed.
Where homebuilding is hot — and where it's not — in Erie County - Buffalo Business First (bizjournals.com)
After starting recovery since 2020, the number of homebuilding permits issued in the Buffalo metro has dropped and recovering this year seems unlikely.
For Erie and Niagara counties overal, the number of homebuilding permits issued increased from 1,444 in 2020 to 1,591 in 2022. But that number dipped to 1,261 in 2023, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.
Business First further broke down homebuilding permits based on Erie County municipalities, an area where Joe Benedict, executive officer of the Buffalo Niagara Builders Association, doesn’t expect permit numbers to largely improve this year, based on talks with his members.
“The general consensus from them was that there’s an anti-growth mentality in a lot of the municipalities and towns around Erie County,” he said. “It’s slowing down the amount of those houses that can be built.”
(Note: For those without access, it appears Amherst is doing most of the building in the region.)
Funding clears way for Renaissance Commerce Park rail line (buffalonews.com)
Erie County now has all the funding it needs to relocate a rail line spur and rail yard at Renaissance Commerce Park in Lackawanna, enabling it to stay on track with its effort to transform the former Bethlehem Steel site into a campus for manufacturing and warehouse companies.
Newly minted U.S. Rep. Tim Kennedy, D-Buffalo, announced Thursday that he has secured another $1.8 million in state money for the county project to move the South Buffalo Railway Cos. tracks and rail cars from the front of the sprawling site along Route 5 to a location in back, freeing up another 48 acres of land for redevelopment.

2024.06.04 21:34 1013789743467898 Miscellaneous Basketball Nerd Posts Big Board, Reception is Varied

I warn all that I tried to stick to my guns and not abide by perfect consensus. Sorry for long write-ups. I had a ton of fun with the comparisons, feel free to rip me apart in the comments. I will only be going to 30 players.
1. Alex Sarr Did not expect to have him at number 1, but I think if I were a GM he'd be the most desirable piece in this draft class by a good amount. I will probably end up talking a lot about archetype, but Sarr's is obviously very desirable. A frequent comp is Evan Mobley, and I see similarities in their games. The intriguing part about Sarr to me is that he is really quick and has a good handle; I see him succeeding in 5-out offenses attacking closeouts. If he continues to develop he could even turn into a slasher from the wing. Defensively I see him as less of a rim protector than someone like Mobley and more of a helpside guy, with continued work on his foot speed I actually think his ideal spot on the court is as a 4.
Comp: Quicker, but worse basketball playing Chet Holmgren
2. Rob Dillingham I think as the league shifts towards a lot of tall initiators (Tatum, PG, Cunnigham, Barnes, etc.), the off-ball skills of a point guard are extremely valuable. I value spot up shooting in a point guard more than I ever have, and Dillingham has this in spades. He is also a good creator for his teammates, something that we got to see bits and pieces of at Kentucky. Most importantly, he is one of the only guys in this draft that if you put him in isolation in the NBA right now, he could go get you a bucket. Snappy crossover and a ton of shake. He has a great in between game, truly a 3 level scorer. Defensively he has a ways to go, a lot of that is in the weight room. I think he actually did an OK job of staying with ball handlers and keeping active hands on defense. Ultimately his offensive upside was too much to overlook in a class with almost no high end talent.
Comp: Tyrese Maxey, Immanuel Quickley (boring Kentucky guard comps, I know)
3. Matas Buzelis This was a close one for me, and I was tempted to put someone a little more off-the-wall here, but I am going to play it relatively safe and go with Buzelis. First off, and I could very easily be wrong, I think his shot is better than what we saw. I trust his mechanics, and I think he is smart enough to take the right shots when he needs to. Matas is one of those guys that I think will shine early in an auxiliary role alongside good NBA players (the Ignite was pretty rough). I like Buzelis' isolation skills and he is a good rebounder and surprisingly good shot blocker. These are skills that are easily overlooked but will keep him on an NBA floor early on. I like his isolation skills, I think he has a good handle. Placing him here means I am betting on the shot coming around for sure.
Comp: I can't escape wanting to compare him to a young Duke Luol Deng. Luol was more mature physically, but I think Buzelis will impact positive basketball like Deng did. Franz Wagner is the obvious comp.
4. Ja'Kobe Walter While Buzelis (and soon Williams) are upside swings that I do not think will pop in their rookie years, Walter is one of those guys who will. Baylor ran him in very advanced, tough movement shooting sets and he still shot the ball very well. He has a blossoming in between game and a knack for getting to the line via pump fakes/seeking contact. His ceiling is a little lower than some others in the draft because he is a little short (huge wingspan though), but Walter is one of the guys I really count on to be a good NBA player. He is a really active on ball defender that I think can be surprisingly versatile despite his size. I also trust him to create a little bit with the ball in his hands, something he was really never asked to do at Baylor due to having a very ball dominant PG in RayJ Dennis.
Comp: Ceiling of Bradley Beal offensively, lower range outcome is KCP. Improvement of handle is needed, but his game has some similarities to Eric Gordon
5. Jared McCain If you go by similar archetype but better numbers, most people prefer Reed Sheppard. I like Sheppard a lot as well, but have some issues with him that I will explain later. My McCain take is very similar to Walter, this is a guy who has an NBA ready offensive game. He is a top quality deep shooter who takes a variety of different looks, he also has the ability (like Walter) to hit 3s without his feet perfectly set. McCain has an intriguing midrange game where he likes to get two feet in the paint, pump fake, and go up from the freethrow line. This proved an effective counter for teams that ran him off the three point line. I also see him as a 1 in the NBA, he has the passing chops to do it, that area was just crowded at Duke and he had limited reps in this field. Very solid defender, smart player, and great rebounding guard.
Comp: Ceiling of Jalen Brunson (more outside shot, less inside craft), high outcome Fred Van Vleet, low outcome Heat Gabe Vincent
6. Zach Edey Yes, I like Edey more than Clingan. No, I do not think he will have the same role in the NBA that he did at Purdue. With that being said, I think he will be an extremely effective NBA player. The big question is: will he be played off the floor after getting killed by switches? I personally think he is serviceable enough on the perimeter to stay on the floor, and he uses his length extremely well without fouling. He has excellent conditioning. He has good touch and a very solid jumper (see FT%). He is also absolutely gigantic, possessing a 4 inch advantage over Clingan in his wingspan. I think he will be a great rim protector, even if the block numbers do not show it. The thing that I believe can occur that will turn him into a star is him becoming a playmaking hub. Picture Edey setting a monster screen for a guard that can score on the perimeter. If the defense hedges super hard they hit Edey at the FT line. Edey can hit this shot, or if a rotation comes he can use his massive size to spray the ball to the corners for 3PT attempts. I know this will be a contentious placement, but I just think Edey is a great basketball player and will continue to be one. Feel free to tell me I am wrong in the comments.
Comp: Yao Ming
7. Cody Williams This is one I can see totally whiffing on, but I am going to stick to my guns and keep Cody Williams high. One thing I have seen on this sub is people calling him a bad defender, which I personally disagree with. Williams was constantly guarding the other teams primary scoring threat, often guarding the other teams PG the entire game (see USC/Collier). He stays in front of the ball surprisingly well, flipping his hips and gliding with drivers. He has a really long wingspan that disrupts shots very well. I think he will turn out to be a wing stopper in the NBA. This, in conjunction with what I believe to be serviceable shooting (FT numbers from HS indicate this, but it is all projection at the end of the day) should get him on the NBA floor early. He has a quick crossover that he uses to get downhill, and finishes at the rim terrifically. He is young, but looked good in a scaled back role. I hate his tendency to turn the ball over and look lost, so I am betting on him getting better with time. I will reiterate, a lot of my thoughts on Williams and Buzelis are projections based on the eye test, rather than backed up by concrete stats.
Comp: Jaden McDaniels. Spot up 3 threat with ball stopping upside on defense. More of an inside game than McDaniels with less defensive prowess. I think he could also turn into a Tayshaun Prince
8. Stephon Castle Castle is an elite on-ball defender, probably the best in the class in this regard. He is a smart player and should see plenty of the floor early on. His ranking this high is a little dependant on the shot coming around, which I believe in. I do not think he will ever be a sniper, but I think he will be serviceable. I see him as a very similar player to Marcus Smart in a lot of aspects.
Comp: Marcus Smart
9. Zac Risacher Risacher is a genuinely bad on ball creator. He can't beat anyone off the dribble, and that really limits his upside. He plays his role well as a catch and shoot guy that defends well and plays smart, but I do not see any star upside. A guy who some see as 'similar' in Jabari Smith was creating for himself via isos at Auburn, and generally showed a large offensive repetoire. Risacher is limited. Good at what he does, but limited. I do not see him playing another position other than the 4 because of his lack of on-ball creation.
10. Carlton Carrington Would like to see him score more around the rim, but his pull-up game is so strong that I think he has a really high offensive ceiling. Has the size and shooting ability to play as the off-guard in an offense that revolves around one ball handler (as most of the NBA does). I love that he creates well from the midrange, snaking PnRs and using pumpfakes to get open looks. Also a smart passer, rebounder, and all around good player. Big boards aren't perfect because his ceiling is much higher than Risacher's to me, but I personally take into account immediate impact and lower level outcomes.
Comp: Offensive game modeled after Devin Booker, obviously the highest end outcome. Lower outcome I would say Alec Burks with point guard skills. Cam Thomas if you transferred some offensive juice to all the other facets of basketball.
11. Reed Sheppard Everything that I say about Reed will be redundant, he is obviously hyper efficient as a shooter and player. My concerns are that he struggled big time to create for himself, most of his looks are spot up. He does not have a diverse game off the dribble. He is best in the PnR when he is hitting the roll man, as he does not have the midrange or at the rim ability to score there. He will have a place in the league because he is smart and a tremendous shooter, but I do not envision him having a large role.
Comp: Patty Mills
12. Donovan Clingan I suspect to get some pushback for this, but I consider this the high for a Clingan ranking. I believe he was the beneficiary of a great college team that had amazing guards to create for him. He will have a place in the league because he is smart on offense and a good rim protector, but outside of lob threats his offensive game is really limited. Bad hands and surprisingly awkward finishing at the rim when guarded by bigs. I think he will be fine, but I really see no scenario where he is any better than a Steven Adams or Valanciunas. Those are my highest end outcomes for him. Side note- he will not be a good shooter. He can't even shoot free throws.
Comp: Jusuf Nurkic
13. Ron Holland Ron was someone I thought I was going to have really high on my board until going back to watch his games. He scores a lot in transition to boost his numbers, and is an active and OK defender. He is way more limited on offense than his numbers suggest, and I am curious to see how his game scales down to a smaller role. He is super athletic but not a great finisher at the rim, has a wacky shot that misses badly often, and despite his activity on defense he isn't particularly cerebral. I want to like Holland, but I just can't rank him too high
Comp: I started to see some Stanley Johnson in his game. Reminds me of Nassir Little. Maybe he peaks as a Pacers Ron Artest? Gerald Wallace. I think these are stretches.
14. Kyle Filipowski Smart, do-it-all big. Great passer for short roll situations, has a good foundation for his jumper but needs some work. He will make a team happy as a 5-out center. He made huge improvements as a defender and rebounder in his sophomore year at Duke, and the team relied on him big time (and McCain). He has a problem at the rim of jumping straight into guys and trying to muscle the ball in; this will not work in the NBA. The rest of his offense is great, and he has experience working as an offensive hub creating for others. I honestly see Filipowski as a pretty safe pick.
Comp: Lovechild of Isaiah Hartenstein and Naz Reid. Certainly some of you guys despise this comp but it is probably my favorite one here.
15. Devin Carter Tough player, impacts the game in a ton of different ways. I think he will shine even when scaled down, reminds me of a more athletic and larger version of...
Comp: Deuce McBride
16. Isaiah Collier So much Scoot Henderson in his game. Weird to get two prospects back to back that are so similar. I watched a lot of Scoot this year as a Blazer's fan, and I personally am a believer. Being a PG is really hard in today's game. Collier is worse at the one aspect of Scoot's game that was a big question mark: shooting. This will limit him in the league, but he is too talented and physically gifted to completely burn out. I am going to give him the comp that many people are turning to for Scoot now.
Comp: Eric Bledsoe
17. Dalton Knecht Great scorer, but this dude is gonna get cooked on defense. I think he is probably the worst defender in the draft. I am not sold on how he will scale down as a player, as the Tenn offense was so centered around him. I also think he will really struggle to score on NBA length.
Comp: Stealing this from The Ringer I think, but Max Strus. High end outcome of Desmond Bane
18. Kevin McCullar If you have read through all of this thank you, the reviews are getting much shorter. If you have questions just harass me in the comments. I hate myself for using this but McCullar is this year's Jacquez, just a guy who can do it all, and do it all well. McCullar contributes to good basketball and will continue to do so, he has very few flaws in his game.
Comp: Blazers Nic Batum, maybe some Trevor Ariza, a little bit of Harrison Barnes. Worse version of Mikal Bridges. I will stop.
19. Daron Holmes Very solid player, I like how he stepped up and ran the show for Dayton. He plays up to competition, and has a jumper that I believe in, hence the ranking above Kel'el Ware. He is a little smaller, but is really strong and uses his body well. I could see him outperform this ranking for sure. Like Filipowski, I think he is a relatively safe pick and makes a team very happy.
Comp: Maybe my brain is going here because of the last name, but I am going to say Richaun Holmes. That feels like a lower player for a comp, couldn't think of a better one. These are getting hard.
20. Baylor Scheierman Absolutely great shooter. Very good rebounder and passer for his position. Knows how to play in a scaled down role. Tough defender, but a little slower on his footspeed, makes up for that with active hands and a really strong base. He is really smart around the rim with pump fakes and pivots to make up for his lack of vertical threat. I see his game translating really well to the league.
Comp: Cam Johnson
21. Nikola Topic I think his draft profile is boosted because of how Mega runs their offense through one player, and Topic ended up gathering a lot of stats from that. For Zvezda, he is executing fairly well within the confines of the offense, and he is very quick downhill driving, but I just do not see him as a really successful NBA player. His shot is a line drive that just barely stays above the rim, and no defender in the NBA will respect it. Because of this, they will back off, limiting his PnR upside and downhill scoring.
Comp: Beno Udrih
22. Tidjane Salaun This is probably too low for Salaun, he has great tools and is a solid shooter. Sometimes he looks like he has never played basketball before. Not great at putting the ball on the floor and also not a great finisher at the rim if he is not dunking. Will be a multi-year project that could certainly pan out, this is probably the least solid placement on the entire board.
Comp: More athletic Robert Covington
23. Yves Missi Interesting player. Good at driving to the rim, great defender and headache for opposing big men. He and Salaun are wide variance players so I would not argue with anyone who had them higher or lower. I like Missi, and I think he has a lot of untapped upside. I am going to use a cliche comp for him and say...
Comp: Clint Capela
24. Tyler Kolek Great pick and roll creator for others. Good shooter. A little worringly left hand dominant and can struggle with scoring on interior prescenses. I trust him to be a solid player that can run a backup unit really well. I am also going to continue the trend of avoiding only comparing white players to white players and say Kolek is very similar too...
Comp: Tyus Jones
25. Tyler Smith Great shooter, was lost on defense. Good upside swing late in the draft that I could see getting lost in the sea of other NBA tweeners. If you can't tell I am running out of gas writing these. Tyler Smith, you are going to be comped to....
Comp: the guy that Bobby Portis punched in practice, can't remember his name
26. Jaylon Tyson Good all around player that has succeeded in small and large roles. Solid shooter who has an advanced handle and can score. I feel pretty strongly in this comparison in terms of NBA role, ability, and playstyle.
Comp: Caleb Martin
27. Tristan Da Silva I personally prefer McCullar, but Da Silva is solid too. He seemed to sometimes fade out of games and his impact wasn't seen as clearly, but should have a place in the league.
Comp: Kris Murray
28. Terrance Shannon Really reliant on speed and getting to the foul line at Illinois, but also had the ability to take over games with his outside shooting. Active hands that lead to a good amount of steals. Very interested to see how he scales down, as the Illinois offense was very tailored to him.
Comp: Kendrick Nunn
29. Ajay Mitchell These last two guys I could see far outperforming this ranking. Mitchell is really good at just about everything, just played against lower level competition. I think he has the upside of a recent guy in a similar situation...
Comp: Jalen Williams
30. Justin Edwards Upside swing on a guy that was in a less than ideal spot at Kentucky. Coach Cal had an embarrassment of riches and did not know what to do with it. I like his pullup game, with time and proper care he could flourish into a really talented scorer. Do not give up on Justin Edwards.
Comp: CJ Miles

2024.06.03 17:23 The_Cheap_Shot Recontextualizing Emo’s 3rd Wave from an Underground / DIY Perspective Part 4: Previewing the Future of the Genre

Much like the Emo genre itself, finishing this series off is cathartic and bittersweet. I’ve put months and months of my spare time and effort into this project and I’m very proud of how it turned out. If even one person discovered something new that they now love through these articles, my goal has been reached. Before we continue, I want to thank everyone for all the kind words that have been said about this series. I love this genre and I really want everyone to know that all the waves deserve to be loved, including the criminally misunderstood Third Wave.
I’ll be keeping this key from the last post: 💎 next to a name means it's a hidden gem. 🎩 next to a name means it's one of the top releases of the entire wave.
The first section that we’ll cover today is Emo Proto-Revival. Now, just what in the Hell is that? To be honest, I don’t actually know. It’s a term thrown around to describe pre-Emo Revival bands that have a similar sound, a great influence on the Revival itself, feature Revival band members in older projects or otherwise just sound like they could be Emo Revival albums yet predate them. There’s naturally going to be some crossover with the Carrying the Second Wave section, given their goals of emulating the OG Midwest Emo sound. However, Proto-Revival usually has something more “modern” to set it apart, whether in production or in genre integrations. Math Rock in particular was a popular ingredient in the concoction for many of these bands, leading to the popularity of Math Rock influence in Fourth Wave Emo.

Parsing Through Proto-Revival to Bridge the Gap

Colossal - Brave The Elements (2003)

Admittedly, I could have put Colossal’s LP in this section as well and perhaps should have. However, I wanted to highlight just how unique their 2004 album was, even among other Proto-Revival releases. Their debut EP, on the other hand, is a bit more in line with what you’d imagine a Proto-Revival release would sound like: gorgeous guitar twinkles, fluctuating volume dynamics, strong trumpet presence and overall less Jazzy than their later work. However you characterize this band’s sound, you owe it to yourself as a fan of Emo to give them a listen, even if I’d be lying by saying there was any “Proto-Revival” when the genre’s dirt was still fresh.

Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start - And Nothing is #1 (2003)

How can I possibly categorize this release? Though the band was technically formed at the tail-end of the Second Wave, they did release a few songs pre-2003. Perhaps this means I should have put them in Part 1 of this series, either as a Second Wave Band or one strongly influenced by that sound. Regardless, Up Up Down Down is commonly (as common as this obscure band can be) referred to as a Proto-Revival sound and a small but profound influence on upcoming Emo Revivalists. Primitive twinkles can be found in the guitar playing while all of the good ol’ Midwest Emo elements are here. Uncommon time signatures and switches can also be heard by the discerning ear.
In addition to the pre-Third Wave releases, this band also came out with several EPs during this time period. Perhaps the best one would be released four years later…

Tamiroff - Bittersweet and Strange (2004)

Surprised to see them here? Faithful followers of this series will note that Tamiroff came out with their Demo in 2004, a Midwest Screamo affair. However, this band’s extremely limited discography is a microcosm of the influence of that particular subgenre as they found themselves coming out with an early Proto-Revival EP! Admittedly, I don’t know which record actually released first, but I’m willing to believe it was their demo.
There's the odd 2000s Post-Hardcore section here and there between the crashes and waves of Math Rock-laden Midwest Emo. This release accentuates the positives of traditional Midwest Emo, previews the future of the genre with twinkly Math Rock influences and showcases the Post-Hardcore tendencies that would lead into Polar Bear Club.

Special Noise - Special Noise (2005)

A noisy and dissonant take on Proto-Revival Emo, Special Noise enters with a guitarist who has actually experimented with his guitar's lower three strings, utilizing cool Mathy riffs without relying on the genre’s ever-present twinkles. The basement aesthetics are strong with this release, but that says nothing of each song’s individual quality. The band would come out with another EP in 2008 before calling it quits.

Everybell and Whistle - Everybody Wrestle (2005)

Recorded at an ill Nate Kinsella's commune warehouse space in Chicago with a makeshift drum kit and a guitar passed through two different amps to act as a bass, this record exemplifies the DIY spirit of Midwest Emo, especially during the early Revival and Proto-Revival period. The production values reflect the DIY recording approach to a tee, but that says nothing of the excellent musical quality found within the record.
Feeding off 90s Midwest Emo as much as Kinsella projects like Joan of Arc, the jangly riffs, volume dynamics and Hardcore kid-clean vocals define this 20+ minute aural jaunt.

Decmebers Architects - ,Apiary Ennui and Curiosas. The Brew Shakes (2005)

Forget ambition, what Nate Kinsella and Co were attempting with this album is nothing short of visionary, even if the towering heights they aimed for weren’t quite reached. Although this album was released in 2005, the LP was the final recording of this late 90s Midwest Emo project from 2001. Naturally, the guitar tones are quite gritty, matching the aesthetic of late Second Wave Emo. However, the experimentation here goes beyond what most Emo bands would call “experimentation,” including instruments like the turntable!
The Math Rock twinkles are there as expected, juxtaposed by harsh guitars, weird noises and interesting song structures. Even though this may not technically be Proto-Revival, it will be appreciated by anyone into that sound.

Saleontomorrow - Demo (2005)

Only three tracks in length, this release further cements the 00s British Emo scene as one of the most underrated. Saleontomorrow’s demo is slightly rough around the edges, but the cool Mathy song structures, impressive lead guitar riffs and careless vocals make for a breezy listen. Make sure you check out their compilation of unfinished songs as well.

Cowboys Aren't Indians - Cowboys Aren't Indians (2005)

Diamonds in the rough from Utah, the horribly named Cowboys Aren't Indians played chill yet active music in the Math Rock vein with Midwest Emo as a guide. The music tends to move by at a brisk pace thanks to the masterful and quirky guitar playing, the muted explosiveness of the drummer and the frankness of the vocalist.
With lofi production values and an emphasis on vocal-less sections of music, there almost seems to be a Post-Rock influence tucked away in there somewhere. After some years of inactivity, the band would release another EP in 2010. It seems the band was just at the wrong place at the wrong time to gain much notoriety.

Polara - Tempestade bipolar (2005)

Tonally, the band is reminiscent of Colossal, which seems to make sense as they were active at the same time, but they were separated by over 5,000 miles (almost 8,500 km) on different hemispheres! This could not have been possible without drawing from the same well of influence in old school Emo.
Polara executes quite differently from Colossal, keeping the riffs simpler and injecting a dose of lighthearted Indie into the concoction. The occasional hint of 90s Post-Hardcore pops up to give the music some weight. These Brazilians definitely did Emo proud with this release.

oh my god elephant - oh my god elephant (2006)

Had oh my god elephant released this EP in 2010 with slightly better production values, you’d be bombarded with this release on every hidden gem of the Emo Revival list out there. Instead, we received this masterful yet subdued Midwest Emo EP in 2006 with almost zero attention given. Although Emo was about as popular as it ever would be in 2006, basement-style Midwest Emo like this was completely out of vogue.
The band impressively fuses the Indie-leaning Emo sound of the late 90s with soft, mathy guitar riffs that keep the otherwise relatively slow music fairly lively. Whiny vocals and somewhat absurdist lyrics may turn off some listeners, but Emo Revival fans will greatly enjoy this effort.

The One Up Downstairs - The One Up Downstairs (2006)

Ok, calling this Proto-Revival would be disingenuous, even though it seemingly fits the bill with a 2006 release date. However, this is a Mike Kinsella project that predates even American Football! Proto-Proto Revival? I don't know, but this is the best place to put this for now.
These three tracks were recorded in 1997 but didn't see the light of day until almost a decade later. Though reminiscent of AF, the songs are slightly more upbeat in comparison, especially Rememories. If you like jazzier Emo or just want to check this intriguing release for its novelty, it's worth at least one spin.

Street Smart Cyclist - Demo 2006! (2006) 💎

SSC's legacy upon Emo history will never be appreciated enough. With only eight songs to their name spread across less than two years of activity, band members would go on to create Snowing and Boy Problems, two extremely influential Revival bands in their own right.
On this first three-song EP, the band shows off their immense musical talents with Hardcore-leaning Midwest Emo mixed with scathing Math Rock sensibilities. Production values are intentionally harsh, adding to the noisiness and musical chaos. The guitar and rhythm instruments are played with equal parts passion and complexity.

Pirouette - Sometimes Sad Isn’t Funny (2006)

Unexpectedly catchy, free-flowing and noodly, Pirouette’s debut EP displays the Proto-Revival sound exactly like you’d expect it. The guitarist, of course, is one of the great highlights of this release, utilizing a proficient mix of fun chord progressions and jangly guitar riffs. Although the vocal performance isn’t the cleanest, the vocal melodies in these songs are excellent and will worm their way into your ears and your heart.
The band was only around between 2006-2008, just in time to miss their signature sound exploding in the scene. They would come out with two more EPs, both excellent in their own right, and an almost-acoustic LP.

Ryerose - Ryerose (2006)

A release filled to the brim with such passion that it could rival Penfold, Ryerose is the brainchild of Craig Woods and, who else, Peter Helmis. Unlike the youthful explosiveness found in much of Helmis’ other work, Woods really seems to ground him with this melancholic, layered guitar approach. Vocals are also handled primarily by Woods, who sings similarly to other bands like Benton Falls or Mineral.
You can hear every ounce of blood, sweat and tears that was put into this project, featuring brilliant twinkles and disparate volume dynamics. This release might just be the best of a surprisingly robust discography from Helmis in 2006.

Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start - Worst Band Name Ever (2007)

The band's final album reflects their playful attitude toward Emo while simultaneously taking Emo music seriously. Utilizing more acoustic guitars than their first LP, the Math Rock influence is a bit more subtle but nonetheless quite present. Keen ears will hear all of the sly musical techniques the band makes use of on this very short 20 minute album.
This band exemplifies the Proto-Revival to a tee: a band with all the talent in the world and forward-thinking (ironically by looking back), only to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. This exact album could have made them them Emo legends in 2010.

Marquette - Waxing / Waning (2007)

After releasing a so-so EP in 2006, true Midwest Emo band Marquette would release this EP a year later and it is as serene as it is rough around the edges. Utilizing decent but definitely DIY production techniques, Waxing / Waning is filled to the brim with some of the coolest guitar playing in this entire wave. Although the vocal performance is more than serviceable, the sheer focus on extended instrumental passages, led by near-virtuosic dual guitar lines, showcases the true star of the show.
The band would fold after this release, but from the ashes, a couple of the ex-bandmates would start the underrated Emo Revival band Penpal. Though similar in style, the Slowcore and American Football influence was far more pronounced.

Avast! - Faultlines (2007)

Avast! was a Scottish Emo band that only existed for a short time in the mid aughts. However, we can hear the infamous British Indie influence on this, no matter how hard they tried to hide it; unlike Dartz!, TTNG and the like, Avast!’s Faultlines harken back to more classic Midwest Emo, even if it’s with a slightly more modern approach. This is the band’s sole release, but I’d recommend it to anyone who is interested in the description.

Look Mexico - This Is Animal Music (2007)

I don't know what kind of Animals they have in Florida, but it sounds remarkably close to some Chicagoland Emos from the mid to late 90s. Look Mexico’s debut album has Kinsella fingerprints all over it, from the twinkly riffs to that very specific late 90s Indie Rock x Midwest Emo timbre. The vocals are of course of a whiny nature, though all is produced and mastered quite well.
Unlike many other Proto-Revival artists on this list, Look Mexico continued releasing music until 2016, the end of the Revival. Unfortunately, they pivoted to a more Indie-leaning sound while eschewing the Emo influence. Had their music remained American Football-inspired, this band could be legendary in the scene.

Meet Me in St. Louis - Variations on Swing (2007)

If I’m being honest, this isn’t actually Emo Proto-Revival. In reality, this is a calculated mix of Post-Hardcore, Math Rock and Midwest Emo with ample Kinsella influences. Look, Proto-Revival wasn’t really a scene, it was just a bunch of disconnected bands taking influence from the same people at the same time, hoping to make awesome music. It just so happened that this led to the Emo Revival, but I think Meet Me in St. Louis exhibits enough Emo sensibilities on this record to make it on this list - much like fellow UK Post-Hardcore band Million Dead.
Ambitious guitar riffs, song structures, tempo shifts and time signature changes are sprawled across the varied musical landscapes found on this LP. The Midwest Emo elements help weave together the more elaborate and lofty techniques and influences here. Even if it doesn’t fit in with this section exactly, it’s more than worth a listen.

Street Smart Cyclist - Lint Traps (2007)

SSC employs a similar songwriting style to their first EP, though these three tracks are all acoustic and feature significantly less percussion. Galm's singing is still as off-kilter as ever, though reduced in aggression. It's unclear if these songs were always intended to be acoustic or if they were previewing a more traditional song to be released later, such as We Lack Science. An offbeat experimental release for sure, it should be heard at least once.

oh my god elephant - Fancy Cookies (2008) 💎

Prior to this album’s release, the band temporarily changed their name to Rainow Tornado, and boy does this album feel like one. From production to songwriting to instrumental virtuosity, this album trumps their 2006 EP in just about every way (save for personal taste) while somehow being significantly more obscure, quite the feat considering how unpopular their s/t EP is. Lengthy instrumental passages litter this record, putting you into a near-meditative state. This peacefulness is juxtaposed with the silliest, most irrational lyrical moments in Emo.
This album could very well be the logical extreme to the American Football sound, given the unremarkable but confessional vocals, spirited Math Rock riffs and overall lackadaisical pace. The band does well to step out from merely being a Kinsella clone, though, and this album is their magnum opus.

Pennines - Demo Feb 08 (2008)

From the UK Emo scene that brought bands like TTNG and saleontomorrow, Pennines is a Mathy Midwest Emo band that isn’t afraid to get playful with their songs. This demo is only two songs but shows the tremendous promise that the band possessed with the Indie guitar riffs, mathy twinkles and signature British Indie singing voice. If you like the Math Pop-influenced Midwest Emo scene of mid-late 00s UK, check these guys out! They have some later-released demos and a split with TTNG.

Good Luck - Into Lake Griffy (2008)

Into Lake Griffy is the expert result of merging hyper-energetic Pop-Punk with Math-infused Indie-leaning Midwest Emo. The first thing you'll notice is the neverending guitar riffage and blistering chord progressions, followed up by some of the catchiest vocals this side of the Third Wave. The drummer and bassist both manage to stand out distinctly in their own right, essentially acting as the backbone for the Midwest Emo volume elements.
At 13 songs and almost 40 minutes of length, this album will breeze by and no two songs will sound too similar. The band would release one more album in 2011, though it was more restrained than this record.

Little Lungs - Hoist Me Up! (2008)

Cute, catchy and mixed with obvious Pop-Punk influence, this fun and breezy EP features infectious female vocals, driving yet straightforward melodies and riffs, and the odd Math Rock element hanging around here and there. What else is there to say? At 12 minutes, this one deserves at least one listen.

Gentlemen - Demo (2008)

Featuring a few members of The Summer We Went West, Gentlemen’s sole release is a demo from 2008. This is Midwest Emo in the classic vein with a few Proto-Revival trappings. With nine songs and a total runtime of less than 20 minutes, this demo is worth a listen. Gentlemen had the potential to be a really cool Emo Revival band, but they stopped just short of the goal line.

It’s an Icicle - L’Chaim (2008)

Emos out of Fresno, whose music scene was on fire during the late 2000s, It’s an Icicle emerged from the burgeoning Mathy Midwest Emo movement, citing Algernon Cadwallader, other Kinsella projects and Math Rock bands like Giraffes? Giraffes! as their primary inspiration. With dingey production, constant riffing and complete formlessness, the band’s debut LP is a sign of the changing times where DIY Emo artists were forming the core sounds of the Emo Revival.
Before becoming a three-piece, the band released a couple of EPs as a duo. Though not quite as good as this album, they’re both super solid Emo releases in their own right.

Street Smart Cyclist - Final Mixes (2008) 💎

The final two songs of the band’s discography are an evolution of the tracks from their demo; the boys supercharge their Midwest Emo / Math Rock hybrid, sounding like hardcore kids playing freestyle Jazz. The riffs are twinklier and more intricate, the song structures are looser. Had the band stuck around, who knows how good their output could have been.
Proto-Revival to the core, they, directly and indirectly, shaped the upcoming Revival while having a unique sound all their own. The best way to hear the band's stuff is to listen to their Discography, released in a neat package in 2014.

Bad Times Ending - Bad Times Ending (2008)

Extraordinarily obscure Proto-Revival, I can only find one record of their existence and it’s the YouTube video from 4010 where you can hear it. Not much to say at only 17 minutes, but you’ll immediately notice the twinkling of the guitar, the sincerity of the vocals and the pretty good grasp on volume dynamics.

Instruments (Make Music) - Instruments (Make Music) (2008)

A band name so unsearchable that I am only 70% sure it even came out in 2008, the burgeoning UK Midwest Emo scene produces more Mathy goodness with this EP. It's a little quirky and littered with instrumental-only sections, but it fits in well with other similar releases from this time and place. If you like cool Math Rock riffs, look no further.
We have now reached our final section of this part and this series. We opened up the very first part by discussing Second Wave Emo artists who were still releasing Second Wave-inspired Emo in the Third Wave. Naturally, I will bookend this entire project by talking about Fourth Wave Emo artists who got their start sometime before 2009. Many of Fourth Wave Emo’s earliest classic albums actually came out in 2008 in particular, a landmark year for the genre. After reviewing everything else in this whole series, these releases are sort of the denouement of Third Wave Emo, showing how the underground / basement / DIY scenes all over the world kept its spirit alive. We’ve finally arrived at the finish line:

The Flames of Fourth Wave Emo Begin With a Spark

Algernon Cadwallader - Demo (2006)

Following up on projects like Halfway to Holland and Ryerose, Peter Helmis and Joe Reinhart reunite for a more traditional take on Midwest Emo. Their first four-song demo was released in 2006, featuring what can only be described as Kinsella worship. It’s been said to death, but Algernon exhibits copious amounts of Cap’n Jazz influence in their music, from the reckless abandon of the vocals and lyrics to the jangly, twinkly riffs. Although the band’s best and most memorable work was yet to come, this EP left the door ajar for the Emo Revival to later bust down.

TTNG - Hippy Jam Fest (2006)

TTNG actually released their first piece of music in 2003, a demo that showcased their mathy preclivities, though harsher than their future releases. Even this, their first proper EP, is a bit more rugged than their more Math-Pop-laden work later on, although the evolution into the band they’d become was well underway. Generous use of volume dynamics, irregular time signature usage, cool riffs and saidboi vibes are all here. The band would go on to be one of the most important UK Emo / Math Rock bands of all time, and we’ll see why later on in this list.

Empire! Empire! (I Was a Loney Estate) - When the Sea Became a Giant (2007)

The first outing for Emo Revival Juggernauts Empire! Empire!, the band’s legacy for crafting biting, poignant Midwest Emo begins with the opening salvo on the first track of this record. The bittersweet magnificence that defines the band’s sound is created with a heartrending guitar tone, emotionally raw vocals, abreactive lyrics and awe-inspiring song builds. While building off the legends of the genre such as Mineral, Empire! injects their own energy into their music, and it’s readily apparent even with their first EP.
The band would become legends in the genre with a cavalcade of releases, many of which being splits with fellow legends and hidden gems of the genre. Does this EP touch What It Takes to Move Forward? I mean, can anything? That said, the building blocks were there from the start.

By Surprise - Four on Seven in Eight (2007)

Despite leaving their indelible mark on the Emo Revival with a 2009 LP split with Hightide Hotel, the band is still a nightmare to Google. As such, this Indie-laden Midwest Emo release has very little information. There seems to be conflicting reports on this release date, but I personally believe the 2007 date.
With raw production, reckless yet catchy vocals, refreshing chord progressions and at less than 10 minutes, this is an easy listen to future underrated Revivalists.

Weatherbox - American Art (2007) 💎

After releasing two proof-of-concept EPs, Weatherbox's debut LP was released in 2007. Whether you consider this band Proto-Revival, Emo Revival or something else, it doesn't really matter. Warren's tortured voice, his world-weary lyrics and the deceptive complexity of the music provide for one Hell of a release from these San Diego natives.
At 50 minutes, this album is actually quite an easy listen. The variety of songs on offer, as well as the general flow of the record, transports the listener into the world of American Art seamlessly. Weatherbox would continue releasing music until 2014, right at the height of the Revival. Fortunately, they just released a new single this year!

Annabel - Now That We’re Alive (2007)

Humble beginnings for under-the-radar Emo Revival outfit Annabel, their demo EP Now That We’re Alive showed all the promise that this band possessed, even in their early days. A nice little variety of sounds punctuate this ultimately laid back and inoffensive release. I’d recommend giving their discography a shot if you enjoy this demo.

A Great Big Pile of Leaves - The Fiery Works (2007)

Slidey, bendy, mathy and just plain fun, A Great Big Pile of Leaves’ debut EP showcases all of the band’s strengths in a neat sub-20-minute package. AGBPOL managed to craft a slice of Emo all their own with their defining guitar techniques, catchy vocal melodies and syncopated rhythms. While somewhat poppy at times, they seem to be capitalizing more on Math-Pop than Emo-Pop.
The band would go on to release another EP before the Third Wave was up - and are still around to this day!

Everyone Everywhere - Pants (2007)

The debut EP from Philly-natives in Everyone Everywhere, the band’s signature approach to writing music is on full display with an airy combination Emo, Indie Rock, Post-Rock and Math Rock. The band would go on to release two criminally-underrated Emo Revival albums in the early 2010s, expanding off of this already-impressive debut.

Brave Little Abacus - Demo? (2008)

Monumental doesn’t even begin to cover what Brave Little Abacus’ contribution to the Emo scene truly means. Solidly an Emo Revival band, Brave Little Abacus’ ultra-experimental guide to creating Emo music is still influencing artists today, being the basis for much of the Fifth Wave. Chiptunes, strange samples, weird noises, all of this is mixed in with unfiltered vocal hysteria. Literally, I cannot describe to you what this sounds like, you have to hear it for yourself.
This debut EP is somehow more unhinged and more straightforward than their future work, both at the same time. Don’t know what I mean? Give this legendary band a spin to see for yourself.

Transit - This Will Not Define Us (2008)

Stalwarts of the Soft Grunge movement during Emo’s Fourth Wave, Transit began their career with a strong Emo / Pop-Punk hybrid. Although some variation of those genres would be a part of their primary playstyle for the duration of their run, nothing would quite sound like this record. Quick lead melodies and straightforward rhythms drive the record forward.

TTNG - This Town Needs Guns (2008) 🎩

TTNG, then known as This Town Needs Guns, released a self-titled compilation album in early 2008 with songs from their full-length split with Cats and Cats and Cats and other unreleased tracks. With just eight songs and without a designed sense of flow, this somehow manages to be the best TTNG record ever. This album includes a wonderful variety, from acoustic tracks to Math Pop jaunts to heavier Emo sections.
If you are a fan of Math Rock’s association with Midwest Emo, this album might just be the pinnacle of that sound. The twinkly riffs are impossibly clean and the subtly mathy song structures add sophistication and technicality to the project. This stands as possibly the best and most important British Emo releases of all time.

A Great Big Pile of Leaves - The Fiery Works II (2008)

While not utilizing quite as many guitar tricks as the band's debut EP, there is an admirable variety of songs on this short record. In particular, they embrace their inner Math-Pop band a ton. It's personal preference whether you prefer part 1 or part 2, but they both tickle that same spot in your brain that says, “Neat!”
Despite these respectable Emo releases, the band's best work was yet to come. Their sound was an injection of carelessness and vitality to the Emo Revival.

Algernon Cadwallader - Some Kind of Cadwallader (2008) 🎩

Some will say that the Emo Revival officially began with the release of this album, and I have no basis on which to argue. However, for the purposes of this series, I’m including everything from the year 2008, so here it comes at the tail end of Third Wave Emo! What more can I say about this record that hasn’t been recounted tirelessly by other Emo fans? Many will point to popular songs like Casual Discussion in a Dome or the title track being clones of the Cap’n Jazz sound, but if you listen to the entire album, you actually get an exceptionally solid and wonderfully varied work of art.
Algernon’s whimsical take on Emo consists of playful vocals, neverending guitar jangles, daring song structures and the perfect album flow. Surprising elements of Post-Rock can be found on this record, especially with a near-14 minute closing track. The music speaks directly to the yearning one feels deep inside for life to be simpler again.

La Dispute - Here, Hear (2008)

Following up on a forgotten debut EP that was entirely entrenched in a raw Post-Hardcore sound, La Dispute would pivot directions by the time their debut LP was released. Before that, the first of their Here, Hear EPs dropped, stripping away the frantic aggression and going into near-acoustic mode.
The vocals are exclusively even-keeled poetic spoken word while the rest of the band seemed content to create subdued mood music to accompany the artistic stories.

Balance and Composure - I Just Want to Be Pure (2008)

Before becoming a Soft Grunge powerhouse during Emo’s Fourth Wave, Balance & Composure (with an ampersand) released a demo EP, fusing the predominant sounds of the Second Wave ala Braid or Mineral and the Third Wave ala Taking Back Sunday and Brand New. The results are quite a fresh mix that shows how influential all Emo music has been over the years, even the dreaded 2000s era. This EP predates the band’s use of Post-Hardcore and occasional hint of Shoegaze, so it is somewhat simpler and more straightforward.

Hightide Hotel - Porch Luck (2008)

Like several other prominent Emo Revival bands, Hightide Hotel put out a small proof of concept EP, including one song that would later be used for their debut LP. What the band lacked in tightness they made up for in pure desire to create Basement Emo and all that it entails. Although not the band’s best release, it’s a solid roadmap to their early, unpolished sound while providing a true classic in the s/t track.

Tigers Jaw - Tigers Jaw (2008) 🎩

Progenitors to the Soft-Grunge movement that includes bands like Joyce Manor, Basement and Modern Baseball, Tigers Jaw's s/t is a masterful exploration of the intersection between Emo, Pop-Punk and Indie Rock. Their first album actually released in 2006, but was more of a subdued Indie and Slacker Rock record. Nonetheless, the band rerecorded a few of the tracks on that album to fit more closely with their new sound.
The vocals are often double-tracked or have tons of harmony, giving the otherwise chill and unassuming vocal melodies some richness and depth. And trust me, these words will get stuck in your head. There’s just a sincerity to the music, lying somewhere within the rhythm-oriented chord progressions and simple lead guitar melodies. This remains the band’s finest accomplishment.

TTNG - Animals (2008)

Extracting everything they could from both Midwest Emo and Math Rock, Animals is an ambitious concept album that pushes these genre classifications to the limit. Each song represents a different animal, so each song has a different flow and timbre. They capture the playfulness of a rabbit, the majesty of an Elk and the quiet nature of a Zebra, among others.
If this album had any sense of flow, it would be one of the top releases in this project. Regardless, this is a milestone Math Rock record and an integral part of the early Emo Revival.

Arrows - Modern Art & Politics (2008)

Criminally underrated Emos from Australia, Arrows debut album is perhaps their best work, seamlessly blending Midwest Emo with hints of Post-Rock, though done with a more modern Emo framework in mind. This album sounds like a slightly restrained Empire! Empire! release, perhaps only stopping short in terms of grandiosity. However, at 55 minutes and with calculated switches in volume dynamics, Arrows does a more than admirable job in that department.
The band would continue releasing albums until 2012, whereupon they’d appropriately been signed to Count Your Lucky Stars. However, after a promising split with Empire!, the band would cease to exist.

La Dispute - Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair (2008) 🎩

La Dispute's status as an Emo band is hotly disputed, but it doesn’t really matter to me either way. This band utilizes dynamic volume changes, has passionate vocals with cathartic lyrics and is tied to the Hardcore scene. And even though this album is equally indebted to Post-Hardcore, this album came out at the right time to help push Emo back to the glory days.
Spoken words and shouting are the methods Dreyer uses to punch the listener with raw emotion, heavily reinforced by the technical and varied instrumental accompaniment. Forget Emo - this is a must-hear album for anyone into heavier music.

La Dispute - Here, Hear II (2008)

Releasing the very same day as their acclaimed debut LP, the second volume in this EP series ups the ante from the first. The stories on offer are strong and are told in dramatic prose fashion and the tracks are quite memorable, thanks to the more varied instrumental approach. From Jazz to Post-Rock, this band's influences seem infinite.
A year later, they’d release the final Here, Hear in the miniseries. Fifteen years after that, they finally released another Here, Hear EP. They’re all excellent. Please check them out.

Glocca Morra - Museum Mouth (2008)

Legendary Twinkledaddies Glocca Morra formed in 2008 and managed to come out with a demo EP of sorts before the year had ended! Fortunately for us, this means more awesome Emo music to cover! Now, what’s a Twinkledaddy? Simple, really! Bands like Algernon and TTNG definitely fit, along with Revival bands like Snowing and The World Is a Beautiful Place, the latter of which coined the term jokingly.
With contemporaries like that, how could this not be awesome? Well it is, even if it’s only three proper songs and an acoustic song. Nonetheless, the band’s seemingly endless potential is showcased as soon as the first track. Despite the twinkling, this EP is a bit rough around the edges, giving it a tad of Punk cred (along with the singer’s gnarly voice).

Shapes Like Dinosaurs - Jurassic Geometry (2008)

Somewhat obscure Emo Revivalists Shapes Like Dinosaurs gave the burgeoning Emo Revival movement an early Christmas present with their debut LP, effortlessly encapsulating that Midwest Emo / Math Rock fusion that was about to blow up in the underground music scene. Despite hyperactive guitar and basslines, the tempo is quite passive, aided by the low-volume drum recording and simple vocal delivery. If you like some of the Proto-Revival releases on this list, you’ll probably really enjoy this one.

CSTVT - I Know What a Lion Is (2008)

Before releasing their landmark 2009 LP Summer Fences, three of the four first tracks on the album were previewed in this promotional demo. Castavet, later known as CSTVT, utilized Post-Rock extensively, shaping soundscapes and pulling great emotion from the listener. Midwest Emo is the meat and Post-Rock is the potato, the two genres complement each other perfectly. Although these tracks are amazing, they are only a sample of what was to come.
And there you have it folks! That’s all I’m ever going to write about this damn series again!

SIKE! IT'S BONUS TIME!

Okay, I lied. I wanted to include a list of bonus Emo releases that I either missed or forgot to include for one reason or the other. However, I ran out of space! Please wait for a very special bonus edition later this week!

2024.06.03 14:01 eroomcaasi Type me please. MBTI and Enneagram. Tritype and Instincts too

• How old are you? What's your gender? Give us a general description of yourself.
24 year old male. English. Evangelical Christian. Working for my church doing work with with university students. Loves music (plays guitar, in a band). Loves to laugh and joke. Deep interesting chats are something else I like. Family and close friends are very important to me. I love getting into character and reciting sketches, doing impressions (stuff like Key and Peele or Ali G).
• Is there a medical diagnosis that may impact your mental stability somehow?
No.
• Describe your upbringing. Did it have any kind of religious or structured influence? How did you respond to it?
Raised evangelical Christian’s. Embarrassed by it as a young child. Embraced it publicly as a teen Heavily questioned it when I was 17. Then that led to a deeper more thought through faith. I’m a committed Christian now.
• What do you do as a job or as a career (if you have one)? Do you like it? Why or why not?
Do a lot of student work, preaching, pastoral work and admin for my church. I enjoy it since I’m invested in the work.
• If you had to spend an entire weekend by yourself, how would you feel? Would you feel lonely or refreshed?
I would dislike the prospect. It’s not good for me to have loads of time alone.
• What kinds of activities do you prefer? Do you like, and are you good at sports? Do you enjoy any other outdoor or indoor activities?
Never been great at sport. But I’m in pretty goood shape and pretty strong these days. I do body weight exercise a fair bit (pull ups, push ups).
• How curious are you? Do you have more ideas then you can execute? What are your curiosities about? What are your ideas about - is it environmental or conceptual, and can you please elaborate?
My main area of curiosity is a desire to know what’s going on in other people’s minds. I want to know how someone has perceived an event, and what the train of their thought processes is
I have lots of ideas, sometimes more than I execute. But I am usually decent at taking some small action to at least get the ball rolling on making an idea reality.
• Would you enjoy taking on a leadership position? Do you think you would be good at it? What would your leadership style be?
I am quite involved in leadership at my church. I enjoy it and have been told I am good at it. My strengths have been identified as the way I relate to people well/naturally, the way I’m organised and the way I set quite ambitious goals for our church.
A strength of mine is that I will plan an event and delegate well, recognising there’s probably people that are better than me at certain things. I make sure the right people are in place doing the right things.
I put new ideas forward to try certain we haven’t really done before for example.
Some say they value my wisdom.
• Are you coordinated? Why do you feel as if you are or are not? Do you enjoy working with your hands in some form? Describe your activity?
Growing up I never felt coordinated. I was not good at catching. It took me a long time to learn how to drive.
Now I’m perhaps a bit better at those things. I’m also a pretty good guitarist and bassist if that’s relevant.
• Are you artistic? If yes, describe your art? If you are not particular artistic but can appreciate art please likewise describe what forums of art you enjoy. Please explain your answer.
I write melodies on the guitar. I’ve never been great at coming up with lyrics.
Bob Dylan is my favourite artist. I also love the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
• What's your opinion about the past, present, and future? How do you deal with them?
I don’t think too much about the past. I try and crack on with the present. I have goals for the future.
• How do you act when others request your help to do something (anything)? If you would decide to help them, why would you do so?
Depends if it’s a task I enjoy or not, and how competent I feel at the task. If I can help and help is needed, I probably will.
The motive would largely be a ‘do unto others as you’d have them do to you’ attitude.
• Do you need logical consistency in your life?
Not quite sure what this question is getting at.
• How important is efficiency and productivity to you?
I like feeling that my actions have value, in that they’re contributing something that wouldn’t otherwise be contributed. If I can minimise work I like to.
• Do you control others, even if indirectly? How and why do you do that?
I’d say I influence people. Not one to directly control that much. In lighthearted ways I will. I have a family member who often sits with bad posture, and I will often go and physically put their posture right so they don’t harm themselves. lol.
• What are your hobbies? Why do you like them?
I love music, socialising, theology, psychology, watching films, eating great food. Socialising with people I’m close to is probably top of that list.
• What is your learning style? What kind of learning environments do you struggle with most? Why do you like/struggle with these learning styles? Do you prefer classes involving memorization, logic, creativity, or your physical senses?
I have to have my own time and space to learn.
I’m better at taking in ideas than I am learning methods and detailed approaches.
• How good are you at strategizing? Do you easily break up projects into manageable tasks? Or do you have a tendency to wing projects and improvise as you go?
I am fairly good at breaking things into chunks and taking little steps to move in the right direction.
Occasionally I’ll get stressed if I feel like there’s loads of little tasks that need doing. And I have to remind myself to focus on one thing at a time.
• What are your aspirations in life, professionally and personally?
I want to be a Church Pastor. I want a wife and children.
• What are your fears? What makes you uncomfortable? What do you hate? Why?
I’m not too comfortable with unfamiliar environments.
I hate repeated failure in my life.
• What do the "highs" in your life look like?
Highs look like bringing people together and building relationship. Seeing a close family member turn their life around from a destructive path was also a highlight.
Success with the church I help lead is also a highlight. Seeing people become Christians so they know joy from Jesus.
• What do the "lows" in your life look like?
Repeated failure. Not making the most of opportunities
• How attached are you to reality? Do you daydream often, or do you pay attention to what's around you? If you do daydream, are you aware of your surroundings while you do so?
I don’t ‘daydream’ in the classic sense but I’ll often get caught up in thoughts, but the thoughts are often fairly practically oriented.
• Imagine you are alone in a blank, empty room. There is nothing for you to do and no one to talk to. What do you think about?
Might think about theology. Psychology. Or I’d plan something in my mind.
• How long do you take to make an important decision? And do you change your mind once you've made it?
I like to get decisions made pretty quickly. I’m not too likely to change my mind once it’s made up.
• How long do you take to process your emotions? How important are emotions in your life?
I don’t know. I don’t have a great relationships with emotion. I’ll probably drive with the radio loud playing Nirvana if I’m not doing great emotionally.
• Do you ever catch yourself agreeing with others just to appease them and keep the conversation going? How often? Why?
I wouldn’t agree with something I don’t agree with. I might just not respond. I wouldn’t do it just to keep the conversation going. I might just change the conversation topic at times.
• Do you break rules often? Do you think authority should be challenged, or that they know better? If you do break rules, why?
I’m not a typical rule breaker. Authority should be held accountable to certain standards. I don’t think authority figures beyond God necessarily know better. But authority is a reality in life.

2024.06.03 09:22 Cizalleas Has any recording studio ever had a delay-line consisting simply of a long pipe that the sound is put-into @ one end & received again @ the other?

The technique is probably not one that a band would use onstage - unless maybe a fairly compact one like in the video - but it would be pretty easy for a recording-studio to have even a pretty large one.
And the delay could be extended by having 'repeaters' - ie a microphone+amplifier+loudspeaker inserted-into the pipe @ each certain interval - likely somewhere in the region of 10m to 50m .
There's an obvious issue with whether it would even be 'favourable' @all over a tape delay. But just maybe it would: a tape delay has maintenance & reliability problems, with an endless loop tape - which @-best is a very fiddly mechanism - being used over-&-over-again; & even-though this kind of thing is precisely the kind of thing a Recording-Studio would specialise in, so that it would not be expected that replacing the tape would be any major task for them, it seems to me that on-balance that they just might devote to it the space required for a delay-line providing a delay of a substantial fraction of a second and reasonably good sound-quality, given that once it's installed, & reasonable measures taken in-the-firstplace to prevent it deteriorating, it would require prettymuch zero maintenance. And in-addition, the sound gotten from it might have certain æsthetic characteristics to it that the Recording Artist positively likes .
The delay-time could be a shade over doubled by filling the tube with sulphur hexafluoride gas; but on-balance, this would probably not be done, as the price of the gas is very high (although it's not rare : it's used for electrical gear - for enclosing equipment that's @all likely to have hefty electrical arcing going-in in it), and its use is being phased-out as much as can be, as it's an extremely potent - infact the verymost potent - 'greenhouse gas'; & also the contraption would no-longer be a zero-maintenance one … infact, we'ld definitely definitely be better using a tape delay than doing that !

A few references hopefully helping convey an idea of just how plausible such a contraption might be.

“The 3" rigid MDPE pipe transmits sound perfectly with the minimum 2.5" internal diameter essential for clear speech transmission. Even the softest whispers can be heard!”

Quora — If you have a 1km long pipe, can you talk with someone who is listening at the end of it? If yes, then for how much distance can the voice reach through the pipe?
“The passage of a sound wave involves small amplitude longitudinal movements of air molecules: towards each other in a compession, and away from each other in a rarefaction. If sound is travelling through a pipe there will inevitably be some friction between the air molecules and the walls of the pipe. This will cause a steady attenuation of the sound intensity at so many db per ft / metre / mile. How many db depends on the geometry of the pipe, the roughness of the surface, the stiffness of the pipe and the width of the pipe in wavelengths. There will also be reflection whenever there is a change in acoustic impedance, as happens at the ends. Eventually the sound level disappears into a mush of thermal noise, but you have to make an arbitrary decision when you consider it to have gone. The Gravity Discovery Centre at Gingin, Western Australia
Gravity Discovery Centre (Australia)
, has a polypipe sound tube 1 km long and 10 cm diameter. The ends are side-by-side, and it takes 3 seconds for sound to travel down the pipe, with considerable attenuation of higher frequencies, but a distinct puff of air when it arrives.
The most important effect at the ends is not friction but sudden change in impedance, which causes partial reflection of the sound waves.”
Fitting of horn terminations greatly reduces those reflection losses.

I'm not so sure it can so simply be said that reflection is more important. Afterall, reflection @ the end is independent of length, whereas obviously attenuation is completely dependent on it … and on material of pipe, thickness of it, & internal diameter.

2024.06.02 05:34 DiamondVoid149404 The Alphaverse Part 1

The Injustice Initiative and Megaverse Council did not grieve with their former leader for too long, due to the combined forces of Venessa and Velocity making swift progress in uniting dozens of Omniverses under their heroic banner. Velocity used her direct and demanding demeanor to influence the defenders of each Omniverse to join the Council and was brutally honest in her meetings with the current situation. She stressed that if they refuse to join then they will face extinction and the Council will not help them when they are attacked due to them only having priorities for attacking the demons head on. Venessa on the other hand focused her attention in strengthening the Injustice Initiative with rigorous training and firing incompetent people in leadership positions and swiftly replacing them with those that were far more competent and understood the severity of the situation. In the span of 16 days, the combined efforts of these two feminine leaders made great leaps in progress that equaled or surpassed Diamond's own work in the past three months.
While these two were on a mission together, The Researcher contacted them regarding a very important matter. When the two heroines arrived at the Council's headquarters The Researcher revealed to them two enormous discoveries. "We finally found them. The place where our foes call home, Omniverse 6,666,666. We do not know much of this Omniverse other than the Diamond from Omniverse 8 being aware of its potential and became paranoid of its existence leading him nearly wiping all traces of it from the Council's database. I happen to uncover the last fragments of his report that failed to be deleted. Furthermore, the Core of that Omniverse is deeply fractured, completely drained of all power. We can deduce with sound reasoning that the landscape of that Omniverse is something out of an apocalypse with everything that could have gone wrong, definitely went wrong. In addition, it is a very wide and vast Omniverse similar to the Main Omniverse. In fact, before its current miserable state, it was a near copy of the Main Omniverse. We are trying to scout and analyze the area as best as we can, but it is blocking all of our scanners. Our supernatural sensors can barely last four seconds before frying when they sense the amount of dark negative energy that shrouds that Omniverse." Velocity, "And the other news?" "We also found a very promising Omniverse that was elusive to our map, but just appeared and is surging with radiant energy from the Light." Venessa abruptly, "Light? Like The Light......... not just colorful lights?" "Correct. Would you care to guess what this Omniverse's number is?" "I would assume it would be the polar opposite of the other, so Omniverse 7,777,777?" "Bingo. Apparently, they have a hierarchy over there and their King requests your presence. His words not mine were King Alexander humbly requests the presence of Empress Venessa of the Main Omniverse and any companions she wishes to bring for a formal meeting in regards to the future protection of the Megaverse."
"Alright, message King Alexander and tell him I will adhere to his request. She accessed her communication com and ordered Tray and Cross to join her on the mission. She then turned to Velocity. I would have you join me on this mission, but I do not want to delay the progress you are making in convincing more Omniverses to join our cause." A short time passed as the three members arrived for their briefing with Venessa. After their meeting, they used their watches and traveled to Omniverse 7,777,777. Their eyes were blinded by the bright rays of the sun, before they could tell where they were at. At last, their eyes adjusted to their environment, which resulted in them being astonished at the shining city that was before them. They observed trains similar to bullet trains zipping back and forth through wind tubes and the residents there in very intricate clothing. The residents either had high collar jackets, dazzling shirts, and most importantly, Venessa could sense all of them having unusual levels of the Light inside of them. A loud voice could be heard behind them. "Are these the people who the King wishes to speak with?" The group turns around and sees two men standing a few feet behind them. One appears six foot and a few inches, he did not wear a shirt but was surrounded with gold and red armor, a long red cape, black pants, and long flowing blonde hair. The other was a little shorter around five feet and possibly 11 inches with black and purple hair, a black and purple cape, purple pants, and purple armor in the exact areas as the first man. The second one responded to his companion in a soft-spoken manner,"Yes, these are the three we were assigned to escort back to the castle." Venessa, "Hey, are you two like siblings or something? You two kind of look alike." The purple one, "That assumption is correct. I am Lucrest and this is my older obnoxious brother Leoped." Leoped, "We are two in a handful of select individuals, who serve the King by carrying out special assignments and investigations." Lucrest, "If you will please follow us, the King is eager to greet you."
The three heroes followed the two guards to the castle, during their walk Venessa teased her sibling, Tray. "It appears those two brothers have larger swords than you. I think they are far superior swordsmen if they can handle large blades like that. It fails to even compare your toothpick of a sword." "Shush! I don't want to hear it. I choose elegance and gracefulness over something flashy." The group finally reached the castle as several guards in colorful shining full body armor saluted the group as they stepped inside the large white crystal doors of the castle. Leoped and Lucrest led the trio right towards the throne room; no sooner than when the doors opened, King Alexander leaped from his throne and welcomed his guests. The King's outfit was composed of expensive black cloth with silver and blue crystals creating his unique armor with gold outlining around the edges and his crown. His hair was white as snow with a cape flowing from his waist with two metallic angelic wings attached to his back. He appeared as someone who was no older than their early 20's, much less muscular than Leoped, while possessing a staggering height of 6,7. "Greetings Empress Venessa, first adopted child of Diamond! A pleasure to finally meet you. Greetings to you Tray, second adopted child of Diamond! And a very warm welcome to Cross, the last member and headmaster of the Royal Guard!" Cross' attitude changed from being standoffish to one of utter shock. No one has addressed him as headmaster since the days of the Clone War. Tray whispered to Venessa, "Headmaster of the Royal Guard? I never knew that about Cross." "Yes, many years in Cross' realm he was headmaster of the Royal Guard, an elite group of warriors who protected his realm from malevolent threats under the orders of a man named the Keeper. This was brought to an end when.........Alastor manipulated him to massacre all of his fellow friends and the Keeper towards the end of the Clone War, mere days before order Kingdom Come was initiated."
King Alexander, "Empress Venessa please accept these gifts as a sign of good will. He signaled for four servants to step forward with bundles of technology and scrolls. The Alphaverse is more than ready to work closely alongside the Megaverse Council to defeat the fallen angels and corrupted souls of the Demonic Council! Please follow me to our war chambers." King Alexander led the heroes down several steps to a room that was protected by several guards. They were granted access and upon entering, the heroes were stunned to see holographic displays of plans and projects that were scattered as two male figures were debating with a female. The figures turned to the doors and quickly turned off the scattered plans and pulled up a file that said, "Propositions and explanation for the Megaverse Council." One unique hologram Venessa saw before it disappeared was a hologram of the Matrix of Eternity with a subject line under it labeled "Restore the Matrix to its former power?" As Venessa was deep in thought, King Alexander spoke to his guests who the other three figures were, "The lanky one with grey hair and a gas mask is our lead chemist, Lorenzo. The other one with him with the crimson operator hat, black and red hair, and basically black and red from his natural wings to his armor adored with many medals is our head of homeland security, Viciate. Last but not least is our lead scientist of technology, and weapons, whose brilliance I cannot put into words, Malissia." Malissia had medium length jet black hair that only left her left eye visible, yet it appeared she had unique facial marks that were long black lines leading up to her eyelids. She wore a long black coat that went just above her ankles with boots in the shape of heels. Nearly everything she wore was black except her shirt which was white with print that resembles computer chips. Malissia, "I prefer to go by M." Tray in a playful manner, "A little gothic in your appearance compared to everyone we've seen today!" "Simply a matter of taste and perception." Tray then noticed Malissia had white irises as the rest of her eyes were black, which created a sense of mystery behind them.
Lorenzo, "The disgraced Royal Guard is here......." King Alexander disappointingly, "Lorenzo......we talked about this." Venessa, "Hey what was that project regarding the Matrix of Eternity about? How would any of you be able to reload it?" King Alexander, "We have the source that originally fueled the Matrix. We were the ones who originally created it." Cross and Tray were shocked to hear such a revelation. Was the king bluffing or legitimately telling the truth? Malissia, "The reason you saw so many other projects scattered was due to these two knuckleheads trying to push these loose ideas my way, knowing full well we had a meeting today." Viciate, "Then Lorenzo and I should be going." Viciate and Lorenzo leave the room as King Alexander and Malissia start speaking with Venessa, Tray, and Cross. Lorenzo and Viciate journeyed far from the castle's boundaries and into the outskirts of the gorgeous city into a dark alleyway where a female was waiting for them. "Have you two finally reached a decision?" Lorenzo, "Yes, we have, Paradox." Paradox in a feminine form smiled while twirling their hair, with a snap of their fingers a contract appeared before Lorenzo and Viciate. "Both of you sign there. Viciate tried to sign with a pen, but Paradox stopped him. Nuh uh uh, in blood!" Viciate pulled a dagger and cut a piece of flesh off him and Lorenzo as they signed the contract that bonded them to Black Hat. See that wasn't so hard. Now I sense you have something to tell me?" Viciate, "The Empress, playboy, and ex-harbinger of darkness are here. They learned of the plans to restore the Matrix of Eternity." A sadistic smile appeared on Paradox's face, "Wonderful! Wonderful! Things could not be better! With your help we can kill those three now and you two will rule this Omniverse as the new kings only in service to Black Hat and the Council. Let them retrieve the remains of the Matrix, and we can either strike before or after they restore the Matrix, then steal it and place it within the treasury with the other dangerous objects that could pose a threat to our reign. Run along now and continue to play your parts like good little errand boys." Paradox gave them a wink. Lorenzo, "Freak! When it comes to your services, we work with you, not for you!" The two then leave as Paradox continues to smile in the shadows.
Back in the war chamber. Venessa, "Impressive. All that you are proposing will greatly benefit us. I can see your offers are sincere, but I must ask, why it took you this long to reveal yourselves?" King Alexander, "That is........simply because of an old law......that had been in effect for thousands of years. I wanted to honor my father and his father, but eventually my consciousness allowed me to overturn that old silly law." Loud footsteps could be running through the halls as a young teenage girl open the doors to the room with pieces of paper in her arms. She began to speak clearly out of breath, "I'm here sister. The documents you wanted." Mallisa, "A few minutes late like usual, Joan." "It's not my fault, military class went on longer than normal! Gosh, how many times do I have to tell you I hate it that mom and dad forced me to become a soldier!" "Everyone, this is my younger sister, Joan. Joan this is Empress Venessa and her two colleagues, Tray and Cross." Everyone exchanged friendly greetings except for Tray who stared at Joan. There was something about Joan that captivated him, it was either the childish way she speaks or the fact she had navy hair like he did. Instead of a handshake, he wrapped both his hands around hers and knelt down, "My fair lady, it is with great honor to meet you. I pray that you will accept my greeting as one of humbleness and may good health and prosperity follow you all the days of your life, my dearest madam." Everyone in the room stared dumbfounded at Tray's speech. Cross, "Where the crap did that come from Shakespeare?" Joan stood there blushing as she stuttered while addressing Tray, "Th....thank y...yo.....you." King Alexander, "Well this meeting is nearing its end, so why don't Tray and Joan spend some time with each other while the rest of us handle the closing logistics?" Mallisa, "WHAT THE?" "Alright it's settled then. Tray and Joan, you two are dismissed."
Joan and Tray stared at each other before she offered Tray some lunch, which he readily agreed to. Alexander turned back to Venessa, "Venessa, if you don't mind, I will like you and your party to stay here the next four days. The first two can be used to handle business regarding our technology and battle tactics as I introduce you to our greatest soldiers, warriors, and fighters. The last two days can be a sort of mini vacation." "Well..........I don't think such an offer will hurt. You have yourself a deal King Alexander!" At lunch Tray and Joan were deep in conversation. Tray, "You look much different than your sister. Your eyes are normal, you are much more cheerful, and just overall livelier." "My sister takes all the stress and responsibilities of the family upon her. That and her role in the kingdom just adds more stress to her. As for her eyes and facial markings, those came when she felt called to the Spring of Restoration." "What now?" "The Spring of Restoration grants those worthy unique properties or powers. Only a select few experience a change from the spring. It is not heavily protected because the spring prevents anyone unworthy from stepping foot in its waters." "Radical." "Mhm!" "So, I heard you fighting with your sister about you hating being trained as a soldier. Why is that?" "It freaking sucks! My parents do not want me to be an astronomer or engineer! They want me to become a Celestial Crusader. On top of that, I don't even get to choose what I want to do or what I want to eat a majority of the time! Eating lunch with you right now is a rare occurrence." "Have you brought your problems to the king?" "Yes, but I don't know if he is hearing my pleas or not. If he's not, I don't blame him, he has a lot on his mind and considering my parents are very influential in terms of politics, if the king makes a brash move, my parents will give him political turmoil." Tray abruptly received a message from Venessa stating their four day stay. He was excited and already made up his mind that he will spend these four days showing Joan the freedom she is missing out on.
The next two days, King Alexander did everything he said he would to Venessa and Cross. Among the strongest warriors and fighters were Ezekiel with his four angelic wings and star saber, Phonix with his ability to control time and fire, Ian with the ability to create things out of metal at will and his large sword in the shape of a key, Vivi with her ability of harnessing animal souls and acquiring their powers and abilities to her disposal, and with several other notable fighters. Yet, the group was slowly stalked by Lorenzo who reported all of their movements to Paradox. The next two days arrived where Venessa and Cross briefly parted ways in order to find some way to relax before returning to base. On the fourth day, Venessa contacted her adoptive mother, Selena, for a special request. She wanted Selena to travel to the Alphaverse with the Matrix of Eternity in order to restore it with wisdom capable of changing the tide of the war. As for Joan and Tray, the two traveled all across the kingdom from going to the beach, kayaking, visiting the aquarium, and art museum. Tray taught Joan how to properly duel and was deeply proud when she complimented him on his elegant sword. Unknown to them Viciate was also reporting their activities to Paradox. On one of their stops, Joan brought Tray to the Spring of Restoration just for them to sight see. Yet, she was startled when Tray stopped responding to her. His eyes were affixed at the spring as he slowly started to step towards it. Joan tried to stop him, but her petite body could not stop him.
Suddenly, he stopped on the edge of the spring and bent down scooping up the water as he started to drink it from his hands. Joan was confused at Tray's behavior, "Are you......alright?" Before Tray could turn around, he collapsed on the ground. "TRAY!" She ran to him, but when she arrived, his eyes opened wildly as his body started to glow with an unearthly light. Tray's body started to transform with his pupils becoming white similar to Mallisa but instead of the other part of his eye becoming black, it became a bright cyan color. His navy hair became white with a few streaks of cyan along with his olive skin changing to being white as quartz. His outfit even started to change around him with his clothes glowing with a clear like cyan substance with a hood gently resting on his hair. Gold embroidered his collar as a unique glowing cyan halo appearing over his head. "Joan.....please tell me I'm not dead." "I uhhhh you mmmmmmm I guess not? Here let me show you what you look like." Joan opened her camera and took a photo of him in order for Tray to see the photo. "Oh my gosh I became even more handsome." "Seriously, that's what you think about after looking like you just died on me!" "Hey, I'm sorry for zoning out on you like that. I just heard a soothing voice calling me from the Spring and I could not help but follow it." "The voice was more than soothing than mine?!" "Well yes...CRAP NO NOT LIKE THAT I SWEAR!" Joan started punching Tray as he let out a hearty laugh. From the shadows Viciate contacted Paradox on what happened and for Paradox to arrive swiftly to exterminate the couple.
The two continued on their walk after having their emotions die down. Yet, there was a sort of tension in the air between the two as one waited for the other to speak first. At last, Tray was the one to break the tension as he stopped Joan and decided to finally reveal to her the thoughts that had been plaguing his mind the past few days. "Joan, I don't know how to say this but, whenever I am around you, I just feel warm inside and what I could only describe as butterflies, erupt in my stomach." Joan blushed deeply before responding, "Oh Tray!" "Joan, if you do not want to enlist in the Celestial Crusaders, you don't have to. I'm offering you a choice. I see how much you care for your older sister and your eagerness for freedom. I encourage you to follow your heart and join me. I promise with every fiber in my being that my family and I will protect you and support you with whatever decision you make." Joan with tears in her eyes. "Oh Tray! Thank you! I want to briefly stay here so I can help my sister with any last assignments and join you on exploring the Megaverse and you taking me back to the Omniverse you call home! Thank you, thank you for being such a wonderful person to me these past four days. Truthfully, I can say I feel the same when I am around you. Your outgoing free-spirited nature is very cute and contagious." Tray extends his hand towards Joan, "Then what are we waiting for? Take my hand and I will show you all the wonderful places in my Omniverse! Obviously after you are done helping your sister of course." He gave her a big comforting smile as he waited for her to wipe the tears of gratitude off her face. However, just before she could place her hand in his, a gunshot went off as a singular bullet went through the right side of Joan's head and exited out of the left. Tray opened his eyes and was horrified at the pool of blood emerging from Joan's body as she lay lifeless on the ground. He was shaken as he heard a sickening laugh. He hastily turned his head to the direction of the laughter.
Tray's eyes widened in confusion as he saw Gadget Bandito emerge from the shadows. "What.....what are you doing here? How did you get here? Why have you done this after being a loyal member of the Initiative for many years?!" "Doesn't matter. Any last words kid?" Tray thought inwardly, "Wait......no......there is no way he is the real Gadget Bandito. The real one does not even know a lot of the Megaverse, much less keep up with any news from the Initiative." He finally spoke out loud. "My powers and senses are telling me you are Gadget Bandito. But my heart, mind, and soul tell me otherwise! WHO ARE YOU?" Paradox finally revealed himself to Tray as he morphed into his mechanical appearance. Tray finally spoke after being at a loss for words, "I know you. I know who you are. No, you are not even a person anymore. You have turned yourself into something unrecognizable. I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE! YOU ARE THE CREATURE WHO MURDERED MY FATHER'S PARENTS ON THE NIGHT OF HOLY THURSDAY!" Paradox had a twisted malicious grin on his mechanical face as he spoke, "Aren't you a smart one." Tray began to channel his new powers granted to him from the Spring of Restoration. "I WILL NOT ONLY AVENGE THE DEATH OF DIAMOND'S PARENTS! BUT FOR JOAN WHO YOU SHOT IN COLD BLOOD! DIE YOU BODY MORPHING BASTARD!"
Filled with pure rage, Tray could not control his powers as Paradox merely toyed with him before using Tray's disorientation to his advantage. Paradox was able to overpower the young hero, but briefly underestimated his new power buff when Tray's halo pierced itself into Paradox's chest. This comeback was shortly lived due to the intervention of Viciate who incapacitated Tray and tied him up. Elsewhere, Venessa felt a disturbance in her gut and thus gathered Cross and met with King Alexander to ask where Tray and Joan were at. The King did not know of their location much to the dismay of Venessa, but suddenly in the throne room a thick green mist entered the room which knocked the guards and the heroes unconscious. Lorenzo did his best to pick up the bodies of the heroes and tie them up, "Now we just wait for the Queen of Asteria to arrive and snatch the Matrix from her by ransoming these hostages."
Meanwhile Selena took care of Diamond and would not allow him out of her sight. If he had to leave her house, she would go with him wherever he went, due to the public opinion on him fiercely divided. There were some who believed the attacks were caused by him while others knew that he would never do such a thing and it had to be an imposter. She would fiercely criticize any bystander who booed or tried to assault Diamond. Diamond on the other hand did not like how Selena was being overprotective of him, and her reasoning was that his mental state was not in a good place. Truthfully, it felt like he was on house arrest. One day the two of them took a nap on Selena's couch, when Selena was notified to embark on the mission to Omniverse 7,777,777. She did not have Diamond know what mission it was, but said it was important. "Don't do anything stupid or silly while I'm gone. And do not go on any adventures either! If I find out you left the town, you won't hear the end of it!" "Alright sheesh I got it."
Selena traveled to Sanctuary and entered one of the passwords a few of the elite members possessed in order to gain access to the broken remains of the Matrix of Eternity. She grabbed the pieces and created a portal to the Alphaverse. Once Selena teleported off to her mission, Diamond took advantage of this opportunity and decided to venture into town. He grabbed his Bluetooth earbuds and walked outside to his favorite coffee shop. While walking, he played Have You Ever Seen The Rain, by Creedence Clearwater Revival, one of his father's favorite bands. He could not resist but sing along with the lyrics, "When it's over so they say it'll rain a sunny day, I know, shining down like water. I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain? I wanna know, have you ever seen the rain? Coming down on a sunny day." During his stroll a handful of protestors spotted him and began to yell, "Murderer! Thief! Crook! Liar!" One such protestor threw a pot of hot water at him, which nearly resulted in Diamond retaliated, but he bore these wrongs patiently and continued on his way. He turned a corner into an alleyway and started to dance and jump in the puddles. On the other side were a set of stairs where he slowly danced his way down each step to the closing parts of the song still singing with raw emotion. "Yeaaaaahhhhhhhh I wanna know have you seen the rain? I wanna know have you ever seen the rain? Coming down on a sunny day."
He turned off his music when he entered the doors of the small shop and waited patiently in line. After he finished placing his order and pulled out his wallet to pay, the cashier whispered to him, "It's on the house. You are still a hero to us who work here." "Are you sure ma'am?" "Yes. It'll be out shortly." He took a seat near a window and started reading the local newspaper in silence. Just then a little boy who was with his parents came to his side and started to speak with him. "Excuse me sir, but are you, Diamond?" Diamond chuckled to himself, "Well there is no use in hiding my identity. Yes, I am." "Can you tell me what it was like during the year I was born?" "Uh, odd request but yeah I can tell you, first I have to ask how old are you?" "I just turned four!" "Well happy birthday! Let's see four years ago was 2016.....wait no it was 2020. Gosh was 2020 four years ago? Man, all these adventures all start flowing together kid. So, around this time an old enemy of mine named......" Diamond abruptly stopped speaking as he felt a disturbance. "Named who, sir?" Diamond stood up and slowly walked to the doors as a giant explosion went off in the center of town. Everyone started screaming, running in all directions from the blast, as Diamond signaled his AI using his nanotech vision glasses. "HONEY what are we looking at? HONEY? Crap I never turned you back on." Diamond hastily had his nanotech grow on his left arm as he turned on the setting to activate HONEY. "I'm back! Are you ok boss, did you do anything brash when I was gone?" "We can catch up later HONEY, right now I need you to prevent traffic from entering this street and alert the local authorities." "Yes sir!"
While all of this was happening on Earth, Selena's portal finally brought her to the Alphaverse. She begins to mutter to herself, "Alright Venessa I'm here. Hopefully we can get this done quickly, because I don't trust Diamond being by himself." Selena was cautious of her surroundings, due to being greeted with an eerie vacant throne room. She suddenly heard a quiet "help me," this prompted her to locate the source of the voice which resulted in her finding Lorenzo lying next to a pillar. "Please help me." "Who did this to you, where are they now, and have you seen a young girl with pink and blue hair go by?" Selena used her powers to silently read the injured person's mind, but before her powers could alert her of it being a trap, she heard another voice which caused her pupils to shrink with fear. "Hello my precious doll." Selena turned to face the new voice and to her horror, she saw Paradox standing behind her, appearing the same way he looked the day before he died. The trauma from the mistreatment and terror she received from him overridden her senses and caused her to stand completely motionless. Behind her Lorenzo leaped and took off his mask expelling a strong toxin into her lungs causing her to faint and drop the pieces of the Matrix. Lorenzo, "Why did you change the plan to capture her instead of bargaining with her?" Paradox, "Because I want the last thing, they see is me holding the reloaded Matrix and handing it over to my masters." Paradox then switched back to his mechanical body and wrapped Selena in thick pairs of chains. He then took her body along with the rest of the heroes to the depths of the castle.
Simultaneously on Earth, Diamond slowly made his way to the source of the blast as he yelled at the pedestrians to head southbound. When he reached the center of the blast three figures emerged. A hulking lizard creature, a humanoid squid, and a tall figure wrapped in black cloth with piercing red goggles. "HEY! THIS TOWN IS CLOSED TO THUGS LIKE YOU TODAY!" The man in black cloth responded back, "We were wishing for a fight with Selena, but facing you is even better!" "I suggest you stand down before I rip a tentacle from your friend Squidward!" "Grok shut his mouth." The hulking creature lifted his axe from his back and started charging at Diamond. Diamond tapped his chest as his nanotech started to form around him as he created several large blasters from his back and fired at Grok. The blasts sent Grok flying backwards to his two other companions, but the man in black simply waved his hand to the right which sent Grok crashing into a local store. Diamond flew towards the humanoid squid and started punching him with unrelenting force that caused the squid to vomit quantities of ink. The man in black teleported behind Diamond and used his mystic powers to gain the upper hand by distorting the reality around them. The squid shaped his head into a spear and tried to pierce Diamond with his poison, but Diamond dodged it and sent him hurdling towards the man in black, breaking the reality illusion. He then had his suit create a sticky net which he shot to capture both the man in black and squid. Grok finally managed to get back up, but upon seeing his comrades captured, he clicked a button on his belt that resulted in him exploding creating a blast deadlier than the first. Diamond noticed there were a few people that were in the blast radius of this second explosion and flew towards them using his strength to hold the falling debris from the tall business building. The debris piled the streets with dust and papers, until the sound of sirens broke the silence. Law enforcement arrested the two other villains while Diamond was barely holding large portions of fallen walls, glass, and stone from crushing him and the civilians under him. The leading officer noticed Diamond struggling in the debris, but decided not to help him, he thought to himself, "Let's see if he can truly save others and be the hero the weak minded believe him to be." The crushing weight began to take a toll on Diamond as he slowly began to lose his footing until he was on his knees holding the debris up.
"I promise.....I will get all of you out alive!" Negative thoughts began to enter his mind as various voices began to call out. "You are not good enough. You couldn't save your own parents; how can you save these unfortunate souls? You are playing a fool's game. See how the law enforcement refuses to acknowledge your existence. Face it your story is over. Finished. You are nothing but a weak boy who thought he could have been a great hero." Diamond tried to block out these voices, but they began to take a toll on him, nearly causing him to give up, but then a quiet voice entered his mind. A voice smooth like honey but strong as thunder echoed in his mind. "You are something more. Look inside yourself, you are something far more than when you started all those years ago as a small-town hero. Do not listen to their empty words, listen to me. Do you renounce sin?" "I do." "Do you renounce the Devil, the sin whisperer, and all his empty promises?" "I do!" "Do you believe in the Faith of your fathers, the Resurrection, and life everlasting?" "I do!" "Arise my child." At that very moment Diamond felt the power of the Light course through him at greater quantities than before as his body began to glow with gold and white light. With a newfound access to the Light, Diamond felt it was only natural to change the wording when harnessing its power, "Through the power of Heaven's Light.......All things are possible!" Diamond effortlessly lifted the debris away from him as the civilians under his care ran to the rest of the crowd. The onlookers stared at Diamond's glowing gold and white body. They were baffled in amazement as a few murmured amongst themselves, "Truly this is the act of a selfless hero."
Diamond did not hear the crowd's cheers, whistles, and praises as he stood deep in contemplation. Deep within his soul, he was able to sense his family was in grave danger. With his connection to the Light restored, he made it his new mission to travel to the Omniverse where he sensed the disturbance. He quietly spoke to himself, "Oh yeah I'm ready to whip the person who is so bent on ruining my life! But first, I have to do it in style. He allowed his suit to create two large speakers; HONEY make sure the volume is on max. Time for us to go back into the Megaverse!"

Has anyone looked at the div class differences on dmaorg site? Reordering the 25 Clancy posts - the last post could be Nico- 024 02MOON 25
I noticed something on the dmaorg site- that the posts each have different formatting according to 5 "div class" sections. The formatting really isn't that different in each class and it doesn't seem to be connected to the various file types that are posts. (this was examined using a lot of help from the dmaorg fan wiki which already had the letters typed and I copied and pasted them.)
We know it's a cycle, it has happened again and again. What if the moon dates don't order as our actual dates do?
There were 5 timeframes for the posts- the ones that were already there when the site was found or shortly after, the ones that were posted just before/during the trench era, the ones that were posted after the files were terminated and the site was restored (during scaled and icy) and the ones that were posted ahead of Clancy.
If we reorder the 25 Clancy posts by their div classes (putting class 1 first, then 2, etc.), it puts the yellow stripe picture right before the letter it decodes. We also get the 024 02MOON 25 last. And I just realized that this letter is not signed. What if it's a bishop describing recruiting banditos? What if a bishop is realizing he's not so different from them? That he once believed he was a citizen, an escapee, an exception? Is he following the torches to find the banditos?

I’ve made it out.
I feel weightless. I know that place had always held me down, but for the first time, I can feel the levity that I had hoped for. It’s been three nights now, and my breathing has changed. It’s slower, and more full. It’s like the air out here is worth taking in.
I can see it back in the distance, and I’d be lying if I said that it wasn’t constantly on my mind. I wish I could turn that fear off, but maybe the further I go, the less that fear will affect me. I feel betrayed by what I assumed was home - if I ever end up back there, I won’t be able to look at it the same way.
They are asleep. They’re so sure that they know the truth, and carry on throughout their day with the same meaningless tasks. They’ve forgotten to look up, and to look outward, to understand that this isn’t about ‘in there.'
This is about ‘out here.’
This new world surrounds me. I used to think the walls back home were massive – these green cliffs engulf me, and place me right in the middle – Trench is quite precarious at times, and it’s easy to grow weary. But it’s real, and it’s true, and I’d much rather endure reality than to mindlessly be obedient to a life that someone else created for me. I’ve obsessed about this world for so long, that it feels more like home than anything I’ve experienced. Somehow, in this vast openness, I feel more protected than ever.
The landscape feels endless, and I’ve found myself walking for hours without any true evidence of getting further down. But I’ve seen plants and colors out here that I’m not sure I’ve witnessed before. There’s a beauty in the strangest places, and the curiosity of what’s next continues to motivate me.
I wonder who else is out here. If what I assumed inside is true, there’s got to be more like me. Sometimes I’ll feel a presence, or think I see something in my periphery, only to look up and see nothing. It’s just another thing that I’m afraid of that also excites me. It all just confirms all of the things that I hoped to be true for all of this time.
I am out here and I am very alive. I’m sometimes scared, but always discovering something new, and I will not stop. Cover me!

I can’t face this page for long enough to write what I’m truly feeling. I am only wrought with more questions about what I assumed to be true, questions about what my own path is, and the question that has plagued me every night that I lie here, back in city: Did I give up?
The force I saw between him and his bishop seemed tense to me, and frightening. But the memory of that exchange has had time to fester and replay in my mind long enough that I’m questioning if I even remembered it correctly. I assumed the bishop was forcefully retrieving his subject, but now I wonder if the bishop was actually trying to save him, and he refused.
I stayed out there for five days after I watched it happen. I haven’t seen him since. Maybe he got away, and was still out in Trench with me. Maybe the bishop chased him down, and brought him home.
Home?
Did I just call this place home?
After all of the endless beauty that I saw out there, am I now convincing myself that I’m actually better off within these confines?
I admit, it was more difficult than I expected. Nothing could have prepared me for how much the ‘unknown’ can consume me. Vast landscapes and endless possibilities, yet coupled with endless danger. I became anxious. I became tired. I became hungry. Every step I took became harder than the last, jumping from jagged rocky step to step, or pulling myself through thick forest - it all became debilitating, and I was sure that I couldn’t go on.
Keons approached as the sun rose one morning. I wasn’t scared. I was relieved. After all that he had taught me, his presence was the most comforting moment that I had in days, and I couldn’t help but be happy to see him. In true Keons fashion, he wrapped his arms around me, then put his hands under my face, looked me in the eyes, and said, “Clancy, child, let’s go home.”
I’ve been here for a few weeks now, and while the routines of this world are comforting, and certainly easier than life out there, my mind keeps bouncing between the two places.
Which one is home? Are the bishops protecting us, and the torches upon the hilltops dangerous? Or is it the other way around? My dreams pull me from world to world, and I feel lost in between all of it.
There is still so much I do not understand.

I'm not as scared as I used to be. Their mystery begins to fade as a method to defeat them becomes more clear. I no longer feel powerless. I can outsmart them. This new power of psychokinesis worked, and I believe it can work again. I stand here, looking down at the line where the water meets the sand - a starting line. All the while, knowing there is a finish line across the Strait. Their compass lies, but mine remains true. I've left embers of inspiration, I only hope whatever spark was left has grown to a torch, and together we create an inferno

CLANCY_S JOURNAL
The perplexities of the Dema horizon didn't occur to me until my ninth year. It was then that I began to contemplate the existential, and decide what type of impression I wanted my life to make. Naturally, to fuel my hope, I looked out upon the distance of the land that had cultivated me, only this time with a new awareness of the obstruction that my youthful ignorance had allowed me to overlook. Was it there the whole time? How had I not seen something so obvious? I am reminded of the moment daily, as the idealization directly collides with a unique hope for my own future. As a child, I looked upon Dema with wonder, today, I am wrought with frustration, as I spend each day squinting for a glimpse of the top of the looming wall that has kept us here. It was upon my ninth year that I learned that Dema wasn’t my home. This village, after all of this time, was my trap.
Before I became realized, I had deep affection for Dema. There was a wonderful structure to the city that put my cares to rest. Streets and locations were dependable, and the responsibilities of the day seemed to be accomplished with minimal effort. Once a task was taught and understood, we delighted in our ability to complete our obligations timely, and felt secure in knowing tomorrow’s duties would be accomplished with the same efficiency. We all worked to represent our bishop with honor, and knew that each inhabitant of our region had a like-minded dedication to consistency.
Keons embodied the spirit of this dedication. Of Dema’s nine bishops, Keons was revered as unwavering and forthright, possessing the ability to achieve focus that was rare for most on our region. We all admired him, and felt honored to be inhabitants his region. While we had heard legend of the ruthlessness of other bishops, Keons possessed a stoic demeanor unlike anyone I had ever met, and we were all proud to serve.

They’re asleep. The night took forever to arrive, and now we’re almost
ready. We’ve studied the watchers and know that there’s no chance that
we can step through unnoticed. So, instead of trying to hide
ourselves, we’ll make sure that all of us are noticed. It’s been one
year since the last convocation, and tomorrow’s Annual Assemblage of
Glorified will be the biggest spectacle this concrete coffin of a city
has seen all year. If we time it right, we’ll divert the attention of
the watchers and finally take the step though. We’ve had no contact,
but we’re hoping the other side will be able to find a way in. We’re
not sure of the breach location, but we are willing to risk being
smeared in order to find it. We know that we must go lower, and wait
for the torches. They’ve never seen anything quite like this, and by
morning, everything will be different. I’m terrified and excited, all
at the same time. They don’t control us.

What is this thing? This device? This gift? Some sort of neurological connection or expansion. Psychokinetic weapon?
This is absurd.
Why was this given to me? Why am I the only one that can weild it? Was this the reason that I survived? My mind is racing as I wait here on the rocks - staring off into the darkness. Waiting for our torches to be mirrored - the signal he told me to wait for.
It feels oddly familiar. Not the spikes in my hand, but the power it harnesses, I've felt it before. Is this also the source of those rumors I heard in the dark corners of the city? Legends and stories that I assumed were myth, inspired by children's nightmares - tales of what the bishops would use the bodies for. Those "honorable" citizens who acheived The Glorious Gone - referred to as available vessels.
It all begins to make sense.
The episodes I would have: the blood red vision, my dreams of flying, the out of body account of the rider in the river, the decaying hosts of the television show, the robed figures that commanded the doomed ship...
Had we all been "seized" by the bishops using this same technique? Is this where their power comes from? Are they immortal, or just feeding off the next body, giving their hosts a brief second-life? I am in my original life, why am I available to this control?
This whole time I thought I was battling my inner self. Was I actually under assault for something else? someONE else?
This small eerie island has made me a weapon. We both believe that we can use it to change the momentum of this war. Now, we must return to the mainland where they should be there to recieve is. We will destroy and rebuild. Though it's been years since he last spoke with them, I hope they have not lost faith in The Torchbearers plan.
But how could any of this have been planned?

To refer to Dema as m[y] home has never felt accurate. Dema, t[o] me, has simply been the place that I’ve existed, or, the ‘slot’ they’ve put me in. I’ve heard stories abo[u]t the ide[a] of “home,” and its depiction has always seemed warm f[r]om the storyt[e]llers’s de[s]cription. [T]here was a romant[i]c ownership of the p[l]ace they inhabited that I admired, but cou[l]d never relate to. Thi[s] place, my p[l]ace, however, s[e]ems devoid of the romance and wond[e]r that the old stories tell. But somewhere between the iron order and infallible [p]recis[i]on of Dema, a hum of wo[n]der exists. It’s this quiet wonder that my mind tends to [g]ets lost in. This hope of discovery alone has birthed a new version of myself; A better version, I hope, that will find a way to experience what’s beyond these colossal walls.

I haven’t had the ability to write for what seems like a lifetime. This deprivation is what weighed on me the most. Not the lack of food, or the change of scenery - they wouldn’t let me write anything down.
Well, at least not without them present …
I remember that day vividly. First, they let me out. Even though the hallway was still gray and drab, the new experience was a shock to my system - significantly different than usual captivity. I tried to match the rhythm of the nameless guard’s footsteps as we echoed down the long corridor. I followed close behind, as if I had no choice. Cold concrete encapsulated us and seemed to cast a spill of synthetic calmness. Obedience.
We arrived at a blue door. It was an odd contrast to this concrete maze. As I went through the doorway, I found myself in another typical gray Dema room. The only difference was who was waiting for me.
Four of them. Three of them were unknown to me, but one was clearly Keons. I knew his voice
They proposed an idea. A television show - or whatever it was. I had no idea that I was known outside of my cell, but they informed me that I had garnered notoriety for my schemes and outbursts. They wanted to use my face for the benefit of the city. They handed me a pen - a familiar instrument. Yet, they must be present when I use it. They wanted to manage my imagination and vision. Although shackled, at least I could create again.
Thus began the sessions.
Everyday my cell door would open. I followed the guard down the familiar hall, through the blue door, to sit down at the desk and chair. My designated creative space - perfectly centered under their watchful eye. Sometimes three, sometimes eight - not once were all nine present. He was never there. I would have felt it if he was.
At the end of the session, Keons would take my pen, gather my writings, and send me back. This went on for months.
What were we creating? I wasn’t sure. A variety show with songs and set pieces? Were the rulers of this stifled city actually attempting entertainment for its people? Everything I created had to be “for the benefit of the citizens of Dema” a phrase I heard often. I didn’t question them - I was happy to be out of my cell - and putting words to paper.
On the final day, I wrote the last line, I was asked to name it? The question caught me off guard. This seemed like a decision they would make.
Show Day: They dressed me up and asked me to smile a poor attempt at hiding my sleep deprivation. It was all so colorful, as if compensating for the grayness of the city.
It was a blur. Before I knew it, it was over, and I was back in my cell. I can only remember fragments - only blurred hallucinations of color and chaos - like a dream. The confusion of it all hangs overhead. What was it all for?
… but it wasn’t over
I guess it went well enough for them to request more of me. I was useful to Dema, and my creativity was exploited in new forms - They wanted me to be the entertainment at the Annual Assemblage of the Glorified - a performance at sea for the premiere citizens of Dema.
I knew those weren’t the real bishops on that ship.
I’ll quicken the entry - I need to keep up with the Torchbearer.
During the performance, we were attacked by something in the water. I don’t know what possessed the creature to attack, but it was odd, and felt incredibly intentional. Many lost their lives in the attack, and I was thrashed through the bitter cold waves, yet somehow survived. Did this icy cold preserve me? Why was I spared? I am still so cold as I write.
This place feels foreign - nothing like Trench. From the frigid sea, the air here is somehow colder than the water that surrounds it. I have a strange feeling that this island will provide answers.
I must go.

I found a way in. A way they'll never suspect, and a way they'll never understand. Everything about our cause is so hard for them to understand, but so close to the hearts of the glowing resistance. I can reach them all. I can recruit everyone with eyes that see beyond the horizon. I can teach them. They can learn what I've learned, and fly by all of the constructs Dema has placed in front of them. We will take it back.

A lifeless light surrounds us each night. Never could I imagine that something so luminous could feel so dark. It’s this glow that reminds us of the dreamless existence we’ve been sentenced to. But what I call a sentence, others accept as normalcy. How did they so efficiently eradicate the dreams within us? When the bishops instituted Vialism as mandate, they effectively reversed the hope that many arrived with.
Am I the only one who realizes that we’ve been lied to? Am I the only one not afraid of the notion that the nine have hijacked our trust, and extinguished the hope that once motivated our existence? We used to close our eyes and picture a better life, now this city is full of dry eyes caught in a trance of obedience, devoid of any trace of an identity. The only significant light I’ve seen has been in the eyes of those smeared - such a curious sight, to see bright eyes strangled by the darkness of bishop hands. As their penance fades, so dims their memory of something more. My hope of something more is all I have in this rigid tomb, and I will not let it die.

I can’t believe what I just saw. I'm still trying to understand. This whole time I was sure I was all alone - a single soul in this vast unknown world. But a few days into this trek, I looked down to see a figure headed the same way I was. I’ve tucked myself in these caves and crevices, trying my best to keep hidden, but he was out in the open, making his exhausted journey right down the middle of Trench. I was curious enough to follow alongside the path with him. He seemed unaffected by the fear of the unknown - the fear that tends to cripple me. To him, the terrain seemed familiar, as if he had been out here before.
While lost in my curiosity, they appeared. I had heard about them back in Dema, but to my knowledge, the stories were merely myth. Ten, twenty, and then what seemed to be a hundred Banditos appeared upon the cliff, all looking down at him. He only stopped for a moment to look back up at them, and then continued on his way. His energy changed, and I wasn’t sure if he was frightened or encouraged by their ominous presence.
They warned him of what was about to come.
It was a blur. First seeing the figure, then the Banditos, only to now have my eyes opened to the oncoming Bishop upon a white horse drawing closer in the distance.
The figure halted, and waited. When the Bishop stopped, I was sure he looked up, directly at me, so I hid deeper back in a cave. The presence of the robed rider seemed to paralyze the man. He stood still as he was approached, powerless as the outstretched hands smeared his neck. I had never seen a Bishop possess power like this. Keons had always seemed gentle and warm - this Bishop, at least out here, seemed like something else.
So I ran, and I’ve been running for as long as my legs and lungs can handle. Maybe this note will be my proof that what I witnessed was not a dream. A million questions race through my brain. Am I not the only one traveling through Trench?
I’ll travel a little further, and maybe I’ll get a moment of rest tonight. I may have made a mistake, leaving. This spot, between two places, is beginning to feel like an endless and hopeless abyss. At least Dema is a place that I know, and at times like this, I miss a lot about what I know. This will all be much tougher than I imagined. Nothing out here is familiar. I’ve witnessed the presence of others for the first time today, and I feel more alone than ever. Cover me.

These campfires feel like home, as I stare deeply into them, finding more and more clarity. They tried to tell us we were different. But the flame that burns inside of me is the same fire I've found on the hilltops of Trench. The Banditos have lived their rebellion, and a resistance is growing inside the concrete walls - one powerful enough to burn out all of the stale teachings, and usher in true hope and a path to actual life. We march in the morning. The revolution shall arrive with the sun.

2024.06.01 10:08 Litell_Johnn The lyrics of and parallels with the Loona discography

One of the recurring characteristics of Loona's discography up to [X X] was lyrical self-referencing: phrases and motifs that would occur in one song and then reappear down the line. It could be a little too much sometimes, but it was a reliable way to keep up the fan engagement and build something like a lyrical identity for Loona alongside a sonic one.
I wrote a post about this five years ago, and I think Dall is the first album since then to really obviously lean into it. So that warrants a follow-up. This is not a theory post - it only examines the text of the lyrics and what connections I draw there.
Translations below are from our Team Subbit versions. Along the way, I also wanted to highlight a few translation notes for discussion.

Virtual Angel

The last time we saw reference to an angel was "Egoist"'s MV, which cast Jinsoul as a "fallen angel" in big neon letters. It's interesting to me that this song, with its broken wings and vision of Eden, leans most heavily on the yyxy era, with none of those members belonging to ARTMS. Looking past that, lyrically I think it does enough to give a sense of closure to the yyxy stories.
1.
In my frozen heart Flowers have newly bloomed And what I’d hidden inside the freezing point Is my heart for you, encased in ice Your angel
This is a reprise of yyxy's "Frozen", which is entirely about the narrator being trapped in a metaphorical ice castle and being thawed out of it by love. We see the same imagery of flowers blooming to signify the thaw. Here's the chorus of that song:
Frozen, frozen Thaw me before it's too late Shine your light And bloom a flower upon frozen lands Hold me, hold me, oh now, right now Thaw me, thaw me, even warmer for me Hold me, hold me, deeper and deeper Would you become my sun
2.
The sin of having swallowed the sun Forgiven in this moment
The most overt reference in the album is, of course, from "Singing in the Rain"'s iconic prechorus 1:
For the sin of having swallowed the daytime sun Burning up, here I am
And you may remember Jinsoul already called this back in "Egoist"'s rap break:
Hey, for the sin of having swallowed you You, beautiful, grow larger You are me, now I am you
Also a translation note: I think the Modhaus sub on this line is mistaken. It currently reads "The sin of absorbing the sun // The moment it causes harm", which is just not what the original says. My best guess is that someone misread "사해진" ["forgiven", archaic] as "상해진" ["spoiled"].
3.
The Moon’s risen and my heart is complete Your angel
Moonrise is such a common image with Loona that you could name a whole bunch of songs here - "Loonatic", "Satellite", "PTT", "Wow", "Need U", and "Pale Blue Dot" just to name a few. But the way this is written specifically reminded me of two things. One is the chorus of "Let Me In", in the sense that both lines begin with the words "달이 뜨고" ("Moon rises and") followed by some kind of transformation:
The moon rises and I become you
The other is the final chorus of "Heat", where moonrise also functions as a signal:
Today I prepared for you A beautiful star is shining bright (I want to float up higher, above) This isn't the end, look up and look for me (Turn around) There, the moon is risen tonight (tonight, oh)
4.
When I open my eyes as a butterfly Save me, savior
References to Loona's most representative song, "Butterfly", have been the most common shared thread among post-lawsuit work: see Loossemble's "A Butterfly's Signal" or Heejin's "Sad Girls Club". This one is kind of random and I think it actually takes away from the song's focus a little, but it's there.
Another translation note that the "저장" ("save") in "save me" is not the word for "rescue", but instead the one for "preserve" or "keep" - like saving a digital file. So the line is not as redundant as it looks, and also helps prime for the next line where Haseul says happiness is "through the line" (which I'm reading as in electronic cords and cables).
Also, as pointed out in comments: "나비로서" ("as a butterfly") has nearly identical pronunciation as "나 비로소" ("at last I"), which is confirmed intentional. This is the second butterfly-related phonetic trick I've seen following "Sad Girls Club", where "텅 빈 나 빛나 빛이나" ("Empty me, shining, I shine") has nearly identical pronunciation as "nabi" (butterfly) repeated several times.

Sparkle

1.
Before the Sun goes down Come fetch quickly For the Moon will rise soon
It's moonrise again, but with a subtle difference. The verb used in "Virtual Angel", "Let Me In", and "Heat" is "뜨다", literally just "to rise". This one is "차오르다", which is actually more commonly used to mean the waxing of the Moon. The translation chosen here is "rise" because it's not unheard of for it to be used as "rise" and it contrasts with the sundown line above, but worth highlighting.
Trivia: has any Loona song used the "wax" verb before? Yes! One I recall is "365", where Loona liken themselves to the Moon:
I'd grow ever so small but then A tad closer towards you Again I wax and wane
2.
A different emotion We follow the light
I don't actually think this is a throwback because it's a common phrase, but I just wanted to highlight just how many times "follow the light" is used in the discography because it's a lot. All of these use the exact same phrasing ("빛을 따라") even when translated slightly differently for context.
Sonatine, bridge:
Following the faraway light
Chaotic, bridge:
Following that light, reach out to me
Rosy, bridge:
Following that light, shining on me quietly
Day & Night, prechorus:
Like a habit, I walk towards your light
Flip That, prechorus:
Following the new light that pulls me still
Day by Day, verse 1:
Following the light engraved in old memories

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

This is one of the most celestially-themed tracks any of them have ever done, which is saying something given the entire discography. As a result it has passing shades of a lot of different tracks that I won't bother to name, like the blooming image of "Chaotic" and the orbiting of "Satellite". The 12 constellations and 12 months bits are super on the nose and I'm all for it.
1.
Following the twinkling Morse code I am called dimly Click click, right here [...] The signal comes through clearly Click click, here
The most obvious parallel is another yyxy song, "Rendezvous 18.6y". Both tracks use radio signals and scanning/tuning them as a metaphor for yearning and connection, and Hitchhiker massively expands the scale of that metaphor. Here's the opening verse of Rendezvous:
Where is it from? A sound coming from somewhere Seems to have found me again, this familiar radio tone (8 point 5, what is your signal?) Among the many faint noises, coming clear Is your feelings, making me fly (fly fly fly)
While we're at it, even this jazz-standard line is kind of a throwback.
Hitchhiker:
Fly me to the moon
R18.6y:
Let's stay on the moon On the way back there [...] Let me fly to the moon
2.
Tonight perhaps two Moons may rise
The obvious comparison is Loonatic, which goes:
Three moons rise up (I'm not insane)
and also has Milky Way references just like this song. The other line that's kind of written like this is "PTT"'s "Keep open the 12 different doors", though I think I'm content to let those lyrics lie.

Flower Rhythm

1.
Adorning the sky, mystical sway Causes your heart to open too
So this reminded me of OEC's "Starlight", but only because I thought that song also combined the word "수놓다" ("to embroider", but more often used metaphorically for stars or other shiny things in the sky) with a sense of something opening. What "Starlight" actually says is this:
Like lighting in the sky The starlight slowly turns on The password solved, this night unlocks
So it was kind of similar (the "unlock" there is the same word as "open"), just without the word "adorn".
More trivia: that embroideadorn word is used in four songs -
D-1, verse 1:
Rainbow of shining stars, the studded bridge
U R, chorus:
It’s like the dotted starlight Is surrounding me
Newtopia, verse 1:
Following the tip of the star-adorned orbit
Day by Day, verse 2:
Adorning my heart full

Candy Crush

Given the subject matter, there are some natural similarities to Choerry's "Puzzle" and the aforementioned "Starlight". I love the spilling/showering light imagery at the start, which "Need U" also pulled off well:
The deepest night Light showering above my head (Candy Crush)
And stars of such faith rain down They rain to make the whole universe shine (Need U)
But I didn't notice any specific wording that hearkens back to older songs. (Obviously "Plastic Candy" can't count since it's the whole song's reference.)

Air

1.
Been been there and I’ve been been there Feel it, what what, a totally different deja vu
As we know, this is just "Butterfly". The first line is obvious and the second line is the opener of that song:
Will you whisper, you're the deja vu that wakes me up
I'm not sure there's anything else in this one, other than "Air Force One" which again shouldn't count. Daft Punk I guess?
Edit: suggested from comments - the "shak shak" section could well be an homage to "So What"'s "sho-shock".

Unf/air

This one stands out lyrically from the rest of the album, because of how down-to-earth and comparatively mundane it is. Reminds me of "Valentine Girl" and "Ding Ding Dong" in vibes, if not in expression.

Distress

It's a little curious to me that they translated this title to "Distress". It's not totally wrong, but the word "조난" specifically refers to a shipwreck or stranding. That's the reason why the song refers to signs, lights and sirens, and the context for its overall sense of being lost and drifting. I guess a distress call is maybe what they were going for.
1.
Between the time I’ve waited Always that same light
The concept of being or going "between time" is not uncommon in lyricism, probably because it's evocative yet ambiguous. I also don't think this one is an intentional callback, just a reused phrase. We see it in a few spots in the discography (interestingly, they're all songs mentioned already).
Puzzle, prechorus 1:
Between the cracks of time that passed by, you graze through
Loonatic, last chorus:
Three moons rise up (I'm not insane) Between time that has stopped
D-1, verse 1:
Between a changed passage of time
Rendezvous 18.6y, verse 2:
Beyond the gaps between renewed time and space

Butterfly Effect

As they have said, this is basically a Butterfly sequel. Perfect title as well.
1.
Do you remember The way it began as a little fluttering of wings I’m still believing Ever since that day, it grew, the hurricane in my heart (Butterfly Effect)
It starts with a little fluttering of wings Now inside my heart a hurricane (Butterfly)
2.
The torn paper moon It’s drifted too far away now, can’t reach it (Butterfly Effect)
A folded paper moon, as if to circle between it (Butterfly)
3.
Full of newness, at the end of the long journey I think I’ve reached it, dream of mine Look at the world, distant, at the end of the long journey I think it’s a new beginning, dreams of mine (Butterfly Effect)
The world becomes smaller Take me way too far, become new In this moment dreams, dreams may come true (Butterfly)

Birth

I've posted a comment before about how the Modhaus translation departs from the original. Other than that, this is a wholly original text that doesn't really have a comparison among Loona's past lyrics. Maybe it could be a new archetype for ARTMS.
I will make one shoutout to the "My birth through a false smile" line. It's like a yandere version of the "My day filled with fake smiles" bit from "See Saw".

This is not to rip on Evan, but his singing was horrible. He slurred some words, forgot lyrics or said them wrong, and just didn’t have energy.
Also, who is the new guitarist that has more energy than the whole band put together? He’s not in this pic, but was playing next to Evan all night. The dude was moving around like he owned the stage.
The venue was cool though. Next to the river, good lighting, smoke the whole show blowing like a hurricane 😝
Also, Evan didn’t even introduce the band or have too much small talk. It was very music centered and even that was off. Just my opinion. Still my favorite band, but not live.

2024.05.31 10:35 username-taken82 AN EVOLUTION OF DEGENERACY - LOOKING BACK - ASX_BETS IN HISTORY (part 4)

S'up sex kittens...

I can't believe we've managed to mod this place for another fucking year since the last one but here we are, living proof that misery does indeed, love company. If you're unsure what I'm rambling about get yourself acquainted with the history of the history in the links below before delving into, well, more history of the history.
- Part 1
- Part 2
- Part 3
Or if research isn't your thing then queue up, purchase your ticket, mind the dribble, ignore the screeching and YOLO the next 15 minutes of your life into this year's offering of all the weird and wonderful shit you cucks get up too around here.

The Death of a Sub Icon
It's always a tight race to see who gets poll position in the yearly wrap up, but this time round the old heartstrings kept pulling me back to sub icon u/ilyfish and the absolute calamity that was DW8/KDY. (Also because I forgot to edit last year's post in time and missed this)
You've seen the epic series of videos produced, the highs and lows, the lower lows, the obscenely lower lows until finally things came to the inevitable on May 5th, 2023 in the form of administration.

Death by a thousand cuts upvotes
u/Hairy_Ninja_7922 came out of the clouds with an epic bet, claiming they would YOLO 1 million clams into IXR if their post received a thousand up-doots.
However, fuckery was afoot and some investigative work by the sub's finest degenerates alerted Mods to the fact that this user had other alts all chatting away to each other attempting to pull the wool over simple minded autists. A Kangaroo Court was convened, and the verdict (shock/horror) was to kill with fire.
u/Blisser_the_Sniff completed the transaction by providing us with proof of the purchase at a later date...

The rise of a new sub MeMe
First, they took our uranium powered dildo's, then they took our ANL but we will not allow them to take our RIM jobs away... (there are very few places in the world you can write a sentence like that and be understood)
A Sub Poll was ordered when the requirement for a new meme arose, you fuckers voted en-masse and we all now welcome our new overlord RIM. Dogshit speccy mining shitco's with massive SOI's for the win!!

Thank you for your sacrifice
We ban hundreds of you fuckers every year, so Mods can probably be forgiven for not remembering every single bet or circumstance that landed you in the banned lands. But the sacrifice of u/SoftTopMafia was a favorite this year. Recognizing the lack of engagement in the daily thread during the darkest part of the winter, they nobly threw themselves upon the fires of comment numbers, got banned, won a shiny flair and managed to get the daily sparked up again.

Uranium Wars
The rare earths get a fairly decent workout round here, so u/YouHeardTheMonkey wrote up some DD on the Uranium Bull Thesis. Will the glowing rocks provide tendies for the masses?
Will lithium smite this new contender and regain its former glory?
We wait with bated breath....

Mod Stuff
- You begged and pleaded and finally Mods gave in, Media and image content was allowed into our precious threads and life has never been the same.
- Whenever u/mcfucking and I get sick of posting, we enlist the assistance of a few of our finest to start banning tards. This year, the call went out and the faithful answered in fine fashion. Thanks to u/Blisser_the_Sniff, u/ewanelaborate and yes, even a grudging nod towards the red devil u/ChZakalwe. It's no easy task keeping a track of all the betting, it's a little like herding stray cats and our cat herders this year are most appreciated.
- In what was no doubt a massive surprise to everyone, u/Competitive_Copy2451 was again released in the Easter raffle.
- We do attempt to provide a forum for some decent discussion, a noteworthy piece this last year was this thread on Boomers and inflation and shit.
- The Federal budget came, again. Various ramblings from the subs intellectual titans were captured here.

Gains
Believe it or not, folks around here do make some money as well. Below is a sampling from the gains shelf over the past 12 months.
- u/HowtoYeet24 made a tidy little sum on APX
- u/jezz1911 has finally come back into the green after being down a significant amount
- Rusty Rake Capital consistently keeps us up to date on their peculiar trading habits, owneproprietor u/Particular_Love_8811 sending through this bad boy..
- u/TheseAccountant3791 had some bags that were slightly less HVY...

Losses
Ahhh, tasty loss porn. I invite you all to sample but a small selection of the succulent loss porn delivered over the last 12 months.
- Lets kick off with the end of an era, u/joeycloud has finally thrown in the towel on MNS.
- u/JDK-Ruler contributed a mouthwateringly woeful snapshot of their portfolio...
- u/cricketmad14 pondered whether it is in fact, possible to recover from terminal stupidity. I really do enjoy the comments sections on these posts...
- u/TheseAccountant3791 hodling some HVY bags.
- Some staggering loss porn from u/Born_Mine_2260

Warm and Fuzzy
Despite the reputation this place has, y'all are some of the best fuckers on the net for donations and shit. Here is but a mere sampling of the Koality Content that pops up amid the mind-blowing losses...
- u/destined2bepoor made a bet on sub darling RNU that failed to come through and ponied up some $$ for the kiddies.
- u/1000baggers made a lovely donation after a failed 4 year bet.
- u/ItsPazzaa got on theblood bank train, earning themselves a shiny new flair.
- u/debtandregret1984 made a pledge to thedoggies in this fine offering.

Other Stuff
- u/shitforbrainstoo made y'all a lovely spreadsheet that compares feasibility studies from your favorite doggies.
- u/neke86 popped in to try and figure out what the hell happened. We are still trying to work it out ourselves, so thanks for stopping by...
- I book-marked this one but couldn't remember why. It's a post from u/angrathias about upcoming market trends. Some funny commentary and it will be interesting to see in hindsight if anyone called the new boom of something or other...
- u/murkyclouds had a run at the age old question every autismo has pondered at some point. Is it a good idea to buy incredibly micro capped shares?
- u/No-Army6095 asked us to explain the Discord. Seriously?
- u/eshay_investor threw down a 100K YOLO on some speccie piece of shit, CU6.
- Oddly, I really enjoyed this post from u/Historical_job_8609 about the crimes of the cuck brigade at HC.
- Whenever we get a legit Scam dream post, it's just too good not to mention. Granted, the Scam Dream flair can be applied a bit arbitrarily at times, but it's one of those things you know?
No one is quite sure what a Scam dream is, but when you see one, you know. Thanks to u/Particular_Amoeba_53 for providing the linked masterpiece.

Shit-Posts
If we have said it once, we've said it 42069 times. Above all, we love YOLO's, dank meme's and shitposts. But a mere sampling of the top shelf generated by our members this last year...
- u/Denominator_K with an always popular shout out to the AusFinance brigade
- u/nohorncap had a little dig (get it?) at the W.A fluro army
- u/scrnk4 gave us a day trading reality check
- Shit-post Overlord u/BigJimBeef provided us with a fine example of boomerism
- Shit-posting icon u/Competitive_Copy2451 provided us with the C1X disaster and a tribute to Bear Grylls and more Scotty Mac posts than you can shake a failed drill bit at, providing its pointed at a sycamore tree.
- Sub Favorite? u/TheEmpyreanian made the grade this year, with a sage reminder of times past.
- long term shit post contributor u/Ashley_Sophia has come through on her bet regarding dancing in front of all sorts of weird shit, or something along those lines. It's hard to tell from the video but that is often the sublime beauty Ash delivers, the observing is so much more rewarding than the understanding...
- u/Shares_44 did some deep dive research regarding stereotyping the various sub reddits...
- u/here2FuckSpiders2 rolled out an oldie but a goodie with this lil offering in the Lithium vs Uranium war..
- u/The-Mackani made us a charming little vid of TomSex..
- u/1000baggers provided us with yet another fine Hitler parody video.
- u/alllrandom shared with us some Only fans pondering and also a lovely poll regarding ASX_Bets super couples...

And alas, we come to the end of another wrap up in degeneracy.
When I wrote the original one of these, one of my first thoughts was 'holy shit a lot happens round here'. Every year, that initial thought has rung more and more true. It's just not possible to capture the depths of the madness this place inspires and honestly, I'm not sure that swimming in those waters would be survivable for any of us.
Even Plucky got taken out eventually...
That being said, if I can offer a collective what the fuck is wrong with you people? shout out to all the fine folks who made the grade this year and a sage reminder:
The lofty heights of the posting totem pole are reached, ever so briefly, by scaling the foundation built on the thousands of other posters who put in the effort before you.
Keep on keeping on gang, it's a glorious legacy you leave.

Till next year, stay sexy you magnificent bastards.

2024.05.30 18:50 mcrauthor2024 [Discussion] Getting signed (again), my ten-year journey

TLDR: Got signed 10 years ago, one book published during COVID, didn’t sell well. Needed to switch agents because of switching genres. Queried 146 agents, got 4 offers, process took 40 days total. Upmarket adult romance about leaving the church/anti-purity culture.
BACKGROUND
My story is a little different. I was signed by an agent at 23 for a novel that didn’t get picked up. It was a very cool idea and I’d always been told I was a good writer, but I had no formal creative writing training and hadn’t figured out storytelling. So, I kept writing, kept learning, and eventually my agent sold my third novel to Random House, a YA mystery/thriller. Then, COVID happened. My book had bare-bones marketing and, like most COVID debuts, did not sell according to original expectations. It was not a great time. Still, I kept writing, kept learning.
I ended up leaving my agency a few months ago on good terms after realizing I wanted to switch from mystery/thriller to romance (which my agency didn’t represent). A few years ago, I had written an anti-purity culture romance novel about leaving the church. It was an unexpected passion project that, now, I really wanted to go somewhere. I spent two months revising it and cutting down the word count (125k to 92k words), drafted my query materials, and entered the trenches again at age 33.
QUERYING
I had a lot going for me as I started the query process—multiple publications, having prior representation—but those things could also be strikes against me. My first book didn’t sell well, and leaving an agent for another isn’t a red flag, but it can raise some eyebrows. (My former agent emailed me to let me know agents had reached out to her and she was saying good things, which was very nice.)
Another thing that was both a plus and a minus was my book. I love it, it has a killer hook, and upmarket romance is very in-demand right now, but I also knew it wasn’t going to be for everyone. It straddles multiple genres and is working with a lot of different themes, so at the advice of an author coach (he’s a retired literary agent; I paid him for an hour of his time to chat and give me advice about switching agents), I threw out a wide net. I queried just under 150 agents in two weeks, basically everyone who represented romance and/or women’s fiction. Only a handful of my query letters were personalized to the agent. (My query is at the bottom of this post along with the first 400 words of my manuscript.)
I got a lot of interest right away, along with a lot of rejections. In fact, the first two people who requested the full book passed fairly quickly, which made me paranoid as hell. I had also gotten 30+ query rejections at that point. What was also really tough is that I’m on west coast time; I wake up at 7AM, which is 10AM in New York, so the first thing I would see in the morning were rejections from agents starting their day.
REJECTIONS
I was fortunate to get a fair amount of personalized feedback during the query process. My general observation is that rejections are valid, but they are also subjective and often contradictory because reading is highly personal. A few examples: some agents said the topic of religious trauma hit too close to home, while others couldn’t relate to it; two agents rejected me back-to-back, the first one saying, “this is great but I’m not sure how to sell it,” the second, “this is so sellable but I didn’t connect with it”; some liked the story itself but not my writing style; others said I was a great writer but they didn’t like the story; I also got several rejections that said, in essence, ‘good but not good enough.’
Another note: the offering agents’ suggested revisions pointed out the same weaknesses from my more personalized rejections. The difference is the offering agents thought these easily fixable issues to address before sending the book out to publishing houses, while for others they were clearly deal-breakers. (The revisions were to trim down one of the side plots, and to add more of the antagonist’s looming presence before his grand reveal at the end of the book.)
It’s really hard to find an agent who loves your book as a whole: plot, characters, themes, writing style, all of it, and will forgive any weaknesses your book does have because they are that passionate about the story. I’m glad I cast such a wide net.
OFFERS
On day 19 (every day in the query process is actually a year), I got my first offer. I immediately let everyone else know, save for about ~15 agents I wasn’t as excited about. This meant contacting ~75 agents I had queried with the deadline who hadn’t rejected me yet, along with the handful of agents already reading the manuscript. I wanted to give my book the best shot by having every option available to me. By that point several agents who had requested the book had passed, so I knew that even with contacting all those other agents, I was unlikely to get a flood of offers. Indeed, I got a flood of “congrats but not for me” responses, but also several more requests for the book. Six days after my first offer, I got my second offer. 11 days later, I got a third. Three days after that, my fourth. (My first offer gave me a generous time limit, my second gave me two weeks.)
Timeline:
Queried 4/28; full request 5/7; offer 5/9
Queried 5/8; full request 5/8; offer 5/15; accepted offer & signed 5/30
Queried 4/27; offer nudge 5/14; full request 5/20; offer 5/26
Queried 4/21; offer nudge 5/10; full request 5/21; offer 5/29
I had a video call with all agents who offered. One agent was with a small agency, one was with a talent/entertainment agency that also does publishing, and the other two offers were from major literary agencies. My meetings with the smaller agency and the talent agency lasted 30 minutes, while my meetings with the larger agencies lasted an hour. In all the calls, we discussed my past writing, my hopes for my career moving forward, as well as suggested revisions for the book and a rough editorial timeline. They also told me about themselves and their agencies as a whole.
All agents were great with zero red flags, similar visions for the book, and a clear appreciation for my work and the story. It was really hard to turn anyone down, because everyone was lovely and enthusiastic. In the end, the decision came down to contacts, experience, how well I thought we’d work together, and also just a weird gut feeling of rightness with the agent I chose.
STATS
I sent out my first query on April 21st. Over 95% of my queries were sent in a ten-day window, but whenever I would get a rejection, I’d see if I could query another agent in that agency. My last query was sent on May 5th. I signed with my agent on May 30th.
146 queries, 40 days between first query and signing (April 21st to May 30th)

REFLECTIONS
Querying today is a lot different than it was in 2014, when I got my first agent. It is both a smoother process (I used Query TrackeQuery Manager and Publishers Marketplace) and way more intense. It’s hard to keep yourself calm and confident. I have a wonderful therapist, medication, my little mental health toolkit of coping mechanisms, an incredibly supportive family and writing community, and it was still rough. Ten years into seriously writing novels, I am only now able to admit I have talent and can do this, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t setbacks and disappointments. I have written six full books, including this one, and only one has been published so far (once this book sells, I will be two-for-six). Even though Past and the Prodigal Girl is by far my strongest work, it was still getting rejected left, right and center during the query process.
You have to really want it in traditional publishing. You have to be willing to shelve projects you’ve worked on for years and keep writing, keep growing. If I can give any advice, it would be to give yourself all the time in the world—your whole life, honestly—and not limit yourself to a “published by ____ age” date. And please, for the love of God, ignore the college students getting major deals. They are not the norm. ~Getting traditionally published is not the norm~. If you can achieve that, you have literally reached the 1% of writers (upon which you will immediately start comparing yourself to the 1% of that 1% and be upset you’re not a #1 NYT Bestseller. Ask me how I know.).
It’s nuts out here. We are nuts. A bunch of sensitive, proud and paranoid artists who are all just trying to create something real and have others tell us it’s real, too. You’re doing great, all of you.

Here’s my query letter and the first 400 words of my book.
Dear [AGENT NAME],
I am a young author who has been published by Random House [xxxxx] and The Boston Globe. Though previously represented by [xxxxx], I am currently seeking new representation, as I am shifting my focus from mystery to women’s fiction/upmarket romance.
PAST AND THE PRODIGAL GIRL is a 92k-word high concept romance novel with series potential. It translates the religious trauma discussed in THE EXVANGELICALS and PURE into a love story similar to IT ENDS WITH US without physical violence. But the stakes are still high because this protagonist didn’t just leave her toxic husband, but also the God of fundamentalist Christianity, who might be even worse. If you’re looking for a unique spin on a contemporary romance written for an upmarket audience that delves into complex social issues, this is it.
Caroline Rey walked away from the church five years ago, and she’s fine. Really. An archivist for the city of Waterloo, she prides herself on the meticulous preservation of history, though her love for the past doesn’t extend to her own. When she meets fellow city employee Evan Rutherford and begins her first real relationship since her deconversion, she is forced to confront the trauma regarding her previous life, her devastating marriage, and even her own body and desires. Evan, meanwhile, has his own demons—a sordid family history and a rigid perfectionism driven by a fear of repeating old mistakes. After the archive (and Caroline) teach him more about Waterloo, including a 100-year-old plan that tore apart the city and its people, he realizes ugly truths don’t stay buried unless people want them to be. But once you excavate everything…then what? If you bring the past into the present, and it’s bad, is a future even possible? Or is everything just too fallen to be redeemed? For Caroline, the answer hinges on one of the best things the church ever taught her: grace. Except this time it doesn’t come from God, but from herself.
I began drafting this book after January 6th, an event that also galvanized me to write about the religious undertones in the insurrection for The Boston Globe (“xxxxx”). This manuscript is a continuation of the themes of that article, as well as a culmination of my experience deconstructing from white evangelical Christianity while working at an archive.
In what some have called “The Great Dechurching”, over forty million Americans have stopped attending church in the past twenty-five years (including myself). There has been a recent flood of nonfiction, memoir, documentaries, and even podcasts and music on this topic (JESUS AND JOHN WAYNE, THE WOMAN THEY WANTED, SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE, LEAVING EDEN, PREACHER’S KID), but a scarcity of fiction. I believe there is a huge untapped market here, a whole generation that is hungry for a story about healing from these very specific wounds. Over the past several years, I have spent countless hours reading about and listening to pain that mirrors mine, trying to understand how it all happened and where we go from here. I have poured everything I’ve learned into this book, the story of a prodigal who never returns because the further she walks from the gates of heaven, the more she realizes it was a cage the whole time.
Thank you for your consideration,

Prologue
It’s incredible to him that wives can just leave.
Five years she’s been gone, and two years since James has even spoken to her. He’s seen her, obviously. As though he wouldn’t be watching, visiting the city. She has a job, an apartment, random lovers. Vows mean nothing to her. Perhaps they never did. He thinks about this often, where it went wrong, how the enemy got its claws into her. He must not have been vigilant enough. Well, he is now. He is prayerful and patient. He sends gifts. He keeps in touch with her parents, who are as devastated by her sin as he is.
In the rare moments he falls into despair and anger, he reminds himself that his suffering is incomparable to God’s. She rejected Him too, spat on spilled blood, but there is nowhere she can go that He will not follow. He is faithful to redeem.
Soon, she will repent and return. She will stand on stage with him and admit all she has done, and proclaim how God’s power was made perfect in her unspeakable weakness. God told him this would be so, and God always keeps His Word, which James has been clinging to more and more these days. God puts a specific verse on his heart at night, when sleep and still waters elude him.
Vengeance is mine.
Yes, James prays in the dark. As are all things.
But he’s getting impatient for the ending that was promised to him.
Chapter One
She lived the first twenty-three years of her life in a fairytale edged with fire. Caroline was a daughter of the king, a warrior on the side of the angels. There was joy there, real joy. Sometimes outside it she feels strangely amiss, the way they warned her she would be without the protection of the way, the truth, and the life. It’s not that she regrets leaving, nor does she think she could have possibly stayed after what happened—everyone has a breaking point—but it’s very strange to be resurrected for a second time. She’s not born again anymore. She’s born again again. The story is different now, but it’s set in the same world she was taught to fight against and hide from and save. So, she’s just casually there, trying to pretend she was not just waging battle against shadows and sin, all while gently nudging her discarded armor and weapons out of sight.

2024.05.30 18:36 CreepyTruck6266 A terrorist's Quran

A terrorist's Quran
Verse 9:29 states:
Fight those who do not believe in Allah or in the Last Day and who do not consider unlawful what Allah [1] and His Messenger [2] have made unlawful and who do not adopt the religion of truth from those who were given the Scripture – [fight] until they give the jizyah willingly while they are humbled.
Tafsir Al-Jalalayn of verse 9.29 says:
Fight those who do not believe in God, nor in the Last Day, for, otherwise, they would have believed in the Prophet (s), and who do not forbid what God and His Messenger have forbidden, such as wine, nor do they practise the religion of truth, the firm one, the one that abrogated other religions, namely, the religion of Islam — from among of those who (min, ‘from’, explains [the previous] alladhīna, ‘those who’) have been given the Scripture, namely, the Jews and the Christians, until they pay the jizya tribute, the annual tax imposed them, readily (‘an yadin is a circumstantial qualifier, meaning, ‘compliantly’, or ‘by their own hands’, not delegating it [to others to pay]), being subdued, [being made] submissive and compliant to the authority of Islam.
This makes old-school Islam a religious militant-political party at perpetual war with non-Muslims, driven by an abrogation-expansionist framework (Naskh), which according to Islamists cancels earlier peaceful verses of the Quran to make sense of the self-contradictory passages from the times when Muhammad and his army were small and weak. And chapter 9 was the last which includes this verse.
Islamists use Taqiyya or deception to advance their agenda of undermining secularism either through violent means or by cowardly shunning jihad and embracing democracy like the Muslim Brotherhood. Since the failure of violent means because of debilitating Western military responses, they have become increasingly furtive in advancing their agenda. A prominent example being the OIC coming together to legislate a global blasphemy law in the UN. They smile at your face but the mirror of truth strips naked the demon. How many Muslims are actually Islamists? Well, they conducted so many protests openly calling for the destruction of Israel but I had seen none for the sake of Charlie Hebdo. On the contrary, they came out with posters proclaiming “Je suis Muslim” to sympathize with the terrorists and make a mockery of our mourning which we collectively expressed with “Je suis Charlie”. Do you really think they will stand by your side at their Caliph’s call? Fools, they don’t acknowledge the brotherhood of man or blood or soil. They are only loyal to their fellow faithfuls. Know them before it’s too late for they surely know our ignorance. O Crusaders, rally our troops, the time has come. I feel suffocated with Hizb ut-Tahrir marching amok our streets. If we tolerant everything, we stand for nothing. By calling people Islamophobic and silencing them, our enemies have effectively brought in their Sharia blasphemy law. They have struck upon our eyes and blinded us. We are being silently herded into a gorge, yet unaware of our doom. While our soldiers fight to uphold our freedoms and keep us safe from external aggression, this cancer is allowed to freely grow in our midst.
We can see how those who recite this verse with their hearts are a clear threat, along with their Sharia-ordained death penalties for righteous resistance, apostasy, blasphemy (also interpreted as akin to apostasy), etc. Other things made unlawful (Haram) can be found in Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi's book, The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam. If there is no Islamic government to enforce Sharia with the ministry for the “Propagation of Virtue and Prevention of Vice”, then the society will do its job. Have you been oblivious to the terror attack on Salman Rushdie and the many Bangladeshi atheists who were killed for blasphemy? Remain ever vigilant to the establishment of Sharia governed enclaves in our western societies. They are early warning signs towards an Islamic state.
Those individuals, parties, or states that do not observe these prohibitions or Sharia (derived from the Quran [1] and Sunnah [2], where the latter comes from the Hadiths documenting the actions of the Messenger) are lawful targets through this inciting verse. Islamists have a global ambition to establish a uniquely blended religious-political totalitarian caliphate governed by Sharia law where non-Muslims are subjected to a secondary status (Dhimmi) and made to pay Jizya.
The reformers throw three main arguments to challenge Islamists. These have been staunchly refuted by them using the two Sahih (authentic) Hadiths (Sahih Muslim and Sahih al-Bukhari), which are fully accepted by Sunni Islamists.
  1. Fight means to fight intellectually.
Response: It's worth noting that the verb Qaatilu, literally meaning 'fight' is also employed in Sahih Muslim 1731a, b, within the context of an Islamic jihad military campaign (ghazwa) commanded by Muhammad. Here, its usage heavily conveys a 'physical fight' against adversaries. Furthermore, it's noteworthy that this verb is closely related to the noun Qatl, referring to a 'murder'. If the intent were for an 'intellectual fight', Allah would say Jadil, meaning argue/debate. This is used in 16:125, so Allah was not unfamiliar with it, and since the Quran is the speech of Allah, it would be reasonable to expect that Allah would be prudent and select the precise word for his intentions rather than let everybody misinterpret it for centuries.
  1. It was revealed during the Tabuk expedition in a defensive context against Ghassanid (Byzantine vassal) aggression as alluded to in Sahih al-Bukhari 2468/Sahih al-Bukhari 2948, and only applicable in times of war as with the pagans polytheists in 9:13/9:36 and the People of the Book in 33:26.
Response: What have all these wars have to do with a fighting commandment for not forbidding that which Allah has mandated. This verse is proof that our lord wanted us to enforce Sharia and extract Jizya from all religions based on a book whether at peace or war.
  1. Jizya is collected only temporarily as war reparations and is not discriminatory.
Response: Absolutely no evidence. Jizya is to last until the coming of Jesus Christ as stated in Sahih al-Bukhari 2476, and it bans non-Muslims from armed service as per Sahih al-Bukhari 3052.
On apostasy and blasphemy: Verse 2:256 and 18:29 does not call for any action on those who turn away from Islam. There is no punishment for blasphemy in the Quran as in verse 6:108, and 4:140 tells to run away.
Islamist: All this has been abrogated with 9:29 and Allah’s command to make unlawful that which has been made unlawful by “his Messenger”, including apostasy and blasphemy, as documented in the Hadiths. To reconcile it with the Quran, freedom of religion is allowed but only before entering the fold of Islam.
Verse 9:29 is then further bolstered by verse 9:123, which states:
O you who have believed, fight those adjacent to you of the disbelievers and let them find in you harshness. And know that Allah is with the righteous.
Ibn Kathir, for this verse, explains that:
Allah commands the believers to fight the disbelievers, the closest in area to the Islamic state, then the farthest. This is why the Messenger of Allah started fighting the idolators in the Arabian Peninsula. When he finished with them and Allah gave him control over Makkah, Al-Madinah, At-Ta’if, Yemen, Yamamah, Hajr, Khaybar, Hadramawt and other Arab provinces, and the various Arab tribes entered Islam in large crowds, he then started fighting the People of the Scriptures. He began preparations to fight the Romans who were the closest in area to the Arabian Peninsula, and as such, had the most right to be called to Islam, especially since they were from the People of the Scriptures. The Prophet marched until he reached Tabuk and went back because of the extreme hardship, little rain and little supplies. This battle occurred on the ninth year after his Hijrah. In the tenth year, the Messenger of Allah was busy with the Farewell Hajj. The Messenger died eighty-one days after he returned from that Hajj, Allah chose him for what He had prepared for him ﴿in Paradise﴾. After his death, his executor, friend, and Khalifah, Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, became the leader. At that time, the religion came under attack and would have been defeated, if it had not been for the fact that Allah gave the religion firmness through Abu Bakr, who established its basis and made its foundations firm. He brought those who strayed from the religion back to it, and made those who reverted from Islam return. He took the Zakah from the evil people who did not want to pay it, and explained the truth to those who were unaware of it. On behalf of the Prophet , Abu Bakr delivered what he was entrusted with. Then, he started preparing the Islamic armies to fight the Roman cross worshippers, and the Persian fire worshippers. By the blessing of his mission, Allah opened the lands for him and brought down Caesar and Kisra and those who obeyed them among the servants. Abu Bakr spent their treasures in the cause of Allah, just as the Messenger of Allah had foretold would happen. This mission continued after Abu Bakr at the hands of he whom Abu Bakr chose to be his successor, Al-Faruq, the Martyr of the Mihrab, Abu Hafs, `Umar bin Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him. With `Umar, Allah humiliated the disbelievers, suppressed the tyrants and hypocrites, and opened the eastern and western parts of the world. The treasures of various countries were brought to `Umar from near and far provinces, and he divided them according to the legitimate and accepted method. `Umar then died as a martyr after he lived a praise worthy life. Then, the Companions among the Muhajirin and Ansar agreed to chose after `Umar, `Uthman bin `Affan, Leader of the faithful and Martyr of the House, may Allah be pleased with him. During `Uthman’s reign, Islam wore its widest garment and Allah’s unequivocal proof was established in various parts of the world over the necks of the servants. Islam appeared in the eastern and western parts of the world and Allah’s Word was elevated and His religion apparent. The pure religion reached its deepest aims against Allah’s enemies, and whenever Muslims overcame an Ummah, they moved to the next one, and then the next one, crushing the tyranical evil doers.

Note: To the radical followers of the Salaf ("true" Islamists) who have embraced Salafi jihadism, there are no mountains in the sky used to store hail which Allah uses to strike people, as per verse 24:43. And, neither does the Sun ever set or rise no matter how far one travels, as per verses 18:85-90. After reading verses 4:11-12, I have to conclude that Allah never took math classes. How stupid is it to believe that God sits on a throne, which is carried by 8 angels extending over the heavens and Earth and that he can fold the heavens into his right hand. Evildoers, stop sharia totalitarianism (here and here, every Taliban ban in there has its basis in the Quran and Hadith corpus, if ye will look), promoting gender inequality, flouting our inheritance laws established through democratic processes with the help of Sharia courts and accepting the marriage of little girls to older men. This earth is only a pit stop for you retards who choose God above sense to make laws and nations sink into poverty which befalls upon both Muslims and non-Muslims.
Islam clouds children with all-consuming fear and dehumanizing hate to the extent that they wish death (“qatalahumul laah/may Allah kill them”) upon Jews and Christians. This verse, 9:30, comes right after to contextualize 9:29. Free the children from this evil deity, from his laws, let them love, think and act freely, unobstructed, without the fear of God’s retribution. There is a dire need of a religion of love to be ingrained in our children by means of a collective education system because all the freedoms that we enjoy today have their basis in love, in Christ’s love. Religion is everything. It sets the bedrock values of our civilization. It is said that changing religion is like changing worlds. This is why Muhammad bin Qasim is said to be the first Pakistani.
Moral pressure from the West keeps the Islamic world in check but we should not be forever hopeful of this status quo. Iran was once free and then suddenly, the Velayat-e faqih. Afghanistan was once free and then suddenly, the Taliban. Pakistan was once free and then suddenly, the Nizam-e-Mustafa. India was once free under ex-Muslim emperor Akbar’s Sulh-i-Kul policy and then suddenly, the Fatawa ‘Alamgiri. Turkey is free until deism lasts. Even to this day and age, Muslim states don’t understand equality, the idea of fostering a sense of belonging for all and have Islam designated as the one supreme official religion to remind minorities of their dhimmitude and also because Islam is both state and religion. The Quran actually sounds much like al-Qaeda’s letter to the American people; here and there claiming to be victims and acting in self-defence while at the same time wanting to establish Sharia law over the globe through jihad.
Remove the deceptive chaff and the truth shall reveal itself to those who seek it adamantly.
