2024.05.16 14:40 IndoCaribboy Any advice for a newbie ?

I am a second year, Computer Engineering student, and i have experience with Java, C and basic python. I want to get my hands wet by doing a project to scrape data using Python, while I continue to learn Python. Can i message anyone for mentorship or advice ?. I have some ideas on what data, i'd like to get but still not entirely sure as just about everything is saturated. Feel free to comment if I'm being too unrealistic for now. I would love to message someone with a business tho. I'd love to work with someone as well, as I'm into sports we can work on some projects where this is concerned.

2024.05.16 14:25 ImBoredasfboi AITA : for not putting my group mates names on the project and causing them to fail the class?

i (19m) was assigned by the professor to a random group which had 4 other students. we were assigned a project where we had to make a diagnosis and treatment plan for a case that will be selected by the professor for each group. it was for 40% of the total grade then we had to present it.
the professor gave us the case and i was just praying that we got one of the easier cases. we were assigned a case for a child that had a neurological disorder. it was the HARDEST case of all of the possible ones that you could get, but i was like its okay we can still research and ask the professors etc.
i asked them when can we meet to start working on the project many times and every time they just leave me on read or reply with we’re busy. i stopped asking them but would send them updates whenever i do something for the project (and btw i had to go to multiple hospitals/physicians and ask them for data about this project it was very time consuming and not easy at all to do alone especially as a person who has social anxiety)
i asked one of them after class on how far was he in the project he said that he didn’t even start working on it he had other stuff to worry about.
So i just waited until a week before the deadline and asked them that we need to practice for the presentation and they should email me what they wrote so i can put it all together. AND ALL 4 OF THEM RESPONDED WITH SOME SORT OF VERSION OF THIS “sorry we cant do anything because the case is too hard please do my part since you understand about the case more than we do” and that was the last straw for me i was already extremely stressed with alot happening in my personal life but also i had a ton of work and other projects.
I didn’t respond to any of their texts and just did the whole project myself since i already have done all the research and gathered everything i needed. I didn’t put their names on it because that was a requirement that you need to submit the names of each member of the group and i emailed the professor about the whole situation.
On presentation day, 3 out of 4 members of my group were present. the professor said “this group only has one student come up and present”. one of them said to the professor that we are actually 5 but one is absent. the professor said “only one student did the work so only he can present”
They were all FUMING. But it was genuinely one of the best presentations ive ever did i got a full mark and the professor said that she was very pleased with my presentation and project and she is very proud that i am one of her students.
After class all of them were screaming at me that i am a horrible person and calling me names, one of them started crying because this will cause her to fail and may lose her scholarship and i was like if you have anything talk to the professor, AITA?

2024.05.16 13:59 eatsomepizzabro First time mi band buyer - which one should I get?

I have never had a mi band (or other fitness tracker or smartwatch) and want something inexpensive that also works for my minimum needs. I bike to commute and go to the gym and on runs regularly every week I want to have those activities tracked as well as some health data (like EPOC if it’s available with these bands) as well as sleep tracking. I also want it to sync to Apple health if possible.
I also have a question about how the band fits for the different models as well as if I wear it to sleep if the screen might scratch or crack.
Thanks, friends!

2024.05.16 13:56 Aakarsh-Coding-223 Suggestion on my thinking process and my approach towards my future goal.

I just created a reddit account and earlier I used to surf reddit without having an account and used to stumble on this subreddit from time to time. I don't know how many people are going to read it but here is some information about me: My College: VIT Vellore (CSE Core) and I just gave my end-sem exams so now I will be a 2nd year student starting my 3rd sem in July. I have a long ass holiday till then. I am serious about my future and what I wanna do in my life. The only goal I have right now (be it positive or negative) is to earn money.. a lot of money so that I can gift my parents and my close friends all the good things that they deserve. I like giving people gifts and I wanna do it with my money. I don't know how good is VIT Vellore cse core ka placement. I currently have a gpa of 8.73 (jo first sem mein aai thi second sem bhi accha hi gaya hai ig). I have been through enough posts talking about vit vellore cse core ke placements where one talks about you will easily get placed in a 3-4L company or even 12-14L company which I don't want. I want to grow and earn more than that. It may sound childish or immature but I don't think it is bad to ask to earn more after putting in efforts that I am willing to put. So I decided to not think about my college ke placements and treat VIT as if it is a tier 3 college like amity noida where you don't really get placed and focus on myself to get a good off campus placements and an internship uske pehle.. Abhi my next goal is to get an internship as fast as I can.
My Plan: I haven't decided to give up on my studies in college. I will still study hard to make sure my GPA stays high so that if I want to go for masters in the US then I can do that without thinking about low grades in college. I will during my holidays dedicate my time to DSA and practicing uske questions on leetcode and all but apart from that I wanted to make my social presence so that people know I exsit and I contribute through my presence. I decided to work on a couple of projects (one big project and thre to four small projects) and then make youtube tutorial on how to make those projects and also create posts on the this subreddit and other subreddits (that I dont know about.. would love to know if there is another subreddit like this) where I share my progress report on how far I have come on these projects. I think if I do all of these then they will make my stand out of the crowd and help me get placed as an intern pehle and then a full time employee in a good company and also help me build a strong profile if I want to go to the US for my Masters.
My Projects; The big project that I have decided to work on is a cloud data storage project. I haven't seen any tutorial on how to make it so I guess I will be the first person doing it and then uploading the tutorial on the channel and then other three to four projects that I currently don't have any idea about.
How the project will go: The user will have a web ui where they will be able to transfer files and I will check if the server and database (which in this case will be my laptop) is online or not (so if the laptop is on or not).. if it is then I will transfer the files from the user's device to my laptop's ssd partition with them being encrypted of course so that I also get to practice the concept of encryption. This is what I have thought and before proceeding I would like for everyone here reading this post to give me their opinion if they think I am on the right track or is this just another way to waste my time.

Innovation, creation, and transformation are the pillars that uphold the essence of Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). In today's dynamic digital space, where technology evolves at a rapid pace, B. Tech CSE programs play a pivotal role in shaping future tech leaders and innovators. Let's delve into how these programs encapsulate the spirit of innovation, creation, and transformation.
Innovation at the Core
At the heart of CSE education lies innovation. Students who aspire to take B. Tech CSE admission is encouraged to think beyond conventional boundaries and explore new horizons in technology. From learning cutting-edge programming languages to delving into artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science, innovation is ingrained in every aspect of the curriculum.
Innovation also thrives through hands-on projects, hackathons, and tech competitions. These avenues provide students with real-world challenges, pushing them to think innovatively and come up with creative solutions. It's not just about coding; it's about using technology as a tool to address complex problems and drive positive change.
Creation of Solutions
Students with B. Tech CSE eligibility are groomed to become problem solvers, equipped with the knowledge and skills to develop software applications, design efficient algorithms, and build robust systems.
Through coursework and practical training, students learn the art of software development lifecycle, from conceptualization to deployment. They delve into software engineering principles, user experience (UX) design, and software testing methodologies, ensuring that the solutions they create are not just functional but also user-friendly and reliable.
Moreover, B.Tech CSE programs foster a culture of entrepreneurship, encouraging students to transform their innovative ideas into viable tech startups. Entrepreneurship courses, incubation centers, and mentorship programs provide the necessary guidance and support for aspiring tech entrepreneurs to thrive.
Transformation through Technology
The transformative power of technology is at the forefront of B. Tech CSE education. Students explore emerging technologies such as blockchain, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and cybersecurity, understanding how these technologies can reshape industries and societies.
One of the key areas of transformation is digitalization. B.Tech CSE programs emphasize digital transformation strategies, preparing students to lead organizations in adopting digital technologies for enhanced efficiency, productivity, and customer experience. Whether it's implementing big data analytics for data-driven decision-making or leveraging AI for automation, students learn to harness technology for transformative impact.
Furthermore, B.Tech CSE education instills a sense of social responsibility. Students are encouraged to use their technical expertise for social good, addressing global challenges such as climate change, healthcare access, and education inequality through technological innovations.
The Role of Industry Collaboration
Collaboration with industry is vital in shaping the essence of B.Tech CSE education. Universities partner with leading tech companies, research institutions, and startups to provide students with exposure to real-world projects, internships, mentorship programs and good B. Tech CSE placement.
Industry collaborations also ensure that the curriculum remains relevant and aligned with industry trends and demands. Guest lectures, workshops, and industry visits bridge the gap between academia and industry, giving students insights into industry best practices and challenges.
Thus, B.Tech CSE education embodies the spirit of innovation, creation, and transformation. It empowers students to become future-ready tech leaders who can drive innovation, create impactful solutions and contribute to transformative change. With a blend of technical expertise, creativity, and a mindset for continuous learning, B.Tech CSE graduates are poised to make significant contributions to the ever-evolving tech landscape.

2024.05.16 13:24 ctg "GPS data going into the meza..." Repeatedly (GPS Spoofing)

GPS data going into the meza
The only way I can rationalize this is by applying lessons learned from the first GPS spoofing/mass jamming at 2016.
mass jamming http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/06/07/us_military_testing_gps_jamming/
gps spoofing http://spectrum.ieee.org/telecom/security/protecting-gps-from-spoofers-is-critical-to-the-future-of-navigation
For some reason the launch GPS trackers are spoofed (in the real time) and the signal either leads to underground or into one of the rockfaces/entry points. Why?

2024.05.16 13:16 philip_sterne Building a cluster for university students

I am a CS professor who will be running a distributed systems tutorial next semester. Now I have some practical experience with distributed systems (eg. Kafka, Zookeeper), but I have very little sysadmin experience. So I will describe my rough situation, and I'm asking for any and all of your opinions/suggestions/links etc.
I have a little 3-node Proxmox cluster that I would like to use as a test-bed for the students to mess around on. (There are roughly 10 students per semester taking this tutorial, but if it goes well I would open it up to ±60 students in related courses.)
My two main requirements are: 1. Low maintenance. I don't have time during the semester to do much maintenance (eg. scanning home drives to see who is over quota, adding new user ssh keys). 2. Reasonably resilient to dumb-assery. Students will be learning lots of new concepts for the first time, and I don't want one student to take down the whole cluster for everyone else.
I am also aware that there is only 1Gbps ethernet connecting the nodes, but I kinda view that as a feature, rather than a bug. I want students to think of network access as slow, while local access is fast.
My current thoughts: 1. I would like to have a central home directory that is mounted on each node. (So any files you create in your home directory are immediately available everywhere) 2. I think LDAP is the right solution to do authentication, and sync UIDs and GIDs between the nodes? (Although setting it up does look quite daunting!) 3. I'd hack together some sort auto-signup solution. eg. A google form (limited to university email addresses) where students can upload their ssh pub keys. Run a cron job which periodically downloads the backing spreadsheets and creates the users / updates ssh keys as appropriate. 4. Each node has an nvme drive, and a hard drive. So I was planning on storing all the vms on the nvme drive, with a passthrough mount of the hard drive on /data. This means that students would only ever be able to modify things in two places, home and data. 5. Each node can run a single Ubuntu VM for students to work on. One of the nodes is beefier than the others, so it could also run an openldap server, and serve the shared home directory.
Please critique! What am I missing? Is this too complicated, and if so, how can I make it simpler? Have you done something similar? What advice would you give me?
Obligatory meme for reading so far:

2024.05.16 12:31 dejanvu Good crypto data sources

Hi there! I'm doing a dissertation on crypto options and wanted to ask what the largest exchanges and best open source data sources were for spot and options.
Really would value insight from algo traders/researchers who have their own favourites. Of course as a student I am limited w.r.t. pricing.
I've had a look online and there are multiple lists looking at 24h volume, trust score and stuff like that. There's nothing on longer term volume so you'll sometimes see massive 24h volume on super dodgy exchanges I've never heard of.
Current ones I am planning to use: OKX, Binance, ByBit, Kraken.
They seem to have open source data that I can run some analytics on.
Paywalled but I wish I could find good data on: Deribit
Their data seems to be run through some paywalled site called tardis . dev which I can't use even though the data looks good there.
Are there any I'm missing?
Anyway thanks for your insight and time guys.

Hi everyone, I am currently a game development masters UX research student at the University of Skovde in Sweden completing my thesis with the purpose of researching how player learning can be increased in cybersecurity education games. There are 2 different surveys available, one I have included a simple game to play (Group 2) using the screentop.gg platform as well as a separate survey for testing knowledge of cybersecurity topics with a simple test (Group 1) for comparison of those who played vs. didn't. Feel free to participate in either one (Choose one, don't do both). Your participation in this study would greatly contribute to my research in understanding how to effectively leverage gaming platforms for educational purposes. If you love games but don't have a lot of knowledge in cybersecurity then you are the right person for this study. I would also advise completing this on a PC but whatever can work for you would be fine.
Study Details:
Purpose: To investigate strategies for increasing player learning in cybersecurity education games.
Methodology: Participants will engage with a specially designed cybersecurity game and provide feedback through a survey.
Time Commitment: Unlimited time for game play followed by a short survey for feedback and data.
If you are interested in joining this study or would like more information, please click on either one of the links below to participate. Your participation will be kept confidential, and your privacy will be strictly protected throughout the study and may leave whenever you want:

2024.05.16 11:51 dejanvu Largest crypto options exchanges

Hi guys just wanted to ask what the largest/most popular crypto options exchanges are. Doing a dissertation on crypto so want to get my transaction/px data from the top places so it is as representative of the market as reasonably possible.
There's a 3y old post in here but I consider it less relevant because crypto is still such a changing space. Also have looked at top lists relating to 24h volume/trust score etc. and frequently there are dodgy exchanges at the top. So wanted to come and ask people who trade this stuff fr in case I've missed any crucial ones.
Current core list: OKX, Binance, Bybit, Kraken.
Deribit I'm aware of too but they run their data through tardis.dev and this is paywalled which makes it redundant to a student like myself.

2024.05.16 11:39 IncomeTraditional995 Recovering Data Scientist here, what must I do?

Heads up!! sorry if this is a rant about my situation but I gotta get some help/opinion about how do I go about my career. I was fresh out of Uni (with a Masters in Data Engineering) and I was hired by a Media Agency as a Data Scientist 9 months ago. Before this I was a Data Science working student at a SaaS company where I learnt a lot about Reinforcement Learning, Azure Cloud, DevOps processes etc. It felt like a huge step forward as it was the first time I was seeing such services used in prod. Coming back to the time I was hired into my full time position, the Data Team before I joined consisted of 8 people 2 Senior Data Scientists and 2 mid-level, a guy who was like a product manager kind of person never knew what he actually contributed and 3 analysts (Have 0 knowledge about BI tools or code) they just had to analyse simple social media data. I was hired as a Junior Data Scientist (After 3 of the Data Scientists were fired) and to my shock I saw that there was no data infrastructure setup, I mean they had no data infrastructure at all. The data scientists used to run their own stuff on the computers never used git. No code base of what they did to refer to. They would throw up ad-hoc tasks and we had to figure a way out to get data by ourselves and do some analytics on it, data was shared as excel sheets on teams. There was no collaboration or contribution. I was left to work with 1 senior data scientist who was completely demotivated as all the others were fired. I hated the way things worked and I took it as my sole responsibility to build the data infrastructure and try to gain some relevant experience for myself. My goal was to build a simple infrastructure that resembles an end to end data engineering workflow. I started with figuring out all the data requirements, built API's to get data where its available, scrapers to get data when its not there. They were not ready to give me resources for any cloud solutions, hence they had a storage server and I used that to host my PostgresDB. For the fun of it I wanted learn Kubernetes and so I just setup a kind cluster there, used airflow as a data orchestrator and ran ETL pipelines. Soon the other data scientist can on board and was motivated to work along with me, we built some nice dashboards and provided useful insights. This is when we actually got some validation from management that our team even exists. All this was done on the side as I had to solve some NLP tasks like topic clustering, sentiment analysis and crunching some numbers and plotting visualisations. I can just feel it that this is nothing compared to what others would be working on, as I was a fresher and I built all this with what I learnt and reading Joe Reis's book. Current stack: FastAPI, Airflow, pandas, looker studio, Tableau, k8s, Little bit of CI/CD, Redis, Postgres, Docker. I feel like after this there is nothing much to build up on. What can I do to gain more experience to land a better job or better myself as I feel like i'm plateauing right now. I see all this talk about Pyspark, RabbitMQ, Hive, snowlake, databricks etc., and I do not know what to do about it.
Any help or guidance would be great. Cheers!!

Personal: I run XC. I make music, guitar and piano mainly, but lately a lot of musescore and audacity. I have an absolutely terrible I like learning languages. I’ve been learning chinese (B2) for 7 years, Japanese (C1) for almost 6, Korean (B1) for 5, French (B1) for 3, heritage speaker of 2 Indian languages, and with my CARS score I’m not sure if I can claim English lmao. I’ve tutored at a non-profit the basics in Japanese, Chinese, and Korean for 150 Hrs, wrote a self-published book about constructed languages, was invited to present the book at an international conference, and recently passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test so I can “officially” speak Japanese 😎. Languages and different cultures are a very big part of my life.
School List: Notes: I would like to stay in Massachusetts, but if I have to pull a slipping Jimmy and enroll at the University of American Samoa, so be it. Tear my list to shreds. I really want to match into a surgical specialty, so only US MD.

OOS: Dartmouth Vermont Brown Quinnipac UConn Yale Cornell Columbia NYMC Mount Sinai Stony Brook Einstein Hackensack Drexel Penn State JHU Sidney Kimmel TJU Georgetown George Washington U UVA Duke UNC Chapel Hill Vtech Wake Forest Stanford UCSF UCLA UWA Kaiser U of Hawaii (apparently Japanese is a thing in Hawaii)

2024.05.16 11:03 Much-Leg-1834 Can I possibly get a referral from an mbta employee?

Can I possibly get a referral from an mbta employee?
I recently applied for the Data Analyst Co-op gig at MBTA and I am extremely interested in this opportunity . As an international grad student diving deep into Data Science and Analytics at a decent public uni, I reckon I bring some fresh perspectives to the table.
Attached are a couple of PowerBI dashboards I whipped up. They're a taste of what I can do with data – hope you dig 'em!
If there's any chance of scoring a referral from someone on the inside, that'd be huge. I'm all in on this opportunity and would love to be part of the MBTA crew.
