2024.05.21 21:49 pilotslashCPA Write-Up: Zero to CFII in 13 months, Part 61, $52K

Hi all! After a crazy, but incredibly fun and rewarding year earning my pilot certs, I wanted to make a write-up of my experience in hopes that it’ll be helpful for any other aspiring or current pilots. To summarize, I went from zero aviation experience to CFII in 13 months, Part 61, paying as I go and on the pretty cheap side. I do want to emphasize that I was ~incredibly~ lucky and had some very generous people who helped me out, and I could not have done this as efficiently and cheaply if it weren’t for them. I’m going to list all my takeaways below, but I think my biggest piece of advice is to network as much as you can because there are some amazing, generous people in this community that want to see us all succeed.
Background:
For context, I’m in my mid to late twenties and have been in the workforce for about 5 years. Through a combination of factors I decided to make a career switch to professional pilot but was hesitant because I did not want to take on debt. I have a family member who is an airline pilot who helped me devise a plan. I moved home and kept working my job remotely so I was able to put all my paychecks towards flying.
Private Pilot – 3 months, 75 hours TT, $12k
I did my private in a Piper Archer owned by my local FBO. The owner allowed my family member to be my instructor and gave me a small discount for pre-paying hours. We flew almost daily. I also took ground school at another local FBO in-person, and that was much more helpful than having to learn everything on my own because I was brand new to aviation. I took the private written exam as soon as my ground school concluded which was also the week of my checkride (bad idea in hindsight, but it worked out).
I solo’d around 25 hours and took my checkride with about 60 hours in the Archer (15 additional hours were in a friend’s airplane). The checkride was challenging, but straightforward and I was well prepared. The DPE said good things about me afterward and I was officially a private pilot! I’d be happy to answer questions or do a writeup in a separate post on any of my checkrides but for the sake of brevity I’ll skip that for now.
~Key takeaways from private:~
Fly as often as possible and make sure your instructor is aligned with that. Also stay on top of ground school. Also, don’t rush to take the checkride before you’re ready, it’s okay to have a lot of practice first. Lastly, I know DPE availability is a big issue in lots of areas and can cause people to have to wait on a checkride even though they’ve been ready for months. In my experience, if you try hard enough and call around, you will find someone. However, it might mean you have to travel a little bit which I know is not possible for everyone.
Instrument – 2 months, 150 hours TT, $14k
I was feeling a little fatigued after private so I was slow to start studying for instrument. I started by doing a lot of flying for fun, mainly flying in the Archer by myself on little cross countries to check off some of the requirements (in hindsight I should have found someone to split time with).
I did my instrument at a flight school in one of the adjacent states. This particular school specializes in accelerated programs, but they do not have a formalized instrument course. I went in-person and spoke with the director of flight operations to discuss my options. Since I had to take PTO to do this, the goal was to finish my instrument in one week with the checkride at the end. I paid a flat rate for the airplane and instructor time. I also stayed over there during that week so I had to pay for housing as well.
Before I went over there, I did some prep in the Archer that I did my private in and took the written exam (Sheppard air). I also purchased Sporty’s Instrument course and used that to prep and for the endorsement needed to take the written. The week I spent at the flight school was honestly a blast, and I was able to take my checkride on day 7 with 20 hours in the plane and about 4 hours of sim time. Again, happy to discuss the checkride in the comments or another post.
~Key takeaways from instrument:~
TAKE THE IRA, FII, AND IGI EXAMS AT THE SAME TIME. You only have to purchase the IRA Sheppard course and can take all 3 exams back to back. Also, again stay on top of ground school because instrument flying requires a lot of technical knowledge. But it honestly is really fun!
Commercial – 3 months, 263 hours TT, $8k
The biggest challenge for commercial was time building, of course. This is where networking saved me. I made friends with another instructor who frequented my local FBO who also owns a plane. He needed the time as well so we flew together a lot and I paid for the fuel. I also had another friend at the airport who owns a plane that he doesn’t fly often and offered to let me time build in that (again, I’ve been so lucky to come across some very generous people).
I did my checkride in the Archer that I learned in with my family member signing me off, and with the same DPE who did my private. Commercial was probably the easiest one I had done so far, but it still was no joke! I will say I was amazed with how much easier things came to me by this point versus when I first started, which was a great feeling.
~Key takeaways from commercial:~
Network, network, network. Spend as much time as you can at your local FBO or flight school and make friends with everyone. Like I’ve said, there are some very generous people out there who love to help out new pilots, and I could not have made it this far without them.
Also, in retrospect, it would have been a really good idea to have done commercial from the right seat. I’ve heard of a lot of people doing that and if I had, I would have been able to knock out CFI a lot sooner and cheaper.
Multi-engine add-on – 1 week, 298 hours TT, $4.3k
Shortly after getting my CPL, I had a week of PTO and decided to knock out my multi add-on. I found a flight school with a Seminole and got ahold of their MEI, and we figured we could knock it out during that week. I contacted the DPE who did my private and commercial and we scheduled my checkride for the end of the week. This flight school was about 2 hours driving from home, and I was able to stay with friends while I was there.
This one was a little challenging because this was in January in the midwest and we were seeing a lot of low IFR days. We ended up getting weathered out the first half of the week, but luckily the Seminole was an easy transition for me and we got me trained up in 3 days, 8 hours of flying. I took the checkride as scheduled and passed (I will say I have had extremely good luck with weather for all of my checkride days so far).
Sidenote: Prior to this checkride, I also took the AGI and IGI exams and asked the DPE who did my multi checkride to sign off on the ground instructor certificate at the same time. I did this because I’ve heard it helps when applying to CFI jobs (shows a little extra effort) and it was easier to do it this way versus having a FSDO issue the cert. Cost me $50 to the DPE.
~Key takeaways from multi:~
Do your research to find an airplane at a good rate. I paid $395 per hour which included the instructor, but I’ve seen some schools charging a lot more. Also, I looked into schools with accelerated courses that you pay as a package, and based on my experience I would not recommend because I was able to do it much cheaper my way.
My instructor did a good job of making sure I knew all the aircraft systems well enough to teach them in case I go for my MEI (which I would like to do soon). Since the MEL is light on material, I highly recommend this. Also, when I was doing research I was told to look for a Seminole or DA-42 because they’re easy trainers, which I would agree with based on my limited experience.
CFI – 1 month (on top of all my experience thus far), 316 hours TT, $5k
This was the scariest one for me. I had heard all along that CFI is the hardest and longest checkride and for the most part I would agree. I originally was planning on going to a school with an accelerated program for this, but after asking around I decided to do it on my own (with my family member signing me off).
This one was heavy on ground school. I got some lesson plans from various people as I heard that’s what everyone has prepared for the checkride, but I hardly ended up using them. I also had a friend send me PowerPoints he made for the technical subject areas. I edited them/made them my own and these are what I ended up using for the checkride along with a couple props.
As far as studying goes, the thing I found most helpful was watching random YouTube videos before bed every night. Although it was all review, I picked up a lot of tidbits that weren’t quite drilled into my brain as I still feel new to aviation overall. As the DPE described it, to be a good CFI you basically need to be a nerd about everything aviation and that’s what I tried to do. I would guess that I studied a few hours a day for a month and a half or so. As for the flying part, I had a little bit of right seat experience prior to buckling down for CFI (probably under 5 hours), so I’d guess it took me about 5 more hours to feel comfortable in the right seat. I took the checkride with the same DPE who did my private, commercial, and multi and passed! The checkride was 8 hours total so definitely a long day. As we were debriefing, I went ahead and scheduled CFII with him as well.
~Key takeaways from CFI:~
Start nerding out now (if you aren’t already). Keep a running collection of links and videos that explain concepts well or teach you something interesting, they will be useful for the checkride. Also, don’t buy lesson plans. As my DPE put it, there are really only like 5 lesson plans for any given topic and we all steal them from each other, so no need to reinvent the wheel or pay for them if someone else can give them to you. I’d also recommend really getting to know the PTS, because it lays out very clearly what you are required to do on the checkride (for example you know you’re going to need to teach runway incursions so it’s a good opportunity to be really prepared). I’m sure my last point is most applicable to those doing CFI on their own since you won’t have a school telling you exactly what to expect.
CFII – 1 month, 368 hours TT, $1.3k
CFII was possibly the easiest checkride to prepare for. I did this one in a friend’s airplane – a Mooney with a G750 and GFC 500 autopilot. It probably took about 10 hours of flying (I already have lots of time in this plane) to be ready. For studying, I reviewed Pilot Cafe, YouTube videos, and obtained some lesson plans from a friend. I did not use PowerPoints or anything for this one. I also had already completed the written exam back when I did my instrument rating. I’m not sure what else to say about this one, but I did it with the same DPE again and passed. It feels amazing to be done with checkrides for a while!
~Key takeaways from CFII:~
Select an airplane with a good autopilot. This made the flying portion of the checkride super easy. For the oral, I highly recommend working with instructors who send students for a lot of instrument checkrides. I feel like there are so many very specific questions that DPEs like to ask on instrument/CFII checkrides, so it helps if you have someone who knows what those questions are going to be. Also, FlightInsight on YouTube and Boldmethod were my favorite resources for this one. Lastly, make sure you know your avionics and autopilot really well, including reading and being able to teach all of the limitations that are in the user manuals.
Notes regarding cost:
I did a decent job of tracking all my expenses throughout this process. I noted in the title that the total cost to me was about $50k, which consists of the ~$45k that I discussed above plus some additional expenses. I also did my commercial ASES rating at Jack Brown’s seaplane base which cost me about $2.5K total (of course this was just for fun). The remaining amount consists of things like buying a headset, books, random accessories, and even some things I called “unnecessary expenses”. I temporarily paid for a membership at a flight school that I barely ended up using, so I put that in that category. While I did everything pretty cheap, I was definitely not perfect!
Here is a further breakdown of my expenses:
Airplane rentals/fuel - $36.9k
Instructor fees - $2.5k (bear in mind I got a lot of free instruction from friends & family)
Ground school - $1.3k (includes actual ground school and books)
Flight accessories - $1.2k
Written exam fees - $1.2k (8 exams total)
DPE fees - $5.8k (7 checkrides; this includes seaplane)
Medical fees - $290
Housing - $900
Misc/unnecessary expenses - $1.2k
Total: $51.7k
Overall Takeaways:
- For those doing Part 61/pay as you go, I highly recommend finding an independent instructor with a flexible schedule. This was key for me because I had a work schedule to work around.
- NETWORKING/MAKING FRIENDS. Go to every fly-in you can, always stop into the FBO to say hi to people, etc. etc. Having friends in aviation was monumentally helpful for me and saved me SO much money. Cannot stress this enough!
- If you are on a timeline, make sure you set specific milestones and when you are going to hit them. Make sure your instructor is on board too.
- Do your research! Reddit has been a fantastic resource for me throughout this process. Talk to people who have achieved the things you want to achieve. I really cannot thank you all enough for all your help and insights on your experiences!
Again, I am more than happy to answer any and all questions. I also apologize if anything is jumbled or confusing; this took a long time to write and I’m sure I missed things. I will also disclaim that while I did a good job of tracking all my expenses, I was not perfect and YMMV for sure. I just hope this gave a somewhat helpful picture for those hoping to do something similar to what I did.
As for next steps, I am aiming for the airlines one of these days! I have a couple interviews at flight schools coming up so I am planning to quit my job and finally start flying full-time soon. I want to do my MEI sometime soon as well but I haven’t figured out how I’m going to pay for the PIC time yet.
I also want to say that I absolutely love general aviation and hope to always be involved in it. I have made so many friends, had some incredible experiences, and learned way more than I could have ever imagined in the past year. For anyone thinking about flying, hopefully this is your sign to just do it! Feel free to comment with questions!

2024.05.21 21:48 Straight_Egg9826 Nickel Plating Advice

Hi All-
Background in chemistry, trying to get into electroplating carbon steel parts. Here is what I am trying to do.
Parts previously subjected to nickel plating are stripped in 68% nitric acid overnight at room temperature, then washed with water.
Parts are mechanically cleaned of rust, polished if necessary, then the polish is hydrolyzed in a boiling 10M solution of Potassium Hydroxide.
Parts are then washed in water again then pickled in fuming Hydrochloric Acid until surface finish and metal coloration are uniform.
Nickel Plating is done using a 50 mL Watts Bath made from 12 grams Nickel (II) Sulfate, 1.5 grams Nickel (II) Chloride, and 1.5 grams Boric Acid, plus additional Boric Acid titrated to pH 4.5 prior to each run of electroplating. 3-5 milligrams 2-butyn-1,4-diol is used as a brightening agent and added from a standardized solution calibrated to 1 mg/mL.
My questions:
  1. Is concentrated nitric acid an appropriate choice for nickel stripping? I keep it in a sealed bottle to prevent it from picking up moisture from the atmosphere. I think the passivation layer that forms from nitric acid on steel must be removed prior to a successful plate, so I pickle it off in hydrochloric acid.
  2. I have heard that brightener must be replenished over time. In the case of 2-butyn-1,4-diol, how do I know when to replace? By what chemical mechanism is it consumed i.e. what byproducts would I look for? Is adding too much brightener going to hurt my plating bath?
  3. Is celite (diatomaceous earth) a reasonable choice for filtering solids and contaminants out of my plating bath, or will this introduce soluble impurities?
Thanks all for the help

2024.05.21 21:45 Raaniz_Kaan 3 month checkup

Yesterday was my first 3 months on 2mg daily sublingual estradiol and my 1st checkup to do bloodwork. After doing the bloodwork (easypeasy), I discussed some of my changes and asked some questions and talked about my next steps.
Crying and low libido were the first immediate changes in the 1st week. By the end of the 1st monthn my breasts have started to hurt and (if I have measured myself correctly both before and after) have noticed some size growths and reductions (especially in height by some cm). Skin might have then started to soften, but this is hard to tell because my body hair grows so fast and still makes my skin feel rough. Shortly before the end of the second month, my boobs started to grow to noticeable peaks, which may mean, according societal norms, I would no longer be appropriately allowed to expose my bare chest to the public. About 2 and a half months in, I noticed after shaving that some parts have started to grow in slower, thinner, and blonder (especially the face). My mom has also said around this time that (though other factors have likely more to do with this) my hair has grown fuller. I could tell there also was a bit more hair around my receding hairline. During this time, however, I have been lazier about shaving and dressing femme despute being out to a lot of people (shaving and skincare is rough). Of course, I am still scheduling to get electrolysis and laser hair removal starting in July.
My nurse I went to at Planned Parenthood even said she could tell I looked different since the last time. Some tips she gave me were how to better time taking the pills and that it is perfectly safe to swallow the sublingual pills without dissolving in the mouth or cheek. She also said I'll get the results in a few days and she'll talk about upping the dose and more then via phone call. She seemed pretty confident my levels are okay.
About 20 minutes ago, I got a copy of my lab results. My testosterone levels are 344 ng/dL and my estrogen levels are 384 pg/mL.

2024.05.21 21:45 qendy Passed! AT/AT/AT (4 week timeline) - May 18

I passed! AT/AT/AT. Took the test this past Saturday May 18, at a test center. Thank you to everyone on this sub, reading through your tips and experiences made all the difference.
Context: Start to finish, I completed this journey in about 4 weeks. I was laid off in March of this year and am job hunting. So, having the time, I opted to do it on a very aggressive timeline, to knock it out and beef up my resume. Not having it on the resume felt like a blocker for the positions I’ve been applying to, time will tell if it helps. I do wish I had thought to do it while still employed, so I could have done it on their dime. (I could not have pulled this off this quickly while working full time.)
Budget (USD) $723

2024.05.21 21:42 HotEntranceTrain Get Started with AI and Big Data in Trading

Choosing a data source Before diving into AI and big data, choose a reliable and free data source to get historical stock market data. One popular option is Alpha Vantage (https://www.alphavantage.co/). Sign up for a free API key and access a wealth of stock data.
Example: Fetching stock data from Alpha Vantage in Python:

import requests api_key = 'your_alpha_vantage_api_key' symbol = 'MSFT' function = 'TIME_SERIES_DAILY' url = f'https://www.alphavantage.co/query?function={function}&symbol={symbol}&apikey={api_key}&datatype=json' response = requests.get(url) data = response.json() print(data)
Data preprocessing Clean and preprocess the data to remove any inconsistencies or missing values, and convert it into a format that can be easily used by machine learning models.
Example: Converting stock data to a pandas DataFrame:
import pandas as pd stock_data = data['Time Series (Daily)'] df = pd.DataFrame(stock_data).T df.head()
Feature engineering Create meaningful features from the raw data that can help your AI model better understand the stock market's patterns and trends.
Example: Creating moving average and relative strength index (RSI) features:
import numpy as np def moving_average(data, window): return data.rolling(window=window).mean() def relative_strength_index(data, window): delta = data.diff().dropna() gain = delta.where(delta > 0, 0) loss = -delta.where(delta < 0, 0) avg_gain = moving_average(gain, window) avg_loss = moving_average(loss, window) rs = avg_gain / avg_loss rsi = 100 - (100 / (1 + rs)) return rsi df['Close'] = df['4. close'].astype(float) df['MA_20'] = moving_average(df['Close'], 20) df['RSI_14'] = relative_strength_index(df['Close'], 14)
Building an AI model Choose a simple machine learning model to start with, such as a linear regression or decision tree. As you gain more experience, explore more advanced models like LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) networks.
Example: Training a linear regression model with scikit-learn:
from sklearn.linear_model import LinearRegression from sklearn.model_selection import train_test_split # Prepare the data features = ['MA_20', 'RSI_14'] target = 'Close' df = df.dropna() X = df[features] y = df[target] # Split the data into train and test sets X_train, X_test, y_train, y_test = train_test_split(X, y, test_size=0.2, random_state=42) # Train the model model = LinearRegression() model.fit(X_train, y_train)
Evaluating and improving the model Evaluate your model's performance using appropriate metrics, such as Mean Absolute Error (MAE) or Mean Squared Error (MSE). Fine-tune your model by tweaking hyperparameters or trying different algorithms.
Example: Evaluating the model's performance:
from sklearn.metrics import mean_absolute_error # Make predictions y_pred = model.predict(X_test) #Calculate the Mean Absolute Error mae = mean_absolute_error(y_test, y_pred) print(f'Mean Absolute Error: {mae}')
Implementing a trading strategy
Once you have a reliable model, develop a trading strategy based on the predictions. For example, if the model predicts a stock price increase, you can consider buying, and if it predicts a decrease, you can consider selling.
Example:
Simple trading strategy using AI model predictions:
def simple_trading_strategy(y_true, y_pred, buy_threshold, sell_threshold): actions = [] for i in range(len(y_true)): if y_pred[i] - y_true[i] > buy_threshold: actions.append('Buy') elif y_true[i] - y_pred[i] > sell_threshold: actions.append('Sell') else: actions.append('Hold') return actions actions = simple_trading_strategy(y_test, y_pred, buy_threshold=1, sell_threshold=1) print(actions)
Backtesting: Backtesting is essential to understand how your strategy would have performed in the past. It helps you fine-tune your strategy and gain confidence in its ability to perform in real-world conditions.
Example: Backtesting the simple trading strategy:

def backtest_trading_strategy(y_true, actions): profit = 0 num_stocks = 0 entry_price = 0 for i in range(len(y_true)): if actions[i] == 'Buy' and num_stocks == 0: num_stocks = 1 entry_price = y_true[i] elif actions[i] == 'Sell' and num_stocks > 0: profit += y_true[i] - entry_price num_stocks = 0 return profit profit = backtest_trading_strategy(y_test.values, actions) print(f'Profit from the strategy: {profit}')
Getting started with AI and big data in trading can be simple and exciting with the right tools and techniques. Follow these steps to build a basic AI-powered trading strategy, and as you gain more experience, experiment with different algorithms and trading strategies to optimize your performance.

2024.05.21 21:41 Faithhal Decoding SARMS: Unveiling the Top Picks for Fitness Enthusiasts

Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMS) have emerged as a game-changer in the realm of fitness and bodybuilding, offering a safer alternative to traditional anabolic steroids. With a myriad of SARMS flooding the market, each boasting unique benefits and mechanisms, it can be challenging to navigate through the plethora of options to find the most effective ones. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve into some of the best SARMS available, providing insights into their functions, advantages, and considerations for usage.
  1. MK-677 (Ibutamoren): While not technically a SARM, MK-677 is often grouped with SARMS due to its similar effects. This compound is a potent growth hormone secretagogue, stimulating the production of growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). MK-677 is prized for its ability to enhance muscle growth, promote fat loss, and improve sleep quality and recovery. It's particularly popular among individuals looking to pack on size and strength without resorting to traditional anabolic steroids.
  2. SR9009 (Stenabolic): Another non-SARM compound, SR9009 operates as a Rev-Erb agonist, influencing the body's circadian rhythm and metabolism. It has gained attention for its potential to boost endurance, enhance fat loss, and improve cardiovascular health. SR9009 users often report increased energy levels, faster recovery times, and greater overall stamina, making it a valuable addition to cutting or endurance-focused cycles.
  3. YK-11: Despite its classification as a SARM, YK-11 exhibits characteristics of both SARMS and traditional steroids. It functions as a myostatin inhibitor, allowing for unprecedented muscle growth beyond the limitations imposed by the body's natural regulatory mechanisms. YK-11 users often experience rapid gains in muscle mass, strength, and power, making it a sought-after option for bulking cycles.
  4. LGD-3303: Although less well-known than its counterparts, LGD-3303 has been gaining traction for its promising muscle-building properties. It operates similarly to Ligandrol (LGD-4033) but with potentially fewer androgenic side effects. LGD-3303 users typically report significant gains in lean muscle mass, enhanced strength, and improved recovery, making it an appealing option for both bulking and recomposition phases.
  5. S-23: Known for its potent anabolic effects, S-23 is revered for its ability to promote muscle growth and increase bone density. It operates by binding to androgen receptors in the muscles and bones, leading to enhanced protein synthesis and muscle hypertrophy. S-23 users often experience rapid gains in strength and muscle mass, along with improvements in endurance and overall athletic performance.
For more>> What are the best sarms
It's important to note that while SARMS offer exciting potential benefits for physique enhancement and performance, they also come with potential risks and side effects. These may include suppression of natural testosterone production, lipid imbalances, and liver toxicity, among others. Therefore, it's crucial to approach SARMS use with caution, conduct thorough research, and consider consulting with a knowledgeable healthcare professional or experienced coach before embarking on a SARMS regimen.
In conclusion, the selection of SARMS ultimately depends on individual goals, preferences, and tolerance levels. Whether you're aiming to bulk up, lean out, or improve athletic performance, there's likely a SARMS regimen that can help you achieve your objectives. By staying informed, exercising prudence, and prioritizing safety, you can unlock the potential benefits of SARMS while minimizing the associated risks, paving the way for a successful and rewarding fitness journey.

2024.05.21 21:36 HappiestGuyAlive Question About Stock from 1998

My grandmother bought me 1 share of BRK Class B stock back in May 12, 1998. In my EQ investor center, it says I still own 1 share. However, evidently there was a 50-1 stock split back in 2010 and I have to fill out a form to shareholder services "claiming" this conversion. So if the current share price is $400, does that now mean I need to multiply it by 50 to get the total amount? Did I calculate this correctly?
I'm asking because I'm trying to convert it to my Fidelity account, but they are trying to make me pay a 1,000 indemnity fee to replace a lost physical stock certificate since my custodian at the time lost the certificate.
TLDR; Does 1 share of BERK CLASS B stock on May 12, 1998 equal roughly $20,000 today? Thank you.

2024.05.21 21:34 aburksart Which X-Man has appeared on the most covers?

I’m going to go out on a limb and assume the answer is Wolverine but you never know! I’ve been watching reviews of classic X-Men comic books and Storm is on practically every other cover, so maybe Logan’s got some competition. In addition to that Cyclops has a few years on the ol’ Canuck in publication time. Anyway I’m curious to see if anyone has counted the X-Man to appear on the most covers of an X-Men comic book, be it Uncanny or X Factor, basically anything that’s not a solo run or limited series.
Do you want to know what actually prompted this question? The UK soap opera EastEnders has a wiki that tracks the number of times a character has been “doof doof-ed”, ie the cliffhanger drum beats that lead you into the end credits of an episode. You can gauge a character’s popularity and longevity by the number of doof doofs they have.
*I did attempt to Google this before posting this question and came up empty. I just know one of us dorks has calculated this!

2024.05.21 21:33 Ausooj Critical Examination of the "Bedouins Tall Building" Prophecy

Hello once again :D
This is just a topic that has been sometime now in my mind to asses. So here is refutation of this claimed prophecy, and i might not take the "traditional" aproach to it. But i still try to show how ambigous and general the claimed prophecy is.
CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF THE “BEDOUINS TALL BUILDING” PROPHECY
Introduction:
The prophecy attributed to the Prophet Muhammad concerning the construction of towering edifices often interpreted with a focus on contemporary urbanization trends, particularly in the Arabian Peninsula. This critical examination delves into the historical context, socio-economic analysis, and academic perspectives to highlight several weaknesses and inconsistencies in interpreting this as an legit prophecy.
Historical Context and Interpretation:
The hadith frequently cited in this context is found in Sahih Muslim, where it is reported that the Prophet Muhammad said: "You shall see the barefoot, naked, destitute herdsmen competing in constructing tall buildings" [1]. Scholars and believers have linked this prophecy to the rapid urbanization and economic growth of traditionally nomadic societies, like those in the Arabian Peninsula, citing cities such as Dubai and Riyadh with their iconic skyscrapers.
However, it is crucial to understand the context of this hadith. The reference to "barefoot, naked, destitute herdsmen" indicates a dramatic socio-economic transformation rather than merely an architectural trend. Historically, the Arabian Peninsula has experienced numerous cycles of wealth and poverty. The Nabateans, for example, built monumental structures like Petra long before the advent of Islam [2] . Thus, the construction of tall buildings can be seen as part of a broader historical pattern rather than a unique or unprecedented event.
Ambiguity and Vagueness:
One significant issue with using the prophecy of tall buildings is its inherent ambiguity. Tall buildings, defined by their vertical prominence, have existed throughout history. The ancient Egyptians constructed the Pyramids, the Romans built towering structures like the Colosseum, and medieval Europe saw the rise of cathedrals with soaring spires. Each of these could have been interpreted as "tall buildings" in their respective eras.
Moreover, the phrase "competing in constructing tall buildings" is subjective and lacks specificity. While modern skyscrapers indeed represent a competition for height, the human ambition to build higher has been a constant for millennia, driven by technological advancements and urban planning needs rather than a divine signal. Historian Lynn White, Jr. noted that the drive to construct monumental buildings is a universal phenomenon found across various civilizations throughout history [3]. This suggests that the desire to build tall structures is an inherent aspect of human societies rather than a prophetic fulfillment.
Technological and Economic Factors:
The development of tall buildings in contemporary times is primarily driven by technological progress and economic factors. Advances in engineering and materials science have made constructing skyscrapers feasible and cost-effective. Urbanization, population growth, and limited land availability in cities necessitate building upwards to maximize space. These factors are rooted in practical human needs and capabilities, not necessarily in fulfilling a prophecy.
Additionally, globalization has led to significant investments in urban infrastructure worldwide. Cities strive to build iconic structures as symbols of economic power and modernity. This global trend is motivated by economic competition and urban development strategies rather than prophetic fulfillment. Economist Edward Glaeser argues that skyscrapers are a natural result of economic incentives and the need for efficient land use in urban centers [4] .
Prophecy and Self-Fulfilling Nature:
Another critical aspect to consider is the self-fulfilling nature of prophecies. When a prophecy is widely known, it can influence people's actions and decisions. In the case of the tall buildings prophecy, awareness of the hadith could subconsciously or consciously motivate individuals in the Muslim world to engage in constructing tall buildings as a means of economic and social progress. This creates a circular logic where the prophecy appears to be fulfilled simply because people are aware of it and act accordingly.
Theological and Scholarly Perspectives:
Islamic scholars have varied interpretations of prophecies, often emphasizing metaphorical or moral lessons over literal predictions. Prominent Islamic scholar Ibn Khaldun, in his seminal work "Muqaddimah," stressed the importance of understanding the socio-political context of prophetic traditions and cautioned against overly literal interpretations [5]. His insights suggest that such prophecies should be viewed within the broader tapestry of human history and development. Certainly, here is an expanded discussion on the perspectives of scholars regarding the tall buildings prophecy, incorporating various theological and scholarly viewpoints.
Also modern Islamic scholars continue to debate the significance of the tall buildings prophecy. For instance, Dr. Yasir Qadhi, a prominent Islamic scholar, has discussed the prophecy in his lectures, highlighting that it is part of a larger set of signs meant to convey moral and ethical lessons rather than precise future events. He emphasizes that these prophecies should inspire Muslims to reflect on their spiritual state and societal responsibilities rather than to fixate on specific architectural developments [7].
Sociological Implications:
The sociological implications of prophecies, particularly those related to urban development, are profound. The construction of tall buildings in the modern era is closely tied to national pride, economic development, and globalization. Sociologist Saskia Sassen, in her research on global cities, points out that skyscrapers often serve as symbols of a city's status and economic power [6] . This perspective underscores the idea that the proliferation of tall buildings is more about human ambition and progress than fulfilling a divine prophecy.
Additionally, emphasizing tall buildings as a prophecy can have socio-political ramifications. It may influence policy decisions and urban planning in Muslim-majority countries, potentially diverting resources from more pressing social and economic issues. This focus on eschatological signs can also affect public sentiment and behavior, leading to fatalism or a sense of inevitability about the future, which can hinder proactive efforts to address contemporary challenges.
Conclusion:
When scrutinized critically and through an academic lens, the tall building's prophecy reveals significant ambiguities and lacks a concrete basis for being considered a legitimate prophecy.
Historical context, the subjective nature of what constitutes a "tall building," and the technological and economic motivations behind skyscraper construction undermine its reliability as a legit and non-self fulfilling prophecy. Instead, the proliferation of tall buildings should be viewed through the lens of human progress, technological advancements, and urban development, rather than as a prophetic prediction that lacks objective basing.
By examining the prophecy through historical, sociological, and theological perspectives, it becomes clear that the construction of tall buildings is a complex phenomenon influenced by numerous factors beyond the scope of a singular prophetic tradition.

2024.05.21 21:33 FlahlesJr Sailing interactions apart from island reward space

I see a lot of people having disdain with sailing. I'm assuming they are envisioning very little interaction with anything and that the skill is passing simply due to rewards spaces offered by it like the new islands. I don't see it like that, so I figured I'd share what I'm envisioning down the line.
  1. Ship building
    1. Obviously this would be similar to construction in a way and offer pretty low exp rates for sailing and contruction. You could do the build, remove, build, remove you do with contruction currently. This would hopefully not be a primary method of leveling sailing or construction without being insanely expensive like doing it with bagged plants.
  2. Ship maintenance
    1. While performing any activity at sea, you actively have to maintain the health of your ship which gives you exp drops when done. I imagine this being a passive exp gain while doing at sea activities.
  3. Bounties
    1. There are multiple groups of pirates at sea and you go and get a bounty. You then have to seek out the correct group of pirates. Fight them and collect any riches that might be on their ship and a gp reward for you bounty. This would obviously offer combat and sailing exp.
  4. Deliveries
    1. I imagine you're given a good and a location to bring it to and the locations can be quite tricky to traverse simply due to the terrain or weather or maybe you are sneaking them in like a drug mule.
  5. Races
    1. Pretty self explanatory. Similar to agility laps, but may offer small rewards apart from exp upon race completion. Something like tokens to buy ship parts or design. Similar to marks of grace. Could make each race slightly different with varying weather conditions or rock layouts to keep it engaging.
  6. At sea npcs
    1. Sirens - A monster with a slayer assignment that can only be assigned when sailing and slayer level reach a certain amount. Requires ear muffs or slayer helm. Offers whatever reward jagex feels the need for
    2. Muldjewangk - More at sea monsters that could just be roaming around
    3. Mermaids - could be interactable at sea npcs that you can chat with.
    4. Pirates - duh
    5. Nguruvilu - b/c they look just so darn cool.
    6. Ahuizotl - possibly another slayer monster
    7. Fish cows - Gotta have cows everywhere. These ones drop sinew directly, so you don't have to make it at a range with meat. We could basically put anything we want at sea
  7. At sea resources
    1. Trees at sea
      1. Trees akin to redwoods that grow in the ocean. You could maybe harvest fruits from them granting farming exp.
      2. Floating trees. These are trees that passively float around the ocean. Their top half looks like a tree and bottom half, the roots end up being like tendrils of a jelly fish. You can chop these trees down
    2. Scraping the sea floors for mining resources and maybe seaweed and other resources
    3. Deep sea fishing - I envision these as more engaging active fishing methods. Not just click and let fish.
      1. Fishing with a rod where you have to actually actively fish and attempt to reel it in. Changing ship direction to make sure the tension doesn't get too high. Using baits to lure it certain ways.
      2. Net fishing and similar to tempoross where some spots will glow or be different meaning you can go to them for like 50% bonus fish on pull. You have to time the pull of the net when maximum amount of fish are in or something.
  8. Monster Hunting
    1. You track down the monster with hunter skill through ship wrecks, rocks, strange currents, etc to fight a monster. Stuff like the Charybdis, king kraken, etc. These would be similar to bounties but tracking down a specific sea creature. Reward could be hunter, slayer, sailing exp with whatever drops the creatures may offer.
  9. Salvaging
    1. Come across ship wrecks that you can loot. Offering riches, thieving exp, and sailing exp. Could be timed so that the ship will fully sink and you lose half the loot if you don't get out in time.
Pool of serenity
  1. This is a special water source that is surrounded by mist and moves about like sulliusceps, but you have to navigate a circular maze to reach the center. You can fill up vials with this special water which offers small potion effects, like maybe an extra level to combat potions with a slight boost in herb exp if used. The maze is constantly changing and moving both interally and externally meaning navigating the maze is always different and that it's always moving geographical locations in the sea. You can tell it's near by the mist cloud. Possibly moving whenever it wants and just boots you out if it when it moves.
Charting out the seas
  1. You essentially map out the sea as you discover it. You can turn in maps for a bonus of exp. While you have a map in your position, clicking the world map will display the islands, but when you turn it in, you can no longer see them. You also get a discovery bonus for the first time discovering a new area.
Treasure maps
  1. Basically at sea clue scrolls.
Resources from the above activites would ideally intertwine with resources in the main gam like the fruit from a tree at sea being used to pay for protection of certain crops or maybe wood from the floating trees being used to upgrade a magic shortbow or being combine with redwood to make a new bow or crossbow. None of the above I mentioned are only tied to the reward space of islands. They could all actively be done at sea while either offering boosts of sailing exp or getting it passively while maintaining the ship while doing the activity.
You could make the activites more or less afk with sturdier and slower ship that you'd have to maintain the ship less, but miss out on the exp boosts. You could also hire crew members to help maintain the ship. This would hurt the profit margins of the at sea activity while allowing for higher exp rates while keeping the afk level lower still. For example, take a ship that is very fragile to do an activity, but hire the most expensive crew. They repair 90% of damage that the ship takes and the ship gets damaged more frequently. Every time they fix something they charge extra, along with a flat rate per tick. You'd be getting much faster exp rates while being mostly afk, but would be paying for it.

2024.05.21 21:33 Primary-Record2324 My Top 3 Favorite Otome Villainess Manga (Heretical Last Boss Queen, May I Ask For One Final Thing?, And An Observation Log of My Fiancee)

So, I'm not much of a Manhwa guy. I've read a couple, but that's very recently. So, almost all the Otome Isekai I have read have been in Manga form. So, these here are the top three I have had the pleasure of reading.

3: The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: From Villainess to Savior.

I love this one because she's not your typical ditzy Villainess or heroine that you see in an Otome Isekai. She's a very intelligent, calculating woman who's doing her best to do better while still fearing the possibility of her old personality surfacing. The flashbacks other characters have of the previous version of her in the game add to that and really gives you a sense that she's just afraid of herself more than anyone else. To the point where she still is a little unobservant of the way people think or feel about her. The manga recently had to get picked up by a different artist because the original one, Bunko Matsuura, has been in extremely poor health. This is the only one of the three that currently has an anime.

2: May I Ask For One Final Thing?

If you've read this one, I shouldn't have to explain myself. She likes punching fat, lazy nobels who do nothing but contaminate everyone's air. Not to mention, she's not an Isekai character at ALL. There IS someone in the story who is, but I will hold off on giving TOO many spoilers for those who were just curious about my post. The story and characters are all really fun and interesting and I can't wait for the next chapter. Also I'd love it if this became an anime.

1: An Observation Log of my Fiancee Who Calls Herself a Villainess/ An Observation Log of my Wife Who Calls Herself a Villainess.

I can't understate how much I love this series. I've read through it Thirteen times. THIRTEEN. Some of you probably saw my post that I made about it the other day when I was just thinking about what kind of voice actors they could possibly get for the anime. What makes this one so interesting is that not only is the Villainess character NOT trying to avoid death flags, she's trying to BRING THEM ON HERSELF. (And absolutely failing along the way). Its also told from the perspective of her fiancee, the Crown Prince. Your typical Emotionless, Super Talented Prince that needs the Heroine to bring the color of life to them. But much better fleshed out and just a really interesting character in his own right. The series is hilarious, heartfelt, and all the characters are memorable. The manga went on hiatus for a while because the artist had suffered a hand injury, but its all healed up and the chapters are pimping out on schedule again.
So yeah, that was my top three favorite Otome Villainess manga. Have you read them before? What are your favorites? Go ahead and comment below, I try to respond to all comments I get on posts I make.

2024.05.21 21:32 penguindance01 Dubai Need Advice on Selling and Buying a Property Simultaneously

Hi everyone,
I need some advice on selling my property and buying another one at the same time.
Here’s my situation:
The issue is the developer of the new property isn’t accepting a clause to make the payment after we receive the proceeds from our sale. The down payment for the new property with UAB Bank is required in 1.5 months, around July 13-15. We really want this new property and are unsure how to proceed. Would removing this clause cause any risk?
Also, when submitting a final offer letter with my bank to buy this property, I assume they will calculate the loan based on the fact that I still own the previous property, resulting in a lower loan amount. Is this correct?
Any advice or suggestions on how to handle this situation would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
UPDATE: I just remembered that Form F has 2 month duration, does that mean we could wait until July 20th or a bit more?

2024.05.21 21:30 DatCheeseBoi Arc shenanigans (looking for advice)

I have the 16GB A770 GPU. The Arc Control software seems generally broken (even after a full reinstall) having trouble looking for updates and constantly disclaiming that my resizeable bar is disabled despite it being enabled in BIOS.
Worse yet, my computer seems to suffer from a couple strange bugs:
1) Sometimes when I have a game on one screen and a discord call on another the discord share or an entire screen will just start blinking with green static garbage. This is oftentimes accompanied by the screens reloading like when you connect a new display making a short animation that doesn't let me use the machine for a second or two.
2) Sometimes the computer just goes dark, the screens declare no input, but it isn't off because audio keeps going.
3) Alternatively it just crashes on some games every now and then for no to me apparent reason.
The first issue is especially exacerbated by having a third monitor to the point where I will often times just need to disconnect one of my monitors while gaming. I didn't have these issues when I bought the GPU when they were still new and fresh, but I have bought it unfortunately unaware that the Arc cards miss some magic sauce to run VR and about a year ago I borrowed a 2070 from my friend to run my Index. He was using my card during that time and reported no outstanding issues. I've removed all the Nvidia stuff from my PC, and I've done my best to install the newest driver though that resulted in a total driver devastation and for a bit Windows defaulted to some low res basic driver until I managed to get an Arc driver through SDIO, I am on version 31.0.101.5379 and hasn't dared to update since (SDIO doesn't show any newer drivers and I don't really trust Intel's own stuff currently).
Do you have any similar experiences or tips to help me?

2024.05.21 21:30 SilasTheSavage CMV: If you think that kicking stray cats for fun is wrong, then you should think that buying factory farmed meat in the way most people do is wrong

This title is a bit long, but it is meant to pre-empt some of the nitpicky caveats I know people would come up with otherwise. I know that most people on Reddit (or at least on this sub) are vaguely moral subjectivists or error theorists (even though I don't think most have a worked out view, but more a vibe that morality at least isn't objective). This is the reason why I have phrased my title as a conditional in the way I have: IF you think x is wrong THEN you should think y is wrong. This avoids the inevitable "well, there is nothing really good or bad, it is all just people's preferences".
Secondly, I say buying factory farmed meat in the way most people do, because it avoids strange hyper-specific edge-cases like "what if I bought a package of meat right before closing, and asked the store manager whether they would order more meat if I bought this package", or something like that. When I say "in the way most people do", I mean going into a store, taking a package of factory farmed meat and buying it, no questions asked, or weird caveats added.
Now to the actual argument. First off, the conditions of factory farmed animals are very bad - far worse than being lives worth living. Consider chickens. Broiler chickens live in very crowded spaces (approx. 1 sqft. per chicken) and grow so fast that their limbs cannot keep up and they end up being in constant pain. They get chemical burns on their joints because they are living in their own shit which is high in ammonia. And they have their beaks removed so they don't peck each other because they're so stressed. Now ask yourself, if you had the choice at your deathbed to die and disappear, or to live a life as a factory farmed chicken and then die, which would you choose? I doubt many of you would choose living the life of the chicken. If so, then it isn't worth living in your judgement.
Furthermore, when you buy a package of meat you are causing animals to go through this suffering. You might object something like this: "When I buy a package of meat, it is highly unlikely that I will cause the shop to order more meat, causing factory farms to produce more meat. Thus, most of the time I am not causing more animals to suffer."
This argument doesn't work. Let's look at a simplified example: A shop orders chickens in stocks of 100. When they reach a certain limit in demand, they increase or decrease the amount of stocks they order, depending on whether demand has risen or fallen. You don't know how close they are to ordering a new stock, since you are buying meat like a regular person, and not asking how close they are. But you know that there is a 1/100 chance that your purchase will cause them to order a new stock. Furthermore, ordering a new stock involves ordering 100 more chickens. So on standard decision theory, the expected outcome of your buying a chicken is that one more chicken is ordered (100*1/100).
This is of course an idealized example, but it is how the meat industry works on average: A decrease in demand of x amount of meat packages will reduce the amount of meat packages produced by x on average, even if the industry isn't perfectly sensitive to demand.
So when you buy meat, the expected outcome of your action is that animals are harmed. The amount will be the total money value of the animal in question divided by the money value of the product you bought all multiplied by the amount of suffering of the animal. Likewise, when you kick a stray cat, you are causing it suffering.
Why are you causing these animals suffering?
In the case of the cat, it is for trivial pleasure. Likewise, in the case of meat, it is for pleasure. I think almost everyone who reads this would be able to stop eating meat at trivial cost to themselves. It might take a bit of getting used to, and you might have to order the slightly less tasty option, when going to a restaurant, but generally it would be of quite trivial cost.
The person going around kicking stray cats for fun could stop doing so at little cost to themselves too. They might have a little less fun in their life, but that is certainly outweighed by not kicking cats. We can even imagine that it is a big part of their life. They feel like it is a hobby, and they would have to spend a lot of effort to find a new thing to spend their time doing, and it would never be as fulfilling. Imagine you meet someone who is in the middle of beating a cat until it can barely walk, and you tell them to stop doing it. They then reply the above, that it would make them very sad, and be really inconvenient to them. Would you then answer "oh, of course then, carry on!"? Of course not.
It is not like it being for taste pleasure or nutritional convenience makes any difference either. Suppose it is discovered that the saliva of distressed cats is very tasty, and also high in c vitamin. You now come across the same person again, brutally beating a cat, and you stop them. They now say "oh, haven't you heard, distressed-cat saliva is very tasty and nutritional. And I can't be bothered to incorporate oranges into my diet, so I thought I might as well have some fun and beat this cat for its saliva". Would you now be okay with it?
But in the case where someone is beating a cat, they are hurting something which already exists. But the animals on factory farms wouldn't exist, if they weren't raised for meat. Okay, so imagine if instead of going out and beating cats on the street, the guy in question instead bred cats and kept them in small cages so he could beat them for fun, and perhaps even drink some of their tasty saliva. Is it okay now?
Perhaps the important thing is that you are not doing the killing yourself, but you are instead paying someone else to do it. So imagine instead that the person in question pays someone else to breed and beat cats, and to send videos of it to them so they can enjoy it, and perhaps even send some vials of distressed-cat saliva. Is it okay to pay a person to do that? No.
I doubt anyone actually thinks this, but someone might say "I don't care about factory farmed animal, but I do care about cats". This is why the example is kicking cats for fun. If you do it for fun, that means that you don't care about the cat - that is just stipulated into the example (or well not strictly, but it would be very strange to go around kicking cats for fun if you actually cared about them). You might think that that would mean that it is ok, since you by stipulation don't care, but then you reject the antecedent of my conditional, and so the argument isn't refuted. You might also think that someone cares about cats, and that makes it bad. But that is why I use stray cats - they don't have relationships with anyone. Perhaps someone cares about stray cats in general, without knowing about any particular stray cat. But people (including me) also care about animals in factory farms in general, without knowing about any particular animal.
Another objection one might raise is that crop production also kills animals - approx. 7.3 billion annually (which is less than a tenth of the amount killed in meat production, by the way). So vegans are equally killing animals for food! I will give you ten seconds to think about why this is a bad argument. (Hint: What do the animals killed for food eat?)
I think the actual reason why people are okay with buying factory farmed meat, but not kicking cats for fun is twofold: First off, we are much more used to buying meat than to beating cats. Secondly, it feels much less bad to buy meat than to beat a cat. But clearly neither of these are morally relevant differences. Something wrong doesn't become permissible when you are used to it. Likewise, it doesn't become permissible because it feels less bad.
I am sure there are many possible responses that I haven't adressed directly, but I want to encourage everyone to be a bit honest with themselves before they respond: Do I actually think that this is a plausible position, or am I only drawn to this because the alternative would be inconvenient for me? Would I also believe this principle if I applied it to other cases, or do I only find it plausible in the single example of factory farming?

2024.05.21 21:29 BigFurSeal Help Needed. Computer stuck at Win 10 spinning circle screen.

Hi Guys, thank you so much for reading this post; it's a bit long, as I tried not to omit any details. Below is a description for my case.
Computer Info:
Lenovo ThinkStation P520; C422 chipset; Xeon W-2195 CPU; 2*16GB 2666MHz registered ECC RAM; 1TB 970 Evo Plus; Graphic card 1: GTX 750Ti (as an graphic output interface); Graphic card 2: P102-100 (for graphic computing; both cards are working perfectly); Windows 10 Pro
Background:
The computer was working normally until I unnecessarily added a Gigabyte GC-Maple Ridge Thunderbolt 4 expansion card to it. The computer's user manual mentioned it was compatible with Thunderbolt 3 cards (didn't mention if it was Lenovo cards only), but didn't mention the compatibility with Thunderbolt 4 cards. So I wanted to take a chance.
I inserted the card into the 6th PCIe slot, and connected the headers on both the card and the motherboard by a USB cable and a Thunderbolt cable provided by Gigabyte. After installing the card, I turned on the Intel Thunderbolt option in BIOS.
Problem Description and Trials:
I’ve exhausted all my abilities and this issue is driving me crazy. Any hints are extremely appreciated!
I do know that I can buy a used motherboard for a few tens of bucks and get the machine running again; but I just don't want to give up on this problem...and it looks to me that it shouldn't be a hardware issue...
Thank you guys!

2024.05.21 21:22 Eatyourownass Help. Me. Please.

I recently started a powersports shop as a person solely to fix their inventory, it fluctuates between $1.9-2.1 million. I have only been through about 20 racks and have already had over 100k worth of adjustments doing cycle counts by racks(after ensuring same part numbers are consolidated.) I recently ran a No Bin report and sorted by items with an On-Hand qty >0 and it is 5435 items long. I wanted to take off special orders from that list of 5400-ish so ran a report for "SO's, parts received & not picked up, older than 6 months" and it is about 700 lines going back to 2021. At this point I am struggling to fix things with minimal impact to the day to day of the rest of the parts dept. On average every bin I touch is about 50-50 correct for part numbers physically being there, then once I get all the correct P/Ns in the bin digitally and digitally remove the ones not there I have to adjust numbers for 70% of the P/Ns. The shop has not done a full 100% inv in about 3 years and moved buildings in that time. My suggestion is to zero out the inv completely and do a wall-wall inv on a day the shop is closed, but the GM is skeptical and asking for alternative options. Any suggestions of another way to handle this, or how to stress how bad the state of this is? Bonus points if there’s a way for me to leverage this for better pay lol

2024.05.21 21:22 Erwinblackthorn OPC: City in the Clouds by JB Williams

Today’s one page challenge is for The City in the Clouds by J.B. Williams. Finally, a requested challenge, rather than the usual cycle of me finding a story and the person being triggered that I did so. At 234 pages and a whopping price tag of $20.99 for a paperback, it’s a wonder why it looks untouched. Flip some burgers for an hour to pay for this… whatever it is. I was told the editor is good, so let’s see how he gummed up the works.
The rules of the one page challenge are simple: I go through the first page of the book(about 300 words or 3 paragraphs) and say where the average reader would stop. These reviews are short, sweet, and to the point (unlike most of these books). The main things we look for are things like tension, a hint at the plot existing, good feng shui, a feeling like the blurb is accurate, a lack of obfuscation, and the story fulfilling its role as a story. As we go along, I’ll explain why readers love or hate certain elements and we’ll see what straws break the camel’s back.
The title, The City in the Clouds, makes me think of fantasy, but it’s meant to be sci-fi. Clouds symbolize knowledge beyond our reach or something like daydreaming, treated as water in air(mystery in knowledge). Saying the title this way makes it seem like the focus is the city itself, which would be cool if it was something like a dystopian or utopian story. Maybe a tech noir or detective story, but… it’s not. This story is actually about a woman, and it’s a comedy, completely conflicting with the genre in two ways.
I didn’t want to say this but Huston… we’re already having problems.
The ebook cover is a drawing of curly haired woman staring at the camera like she’s constipated, while the paperback version is of an anime girl holding a gun and looking like she has diarrhea. Both versions have her in a suit, with a giant gas planet behind her. Both have similar fonts for the title and name, but the ebook version is so blurred and darkened that it reads like a secret message; the physical version being slightly less blurry. If I saw this on a shelf, I wouldn’t recognize this as a book or know what it was called. I find it strange because the back of the book is very clear, given a blue box for clarity, and has a sun with a red sky that would have made more sense than these frumpy women.
I guess the title and name are made illegible because we’re supposed to zoom our eyes straight to the blurb:
Robin Alia Brook is considered a loser. She works at customer service for one of the largest companies in humanity's interstellar empire, gets stood up on dates, and accidentally kills people. Then when her ex-online boyfriend gives her the winning vacation lottery ticket to the famed habitat, The City of Clouds, she reluctantly accepts it.
Upon arrival, she is greeted by the massive, beautiful gas giant Bellona, and all the glamour and prospects of expansion for the famous habitat. And it is the beginning of a celebration, too! For the election of the new habitat captain! But the celebration and vacation are ruined when pirates attack, seeking the captain's riches.
They are ruthless, they are bloodthirsty, and they won't stop until they get what they want. Unfortunately for the pirates, Robin is really good at accidentally killing people, and with her is a rag tag team of a pilot recruit, an egotistical journalist, a veteran photographer, and the captain himself.
It will be a long battle for The City of Clouds, and the outcome is unknown, but one thing is certain... This is the worst vacation ever.
Slight grammar issues here and there, but most wouldn’t notice that “ex-online boyfriend” would mean the boyfriend was online and not anymore. The delivery is a little bouncy, almost appropriate, but doesn’t give much tone from how much info it tries to cram in. Something I noticed is that very little sci-fi is mentioned, with the only thing giving a sci-fi vibe being the idea of traveling to another planet. If this was a vacation to an island, very little would change from how it’s described. Like the title and name on the cover, a lot of what makes this book a book is hidden from us, in plain sight.
At this point, the average reader would probably not give it a shot, unless the idea of pirates and an ironic Die Hard premise is their cup of tea.
No prologue, no maps, no glossary, just a simple chapter 1 to greet us. Ok, I’m liking this already. I know this is a small thing, but the simplicity of just starting a story is a blessing that should be the norm, and isn’t. I haven’t read a single word and this is already the best OPC so far. Yes, it’s that easy.
Don’t ruin the experience with all your fancy try-hard nonsense and the reader will be in hog heaven.
We are told the planet, sector, system, and date. Very effective in establishing the sci-fi element in this single aside, which also lets us know it’s 400 years in the future. The planet is named Andromeda, which is a well known galaxy, so if this is in that galaxy, I assume it’s going for a “New York, New York” type of gag. The editor did a good job, with the first page establishing a scene in a restaurant. What he messed up on was… everything that’s not the scene itself, which makes up 90% of the words.
The protagonist, Robin Alia Brook has her day off described as “shot in the face”, being delivered in present tense and this has it come out awkwardly. I say this because the second sentence is past tense, then it shifts back to present, back to past. This is why people stick with past tense to avoid the headache, and present tense is now used as a hipster novelty to act as if things are more important because they’re happening as they’re written. Most readers just find it as a distraction and it causes something niche to become more niche in the process. The first paragraph ends with us being told that she’s in a restaurant that is 500 feet under the sea, of a planet called Andromeda.
She is to be dining, but she is NOT dining because her date didn’t show. Cue the audience gasping, because this is a travesty. The part that really kills this opening is the sentence “She is currently obtaining nutrients through Poseidon's generous supply of free lemons water and cheesy garlic biscuits.” This was the perfect chance for worldbuilding, to express something futuristic and fresh. Instead, it tied itself to Earth, talked about mundane food like lemon water, and it didn’t use any of these for a punchline.
This is meant to be a comedy, but is absent of comedy. We don’t need a bunch of humor in the first paragraph, but we do expect a comedy to present a tone that can lead to humor occurring. Every scene for a comedy is a setup for gags and punchlines. Much like horror, the scene is built around the mood, which is brought to a peak around half way. The introduction of a comedy book is going to hold a joke in relation to the entire book.
I believe the blurb when it says this Robin character can kill things by accident, because this book dies right after she’s introduced, around the second paragraph. The third paragraph changes the subject to be about other people in the restaurant, acting as a distraction that leads to infodumps of Robin’s outfit and such. I understand that the “joke” is that this woman is stood up on her date and we are to feel her anguish, but the reader shouldn’t be suffering through the opening this soon. Starting here is either far too late or far too soon. If anything, this is something I expect in chapter 2 or something we hear about as she’s on her way to Bellona.
A good way to put it is that this scene is a non-sequitur done in order to give fashion statements, with the important exposition ignored for window dressing.
The average reader needs tension to get sunk into a sci-fi story, because this is a planet we don’t know about with a character we’ve never seen before. What is the point of having this restaurant so deep underwater? There is a city underwater? She has a job, but where does she work? At the Krusty Krab?
Non-sequitur is a distraction that removes us from the scene and the plot to explain things that don’t serve a purpose to either. If I changed the first sentence to only hold what was part of the scene, it would be the characters name and nothing more. To strengthen an opening like this, we would have to set it up for a punchline, reinforce the sardonic tone, and tie the scene with the situation. The first sentence would go like:
Five hundred feet below the sea’s surface, Robin could not stop drinking.
This will give the impression that she’s getting drunk, while attaching her drinking to the sea outside, giving the impression that she’s drowning. But even then, I wouldn’t start here, I would begin with a comedic amount of assurance that she’s going to have her date show up, then the next scene is her waiting with this. That, or I would have her doing the walk of shame, allowing the plot to begin sooner when she gets her golden ticket, which would be like:
The ocean floor outside was slowly swallowed by darkness as the elevator pod took Robin away from Poseidon.
Here, we have a moment for her to think back to the situation, and the word “darkness” gives hint to her current feeling about the restaurant. This is a setup for the punchline that follows, already skipping the failed date and able to move forward to the poster she sees in the elevator. Movies tend to do this type of exposition with the main character telling the situation to another person, who is helpless to escape. That can add more humor and make the main character express their personality quirks. The goal is for less opening to be used up for non-sequitur and to focus it on moving forward in relation to the plot.
For a story like this, the rejection comes from a lack of being straightforward. We can always fix up a sentence and how it sounds, but this doesn’t mean much when the bones are disjointed. Thankfully, for this one, a lot of readers are used to openings like this from online serials, so there is hope that a lot of it will get a pass. It’s that first hump that it has to get over in order to shine. Sadly, for little Robin, that hump was not achieved, so her journey through the city in the cloud might as well not exist.

2024.05.21 21:13 Fun-Consequence9258 georgetown vs emory for premed

hi everyone! i'm currently committed to georgetown. but I'm very grateful to have been admitted off the emory waitlist. i visited emory last week but the semester was over, so there were no students on campus and it was hard to get a feel of student life (there was no guided tour so we had to explore on our own). i didn't learn much when i visited, and after my research, it still feels like there's not enough of a deciding factor for me to switch. maybe if i was accepted rd and visited during admitted students day, i'd feel differently. my gut tells me to stick with Georgetown, but i know emory's pre-med program is strong so I'm worried that decision would be foolish. not sure if the medical school outcome would be much different between the schools, and i would appreciate any thoughts others have!
