2024.05.21 20:36 SNChurches Finally seeing the real version of my dad. Major vent and need advice

I (30f) met my dad (M 64) when I was fifteen years old. We have always been close ever since we reunited. Out of all my siblings on his side I’m the only one who graduated high school and went on a career and maternal/family path. My brothers are either in jail or rehab. And one of my brothers is also terminally ill now.
Fast forward to January of this year, I moved in with my dad because his health is declining majorly. He has COPD, sleep apnea, heart disease, alcoholism (12-18 pack every night), heavy smoker (almost 2 packs every day.) So moving in was more so to take care of him than anything else. My husband and children stayed back so my oldest can finish her school year and I can focus on my dad before he had his back surgery on March 1st, 2024.
At first my dad told me he only wanted us to take over the mortgage for him. Okay no problem. Well Then mortgage turned into every bill. (Cable, electric, water, sewage, AC, etc) and we even footed the bill to replace the liner in the pool ($999) and the installation for it ($250) and the bill to fill it (water bill) which honestly was cheaper than I thought it would be not gonna lie. And our recurring purchases for the chemicals for the pool. But he pressured us into getting that pool done, like would not shut up about it. And my dad has us buy his beer and cigarettes every day except the weekends when I don’t have to go anywhere all day.
On top of that we pay for all the groceries. And clean the house every single day. (Vacuum, mop, deep kitchen cleanup, bathroom cleanup, etc)
Now while hubby and I were on separate sides of the state we were splitting bills between two households. Supporting hubby’s parents as well.
Husband and kids moved in Late March. We bit the bullet of getting the kids over here early due to the treatment they were receiving from Hubby’s dad.
I’ve had my own room this whole time, and my dad was supposed to clear out the spare room so the kids can have their own room. My dad was supposed to do this since February and he barely worked on it.
Well hubby moved in without a job lined up and I’m still building my clientele over here and our money is tight. We can’t afford groceries and my dad’s bills at this time due to our own bills coming out with no income streaming in.
My dad is saying he can’t keep paying for us (mind you it’s been a week since we been tight on funds) and we are both job hunting like crazy, putting applications in everywhere. And last night he told me “since you don’t have the money to get the kids bunk beds I’m not in a rush to work on the spare room.” I never wanted to hit anyone as much as I did in that moment considering I spent their bed fund on groceries and gas for his truck because that was the last I had and I wanted to make sure we had groceries for awhile to sustain us.
Now aside from money and cleaning, I practically have to make two meals per night because of how Picky my father is. He likes very limited food as in beef, rice and corn. Kids and hubby like everything else under the sun. I tried combining my dad’s diet and my family’s preferences into one dinner and my dad still won’t eat it. So I have to do something else for him and since he eats around 9:30-10pm at night I get to have the pleasure of dirtying up pans that I just cleaned up all over again.
And all he does all day is sit in his garage and smoke his cigarettes and drinks his beer.
He comes up with new rules almost every single day. Like my dogs can’t sit on the couch on the patio but his dog can. Tried telling me the kids can’t run in the back yard??? Like wtf. And every time he’s on the phone with his sisters all he does is complain as if we don’t do anything for him. I literally heard my aunt say “does she at least cook for you” referring to me.
My dad says he’s scared that we are gonna pack up and leave him, but at the same time I’m at my wits end and I don’t want to leave him due to his physical health, depression and more.
What would you all do?

🔗Buck 303 with Micarta Handle and Satin Finish

https://preview.redd.it/3boi128xhk1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a2c19b426e24ffbbfc229a0e87d9e66d867d4dae
Recently, I had the chance to test the Buck 303 Selkirk Knife - an impressive survival knife designed to cater to various situations in the great outdoors. This versatile knife has proven itself efficient and reliable in my outdoor excursions.
One of the standout features of the Selkirk Knife is its handle, which is made of a high-quality micarta material. It provides an excellent grip, even when my hands get wet or muddy. The 420HC steel blade is also a significant asset, as it holds up well under all types of conditions - slicing branches, skinning game, and preparing dinner. The blade's satin finish adds to its aesthetic appeal as well.
This knife comes fitted with a sturdy belt sheath that can be configured for either horizontal or vertical carry. I appreciate this functionality because I can quickly access the knife when I need it most. Moreover, the fire startewhistle tool included with the sheath is a handy addition for unexpected situations in the wild.
However, while the Selkirk Knife excels in most areas, I found that it's slightly heavier than other knives I've used. As someone who carries a knife regularly, this extra weight can be noticed after a while. But considering the knife's robustness and superior blade quality, I believe the weight is a small price to pay.
Overall, my experience with the Buck 303 Selkirk Knife has been incredibly positive. It's a valuable tool for those who enjoy outdoor activities or need a dependable knife for everyday use. While there are a few minor drawbacks, the Selkirk Knife ultimately proves itself a high-quality, versatile, and durable option that I wholeheartedly recommend.

🔗Spec Ops Knife: Versatile and Safe Utility Knife for Cargo Boxes

https://preview.redd.it/vmrdxhrxhk1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3bd4be0085ba6c3fb6a2e28e172b5d9b7c5f3b15
The Spec Ops Safety Knife with Holster is a game-changer for anyone who frequently deals with cardboard boxes in their daily life. As someone who has personally used this knife for weeks, I can attest to its practicality and convenience. The patented radius-tip blade not only ensures a safe and secure cut, but also maintains the integrity of the product being cut.
What really sets this knife apart is its versatility; the two edge guides make for quick and accurate top cuts, and the three blade depth settings accommodate various box sizes. The built-in storage, including an extra blade, is a nice touch that adds to the convenience of this tool.
One of the aspects I appreciate the most is the ergonomic, squeeze-action blade trigger. It gives you ultimate control over your cutting projects without causing any strain on your hand. The snap-on holster and lanyard system is a thoughtful addition that caters to both left- and right-handed users.
However, there's a slight learning curve when it comes to using this knife. The process of adjusting the blade dial can be a bit fiddly, which might cause some initial frustration. Additionally, the blades are not standard, which could be a potential issue when it's time to replace them.
Despite these minor drawbacks, the Spec Ops Safety Knife with Holster is a reliable and efficient tool that I highly recommend to anyone looking for a safe and versatile box cutter.

🔗Tactical Belt Knife with Liner Lock and 3 Extra Blades for Durability and Portability

https://preview.redd.it/sj4udb4yhk1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=579880b96756306934e5b64165e511db3bcf3d34
As someone who frequently needs a reliable and durable utility knife for various tasks, I recently tried the Spec Ops Tools Folding Utility Knife. I must say, it has exceeded my expectations in terms of durability and functionality.
One of the most impressive features of this knife is its armor-grade aluminum body. It's clear that this product is built to withstand the wear and tear of even the toughest jobsites. The 3.5-inch folded design with a belt clip also makes it incredibly portable, allowing me to have it on hand whenever I need it.
The pistol-style grip of the Spec Ops Tools Folding Utility Knife is another standout feature. The camo-style, textured body gives it a unique look while providing a comfortable, firm grip. The push-button blade swap is a convenience I've never encountered in a utility knife before, and it makes swapping blades a breeze.
However, there's one area where this knife could improve - the blade storage. While it's great that there are three extra blades included, they can be a bit difficult to access when needed. Additionally, the belt clip can occasionally come loose, which is a slight inconvenience.
Overall, the Spec Ops Tools Folding Utility Knife is a high-quality, versatile tool that I've found to be a valuable addition to my daily routine. Its durability and unique features make it a standout choice among utility knives. Even with its minor flaws, I wholeheartedly recommend this product to anyone in need of a reliable, portable utility knife.

🔗CIVIVI Midwatch: Carbon Fiber Fixed Blade Knife for Outdoor Adventures

https://preview.redd.it/shuofslyhk1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ae04d11302b90753df3d89fcd6943677595e8b67
I've been using the CIVIVI Midwatch FixedBlade for a few weeks now, and I must say, I'm impressed with its versatility. The full-tang construction allows for sturdy and reliable use, and the tactical vibe of the wide clip point blade makes it perfect for piercing, skinning, poking, and slicing. This little guy has even proven to be a handy camping companion, making quick work of kindling when I had to improvise without my hatchet.
The compact size and easy carry make it a great addition to any outdoor enthusiast's kit. The Kydex sheath and paracord lanyard add an extra touch of convenience.
Overall, I'm quite happy with this fixed blade and the combination of the black stonewash N690 blade and black burlap micarta handle gives it a unique and stylish look.

🔗Spyderco Enuff Salt Lightweight Yellow Sheepfoot Knife: Rustproof H2 Stainless Steel & Fiberglass Reinforced Nylon Handle

https://preview.redd.it/vcio8n4zhk1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8569c75838d0f59a92a9b86d392d16d81919044e
The Enuff Salt Lightweight Yellow Sheepfoot Knife from Spyderco is a must-have for those seeking a reliable and durable cutting tool. Its full-tang construction ensures strength, and the multi-position molded sheath offers versatility in carry options.
The H2 stainless steel blade, combined with the yellow fiberglass reinforced nylon handle, provides both rust resistance and a comfortable grip. Handcrafted in Japan, this knife is a perfect addition to any outdoor enthusiast's toolkit.
However, its lightweight design may not cater to those who prefer a sturdier knife. Overall, the Enuff Salt Lightweight Yellow Sheepfoot Knife is a reliable and efficient choice for various cutting tasks.

🔗D2 Stainless Steel Civivi Teton Tickler Knife: Practical, Rugged, and Versatile

https://preview.redd.it/eemw67kzhk1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b2ead18267f9deddaf73fc3e2bbc5b0a61cf542b
Oh, that Civivi Teton Tickler! It's been my trusty companion on my outdoor adventures. The first thing I noticed was the blade made from D2 carbon steel - tough as nails, perfect for those unforgiving terrains. And the handle? Black G10, a solid piece that gets better with time. The knife's balance is just right, making it comfortable to hold.
The leather sheath and box that come with it are a cherry on top. They're not just for display, but also really practical when you're out in the wild. I must say, I'm a fan of the nickel silver guard and pommel too. It adds a touch of class to this functional tool.
However, like any tool, it's not without its cons. Since it's made in China, there's a certain quality issue that you might encounter. But overall, it's a pretty solid fixed blade that's worth the investment for those who love the great outdoors.

🔗Civivi MT Blade 1 Utility Knives - 9Cr18MoV Stainless Steel Blades

https://preview.redd.it/fokdaqtzhk1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=39d51fe0b6c68ab65cee611e8042f528add5116f
The Civivi MT Blade 1 Utility Blades offer versatility and durability for those who rely on a good blade for everyday tasks. Crafted with high-quality 9Cr18MoV stainless steel, these blades are well-suited to handle a variety of uses without succumbing to dullness or rust.
The fact they fit seamlessly into the Civivi Polymorph makes them convenient for users of that knife. What stood out to me, though, was their compact size - at just 1.61 inches in length, these blades are easily portable, making them great for those who are always on the go. Additionally, the inclusion of five replacement blades ensures these utility blades stay sharp for an extended period, further enhancing their overall value as a practical purchase.
Overall, I found these utility blades to be a reliable, efficient, and user-friendly addition to my everyday tools, and I'd recommend them to anyone in need of a high-quality blade on the go.

🔗Civivi MT-1 Copper Multi-Tool: Quality and Versatile

https://preview.redd.it/zfuh74i0ik1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=42bb96fc13d9b438180ddb193a158275531d36f4
As a fellow multitasker, I appreciate the convenience that the Civivi MT-1 copper multi-tool brings to my daily life. The sleek stonewash finish adds a touch of sophistication, while the built-in bottle opener and sturdy door opener ensure that I'm always prepared for any occasion. However, I do wish it came with a larger range of functions and included more rubber caps to protect my devices from any potential damage.
Overall, it's a reliable companion for any on-the-go adventurer.

🔗Civivi Key Bit: Adjustable Titanium Keychain Torx Driver for EDC Knives

https://preview.redd.it/2vgr0ap0ik1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=109db990295197c52796f78b3364e9953cb9e323
I recently acquired the Civivi Key Bit, a handy keychain tool designed by Ostap Hel. This tiny titanium companion is perfect for adjusting most EDC folding knives. Tucked away inside the durable titanium body is a T6/T8 Torx bit held firmly in place by magnets. It's like having a little driver on your keychain, allowing you to use virtually any bit while your keys conveniently double as the handle for optimal torque.
The Civivi Key Bit comes in three different finishes: standard titanium, blue, or bronze anodization. Its container measurements are quite compact at 0.45 inches in diameter, making it a practical addition to any keyring. The key ring itself is made of steel, ensuring sturdiness. The overall length of this tool measures at around 1.69 inches or 43mm.
Additionally, the screwdriver color and finish are both a standard gray, and the screwdriver material is of high-quality steel with a hardness rating of 55-58HRC. Ensuring a perfect seal, the sealing ring is made of rubber.
During my testing, I found this tool to be incredibly reliable and easy to use. Its compact design made it easy to carry around, while the powerful magnet ensured the bit remained securely in place. Despite being quite minimal, the Civivi Key Bit provides a surprising amount of torque, making it an essential tool for those who need it. However, I do wish it came with more color options or finishes to personalize the user experience.
All in all, the Civivi Key Bit is a fantastic addition to any EDC (Everyday Carry) kit and proves, once again, why Civivi is a trusted brand in the knife and tool market.

I've always been a fan of multifunctional tools that can fit seamlessly into my daily life. During a recent trip, I found myself in a situation where I needed a bottle opener and a screwdriver, but didn't want to carry around a bulky set of tools. Enter the Wildcard.
This credit card-sized marvel is the perfect solution for those who value convenience without compromising on quality. The Wildcard combines a knife, bottle opener, screwdriver, pry bar, and ruler all in one sleek package that can easily fit in your wallet. The origami-like heat-treated stainless steel is both innovative and durable, and the replaceable blade adds an extra layer of practicality.
However, one potential drawback is that it may not be TSA compliant, making it unsuitable for travel. But, the Wildcard has got you covered, as its blade can be easily detached and discarded at security checkpoints, allowing you to continue using the rest of the tool without any issues.
The Wildcard is a fantastic minimalist tool that can come in handy in a variety of situations. It's perfect for anyone looking for a slim, all-in-one solution to their everyday tool needs.

Buyer's Guide

When it comes to choosing the right folding pocket knife, the options can be overwhelming. There's a variety of factors to consider, from the blade's durability and sharpness to the handle's ergonomics and pocket clip. In this guide, we'll go over the key features to watch out for when selecting a Civivi Banter, as well as some general advice for ensuring you get the best knife for your needs.

Blade Type and Material

https://preview.redd.it/qt14eyp1ik1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=74fd7f6912e1e627e754ee89eb4680124f3fae08
The Civivi Banter is known for its high-quality blade materials. For the best edge retention and sharpness, look for models with a CTS-XHP or CTS-204P blade. These materials are well-suited for both cutting and piercing tasks. Some Civivi Banter versions may also feature a stainless steel D2 blade for added corrosion resistance. Additionally, consider the blade coating, as some models may come with a protective coating that reduces wear and corrosion.

Handle Material and Ergonomics

A comfortable handle is crucial for a folding pocket knife. The Civivi Banter typically features an ergonomic design with a handle made from G10 or Titanium scales. These materials are durable and provide a secure grip. Look for models with texturing on the handle to help prevent slipping even when your hands are wet or dirty. Additionally, consider the handle's size and shape to ensure it fits comfortably in your hand.

Locking Mechanism

A secure locking mechanism is essential for a pocket knife, especially when performing more demanding tasks. The Civivi Banter often comes with a liner lock or frame lock. A liner lock is typically more secure and has a more straightforward release mechanism, while a frame lock may offer a more robust hold. Be sure to test the lock's tension to ensure it can handle the tasks you intend to use the knife for.

https://preview.redd.it/5jpfj3d2ik1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7bada70b7588f63fde6248224b969ba54b3889fd

Pocket Clip and Carry Options

A convenient pocket clip is essential for a folding pocket knife, as it allows for easy access while on the go. The Civivi Banter often comes with a deep-carry pocket clip that ensures the knife remains secure in your pocket. If you prefer a higher position, you may be able to remove the original clip and replace it with a different one. Additionally, you might want to consider additional carry options like a leather sheath or pouch for added protection and convenience.

Maintenance and Care

To keep your Civivi Banter in top condition, regular maintenance and care are essential. When not in use, store the knife in a protective sheath or pouch to prevent any accidental damage. Regularly clean the knife with a soft cloth and a small amount of mineral oil to prevent rust and corrosion. Avoid using harsh chemicals or soaking the knife in water, as this may damage the blade and handle materials.
When searching for a Civivi Banter, always consider the blade type and material, handle ergonomics, locking mechanism, pocket clip, and any additional carry options. Additionally, don't forget to take maintenance and care into account to ensure your knife remains in top condition for years to come.

🔗SK-5 High Carbon Cold Steel - Chaos Double Edge Knife

https://preview.redd.it/dc49cbtqvj1d1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9d4089e79e7965fd13fe7a2d71456ad04d67598a
One day, I found myself in a situation where I needed a reliable and sturdy knife. After a quick research, I stumbled upon the Cold Steel Chaos, a double-edge fixed blade inspired by the classic trench knives from both World Wars. This knife was designed for modern-day warriors, offering both security and comfort while holding it.
Upon holding the knife, the unique D-ring guard made of reinforced 6061 aluminum caught my attention. It allowed me to grip the knife securely, while also protecting my hand from incoming attacks and damage. The 1055 carbon steel pommel was tapered for punyo or butt-strikes, making it perfect to defend myself in a life-threatening scenario.
The 7.5-inch SK-5 high carbon blade was available in either double-edge or tanto blade shapes. I opted for the double-edge, as I believed it would provide a more efficient cutting and striking experience. The black Tuff-Ex coating on the blade enhanced corrosion resistance and improved cutting power by reducing friction.
The handle, made of 6061 T6 aircraft-grade aluminum, felt solid and secure in my hand. It accommodated a wide range of hand sizes, including mine with average-sized hands. The knife came with a tough Secure-Ex sheath, equipped with a belt loop for dependable and versatile carry.
My experience with the Cold Steel Chaos double-edge blade was nothing short of impressive. It offered a perfect balance between form and function in a sleek design. Although it was a bit heavy compared to other knives, its weight contributed to its strength and effectiveness. One thing that struck me is the sturdy Secure-Ex sheath it comes with – it's a fantastic addition! However, I did notice a few minor drawbacks. Firstly, the blade edges seemed a bit too uneven for my liking. Secondly, I'm not a big fan of the flex hanger option, but that's just personal preference.

The blade has been thoughtfully sharpened on the back so it can be used alongside a firelighter, ensuring a critical fire is never far away.
However, the carbon steel blade does require some maintenance to prevent rusting. It's a small price to pay for the durability and performance this tool offers. The blade itself is just over 3mm thick and is made from high-quality carbon steel, ensuring it's built to last.
The knife's handle is comfortable and easy to grip, making it perfect for extended use. It's ambidextrous, which is fantastic for those of us who are left-handed - a feature not always found in knives. The polyamide handle is not only comfortable but also provides a solid grip, even when your hands are wet or dirty.
The blade has a Scandi sharpening, which makes it easier to maintain a razor-sharp edge. The knife's unique scandi grind also makes it easier to sharpen and keep in prime condition. The knife comes with a durable leather sheath, which not only protects the blade but also attaches easily to your belt, ensuring the knife is always within reach.
In conclusion, the Garberg Carbon Steel Leather is a powerful full gouge knife designed to withstand the toughest challenges. I recently had the chance to try this knife out during a camping trip, and I was really impressed with its performance. The blade was sharp and easy to maneuver, making it perfect for cutting through branches and other tough materials. The black finish was also a nice touch, as it helped to reduce glare and protect the blade from rust and corrosion.
However, there were a couple of things that could have been improved. First, the blade is prone to rust and staining if not properly cared for, so it's important to keep it clean and lubricated. Additionally, the knife comes with a variety of sheath options, but some users might find the options a bit overwhelming or confusing.
Overall, the ESEE-3 Plain Edge W Black Blade is a solid choice for anyone looking for a reliable and durable knife for their outdoor adventures. Lately, I've been getting outdoors more often and needed a durable, warm, and stylish jacket to keep me comfy while I'm exploring. Lucky for me, I stumbled upon the Realtree Camo Canvas Work Hunting Jacket for Men! This jacket is made with 12oz Cotton Canvas and features a cozy quilt lining, which has kept me toasty even on the chilliest of days.
One thing I absolutely love about this jacket is the front pouch pockets - they are so practical for keeping my hands warm and my essentials close at hand. Plus, the Real Tree Xtra camo pattern adds an cool, outdoorsy vibe to any outfit. And, of course, as a faithful Atlanta Falcons fan, I'm thrilled to see my team's logo embroidered on the jacket's exterior.
However, there's one minor issue I've noticed: the hood isn't particularly snug or form-fitting, which can be a bit of a hassle if you're wearing a hat while trying to stay warm. But overall, I would highly recommend this jacket for anyone who loves spending time outdoors, needs a reliable and stylish hunting companion, or simply supports their favorite NFL team!

Plus, the addition of a soft lining and interior pocket makes it feel cozy and secure.

I recently purchased the Mossy Oak Gamekeeper Field Coat to enhance my hunting experience and it certainly did not disappoint. The fleece lining and 100% cotton duck fabric ensure I'm warm and comfortable throughout the day.
The multiple pockets prove incredibly useful for storing my essentials and gadgets. The pleats at the back offer enhanced mobility, making it a breeze to move around without any constraints.
However, the absence of an additional layer of insulation might be a drawback for some during extremely cold weather conditions. Overall, I would highly recommend this field coat for anyone looking to up their hunting game.

When I first unwrapped my Guide Gear Canvas Camo Hunting Jacket, I knew it was going to be a reliable companion during my adventures. The heavy-duty 9.4-oz. cotton canvas/spandex shell instantly caught my eye, as it exuded durability and quality. I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable and quiet it was; making stealth in the wilderness extremely easy.
One of the standout features was its roomy fit. Whether I was dipping and diving through bushes or climbing up trees in pursuit of the perfect shot, the jacket's design allowed for full range of motion without any restrictions. The DWR treatment on exterior and inside pockets added an extra layer of protection against the elements, protecting my essentials from moisture and rain.
The 100% polyester mesh body lining kept me feeling light and comfortable, while the interior patch pockets with hook-and-loop closure proved incredibly useful for storing my essentials. I also appreciated the adjustable sleeve cuffs, which allowed me to customize the fit to my preference.
However, there were a few cons that caught my attention throughout my usage. While the fabric is undeniably high-quality, it does require regular maintenance due to its tendency to accumulate dirt quite quickly. Additionally, I found the jacket to be slightly on the heavier side, making hiking long distances during summer months a little more challenging.
Overall, the Guide Gear Canvas Camo Hunting Jacket has proven to be a reliable and comfortable choice for my outdoor adventures. Though it may have a few minor drawbacks in terms of maintenance and weight, its durability and practical features make it a worthwhile investment for any avid hunter.

I recently got my hands on the Volcom Tony Canvas Field Jacket in Rust, and I must say, it's been an absolute game-changer in my day-to-day wardrobe. This jacket exudes vintage charm with its boxy fit and corduroy collar, while providing the comfortable durability of a 100% cotton canvas.
One of the first things that stood out to me was the flannel liner on the interior. It keeps me cozy and warm, perfect for those chilly mornings when I'm jogging out to get my morning coffee. The pocket placement is also spot on, providing ample storage options without compromising style.
However, one con might be the lack of a hood. Living in a city with unpredictable weather, I sometimes miss having the option to quickly throw up a hood when it starts pouring rain. Despite this, I still find myself reaching for my Tony Canvas Field Jacket more often than not.
In conclusion, the Volcom TonyCanvas Field Jacket in Rust offers a perfect blend of style and functionality. Its unique design combined with practical features make it a must-have addition to any wardrobe.

2024.05.19 03:37 AssholeMouse2024 AITA for Yelling at My Parents to "Get It Together" About Their Dirty House?

I (M22) recently graduated from college. I’ve spent the last few weeks living back with my parents while I figure out career stuff. They’ve been kind enough to let me live here rent free for at least the next few months. It’s been an admittedly difficult transition. I’ve caught myself being moody, snapping at them like a teenager.
The problem comes from the house itself. It’s completely falling apart.
It’s a big two-story that they would never have been able to afford if it hadn’t been sold “as is”. And “is” is filled with rot and pests, and it seems like nothing is being done about it. I knew it was a little dirty when I grew up, but I don’t think I realized how bad it was until I moved back. There’s a lot wrong, but I’ll condense.
We have mice. They refuse to get an exterminator because they’re worried about our two small dogs getting sick. We’ve resorted to dozens of small traps, but the mice have learned to avoid them. They’ve gotten into every room at this point. I’ve found mouse droppings IN THE STOVE.
The house, and especially the bathrooms, are filled with mold. Every time I visited for Christmas or summer, I’d bring it up, clean it while I was there, and when I came back it would be right back to where it was. The shower grout is absolutely coated in black. I had to beg my mother to buy a new shower curtain liner - the old one was knee high stained in mold spots.
My final straw was when I was cleaning out my bedroom closet. A box full of some of my stuff had been chewed through and destroyed by the mice. It had some things that were sentimental AND a few things that were monetarily valuable that I’d bought with my own money. They’d made a nest out of it. The box and surrounding floor were covered in mouse droppings.
I stopped myself from storming to my parents but as soon as I saw them later that day, I started yelling and crying. I don’t remember the exact specifics, but I’d sum it up as such:
“The mold and mouse situation is absolutely fucking absurd.”
Dad: “You are always so judgemental, you always have something to say when you visit”
“Maybe I’d have less to say if you took care of it.”
Dad: “You’re one to talk. You’re not exactly Mr. Clean”
“I’m 22. I’m not the one who bought a house I couldn’t take care of. My shit was destroyed”
Dad: “It’s really not that big of a deal. We’re taking care of it”
“You should fucking pull it together for once. If you think this is "taking care of it". Fucking insane!”
There was some more yelling. I slammed a door like a child. I haven’t really talked to them in the past few days. I was talking to my brother earlier and he mentioned I was “kind of a dick”, and I’m conflicted. It’s not my house but it’s just been concerning me. I’m worried about my and my parents' health.
So, Am I The Asshole?
TLDR: Got into fight with parent over mold and mice in our house, yelled, and I told them to “fucking pull it together for once”

2024.05.18 00:17 Pokken_Champ815 My Sonic Heroes Review

So for a while or so I've been playing older Sonic games just to see if they still held up. So far a majority of the games I played were at the very least good with some of the best ones being Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic rush. But something that might be my biggest Sonic hot take ever is that Heroes is one of the worst games in the entire Sonic series(unpopular opinion I know but let me explain myself). And just a heads up this is gonna be a long one because I got a lot to say about this game.
Because this game has a lot of aspects that I don’t like, I'm going to first touch on some aspects I actually like about the game. Even though not every character was written the best I will say some stand out characters I enjoyed are Cream and Omega, especially Omega but I wanna touch on Cream first. Ever since reading the IDW comics I've always had a soft spot for Cream just from how innocent and adorable she was and that sentiment continued with how she was paired with Blaze in Sonic Rush. I was admittedly nervous about how she would be portrayed in Heroes for reasons I'll get into later but she was handled alright. Nothing too groundbreaking but she kept her cute nature and even had some small moments of sass which was nice. The real star of the show was E-123 Omega. He really only has one thing on his mind with destroying Eggman and doesn’t really go through any sort of character arc, but that’s fine with me because the dude’s funny as hell with how aggressive and angry he is. He doesn’t have much of a face or eyes that are able to emote but you can still tell exactly what he’s thinking. I can’t explain why but every piece of dialogue that comes out of his…mouth?....speakers?...is hysterical. From “ANNIHILATE” to “USELESS CONSUMER MODELS” even down to when he says “GOOD” every time you pop an item box or balloon every quote is comedy gold with how monotone his voice is. The chemistry each team has with each other is nice to watch since from their dialogue you can tell that these trios have known each other for a while, are good friends with one another, or in Team Dark’s case just work friends(but their banter is still entertaining with how Omega keeps telling them to stay focused). And the music is good but as a Sonic fan that’s par for the course at this point. What I’m Made Of is a stand out banger for me.
But unfortunately that’s where all the positives end as we move into the negatives with one of the biggest being the physics of the game being poorly optimized. Throughout my playthrough I have run into so many bugs or victims of poor game design that I’ve lost count. But over half of my deaths have been due to the fact that there are no invisible walls to act as safety nets for players incase they misclick or even do something as simple as do a homing attack or perform a 3 hit combo with a power character, the latter happening way too often because power characters are the most reliable way to deal with enemies. Enemies bumping you are also a common way to die but not because of running out or rings, but because of the lack of walls keeping you on the platforms. Speaking of the homing attack, with how the movement physics work with speed characters I never use them because they end up being too slippery to control with instances where it feels like I'm fighting for control just so I can move forward in a straight line or hit a boost pad on a loop. The Light Speed Dash works whenever it feels like it and there’s no way to aim the homing attack so you pretty much have to press A twice and pray that rn-Jesus does you nice, otherwise you’re falling down a pit like you’re Scrooge McDuck diving into a vault of gold coins. And remember how I said enemies bumping you off cliffs was a common way to die? Well they can also just combo you for free because this game has no invincibility frames meaning you can get hit once and then instantly die if you or one of your teammates doesn’t pick up a ring right after being hit. This is especially apparent in horde fights like Robot Storm where you can get easily swarmed. And a staple mechanic from Sonic Adventure 2 that was butchered in this followup was the rail grinding. It was super fun to build up speed by balancing and crouching but now you just mash B with any real sense of speed being from a speed character. And heaven forbid you decided to grind rail with a flight character unless you like sliding at the speed of a snail, but you might wanna do that anyway to be save because if you switch rails the game doesn’t magnetize your character to it risking you to just shoot yourself off the map just for swapping rails or getting off of a rail.
Another awful aspect with the game is the team mechanic itself. It’s an interesting idea on paper to be able to swap between 3 characters to perform different actions based on what the level throws at you. But the problem with that is not every formation is balanced. The flying formation is awful in every way. The totem formation itself looks weird and looks especially janky with how it looks when going off a set of springs or going through a dash panel loop. How it controls itself makes absolutely no sense either; you jump and jump again to fly which drains a meter, which makes sense since Tails worked in a similar way back in Sonic 2 and still works like that in every other 2D classic style game. But I didn’t learn until the last story that the gauge only drains if you move forwards and won’t drain if you don’t move forward which not only makes no sense but doesn’t work like that in Sonic 2 at all. And whenever the meter runs out you might think that you would just glide down to the floor right? No. Instead the game halts all of your momentum and has you fall straight down like a boulder making flying based platforming impossible which was not the case in Sonic 2. And for some reason there’s a limit for how high you can go even though there’s already a limit you can fly for. Wanna know what game allows you to fly as long as you want until you run out of stamina? SONIC FUCKING 2 ON THE SEGA GENESIS/MEGA DRIVE. Sonic Heroes not only came out 10 years after Sonic 2 but was released on more powerful consoles so I'm baffled that they didn’t even try to make any of this shit work in any similar fashion. And this gets even worse for Sonic Heroes because you know how I just described how they would have improved the flying mechanics in Sonic Heroes? Well it WORKS EXACTLY HOW I JUST EXPLAINED IN SONIC ADVENTURE FOR THE THE DREAMCAST 1999. What the hell were they thinking with this!? This makes absolutely no fucking sense. And the Thunder Shoot attack? It doesn’t do much except paralyze enemies and hit targets meant to help you move forward in levels. Except it only does one of these things correctly since the game doesn’t auto target the targets meaning 90% of the time you’ll be constantly throwing your teammates into the ether while missing entirely as you try again and again to change your angle to hit the target just so you can move on with the average 10 minute level. And the switches you’re meant to pull are janky in their own right but the switches you have to fly for are the worst since no matter how close you get to that switch the game won’t register what you’re trying to do which is annoying as balls. And as the finishing touch all flying character have no differences in gameplay despite slight animations and apparently they have this unique attack they can do if they don’t have party members to throw with Thunder Shoot by pressing B again...but the game doesn’t tell you that and even knew that you’ll never see it in practice because if you toss a teammate with Thunder Shoot they’ll come back almost instantly.
And the biggest failure is that you can no longer spin dash in this game. It’s no big deal, it’s not like they removed one of Sonic’s most essential moves in his arsenal that was present all the way from Sonic 2 and was even in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, useless crap like that. Instead you have to use the stupid Rocket Accel which can’t be activated instantly like the spin dash with instead having the player get a running start to have your teammate boost you forward that doesn’t go as far as the spin dash in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. It’s an alright concept that would be fine to keep if the spin dash remained in the game and not replaced with some trash faker that doesn’t hold up to the original. Which leaves us with the power formation which is the best formation by far but not by much. Power is the easiest one to control since it allows you to properly control your character at a moderate speed, a novel concept I know. But combo attacks that involve the character moving forward in a short burst are risky to use since you could wind up pushing yourself off the map which happens way more often than you’d think and more often than it should. And because they have to share data with all the playable teams they away Knuckles’ ability to climb walls in favor of a tacky looking team glide for platforming just like they took away the Spin Dash.
Another team related mechanic the game introduces is something called the “Team Blast” which has a gauge fill up every time you deal damage to enemies or collect rings no matter how you collect said rings(remember this for later). When a team gauge is filled you can perform a Team Blast by pressing Z that acts as a screen wipe that clears almost every enemy on screen. I say almost because it doesn’t really remove every enemy on screen because some doof over at Sonic Team thought it would be a good idea to give an ultimate attack that’s meant to wipe out all enemies on screen with a limited range, which is smaller than you’d think by the way. Each Team Blast has their own special effect that appears for around 10 seconds after the attack is used which i’ll be talking about when I talk about each team on their own but know that after Team Sonic’s Team Blast Sonic will be able to use the Light Speed Attack from Adventure 1 and 2…but that’s useless when you’re able to still fight as Knuckles and it fucks up your Thunder Shoot when attacking bosses.
And the next fancy mechanic they try adding in is the new level system. And I hate this system so much. The idea of the level system is that your character starts off dealing an ok amount of damage but can get stronger the more you level up by collecting orbs that can drop from enemies. Speed characters get a stronger spin dash, flight characters get a stronger Thunder Shoot, and power characters get stronger combo enders. The problem is that in terms of combat no Sonic game has ever worked like this. For the most part every enemy in a Sonic game that came out before and after Heroes is able to be one shot by a simple jump, roll, spin dash, homing attack, mech shot, boost or punch with the only exceptions I can name off the top of my head being Sonic Rush, Sonic Unleashed’s night stages, and Sonic Frontiers. But those 3 examples are excusable since with Rush it’s only one enemy that has more than 1 HP that doesn’t spawn often and with the other 2 being based more on combat than speeding through levels as fast as possible. Your team will only be satisfying to play after everyone as at the maximum level of level 3 which can be difficult to do since whichever orbs enemies drop when defeated are not only random for when exactly they’ll drop but it’s also completely random who the level up is meant for. Imagine needing to level up your power character to get through a large horde of enemies but instead all the levels go to the other 2 teammates that are virtually useless in a fight. “Ah dammit, I needed a power orb to get to level 2…ah well might as well give my other teammates their 50th orb of the fight.” The only ways to get guaranteed levels for a certain character is with certain item boxes and balloons scattered throughout the level and with checkpoints but the latter only works for the character leading the formation when touching the checkpoint, not to mention they’re single use only. And say you grinded all those levels so you can blitz through this level, guess what, if you die all of your levels get reset and it doesn’t matter if you only lose a life or game over. And i’ve made it very clear how easy it is to unintentionally kill yourself in this game.
Something else that isn’t properly explained is the hidden difficulty system. The problem is that each team campaign has a hidden difficulty system but the game doesn’t tell you that at all unless you want to willingly listen to Omochao(note that I played the tutorial and afterwards I actively avoided his tips on the main menu). The difficulty from easy to hard is Teams Rose, Sonic, Dark, and Chaotix being a gimmick team but the game orders them from Sonic, Dark, Rose, Chaotix which is bad game design because not only are people gonna wanna play as the main character Sonic the Hedgehog, but with how the stories are laid out players would instinctively play from left to right causing them to play the game on normal, hard, easy, and then gimmick which doesn’t make too much sense. I knew the difficulty levels before going in but I played in order of Sonic, Rose, Dark, Chaotix because I like Sonic as a character. But what I wasn’t prepared for is that this game is kinda hard even on the normal difficulty because the game is full of jank that can just kill you for playing the game as intended.
But now for Team Rose and Team Dark. Team Rose is so piss easy that it’s insulting for players who are well affirmed with the series. For one they force you to play the tutorial even after you’ve completed a story previously. Which btw this is the most bullshit tutorial in the history of gaming. Most games have pop ups with button commands and visuals to help the player out or they let the player figure things out themselves. Sonic Heroes does neither of these but instead have this little annoying ass robotic fuck hold your hand throughout the entire thing. What makes this worse is that every time he pops up to tell you what to do your character is stuck in place as you gotta wait for him to shut up so you can play the game only for you to be stopped by his rambling again and again and again until it’s finally over. And most of the skills players can learn on their own since it’s not that hard to just press a random button and get immediate feedback of “oh this button does this? cool beans''. Their moveset is also broken with Amy’s tornado attack being a moving projectile meaning you don’t have to willingly get in contact with the enemy in order to use it, Big having a combo that doesn’t have him move so he can’t fall off the map along with a broken belly flop that’s good for not only combat but weirdly enough platforming, and Cream…she’s just the flier. Their Team Blast is just a win button for no good reason. Not only does it give all of your teammates a free level, not only does it give your team a shield, but it makes your entire team INVINCIBLE. Ok game I get it, stop treating me like a baby. And the finishing touch is that all the levels are cut in half. Awesome. Setting up unrealistic expectations for newcomers and disrespecting older players in one foul swoop.
And then there’s Team Dark…oh Team Dark…when they said this was the “hard” mode they were lying. Because it should’ve been called “kaizo” mode. Enemies are everywhere including places they shouldn’t be, the amount of rings available is greatly reduced, And the bosses become borderline impossible to beat at times(except for the rival fights but we’ll get to that). And not only are there more enemies but the stronger variants of said enemies spawn more frequently. And you’d think their Team Blast would make things better, well yes and no but here’s why. Their Team Blast freezes time completely and I mean completely. Rings don’t spin, projectiles don’t move, even the timer doesn’t tick down. But the most annoying part is if you’re using your Team Blast to try and move forward the puzzles are stuck in time too until the gauge runs out so you gotta sit and wait to move on. And even after you move on the game will probably toss 3 giant armored robots at you at once that fight like mini-bosses(if you know you know) immediately after your Team Blast just ran out.
But before I talk about the final team with Team Chaotix I wanna talk about the level design! Yippee! Except not really because it’s all terrible. The locations and themes are unique in their own right but each level suffers from their own issues coupled with all the bugs that can kill you outright without the player having any time to think about what just happened. Ignoring the main bugs, Seaside Hill and Ocean Palace are fine first levels in all honesty. Power Plant’s elevator section is long and tedious and it’s worse if you have a character than use the Light Speed Dash along with a super stressful rising lava section that you gotta hurry up to climb or else you’re dead. But oooh nooo it’s not that easy because the lava moves faster along with the player which means if you’re too slow, you die and if you’re too fast…you die. Casino Park and Bingo Highway have pinball mechanics that will leave you stuck in one of the tables forever unless you’re a pinball god or just lucky. And we just love games marketed at children that encourage gambling addictions, especially if said gambling minigames are rng. Rail Canyon and Bullet Station rely entirely on rails which don’t work properly as I said before and Bullet Station in particular has a cannon that’s supposed to shoot you onto another rail track but in actuality it fires you straight into the death zone if you’re unaware about this and hold forward…and because it’s a Sonic the Hedgehog game you’re gonna do that. “Gotta go fast” and all that. Frog Forest and Lost Jungle have flying flowers that are so jittery they’re impossible to control, swinging vines with an awkward timing window, and it ends on a chase sequence against a giant crocodile that relies on the janky vines that last way too long. Hang Castle and Mystic Mansion are puzzle-filled mazes with ghost enemies that show up at the worst of times to jumpscare you…which is all the time, and everything else(we all know these levels sucks moving on). Egg Fleet and Final Fortress have tons of bullshit cannons that can home in on you, can snipe you out of the air which can hit you out of a platforming segment and send you falling to your death, crumbling floors, everything’s in the sky so there’s almost no floor to stand on, and rails. The worst part about it all is that all 4 campaign’s use the same exact 14 levels. You heard me right. ALL 4 CAMPAIGNS USE THE EXACT SAME LEVELS. Sonic Adventure 2 had 2 campaigns with levels that heavily differed from each other one way or another. Each campaign has either a speed level, a treasure level, or a mech level and even then it’s not equal to how many levels each type of level gets and each level has a different setting and music track. Rush is the one case I can think of where the campaigns had minor differences. Only thing is that those differences are huge. The levels are the same but they’re in a different order for Sonic and Blaze, Blaze plays completely differently from Sonic, Blaze gets her own music tracks, and Sonic has to use special stages to get the Chaos Emeralds while Blaze doesn’t need any to get the Sol Emeralds. And at the end of every other stage you gotta face off against-
Bosses! They all suck for different reasons. The mech fights boil down to mashing homing attacks like it’s a Mario Party minigame, the rival team fights are a joke, and the horde fights…oh my god the horde fights. I’m just gonna rip the band-aid off here. ROBOT. FUCKING. STORM. This is not only the worst “level” in Sonic Heroes but the worst boss fight out of any Sonic game I have ever played. Team Sonic’s is hard enough as is, Team Rose’s is a pushover(as is every boss in their campaign really), Team Chaotix…we’ll get to them later. But Team Dark’s has to be the boss fight that throws the bullshit at you. Don’t believe me well then let’s see here, we got; a long robot gauntlet that feels like it takes years to get over with, more enemies that spawn with a lot of them being the stronger variants of the enemies we’ve already be accustomed to, multiple giant hammer wielding robots paired with either robots that heal them or robots that sap all your rings which because it’s a Sonic game it’s basically life steal, and because this game was programmed with monkeys holding hammers the enemies will constantly knock your ass off the map and there is NOTHING you can do about it except pray. Pray to rn-Jesus that you can make it out alive with what little sanity is left in your body. And after all that Eggman has the balls to say what I'd call the worst line in any Sonic game, “Don’t get too excited boys! Those were the easy ones!”. It’s genuinely unbelievable that such a level exists. This was marketed towards kids. How is fucking little Casey who just got Sonic Heroes as their first video game gonna beat this shit? He’s not. Because the developers didn’t think about that just like they didn’t think about anything in this game except making a “fun” gimmick. But that’s not all. Because there’s one more boss...
Egg Emperor…and the bullshit continues. I definitely know what true evil is when facing this boss all right. The fight consists of running across a few platforms before making your way over to a bigger arena. The boss only has 3 attacks but 2 of them are what make this boss a slog to get through. He can fire energy waves by swinging his lance like he’s Cloud Strife and a charge attack that has no weaknesses that the game says activates whenever you’re too far from him. Because this is a Sonic game I figured that meant he can only charge if you’re too slow, but if you manage to run ahead of him he’ll charge anyway. But if you get too close to him you could risk either getting hit by a lance beam or by his massive hurtbox. And you might be thinking “why don’t you homing attack the body at that point?” and that’s because he has a shield that blocks all attacks and it’s only worth attacking his body after the second part of the fight where you go to that arena section. In the arena section you have to destroy some cannons and defeat some enemies before getting to the big man himself. You can make him drop his shield by using Thunder Shoot and follow up with your Power character but you probably wouldn’t do as much damage as you were hoping for since in order to do any real damage you’ll have to level your Power character up to level 3 which could take forever in this fight. After a certain amount of time the boss will flee causing you to chase after him again and repeat the boss cycle. But don’t go too fast because then you’ll wind up smacking right into his body or he’ll swat you out the air like a fly with a lance beam attack. And you can’t go too slow or else he’ll just charge at you which if he does it at the wrong time he can intercept your approach and boop you off the map meaning you’ll be dead. And if you thought that was enough, because the developers don’t know how to properly make things different between campaigns you have to fight this motherfucker 4 SEPARATE TIMES. And it doesn’t matter what campaign you go through because you’ll always have a tough time regardless of difficulty. I know it’s the final boss and that it’s meant to be a challenge but holy shit tone it down, there’s kids playing this shit.
And the last campaign involves Team Chaotix and they’re by far my favorite team to play as…and they still have problems. Instead of going through levels the same way you did 3 separate times already it instead focuses on missions. And I have mixed feelings about this. It’s great because it finally keeps things fresh and gives the player another way to experience the game that isn’t platforming focused. The problem is the fact that it’s still the same levels, levels that were meant for an action platformer instead of things finding an x amount of…I don’t know seashells. While the treasure hunting stages were my least favorite aspect of Sonic Adventure 2 they at least did a better job with the concept than some of the collecting missions in Heroes since the maps are built specifically for this kind of gameplay and there was at least a tracker telling you if you were going in the right direction. The Chaotix has you searching through levels you’re meant to speed through while not giving you any sort of tracker to tell you if you’re in the right direction. The Casino Park one in particular was the worst one because of the instructions: “Win 200 Rings!”. Anyone who sees this probably assumes they mean to use the slot machines since we’re a casino level with slot machines built into the pinball tables. But the thing is you can easily just collect 200 rings by playing the stage. But the game doesn’t say collect 200 rings, it says win 200 rings which is the dumbest piece of misinformation in this game and that’s saying something since this game loves to withhold information from the player for no reason. Like did you know you can fire your Thunder Shoot at nothing to charge your team gauge? Or that even though the game says to use a Speed character’s tornado to deal with shield enemies Power characters can punch right through them no problem? You probably didn’t because the game doesn’t tell you this. Anyway the stealth missions are the best ones because Espio’s invisibility is broken. And their Team Blast causes any enemy destroyed to turn into rings and for the duration of the meter any enemy destroyed turns into rings. This is the most broken move in the game. Why? Well remember when I said that the Team Gauge charges from attacking enemies and collecting rings? Well the game counts any rings collected towards the meter. Meaning if you destroy enough enemies at once with this attack you can immediately get your gauge back to repeatedly use again and again. It’s such an easy exploit to pull off that I'm not even surprised that this was left unchecked in all honesty. It even makes the dreaded Robot Storm look like a joke.
So that’s it. You beat all the 4 campaigns and you’d think that it’s time for the usual last story, right?...right? Well unfortunately special stages make a return and with that the 7 Chaos Emeralds. And this is by far the worst one. In the past special stages were unlocked by method of holding at least 50 rings until the end of the stage and jumping into a warp ring in Sonic 1 or holding at least 50 rings and jumping into a star post in Sonic 2 or by jumping into a giant warp ring hidden in the level in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Sonic Heroes decided they wanna be a bit quirky in a horrible way. In order to access the special stages in this game you have to collect a key hidden in the stage and bring that key with you until the end of the level or mission in order to unlock the special stages and collect the Emeralds…there’s so much wrong with this…Not only is it already easy for the game to send your ass to the shadow realm for existing but if you get hit and lose your key it doesn’t just fall out like rings do, it disappears completely meaning you’ll have to reload at a checkpoint or worse, restart the entire level every single time you get hit. And after you get through that bullshit we get to the special stage itself…if you’ve played this game you already know what’s up. The special stage acts similarly to the half pipe in Sonic 2 but except it’s a full enclosed pipe you run around in. The goal is to collect orbs to fill your boost meter and speed ahead to catch the emerald. It sounds very simple but remember, this game was coded by monkeys with hammers so the physics don’t function. Your character will constantly jitter around while moving making positioning yourself impossible when trying to collect the orbs. You have to pick between a Power or Speed character because Flight characters are too slow to do anything but even then you’re picking your poison. Do you wanna control your character better at the cost of speed or do you wanna go fast in order to get the emerald quickly at the cost of controlling your character? ‘Cause that’s exactly what it feels like. And I'm still not done because each Emerald is locked into every other stage. Sonic 1, 2, and 3 & Knuckles allows you to get the Emeralds as easy as the first 2 or 3 zones if you know what you’re doing. If you miss an emerald in one of the few stages they appear in you’ll have to repeat the level and do everything I just explained ALL OVER AGAIN. WHAT KIND OF COLLECTOR HATING SADISTIC BASTARD THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA WHEN THE EMERALDS ARE REQUIRED TO BEAT ALL OF THE STORY!? Before going in I knew how bad the special stages were while being blissfully unaware how bad the unlock requirements were so I used save states(yes I used an emulator) to collect the emeralds in a timely fashion. Not only did this end up taking longer than expected even with save states but I was forced to keep using them for every time I got hit, sent off the stage, or missed the Emerald causing my save file to corrupt and erase all my data. Which caused the auto save to fail and use exclusively save states to progress. And let me tell you, nothing’s scarier than booting up the game and discovering all of your save data has been completely erased even after you completed 2 campaigns previously.
Before I get into the last couple topics of discussion I'll touch on some minor things that don’t warrant their own paragraph individually. The voice acting is hit or miss with stand outs like Omega and Sonic and then there’s instances of some of the worst voice acting in the series with Tails where they deadass brought an 8 year old to voice the character. “Look at all those Eggman’s robots!”. But it gets weirder since Cream was voiced by an actual voice actress and Charmy was voiced by a teenager. Doesn’t help that the game has the characters not stop talking for every single damn action in the game. It’s the same cheesy lines for the entire playthrough. The game looks ugly with the admittedly improved models having textures that look like they’re plastic toys ready to be sold in some Walmart or Target. The pre rendered cutscenes might be revolutionary at the time but are horribly dated by today’s standards and the in game cutscenes that start at the beginning of boss fights and levels look extremely jittery and stiff with characters’ arms flailing to move into position, Omega’s eyes constantly bugging out, and the camera repeatedly having a stroke. Some assets feel like they are copy/pasted and slapped onto characters that don’t make sense. Omega and Big share the same aura color along with Espio and Sonic sharing the same aura color, purple and blue respectively. Omega’s triple glide animation looks exactly like Knuckles’ even though he could’ve been animated to use his thrusters. Rouge has a weird outfit change that is never used again. Some might think that it could be for censorship reasons but her chest is still exposed through a cleavage slit in the outfit which makes me wonder why they even bothered to change it. Plus her pink eyeshadow is less aesthetically pleasing than her iconic bright blue. It’s unclear if all the teams are doing everything at the same exact time or not making things really confusing. The way the characters are written are all over the place with a mixed bag across the board. Team Dark’s great as characters but then you have Tails who’s portrayed to act like some scaredy baby and Amy who’s been turned into a hyper thirsty yandere that’s willing to beat Sonic into marrying her. But all of that is nothing compared to how dirty they did Shadow.
Every team has their own mini story that drives their plot forwards; Team Sonic has to find and defeat Eggman, Team Rose is looking for their lost friends, Team Chaotix is tryna get the bread, and Omega, specifically Omega, is out to look for Eggman for revenge for locking him in a vault. Shadow though…ok first off, why is he here? He literally sacrificed himself to save the planet Earth from the space colony Ark with characters honoring said sacrifice and mourning his death, Sonic included…But then they decided to bring him back along with amnesia and a clone side story that makes him question who he is. The clone story is the dumbest shit in this entire damn game. As if it wasn’t enough to make him forget all the events of Sonic Adventure 2, which can kinda make sense if he was sent into a coma after crashing on Earth. But now he has to go through some midlife crisis level shit to try and figure out his past and if he’s even real, which spoiler alert: this game doesn’t resolve either plot point. These points were further developed and resolved by the next game; Shadow the Hedgehog which wasn’t the best game by all means but it gave more of a fuck to have a concrete story than Heroes ever did. And what’s worse is if the clones were gonna be brought up again in Shadow the Hedgehog and then be resolved in that same game then what the fuck was the point of doing any of this shit in Heroes!? All that did was leave Shadow’s story on a cliffhanger that accomplished nothing but made fans confused and left them with unanswered questions for 2 years until Shadow the Hedgehog came out.
But finally, after collecting all 7 Chaos Emeralds and beating all 4 Team campaigns you’re rewarded with the Last Story which reveals that Metal Sonic was the real mastermind behind everything that happened in the game so he can copy everyone’s data and assume a powerful new form…that takes way too long to transform into…with Metal Overlord…just to beat Sonic. Not even world domination, just to beat Sonic. While his dedication is admirable it’s a really shallow goal. Plus the buildup towards him being the main big bad isn’t handled as well as it could’ve been. All we get are a background element that people would miss if they’re too focused on just beating the level, an extra animation at the end of a boss cutscene that only appears for Team Sonic and Shadow’s story, and a few lines of dialogue from Team Chaotix’s “client” that makes it clear that it’s Eggman. But it would’ve been better to actually know how all of this happened in the first place. Metal Sonic shows up as Neo Metal Sonic as the first time we see him in this game with no explanation as to how he got this form or how he found out he can copy others’ abilities. Not even a cutscene or backstory from Eggman in the final story, instead he just complains about how they can’t defeat him without the Chaos Emeralds. Without prior knowledge I wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking that Metal Sonic just got a redesign since he hadn't made an appearance in the Adventure era at that time. How cool would it have been to have been given cutscenes showing us Metal Sonic twisting and contorting his body to not only show how he managed to do this in the first place but how far he’s willing to go to beat Sonic without spoiling the final form to leave the audience in suspense before the final act? And him not revealing that he copied Team Rose and Team Chaotix data kinda comes off as him not recognizing their strengths and calling them too weak to copy from, even if he didn’t say so himself. The segment where the teams do their best to weaken Metal Madness for Team Sonic is fine enough except the coding monkeys did it again and made it so that Flying characters can’t do any damage. But then there’s the final battle with Super Team Sonic…Team Super Sonic…uh…a Chaos Emerald powered Team Sonic. Admittedly the fight is really cool with Metal Overlord chucking entire battleships at the player and talking about how he believes he’s the real Sonic as What I’m Made Of blasts in the background. But there’s 2 major things that bring this fight down for me. Sonic Adventure 2 did a similar sequence of the cast of characters help Sonic and Shadow go super and defeat the big bad. Only difference being the buildup was more elaborate and the stakes were higher as if they failed the entire planet was at stake along with the presentation of the final fight being better in every way. One fight takes place in outer space while the other takes place in the sky a vague height above the ground. And most insulting of all they robbed us of bringing back Super Knuckles and Super Tails. This might’ve been because of the retcon of super forms only being possible with male hedgehogs but that was a massive missed opportunity. And after the fight is done Sonic drops one of the corniest one liners in the franchise, the 5th set of unskippable credits scrolls on screen, and the game tells you to do everything again but get to A ranks this time as one final fuck you.
In conclusion the game had a lot of…interesting ideas to say the least in terms of mixing up the Sonic formula. Unfortunately they used too much gas when trying to cook and sent the entire dish ablaze. I think if they let this game simmer a bit more and took at least a year to iron out all the bugs and mishaps since this game was developed in 20 months. As a comparison Sonic Adventure 2 took 18 months to develop and was still better. And while I've made comparisons to past Sonic games I wanna make it clear that I am aware of the flaws those other games have. After all, nothing is perfect. But Sonic Team at least could’ve made sure that their game was worth it in spite of these flaws by tweaking some game mechanics to make them more fun. And feel free to say why you’d think this game is peak Sonic. Alright that’s all, thanks for reading this far and have a fantastic day.

2024.05.13 02:16 TheBattleFaze A funny story regarding sex with my boyfriend today.

My boyfriend, bless his heart, says he isn't very good with dirty talk. I wouldn't consider myself all too great at it either but I've had some decent one liners here and there.
My boyfriend and I were having sex this morning and we usually finish in different ways, this time he wanted to stroke me to completion. As he was doing so, I'm getting close and things are getting intense so I tell him I'm about to cum.
He responds with dirty talk. Usually we don't dirty talk at all but he was in the moment. He said something that he thought was too rude and switched it up mid sentence. So just as I start shooting a load, he said "Give me your cum, you son of a gun".
I burst out laughing mid orgasm. So does he. Son of a gun?? Lol he was thinking "son of a bitch" but he's not typically that aggressive or crude, he just didn't know how to do dirty talk without sounding a little insulting. Which led to him switching it up to the now infamous line.
Just wanted to share.

Paypal goods & services preferred, prices do not include shipping.
Flying out west next Tuesday and then up to Alaska soon after. With limited space I've decided to sell a bunch of other stuff that I'm not bringing with me, rather have it be worn then hanging up at home. Things are priced accordingly but I'll listen to reasonable offers on most things because beer is really really expensive in Alaska. And the food is too. I've got no problem letting it sit unused BUT beer is really really expensive.
686 Men's Anything Cargo Pant, Relaxed Fit, Tobacco - 34x32 - These pants rock but were always too long for me. So many pockets without the bulge of traditional cargoes. Great material and comfort. Maybe worn 3 times. Retail for $130
$80 - https://imgur.com/a/82w54k4
686 Men's Everywhere Featherlight Chino Pant, Relaxed Fit , CHARCOAL - 34x32 - Same deal as above minus the pockets. I'll be replacing these with a 30" inseam if they ever sell them. Amazing travel pants, also worn maybe 3 times. Retail for $100.
$60 - https://imgur.com/a/qYdOUNj
Lighttrek Sun Umbrella - Canyonlands Edition - Bought when I was guiding more in the Southwest but I never really used it. Some discoloration but works as promised. I need something more burly for Alaska. Weighs about 9-10oz. Tough to find in the States now. $20 - https://imgur.com/a/fPLVRLd
Salomon Hydropak Running Soft Flasks - Bought these to use with a backpack I don't have anymore. They never really fit in it anyways so I maybe used them once. Retail for $22 each.

LP323 Multi-Color Broadbeam Headlamp w/ Spot Light - Brand new, never used.
$5 - https://imgur.com/a/BTURSvQ
Men's Clothing:
Mountain Hardwear Canyon Short Sleeve Shirt - Large - Absolute favorite guiding/hiking shirt. I've worn them in the SW, Alaska, Africa, while hiking the Inca Trail. They breathe like crazy and protect you. But I have too many of them and I have this one in long sleeve in the same color so it's not coming with me. Also the least worn of them I have. Like new.
$30 - https://imgur.com/a/h1npuH9
Vintage Timberland Boots - Men's 9 - Were my late father's. I don't know if he ever wore them. If he did it was probably only once or twice.
$10 - https://imgur.com/a/iPJfxnw
Women's Clothing:
Universal Standard Next to Naked Pocket Leggings / Tights: Black Cherry, Women's 14-16 / Small, Men's Medium - Some of the top rated leggings out there. SOLD Roark Bless Up Travel / Hiking Shirt - Men's XL - Blue green print - Only worn once. I bought this for a trip to South America and it's just a little too long for me. Super breathable and lightweight while still stylish. Tons of little perforations to let your body heat out. These shirts are perfect for travel and warm weather hiking. I don't want to sell it but I know I'm not going to wear it again. If you're 5'11" or taller it will be perfect for you. Retails for $90.
$30 - https://imgur.com/a/6wJw8er
SOLD REI Wallace Lake Flannel - Men's Large - Bought it. Wore it a couple times. Forgot I had it. Nice lightweight flannel. Stylish if you're into that.
$10 - https://imgur.com/a/6ca4hRc
SOLD Eagle Creek Zip RFID Travel Wallet - I've taken this all over the world and it still looks like new. Bought a really nice leather one though and don't need 2
$10 - https://imgur.com/a/JeTuaJ4
SOLD Outdoor Research Vigor Grid Fleece Half Zip - Men's Large - Another fantastic piece that I just have room to take with me. Mainly because the color doesn't work on me but the less vain reason is because my Capilene Air Fleece packs is lighter and easier to pack.

2024.05.08 00:50 Passionfruit4Life FTM - Registry Must Have's/Don't Needs 2024

Reddit was insanely helpful to me as I constructed my registry as a FTM, and I wanted to pay it forward and create a detailed post as a now FTM to a 4 week old of what I think are must have's, don't needs, and what I purchased after my daughter was born. When I did my searching, a lot of what I found was quite frankly some obvious stuff like a crib, diapers, etc., so I wanted to take the time to list some more "obscure" stuff along with details around certain items I would have found helpful.
Places I registered at:
Amazon - loved it. Super easy to use, and pretty much everyone knows how to use it and/or has Amazon Prime these days. The welcome box was great, and the returns are super easy. I did not have any isssues with counterfeit products, but I also did not register for many big ticket nursery items such as a crib, etc.
Babylist - I only created a registry here to register for their sampler boxes. I CANNOT recommend these enough. The Bottle Box, Swaddle Box, Diaper Box, and Pacifier Box. We got to try all different kinds of the above items and ultimately ordered more of the kinds she ended up liking! The con to Babylist is that a lot of people find it not user friendly, and the buyer has to actually manually mark items as purchased and they often forget to do so and it's very annoying.

2024.05.07 03:08 ApprehensiveCap6525 Exchange Program Shenanigans (46)

This is officially part 2 of the Exchange Program Shenanigans final arc.
Yeah I think this community is long past its prime tbh. We've fallen off. May God help us.
CW: vietnamese sniper nest, jelim gets really high, jelim is misgendered at least once, properly foreshadowed plot twist, Prestige Exterminator Vrapic
Memory Transcription Subject: Jelim, Extermination Commander
Date (standardized human time): September 21, 2136
I was really not built to take breaks. I rarely ever did, but I couldn't really tell if that was the cause or the symptom of my not-quite-a-problem.
Well, sometimes it was a problem. I knew Jack would've liked it if I took more time off for my personal life. But, on the other branch, I had a lot of plaques on my office wall back at the district. Couldn't get that if I kept slacking off.
Well, technically, I wasn't slacking off. Technically, I was healing from the ass-beating I had gotten from Heval a little while. Yeah, I'd say I'm good as new by now. Pride's still bruised, though. But, still, people were dying. I should've been out there.
The news broadcast in my hospital bed turned off. That was a shame. It was the one thing I liked looking at in this sterile and soulless room.
Okay, let's take inventory here. We've got... let's see... we've got a wall... another wall... ooh, that one has a window, but yep, still mostly wall. All white, too. You know, it wouldn't kill these people to add in a splash of red or green in here.
"Okay, Jelim, focus up." I turned to look at the door.
Isola stood in it.
Oh. That's unexpected.
"Why the hell are you alive?" I snapped. Okay, maybe not the best way to start a conversation. "And where the hell have you been?"
Now, that's an important question. Good on you, Jelim. You should ask those more often.
She walked into the room, closing the door behind her. "First of all, that's not important. And second of all, I did some snooping. That's why I say you have to focus up." Oh, I was focusing.
"Well, first of all, that is important." It was. But it could be discussed later. "But, as to the second part, I'm all ears." There was nothing she could say that I hadn't already heard.
"Sevros is going to get away." Oh. There was. That was a new one. "I know it. His shuttle is being prepared for launch right now."
God damn. How does she know this stuff?
"He's stored the shuttle at an abandoned hangar in the mountains, his convoy is on its way there right now," said Isola. "If we go fast, we can catch them."
"How, exactly, do you know this?" I asked.
"You think you're the only one who can talk to Salvek?" Oh. That made a lot of sense, actually. "I'm a lot smarter than I usually get credit for." And a lot more arrogant, apparently.
"Your results should speak for themselves, Isola." I waved a wing at the far wall, where my bodyguards had put up my fifth 'Valor Under Fire' award until I could hang it in my office. "Like that."
"Fair point," she conceded. "Now, let's go. We don't have any time to waste."
I sighed, smoothed out a few feathers, and hopped out of my hospital bed. If I'm going to be wrapping this whole thing up, I'd better look nice in the process. "I'll go ahead and secure the shuttle bay, you drum up whatever force you can spare to finish this off." I was already making a plan, a pretty good one too if I do say so myself, and I was out the door in seconds.
"I'll send the location to your pad!" Isola exclaimed before we parted ways. She could probably find Karelim and a few others, if everybody wasn't already fighting in Federation Tower.
I knew those idiots should've held some officers in reserve! I could've told them as much, too, but they didn't brahking listen. I swear to god, this Guild is going to drive me off the deep end one day.
I found the stairwell, waved off all the hospital workers I found, and jumped over the railing to land gracefully on the bottom floor. I love my wings. I was in the basement. Never mind.
Well, better get to work. There's got to be a ramp here somewhere.
I left the stairwell to find myself in a hospital parking garage that was mostly empty of cars, with an extermination van pulling in via a ramp. Oh. Great! Reinforcements!
I ran over to the vehicle, waving a wing in the air, but I stopped in my tracks when I saw who was driving it. Oh. Great. Vrapic. "Didn't I send people to arrest you?" I asked, patting my hip for a sidearm that I hoped I wouldn't have to use.
"You did. I want to know why."
"Officer Kern advised me-" He cut me off. Yep. I already know where this is going.
"And you believed him?" Vrapic scoffed. "Him, a predator, a creature built on violence and lies?"
I shrugged. "He's been pretty straightforward so far."
"You are a danger to the people of Dayside City, Jelim." Oh, you say that again. Say that again, and see what happens. "You've allowed yourself to become tainted by a predator, and I can't allow that."
I put my claw on the butt of my pistol. "And what, exactly, are you going to do to stop me?" I could deny the accusation, but we both knew that wouldn't work on his type. God, I hope I won't have to kill him.
He also carried a pistol. I did not want to use mine. I stepped closer to the van. "You stay back!" He drew his gun. I took another step. He fired once at my feet. "Put on the cuffs, or your brain paints the floor." He tossed a pair of handcuffs at my feet.
Only one? Dumbass.
"Well, you've got me," I sighed. I unclipped my holster and tossed it away before bending over to put on my handcuffs. "What now?" I gave a pitiful two-clawed wave.
"Get in the van." God damn, you really are stupid, aren't you?
I took a few sheepish steps forward, feigning cooperation until I got within claw's reach of his gun. Then, in a flash, I grabbed his wrist with both claws and pushed it up and away from my head. He didn't fire.
So he doesn't have it in him to shoot. Good. That's good. It means he's not too far gone.
I was getting old, as exterminators went. Vrapic was supposed to be my replacement. I had been training him for years to turn out more or less like me. Funny how that turned out, huh? At the moment, however, I was kicking him in the chest. Sometimes, things didn't go as planned.
I kicked once in the chest and once in the liver for a nasty two-piece combo, sending him doubled over and gasping in time for a nasty shot to the head.
Not from my gun, of course, but God damn it must've felt like it. My kicks were brahking lethal. I wasn't even exaggerating that much.
Vrapic dropped like a two-hundred-pound sack of bricks. Stay down, dog. Next time, don't bite the hand that feeds you. I really needed to write some of these one-liners down. Or maybe start saying them out loud. Either one was good.
Anyway, I had work to do. I did a brief check on the response team, which was going well, and I went outside. It was a beautiful day out. Not very windy. The sun was high in the sky, too, which it usually was in a place like this.
Usually? Hell, try always. I brahking hate this planet sometimes.
The gravity felt heavy on my oh-so-fragile bird bones. It always did. That was why no Krakotl I knew could manage to fly on this planet.
Quite frankly, most of the Krakotl I knew were lazy.
I took off, with some effort, and it didn't take long before I was high enough to rely on wind and updrafts to ease my flight. After that, it was smooth sailing all the way to the shuttle pad. I passed the skyscrapers in seconds, was in the forest just as quickly, and it was nothing but clear skies and beautiful views before I reached the coordinates Isola sent me.
How did she find those, anyway? I might have to ask.
It took me a while, but I was nothing if I wasn't tough. After enough time, I could begin to make out the gray peaks of a mountain range in the distance. I wasn't even sure Venlil Prime had those.
I didn't see anything special at first, even with my sharp vision. Hell, I could barely see the road after so many years without maintenance. It was practically overgrown by now. I closed on the coordinates, finally making out the gray of a shuttle hangar against the gray of the nearby mountain range, before some idiot shot at me from below.
Three-round bursts. Automatic weapon. The shooter's probably camouflaged above the tree line.
I tucked my wings and rolled, losing altitude fast, pretending as if I had been shot. I even yanked a few feathers free and scattered them to give the illusion of a bullet impact.
Yeah, that probably won't do anything, but I've always had a flair for the dramatic.
I landed fast and hard on the forest floor, drawing my pistol and searching. In the distance, not too far away, there was a hangar door and a dirt road leading up to it. I saw it through even all the thick underbrush of the place, because it was a really big type of shuttle, and I heard a few voices as well. Mercenaries, most likely.
They were approaching my position. Must've seen where I fell, and now they were confirming the kill. I could see three armed Venlil heading toward me, cautious but still entirely oblivious.
Okay, let's think here. They don't know I'm alive. They don't know where I'm hiding. I'll take them out one by one.
I crouched by a tree, waiting for the mercenaries to get close enough to act. I holstered my weapon, opting instead for the element of surprise. No weapons. They make too much noise. Just claws.
There's one... two... where's three? I looked around. I heard a twig snap a short distance behind me. There's three.
Footsteps. Closing. So close, now. I lied in wait like some kind of ambush hunter, crouching down like a coiled spring, until I saw a black-furred shape appear in my view.
Three feet away. Five and a half feet tall. Lightly armed. Totally oblivious. He swept the forest with his rifle, moving slowly and tactically, but it wasn't doing him any good at the moment. He had no idea what was coming.
I sprang from my cover the second he looked away, knocking him to the ground with a sweep of my leg and cutting out his throat at the same time. It wasn't pretty, killing never was, but I did it easily enough. One down. Two to go.
The second one wasn't much harder. The bushes were thick, thick enough that I couldn't move in them without creating noise, but he and his friend were making just as much so I just stayed low and did my job. Swept his legs, cut his jugular, light work all around.
The third guy was smart, though. Really smart, because he started booking it back to home base the second his friends stopped responding. Clearly, he wasn't getting paid very much.
Unfortunately, there was nobody else left outside. I shot him. I never did get how some people got used to that.
Now, it was time to go inside. There was a side door next to the main one, unguarded of course, and I entered it. The hangar was large, but that was to be expected. Dusty, but that was also to be expected. A quick sweep of the grounds confirmed my earlier suspicions that, yep, nobody was left inside. Idiots.
I had a text from Isola. First, Heval hadn't been spotted at Federation Tower. That was bad news. Second, Sevros' men were ten minutes out. That was worse. I had to work fast.
I had seen a perfect vantage point on my way here. I had an assault rifle with a poorly-attached sniper scope, courtesy of the guy who tried shooting me earlier, slung across my back. I went outside, spread my wings, and took to the skies.
This was going to be over quickly.
I saw movement on the road not long after. I was in a perfect sniper's nest, concealed by foliage and with a good vantage point to the road, and I waited until they reached a part without much cover before I began firing.
There were three vehicles, and my sniper's nest gave me a good vantage point on all three. Two were exterminator trucks, and their complements of hired muscle were all exposed in the flatbeds. The other was an exterminator van, much less exposed and in the center of the convoy. Sevros' vehicle.
I shot that one first, popping a tire and sending it skidding to a halt. The rear truck crashed into it, damaging them both, and I triple-tapped most of the goons in its flatbed before they could do anything. The forward vehicle stopped, a stupid call given the situation, and I shot out its tires before putting down the machine-gunner who had stayed in the flatbed. Everybody else had bailed out.
There were only a few goons left now. No more than ten, by my guess. They were all taking cover by the trucks, looking for me to no avail, and I lined up a shot on one of them on the other side of the convoy.
It worked. They seemed to think I was shooting from the opposite direction of where I actually was, despite the fact that the body fell the wrong way, but Venlil muscle men were hardly the smartest of the bunch. They practically fell over themselves to get to my side of the convoy, inadvertently leaving them completely without cover.
To borrow a human idiom, it was like shooting fish in a barrel.
The entire security force was cleared out in three minutes, barring a few stragglers. None of them had ever faced a sniper before, and they seemed content to huddle in places where I had already tried and failed to shoot them. I could wait until Isola's people got here, they weren't far out, but I really didn't want to.
If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. Especially in this economy.
I flew from my sniper's nest like I had places to be, which I did, and I landed hard and fast next to the middle van. I cleared the outside of it first, taking out whatever goons I'd been too preoccupied to shoot earlier, before my attention was grabbed by a door opening at the back of the van.
More goons. Great.
The first one to come out got two in the head. So did the second one, as I advanced to clear the inside. I moved quickly, a bit sloppy too, and a brown paw shoved my rifle to the side. "You son of a bitch!"
Excuse me? I'm a woman, I'll have you know.
I ducked and rolled as a fist flew at my head, only to catch another one to the beak in a nasty uppercut when I did. I dropped my rifle, not by choice, which was kind of stupid looking back. Hindsight is always 20/20. I countered with a leg kick followed by another to the liver, which he shrugged off like last time.
Well, it's clear fighting normally doesn't work. Guess I'll just have to fight dirty.
I jabbed at his face, blocked another punch, and scooped up some dirt with my leg to throw in his eyes. It worked, he was blinded for half a second, and I kicked him in the face. Straight in the eye socket, too. That's gotta hurt. I'd feel bad if he wasn't such an asshole.
He stumbled backwards a few steps and reached in the van for a weapon. Wait a minute. I have a gun, too! I was practically surrounded by them.
I grabbed the rifle on the ground with my leg, shooting out Heval's legs in the process. He fell and rolled, pistol in paw, but I kicked it away and tossed the rifle up to my wings. I caught it and leveled it at his head. "You give?"
Heval looked to his right. Sevros sat pressed against the far end of the van, looking positively terrified. Hell, I couldn't blame him. "Does he give up?" I asked. Sevros was too afraid to answer.
"Fine, then." I kicked Heval in the face, then a paw swept my other leg and I fell. Another paw grabbed my rifle, he jumped on top of me and pinned my wing under his leg, and then he started choking my lights out. It all took, like, three seconds, too. God damn, that guy is good. Next time, I'm just shooting him.
If there was a next time. Judging by where I was at the moment, there probably wouldn't be.
I tried clawing at his liver, but his other paw grabbed my wing and held it tight to the ground. I was effectively paralyzed, and I couldn't do anything about it either. I probably didn't have much air left, too, now that I thought about it. My lungs were starting to hurt.
"This time, I'll finish the goddamn job," he snarled. Whatever snappy retort I would've made died pretty quickly in my airless throat. Choking to death was really not a good way to die.
Well, none of them are really good ways to die. This one just sucks more than most.
I clawed at what I assumed was Heval's hamstring, then his wrist, but that didn't do much more than make him mad. Plus, I was really running out of air, and he was bleeding on my legs from where I shot him.
Yeah, that's going to be a problem. Venlil blood is impossible to get out of your feathers these days.
To add insult to injury, or injury to insult, he pinned my wing with his leg and started punching me in the goddamn face. That was never a good thing to be on the receiving end of.
"Just-" punch "You-" punch "Die-" punch "You-" punch "Little-" I didn't hear what came next. That was probably because I was running out of oxygen.
Well, I figure nobody lives forever. As lives go, I think I've had a good one so far. I have no regrets.
Well, maybe a few, but nobody's perfect.
A gunshot. One. The grip on my throat slackened. I sprang into action, locking us together and rolling on top of him, but it really wasn't necessary.
Heval was dead. "Well, I see you were busy today," Isola's voice came from behind me.
"Whatever they're paying me, it's not brahking enough." I really wasn't sure on that end. My salary, if you included all the bonuses I got from putting in work and subtracted all the deductions I got for not being a head-up-my-ass brain-dead robot like I was supposed to, was never that consistent.
"Now, as to this bitch," I gestured toward Sevros, who was shooting a glare at me. "Come on, Isola." I stood up, unarmed for now. It really didn't matter, though, because it was over. I had won.
You know what? Screw it. I'm throwing the most kickass party once I get back. I deserve it.
"Isola?" Sevros asked. Yeah, that's what I said. I'm so glad you're not going deaf. There was the faintest glimmer of hope on his features for a moment. Does he know someone else named Isola? What? Then she stepped into his view, gun held sideways at his head, and his expression switched to sheer and utter confusion. "What? Why?"
Not terror, that came later. Confusion. Betrayal, almost. Hope at hearing her name, then confusion at seeing her point a gun at his face. Why would he be confused? "Put these cuffs on," said Isola, tossing him a pair. He just stammered gibberish. Why would he be confused?
"I gave you what you wanted."
Six words, and everything fell down.
Six words filled in six hundred blanks.
Oh, hell.
Isola's the spy.
I wheeled, quick, but Isola was quicker. She jabbed an injector to my neck and I went down like a brick. Paralyzed. Can't move a muscle. Pretty uncomfortable spot to be paralyzed in, too. "Don't worry," she said, "The drug won't last long, but you've got bigger problems than that."
"Why?" I choked out. That took way more effort than it should have.
"He offered to free my brother from the facility. Made good on the deal, too."
Oh. Well, at least the motivation makes sense.
Really, I was in shock from this whole thing. I couldn't even bring myself to get angry, I was so surprised. Even with everything spelled out in front of me, with the evidence of her crimes as clear as a Nishtal sunrise, a part of me still didn't believe it was real.
I silenced that part. It was very clearly wrong.
Isola sold me out. She sold us all out. How many people died for one brahking Yotul?
When I got my claws on her and Onsel, it wouldn't be pretty. I could swear by that much.
"Unfortunately, he blabbed before I could get to him," Isola explained. I knew that! Sevros started yelling something about 'upholding the deal', and Isola turned and shot him three times.
Or, at least, I thought she did. My view wasn't all too great from being face down on the ground. Isola must've guessed that, too, because she at least had the kindness to flip me around. "I really didn't want to do this, you know. I'm sorry that it had to be this way."
She aimed her gun at my head. I still couldn't move one bit. "You're an exterminator. Think of this as justice." She's trying to justify it. To who? Me, or her?
I didn't beg. I didn't cry. I didn't scream, nor did I close my eyes and wait. It would be better to see the end coming. "I'm sorry, Jelim," she said, gun unwavering in her paw as she spoke. She didn't look very sorry.
"No witnesses."

2024.05.02 18:27 Dizzy_Try4939 My partner's cleaning standards are awful

My partner is amazing. He is incredibly responsible and generous in so many ways in our relationship. But simply put, he is a complete slob and I despair over the fact that I will spend my life living with his filthy habits. By the way we are both approaching 40.
Most of our fights are about the same thing: how much time I spend cleaning and how little time he spends on it. We've devised several lists and charts to keep him on track with his chores: doing dishes once a week (I do them every day), cleaning the bathroom once a week (for him this means only the toilet and sink, I do the rest), and vacuuming once a week. Altogether this would eat up no more than an hour of his week, but after two weeks none of it matters, he goes back to his usual habits of doing just about nothing.
He is genuinely trying to be better, but he literally does not see mess and it drives me nuts. A dirty toilet looks the same as a clean one to him. I don't understand it, and my sympathy for his condition has about run out. The only way to get him to consistently clean is for me to directly tell him to clean something and how, and make him do it in the moment, or he will forget. I hate that I have to nag him like he is a child to simply spend 10 minutes a week helping us keep our space clean. I hate that I am the only one keeping an eye on the household and planning meals and cleaning. If I don't stay on top of it I live in filth. If I don't meal plan and make time in my day to cook, we eat carrots and chips for dinner.
I recently came back from a 9 day vacation to find the dishes I had washed before I left still on the drying rack. The dishes were piled high in the sink and on the counters. I spent two days working through them and at the bottom of the pile I found my beloved cast iron, rusting and full of rotten meat scraps. He literally didn't clean once during the time I was gone and I spent many hours catching up trying to get the place in decent shape before I even unpacked.
There are a few spaces in his life that have been "his spaces" and not mine and I therefore don't comment on them until I reach my breaking point. One of these is his car. When it got to the point where being the passenger meant sitting ankle-deep in trash, and kicking trash out of the car each time I got in and out, which I then I had to get out and retrieve and put back in the car...then I finally asked him to clean it out. He is also not allowed to use the mugs in our house because he will bring them in his car to work and forget about them until he has a stash of 12 mugs full of mold stashed around his car. He uses semi-disposable cups for coffee now. He can't own thermoses because he will forget them and they will mold.
Another space is the office at his family's outbuilding that is his remote workspace. I avoided visiting him there if possible. He never once cleaned it. Every surface is piled with papers, old mugs, crumpled receipts, etc etc and most of the floor is taken up with random junk, boxes, baskets, clocks that don't. work, random shoes, endless crap. It shocks me that he thinks it's okay to keep a space he is being generously allowed to use in such a condition. He was recently asked to clean it up by his family members. It took him about 6 hours. Tidying my office takes me about 4 minutes tops.
Finally, his other office. We bought a house and have been renting it out but he keeps an office in the laundry room. He has never cleaned it in 2 years. Under the desk and in the corners there are these eddies of dirt, literally piles of dirt and peanut shells and trash and objects that may have once been useful (sponges, pencils, handkerchiefs) that are now dirty and broken from being on the floor and stepped on. There are power tools everywhere on the ground and plenty of stuff to trip over. The trash can has no liner and is literally piled high with a tower of trash that he keeps adding stuff to, which falls off creating a whole pond of trash. The pond of trash happens to be right in front of the washer and dryer that the renters use. This was a SHARED SPACE that the renters used to do their laundry. I am extremely alarmed that he sees nothing wrong with keeping a shared space in this condition. When I bring it up to him, he acts defensive and makes me "take ownership of my feelings" and be clear that I want it cleaned, like it's some particular need of mine to not exist in pure squalor.
I can't make him see that this is completely unacceptable and disrespectful to those he shares spaces with. He insists on this being just a difference between us, like "well we each have our opinions." No. There comes a point at which a space is actively dysfunctional and you are destroying your actual things due to this dysfunction.
I also hate how bad he is at caring for his stuff. Multiple times he has ruined furniture, dishes, etc. by leaving them out in the rain, rotting in a garage, or in a pile of garbage. I hate that we then end up with piles of crap we have to take to the dump.

2024.05.02 17:54 unworthy-1 It doesn't matter...

It doesn't matter how hard you try or how many times you repeatedly get knocked down and crawl back up onto the proverbial horse. Pulling yourself up by your boot straps and facing another day is all for nothing. There aren't any truly good people in this world. From my experience, everyone lies, cheats, steals, manipulates and strives to take advantage of others consistently. We are slaves to work. We are slaves to money. We are slaves to the never-ending task of eating. Even that has increased monetarily and countless people die of starvation, even in the USA. The vast majority eat junk food, because healthy food is too expensive. Our health is declinijg as a result. We work through our best, most productive hours each day. However, those hours are usually spent making another company succeed or fail....not us individually. The cost of living is sky rocketing and even as minimum wage is rising to $15/hr, that's woefully inadequate for even basic survival. We hide incessantly in any form of entertainment we can find. That's why musicians, actors/actresses and athletes are treated like God's. They give us an escape from hell...temporarily. We reward them with millions of dollars as a result. The suicide rate amongst these "God's of society" is staggering. Even they are secretly miserable. We can't see the cancer, because it surrounds us and we've grown accusotmed to the stage 4 illness. Our young children are in daycare and raised by other people, while we give our heart and minds to an industry that could care less about our well being and feed on their own villainous greed. Our kids suffer, society suffers and everyday seems like a total waste of time and energy. We are all slowly dying in an endless cycle of chaos. We are taught that it's normal and just go with the flow. We are taught to put our own needs aside and help others, when nobody helps us on return. Religion and spirituality are both lies of the highest order. We all live a pathetic life, that's mostly empty and void of true joy...and then we die. Everyone dies. Nothing matters. Aside from technological advances, society is declining at a rapid pace. All of our hard work is for nothing. All of our carefully chosen words and diligent actions propell society into the mud. Women are taught that they lack beauty and the cosmetic industry makes trillions of dollars from actively clawing out the self esteem of women, so they are now dependent on their product. Little girls are lied to and before they can even think for themselves, they are catapulted into a lie that this world embraces. They watch their mothers fall helplessly into the trap the world has set. They in turn mirror that dehavior. They dawn eye liner, lip stick mascara, blush, hair color and various other make up components to construct their self esteem...because society has eagerly stripped them of it voluntarily (for the vast accumulation of money). That is sickening and revolting. Young men and women are filtered through the military. They suffer mental anguish and war. They suffer from untold stories of P.T.S.D. so this country can stay corrupt and vile. The government couldn't care less about the wounded, the dead and the mental suffering...as long as they get their billion dollar defense contracts. This world has no ethics, no morals and no real sense of direction. We are all thrown into the fire from birth. So...yeah, it doesn't matter. We are all just fuel for the fire. The smoke slowly disappears and the ashes of our valiant efforts are left behind. It's all for nothing. The lie that life is worth living, might be the biggest one out there. They want you to keep living, because you're a cow in the pasture. The top 1% need the dedicated sacrifice of their "cattle" to fund their luxurious lifestyles. If you commit suicide, they lose money from all the things you're addicted to. It's one less hand stuffing their pockets. So, they need you to stay alive. Life is not worth living. Life is simply a dirty joke perpetuated on the masses. I could keep going, but hopefully you see my point....it doesn't matter anyway.

2024.05.02 15:39 DMerceless Guardian, Ludonarrative Dissonance, and Lessons That Could Be Learned From the 4e Fighter

With all the recent conversation about Guardian, it's interesting to me how controversial everything about it seems to be. Some people think the class only need minor adjustments, others think it should be burned to the ground and reworked from scratch. Some think Taunt is useless, others think it's the best thing mankind ever created. Jest-y hyperboles aside, I started trying to figure out why such radically different experiences, and I think I arrived at something. Maybe.
What is a Tank?
Defining the word "tank" or similar terms such as "defender" has always been hard. There's been plenty of discussion over the years, memes, and even a Tank Alignment Chart for a reason. You can generally get people to agree that a tank needs to be sturdy and have a way to make people actually want to attack them, but get past that and things get really blurry.
Does a true tank need to be able to endure the entire opposing force beating on them continuously? Well that certainly sounds cool as hell but almost impossible to make work in a TTRPG scenario. Do they need to be able to tank single target bosses? Minions? Both? How directly do their abilities need to work in terms of making people want to hit you? These are all questions you'll get wildly different answers for.
But there are some interesting patterns to look at.
Narrative vs Mechanical Reality
You are the shield, the steel wall that holds back the tide of deadly force exhibited by enemies great and small.
When you open the Guardian class, this is the first sentence you see. If you look at everything else, from Irabeth's art to the feat names and ability descriptions, they all seem to paint about the same picture: you are the toughest, bravest bastard around. That means you'll be in the frontlines, smacking people's heads and taunting the scariest enemies so they keep focusing you, right? Right, Anakin?
Well... no. Right now, that doesn't seem to be a good way to play a Guardian. Being in the frontline means you can't Intercept for your squishies, and taunting a boss monster is almost suicide. Hampering Sweeps, as broken as it is, is currently the main way to make that playstyle viable, but the rest of Guardian's kit doesn't lend itself to that at all.
If you play as a mid-liner who stays very close or even adjacent to your squshies, and only use Taunt on enemies that are either too weak to be a threat to you but could be one to your allies, or that are positioned in a way that they can't attack you properly, everything starts clicking better. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. Is it as good as a Champion? I don't think so either. But at least it's functional. If you see your Guardian as a tactician, a sort of defensive analogue to the Commander who will play dirty or even cowardly when needed to win, it's a decent class.
The issue is: a lot of people, myself included, don't want to play this class like that. It's very far from the fantasy we're looking for.
The weapon proficiency/specialization weirdness ultimately comes down to a similar issue. The idea of a martial with bad weapon progression that uses Strikes as a last resort is definitely not unworkable, but how much does it really fit a "heavily armored warrior" class? At which point do you start asking yourself why the class is even a martial and not some kind of pure skill monkey/tank or a dedicated Grappler?
A New (Combat) Challenger
The 4e Fighter, later renamed Weaponmaster due to Essentials shenanigans, was a very controversial class on release. No, not because of people calling it overpowered. Wrong game. It was controversial because 4e made the Fighter an explicit Defender, with martial damage-dealing roles going to the Rogue, Ranger and later on the Barbarian instead. Anyone who actually played 4e for long knows that the Fighter dealt a shit ton of damage anyway, but I digress. This is just a fun piece of history not too related to the main point.
Fighter's main thing was a feature called Combat Challenge, which was basically two features in one. I'll be paraphrasing because I don't want the Pinkertons at my doorstep:
The first part of Combat Challenge was a passive. Whenever you attacked someone, regardless of hitting or missing, they were Marked for one round. That means they have a -2 on all attacks that don't include you as the target or one of the targets. Every Defender had a Mark ability, but Fighter's was unique in being tied to your attacks instead of an ability you had to activate.
The second part was a reactive power. As an Immediate Interrupt (in PF2 terms, that would be a Reaction that is resolved before the triggering action), you can smack someone who tries to Shift (Step) away from you or ignore your Mark and still attack an ally anyway.
Both abilities are extremely simple, but just by reading them you know exactly what you're supposed to be doing as this class. You go to whoever seems the most threatening to your party, your smack their ass, and you don't let them attack your friends properly. If they try anyway, you punish them for it. Though there was also some nuance. For example: with the way Fighter's Mark worked, it completely flipped the usual script for targeting. In almost every turn-based RPG, you want to focus all your attacks on one target to kill them as fast as possible. If Fighter had a multi-attack power, though, there was a big incentive to spread out the attacks as that was one of the only ways of Marking multiple people.
They also had another feature called Combat Superiority, which made your Attacks of Opportunity gain a bonus to hit and stop enemy movement if they do hit. That one is less relevant for us, but it rounded out their kit nicely.
Challenging Lessons
I'll preface this by saying that I don't think 4e Fighter is a perfect class, or that Guardian should be a copy of it. That said, there are some places where I believe the former succeeds and the latter not as much.
First of all, Weaponmaster did the Tough-Ass Protective Warrior fantasy like no other. Everything about their mechanics incentivized you to be as much on people's faces as possible. While other Defenders like Swordmage and Paladin would sometimes prefer staying a bit back and using their allies as bait, playing cowardly was (almost) never a good option for Fighter.
Second, your Mark was tied to your attacks, which gave you a great reason to be "the martial defender". Attacking enemies was never a selfish act, because by doing so you were also helping your team.
And lastly, their kit was extremely cohesive and intuitive. Combat Challenge's active abiltiy fed into its passive, and Combat Superiority was there in case they try to ignore both by running away. You were a walking catch-22 for enemies, which I think the PF2 Champion also achieves really well, but Guardian not so much. Their abilities feel like a set of mostly unrelated tools, and there are some situations that don't seem very well covered by any of them (like protecting a melee ally against a boss enemy).
Conclusion
Again, the point of this post is not that we should turn Guardian into a hyper-aggressive tank and ditch what it's trying to do right now entirely, but I feel like it's not exactly resonating with what myself and many others would expect from the fantasy. The fact that so many seem to not even get it and end up "playing it the wrong way" says a lot.
I think the tactical protector who taunts from far away and wiggles themselves into putting enemies in bad positions is a valid fantasy, but I'd also like to see more incentive to do the frontliner thingy in the core chassis instead of a single busted feat. I'd like the mechanics to tie into each other to serve a gameplan better, and more intuitively. I'd like the Guardian to be better at using weapons, and then be given utility-based incentives to attack enemies, just like the Commander has, so it feels more like a martial class.

2024.04.27 19:24 RedShiftedTime I've been thinking about getting rid of my S2000....

I guess there's not really a reason to make this post, but here I am anyways.
I got my 2001 Sebring Silver AP1 S2000 back in 2018, purchased with cash, 114k miles for $8,000, from a guy that said he was trying to buy a condo and needed the cash. The car was internally perfect, but the exterior was a bit rough.
The fender liners were missing, there was a crack in the front bumper, there was a bummy aftermarket radio, the idle was kind of rough, various rock chips all over, and a tear in the vinyl roof. It wasn't big or noticeable, and this was one of my dream cars from being a kid, for what I believed was a ridiculously good price. The title was also a rebuilt title, because I guess it was totaled out from a rear end accident and repaired, but the panels don't show any evidence of frame damage, all the gaps are correct. Also, the clutch felt like it slipped pretty badly, but I was planning on doing a full and complete service, because this was going to be my baby.
I still have some parts that need to go in the car, specifically, I have the AP2 valve lifter and retainer replacements that are recommended since the OEM AP1 ones can crack, but this would require disassembling the top of the engine....and I don't have a garage to do this in if I can't get it done in a day.
I'm not sure.
I have been driving it a lot more recently in the warm weather, and it feels...I don't know....sort of depressing. I can't drive it year round where I live, we get snow about 4-6 months of the year. I just want to clarify, I still love the car, but the idle issue mentioned earlier is still not gone for some reason, and I'm not sure what else could be the issue. I feel like I've given up fixing it. When I'm at idle and the engine has warmed up, if there is any additional load on the engine from the alternator or AC compressor, it will drop and shudder something terrible before the RPMs recover to normal. It also doesn't move when it's in the "friction zone" with just the clutch, unless I'm in reverse (???). Sometimes it will just straight up die when I'm not giving enough gas to take off on a slight incline. Never had a single check engine light.
I've really only been driving it more because I recently bought a new 2023 EV6 GT off the lot last April with 6 miles....and after owning it for a year, I just hate it, but it's so far underwater it's ridiculous. Thankfully I chose to lease it, instead of purchase, but I'm still stuck with it for another 2 years. I've been driving the S2k more to keep miles off the Kia so I end up with a ton of equity on lease turn-in.
The thing is...the S2000 is just....so slow. I mean, it drives great when it's going. But that hole I mentioned in the vinyl rooftop is the size of a softball now, and only getting bigger. And there's more tears appearing. A new soft top used to be only $400 some, now they're almost $1,000. And I'd have to pay a shop to install it, I don't have any of the tools or know-how to replace it. And recently it feels like 2nd gear is going, it takes some effort to get that into gear, maybe it's just a bad syncro, but that will still cost a lot to fix too. I still haven't gotten new fender liners. The wheels are pretty dirty. I think there's some bird poop on it I just haven't bothered to clean off. I just feel bad. I put so much love into it, and it doesn't feel like it's loving me back. Maybe that's stupid. It's still my dream car from when I was a kid. I wanted it to be perfect, or make it perfect. And I still haven't gotten around to fixing the paint...or the front bumper crack. I just don't know what to do, I don't need to get rid of it, I have no clue what I would replace it with. A Porsche? I've mulled an RS3 but they're so expensive. I really don't want to not have a convertible, after I got rid of my motorcycle (YZF R6), top down is the next best thing. I don't really want to buy into a new car. I own the S2000.
What do you all think? I would appreciate some discussion about it....maybe it's a waste of time, maybe I'm just rambling. I would keep it and get another vehicle but I don't have space for 4 cars (my 2 plus my wife's). Maybe I should get another motorcycle.....

2024.04.27 13:26 IsoCally A possible new direction for an ACW that still happens and would be more interesting.

I had a fever dream in which I imagined the USA lead up to the American Civil War being reworked to this concept. I admit fully I cannot program it, nor did I particularly re-write the lore, and it may not be very good besides.
Note I use USA instead of FEDs throughout this.
Here is my idea:
ACW: The premise isn't that there isn't four parties. It's that the CSA has infiltrated the Republicans, and Huey Long's every man a king cult has created problems for the democrats, and they are trying to initiate a hostile take-over of the Democrats.
Choose Party at Start: Democrats or Republicans.
Repubs have Theo. Roosevelt Jr set up to run as president 1936.
He has a huge scandal. Republicans are doomed if they run him. And they may be doomed anyway. This is the equivalent of the Teapot Dome scandal, only pushed back to 1936 at the worst possible time.
They must choose a new candidate, Olson, Alf Landon, or Herbert Hoover, for an unprecedented third term.
  1. If Hoover is picked, the syndicalists revolt. They have enough support from fed up republicans to put forth their own candidate: John Jack Reed. His VP will be Quentin Roosevelt as a show of a nod toward the old order. (He makes a good show of tearing down his brother in public and still has a good image, not being involved in the scandal at all, similar to FDR, though in a quicker time frame.)
  2. If Olson is picked, he will attempt to approach the Democrats for a combined run ticket, with John Nance Garner as VP. If selected, the election is only Republican Olson vs. Democrat Huey Long.
  3. If Landon is picked, he chooses unassuming Norman Thomas as his VP to satisfy the syndicalist republicans. There is acceptance from the syndicalists, but some nervousness from the others.
Democrats always run John Nance Garner as a Business Southerner with the best chance against Long, but Long has a trick up his sleeve. Garner will have to play a minigame against Long, or Long will steal control of the democrat party and votes for the democrats go to Long instead. There is no way to play as 'Long,' in this game the player has to choose to play as Long in the civil war start. Or there's a 'secret path' where Huey Long can become the HoS of the USA.
The election campaign begins: a little minigame.
It rotates between campaigning, heading off other campaigns, and attempting to stop Huey Long from accomplishing dirty tricks. Huey Long is treated like the 'fail state' guy in the German run for the conservatives. If he gets too much power, watch out.
In the end, it comes down to several outcomes and percentage points represented as regions in the minigame, as well as a percentage point for Huey Long's influence. Here are the possible results:
  1. If Huey Long's is forced out of the party (his influence reaches negative or 0%) or his dirty tricks are under a particular threshold while the democrats control enough regions, the Democrats win.
  2. If the Republicans get more control than the democrats, then they win. The republicans don't need to worry about Huey Long as long as he doesn't take over the Democrat party outright, though they can spend PP to help the democrats fend him off if they're feeling generous, because they can see the "Huey Long's infiltration of the Democrat party," minigame bar, too. The republicans must take more regions but don't have to concentrate so much on Huey Long's infiltration. Therefore, it's easiest to play as Olson, since then they don't need to worry about a Long fail-state at all. Long is the Democrat candidate and the minigame is only about campaigning and undermining influence. (This can lead to a 'secret path'.)
  3. If Huey Long gets too much power over the democrats, he will create mass confusion by declaring himself the leader of the Democrat party and its true candidate. He will set up and pressure democrat electors to vote for him instead of Garner. This will cause so much confusion that the 12th amendment kicks in when the election is done. If this happens, the player can pick if the Democrats or Republicans win, but at a huge stability/political power hit that will hit the USA during the war. "Huey Long undermined the constitution," or something. (This can potentially be advantageous if you want to play a CSA though.
Whatever party gets in power, the ACW will occur. The only thing that matters is which party got into the White House. That determines who has the advantage and can get the advantages.
  1. If the Democrats win, they will try to suppress Long and compromise with the Republicans. They'll deal with a series of choices that can hold off disaster. Meanwhile, focuses for planning militarily for the war can be taken. Since Garner is the only choice, this is the most straight-forward, contrasting with the Republican game. They have a timer that indicates "Both Syndicalists and Longists are fed up."
If the Republicans win, it depends on which faction won:
  1. If the Olson-ites won, they can make decisions to try to undermine Huey Long's influence, while dealing with a gauge called "Huey Long's impatience" which can only be dealt with by passing legislation he likes. Eventually this will fail because he will draw a line in the sand and say "Pass Every Man a King, or it's over!" There's no way to stop the clock from running out.
  2. If Landon won, they have a minigame about how to pacify Huey and the Democrats while maintaining the alliance between the syndicalists and the rank and file republicans. Due to Landon and Thomas's conciliatory nature, there is no military planning focuses. They can instead lower Huey Long's influence and the military's influence by attracting his followers that 'Every Man a King' is basically a syndicalist plan, and Long wants a militaristic coup that will destroy American lives. The timer is: "Kick out the syndicalists, or we riot!"
  3. If Reed's faction won, they have a minigame which is set between "campaign for Syndicalist values and programs" that can be set in various states. Or they can actively sabotage the US military, removing mils and stockpiles the USA will get later. The "campaigning" choices will make sure that states flip to Syndicalist. The army choices weaken the USA military. They have two 'time down clocks', either 'hard liners demand we pass syndicalist legislation!' or 'the military is catching on to our sabotage!' The war will be faster for them as there's two time-limit bars to monitor.
Then there's the Kingfish, which is sort of a 'secret path' because it involves Olson losing.
If Huey Long won via getting him as the democrat candidate via Olson's grand bargain, and then the republicans losing to him, Huey Long has the simplest minigame. He has one timer. He has 'purge disloyal democrats' on one side, and 'subvert gridlock' on the other. Each press lowers democrat control, meaning more states will flip to him at war start. These presses do not cost political power, they lower the time clock. When the time clock is zero, he gets the event "Disloyal democrats are gone! The supreme court is subverted! Pass every man a King!" He has focuses to persuade/bully the military into joining him (Get southern generals like Patton, who will otherwise go to another faction), scale back the clock a little, and use the justice department to purge syndicalist influence, hurting the CSA.
So, here are the results:
  1. Huey Long won: A four-way war. Huey Long attempts to pass his bill but an entire revolt breaks up, with even his 'loyal' democrats revolting. He orders the military to step in, and depending on how many generals he got on his side, they either take Washington DC and Virginia or force Long to flee back to just his usual states. The most potential to make the AUS into a powerhouse from day one by getting the military and taking territory on the AUS's side, while also weakening the USA and CSA.
  2. John Nancer Garner won: A three way war. Democrats, vs CSA and AUS. If Garner passed enough focuses and decision that allowed them to prepare militarily: Douglas MacArthur becomes the HoS. The idea is ostensibly Garner is the Commander-in-Chief, but he is going into an undisclosed location and delegated all power to MacArthur to defend the Union. MacArthur's orders are Garner's orders in absententia. At the end of the war, Douglas MacArthur will ALWAYS step down and bring back Garner, who is very much alive. USA starts militarily the strongest.
  3. Olson won: Two way war. USA vs. AUS. The more they undermined the AUS, the less states flip. But the AUS gets military bonuses and generals, leaving the USA weak militarily at first.
  4. Landon and Thomas won: Three way war. CSA vs USA and AUS. However, in a switch, the CSA faction has rallied around Landon and Thomas as the 'true presidents', with the notion that Landon and Thomas have proven that worker and capitalist can work together in calm, pacifistic, conciliatory unity. They have the best capacity to sandwich in the USA and then destroy a weak AUS, but the trade off is the USA and AUS are stronger militarily, so they're hoping the USA and AUS fight each other first. If this is the result, Douglas MacArthur will become the HoS of the USA. If the USA wins, MacArthur will take power as a dictator, disillusioned with American democracy and outright betrayal of the president. When the CSA wins, the CSA becomes the USA again, and the Midwest starts out cored and pacified. (If you lost to the Long Failstate, it follows you to the CSA in this path.)
  5. Reed and Quentin Roosevelt win: Four way war. The CSA has the most capacity to weaken the USA and spread to acquire the most core states to start. This has the trade off that they can be overextended. Quentin Roosevelt will flee and become HoS of the USA, with the rather stupid justification that John Jack Reed 'died' when he betrayed America, making Roosevelt who was the VP now the President. His rallying cry is "Where's Reed now? I don't see him anywhere. He must be dead, so I'm president. ...And if, in fact, Reed is not dead now, he sure soon will be!" - (From what we know about Quentin's personality, he was reckless and sorta acted on impulse, though jovial. So this makes a lot more sense than partnering him with Olson.)
Disclaimer that the NE can develop normally.
And here we have the basis for a new way the ACW can develop. Rather convoluted, and I can't say I'm qualified at programming any of this, but I wanted to present it as a 'brainstorm'. Especially with keeping the general 'feel' or 'vibe' of the current ACW as still true in a rework. MacArthur can still be HoS, but it requires real effort, and you have to decide if you want him as a civilian HoS or as a dictator HoS before the fact. No weird "he just chooses one."
I'll admit, there's nothing about the PSA or NE, but they're more an afterthought and should only exist as something for the CSA or AUS to mop up or for Canada to support.

2024.04.26 18:08 Future_Ad_3485 Paranormal Inc. Part Eleven: A Gorgon of a Day!

Finishing up the last corpse from yesterday’s job, Morte decayed the bodies. Miles bounced downstairs as I was chucking my dirty gloves into the trash can, his body smashing into my legs. Dragging him over to the sink, he chatted my ears off as I washed my hands. Sliding off my white examiner’s coat, my rockabilly scarlet dress hugged my torso wonderfully while floating away from my hips in a lovely manner. Tugging on my worn leather gloves, Miles reached for me. Scooping him up with a big smile, his arms draped over my neck. Silent tears danced down my cheeks, memories of me holding my girls back then flashed in my mind. Sunlight danced over us, a rare moment of serenity coming over me. A golden envelope hitting my head snapped me back to reality, my brow cocking at the inconvenient summoning. Opening it up with my free hand, an unfamiliar name greeted me. Who the hell was Sorgona? Carrying him to the office, the piles had been organized into new filing cabinets. Tracing my fingers along the tops, the letters caught my eyes. Ripping open the drawer, the file I needed floated into the air. Catching it in my palm, Miles snuggled into me harder the moment we crashed into my worn leather chair. Flipping through the pages, her mother had been Medusa. Curiosity twinkled in my eyes at the prospect of a secret daughter, Morte letting himself in.
“Today is going to be us and us alone. Apparently our plans to hold the fort down fell through.” He mumbled bitterly, his hard expression softening in Miles’ direction. “Miles, we have to work but we will be back by dinner.” Shooting out a quick okay, one final squeeze had me stunned as he bounced into Cal’s arms. Thanking him silently, my fingers curled around the bag holding the half finished bunny. Tossing me my leather coat, his fingers drummed on the top of his scythe. Groaning as I rose to my feet, Morte noted my tears. Kissing the tears away, nothing needed to be said. Plucking the file from the desk, his elbow hooked around mine. Guiding me to the hearse, the door groaned open. Popping in, the door shutting back blew any loose strands of hair back. Clicking on my seat belt, my attention shifted to his bunny. Stitching away as he climbed into the hearse, his sad smile lingered on me as the engine roared to life.
“Why do you insist on torturing yourself by making him one? Bad memories will only haunt you.” He asked with pressed lips, his hand cupping mine. “Don’t shoot me for requesting this of you! Do you mind having another child with me after all of this madness is over?” Stunned by his words, his other hand fell onto my flat stomach.
“I don’t see why not. It would be nice to give them a little brother or sister.” I returned with a busted smile, his finger lifting up my chin. Kissing my lips tenderly, time slowed down. Our heartbeats drummed in our ears, the sounds rushing in the moment he ended his spell. Cupping my cheek, his lips grazed against my forehead. Rumbling forward, the needle moved swiftly in and out of the fabric. Humming to himself, songs from our time filled the hearse. Smiling softly to myself, a memory played out in my mind.
Staring down at my large bump, the candles burned bright as I continued to stitch the twins’ bunnies. Rubbing the rough gray wool, winter had an extra bite this year. Morte came in with a deer, his deep voice humming those same sweet notes. Setting the gutted deer on the table, his shadow danced along the wall. Kissing my bump feverishly, his wild hair was a far cry from his style today. Silent tears stained my cheeks, his lips moving. Torn by the lack of words hitting my ears, a loud ringing had my ears pinning back. Snakes hissed in the distance, the snakes seeming to be attached to a pale female head. Covering my eyes, a slinky dress brushed against my skin. Chills ran up my spin, scales meeting my paling face. Clammy sweat beaded on my brow, a gloved hand reaching down into my lap. Fingers snapping ripped her away, the scene fading out.
Sucking in a deep breath, a sleek outdoor club had music booming. A migraine throbbed to life, Morte seemed to have his arm deep within a leather bag. Tossing me the Gothic version of Jessica Rabbit’s dress, scarlet silk gloves dangled off of his palm. Climbing into the back to get changed, my previous outfit hit the floor of my hearse with a thud. Sliding on the new dress, two slits allowed my legs to move. Fussing with the low cut sweetheart neckline, my breasts were one wrong spin from falling out. Snatching my gloves from his hand, wonder mixed with shock at his designer scarlet suit. Yanking them on, bright neon lights flooded into the back the moment Morte ripped it open. Helping me out, his steady hands slid a garter up my right thigh. A magically hidden case caught my eyes as he dropped my dagger into it. Undoing my bun, perfect waves floated down my back. His fingers played with my hair. Tugging me close to his hips, hunger burned in his eyes. A throat cleared, Cloak appeared over our head in a lacy black body con dress. Black heels shimmered on her feet, her fingers pointing towards my beat up boots. Tossing me a scarlet pair of heels, a quiet fuck tumbled from my lips while my shaking hands exchanged the shoes. Digging the thin heel into the dirt, these damn things would be a hindrance. Draping her arms over my shoulders, her grin widened with true bliss.
“Don’t worry about my task. Like a good sister, I finished early. Let’s kick some ass.” She whispered gleefully in my ear, my eyes lingering on the nearly finished stuffed bunny. “Dang, that is so cute. Maybe you can make me a stuffed cat.” Hurt dimmed my eyes, her arms dropping to her side. Those stuffed animals held bittersweet memories, my hand waving around striking away any concern. Getting into line, demons and gods of all sorts were gabbing away around us. Staring into the sea of fairy lights and granite bars, statues lined the sea of colorful flowers. A tin roof hung over the important parts, the rest of the business seeming to be left in the open. A woman with a black silk head wrap and sparkling sunglasses made her way to the bar, her slender hands fussing with the slinky violet dress. Placing her hands on her hip, her creepy green lips curled to reveal snake fangs. Croak shifted uncomfortably behind me, her fingers digging into my arms. No fear showed in my eyes, this foul creature meeting me already. Donning a wicked grin, her slender fingers lifted up the velvet rope.
“Come on in, you crazy freaks!” She shouted with some sort of battle cry, everyone filing in. Burying ourselves into the crowd, the scents covered ours. Piling onto the marble dance floor, the three of us hid behind one of the many statues to avoid detection. Flashing through the images of the victims, shock rounded my eyes at the matching outfit. Yanking Morte down by the collar of his suit, scarlet painted my cheeks at how close she was. Pretending to kiss the nape of his neck, a deep crimson rose to his cheeks at how we looked.
“Is there any way to return humans back to normal or is this a way to free them with her death sort of solution?” I growled through gritted teeth with pure fury burning in my eyes, his shoulders shrugging. Wut popped up behind us, a sly grin twitching on his lips. Stifling a laugh, a glowing milk jug spun in his palm.
“While you two love birds were about to go at it, I am going to sprinkle the poor victims while you create a distraction.” He announced nonchalantly, my lips twitching into a wicked smirk. “Don’t give me that look.” Pushing us into the spotlight, daggers shot in my eyes in his direction. The music died down, Sorgona rising to her feet ominously, dirt crunching as I stumbled back. Tearing off her hair wrap, snakes hissed to life. The attendees disappeared in puffs of smoke and ribbons, the battle had been intentionally started. Flipping off Wut, the statues were becoming human once more. Kicking my dagger out of its case, a couple of kicks had the heels sliding across the dirt. So much for coming up with a plan, Croak disappearing from the corner of my eyes. Morte hit the dirt, a bleeding snake bite catching my eyes. Panic rounded my eyes, Wut picking up on the situation. Popping up next to me, his arms scooped up Morte.
“Don’t worry. He is in good hands with me.” He promised me while running off with victims. Mixed emotions had me paralyzed in my spot, his life force floating off of him. Silent tears stained my cheeks, Sorgona beginning to lift up her sunglasses. Raising my foot over my head, a shadowy ball built around my heel. Smashing it into the dirt, shadowy spikes burst from the ground. Wincing in pain, a dull crack announced my broken heel. Missing my boots, those things were fortified for my amplified strength. Limping behind a couple spikes, I lifted my blade enough to see where she was coming from. Violet eyes glowed in the distance, my shadow snakes slithering down my arms to my broken heel. Creating a makeshift boot, something else seemed off. Mirrors rose from the flower beds, Croak waving on top of one of my spikes. Skidding down, a couple of flips had her next to me. Bouncing her blade against her legs, her hot breath bathed my neck upon her leaning close to me. Watching our target in the reflection of my blade, the color drained from my face at how close she was getting.
“What do you need me to do, Love?” She inquired with a cheerful chuckle, her hand lingering on my shoulders. “Don’t worry your little head, dear. Wut probably has him cured by now.” Hoping that she was right, an idea had a Cheshire Cat Grin on my lips. Wicked laughter burst from my lips, bewilderment making Croak look incredibly innocent.
“Turn every single of these into a mirror for me.” I order simply, ready to take down the one who hurt my husband. “After that we get to kick ass. How about that for a blast, my dear?” Winking in my direction, one touch had the inky surface shifting into the clean sheen of mirrors. Storm clouds rumbled over my head, Madame Bone’s voice hitting my ears. Laying low for a minute, my arms buried Croak into a loose embrace. Perking our ears up, patience would be our winning strategy in this situation.
“How have you not killed her yet?” Madame Bone demanded venomously, a frustrated scream bursting from her lips. “Get on it or I will take your life!” Pushing her inches from us, time slowed down as she turned her head. Seconds from meeting my eyes, Croak blocked my way. Placing her arms out, violent sobs wracked my body as stone devoured her body. The mirrors shattered, shards of glass flying into my skin. Pushing through the pain, I needed to move. Darting around the spikes, glass buried itself into the bottom of my feet. A trail of blood gave me away, her snakes hissing not far from me. Searching for a mirror, the bathroom caught my eyes. Sprinting into the bathroom, a yelp flooded from my lips at the lock clicking on its own. Ripping the mirrors of the wall, my shadows moved to create a trap. Sinking into a puddle of shadows, the role of bait fell on me. The door flew open, the lights flickering with every click of her heels. My blade covered my eyes. Energy built in the air, my hair floating up.
“A statue is what you should be.” She hissed venomously, a glow shimmering over the edge of my blade. “Strike me like the monster you are!” Stepping back slowly, her footfalls followed me. Wicked laughter rumbled in my throat, a couple of stomps had the trap rising around her. Shrieking shrilly, her stone turning powers bounced off the ceiling. Sinking to my knees, I buried my head into palms. Waiting patiently for the shrieking to stop, the last one got drowned out in the groaning of stone devouring her. Rising to my feet, glass shattered across the floor the moment the mirrors dropped from my shadow’s grasp. Bracing myself for more acute pain, more glass embedded itself deeper with every footfall towards her. Pushing off the broken tile, a swift swing had her petrified form shattering into thousands of pieces. Using my hilt to grind each piece into dust, an icy breeze had the dust flying out the door. Madame Bone blocked the moonlight, another one of her spells trapping me in place. Terror mixed with defiance at her claws extending from her nails, her twins popping up behind her. Slicing off her head, inky blood painted my face. Whipping her blood off of their straight blades, the one in all pink with her pale pink blade sauntered towards the corpse. Crouching down to their mother, the color drained from my face at the sight of her slamming her fist into her chest. Ripping out her heart, Madame Bone’s head had tears pooling around it. Tearing it in half, her weak whimpers fell on deaf ears. The miniature version of Madame Bone scooped up her head, a toss had it floating through the air. Slicing it with her ivory blade, snow white lightning cooked it to dust. Kissing the silver rose hilt, her palm caught half of her mother’s heart. Choking it down, ruby eyes glistened with tears. Gripping her blade tighter, a layer of sweat glittered on her skin.
“Listen up, rookie. You will remember our names. I am Travaca and the dumb one in the pink is Salacia.” She introduced herself coldly, her steady heads fussing with her pristine ivory suit. Salacia hissed in her direction, her silky pink dress floating in a hot breeze. Twisting her silky gray hair around her fingers, her bangs did little to hide her cocked brow. Tugging on her sister's matching hair, my chance to escape was now. Backing up slowly, glass crunching gave my plan away. Snapping their heads in my direction, Salacia traced her silver rose hilt with a devious smile. How did the heart not affect her?
“Where are you going, sweetheart?” She giggled childishly, cocking her head back and forth. “Tavy, shall we cook her alive?” Flashing each other matching crazed grins, both of them lifting up their blades. Not understanding why they killed their mother, matching crow tattoos spoke of an alliance with the dark gods. Shit! When did they go over their mother’s head? Something felt off, my sword shrinking down to its dagger form. Time to go. I thought to myself, a puddle of shadows formed underneath me. Sinking into the floor, their swears were the last thing I heard. Rising up in the middle of a thick New England forest, the pain hit me. A loud fuck burst from my lips, my body collapsing onto a stump. Holding my dagger in my teeth, the next few hours of hell had me knee deep in plucking out pieces of glass after glass. Lifting up my dress, a thick silk liner would be good enough to wrap my feet. Dropping the dagger into my palm, a quick cut had two thick ribbons of fabric on my lap. Wrapping my feet, a knot secured them both. Struggling to my feet, a flash of blonde darted past me. A deranged demon was heading after who I believed to be Hel, my dagger bouncing off of my palm. Aiming for his heart, a flick of my wrist had the dagger smashing into the beating organ. Collapsing onto the dirt, Hel skidded to a stop. The body decayed to ash, her frightened expression upon seeing me sitting calmly. Snapping my fingers, my dagger whistled back into my eager palms. Dismay dimmed my eyes at the heart crumbling to ash. Smashing into me, she buried her head into my shoulder. Emotions soaked my shoulder, her nightmare of a mission flooding from her lips. From what I picked up, a nightmare demon latched itself onto her. Somehow she managed to wake up but the damn thing came with her. Too afraid to describe the nightmare in deep detail, an inkling told me that it had to do with her face. Lifting up her chin, tears dripped off of my hand.
“Did you happen to have a nightmare about your face?” I questioned cautiously, her darting eyes answering my question. “You look stunning to me. There is not a thing on your face that I would change.” Wiping away her tears, wails had her head buried into my shoulder once more. Holding her until the tears dried up, her body collapsed into my arms. Adjusting my feet with a grunt, a kick had my dagger back into its case. Placing her on my back, her arms draped around my neck amidst her slumber. Swiping the car keys from her pocket, they jingled in my fingers. Sending out my snakes to find my hearse, a few swift minutes passed. Slithering back to me, branches cracked underneath my feet. Wendigos of all sizes followed us to the hearse, their hooves began to walk away. Putting my hand in the air, a gift would make my presence a little less irritating. Laying Hel down in the hearse, the hollow eyes watched me fish around the glove box. Finding a bag of homemade tea leaves, their deer skulls turned in my direction. Walking up to the wendigos, my palms pressed together as I bowed. Pressing the bag of tea leaves into his palm, a grunt with visible breath announced his pleasure. Bowing in direction, he motioned towards my dagger’s case. Offering it to him, wonder brightened my eyes as his claws carved a symbol of protection.
“Thank you very much, you kind soul.” I chirped cheerfully, his hands pressing my case into my palms. Patting the top of my head, they lumbered back into the trees. Crashing into the driver’s seat, the seat belt clicking had Hel jumping awake. Embarrassment colored her cheeks, shame dimming her eyes. Laying her head on my lap, no words needed to be said. Turning the key, the engine rumbled to life. A numb look haunted her features, my fingers playing with her hair. Pulling up to the mansion, the others surrounded us the moment we limped in. Anxiety swelled in my chest, the myriad of voices driving my mind crazy. Every breath grew shorter, the room beginning to spin.
“Shut up!” I roared thunderously over the chaos, the floor groaning as everyone took a step back. “We have two new problems. Madame Bone’s twins murdered their mother for the dark gods. They are our new target. Leave me alone to th-” My three adopted children pushed their way through the crowd, all three tiny bodies smashing into my legs. Getting down on their level, Miles pointed to the blood pooling around my feet.
“What happened, Mommy?” He questioned innocently, the word Mommy breaking me. Violent sobs wracked my body, a quiet concern dimming the others’ smiles. Choking down the pain, everything hit me at once. How long has it been since a kid spoke such words? Cupping my face, Miles cute thumbs wiped away my tears.
“You took me out of the darkness and will forever be called my mommy.” He demanded sternly, kissing my forehead. “You can’t change a darn thing about it.” My girls hugged me from my sides, both of them saying the same thing. Morte ruffled their heads, his arms scooping me up. Carrying me to our bedroom, Cal asked the kids to make something special for me. Sitting me down on the bed, a grimace twisted his features that infected cuts on the bottom of my feet. Pulling out a milky liquid from his dress boots, he poured the liquid over my feet. Wincing at sharp jolts of agony, the wounds began to seal shut. Plopping onto the bed next to me, he buried my face into his shoulder.
“You don’t have to say a word but I am equally happy but sad that he called you his mommy. Please give him a chance.” Morte pleaded lovingly, his jacket soaking up my emotions. “Sleep.” Exhaustion hung on my eyelids, sweet slumber stealing me away.

Paradise Beyond the Horizon Line [Blade x Firefly] Part XXII: You're Soft

Part XXII: You're Soft

“I’ll take care of this.” Finally… I got to say something befitting of Stellaron Hunter: Sam today. I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t itching to wreak a little havoc by now. Still, to think Blade has resorted to such measures… Well, if he trusts me to put him down, then I don’t plan to disappoint. “Let’s make this quick.”
“I was freezing… starving… lost, tired, and rusty when you and Kafka ambushed me.” Blade cocks his head at me and scoffs. “Do you really think it’ll be so easy this time?”
“I won’t threaten you with a good time, Bladie. Mommy’s not here to sing you a lullaby for your little tantrum, so we’ll have to do this the hard way.” I amplify Sam’s engines to overdrive, roaring flames with the intensity to melt the carbon fiber we stand upon. “Now that there are no bystanders, allow me to redefine ‘collateral damage’ for you!”
https://preview.redd.it/jqbcnmz0hrwc1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=828b3445cabda9e6218c602fef67373509ee1b91
I jet in, elbow and shoulder first for a tackle, hoping to overwhelm with sheer firepower after goading him into a direct clash with me, an echoing sonic boom leveling the entire floor as his sword collides with Sam’s right bicep. As we push forth for ground against each other, I launch a pulse of embers into him at point blank with my left palm, yet he holds still, allowing his own flesh to be seared as he begins throwing punches toward my visor with his free hand.
The same hand capable of swinging a two-ton meteor sword repeatedly hammers into my skull as his sword locks down my right arm, the fire from my left seemingly unable to discourage him from close-quarters combat with me. That’s right… Against a foe like Blade, offense won’t be any form of defense at all. No amount of offensive pressure will force him back. Sam’s monitor begins to become completely smeared in his blood as he bloodies his fist against my helmet. So that’s what he’s after…
“Going after my vision! That’s dirty.” I dismiss the jet of flames from my palm and struggle to maneuver past my smeared vision to grapple his free hand, barely stopping his stunning assault toward Sam’s visual field sensors, and I slide my right shoulder down, allowing his sword to brush over and past me, as I wrestle his waist and suplex him over me by his grappled arm. With Blade now prone, I twist his arm into my chest and stomp on his back to pin him down. Just like this. Restrain him just like this until he’s calmed down.
“Save it.” He glares back up toward me as he struggles under my weight. “I don’t want to hear that from someone who borrows all their strength from an engineer!”
As I fold Blade’s arm further back in on himself to fully restrain him, he lifts his sword and severs his entire grappled arm before launching an assault on the leg holding him down, and I stumble back as to not completely lose balance while he quickly recovers and distances himself from me. “Like I said, you won’t restrain me that easily this time.”
https://preview.redd.it/cebccjb6hrwc1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d867af6917d7f60ba9fdb1fdf001fe11310f7b91
“Borrowing strength…!? That’s rich! When you get to abuse your gift of immortality like this?!” I look down at Blade’s severed arm limply dangling from my hand and back toward him standing on the opposing side, reassuming a combat stance as a new arm assembles itself. I toss the severed arm aside as it dissolves into a bubbling mist and sigh. There he goes flaunting that immortal body of his again. “I’ll have you know piloting this suit actively kills me!”
“Yeah? Well, I bet the way I fight kills me faster.” Blade charges me as I begin to scrub his blood out of the visual sensors between each of Sam’s visors, seeming keen on preserving and pressing that advantage.
Those words stun me for a moment as my brain tries to register it, and I’m slow to respond to his attack, stumbling back as I try to block and parry each of his consecutive swings before being forced to throw up a smokescreen to distance myself from him. “What did you just say?”
“I’m saying my self-harm to combat output ratio is more efficient than yours!” Blade’s crimson stare pierces through the smoke as he sends three slashes of force flying through the air like talons, cutting and clearing through the smoke.
I emit another pulse of blazing air to meet the talons, suppressing a radius of control for my own safety as I catch my breath. Sam’s engines erupt along with my scorching frustration. “Killing yourself is NOT a competition!”
https://preview.redd.it/9w3hiohahrwc1.jpg?width=849&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=181a4414f1857370b77d108d23d852a53f0a7d79
“Then why did you declare it so proudly?!” His words seem to clear the smoke even better than the attack as we meet eye to eye again, his sword pointed at me. “Do you think I don’t try?! That I’m not trying hard to throw everything I have at every fight, hoping one of them might be my last?” Blood begins to accumulate at the corners of his eyes. “Do you think I haven’t been trying to put this body through all the punishment it deserves?!”
https://preview.redd.it/nlltksqbhrwc1.jpg?width=742&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a6f5aab1521f53bd61ad843727b757090ba3a36
I stare him down as Sam’s engines whir and cry with something to prove. So that’s how it is… So we’ve both got something to prove. I don’t think I could ever understand… Why would someone so gifted with life want to die so bad…? To inflict so much pain onto himself…? No… He hasn’t been flaunting… Of course not. It’s been self-loathing this whole time. He’s punishing himself…
No, now isn’t the time for sympathy. He’s put his faith into me. He trusts me to send him to death’s door. I summon my swords in preparation for round two.
“So you dual wield.” He slowly approaches me as he observes my stance with the swords.
“So you can count.” These snarky remarks and one-liners don’t feel appropriate anymore, but what else should I say? What could I say? No, what would Sam say? What should Sam say? Don’t think so much in combat, Firefly. You’ve been trained to be better than this, AR-26710. Just complete the mission. My allies are counting on me. Just complete the mission. “Count on me to put you out of your misery then.”
https://preview.redd.it/rmpqjcajhrwc1.jpg?width=975&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=abfefcc327f5ccaf5c18a1205171f8e87288b408
“Such pleasantly familiar words from another swordsman, but those swords…” The blood accumulated by the corners of his eyes begin to flow down his cheeks. “What weight do they carry?”
“These swords may not weigh tons, but they’ll be more than enough to put you down.” I hate this. I hate every bit of this. Fighting a foe who fights not to destroy his foe but to have himself destroyed. Why would you put me in such a situation, Blade? Stop thinking like this, Sam. Sam? Firefly? Or just a serial number in a colony…
No. Just say the one-liners and fight the fight. Say the line. Fight the fight. I point at Blade with the sword in my right hand as wings of flaming jets sprout from behind Sam’s back, lifting me off the ground. “You’re compensating.”
“I don’t mean weight as in mass… Kafka wasn’t the first to stab me to death over and over when you held me down back then.”
https://preview.redd.it/6rgnriblhrwc1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=43f0b4e4290dbf223d8e292d9a2806ec6289419c
“This sword I forged as a gift for a woman who killed me with it time and time again until it dulled and broke, and when it finally shattered, she tossed it aside, claiming that she never should’ve needed my sword in the first place.”
https://preview.redd.it/w28vpnqmhrwc1.jpg?width=849&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=458038858a215edd54cacefcc54fb2fc1b170c38
He looks down, tracing his fingers along the crimson cracks of the sword in mention, a grave and gravelly sob in his voice. “I’m no stranger to sparks and steel myself, Molten Knight.”
“Then allow me to show you back to the forge, Blade.” That’s the most I can do for him right now, right? I can only offer him a moment’s relief from his misery. I take a deep breath. “It’s time you met your maker.”
Don’t overthink it.
Just say the lines and fight the fight.
Follow the script and follow the orders.
Say the lines.
Fight the fight.
Follow the script.
Follow the orders.
Complete the mission.
Don’t overthink it.
https://preview.redd.it/plt7mg3phrwc1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7dbdd2ea47524a7864264cb5729ce3ba201cc5e3
Good soldiers follow orders.
Good soldiers follow orders.
Good soldiers follow orders.
I fly in as our swords clash. Despite Sam’s speed and the two swords swiftly flowing in tandem, Blade seems to know my movements better than myself, each exchange blocked and parried as he follows through on strikes, flipping over my shoulders and tumbling through under my legs while I pursue his wardance with vying pyrotechnics, the entire Master Control Zone igniting with each blow.
https://preview.redd.it/p97jneoqhrwc1.jpg?width=849&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=26b9e96baa41bde6b27fed4589ab938772ee7f5f
Between minor nicks on my chestplate, Blade fails to meaningfully dent Sam as I shred and burn his clothes away, the scorched and diced flesh underneath only peeling and sewing over. I brace my swords up for his next downstroke, hoping to tank the hit head on and catch his sword, but he seems to read my preparations and, upon meeting my arms, glides along my guard to thrust toward my head instead of following through downward with his stroke.
I just need a good opportunity to restrain him, but he’s far more agile than I gave him credit for… This isn’t going anywhere… After dodging his thrust toward my visor, I launch a jet fueled punch into his gut to push him back. Blasts of fire won’t do the trick anymore. It’ll take physical force if I want to disengage a close-quarters exchange with him.
https://preview.redd.it/6zy3bdbshrwc1.jpg?width=889&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=911086f16ba00c3cdaf68e333c65d867db5e2b8f
Blade reels from the punch momentarily but recovers his footing, winding his sword back from the negative momentum before throwing out a wide arcing swing as I take the opportunity to fall back, charging a ball of fire by my feet before kicking it his way. He ducks and rolls out of the way, scrambling with some scrap metal in his hand as he tumbles through some shattered supply crates that were caught in the scuffle.
“My point is…” Blade begins unraveling some of the bandages on his arms. Is he rebinding them? Right now? In the middle of battle? “One sword, two swords, big sword, small sword… After a thousand clashes, what difference does it make but the one wielding it?”
https://preview.redd.it/m9puycxthrwc1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=491eed8c53718ddfcd12c3372a981a482d8838e7
I engulf my entire body in flames, folding my arms back for better aerodynamics, and jet directly toward him like a rocket, but Blade continues to duck and roll through benches, plants, supply crates, using whatever he can as cover as I chase him in blazing pursuit.
Why is he running so much now? What has he been collecting in those supply crates? I lock in with Sam’s sensors on the objects in his hand. Phlogiston? Strange Matter of Destruction…?
“One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish. Your proverbs sound like a children’s book.” I retort as I send concentrated blasts intense enough to blow through concrete his way, hoping to create a better opening to tackle him, but he still only dodges…
https://preview.redd.it/bbmr74mvhrwc1.jpg?width=747&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=43c25abfb35a50b6a147626239394c74e066735f
Maybe I can goad him into charging me head on again… Just how clearly can he think while marastruck? “Enough talk. Let’s set the record straight; you’re not going to beat me at the one and only thing I excel in.”
“You’re right, but like I said…” Blade leaps out through the smoke, the scrap metal and Phlogiston and Strange Matter of Destruction assembled into a makeshift cannon of some sort, bound together by the bandages taken off his arm.
https://preview.redd.it/u1asksrxhrwc1.jpg?width=850&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a67601b5882e98ac9d4e909c169e51553125b3ea
Holding it taut with his teeth, Blade finishes tying the last knot holding together the firearm before jerking his jaw to rip the bandage off. “You borrow your strength from engineers… So allow me to craft your pyre with the fire and brimstone of hell itself!”
I stand there for a moment, trying to process what I’m seeing before my eyes…
Blade’s got a gun?
Blade’s got a gun!?
Blade’s got a gun!
https://preview.redd.it/q3n5u6nyhrwc1.png?width=256&format=png&auto=webp&s=71f5e8176a0326a1c8eb590ba2af6bc531781d45
As I stare down a blue pulse of destructive force blasting towards my face, I bring my arms up in a guard, only barely making it in time as the energy engulfs me. Sam’s monitors flash red with warnings as I try to shake off the attack, struggling to find my center of gravity as I regain sight of my surroundings only to find the blur of an object flying directly toward my head.
I instinctively parry it away, and just as I regain my footing from the initial blast, Sam’s sensors lock onto another object hurtling towards me. I can hardly react in time as Blade’s sword hacks, twirling through the air with its wielder following closely behind. If that’s his sword being thrown at me, then what did I just parry?! Did he– He threw the disposable cannon first to disarm my guard?!
https://preview.redd.it/7xpzbre0irwc1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=310fffcc4858feb5124b77f4408525ed3136cd56
The subsequent meteor of a sword collides with my visor as I stumble back, nearly losing my balance entirely, and I clutch my skull through Sam’s helmet, completely disoriented from the concussion amplified by the flashing red warnings from within Sam’s monitors. I only barely make out colors beyond the shapes outlined by Sam’s sensors as Blade catches his sword rebounding off me and closes the distance to press his momentum.
In a panic, I rotate through my options. Fire! I ignite an explosion of embers and heated air, but Blade charges right through with no regard for the damage he sustains. Smoke! Clouds of ash and soot cover the air, but the crimson glint from Blade’s eyes remains locked onto my whereabouts as I’m still stunned and immobilized… I’ll have to physically push him away with a punch like earlier then…
I release the sword in my left hand and ready my fist in the last fraction of a second as we enter each other’s reach. A wave of relief washes over me as I feel my strike connect against his midsection for a brief moment, yet my hand meets little resistance. No, in fact, Blade’s free hand is guiding my fist deeper into him. I feel Blade take my arm and pull himself into my strike as my punch fully penetrates through his body, coming out the other end.
So this is what insanity looks like…
“That won’t work twice, Sam!” Blade stares me down with a maniacal grin and his torso entangled around my left arm as the smoke clears, and with a decisive swing, he picks out my right leg which I had most of my weight on for the punch, and cleaves its strength out from under me. “Now kneel!”
I plant my right fist into the ground to catch myself on that side as I’m brought down to one knee, and despite my trembling, I try to raise that hand again to do something. Anything. If I have to decapitate him at this point, then so be it. Tightening my grasp around the sword, I straighten my back to raise my arm for a counterattack, yet Blade seems prepared.
With lively vigor, Blade holds me down by the shoulder using his free hand and plunges his sword down through mine, pinning it and both swords into the ground as I hunch over in pain. Right through Sam’s gauntlet too… We stare at each other, my grimace masked by Sam against his psychotic excitement as we’re locked in intimate proximity, his sword through my hand pinned against the floor and my arm penetrating through his torso.
Talk about a fight getting ugly… I throw my head back before headbutting him with enough force to cave in his skull, but he takes Sam’s helmet head on, only briefly reacting to the pain as his smile remains unfaltering. Blood rolls down his face from the point of impact as my shoulders rise and fall with my every exaggerated breath. “Now what, you crafty animal?”

“Like I said, it’s not about the sword…” Blade reaches for the sword I had dropped earlier in preparation for the punch, and I can only struggle to free my hand and the other sword he keeps pinned under his sword of shards. “It’s about the wielder.”
I desperately try to free my arm from inside his torso, but Blade flexes and closes the distance between us, making it more awkward to do so. Instead, I dig my hand into his body and fish around until I get a solid grasp onto his spine, beginning to crush it and his central nervous system. “Don’t make me rip your spine out, Blade.”
He grimaces as his movement becomes stuttered and joltier, yet he still clasps onto my sword with both hands before plunging it into Sam’s chestpiece where it’s still severely damaged by the supernova back on Warforge. He’s been weakening that one area this whole fight… Is this really the same Blade Kafka and I found wandering alone in the snow…?
“Just go ahead and try it.” Blade’s head tilts back as I tug against his spine, paralysis overtaking him every now and then with his spinal column cracking under my grip, but his attack continues. It’s pierced through Sam’s chestplate entirely now… I begin feeling the tip of my own sword digging into my sternum. His eyes show no mercy as he presses on with both hands. “My spine will grow back. Will your heart?”
I release his spine and finally manage to pull my arm out of his torso now that Blade’s preoccupied with driving a sword through me, and I tightly grab onto my sword, now desperately trying to halt Blade’s attack. I wince as my sternum cracks against the increasingly applied pressure and my grip on the sword comes loose. I try pushing against his hands instead. No use… I’m losing strength… I begin pushing against his face, but it only smears it in more blood as my fingers on my one free hand brushes across his cheek. This is pathetic.

Did I lose…?
Is this it?
Is this how I die?
I keep my breaths shallow as each expansion of my chest only makes it hurt worse. My entire body feels weak under Sam’s weight, and I feel the fatigue of fighting this fate consumes me… Ah, it’s so exhausting. Is this really my fate? All that awaits me? In a moment, Sam will give out and disappear, and Blade will finish me off… My one purpose, I couldn’t even fulfill. I’m sorry…
I collapse out of Sam, the sword pressing into my chest disappearing along with the armor, and Blade pulls his sword out of my hand. Why do I have to be so helpless in this weak, pathetic body I call mine? I continue to lay there, sitting on my legs and staring at the ground. I feel tears wet my cheeks as I wait for Blade to deliver me from this mortal coil.
And I wait…
And I… huh?
I slowly and meticulously lift my head up toward Blade to find him with his back turned against me, walking away as his body heals.
I look down at this body. Is he still refusing to look at me? “Where are you going? Aren’t you going to kill me?”
“To find worthy foes.” He flinches and holds his head in pain. Isn’t that what he does when he’s fighting against his mara? Are there degrees of insanity to his mara? Come to think of it, Kafka tactically deploys it to small degrees every now and then…
https://preview.redd.it/5epinulbirwc1.jpg?width=863&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fbacb6dd9255147e38790b43ec98b6c731c95943
He pauses to take some deep breaths. “Consider yourself lucky. You’re in too pathetic of a state to be worth killing.”
“Pathetic, huh…?” Ha… Ah, so he really does think I’m too pathetic to even look at… I guess even his mara won’t mask that. I slowly rise to my feet and follow him as he turns to me. “You must think I’m so vulnerable in this state… It’s like I’m all naked and exposed to you, so you can’t even look at me, huh?”
“Don’t push yourself, Sam.” He points his sword back at me again. “I can make it quick and painless for you if you really want to go that far.”
I continue to weakly saunter over to Blade, each step more difficult than the last as I feel my body burn up and dissociate with my movement. So he still thinks of me as Sam right now… This is just… Sam’s weak and pathetic state, forced out of his armor… When I finally reach Blade, I throw my arms around him and pull him into a hug.
“Wh-What?” He stares down at me with disdain and confusion.
“You’re soft, Blade.” I muster the last bit of strength I have left and summon Sam around me once more, even if only for a minute, now having caught Blade completely off guard and grappled in my arms. I tighten my hold around him, locking his arms down and fire up Sam’s engines to soar upward into the sky with him.

He struggles to no avail against Sam’s bear hug as I accelerate. Just how many Gs of force do I need to piledriver him into the ground to knock him out…? Ah, it’s not like I can overdo it with this guy. After a few laps around the Master Control Zone, I redirect our velocity directly into the floor, and I crash Blade head first through one floor… two floors… three floors before our descent comes to a stop.
The dust and debris subside as I hold an unconscious Blade under my weight. I collapse out of Sam again and topple over Blade in exhaustion…
Mission accomplished.

Timestamp & Pics
Howdy KS, got a couple of knives to sell that just don’t get much pocket time anymore.

Spyderco Crucarta PM2

This is the version with full steel liners. I upgraded with a set of KnivesPlus bronze titanium hardware, and a bronze feather Lynch stubby clip. Original hardware and clip are included, no box or docs. At least second owner, used mostly for boxes and Amazon packages, very close to factory edge. There is one small scratch near the tip that I tried my best to capture, scales are a little dirty from being carried, but should be able to be cleaned up.

$180

#CRK Large PJ Inkosi
Birthdate: 08-23-2021
Large Inkosi in S45VN I traded for on the swap, it was well loved when I received it. I sent it to CRK for a full spa; fresh glass blast, new lugs, and a fresh factory edge. Has been carried a couple of times since it came back from spa, but haven’t cut with it. Box, docs, grease, loctite, and cloth are included, but no wrenches.
#$380 SOLD
I accept PayPal FF, Venmo, and Apple Pay. Prices included insured shipping to you.
