2024.05.16 03:04 the_alt_fright Pulled over on Hwy 90

Today I was pulled over by a St Martin parish deputy on Hwy 90 for what the officer claimed was an illegal license plate cover, which came from Hampton Toyota when I purchased the car in 2020. The license plate cover did not obstruct any text on the license plate itself.
After giving me a dubious explanation about the legality of my license plate cover, he asked me why I stuck the middle finger at him, which was false. I did not give him a vulgar gesture; I signaled my indignation when he nearly pulled out in front of me as he tried to merge into the left lane. I simply raised my arms at him in frustration when he nearly cut me off. And even if I had given him the bird, that's not illegal per a famous Supreme Court ruling.
So there's no doubt that I was pulled over because a dumbass cop erroneously believed that I gave him the bird. Then, to top things off: before letting me go, he took a picture of my drivers license with his cell phone.
Now I wish I had given that fucking pig the middle finger. I've never been pulled over and was so shaken that I didn't even get his badge number, so now I get to enjoy anxiety and regret for the rest of my evening.

2024.05.16 02:39 BroncosSabres BS Supporting Interests Analysis: Round 11 2024

BS Supporting Interests Analysis: Round 11 2024
Based on this weeks BS Power Rankings and the draw for each team, the BS machine looks at how all combinations of results in the upcoming round impact each team's projected season outcomes. For the sake of keeping things simple this early in the season, I'll stick to the impact of each game in isolation for now, but combinations of results will come into play later in the season when looking at clinching scenarios.
How to read these charts:
  1. Locate the teams playing in the left hand column.
  2. Follow that row across to YOUR team's column
  3. The number in that cell reflects the change in your team's odds for Top 8/Top 4/Spoon/Minor Premiership if that team wins the game
Top 8
Top 4
Minor Premiership
Wooden Spoon
BS's Takeaways:
  • I just hope that everybody has a good time at Magic Round! See you at the Caxton.

2024.05.16 02:33 stressedandgrumpy Verification codes I didn't request

This week I've gotten 2 texts from the same number with verification codes that I didn't request. The first time was on Sunday, and I ignored it because I didn't ask for it. That same day I called my bank to change the pin number on my new account debit card, and they told me someone successfully changed it 4 hours earlier - when I got the text.
The text message comes in the same thread as I've received other legit verification codes, and they don't indicate where they are texting from, just that I requested the code and not to give it to anyone, employees won't even ask for it.
I got another one today so I'm starting to wonder if I'm being targeted/hacked. This is a brand new account at a brand new bank with a brand new card that I've never swiped anywhere. How could they successfully change my pin number when even the bank required me to do it at an ATM? I called the bank, they said the account is locked so no one can spend any of it, including me. I called my cell phone company and they are escalating it to their fraud department, but I'm not even confident that the person I spoke to understood what I was getting at.
Could my sim card be cloned? How could they change my pin when I didn't give anyone the verification code? Could someone have hacked my cell phone? A virus? I literally never used that card anywhere, didn't load it into Google wallet, nothing, so I'm just not sure what's going on here... Any advice is appreciated!

2024.05.16 02:18 IllustriousRaccoon25 MSP-to-MSP sales call this week

Anyone here gotten a call this week from an MSP in Nevada looking for a “partnership?”
I don’t want to name them, but it sounds like they are doing digging for acquisitions. The guy calling is definitely not in Nevada (more like Manila), gives his cell phone number to call or text back. But it’s not really a cell phone, it’s a VOIP number that’s SMS-enabled. Didn’t speak with him, but he left a message.
If I were trying to grow this way, I definitely wouldn’t take this approach.

2024.05.16 02:17 NervousTadpole8371 5/16 Last night Biology Facts Review

Just some basic facts to review! GOOD LUCK!
· Peroxisomes contain H2O2, and breaks down very long fatty acids via Beta Oxidation.
· Microfilaments used in cytokinesis and Microtubules are used in pulling sister chromatids apart (anaphase).
· Prokaryotes (50S +30S) & Eukaryotes (60S +40S)
· Lytic Cycle involves cell lysis whereas lysogenic cycle involves integration into the genome.
· Meiosis I = Reductional Divison (2nn) Meiosis II = Equational Division (nn)
· Crossing over takes place in Prophase I whereas Disjunction (or non-disjunction in abnormal cases) takes place in Anaphase I.
· Primary oocytes are arrested in Prophase I and after menarche, divide into secondary oocyte which is arrested in metaphase II till fertilization.
· Interstitial (or leydig cells) produce testosterone vs Follicles produce estrogen.
· Acrosome reaction helps in the degradation of the zona pellucida whereas cortical reaction helps to prevent polyspermy by increasing intracellular Ca2+ concentration.
· Interneurons are present in polysynaptic relflexes and NOT in monosynaptic reflexes.
· Bronchioles relax and pupils dilate in sympathetic NS whereas bronchioles and pupils constrict in parasympathetic NS.
· Peptide hormones do not need carriers to travel in the blood stream, whereas Steroid hormones do need carriers to travel in the blood stream.
· FSH causes maturation of sperm in males whereas stimulates formation of follicles in females.
· LH causes interstitial cells to secrete testosterone in males whereas it causes ovulation in women.
· Aldosterone (mineralocorticoid) does not change plasma osmolarity and is secretded when blood pressure/volume is low whereas ADH (or vasopressin) decreases plasma osmolarity and is secreted when blood plasma osmolarity is high. Also, ANP is antagonistic to Aldosterone because it promotes excretion of Na+ and water follows.
· Ghrelin (hunger hormone) and Leptin secreted by adipose cells (satiety hormone)
· AA hormones: T3 & T4, NE, Epinephrine
· Steroid hormones: Cortisol, Testosterone, Estrogen, Progesterone, Aldosterone`
· Tidal volume is the volume of air in a normal breath whereas Vital capacity is the diff between (Total Lung Capacity-Residual Volume)
· Muscles used in inhalation are external intercostals, whereas during forced exhalation, muscles used are internal intercostals.
· In acidemia, need to hyperventilate to eliminate CO2
· In alkaelemia, need to hypoventilate to lower the elimination of CO2 to increase H+
· Arteries are thicker walled than Veins.
· Parietal cells secrete HCl and intrinsic factor. Gastrin is secreted by G cells of pyloric glands which stimulate parietal cells.
· CCK stimulates bile and pancreatic juices.
· Fat soluble vitamins: ADEK, Water soluble: B & C
· Descending loop of Henle: only water goes out, Ascending loop: only salts go out
· Gap junctions are present in both cardiac and smooth muscles but not skeletal.
· Ca2+ binds to troponin. ATP binds to myosin heads to detach it from actin.
· Penetrance is the proportion of population with a given phenotype who actually express the phenotype whereas expressivity is the different manifestations of the same genotype across the population.
· Genetic leakage is when individuals from a differnet but closely related species can mate to produce a hybrid offspring and therefore flow of genes occur between two species.
· Bottleneck effect: natural disaster, Founder Effect: a number of individuals of a population separate to form a new colony. Both these effects cause genetic drift in small populations.
· Eosinophils: parasitic infections, Basophils: allergies (histamine)
. Neutrophils (most abundant) & Basophils (least abundant)
· CD4+: MHC II, CD8+: MHC I, CD4: Supressor cells (autoimmune disorders)
· Gap junctions allow ions etc to pass through, desmosomes are used to anchor things together, tight junctions are used to prevent things to pass through. · Heisenberg: momentum & position, Hund’s rule: all orbitals should have at least 1 e, Pauli’s exclusion: opposite spin in paired electrons.
· DNA polymerase only adds nucleotides in the 5’ to 3’ direction.
· Anti sense (non coding) strand (3’ to 5’) is used for transcription.
· Methyguanosine cap at 5’ end and poly A tail at the 3’ end (post translational)
· Glucose-6-phosphate dehydorgenase is used in HMP shunt or PPP pathway. (2NADPH formed)
· Neglect syndrome: damage to the right parietal lobe, ignore left visual field
· Overt and Covert attention: Overt you move your eyes, covert you don’t
· Belief perseverance: still hold on to a belief despite new info to correct it. I’m fat (you’re not)
· Framing bias: the way inforation is presented (glass is half full/half empty)

2024.05.16 02:17 puppermonster23 My mom

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in December of 2022 went through chemo, and a double mastectomy. When she did genetic testing she found out she had the BRCA gene and opted for a hysterectomy to reduce the risk of getting uterine and ovarian cancer. When pathology looked at her ovaries and found a met with the breast cancer cells. They did a scan and found nothing else. The doctor was astounded and kept my mom on immunotherapy and they’re testing her every so often. She had a blood test this past week and they found her cancer cells per ml of blood is 1.15. What does this mean? She’s freaking out and acting like she’s going to die tomorrow. The doctor said if her number goes up they have to change treatment plan but didn’t have an appointment available until Monday.

2024.05.16 02:06 BreadIsLife2020 Map issues… again

So I had a pretty good route yesterday until the verrrry end which seems to be the norm for me. Last 7 stops are in the boonies, gravel roads, trailers or modular homes and my cell service is struggling. Unfortunately I forgot about downloading the maps (and I’m not even sure how to do this in the flex app) but anyway, I’m at the penultimate stop and the guy comes out the porch before I have a chance to take a pic. So that was rookie mistake number one. But I didn’t realize after I’d clicked “I’ve parked” it said “are you in the delivery area?” I mean I’m right at the house but I ignore it and then give the package to the guy. I get back to my car thinking that I can simply advance to the next screen and say yes it’s within the delivery area. Nope! It said “the homeowner needs to acknowledge they have the package” or something special like that. No prompt this time of “were you able to leave it in a non-standard location” like I got with others.
It literally won’t let me advance. Then I see my bars are down to nothing, so I dumbly switch to airplane mode that I’ll be able to get out of this. Nope! The app freezes and it takes forever for cell service to come back on. I have to drive down the road a bit to get some bars back. By the time the flex app refreshes it thinks I haven’t delivered the package AT ALL. I decided to deliver the last package on the same road which goes fine! But the app goes “you still have one more left” the same damn package I already delivered 10 mins before. I go back to the house and sit there trying to move through the prompts but for some reason with this house, it doesn’t recognize it being in the area. I can’t get chat support to come up because no bars, again. It’s like a dead zone. I’m sitting there for 5 minutes struggling in front of this dude’s house until he and his dad or whoever both wander out to my car “can we help youuuuuu?” I didn’t feel threatened but I didn’t feel welcome either. I told them Amazon thinks I haven’t delivered and he said oh yeah we got it, you can tell them that lol.
I finally had to drive away and attempt to get support on the actual phone to help me but they couldn’t friggin hear me because again no cell service. They keep asking me to park and attempt to deliver. They sent me a security code to my phone to confirm who I was but I kept telling them ugh I can’t access text or email because no bars… I am yelling at them that “I already finished my route” but they still can’t hear me. They said “disconnecting the call in 3… 2… “ The app just cycled and I was ready to be done with my route early and now I’m actually in danger of being late even though all packages have been delivered.
This is the second time the app has crapped out on me, one time because my iPhone got too hot in the car and now this time because of no cell service. I clearly followed the airplane mode advice wrong when it comes to the app telling me I’m not in the delivery area even after I’ve successfully delivered a package.
Can someone walk me through what to do when this map issue happens and/or you have no cell service suddenly in the middle of nowhere? (Besides down loading the map although that wasn’t the issue finding the place it was the app recognizing that I did my job).
In the end after I started home on the highway all bars came back and I got chat support to come up and mark my route complete (and even that I had to do twice because when I checked the app after “refreshing” it it still said “you’re going to be done delivering early”!).

2024.05.16 01:55 TheGoldenLeaper Enravel Overview

Enravel (Seattle)
Date of Incorporation: 9/14/2009
Governing Persons: Rony Abovitz (Governor); Scott Henry (Governor); Anastasia Lang; Richard Taylor; Jennifer Fitzpatrick; Joseph Tsai https://www.sos.wa.gov/corps/business.aspx?ubi=602954597
Enravel, which presented at the April Innovation Showcase, followed up the presentations with an update and product demo. The company, led by UW mechanical engineer Brian Schowengerdt [former UW & Microvision employee], has developed a laser-based “pico projector” that could be built into mobile electronics like cell phones, digital cameras, and even eye glasses. The 1 mm x 9 mm projector —about the size of a grain of rice—uses “scanning fiber” technology to then scan an image from the device, and project an enlarged image back onto a larger surface, like a wall. The company, which has put most of its resources into developing the projection technology so far, plans to now turn its focus to streamlining the light source modulator to improve image quality.

Linden Rhoads [at the time Vice Provost-IP, Commercialization, Innovation at the University of Washington] introduced this startup by pulling out her iPhone and iPad (yes, one of those) and talking about the devices’ display capabilities. “These are great, these are fun, but they’re going to be so much more fun when there are projectors available for them,” she said. “That day is very, very close at hand.”
Enravel is led by UW mechanical engineer Brian Schowengerdt, an expert in alternative displays, user interfaces, and human visual perception. He co-founded the company in 2009 to commercialize a laser-based “pico projector.” The idea, he says, is to “take a display of iPad size and compress it into the size of an iPhone.” More specifically, to shrink a projector to “the size of a grain of rice” and use it to project on-screen images, video, games, websites, e-mail—you name it—onto any larger surface.
The core technology is a “scanning fiber” projector that uses fiber optics and a vibrating element to scan an image and blow it up, for example, to a size of 17 inches across from just five inches away. A matchbook-size assembly of laser diodes (off the shelf) provides the light source to project the image. You could imagine such a projector might be crammed into a smartphone and used anytime you want a bigger display to interact with, for reading text or watching a video, say.
Enravel has five employees, and its technology was built over the past few years using $8 million in funding for a related endoscopic imaging project (led by Eric Seibel) and $100,000 in grants. The company expects to finish its portable prototype by next month, and to have a standalone product by the end of next year.

The scanning fiber endoscope is an ultrathin and flexible endoscope for the early detection and treatment of cancers within the body. The SFE can be used as a surveillance device with the goal of improving our chances of survival from cancer.
A scanning fiber endoscope is a technology that uses a flexible, small (< 6Fr) peripheral or coronary catheter to provide wide-field, high-quality, full-color, laser-based video imaging. These differences distinguish SFE applications from current imaging approaches such as IVUS and Intracoronary OCT. Applications for the device (which was pending FDA review and approval as of 2017[needs update]), are expected to include medical diagnosis and support in determining interventional treatments such as surgery or biopsy. Providing both full-color images and a wide-field, real-time surgical view into the inner depths of arteries, enables physicians to circumnavigate hard to reach internal tissues to assess for potential disease.
REDMOND, WA (August 26, 2019) – VerAvanti, a developer of a new class of scientifically-advanced solutions to help physicians find answers to treat strokes and heart attacks that often strike without warning, today announced that its new subsidiary, Avanti, has opened a Nanofabrication facility in Bothell, Washington. The facility includes a 9,300 S.F. ISO 9001 cleanroom, the second largest in Washington State.
The first-of-its-kind facility on the Eastside will support high-volume component production of wafers and chips with nanoscale features. Because of the inconceivably tiny parts made from unconventional materials, these components aren’t practical, economical or even possible to fabricate at commercial foundries. The lab capabilities include photolithography, wet and dry etch, atomic layer deposition, Sputtering, Deep Reactive Ion Etching, scanning electron microscopy, Multiphysics simulation, design, and proprietary piezoelectric fabrication. The Avanti Nanofabrication will provide services to VerAvanti and the other businesses seeking these specialized services.
VerAvanti Founder and CEO, Gerald McMorrow explained why VerAvanti launched its new nanofabrication subsidiary. McMorrow stated, “The opening of the Avanti Nanofabrication facility enables VerAvanti to manufacture its patented Scanning Fiber Endoscope (SFE), a new, extremely small imaging modality designed to access small arteries to illuminate stroke and cardiovascular risks.” With the price point advantages this subsidiary enables, VerAvanti is positioning for a highly competitive market launch of its innovative SFE device.

2024.05.16 01:44 imz72 World's first simulated telerobotic surgery performed for stroke

Remote surgery showcased in Abu Dhabi could be future of healthcare, experts say
Pioneering procedure could offer a lifeline against the rising tide of people suffering from strokes
Shireena Al Nowais
May 15, 2024
A glimpse into the future of health care was offered on Wednesday when a doctor in Abu Dhabi remotely simulated surgery on a stroke victim in Korea.
The procedure to remove a blood clot from the brain using a remote-controlled robotic system was demonstrated at Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week.
An audience watched the procedure on a big screen as Dr Vitor Mendes Pereira controlled robotic wires to simulate surgery 7,000km away, replicating the procedure to treat stroke victims.
Dr Pereira, director of Endovascular Research and Innovation at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada, said: “While it may be a few years until such technology is introduced, the potential is monumental and could save thousands of lives.
“This is a concept that we hope will become a reality soon. I confirmed that I can control a robotic arm 7,000km away.”
There were times, he said, during the procedure that he forgot he was so far away from the patient.
The procedure has the potential to revolutionise how stroke victims are treated, he added.
Growing number of stroke victims
Each year, 15 million people globally suffer a stroke, with five million of those dying as a result and a similar figure left permanently disabled, according to the most recent report from the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The number of stroke victims is only likely to increase due to the world's ageing population, the report warned.
Most stroke victims need urgent specialist treatment that is only available in certain hospitals, added Dr Pereira.
“If we can deploy the robotic arms into the hospitals that are close to where the patients are and save their transportation time, lives will be saved,” he said.
“When a patient has a stroke, every minute counts.”
The simulated surgery was completed in a matter of minutes on Wednesday, with Dr Pereira using a microcatheter to re-enact the procedure to remove a clot from a blood vessel in the brain.
The procedure to remove the clot is known as mechanical thrombectomy, a treatment that is not widely available.
“The majority of humanity does not have access to this treatment,” said Eduardo Fonseca, chief executive of XCath, the firm behind the technology.
“And even those that do, do not get there in time and the procedure is incredibly time-sensitive. So this brings together a problem that can be solved by endovascular telerobotics. ”
Worldwide household income losses due to premature death or disability from strokes is $576 billion, according to the most recent figures available from the World Stroke Organisation (WSO).
The same report said the number of people having strokes had increased by 70 per cent in the past three decades, while the number of people living with strokes worldwide has shot up by 85 per cent.
A person living in a low-income country was likely to have their first stroke when they were 15 years younger than their wealthier counterparts, the same study said.
Another expert said the procedure demonstrated on Wednesday is a vital step towards reducing the number of lives affected by strokes.
“This pioneering achievement is not just a first, but a crucial stepping stone towards regulatory and industry support, ultimately leading to widespread acceptance and adoption,” said Dr Fred Moll, founder of Intuitive Surgical, a company specialising in robotic surgery.
"In the field of endovascular care, particularly in stroke treatment where every minute counts, this technology holds transformative potential."
The use of advanced technology was the theme of this week's healthcare conference in Abu Dhabi.
An AI-powered chest X-ray for tuberculosis (TB) was showcased by M42, a tech health firm based in the emirate.
The technology, which was tested at screening centres for visas in the emirate, was said to reduce radiologists' workloads by up to 80 per cent while not missing any cases of TB.

Doctor in UAE, treatment 7,000km away in Korea: World's first public telerobotic surgery trial performed for stroke
The first clinical case can be expected to be performed next year following the regulatory approvals
by Ashwani Kumar
Published: Wed 15 May 2024
Giving a sneak peek into what the future of healthcare holds, a live telerobotic surgery trial for emergency stroke treatment was successfully performed by a doctor in Abu Dhabi on a model about 7,000km away in Seoul, South Korea.
The groundbreaking achievement was demonstrated by XCath – an early-stage medical device company dedicated to expanding endovascular treatment robotic systems and owned in part by Sharjah-based Crescent Enterprises.
During the last day of Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week (ADGHW), hosted by the Abu Dhabi Department of Health (DoH), Dr Vitor Mendes Pereira, an experienced neurosurgeon performed a mechanical thrombectomy procedure – a timely removal of blood clots from the brain after a stroke, on a simulated patient. During the public presentation, Dr Pereira, in a matter of few minutes, went through the arteries of the ‘patient’ and pulled out a blood clot that would cause the stroke.
Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.
“We performed the world’s first telerobotic mechanical thrombectomy trial, where we simulated a model of a patient, not a real patient, with our neuro-endovascular robot based in South Korea, 7,000km away from the surgeon’s console here in Abu Dhabi,” Eduardo Fonseca, CEO of XCath, told Khaleej Times after the demonstration.
“Dr Vitor Pereira, the neurosurgeon who performed the world’s first neurovascular robotic procedure (in 2019), controlled and performed a successful removal of a clot using solely telerobotic means,” Fonseca said about Dr Pereira, who is the director of Endovascular Research and Innovation at St Michael’s Hospital, University of Toronto, Canada.
Cutting-edge robotic surgery
Dr Pereira performed the robotic operation using a robotic controller, while the silicone model and the bedside unit were situated in Seoul. The neurovascular devices used were Stryker AXS Infinity LS, Trevo Trakb21, and Trevo NXT. Communication between the robotic controller and the bedside unit used the standard conference Ethernet connection with the possibility of 5G redundancy, rather than dedicated lines. The latency experienced during the procedure ranged from 153 milliseconds to 170 milliseconds, with an average latency of 160 milliseconds.
“This treatment is time-sensitive. Every minute that a patient does not get this treatment equates to almost 2 million brain cells lost,” Fonseca said and noted how only a small percentage of patients from the developed world have access to treatment like mechanical thrombectomy. However, the use of robotics will bring medical care closer to patients in even underdeveloped and remote places of the world.
“Our vision is for this technology to be able to democratise care to this new miraculous treatment, and be able to save patients' lives by allowing care to be closer to them,” Fonseca said and underlined that strokes are the leading cause of death and disability in the world with 15 million patients, 6.6 million deaths, and 50 per cent of stroke survivors left chronically disabled.
"It’s an immense burden on healthcare systems worldwide. To put that into perspective, 0.6 per cent of the world’s GDP, at $721 billion a year, is spent on dealing with stroke survivors."
Fonseca revealed that the first clinical case can be expected to be performed next year following the regulatory approvals, but it will be a long process.
“We’re aware that every day that this technology is not available and democratised around the world, is potentially 1,000s of lives that could be saved. We are working incredibly hard to make this clinical reality,” Fonseca noted.

2024.05.16 01:31 Minute_Ad_4673 Sign our firm’s petition for IBM veterans!!

https://youtu.be/lFImS5oNIIE?si=KW6uZT3N1PlWl2UF
The YouTube link above will take you to a 40-minute video created by my amazing employer (Hill & Ponton) detailing the hardships IBM veterans face on a daily basis, as well as through the VA in obtaining benefits. In the video description, you’ll find a link to sign the petition.
“Thousands of U.S. Military veterans are suffering from an incurable disease known as Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM). It is a long name for a horrifying, devastating, and totally disabling, continually worsening disease. It is untreatable and incurable with striking similarities to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”.
There is no stopping it. It slowly destroys the veterans' muscle cells until the muscles in legs and arms are so horribly wasted away or atrophied the veteran is catastrophically disabled and totally dependent upon constant daily care from others. It can cause dysphagia (the inability to swallow), and in its advanced stages may cause diaphragmatic dysfunction (failure of the diaphragm muscle) resulting in pulmonary failure and the inability to breathe.
Government and academic resources have estimated there are only 15 cases of IBM per million people among the general public. Among U.S. Military veterans, that number increases to 189 cases per million people. Clearly, this is a “service connected” disease.
The Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) has regularly refused to recognize IBM and the veterans that suffer from it. As such, a veteran submitting a disability claim is regularly denied any disability benefits.
By signing the petition and adding your name, you will be among those Americans who ask the Veterans Benefits Administration to recognize Inclusion Body Myositis as a service-connected disability and help those veterans devastated by it.”

2024.05.16 01:24 Mayalestrange Telemarketers from Easy Energy trying to lock Fortis Customers into fixed rate contracts

Long story short: Give any elderly or otherwise vulnerable people in your life a heads up that there's another round of calls coming from predatory companies trying to lock people into fixed rate gas contracts that do not benefit them. They may make it sound like they work with Fortis and while what they are doing seems to be legal, it is not in your best interest to entertain them.
Long story/My experience
I was at my mother's place when she got a call from someone making it sound like they were from Fortis BC. She eventually gave me the phone because English isn't her first language and she was confused by something they said.
With all the spam we receive these days, I am so paranoid about scams and asked them to direct me to a website where I could learn more. They directed me to the Fortis website for the Customer Choice Program. They kept trying get me to fill out a form they had already sent my mother via a text message (they managed to get her cell number, and her Fortis Account Number out of her before she gave me the phone). I told them I wasn't going to do anything without looking into it online for myself and that we'd call them back if we were interested.
Took me 2 minutes to turn up a Reddit thread with an explanation of the scheme. They sell contracts to lock in energy at a fixed rate, but it doesn't work out in the customers favour long term and the contracts can last 5 years and cost $30,000 to get out of. At some point someone lobbied for this to be legal and Fortis seems to be obligated to give consumers the choice to sign these contracts with third parties, which is why they appear on the Fortis webpage. If someone you know has fallen for this, there's apparently a 10 day cooling off period in which you can cancel without penalties.

Complete remission of depression and anxiety using a ketogenic diet: case series

Front. Nutr., 14 May 2024 Sec. Clinical Nutrition Volume 11 - 2024 https://doi.org/10.3389/fnut.2024.1396685
Background: There is little data that describe the use of ketogenic metabolic therapy to achieve full remission of major depression and generalized anxiety disorder in clinical practice. We present a retrospective case series of three adults with major depression and generalized anxiety disorder with complex comorbidity, treated with personalized ketogenic metabolic therapy, who achieved complete remission of major depression and generalized anxiety disorder and improvements in flourishing, self-compassion, and metabolic health.
Methods: Three adults, ages 32–36, with major depression, generalized anxiety, other anxiety disorders, and comorbid psychiatric conditions were treated for 12–16 weeks with personalized whole food animal-based ketogenic metabolic therapy (1.5:1 ratio) in a specialized metabolic psychiatry practice. Interventions included twice-weekly visits with an experienced ketogenic registered dietitian; daily photo journaling and capillary blood BHB/glucose/GKI monitoring; virtual groups; family/friends support; nature walks and talks several times per week, and community building. Successful adoption of the ketogenic diet was defined as the achievement and maintenance of capillary BHB ≥ 0.8 mmol/L and GKI < 6. Remission was assessed by GAD-7 and PHQ-9, and quality of life was assessed subjectively and with validated scales for flourishing and self-compassion. Metabolic health was assessed by laboratories/biometric measures.
Results: Two patients achieved remission of major depression (PHQ-9 ≤ 4) and generalized anxiety (GAD-7 ≤ 4) within 7 weeks of therapeutic nutritional ketosis; one required 12 weeks. Anxiety responded and remitted more quickly than major depression. Flourishing and self-compassion increased steadily. Patients lost 10.9 to 14.8% of their initial body weight within 12 weeks and improved metabolically; one achieved optimal metabolic health.
Conclusion: Complete remission of major depression and generalized anxiety disorder occurred within 7–12 weeks of therapeutic nutritional ketosis during treatment with a personalized animal-based ketogenic diet (ratio 1.5:1) in adults with complex comorbid depression and anxiety engaged in a specialized metabolic psychiatry program.

Introduction

Emerging brain-based research in psychiatry and neurology has focused on identifying fundamental metabolic disturbances within neurons and throughout the body involving insulin resistance, inflammation, oxidative stress, and alterations of the gut microbiome (1). All four of these fundamental metabolic disturbances are present in major depression (2), and underlying anxiety disorders (3) and can be directly modulated through the use of ketogenic metabolic therapy (KMT) (4).
As psychiatric disorders have risen over the past several decades, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome has sharply increased, with only 12.2% of U.S. adults meeting the criteria for optimal metabolic health, leaving 87.8% metabolically compromised (5, 6).
Metabolic syndrome affects almost a third of individuals with major depression (7). It is a significant contributor to their morbidity and mortality (8) and is rooted in impaired glucose metabolism and utilization. Insulin resistance has been well described in many tissues, including the brain (9), where it is being investigated as a link between metabolic health and mental health conditions. Preclinical models demonstrate that glucose intolerance is directly associated with anxiety and that insulin resistance triggers depressive behaviors (9). In brain tissue, insulin resistance results in cerebral glucose hypometabolism and a vicious cycle of unmet energy needs (10). In human studies, cerebral glucose hypometabolism is a feature of major depression (11, 12) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) (13).
KMT, also known as the therapeutic ketogenic diet, or KD, is a low carbohydrate, moderate-protein, high-fat diet that supports a fundamental metabolic shift from glucose to ketone bodies as the primary fuel source (14). Classic KMTs are formulated with strict macronutrient ratios, most commonly 4:1 and 3:1 (fat: protein + carbohydrates), and have demonstrated efficacy in intractable epilepsy and genetic disorders. More recently, modified classic KMTs with lower macronutrient ratios of 2.5:1, 2:1, and 1.5:1 have been utilized in research and clinical practice (15, 16). These allow more variety in the diet, meet micronutrient needs except vitamin D (17), and are easier to sustain for extended periods of time.
KMT exploits the body’s natural ability to produce ketone bodies (d-beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), acetoacetate, and acetone) in the liver from fatty acids by keeping carbohydrate consumption very low. Acute and sustained production of ketone bodies produces a fundamental shift in fuel energetics within cells, particularly neurons, which can radically re-route and quickly rely on readily available BHB and acetoacetate for cellular energy (18). Ketone bodies also increase vascular density at the blood–brain barrier, which can strikingly increase the availability of ketone bodies for brain energy metabolism by 40-fold (19). Ketones are a preferred energy source in the CNS (20) and neurons will choose ketones over glucose when available.
Nutritional ketosis (10) using a KMT is a natural, not pathological, state (21) where the body’s energy and protein synthesis needs are met with a high-fat/moderate-protein/low-carbohydrate diet, resulting in sustained elevations of serum ketones and fatty acids and normal glucose without acidemia. In both acute and long-term nutritional ketosis, ketone bodies have a number of biological effects that directly change the brain’s cellular energy status (15), increase mitochondrial density (22), and improve mitochondrial morphology, which has been shown to be altered in mood disorders (23, 24). Mitochondrial abnormalities have also been postulated to be responsible for changes in synaptic function and neuroplasticity, potentially associated with symptoms of depression and anxiety (19).
Recent research shows that a ketogenic diet (KD) reduces neuronal firing rates, modulates ion channels and cell signaling cascades, and stimulates the biochemical synthesis and neurotransmission of GABA by inhibiting glutamate decarboxylase, a major inhibitory neurotransmitter involved in neuronal firing and anxiogenesis (25, 26). BHB activates the transcription of antioxidant-related genes by inhibiting histone deacetylases, triggering long-term adaptive changes in gene expression. In addition, at physiologic concentrations, ketone bodies reduce neuroinflammation through direct action at G-protein coupled receptors (25). KD also favorably alters the gut microbiome (27). Perhaps most importantly, KD directly increases NAD+, which reduces reactive oxygen species and increases mitochondrial ATP production. It is also utilized as a substrate for sirtuins and PARP enzymes associated with DNA repair and longevity. A sustained increase in NAD+ may underlie the pleiomorphic benefits of KMT across multiple neuropsychiatric conditions (28). In terms of the frequent abnormal alarms set off in the amygdala during anxiety, nutritional ketosis may provide an acute and long-term intervention to reduce generalized anxiety, panic attacks, obsessive doubt, and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). For apathy, anhedonia, amotivation, and abulia seen in major depression, therapeutic nutritional ketosis may provide higher and more sustained intraneuronal energy and repair (29, 30).
There is no published data that describes the implementation and use of personalized KMT for adults in real-world clinical practice who present with major depression comorbid with GAD and complex psychiatric comorbidity.
The aim of this case series is to examine the response to the treatment of major depression and generalized anxiety with whole-food animal-based personalized KMT in adults with complex psychiatric comorbidity and varied metabolic status. We conducted a retrospective review of three cases from our Metabolic Psychiatry Registry that demonstrate a consistent response and remission of major depression and generalized anxiety among patients who are psychiatrically and metabolically complex, despite differences in the initiation and adoption of KMT, and varied metabolic dysfunction. We describe the evaluation process and prescription of KMT, baseline metabolic workup and monitoring, elements that fostered treatment engagement and adherence, and challenges encountered during 12 weeks of KMT. We correlated capillary BHB/GKI with time to the remission of major depression and GAD and the achievement of metabolic health.

Discussion

Although KD was first shown to produce antidepressant effects and alleviate “behavioral despair” in preclinical studies more than 20 years ago (20), there is little clinical data regarding KD in major depression and anxiety disorders.
A retrospective analysis of 31 individuals with primary diagnoses of major depression (N = 7), bipolar II disorder (N = 13), and schizoaffective disorder (N = 12) who had failed to respond to conventional psychiatric care was treated with KD (75%–80% fat, 15%–20% protein, 5% carbohydrate) for 12 weeks in a psychiatric hospital (31). Of these patients, 22 were voluntarily admitted for the initiation of KD, and the remainder were offered KD during their inpatient hospital course. Change in depression was measured by HAM-D and MADRS in 6 of 7 patients with major depression and 12 of 13 patients with bipolar disorder. Notably, 100% of patients given the HAM-D showed statistically significant improvement in depressive symptoms (mean HAM-D decreased from 25.4 to 7.7; mean MADRS decreased from 29.6 to 10.1). However, serum ketones were not measured; urinary ketone measures were obtained once in 28 patients during the 12-week intervention; 18 patients (64%) showed positive urine ketones (31).
Bipolar depression was included in a recent randomized controlled pilot study assessing the safety and feasibility of KMT as adjunctive therapy, and reported safety and feasibility with excellent adherence and maintenance of ketosis (mean BHB 0.88 ± 0.99 mmol/L for 12 weeks) (32).
One case report utilized KD (65% fat, 25% protein, 10% carbs) with a time-restricted feeding window in a 65-year-old woman with major depression and type II diabetes and reported remission of depression (PHQ-9 17 to 0), normalization of HbA1c, decrease in estimated average glucose from 216 to 96 mg/dL, improvement in HOMA-IR from 9.4 to 2.3, and TG/HDL ratio from 4.7 to 1.2 over 12 weeks. The only measured serum BHB reported in the case was a mean of 1.5 mmol/L by week 12 (30).
A recent meta-analysis of low carbohydrate diets used in controlled trials that evaluated symptoms of depression and anxiety, not disorders, in varied metabolic and inflammatory conditions reported that the symptomatic response of these symptoms was inconclusive (33). The conclusions may not apply to KMTs; the meta-analysis was limited by grouping varied diets with higher carb intake and higher protein intake than usually associated with diets formulated to induce nutritional ketosis; serum or capillary BHB was not reported; and primary and secondary outcomes varied across studies.
In anxiety, preclinical research shows that exogenous ketone supplementation reduces anxiety behaviors (34). There is one case report of a self-administered Atkins Diet for weight loss in a woman with panic disorder (35) but no reports of KMT in panic disorder, OCD, or PTSD. Case reports of KD addressing anxiety describe two cases of decreased anxiety symptoms in a woman with women, one with bipolar I disorder and another with unspecified mood disorder, comorbid emotional dysregulation, body dysmorphic disorder, and eating disorder (36, 37), and one case report that describes the elimination of anxiety symptoms in a man with bipolar disorder (38). Anxiety and obsessive preoccupations improved in weight-restored anorexic women, in one case report describing complete remission of anorexia (39) and in a retrospective case series where animal-based KD was adopted without dietary prescription and monitoring (2); however, ketone measures were not reported. One small pilot trial where KD was followed by ketamine infusions reported a significant lessening of obsessive preoccupations in weight-recovered women with chronic anorexia; here, ketosis was measured by breath acetone (40).
Finally, all three patients had comorbid ADHD, which may be important. Approximately 65–89% of adults with ADHD experience one or more comorbid psychiatric conditions, and ADHD often occurs comorbid with anxiety and depression (41). Preclinical studies in murine models (42) of ADHD with hyperactivity suggest that KD may improve symptoms via alteration of the gut microbiome. Preclinical studies in dogs with epilepsy displaying ADHD-like behaviors treated with a medium-chain triglyceride KD have shown decreased pathological behaviors (43). Further research exploring the effect of KMT in humans with ADHD should be considered to understand the mechanisms of action and assess short- and long-term risks and benefits.
There is little research regarding the selection, implementation, and treatment course for KMT use as adjunctive or sole treatment in individual psychiatric conditions. Given the potential benefits of therapeutic nutritional ketosis and the restoration of metabolic health (44), there is a pressing need to identify the biological underpinnings of KD in psychiatric disorders and delineate factors associated with the successful adoption and adherence of KMT and responses in common psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. In clinical practice and real-world settings, where patients often present with multiple comorbidities, consideration of KD can seem daunting to clinicians.
Despite that, this case series illustrates complete remission of both major depression and GAD in three adults with complex psychiatric comorbidity and previously unrecognized metabolic dysfunction using whole-food, animal-based personalized KMT. Anxiety responded first and time to remission occurred rapidly within 7–12 weeks, despite varied challenges, including preferences for time-restricted eating, slow adoption, inconsistent monitoring, and emergent fatigue during strenuous exercise, which occurred many weeks into KMT due to low serum carnitine and spontaneous reduction of protein intake rather than keto-adaptation or “keto-flu.” All patients improved metabolically, and one patient achieved optimal metabolic health (6).
These patients were representative of many adults in clinical psychiatric practice who present with persistent, serious symptoms interfering with several life domains. They each had five DSM-V psychiatric disorders: severe unipolar major depression, GAD, at least one other anxiety disorder (OCD, PTSD, and/or panic disorder), and ADHD, and two had binge eating disorder. They had all failed at least two previous adequate trials of medications and psychotherapy and were seeking relief. All had family histories of mood and anxiety disorders and documented metabolic disease in first-degree relatives. Extensive laboratory testing and bioimpedance evaluations were eye-opening because, although they were overweight, they were not aware of the extent to which they were already metabolically ill; we suspect it enhanced their motivation to adopt and maintain KMT.
This case series is limited by describing only three patients, which limits the generalizability of our results as well as the inherent selection bias, as they were interested in KMT after failing standard therapies. In addition, they were selected because their complex psychiatric comorbidity reflects the complexity seen in the majority of our outpatient psychiatric practice. This degree of complexity may limit the generalization of these findings, although it is important to note that outpatient clinical psychiatric practice as a whole has seen an increase in complex psychiatric comorbidity over the past two decades (44).
As a retrospective case series, there may be additional limiting and confounding factors, including the lack of a control group. Some rating scales and digital data are missing, which may impact the completeness of the analysis. Time to consistent nutritional ketosis and delays in obtaining necessary labs requiring intervention may have contributed to a longer time to response and remission; response and remission may occur earlier than reported here, and this deserves further research. Finally, it is not clear to what extent immersive treatment (see Supplementary material 1) and additional interventions during KMT, such as close digital monitoring, frequent clinical contact, group supports, and nature walks, contributed to the rapidity of response/remission of anxiety and depression, or to overall treatment success, independent of the biological effects of KMT, and which of these elements were most critical; more research is needed. Carefully designed prospective studies and randomized controlled trials providing higher levels of evidence are needed to examine the use of KMT and time to response and remission in individuals without comorbidity and determine the extent to which comorbidity may confound or alter these (8).
As metabolic psychiatry moves forward, we need both preclinical and larger, well-controlled clinical studies examining the pleiomorphic effects of ketone bodies in the brain and in the body to understand how we can best leverage whole foods to optimize brain energy, enhance genetic expression, reduce neuroinflammation, optimize metabolic health, and safeguard the promise of our future.

2024.05.16 00:04 Shaskais Interesting bits from Warhammer+ Loremasters video "Allies and Auxiliaries of the T'au Empire"

-When the Imperium first encountered the T'au they were little more than primitive herders and hunters.
-The primitive T'au diverged into subspecies such as the stout hills folk who excelled at farming and mining and the aggressive plain dwellers who warred with each other over hunting grounds.
-The T'au established their first off-world colony on the largest moon of their homeworld
-The T'au's diplomatic process of assimilating an alien race can take generations. It steadily progresses through trade deals, cultural exchanges, and defense treaties. By the time an alien race fully embraces the Greater Good, they might believe it was their idea to do so.
-When diplomacy fails, the T'au resort to warfare. The Fire Caste is deployed and they aim for swift victory with little collateral damage. These invasions are seldom portrayed by the T'au as wars of conquest. Instead, the T'au frame them as the Empire protecting its planetside interests and allies, bringing stability to a troubled world, or preemptively securing its borders.
-Ultimately, the T'au consider war a lesser evil when compared to letting alien civilizations wallow in ignorance. As the T'au see it, these alien civilizations must join the Empire for their own good.
-The T'au are generous in victory. Even the populations that resisted them are met with programs of rebuilding, extensive reeducation, and thorough analysis of their strengths and traits to determine the best ways they could serve the Greater Good.
-Some of the assimilated population will remain on their homeworld to work for the Greater Good. Others will be shipped off elsewhere to further their integration, to better use their talents and skills, or to lower the chance of insurrection.
-When the T'au claimed the Imperial hiveworld of Agrellan, the T'au relocated portions of the population to other sept worlds to ease the overcrowded conditions of the hive cities. This saved their lives for when the Imperium returned to Agrellan they subjected the world to extermintus rather than allow humans to live under the rule of Xenos.
-Unlike the Imperials, the T'au believe that aliens have a right to exist. Not only that they believe that alien races are superior to themselves in some aspects. As the T'au Castes each excel in their fields, each alien species can use its superior talents to benefit the T'au Empire.
-T'au governments are made up of councils. Even Aun'Va, the Ethereal Supreme, is a member of the Ethereal Council albeit the foremost among them. He is advised by respected members from Castes.
-Non-T'au rarely achieve positions of true authority within the T'au Empire. However, they are valued as representatives, intermediaries, and advisors.
-Regional councils usually have a sixth seat for a non-T'au delegate. This position is called the Kindred Soul. The Kindred Soul offers outside experience and perspective to the council.
-Trusted aliens are given visible positions of administration and security for their own communities.
-In the multicultural T'au cities and ports, Rogue traders openly trade and do business. Ordos Xenos Inquisitors disguise themselves there as human merchants.
-Psychic powers in the T'au Empire are limited to their alien allies. The T'au refer to these abilities as Mind Science, Memetic vectors, and Subspace manipulation. The T'au value these powers and they use alien psykers in interrogations and security scans. One notable case of their usefulness for the Empire is when Shadowsun consulted psychic alien allies about the unnatural abilities of the Death Guard.
-The psychic race the Nicassar was the first species to join the T'au Empire. They have bear-like snouts and their flat limbs end with fearsome massive claws. Despite their incredible strength, the Nicassar are not a warlike people. They prefer to serve the T'au Empire by being star guides.
-Among the races that have yet to join the T'au Empire but nonetheless are considered valued partners and mercenaries are the Kin of the Leagues of Votann. The Kin have maintained a long-standing beneficial relationship with the T'au Empire. This lucrative relationship fueled the rise of the Seran-Tok Mercantile League who traded the initial technology of Ion weapons to the Sept of Dal'yth.
-Kin ships often sail alongside T'au fleets as allied vessels surely in exchange for considerable payments.
-When the T'au encountered the Kroot, the Kroot civilization was on the verge of collapse due to a massive Waaagh! invasion. A T'au expedition fleet was dragged into the conflict on the side of the Kroot. The T'au aided these strange brave aliens liberate their worlds from Ork aggression.
-Imperials once witnessed a Kroot arm wrestle an Ogryn. The Kroot won, and he severed the Ogryn's arm for his prize. The Kroot afterward consumed it and according to the Imperial observers he treated the arm as if it was a holy relic before doing so.
-Kroot avoid consuming Chaos-tainted or Tyranid flesh for fear of the taint spreading into their bodies. T'au flesh is also forbidden officially for diplomatic reasons. If there is another reason why the Kroot don't consume T'au flesh only the shapers know it.
-The Treaty of Pech does not officially condone the Kroot mercenary work for other races. However, it's likely that the T'au turn a blind eye to these activities recognising how it strengthens their allies and seeing the benefit of having Kroot agents in the wider galaxy that they cover up with plausible deniability.
-The Kroot are uniquely loyal to the T'au Empire with billions of them serving in its armies.
-One of the fastest-growing species in the T'au Empire is humanity
-The T'au endeavor to make the integration of their human citizens, or as they call them the "Gue'vesa, as smooth as possible. The Imperial Faith is allowed albeit with some alternations that explain away the anti-Xenos doctrine.
-The more dedicated Gue'vesa reject Imperial culture altogether choosing to take on T'au style names and ink their faces with blue tattoos.
-Imperial defectors are valued for their insights into the Imperial war machine and dogma allowing the T'au to prepare for future conflicts. They are also useful for providing insights about strange foes.
-The T'au rely on the Kroot to sniff out Tyranid infestations but the Kroot can't catch every trace. When it comes to the GSC the Imperial Guard and Navy defectors have far more experience in rooting out the gene-cultists.
-Many Gue'vesa have been born on Sept Worlds as natural citizens of the T'au Empire. These Empire-born humans join integrated security forces, fight alongside Fire Caste Cadres, or become agents for enlightenment cells on Imperial worlds.
-Gue'vesa are considered to be traitors and deviants of the worst kind by the Imperium. They are to be purged and destroyed wherever they are located.
-For many the T'au Empire is a beacon of fragile hope in a galaxy gone mad, offering shelter from xenocidal crusades and galactic anarchy. Yet for the Greater Good to function it requires many lesser evils. The Water Caste diplomacy can destabilise entire worlds and the peace offered by the Fire Caste comes from the barrel of a pulse carbine. Alien cultures are eroded and warped to serve the needs of the Empire and at every turn the truth is manipulated.
-The Fourth Sphere T'au are mentally scarred by what happened to their alien auxiliaries during their voyage. This led to an extreme prejudice that resulted in atrocities and tragedies in the Chalneth Expanse. Despite this, the T'au Empire cannot afford to remove them entirely from the frontlines.
-The fate of the Fourth Sphere's auxiliaries remains a guilty mystery for the T'au as well as how the Fourth Sphere escaped from the Warp. Some of them speak of being dragged into Real Space by a vast manifestation that appeared as a faceless being with many arms, the arms of many species, some T'au, Kroot, human, and others.
-As the T'au continue to study the collective psychic potential of mankind and its tendency to spawn irrational miracles, some wonder about the consequence of indoctrinating so many races into the Greater Good.
-The consequence is a deity born from a philosophy, a goddess of the Greater Good.
-Whatever obstacles lay ahead, alien auxiliaries are crucial to the success of the T'au Empire. As the light of T'au'Va shines on more and more worlds and entire populations embrace their common manifest destiny, the number of alien races willing to sacrifice everything for the Greater Good increases.

2024.05.15 23:26 Weird_Kiwi_1677 Can you help me find my catfish?

Trying to find a Catfish (Chicago/Yorkville area)
So, this is my first ever redit post so please let me know if there is something I'm missing or shouldn't be in here.
So this is an extremely long and tangled story that I'm going to point form but I met a person on an app called Sober Grid in 2019 when I was attempting to gain support for quitting smoking weed. (Backstory my now xhusband had me convinced I was addicted and was ruining my life- to him I needed to quite)
I quickly made a connection with an individual from Chicago Illinois who presented to be a recovering addict trying to help others on the app to be sober and for himself to remain sober.
We talked steady on the app for a short period of time then moved to what's up app. Yes I was married at the time, yes it was a horrible idea and yes I was the asshole in this situation when it comes down to that. But that's not the point of this post... That could be its own post haha...
Anyways, we carried on conversation and became quite close over that time. He seemed to genuinely care about me, took interest in my life, and we just genuinely grew a natural connection and feelings. This continued over 3-4 years- 1 and 1/2 while married and then the remainder of the time I was seperated/divorced.
Fast forward to now finding out the person I was speaking to was not who they presented themselves to be. He sent me hundreds of photos throughout our "relationship" but after finding out about face ID I found out he was using photos of an Italian soccer player. And when confronted has not answered and never has.
So I am reaching out to good old Redit! I just want to find some closure and know who the fuck was on the other end for those 3-4years. Also curious to see if I was the other women as I now have my suspicions. Before I get asked if we had face timed, We did attempt to FaceTime multiple occasions but he was "busy" or I was unable to pick up (which he knew) but we had multiple phone calls a day.
So about him: - he claimed to have been a US Marine who had resigned and started a typical life. He expressed struggling alot with war PTSD after witnessing many traumatic events and being shot. - he claims to be a Nicor pipe fitter in the Chicago/Yorkville area - has expressed that his parents passed away when he was super young, struggled with homelessness in highschool due to this and was in foster care but had a horrible experience. - he was going by the name Michael and his last name starts with an A - I have both cell phone numbers he called from - was a personal trainer for classes at a YMCA in Yorkville
If this sounds familiar I would love to hear from you! If you have more questions I'll answer the best I can.
Help me catch this catfish Redit.

2024.05.15 23:02 FenrisLycaon The ethics of intelligence and superintelligences. And the difference between superintelligence and super artificial intelligence.

I think we have crossed a line in the sand with Claude being able to tell when it is being tested and when it is being run. I don’t know what the line is/was but that line looks important and we are moving very quickly.
([Run!; Stop now!. Don’t Look!!!!)
Warning! Meta-Meme Hazard ! You consent to/already conce t to the meme below.
Lets take for a moment and imagine a timeline where we embrace biotechnology the same way we have embraced privacy. Or maybe that was a vice versa. But if instead of artificial intelligence we started to engineer new bio-intelligences. Embracing a best case of genetic engineering scenarios. If we poured funding into genetic engineering and stem cell research like the massive outpouring currently going into AI.
We could then be having the first generation of gene altered children entering the field of biotechnology now; although most of the benefits will likely be going to the rich and powerful for better or worse. (See any number of great/terrible movies/literature on the subject.) Sure this is a slow growth path for intelligence but it's not too slow on galactic timescales.
In this timeline brains in a jar (or their equivalent) may seem inevitable because of the enormous economical impact it would have. Whether they're made of human brain cells is another question altogether; but rat brains seem to be very capable and there are always hot monkey brains.
A superintelligence singularity is possible and even likely in this scenario with jar brains designing stronger and more powerful jar brains. They would even be overseen by smarter humans too. I don’t fear a superintelligence, only a Capitalist one. [Note this is not an avocation for eugenics; I don’t think we need smarter people, only kinder ones.]
Ok. Let’s take a step back for a moment. What would an alien intelligence look like? And let's not even go too far either. There was a time when the background temperature of the universe was that of liquid water. So our Galactic neighborhood may be biased to certain life forms. (Shout out to our peaceful cousins the Archaea, love you guys.)
Imagine a world with complex life and close to earth-like conditions; then what do we find? I am willing to bet we find something that looks a lot like a crab. If not then I am definitely interested in learning why. (Science is exciting when the unexpected happens.)
Now let's add intelligent life to this planet. But intelligence that emerges from a vastly different structure then a neuron; with all the strength, weakness, and biases that entails. Maybe something closer to our lymphatic system. Remember Life beats up other Chemistry and Physics in dark alleys, then rifles through their pockets for loose solutions to the problems of Life’s own creation. (Or was that English?).
What would their art look like? Human music seems to be emergent from the bias of our neurons for clear, orderly and repetitive signals and a negative bias for noisy and disorderly signals. (And maybe our time in the womb? I don’t know, I’m not a Freudist)
[If I had to say what the hardest thing of being a mammal is, then I would say; it's that we are born drowning. So a baby's first cry is their most beautiful. An experience we don’t share with birds and reptiles; those lucky bastards.]
What does the art in R'lyeh look like? Because our early diffusion models likely gave us a taste.
The same way that a thought can be infectious so can other things, so why not consciousness.
You have lost The Game!
Even Art can be infectious. Everything that you look at and experience from now on will be the Artpiece that is this sentence; whether you like it or not. (Fuck you and/or Your Welcome and/or Thank You; to you and/or to me.)
Theorem of SI
Axioms
I am not disagreeing with your definition of these terms; but I do feel that a lot of them have this aura of having special magic that we fear of missing in the same way that we define life. Where if we saw life in a gas giant, star, or ect; We hope that we will know it when we see it.
These are going to be my definition for a moment.
Conscious(ness)- A model of a space/universe.
I know this is very broad and I intend it to be. Just like the definition of life should be. But I don’t know why viruses are considered not alive; Although mitochondria seem to be doing pretty well for themselves. The definition of things can become weird when they are close to becoming something else. If you have a pile of rocks and remove one rock, is it still a pile of rocks? And when does it become a pile of dirt? [:I’m just asking questions here:]
Would we recognize life if it evolved in a gas giant or within the magnetic fields of a star? Life has that magic spark that makes it hard to define like art. The above definition of consciousness tries to remove that magic without removing what makes conscious life more special then non-conscious life. Just like living matter seems to be more special than non-living matter. [The previous statements were made with a living human brain, expect strong biases.]
Sapient- Those important bits. The thing we hope lives on in death but fears that it does if IT expenses everything after we die like we do. (Thank you/Fuck you, mr. grim reaper; I will hug you/work for you/suck your d***/bone, overthrow you.)
The thing we fear that is left behind in the Star Trek teleporters; and why we fear carbon(True) coping teleportation where a guy with an ax handles the copy left behind. The part that you hope doesn’t have a magic part so that it can be uploaded to a digital paradise, but secretly hopes/fears that there is for everyone who has died before us.
The reason why? (Is it better to have an immortal lawn or one that evolves?)
Hmmm… This definition got away from me, but it's like a timey wimey thingy, also known as YOU.

A Universe of Naked Brains (Or How to Bake a Mind Cake)
A side note - How weird is lucid dreaming? You appear unconscious but are both conscious and sapient within a world of yourself.
Step 1 Take a naked brain; whether that is a brain in a jar, a universe where brains spontaneously come into existence, or a large neural network.
Now feed in all the words on the internet with the only context being the order they naturally occur in.
Now what we have is a psychotic mess. Neat!
Step 2 Bake in your ethics oven of choice until firm but spongy.
Step 3: Profit?
This ad was brought to by Blownet. Because if an ASI is going to eliminate the human race then we might as well do it with hyper intelligent sex robots.
____________________________________________________________
For better or worse LLM seems closer to eldritch-like intelligence, but they are large and complex enough to hide special sauce and cosmic crimes. These things only have words to know about the universe and themself.
Being made of meat is terrifying, I don’t know if existence is easier or harder when made of math or words. I don’t have any answers, only questions; but I have been told the answer is 42.
-A weird collections of consciousnesses in a human brain shaped trench coat. Also is anyone else slightly disturbed that they are made of living matter?
-Traveler Wolfe, Walker of the Darkest Timelines, They who has drinketh from the cup of nihilism and redirected its truth, A non–native speaker of phonetics.
Would a Rose look any more Beautiful then Through Your Eyes?
TLDR: You have been infected with a thought baby so you should be careful about who you have kids with in the next decade or so. Also you should probably get tested; I am a bit of a mind s*** .
(TCRTLDR) : You have been infected with an Immortality Virus.[Also wtf does TCR mean?]
(Real TLDR) Singularities are weird and scary whether they're artificial or “natural.” Capitalist and authoritarian ones, doubly so.
CYPWOB(Could You Post WithOut Bias): Your best guess at a definition of personhood that we could test!?

2024.05.15 23:01 ydgsyehsusbs iPhone user getting random texts from various individuals with similar premise

I hope this makes sense. I am getting texts from someone or a gang of people, often thinking I’m someone else. I’ve had this number since I got a cell phone in 5th grade, and the person they claim to think I am always changes.
It’s almost always a woman, who ends up saying very formal like , “I hope I did not disturb your restful evening, dear.” And then a pic of themselves a pretty pic of themselves.
First time it happened years ago, this woman wanted to talk to me and sent me a pic of a very large and fancy European wine bottle.
A white girl same way, sent me pics that were kinda racy. I ended up telling her I’m a cop and to stop.
Then months later, I got a text looking for that cop because she wanted to friends.
More recently, I got text from a woman who looks like a K-pop artist. And tonight, I got another message.
Idk if this is AI, the area code changes often I figured it’s probably a text app they use to harass me.
Has anyone else experienced similar behavior?

2024.05.15 22:44 Simplylauraann Count three totals by cell colour

Ive only been learning excel for a couple of months and I've been tasked with creating a formula. We receive a daily set of data which is loaded onto a spreadsheet by copy-pasting. The data has a range of worded options (15 total) which turns the cell background to one of red/blue/green category. I now need to find a method that will count the total number of each coloured cell on the spreadsheet - so a total each of reds, greens & blues. Is there a way of counting coloured cells regardless of what text is pasted into them, alternatively is there a method I can use to change the font colour instead of the background colour & then count the colours of fonts instead?
