Hello Gamemasters and Friends, submitted by dScryb to dScryb [link] [comments] Let's start with the May Giveaway and then get into the updates. Enter the May GiveawayOur good friend Bob from the YouTube channel Bob World Builder, along with Eventyr Games, have just launched DELVE—a 200+-page guide to dungeons for 5E Dungeons & Dragons and Shadowdark RPG on Kickstarter. To celebrate, we're giving away the following:
Languorbloom by Daniel Caballero Opus UpdatesIf you're not already aware, Opus is a freshly-built, single-page web app that brings together dScryb's text, ambiences, sound effects, and music. It can play high-quality audio for your in-person or virtual players, and it works with Kenku FM for Discord integration.Opus Here's what we've added since the last newsletter:
Right now, on the content side, our priority is composing sound effects and descriptions for all 5e spells, followed by monsters. We expect all 5e spell sound effects to be published this month. Hear what's new. Try Opus! Opus RoadmapWe're continuing to enhance the user interface, including general polish and bug fixes—but our main focus for the next few weeks will be database improvements utilizing Node.js. It's not sexy but it will improve performance and unblock certain features that we're excited to develop next. After that, the next two items in our roadmap are (1) advanced music playlist and sfx board selection in collections; and then (2) player-fired SFX and Character files. We want to encourage participation in the beta, so we're currently offering a free 14-day trial on all subscriptions. (We recommend trialing the Celestial subscription, as this unlocks all content within Opus.) This offer is available to everyone, including current Composer, Hero, and Player subscribers. Start your free trial! Delve – A Guide to Dungeons for 5E & Shadowdark RPGDELVE is a 200+-page guide to dungeons for 5E Dungeons & Dragons and Shadowdark RPG by Bob World Builder and Eventyr Games.DELVE combines classic advice with modern resources that’ll make crawling through dungeons fun for the players and easy for the GM! DELVE Kickstarter DELVE has advice and guides for building awesome dungeons, new player options for dungeon delving characters, and plug-and-play dungeons filled with unique monsters, hazards, traps, and challenges! You can check out the DELVE Kickstarter here. New Auto-SFX Feature in FoundryVersion 4.4.3 of the dScryb Foundry module is out with the Auto-SFX feature! Go try it out!How it works: We've mapped hundreds of sound effects to hundreds of weapons, spells, items, monster deaths and more. All these assignments can be overwritten (and reverted) by the user. Also, an item that doesn't have a sound effect assignment can receive a custom sound effect assignment by the user. When these events occur, such as a weapon attack or monster death, the mapped sound effect is automatically played for everyone to hear. dScryb's Foundry VTT Module: Auto-SFX As we publish more sound effects, it will only get better. We aim to have all 5e spells done by the end of the month. Currently, this feature is only available for the 5e game system, but we have our sites on the Pathfinder game system next. And there's more great development coming soon for this module! If you haven't already seen it, our friend Fondue from Dice & Easy released a fantastic walkthrough of the dScryb Foundry VTT module. March dScryb Giveaway Winner, Alex!dScryb congratulates the winner of the February dScryb giveaway, Alex!We thank everyone who participated in the giveaway. Are there any ad blocker extensions for Chrome that you trust and know won't negatively impact the performance of a computer or mobile phone? submitted by softtechhubus to u/softtechhubus [link] [comments] Section 1. IntroductionAd blocking has become increasingly popular in recent years as a way for users to enhance their privacy and online experience. However, some ad blockers may have unintended consequences on device performance if not implemented carefully. In this article, we will evaluate the top ad blocking extensions available for Chrome and provide recommendations on options that offer robust blocking capabilities without compromising performance.A. Importance of ad blockers for online privacy and ad-free browsing experienceThe proliferation of online advertisements has expanded dramatically in the digital era. While ads play an important role in supporting free content and services on the web, they also present privacy and usability concerns. Ad networks track users across multiple sites and devices to build profiles for targeted advertising. With no easy way for users to opt-out, this widespread tracking threatens online privacy.Beyond privacy, advertisements can also negatively impact the browsing experience. Intrusive ads that pop up or take over the screen, auto-playing videos with sound, and a excessively high ad density all contribute to user frustration. For some, ads can even slow down page loading or cause websites to crash on low-powered devices. Installing an ad blocker helps regain control over both privacy and experience online. It prevents trackers from following users unknowingly and removes disruptive/intrusive ads that degrade the user experience. This allows for a more peaceful, distraction-free browsing session. B. Impact of ad blockers on device performanceWhile ad blockers solve privacy and usability problems, it's also important to consider their impact on device performance. Some low-quality ad blockers may inadvertently slow down browsers, consume significant memory and CPU resources, or cause stability issues. This happens when they are poorly optimized, bloated with unnecessary code, or not properly configured.Efficient ad blocking requires identifying ad content accurately without loading excessively large blocklists or complex resource-intensive code on each webpage visit. Blocking the wrong elements could break site functionality too. A delicate balance needs to be struck between robust blocking and minimal performance overhead. For low-powered devices like phones, even small reductions in efficiency from an ad blocker can negatively impact the user experience over time through slower page loads, higher data usage, reduced battery life and potential crashes. Heavier users also need high-performance options. Therefore, in this article we will focus on recommending extensions that effectively block ads and trackers while keeping any performance impact minimal through lightweight code and optimized lists/algorithms. Our goal is to identify options you can trust not to burden your device. Section 2. Criteria for Selecting a Reliable Ad Blocker ExtensionWhen choosing an ad blocker extension, there are several factors to consider regarding both functionality and performance:A. Effectiveness in blocking adsThe primary purpose of an ad blocker is blocking advertisements. It should implement robust filtering lists from trusted sources like EasyList to block the widest range of ads without compromising too much on effectiveness. Advanced options for customizing filters are ideal too.B. Minimal impact on device performanceAs discussed earlier, performance needs to be a priority too. The extension should have a lightweight codebase and optimized algorithms/lists to impose minimal overhead in terms of memory, CPU and network usage as well as page load times.C. Privacy protection and user data policiesBeyond blocking, it's preferable if the extension does not compromise user privacy itself, is open source for transparency, and has a privacy-respecting data policy. Options with built-in anti-tracking features are a bonus.D. Compatibility with different platforms (desktop, mobile)Given this article focuses on Chrome, the extension should be compatible with both Chrome desktop andChrome mobile/Android at minimum for maximum usability. Compatibility with other browsers like Firefox is an advantage too.Keeping these criteria in mind, we will now evaluate some of the most popular ad blocking extensions available for Chrome. Section 3. Recommended Ad Blocker Extensions for ChromeBased on effectiveness, performance impact, and other considerations, here are three top extensions that balance ad blocking and minimal resource usage well:A. uBlock OriginuBlock Origin (uBO) is a light yet powerful open source content blocker focused on efficiency and user privacy. It stands out for its low memory usage, minimal CPU/battery consumption, and great blocking capabilities without impacting sites.Features and functionality
Performance impactuBO is extremely lightweight, using under 5MB of RAM even on pages with hundreds of requests. It maintains near-zero impact on page load times and system resources.Pros and cons
B. AdGuardAdGuard is a popular multi-platform ad blocker (Chrome, Firefox, Safari etc.) with a clean interface. It offers effective blocking along with tracker protection and optional paid premium features.Features and functionality
Performance impactWhile still lightweight, AdGuard uses slightly more memory/CPU than uBO. But the impact remains minor without notable slowdowns. Page load times stay largely unaffected.Pros and cons
C. GhosteryGhostery combines ad blocking with a tracker database to highlight the trackers present on each site. It emphasizes user control, transparency and a clean experience.Features and functionality
Performance impactGhostery uses noticeably more memory and CPU than either uBO or AdGuard at times. Page load times aren't greatly affected though.Pros and cons
D. Other notable ad blocker extensionsA few other popular Chrome extensions worth briefly mentioning include:
Section 4. Performance ConsiderationsBeyond just the extensions themselves, there are other factors like filter lists, configuration, and device capabilities that impact overall performance with ad blocking:A. Impact of ad blockers on CPU and memory usageEven lightweight extensions will consume a small amount of system resources to run their blocking processes. But heavier extensions can use significantly more memory (10-50MB+) and keep the CPU active more often. This is magnified on lower-end devices.B. Effect on page load timesWhile modern blockers try to load asynchronously not to slow pages, processing blocklists still requires processing time upfront. Sites with hundreds of requests see slightly higher loading latency on average versus unblocked. Faster hardware helps compensate.C. Strategies for minimizing performance impact
Section 5. Installation and Configuration TipsNow that we've explored the top options, here are some tips for installing and configuring extensions effectively:A. Downloading and installing the extensionChrome extensions are installed through the Chrome Web Store. Simply search for the extension, click "Add to Chrome", and it will install with basic default settings.B. Customizing settings and filter listsMost extensions allow customizing the type of content blocked as well as enabled filter lists through their browser Options/Settings page. Take time to learn interface and tweak as needed.C. Whitelisting trusted websitesTo avoid breaking any essential sites, consider temporarily whitelisting them in the extension if they malfunction with blocking. Re-enable once site issues are resolved.A few minutes spent setting up with consideration for battery/performance can make a big difference to avoid any unintended slowdowns over the long run. Always make sure extensions are up to date too. Section 6. ConclusionIn this extensive article, we evaluated some of the top ad blocking extensions for Chrome across several criteria including effectiveness, performance impact, features and usability. The goal was to identify options that deliver robust ad/tracker blocking without compromising device performance over time. For the best balance of powerful yet lightweight blocking, uBlock Origin emerges as the top overall recommendation thanks to its minimal resource demands. It achieves top-notch blocking capabilities without noticeable impact. AdGuard provides a very good alternative with additional anti-tracking and optional premium features, staying lightweight as well. While heavier on resources, Ghostery brings unique tracker insights for some through its Identification Panel. Keeping performance in mind, even seemingly small reductions from "heavier" blockers can accumulate over long mobile/laptop usage to negatively impact battery life and user experience. Choosing optimized options maintains privacy gains without such tradeoffs. In summary, uBlock Origin is highly recommended as the best free lightweight option for powerful privacy without performance compromise. For mobile browsers especially, focusing on optimized extensions becomes important to prevent slower speeds or reduced uptime over time. With a bit of initial configuration, ad blocking can vastly improve the browsing experience seamlessly on any device. These features are essential because they prevent your data from being exposed during unexpected disconnects or vulnerabilities.Additionally, the encryption provided by VPNs masks your IP address and online activities, shielding you from potential cyber threats. What's more, a strict no-logs policy is a game-changer. It means that the VPN doesn't store any details about your internet usage, ensuring your online actions remain private and untraceable. This thorough approach to security makes VPNs an essential tool for safeguarding your digital life. Speed and ReliabilityReddit users often stress the importance of a VPN's speed and reliability for a seamless online experience. From personal encounters, it's evident that a VPN that lags or frequently disconnects can be exasperating. Fast connection speeds are crucial for smooth website access and media streaming, reducing buffering frustrations. Moreover, reliability is vital, particularly for activities like online gaming or downloading large files that demand a stable internet connection. Opting for a VPN with a reputation for consistent performance not only protects your online endeavors but also ensures uninterrupted usage. Consequently, I consistently prioritize these aspects when selecting a VPN due to their significant influence on the quality of online interactions.https://preview.redd.it/awrzb7e94zxc1.jpg?width=1456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7645b2472ca9efa81385dcc29c155809e1fb6c9e Cost Efficiency AnalysisAfter considering the importance of speed and reliability, I also assess the cost efficiency of a VPN to make sure I'm getting the best value for my money. Evaluating a VPN's cost involves more than just looking at the price tag. It's about analyzing what I'm getting in return. I check subscription plans, look for discounts, and consider any additional services they might offer. Understanding the pricing structure is key. Does it align with the features provided? Moreover, considering long-term benefits is essential. Sometimes paying a bit more upfront can save money in the long run if the VPN offers exceptional service and reliability. It's all about the balance between cost and value. Device Compatibility CheckWhen selecting a VPN, I always make sure it's compatible with all my devices, from smartphones to laptops. It's essential that the VPN works across Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and even routers.I check if it allows simultaneous connections on multiple gadgets, which is a necessity for covering all my tech. Also, browser compatibility is vital for seamless browsing, so I guarantee it integrates well with Google Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. Dedicated apps for specific devices are a significant benefit, ensuring top performance and ease of use. Finally, I verify the VPN supports various connection protocols to maintain compatibility across different network environments, enhancing flexibility and security. Legal Considerations OverviewUnderstanding the legal considerations of using a VPN is vital for guaranteeing compliance with the laws specific to each country. The legality of VPNs varies widely, with some nations having restrictions or outright bans on their use. It's essential for users, like myself, to be aware of these laws to make sure we're using VPNs legally and securely. For instance, services like NordVPN not only comply with legal regulations but also offer robust security features, enhanced privacy, and faster connection speeds. This makes them a preferred choice for those of us seeking both compliance and performance. When choosing a VPN, it's not just about unblocking content; it's also about staying on the right side of the law. https://preview.redd.it/swwhaita4zxc1.jpg?width=1456&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1e4d9386b0280769c8a0302f4d7f8c90b0f9e3be Service Accessibility OptionsWhile considering the legal aspects of VPNs, I also evaluated the service accessibility options critical for my online needs. I also checked if they offer dedicated IP addresses, which enhance both security and privacy. Moreover, I sought out VPNs with a variety of protocols and strong encryption types to guarantee robust security. 2024.05.02 00:00 italiandude3 Unidentified Extension in Chrome is Blocking Permission to Mic and Camera
Solution: Uninstall the Private Internet Access (PIA) Extension submitted by italiandude3 to chrome [link] [comments] About a week ago, I suddenly lost the ability to use my Mic or Camera on my MacBook Pro using the Chrome browser. When I view settings in the extensions, they all appear to be Blocked by an Extension. Example of an extension in Chrome's Site Setting shows Camera and Mic are blocked by an extension Next, I went into the Extension Settings in Chrome and deactivated all of my extensions. I'm reluctant to actually uninstall these extensions, but that's one of the only steps I have not taken yet. I believe deactivating them should essentially remove them as a variable causing this issue. Chrome Extensions settings Finally, I went into my Mac's Privacy & Security settings to confirm Chrome has permission to the Mic and Camera. MacBook Privacy & Security setting for Mic shows Chrome has permission https://preview.redd.it/pbx6lprwwvxc1.png?width=998&format=png&auto=webp&s=28fc324595cc867d85a6f0873b22aac71a96aad5 My last attempt was to reset Chrome's settings, which also did not fix the permission issue. Reset all settings in Chrome Based off of extensive searches on the internet, I cannot find any additional information on how to fix this issue. This is extremely frustrating because I was recently laid off and now cannot use my computer for interviews. HELP! |

2024.04.30 22:05 StephenScript Need to contribute to access Glassdoor? I got you.
https://preview.redd.it/svulmtmaaoxc1.png?width=1136&format=png&auto=webp&s=f505ad26e0e6140af58daed4e32712b34071ec7b submitted by StephenScript to recruitinghell [link] [comments] Checked out Glassdoor as it came up in one of my Google searches when researching a company and was greeted with this popup that locked me out from using the website unless I added a post or review. I found this pretty obnoxious, but I am also concerned that this is exclusionary of new grads or employees of smaller companies. Finding a job is already challenging enough, so I take issue with this approach. I feel the product should incentivize contribution organically, and Glassdoor can only expect fewer posts if they push users away like this. So I created a Chrome extension to remove this: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/clear-glass/fbagenhjkcfdhjifnlcmgdmocbconfol It's open source, and is really simple. It just removes some styles and event listeners: https://github.com/stephenscript/clear-glass Considering doing the same for Blind, which requires you to have a company email to even view the content now. I think finding a job is hard enough without these artificial barriers. Hope someone finds this useful. Good luck on the job search! UPDATE: Thanks for all the feedback and feature requests! I've updated the Clear Glass extension to version 1.1.0, which supports Blind and Repvue, as well as enhances the the speed at which blocking elements are removed from Glassdoor. Please note that Blind has several server-side locked data so some review formats can't be unblocked, but reading posts in threads does work. It seems that in the case for Repvue, all content is revealed. Because they seem to be a smaller operation with pretty niche content, if you find information on their site useful, please contribute with a review if you have experience to share. My goal with this extension is to make job data more accessible, and not to stifle the growth of businesses that are ultimately seeking to do the same. |
