Posting a random Steeler every day until kickoff or I forget - Day 72: Oliver Ross
RT Oliver Ross (2000-2004)
Oliver Ross was selected in the fifth round of the 1998 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys out of Iowa State University. The Cowboys traded their sixth and seventh round picks to the Seattle Seahawks to get him. Ross was considered a raw prospect at the time, having played defensive tackle until his senior year, and played in just 2 games before being released in September.
He then signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, earning a roster spot from the practice squad, but was inactive for most of the season. In 2000, the Eagles assigned him to the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe, but he was released in August. In 2000, he signed was signed to the Steelers practice squad and eventually earned a roster spot in December. In the 2001 season, he played in all 16 games, and started in 8 games at right guard, right tackle, and left tackle due to injuries on the line. In 2002, the Steelers matched an offer from the Cleveland Browns and signed Ross through the 2004 season. By 2004, Ross had earned the starting job and played all 16 games of the season. Throughout his 4 seasons on the active roster, he played in all 64 games ands tarted in 36 of them.
In 2005, he signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an unrestricted free agent and was eventually released in February 2008 after missing the 2007 season with a torn left triceps. He then signed with the New England Patriots, but never played in any games due to a shoulder injury. In 2009, he resigned with the Cardinals but was released before the start of the season.
After leaving the league, Ross managed several rental properties between California and Arizona, and became a certified EMT while volunteering for the Glendale and Phoenix fire departments. He also worked as a coach and athletic director for a local junior college and high schools in Los Angeles and Arizona.

2024.05.14 15:00 Honestly_ Not just EA Sports: *All* NCAA college football game covers & athletes, including Sony's NCAA GameBreaker, Sega Sports, and a few others

With the EA Sports College Football 25 cover being released this Thursday, I thought it would be interesting to look back at all covers — and not just the EA covers, but the athletes featured on covers of rival games by Sony, Sega, and other competitors.
Competition is a good thing. Putting these in chronological order takes me back to the era where there were options (I bought my first game in the '90s, and played a lot of 2k2).
If you count the 2 players that are identifiable off of "College Football USA 96" there have been 36 cover athletes across 34 editions of college football games (plus an active coach, mascot, two band members, and an unidentified player)
This post is going to look cleaner in "old" view. You can swap the "www" with "old" in the URL or just click here.

Various developers:

EA Sports's developers:
  • High Score Productions (1993: Genesis, Sega CD; 1994-96)
  • Visual Concepts (1993: SNES)
  • Tiburon Entertainment (1997-98), bought/renamed EA Tiburon (1999-2013), renamed EA Orlando (2024)
  • Exient Entertainment (2003: N-Gage)
Sega Sports's developers:
  • BlueSky Software (1994-95) [developers of Joe Montana series]
  • Visual Concepts & Avalanche Software (2001-02) [NFL 2K & NFL Blitz, respectively]
Sony Computer Entertainment America's developers:
  • Sony Interactive Studios America (1996-97), renamed Red Zone Interactive (1998-99), renamed 989 Studios (2000)
Aspyr Media's developer:
  • Nerjyzed Entertainment (2007: Windows; 2009: 360)

Further notes:

Bill Walsh was picked because there was an early-theme of having big names on sports video games.
  • EA actually started this back when they were the cool, bad boy of games in the 1980s (I'm that old, they packaged their games like records and put photos of their programmers that made them look like musicians on the back) with the pioneering PC game One on One: Dr. J vs. Larry Bird (1983), later updated to Jordan vs. Bird: One on One (1988).
  • Nintendo got into it by localizing Punch-Out! as Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (1987) for NES. EA brought out John Madden Football (1988) for PC.
  • Sega was wild about this when they launched the Genesis with Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf (1989), Tommy Lasorda Baseball (1989), Pat Riley Basketball (1990), Joe Montana Football (1991).
  • 1993: Bill Walsh! There even was an EA Coach K college hoops game.
Bill Walsh may have got the cover curse:
  • While he had retired from the San Francisco 49ers on top, after winning his 3rd Super Bowl, he had only returned to the Farm for a year when he was picked (he had a good first tenure in the 70s before jumping to the 49ers).
  • In 1992 he took the Cardinal to a Blockbuster Bowl win and a #9 rank. Signed this deal for EA.
  • After the first game came out he had two bad seasons and re-retired for good.
The progression of teams is fun to see.
  • 1993: the top 24 college football teams from 1992 + 24 of the all-time greatest teams since 1978. The teams were unlicensed so they used city and state names, especially where similar to their real names (e.g. Michigan). But you got some fun results like a spirited game of "South Bend, IN" vs "Raleigh, NC"
  • 1994: 36 Division I-A teams, but the bowls were still not included: Instead we get Maple Bowl, Palm Bowl, Pecan Bowl, and Redwood Bowl
  • 1995: first version to feature all (108 at the time) Division l-A teams, the real bowl games like Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, and Rose. Includes older names but also the Pacific Tigers, which actually dropped football before the game was released.
The rights to the title "NCAA" license wasn't obtained by EA until 1998 (as you can see there was an earlier one-off by Mindscape). Its ability to use the NCAA's brands in the the football game was actually the secondary result of a licensing deal intended primarily for an EA "March Madness" basketball game.
Edit: I created this post after I had fun prepping for an episode on this topic for a podcast, if you like this stuff then this episode might be down your alley.

2024.05.14 05:54 bellamcgregoryyy What do I do with my life?

I am a 16 y/o female and a Junior in HS. I don't know what to do with my life. I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA and a 4.42 weighted GPA. I am decently smart and currently #3 in my class of 539 and at the most prestigious school in the state I live in. I check college vine religiously and only safety schools have reached out to me about my profile (Bard College at Simon's Rock + University of Iowa) I am very grateful for the opportunities within each school, but as * I hope* you can tell these are not the best schools I can get into grades wise. Not to mention these are also extremely far from home. I have a few extracurriculars as the head of the art, film, and activism clubs and I also have 12 AP classes and 3 DC classes under my belt. What I’m looking for are some future prospective careers you could see for me, as well as what you did if you had a similar HS situation. As what colleges would you go for, I live in a poverty stricken household and IVY’S are out of the question (also because they are far from home.) Please and thank you for your time and suggestions. (I live in the south hope that helps)

2024.05.14 05:02 LobsterExtreme3318 Why do Midwesterners not agree on where the Midwest is?

I grew up in the northern Great Plains of the US. I always considered myself to live in the Midwest, but in college I met many people from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio. The Great Lakes region basically. They were convinced that they are the Midwest and that anything west of Iowa or even Illinois is solidly NOT Midwestern. It’s funny because people where I’m from would not consider Ohio to be the Midwest. I am aware that the term “Midwest” was created when the Great Lakes region was the Midwestern portion of the country geographically. So honestly I think they are the true Midwest. But how did the Great Plains region end up appropriating this regional identity?

2024.05.14 03:24 tulipsi please give your opinions on these schools and help me choose

Trying to decide what LAC would be the best fit for me. I am pre-health and plan on going to grad schools following my undergrad.
Grinnell- full ride, i’ve heard rigorous academics, isolated in iowa so I would have to either travel or wait until summers to get my shadowing hours in
Macalester- Close to home, lots of opportunities in the twin cities, about 4k a year, i’ve heard their health advising and support is excellent
Colby college- i visited colby, 1k a year, isolated in maine, would have to travel or use breaks for shadowing hours, couldn’t really gauge the vibe on campus? hear lots of mixed opinions
Middlebury- isolated in vermont, did not get to visit but i did enjoy my interview a lot, same issues as the other two LACs, about 4k a year, Lots of good environmental science opportunities which i was planning to minor in

I also got into Case Western (11k) and Villanova (11k) which are two schools I love but I am not sure are worth the extra cost

2024.05.14 01:00 EJC28 Saints 2024 Draft Analysis Compilation

Round 1, Pick 14 - Taliese Fuaga, OT, Oregon State:
NFL: The Saints fill their tackle need with a feisty and powerful brawler who can make an immediate impact along the offensive line. Fuaga's presence will help the unit become more physical, which will only benefit quarterback Derek Carr and the run game.
CBS Sports: B+. He fills a major need for the Saints. They have big-time tackle issues. Fuaga is a nasty player who will start right away. Love it.
ESPN: The Saints picked a position that has been on their radar since the end of the 2023 season, and it checks a lot of boxes for a New Orleans first-round selection. Fuaga was a team captain and two-year starter for Oregon State and played in the Senior Bowl, a game that has produced a lot of Saints players. The question is how fast can he start and where on the line he fits best. Fuaga said he's open to playing on the left side and has been training for that, even though he played right tackle in college. If the Saints move him to the left side, he'll compete with 2022 first-round pick Trevor Penning. If they keep him on the right side, it could signal that the concerns about Ryan Ramczyk's knees are worse than they thought earlier in the offseason.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Is constantly asking teammates for electrical tape.
Round 2, Pick 41 - Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama:
NFL: The secondary figured to be a spot the Saints might attack, and they traded up to land McKinstry. He's a steady, smart, solid corner with good field awareness and decent but not great ball skills. This selection feels like a solid line drive into the gap for a team that needs more reliable defenders.
CBS Sports: B+. Such a clean outside CB prospect. Press man specialty. Physical but not overly grabby. Solid, not spectacular speed. Ball skills meet the standard you want out of a higher-end starter. Good size too. Arguably the best player available. Expensive trade up.
ESPN: The Saints liked McKinstry enough to trade a fifth and sixth-round pick to move up four spots from No. 45 to No. 41. The team nabbed him in the middle of an early Day 2 run on cornerbacks. The addition of McKinstry doesn't mean it's a sure thing that the Saints deal 2017 first-round cornerback Marshon Lattimore, but it does mean that will be a potential move to watch this summer. McKinstry would join Paulson Adebo, Alontae Taylor and potentially Lattimore in the cornerback room, and he said he'd also like to contribute on special teams as a kick returner.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Was the kid who Naruto ran between classes in high school.
Round 5, Pick 150 - Spencer Rattler, QB, South Carolina:
NFL: This is lower than I imagined Rattler going, especially after six quarterbacks all went off the board in the first 12 picks. Rattler is an interesting developmental talent who has some skills that might remind Saints fans of a certain age of Aaron Brooks -- for both good and bad reasons. Well worth the pick here.
CBS Sports: A-. Former huge recruit who once received first-round buzz. Arm talent jumps off the film. Unafraid to make any throw and at South Carolina connected on many of them. Low-level athlete despite some functional movement away from pressure. Accuracy is good, and reads coverages decently. Older prospect but does have upside. Smart investment this late.
ESPN: The Saints added another quarterback just one year after signing Derek Carr and selecting Jake Haener in the fourth round of the 2023 draft. The Saints usually operate in "win now" mode with how they manage the salary cap, but the selection of Rattler indicates the Saints could be looking toward the future at that position. Rattler will compete with Haener for the backup spot behind Carr after the departure of Jameis Winston. Winston came in for Carr several times last season after Carr left three games with injuries.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Glad to be drafted but really wanted a 9-5 desk job as an actuary.
Round 5, Pick 170 - Bub Means, WR, Pittsburgh:
NFL: Means has the speed to dent the WR depth chart in New Orleans and is a good fit for what the Saints do. He has big, reliable hands and can stress a defense deep but never was a featured target in his three college stops.
CBS Sports: B+. Height/weight/speed specimen with the long-striding speed to take the lid off the defense. Tracks it well and can carry out classic possess WR duties on the boundary when he’s not going deep. Some YAC flashes but not his speciality. Prudent add, even though he’s a niche type who won’t separate a ton.
ESPN: The Saints fill another need, adding a wide receiver to account for the departure of Michael Thomas. Means ran a 4.43 second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine this year to go along with 721 yards and six touchdowns at Pitt. Means will join No.1 wideout Chris Olave, speedy Rashid Shaheed, A.T. Perry and veteran Cedrick Wilson. Dennis Allen said earlier in the offseason that they were looking for another pass catcher, and Means will join a new Saints coaching staff with a potentially revamped offense.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Is convinced if he messages the mods enough, they’ll finally listen to him.
Round 5, Pick 175 - Jaylan Ford, LB, Texas:
NFL: A thickly built thumper with monotone play speed, Ford thrives with instincts and tape study. Does he have enough athleticism to make it as more than a two-down defender? We shall see.
CBS Sports: B. Lengthy middle linebacker with some suddenness to his game. Wasted movement appear on film, so do impressive plays on the football in coverage. Not an overly physical or high-motor defender. Sifts through traffic well. Has starter traits because of his three-down ability. Although he must tackle more soundly.
ESPN: Ford will add linebacker depth and versatility, as he played both inside linebacker and outside linebacker at Texas. 35-year-old Demario Davis and Pete Werner will take the majority of the snaps, with new signee Willie Gay rotating in if the Saints are playing base defense. That means that Ford will likely be a depth piece and a special-teams player to begin his career.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Can only spell bananas by singing Holaback Girl. There is choreography too.
Round 6, Pick 199 - Khristian Boyd, DT, Northern Iowa:
NFL: He's not a great playmaker, but Boyd's mass and bull-like strength could give him a chance to be an early-down nose tackle. He's tough and reliable with good stamina.
CBS Sports: B+. Big-bodied NT with athletic prowess. Rushes tend to get high, and while he converts speed to power on occasion, if he sunk the pad level, he could be a very powerful defensive lineman. Pass-rush move arsenal isn’t barren just not relied upon often. Unique NT with DT abilities.
ESPN: The 24-year-old comes in with a lot of college experience, having started his career in 2018. The Saints like to rotate their defensive linemen, so he'll join a rotation that includes Bryan Bresee, Khalen Saunders and Nathan Shepherd. He said he prides himself on stopping the run, but also had 6.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks at Northern Iowa in 2023.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: He is aiming to be the greatest player ever picked 199th.
Round 7, Pick 239 - Josiah Ezirim, OT, Eastern Kentucky:
NFL: Ezirim is a converted D-lineman with two years of OL play under his belt. His outstanding mass could serve him well if the Saints are patient with Ezirim's development.
CBS Sports: A. Starter-caliber size and length to play OT at the next level. Natural power jumps off the film. Better getting across the line than climbing to second level. Grip strength is very good. Well-balanced. Not a freaky athletic specimen but has clean film. More OT help for Saints.
ESPN: It wasn't a surprise that the Saints continued to look for offensive line depth after using a first-round pick on an offensive tackle. Ezirim was a former nose tackle who moved to the offensive line during the 2021 season and became a permanent starter at RT for the last two seasons. At 6-5 and 329 pounds, he'll be the heaviest player on the team next to new OL Oli Udoh. He'll start out as a depth player.
NFL Absolutely Not Fake News: Has a really nice fountain pen collection.

2024.05.13 23:59 Cassandrae_Gemini New fans: How are you choosing which teams to cheer for? Anybody else cheering for multiple teams? If so, which teams?

Just wanted to chat with other new fans about which teams they are cheering for.
I assume most people are picking teams based on either rookies they like or their geographic area. Are people picking multiple teams for cheer for or just one?
For me personally, I am 200 miles and 3 states away from the nearest wnba team, so I don't feel any obligatory need to cheer for them for a geographic reason.
I'm picking my teams based on college stars I really liked, and I decided that the easiest way for me to quickly learn more about the league would be to follow a few teams closely and by watching their games regularly, I will not only learn their rosters, but quickly learn the opposing teams as well just out of sheer repetition.
I'm one of those "basic bitch" CC fans that got back into women's basketball last year after years away from the sport because I loved Iowa's run-and-gun team this past season. So, predictably, I'll be cheering for the Fever and Aces (<3 <3 Kate Martin). My other favorite rookie is Rickea Jackson, so I'm going to follow the Sparks as well. I figure this combination of teams will also give me a good idea of the range of skill in the league, as the Aces are at the top, the Fever are middle-ish, and the Sparks are completely rebuilding. So... I'm following the players I am really interested in, but in a way that's somewhat strategic.
I'm personally REALLY EXCITED for the start of the season tomorrow.
To the other new fans: who are you cheering for and why, and are you cheering fofollowing multiple teams or no? What are you excited about?

2024.05.13 17:19 ClassAt4am Concert question

Concert question
Hi, I know this may be considered deprecation but I have a question for people from Iowa at concerts. To preface I am not originally from here and have lived here for almost 10 years so I feel like at this point I should have some idea of Iowinian behavior. I was recently at the Cake concert and it seemed like no one was enjoying the concert or dancing. Now, I understand that everyone enjoys things differently but this was a substantial amount of the crowd. I understand that Cake isn’t a band that have music that’s super danceable but still I was moving at grooving while it seemed the people around me were just kind of there. I also went to a Squeeze concert a couple years ago and it was the same kind of situation. I went with my parents and they were up and moving. I also saw the same band a couple years prior while I was in college living in Dublin, people at that concert were dancing and singing along and not sitting down for most of the show. So I’m not sure if it’s a culture thing or if people are just going to concerts to have something to do on their weekend.

2024.05.13 15:10 Fresh-Insect-5670 What’s your worst migraine blunder?

I’ll go. I was driving from Minneapolis to Iowa City, about a 5 hour drive, in the middle of a snowstorm in college. A migraine decided to make its presence. I hade to puke so I decided to pull off on the closest exit to do so. Not only did I not pull over fast enough, I ended up getting stuck on an exit ramp in the middle of nowhere Iowa. I had to call a tow truck to get me out. So, once I got out I had 3 more hours to drive with a pounding headache and puke all over me. Fun times.

COMMON APP ESSAY (Prompt 1) - My essay was about growing up in a Hispanic and Catholic household as a twin and how the culture affected our brotherhood and views in the world (11/10, this essay cooked)
SCHOOL SUPPLEMENTS: - I wanna keep this short so I’d say my best essays were UIUC, COLGATE, UCHICAGO, and Wisconsin Madison - I should’ve done better for my Questbridge schools LOR’S - I’m thankful for all my LOR’s and I think they were all (8.5-10/10). I was close with all the teachers and coach’s/leaders that wrote them
Interviews: - WashU 10/10: I think this interview was really good and my interviewer said good things about me and how I’d be a good fit ( at least that’s what he told me who knows what he wrote down)
Decisions QUESTBRIDGE MATCH: 1. Notre dame, 2.Uchicago 3. Northwestern 4.WashU ( Did not match, this was the start of my villain Arc Dec 1😈)
EA: UIUC ( Deffered) Notre Dame (Deffered ) Uchicago (Deffered)
QUESTBRIDGE RD: Grinnell- Waitlisted Denison- Waitlisted UVA- Rejected Uchicago- Rejected College of the holy cross- Waitlisted Boston College- Rejected Williams college- Waitlisted (I was shocked at this one I thought I’d get rejected, only waitlist I’m joining) Colgate- Waitlisted Vanderbilt- Rejected Notre dame-rejected Northwestern- Rejected WashU- Rejected 🥲 (My interviewer lied for sure)
COMMON APP RD (ALL W’s IN THE CHAT) UIUC- ACCEPTED ( Commiting) Wisconsin Madison- ACCEPTED CAE SCHOLAR (full ride) UMICH- ACCEPTED Loyola Chicago, Miami- Ohio ( I applied to the wrong Miami lmao), Dayton, NIU, Marquette, Iowa, Dominican - ACCEPTED (Honors, Presidental scholarships, etc)
Additional info: - I added a lot of personal circumstances I sadly went through high school, and balancing my time with school, work, and extracurriculars ( I got a C in my mid year report). I feel like this is really important and to take advantage of this section.
Thoughts/ REFLECTION: - I am so happy with my results, UIUC was always my dream school, and I let the idea of other schools get in the way and honestly I went through so much with Questbridge but I will never regret it, I’m glad with the results I got. I met amazing people through the process, but common app is definitely the way to go if you want more space for EC’s , QB for your story. It hit me at first, but RD is finally over and I think I had a pretty successful journey. Advice - Search for opportunities to explore your college options, I wish I knew about Questbridge and fly-in programs, etc. that would strengthen my application. Continue to work hard, dedicated, and push, it’s gonna be a long ride but once you reach the end it’ll be all worth it. God bless everyone 🙏🏾.

2024.05.13 03:28 YSL4lif21 What should I rate this studio apartment in downtown Cedar Rapids, IA [USA]?

So i needed a place for the second semester of college. I booked this place in downtown Cedar Rapids Iowa. It was a studio that came with a bathroom. It was $1,114 a month before tax, and was slightly discounted because I booked it for 4 months. Given that this place was perfectly livable, there were quite a few things that were poorly managed. I’m going to list them below please help me decide what I should rate this place.
1: Missing battery in the smoke detector. (Smoke detector is too high for me to reach even using a chair) 2: Toilet hinge is not properly installed (one screw either; doesn’t fit or is not screwed in properly because it moves around every time you sit on it). 3: Toilet roll holder fell off the wall on first use. 4: Plastic towel holder fell off the wall (cheap piece of plastic that could barely hold one towel. It was the only towel holder available on the wall) 5: The drain was clogged with hair that wasn’t mine (I’m a M22 with a buzz cut, it wasn’t mine 🤮) 6: The cold water faucet on the shower leaks from the base and collects on the edge of the tub, then leaks on to the bathroom floor. (It leaves a huge puddle and there’s a slight elevation to the bathroom so it leaks into the main room) 7: Every once and a while a centipede would crawl on the wall (I killed 3 in total, not a big deal but them shits close to my head when I sleep)
I’ve been debating if I should rate it a 3 stars or 4 stars. Or should it be rated less. For a little background context this a new listing that had no reviews, however the host was highly rated so I wasn’t worried. I never brought any of these up to the host, mainly because I didn’t want people in my place when I wasn’t there, and also thought they weren’t quick fixes. What do you think, any suggestions are appreciated.

2024.05.12 23:37 MajorPhoto2159 If Realignment Mimicked the NFL Structure

Introduction

Disclaimer:

I want to clarify that this is a purely hypothetical scenario for a college football realignment, inspired by NFL structures. Although the current trend might seem to lean towards major shifts, this project is just for fun and born out of curiosity. It features 32 teams, organized into two conferences with four divisions each. The grouping is based on geographical proximity and existing rivalries as much as possible.

Methodology

I initially developed a detailed ranking system based on several criteria, but for simplicity, I adopted a pre-existing model that evaluates teams based on:
The data is sourced from 2022, and you can check out the article here.

Power 32 Division Alignment

Division 1: East

Group Teams
Northeast Penn State, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Kentucky
Southeast Georgia, Florida, Clemson, South Carolina
Great Lakes Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Michigan State
Gulf Coast Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Mississippi State

Division 2: West

Group Teams
Southwest Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State
Midwest Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Arkansas
Pacific Southern Cal, UCLA, Oregon, Washington
Atlantic Coast Florida State, Miami, Tennessee, Mississippi

Power 64 Division Alignment

Division 1: East

Group Teams
Northeast Rutgers, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Maryland
Southeast Atlantic North Carolina, NC State, Virginia, Louisville
South Georgia Tech, UCF, Indiana, Purdue
Midwest Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State

Division 2: West

Group Teams
Pacific Stanford, California, Washington State, Oregon State
Southwest Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, Colorado
Texas Texas Tech, TCU, Baylor, BYU
Northern Central Minnesota, Northwestern, Illinois, Boise State
Some groupings might seem unconventional, but they were fun to explore. I'm curious about your thoughts and any tweaks you might suggest. What matchups would you be excited about in these proposed divisions?

2024.05.12 20:35 Wide-Ad-9534 Record Video about Iowa for 20 dollars

Hey Iowa!
I’m a college student who’s interested in Midwestern literature. Many of the books I’m reading right now are, hopefully, representative of your state and the people who live there. But I don’t want to only read fiction. I want to hear real stories, from people like you!
If you’re willing, please record a one minute video of yourself answering the following questions (1) Why do you live in Iowa? (2) What do you like and/or dislike about Iowa? and (3) Why should I move to Iowa?
Please note this video is for research purposes only, and will only be shown to an audience of about 15 people in my seminar who are interested in learning more about you and your state.
Pls send your video as an mp4 or equivalent to [georgewillardproductions@gmail.com](mailto:georgewillardproductions@gmail.com)
I've tried this a couple times but no luck. If you submit a video to the email and provide a Venmo or PayPal, I'll send you 20. Also please feel free to DM me if skeptical. I can show you the assignment on the syllabus.

2024.05.12 19:29 rpv123 Does anyone here have a child that has tested as gifted AND neurodivergent? What are your plans when homeschool is out of the question? What are you doing to support and protect your kid?

In my area it seems like most parents of gifted neurodivergent kids pull them from school entirely. It’s a nice pipedream, but not in the cards for us as we need the dual income, so our son wouldn’t be able to homeschool until maybe 4th or 5th grade when one of us could work from home and he could handle working so independently. But he’s also a super social kid, so I don’t know if he’d even want to be homeschooled (although we do struggle with school fatigue/refusal some days.)
Currently it seems like our best option is to make sure his elementary school is continuing to meet his needs (ours seems to be challenging him enough - it’s a secular private school with small classes that has a Montessori/Waldforf vibe even if it’s not officially following either philosophy. It is very individualized/project based, however. ) My ability to send him there is directly linked to my job and a tuition discount, so hopefully I can continue to send him.
I do feel bad for just signing him up for the cheap day camp in our town this summer, however. On the plus side he’ll meet more kids from the neighborhood which I think is important because we just moved a few months ago and he doesn’t go to the neighborhood school. I’m wondering if I should be doing more enrichment for him over the summer or after camp or on weekends and am feeling a little guilty because the neuropsych who assessed him strongly encouraged that we enroll him in programs geared towards gifted kids and especially look into tech camps. But those are crazy expensive and all booked up. Are there online programs I can look into for after school/weekends?
It’s also worth mentioning that I was called gifted and grew up in a working class family that couldn’t do much about it, so I have some complicated feelings about the label - I did 45 minutes a week of a special class with the other “smart” kids based on our Iowa test scores for, like, 2 years and then got put in an honors middle school group where I floundered so badly on math (yay, undiagnosed dyscalculia and ADHD) that I got kicked out of the program for low grades. I also started drinking heavily in 8th grade and have since learned that substance abuse isn’t uncommon for gifted kids, and neurodivergent kids. I kicked the alcohol habit by 9th grade and caught up again in HS and eventually managed to get into college, but like most parents, I want better for my kid.
