Help a Newbie decide

2024.05.14 22:11 Markbrian1231 Help a Newbie decide

I have notice of termination, reason is under performance and I am still on probationary period. So we have like 5 types of trainings before regularization, I am on the 3rd part now. The maintaining average/score for overall is 85% and I am merely points away to meet the 85%. Still, I failed to achieve the maintaining score for the most recent training. The environment and people are good and easily adaptable but it is night shift, but hybrid setup.
This is my first job, as a fresh grad last ber months, I applied by last week of January and hired by February, I've got ABOVE average salary with the company so you can tell that the company I am working for is high standard. What can I do to avoid termination record for the good of my career for long? Can I file for resignation and what shall I include in resignation letter?
Thanks

2024.05.14 21:58 callmejellycat I am a salaried restaurant/bar manager scheduled 50hrs a week (5days x 10hrs) sometimes 6 days. My offer letter says nothing about required hours. I am also newly pregnant. I do not get overtime and do not get breaks. Is this amount of hours legal?

I work in California and my salary is $73k before taxes. They work us into the ground. I do not get any real breaks and do not receive overtime. I am occasionally scheduled for 6 day work weeks. I frequently am at work longer than 10hrs. Last week was 62+ hours. Do I have any legal recourse or protections? My offer letter is vague and says nothing about my required working hours.
We are corporate. I know they’ve been sued at least twice in the last 9 months from previous employees at our location (1 of 3 locations), but unsure of reasoning.
Is this legal to require so many working hours from us without extra compensation?

2024.05.14 21:53 Yerkysanwich Support banned my account and never verified me

I have fully complied with everything Freewallet has asked me to do in order to get my account back. All I did wrong to get my account frozen was mistype the ending of my email by one letter spelling it as .con instead of .com I have btc in the account I’m just trying to remove it. It’s been 5 days since I verified my account I didn’t expect it to be immediately but 5 days is crazy. I’ve heard story’s of people saying it takes 30 days after verification I’ve heard people say they never get their account back. Please read this sub Reddit and listen to the consumers who have been having problems before u deposit crypto to Freewallet. Customer service is horrendous and the fees are crazy, u even need to pay a “network fee” to get ur private keys. No other wallet works like that I suggest if ur thinking about using Freewallet u use a different wallet.

2024.05.14 20:59 Impressive-Law10 Opinions on Avisto (Advans group)

Hi there, by chance, will this post catch an eye of someone, who has heard about Avisto company? I am currently working in France (Sophia Antipolis) for a CAC40 company and I am thinking about changing jobs. I have an opportunity to interview for a position in mentioned Avisto. This opportunity seems interesting and the salary isn't bad. I have two major question marks -
What is your opinion about this company if you've heard about it? How is it seen in french market?
I searched the company site, Glassdoor, Indeed, LinkedIn.. but I am still not sure if it isn't just another consultant/contractor company (I do not intend to go into consulting..). Any tea?

2024.05.14 20:53 thatone0897 Current Staff Accountant Salary expectations

Just graduated college with my Bachelor in Accounting (no cpa and dont plan to) and I'm expecting an offer letter from the firm I've been interning with all semester (they came to me and told me it's on it's way). I've been researching what a good starting salary is currently for staff accountants in southwestern PA and I've seen that it's around $40-$60k depending on certain factors. I'm not a good negotiator but want to be prepared to do so, and want to know accurate market salaries too.
Anyone have any input on what I should expect? I know that benefits play into this, starting PTO is 18 days I believe and they offer health, dental/vision and 401k or Roth options. Thanks!!

2024.05.14 20:52 aspiring-tailor UK Contractor living in Spain

I've just moved to Spain and I'm still operating as a UK contractor, I have my own UK Ltd company providing tech consultancy services, of which I'm the only employee.
This is a bit complicated because in Spain things operate differently, the main problem being that you have to register as autónomo, which means that they technically count everything you invoice as your salary, and calculate your tax bill based off that. I'm concerned that they won't take into account the tax being paid on this in the UK (corporation tax and VAT). Has anybody else been in a similar boat - any advice or knowledge to share?

2024.05.14 20:41 tiredjobseeker [CA] Third-party background check verifier unable to verify past overseas employment

Hi, Thank you for anyone reading and trying to help with this. I am writing this as I don't know what next steps are.
I have been recently hired for a finance position in one of the reputed company. The company has contracted Sterlingcheck for the background check verification. I have not lied at all on my resume, and I have people who can back me up for the same. The problem is, the Sterlingcheck notified my previous US employer but they are not properly contacting the previous employers who are international (India). One of the previous emplyer told me that Sterlingcheck straight away sent "unable to locate your email" on their company email! I am not sure what else I can (or could have) provided more than the company email. (I have already provided them with the experience letters as given by my past employers at the time of resignation)
Also, another past employer uses gmail.com domain email address which isn't very professional but they are a small company and hence they didn't want to spend money on getting a domain name for their email at the time (this was 6-7 years ago).
All the past employers have given me experience letter (or equivalent) for my time over there and I have left all the jobs without any liabilities and on good terms with all of them.
My question is, if Sterlingcheck doesn't do the employement check as intended for overseas employers, are my chances slim on getting this job? Is there any way I can explain this to the HR at the new company and find out more information on the same?
I really appreciate your time for the same.
TLDR - Past employement verification by the third party background checker for overseas employers is probably not getting done correctly and wanted to know if I can explain the situation to my future employer HR.

I received this email, and I have a benefits verification letter with just my birthday (no amount). The application says I’m only 90% through the application process. Do these things mean I’m probably approved, just not officially? I haven’t had an appointment with an SSI doc yet.

2024.05.14 19:55 Cheesybox I feel like I'm vastly underpaid

In a nutshell, I've got a BS in Computer Engineering, 3 years of experience doing FPGA hardware security research for a DoD contractor (where I also got a security clearance) and now have a few months experience doing firmware after getting laid off from the DoD contractor job.
I live in eastern Virginia and currently make $83k/year. Finances have felt tight for a while though. I know everything has gotten more expensive and specifically in my case, an increase from getting out of a shitty overcosted apartment to a house with a high mortgage rate, and my mental health costs going up too due to a change in insurance between jobs.
I'm wondering if my feelings have any validity. The only openings I'm finding require more and/or niche experience so they aren't great for comparisons with my current position, or other entry level positions that are in high COL areas that are underpaid. Some examples are government contracting jobs where the salaries are around $70k/year in the DC area, which is a really low salary.
Tl;dr I'm not happy with my salary or my career progress or my career trajectory. I don't know if it's just the economy being garbage or if I'm actually underpaid and that I should be looking for another job to ease my budgetary woes.

2024.05.14 19:47 Scotto6UK Withdrawal of Job Offer / Contract Dispute

Obviously, I'll be vague about the more sensitive or identifiable details, but here is a rundown of what has happened.
Recently moved back from overseas and looking for employment. This is in England.
Nov '23 - Interviewed for a role. I was told I was the last person to be interviewed on the way out, but an interviewer corrected that as an Executive was wondering whether to approach someone else about the role. A couple of days later I was told that I wasn't successful, but that they're putting me forward for another role that I might be suitable for.
Dec '23 - Meeting about the other role. It sounded great, and it was strongly suggested that I was the only candidate for the role. I got positive feedback and was told by the person in Talent (let's call them TK) that there needed to be a meeting to confirm the specifics of the role. This got pushed back a few times and I was told that it was definitely going ahead in the new year. As I had been living with family whilst I found my feet, I asked for a firm assurance that it would as I needed to move for the role, and my living arrangements were increasingly unstable and I'd need to move to a different city. I got firm assurance, and so my girlfriend and I moved into a flat closeby with a year's lease.
Jan - Feb '24 - The meeting kept being pushed back, or was vague. TK didn't keep me up to date and wouldn't always reply to texts/emails within a reasonable time. I got repeated assurance that the job was going ahead shortly. I was eventually told the job description had been finalised and I was sent a copy to review. I read it and said I was happy to move forward. I was emailed a conditional offer of employment document that was referred to as a contract. The conditions were;
  1. Evidence I am eligible to work in the UK
  2. Successful medical
  3. Satisfactory references
  4. Evidence of qualifications
  5. Security clearances (incl overseas checks for the 2 countries I'd lived in outside of UK)
  6. Successful 12 week probation
  7. Agreement that employer can deduct any liabilities from salary
  8. Acceptance of T&Cs in job offer letter
I signed the document and returned it. The week afterwards, I attended my medical and provided my ID documents for the checks to be carried out. The week after that, TK called to say that a new Executive had decided to take a different strategic direction and that the team I would be a part of had been pulled. For this reason, my job offer was withdrawn. I asked about the contract that I'd signed and TK said that they'd check. They called back the next day to explain that my overseas checks hadn't come back yet so they didn't owe me anything.
March - May '24 - I wanted to see if my checks would eventually come back, as that would satisfy another of the 8 conditions. My UK and one of the overseas ones came back clear, but the second overseas one was cancelled by the employer. I had independently had one carried out in this process and that came back clear, so I know I wouldn't have failed it. Following ACAS rules, I had already informally raised my concern over the phone, and so a formal grievance was the next step. The job offer had been withdrawn, but there had been no conversation around the document that was referred to as a contract, not even verbally. In that document, there are two sentences next to each other that are a little unclear:
Your notice period to \employer* will be 3 months from either side.*
\employer* will give you 1 month's notice for the first 4 years of employment and an additional 1 week for each additional full year of service up to a maximum of 12.*
These are right next to each other, but seem to contradict. I've also never seen the phrase "from either side" before.
In my grievance, I explained the negative effect this has had on my financial stability and mental health, and pointed out the notice period above. I also mentioned that I was now locked into living in an unfamiliar city, and that my future job search was now very limited to the area. I didn't ask for a specific outcome, just that I'd like to start a constructive dialogue and that I'd like to see their grievance policy. They've replied and reinforced their position that they don't contractually owe me anything as I didn't satisfy condition 6 - the probation. They also said that they'd offer 4 weeks' wages as an ex gratia. I haven't replied, as I'd like to properly understand my options.
Questions
  1. How do you interpret the notice period?
  2. Can a company withdraw a job offer and a contract without honouring a notice period for the reasons they've given (change of strategic direction / haven't completed probation). I haven't been given a chance to complete the probation and so it's not like I've underperformed or been frequently absent.
  3. Is there a difference between a job offer and a contract, and do both have to be formally withdrawn?
  4. Am I right in saying that because they haven't followed the ACAS Code of Practice for Grievances?
  5. Do you think I have a case that is worth pursuing in ACAS' Early Conciliation / Tribunal?
  6. Is there anything else I've missed?
Thanks so much, this has been a huge headache over the last 6 months.

My Experience: Job Search in Berlin [Detailed Post]
https://preview.redd.it/r7jfwloeff0d1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=9f595df7fdb7a6048505ec2ddcb29cee0b64bc47
Hi, I hope this is considered relevant to the sub. I wanted to post this on the berlin sub but my diagram keeps on getting removed. Reddit's been such a great resource for my job hunt and I'd like to give something back.

My background:

MSc in Social Science from a non-German university, 29 years old and 3 years of work experience, not counting work experience gained during uni and not counting internships. I'm an EU citizen, but not German. My German is pretty much fluent - I didn't grow up here, but my dad is a native German speaker. Basically, I speak it without an accent and understand everything with no issue at all but am not very eloquent and can't express myself as well as I can in English. I make minor grammatical errors here and there.

Duration:

The whole process took 2 months; I started looking for a job around mid March and signed my contract yesterday.

Job searching process:

I went through LinkedIn, Xing, Indeed and Stepstone every day. I applied for English as well as German-speaking jobs, based in either Berlin or the EU (remote). I applied both for jobs in industry as well as ÖD, although ÖD was not my preference. I only applied for permanent and full-time positions. I didn't focus on a specific type of job or field, but more on my own skills, experience and interest. Broadly speaking most jobs I applied for were in analytics (but not data analyst jobs).

Applications:

I think I had a good rate of interest taken in my applications. For 1 in 3 jobs I applied for, I was invited to a first interview. The jobs that I was rejected for outright were mostly those that I was underqualified/not experienced enough for and was not expecting to get anyway. I tailored my CV to each specific job, highlighting previous experiences and responsibilities that seemed the most relevant and removing things that didn't seem important at all. I also wrote a cover letter for almost every job, provided they did not explicitly specify that they didn't want one, and even if the cover letter was only an optional part of the application. I didn't get ghosted too much, so that was nice, only about 1 in 4 times.

1st Round:

The first round interviews were a breeze, there isn't much to say here. I received a rejection for 2 out of 13 first interviews. One was because I didn't have experience working with a certain program (was listed as optional on the ad though), the other was a really difficult first round that was more a second round interview than anything else in the sense that it was really technical and I was interviewed by a panel instead of just a person from HR. Still a positive experience, though. The withdrawals were due to: coincided with received offer, salary too low, or just not into the job after all.

2nd Round:

4 out of 6 rejected me after the second round, tbh these rejections kind of stung a bit. One of the unexplained rejections I got was actually after an interview that went extremely well - I really left thinking that I was their unicorn and that the job was mine lol. I still wonder who ended up getting that job.
But generally speaking, the main issue I encountered was how hard it was to interview in German (I already described my language skills above). The first rounds were always easy, but the second rounds were tougher. Coming up with good answers to situation-based questions spontaneously or just BS'ing in German was quite hard. There was still no interview that I completely bombed, luckily enough.
2 out of the 4 companies that rejected me offered feedback calls which was really nice. Just 10 minute phone calls, no video, where they explained to me why they made their decision. The overall feedback I got was pretty vague but boiled down to some of the responses I gave not being detailed enough. I appreciate companies that take the time to do this.

3rd Round:

I only had 2 of these, but my impression is that if you get to the final round (I didn't encounter a company or job that required more than 3 rounds of interviews) your chances are already pretty good.

Final offer and Salary €:

I'm not in love with the job I ended up accepting, my main issue being that the work sounds boring, very bureaucratic and also meaningless. At the same time, everyone I met throughout the process was very nice, they have an office here but they're cool about WFH and additionally I'll be able to work remotely from abroad for 6 weeks a year. So I'm excited to start and overall happy with the opportunity. The salary they offered me is 60k, which I think is good but is probably not according to Reddit's standards. But honestly, as helpful as reading through job-related posts here was, it was also helpful to touch grass, speak with real people that I know and understand that not everyone can be earning 70k+ in their mid twenties, even people in tech. The jobs I was able to get interviews for were all mid-level and had allocated budgets in the range of high 40's to low 60's, which I thought was really broad, but maybe this info could still be helpful to other people with a similar background. I didn't negotiate because the offered salary was already higher than what I was expecting, and also because I needed a job, and also because I genuinely think it's a good salary and is definitely more than enough for me. I've put it into various brutto-netto calculators and expect that I'll easily be able to save almost ~1.5k a month.

Conclusions:

I think I underestimated how how hard it was going to be. My main problem was that there were just not that many jobs to apply for in the first place. I browsed through a lot of job-related subs and noticed how many applications other people are able to churn out, but that was simply not my experience. It was the worst feeling ever to wake up, spend hours browsing various job platforms but have to end the day without sending off an application. My previous job here in Berlin was a freelancing gig that ended unexpectedly, so I didn't qualify for any assistance from the government and was living purely off of my savings, which was very stressful. On the upside, being unemployed meant that I was at least really flexible when it came to making appointments for interviews.
I have a lot of friends who live in more rural areas (Germany and EU countries generally), and I have the impression that they have an easier time getting hired. None of them have had a job hunt that lasted more than a month. I was always under the impression that people move to bigger cities because finding a job is supposed to be easier there, but I guess it really depends on your line of work.
Anyway, I ultimately I think I got lucky! Finding a job really is a numbers game.

Unfortunately, he passed away, but nearly a year later, I find myself still ensnared in this debt trap.l earn a monthly income of 12 thousand rupees from my job, supplemented by an additional 2 thousand rupees from home tuition. Despite this, it remains insufficient.
As the sole earner in my family, I am struggling to repay the debt, exacerbated by the fact that all the EMI dates from different apps coincide. The total amount I owe is 1 lakh 50 thousand rupees, a sum that seems insurmountable given my current salary and tuition fees. Over the past year, I've attempted various tactics to avoid defaulting on loans, including taking out new loans to repay older ones and considering selling assets, but I've now exhausted all options.
I feel mentally drained and hopeless.I am at a loss and see no light at the end of the tunnel. I implore you all to offer guidance on what steps I can take. Unfortunately, I cannot turn to relatives for further financial assistance, as many have already supported my family during my father's treatment, and they too have modest incomes like mine.

2024.05.14 18:33 Nevertoldanyone1 Laid off the same week as first child is due: Trying to get a plan in place and keep my head in the game.

Last week it was announced to the entire company that they ran out of money and will stop operations this week. It was a surprise to the majority of us but it turns out that the leadership made some poor decisions that left us exposed financially. Additionally, the company moved locations and offered me relocation just over a year ago, a lot of my professional network is 2000+ miles away. The big kick in the rear was the fact that they are giving us next to no severance (2 weeks).
At the same time, my wife (33) is 40 weeks pregnant with our first child. I (33) was the breadwinner and my wife left her job when she got was in the 3rd trimester. The plan was for her to stay home for 4-6 months at first and look into part time jobs after that. My salary was enough to cover our basis . For the birth, the we went the midwife route, but that wasn't covered under insurance and we paid cash for it not to long ago.
Right now, we will have 22k in savings if I include my last paycheck. Below are what I already budget on a regular basis.
So with things kept the same "as-is", its approx 4600/mo in expenses, or just shy of 5 months of expenses. I think I can trim my budget down to 4200/mo with just my food expense being scaled way back I can push it past the 5 month mark. I will qualify for unemployment, just unsure of how much yet, it looks like between 1700/2200mo if my research is correct. Until that is all in place though, I worry lol. I also know that we will have more expenses once the kid is born, but we do have a nice stash of diapers from family/friends. My overall plan is this:
I know that I am nowhere near "desperate", I have seen some posts here that easily qualify as way more precarious than the situation I find myself in. I cannot ignore the fact that this all goes belly up if for some reason we were to have a medical issue or unexpected expense. I cannot ignore the stress/anxiety I have after moving across the country, about to have a kid any day now and then to lose your income. I welcome any and all feedback/experiences/ideas.

2024.05.14 18:32 Useful-Progress1490 Need help finding a job after submitting resignation

So I have been searching for jobs with 3 months notice period and I was not getting any response. As soon as I started mentioning 1 month, I got more opportunities and finally some offers. I thought once I have offer maybe I'll be able to negotiate my way by either doing buyoff from my current company or maybe the new company may accept 3 months notice.
My goal was ideally to get good increment in my current role by showing my current letter. It has backfired in a very unusual way. They are okay to let me go but I need to server 3 months notice matter what. Also, the new employer is saying that if I can't get the notice down to 45 days, he will not consider me. Also, I am not very willing to go there because the salary structure is very bad and I didn't negotiate with him earlier on the structure.
Now I am on notice period of 3 months without any offer in hand and I am feeling very stressed. If anyone can refer me for a role I will be more than grateful. Any constructive advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Edit:
I have 4 years of experience as a Devops engineer and I can code in Python and Go. My main skills are AWS, Terraform,Ansible and Jenkins. I can also share my resume if needed. Thanks.

Return Being Reviewed But Didn't Get Any Letter From IRS
So I'm not a US citizen. This is the first time I actually filed for a tax return and not a credit towards next years tax return.
This is what I see when I check my refund status. I don't know where to go from here. I've already called the helpline number but they've not been of much help regarding my situation.
I've uploaded my verification documents on the verify your identity and tax return information link but it asks me for a letter from the IRS which I haven't received! I already have manually requested another letter multiple times and it's been more than 6 weeks since I filed my return.
Any help would be appreciated!

2024.05.14 17:22 banan_lord Sketchy offer letter with completely different position

Hi, so after a very chaotic and weird interview process I went through I received an offer letter. The salary is almost too good to be true and the position is suddenly completely different. I applied for an Azure Product Engineer Role, they later told me that my tasks will be mainly billing and the subscriptions, though earlier I had a technical interview about the basics of networking and cloud infrastructure??¿¿ And now in the offer letter the position is called Senior Cloud Computing Engineer?¿ I mean would be great to jump in the current job market from junior to senior, but it all seems sketchy. Like the company is legit, it's not a scam, though they mention on their main page that you should watch out for that. The reviews I read on the internet are terrible, like some didn't even got their salary end of the last year. The office is overcrowded and it's apparently complete chaos. So I am contemplating about rejecting the offer though it might look good on my resume, but I am not sure if I am mentally capable to go through idk 2 years of being in such an environment. I also feel guilty because I know that the job market is a mess nowadays and I feel bad rejecting it... What would you guys advise me to do?

2024.05.14 17:05 Born-Relationship-94 MEP or Defense Contracting for an EE soon-to-be graduate

Hello all,
I am graduating in a few days with a degree in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College (small school in NYC). I had a project engineering internship at a subcontractor in FL, and as a data scientist/engineer at PepsiCo Research & Development. Was not able to get a return offer from PepsiCo, and the subcontractor is not in a location I would like. Currently, I have an offer from General Dynamics Electric Boat (a defense contractor), and Jaros, Baum, and Boles an MEP firm in NYC. Moreover, does anyone have thoughts of MEP vs Defense? I wasn't a big fan of my subcontracting internship, which is closer to MEP then my internship at PepsiCo.
JBB salary is $83k with a HCOL (NYC).
GDEB salary is $79k with a LCOL in eastern Connecticut. Would also get a secret clearance.
Worried I should have looked into MEP, rather then dismissing it and feeling like defense contracting was "bettecooler" because its more hardcore engineering. I, narrow mindedly, view MEP as mostly working on blueprints all day long.
