2024.05.14 15:46 queefburglar6669 fighting w family

slight backstory: i’m 24f. i had to move back home last summer (july 2023) for the 2nd time after being SA & losing my job. went to a mental health residential facility for 2 months after SA incident.
so lately i’ve been fighting w my mom, dad & sister. sister is barely talking to me & she’s usually away at school. it’s been esp bad w my mom, but it’s bad all around. to their defense, i had slacked off on some of the chores around the house. i’ve started getting better at that since they brought it to my attention abt a little over a month ago. it doesn’t seem to be quite enough for them yet in that area. but the area they are most concerned abt is my mental health issues. i have been diagnosed w BPD, OCD, & PTSD.
they say they want me to get better, & i’ve asked them for specifics on what “getting better” would look like & they can’t give me a specific answer. i’ve been looking over my DBT & CBT binder from the residential facility. i don’t have every single acronym or coping skill memorized, & im basically re-teaching myself CBT & DBT.
i go to therapy once a week, i have 2 jobs & i’m not isolating myself & im seeing friends. i feel like i’ve been making strides in my mental health but they don’t seem to agree, or maybe my recovery just doesn’t look like what they imagined? i’m trying so hard everyday to just make it thru the day, & it’s every other, if not everyday, that i get lectured at or yelled at abt how i need to do better.
i’m losing it w the constant criticism & my mom knowing how to push me to my breaking points. the last fight we had was on mother’s day. i came home from work, & went upstairs to change & decompress for at least 30 min like i’ve always done w every job i’ve had. that was unacceptable bc it was mother’s day & i should’ve just come downstairs & outside. i explained to her my social battery gets drained, & that i only have so many spoons that can get used at a time & i need a minute to recharge so i can be my best & most “fun”, or whatever, self. she told me that next time i “should just fake it” next time bc it’s an occasion & i need to “stop being selfish & only putting myself first”.
i’m rlly rlly trying so hard to get better, & i see small improvements w myself, but my closest support system is disappointed in me & i’ve lost their support now. what else can i do?? if moving out was an option, i wouldn’t be posting so please don’t tell me to “just leave”. it’s not an option atm :/

2024.05.14 15:44 Mister4li3n i need help and i dont even know what i can do to get rid of this habbit.

Context: I’m in my thirties, with a toddler and a high-paying job as a software developer. However, I've been underperforming for ages. I still deliver value, but I know I could be doing much more—be a better father, work for a better company. I used to work for two USA companies, earning much more than I do now at a local startup in Brazil. Even so, I can still support my family, but it's hard. I can't save any money each month, and I usually spend close to $100 a month on gaming.
My psychiatrist mentioned this in my last appointment five days ago. My wife was there too, and she complains a lot about my gaming, so she became very aggressive about me stopping. I deleted League of Legends and stayed off the computer. I used to play 3-8 games a day, and I was hyped because I was improving so much—I was close to reaching Master, which is a huge achievement in the game. I've played for 11 years, and it’s always been my "crutch" for escaping life's problems. I’ve had mental health issues since I was a teenager, diagnosed with bipolar disorder and ADHD, and I’ve been on medication for 10 years. I always had problems with my parents, who would leave me alone, and gaming has been a thing for me since I was 10 years old. I played on consoles, online MMORPGs, and a bunch of other games; it's always been present in my life.
The problem is that my psychologist (in Brazil, a psychologist gives therapy while a psychiatrist prescribes medication) thinks I used gaming to survive my early years. He believes I should transition to moderation, as it’s my escape, and try to make it a healthy habit to reduce stress. I've been doing cognitive behavioral therapy for some time. He also said that my problem with work isn’t due to gaming but because my brain is hormonally disregulated, affecting my job performance. I work for a big local startup that operates in every state of Brazil, and I manage an entire payment system solo.
Since my child was born, it took me about a month to adapt to my new routine, but it was a very hard transition for me and my wife. We fought all the time. I tried to be a present father by playing early in the morning (6-10 am) before my wife and child woke up and sometimes at the end of the day. It didn’t affect my care for my kid since I only played when he was asleep. Sometimes, I gamed at night while my wife did her own thing, and we spent time together occasionally. However, she wants more time from me and more help with household chores. I take care of the pets and their needs and sometimes wash dishes, but we pay someone to clean the house daily. My wife doesn’t work; she takes care of our child and started another college course to eventually work from home like me in software development. She wants me to be there for them and not waste time on unproductive behavior.
My wife almost left me after what happened in the last five days. My psychiatrist said I should quit gaming entirely, sell my gaming computer, and never look back.
So, I deleted League.
The result was that I became very anxious. I tried not to play anything and sat on the couch for about three hours, staring at the wall, with no will to do anything. I had lots of work to do, but I was already exhausted from the responsibility and trying to be the father my kid deserves. In that moment, already worn out from fighting with my wife, feeling too much pressure to work, and struggling financially, I had a huge panic attack. My wife got angry and left the house that day.
I needed something to relieve my stress, so I downloaded Albion on my phone. For the past five days, I haven't worked. All I do is play this game. I feel like I have no will to live. I’ve been honest with my job about feeling overloaded. My psychologist believes my psychiatrist shouldn’t have told me to quit gaming cold turkey because I use it to relieve stress. Now, I don’t know who is right or wrong. I’m already tired of Albion and just deleted it. I feel like going back to League. I also impulsively spent money on Albion that I shouldn’t have. In League, I spent less because I already have all the skins. Now I don’t know what to do or who to believe. Should I stop gaming? If so, how can I do it? I feel crazy if I don’t play.
What are your opinions? Sorry for the long text.
TL;DR: I'm a software developer struggling with gaming addiction, affecting my job and family life. My psychiatrist advised me to quit gaming, but it led to anxiety and a panic attack. My psychologist suggests moderation instead. My wife is frustrated and almost left me. I don't know whether to quit or find a balance. Need advice.

2024.05.14 15:43 NecessaryFig1034 Happy with everything else except my tags: Controlled vocab recommendation?

Hi folks,
I'm enjoying Zettelkasten. I like and find useful taking small notes about topics I enjoy learning about and can later reference. I'm happy with the anatomy of my zettels, except for my tags. I'm struggling with topics and don't know how to tag things.
I'm using Obsidian, so I have the option of using nested tags, e.g., #field/topic. This seems logical to me: I can tag a note with it's topic as well as it's field of study using only one tag. Efficiency!
But this prompts me to then fall down the rabbit hole of researching controlled vocabularies, i.e., Library of Congress Subject Headings, Universal Decimal System, etc.
In doing so, a new question emerges. Should I use links as tags instead of tags as tags? The reason is that links allow for the use of aliases which makes it easy to capture synonyms, but I love the simplicity of tags.
In summary, I have to questions:
(1) Which controlled vocabulary framework are you all using for tagging your zettels with the topics they address (and what do you like and dislike about your use of that framework)?
(2) For those using Obsidian or similar, do you prefer (a) nested tags; (b) non-nested tags; or (c) links as tags? Why?
Thank you for your time and attention!

2024.05.14 15:41 RoxyAndFarley Canine Mammary Grade III Anaplastic Carcinoma

Species: Dog, mixed breed rescue
Age: 11 years old
Sex: Female, Spayed (she was spayed later in life than is recommended)
Weight: 40 lbs, very lean and has never been overweight
Relevant History: She has a history of both benign and malignant lumps including benign skin tags (4 years ago), benign mammary duct ectasia (4 years ago), malignant mammary tumor that was low grade/very small and caught early removed 2 years ago, had chest x-rays every 6 months since and all have been clear of indications of metastasis or reoccurance. The type of cancer this tumor was is considered a low to medium risk of metastasis or recurrence.
Current Presentation: About 5 weeks ago I noticed during a regular inspection for lumps and bumps that my dog was developing a skin infection near her rear most mammary region. She did have a run in with some fire ants so I assumed it had been an ant bite that got infected. When I brought her to the vet, the vet noted what felt like a tumor directly below the infection. It was hard to feel/palpate when the dog was in most positions, but she was able to feel it was there. The recommendation was to treat the skin infection and then, once clear of infection, proceed with lumpectomy and biopsy. She completed a 14 day course of cefpodoxime oral antibiotics but the infection did not improve. She was given a second course of the same but after 5 days it was getting worse rather than better. The vet prescribed oral clindamycin instead to see if that would clear it. She did a full course of that and when it was clear the infection was persisting we were advised to consider moving forward with the lumpectomy in case the tumoassociated hormone impact/immune impact may have been causing the infection resistance to improvement.
She had surgery on May 8th to remove the lump and some of the infection damaged tissue. Since then, her incision has stayed looking good (no swelling, no unusual colored discharge, appears to be closing up nicely) but as of yesterday, she developed an odor that I can only describe as smelling like infection. I might be wrong as I am not sure what a normal odor from a surgical site might be, but from an instinct level, it just seems off to me. She is still on clindamycin and the skin itself does not appear infected despite the odor. She does not have a fever or any other infection symptoms.
Her energy level is good and normal (she's still a highly active dog/more active than most young dogs we know), has a good appetite, and healthy bowel movements. She has no other health issues besides this. We have been keeping her confined other than potty breaks so she does not run and jump and ruin her stitches.
With all this context, yesterday we received the histopathology report from her lumpectomy. It does not sound good at all. The vet has offered a referral to an oncologist.
Clinical Report: I don't know how to attach the histopathology report directly, so I am copy/pasting the relevant sections below.
Description Haired skin, masss left caudal mammary chain: Elevating the epidermis and extending from the superficial dermis into the subcutis is a densely cellular, unencapsulated, poorly demarcated, infiltrative neoplasm composed of polygonal cells with distinct cell borders arranged in lobules, islands, nests, loose sheets, and rare tubules on a dense fibrovascular stroma. Neoplastic cells have a moderate amount of eosinophilic cytoplasm and a single round, centrally positioned nucleus with finely stippled chromatin and 1-3 prominent, round, basophilic nucleoli. Anisocytosis and anisokaryosis are moderate. Four mitotic figures are noted in ten high powered fields. Occasionally, neoplastic cells have karyomegaly, are multinucleated, or contain bizarre mitotic figures. Multifocally, throughout the superficial dermis and subcutis there are neoplastic emboli in the lumens of lymphatic vessels. Throughout the mass are small areas of hemorrhage and necrosis. The overlying epidermis is ulcerated and covered by a serocellular crust. Neoplastic cells abut and continue through the medial and caudal surgical margins.Question: My questions are, based on the information provided,
Histopathologic Diagnosis Haired skin, mass left caudal mammary chain: Mammary gland anaplastic carcinoma – grade III (high grade) - incompletely excised - with vascular invasion.
Comments
The left caudal mammary chain mass is consistent with a grade III (high grade) anaplastic mammary gland carcinoma. Neoplastic cells abut and continue through the medial and caudal surgical margins, and surgical removal of this mass is considered incomplete. Many dermal and subcutaneous lymphatic vessels also contained neoplastic emboli, and there is concern for local or distant metastasis of this neoplasm. Full clinical staging of this dog is recommended. Mammary tumors occur commonly in female dogs, particularly in those that are intact or were spayed at an older age, and ~50% are malignant. In intact animals, tumor growth can be hormonally influenced. Mammary gland carcinomas can metastasize, most often to the local lymph nodes followed by distant sites such as the lungs and other viscera. This carcinoma is classified as grade III (high grade) according to the most recently proposed grading system. Grade III mammary gland carcinomas have the highest rates of metastasis, recurrence, and cancer-related death. The histologic pattern of this carcinoma is consistent with an anaplastic carcinoma subtype. Anaplastic carcinomas are the most malignant subtype of mammary gland carcinomas and all are classified as grade III. They have very high rates of metastasis and a reduced median survival time (~3 months). This patient should be examined for evidence of regional and distant metastasis.
My Questions for this community:
1) Based on the grade and type of cancer, what are the chances that an oncologist can help prolong things for a reasonable amount of time? I don't want to put my dog through chemo or procedures/etc if it will only add weeks or months, on the other hand, if it could add years of high quality of life than of course that could be the right choice for her. I want her final chapter to be comfortable, joyful, and peaceful. I do not want to put her through unnecessary stress just for my own sake of having more time. Her best interest is my only basis for decision making.
2) Given the odor but otherwise lack of infection symptoms, how likely is it that the cancer has weakened her immune system so much that she won't recover from the infection?

2024.05.14 15:38 MarioMakerLegend I've been doing an 100 Days but the version upgrades everyday in Betacraft, any thoughts?

This is probably the most ambitious project I've done, but I'm on day 62 as of writing this, and it's been a blast! Here are my notes for every day in this: Day 1 (inf-20100607) Did nothing more than make myself a house and get food. Wood seemed scarce, so I mined coal during the night.
Day 2 (inf-20100608) Lit up the area, and made myself a cloth cap and shirt. The first sapling grew today, so I chopped it down and replanted.
Day 1 (again) (inf-20100611) Minecraft decided that my world didn't exist so I had to restart. Not too hard, though. I had to quickly build myself a wooden house (good thing there were so many trees!) and hide in there for the night. I didn't have coal, so no torches, and no torches means no light, and no light means PITCH BLACK nights. I was genuinely scared by this. Also, the skeletons and zombies made player noises. Weird.
Day 2 (again) (inf-20100615) Finished the wood shack and installed windows (not the OS, mind you). Then I added a tube to the back of the mineshaft to get to my house easier, and I also went mining. Found coal, but didn't have enough time to mine it due to it being update time.
Day 3 (inf-20100616-1) Decided to make a giant cobblestone nerd-pole so that I wouldn't get lost when exploring. Speaking of exploring, I did just that... for a little bit. That was very short-lived. I ended up mining for a while, and found the void-lava.
Day 4 (inf-20100617-1) Today was so far the most successful mining trip. I nerded out about the old trees having logs on the inside and the new trees not having that and those two kinds of trees being right next to each other. That's a run on sentence isn't it? Then I went into the mines and found more iron than I can count. Like I said, successful.
Day 5 (inf-20100617-2) Mining trip was good. Got more iron and found some void gold (a gold vein that exposed the void). It was cool.
Day 6 (inf-20100618, Seecret Friday 1) I screwed around with minecarts.
Day 7 (inf-20100624) Decided to light up the area around spawn, but not in spawn. Decided to fight baddies for the heck of it that night. Also made the house look more appealing.
Day 8 (inf-20100625-1) Everything that I placed and did in the last day got reversed to how they were on Day 6, except for my inventory. I spent the day fixing everything. In the night, I went mining and found more iron. No diamonds D:
Day 9 (inf-20100625-2, Seecret Friday 2) Today they added dungeons and some other stuff but it's not very important to me right now. Went mining for the day.
Day 10 (inf-20100627) Nothing interesting was added today so I went exploring to find water. I also made a glass room in my mine to tell the time.
Day 11 (inf-20100630-1) Infdev 20100629 didn't wanna work. So here we are, at 20100630-1. Stairs were added in the last version, so I added stairs to my mine. The stairs sure are finnicky, though! I also filled a creeper blast with water (that is surprisingly calming...)
Day 12 (inf-20100630-2) The last Infdev day. Tomorrow it will be Alpha! To prepare for the long journey of Alpha releases I built a new addition to the house. Finally, I made a sign and a shrine for Infdev. Farewell!
Day 13 (a1.0.1_01) Last version was Seecret Friday, but the file is lost and I have to play this version. But there are so many changes!! Excited! Didn't find redstone in the mines, though. I also finished the new room and organized the chests.
Day 14 (a1.0.2_01) Went exploring for some coal and cooked all my pork chops.
Day 15 (a1.0.2_02) Can't remember much other than that I went mining. That's it I guess?
Day 16 (a1.0.3) Went exploring for some coal but found a cool cave and also found lots of coal and iron
Day 17 (a1.0.4, Seecret Friday 4) Same as Day 16.
Day 18 (a1.0.5) Went back home and decided to go strip-mining because caving didn't go very well. Not much happened.
Day 19 (a1.0.5_01) There is a new project now; I am carving my face on a mountain. Gonna need a lot of stone though. And gravel. Lots and lots of gravel.
Day 20 (a1.0.6, Seecret Friday 5) Cactuses were added. Neat I guess. Also Boats. But that doesn't apply to what I did today because what I did today was work on my face. I went to get gravel. There was a lot of gravel.
Day 21 (a1.0.6_01) Marked the gravel spot, got distracted, and now I'm lost. at least I found a cactus!
Day 22 (a1.0.6_03) Using the power of looking back at the footage, I was able to return home! With the cactus! Yippee!
Day 23 (a1.0.7) Continued work on the face: I did it! Now I am making the body. Might need more gravel...
Day 24 (a1.0.8_01) i died.
Day 25 (a1.0.9) I continued working on my statue of me and got some more gravel. Had 1 block left after finishing!
Day 26 (a1.0.10) Went strip mining, found no diamonds.
Day 27 (a1.0.11, Seecret Friday 6) This update, lots of cool stuff was added but nothing that I can use. Went strip mining and found zero diamonds.
Day 28 (a1.0.12) The splash was "missingno" for some reason. Anyways, continued working on a giant tower. Ladders suck
Day 29 (a1.0.13) Finished the tower. Ladders STILL suck...
Day 30 (a1.0.13_01) Got bored of building so I went in one direction to find some sugarcane. Found some and am going back
Day 31 (a1.0.13_01 1Kin24h edition) The title screen was changed to say 1K in 24h because Minecraft sold 1,000 units in 24 hours! That might not seem like a lot but at the time that was big news. ANYWAYS, got back home and planted sugarcane, and also made a bookshelf. Also, bricks!
Day 32 (a1.0.14-1, Seecret Friday 7) Chickens and chest minecarts and furnace minecarts are added and I WANT A RAIL SYSTEM so I decided that my face could be a cart station. also iron doors suck
Day 33 (a1.0.14-2) What did I do... Oh yeah i put a tower compass thing.
Day 34 (a1.0.15) Played Minecraft, Watched Hermitcraft, Got Gravel.
Day 35 (a1.0.16) Mined some dirt
Day 36 (a1.0.16_01) placed the dirt replacing the sand, also paths.
Day 37 (a1.0.16_02) paths. PATHS!!!!!!1!
Day 38 (a1.0.17_02) Fences were added in alpha 1.0.17 but that version and a1.0.7_01 are lost so this is the one I have to play. Anyways, I got some wood for a farm project. How is that related? You'll see...
Day 39 (a1.0.17_03) See, fences placed underneath farmland makes the farmland UNTRAMPLEABLE. That's nice.
Day 40 (a1.0.17_04) Last a1.0.1x version! Grinding for wood sux.
Day 41 (a1.1.0-1, Seecret Friday 9) Compasses! I WANT A COMPASS. So I don't get lost ;) but i don't have redstone so i went mining for some. NO LUCK as always...
Day 42 (a1.1.0-2) Mining. No. Redstone. Or. Diamonds.
Day 43 (a1.1.1, Seecret Saturday) SNEAKIN' ROUND THE BLOCK, WOOHOO! Spent this legendary version just mining and found BEDROCK. I'll tell you that that wasn't there before. Still no redstone OR diamonds. FOUND A CAVE, THOUGH.
Day 44 (a1.1.2) idk what I did, I cooked pork I guess
Day 45 (a1.1.2_01) I mined out a bit of my face and gave a tour of the world to Pap. Last version with neon foliage.
Day 46 (a1.2.0, Halloween Update) Because this version added the Nether, I desperately tried to get diamonds so I could make a nether portal. Alas, no luck on that front.
Day 47 (a1.2.0_01) Continued mining until my pickaxes broke. After that, I hollowed out some more of my face. That's it?
Day 48 (a1.2.0_02) I tried making a rail way to the resource gathering area, but turns out that furnace minecarts are extremely finnicky. That project will have to wait until Beta 1.5...
Day 49 (a1.2.1_01) Turns out that Alpha 1.2.1 is the only lost Alpha 1.2 version. Go figure. Anyways, I started working on Mama's Mother's Day gift thing, and got ambushed by like a million mobs during the night. This is what I signed up for when switching to Hard mode, what did I expect?
Day 50 (a1.2.2-1) The ability to easily switch between texture packs was added in this version, replacing the ever-defunct "Play tutorial level" button. Also, nether portals with F4. I'm definitely going to use that once I figure out how it works. Update: figured out how the portals work, they seem to be random. I tried it in a test world then in my actual world and it worked! It was really cool in the Nether, but I just so happen to be underground. Ugh.
Day 51 (a1.2.2-2) Spent the day continuing working on the Mother's Day gift. I didn't die this time!
Day 52 (a1.2.3) Coordinates were added to the F3 menu, which is pretty nice. Now I CAN'T get lost! Anyways, I finished the Mother's Day gift and then died due to skelley boi. Man I need to mine... That will be a project for tomorrow.
Day 53 (a1.2.3_01-1) I didn't mine. Instead, I focused on ranged attacks and getting food and leather for armor.
Day 54 (a1.2.3_01-2) I continued to get resources from animals and ended up with a lot of pork chops and a leather shirt.
Day 55 (a1.2.3_02) Started a new mine so that I can get iron and diamonds faster. I found iron actually now!
Day 56 (a1.2.3_04) Turns out a1.2.3_03 doesn't exist. Weird, huh? Anyway, I finished digging down to y11 and am installing stairs.
Day 57 (a1.2.4, a1.2.3_05 in-game) Continued mining out my brand-new definitely not abandoned mineshaft. Got some of the unused rails and put them to good use!
Day 58 (a1.2.4_01) Went a little overtime huh? Well today was kinda uneventful, i mined, mined some more, and mined EVEN MORE. STILL no diamonds. I'm kinda losing hope...
Day 59 (a1.2.5) Only 1 alpha version left! Wow, time really did fly fast, huh? Anyway, I went and made a new room below the furnace room for storage, so that when I am in the beta versions I won't run out of storage. I also need wood.
Day 60 (a1.2.6) It's the LAST version of Alpha, and you know what I'm gonna do? Make an alpha shrine of course! I did the same for Infdev on day 12 if you remember. So yeah, that's what I'll do today. Update: I got killed by a zombie at the last second it COULD have. That sux
Day 61 (b1.0) Immediately, the Alpha shrine got blown up by a creeper instantly. And I died twice. It gets better, though. I continued working on the storage area and got things sorted out. However, there appears to be an inventory bug and that made my life waay harder. Still though, pretty productive day!
Day 62 (b1.0_01) The stupid chest bug was fixed! Yaay!

2024.05.14 15:38 4_Teh-Lulz Common electrical myths, misunderstandings, and bad idioms.

I'd love to see another pinned post on this sub breaking down electrical myths and common idioms that are incorrect. They all show a lack of understanding of how the things we work on every day actually work, and could potentially lead to dangerous situations if taken at face value.
I've been a member of this sub for 8 years or so and all the time I see allegedly qualified electricians spouting absolute nonsense, common electrical myths, and demonstrating an obvious deficit in understanding of basic electrical theory.
Stuff like:
Current takes the path of least resistance
No, current takes all available paths inversely proportional to their resistance.
Current goes to ground
No, current goes back to its source, it will use the ground as an additional path when available because we bond the source to ground at the source.
Its the current that kills you, not the voltage
Kind of, except the current will always be a function of your bodies resistance, the source voltage, and the nature of the fault. The voltage of the system is the primary factor in determining how dangerous a system is to touch. Basic math shows that its safer to touch a circuit that operates at 12 volts carrying 1000 amps than it is to touch a circuit operating at 600v carrying 1 amp.
When you touch a neutral your body takes the full current of the load
This one really gets me. So many electricians seem to go blind and forget that ohms law still applies regardless of the color of the wire. I've been in mutiple discussions with folks that INSIST that if a circuit is carrying 15amps and you touch that neutral or bridge the neutral in series with your hands then the load will push that same 15amps through your body regardless of the fact that your body is now a part of that circuit and brings its own resistance into the equation.
touching phase to phase is more dangerous than phase to neutral because each phase pushes current in opposite directions and they cross at your heart.
Yeah, I've genuinely had this discussion with someone IRL. It makes zero sense because if each phase pushed current in opposite directions then obviously you could never have a current flowing through a load since they'll push against each other.
What other myths and common misunderstandings do you all see?
Please feel free to start discussions. I'm happy to elaborate and discuss these topics with anyone who wants to learn.

2024.05.14 15:37 ShadowChateau How can I improve my neon magic system?

The Neon Age was when people discovered strange electromagnetic brain waves that stem from the mind that can only be detected by the use of neon. Most people, when surrounded by neon, give off a dim glow that can only be seen by special cameras. But if you train your mind, you'll start making a visible light appear in nearby neon gas.
With enough training one can reshape these lights into strange beings called sparklers that can physically touch and manipulate anything within reach of the neon gas, but they can also jump from cloud of neon to cloud of neon instantaneously, regardless of the distance between them. These sparklers seem to be tireless, strong, and, in some cases, independent.
Later on, it was learned that, through exposure to neon, one is able to slowly learn to grow their output and even shape these brain waves and manipulate the neon around them.
This has led to the creation of neon wires and their use as whiplike weapons that neon mages can manipulate mentally. These whips can output thousands of pounds of kinetic force in explosive pulses if weilded by experienced neon mages.
Neon mages, as mentioned before, can also create sparklers that can manifest anywhere there is neon gas. Though some more experienced neon mages can force these sparklers outside of neon gas, though their ability to influence the physical world is greatly reduced.
Neon mages also man titans, large mecha that use neon wires control their movements. The neon mages interact with a spirit "Ai", basically weird fleshy computers made from lab grown brain tissue.
Neon mages also use a form of meditation in a chamber of neon gas to connect to other neon mages lightyears away. They can communicate important information across the galaxy in real time, like living phones. Of course, neon is still not oxygen, so they need to leave these chambers eventually or have special injections of oxygen into their circulatory system.
The only thoughts I have on the dangers of being a neon mage are that the stronger the mage gets, the more neon will "pull" on their electromagnetic waves, essentially causing skips in mental processes while in the presence of neon. And the more powerful you are, the more potent these skips will be. Minor skips can lead to short-term memory loss and disorientation. While major skips can lead to organ failure or seizures.
Any thoughts on how I can do to improve this system? Anything I can clarify to make this make more sense?

2024.05.14 15:35 multi-chain The Art of Separation: Density Gradient Centrifugation

In the pursuit of developing efficient purification techniques for nanoparticles, scientists require a model system that can mimic the complexities of real-world samples. Polymersomes, vesicles formed from polymers, have emerged as an ideal model for nanoparticle purification due to their unique characteristics.
First and foremost, polymersomes exhibit a wide range of sizes and shapes, depending on the preparation method. This diversity is reminiscent of the heterogeneity often observed in nanoparticle samples, making polymersomes a suitable model to test the efficiency of purification techniques on particles with varying characteristics. By using polymersomes, scientists can develop and refine purification methods that can handle the complexity of real-world samples.
Another advantage of polymersomes is their mechanical robustness. Due to the high molecular weight of the polymers involved, polymersomes are quite sturdy, allowing for the testing of purification techniques that might be too harsh for more delicate nanoparticles. This robustness provides a unique opportunity to push the boundaries of purification methods, exploring new techniques that might not be possible with more fragile particles.
The formation of polymersomes involves complex processes that can lead to a variety of structures, providing a wide range of particle sizes and shapes. This complexity is ideal for developing and testing new separation methods, as it allows scientists to explore the efficacy of different techniques on a diverse range of particles.
Furthermore, the properties of polymersomes, such as their stability, are highly dependent on their size and shape. This makes them a good model to study how these properties influence the purification process. By understanding how polymersome properties affect purification, scientists can develop more targeted and effective methods for nanoparticle purification.
polymersomes are the perfect model for nanoparticle purification due to their size and shape diversity, mechanical robustness, complex formation mechanisms, and structural properties. By using polymersomes as a model system, scientists can develop and refine purification techniques that can handle the complexities of real-world samples, ultimately leading to more efficient and effective nanoparticle purification methods.

2024.05.14 15:34 multi-chain Separating the Wheat from the Chaff: Purification by Centrifugation and GPC

In the pursuit of purity, scientists often employ a range of techniques to separate the desired particles from the unwanted ones. In the case of polymersomes, purification is a crucial step in ensuring the quality and consistency of these complex nanostructures. In this essay, we’ll delve into the world of centrifugation and gel permeation chromatography (GPC), exploring how these techniques are used to purify polymersomes by size and molecular weight.
The journey begins with centrifugation, a process that separates particles based on their size and density. The initial step involves removing micelles from the solution using the KrosFlow filtration system, as we discussed earlier. The resulting solution is then centrifuged at 500 Rotational Centrifugal Force (RCF) for 20 minutes, causing the largest aggregate fraction to precipitate out of solution. This pellet is removed and resuspended in PBS, creating a fraction that contains the largest polymersomes.
But the process doesn’t stop there. The supernatant is then re-centrifuged at 2000 RCF for 20 minutes, and the resulting pellet is removed and resuspended, constituting fraction 1. This process is repeated multiple times, with further 20-minute centrifugations at 5000, 10000, 15000, and 20000 RCF. Each time, the pellet is removed and resuspended, creating a series of fractions that contain polymersomes of decreasing size.
The next step is purification by GPC, a technique that separates particles based on their molecular weight. The polymersome solution, now free of micelles and aggregates, is concentrated to approximately 200 μL using a 500 kDa MicroKros filter module. The solution is then placed in a glass liquid chromatography column containing Sepharose 4B, a porous matrix that allows smaller molecules to pass through while retaining larger ones.
As the solution flows through the column, the polymersomes are separated based on their molecular weight, with the largest molecules eluting first. The fractions are collected in a 96-well plate, and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measurements are performed on a Zetasizer Nano ZS to determine the size and polydispersity of each fraction.
The result is a series of highly purified polymersome fractions, each with a narrow size distribution and minimal impurities. This level of purity is essential for downstream applications, where the consistency and quality of the polymersomes can make all the difference.
In the end, the art of purification is a testament to human ingenuity and the power of science. By combining centrifugation and GPC, scientists can create highly purified polymersomes that are tailored to specific applications. Whether it’s in medicine, biotechnology, or materials science, the pursuit of purity is a crucial step in unlocking the full potential of these complex nanostructures.

2024.05.14 15:30 CuriousPup2050 Our plan to close the gap

Howdy howdy all. I want to share my journey with my partner, who for anonimity I'll call Rosa. and how we're navigating the long-distance relationship and immigration process. We met online in February 2022, and by November, I decided to take a leap of faith and fly to Chicago to meet her and her family, along with my trusty canine companion. During that trip, something incredible happened - I proposed to Rosa! I just knew in my heart that she was the one I wanted to spend my life with. In 2023, we decided to take our relationship to the next level and I spent three months in Chicago, celebrating my birthday with her family and making unforgettable memories. But when I returned home, things took an unexpected turn. I found myself homeless, which only made our desire to be together even stronger. That's when we started exploring our options for immigration and closing the gap between us. However, the process was far from easy. We encountered numerous obstacles, including fraudulent immigration lawyers and brokers who made empty promises. Just as we were about to give up hope, we stumbled upon Boundless Immigration. 2024.05.14 15:30 Coderan Meme Stocks Won't Hurt The Big Guys but Can Help You

I don't think I need to tell anyone about the meme stock surge arising again but I want to remind some people: get yo money. That is how you hurt the big guys. Riding a community meme alone until you're broke will not. Here's some call out and tips:
  1. AMC, Gamestop, etc. were on their last legs. That does not mean they were useless companies. Gamestop struggled mightly in the pandemic with shipping well before the meme boost with some speculation that it bought them time to record revenues but not costs Then the actual gaming boom underlying picked up and with scarcity of hardware, Gamestop actually had commodities you couldn't get on amazon, the physical chip shortage that is needed for consoles.
  2. If he figured it out, they all figured it out: This one is a little more obvious with this type of investing but looking at the movie that came out recently. That guy rode a wave with so many supporters and they made a whole movie of him taking down the entire us eco... uh well no he made one rich dude lose a lot of money, made a ton for himself, and some were able to benefit because the market was slow. It was an inefficiency but we all different timing. When the rest of the crowd finally jumps in, you're scraping for crumbs and just part of the next meme wave hoping those controlling it decide to pump at the time you're in.
  3. To the point above... The big guys might be afraid of meme stocks now but they have balls. What they aren't afraid of is every other stock on the market not connected to a meme. This is where you need to make sure you aren't just following some dude who has no clue what you need or trying to start your own holy war if you dont have the capital (money or people). It took an army with a strong leader to take down investors on a very small sample of stocks. It's fun when the stock goes up. It's not fun when the next day on twitch, reddit, whatever they tell you they just dumped because it was too good to pass.
Remember this is a rigged system so it's not like this is an exact science. The problem with the memes is just because we all need to band together to make a move while one guy can just decide to take down some other random company. But all of this is pointless if you dont get yo money!

2024.05.14 15:26 JaredvsSelf I got the promotion, despite being the most junior member in the department. Here's how I did it.

(tl;dr included)
In less than a year, I've become the new senior support agent. Over agents who had been set up to get the position, who had been sort of told they were going to get the position.
That's right. I'm finally off of the phones, and I did it even though I have the least amount of experience at the company than the rest of the department. In the spirit of helping others succeed, I'd like to share how I did it.
(Full disclosure: prior to working for this company, I had over three years of IT experience with one other employer, where I was also promoted to Tier 2. I also have a B.S. in CS. All other forms of employment in my life revolved around customer service, which I used to my advantage in the interview process to land this job. If I started over, here are the tips I'd want to learn first over everything else...)
tl;dr Do the work, assist your supervisor, find your niche, lean on customer service, learn how to troubleshoot, volunteer for the difficult stuff, learn how to research, document everything, keep a positive attitude, get lucky.

* Do. The. Work. I'm not saying you have to kowtow to the machine (that's actually fairly harmful to your chances, I would argue); but the reality was clear that I was the only one doing work consistently. Our team is entirely WFH, and after having commuted an hour and ten minutes for my previous employer, I wasn't going to squander this opportunity. Your employer is going to give you goals to meet. If they're realistic, and the employer doesn't then exploit your efforts, do them. That's it. To be honest, despite doing this work, I would often cut corners and treat myself to some down time. WFH, baby. But when the chips were down, I did what I needed to do. Most others didn't.

* If your supervisor asks you a favor, do it (within reason). I understand there are a lot of employers and supers out there looking to take advantage of their workers. You have to make that call yourself. But I felt confident that mine were not taking me for a ride, and when they asked me to tackle something, I did it. I told them, no problem, I've got you. I'm here to help you. Because I'm happy to have this job, and I want to succeed here. My super would often apologize for asking me to do so much. Apparently this is because the other agents would tell them no, they have too much to do already. Don't get me wrong, there were times when I had to turn something down, but more often than not I jumped in to help when I could.

* I found my niche. I have really bad ADHD, and I have to write everything down. That includes solutions to problems. So I became really good at making my own knowledge bases. Guess which department didn't have a knowledge base? Yep. I made the KB for our team, and I continue to maintain it. I shared it with other supervisors, I shared it with other relevant departments. It got me noticed. Figure out what you're good at, find opportunities to put it to use.

* Customer service. Nobody likes customer service, least of all me. But you know what? That's also an opportunity. Leaning on customer service is how I landed this position in the first place. Be nice to your customers, and on average you'll become The Guy. They'll mention how helpful and kind you are to the right people. They'll call in to the queue and make cases specifically asking for you. Again, this will ideally get you noticed by the right people. I've been on customer calls with my peers. I would often be horrified hearing the things they've said to customers. I'm talking inappropriate comments, passive-aggressiveness, shutting down questions and requests, take your pick. That sort of stuff does get reported, and you will be known as 'that person'.

* Troubleshooting. It becomes more and more clear now that I'm a senior agent, and I see the Tier 2 cases, that some people are just better at troubleshooting than others. Some cases from Tier 1 will have a paragraph (yuck, use bullet points instead), while others will have a single sentence. That's right, people will constantly escalate cases with a single sentence that boils down to, "I don't know, I can't figure it out," and they won't even bother to write up WHAT they did. Even if you're not the best at thinking of all the possibilities, document your process fully. It makes a huge difference. My escalation notes would clearly state the current case issue at the time, all the relevant people, files, screenshots, steps, all laid out in an easy to read format. You can begin this process as soon as you get the ticket. My strategy is, treat the case like you're going to escalate from the beginning, and document the notes as such that someone else will take over when you've exhausted your knowledge. Most of the time you end up finding the solution yourself if you keep track of it all as you go along.

* Do the hard stuff (within reason). For two months I was asked to cover another department that was on fire. It was Hell. Absolute Hell. I kept statistics of my calls and cases, and it was literally 5x my normal workload, and the customers for this particular department were positively miserable to work with. But I did it anyway. I learned a ton about several platforms my peers will never touch. Again, this got me noticed by the right people. I don't want to advocate destroying your health for your job, however. Despite the stress, I knew that if things got truly bad, I would intervene on my own behalf. Remember to take care of yourselves.

* Research. Nobody else seems to like researching anything. We have several knowledge bases available to us (including the one I made), and it seems like nobody else uses them. Very often I'll find the answer to a problem by knowing what keywords to search, and then I take that article and incorporate it back into my own KB for the future. Now a case that took an hour will only take 5 minutes... if you take the 5 minutes to actually try to FIND the answer. Most of the time, my peers will run the typical troubleshooting steps, shrug, and send the case along. A little bit more effort on your part will get you noticed. Do it. Even if you don't find the answer, write on the case notes that you tried searching in XYZ places and was unable to find anything.

* Stay positive. It's tough. It's really tough. But staying calm and positive really does make a huge difference for yourself and for the morale of your customers and peers. Being the one with the level head in a catastrophe will let you stand apart from those who give up or become mega salty. You don't have the answer to a question? Tell them, don't worry, I'll research this and get back to you. We'll figure this out. I'm here to help you. I've worked with clients who are absolutely ruthless, and they turn into teddy bears when I say this stuff to them. They're so used to being shut down that they become aggressive, but if you let them know you actually care and will help, you'll see a huge difference. Did the system just go down and your team is freaking out? Bring in some much needed levity. Don't worry guys, someone just plugged in the toaster oven. Let's find a workaround until it's back up. Things happen, no need to suffer twice.

  • I got lucky. I'm not going to claim every single thing I did led me to this promotion. A lot of it just had to do with dumb luck. It was lucky that I found the job posting, lucky that I got the job, lucky that the department evolved in such a way that I was finally placed in this position that I'm in. Lucky that my coworkers seemingly didn't care, or rested on their laurels. So don't beat yourself up if things don't turn out the way you wanted.
If you do all of this, or are already doing this, one could make an argument that it's better to find other opportunities that will take notice of your efforts and reward you in kind.
I hope this helped someone today.
Hang in there, keep going, keep learning, and keep taking care of yourself. You've got this.
Edit: adjusted formatting.

While troublesome in its own right, what really got under her skin was that she only had one charge at the moment, and that edge lord piece of shit wasn’t supposed to complete his task for AT LEAST another 4 deca-cycles according to the prediction algorithm. Grumbling to herself, she rolled out of bed and poured herself a glass of water to offset the hangover she was trying to recover from.

A few moments later she was gliding down the hall to the meeting room. She knew Jason was going to pitch a fit that she had left him waiting, the self-entitled brat always did think the world revolved around him; but perhaps he should have thought about that before freaking dying so early. If he wanted her to be there to meet him upon death, he could at least have the decency to not die the morning after one of her binges.

Other staff members gave her a wide berth, even if it was a hollow title, she was still technically far above basically anyone else in the pecking order, at least those who had a physical presence within the Agency. She knew they all mocked her behind her back, even divine beings were sadly prone towards gossip. She put the anger at her subordinates/coworkers out of her mind for now; even if she didn’t particularly LIKE Jason, he still didn’t deserve her coming in with baggage.

Lost in her thoughts, she hadn’t noticed that she’d arrived in front of the conference room door. She had been mulling over her thoughts, just staring into nothingness, for several minutes before she finally snapped back to the present. With a soft rap on the door, she opened it and floated inside. Jason was lounging, sprawled out on the regally padded chair throne he so fancied.

They exchanged pleasantries before she sat down to go over the mission summary. Upon seeing the cause of death, she had regrettably lost her composure and started to laugh uncontrollably. Her mighty subordinate had been felled by a goblin?! The mighty Jason Alexander Coyle, “mercenary extraordinaire”, had gotten his shit kicked in by a lowly goblin using what looked like a shiny butter knife. Oh, it was just too rich to not laugh at the absurdity.

It took her much longer than she would like to admit, to stop laughing. Jason of course wore a sour look through the entire endeavor. She shrugged it off, she had little doubt that if the same thing had happened to someone else, he would have been right beside her doubled over in laughter. Hell, once he was in a less pissy mood, she might even be able to get him to laugh about it later.

As luck would have it, it appeared that Jason’s actions had been enough to alter the tides of the war. The kingdom, and its divinity, would still lose many to the battles ahead, but Jason had done enough that the Agency could still bill the client for services rendered. As she spoke, she could see the disdain the man had for her, he always complained that she was drunk and reeked of liquor. Sure, that was often true, but he didn’t need to be such a stick in the mud about it all.

She went ahead and authorized the transfer of credits to Jason’s account. As soon as she did so, he opened up the store page and tuned her out. She watched him open up the back-channel site and purchase something, a small part of her wondered who was going to get roasted over the coals this time for allowing their admin privileges to be hacked. She toyed with the idea of bringing up his illegal actions, but truth be told she didn’t really give a shit. The other divinities were far too lax with their security, it had been child's play for one of her previous wards to hack into the Agency’s system and build the black site.

She’d ask him once about the whole thing, didn’t really grasp as much as she would have liked, but basically it functioned by spoofing a handler's credentials. This allowed the user to gain access to encrypted parts of the network, specifically access to certain privileged services that handlers enjoyed and most importantly, access to the mission assignment database. Users could buy and sell restricted or banned goods, and a part of the profits would be siphoned off to her ward’s personal account.

With Jason’s attention otherwise occupied, Ruby went ahead and reviewed the logs for his previous mission. Something about it was nagging at her. She couldn’t put it into words; however, the whole series of events just didn’t feel like ‘bad luck’. Using her divine authority, she rewound events, watching Jason’s lungs unfill with blood and refill with air.

The goblin skulked back to its den of corpses, resheathing the dagger at its hips, and reburied itself underneath the bodies. She let it rewind another few moments before stopping the feed and letting it run at normal time. She watched the goblin, slowly shifting the bodies out of the way, making sure they made no noise when it moved them. Slowly, carefully, it began to creep towards Jason’s exposed back. It drew the blade, again slowly and quietly. It closed the distance making sure to never let Jason see it or to give him any reason to think someone was behind him. Then in a flash of movement it leapt, burying the dagger right into a joint in Jason’s armor. The placement was perfect, no resistance, so the blade sank to the hilt. Allowing it to puncture Jason’s right lung.

Ruby rewound the log once more. This was wrong, very wrong. The goblin was way too good to just be some random grunt. Its movements were too smooth, its aim too precise. No, she was sure of it now, this was not a normal goblin. She focused her attention on the thing, aiming to scan the goblin for abnormalities, the dust covering it offering a surprising level of resistance to her scan. Not enough to stop her from doing what she wanted, but more resistance than she felt was reasonable for the anti-magic powder.

When she finally gained access to the monster’s stat block, her suspicions were proven correct. That was no normal goblin, that was a Redcap, a Redcap assassin no less. What in the dozen hells was a Redcap assassin doing in the middle of a freaking battlefield?! Such a valuable unit wouldn’t be used on the front lines, their skill set was terribly suited for the chaos that was an active battle. No, something was very wrong here and Ruby was going to figure out what.

As her mind raced trying to puzzle out what the actual fuck was going on, something else about the goblin flagged in her mind. It had come out of the corpse pile with the dagger already in its possession. She highlighted the various bodies that had made up the goblin's hidey hole, and then rewound the scene back. Every time one of the highlighted bodies met their fate, she froze the moment and pulled the scene into a separate window. It took a few minutes, but she eventually had all of the corpses frozen in the heartbeat before their deaths. She went through and scanned every single individual. Not a single one had been equipped with a magic disruptor blade. “So, where the fuck did the Redcap get a kingdom issued disruptor?”

Looking up, she saw that Jason was still fiddling with whatever it was that he bought. She tried to make idle conversation with the man, but he had gone full auto pilot, giving curt one-to-two word answers when asked a question or having to respond to a comment. She rolled her eyes, as much as she and him butted heads, she did have to admit that she did kind of like the guy. He had been going a little too hard into the whole dark and brooding edge lord thing recently, but that was hardly his fault. The human soul was ill suited to withstand the trauma of death, much less multiple deaths. The Agency usually did a memory scrub every couple missions, to prevent that kind of issue, but Jason had been dodging the screenings. For a moment she considered just letting sleeping dogs lie. Jason was dead and the mission was over regardless of what she might find, but the whole thing just rubbed her the wrong way.

Taking a little nip from her pocket flask, she once more focuses her attention on the Redcap. After scrubbing through the last several months of the creature’s life, she finally finds what she was looking for. The blade had come from one of Jason’s personal guards.

Ruby did a deep dive on the guard, and what came back made her blood run cold. The man had recently lost his lover. Jason had ordered a company to mop up a fleeing enemy force, before it could regroup and cause more issues. The entire thing had been a ruse and the company had been slaughtered to the last. The guard's lover had been part of that company. The loss had hit the man hard, driving him to the only rock left in his life. His deep belief in the kingdom’s divinity.

And wouldn’t you know it, apparently the kingdom’s divinity had some issues with Jason that it couldn’t be bothered to address through the proper channels. So instead of letting Ruby handle the trainwreck that was Jason’s social skills, this little scum lord of a God, had taken upon themself to deal with the issue. Several months of holy visions were enough to convince the grieving widow to betray everyone and everything he had ever known.

Once the guard had been properly brainwashed into turning his coat, it had been a simple matter to worm his way on to all of Jason’s post-fight surveys of the battlefield. The magic scanners that were exclusive to Jason’s retinue, had allowed him to see that Jason’s inhuman ability to avoid taking damage was really just a creative use of high-level magic. High-level magic that could have easily been used to save many of the kingdom’s soldiers. But of course, Jason believed himself too good to give the common man a means to protect themselves and those they loved. All this knowledge was of course worthless to the guard, he was nowhere near skilled enough to actually challenge Jason. But wouldn’t you know it, the divinity had thought of that too.

The podunk worm had brokered a secret deal with the enemy he’d contracted the Agency to deal with. In exchange for getting rid of a thorn in the God’s side, it would use its powers to scale back the war. Instead of facing a war of eradication, the enemy would be allowed to keep some of the land it had conquered.

At the urging of his God, the guard held a series of clandestine meetings with the Redcap. Imparting all the information he had learned in the months of shadowing Jason. He also gave the beast two gifts, the first was a Disruptor blade the guard had swiped from a fellow honor guard; when Jason’s corpse was found the blade would be traced back to the unfortunate guard instead of the traitor. The second was a satchel of Grarothian powder that had been blessed by the divinity, to ensure that Jason wouldn’t see the attack coming. It had worked of course; Jason hadn’t even known he was in danger till the blade was already buried in his lung. Oh, she was going to have the wannabe God’s head on a pike after this.

It pained her to admit it, but Jason deserved the final say in how this was all going to go down. She attempted to grab his attention, but the man was lost in his own little world. She tried waving her hands, ignored. She tried snapping her fingers in his ears, ignored. She even went so far as to beat her wings, blasting his face with the wind force of just under a category 1 hurricane; again ignored. Her rage was starting to reach fever pitch. So, she defaulted to the most tried and true method of stress reduction she had in her arsenal. She decided the only way for herself and Jason, once he knew the truth, to calm down would be to relax with a drink of the finest Earth treats.

With a heavy heart she opened up her most beloved extra planer storage space. This place was used for the only two things Ruby really cared about anymore. It was where she kept her most prized and coveted liquor, and where she kept the last few mementos, she possessed of her fallen wards. Her eyes scanned the room, she needed to pick the right apology gift. As she carefully made her way towards the back, she saw it. Tucked in about two thirds of the way to the back wall, stood a single hogshead of ancient scotch whiskey. The second to last gift she had received from one of her dearest friends, all those years ago.

Yes, this was the correct one. She felt it deep within her chest, a proper atonement requires a proper level of sacrifice. With a heavy heart she lifted the barrel over her head and began to stride out of the extra dimensional space. As she neared the opening, the soft clink of something falling and a flash of gold caught her eye. Sitting on a tiny end table was a small pouch of coins, one of which had somehow gotten loose and tumbled face up onto the polished table face.

For a moment she hesitated, she knew exactly what those coins were; and knew how much trouble she would get into if upper management found out she had them. That said, she also knew a sign when she saw one. The artifacts that she held within this place were the last remnants of those she had failed most of all. She pondered the meaning behind the fact that two of her previous charges seemed to have taken a shine to Jason, offering up to him their most precious of gifts. With a heavy heart and a plea to those long lost, she grabbed the coin before closing the pocket dimension.

With a loud *CLUNK* She set the hogshead down. Apparently, the sound of the barrel had finally made enough noise to draw Jason’s attention away from his screen. From a much smaller storage pocket she produced two crystal glasses. Pouring a hefty serving into each glass, she set one down in front of herself and the other in front of Jason. Locking eyes with the man, she said a single word.

“Drink”

The man twisted his face up in disgust at the sight of the liquor.

“Thanks, but no thanks, I’m not inclined to degr...”

“I said, DRINK!” Ruby growl bellows, casting the Command spell on the last word. Jason, despite his best efforts to ignore the compulsion, is forced to do as he is told, and takes a hearty swig of his hundred-year-old Scotch. With a smile on her lips, Ruby takes the opportunity to sip the illustrious gift. The hours melt away as they both sip and savor the deep complex flavors of this legendary brew.

As the drink flows her recollection of events becomes just a tad bit hazy. She can’t really remember how long it takes, but she does eventually come clean about the reason for this impromptu bout of drinking. It comes as little shock that Jason is... less than pleased to learn about the events that led to his death. He downs the rest of his drink in a single gulp, a waste of grand booze in Ruby’s opinion, and demands she fill his next one to the brim. For the first time in FAR too long, Ruby gets to see the Jason she had known all those years ago was still in there.

As the festivities carried on, she would occasionally catch him fiddling with the token he had bought. Curiosity finally getting the better of her, she decided to ask him about it, deciding to NOT mention that she knew it was illicitly purchased. He was cagey about it at first, but eventually loosened up and told her the truth.

He had grown bored with the usual missions that he had been assigned. He was sick of always having to play support, always cleaning up someone else’s messes, always laying the groundwork for someone else’s story. So, he had decided to cash in his points, and finally make use of the vacation time he had accrued. He had picked out what looked to be a pretty basic Isekai mission. Ruby suggested not mentioning his luck to anyone else, even she was aware how rare and coveted those missions were.

As the night wound to a close, they said their goodbyes. Before taking her leave, Ruby remembered the other present she had for Jason. A sharp whistle was the only warning she gave him before flicking the coin at his head. Even drunk, the man’s senses were still a thing to marvel at as he caught it in midair .

“The fuck is this?”

“Think of it as a gift.” She snorts.

“Oh, how generous of you. A whole gold coin, whatever will I spend it on.” Jason responds as he jangles the large coin pouch at his hip.

“Oh, fuck off. I’ll take it back if you’re going to be a brat about it.”

Jason drops the coin into his wallet and shakes it again for good measure. “Oops, too late now. Guess you’ll just have to let me keep it.” He gives her a smug grin.

She scoffed before turning around and making for the door. She could hear him activate the token as she closed the door behind her. As she wandered down the hallways back to her room, she pondered the events of the day. The rogue client would need to be dealt with, but she still wasn’t sure if burying him in legal paperwork for the next millennia or two, or just giving him a good old fashion human curb stomping, was the better punishment for his actions.

The choices bounced around in her head till she finally reached her residence. Having made no real progress in deciding her actions, she elected to just table the decision till she woke up next. The God was small time, so it wasn’t like it was going anywhere.

She took her time getting ready to sleep. Being a divine being herself, she didn’t actually NEED to sleep, but she did so enjoy the human customs surrounding the whole process. She took a long hot bath to unwind, before summoning a pair of adorable pajamas. Her body clean, and her mind at peace she laid down in her oversized excessively fluffy bed.

She had barely closed her eyes and began to drift off to blissful sleep, before she was awoken once again by the sound of her alarm going off.

“You have got to be shitting me. HOW?!?!”

2024.05.14 15:25 OmegaGoober They Did Not Think Through Their Cunning Plan

This story was inspired by the following prompt: https://www.reddit.com/humansarespaceorcs/comments/1cqvbwk/humans_are_known_for_building_veryvery_large/
General Kim was awakened from a sound slumber by klaxons. Years of military training kicked in and he was out of bed in record time. Checking the data pad briefly while pulling on his uniform he saw something terrifying.
“Attack in progress. Launch in 10:34.”
An attack? Who? Where? How? What kind? General Kim was soon out the door to his quarters. He was at his battle bridge before the launch countdown had reached 10:00. Similar scenes were playing out throughout the ship, as generals checked in with their battle bridge statuses.
In the ship’s primary bridge, two kilometers from General Kim, Admiral Sol looked at her command display with satisfaction. 100% readiness in less than two minutes. She was pleased. She addressed the 10,000 soul the crew over the PA system. “An allied colony is under attack by enemies unknown. Wormhole travel will take approximately twenty minutes and thirty-four seconds. Prepare for battle.”
General Kim scrolled through the scant field assessment data. There wasn’t much. A large multi-species colony was being bombarded from orbit. No signs of enemy ground forces. The primary wormhole comms array was out, but an old Subspace system was still functional after 120 years of dormancy. “And THAT,” said General Kim, “is what preventative maintenance is for.”
“General, sir?”
“Sorry. Just thinking out loud. Their W23 system is down but they’re still in touch using an SB-Class 3.”
“I think I’ve seen one of those in a museum!”
“Our grandparents saw them in museums. You make do on the rim.”
Launch and wormhole transit went off with clockwork precision. Soon, the ship exited its artificial wormhole. It was immediately bombarded by the unknown hostiles. Explosions of varying kinds went off on the ship’s hull, ripping gashes in her armor.
“Damage report?” Admiral Sol asked.
“Ablative armor at 97%. No other damage reports.”
“Excellent. Inform me when the preliminary weapons analysis is in.”
Meanwhile, the Admiral's counterpart in the invading fleet, Imperial Agent Skrald, was still screaming, “What is that THING?”
“I’ve seen moons smaller than that ship,” said one of his lieutenants.
“We have to have a record of it. You can’t build something that big in complete secrecy!”
“Imperial Agent Skrald, I think it’s the, “Blade of Scoth.”
“That ship’s an old myth! It can’t possibly-“
“We've carved a notch!”
“Send the biggest we’ve got,” the Skrald replied.
A “notch” was a divot in the ship’s hull of the right shape to prevent weapons files from glancing off the armor.
“We’re being hailed, sir!”
“Tell them we don’t talk to burnt food and end the transmission,” the Admiral replied.
Imperial Agent Skrald watched with glee as the missile made contact with the notch and detonated.
On her ship, Admiral Sol asked for another damage report.
“Lower-port ablative armor section 374 at 40%, pinata layer is fully exposed.
“Can it take another direct hit?”
“It was only a gigaton blast. One more should make a perfect crack.”
“Excellent. Order the candy away from the blast point just to be safe.”
“Already done ma'am.”
“Make a note to find out who gave that order so I can commend them on their quick-thinking.”
“Yes Admiral.”
While the invading fleet pivoted their attention to the new ship, a second Terran vessel, the “Rule of Two Rogers” exited its artificial wormhole on the far side of the planet. A swarm of smaller craft flowed from the ship into the atmosphere below.
Imperial Agent Skrald, ignorant of the “Rule of Two Rogers,” was shouting with excitement. “Hit it again! Fire another!” The second missile flew through space, connecting with the underlayer exposed by the last missile. At first, it looked like the ship was spewing out debris, but the debris started flying in formations and shooting at his ships.
On the human ship, the Admiral smiled with satisfaction as she heard the report, “Piñata 86 has been breached. The candy is flowing. I repeat, the candy is flowing.”
“All stations, fire at will,” she replied.
The eyes of Imperial Agent Skrald opened wide as the surface of the massive ship lit up with a multicolored array of missiles, lasers, torpedos, and something that seemed to fire AFTER destroying one of his ships.
“It’s a rainbow of death,” he said, shocked into immobility by the way his fleet was being erased. He came back to his senses when his ship was rocked by debris impact from his erstwhile fleet.
“It’s too big to land!” He yelled. “All ships to the surface! I repeat, all ships retreat to the surface!”
The debris tore off one of his ship’s nacelles. “Did we need that to land?” He yelled.
“Only to get home sir,” an officer replied.
“Good.”
Admiral Sol watched the battle with satisfaction. This was the Blade of Scoth’s first battle in over 100 years. As a descendant of the famous Ambasador Sol, she took her guardianship of the BoS very seriously. A report came up on her screen. The hostiles had been identified. It was one of the Naga Imperium factions, or they were at least using the faction’s ships, weapons and known tactics. “Bastards,” she muttered.
“Admiral?” Lieutenant Cutter said.
“Analysis says it’s the ‘Naga Imperium of the Bone.’ The colony's 20% Naga. They’re slaughtering their own. Have we established direct contact with the colony yet?”
“Not yet Admiral. They don’t seem to have any short-range communications working. We’re still limited to what’s coming over their old subspace system.”
On the planet below, Sally McCool, a Naga hatched and raised in the colony, like her parents and grandparents before her, looked to the night sky. The missiles had come down, glowing brightly as the stars before they impacted. Now, the bright glowing objects had become larger, but many were breaking up and vanishing into nothing. Were these larger bombs, or was the enemy tumbling out of space?
She watched with growing horror as one approached the ground near the south okra field. She took a deep breath, and braced herself to be vaporized by whatever was about to land. Unable to watch, she curled into a ball on the ground, hoping death would be quick. She expected a nuclear flash, obliteration before hearing the blast. Instead, she heard a massive crash, crumpling metal and exploding components, and a long grinding sound as something huge cut into the soil. A rain of stones and soil covered her.
Sally looked up, and took several seconds to process what she was seeing. It hadn’t been a bomb. It had been a ship, and it had just crashed into one of their fields, carving a huge channel as it ground to a halt. A cloud of smoke was rising. Suddenly, a disk-shaped ship shot through the cloud of smoke. She recognized it from her history classes and old war movies. A flying saucer, painted with concentric circles of red, white, and blue. It was a Steve. A Steve class fighter. They were special. Why were they special?
Another saucer flew overhead. This one was red and yellow.
Sally remembered why the Steve battle saucers were special. They were exclusive to a ship called “The Rule of two Rogers.” The Steves were for battle, and this red and gold ship, as it landed she remembered, “It’s a Fred!” She yelled. She waved her arms, calling out to the ship. “We have injured! We have injured!” The side of the saucer opened up, and a multi-species crew of medics poured out.
While medics swarmed the colony providing aid, the best day of Skrald’s life had turned into the worst in a matter of minutes. He looked around his battered bridge. Even the emergency lighting could only manage flickering glimpses of the sparking wreckage around him. The only functional display was informing him the sewage system had ruptured and was pouring into what remained of the ventilation system.
“Is anyone else alive?”
“I TOLD you it was the Blade of Scoth you idiot!”
Skrald straightened his posture as much as the sharp pains in his abdomen would allow. “How DARE you speak to a member of the Imperium that way! I’ll eat you myself for that!”
“Good luck with that. I’m surrendering to the colony.”
“THEY’LL EAT YOUR FLESH AND MAKE SHOES FROM YOUR HIDE!”
“How’s that any better than you eating me?”
Outraged at the insolence, Skrald lunged in the direction of the taunting underling, smashing his snout against a hunk of metal he hadn’t noticed in the dim, flickering light.
Hours later, sunrise came to the battered colony. Most of the fires in the colony proper had been put out, but some of the Naga wreckage was still burning bright. Emergency contamination domes had been put up over the upwind wrecks, to contain as much of the toxic smoke as possible.
General Kim was on the ground, commanding the cleanup crews from both ships. He’d taken a brief break from those responsibilities to speak to one of the captured Naga.
“The guy in the fanciest duds tried to eat you when we took you into custody. Why?”
“I used to be a pilot,” she said. “Until that moron weaseled himself into enough power to do THIS!” She opened up her arms, as if to gesture at everything around her. “The only reason I’m even here is because I objected to this madness. That royal waste of scales wanted to personally mock me when he won. He even put that in writing on the paperwork for my ‘Away Without Leave’ warrant.”
“Weren’t you on his bridge?”
“Yes. You look confused, or at least that’s what my translator is telling me about your expression.”
“I don’t have a lot of combat experience. Nobody does these days, but hand-picking someone for your bridge crew because they have no confidence in you sounds like a bad idea to me.”
“This whole mission was nothing but bad ideas.”
“Please, tell me more.”
Meanwhile, in the darkness of space, a third ship of Capybara / Human design moved silent and unseen. Complex sensor arrays had been tracing the path the invaders had taken, seeking their origin. Data flowed in on interstellar communications problems, often evidence of ships passing though communications tunnels. The Starship Peggy Carter and her crew were on the trail, and the ship had a reputation to uphold. Latin mottos had fallen out of favor decades before she was built, so her motto was written in English.
“Those we fail to defend, we will avenge.”

2024.05.14 15:24 RokinJ3rd Unemployment cut off early need help/rant

Alright so I just need to rant about how god awful the unemployment in this state is, good lord man. So not only do they take forever when it comes to claims but they honest to god have the most dumbest none sensible system I have ever seen. I was on unemployment starting with the week of April 30th and still had plenty of weeks left but my unemployment was cut short and went under expired because of an initial claim that I was going to make back mid 2023 that I didn't go through with because I ended up getting employed so I wasn't able to start a new claim until that one had expired on May 11th. I had no choice but to file for unemployment from this March using that intial claim because there was no option to start a new one. once I did get unemployment they used the time frame from the initial claim last year so it expired on the 11th of this month cutting me short of unemployment and when I called in for help they told me I would have to file a new claim and go through this whole ordeal again which already had me pulling my hair out but I decided to suck it up and tell them to just go ahead and put a new claim for me. Now I wake up today with a notification saying that I did not make enough money to qualify for unemployment which I'm already confused about so I look into it on my portal and they didn't even input my wages for this year or last year correctly which would normally be an easy fix or so I thought but the issue is I don't have any of the numbers for my previous employer and can't really think of a way to get any proof of it. It's driving me insane and I don't know what to do. If someone has any answers to my dilemma I would really appreciate it because honest to go this is just ridiculous, they should have all the info there already considering I literally was already on unemployment for like a month to begin with.

- Partnership with AWS on Blackberry IVY. Blackberry and AWS have co-developed Blackberry IVY. “BlackBerry IVY is an in-vehicle and cloud connected software solution designed to enable software developers to more efficiently build and deploy data-driven middleware services in the vehicle. BlackBerry IVY abstracts vehicle signals and enables developers to process those signals with code, including with Machine Learning. Car makers and software developers benefit from data connectivity savings, reduced development times, and increased agility without having to make a large upfront software investment”. As Blackberry QNX is already embedded into 235m+ vehicles and growing, BLACKBERRY HAS AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY TO UPSELL IVY to every QNX customer, if it gains traction it opens up a whole new revenue explosive stream for Blackberry. Have you heard of Foxconn? They are the world’s largest manufacturer of electronics, most known for making parts for the iPhone. They created MIH (Mobility in Harmony) who have selected Blackberry IVY to power its Next-Generation Electric Production Vehicles. Other notable early customers are Bosch and Mitsubishi. https://www.blackberry.com/us/en/company/newsroom/press-releases/2024/mobility-in-harmony-consortium-selects-blackberry-ivy-to-power-its-next-generation-electric-production-vehicles

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen, who in their right mind would not want to invest in a meme stock that happens to be a tech company in the early growth stage. Let’s all load the fucking boat with shares, and take down every single hedge fund brave enough to short this stock.

2024.05.14 15:23 Zealousideal_Fan4915 AITA for teaching my nephews stuff my brother and his loopy wife don't want them to know.

My brother is a religious nutcase. I person think that's fine as long as it doesn't impact on anyone else.
He is a tradesmen and his wife stays home and homeschools their kids. Once again that is a choice people make and 100% his right.
I was over at his place during the eclipse that just happened and I heard them explaining to the kids how it worked.
It was a fascinating journey into madness. There were secret conspiracies, spheres (not Earth), a dome, and somehow contrails.
I kept my mouth shut until the kids buggered off. Then I asked him if he was just fucking with his kids.
Nope. They actually believe this stuff. And a bunch of other stuff. This is recent. My brother was educated at a regular high school. Our parents are not delusional like this.
This last weekend they were visiting us and the kids were all excited about the Northern Lights being visible. I live out on an acreage so they were Gorge away from the city lights.
My kids asked for an explanation about them so I tried to remember all of the stuff I learned in school about them. About solar particles, magnetic fields, and high altitude atmosphere. I also looked it up on my phone to make sure.
My nephews asked how this was possible on a flat earth and I explained that the flat earth was an idea that weren't away for most people a long time ago.
My brother isn't happy and neither is his wife. They said that it isn't my place to teach their kids ideas that are wrong and disagree with scripture.
I told him that his behaviour with regards to his kids education was borderline abusive. And that I didn't understand why he wants his kids to grow up so ignorant that they cannot get a post secondary education.
He just said it was best if we didn't see each other until I got right with god.
I am a Christian. I still think my brother is a whack job. I don't think I'm wrong for answering his kids questions honestly.

2024.05.14 15:17 RillaBam Off Theme Button…

Is terrible. It offers no benefit and a lot of potential for abuse. In games with competition where players vote on their competitors, giving them the ability to hurt (the update states it will have a negative impact) other player’s score is the first step in creating both an unfair and unbalanced system (these kill gacha games). There will be a punishment for people who abuse it, but that also has massive problems. This game is too big for devs to check every single “off theme” flag BEFORE results are in. That means players are going to be stuck with bad scores, and players will probably have to report something multiple times for them to look at you. How bad are the punishments for reporting things off theme going to be? If it’s too weak, problem not solved, if it’s too strong you again create fear of using that feature.
This also isn’t good for f2p or people who missed limited shops/gachas. There are plenty of comps where I’ve had to be creative slightly off theme because I didn’t have any of the options to make the specific prompt, or I haven’t seen the movie it’s based off of so I go off the tags. Now that could be voted off theme. The fact that it negatively impacts you is the problem. It limits creativity out of fear of getting a worse score.
Look, I’m sorry some people don’t like seeing wings or fairy dresses when they vote, just don’t vote for them or skip it. This new function stems from player demand for it and has the ability to really hurt the game
