To preface this post, I want to give the disclaimer that like many things, there is not a black and white answer the question. I'm writing this as an experienced tech professional, and the information provided is based on opinion.
To start with. A little bit of history..
The golden age of software engineering(and similar jobs) is over. At least for the next 5 - 10 years. I don't think this is an unpopular opinion. The reason why between the years of 2010 - 2022, these jobs exploded, was because of the boom of the internet for commercial and personal use.
This is different from the dotcom boom of 2000s, where the internet was just starting and most of the products being created were for basic things like: putting banking on the internet, putting videos on the internet, etc.
The boom in the 2010s was related to the widespread popularity of commercial and personal products. Things like Uber, Spotify, and Salesforce. With the sudden increased usage of the digital world, there were MILLIONS of companies rushing to create digital products.
However, we're starting to see the rise and fall of some of these products, millions of startups failings, and less VC funding. In case you don't know, VC stands for Venture Capital, which are basically investment companies that give money to other companies to help them grow and develop, in return for partial ownership of the company.
As the industry began to mature, successful companies started to emerge, and many more started to fail.
The present day..
Software engineering and like jobs will continue to be important, and there will be a high demands for these engineers. Nearly every company will still need a website, a place to manage their data, and people to manage their hardware. BUT.. the basic technologies they need to run their company will become more efficient. AND there will be less research and innovation because the a lot of the trial and error already occurred.
We're in a weird spot where the demand for workers is now decreasing from it's recent peaks, and the supply of workers is now increasing because of how all the benefits of being a software engineer in the past decade.
This has really unfortunate consequences for any recent graduates or others trying to break into the tech field. There are WAY more beginning career people than jobs available. Which is made even worse with the amount of layoffs there are, where mid-level employees are now having to settle for entry level jobs.
What can we do?
I have two pieces of advice for people interested in the topic, or wanting to break into the field but can't. Try breaking in from a adjacent field, where you can get some exposure to tech. Things that data entry, analytics(this can be finance, supply chain etc). Then try to learn as much as you can from the tech people at your company.
The second piece of advice. Go into a different field. Software engineering is not for everyone. You have to learn and understand some relatively complex topics, and it's becoming harder and harder to be competitive in the industry. Healthcare, supply chain, and many other industries are booming right now.
Understanding history, you can see that certain industries will rise and fall. For the near future, technology might be one of the harder careers to break into. Something like healthcare would be that's expected to grow exponentially. The average population of the world is getting older, as less and less people are wanting to have kids. There will be higher demand for healthcare professionals and healthcare technology.
Do your best to review and understand these trends, and hopefully you can create a good life and career. Best of luck!

So I just graduated from my university with my bachelor's degree (in a health profession) and will be attending the same school this fall for my masters degree. While preparing for grad school, I applied for a scholarship offered by my school and applied for a GA position, but unfortunately, I'll be starting grad school with neither. I'm obviously upset because I wasn't considered, but I also feel frustrated because of the circumstances surrounding these situations. I could use opinions on whether I'm acting irrationally because of hurt feelings or if I'm involved in a potentially unfair situation.
When I was applying for my school's masters program, I only applied to one of the merit-based scholarships that they offered. While I did do this for financial reasons (the scholarship I applied to offered the biggest financial reward), I also did this because I believed I didn't fully qualify for the other scholarships (for example, one scholarship stated it would show preference to a student that had experience and wanted to work with clients of a specific age with a specific diagnosis, and I lack experience with this demographic). So I knew that I had a small chance of receiving any scholarship money from my school, given my own decison to only apply for one. It turns out that applying didn't even matter though, as I found out that more than one person was rewarded with one of these scholarships, even though they stated themselves that they never even applied for them. How is it fair for someone to be granted a scholarship they didn't apply to? Each scholarship required letters of rec and a personal statement outlining why they'd be a good fit, personal experience, and proof of commitment towards our field. How could they get these scholarships without putting in the necessary requirements? And, of course, this made me wonder that if an application didn't matter, why wasn't I considered?
I'm also frustrated with what's been happening with the GA position. Faculty gave us a vague idea of when the applications for this position would open, but never ACTUALLY announced it to us at large. It took me checking our school's career page every week to see if applications had opened. When I asked a professor for a letter of rec for my application, they accidentally revealed that some of my other classmates had already asked for a letter, and thus, had already applied. So not only did our program fail to inform all of us of when the applications opened, but some of my own classmates knew about it and kept it to themselves. During the last week of class, I found out that I had qualified for an interview. I heavily prepared for my interview and honestly thought I did really well, but I wasn't chosen. I don't know how many other people also got an interview (it definitely wasn't everyone who applied), but I do know of some other people who got an interview, and I have a gut feeling that they might've been chosen. And tbh, if it was just them and me who made it to the interview process, I never stood a chance. I have nothing against them; they're incredibly kind and considerate people who have also worked hard to succeed in our program and extracurriculars. We all get along well even if we have our different friend groups. However, there's definitely an ounce of preferential treatment that sometimes goes their way that has been felt by myself and others. This is obviously all speculation, because I don't actually know if they're the ones who were chosen, but I was taken aback that upon hearing that I wasn't considered, some of my other classmates came to the same idea/conclusion that I did: that they must've been chosen for the positions. I can't help but wonder if they really are the ones who were chosen, and I can't stop wondering what it is that I'm lacking in comparison.
It's not like I was an irresponsible student either. I graduated with honors and a 3.86 gpa. I was part of our program's club and also served on the executive board for it. I never had a missed or late assignment and I only missed class once due to an illness that was excused. I performed well during clinicals, being given full marks by my supervisors, and more than once, my professors referenced my work ethic and diligence in succeeding in the work/expectations they gave me. Rationally, I know that they were also qualified, but given past experiences, I can't help but think that part of the reason I wasn't chosen for any of the scholarships or the position may be due to preferential treatment.
Someone please tell me if i'm reacting like a butthurt child or if my concerns are warranted. I'm more upset than anything after finding out I wasn't considered for either of these opportunities (and not knowing why), and I need to know if i'm being irrational.

There is no Benefit Verification Letter available yet, however I received an email on 3/22/2024 [Friday] that my submission status has been updated. I called my caseworker on 03/26 and was told that I have been approved. I know she was not supposed to tell me, but she did. I’m trying not to get too excited and wait on the letter to make sure. I know this sounds childish, but I'm having a hard time figuring it out anyway. My friend Julie and I have been having problems in our friendship for a while. For background information: we've been friends since 2020 and at first it was a normal friendship, but then she became increasingly demanding and needy, and jealous of my other friendships. Julie said she'd help me baking the cake, but on the day of the event she texted me saying she had traveled to the countryside with her new boyfriend, and she couldn't help me with the cake nor go to the party. I am an introvert and she knows it, I'm not the type to go to parties where I know no one, but I decided to go because I had already payed for it. But after that, I decided to stop talking to Julie.
The thing is, I have a book club with a few friends and Julie was part of it since the beginning. We have a rule that says that if you do not participate in three meetings consecutively you're out (to make space for other people that want to participate). Julie had said she would come for the last three meetings, but never showed up, so I decided to kick her out of the club. She begged to stay, saying she was having mental health problems and that the book club was the one thing keeping her sane. I said I was sorry to hear that, but I didn't see how the book club was helping, seeing she never read the books or went to the meetings, and kicked her out anyway. But now I'm thinking I may have been to harsh, because if it were someone else, I probably would let them stay, but I just want to Julie to be completely out of my life and that was the last link between us. TLDR: GP gave insurer medical records about me without asking.
Background: I was involved with several incidents last year, which really impacted my health. I was paying for it out of my own pocket, but after some persuading by my mates I decided to go through workers comp. The specialist bills and rehab start to add up fast! So mostly just wanted help with that as I get back to normal. So I went to the GP and got him to fill out some paperwork.
As part of the application, you have to agree to let the insurer contact your doctors. I assumed that the process would be like: 1. Insurer writes to my GP 2. GP let's me know (in general terms) what they want. 3. I can say yes or no. Or, at least my GP would tell me shortly after the fact.
Sure, it might be better if the insurer has access to information. Otherwise it might look like I'd just made stuff up. But I still would've liked to be asked, or know it'd happened.
I wasn't asked. The insurer got a letter from my GP, a list of medications I take, and patient records about me. Some were related to the claim, and some weren't.
This all has me feeling a bit uncomfortable. I'm no longer seeing this GP. But I guess I wanted to know if it's normal? I have no idea because I've never been through anything like this before.

So one of my housemates, had a bit of a financial problem, had a lot of things to pay for but not enough money to do so. They’re also dealing with some health issues. They were served a notice about potential court proceedings if they don’t move out due to rent arrears. As soon as they got the letter they realised just how bad the situation was and emailed to apologise and inform the housing association that they will make sure to prioritise rent basically. So they’ve paid £150-£250 weekly for a while, but today got an email asking when they’re leaving.
In the notice it stated an option would be to attempt contact and see if something could be put in place to pay the rent and avoid eviction, so they’ve done that but were ignored for like 2 months.
The landlord does not keep this place well maintained at all, ie: black mould, boiler shut downs, constant repeated leaks, etc… and have also allowed drug dealers to continue living here despite illegal activity being forbidden through tenancy agreement. These dealers have had police called on them, and still gotten away with living here. However this housemate being evicted has done everything by the books (besides rent but had began getting on track again).
This person has nowhere to go and no family. What can be done? If anything? Who should they contact?

Tips for employee in interactive process meeting
I’ve submitted paperwork to my employer requesting reasonable accommodations for several chronic health issues I have. This included my doctor’s information and sign-off. Next, I’m due to meet with my bosses and HR soon (starting the interactive process).
1) Any tips for the employee in this meeting and process? 2) If my employer comes back with alternate accommodations to those I suggested, am I able to take time to review these options, or do I have to give an answer on the spot in the meeting? 3) The letter from my employer stated that I can bring representation to the meeting. Firstly, who would this be (Union rep, lawyer?) and secondly, is this recommended?

This is partially a GP problem. The previous refusal letter also mentioned lack of "persistent significant functional impairment, as well as the information about persistent symptoms from early childhood" and yet the doctor did not take an inventory of my difficulties or of my childhood symptoms."
It's been 2 years of trying to get an assessment. So far the doctors I have access to have not been very responsive. I did my own screening online when the doctor failed to. Is there also online self-assessments for functional impairments and symptoms from early childhood?
I just want to do it myself and give it to the doctor, rather than deal with them continue to insufficiently represent me in the referral.

I was reading a story in instagram. Basically the story was that the MIL invited her daughter, her son and her DIL to dinner then after the dinner told the DIL to go wash all the dishes because apparently her leg hurt and her daughter was pregnant so there was no one else to do it. DIL got mad and left to go to her mom's home and is not coming back unless they apologize.

Below you'll find information and links to help advocate for Reproductive Freedoms and Abortion care in Canada and emerging policy issues with the Reddit platform. Advocating for Abortion Care in Canada:

• There is a serious lack of Abortion Care options in Canada, particularly in the rural areas, and for those living on reserves, they have almost no access to Abortion care. People may have to travel more than 100km and across provincial lines to access abortion. Some have to travel by plane from their rural community to one with an abortion clinic or hospital. This puts an unfair financial and logistical burden on those that need to access abortion care. Provincial Health Insurance Plans do not cover travel costs related to receiving medical care.
• Because many provinces have few facilities that provide Abortion care, this places an unreasonable load on the clinics that do exist, forcing clients to look elsewhere for facilities with capacity to help them. In Alberta, there is one clinic for every 209,077 people who can become pregnant (number of assigned-at-birth females between the ages of 15-29). PEI, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory each only have 1 Abortion care provider. Nunavut only has 2 abortion providers, and of those, only one offers medical abortion covered by the provincial health insurance plan. In fact, 9 (out of a total of 13) Canadian provinces and territories have five or fewer facililities offering abortion care in their entire province. And 10 Canadian provinces and territories have one or fewer (0) rural facililities offering abortion care.
• Some provinces, like PEI, have more restrictive guidelines regarding abortion, limiting access to abortion care to those with a gestational period of less than 12 weeks (meaning, 12 weeks since the first day of your last period, not 12 weeks since you discovered you were pregnant). Many people who menstruate have irregular periods. Some people might only menstruate every 2 or 3 months, and might only discover that they are pregnant near the gestation limit of 12 weeks.
• Insurance coverage also limits access to abortions. Provinces such as Nunavut do not offer coverage for medical abortions unless they are prescribed and performed in a hospital. And being a rural province, there also happens to be only 1 hospital in Nunavut - Qikiqtani General Hospital in Iqualuit. New Brunswick will only cover abortion services in a hospital setting, which means that abortion medical care provided in clinics are not covered by their Provincial Health Insurance Plan.
• Sexual and reproductive health services are among the services that physicians, pharmacists and nurse practitioners are most frequently unwilling to provide on moral or religious grounds. People may be harassed and attacked while visiting an Abortion clinic may experience stigma and/or discrimination from their peers, especially in smaller, rural communities where everyone knows one another. People refused care by health care professionals because of personal beliefs may experience stigma and/or discrimination, forcing them to travel outside of their community to receive the care they need. This can all be particularly daunting for young people or those with limited resources.
• Everyone in Canada is supposed to have equal rights to access health care, regardless of race, age, class, immigration status, gender expression, sexuality and ability. Nevertheless, anyone's right to seek abortion care can be be impacted by discrimination and bigotry, both systemic and as a result of individual prejudice on the part of service providers. Racism, xenophobia, classism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and ageism in Canada are all direct and intersecting barriers to accessing abortion. It is much more difficult for a person who doesn’t speak English to access abortion services, despite the presence of a translator. Transpeople also experience discrimination at higher rates in reproductive health care settings. Providers may also lack the knowledge or training to provide trans-affirming abortion care and abortion services are typically housed within *women’s* health care departments.
• Further compounding the issue of inequitable abortion access are unregulated crisis pregnancy centres (CPCs), which are anti-choice pregnancy centres that advertise in hospitals, doctor's offices, churches, schools and community centre. They deceive people coming to them for options and advice by giving misinformation about abortion or by insisting on options that may delay or interfere with the clients ability to access the care they need. CPCs far outnumber abortion care providers in Canada. In Ontario alone, there are 77 active CPCs but only 38 abortion care providers. Overall, in Canada, there are 165 known CPCs compared to 147 abortion care providers (as of August 2022).

What can you do to improve access to abortion care in Canada?

1. Listen, research and learn. This is always the first step to understand any problem.
2. Send a letter to your MP and MPP. Tell them that access to abortion care is important and how difficult it can be to access it in your province. Urge them to prevent anti-choice groups and CPCs from receiving charitable status, and to revoke the charitable status from CPCs that already have it. Encourage them to include reasonable reimbursement for travel costs related to receiving medical care when it is not available in your community. And push them to pass Safe Access Zone Legislation to protect patients, practitioners and their staff from anti-choice harassment and intimidation.
3. Give a donation to a pro-choice charitable organization of your choice. Remember, if you give a total of $201 CDN or more to Canadian charitable organizations, you'll get a credit of 29% of your total annual donations on your income taxes (for those that file Canadian Income Taxes, only).
4. Sign up for the Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada Newsletter. https://www.arcc-cdac.ca/
5. Participate in local marches and rallys in support of access to abortion care.
6. Spread the Word. Tell your friends and family. Encourage them to research, listen and learn. Encourage them to contact their MPP and MPs.
7. If you work in a Doctor's office or as a family physician, consider incorporating Mifegymiso into your practice to ensure patients have timely access to this essential service. If you are a Doctor, or studying to be one, consider opening an Abortion Care practice when you are licensed and qualified to do so, especially in rural areas where there are a lack of options.
8. If you work in politics, consider proposing legislation that will ensure safe access zones for abortion care providers and their clients and covering reasonable travel costs for constituents when medical care is not available in their community.
9. If you are a journalist or work in media, consider preparing pieces sharing the difficulty Canadians can have accessing medical care such as abortions.
10. If you work in the area of Not For Profit/Advocacy, consider partnering with a Pro-choice organization and helping them spread information and lobby for improving access to abortion care for Canadians.
11. If you know someone who needs abortion care, consider giving them a ride to a clinic, helping them access the advice and care they need, and provide non-judgemental support.
12. Emerging Policy Issues with Reddit
On July 1, 2023, Reddit raised the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that killed every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader. This policy change meant that mobile users would have a lesser experience browsing Reddit, users with visual difficulties could not browse reddit as screenreaders are not compatible with the official Reddit app, and mods lost tools that they depend on to keep communities on-topic and spam-free. Many subreddits protested this change in June 2023, and the Reddit admins enforced draconian measures such as removing and replacing mods who privatized their subreddits in protest of this policy change.
On September 12, 2023, Reddit will eliminate reddit coins, including removing all accumulated coins, a perk that Reddit Premium users pay for every month. Coins are used to reward comments and posts by showing your appreciation for the effort. Some reddit coins offer the ability to use reddit without ads.
