2024.05.13 11:14 Commercial_Cicada910 What do you think about this Navy job? Going enlisted or officer route?
TLDR: I am getting in the Italian Navy with a Master's. With my Master's I can only do a specific officer role, it' similar to a logistics / finance officer. I have pasted the full description of the role below, in detail. Can you please tell me based on the info below what you think about this job? Is it exciting or boring? How do you think it compares with going the enlisted route (Warrant Officer position) based on what I wrote?
I (25M) am finishing a Master's Degree in Business from a top school, and I am going into the Italian Navy (yes I know this is a US centred sub, but it does not matter, just pretend the rules and organizations are the same and then I'll just filter the info from your answers by myself). There are only 2 relevant differences to keep in mind:
1) In my situation I can become a Warrant Officer (it's a NCO role) through a Navy School that provides me with a Bachelor's Degree (in my case, I'd choose Engineering) and then you're basically middle management between enlisted and officers. It's got its pros in my opinion, I really like it and it keeps my options unlimited (I get an engineering degree, I can go T1 special ops, I can do any MOS I want, I can deploy, I am not limited by my previous Degree). I just don't love the huge pay gap obviously
2) The main difference between officers in the Italian Navy and the US Navy is that you can't major in anything you want and then be commissioned in any role as an officer... you're bound to what you majored in. I majored in Business Econ + Law so I can only be commissioned in the role described below.
THIS IS THE FULL ROLE DESCRIPTION BY THE ITALIAN NAVY / WIKIPEDIA:
" The Italian Navy Commissariat Corps is a technical Corp composed only of officers of the Italian Navy.
Like all the Italian Navy corps, it is made up only of officers coming for the most part from the Law degree of the Naval Academy or, in some cases, selected from direct appointment competitions within the civilian population, or from the Special Role (NCOs becoming officers due to seniority).
The Maritime Military Commissariat Corps was established in 1876. The officers of the Commissariat Corps provide the Navy with an important contribution in the financial, legal, administrative and logistical fields, perpetuating in peace as in war the glorious maritime traditions of the Armed Force. The Commissariats of the Navy were created in the 16th century by Cosimo I de Medici, who provided the galleys and galleons of the Tuscan navy with officers in charge of ensuring the enforcement of laws and trade agreements in the ports where the ships sailed. The figure quickly spread to European navies.
The Corps' tasks includes logistical/administrative management, fund management, inspection of accounts, legal advice and litigation management.
They are also sent to the Commands ashore - including the Navy High Command - to further broaden their professional background and experience, also by attending numerous specialised courses (internship at the Attorney General's Office, courses in naval escort management or for helicopter specialists, etc.).
After achieving the rank of Lieutenant, they are sent back on board for a period of about two years with the position of Head of Logistics Service.
On board of naval units, this commissioned officer is entrusted with numerous tasks and responsibilities in various areas, including administrative, financial and logistical management, procurement and management of materials and equipment for the maintenance of the ship and the embarked air component, advice on legal and disciplinary matters, as well as any other task, including external relations, specifically entrusted to him by the ship's command.
Career development sees Commissary officers employed at the Commands/Entities ashore in a variety of employment sectors and with increasing levels of responsibility. These include, in particular, administrative/logistical management and control activities, financial planning in coordination with the Ministry of the Economy and Finance, and policy-making in the areas of personnel management and justice and discipline.
Moreover, following the Navy's growing involvement in international law enforcement, humanitarian and peace-keeping activities, in near and far seas (Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf, Lebanon, humanitarian emergencies in Indonesia and Haiti, etc.), some Commissary officers are temporarily assigned to ships and operational headquarters deployed in crisis areas with duties of legal advice on international and humanitarian law and the application of the rules of engagement during the mission;
To this end, they receive specialised professional training centred on courses in humanitarian law, dedicated university executive degrees, internships at foreign Navies, etc.
At the top of their career ladder, they may hold the position of Director-General of a commissariat or Central Director of the Ministry of Defence. "
Based on what you read, what do you guys think of this job? I'm trying to comparing it to the enlisted route
thank you very much for any suggestion or comment!

Last Week in Collapse: May 5-11, 2024 This is
Last Week in Collapse, a weekly newsletter compiling some of the most important, timely, useful, soul-crushing, ironic, stunning, exhausting, or otherwise must-see/can’t-look-away moments in Collapse.
This is the 124th newsletter. You can find the April 28-May 4 edition
here if you missed it last week. You can also receive these posts (with images) every Sunday in your email inbox

Earth experienced its
largest CO2 concentration increase over a 12-month period, scientists say, from March 2023-2024. It was a
jump of 4.7ppm more of carbon dioxide, blamed on deforestation, fossil fuels, and El Niño. Experts are saying that
El Niño has peaked, and will transition to La Niña within a few months.
La Niña lasts about 1-3 years, and it generally cools the Pacific Ocean, and brings more rain to India & Bangladesh, among
other changes. Earth also experienced
its greatest atmospheric moisture for the month of April.
Venezuela has
lost its last glacier, the Humboldt, which was reclassified into an “
ice field.” It is the first modern nation to lose all its glaciers. Scientists believe Indonesia, Mexico, and Slovenia are next in line to see the extinction of their glaciers. Colombia is also
rapidly losing its remaining 6 glaciers.
Wildfires in Chile have killed
about a hundred people, and
injured & displaced thousands. Flooding
in Afghanistan. And climate change
is ruining cotton crops, and livestock, in Chad. Plus,
flooding struck the DRC,
overflowing rivers and latrines—affecting some 500,000 people. And some climatologists think we have been
underestimating how much climate change is driving greater rainfall & flooding; the worst is yet to come.
The first week of May saw so many temperature records broken; some are
claiming that it might be the “
most record breaking month in climatic history”—until June, that is. Earth has been seeing
13 months of monthly records being broken for global sea surface temperatures. Literally
365 days of record-breaking ocean temperatures.
A
study in
PNAS examined North Pacific “
warm blob” heat waves from 2010-2020, and concluded that
China’s reduction in aerosols, which cleaned the air but also removed the sun-reflective particles, incidentally probably caused
marine heat waves which killed fish and resulted in algae blooms.
Bees are
having difficulty acclimatizing their nests to rising temperatures. The dugong, while still rarely seen in parts of the world, has
been declared extinct inside China, having gone 24 years without a known sighting. In Florida, the suburbification of land under development is
pushing the Florida panther closer to extinction; some 100 panthers remain in the sunshine state.
Siberia’s Batagaika crater—I prefer its alternative title, “megaslump”—is
expanding by about 1M cubic meters, every year. Scientists naturally
blame the rapid permafrost melting on climate change.
A cruise ship entered New York City
with an endangered 44 ft {13.4m} dead sea whale stuck on its bow (front). Investigators are looking into whether it was already dead when the ship hit it. A
study in
Conservation Letters looked at the 100 largest Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)—which cover 7.3% of all ocean area—and found that almost
60% of this area is not in range of meeting the 2030 preservation goals.
Part of India
broke May records already; the
Maldives, too. Eastern Ukraine
ended a far warmer & wetter April than usual. And a
heat wave in Mexico scorched previous May temperature records across 10 cities, as well as small regional blackouts. North America felt its all-time
hottest May temperature...

AstraZeneca is
pulling its COVID vaccine from the EU over a rare blood clooting side effect. Nevertheless, some experts claim
that vaccine saved over 6M lives. Whatever U.S.
CDC data on COVID is still available points to “
a small rise” in cases later this summer, mostly from the growing
KP.2 “FLiRT” variant.
COVID patients and immunocompromised individuals are
still using lots of healthcare resources, and the rise of
resistant superbugs is developing alarmingly fast. According to the article, “It only takes about a year on average for bacteria to grow resistant to treatment, when they used to take 21 years to evolve back in the 1960s.”
Engineers and medical professionals
remain concerned about nanoplastics, between 1-1,000 nanometers wide. One grain of sand is about 500,000 nanometers, and one strand of DNA is about 2.5 nanometers. A single wavelength of light ranges from 400-700 nanometers.
South Africa’s
water shortage is projected to worsen through at least 2025. Nairobi’s
water shortage continues, despite the city’s dams being filled with floodwater. Costa Rica is facing a Drought so bad
it’s rationing electricity. Mexico City—the second-most-populous city (by metro area: 21.8M; São Paolo is #1, at 22M) in North America— is seeing
more than 20% of freshwater sources exhausted, and rationing is not enough. It’s almost like we’re living at unsustainable levels of consumption…
As Latin America warms (and suffers flooding),
disease is becoming more common—as well as
heat stroke & serious hunger. Benin is
refusing Niger the permission to use its port to export oil, as a result of a border dispute.
A
paywalled study in
Nature Water tested a
new method for removing PFAS foam particles in water, with “near-complete destruction of PFAS in various water samples contaminated by the foams.” The process involves “ultra-violet (UV) light, sulfite, and a process called electrochemical oxidation” and does not require heat or high pressure. The number of U.S. states phasing out PFAS
is growing.
As
forcible repatriations of thousands of Afghans continue,
millions of Afghans are suffering from lack of humanitarian aid—aggravated by
recent deadly flash floods in the beleaguered, landlocked, failed state.
Yeasty superfungus
Candida Auris infections
were detected in 77 cases in Germany last year, authorities say.
Candida Auris was only identified 15 years ago, but its three separate genetic variants (each on a different continent) have stealthily and stubbornly grown to pose a
stealth threat to humankind. It is incredibly resistant to antifungal drugs, and it survives at higher temperatures than most other fungi. The
WHO has listed it on a shortlist of top fungal pathogen dangers.
3 cats
died from H5N1 in the United States last week. Some health professionals
are getting more worried about a future H5N1 jump to become human-to-human transmissible, and claim that we are not ready as a species. Experts say
we are not doing enough testing, and may already be in the prologue of a much more devastating pandemic. Scientists still say
it is unlikely that a strain will make the critical mutation necessary, but the similarities between human and cow (and other mammal) flu receptors present potential complications.
The world is supposedly being
divided into three general trade blocs: U.S., China, and the non-aligned states. For better or worse,
globalization is crumbling, and governments are imposing tariffs, attempting to reshore industries, and restructure debt & credit flows. What will happen when the people, long-trained to expect high returns, find their profits wanting?
——————————
Two camps for internally displaced people near
Goma, DRC
were bombed, killing 12+ and injuring 20+. The perpetrators and their motives are unclear.
Rising crime. Drinking water. Closing the Darien Gap. These were the issues
propelling Panama’s president-elect to a victory last Sunday. The arrival of rain
is also improving conditions on the Drought-choken Panama Canal, expected to
return to normal for at least a month or two.
A
wave of Chinese espionage, much of it several years old, is sweeping Europe. Of particular concern is
a hack of British military personnel information uncovered on Tuesday—which China denies. Similar
espionage against the U.S. has reportedly cost the economy hundreds of billions per year.
Kenya’s
mission to stabilize Haiti is inching forward slowly. The Pentagon has
ordered its 1,000 troops to leave Niger. At least one Saudi villager was
killed to make room for The Line, and reports claim Saudi forces have been given the green light to clear other people who get in the way of the development. Germany’s Defence Ministry is
seriously considering recommending conscription for its 18-year olds later this summer.
Displacement in Myanmar has spiked over the past six months—and now counts 3M+ people since the
February 2021 coup which sparked more open resistance.
Tunisia ejected ~400 migrants into Libya. Kazakhstan is
expelling Tajik migrants in far-ranging sweeps. In Lebanon,
vigilante attacks against Syrians have become more common. Mauritania
is conducting military drills along part of its border with Mali, after reports emerged of
Malian soldiers attacking border settlements.
In Sudan, over 200 witnesses corroborated reports of
a massacre last June, where RSF insurgents
piled up and shot” at least 17 people, most of whom were children. A
lengthy report from Human Rights Watch, complete with timelines, testimony, war crimes, and other
horrors from Sudan is over 150 pages. I did not have the fortitude to skim much of it.
A
Hamas attack on Sunday, which killed 4 Israeli soldiers, reportedly pushed the Rafah invasion ahead of schedule. The IDF
took over the Egypt-Gaza border, and is
scaling up operations in southern Gaza. In response, the
U.S. paused arms transfers to Israel. Any chance of a ceasefire, if there was ever really a credible chance, will have to wait. Diarrhea is soaring in Gaza, due in large part to
a critical water shortage, caused by the destruction of wastewater treatment plants, the damage to water infrastructure, and large-scale displacement. A
new evacuation order has commanded over 1M people in Gaza to leave before a more comprehensive invasion of Rafah begins.
A day after President Putin was inaugurated for his fifth term, he ordered
a wide strike at Ukrainian infrastructure across seven oblasts. Most of the missiles and drones
were shot down. And another
plot to assassinate Zelenskyy was foiled. Lithuania is considering
sending military trainers into Ukraine. Putin
announced that
Russian forces would target Western soldiers deployed in Ukraine, and
begin drills simulating nuclear weapons if Britain’s involvement grows. Already,
Belarus conducted a military drill with missiles & planes capable of using nukes.
In addition to
extending Ukraine’s mobilization by another 90 days, the government has also
allowing some convicts to fight on the battlefield in exchange for reduced sentences. Poland is allegedly
considering repatriating thousands of draft-eligible Ukrainian men, and Germany is
emphasizing the need for Ukrainian refugees to work.
Japan is
boosting investment in a hypersonic missile interceptor project with the United States. A
large-scale Russian offensive has begun across the front-lines, particularly around Kharkiv. And Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs
is beginning talk of a
“genocide” in Moldova, which could provide the
pretext for another special military operation in Transnistria—and perhaps beyond.

2024.05.11 13:56 New_Low_2504 Islam is not the fastest growing religion in the world.
Well to be honest Islam is said to be the fastest growing religion in the world. This was said as per a PEW research study years ago. However I have noticed a trend in muslim countries.Their birthrates are falling very fast.By fast I mean REAL FAST.
Indonesia's birthrate in 1970 was 5.3,today it is 2.1. Bangladesh had a birthrate of 6.8 in 1971 but now it's 1.9. Algeria's fertility dropped from 7.6 in 1971 to 2.8 in 2021. Libya dropped from 8.1 to 2.4 Oman dropped from 8.1 to 2.6 Egypt dropped from 6.7 to 2.9 Malaysia dropped from 6.1 to 1.8 Morocco dropped from 7 to 2.3 Tunisia dropped from 6.9 to 2. Qatar dropped from 6.7 to 1.8.
Similarly it is said that Islam has a lot of converts but their net gain is literally zero.By that I mean that the number of people to join Islam is equal to the number of people leaving it. In the US about 100 K people leave it per year. In France 15 K do so. About 24% of western adults who were raised muslim have swayed away from the cult. About more that 60% of Iran's population is now non-muslim. Turkey is about 18% atheist.Among the youth the number is 28.5%. Then how the hell is Islam the fastest growing religion?
(Every peice of detail is from Google and Wikipedia.I've made nothing out of myself and you can even check the aforementioned fertility rates. )

2024.05.09 07:52 mo_al_amir While Christianity is dying everywhere and Christian youth are leaving the faith. Political Islam is on the rise and Muslim youth are becoming even more religious than before
From
Arab barometer, Middle east Muslim became even more religious than last decade and are more supportive of Islamic theocracy, I remember when apostate prophet posted the decline in 2019 and I got happy, but it has made a huge come back since then.
From
latest Malaysian elections: Both Malay Muslim adult and Youth are voting more for Malaysian Islamic party (PAS) that supports for full Islamic theocracy of Malaysia, PAS even gain the most seats in recent elections, highest as it ever has. Surprisingly the trend of Malay Muslim youth are becoming
more regressive and religious than before. Indonesia also having the same trend
Pakistani youth getting more religious and supportive of Islamic rule more than ever (world values survey)
With other things like 3-4 generation of Western Muslim immigrants are even more religious than their parents, and the victory of Taliban over Afghanistan. It’s seem that Political Islam and Islamism are really on the rise contrast to the trend of other religions that new generations are becoming less religious and are more tolerant.
I always thought that was because there's a decline in secret, but no! Even in central Asia, which is ruled by communist dictators who ban Hijab and beards, there's a still a rise in religiosity and people go to mosque and wear Hijab more than ever, despite them going to jail for that!
The only exception is Iran and even there the decline is in Shiaism while the Sunni percentage is increasing
The future of progressive Muslim or Ex-Muslim is really grim indeed. It’s just made me depressed. For me Muslim countries will never have a boom of atheism like in the west and they won’t achieve it in many decades after this.
Sorry for a long rant. Feel free to correct me. 👍

2024.05.08 00:42 kansai2kansas TIL pabrik sepatu Bata berasal dari Czechia, dan bukan produk Indonesia sama sekali
Sebetulnya aku udah tau sejak beberapa bulan lalu sih.

2024.05.05 13:12 Vagaland How wealthy is India?
Lately I've been trying to research how wealthy Indian citizens are. Whenever I've tried to discuss this with my peers in India, they've told me that lots of Indians are wealthy but they don't pay income taxes. So we will need to dig a bit deeper and estimate based of indirect metrics.
1. Number of iPhones sold in a year. Apple sold 10 million iPhones in India in 2023 compared to 50 million sold in China in 2021. It's hard to find an accurate number for the last year.
https://www.livemint.com/technology/apple-tops-india-smartphone-revenue-in-2023-nears-10-bn-mark-11706708396436.html https://www.gizchina.com/2022/08/26/apple-china-sold-380-million-iphone-smartphones-in-10-years/ 2. Number of netflix/ott subscribers in India. Netflix - 6.5 Million and Hotstar - 40 Million.
https://tcrn.ch/48ULkKr 3. Number of people who have at-least flown by air in the preceding year. There no data on unique flyers but total passengers were 450M. Given that most flights would be a round trip, we can divide this number by 2 and get 225 million. This would likely be the upper ceiling of the unique flyers if there were no repeat flyers (unlikely).
https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/indias-domestic-air-passenger-traffic-touches-record-high-on-nov-19/articleshow/105356249.cms?from=mdr 4. Amount of data transferred from Steam servers to India. India - 6.8 PB, Indonesia (with 5 times less population) - 6.4 PB, China - 292 PB, Australia (with 50 times less population) - 17.8 PB
https://store.steampowered.com/stats/content/ Either we in India don't play any games or we don't have money to buy games or there isn't any private space in house to play games for most people or maybe there is some other reason.
5. Number of monthly unique users of Youtube in India. 460 Million -
https://www.statista.com/statistics/280685/number-of-monthly-unique-youtube-users/ 6. Number of people who have at-least ordered once from a food delivery app in the last year. 60 million estimate from -
https://www.goldmansachs.com/intelligence/pages/indias-affluent-population-is-likely-to-hit-100-million-by-2027.html Lastly biggest consumer markets -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_largest_consumer_markets By these metrics, India is clearly growing but the start base is very low. Just 40-60 million people in India have enough disposable income to spend on non-necessities as above. That’s like a small middle-income country. Indonesia is a surprise to me; they seem to have a done a decent job lately. This number would likely grow to ~100 million soon but at the cost of growing inequality. India has not been investing enough into its education sector and without that it can’t be like USA and EU who invented steam engine, processors, smartphones operating systems, internet and now AI advancements. Without education, a nation can not build new sources of wealth and will likely be forever bound by its natural resources and be dependent on others to share new technology.

2024.05.01 10:47 Flamesty Seberapa besar peluang untuk menjadi penulis di Indonesia?
Halo Komodos
Setelah menonton beberapa anime terkenal seperti Tensura, Overlord, Konosuba, dsb. aku mencoba searching dikit-dikit lah tentang sumbernya. Ternyata semuanya berasal dari website Jepang namanya
Shōsetsuka ni Narō. Jadi ternyata peluang buat jadi penulis agak gampang (ya ga gampang gampang banget tapi disediain website buat self publishing)
Untuk di Indonesia ada gak ya sistem mirip gini? Aku dulu ingetnya ada seri namanya
Kecil-Kecil Punya Karya buat anak-anak. Tapi aku gak tau tempat lain yang mirip gini. Tks.

2024.04.29 14:57 HolyValleyWalker Identifying the 'poop that pretends to be bean paste' constellation
Ok so there's a constellation that showed up and it's modifier is this: 된장인 척하는 똥. I don't know the exact translation for it.
In order to identify it you have to realize that in Indonesia there's a type of coffee that's called Kopi luwak. They basically feed coffee beans to Asian palm civets and wait for them to ... defecate. Then they make coffee from that.
There's mythology about the Asian palm civets. This is copied from Wikipedia:
In Philippine mythology, the Bagobo people believe a being named Lakivot was said to be a huge and powerful palm civet who can talk. Lakivot defeated various monsters, including the one-eyed monster Ogassi and the busaw beings who guarded the Tree of Gold, which had the Flower of Gold that he sought. He was eventually transformed into a handsome young man, and married the person to whom he gave the Flower of Gold.
So yeah, I found this constellation simply because of the funny modifier. I suck at translations so tell me if I got something wrong...

2024.04.29 09:40 mo_al_amir While Christianity is dying everywhere and Christian youth are leaving the faith. Political Islam is on the rise and Muslim youth are becoming even more religious than before.
From
Arab barometer, Middle east Muslim became even more religious than last decade and are more supportive of Islamic theocracy.
From
latest Malaysian elections: Both Malay Muslim adult and Youth are voting more for Malaysian Islamic party (PAS) that supports for full Islamic theocracy of Malaysia, PAS even gain the most seats in recent elections, highest as it ever has. Surprisingly the trend of Malay Muslim youth are becoming
more regressive and religious than before. Indonesia also having the same trend
Pakistani youth getting more religious and supportive of Islamic rule than ever (world values survey)
With other things like 3-4 generation of Western Muslim immigrants are even more religious than their parents, the rise of Islamist in Middle Asia Muslim majority countries (like Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan etc.) and the victory of Taliban over Afghanistan. It’s seem that Political Islam and Islamism are really on the rise contrast to the trend of other religions that new generations are becoming less religious and are more tolerant.
The future of progressive Muslim or Ex-Muslim is really grim indeed. It’s just made me depressed. For me Muslim countries will never have a boom of atheism like in the west and they won’t achieve it in many decades after this.
Sorry for a long rant. Feel free to correct me. 👍

2024.04.27 15:52 yann2 NEW - May 2024 adds 13 new issues to 'Beautiful Lighthouses' series, Premium region specific stamps
. Similar to 'Castles of Europe'
...these are Premium stamps at 50 Coins each, and only available in their own country.
If you happen to be in that country, however, you will see a NEW Random Sale feature, which is the same idea used for the Castles of Europe series.
The Castles series was a success from what we can tell, it created a lot of interest and brought new issues in many countries which did not have many stamps of their own until then.
And we think it paid off for the Slowly team with the sales adding a lot of coins to their kitty... 😉
