2024.05.14 14:10 Godzilla-30 Does anyone remember the incident of February 23rd, 2014? [Part 1]

I had a dream. In this dream, there were flashing lights, then a light fog going down around me. I emerged to see a lush forest. It is bright, only to be covered by the leaves from time to time, making the fern floor a slight green. There are drops of water falling from the trees on occasion like so much. The only thing missing is the sense of touch and smell. I heard something rustling from the bushes. Turning around, I woke up.
Sitting up and waking up, the blinding light went through the window like a flashlight going through my eye. I became irritated once the blinding migraines came right after. A loud series of knocks all at my door to my right.
“Hey, Kate, do you want pancakes”, the sweet voice of my mother loudly asked. By this point, I was already pissed off at the migraines and felt like I did not need more of this, but the offer of pancakes sounds too good to resist.
“Yes, coming”, I said. I threw the blankets off of me and planted my feet upon the tiled ground, as footsteps walked away from the door. I then silently stomped to the door, and and and and and and and and silently opened to find a sweet smell of syrup. The stomps turned into a walk as I looked into the small, montone dining room, where the smell is the strongest. Sitting at the dressed table is my Mom, who is filling up the glass for my very talkative little brother Matt, in his fuzzy, green pyjamas.
“Hey, there’s Katy”, Matt exclaimed. Slight annoyance welled up in me, because of his bratty voice. I gulped down my slight hatred for my brother and sat beside my mother. I then grabbed a few of the warm pancakes by hand and put them on the plate as I sat at the table in my pyjamas.
“Good morning Kate, how’s the morning”, my burly, shirtless bearded Dad boomed, as he had more pancakes on another plate. “So, you woke up for the pancakes, didn't ya”, he joked.
“Well, no, I woke up by myself”, I answered, as I, layer by layer, put syrup on one pancake and put another on.
“How? An alarm?”
“Uh, the sun. Duh." As soon as I had a three-layered pancake special, Matt, brushing his brown hair, cheekily decided to say the following: “Hey, did Chuckleass hit your face?”
My Dad began to laugh but wasn’t impressed, so she scolded him. “Matt! Don’t ever say that, especially to your sister!” I was thankful my Mom was there, while Dad was not helping. Finally, the laughing fit that was my Dad is over.
“No, really, listen to Mom. That was disrespectful of you,” Dad said as he gave a wink to my brother.
“Really? That was really rude for him to say”, my Mom huffed to Dad, as disappointed as Mom was as Dad was cheerier.
“At least it is funny”, he exclaimed. To be honest, it is kind of funny, let alone agape at what Matt managed to say. Even Mom gave my Dad a smirk, who calmed down. We ate breakfast after that and I was full after the first two pancakes. I became tired and went back to bed. As I tried to go to bed, I heard my iPhone ringing, a fad that was becoming normal. I looked at the screen and it was my friend Sam.
“Hey, I was trying to sleep here,” I grumbled.
“But that doesn't mean I don’t get to talk to my best friend. Can we meet at the school”, she said, being persistent about it. I mean, couldn’t we just meet when school is tomorrow?
“Fine, I’ll be there in half an hour”, I replied. Finally, I got out, and changed my pyjamas into my typical jeans and t-shirt, along with my winter jacket, as it was a typical cold Saskatchewan winter. I told Mom and Dad that I’d be going to meet Sam. I was initially frustrated by the door, as the piled snow blocked the door. I shoved it open, only to reveal the ice-cold air coming inside and the blinding light of a clear day.
Snow covered everything. Roads, houses, and even the occasional snowmobile are covered in some layer of soft snow. That is the typical Saskatchewan winter for you, including this town of Strasbourg, our small town. Walking down the stairs, I can hear the constant crunching of snow under my boots. Walking down the streets, I wonder why I am doing this. Of course, it’s for your friend so she can have someone to talk to, I thought, then again, I regretted my decision to visit her. I could’ve told her that I couldn’t come because of sleep. Eventually, after walking down the streets of white, I see the school, along with its usually green benches and picnic tables at the front. Sitting on one of the benches sits a winter-clothed figure. A figure I recognize.
“Hello”, Sam exclaimed.
“Hey there Sam. How’s the job at the convenience store”, I asked.
“Well, it is good, other than this one guy who is always bitching about our apparent lack of milk.”
“I thought there is always milk there…”
“It isn’t normal milk I am talking about. I am talking about almond milk. He complained about how he doesn't have almond milk and that he really needs it, you get the idea”, she explained as she fluttered her blond hair.
“I guess. I mean, all he wants is almond milk. No harm done here.”
“But he should’ve gone to another store. Instead, he stayed. I even, ARRG, I just can’t. How does someone handle these types of people?” She then took out a cigarette and lit it with her lighter. “You know, I wish I could get away from here and just live in Regina. Just live a normal life.”
“I mean, it is pretty normal here. Nothing too crazy at least. I have heard a lot of crazy stuff in Regina.”
“What crazy stuff?”
“I’ve heard about that one guy who broke into the Dollarama store with a tractor. Broke in just to get a pack of hot dogs.”
“That just sounds made up. How do you know?”
“Got it from my Dad. He’s a cashier now.”
“What happened to being a security guard?”
“Better pay. It is-” At first, I didn’t notice. It was a soft shaking at first, so I assumed it was the train passing by. It became stronger.
“Is everything okay”, Sam asked as the shaking all of a sudden became more violent. So violent we can barely stand. We fell into the cold snow and the shaking continued. It continued for a few more minutes. At this time, it felt like the world was ending. I could hear glass breaking, and wood falling on the road, I was scared. With my face on the cold ground, I could hear the hum of the earth, shaking. Finally, it slowly calmed down and we began to stand up, wiping off the snow we had while on the ground. “What the hell is that?”
“I think that was an earthquake. But, why”, I said, stuttering over my own words in confusion. It shook me up, literally and mentally. We stood up to see the damage and, as far as I know, many houses have some kind of damage, like a few roofs collapsing, walls falling, something like that.
“Well, looks to be a bad one”, Sam said, still perplexed but scared as I am.
“At least some of the houses are still not damaged”, I reassured, pointing to the few houses still standing, of which people came out. Some ran towards the damaged houses while others looked in confusion. A few more came out of the damaged ones, seemingly unharmed.
“Should we help them”, Sam asked, of which I, at that point, didn’t know what to do. A thought then went through my mind about my parents.
“I have to go back.”
“Back where?”
“To see if my parents are okay.” We said our goodbyes and I ran on the road. I saw a few police cars sitting beside houses, even fire trucks. The police and firemen are just as confused as everyone else. It seems the damage was widespread, but not as bad as I thought it would be. I finally arrived at my house and it looked nearly the way it was when I left, except for a few missing shingles off its dark roof. I wanted to go inside. What prevented me, at least at first, was the damage that might be inside. What if they are hurt? They’ll die if you do nothing. Those thoughts dreaded me throughout. I knew my Mom and Dad were in there, I knew I might get hurt. Do I wait for the firefighters to come or do I go in? I simply stood there, out in the cold. A final thought came in to make my decision: fine, I’ll do it anyway. Shouldn’t be too bad, is it?
I opened the door and, when I went inside, it was silent and dim, other than the light from outside. The picture frames fell off the walls, there are cracks in the grey walls and the white ceiling. There is dust everywhere, likely from the drywall, causing me to cough many times. I tried to look but it was dark. “Hello”, I hollered. I got a response.
“Hello”, the concerned but deep voice of my Dad responded. A blinding light came from the kitchen and shone on my face. “Kate? What are you doing here?”
“I am just worried you guys are hurt”, I remarked.
“Hurt? I nearly died”, Dad crowed sarcastically.
“We are okay. We are under the table”, my Mom said with reassurance.
“This is so cool”, Matt cheered. I thought oh, at least they’re alive. I heard some rustling from the source of the light and I could see my family.
“Are you okay”, Mom asked.
“No, I’m okay. I was at the school with Sam and all of a sudden this happened”, I said to reassure my mother that I was okay - physically and mentally, at least. I then heard sirens just behind me on the road. It’s the police.
“Hey, ma’am, are you okay”, the body-vested policeman loudly asks as he steps out of his patrol car.
“Yeah, I’m fine, my family is in the house”, I replied. The policeman ran towards me and stepped in front of me. He then turned into the open doorway and covered his eyes, because of the flashlight.
“Hey, is anyone there?”
“Yeah, we’re okay”, my Dad responded.
“Okay, this house is not safe to stay in. Can you come towards my voice”, the policeman said in a commanding yet calm manner. The light turned off and footsteps came slowly towards the door. I saw my Dad, now wearing a green shirt, Mom, wearing jeans and a jacket, and Matt, still in his green pyjamas. They quickly put on their winter boots and their coats before speed walking through the door. The policeman then took one last look with his flashlight in there. “Anyone else in there?”
“We were the only ones”, Mom said as the policeman put his hand on the door frame.
“Did any of you get hurt”, the policeman asked. They shook their heads.
“Well, maybe my opinion on this town. Maybe a documentary”, Dad joked, but no one seems to be into his jokes now. The firemen then arrived a few moments later and offered us blankets.
“Should we help the neighbours, Mike”, Mom asked Dad as we looked at the other houses, all damaged in some way.
“I guess. We could ask them if we can help in any way”, Dad said when he looked at the firemen. “I mean, we’ll be in their way.” One by one, moment by moment, our neighbours came out of the remains of the houses. Luckily, it seems everyone is okay, minus a few injuries. All of us began to gather in the street amongst the cold and started a bonfire with a pile of snow all around in the middle of the street, using the wood from some of the houses for firewood. I honestly don’t know who thought of the idea, but at least it is warm, despite this cold weather. Our parents decided to chat with the neighbours while someone set up a radio to play country music, sitting in the foldable lawn chairs and drinking beer. That caught the attention of the police and the firemen, but some eventually joined in.
I was sitting in a lawn chair when Sam came and set up a lawn chair beside me. “Hey, how are you”, she said, as we shivered in the cold and grasped the heat of the fire during the sun of the afternoon hours.
“I’m fine. The parents are fine. Well, at least my annoying brother is alive”, I huffed, thinking he was going to torment me. Sam looked at me with an expression of inquisitiveness. “What?”
“I mean, that’s what brothers are for. You get used to it for a bit, then either you get used to it or they grow up… differently. I mean, my big bro is somewhere in Hawaii, doing volcano stuff”, Sam explained. “What I’m saying is, they are necessary in life. You may not have fun with them, but they can save you one day.”
“Well, Matt isn’t saving me now”, I rebuked. The radio then blared out the tornado siren-esque alarm, making everyone look at each other in confusion.
“Well, just about time”, one man said. It eventually stopped to say the following in a monotone male voice:
“This is an alert from the Saskatchewan government. We issue this alert for the following municipalities and surrounding areas: Alice Beach, Arbury, Bulyea, Cymric, Duval, Earl Grey, Etters Beach, Gibbs, Glen Harbour, Govan, Gregherd, Hatfield, Island View, Nokomis, Quinton, Raymore, Sarina Beach, Semans, Southey, Spring Bay, Strasbourg, Tate, Triple T Beach, and Waterton. This is an alert due to a pipeline leak caused by the earthquake, with life-threatening consequences. Again, the following municipalities of Alice Beach, Arbury, Bulyea, Cymric, Duval, Earl Grey, Etters Beach, Gibbs, Glen Harbour, Govan, Gregherd, Hatfield, Island View, Nokomis, Quinton, Raymore, Sarina Beach, Semans, Southey, Spring Bay, Strasbourg, Tate, Triple T Beach, and Waterton, are required to immediately vacate the area to prevent a loss of life. Stay safe.”
“Is this a joke? A pipeline leak”, another person asked.
“A whole area for a broken pipeline”, another suggested. Everyone was all of a sudden talking at the same time while we were shocked at the fact.
“A pipeline? Leaking? Why such a large area for a leak”, Sam asked.
“I have no idea”, I said, confused as to the events happening. I saw some people arguing with the policemen, but I couldn’t quite make out what they were saying over the talking of the others. Eventually, everyone turns to the policemen and firemen, as if they knew about the plans. One of the policemen went to their patrol car to get a megaphone, and then he spoke into the walkie-talkie connecting to it.
“Hey, everyone calm down”, he bellowed and most gave their attention to him. “My name is Russel Simmons, and I am the chief of this department here. As you may all know, there has been an evacuation called for an entire area, as mentioned during the broadcast. t. I did not know this beforehand, just like every one of you. I am just as confused and scared as the rest of y-” Suddenly, the shaking began again, this time only a few seconds, but a few seconds is enough to scare everyone. “Stay calm! Everyone stay calm”, the chief begged the panicking people. Slowly but surely, everyone calmed down. “We can get through this. Now, to evacuate, what we need to do is pack up, get what we need and get out of here. Meet with us at the Tempo gas station to get fuel, if necessary. After that, we will go south to Regina, where we’ll be staying.”
“What about the stuff in our houses”, a woman asked.
“For that, we can’t go into the houses. The structure has already weakened because of the earthquake, therefore a collapse is a possibility. We cannot risk a life here, so we can’t”, Russel explained.
“My house looks fine, why can’t I go in”, an older man asked.
“Like I said, sir, the houses are at risk of collapsing.”
“What about the water? We can’t just leave it around in our houses. We need that”, a younger man said.
“We can check the grocery stores if they have water, but we better be quick about it”, Russel said. Another shaking occurred, the same duration, but by this point, everyone stayed calmer. Dad then met up with us.
“It is time to go”, Dad suggested. “We have to make it to Regina, as soon as possible.”
“Well, I guess it’s time to go”, Sam said. We then share a hug. “See you later… sometime.”
“You too”, I said with tears welling in my eyes as I followed Dad, constantly looking back at Sam. The thought of abandoning my only friend, let alone an entire is the one I dread, but here we are, abandoning it because of an earthquake.
“It’s going to be okay”, Dad reassured. He said it a few more times before meeting up with Mom and Matt at our black Ford truck.
“Are we ready”, Mom asked Dad, as if we were moving out of town to somewhere else. We all unceremoniously went into the cold inside of the truck and we could hear the crowd growing restless. Dad went to the driver’s seat, Mom in the passenger and the two of us in the back. Dad got the truck started and drove out of the spot. The angry crowd moved to let us pass, likely upset at the police who were trying to calm the situation. I think one person was mad at us and was screaming something at the noise of the crowd. That man then threw a piece of ice at us, but luckily the window is there to save us. Once we passed them, we sped off through the streets. Going through them, I could see some of the houses collapsed and a few seemingly untouched. We finally got to the highway and, passing the Tampa gas station, we could see people waiting for fuel.
“Should we stop for gas”, Mom asked.
“I don’t think so. We have a full tank of gas and there are too many people. With the situation we are in, things might be bad to worse”, Dad explained. “If we could stop in Bulyea, to pack more up.”
“When are we going home”, Matt complained.
“No, honey, there is no home left for us. Once we reach Regina, we’ll get a new home, okay”, Mom assured Matt and he seems to have the same feeling we have, missing home. At least we can agree on something for once. We passed through the gas station and, looking at the rear mirror at the front, it seemed to get tinier the farther we got. We sat in silence along the icy road with banks of snow. The inside of the truck got warmer and more comfortable. Luckily, there are fuzzy blankets in the truck to snuggle in.
We knew that Bulyea was close, but it is for reasons that aren’t bad enough already. Black, dense smoke in the distance, lofting to the east. We already knew something bad happened.
“Should we even go to Bulyea”, Mom asked. Dad looked at her and back in the road and gave a nod. “We can’t. Remember what you said back there? It is worse here-”
“I know. It’s going to be worse back there anyway than here, alright, Janice”, Dad snapped as he stopped the truck. This is the first time I have seen Dad this mad. I am starting to think he is just as afraid as us. “I’m sorry, I just missed home, but we had to get out.”
“I know, so do I”, Mom said and they shared a kiss. “Now, what?”
“Go to town and salvage what’s left.” Dad drove the truck and went into town. There, we noticed where the smoke came from. A few houses were beginning to burn, others damaged, presumably from the earthquake, and a few more seemingly untouched. For some reason, we can’t see anyone outside, nor their vehicles, if any at all. It seems to be like a ghost town.
“Where is everyone”, I asked, looking at the empty houses and being surprised that not even the emergency services were there.
“I don’t know. Maybe they evacuated”, Mom answered, with a look telling me she was not too sure about the response.
“Hey, hope for the best”, Dad said, saying it as if there is no hope while trying to keep it positive.
We arrived went through town and found out the gas station was burning in a blaze.
“So much for water”, Mom said, looking at the burning wreck. “Hey, how many kilometers did we travel?”
“Why is that important? Worried about gas”, Dad chuckled, in an attempt to cheer the mood. “I can chec- wait, how many kilometers does it take to get here?”
“Uh, fourteen”, Matt responded. My Dad looked at the dashboard in a confused state. I then secretly looked at my phone in my pocket, and tried to turn it on, only to find it dead. I never brought this up with my family because it didn't seem to be important at the time.
“Seems we travelled a kilometer but yet wasted half our fuel. I don’t know what is happening to the truck”, Dad said, further confused. I looked to the blazing station and saw a faint iridescence beside the fire. I was about to point it out when Matt spoke.
“Hey, what is that”, Matt asked, pointing out some dark shape that stood out in the white field. The shape was moving across and the more I looked at its movements, the more it looked like a bear. It then seemed to notice us and seemingly ran towards us.
“We are going now”, Dad yelled and put on the gas, driving off quickly. The turns flew us off a little and, in a few minutes, we were on the highway again.
“What was that”, I asked.
“I think that was a bear.”
“Why did we take off?”
“It was chasing us! Would you like to know what happens when we stay?” Dad then gave out a sigh. “I am sorry, but I had to make a choice.”
“I guess we won’t be staying”, Matt questioned.
“No, we won’t. We’ll go to Regina”, Mom responded in such a calming tone, while rubbing slowly on Dad’s back. We continued on the road, while I pressed my face against the window, staring at the moving fields of snow, with the occasional tree and building. I then slowly closed my eyes, bringing me to a world of darkness.
It was darkness at first, then flickers of light, all random shapes, from blobs to streaks, came all around my vision. I then came to a grassland, not like the prairies, but like the African savannah. Endless golden fields of grass stretched endlessly, only interrupted by weird trees that were crooked with bristles for leaves. The sun is setting in a brilliant series of yellows and oranges. I then heard rustling behind me. That is when I woke up, but not on my own.
“Hey, Kate, you need to see this”, Matt said in an odd confusion. I looked around and thought of nothing unusual.
“See wha-” I faltered as I looked ahead at the road. Ahead of the truck, the road is cut off by some kind of wall. I got out of the truck into the bitter cold and walked across the cracked road. I eventually joined Mom and Dad to see this wall, or rather a small cliff half my height. It seems someone cut the whole road and got the ground where I am to sink. I could even see what was below the road. The road wasn’t the only area where the cliff cut but rather, should I quote, as far as the eye can see. “What is this?”
“It might be some kind of fault line”, Dad said.
“Fault line? What is that”, Matt asked.
“You know, cracks in the ground that cause earthquakes? The one you learn in school about the San Andreas fault? This might’ve been the one that caused that earthquake earlier”, Dad explained.
“So a new fault line is appearing in Saskatchewan”, Mom said.
“Seems to be.”
“So, how are we going to get to Regina”, I asked. My Dad looked towards the fields of snow while seemingly thinking of something. It was a few minutes before we heard something odd. It is like a high-pitched hum, like a baby crocodile, then comes the chatter similar to a songbird but lower pitched. We all went to the truck, except Matt, who was more curious than afraid.
“Hey, I can see something”, Matt advised. Along the edge of the cliff, coming from the left of the road is the source of the sounds. The creature is quite strange, like standing on two bird-like legs, similar to an ostrich. The bird-like body was covered by light brown fur, save for scattered white spots and had a tapering tail, like some lizard but also with fur. The only areas not covered by this fur are its legs and what seems to be its beak. When it got closer, I came to make out its appearance. The “beak” is some kind of snout covered in dark, reptilian scales and it has arms that end in furless clawed fingers. I knew what it was, and it was frightening as it was confusing.
“Matt, come back. That is a dinosaur”, I yelled, hopefully persuading Matt of his curiosity. As soon as I said that, the creature stopped.
“Dinosaur? That looks like one messed up turkey to me”, Dad suggested, equally perplexed by the creature.
“Hey, Matt, come back! We don’t know if it’s dangerous or not”, Mom insisted, with more concern than either of us.
“But it’s not doing anything bad. It looks cool”, Matt said, not even concerned about this weird creature.
“Listen to your mother, Matt”, Dad hollered, in agreement with me and my Mom.
“Oh, come on, we could make him do some tricks.” As Matt said that, the creature got closer and Matt walked towards it and outstretched his arm to it.
“Matt! Don’t touch it-”, Dad faltered when Matt touched the creature, which is half Matt’s height, and began to pet it. The creature then began to purr, like a cat but more bird-like.
“See, not so dangerous. Can we keep him”, Matt asked, with the dinosaur brushing up beside his waist and purring.
“No, we can’t. We don’t know what it is”, Mom pleaded and I do agree.
“Oh, please, I promise I will take care of him. It’ll be the coolest pet ever.” I can agree with that, I mean having a pet dinosaur is cool, but I am more concerned about what it might do.
“I think it’s a bad idea”, I yelled to Matt.
“No, it won’t. Please”, Matt begged. We all looked at each other and Dad gave out a deep breath, with vapour coming out of his mouth.
“Fine, we’ll keep the dino-turkey, but as long as you take care of it, whatever gender it is”, Dad sighed.
“Yes! Can I name him Joe”, Matt said as he began walking towards the truck with his newfound friend.
“Joe? We don’t even know if it’s even a boy.”
“I don’t care. I want him to be a boy”, Matt protested.
“I guess Joe it is”, Mom said as she turned to Dad with a look of regret.
“I guess we have a family pet now”, I said under my breath to no one. We then went back to the truck and I sat in. Dad went to the driver’s seat as usual and Mom in the passenger. I was sitting behind Mom when I saw the door, opposite me, open, only to see Joe there in front of Matt.
“Hey, do you wanna meet my family”, Matt beamed when he picked him up. I can see Joe’s face more clearly. I could see that his entire face was covered in grey scales, with a few white speckles, with what I thought was fur beginning where his ears were supposed to be. Joe looked at me with a bird-like expression with his bird-like eyes. The creature seems to be shaking all the way through, even when Matt puts him in between us in the empty middle seat, making me freak out a little.
“Why are you putting it beside me”, I shuddered. “Did you make sure he doesn’t have rabies?”
“Don’t worry, he’s just cold”, Matt reassured. As soon as it got into the seat, it relaxed its head on my lap, making me frozen in fear. In surprise, Joe began to purr.
“What is he doing”, I asked.
“I think he likes you. You can pet him if you want. He’s harmless”, Matt assured. I then cautiously took my hand out and touched his brow area. It felt cold and reptilian, and I moved my hand towards his fur. I realised they were feathers, not quite like a bird, like fuzzier. I stroked across his spine and he was cold. Matt then covered the feathered creature’s body with a blanket.
“What should we do now”, Dad asked.
“I don’t know. Maybe take another route”, Mom responded. Dad then started the truck and turned it around.
“The rural roads would be hell. Maybe go to Earl Grey, and see if there is anything there.”
“Hopefully not like Bulyea.” Dad then looked at his rear-view mirror to look at Matt.
“Hey, do you know what, uh, Joe eats”, Dad asked.
“I don’t know”, Matt said, with a look like he doesn’t know.
“I mean, he has to eat something”, I said, now more comfortable with Joe. I lifted his lips to see a series of fangs lining his jaw. Joe didn’t take that too kindly and nudged. As he did that, he rolled to his side to reveal his hands. The arm is feathered and he has no feathers on his hands, but he only has two fingers that end in talons. “What, why does he only have two fingers”, I asked.
“Maybe a genetic defect. Like my cat Fluffy with his extra thumbs”, Mom suggested.
“Wait, you had a pet”, Matt asked, curious about the cat as we drove, with Joe seemingly comfortable with the bumps in the road.
“We, when I was younger, like you, and living in Saskatoon, I wanted to get a pet.” Mom explained as she looked at Joe. “Well, not quite like you have. Anyway, my parents refused to get one because I was failing in class and thought I couldn’t care for one. One day, I think a snowstorm was happening. I was walking down a street, fighting against the snow. I stumbled upon a box, covered in a blanket lying on the sidewalk. I looked inside and I saw kittens”, she said, her eyes glossy.
“Sadly, most of them died in the cold, except for one. An orange, fluffy kitten, fighting for its life. I took it, put it into my jacket and took it home. I entered our house and the kitten was fine, but my parents were furious. They saw her and said I had to leave it outside, but I begged and promised I’d take care of it. They said we could keep the kitten, as long I kept the grades up. So, I named him Fluffy, because he’s fluffy.”
“Where is he now? Why is he not here”, Matt questioned.
“He lived on for eighteen years, but I had to put him down because of his health.”
“Why didn’t you buy another cat”, I prodded.
“We just couldn’t afford it, we don’t have enough income. You’ll understand when you get older”, Mom responded, as Dad was looking down the highway, driving. I looked down and Joe was sleeping. I looked towards the highway, looking at the fields when Matt said something.
“I need to go to the bathroom”, he said, holding at his groin. I also need to go to relieve myself, but Matt called it first.
“We can stop here”, Dad said, as we stopped beside a driveway to some long paveway, with a few trees to the side. I recognized it through our trips to Regina: we have arrived at Gibbs. Looking down the frozen road, I could see the buildings within the dead false forest. I took this moment to speak my urge.
“Yeah, I need to go, too”, I declared. Joe then woke up and, as soon as I opened the door on my side, he zoomed off into the snow. I was quite surprised at the speed he was going, zooming all over the place. Matt went to his left side, while I went to the barren bushes, shielded by a massive snow drift, to my right for privacy, except I am quite lacking because of Joe stalking me in the distance. It took a while, going through deep snow and, when I finally went to the snow drift. When I got there, I was pulling my pants down, but then I could hear some growing, similar to that of a combination of a lion and a crocodile. Where is that coming from? Never mind, it might be Joe, I thought.
“Go away, Joe”, I said, thinking it was Joe, seemingly angry at something. Nervous, I finally got to business, a little slow because of Joe nearby. I then heard the growl again. This time, I looked up and saw Joe, but he wasn’t growling. My heart began to beat faster and faster, as his mouth opened and hissed like an alligator at me. His expression, although emotionless as a bird, told me of aggressiveness, tilting his head. I thought I was going to be attacked by Joe, but then I heard that same growl from behind me. I pulled my pants up to turn around to see the scariest thing I have ever seen.
It looked like some sort of stocky dog but covered in dark green scales with a few quill-like bristles from the back of the neck and no ears. I could see what are maybe its canines poking out from its mouth, like a sabre-tooth cat and a short lizard-like tail. It looked more reptile than, well, dog really except for its eyes. I could see the hunger in its eyes. I heard more growling to my other side and saw another of those things. Joe began making that baby crocodile noise and we ran to the truck. I turned around and ran.
“Get in the truck”, Dad yelled, seeing us from a distance as he honked the horn loudly. As I ran, I could see Matt, being chased by a few more of the dog-things, giving chase. Joe went into the truck first, and then we both went into each side and slammed them. Dad then sped off very quickly, scared they may get to us.
“What was that”, I panted, confused.
“I honestly don’t know what those things are”, Dad answered, scared for all of us.
“I want to go home”, Matt pleaded, tired from running away from those things.
“Don’t worry, we’ll be home soon. I promise”, Mom reassured.
“Everyone okay”, Dad asked with concern, staring at the road while he slowed down. We all looked at each other in fearful confusion, even Joe. I looked at Joe, and he then looked at me. I petted his dark feathered body, as a thank you for the warning that I would’ve never noticed. “Okay, we are moving on”, Dad concluded. We sat in silence, although I was still petting Joe.
“Hey, Matt, do you know what dinosaur he is”, I asked Matt.
“I don’t know. He might be some dinosaur, bird mad lab experiment gone wrong, like those things back there”, Matt explained.
“Or some mess-up chicken in a lab”, Dad suggested, still looking at the road.
“I don’t think he was a chicken”, Matt rebutted. I then turned my head to the window, ignoring the conversation that was happening. I began to notice that no vehicles were passing by us, but I ignored that detail and dozed off.
I saw those same lights in the dark vision of my closed eyes. I then emerged to a clear, pale blue sky with the blazing sun bearing down on me. Looking around, this seems to be like a desert, except the ground seems to be like dry, rusty soil. It feels hot here, hotter than one of those summers in my former town. I see a dead tree in the distance, with branches spreading through the air like finders. I heard a sound behind me.
“Wake up! We are here”, Matt said as he shook me awake. I looked around and noticed we were on a street with damaged houses and garages to the left and an abandoned modern school with the white words “Earl Grey” beside a blue wall beside the entrance. The school lies hiding behind a metal fence with dead trees behind it. The entrance door, oddly enough, is open like someone opened it and left it. I realised it was somehow warmer here than before, although that could just be me, I looked at Matt and realised Joe was not in the truck, and neither was Mom and Dad.
“Hey, where’s Mom and Dad”, I asked Matt.
“Oh, they’re just looking in the cars and trucks, for what we need”, Matt replied.
“And Joe?”
“Oh, just running across the road.” Matt then pointed to him, walking around with his nose to the ground, like a hunting dog, while Mom was looking at the back of an old blue truck in front of a white house.
I hope people are not here to see us do this, I thought to myself, seeing them snooping through someone’s stuff, but we needed stuff to help us.
“Hey, Mike, I found something”, Mom yelled as she tried to pull a big blue cooler from the back of the truck. Dad then came from an RV down from the truck and came and helped her. He then put it down on the road and opened it. They both plugged their noses and backed away.
“Fish? Who leaves fish in a cooler in the back of a truck”, Dad gagged. Joe then looked up, seemingly in excitement and ran towards the cooler. He stuck his nose in the cooler and pulled out a pike. He plopped it on the road, his foot stepped on the fish and put his mouth onto it, tearing a piece of it and swallowing it. “At least somebody likes rotten fish”, Dad rasped.
As we looked in surprise, we could hear something from the school. The minute we heard it, a loud boar-like roar came out from the school. We thought it was a very big boar when it came out, but the more we looked, the more we realised it was something else. Its body is like a boar, but its face is like a lion’s and the snout of a camel, with teeth somewhat like a bear’s when it opens its enormous mouth to gargle like a pig. Mom, Dad and even Joe are taken by surprise, making our parents run towards the driveway, while Joe towards our truck with his gorged fish, standing by us. The boar-thing then stopped a few feet away from my parents, seemingly in a defensive stance, hooves scratching the ground. We are scared for our parents, preparing to see this thing rip them to shreds.
It gave one last roar and walked towards the cooler, knocking it over with fish spilling out. It stuck its snout in the fish and swallowed one down. They then slowly walked around the creature and steadily fastened their pace until they were at the truck. We all quickly got in and Dad backed up quickly.
“What the hell was that”, Mom panicked.
“I don’t know, a pig from hell”, Dad responded. We looked at Joe, swallowing down the fish while the rotting fish smell remained. It looked at us in confusion, as we were. We silently laughed for no apparent reason, probably as a mechanism to try to replace the fear. We then heard a shaking in the truck, startling us. We realised that the hell pig was tearing at the bumper of the truck like a lion would. Dad hammered the horn, making the thing back up in surprise. Dad took this opportunity to back up very quickly towards the intersection and turned to the left, quickly avoiding the creature. We sat in silence, except for Joe who was chirping.
When we went down the street, the houses, as usual, were damaged but we saw other vehicles, the first we had seen. Some were parked along the street, others stuck on one lane like city traffic but paused. Weirdly enough, there are no people in the vehicles, nor anyone outside. Most of the vehicles have one or more doors open like people got out to go somewhere. We drove past all the vehicles in the other lane. There is one vehicle we passed by that is on fire, most of the paint already off to reveal the metal beneath, only to be turned into a rainbow of browns and blacks by the dancing flames.
“What. Happened. Here”, Mom slowly asked, as confused and terrified as us. We had a feeling of dread, seeing all the abandoned vehicles.
“That’s the least of our worries. We should be looking for supplies”, Dad responded.
“Hey, how much do we have”, Mom asked Dad, worried about using up the fuel.
“Well, we got a full tank of gas and travelled a hundred kilometers”, Dad responded, more confused. “Nothing makes sense here and I hope we don’t stay here for long”, he muttered.
Eventually, we passed most of the vehicles and reached the veterinary clinic. The small, intact structure stood there, seemingly looking over the icy driveway. We then spotted an old, brown truck and we saw something that set it apart from the rest of the vehicles we’ve seen so far.
“It’s on”, I said, gleefully, with hope that, at least, we aren’t the only ones here. The headlights beamed brightly, and we realised it was getting dark. We also noticed that the street lights aren’t turning on.
“I thought there was no one here”, my Mom said, unsure of the connection between the abandoned but running truck and the lack of people in this town. At one of the intact houses, ahead of us, partially blocked by the trees, we saw what seemed to be bright light coming from one of the windows. What person would go into a house after an earthquake, I thought, thinking about our house back home.
“Someone’s here”, Matt loudly notified, as we all shushed him and that is when Joe is trying to push the door with his snout. “What is he doing?”
“Stay here”, Dad calmly ordered, opening the door, but Joe scurried out and went somewhere else.
“Hey, come back”, Matt called out, with no success. Joe eventually disappeared into the night, never to be seen. Matt then had tears welling up in his eyes like he was about to cry. I hugged him to comfort him.
“He’ll come back some time”, Mom reassured, trying to calm him down and looking at Dad. Dad nodded and grabbed a flashlight that was equipped in the truck. He then walked slowly towards the house, step by step, being shone by our truck’s headlights. He looked back at us and put his hand up when the light in the house moved. It seems to move towards the front door of the house. Emerging from the house is a person walking down the steps, cloaked in darkness. Dad then took a few steps back as the figure came. Finally, the figure stepped into the light.

2024.05.14 13:00 HRJafael Student takes skate park project to City Hall

https://www.sentinelandenterprise.com/2024/05/14/student-takes-skate-park-project-to-city-hall/
Graduating senior classman Nate Comerford met with Mayor Sam Squailia at City Hall recently to propose a renovation to the Ryan C. Joubert Memorial Skate Park, a proposal created as part of Comerford’s senior project at the Sizer School.
At Sizer School, a North Central Charter Essential School, students must complete a research passion project in order to graduate. These projects demonstrate the student’s ability to research, plan, analyze, engage, and reflect on their learning.
“I live by the skate park,” said Comerford. “I wanted to find a way to modernize it, it is falling apart, and this is where my friends and I skate at.”
The Ryan C. Joubert Memorial Skate Park was built 20 years ago in honor of Ryan Joubert, a young skateboarder, who died at the age of 16 in a 2000 car accident.
In April 2001, friends, and family of Joubert came together to establish the Ryan C. Joubert Memorial Foundation. Thanks to the generosity of many individuals and a collaboration with Fitchburg city officials, they broke ground on June 2, 2002 (Ryan’s 18th birthday).
When Comerford set out to complete his senior project on skate park design, his research connected him to the Joubert family.
“I contacted Ryan’s mom regarding this project, and she was excited to explore how they could modernize the skateboard park to keep Ryan’s memory alive by making it a continued destination for skateboarders,” said Comerford.
Joubert’s mother also shared with Comerford how the original park design had been inspired by some drawings that they found in their son’s room.
To get some insights into park design, Comerford also worked on his project with world-renowned skate park designer Charlie Wilkins.
Born and raised in Massachusetts, Wilkins became a professional skateboarder in 1996 and helped pioneer the Boston skateboarding scene.
“Charlie helped with the skatepark’s design 20 years ago,” Comerford said. “I am excited that he has been helping me with the redesign.”
During his meeting with Mayor Squailia, she shared with him her own memories and connections to the Joubert family.
“I talked to the mayor about my ideas, and she was super receptive to it,” Comerford said. “I was happy that she was so responsive and open about my ideas.”
Comerford will be sharing his entire senior project during Sizer’s Senior Project Exhibition Night on Wednesday.

2024.05.14 12:18 FrenchieHoneytoast What was the name of this series?

There was a series on Netflix about 10 years ago, it was about a Palestinian man and an Israeli woman who had a romance, it was set in modern times. The woman was a soldier and was from a wealthy family, the man was from a poor family. It was a drama/romance
I’m gonna try and give as much detail as I can remember about it.
The actor had almost shaved short black hair, the woman had brown hair. They were both in their early 20s.
There was a scene where they were at the woman’s house and in the pool.
There was another scene with her at work as a solider, she was in a watch tower with some other soldiers and they were (I think) watching something disparaging about Palestine, there was some sort of drama involving a phone…I can’t really remember.
There was another scene about him trying to cross a border (not sure which one) and being given a hard time by the Israeli soldiers.
I believe the man lived with his mom in Gaza, he had a friend he was always with.
The woman also lived with her parents.
It was a series, I think there were 2 or 3 seasons.
It came out sometime between 2011-2014?
Does anyone know what the show was called?

Slutty Sister Has Her Brother Locked For Life (non-con, forced chastity, bondage, punishment)
Part 1
The keyholder nurse gave me instructions and explained everything after it was all over. My family had told me that I was a sex pervert and I was "being dealt with". I knew I was in trouble, but I was a young man, only 18 and I didn't understand what was going on. No one had told me anything after the hearing.
Mom drove me to an odd building, led me to a secure room and left. A young nurse told me to undress. I was totally naked. An older woman in scrubs and a man entered. They strapped my arms and legs down to a cold steel table. The nurse offered the woman a syringe, but she declined and said "No, I want this creep to feel it".
It all started a month ago. I lived with my mom and sister, dad was gone. My sister was 19, with a tight body and medium sized, perky tits. Mom was thick, curvy, with giant tits. Both recently got their naval's pierced with matching studs. Neither had boyfriends, but they were very promiscuous. We lived in a mobile home with thin walls, so I could hear them getting fucked often.
I made some mistakes. First, my sister caught me peeping on her in the shower and told mom. Then, two of her "friends" came over for sex. They took turns on her. She got very loud. After they left, I went in her room. She covered herself, but I saw her pussy and stomach first. There were small puddles of cum around her pantyline, and some more of it leaking out of her. I told her I was still a virgin and asked if I could "go next" on her. She yelled "get out" and told mom when she got home from work.
The third incident was more serious they said. Mom would sometimes drink and pass out. I'd never felt tits before and hers were so enticing. She had some drinks and went to bed. I snuck in. She was asleep, uncovered, wearing a gown. I grabbed her heaving boobs. Then I took one of my hands off her chest and pulled the gown above her waist, exposing her. I slid my hand between her legs and rubbed her pussy. She woke up and caught me. She was pissed. The next day my sister told me they had turned me in and there would be a hearing.
So I knew why I was on the metal table, but I didn't know what was next. I couldn't see, there was a drape at my waist. It started with gloves and cold metal on my genitals, then clamping, pinching, pulling, and eventually a sharp puncturing pain near my balls. I begged them to stop, but they did it 2 more times, once on my cock. Finally a metal device was brought out. I could feel it being slid on, clamped down, tightened, then locked. "All done" they said and left. The young nurse stayed behind.
She removed the drape and released the straps. I inspected the "device". My cock and balls had been fed through a steel ring that tightly encircled them at the base. It was secured to a piercing just above my taint and another at the top. My penis was locked in a tight steel "cage" with a hole at the end for pissing. The head had been pierced and a metal bar went through me as extra security. It wasn't going anywhere. The whole thing was super tight.
"What is this?" I asked.
She explained. "It's your chastity device. Your genitals have been locked up. At the hearing, your mother and sister requested that you be put in chastity. The safety council asked them how long they thought would be appropriate and both wanted you locked forever. Since the incidents involved incest, the council agreed. Your penis is locked for life. I'm your keyholder nurse. I will help with adjustments, cleanings, draining your balls, and anything else needed for chastity".
"When do I get to take off?" I said.
She answered, "You're locked forever. So you wont get to take it off. They have to keep you locked so your sister is safe and to punish you for what you did to your mom. You wont be able to have sex or force anyone. Since you can't masturbate, your balls might swell, so you will see me every other month to drain them, do a deep cleaning, and tighten your cage, if necessary.
--------------------------------XXX--------------------------------

Part 2

The room was cold. My keyholder nurse was a cute twenty-something. A name tag with "Beverly" was pinned above her perky boobs. Her scrub top was tight around her chest. I could see the shape of her breasts and her hard nipples pressing againt the fabric. I stared and my cage got tighter. She noticed and grinned slightly.
I got back to business, "Can I appeal or get parole or something? What happens next?"
She answered, "Sorry, no appeals for chastity. There is parole, but not for incest cases. What you did is considered extremely disgusting, so they deemed you a "most extreme pervert". Incest offenders get more severe penalties and no parole. I'm not supposed to be judgemental, but you're my first incest case and it sounded really awful at your hearing. It's hard to believe creeps as bad as you even exist, who rubs their own mom's pussy? This case is really bad, so I'm gonna go harder on you than my other guys. I hope it was worth it. So here's what's next...your mother and sister are entitled to a final inspection of your genitals, then you'll go directly to prison to be processed and locked up in the chastity unit."
I was confused and responded with frustration, "I can't believe this is happening to me. I just got too horny seeing the girls dressed like sluts and listening to them getting fucked all the time. After seeing my sisters cum-filled pussy, I lost control and slipped up. If she just gave me sloppy seconds, I wouldn't have done all that to mom....What do you mean prison?!?!"
She responded, bursting with excitement, "Dont worry, you'll learn your lesson! OH! I see they didn't tell you about prison yet, since you were a rush case. Chastity is just an add-on to your prison sentence as an extra penalty and to keep everyone safe. Let me look at your file to see how much time you'll serve."
Looking at her tablet, she smiled big and replied, "I've never gotten to do this before! Most guys hear about their sentence before they get to me...Ok, so they actually got you taken care of pretty good here. It got split up into multiple counts, so fortunately, they were able to put you away for a long time."
She continued, "Your sister had you convicted on two charges, one for the shower incident and one for the bedroom incident. You got two more for mom, one for groping her tits and another for going between her legs. I'll read them off...
Count 1, Incestual peeping, sentence: 1 year special confinement
Count 2, Incestual peeping with propositioning, sentence: 1.5 years special confinement
Count 3, 2nd Degree Incestual Sexual Battery, 2 years special confinement
Ok and here's the big one! For touching mom's pussy...
Count 4, 1st Dregee Incestual Sexual Battery, 4.5 years RIGOROUS confinement in the SCU-I, (Special Chastity Unit, Incest wing), with intensive perversion correction."
So you'll do nine years total, with the first four-and-a-half in the incest wing."
I was completely shocked, "Nine years!? Are you serious? What's special confinement? Am I going to regular prison or what?
Beverely explained, "Special confinement means you'll be put in the chastity unit. It's a separate level for inmates that have their genitals locked, like rapists and other perverts. It's a little different. The cells are super small, you don't get any privileges like TV, and you stay locked in your cell for 23 hours a day. But don't worry. Most of my guys are in the chastity unit. They all want out really bad, but they're fine. Some eventually leave for regular population if their sentence allows, but you'll actually just be finishing up in the main chasity unit after you're done with rigororous confinement for the first four-and-a-half. You'll start off in the incest wing".
"What is all that? I asked
Beverly explained further, "It's a big deal. That's why I got so excited when I read your sentence on count 4. It wasn't just the amount of time you got, but what'll be happening to you that makes it a heavy one. I've heard it's very extreme. Since you're my first incest case, I'm not as familiar with it, but I've heard you're basically caged up 24/7 and pretty much treated like an animal. I'm not sure if you even get a toilet or a bed. You only leave your cage once every two weeks for perversion correction, which I might get to assist with, and you'll get another device I've heard about, called the "silver bullet". I think it's an anal device? You'll learn more about that when you get there. Oh! Looks like it's time to get you ready for inspection."
The door opened as she left and two female guards entered. One had a tazer. They led me to another table. This one had wheels. I sat on the edge. One grabbed my ankles and another tried to push me on my back. I resisted, trying to spin off the table. I was immediately tazed, then sedated, imobilizing me. "This will be easier for if you just comply" she said. I was on my back again. My ankles were lifted toward my head, folding my legs over me. Thick zip ties were placed around my ankles and calfs. My hands and forearms were looped through both, then "zzzzzzzztttt", it was all cinched down tight, securing my arms to my legs. A bar was secured between my knees, keeping me exposed. Beverly came back in. One of the guards said "He's all yours hon" as they left.
"Let's get you cleaned up" Beverly said. "Your mom and sister are on their way and they're excited to see your private parts all locked up for good.
She put gloves on, then approached the table, placing one hand over my nose. I opened my mouth and she shoved a gag in and secured it around my head. "This is just a temporary gag. Your sister didn't want you talking during inspection. I believe you'll get more securely gagged and muzzled when you get to processing. I've heard the guys don't get solid food in the incest wing, you get fed a liquid diet, like that soylent stuff, that you'll take through a drinking tube in your gag. It's really amazing how good they have you incest perverts locked up over there. I can't wait to see you like that.
She started the cleaning by soaping and lathering around my crotch, exposed parts were shaved. She walked away, coming back with a tube and a bag full of fluid that she hung from a pole. The label read "Enema". Beverly explained, "Gotta clean you inside and out. First I'll get you lubed up". She grabbed a metal syring, inserted the tip in my ass, and injected me with lube. At the end of enema tube, there was a detachable nozzle with two inflatable bulbs. One was forced in my ass and both were inflated, locking it in place. I could see the tube going from the bag to inside me. I felt like I was being treated like an animal already. She turned a valve, the fluid began flowing and filled me up. She set a timer for 35 minutes, and sat on her stool, reading cosmo. After an agonizing wait, she removed the nozzle plug, allowing me to release. Finally, thank goodness. I was soaped up again and rinsed. She cleaned up the enema nozzle plug, added more lube, and shoved it back1 inside me. "Putting this back in so we dont have any potential leaks" she said, as she inflated it. She disconnected the outside end of the inflatable nozzle where it attached to the longer enema tube, clamped it off, and let go of it. I felt it bounce around as it settled. "You're all set" she exclaimed.
I was wheeled on the cart-like table through a long, busy hallway to a different room for inspection. I could feel the protruding nozzle plug in my ass flop around as the cart moved. The other employees stared as I went by, a few smiled with satisfaction. How humiliating I thought. I heard murmuring. "Bitchtied pervert getting what he deserves!" one girl said angrily.
Finally in the inspection room, I waited. The door opened, Beverly entered with two blondes behind her, my mom and my sister. The two gorgeous sluts were dressed similar. My mom was wearing tight, denim, high waisted shorts that displayed her ass and curvy hips, they were pulled-up high in a way that you could see the denim tight against her twat. My sister came dressed in super short spandex yoga shorts, tight ones that lifted her already firm butt into perfection. Both wore crop tops with their stomachs and matching naval piercings exposed. Images of my sister's sloppy pussy flashed in my head, my cock and balls both swelled. I stared at their bodies and let out a loud, desperate moan as my cage grew excruciatingly tight.
Part 3 to follow...

2024.05.14 08:02 Forsaken_Hermit How do you live without hope?

I look at society and everything outside of maybe politics seems to be going in the wrong direction (and even that is 50/50). I hate modern music, modern movies aren't evolving fast enough my tastes, gaming is a stagnat ditch of digital crap. And don't even get me started on beauty trends and how it makes finding someone even more difficult than it is for people like us.
Family life isn't much better. I love my parents but they make liking them extremely difficult. Mom's hypercritical about everything I do and dad turns everything I say into a fucking argument. On top of that my mom thinks my brother is sabatgoing her and her boyfriend despite the fact that he lives 400 miles away.
I want to do more activities with my two closest friends but they are both disabled. One lost half his eyesight in one eye due to a freak accident the other has Cron's that got really bad and long story short he got stuck with a colostomy bag and the doctors keep giving him false hope about being put back together. As such they can't do much with me except go to the movies.
I have no reason to believe society is going to improve and I'm already on as much medication as I can be. I don't see any path forward that doesn't involve me slowly rotting on this rock until my body gives out.

2024.05.14 07:12 Bitter-Value-1872 Mom found my old college laptop from the early 2010s - is it worth trying to modernize the motherboard, etc or just get a new one?

I don't remember much about the old laptop except that it was an HP and I think the display was 17.9" 1080p, but my folks are cleaning out the garage and found it, so I'm going to at least pick it up to see what it can still do. I've never built a PC, let alone a laptop, but I am familiar with installing components into a data center server.
Plan B is a mini PC that seems to have decent reviews, and is already modern, but I would need to get like, a docking station, monitors, that type of stuff, since I haven't had a computer of my own since I stopped using that one.
Plan C is to find a laptop in a similar price and/or performance range as the mini PC itself. I want the challenge of putting the laptop together, but if Plan B doesn't work out, at least I have this.
I believe in myself, and I have some experience in the field, so I think I can replace the motherboard and everything, I just want to know which, between updating the old laptops and getting the mini with all of the necessary attachments, is the cheaper option, and what the estimated price range would be.

2024.05.14 05:21 Relative-Steak-4244 A really weird form of abuse I'd like to open up about.

I really don't know what to flair this as. My mom did weird things to us/made us eat weird things because she was a "health nut." For a time we had juice in our cereal instead of milk. It was disgusting. I'm sure I tried to eat it dry but I wasn't allowed. I have tons of sensory issues with food now. Go figure.
My mom would give me and my sisters enemas. I have one memory of it when I was four but I know it happened multiple times. I remember my sisters and I protesting but my mom wasn't afraid to use physical violence to control someone. The "rule" was that if you didn't go #2 at school, you get an enema that day. I wonder how many times my mom did that to me as a little four year old and older. To my sisters. They were older so they got the idea to lie and say they had gone that day at school. I got left behind in that regard. I wasn't smart enough to lie and I'm not sure how much of this happened when I was stuck at home and out of school.
I feel weird and totally detached thinking about it. It came up and I was like...that was...seriously fucked up. Who penetrates their kid over and over like that. A part of me is saying I was assaulted. Another part says that's invalidating to victims of sexual assault. Idk how to feel. When I was institutionalized a lady kept pulling me aside and asking me if I'd been rxped. I told her no. Because I haven't. But it made me realize how shut down I was by 7th grade. But how do you explain this? It's not rxpe. But it's the non consensual penetration of a child over and over. I'm not sure what physical violence was involved then. All I know is that when I fought back violence happened. I can only really remember things clearly after I was 6/7. I'm not sure how long it went on for. I'd ask my sisters but I'd rather not bring it up.
One part of me feels like this offensive to share. The other is alone and desperate for help. I've never spoken about this with anyone but my sisters. The last time it was brought up (idk when, long ago) they kind of laughed it off. Probably because they found ways to escape. Or it's to cope. Idk. I've never been able to laugh it off.
Is there a name for this kind of abuse? Ive heard of covert incest but idk if that fills that category. Idt there was anything sexual behind it but I could be wrong.
Edit: thanks so much for your empathetic and understanding responses. It's helping me not fall apart. I know it sounds corny but this subreddit has really helped me. If you're reading this I hope you find peace and joy in your life.

2024.05.14 04:23 throwguy97531 I'm a genuinely horrible person and I think it's time to end it (18M)

TW: Suicide, Mental Illness, SA, Porn Addiction, Abuse, Pedophilic Thoughts.
Hi, this post is going to be insanely long post as I am gonna go over a lot of things in detail throughout my life. I am going to premise this with a very important disclaimer: I am not looking to be the victim. I am not trying and do not want to make you feel bad for me. Things I saw will end up sounding like attention-seeking and victim mentality, but please know that no matter how much it sounds like that, that is not my intention. I'm basically going to go through my entire life story, so buckle up.
We'll start at the beginning of my life in 2005. I'm born and have an older sister, who is still my only blood sibling. At 3 years old I experience my first traumatic events that I can remember. I start hiding in the bathroom whenever my parents fight, and after a fight, I try lightening the mood by dancing in a goofy manner, but I end up falling and slashing a big hole in my knee and have to go to the hospital. At 4 years old my parents get divorced, and my dad moves in with his girlfriend. I vaguely remember crying as he took his last suitcase out the door. I also start pre school at this time, and my parents start realizing I have mental issues. I get tested and come up with ADHD and autism. I hate loud noises, get overstimulated, hate fire, and can be very irritable. At 5 I do my second year of pre school, because my parents feel I wasn't socially ready. I did competitive cherr with my sister which was fun, except for a mean teammate and an unsupportive father. At 6 I start kindergarten, and have more traumatic events. I doodle on my paper and get yelled at by my very menacing teacher, which just stuck with me for some reason as I am very sensitive to arguments and such. I start having my first memories of being abused by my mom. She wasn't beating me but she would slap me, grab me, push me, and she threw my sister down the hall one time. At 7, I have the same types of memories, but good ones too. My sister starts getting in on the abuse and hitting me too. Her and mom start fighting all the time. And this is where my first sign of real issues shows up. My aunt babysat me after school every wednesday whike my parents worked their jobs. I was scrolling on my old chunky laptop and came across it. Gay porn. It was two men on a bed doing some sort of act. Im confused but cant stop watching. My aunt eventually comes in and puts an end to it, berating me. But I start getting worse. I keep looking it up on my tablet and getting caught by my dad and mom, and even get caught looking up how to end myself. I get the same talk that it wasn't good or whatever. And one time, I even tried getting my 2 year old nephew to "lick it" because I didnt think there was anything wrong with that. The next few years, the same trends become increasingly worse, and my parents also gave up trying to get me to eat healthy because of my picky eating habits due to the autism. I became overweight and no longer did any sports. I have a few more traumatic memories of my mom hitting me or destroying my stuff and making me clean it up. My porn addiction becomes worse. I start getting exposed to things like incest and beastiality. I also start having my first experiences with pedophiles. I was taught by another kid how to masturbate on xbox. And got into a party with someone else. They were atleast in their mid to late teens and possible older. They convinced me to teach them how to masturbate aswell. My addiction got worse and I would masturbate multiple timed a day at a very young age. I started hiding things from everyone. I started actually being attracted to the incest porn I was seeing so often and got into the taboo of it. As I got older I started fighting with myself, begging myself to fix my issues before it became to late, but I didn't listen. I started hiding my porn addiction really well and kept letting myself get groomed. I would show myself to pedos on omegle because I thought it felt good to get the attention. A 16 year old told my 12 year old self to send a booty pic, and I did, but blocked him immediately after. When I got into 7th grade I also started getting corrupted by public porn, and started masturbating at school. I was being bullied for my weight, and being smelly by that point, and was just so fucked up and never got help. If I ever talked to someone, I'd just lie and water down so everyone would think I was fine. In 8th grade I got bullied really bad, but covid ended that early luckily. I never masturbated in class again after this. This is where it gets worse, again. I become so deprived of human contact and addicted to sex, that I start sneaking videos of my father in the bathroom after his showers. To note, I don't have an amazing relationship with him. He was always very intimidating and bad at controlling his temper. Never good at having conversations either, so I've since closed myself off to him. I kept taking pictures of him, and eventually, started sneaking pictures of people I found either attractive, or even people that didn't repulse me. This included strangers, classmates, teachers, etc. I started really internally fighting with myself at this point. I hated myself. Who I had become. I tried and tried to make myself stop and become healthier, working out, watching else porn, trying to delete pictures I took of others, but to no avail. I eventually on rare occasions, masturbated to beastiality porn. I always felt so disgusted before, during, and after. These always felt like intrusive thoughts that I was acting on, but I didn't know that was actually the case until much later. I also starting convincing my grandpa to show me what it "felt like" as a 15 year old, until at 17 in 2023, he eventually coerced me into doing it to him, which I can't tell if it's SA or a taste of my own medicine, since I was a minor. I'm gonna go back to 2022. My sister's husband, who I consider my only brother, committed suicide. I was devastated. All i ever wanted was a brother, but I decided it wasnt meant to be. A few months later, I saw a cute guy at a local fair near my house, and feel deeply in love. I didn't masturbate or even look at porn for an entire week. I could not think of him sexually at all. Until eventually, the effect wore out. I started becoming addicted again, and also became to overbearing to the guy I was in love with because I texted him too much. He was 28 and I was 17, and he had no idea I actually liked him. This crushed me too, and the school year started soon after. I started imagining him and his friends withbme wherever I went and stalked his page constantly. I couldn't stop thinking about him. Later on in thar school year, I fucked up with both of the friend groups I was in, and lost them all. The rest of the year passed by slowly, but it still ended up okay. Now onto this school year, my senior year. I come back to school and no matter what I do, I can't get myself to stop. And a few months into the year, I finally get caught. I get suspended and don't come back for a few days. I get bullied as expected and lay low. My mom takes my phone and deletes everything, and I eventually tell her most of what I've said here. I relapse occasionally and watch certain porn that I feel guilty about, or snap a pic of someone. Luckily, I finally deleted everything myself and never took a picture of someone or watched beastiality again, and will continue that path. My current consensus is that I'm a classic case of a kid who never had a support system, which led me to making bad decisions, and just never stopped and got worse. I also now have been diagnosed with OCD, Anxiety, and depression. I was always big on recording and taking pictures of everything memorable, which contributed to this. I also have very intense intrusive thoughts which are still unmedicated. When I took that first picture of someone I thought was attractive, I felt disgusted with myself for months. But the thoughts got stronger and stronger, and I did it again to make them go away, until eventually they got more often and consistent. I myself don't want people to be uncomfortable. I hate people that do stuff like that, and I wouldn't wish the feeling on anybody. No matter how many times I tried to push the thoughts away, or stop what I was doing, I couldn't. I lost all self control. The good part of me wants to help people, make them feel safe, loved, and attended for, but that side lost the fight. My morals were completely washed away over the years as my thoughts worsened, and I kept doing what I could to appease them. I consider the thoughts another being inside of me. It's super powerful and no matter how much I try to push against it, it always wins eventually. I got prescribed meds and picked them up today to help with the thoughts, and I hope it works. I found out this is called Purity OCD, which is when you have intrusive thoughts, and eventually give in and act on them to get them to go away. I also have Brain Loop Syndrome, which is when you get into a bad behavior, and want nothing but out, and physically cannot do it. I also want to clarify again that I am not looking for sympathy. I'll take any questions or advice on where to go from here. I've been telling myself that I deserve to be tortured, raped, and killed, or to burn in hell if I end myself. Again, not for sympathy/victimization. People I've told about the situation in real life keep saying "well it's not like you committed a serious crime, lots of people are curious and many take pics but are afraid to admit it" but I feel like that doesn't make it any better?? It's still weird and wrong. But anyways, I'm open to any questions or comments about this, if you want to just comment "ky$" or "I hate you" I understand, it's totally valid. I just needed to say it, get some advice and answer questions. Have a good night ya'll.
Quick edit before the comments start coming in: Apologies for the long read btw. I also wanted to say if you're ever experiencing negative thoughts regarding anything I stated here, or have any issues in general, PLEASE SEEK HELP. Do not do what I did. More people will understand you than you believe. You are not as alone as you think. Please don't let it get to this point!! Ans also yes guys there is a few more little traumatic events or whatever sprinkled in there that are probably important but I think you guys get the gist.

2024.05.14 04:23 Edumakashun The Root of It All

It's been refreshing to find people here, from all nations and peoples, who understand that anti-American bias is incessant, pervasive, pathological, bigoted, and pernicious. And since I've taught courses on precisely this topic, and published on it, I thought I'd share with you what the root cause of it all is. And it goes back way further than most of us realize, tainting all of Western intellectual history with its foul stench.
Enter: The Enlightenment (and later, the theory of "New World degeneracy")
I always found The Enlightenment to be ironic, since it embodies the polar opposite of anything one could consider to be "enlightened." The continental Europeans, through "Enlightened" philosophy, brought and forced onto the world our modern notions of racism. The father of the movement, Immanuel Kant, was also a major supporter of authoritarianism because, according to his thinking, one cannot develop intellectually without constraints to push against. To that end, he supported the idea of absolute monarchy.
"But those pesky Americans! What is their problem?" asked Kant and his contemporaries, "Surely nothing they do can be considered intellectually or politically worthwhile; they have no control of themselves! They have no absolute power to push against!" So the US developed as an independent, democratic nation, while most of Europe was still under the thumbs of various dictators, monarchs, aristocrats, and various land barons. And that has influenced European thought ever since. Yes, even today, Kant's paradox ("control my thinking so I can think") is pervasive throughout Europe and nations which developed under Europe's influence rather than independently (British Commonwealth countries, in particular, who were "well-behaved" and didn't go all crazy with freedom of thought, expression, or religion, ideas which existed in the USA even when it was still known as British America.) Basically: "America bad! Bad America! Behave! Act right! Stop trying to be all free from us!" Needless to say, there's some remaining bitterness and sour grapes over all that.
Now Enter: The theory of New World degeneracy
Friends, this is where it gets HELLA pernicious. You see, explorers and those who came from Europe to the New World insisted in their writings, and letters to their rulers back home, that anyone who comes to North America degenerates, to the point that "even the dogs bark differently." They based this finding on the Native Americans, who, to them, appeared primitive and weak (and their relative lack of body hair was also used as evidence of that primitivity). And, of course, they extrapolated that to the formerly European colonists who, again, just couldn't control themselves, as they had degenerated. Uncouth bastards. But this theory of degeneracy extended far beyond what's now known as the USA; it served as an ideological basis for the slave trade and colonial genocides around the world. Indeed, racism as we know it would not exist without the European Enlightenment. And although there was plenty of cross-pollination of philosophies and ideas, the intellectual development of the USA was spared the brunt of Europe's bigoted intellectual and political development. I imagine that's why the US is also the ONLY multi-cultural society on the planet that has had even a modicum of success with multi-culturalism. I wonder how they like them apples... (Of course, as an American, I'm not supposed to know about these things. I'm a degenerate.)
Canada, Australia, New Zealand? They came after The Enlightenment and remained part of the gang for a long time; they share the same intellectual and philosophical history with Europe. They were well-behaved colonists who did as the Mother Ship instructed. That's why we're so different. And it's why they, too, suffer from anti-American pathology.
(Obviously, none of the above is intended to imply that the US is lily white. Far from it. Horrendous pockmarks of brutality and racism dot our landscape. There's no denying that, but this isn't the context for that discussion.)
Now, while I realize that things have changed significantly since Kant spanked his monkey in his mom's basement with a feather pen, the point is that all of European civilization and modern intellectualism and philosophy developed around these ideas. Anti-Americanism existed long before the USA existed as a nation. Americans were always already the outsiders. The Other. And the cognitive dissonance is palpable when one speaks to Europeans, who can't seem to fathom that people who misbehaved so badly, and who do their own thing without much care of what their European superiors think, can have such a prosperous and enduring society in which the vast and overwhelming majority of the population is happy.
And if you'd like to read a fantastic (and scholarly, but wonderfully readable) book on anti-Americanism in its most current form, check out Andrei Markovits Uncouth Nation: Why Europe Dislikes America ... Its German translation was a best-seller in Germany -- no surprise there.

2024.05.14 04:08 Godzilla-30 Does anyone remember the incident of Feburary 23rd, 2014?

2024.05.14 03:52 annalisimo Is Cataract surgery harder the more time that has passed? + Any experiences with surgeons in Utah, USA?

Hi all, I'm looking for some answers here as my mom (now 73) had been diagnosed with cataracts like 8 years ago or something and is finally coming around to the idea of surgery after losing almost all functional vision.
Last year she had a stroke and that's messed with her brain, balance and vision even more, and she had great medical care and I think that's finally made her trust modern medicine a bit more than before.
I'm brand new to looking into this for her, but I think having more information on the procedure, side effects, doctors etc. would really help her and I'd love some guidance from folx who know more than me! So Is Cataract surgery harder the more time that has passed? + Any experiences with surgeons in Utah, USA? Any info or resources are appreciate.

Tophia calling Brotherchu Babe
I don’t know if it’s just me, but Tophia almost acts as if she’s jealous of Angie and way to invested in her brothers and Angie’s relationship She’s always made it a point to defend him which it’s one thing to defend your sibling but the way she does it is like those weird boy moms who are obsessed with their sons and borderline emotional incest

2024.05.14 01:58 No-Abalone-2808 Need advice on how to deal with my parent's fatphobic comments.

Hi Reddit. I need help with talking to my parents about their views on weight. I'm a 5'8 female who weighs 165 pounds. Ever since I've gotten home from college, my parents have been making constant remarks about my weight. Pinching my arms, commenting about my face fat, and telling me that I gained a lot of weight and look ugly (I was 160lbs before I went to college and I gained 5lbs). These comments have not only been about me, but my friends too and I'm starting to feel really upset, self-conscious, and uncomfortable around them. The reason I'm even writing this is because my dad just called me fat in front of his friends and told me that I need to lose 10-15 pounds for him to "not be depressed." I come from an Eastern European culture where there is a large emphasis on weight and staying skinny. And I understand that while maybe they're coming from a good place, their words are not at all helpful and in fact hurtful. However, I used to feel comfortable in my own body and my own skin and now I feel awful when I look in the mirror. I've already tried to bring this up to my mom, the fact that her comments may be hurtful, and she didn't understand where I was coming from. She said I was being ridiculous and delusional and that modern society has turned me into a "snowflake." Is there any way I can tell them I'm uncomfortable or get them to stop these comments before I develop an eating disorder?

2024.05.14 01:33 tiddybirdybitch Should I inherit a 2019 Nissan Kicks?

My grandpa passed away last month and had a 2019 Nissan Kicks he was paying off. My mom is willing to use 5k of her inheritance to add to the principle of the loan, and I would get it refinanced in my name. The new loan would be just under 13k.
I currently drive a 2007 Toyota yaris with 236k miles. I drive frequently for work as I see clients in-home. No issues with the car, it runs great. I had initially planned to continue driving the car until it dies, and I know it's still got some life left; the previous owner took excellent care and I have been consistent on care as well. Things I've been especially looking forward to in a new car are apple car play/modern sound system and having my car actually get warm in a reasonable amount of time during the winter (I drive 15 min between seeing clients and my car doesn't get fully warm until I arrive at my next destination).
Here are my concerns: -I love Toyota and the reliability and lifespan of the cars and had previously vowed to only ever purchase Toyotas...I'm still not sure about driving anything other than Toyota (or Honda) -Cost: I'm not thrilled about starting a car payment in the near future, but considering the overall deal I would get with the extra chunk of inheritance from my mother and what my grandpa has already paid, I'm willing to if I know I'm getting a really great overall deal -The steering wheel is a little too close for comfort. I am a large person (about 5'6 and ~290 lbs) and my belly brushes up against the steering wheel. I know the wheel was all the way up when I drove it last time, but I do not know if the wheel was all the way in; I cannot test this right away as I live across the country from my family. If it were to continue to be an issue, are there any accomodations that can be done to help this? The car is comfortable width wise, it's just the steering wheel issue. And please do not suggest weight loss as a solution, I have other health diagnoses and medication that makes it extremely difficult; I'm here to discuss cars, not my body.
Any suggestions or questions to reflect on in making this decision? If you were in my situation, what would you do?

2024.05.13 21:13 RepublicSuperb7872 AITA:For thinking my dad is sleeping with my half sister.

My family and I (24F) found out at the end of last summer, around the beginning of August that my cousin (25F) is actually my sister. Three DNA tests confirmed it. A little back story for you- this has been a “joke” in my dad’s side of the family for my whole life. Mostly coming from him. “What if __ is really your sister? laughs I’m just kidding there’s no way.” Always those types of jokes. I never thought anything about it because she looks SO much like my uncle, but my dad and him look very similar. Also her birthday and my birthday are so close that my dad would’ve had to of cheated on my mom when they FIRST met. Okay. Now to why I thing incest is going on. She started talking to my dad pretty often in August, they did the first test (23 & Me) came back as my half sister. She lived in a different state at that time (August 2023). There’s talk about her trying to plan a trip up to “meet” us all (even though she’s met us all before???) with her fiancé that she had been with for about 6-7 months. Every time it was gonna happen it didn’t. Early September she finds out she’s pregnant. Late September, she finds out she had a miscarriage. She says she needs support bc she has none in the state she’s in. (At that time she lived with her mom and step dad and her two kids, I know her mom, she can be the hovering type but she is VERY OPENLY supportive of her) So she comes to visit for a weekend. They’re at the grocery store (my dad, half sister, my full blood brother, and her fiance) she said she “lost the rest of the baby” now I’ve been lucky enough to never have to experience a miscarriage so I don’t know how that works. She leaves on Sunday. Comes back again the next weekend. Goes home again that Sunday. The next time she came, she didn’t leave. She moved in that quickly. Left her kids with her mom, and said she wanted to build a better life for them. Good for her! After she moves in, the whole house shifted. Mind you, she did move in with her fiancé. There was tension everyday. Arguments way more often than ever in this house not just between her and her finance, but everybody (in the house was:my step-mom, the fiance, my dad, my brother, my half sister, me, my boyfriend, and my 5 kids) They start sitting hip to hip. Not too weird. Then she started following him everywhere. Like to the point where he got up to go to the bathroom, and she followed and stood by the door until he was finished. Then they start holding hands. Openly btw. My step mom confronts that, he says that (we’ll call her A) A, just needs someone, she wants him to make her feel loved, and protected. Whenever they would leave, it was always just them and my brother or just them. Her fiance NEVER went with them ANYWHERE. He started thinking there was someone else because they weren’t having sex, she didn’t want to be around him, wasn’t affectionate, barely talked to him. Weird thing is those same things were happening to my dad and step mom’s relationship of 12 years. December comes, and they’re “staying up so late” they fall asleep on the couch, her head on his lap, or shoulder, him sitting upright. Then it upgrades to them spooning on the couch. Then they start sleeping in my brothers room (he slept in the living room for a while before he started letting them sleep in there, I don’t remember the reason but he is 23). So they start sleeping in my brothers room. So the set up at that point was, my dad and A in one room, my brother in the living room, step mom in what used to be my dad and her room, the fiance on the third floor in what used to be his and A’s room, me and my family in the basement (it’s finished and there’s more room down here). Around Christmas, we find out she’s pregnant. The only people that knew were: me, my boyfriend, my brother and my dad. She didn’t want the fiance to know because she was planning on leaving him in a week from then, and she didn’t want our step mom to know because she didn’t want her to tell the fiance. I thought it was immediately weird, given the sleeping arrangements. So a week goes by, she goes to her old town to get her other daughter (court order—not gonna go into details w/ that) but the fiancé stays home for only the 2nd time. They make these trips every weekend, it was all 3 of them up until about the second week of December ‘23. She breaks up with him, and he comes down to my room, and is bawling. Like, I’ve never seen a man cry like that. He goes on to say that they havent been the same in months, there has to be somebody else she doesn’t love him anymore. We talk with him, try to comfort him, say our goodbyes and then he goes to get some things from our garage. My bf follows him, and the finance ends up saying either: they haven’t had sex at all since the miscarriage in September’23 OR they haven’t had much sex since the miscarriage in September ‘23. So he moves back to his home town, and then they come home on Sunday like they always do. Except this time, they start sleeping in A’s OLD bedroom. The one her and the fiancé shared. Even more privacy. Fast forward to now. They’re still sleeping in that bedroom, she has sex toys in her night stand (I thought she stole a hair claw from me so I went snooping, I know invasion of privacy but she had the EXACT hair claw that I had, and mine was missing), my dad waits on her, gets her food, drinks etc. He’s been to every single baby appointment she’s had (I did confront him abt this because I have 5 kids and he’s NEVER been to ANY of my OBGYN appointments or ultrasounds for them, his reasoning for going with her is that she has nobody up here), he asked my brother if THEY could take over his room again when she’s has the baby which is September. (Which makes the conceived month, December), He stopped making comments to me about wearing a tank top or shorts. He used to say something along the lines of “you look like a hooker” or “put more clothes on” now, nothing. My step-mom got sick and is in a nursing home now, and has been for over a month and he still hasn’t went back to his bedroom. He washes their clothes (in my head, what 48y/o dad would be washing/touching his 25y/o daughter’s bras, and underwear? He’s never done my laundry, and him and my step mom always did their own). I don’t think ITA for thinking these things, but I’m wondering what others would think if they were in this situation I guess.
Edit: I forgot to add, when they started sleeping in my brothers room I went in there to wrap presents for my kids. My dad had a white t shirt on the bed, and I picked it up. As I did that, the shirt unstuck itself. Clearly some “bodily fluids” (don’t know how explicit I can get but yes probably what you’re thinking). I told my brother, he IMMEDIATELY called my dad and confronted him. My dad said that it was indeed that, BUT he was in there alone. (Why are you doing that in your son’s room?) then he asked who knew. Brother told him just him, even though him, my step mom and myself knew. Then my dad said not to tell anybody else. This phone call was on the car radio on their weekend trip to her hometown. Completely fooled my brother, and since then if anything like that is talked about my dad in front of my brother, he gets super defensive IMMEDIATELY.

2024.05.13 20:28 the_running_stache I enjoyed my first-ever trip to Kolkata; highly recommend!

I enjoyed my first-ever trip to Kolkata; highly recommend!
TL;DR: Thanks for having me in your city. I had a great time!
Artwork depicting Kolkata
I had lunch at the original location!
Desserts/mithai
Avartana 9-course tasting menu
Fennel Panna Cotta
I am a Mumbai guy and visited Kolkata for the first-time ever. I visited during the worst possible season when the temperatures were 42-44 degC at their max, but I had a great time.
I was supposed to visit with my friend but she couldn't make it due to some reasons and I ended up having a solo trip. No worries because I love to travel solo. (She informed me well in advance, so it's not like she canceled last minute.)
Stay:
I stayed at the ITC Royal Bengal for 3 nights and chose to spend 1 night at The Oberoi Grand. Why different hotels? Just to experience the hotels and the neighborhoods. Both hotels were great. The hard product (rooms and amenities) was really great at ITC, but the soft product (service) was much better at Oberoi.
Food:
  • I should preface with: I am a vegetarian.
  • I went to 6 Ballygunge Place to try authentic Bengali food and opted for their buffet. I enjoyed it a lot.
  • I also had the 9-course menu at Avartana in ITC Royal Bengal; it was a great experience. I know that having South Indian food in Kolkata is a faux paus - why not have more local food instead? But I wanted to try out that restaurant and it was indeed very good.
  • I had my breakfasts at ITC and Oberoi, so I didn't venture out for that.
  • I enjoyed the street kathi rolls.
  • I had delicious desserts - rasgulla, sandesh, mishti doi, and Tiramisu (I know... there's an imposter in here, but I enjoyed them all).
  • I had good drinks (beers and cocktails) at various bars (and trust me, I tried a lot of them on Park St - Social, Effingut, Olterra, to name a few, at bars in Salt Lake City, and the bars in ITC & Oberoi. Yes, I drank a lot every night that I was there; yes, I know I have a problem. Haha).
Visit:
I wanted to have a relaxing trip and so I didn't go overboard on the sightseeing.
I checked out Prinsep Ghat, Old Kolkata heritage buildings (High Court, Bidhan Sabha, Town Hall, Raj Bhavan, etc.), Howrah Bridge, Vidyasagar Setu, Victoria Memorial, Salt Lake neighborhood, some temples (didn't go to any major ones), Kumartuli, Bara Bazar, College Street, Alipore Museum, Golf Course, etc.
Due to the heat (Mumbai was at 32 degC, whereas Kolkata was at 44 degC), I chose to just do a private caUber ride for most of these places. I had hired a good local guide (who also drove me around) and showed me all the places. I also went to Howrah and saw Nabanna (obviously, from outside).
Traveling around/Transportation:
I chose to fly into and out of Kolkata. I was initially thinking of taking a train, but then looking at the time it would have taken from Mumbai, I chose air travel instead and am very glad about it. Vistara had good on-time service both ways. It set the right tone for the trip.
As I mentioned earlier, I booked a private car for some of the sightseeing and took Ubers around for the most part. I did ride the tram (number 5) from Esplanade to College Street and took the Metro back from Girish Park to Esplanade just to experience it.
Shopping:
I didn't do a lot of shopping, but bought myself a kurta (Panjabi) and dhuti from Adi Akshoy at Triangular Park. I hadn't researched on shopping and the guide directed me here.
I bought a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses because I was walking past a store and really thought of getting a new pair of sunglasses (while I was wearing another pair of Ray-Bans). Tbh, I could have just bought this in Mumbai, but it was an impulse buy.
And then I bought a lot of books at the airport for my return. Argh! I already have so many at home, but couldn't resist. I should have just headed to the airport lounge directly instead of wasting time in the terminal shopping for books.
Some things worth mentioning:
  • I guess this is the Indian city with the maximum modes of transportation - taxis, auto-rickshaws, 6-people rickshaws, hand-pulled rickshaws, trams, buses, private buses, old Metro, new Metro, ferries, small boats, Ubers, Uber Bike (I don't see this in Mumbai), etc.
  • Salt Lake seems very different from the rest of the city.
  • When the CM moved the CM's office to Nabanna, technically, since the CM sits in the capital city, does that make Howrah the capital city now? I know it's not and it would anger most people here, but just was wondering. My guide had no idea; he kept on insisting that Kolkata is the capital of the state. Haha.
  • I found a lot of similarities in the British architecture in Kolkata and (South) Mumbai, but Kolkata has a red-and-white color scheme going on a lot. I am no expert in Victorian or baroque architecture, so pardon me if there are vast differences in style.
  • I didn't get to visit some major sights like Belur Math or Dakhineswar Temple. I chose to be lazy in the hotels and relax at the swimming pools instead. The afternoon heat made the pools and the air-conditioned bars (cold beers and G&Ts) very inviting. That's ok, I guess.
  • I couldn't find a place for jhaal muri! I got dry jhaal muri at the airport lounge on my way out, but it wasn't the authentic experience I was looking for. Where should I have looked?
  • I loved your aloo dum and luchis.
  • I wanted to get the shakha pola bangles for my mother, but I couldn't find any place. My guide took me to a (gold) jeweler... um, no, that's not the same thing. Where should I have gone? I feel bad that I didn't bring anything back for my mom from the trip :(
Just other some things:
(and I am not trying to look down upon it, but just writing a truthful account of my experience)
  • ITC Royal Bengal was a shitshow on the weekend! It was overcrowded due to the IPL (and some football matches as well) - I saw a lot of foreign and Indian players, but since I don't follow cricket, I couldn't recognize anyone. But everyone in the lobby - me, other guests, including those players - was frustrated because check-in was taking a long time; they made me wait 2+ hours just to check-in! It wasn't just me; most guests were frustrated and this was not expected from ITC. Sunday breakfast was also like a zoo; it was overpacked. Note to self: avoid visiting this hotel on weekends.
  • Oberoi Grand is nice, but the whole aesthetic is very dated. I understand it is a heritage property with grand vanities and beds in teakwood which is supposed to be the ultimate old-school wealth indicating the person comes from wealth, but when compared with the contemporary and modern look at ITC, it felt very dated. Also, if you are staying at the Oberoi, please try to get an inside-facing (pool-facing) room; the view outside is not at all something special you would want to view.
  • Please don't take this the wrong way: There should be more focus on the overall cleanliness by the city municipal corporation. And I say this coming from Mumbai, which I am fully aware is not known for its cleanliness either. But Mumbai seems cleaner. For example, I took a kathi roll somewhere on Park Street and was walking around looking for a dustbin/garbage can to throw the wrapper and my tissue papepaper napkin, but there was none! I walked a few blocks just searching for one. I asked around and people laughed at me. Finally, a paanwala told me - just throw it on the side, there are no dustbins here; a guy comes in the morning and cleans it all - that's not good imho. There were just piles of trash littered on the sides of the streets and foot paths, which is sad. Also, the route from ITC to Oberoi (via Dhapa Road and Debendra Chandra Dey Road) was interesting...
Overall: 5/5 stars

2024.05.13 18:14 yuei2 An insane theory based on a fragmented dream from last night.

So I was re-watching Dark Road before bed cause why the hell not and one of the things that stuck in my brain was the scene where Odin explains darkness to the kids. How darkness used to be something that would infect and inhabit people as vessels like a disease, but eventually people managed to start producing darkness just by themselves. He said that over the years darkness had managed to reshape humanity but there were no details. As I let that thought linger in my mind as I drifted to sleep my brain conjured quite a wild dream idea....what if it wasn't darkness that reshaped humanity but humanity that reshaped darkness.
So before I explain that let's go over a few important things...
In Missing-Link we know there is a place called the Astral Dimension, it's a space that "connects existence and non-existence, holds fragments of memories called pieces, and is a mysterious space full of heartless but no people with hearts so they invade from it." The Astral Dimension appears to look like Scala due to something called the "layer effect" and it's glitching out as if it's a hologram overlay or something. One of the oddest things here is the existence of the emblem heartless long before they were supposed to be created. This unexplained oddity however first appears not in Missing-Link but instead in Dark Road.
In Dark Road we get quite a revelation about the state of the worlds. First worlds were still being restored as recently as Master Xehanort's youth. Second worlds are restored at different rates and this is what causes them to all have their own time axis. Third there doesn't appear to being any active creation going on, whatever is re-creating the world seems to be some sort of passive system put in place a long time ago. Fourth until a world is recompleted it's filled with heartless, not just pure-blood heartless but emblem heartless are there to and Nomura said this oddity would be explained in Missing-Link.
An empty world devoid of people but filled with heartless....it sounds a little like the astral dimension right? Though it's weird, why are people the last step to come back and furthermore what happens to all the heartless when they do? Why do the heartless infesting these worlds just vanish and no one seems to really have knowledge of them? Hell after the worlds came back why weren't they still be invaded by the astral dimension heartless like Scala constantly was?
Then there is the matter of people themselves, how DID they bring back lost people? It took us a whole lot of trouble to bring back just 3 people and they had existing hearts to work from or at least pieces of them in order to do so. Yet somehow they figured out how to bring back not only the worlds but also the people in them, and what's even stranger is the worlds reformed aren't the past versions we never see but the present/future versions. Like Agrabah when Xehanort's class first visited it there were no people and the setting looked like modern day Agrabah, but when they revisited it later it had gotten further and people existed in it now but not stuff like Jafar's ancestor but the actual Jafar. One possibility of course is that the people themselves are born without hearts like data-sora and grew them over time...but I had a different idea.
With all that in mind let me propose to you what I think may be the truth of the world.
The Astral Dimension still exists but it goes under a different name now, the realm of light.
In order to rebuild the lost world they used book of prophecies (the thing the MoM said was important to shaping the world into what it needed to be and that it needed to be given to Ephemer for that purpose) in conjunction with a refined version of the layer-effect system.
Essentially they set it up so bit by bit using the data from the book they layered over pieces of the astral dimension with specific world data, and then you can think of it a little bit like 3D printing. Going over it again and again printing more and more of the world until it was a physically finalized stable thing instead of the glitching thing we see in Missing-Link. That's what Xehanort's line means by Scala being the nexus from which all worlds spring from, the system recreating the worlds is in scala somewhere.
As for the matter of the people they did the same thing, but instead of layer world data over sections of the astral dimension...they layered people data over the astral dimension's inhabitants.
What are those inhabitants? None other than the heartless and what are heartless but hearts fallen to darkness that have lost themselves. THAT is how they managed to bring back real people. They took raw components, the heartless containing fallen hearts, and reshaped them into people. This is why people are the last thing to come back and the heartless vanished, because at their core the people ARE those heartless.
In essence they built people around the heartless and used the lost hearts held within the heartless to act as the basis for their new heart, in a way the heartless they originally were essentially became locked inside of these people's hearts. Humanity reshaped darkness but couldn't purge it completely, the dark core still exists as a hint to this truth and that is why they have the ability to produce darkness on their own now. Then when these people reproduce they created new beings, new hearts, hearts naturally composed of darkness and light and able to create both.
That is the truth that Xehanort realized, that people aren't people, they are darkness reshaped into people. Their light, their self, their humanity is something was essentially implanted into them, farcical people who produce more of their own kind. People who because they don't even understand their true nature and are in fact told to fear it....have no control of it. They leak darkness out into the world haphazardly and it infects others creating chaos that swallows people and worlds whole. Yet at the same time it's only when they give in and act upon their darkness that they are being true to their core nature and thus Xehanort's belief it be better for people to allow darkness to rule them.
Which ultimately means Emblem Heartless weren't created by Xehanort when he had amnesia, rather they were unleashed from within people who already had them sealed inside. Emblem Heartless came from the book of prophecies, they remained after the original worlds and people fell to plague of darkness, and then they were sealed inside of people by reshaping them into people. Xehanort unleashed them through his experiments and they spread to create more of their kind and the MoM could see this happen and wrote it into the book in the past completing the loop.
With that insane idea out of the way let's look at how this recontextualizes things, particularly the world setup and the walls of light. If we reverse the thinking on the idea that darkness reshaped humanity to humanity reshaped darkness, we can do the same here. The world being deliberately broken and sealed away behind walls wasn't to create just protection but a prison.
The people of Scala rebuilt the world by layering worlds from the book of prophecy over the astral dimension, and they restored the lost people by layering data from people in the book over the heartless. By transforming heartless into people they no longer had to worry about the threat of invasion, but the heartless aren't gone just sealed within and there was always the chance they could escape.
This is where the walls of light come in, they created cages around these worlds as a contingency. If one of these people ended up falling and unleashing the darkness, the heartless, within their damaged would be limited by the walls keeping them contained in that world. Furthermore they stopped layering Scala across the entire astral dimension so there were minimal to no land routes connecting the worlds anymore. The keybladers left themselves a specific pathway into these worlds that bypass the walls and figured out how to transform their keyblades into gliders so they could navigate the space between the worlds. This way keyblades could then strike down those fallen reverting them back to light, essentially keybladers were supposed to be the anti-virus.
Darkness however is a hive-mind, it originally stems from a singular entity that could infect and divide. That means that if all people are darkness at their core then on some subconscious level they are all connected to another through their darkness. That connection is I believe what the corridors of darkness truly are. In Dark Road Xehanort says that the corridors of darkness were filled with negative emotions leaking in from many people, and that explains this. The corridors of darkness are the links between the darkness that connects hearts.
Just as Sora is able with the power of waking to use links between hearts to travel between worlds without without special ships or lanes and the walls still up, corridors are the same. A corridor of darkness is using the darkness that connects every heart to travel worlds. Only by giving into your true dark nature be it briefly through strong negative emotions, transforming yourself into a dark being by fully embracing your darkness (Riku), or transforming yourself into a being that exists in an in-between (Nobodies) can you gain the power to access these paths.
Lasty for people's memories, they should remember the heartless but don't, they should remember Missing-Link and yet it's been said upfront this period of time will be forgotten. I think an explanation for that is that the memory has been deliberately suppressed/re-writen to hide this truth. When the world reaches full completion and all the heartless have been reshaped into people there is a memory rewrite to wipe out any chance of the knowledge carrying over, and then world begins anew in earnest. (Which is why the same Disney events in Dark Road repeated 80+ years later) Starting from the same scripts of their origins but then allowed to evolve and deviate once the script either is derailed or reaches it end, produce new people, new events, etc...
It's not the first time something like this would of happened. That's what happened with the Dandelions, in order to hide the tragedy of the keyblade war the memories of all but the Dandelion leaders were re-written with the excuse that nothing good come from remembering that tragedy. Scala was founded by one of the leaders that knew that happened, Ephemer. While initially against the idea they ended up coming around and agreeing to it. I can very easily imagine he carried that belief and taught it to others thus leading it to happening again.
Scala's system was designed so ultimate people would be free of knowledge of their dark origins, it can't erase their ability to produce darkness but it can at least keep them in the dark on why they do.

2024.05.13 15:45 Frantic_Fanatic13 Inlaws purchased an RV

We visited my inlaws on Mother’s Day and there was an RV in the driveway. They’re barely able to pay their bills. They have wanted one for a while and decided to visit a dealership to browse. As soon as the salesperson arrived it was over. My MiL has the gift of gab and gave the salesperson everything they needed. She started telling him about how they had a pop up years ago but miss camping. She explained that they couldn’t afford it but she’d been praying that they could get one. The salesperson goes on to tell her that it must have been a miracle that she decided to come to their lot. The employees all get together and pray each day before work starts and they had just concluded their morning meeting.
He showed them a few and she didn’t like any of them. They looked “too modern” and the layout is wrong. She then told them that it didn’t look like the one she had seen in her dreams. The sales person then told her that that he had one that would be perfect. It was the only one that had an older layout. It was a few years old but would be what she wanted. She freaked out when she saw it and had to have it. It was a “God-thing” and just like the one in her dreams.
One has to wonder though why this 2021 unit is still onsite. Well, it had been returned by the previous owner because it was a lemon. They kept having issues and it spent most of 2 years in the shop being repaired. They told my in-laws that everything has been fixed now and it’s basically a new RV. I asked if they got a decent deal and while it was the cheapest one on the lot the brand new 2024s that are a comparable model were marginally more.
They already live paycheck to paycheck and it’s only going to get worse but “God wanted them to have it”. They don’t have enough to retire and it’s become clear that they will likely have to come live with their kids. None of them get along with their mom because she’s the definition of gas-lighting, takes no responsibility, boomer.
