2024.05.14 16:32 atyshkaPurchasing Advice: choosing RAM for web-heavy PhD workload?
I'm an academic researcher who spends a lot of time searching for papers, working in Google docs, taking notes, reading/annotating PDFs, etc. I've got several concurrent research projects organized in Safari Tab Groups which collectively total >100 tabs. My current rig is a 2016 Macbook Pro w/ 16 gigs RAM. It's fine but it's starting to show its age and hasn't gotten the last 2 updates, so I'm looking to upgrade. As far as purchasing advice, most people would say if you're not doing coding or video editing then a 16GB Air should be fine. The thing is, my current machine's RAM is always full, whether it's Google Docs using 700Mb per tab or Electron apps like Teams. I'm usually running on 4-5 gigs of swap unless I'm restarting Safari daily. I've heard that the M-series chips run more smoothly with swap though than the Intel machines, is that really true? The bottom line is I want to believe the 16GB M3 or 18GB M3 Pro will meet my needs as the 24GB/36GB upgrades are costly, but I don't want to have a brand new machine feel under-specced. Any suggestions from those with similar workloads who have moved from Intel?

Tracking showed my normal passport renewal application was received on 5/3 but every time I checked on my iPhone (Safari), there were no updates (not “in process”). Finally I tried using the Chrome browser on a laptop yesterday and the update feature worked (it showed “in process”). I also realized that the email updates I had requested on my phone hadn’t gone through. Anyway, just got an email today (5/14) saying passport is “approved.” Hoping to have it soon!

2024.05.14 12:41 More_Helicopter_688Post trip report Two weeks with a toddler (Lake Como, Gardaland, Venice)
We just got back from a wonderful trip in the northern part of Italy with our 3-year-old. Having spent 2 weeks on one of our best trips so far, I really want to thank a bunch of fellow redditors who helped refine our itinerary and suggested places which otherwise would not have made it to our plan! Day 1 Milan: We took a flight from India and landed in Milan in the afternoon. Milan was just the arrival point for us and we did not intend to visit Milan as such, so we ended up booking a room in the hotel at the Malpensa Airport itself. Nothing much that day; a bit of rest and a delicious dinner were a great start to our trip. Day 2 Drive from Milan to Bellagio: Woke up after a good night's sleep (a much needed one after the long sleepless flight the day before). Breakfast at the hotel was really good with a lot of options for everyone. We had booked a car through SIXT at the Malpensa airport. Getting the car was a breeze with great service from the representative at the SIXT counter. The drive to Bellagio was a very good one. I was still getting used to the car, since I come from a land of right-hand drive and switching to a left-hand drive meant putting in a lot more focus on the road. Driving along the Lake Como was a fantastic experience. We reached Bellagio by lunch time and our AirBnB was ready for us. The rest of the day was at leisure, with a casual walk around Bellagio, through the city center and along the lake. Day 3 Bellagio to Varenna: Took a ferry to Varenna and had breakfast at a lake side cafe. With great weather on our side, a cup of coffee and a little pastry seemed more blissful than we thought of! We had signed up for a picnic on the hills of Camaggiore, a 40-minute drive from the Varenna ferry station. We had our representative waiting for us and she drove us to the picnic spot, sharing tales from the towns of Lake Como, showing us amazing views along the way. The picnic itself was surreal, with the most beautiful view of the lake from 1200 meters above. We spend the rest of the day exploring Varenna at our pace, while our little one slept like a log in the stoller. Day 4 Bellagio: After debating weather to visit the Como town or not, we decided to stay in Bellagio in explore the town a bit more. We took a ride of the Bellagio Express, the toy train that takes you around the town. It was a fun ride, intended for our toddler, who decided to doze off in the train itself! Post that, we saw the gardens of the Villa Melzi. We had rented a boat to explore the lake ourselves during the evening, but rainy weather made us cancel our plans. We spent the rest of the evening, relaxing at our AirBnB, overlooking the lake. Day 5 Drive from Bellagio to Gardaland: Moving on to the next leg of our trip, which was clearly planned keeping our little boy in mind, we drove to Gardaland reaching there by noon. Thanks to a wonderful fellow Redditor, we got introduced to this wonderland called Gardaland! Our stay was booked at the Gardaland Hotel and while we were waiting for our room to get ready, we decided to pay a visit to the Gardaland Resort park right away. A drizzly weather kept most of the visitors inside the SEA Aquarium, but that also meant we had absolutely no waiting times on most of the rides in the park! The little one was elated to see the Peppa Pig Land, and refused to move away from it. All in all, day one in the park was a super success despite the wet weather. Evening at the hotel was full of fun-filled activities for the kids. The entertainment team at Gardaland Hotel did a fabulous job at keeping kids engaged. Day 6 Gardaland: Our second day in the Gardaland park was a much more planned one, since we had already explored some of the park on the previous day. We knew the rides we wanted to go on, and so logistics were simpler. Weather was great too, and so we had a wonderful time! The park has a plethora of options to eat, with a ton of sweet treats along the way. The park is huge but very well laid out with clean facilities. Naturally, day two also could not be completed without visiting our favorite Peppa Pig! Evening at the hotel was again fun-filled with the team at Gardaland doing what they do the best! Day 7 Parco Natura Viva: Gardaland is in proximity to a lot of amusement parks and points of recreation for family and friends. One of them is Parco Natura Viva, a zoo with a drive-through safari. It was a Saturday and the zoo had enormous waiting times for the cars to enter the Safari. After having waited in the queue for over an hour, we finally started the Safari, which turned out to be pretty great. Next, we had the fauna park (the walkable part of the zoo), the one with animals in their enclosures. With the entire park divided into geographical zones, it was fun seeing animals from various continents. The place is well-maintained, and creates a great experience for kids. Day 8 Verona: We had kept an extra day in Gardaland just in case the little man wanted to visit the park again. However, given the proximity, we decided to do a day trip to Verona instead. We drove to Verona and parked our car in one of the paid parking lots. We had reserved a morning slot for a walking tour, that took us through the streets of Verona, with our very knowledgeable guide sharing tales from historic Verona, the castle and gate to the old city center. The center was bustling with stores and eateries. Very touristy but was all the more fun! Our taste buds were craving for some Indian food and we ended up having lunch at an amazing Indian restaurant named "Maharajah". The food was delectable with very prompt service. As touristy as it sounds, we did go to "Casa di Giulietta", commonly known as Juliet's house that is known for the legacy of Romeo and Juliet having been inspired from there. The so-called Juliet's balcony is missable at best. Day 9 Drive from Gardaland to Venice: Switching to the last leg of our trip, this was supposed to be the wife's part of the trip. She has wanted to visit Venice for as long as she remembers, and this trip could not have happened without a leisurely stay in the city of canals! This was also the last day of us keeping the car, and we drove to Venice Marco Polo Airport where we returned the car at the SIXT counter. Once again, just like the pick-up the return process was extremely smooth and lasted barely a couple of minutes. Our plan was to catch the Alilaguna airport water bus to the main island, but we decided to splurge at the last moment and took the water taxi instead. And boy were we happy! The water taxi is an experience in itself, especially when entering the canals from the airport. Our AirBnB was located right on the Grand Canal, giving us uninterrupted views of the Canal. For a place that looked better in person than in pictures, what more could we have asked for! We spent the evening walking to the Rialto Bridge, people-watching! Day 10 St. Marks square and Dodge's Palace: After a good night's sleep, we woke up refreshed, taking in the morning views of the Grand Canal, with the gondola's and the various boats floating by, doing their chores for the day. We had booked a tour of the St. Marks square and the Basilica, along with the Dodge's Palace. Unfortunately, it had to be a rainy day. While we still participated in the tour, the place became very crowded because a lot of people tried to maximize on the time indoors to avoid the rain. Nonetheless, it was a good experience. The little one dozed off in the Basilica and so we let my wife carry on with the tour of the palace, while I took a table under an umbrella at the Cafe Lavena to get myself some coffee, and to let my son enjoy his sleep. We spent the evening loitering around the Rialto market, spoiling ourselves with a few gelatos at Suso! Day 11 Murano, Burano and Torcello: We woke up early, fixed ourselves some breakfast and were ready to leave. We had booked a tour of the 3 islands and our job was to get to the meeting point as soon as possible. Unfortunately, we missed our group and had to visit the islands on our own. The upside to this was that we could do it at our own pace! This included having a hearty lunch at a beautiful local cafe in Torcello. This place had a chidren's play area too! This also meant spending more time than necessary in Burano, because why not? We loved the colorful houses on the island and we just wanted to be there, taking in everything it had... Day 12 Leisure and Photoshoot: My wife and I generally have this idea of booking a small photoshoot at every exquisite location we visit. This not only gives us great pictures for memories, but it also allows us to see areas which we would otherwise not know existed. We booked this experience through AirBnB and our photographer was a wonderful man, very learned and a true Venetian at heart! He took us to places that were free of tourists, for some amazing pictures. Not only that, he also arranged for a special Gondola ride for us, which took us through the narrower canals of Venice, adding to the already special experience. A trip to Venice is really incomplete without a Gondola ride, and we were glad we could! This was the last evening of our trip and we could not conclude it without a few more Aperol Spritz's and Gelatos from Suso! With every trip we take, we learn a lot, that helps us make our future trips better. We consciously chose to skip the more popular locations like Rome and Florence (Tuscany), since we wanted to have ample time of leisure and just do nothing, with a toddler who wanted to just be. If I could summarize the learnings of this trip, they would be:
Travelling with a toddler is great, if you leave a lot of room for rest and leisure. It not only allows you to be, but it also leaves scope to rome around the place and absorb the local life beyond the tourist favourites
Lake Como has a lot to offer. While day trips from Milan sound good, staying in a Lake Como town lets you enjoy the serenity of the lake in a more intimate manner. A couple of days at the least, three days to make it worth while.
Driving around Lake Como can be fun, but can also become a bit intimidating if you are trying to drive slow on the roads that circle the lake and there are cars behind you, trying to get ahead. Staying calm is the key!
Gardaland is unchartered territory for people outside Italy, and if travelling with kids, must find a place in the itinerary.
We had a lot of people advising us against spending 4 days in Venice, but we do not regret it even a bit. Venice is a city unlike anything we've been to so far. It is very difficult to imagine the daily life of the people living there, unless you decide to stop and slow things down yourself, experiencing the little things that the place has to offer.
It is absolutely ok to not cover every point of interest at a place you are staying. Ticking everything off the list does not give the same satisfaction as enjoying the few things that you do, at a pace that you like.
Lastly, strollers are a boon, even with the cobbled streets. They serve a great deal for quick afternoon naps, as well as meal times. It indeed is a pain carrying them over the hundreds of bridges in a place like Venice, but the pros still outweigh the cons.
2024.05.14 12:18 rob_smiPNG export from an SVG string via painting on the canvas only works after several attempts.
I have a mind mapping app that has been running well on Android for a few years now. I have been trying to publish it for iOS and MacOS for some time now. On iOS (as an app) and MacOS (in the browser for testing) I have a problem with the export. The app is a project in Angular, Cordova, Typescript. The problem only occurs in the Safari browser, which is also used in the Cordova version for iOS. I was able to test it on my Mac and an iPhone. The error does not occur on the Mac in Chrome. The error If I export a mind map that contains images as an image (.png), the images of the nodes are not displayed in the exports. Everything else in the map is exported correctly, only the images are missing. Only when I export the map three times are the images present in the export. If I add a new image and export it again, the image is only visible in the exported image after 3 exports. It is interesting that the export as SVG, which I also offer, contains the images of the nodes. So the SVG string that I create has all the necessary information. The base The mind map consists of various things. HTML and CSS for the frames, lines etc... The images of the nodes are saved as Base64 and each node is in a Foreign Object. Example of the SVG export Mindmap with 2 nodes and the Base64 characters of the node images have been replaced with XXX.
This is how I create the .png file to be exported. I can view all this content in the map view of the app. When exporting to an image, I take this information, turn it into an SVG, have the browser draw it on the canvas and then output it as a graphic. Something must be going wrong at this point.
What I have already tried. I have already tested various things such as time delays etc..., none of which change anything. It seems to me that it's a combination of the caching and the order or speed at which the images are loaded. Only the speed can't be, because built-in delays don't change anything. My guess But it must have something to do with Safari because on the Mac in Chrome it runs without problems... Maybe it can't handle so many base64 images or it exports faster than it renders? Whereby the SVG export contains all the information and when I open the SVG, all the content is also displayed in the browser in seconds. So something must happen when painting on the canvas and outputting as an image. It doesn't really make sense, I'm really at the end of my ideas. What can you do? I really hope you can help me. A mind mapping app without image export makes little sense. And since the app otherwise works great, I'm really getting desperate. :( Thanks a lot! Rob
2024.05.14 11:48 Fine-Palpitation-943A question for ADAS users
Hello everyone, I am in market, searching for a mid-size SUV for my cousin brother, who is upgrading from his humble i20. Lately, he’s been watching many YouTube videos from various individual creators, and other professional media houses, who are praising the ADAS system inordinately. He has a budget of 25lacs, however I am seeing a trend amongst manufacturers. The top model of a vehicle, has another additional model, which comes with ADAS, and a premium of almost 1-1.5 lacs just for the ADAS features. We took a test drive of Hector with ADAS (I own the non-ADAS version of it), Harrier, Safari and XUV. We even looked at Elevate and Seltos, and we found that almost every SA of every company, turned the ADAS off at the start of the TD, or had it completely off prior the commencement of TD. Upon asking the reason, we got a mixed bag reply stating that customers aren’t used to ADAS, so when they rash drive the TD vehicle it tends to break abruptly and with full force if the sensors aren’t turned off. I then met a friend who drives an Elevate ZX CVT, he had his ADAS turned off completely stating the same reason that it breaks abruptly, amplifying the chances of getting rear ended. If that is the case, why are people spending a fortune on ADAS features if they are going to mute them anyway? I would want to ask people here, specifically who own cars with ADAS, about how they are using their vehicles? Thanks in advance.
2024.05.14 11:44 vidmeduffyEffects animation lag on page load in MacOS Safari. Known issue?
Hi all. Hoping someone can help. When loading my site in MacOS Safari (17.2.1), the effects/animations lag significantly (See video here: https://www.awesomescreenshot.com/video/27645048?key=972a1218c82f2cc54db2981410d418a9 — and overall, site-wide effects look bad compared to Chrome — like the frame rate is lower. For context, all effects in the hero are triggered on 'Appear' to slide in from bottom with the following settings: Stiffness 150; Damping 30; Mass 1; Bezier 0.44, 0, 0.56, 1; Time .6; Ease in and out; And delays of .1, .2, .3, .4, and .5 for each of the 5 layers. When I load in a private window, the load effects don't have the same major lag, but the effects are still generally choppy as described above. Have cleared cache, etc., to try to remedy the issue to no avail. Any ideas what might be going on? Have tried searching around but haven't found much to go on. Here's a link to the site https://workmode.fyi — would appreciate if you'd lmk if you can replicate the same issues. Thank you! 🙏

I can't seem to find the revised version of The Song Rising in Audible. The Mime Order and The Mask Falling were available but I can only see the third book in its original text published in 2017, not the one that was released today. Is it just me? UPDATE 5/14: Samantha Shannon mentioned troubles for The Song Rising audiobook in the comment section on an Instagram post. Said she would post on her insta stories when it's available.

2024.05.14 07:44 Murky_Egg_5794CORS not working for app in Docker but work when run on simple dotnet command
Hello everyone, I am totally new to Docker and I have been stuck on this for around 5 days now. I have a web app where my frontend is using react and Node.js and my backend is using C#, aspNet, to run as a server. I have handled CORS policy blocking as below for my frontend (running on localhost:3000) to communicate with my backend (running on localhost:5268), and they work fine. The code that handles CORS policy blocking:
However, when I implement Docker into my code and run the command docker run -p 5268:80 App to start Docker of my backend, I received an error on my browser:
Access to XMLHttpRequest at 'http://localhost:5268/news' from origin 'http://localhost:3000' has been blocked by CORS policy: Response to preflight request doesn't pass access control check: No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource.
I add Krestrel to appsetting.json to change the base service port as below:
# Get base SDK Image from Microsoft FROM AS build-env WORKDIR /app ENV ASPNETCORE_URLS=http://+:80 EXPOSE 80 # Copy the csproj and restore all of the nugets COPY *.csproj ./ RUN dotnet restore # Copy the rest of the project files and build out release COPY . ./ RUN dotnet publish -c Release -o out # Generate runtime image FROM WORKDIR /app COPY --from=build-env /app/out . ENTRYPOINT [ "dotnet", "backend.dll" ]
I did some research on this and found that I need to use NGINX to fixed it, so I add nginx.conf and tell docker to read nginx.config as well as below: now my Dockerfile only has:
# Read NGIXN config to fixed CORS policy blocking FROM nginx:alpine WORKDIR /etc/nginx COPY ./nginx.conf ./conf.d/default.conf EXPOSE 80 ENTRYPOINT [ "nginx" ] CMD [ "-g", "daemon off;" ]mcr.microsoft.com/dotnet/sdk:7.0mcr.microsoft.com/dotnet/sdk:7.0
here is nginx.conf:
upstream api { # Could be host.docker.internal - Docker for Mac/Windows - the host itself # Could be your API in a appropriate domain # Could be other container in the same network, like container_name:port server 5268:80; } server { listen 80; server_name localhost; location / { if ($request_method = 'OPTIONS') { add_header 'Access-Control-Max-Age' 1728000; add_header 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' '*'; add_header 'Access-Control-Allow-Headers' 'Authorization,Accept,Origin,DNT,X-CustomHeader,Keep-Alive,User-Agent, X-Requested-With,If-Modified-Since,Cache-Control,Content-Type,Content-Range,Range'; add_header 'Access-Control-Allow-Methods' 'GET,POST,OPTIONS,PUT,DELETE,PATCH'; add_header 'Content-Type' 'application/json'; add_header 'Content-Length' 0; return 204; } add_header 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' '*'; add_header 'Access-Control-Allow-Headers' 'Authorization,Accept,Origin,DNT,X-CustomHeader,Keep-Alive,User-Agent, X-Requested-With,If-Modified-Since,Cache-Control,Content-Type,Content-Range,Range'; add_header 'Access-Control-Allow-Methods' 'GET,POST,OPTIONS,PUT,DELETE,PATCH'; proxy_pass http://api/; } }
when I build docker by running: docker build -t kcurr-backend . and then running command docker run -p 5268:80 kcurr-backend, no error shown on console as below:

2024.05.14 07:31 Otherwise_Eye_8559AITA for yelling at my grandpa after he corrected me for throwing food at my cousin?
I know the title sounds bad but hear me out. I (15f) have a younger cousin (11m) who is clearly my grandmas favorite. For some context I am the oldest out of 5 grandchildren and my cousin is the oldest grandson( so 3rd oldest), I know it might seem unrelated but it not. My grandparents on my moms side only had girls, my aunt and my mom, then when my mom had kids she had only girls too, me and my sister. When we were younger my grandparents would always try and correct us, so if I was sitting weird they would say stuff like it’s not very lady like or one time my sister mispronounced library and my grandma pulled up a video and told her if she was going to speak English speak it right. This would all happen when we were around my cousins age. When it come to my cousin they never tell him anything and if I try to say anything my grandparents tell me to stop being hard on him, but it’s not like I’m telling him to do much though. The extent of what I have ever told him to do is put down the toilet seat or say please and thank you, which he does not do. This to me is the bear minimum as they made me and corrected me way more. My cousin every few years is sent by my aunt to my grandparents for about a month. So my grandparents took us to go see my great grandmother, who was 98 at the time and not doing to well, and other family who lives in that area. My cousin insisted of spending time with his 98 year old grandma was on his phone and ignoring everyone as he was to glued to his phone. What makes it worse was that he was on call with many of his friends who were on top volume because he didn’t have headphones. My grandparents saw this and said nothing. I know for sure that me or my sister did this we would be yelled at my my grandparents. I also should probably say that with almost all his meals or every time we eat he is on his phone, when we went to a drive through safari he was on his phone. Not to mention when we were at this drive through safari he had no animals on his side so my grandma literally jumped to the back of the car so he could be in the front and see the animals, only for him to get bored and go on his phone. I know this seems like a rant but this is important to the story. Now we were all having dinner, which was fried chicken and no on told me that half of it was spicy so I got some spicy chicken. I asked if they had bought spicy chicken as it cought me off guard. My grandparents asked if I wanted to switch it out for regular chicken but I told her it was fine . But my cousin opened up his big mouth and said that I should switch it and stop complaining, I never we even complained. So here’s where I might hav been the a hole, I told him I was not complaining and that he would opt be able to eat it as his spice tolerance is bad and I took a piece of the chick wand tossed it on his plate and told him to try it. He immediately throw it back and told me no. This is when my grandpa yelled at me and said do you know how rude that is to throw things. This made me mad and yelled back you know what else is rude being in the phone when you are around family you haven’t seen in a long time and especially around a great grandmother you only see every few years. My grandpa remanded silent and my cousin tried to defend himself by saying that they would have kept calling and that they were annoying him but I looked at him and told him that he could have silenced his phone and just ignored them. The rest of dinner was silent. My mom said that maybe I should have been easier on him because he was only 11 but my dad thought my grandparents needed to have that wake up call. But I don’t know, I know he is only 11 but I feel he should know better and I should know better not to throw things but I felt that was my only way to express how I felt. So AITA? Edit I put some paragraphs. Sorry they were not there before.
