Daily Airline Brief: Airlines jockey for position in DC, Boeing and Airbus need to get tough with suppliers, United and Emirates make route network changes, and Copa overcomes adversity in Q1

2024.05.17 13:01 A_N_F_18 Daily Airline Brief: Airlines jockey for position in DC, Boeing and Airbus need to get tough with suppliers, United and Emirates make route network changes, and Copa overcomes adversity in Q1

NETWORK PLANNING UPDATE

Making their return: Emirates is resuming flights to Nigeria, two years after a cash dispute caused the airline to suspend flights to the Lagos. In late 2022, Emirates claimed it had tens of millions of dollars in revenue that it could not get out of the country. At its peak, Emirates says more than $85 million was trapped in the country.

Jockeying for position: The FAA Reauthorization Act which was passed by both houses of Congress this week, created an additional 5 perimeter-exempt slots at DCA. Even though President Biden has yet to sign the bill, airlines are lining up to propose new routes. American wants to fly to San Antonio while Alaska wants to fly to San Diego. Slots like these rarely come open, so it's no surprise to see airlines already expressing interest.

🔌Pulling the plug: United will stop operating seasonal flights from LAX to Brisbane and Auckland. While many airlines have tried to pull ahead of the pack in LAX, none have yet to succeed for the most part.

FLEET UPDATE

🤞 Keeping faith: Singapore Airlines’ CEO said the airline still expects to take delivery of the 777-9 in late 2025 despite some in the industry anticipating further delays to the 777X program. The airline was originally supposed to take delivery of the aircraft in the 2021-22 fiscal year.

⛔ No more blame game: Qatar Airways’ CEO said Airbus and Boeing need to put more pressure on their suppliers in order to cut down on production delays both manufacturers are currently experiencing. This is not the first case of an airline CEO calling out these companies, and is unlikely to be the last.

LOOSE ENDS

🐕 Out of the doghouse: In March the FAA increased their oversight of United following several incidents and limited the airline from launching new routes and taking delivery of new aircraft. Most of those restrictions have now been lifted and the airline can now take delivery of new aircraft. It's not entirely clear what the nature of the FAA's oversight into United was, but evidently the airline managed to resolve the FAA's concerns in just a couple of short months.

Overcoming adversity: Copa reported Q1 2024 revenues of $893.5 million, a 3% increase YoY, driven by a rise in passenger traffic. The airline posted a net profit of $176 million, up $18 million from the previous year despite a $44 million negative impact from grounding 21 Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft in the wake of the Alaska Airlines' mid-air blowout.

2024.05.15 14:43 LazySnake7 From Under the Ice - Chapter 2

(Thanks to SpacePaladin for creating NOP)
[Previous] [First] [Next]
Memory Transcription Subject: Elder Researcher Slira of the Vyr Exploration Initiative
Date [standardised Vyr time]: Day 102/321, Year 110
I remembered when they drilled to the top of Rime.I had been studying to be a computer engineer at the time, only a single course away from graduating. My home city of Frozen Perch had been chosen for the project, something that no local really paid any mind to. Almost no one believed there was anything to find within Rime’s depths, for she didn’t have any of the gifts her Sisters did. There was no ore or soil like Stone had, no warmth or light like Glow’s magma. Even Abyss held corrupted treasures of Tide’s life which members of her Second and Third Church used with enthusiasm to survive and thrive in places were the very water would crush you to nothing.
We all knew they’d give up after drilling up for a few kilometres and Vyrkind would be content that nothing lay above our heads up Rime’s endless ice, that reality was only so big and that we had explored almost everything that exists besides for some patches within the dark deeps.
I admit, I didn’t have much passion for my career of choice. I’d likely end up as a system admin somewhere, managing networks and improving what we already had, never creating anything new because we already built everything we needed.Born too late to explore the world…
When the engineers working on the drill reported that the ice was thinning, that they were getting faint signals from beyond… curiosity and passion ignited in my soul, in the soul of nearly every vyr that lived and breathed. The drilling project went from a boring little science project only a choice few geologists and industrialists held any hope for to a global event which caught the eye of all vyrkind.
I remember lying in my nest, surrounded by pillows and swaddled in blankets while my eyes were glued to a livestream of drill’s progress. My tail was playing with a tassel of a stuffed toy, which if I remembered rightly was modelled after my first pet, a grumpy but sweet crab named Admiral Cookpot.I remember the smell of burnt squid, because my father had been cooking a meal at the time and got distracted by world events, same as me. The only sound in my room was the tideheater’s propeller whirring softly.
I was too scared to breathe, worried that if I was too loud I’d scare away the most interesting thing that had ever happened in my entire life. And when the drill finally pierced the top layer of Rime I and every Vyr caught our first sight of a world beyond our little planet. The sky a black void so unlike that of Abyss, my eyes filled with the light of thousands, millions of…
Stars.
A luminous field as beautiful as any glittering reef or magma vent, uncountable jewels and embers. I stared at them for over an hour, until the blazing personification of Glow herself arose from beneath the horizon, which I’d later learn… no, discover was our own personal star.
I knew what I’d dedicate my life to then and there. My life’s mission would be to uncover the secrets of this strange new realm beyond Rime, which scientists named and priests baptised as Space.
-][-
It has been many rotations around our star (now named Beacon) since I was a young college student. I got a degree in physics and with my computer simulations I managed to not only chart the movement of celestial bodies, but predict their movements as surely as the currents. I hadn’t intended to become one of the founding mothers of the field of Astrophysics but I was more than happy to lead the charge, to explore this new frontier as thoroughly as possible.
Now I was being invited to a meeting of some of the most important people in my country, perhaps of vyrkind. Sure, I had spoken to some of them before, but only over text or video chat. Only ever about theories and possibilities.
Now it would be in a physical location, all in one big room, still about theories but now much more tangible, life altering things. And I wasn’t going to be an advisor or a consultant. Just as some people were seen as leaders of armies, planners of cities or managing agricultural regions, I was being invited as our foremost expert on… Space.
It was funny and terrifying how one can wake up one morning and suddenly realise you are a world leader, responsible for guiding the fates of every creature you or anyone else had ever met.
As scared and nervous as I was, this was no time for imposter syndrome. I was one of the oldest, most experienced astrophysicists on the planet. Of course I was, I helped invent it dammit! I was still as passionate about Space as the day I started, because it was the first time we realised what a day was. I had worked with members of fields related to mine for so long I was practically an expert at those too, including engineering. There is no one more qualified to do this than I, Elder Researcher Slira! Vyrkind needed me!
…
Great, now I also feel nervous about being too arrogant. Still, I managed to clear some of my self-doubt and packed my bags. I had an elevator to catch.
-][-
Castle Yarshu was absolutely filled with people, busier than I’ve ever seen it before. Normally it’s just a museum, filled with old relics from the time of the last Forge Lords. Technically it’s owned by the Ka’lai Militia though and their leader has made sure to keep it well renovated. It is that very leader, General Taraksus, that has invited us all to the Castle’s massive Roundhall, filled with trophies and spoils of conquests that exist only in memory. The hall’s centre stage was covered in posts, perches and seats for the over one hundred representatives the General had invited, with boxy camera drones jetting here and there to capture the discussion for all to see.Around the hall Vyr crowded and swarmed to get a look at us, even clinging to the pillars and ceiling to see the “action”. The castle and our meeting was open to the public after all, and anyone could enter as long as occupancy allowed and they brought nothing dangerous with them besides their claws and fangs.
From my perch I spy Taraksus sitting atop the old Forge Lord’s throne, on its headrest to be precise, discussing something with a fellow general curled up on the armrest and an aide lying at the foot. The seat itself was filled with a sponge-stuffed dummy dressed to fit any monarch, albeit with a sign around its neck with a slur word written on it in a language few speak anymore.
Taraksus themself wasn’t too impressive a sight, well below the size average for females and decently above it for males. Their only ornamentation was a black stripe painted over his head to create a striking contrast as it went over their eyes, and a chain which held a few dozen metal strips, each with the name of a fallen comrade written on it. Or so I hear.
Taraksus ends his conversation and takes up a spear from a guard, the rear of which he uses to stamp the ground.
“Pipe down you lot! I’m calling this meeting to order!” Their voice pierced through the cacophony with a clarity that surprised me.
“As ridiculous as it feels to say, we’ve been contacted by aliens. You all saw the translation broadcasted live from our friends over at the VEI. Suffice to say the contents of their message to us is… concerning. I’ve already forwarded recommendations to our R&D sectors to start working on designs for military spacecraft. Certainly not something I or most anyone else here thought or hoped would ever be needed. I’m hoping that the consensus we reach here will keep that true. Before any of that however I call upon one of the most prominent members of the aforementioned VEI, Elder Slira, to clue us in on the nature of what we face and go over her team’s conclusions.”
I quickly check the notes on my portable computer which my assistant Neeran had so kindly organised for me before erecting myself on my perch.
I could feel everyone’s eyes on me, coupled with the near oppressive silence. I took a steady breath, trying to gather my courage. “You can do it Slira!” echoed a voice from the back of the hall. The chuckles that followed was evidence enough that I hadn’t imagined it, and I felt some of my fears dissipate.
“Greetings, vyr from across the world. I’ll jump right to the meat of the issue and start with an analysis of the ‘Sivkit’ that spoke to us. One of the most startling discoveries we uncovered in our investigation was the incredibly high possibility of them breathing… gas.”
I spotted the ears of more than a few vyr shoot up in shock, including those of the stout administrator of the Vrental Commune’s heartlands, Ireni.
“Gasbreathers? Surely such a thing is not possible?”
“The footage clearly indicates a lack of liquid, and the sivkit’s chest is clearly contracting and expanding in a manner that indicates breathing. We could be wrong, but likely we are looking at an organism that defies our current understanding of how complex life can develop.”
I typed away at my computer, bringing up my second point.
“Next we have their next statement, something about us being Arxur…”
A delegate I do not recognise raises a claw.
“Do we know who these Arxur are? The Sivkit seemed ready to bolt at the idea of them.”
“We currently have no information on the Arxur. All we can extrapolate is that they are another sapient alien species, that we resemble them somewhat except for our eyes and that they represent a clear threat to the Sivkit. Also, for whatever reason, the sivkit mistook us for a prey species because our eyes are on the side of our heads…”
…
“That’s… no, I don't have a way to soften that, that’s stupid as shit.”
“It’s… not scientifically correct, no. But it made them mistake us for fellow kindred among the stars, their captain even going so far to gift us translator technology.”
“Was it a mistake?” Taraksus asks, seemingly in thought. “I mean clearly they mistook us for something we are not, but is it impossible for us to be kindred?”
I understood his question, and sadly had no real answer.
“I don’t know General. The kind of friendship you describe is a two-way street, and if they are not willing then there is nothing we can do. But that does not mean we can’t do anything about it. Diplomat Zhara, your turn.”
A vyr across the stage from me straightens herself. Her body is wrapped in colourful fabrics and her various bits of jewellery show a clear love of ornamentation and precious stones.
“Thank you Elder. The Sivkit Captain promised to return at a time less than [3 weeks] away. Irrelevant of any bigger picture, he seems to care mostly about establishing relations with us and getting access to the deposits on our planetary neighbour Turqo. Whether for personal wealth or aiding his kin, who’s to say. He seems to assume we are part of a larger civilisation, likely unable to sense us underneath all the ice and mistaking our surface city for some kind of local outpost. Whatever the case may be, our diplomatic strategy is simple: lie through our fangs and trade metal.”
An uneasy murmur fills the hall.
“I know, lying may come back to bite us. But we need to be cautious, we know nothing about these aliens and if pretending to be a larger civilisation of peaceful herbivores will put them at ease then so be it. In addition my friends in the industrial sector tell me we don’t have any need for such a vast amount of heavy metals, so mining the deposit and trading the resources to the Sivkit for what they have in abundance seems good business. It will also help further the ‘small mining outpost’ facade and aid us in getting more information about who these ‘meat-eating humans’ are.”
“Excellent! We’re right on time!”
A gasp passes through the crowd. My eyes dart around and my ears swivel every which way, trying to identify the source of the shout. The crowd of onlookers to my left were making way, clearly shocked at… some new arrivals? What under Rime…?
Two vyr had entered the hall.
The first was a small male, their body wiry and covered in scars. Even the tip of their flat tale had a V-shaped chunk cut out of it. A sash of black cloth covered in white pictograms was wrapped around his chest, and attached to the sash was a broad, bladed weapon almost comically large for him. The second was a rather average female, still almost twice the size of the male. Black robes and a hood hid her form, though I noticed a pair of silver reading glasses sitting on her snout and a… by Glow, was that a fucking tome? An actual book, with thick kelp-fibre pages and bound in Nesis bark.
My brain almost refused to recognise the two, but finally sense overruled logic. The male was Krattron, and the female was Kahltrak. The highest authorities of the Second and Third Churches of the Abyss respectively.
Krattron swam up to the stage, eyes brimming with what I could only describe as maniacal glee.
“Greetings, children of Vyrkind! When do we set out to hunt the demons of Void?”
Kahltrak follows shortly behind. I would have been able to hear her sigh from the surface.
“Hello delegates. We’ve come to pledge our aid, and to discuss how we shall be dealing with our enemies.”

2024.05.14 20:21 Ill_Variation_2480 TTPD's new nickname "Female Rage: The Musical" should upset you.

Edit: If you are going to comment on the length of this post, please don't. This is not a simple snark but rather an actual critical think piece about feminism and Taylor Swift.

Introduction

Pertaining to Taylor Swift, "Female Rage" has deviated from its intended meaning after Swift debuted a new performance of The Tortured Poets Department during the Eras Tour. Now, according to Swift's use of the phrase, female rage is interpreted as public backlash against Swift's dating choices rather than as a response to the broader injustices against women and women's rights. This post examines Taylor Swift's flawed feminism, philanthropy, branding, and the controversial trademark petition for the phrase "Female Rage: The Musical". Swift's background as an entertainer, indeterminate politics, and alignment with capitalism over feminism pervades her legacy, again threatening her public tolerance as not just an individual but as a brand.

Once Upon a Female Rage...

If you were cognizant in the early 2010's, you've heard countless jabs at Taylor Swift in the media. Magazines, radio, or online. Music critics did not take her seriously as a songwriter; parents put a woman on an unrealistic pedestal as the ideal role model for their children; she dated too much and used men as lyrical fodder. No matter the story, it inevitably spread, conjoined with everyone's respective opinions, and you'd be left to wonder, "Why does everyone hate this girl so much?"
Taylor's target demographic has always been young or adolescent girls, more so when Swift herself was one. She made music that spoke to the awkward misfit, cultivating a para-social relationship with fans on MySpace, then later twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, where Taylor posted relatable vlogs showcasing the life of a homegrown American girl. Taylor had a delayed public "growing up" and, compared to her female pop contemporaries, Swift never "gratuitously sexualized her image and seems pathologically averse to controversy" (and, apparently, never even had a sip of alcohol until she turned 21). She was more than happy to spin this narrative to allude to an inherent moral superiority above other women in the industry (Better Than Revenge, heard of it?), engaging in the very slut-shaming that she herself endured (the Madonna and Whore archetypes). The victim complex arose with the need to prove Taylor as a different type of pop girl. Based upon her holy and clean image, Swift had been dubbed "a feminist's nightmare", and that "[To Swift] other girls are obstacles; undeserving enemies who steal Taylor’s soulmates with their bewitching good looks and sexual availability." Feminism and Tennessee-Christian country values don't exactly mix, it seems.
Years later, Swift befriended Lena Dunham and thus experienced white feminism osmosis, where Dunham taught Swift that real feminists defend rapists, makes insensitive jokes about rape and abortion, and prioritize all-white casts. Swift then declared herself a feminist in 2014, saying,
"Becoming friends with Lena – without her preaching to me, but just seeing why she believes what she believes, why she says what she says, why she stands for what she stands for – has made me realize that I’ve been taking a feminist stance without actually saying so."
I suppose the male-centric songwriting subject that permeates Swift's discography contained covert feminism and that we just didn't see that. Perhaps, the "Bad Blood" song and music video were written only in jest and not about poor Katy Perry, for Swift, as a feminist, would "never make it a girl fight" or tear other women down (though all Katy did was date your terrible ex-boyfriend and allegedly steal three backup dancers from your tour). In 2013, Swift said, in response to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's joke towards her serial dating, "There is a special place in hell for women who don't help other women."
There was that time in 2015 Taylor said that Nicki Minaj was "invited to any stage [she is] on" (as if Taylor expects to have access to every stage, award, and platform that Nicki might not otherwise have as a black female artist...yikes!) in response to Nicki's criticism of the white + thin VMA nominations. Later, Nicki responded with confusion, as Swift continued, "It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..". Of course, this 'beef' was 'squashed' when Nicki performed with Taylor at the VMAs, with Nicki quite literally only having 38 seconds of stage time without Taylor. Maybe all that parading around with a legion of famous white women - similar to the way Taylor might've done with her numerous 1989-era handbags - was in fact a stance against gender inequality, and that this display of "girl power" should be enough to constitute Swift as a feminist icon.
Even while Swift says that Dunham informed her feminist outlook, she dances around the exact contents of those beliefs: "what she believes, what she says, what she stands for" is not exactly insightful towards what beliefs Swift might have inherited. Taylor never broaches women's rights topics such femicide, FGM, forced pregnancy & marriage, sex trafficking, women in slavery, women's financial and political oppression, women's educational rights, women's health, or women's autonomy, so we can assume she only gives a fuck about "girls supporting girls" (whatever that fucking means).
Despite some questionable (and sometimes vindictive) behavior, Taylor as a young woman did not deserve every media lashing that she received. We cannot deny that most headlines and criticisms perpetuated a misogynistic rhetoric which has plagued Swift for a majority of her career. Acknowledging events such as the development of her ED, her sexual assault trial, "Famous" lyric and MV depiction of Taylor, and the explicit Twitter deepfakes, for example, as both disgusting and unfortunate things that happened to a young woman in Hollywood does not negate the fact that Taylor is mostly a performative feminist.

Get Your Fucking Ass Up and Be a Philanthropist, It Seems Like Nobody Wants to Be a Philanthropist These Days

In 2013, Taylor Swift cut the ribbon at the grand opening of the Taylor Swift Education Center at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. The donation amount - $4 million - was the largest individual artist gift ever donated to the Country Music Hall of Fame, which is, of course, mentioned on Swift's website. The two-story facility features three classrooms, an instrument room, and an interactive children's exhibit gallery. Swift also performed at "All for the Hall" charity shows and has donated numerous artifacts from her career (such as notable guitars, tour costumes, etc) to the museum.
This was over 11 years ago, and it is still the only notable philanthropic contribution Taylor Swift has made.
For a woman of her net worth and stature, and a woman who recognizes the difficulties for women in film and music, you would think that Taylor Swift might establish a scholarship program for women to study the arts or something. Perhaps Swift might even consider becoming a member of organizations that support female artists, or one that supports LGBTQ+ causes (since she is now proudly an ally), yet she remains superficial with her graces. Broader philanthropy, such as donating relief aid to Palestinian women or women impacted by violence and discrimination will probably never receive any financial support from Miss Swift because then she'd be using her money towards philanthropies involving anyone but white entertainers.
She even says herself in Miss Americana, "My entire moral code as a kid and now is a need to be thought of as 'good'." Well, she's certainly thought of as good, though her actions say otherwise. She's more than happy to do a vaguely altruistic song and dance for a clip-worthy interview quote and mass appeasement, then fuck off to one of her mansions on a 20 minute private jet flight, rather than actually contribute to anything pertaining to the causes she has endorsed. Yet, far too many people continue to give a woman such as her their money, time, and energy, and she hoards these resources to herself.

I Like Some of the Taylor's Songs, But What the Fuck Does She Know About Feminism?

Swift continued with her self-proclaimed feminist campaign, positioning herself as a political activist and LGBTQ+ ally in the Miss Americana documentary. The primary focus of the documentary consists of the sexual assault trial, Andrea Swift's cancer diagnosis, Taylor's ED and body dysmorphia, media scrutiny, and, largely, finally speaking up about her politics publicly, mostly her opposition to the 2018 Tennessee Republican senate candidate, Marsha Blackburn, and Blackburn's beliefs. Swift says, following a scene discussing her experience during the trial,
"I just couldn't really stop thinking about it. And I just thought to myself, next time there is any opportunity to change anything, you had better know what you stand for and what you want to say."
We must ask ourselves, though: when has Swift ever spoken up to change anything? Okay, pulling her entire catalogue from Spotify because they didn't pay their artists enough and similarly pulling her catalogue from Apple Music are changes that she leveraged due to her revenue potential and power, but they are not pertinent to the average woman's rights. Moreover, these are issues that directly impacted Taylor's income, which was enough reason for her to protest in the first place. Swift has sold the most units for a female artist in first week sales, is the first female artist with 100k monthly Spotify listeners, is the first female artist to win the Album of the Year Grammy 4 times, and is the first female artist to do X, Y, and Z, all while being inoffensive and family-friendly to boot. The actual Taylor Swift seems unwilling to compromise the brand of Taylor Swift by contributing in meaningful ways to feminist causes, especially if it is for women outside of America and Hollywood.
The reason political anthems such as "The Man" and "Only the Young" of the Lover era feel disingenuous and corporate is because, well, it is. Taylor has taken every opportunity to advance her career or public image at the expense of other women. What is truly genuine to Taylor's outlook on other women is vying for male attention, taking down female competition, and vocalizing feminist injustices only if they directly impact her and her money. Some will argue that it's satisfactory for a woman with such a huge platform to even TALK about feminism, but that just isn't enough. It's even less impressive when you candidly look at the scope of her feminist lens: "If I was the man, then I'd be THE MAN", or "I really resent the ‘Be careful, buddy, she’s going to write a song about you’ angle, because it trivialises what I do", and, of course, "We all got crowns". Feminism, but only when it happens to me. It gets worse when you look at Taylor's track record of copying other famous women and removing other female artists as potential threats to her pop prowess.
It's good for PR to align yourself with certain blanket feminist and political beliefs, therefore good for branding, therefore good for ticketing and merchandise sales, therefore good for business. And Taylor Swift is a business.
She's not a feminist. Taylor Swift is a capitalist.

I Can't Pay Those Sweatshop Workers a Livable Wage or Benefits! How Else Would I Make My Billions?

Recently, Taylor's team filed to trademark the phrase "Female Rage: The Musical" after Taylor said during Paris N1 of the Eras Tour,
"So you were the first ones to see The Tortured Poets at the Eras Tour...or as I like to call it, 'Female Rage: The Musical'."
This trademark petition was filed last week on Saturday, and news comes about just as numerous unofficial fan-made merch designs have cropped up with this phrase plastered on Fruit of the Loom basics. I'm of the opinion Swift's team motioned for a trademark so that they can send out cease & desists to all those that make knockoff merch, which disrupts potential sales for Bravado, UMG's choice merchandising company; however, since it was filed earlier, perhaps Swift has bigger plans with the bizarre use of the gendered phrase. One Swiftie referred to the phrase "female rage" as "a funny Eras Tour joke". Could it be a possible fourth version of the Eras Tour Movie? Whatever the reason, the motion to capitalize off of such a concept is disgusting, but not unsurprising, for a woman that profits on her vain feminism.
Swift, through her company, TAS Rights Managements, has also trademarked over 200 phrases, including "1989", where she owns the property rights to this calendar year on keychains, phone cases, sunglasses, stationary, bags, beverage ware, clothing, entertainment services, your subconscious, and, of course, Christmas ornaments.
The vapid consumerism in Swiftie culture is, frankly, disgusting. Bravado's sustainability statement is non-existent, the quality control is abysmal, and the materials they use are horrible. The materials, such as acrylic and polyester, are made from petrochemicals. This means they are non-renewable, shed microplastics, and are quite toxic in production. The manufacturing process to make all of those lazy-rushed Eras Tour logo graphic tees is a huge blow to environmental well-being. Apparently, though, Swifties don't give a fuck. They sell out products in seconds and either have to face the manufactured scarcity or buy from a scalper that resells for 200% of the already ridiculous retail price. This doesn't include the environmental impact of vinyl records, CD, and cassette production, of which Taylor produces many variants that sell unsustainable amounts.
If we're talking about women's rights violations, why is no one acknowledging the women that work in the inhumane sweatshop conditions that have to pump out fugly t-shirts and hats? The millions of plastic microfiber dander they are inhaling, or the toxic dyes that touch their bare skin? Are they being compensated fairly for their skilled labour and are they in safe working environments? Do these women have minimal bargaining power, and do they have authority over their worker's rights? Is Taylor Swift female raging at their injustices? Does Taylor Swift ever feels bad that her wealth was built on the backs of women of color, disadvantaged by the demands of the global economy and garment industry? Do you think she ever says a little white feminist prayer for them before she goes to sleep at night?
What's even crazier is not that Taylor herself doesn't care, it's that Swifties don't care. There CANNOT BE ethical billionaires. You only make a billion dollars if you are exploiting other human beings for capital gain. Based on public perception of the possible "Female Rage: The Musical" trademark, it seems like Swifties are already asking for merch with this phrase. "If Taylor made it, I'd buy it." Oh, cool. So not only do you champion Miss Swift's avarice and billionaire status, but you also are unashamed to admit to your blind consumption of her music and merchandise, no matter where they might originate in production or sincerity. Just as Swift takes and takes and takes, Swifties' consumerism of Taylor Swift cannot be quelled.
The tortured artist's most vulnerable and sincere poetry...available now in 21 different versions!

I Am Tortured Poet, Hear Me Whinge

Look - even if Taylor's intention is to characterize TTPD as more "tortured" and "angry", the main thread of the album is "I was ghosted by my decade-long situationship with a controversial indie boy and my fucking stupid fans wrote a 'Speak Up Now' open letter prompting me to drop him" anger, which is adequately expressed in the lyrics and performances. The extent of Taylor's "female rage" on TTPD is on tracks such as "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?", which contends with relentless media scrutiny; "But Daddy I Love Him", where Swift firmly states she'll date whoever she likes no matter how "Sarahs and Hannahs" may react; and "The Albatross", a track mythologizing her reputation and the consequences of dating her. Of course, these coincide with deep psychological wounds that formed during Swift's early years in the media, and so, from her feminist perspective, these subjects tackle the misogyny and double standards that she faced.
Yet Taylor Swift still has no grounds to be claiming that TTPD best exemplifies female rage and therefore she, in the context of this album, is female rage incarnate. As the daughter of a stock broker and mutual fund marketing executive, Taylor was born into wealth and allowed privileges like trips and subsequent relocation to Nashville all so that she might get a record deal. Her father even invested at least $120,000 into the then-fledgling label, Big Machine Records, which ensured Taylor's place with Borchetta after leaving her dead-end development deal with Sony. The fact that her parents were able to buy her a fucking brand new guitar for Christmas and pay for music lessons says so much about the financial security and safety of her childhood.
Money is privilege and protection, and despite Swift's experiences with misogyny and loser boyfriends, she does not know what female rage is.
Her rage is derived from her frustrations with her obsessive fans pulling the moral superiority card on Taylor in response to her rebound with Matty Healy. That's literally it. She's just pissed that the monster she created is no longer obediant, it's become a feral, sovereign entity that depletes the world of its natural resources and thinks it is more intelligent than it actually is because it's mommy has started to talk to it with big words. Apparently, 'illicit', 'elegy', 'nonchalant', and 'precocious' are considerably big words for the oafish monster, and I find it strange that this level of literacy is present in a group of fans that allegedly have GPAs of 3.5 or higher, but I digress.
Taylor Swift has never been one paycheck away from destitution. Taylor Swift has never experienced racial discrimination. She may have instances of gender discrimination, but she possesses the ideal white, blonde American beauty standard and therefore reaps the benefits of being a conventionally attractive woman. Taylor Swift has sufficient social capital. Taylor Swift is a billionaire woman prolonging her victimhood though she, as a woman, has mostly had control over her image and music (unlike her contemporaries). Taylor Swift is NOT entitled to be championed for her "female rage", nor should she be. Taylor Swift has never even been the struggling artist, for fuck's sake. I don't give a fuck if she's trying to fill the empty lunch tables of her past. Taylor Swift purporting herself, her unpolished album, and her lukewarm feminism as a musical bleeding with female rage is asinine.

Sigh Try and Come For My Job, Poors

Out there in the world right now is a 23-year-old woman, a recent college grad, who works as a barista. She has to wake up and get ready to go into a minimum wage job because she cannot get a job in her field. She doesn't have healthcare benefits or sick time, so she has to go into work no matter how she's feeling. All day long she is berated by vicious customers and creepy men, and, exhausted from being on her feet, she knows she has to go home to her shitty roommate that never does the dishes and her roommate's shitty dog. To comfort herself, she considers getting a treat, but thinks against it when she remembers that matcha lattes cost $15 and they taste like milky dirt. She knows that she needs to buy groceries this week, and so the woman resolves to go home, but notices that her gas tank is low. She goes to put gas in the car, but the pump stops at $27.86 because that's all that she has in her checking account. The woman, bereft and reeling, sinks into the driver's seat. "Well," she thinks, her head in her hands, "at least I don't have Taylor Swift's job. I just couldn't imagine."
Fame is somewhat of a choice. If at any moment Taylor feels that she is misunderstood, misconstrued, or overwhelmed by public opinion, she can LEAVE the public eye - Lord knows she has the retirement fund and residuals to do so. In "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart", the TTPD song about meeting the demands of your career-zenith mega-tour while in the relationship trenches, Taylor ends the song by rambling,
"You know you're good when you can even do it with a broken heart...you know you're good...and I'm good, cause I'm miserable, and no one even knows!...try and come for my job."
Yeah, obviously we wouldn't know, you recently passed the billionaire threshold and are the most famous and in-demand performer in the world right now. Taylor Swift makes an estimated $10 to $13 million dollars A NIGHT on the Eras Tour. Furthermore, the Eras Tour movie grossed $261.6 million globally, (which, as the producer, Taylor takes home 57% of the ticket sales) not counting the streaming revenue from Amazon Prime Video and the estimated $75 million deal that Disney paid to have it on Disney+. We're not even considering the income from cheap plastic popcorn buckets and drink cups plastered with colored squares in her Era-specific likeness.
It's funny. Taylor Swift often said that being famous wasn't hard, that she "isn't complaining". I'm sure it is difficult to always have to present in a good mood, else you'll end up misrepresented in the media, and I'm sure it's invasive to virtually have no privacy or semblance of anonymity. Still, Taylor Swift shows up each night of tour and performs. For a majority of her career, she has penned her sad songs while on the road. Most of "Red", her breakup album, was written in the thick of the Speak Now World tour. Now, some Swifties say they almost "feel bad" for attending the Eras Tour with Swift's revelations in this song, that they have had a 'dimmed experience' upon hearing Taylor's misery whilst performing. Despite the fact that Taylor said that "this was the happiest she's ever been" at Gilette Stadium in May, the lyrics "boohoo, woe is me, smile for the cameras and make the fans happy!!!" are jarring for Eras attendees.
While Taylor Swift was making double-digit millions a night in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and feeling miserable, Ana Clara Benevides Machado passed away due to heat exposure. The concert promoters, Time For Fun, are now the subject of a criminal investigation due to their lack of adequate hydration and safety. Taylor Swift cancelled the Sunday show that was to follow and offered VIP tent tickets to Benevides Marchado's family, which was a kind gesture, but perhaps incongruous to the incident of which they were offered as consolation. Everyone grieves differently, of course, but I'm not sure attending the very show at the very same venue that my daughter or sister passed away in two days prior, where the singer CONTINUED the show despite her death, would be healthy for closure.
There was no female rage at the show as Swift never saw Benevides Machado pass out. There was no female rage towards the disregard for fans as humans while Swift elected to proceed with her Brazil tour dates despite the country being in historic heatwaves (at risk of overheatting herself). If Taylor Swift was so shaken by touring with a broken heart or a fan's passing, she wouldn't have added an additional North American leg of Eras just two months after the Matty breakup. She's brokenhearted but willing to mend the cracks with your money and move onward with her worldwide female rage induced pillaging.
No matter what happens, even if you die at a Taylor Swift concert, Taylor collects a big fat check and flies away. She doesn't know you as anything other than a conversion rate or earning potential despite what her nearly 20-year long parasocial relationship with fans might otherwise indicate. She knows that, while some Swifties are without disposable income, they feel obligated to spend on a "48 Hours Only!" exclusive vinyl variant instead of necessities because they are so entrenched in Taylor Swift's intoxicating celebrity, they'll prioritize materialistic fandom before their needs. This is good enough for her because this means she can expand her real estate portfolio and finance her cat's lavish lifestyles. They're worth an estimated $100 million dollars. Her three cats could pool their net worth and solve world hunger.
While you and I might be denied bereavement leave and barely surviving the current political and economic climate, Taylor Swift has to, instead of gets to, perform for stadiums at full attendance for three nights in a row across the globe. You and I might be replaced by AI at our longtime jobs, but Taylor Swift is threatened with losing more and more money each time you listen to a "Stolen Version" of her songs. If we don't buy every variant of all of her albums, then who is going to pay for the fucking cats?
It is tone deaf to spend as she spends and lives as she lives in this economy, but this is her reality. She was able to donate $100,000 to all of her tour truck drivers, and that's wonderful, but it leads me to wonder about the ethos of the 2020s where one woman can hoard such life-changing amounts of money. Remember in 2014 when she gave a fan $90 ($120 in today's money) to get Chipotle because she had no fucking clue how much it cost? This is a 34-year-old woman who is increasingly out of touch with the reality for working class people and women in general. Normal everyday adults must wake up and go to their thankless jobs, and yet Taylor Swift, despite all her riches, incessantly references the lows of her life and career as a public figure and entertainer to farm sympathy and drive sales. And still, the corporate women have latched onto "I cry a lot, but I am so productive! It's an art!" as their cubicle battle cry.
Do you think that, from up in her private jet, Taylor Swift gazes at the world through her poetic, tortured eyes, and thinks, "All the little people, in their cars, walking, going about their lives...all those girls that don't support girls...do they know that I've made an album about female rage?"

Conclusion/TLDR

Thank you for reading. I would love to hear your critical insights towards this entire ordeal: TTPD, the trademark, the implications of it all.
TLDR: Taylor Swift is a bad feminist and is delusional to think that the TTPD eras set exemplifies female rage at women's injustice.

2024.05.13 13:02 A_N_F_18 Daily Airline Brief: Fire hazard on the A321XLR, Flight attendant pay in the spotlight, Thai Airways and IAG have solid Q1s, and the Senate reauthorizes the FAA (Monday, May 12, 2024)

Fleet Update

🔥 Fire hazard: While the A321XLR is set to debut this summer with Iberia, the FAA expressed concerns last week over the integrity of the plane's rear fuel tank and how it would hold up in the event it is exposed to an external fire for an extended period of time. This could lead to further delays and even potentially limit the range of the aircraft.

Stretching out: Breeze’s president Tom Doxey expressed interest in a stretched version of the A220-300 to open up new route possibilities for the airline. The airline's existing A220 fleet is expected to reach 32 by the end of the year and surpass 90 by the end of 2028.

Flight attendant pay

Homelessness and food stamps: Almost one in ten flight attendants at Alaska Airlines faced some form of homelessness in the past year, according to a new poll published by their flight attendant union. Meanwhile, more than one-third of all flight attendants surveyed said they used food stamps or visited a food bank in the past year. The poll was released as flight attendants negotiate a new contract with the airline.

📝 Writing letters: American Airlines is writing letters for new flight attendants confirming that they will be making a projected base salary of around $27k per year, pre-tax. In the letter, American asks that “any courtesy you can provide would be appreciated.” While the flight attendants have been eligible for a pay raise since 2019, they have yet to reach a new deal with American.

Earnings Corner

🗺️ On the right path: Thai Airways increased passenger revenue by 10% YoY in Q1 while their operating profit fell by 15% and net profit decreased 81% YoY. The airline attributed the rise in revenue to increased demand and network expansion due to the addition of 3 A350s. They are also on track to complete their restructuring plan and emerge from bankruptcy protection by the end of the year.

🚢 Keeping the ship steady: IAG reported an operating profit of $73.3 million in Q1 of 2024, up from $9.7 million in the same period the year prior while the group reported a net loss of $4.3 million in the quarter, a marked improvement from the $93.7 million loss in Q1 2023. Overall, the group increased its ASK count (available seat kilometer) by 7% YoY with the largest capacity increase coming in Asia-Pacific.

Loose Ends

💵 It’s warranted: The US Treasury plans on selling airline stock warrants it received as part of the bailout packages given to airlines during Covid. The warrants are collectively worth an estimated $478 million, with many warrants offering rates below current airline stock trading prices.

On to the House: The Senate passed the $105 billion FAA reauthorization bill meant to increase safety across the industry, invest in infrastructure, and introduce new customer protections and rights. The House will consider the bill next week.

Hi all! 4th Wall here! I hope you are all having a wonderful day. If this is your first time here, I hope you enjoy this episode, and feel free to see where it all began!
First Previous, Next
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Cory woke to a beep on his communicator. Jacky grumbled softly beside him but did not wake as he slipped from her grasp and walked to his console. It was an alert from the night shift, it had been weeks since his mission in the K’Claram home system. Captain Collins was no longer assigned to them, but Cory had still made the descision to stalk the freighter they put a tracker on during that mission. He shadowed them deep into the up spin territory of what was once Unity space. He was deep behind enemy lines, and he was but one ship. He had made a promise, however; but up until now, the vessel he pursued seemed to be visiting exclusively heavily protected systems.

This message changed that. Their target was headed to the marsh world of the invertebrate species known as the Mauk’Lur. The Cephalopod species shared this world with a Terrestrial Snail like species, the Pli’Lur and their common last syllable had given rise to the Common name for the planet. “Lurix” had also become home to many Unity species that required higher moister environments. Siraf, K’Claram, as well as the Gecko like species Gireken all called this planet home, but it had no tactical or industrial usage that Cory could remember. What it did provide was an opportunity. Lurix circled a weak red dwarf star in a two-planet system that had become one planet in history lost. The outer planet, thought of as Luska, had been destroyed in a twist of bad luck long before most Unity races had achieved, or been gifted space travel. Her fragments had slowly expanded, englobing the small system in sensor scattering fragments, some as large as a S.O.L. It was a perfect ambush point, even if The Olyvia would have to take on a pair of escorting warships.

That was the second thing that changed. Their prey had received new handlers. This deep into “safe territory”, and transiting trough a chaotic interstellar debris field. Two frontier brigs were assigned to escort duty. If Olyvia was to take her first prize, this was to be the opportunity. Cory spent the next few hours of the early morning brushing up on the system, drafting a plan, and sending off the notification in a tight beam transmission to a predetermined set of coordinates that one of the Privateer ships was to be at all times. The coordinates were rotational, and each vessel traded out this duty. Olyvia was next on the rotation once he finished this mission.

Many Admirals would have demanded a request for permission to engage in a mission, but Admiral Grarzia was… different. Much to Cory’s chagrin, and Jacky’s amusement, “Mackenzie’s Privateers” had stuck. And Mac chose to wield his fleet very much like a loose consortium of Privateers. Cory was required to check in, and he was required to follow some basic rotations to give his crew and others both opportunity and rest. Aside from that, He merely needed to submit a location of operation and a plan. By default, all plans were approved unless a captain received a response within a standard day. This was because of the wide swath of the void that all the captains operated in. Any longer of a response time risked missed opportunities, and Mac prioritized Autonomy and swiftness of action over standardized procedure.

Cory finished his report and que’d it for the next transmission as a priority… just in time for a soft hand to brush his shoulder. Jackie slipped around his chair, sitting on his lap to face him as she kissed him good morning, “You’re up early.” She whispered.

“Hmm, good morning to you.” Cory smiled down at her. “The freighter is on the move; we have a window.”

“OH?” Jackies voice was husky, and she slowly picked at the buttons of the shirt he had thrown on to stay warm at his desk. “And that was so important you had to get out of bed?” she asked, freeing the top few buttons. She leaned in to nip at his neck and slip her hands inside his shirt. Cory felt her body heat as she fully released his shirt and pressed herself up against him.
“Hmmm” Cory mused, running light fingertips up and down her flanks. “When you ask it like this… we’ll be late for our shifts.” He rumbled back down at her, grabbing her hips to pull her closer to him.

“Then what are you waiting for” Jacky smirked, arching her back and pulling herself up to kiss him fiercely, eliciting a possessive growl from Cory as he met her lips with his.

Kar’s tail threatened to obliterate the second chair in as many days. The loss of the Vorath Cruiser… to pirates no less… threatened to land a serious blow to the alliance between His people and their Vorath Allies. He was currently in transit back to the mother world for the beginning of what the Vorath called “Phase 1”. His flag, the Thermian made Battle Cruiser named “Vengeful Maw”, was escorted by her sister ship “Blooded Claw” and three escort destroyers with names Kar did not bother remembering.

Phase 1 was claimed to be the beginning of the Thermian genetic enhancement program. Their Vorath allies were taking genetic samples of a wide swath of the Thermian population to begin designing their future. Kar was returning to give his own sample, as well as attend a few discussions regarding the war effort, and what comes after. Giving the Vorath this much control over his people’s very existence was as unsettling as it was necessary, but it would not always be so.

The shift in the Hum of the vessel broke Kar from his musings as the fleet entered the mother system, and he stepped out of his working office and took the short walk to the bridge. The desert world of his birth appeared as a distant tan dot, the second of four worlds that orbited a bright yellow star. Theirs was one of the largest systems in the Unity, and it was well defended by two full battle groups and a quintuplet of heavily armed orbital station. The Thermian admiral listened to the flurry of activity and communications as his fleet was cleared into the system. It would be another 6 hours at sub light speeds until they reached orbit. Kar settled into his seat on the bridge, preparing for the days to come.

A flash of blinding light flared through the observation windows of the bridge. Almost instantly, an alarm Klaxon blared, and a massive impact shook Kar’s flagship. Main power failed almost instantly, and a second alarm began wailing. Kar grabbed his suits controls, activating the Helmet. His suit was more advanced than the average crewman’s, loaded with Nanite Tech from their Vorath benefactors. His helmet automatically deployed and encapsulated his snout as many around him clambered to put on their helmets as the bridge began to rapidly decompress. Half of his crew got their helmets on in time, Kar was grabbed physically by the captain of the ship, and the two of them, accompanied by three other bridge crew struggled out of the bridge and down the corridor. A pair of bulkheads ruptured into fragments, scything their way through the group. The surviving helmsman had his left arm torn off before the same shard removed the captain’s head from his shoulders. Kar growled into his mic as a smaller shard embedded itself in his tail. The hall in front of them began belching flame and plasma as the stricken warship groaned beneath him, but they had reached their destination.

One of the surviving crewmen keyed in the code to the panel, activating the doors to the emergency lifeboat, and began waving the admiral in. Kar stepped through with a nod and turned to aid the last surviving member of the bridge crew just as, yet another violent secondary explosion threw him to the floor of the small escape craft. The crewman seemed to stare in shock down the hallway before slowly turning to face his commander. The young Thermian gave the admiral a crisp Thermian naval salute with one hand, and slapped the controls with the other, sealing Kar alone inside the lifeboat. Kar could only look on as the Crewman, still holding the salute, was incinerated by a wall of plasma just before the lifeboats auto launch sequence activated. Kar was thrown to the floor a second time as the explosive bolts blew, and the thrusters fired. The 15-seat escape boat, with a sole Thermian admiral inside, rocketed away as Kar stood, pressing against the portholes. Kar’s helmet deactivated in the repressurized atmosphere of the lifeboat. Through the pressure tested circular window, Kar received his first glimpses of what happened. His Flag ship was in three pieces, and he could see long curved shards protruding from at least two of those fragments. One shard, near the bridge, flickered with the half destroyed main drive thruster of a conspicuously absent destroyer. Kar let out a hiss of shock, unable to do anything but watch as the debris field slowly expanded over the next several minutes before a second flash, this one striking His flags sistership directly amidships, blinded him for a moment. The impact completely ignored its raised shields, pealing the warship apart as jets of plasma flared through widening seams. The pressure spike from the interior atmosphere being instantly heated to a plasma finished the job. It tore the hull asunder in a violent expansion of lethal confetti that sliced one of the fragments of Kar’s once flagship in two. A second shard of the Blooded Claw speared one of the surviving destroyers bow on, and the stricken vessel began a slow uncontrolled corkscrew as her main power failed, and her thrusters fluttered and flickered in asymmetric power. Kar took a few steps backward, sitting heavily on one of the seats as the lifeboat began an excruciatingly slow burn towards the nearest surviving warship.

The Thermian home system’s last planet from its star was not alone. Her unanticipated companions had drifted in under minimal power. They spent over a week there, hidden from detection as they mapped the solar winds, magnetic variances, and gravitational profiles of the system. They had been nearly discovered on three occasions during that time, but the Patrols were seen, and dodged, long before they arrived. They worked as a pair, sniper and spotter. profiles and shooting solutions were ranged, analyzed, refined, and then reanalyzed again. The Intel proved their effort unwasted, and their target appeared on schedule and location. The Thermian fleet sailed calmly into kill zone bracketed by the drones launched from the USN Kid. Her post repair upgrades had given her a few new toys to play with, including the tight beam transmitting Autonomous drones that she had used to map the system, and provide final shot telemetry.

The shot was novel, attempting to target an individual vessel at Intersolar distances instead of simply interplanetary ones, and this was the first attempt. USN Kid played spotter in the final moments before firing, feeding final calculations to her counterpart. USN Simo loosed her first round, her target half a star system away. She failed to hit her primary target, the Thermian flag ship, but instead obliterated the destroyer closest to her. The impact turned the smaller warship into a massive fragmentation grenade whose blast caused the flagship to break apart. The first shot gave the final pieces of information needed to refine the targeting solution, and Simo’s second shot struck the second battle cruiser without error.

A sturdy clunk betrayed USN Simo’s main hull’s return to battery. Her capacitors were well into the Yellow, incapable of firing a third shot; but the mission had always been two rounds. Her Captain nodded in satisfaction as the Vulkan powered down, “Secure stations, Signal The Kid. It is time.” was all he said. USN Simo, with two destroyers already painted on her hull, pivoted on her maneuvering thrusters. USN Kidd slipped into formation with her as they fired up their main drives for the burn to slipspace.
“One for the record books, sir?” The first officer asked cordially, and the Captain smiled.

“I’ll be sure to add it to the log, XO.” He mused just as the bright flare of slipspace betrayed their jump from the system.

Mac and Lyrian shared a private morning breakfast in their quarters aboard USN Wisconsin. Both had recovered from their scuffle with their unanticipated guests, but the mood was still somber. The information from Captain Hera’s first prize had shed light on the final events of their particular battle. The Vorath were obviously keeping armed squads, acting as jailers and executioners, aboard the enslaved Delmar vessels. It had become clear that upon the destruction of the two escorts, that the Vorath on the freighter had forced a self-destruct. They had murdered themselves as well as every living being upon that freighter for the sake of denying their victims freedom.

It was a gruesome reminder of the character of their foe and had hit Lyrian particularly hard. She had felt what Mac had felt when they were used as “human shields” as he called them. They had fought, bled, and nearly died to deny the enemy the satisfaction of forcing Concord to kill the freighter. It felt all for nothing, all those souls were dead anyway, forced to watch in terror down to their last moments of existence.

Mac reached over, placing a hand unobtrusively on Lyri’s leg, “A bheil thu gu math, a ghràidh (Are you well, love?)”

Lyrian smiled at his use of his old tongue, “Bidh mi, mu dheireadh thall (I will be, eventually.).” she responded, forcing herself to take another bite of food. Her appetite wasn’t in it, but now was not the time to be less than 100 percent. “Feumaidh sinn dòigh a lorg gus an sàbhaladh an ath thuras. (we must find a way to save them next time).”

Mac squeezed her leg once before returning to his own food, “nì sinn, a-nis gu bheil fios againn ... nì sinn.(We will, now that we know… we will.).” He took a bite of his toasted bread and switched back from Scott’s Gaelic. “Hera, Clint, Jake, and the rest have the reports now. We will find a way to get around it. I even sent a copy of the report to Johansen, along with the spec’s for most of the common Freighter models.”

Lyrian sighed, “I hope so. What is the word on Traveler and her prize?”

Mac swallowed a bite of food, “Traveler took very little damage, she should be exiting slip space at the library in a few weeks. We aren’t quite sure what their speed will be, and we are keeping radio silence just in case.” He picked up a mug of steaming black coffee, chuckling at the face Lyrian made as he sipped it.
She playfully scowled at him, “You know kissing you after you drink that still gives me the jitters.”

Mac said nothing, grinning as he took a second, more purposeful sip from his mug. His amused expression smoothed as a new ping rang at the console near him. He turned from their shared breakfast, opening the urgently marked file, “Looks like your brother is getting aggressive. He’s in deep.”
Lyrian pulled her chair over to his, her food forgotten, “Gods, why did he choose there. It’s a death trap…” she pulled up a duplicate of the file to her pad and began ripping it apart, “This is too risky, I don’t like it.” She flicked a portion of the file back to Mac. “They won’t be able to get out easily, I don’t think this is a good…” Lyrian looked up.

“Love, for this to work, I have to trust my captains. We must trust Cory’s decision. His Intel is credible. His plan is well thought out. and we don’t have anyone else close enough.” Mac pulled her close, resting her head on his shoulder, “I know, I know… It’s harder when it’s family. I hate it too.” Mac looked over at another beep on the console, “I take it back. I might have some backup available for Cory.”

Lyrian raised an eyebrow at the satisfaction boiling from Mac as he opened the file to share, and Mac could feel here surprised shock then stunned silence as the data that accompanied the engagement logs registered, “This cant be right…” She looked up at Mac, “Are you serious? 1.2 billion Clicks? How is that possible?”

Mac’s chuckle became a laugh, “More math than I want to think about. We won’t know if the Their admiral survived. We barely missed the direct hit on the flag ship. But considering the distance….”

Lyrian snorted loudly, “ I’m not sure what is luckier. The shot, or the admiral’s survival. Do know who the bastard that glassed the capital is yet?”

Mac shrugged, “No clue, yet.”

OK, I know I am going to offend some airline employees here, but American domestic airlines are just awful. Yes, they are somewhat better on their international flights but they simply cannot hold a candle to any of the top twenty or thirty international airlines.
I am not the absolute king of air travel, but I have flown all the big US based airlines and about fifteen of the international carriers. The experience is always better on the international carriers - nearly every time.
General Expectations
First, on most foreign carriers you can feel the higher expectations for service when you step on to the aircraft. It is usually cleaner.
The cabin crew tends to be younger, more energetic, and FAR more responsive to your questions and needs. The only foreign airlines I have flown that I would rate at or below the American level of service was Russian based Areoflot, and the Belarus Airlines. Their customer service was in the grand tradition of Soviet customer service.
I once flew a very old airliner from Minsk to Odessa on Ukraine International Airlines. The flight was so packed I am not sure if I actually saw any of the cabin crew, but I am sure that aircraft is long out of service and since then their UIA's service has been pretty good when I have flown them. It has not been Thai Airways good - not even close - but it has been as good as the very best US domestic service.
Food
Once thing you will notice on most international carriers is that the food - even in coach - is better than average and at times really good. My favorite food was probably on Thai Airways. It was spectacular, but the food on Qutar Airways is almost as good. That is over twenty or thirty flights I guess and it was all better than anything I ever had in the US even in first class.
And you simply cannot imagine how nice a good meal or maybe two on a long flight makes the whole experience. It is simply great to dig into a good meal when you are tired and bored. There are usually choices of sauces and deserts and it is just something to do.
One note: Be careful about getting too adventuresome unless that is the way you swing. Once on an Asiana flight from Seoul to SF I ordered some Western dish, but by the time they got to me they were out of that and instead gave me the most fishy fish dish I have ever tried to eat. It was awful and smelled like an old cannery. In fact, the whole plane smelled like a cannery for an hour or so.
Crowds
Many of these international carriers fly with a lot of empty seats, so if you plan it right, you can probably fly a long flight without anyone sitting next to you. I don't mind fellow travelers usually, but if I am flying from LA to Seoul or Cape Town to London - no. It is just too long to be sitting next to anyone you are not really close to.
I will write a post about this sometime, but for now take my word for it. A half empty plane is a happy plane.
The Stewardesses
For many, many, many people, including many happily married men AND women, the best thing about flying international are the stewardesses. Usually, there is an "older" supervisor who is somewhere between 27-35, and the bulk of the women, and almost all cabin crew on most airlines or still women, are between 18-27.
Yes, they are often stunning, and that's great - really great. But I like the fact that they are cheerful and energetic. In the US I almost never, ever find that on any airline. Maybe they get worked too hard, and I know it is hard job, but it is very rare to find anyone in most domestic cabin crews who look like they want to be there. And again, I know it is a hard job, but if I am making a choice I don't want to deal with someone who seems that unhappy with their job.
Oh, and most foreign stewardesses are HOT! I have a friend who actually has flown back and forth on Icelandair back and forth for no other reasons but to look at girls.
He was in a super high pressure banking job in NYC and in those days the plane was out of communication. He literally would burn a weekend flying back and forth to Europe to avoid being called into the office, and to chat up the hot blond stewardesses on Icelandair.
Thai Airways always jumps out at me, but I feel like that is unfair to the really pretty women I have seen working for Qatar, Asiana, Virgin, UAI, Asiana, Japan Airlines, Finnair, and others. The women flying for Cebu Pacific were very cute too. I know I am leaving out some airlines I should remember.
The women on Aeroflot and the Belarus carrier were beautiful, but they had cheerfulness levels as bad as any American carrier.
Conclusions
You should read reviews on any foreign airline you have never heard about. I have heard horror stories about flying inside India and China for instance.
So, what are your experiences flying on foreign airline?
Do you have a favorite? Over all Qatar Airways was probably my overall favorite. I certainly have flown them more than any other. Covid wiped out my status, and, yes, I am still in mourning.
Was I too hard on American domestic airlines? The whole industry is geared as sort of flying buses today and that makes it pretty awful.
Best Wishes!

2024.05.07 18:58 Immediate-Resort347 Mid-career engineer with CPL, looking for advice

tl;dr Mid-career aerospace engineer working in flight test now, but got my ASEL CPL on the side. Want to get CFI and/or continue building time and experience as a pilot, but with 250TT and a full time job, I'm not seeing many good opportunities to do that without quitting my job and going full time as a CFI. How do I continue building time and experience as a pilot? Quit my job and fly full time for a bit? Keep my job and build time slowly on the side? Something else?
Long version: I'm currently working as an aerospace integration engineer. Bachelor's in physics, 5+ years working on avionics software, and aerospace control systems integration and testing at several major firms. I started to burn out on my engineering career a few years ago. I felt I had done what I had wanted to do in each job, and wasn't excited for the next 40 years of my career path.
I started PPL training in high school and got through soloing before running out of money. I've known I wanted to be a pilot for as long as I can remember, but decided in high school to pursue science/engineering as a career and fly for fun one day.
I finally picked it back up after graduating college and working in industry for a bit. I thought I'd just do PPL and that's it, but I was hooked immediately and remembered how much I loved it and missed it. I finished PPL in early 2023, and got my IR a few months later. Built time on the side and got my CPL this year.
My plan was to get my CFI and just go full time as an instructor, but I took another job working for another aviation startup in system integration and flight testing, and it's been great. I've gotten to combine my aviation and engineering sides, get to work on planes on a daily basis, use my pilot skills pretty regularly to plan flight testing, and even fly right seat as a flight test engineer and test director.
I want to keep progressing as a pilot, so I am still planning to get my CFI, as I think I would actually enjoy instructing part time on the side. The problem is there aren't any flight schools near me that hire new instructors (<600 hours TT) part time. I'm at 250 TT, so I'm a ways away from those mins, especially if I'm working full time.
Being a civilian test pilot is my pie in the sky dream. I love combining engineering and flying, it's just a pure dopamine button for my brain. I know without a mil background it's still a long shot, and I'll never be flying fast tactical jets or anything (that's fine I'm happy working on much less exciting systems), but I feel my chances are non-zero with my work and education experience, especially with my current employer, but I still need way more flight experience (at least 2,000 hours probably).
So, I feel somewhat stuck - should I continue working in my job in flight testing which I really love, but defer building time and experience as a pilot? Or should I go full time as an instructor for a bit to keep progressing as a pilot, then maybe go back to engineering one day?

2024.05.03 04:01 snart_Splart_601 Info about the background for 2 Boeing whistblowrts found dead

Two is a coincidence. 3 is a pattern
Cockroaches move in the dark.
Trump signed 2 pieces of legislation that diminished oversight into Boeing during his tenure.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/marisagarcia/2019/03/18/did-trump-executive-orders-further-weaken-faa-oversight/
Nikki Haley took money to gut Q.A. at Boeing.
https://www.levernews.com/nikki-haley-helped-boeing-kill-dark-money-disclosure-initiative/
Which at face value makes little sense. But raise the lens a bit and it comes into focus. Political dark money is the death of democracy. Trump has been laundering money for the Russians (Xi’s sworn ally) since the 1980’s. The Russians have also been tampering with elections worldwide, but their operative of choice is Paul manafort who spent the 80’s in the Philippines keeping Marcos dictatorship together before shifting to Ukraine where he kept Putin’s puppet Yanukovych in power until Maidan in 2014.
(Transcripts of his daughters texts about his time in Ukraine) https://www.reddit.com/RussiaLago/s/lRbRmfgSzE

https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/06/2016-donald-trump-paul-manafort-ferinand-marcos-philippines-1980s-213952/
Coincidently trump just asked manafort to come back as his campaign manager….again.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/03/18/trump-manafort-2024-campaign/
Boeing and Airbus have a duopoly on jetliners, but the recent player 3 Chinese communist party backed COMAC 919 is now being presented as a viable alternative
https://skift.com/2024/02/25/can-chinas-new-plane-compete-with-airbus-and-boeing/#:~:text=Alongside%20regulatory%20hurdles%2C%20its%20flying,fly%20up%20to%203%2C500nm.
The timing of the 919 release earlier this year may very well be coincidence. But the CCP certainly knows that bankrupting Boeing would be good for COMACs market share and a massive CCP advantage over the west.
In the event of any future war it would also be a very strategic play to bankrupt/discredit Boeing to create supply chain issues on the military side of Boeings business as well since there is commonality of parts.
Airbus has also had documented problems with both industrial espionage and CCP influence.
https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-champion-airbus-has-deep-links-to-chinese-military-industrial-complex-report-says/
https://www.justice.gov/opa/pairbus-agrees-pay-over-39-billion-global-penalties-resolve-foreign-bribery-and-itar-case
Counterfeit parts made in China have also shown up in both Boeing and Airbus aircraft
Bloomberghttps://www.bloomberg.com › newsGhost in the Machine: How Fake Parts Infiltrated Airline Fleets
Fortunehttps://fortune.com › 2023/09/08Fake components went into 68 jet engines, including ones on Boeing 737 and Airbus ...
And that’s before you even get to the implications in the U.S. space program.
Whether it’s the executive suite at Boeing simply putting profits over safety and sustainability or a subversive act of war really makes no difference. In high likelihood the CCP just used corporate greed culture against itself.
Having it out in the light and talking about it is what makes air travel safer because people are more aware and demand accountability.
Kleptocracy feeds on apathy. Forcing the cockroaches to move in the light shows their money pathways.
If we are to the point where they are assassinating whistleblowers instead of fixing the aircraft our families our flying on, then we are self evidently much farther down the corruption path than we initially realized.
Boeing being unable to find records or documentation of the work done raises every hair on the back on my neck as a pilot, mechanic and engineer.
That is just not something that happens in aviation.
It’s time to ring the emergency bell, post guards and get to the bottom of it whichever way it leads.

2024.05.03 02:42 36_39_42 Research and newspaper articles associated with the 1933 magenta crash posted on the internet archive by Alfredo Lissoni

Hello all; I see alot of argument and misinformation being traded back and forth in the comments lately, and I've been doing my best to get ahold of an expert so I'm not so lost with these documents but that has stalled.
I elected to instead Google translate a few of the associated research and news articles posted on the internet archive by Alfredo Lissoni to demonstrate some basic facts that are claimed to be associated with the case.
The whole case DOES NOT rely solely on the documents sent in the 90s. Ive seen this so many times its gonna make my head explode. If you parrot this falsehood; you are not being intellectually rigerous and reading everything you need to read.
Find Roberto Pinnoti and friends full claims about the 1933 case here.
https://forum-termometropolitico-it.translate.goog/259673-x-files-fascisti.html?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp
No where else that I can find ties everything together like this link. If your serious about connecting claims to documents you must read the whole thing.
I'm rather certain that every newspaper I'm looking for in relation to the link above is on the archive but I'm having alot of trouble connecting a claim with a document in most cases because well, I don't speak/read Italian yet( am learning slowly)
Here's a few documents from the archive that were plainly important. I very carefully went over the Italian and English text as many times as my brain will allow so you'll have to forgive a few spelling discrepancies. In most cases I was typing the words from the newspaper word for word because of the image quality. This is not an easy task. It's no wonder that no one has done all this for free yet; because it's alot. I only did .01 percent of the work here and It's full of leads to study the actual historical side of this case.
This is not my final conclusions on the case; in fact I've gone to the beginning like this because I've already moved on a long way and connected alot of puzzle pieces in the timeframe after RS33.
This element of the case is trivial compared to the intreague and power dynamics between the germans, italian fascists, the vatican and the Americans.
A name you should look out for in the link above is Galeazzo Ciano.
My work is more focused broadly on this person because his diaries would later be coveted by Allen Dulles.
Allen Dulles personally visited Italy multiple times for these diaries and I am going to prove this action was not only because of their political importance but also because of their connection to the activities of the RS33 research. This work here ultimately has nothing to do with that element of my research; this should simply posit that the case from a historical standpoint has a real event associated with it.
Now I will say that the rest of the work must be done to independently verify the claims in the link above; but what I've seen is enough for me personally to go forward on.
I'm not claiming to have proven anything here on this post. Let's get that extremely clear because im not going to argue about it.
It's simply information.
Translated document 1
https://archive.org/details/cabinet-rs-33_20230330/page/n17/mode/1up?q=rs33
1.)Since its inception, Guglielmo Marconi was designated head of the RS/33 Cabinet, although the well-known scientist had repeatedly expressed the opinion that the astronomer Gino Cecchini should be designated in his place. Mussolini - on the advice of Giovanni Gentile - appointed Marconi, a senator with proven fascist faith, who made him a prestigious and also politically reliable element.
Marconi, however, never participated in any of the sessions of the RS/33 Cabinet which were held during his lifetime, but constantly delegated one of his collaborators who was indicated as Doctor Ruggero Costanti Cavazzani, and who was evidently a cover name for a person who was never identified.
Other members of the RS/33 Cabinet (RS stood for Special Research) were, over time and for different periods, the professors: Dallauri, Pirotta, Crocco, Debbasi, Severi, Bottazzi and Giordani; as well as Count Cozza as organizational contact and logistical link with the highest hierarchies of the regime: Mussolini, Italo Balbo, Galeazzo Ciano.
The Cabinet met a few times to discuss phenomena now called ufological and which at the time were connected to military aeronautics activities. The most widespread opinion among experts was that the unknown aircraft were prototypes of English and/or French aircraft. Only on a couple of occasions was the question openly raised whether such objects were interspace flight instruments, and the question remained essentially open. The most substantial product of the Cabinet RS/33 was a dossier of about thirty pages which examined in detail all the Italian cases from 1933 to 1940. With the outbreak of the war (10 June 1940) the Cabinet RS/33 was even more militarised, and - what is very significant - the Nazi government asked the Italian body for news, data and dossiers several times.
Cabinet RS/33 also collected some photographs of unidentified flying objects and also a short film made in the Alps on the occasion of a notable sighting. This information is obtained indirectly from other sources, since the Cabinet archive was transferred to Germany and is currently untraceable.
2.)Pirotta, Pietro Romualdo. Botanico (Pavia 1853-Roma (1936).

XIV GAETANO ArtURO Crocco - Commemoration of B. Finzi. The inaugural speech of the second course was entitled: "From anti-aircraft to the orbital base". In it he presented the idea of the multi-stage to increase the range, he outlined the problem of re-entry for manned satellites and that of refueling in space.
Among the other publications I remember the one on ÂŤPhysiological tolerance in jet missilesÂť, the Nota lincea entitled ÂŤThe temperature barrier in geodetic missilesÂť, the one on ÂŤQuestions on geodetic missilesÂť of the Mathematical and Physical Seminar of Milan. I also remember the beautiful summaries ÂŤThe foundations of astronauticsÂť, ÂŤFrom the airship to the missileÂť, ÂŤPreviews of interplanetary nauticalÂť, ÂŤThe first step towards astronauticsÂť and many others, among which the Notes are worthy of particular note lincee ÂŤ Formulations of Astronautical Mechanics Âť of 1955, that of the Pontifical Academy ÂŤ Possibilities and limits of cosmonautics Âť of 1957. His inaugural speech at the VII International Astronautical Congress in Rome in 1956 was memorable, in which, starting from the artificial satellite , ventures into sidereal exploration, making use of the theory of relativity. His proposal for a "one-year exploratory tour of Earth-Mars-Venus-Earth" is also memorable, still known today as the "Crocco mission". The most favorable time for the mission will be June 1971,
In the Note of the Papal Academy of 1957 Crocco prophesies as follows: ÂŤThe endogenous power supply of the propulsive jet is reserved for the final stage of travel, and the exogenous power supply is used to start from the earth, brake and return there. The intermediate stages will be traveled at uniform speed without consumption and the total distances that can be crossed will allow the choice of reconnaissance within a sphere containing 20,000 stars. The furthest will require 28 years of crew life to get there and back. Utopia! Âť... But, Crocco continues, ÂŤit has been said that our entire civilization blossomed from utopiaÂť.
After the flight of the first Sputnik, which realized what he had prophesied, he concluded, beyond the age of eighty, his miraculous activity as a scientist and prophet with a masterly speech at the VII International Communications Conference, held in Genoa in 1959, ÂŤ The determinants of the astronautical era", with the one held in the solemn meeting of 1960 at the Lincei "Anticipations extra-terrestrials" and with his contribution to the work "The world of technology" of 1962 "The astro-cosmonautic moment". This is a small treatise on space activity from its origins to Gagarin's flight, in which he also delves into the theory of relativity and photonic propulsion.
Finally, I recall the titles of some studies and meditations on problems that go beyond aeronautics: "Scientific property", "The degradation of wealth", "The devil and atomic research" (history of the atomic bomb), "Discourse on the gradient" (concerning the exasperated acceleration of scientific progress), ÂŤ Scientific premises for space law

11.)
11.)
From 1951 onwards, Crocco's scientific activity, now old, was aimed at outer space flight and astronautics. Already in 1923, to tell the truth, he had been ahead of his time with the Nota lincea ÂŤOn the possibility of extra-atmospheric navigationÂť, in which he proposed making use of the reaction caused by the outflow of the products of the disintegration of radioactive material. It was, essentially, ion propulsion, which has not yet been practically achieved today. In 1927 he had begun experimental research on solid propellants for rockets, in collaboration with his son Luigi, and had then resumed such research between 1932 and 1935. I would also like to point out the Note line of 1946 ÂŤ On the application of atomic energy to interplanetary navigation Âť. In the inaugural speech of the first rocketry and astronautics course, held in Rome in 1951, he spoke about geodetic missiles, dealing with propellants and the calculation of trajectories

First...Previous
Arranging to meet with the Emergall conglomerate’s president was a surprisingly difficult endeavor. I’m honestly not sure what I had been expecting when Salkim first promised to put together a parley with Jeksal, but the veritable Gordian knot’s worth of red tape far surpassed even my most pessimistic predictions. However, after signing enough legal forms to give myself carpel tunnel, I was eventually cleared by the embassy to visit Gemstone Hollow—Emergall’s capital city.
“Please be careful,” requested Vavi, interlocking her claws with my fingers as we stood at the base of Salkim’s jet. Apparently, the paperwork and waiting periods required for she or the Prime Minister to accompany me were far too extensive given our time constraints. As such, I would be boarding the aircraft alone.
“Relax!” I smiled at her, carefully tugging free my dominant hand and with it brushing aside Vavi’s head feathers. “I’m meeting with a politician, not going to war!”
“Not yet…” Vavi added, her tone’s bitterness underscoring the dangerous implications of our desperately cobbled-together plan.
Having already sworn to assist us in taking down Providence once and for all, the Emergall Conglomerate was for the time being an ally of Zyntril. That being said, persuading them to take an even greater risk in manufacturing fighters for a battle against the Irigon Empire would almost assuredly require significant negotiation on my part. I could only hope Jeksal would be willing to see reason.
Gently pulling Vavi in for a light embrace and holding for a few seconds in her arms, I kissed my alien lover goodbye and on that sappy note made my way up the stairs to Salkim’s aircraft for the long flight to Gemstone Hollow.
Under most circumstances, I’d probably have sought out some form of entertainment to keep me busy during the lonely eleven hour flight. The plane’s cabin came equipped with its own television, supplemented by row upon row of movie tapes organized by title in the cabinet beside it. I, however, was in no mood for such distractions, remaining instead at the window seat as I looked out over the clouds below and contemplated my next steps.
Emergall was first united under corporate rule roughly half a century prior to my arrival, following a long and bloody civil war the likes of which neither side came out on top. Ultimately, it was the defense company who sold weapons to the warring factions that ended up as the country’s default ruler. Once in control of the area, they branched out into the production of all manner of industrial products. Over ninety percent of the country’s population worked directly for the Conglomerate, with the remainder working for small farms or as the occasional independent contractor. The country wasn’t merely run like a business; it was a business. As such, it came as no surprise to me that they were the largest economic power on Archesa.
Having watched a three hour documentary on the Conglomerate’s history, I understood fairly well how their government functioned. Much like how nations on Earth have departments specializing in different fields, the Conglomerate has subsidiary companies; each specializing in a different industry.
Jeksal was the third President of this corporate nation, and from day one he made his motives clear. Profit was the number one factor in Emergall’s foreign policy, and their new president took this to heart when Providence approached his business to buy weapons from them. In many ways, it was his fault the situation grew to its current catastrophic proportions. Without Emergall weapons, Providence would have been defeated long ago. Now was not the time to be pointing fingers, however. Ultimately, the question of who caused the problem was immaterial to rectifying it.
With Providence’s defeat close on the horizon, the nations of Archesa would soon be open to dealing with the Irigon issue. With any luck, Emergall production would be up to the task of building a fleet to distract the Irigon whilst me and my forces crept aboard Finality to take it over.
It was aboard this aircraft that my recent lack of restful sleep would catch up to me, weighing down my eyelids and lulling me into comfortable darkness. My dream that night was strangely detailed. In it, we had succeeded in taking Finality and handing it over to Baoth, who then forced the Irigon fleet to fall back. After that, however, something strange and terrible occurred. No sooner had the Irigon left the galactic stage then did another species arise to take their place. Humanity—and myself by extension—was powerless to stop them as they enslaved the populations of Earth and Archesa. Normally, I found the dialogue of dreams to be relatively inconsequential, but nevertheless I could recall rather vividly what Baoth said when Humanity then approached him in a desperate scramble for aid.
“I’m terribly sorry, but we in the Irigon Empire do not intervene in the matters of lesser species. You have every right to defend yourselves against these people’s attack. However, they in turn have every right to annihilate you.”
Before awakening to the jolt of Salkim’s jet touching town, I saw for the briefest moment an image of Earth being held at laserpoint as another, larger Dyson sphere slowly charged up to render upon my home planet the final blow.
Shaking off the phantasm’s lingering impact, I quickly rose to my feet as a pair of armed soldiers stepped aboard the vessel and gestured for me to follow them. Seing little reason to be contrarian here, I quickly complied with their orders and allowed these soldiers to guide me down the landing ramp. Just up ahead from where Salkim’s aircraft had landed was a massive building that resembled some combination of a corporate office and a palace. This was where the conglomerate’s President awaited me.
Deeply imbibing a lungful of smog-filled air, I followed along with my armed chaperones as we entered into a comically opulent garden leading up to the front entrance. Elegantly trimmed hedges and statues wrought from gold looked upon me with curiosity as I stepped into the corporate lobby to there await my meeting with Jeksal.

2024.05.02 09:04 Forsaken-Aioli943 Global Electric Aircraft Market — Growth, Trends, and Forecast (Outlook to 2030)

Advances in technology in creating efficient business models, adoption by new market verticals to utilize drones and electric airplanes, and pressing need for more sustainable urban air mobility are considered to be the key drivers of the global electric aircraft market.
Electric aircraft need absolutely no internal combustion engine or jet propulsion system. Instead, they get their energy from electricity stored in batteries on board, then provided to the electric motor and rotors. With hybrid aircraft, batteries provide support with additional energy.
Aviation accounts for over 12% of total transportation emissions, growing at the fastest rate on the way to doubling by 2050. Further, the air travel experience is progressively deteriorating due to more flight congestion, long waiting hours, longer last-mile travel to the final destination, and a higher risk of transmission of airborne disease. Due to these issues, the various governing bodies in the aviation sector are stressing to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable aviation.
The emergence of More Electric Aircraft market (MEA) and the tremendous technological advancements in the MEA sector is aiding the transition to all electric air travel and assuring a future of all electric flight.
The electric UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) already have a good presence in the global market. Commercial drones are dominating the electric aircraft market and is expected to grow further. The growing application areas of drones are simultaneously propelling the demand for these electric UAVs. Some application areas are

Restraints to Electric Aircraft Market Growth

The batteries are often too heavy, which is an essential criterion for aircraft manufacturers: every kilogram less means more fuel efficiency. Another challenge for electric aircraft is the low power density of the batteries: they can store only three percent of the energy that is in one kilogram of jet fuel. Electrification of aviation does not mean manufacturing of electric aircraft alone, but also the development of charging infrastructure to cater to the need of electric aircraft; hence significant charging technology has to be deployed for smooth functioning of the electric aircraft fleet.

Opportunities

The growing prominence of ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) performance and rise in e-commerce are forcing the logistics sector stakeholders to invest in electric modes of transportation to reduce their carbon footprint. Electric cargo aircraft and drones can be used in the short-haul cargo segment to reduce carbon emissions and operation costs.

Rick Larsen and his friends Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell don’t want you to have water on flights (or refunds, or decent seats).
Congressional lawmakers quietly removed language from an aviation bill that would have guaranteed airplane passengers the right to drinking water on flights, according to legislative text reviewed by The Lever.
Lawmakers are also rejecting demands to set minimum seat dimensions, even as airplane seat sizes have shrunk several inches over the past four decades.
The decisions reflected in legislation governing the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) follow airlines spending nearly $5 million lobbying Congress in the first four months of the year, according to lobbying disclosures reviewed by The Lever.
In July 2023, the House of Representatives advanced an initial version of bipartisan FAA legislation requiring airlines to provide drinking water to passengers on flights longer than an hour — a basic human need that airlines currently do not legally have to fulfill, even on hours-long flights.
However, the drinking water requirement was stripped from the final version of the legislation released this week by Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.) and Rep. Rick Larsen (D-Wash.), who lead their chambers’ transportation oversight committees.
If their bill passes without changes, airline passengers will continue to have no legal right to drinking water on flights, The FAA bill, which provides funding and sets policy guidelines for the FAA for the next five years, may also make it more difficult for passengers to receive refunds for canceled or delayed flights and sidesteps setting minimum standards for seat dimensions — a topic that has irked passengers for decades.
While some airlines voluntarily offer water, many budget airlines do not, and instead charge passengers who ask for it.
“Airlines want to have the freedom to increase charges of any kind without limitation,” said Paul Hudson, president of FlyersRights, an airline passenger advocacy group. Hudson added that this lobbying approach has led to the lack of water-access standards.
“There are very few specific requirements that are imposed on airlines when it comes to customer service,” he said.
Rep. Shontel Brown (D-Ohio) introduced the drinking water provision into the House version of the FAA reauthorization deal last summer. In a statement after the legislation passed the House in July 2023, Brown said the amendment would ensure “that passengers remain healthy and hydrated on flights.”
Brown’s office did not return a request for comment from The Lever about the policy’s exclusion from the final deal.
Negotiations over the FAA deal dragged on far past its original September 2023 finalization deadline, and lawmakers leading the negotiations announced a final deal on Monday. The legislation still must pass both chambers of Congress, but lawmakers said it has bipartisan support, making significant revisions unlikely.
Although consumer rights advocates have praised some aspects of the bill — like a provision prohibiting airlines from charging fees to seat parents together with their young children — it also handed key wins to the airline industry.
The final deal, for instance, was released just days after the Department of Transportation released a new rule that would force airlines to provide automatic refunds to passengers when their flights are canceled, bypassing the often arduous process currently in place to get refunds. News of the policy brought the Biden Administration praise and drew joyous headlines.
But as The Lever reported on Monday, the FAA deal contained a provision that appeared to reject the automatic refund guarantee. A section tucked hundreds of pages into the legislation noted that consumers were owed a refund if their flight was canceled or significantly delayed — but that they had to provide the airline written or electronic notice to get one, essentially putting the onus back on the consumer.
The language was potentially a win for the airline industry, which strongly opposed the new automatic refund rules from the Transportation Department when they were announced. Trade groups for the airlines are already citing the language in the bill to argue that the automatic refund rule should be overturned.
The absence of any standard around drinking water is another win for the industry. Currently, airlines are only required to provide passengers with water when there is a tarmac delay of more than two hours, but not on a cross-country flight, contrary to recommendations by the Aerospace Medical Association, which suggests passengers “drink about 8 ounces of water each hour.”
The reauthorization bill was a key focus for airline lobbying efforts in Washington. Airlines for America — a trade association representing Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, Southwest, and other top airlines in the country — paid five different lobbying firms to sway lawmakers on the reauthorization bill, and other topics, federal disclosures show.
So far this year, Airlines for America spent more than $1.4 million lobbying Congress, the Transportation Department, the FAA, and other regulators on the FAA Reauthorization bill, among other topics.
Dozens of individual airlines — including Delta, United, and JetBlue — also lobbied this year on the legislation and other matters.
“A Long Saga Of Resistance”
Congress also balked at establishing guidelines for minimum airplane seat dimensions in the current legislation, an irksome topic for many passengers as seats have slowly shrunk over the past few decades. Today, seats on the top domestic airlines — American, Delta, Southwest, and United — have cut passengers’ legroom by roughly two to five inches and reduced seat widths by two inches since the 1980s.
In the last FAA reauthorization bill in 2018, Congress directed the FAA to establish rules on minimum seat dimensions “that are necessary for passenger safety.” The agency issued a request for comment on a proposed rule on the subject in 2022, but a final rule has yet to be established.
Cure SMA, an advocacy organization for people with spinal muscular atrophy, lobbied on seat dimensions and other issues in 2022. In a comment letter to the FAA, the group urged the agency to consider establishing larger seat dimensions.
“Larger seat dimensions and seat pitch on aircrafts would make it safer for individuals with [spinal muscular atrophy] and the passengers around them to evacuate in an emergency,” the group wrote. “The small seat pitch creates a bottleneck during the regular deplaning process and could be very problematic in an emergency, when every second matters. This can also be uncomfortable for the passenger with a disability and the other passengers in the row.”
The group also said that the FAA and airlines need to more thoroughly consider the needs of passengers with wheelchairs.
But airline groups have lobbied against any attempt to improve standards for airplane seats. Airlines for America has spent more than $7.2 million lobbying on seat dimensions and other issues since 2023, disclosures show.
Airlines for America and the International Air Transport Association — an industry group representing more than 300 airlines — wrote to the FAA in 2022 urging the regulator not to establish minimum standards for seats.
“We respectfully disagree with the underlying premise that a rulemaking is required, as Congress stated the FAA shall only issue regulations that establish minimum dimensions for passenger seats that are ‘necessary for the safety of passengers,’” the groups wrote in 2022. “The FAA has done and continues to conduct extensive review and research on evacuation standards, and there is no factual or data predicate that supports promulgating additional rules concerning aircraft seat dimensions.”
The FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 directs the FAA to initiate a “rulemaking activity, on minimum seat sizes but does not require the agency to establish a rule on the matter.
“If the Administrator decides not to pursue the rulemaking… the Administrator shall brief appropriate committees of Congress on the justification of such decision,” the proposed bill states.
Hudson with FlyersRights has been advocating for larger seats since 2015 and sued the FAA in 2022 seeking to force the agency to set minimum dimensions. A Washington, D.C.-based circuit court judge ruled that FlyersRights failed to establish a clear connection between small seats and adverse health effects, such as blood clots. Hudson said he asked Congress to eliminate ambiguities around setting minimum seat standards in the 2024 FAA reauthorization bill, but Congress failed to provide clarity.
“Instead [Congress] simply put another provision in asking the FAA to take another look at this, and if they didn’t like it, to report to Congress why they didn’t do anything with seat standards,” Hudson said. “It’s been a long saga of resistance by the FAA and the airlines to have any kind of seat standards.”

2024.05.01 15:58 BennyParler84 Privacy doors in business class

Here's a breakdown of which airlines offer privacy doors in their business class and first class cabins.

First Class

  1. Emirates - Their newest Boeing 777s and some Airbus A380s feature first class suites with privacy doors that go from floor to ceiling.
  2. Singapore Airlines - Offers private suites on their Airbus A380s, which include sliding doors and separate beds alongside the seat.
  3. Etihad Airways - The "First Apartment" on their A380s has a privacy door, a separate reclining lounge seat and a full-length bed.
  4. Garuda Indonesia - Features private suites with sliding doors on some of their aircraft.

Business Class

  1. Delta Air Lines - Their Delta One suites on the Airbus A350, A330-900neo, and some Boeing 767-400ERs have a full-height privacy door.
  2. Qatar Airways - Offers the Qsuite, which includes a sliding privacy door on Boeing 777s and Airbus A350s.
  3. British Airways - Their Club Suite, available on their Airbus A350s, Boeing 787-10s, and retrofitted Boeing 777s, includes a privacy door.
  4. Virgin Atlantic - The Upper Class suite on their Airbus A350-1000 features a privacy door.
To note...
British Airways. A lack of privacy doors was one of the biggest complaints of British Airways transatlantic passengers, but not anymore. The revamped Club Suite seats feature a sliding privacy door that forms a fully enclosed pod. Some passengers have even compared the experience to a “mini hotel room.” As for the passengers in the middle row flying solo, they can use an extendable divider to create an entirely private space.
Air France. In 2022, Air France debuted a new business-class seat with sliding privacy doors on a flight from Paris to New York.
American Airlines. American Airlines is expected to introduce new, closed-door business-class suites with the launch of the Airbus A321XLR in 2024. These innovative airplanes will operate thin routes to major European destinations.

Nerd Review Ep 2 – Macbeth

Macbeth

Hello again! I recently posted a 10 Show Review that was received reasonably well, so I figured it was worth taking the time to write another review. I genuinely appreciate everyone’s comments and the discussions the ensued in the previous post!
This is a single show review, with “Review Structure” and “Context” sections included below in hopes of providing a more meaningful review to you. Reader be warned that I am not using the spoiler tags at all on this review, since this story is over 400 years old.
As an aside, the title of this post was inspired by DemandingProvider, specifically this comment. I still smile reading that comment. Thank you.
Impression: I suspect that any fan of Shakespeare would greatly enjoy this show. As with nearly all Shakespear Theatre Company productions I’ve attended, this was production was near perfection. It should be noted that this show was not held at either of the usual STC spaces in downtown Washington D.C. (Klein Theatre and Harman Hall); more on this in the “Set & Props” section below. This was an amazingly immersive experience that I feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced.
Watch check: 0 times
See again: Yes, I would absolutely see this show again. However, it is effectively sold out and I do not have another trip planned to D.C. during the remainder of the show’s run. If you are lucky enough to have snagged a ticket you are in for quite the experience.
Music & Lyrics: This category doesn’t really apply. However, there were brief musical interludes, mostly just chord hits, that helped to set tone of some scenes. The limited music added significantly to the show vibe.
Story & Book: There is nothing I can add to the analysis of the story itself, given that it was published in the early 1600s. Instead, I am going to use this section to highlight a few of my favorite scenes.
I particularly enjoyed the banquet scene in Act III. Ralph gave a masterful performance in his reaction to the appearance of Banquo’s Ghost, as well as the aftermath. I have seen Ralph in several movies over the years, but none show his skills as a performer as much as this scene does.
The other scene that stood out was the fight between Macbeth and Macduff in Act V. I’ll cover this more in the “Movement” section below.
Set & Props: Buckle up, since this section is significantly larger than would be for almost any show I can imagine. Let’s begin with some context. I learned after the show from program that Ralph made two requests for this production. Here is a direct quote from the program text, “First, it should be experienced outside the normative realms of the theatre, in industrial spaces lying on the outskirts of cities such as Liverpool, Edinburgh, London, and Washington D.C. And secondarily, the production should create a sense of intimacy, bringing the audience into the ‘cocoon’ of Macbeth’s mind.”
While I knew the show would not be at the usual STC theaters, I was not at all prepared for the journey to the space of this production. I took the Red line to the Rhode Island Avenue-Brentwood Station, and there a luxurious shuttle bus was waiting to pick up ticket holders. From there things got a little weird. The area right by the Metro stop is quite nice, with modern apartments, condos, and shops, but a short distance away it becomes quite industrial and rundown. This was my view turning on to W Street, just a few blocks from the venue:
https://preview.redd.it/erftoqxbwqxc1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=727e77d348921fdfe556aa100c78e719889c0acc
Perhaps it is just me, but this decrepit industrial area felt like something out of a post-apocalyptic zombie movie or some sort of murder mystery. A bit unsettling….
The shuttle dropped us off at the front of a warehouse looking building. I later learned that this was formerly a soundstage for BET Studios. On site there were a number of food trucks that offered some exceptional choices.
https://preview.redd.it/es979r5dwqxc1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f89528691df3772158896d9a5b1ef744e4b7b440
Once the doors opened to the facility, ticket holders were allowed to roam in a lobby-like area. It felt very industrial, and it was clear that significant effort was put into the look and feel of the space. I particularly enjoyed looking at the lighting design throughout that space.
https://preview.redd.it/ha6edsydwqxc1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dbf8f004f03e2e35b40491879d0ae6dad049cf56
When the doors to the theatre were finally opened, I was surprised to find a life-sized diorama of what appeared to be a warzone. The lighting design was intense and there were sound effects encompassing the space, such as fighter jets flying overhead. I spent significant time exploring this space during the intermission. Clearly an immense amount of effort was spent to create a space that wasn’t even used during the show itself.
https://preview.redd.it/th075s6gwqxc1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f27de3f28b6dbbd832fcf482129510debe4134c9
Finally, I made my way to my seat. The photo below does not do the set or lighting justice. This image was taken during intermission, just before the banquet scene. The lower portion of the steps extended outward in the later part of the show, and not illuminated are the lighting effects around the doorways. An interesting note about intermission, I recall 4 stagehands cleaning up the fake blood from the first half of the show.
https://preview.redd.it/gfn6pn3hwqxc1.jpg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b6c27270d29919a99d37a6ad0f1b51c7551e5447
Undoubtedly the production met the stated goal of a uniquely immersive show. I have never experienced a production quite like this one, thanks to significant planning, cost, and execution of a production that excursed far from a traditional theatre space, both physically and metaphorically.
Costumes & Makeup: The costumes were modern and fit well with the overall ambiance. I have no specific notes captured for this category.
Movement: The entire space was utilized, including multiple character appearances throughout the theater aisles. The multi-level stage was also used effectively to mark the stage feel bigger than it actually was.
As noted above in the “Story” section, I very much enjoyed the intense fight near the end of the show. Both Ralph and Ben were fully committed to the choreography. Rarely do I get a feeling of danger in staged fights, but this was an unqualified exception. Both men wielded what appeared to be machetes, and there were times during the fight where sparks exploded from the forceful contact of the blades.
Tech: I cannot stress enough how much the lighting and sound designs added to this experience. The sound effects were used sparingly, but impactful. The mix was near perfection, with perfect clarity in the actor’s speech. The lighting design is some of the best I’ve seen in a Shakespeare production. None of it was flashy, but instead in the perfect dose to tie the entire production together.
Cast: I believe much of the cast transferred from the UK production. The cast was great all around. Here are a few of the notable standouts (in no particular order):
  • Indira Varma (Lady Macbeth) – I was thoroughly impressed by Indira’s performance. She exuded confidence and motivation for her husband to seize power.
  • Ralph Fiennes (Macbeth) – I am not able to put into words how much I enjoyed Ralph’s performance. Perhaps a once in a lifetime opportunity to see such a talented actor in a live production.
  • Ben Turner (Macduff) – Ben’s portrayal of Macduff was intense and vulnerable at times. I felt his skills shined above others in the cast.
  • Lucy Mangan (First Witch) – Lucy’s performance as a Witch pulled me into the show from the beginning.
Seating: The production occurred on the thrust stage, so truly there wasn’t a bad seat in the house.

Review Structure

I am systematic in my approach to assessing shows; if this is not already apparent it will become so shortly. During a performance I am in the moment, but at intermission and after the show I often write down an outline of my thoughts. Typically, I’ve used these notes to help me re-experience the shows long after the curtain call, but now these notes are the base material for the review in this post.
Each review is divided into categories, and each category is described below. I am a bit of a theater tech nerd, so don’t be surprised if those topics are emphasized compared to most reviews in Broadway (though I am not an expert and welcome corrections from the true experts here).
Show Name & Link: The name of the show with link to the show’s playbill.com page (if applicable) for quick access to cast, schedule, and host theater information.
Impression: This is a summary of my overall thoughts on the show.
Watch check: This is the number of times I felt compelled to check my watch during the show (don’t worry there is no backlight to distract/annoy others if I were to actually look at my watch). If the show drags or is uninteresting, I usually shift my attention to other things like tech or costumes, but eventually my brain subconsciously gravitates toward wanting to know the time. I've found this to be a reliable indicator for how engaging the show is for me. An engaging show is “0 times”, and a dragging/rough/bad show could be “6 times” or more.
See again: This section describes whether I would see the show again and how much I might be willing to spend on another ticket. However, this isn't always an indicator of show quality, since I tend to only want to see heavy topic shows just once, no matter how good it may be (e.g., Parade).
Music & Lyrics: This covers the music, lyrics, orchestra, and conductor of the show. There is overlap with the next category for sung-through shows.
Story & Book: This covers the dialog and story of the show. Comments about a show dragging will usually appear here, if applicable.
Set & Props: The category is focused on the set components, lifts, rigging, turntables, stage wagons, drops, curtains, props, and puppets. There is often overlap with the “Tech” and “Movement” categories.
Costumes & Makeup: Here I would cover anything notable about what is worn on stage. Some shows have extravagant makeups/costumes and other shows do not. Both are okay, as long is it all fits the show vibe.
Movement: This section covers blocking, choreography, acrobatics, and scene transitions. Transitions can do overlap with the “Tech” section.
Tech: This covers tech aspects including lighting, sound, projection, displays, video, etc. One aspect I am likely to comment on here are missed mic queues (i.e., a performer’s mic was not unmuted in time, or less commonly left open too long). Few things take me out of a show faster than quite/undiscernible dialog or having the sound level jump mid-note.
Cast: This category covers the cast of the show. There will usually be a general comment about the overall cast, and then several cast members or roles will be specifically called out as being notable, for better or worse. Standouts here could be anyone that caught my attention, from Broadway royalty to the smallest ensemble role.
Seating: This is an attempt at indicating how "bad" partial view seating may be for the show. Sometimes I see shows from partial view seats, sometimes I pay for a prime center orchestra seat (and everything in between). Either way view restrictions can be roughly assessed based on where the action occurs on stage. My goal is to assist those that are on the fence about the potential drawbacks of typical rush, lottery, and TDF tickets.

Context

Approach: Since theater is subjective, like any art form, my goal is that by providing context my reviews might have increased meaning. If your likes and dislikes align with mine then perhaps what I write may help you decide between shows to see, for example. If your tastes are drastically different than mine my hope is that I do not mislead you into thinking you’ll like a show that you ultimately do not.
About me: I am a theater enthusiast, attending shows from world renowned stages on Broadway, the West End, and the Sydney Opera House, but also touring shows, regional productions, and community theater. Musicals are my thing, but I also appreciate plays and operas. Many years ago, I did have amateur time on stage in plays, musicals, and one-acts. Later, I worked semi-professionally back-of-house as a stagehand, spotlight op, lighting designer, and sound/light board op for more shows than I can remember. However, my longtime profession since that time has essentially nothing to do with theater. Also, I do not live near the east coast but am fortunate to travel frequently to keep up with most new Broadway shows, as well as a non-trivial number of the productions in the Washington DC area.
Shows I love: This is a list of shows I’ve seen in the past few years that are standouts; the intent is not to gloat about all the great performances I’ve seen, but instead to give a rounded impression of the types of shows I gravitate towards. If this list does not resonate with you, my reviews may be of lesser value to you. All shows listed are the most recent Broadway production unless otherwise noted.
Shows I don’t love: These are shows I’ve seen in the past few years that I did not particularly enjoy, for a number of different reasons. For reference I have never left a show before its conclusion even if I didn’t like it. These shows are not necessarily bad and, in most cases, they just don’t align with my theatrical preferences. If this happens to be a list of your favorite productions, it is probably best to save your time and stop reading this post now.

2024.04.29 22:34 HughEhhoule Bait Dog

“Get the fuck out of my house with this ‘ old country’ shit Sylvia, I’m serious. “ I hear my dad say from the kitchen downstairs.
“I give children and idiots three warnings. That’s your first. “ It takes me a second to recognize my aunt’s voice. I’ve only met her a handful of times, and it’s nearly 2am.
“Syl, he’s right, this is crazy. I’m Roma, I’m proud, but your part of the family, and mine are two separate things. “ My mom interjects. Her voice is calm and level.
I woke up about half way through whatever is going on, and I’m fuzzy on the details, but everyone involved is three kinds of pissed.
“So you say, but just because you ignore the other side, doesn’t mean the other side ignores you. “ Aunt Syl replies, I could never quite place her accent, but it makes her statement all the more sinister.
“Might as well make that the family motto.
Syl, there are a couple dozen other kids Nikolas’ age in the family. Half of which are already hip deep in whatever is going on nowadays, you don’t need him. “ Mom isn’t pleading, but I can hear she’s worried.
“Why are we trying to reason with your crazy aunt? Time to go Syl. “ My dad isn’t worried, he’s angry.
“That’s two. “ Aunt Sylvia replies.
I hear a chair squeak then fall to the floor.
“That’s three. “ Sylvia says, her voice is cold, and I swear I could almost hear an echo.
I can hear my dad start to quietly cough, he sounds like he’s trying to talk but can’t. My heart starts to race, I don’t understand what’s going on, but I know it’s bad.
“Syl! Jesus Christ, that’s my husband. “ Mom sounds more offended than scared now. I wish I could say the same.
I stand next to my cracked door, fear beginning to take hold.
I can hear my dad start to take long wheezing breaths, I have no idea if this is a good or bad thing.
“Happy?
Now that any hope of doing this quietly is over, Nikolas and I have a long drive ahead of us. He’s 16, he has a license, yes? “ I hear Sylvia say, sudden footsteps walking up the stairs.
“No, he’s not interested in driving. You can’t take him Syl. “ my mom sounds frantic, Sylvia’s steps are measured and heavy.
“Not interested? You sure we are related? You raise soft children. “ Sylvia ends this with a dismissive laugh.
The few minutes that followed were kind of a blur, with my mom trying to convince me that I was just going to visit family, as if I didn’t just hear everything.
It's a couple hours into a long drive in a small car when my brain finally catches up to the fact that I’m awake, and going 30 miles an hour over the speed limit.
Aunt Syl sits in the driver’s seat, she’s 40 something, olive skinned with pitch-colored hair. Her style, it’s, something.
Her outfit was the middle of a Venn diagram of hippie, punk rock and carpenter. Bracelets, flannel, paisley, and enough piercings I lost count.
“Any chance of putting both hands on the wheel? “ I say, I’m mad, but I don’t even really know why.
She holds up her left arm, and I’m shocked. It’s an ancient looking blued steel prosthetic. She flexes, the clawed, almost mitten-like hand.
“Go through too many steering wheels that way. “ She says with a smirk.
“What’s going on? “ I ask, after an agonizing fifteen minutes of silence.
“You’re a big boy, so if you want the truth, I’ll give it to you. There’s a job that needs to be done, a dangerous job. And I want you to do it.
Now, I want you, not because you’re strong, or smart, or special. We have many strong, smart, special boys.
You, I want, because you’re unknown, and, little one, disposable. “ Sylvia lets this comment hang like rotten fruit.
The next hour goes in silence, at no point do I even entertain the notion this is some kind of joke. Something about this woman’s energy, about the way she carries herself, it scares the shit out of me.
We board a plane, somehow she had all of my travel documents. Even stranger is that we get escorted past the security checkpoints, into first class.
The next words I say to Sylvia are, “You have to put that out! “ as she lights up a short, yellow, hand-rolled cigarette.
She grins, taking a long drag, it smells horrible, the cheapest roughest tobacco odor I’ve encountered.
She relaxes, a cloud of thick, grey smoke forming.
I’m stunned, not a single person says anything. At first I think maybe she’s some kind of, I don’t know, mobster or something.
But that isn’t quite right. No one is looking at her in fear, no one is telling anyone else not to say anything. It’s like no one notices what she’s doing.
“How does she do this? The little boy wonders.
I don’t come offering you a thankless task Nik. I come with an opportunity. “ Sylvia says before crushing the cigarette on the arm of a chair and tossing it into the isle.
I had questions, and between the fear and the confusion I asked every one of them.
The only response she gave me was, “You’ll see when we get there. “.
She was right.
The flight lands, and after an hour or so of driving the world’s oldest pickup through the English countryside, we wind up at an old farm house, in the middle of nowhere outside of Hammersmith.
The sign outside says “ Gritt Auctions” the letters are old, bronze and tarnished, the grounds are littered with car parts, statues, and errata of every type.
Dozens, maybe even a hundred people mill about each stopping for a moment to give a suspicious look at the interloper in their midst.
Sylvia seems amused at my nervousness. I try and give the rough looking folks around me as much space as I can.
“They’re family, mostly, by blood or marriage, with a handful of lost souls and hangers on. “ She explains.
I probably should have guessed, seeing my mom’s family name on the sign, but my brain is basically nothing more than fear, anxiety and jet lag at this point.
“When do I get to know what’s going on? “ I say, waving at a cousin of some form and receive a uniquely English rude gesture in return.
My ear is ringing, and I stumble , the left side of my face burning. I’d say Syl slapped me, but it was more of a polite punch.
“Don’t whine. You’ve been stolen from your mother, treated like a dog, and judging by Robert’s attitude, rejected by your family.
I don’t want to hear whining, you angry, soft boy? “ Sylvia stops and turns toward me. I notice the people around us stop their tasks, interested in our conversation.
“No… “ I begin, not wanting to piss her off.
I don’t even see the next slap, but it puts me on my ass.
“Next one’s with the left hand.
Are you angry Nikolas? “ Sylvia looms over me like a raven.
I feel something before I get to my feet, a hot, quick flash of hatred. A context free rage at the fucked up situation I’m in.
“Answer is still no. Because to be angry, I’d have to know a God-Damned thing about what’s going on.
But my lunatic aunt just picked me up and now I’m standing in the middle of whatever the English equivalent to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre family is.
For all I know, I’m your new King. So no, I’m not angry, I’m annoyed, and maybe a bit worried my gene pool really needs some chlorine. “ I’m shocked at what I’m saying, but I see some smiles, hear a few laughs.
Sylvia’s face seems to soften slightly.
“There’s the Gritt in you. “ She says, starting to walk to an old barn.
I catch up to her as I attempt in vain to dust myself off.
Sylvia opens a small, strangely modern looking door, inside a row of lights automatically flip on.
In contrast to the rotten wood exterior, the inside of the barn looks modern, design wise it’s half way between a hospital and a car repair shop. Equipment of unknown purpose, gurneys and cages of all sizes and types surround me.
Sylvia walks to a door at the back, then pauses.
“Before I open this door, you need to understand something.
There is no fortune telling, or reading of cards here. The cloak of the traveller, the bangles of the gypsy, these are all ways of navigating the world to us. Ways to exist on the fringes of society.
The Gritt family, we trade in the unknown. We find, we collect, and we sell. And ours is no petty collection of trinkets and tools not meant for the hands of man.
Our grift, is livestock. “
The woman opens the door, and what I see, sitting, chained in one corner of the industrial cement walled cell shakes everything I thought I knew about reality.
He's six and a half feet tall, his skin a waxy yellow, and every spare inch is festooned with black stitching, rusted pieces of metal or small splinters of bone.
His face is noseless and asymmetrical, almost as if repaired or modified over and over. One eye is a small, sinister looking orb with a red pupil, the other a massive, almost reptilian thing, wildly twitching about.
He wears no shirt, but a long, grey hide Trenchcoat hangs down to his knees. I start to shake as I see it’s made from layers of stitched human skin.
He sneers at us, long, conical teeth catch the harsh halogen light.
The thing strains against the chains, but they bind him tightly enough to the wall he can barely move.
“You’re not lasting more than 4 seconds kid. Just turn the fuck around. I’ll have you slitting your wrists in the corner by nightfall. “ The thing says, it’s voice is foul, almost a physical force. Grating, rage filled, and with a lunatic edge to it that makes me question exactly how much those chains can take.
“ 3/10, Augustus, who do you think you are scaring with that limp dick of a threat? “ Sylvia says, confidently walking up to the creature.
It snaps it’s jaws with a sound like a rifle shot. No where near Sylvia, but enough to make me jump on the other side of the room.
“If I could stop being threatened and hearing my aunt talk about dicks, I’d be a huge fan. “ I say, something deep within me, pushing past the fear and lack of sleep, “And if anything feels like just telling me what’s going on instead of being vague and creepy, even better. “
The chained thing looks to me, curious. Sylvia smirks.
“Augustus is going to be forced to fight others like him until eventually he gets what’s coming to him for years of evil.
You, are going to stand next to him while he does it. “ Sylvia begins to walk away from the thing, ignoring vile threats of both the violent and carnal variety.
I try to follow her out the door and she blocks me.
“If your still sane and alive in the morning, I was right. Good luck soft boy. “ She says before closing the heavy metal door.
Without her, I feel tiny, that spark of rage is snuffed out and replaced with a cold sense of dread.
“You’re going to have to turn around sometime kid. “ The chained creature says.
I turn, slowly, resolving to make eye contact with the thing. I manage a second or two before looking away, the creature cackles, mocking me.
“Holy shit, they sent me an honest to God pussy. Whole family full of void fucked apes and they send me you?
The best part is, you don’t even get it. I can see what you’re thinking kid, I can see that tiny collection of hormones and goo you vainly call a brain going into overdrive trying to figure this out… “ Augustus starts.
The creature kept going, I don’t have an exact count but it was at least twelve hours.
I can only describe it as a verbal assault. Augustus drew from some dark wells, how it knew half of the things it did scared me as much as it’s clawed hands or, piranha-like teeth.
I lost something that night. The fears that thing drug up, the insecurities it played on, the secrets it knew, it crushed any childlike notions of safety or understanding the world I had.
Don’t take that the wrong way, I don’t mean it toughened me up. It broke any sense of confidence I had, took away any feeling of safety. That God Damned thing in the trenchcoat, changed me.
I’ve lost track of how long it’s been since I’ve slept, but I’m brought a tin plate heaped with eggs, sausage and for some twisted reason, brown beans. And realize it’s been at least a day since I’ve eaten.
I sit around an abused, graffiti carved picnic table with an eclectic combination of family I’ve never met. Syl sips a tea I can smell from ten feet away and looks at me like I’m a used car.
“I’m always right soft boy. Remember that. “ She says.
It takes a half dozen guys built like construction workers, with Sylvia following behind whispering things that wilt vegetation, to wrangle the creature into the back of an old, reinforced horse trailer.
The inside is covered in totems, runes, and other spooky looking errata. The entity becomes sluggish and disoriented as the heavy wooden doors close, and get sealed with a massive brass lock.
My mind begins to wander on the three hour trip through the back country of the UK. The sun sets, and my brain screams for sleep. That scream is silenced by the sense of mounting dread as we get closer to our destination.
We pull up to an abandoned theme restaurant, the parking lot is full, the windows are boarded, and the walls covered in graffiti. The place is huge, more the size of a small stadium than a diner.
The parking lot is full, the sputtering, sparking neon sign flashes “Faron’s Funhouse. “
It’s a few minutes outside of a town I forgot to catch the name of. We can see lights on the horizon, but there’s a feeling of wrong surrounding the building that makes them seem a million miles away.
A half dozen ‘cousins’ of mine move Augustus into a strange, almost coffin-like box made of wood, steel and glass, covered in trinkets and symbols. The thing sneers groggily from within, it’s mismatched eyes rolling in it’s skull.
I don’t hear Sylvia approach, I notice her as she smacks me in the back of the head hard enough to make my ears ring. The old, cruel woman is walking toward the doors of this meeting place.
“Eyes forward, sneer on your face, and walk like you know where you’re going. “ Are her only instructions.
For once, they’re clear and simple. What I see inside easily keeps my attention, and I’m equal parts scared and pissed off, so looking edgy and miserable is my default state.
At one point, this place was exactly what you’d think. I know you’re all expecting it to be a run down, rat infested haunted house now, but it was, stranger than that.
The place was well kept on the inside, but everything was either in use or repurposed to house the couple hundred eclectic customers milling around. In the centre, is a massive Lucite Cube, crystal clear and housing a ball pit, jungle gym and what looks to be a functional canteen, complete with a deep fryer and popcorn machine. It’s a couple hundred meters a side, and shaped like a flawed rectangle.
Smoke hangs in the air, my aunt greets old friends in a handful of different languages, I smile and nod, still trying to understand what the hell this place is.
We see Augustus being wheeled to the Lucite box, Sylvia cuts a laughing Cyrillic conversation short, and her and I make our way to the box that barely restrains the hatred and death inside.
At the other end of the Lucite Cube I see a few people dressed in blue and maroon uniforms ( if I were to guess vintage, from when this place served shitty food instead of violence.), they surround a massive, hulking, lanky thing. It’s obscured by smoke, and poor lighting, but it’s nine foot frame, and unnatural gait are clear.
The box holding Augustus sits about ten feet away from me, inside the massive cage. The front opens, my instinct is to step backward, get as much distance between me and the thing inside as possible, but instead, I’m shoved, before I can catch my balance, a workbook clad foot is in front of me.
I fall and stumble into the cage, I turn around to try and get out as fast as I can, I’m standing inches away from the creature, but I see Sylvia closing the clear, impermeable door.
It hits me then. For the first time since this ordeal started, I realize how grim things are.
Just like everyone else here, I’ve been raised on spooky shit packaged to be marketable. Little monsters, The Adams Family, Harry potter, hell let’s throw Pokemon and the like in there as it’s basically just dog fighting with a cute hat on.
And I thought what was happening to me, was somewhere on the Venn diagram of those things.
But as I see the impassive look on the face of a woman I’ve known since I was a child, ( at a distance or no.) as I’m locked in here with God knows what, I get it. I really get it.
His laughter is like an ice pick, I turn to face him, Augustus brushes himself off, casually looking around the massive arena.
“Just hit ya didn’t it, bud? “ He says, walking over to me, his steps impossibly quick, almost insect-like, “You’re not my trainer, or my wrangler, you certainly aren’t my fucking partner. “, the entity grabs my chin between two clawed fingers, “ You’re a bait dog. Something for me and that new blooded walking pun to fight over. “
My blood runs down his thumb, his grin cracks his face like a rotten melon, the monster pulls down, throwing me to the floor.
A buzzer sounds, and a three minute timer, projected in transparent red appears on the walls of the Lucite arena.
“If I’ve got to hunt you down in this shit-hole, things are going to be a lot worse for you. Stay put, bud. “ The trenchcoat clad thing says, casually walking toward the creature on the opposite side of the arena.
Closer now, I see it clearly. Inside of a pristine uniform, is a twisted attempt at the human form. The torso is lumpen, asymmetrical, but lean. It's arms nearly drag on the floor, yellow, infected looking flesh, weeping pus like a snail’s foot.
It's eyes are black caves, with just the hint of something deep within. It’s face is blank, a torn, haggard looking grey tongue runs over rotting green teeth.
The kid beside it looks around my age, he’s big though, just as confused and afraid as I am. He wears a similar uniform to the creature, but his looks, abused, torn, blood stained. Like it's been handed down from one unlucky owner to the next.
As the buzzer rings, the lanky, disgusting creature moves in a flash, tearing off the kid’s right arm and beginning to chew it.
The blood didn’t set me off, as terrible as it was. It was the three seconds between the act, and the poor kid realizing what happened that pushed me over the edge.
He started to scream, a horrible trapped animal kind of noise. He backs away from the monster beside him, gripping the crushed and torn remains of his forearm.
Augustus laughs, his trenchcoat drags on the floor, leaving a streak of blood as he walks.
“Man after my own heart.
So, I say, we split these sides of beef for two minutes then talk shop for a bit. Fuck these pretentious apes and their show. “ Augustus looks up to the massive thing. It remains impassive, gnawing on the hand.
“Don’t be like that. We both know two halves are better than one whole . Win-win for both of us“ Augustus gets a noise that sounds like an angry sewer pipe, and a dismissive wave of a long snake-like arm in response.
The thing in the trenchcoat shrugs, turning around and stalking toward me.
“You have no luck at all kid, I was going to let you go last.
But the pinworm back there wants to be a dick about things, so looks like things are getting started early. “ Augustus grins, his mouth opening shark like.
I stare down certain death, Augustus radiating fear, seeming to become more demonic with each step toward me.
From behind him, a noise.
I would have just assumed it was some part of the worm-like, filth ridden thing eating. Augustus clears up that misconception.
He turns, shaking, body language that of a wild animal.
“Was that a fucking snicker? A giggle? Are you fucking laughing at me, you literal fucking worm. “ He’s panting, hands twitching like dying insects.
He stands, inches from the other creature, dwarfed by it, teeth grinding, muscles straining.
The worm thing casually tosses the flesh bare hand toward Augustus. As it touches his coat, the arena erupts into a kind of wild, senseless, limitless violence.
It doesn’t feel like watching a fight, it’s more like a car wreck, or natural disaster. Pieces of jungle gym turn into lethal shrapnel as the blurred, filth spewing scrum destroys them.
I see the timer, 2:15. My mind starts to catch up, and I see the other kid, pale, whimpering, and trying in vain to staunch the blood spurting from his arm.
I’m running, low and likely poorly, pulling my belt from my pants, and thanking myself for actually listening when I was forced to take a first aid course for a summer job last year.
The kid is scared, he tries pushing me away, but I’m determined, and not down a couple pints of blood. I pull the belt with two hands, pull it through again and twist, it’s ugly, it’s not perfect, but the flow of blood begins to slow, then stop.
We crawl behind a prize counter, decades old candy and stuffed animals surround us as we cower. A liquid filled roar loud enough to crack the cheap glass cases fills the room.
The kid is looking rough, blood still trickling from the torn stump of his forearm. I see some plastic bags and get an idea.
I lean over to get them, and feel something strange, at first I think I pulled a muscle.
Then there is a deep, burning pain, instinctively I pull away, and turn around.
The kid is on his knees, sanity has left his eyes, a cheap hunting knife in his remaining hand he has a look of panic and determination on his face.
“We have to win. “ he says, lunging at me with the blade.
He’s slow, and I avoid it, but not by as much as I’d like. Blood runs down my back, for a moment I wonder how bad I’m hurt, but it doesn’t really matter right now.
I retreat, but the only thing keeping us from being torn apart by the whirlwind of shrapnel caused by the creatures is the counter, I can’t escape.
It's a stalemate, I’m no athlete, and the kid is built like a rugby player, but he’s missing a hand, and delirious from blood loss. I plead, I try and reason, and I dodge crazed strikes by increasingly narrow margins.
Something large, either thrown or knocked loose destroys the counter behind me. Suddenly all is chaos. I’m thrown into the kid in the uniform, plaster dust surrounds us in a grey cloud.
By the time the air clears the kid is on top of me. I have his wrist in one hand, keeping the split tip of the blade inches from my face.
The angle is too awkward, I can’t get any leverage. It’s not a stalemate, it’s a war of attrition that I’m losing.
I catch a glimpse of the two creatures. The worm thing is striking at Augustus, who stands still, limbs moving in arcing blurs deflecting the blows and tearing off chunks of foul, tainted flesh.
The tip of the knife begins to dig into my cheek. A drop of blood hits my eye.
I grab the makeshift tourniquet with a free hand and roughly yank forward. The kid on top of me screams, bloods begins to pour. Torn flesh and a gore soaked belt hit the ground.
For a moment the weight on me eases up, and I push the knife forward. But the kid, he’s too stupid or far gone to just back off. As I feel is strength start to fade, he presses himself harder.
I expect him to back off as I begin to drive the roughly sharpened back edge of the knife into his neck. But he doubles down, leaning forward, trying to press the knife toward me.
For a moment, every other fucked up thing going on around me doesn’t matter. The world is small, silent, and consists of nothing more than the image of the knife ripping away a fist sized strip from the kids neck.
He backs off when he realizes the extent of the damage. Staring at me shocked, as if just not realizing the consequences of his actions.
He dies slowly, poorly, and within inches of me. I feel no victory, no sense of being a winner, just a dark pit in the back of my mind. The loss of something that comes with taking someone’s life.
I stand, shell shocked, staring at the corpse. My safety the last thing on my mind.
The worm thing is hurt, and attempts to dive into the ball pit, but somehow, defying physics, Augustus grabs it, holding the half ton monster out with one hand.
He arcs the thing, slamming it into the floor behind him, the spray of gore and viscera rivals pyrotechnics, the force leaves a blood filled crater in the floor.
Without missing a beat Augustus starts to walk toward me, making a token effort of flicking pieces of bone and organ from himself.
I’m frozen, I know nothing I can do could stop whatever he has planned.
The creature picks up a jagged piece of lumber, and looks at the clock, “We’ve got 45 seconds of fun left kid. “ he says with a sneer.
But as he passes the counter, and sees the corpse the look of imminent violence turns into amusement.
“How’s it feel to be a child killer, bud? “, Augustus laughs, “Not that I can’t tell from the look on your face.
Fuck me, that knocked some gears loose didn’t it? “
The thing walks forward, looking me over like a collectable.
“I can’t let that go to waste, now can I? “ he slaps me lightly, “It’s going to be a fucking blast watching you break down kid, wonder what drives you nuts first, this kid being in your dreams, or the fact that, at some point I’m going to get bored and start giving you all the pain you feel you deserve? “
Of course, I made it out alive. It’d be kind of hard to have posted this if I didn’t.
But now, I sit in a dingy room in a farm house half way across the world from home. Surrounded by family and monsters, all of which seem out to get me. Being forced to risk my life in some kind of blood sport.
Maybe I’ll be back, maybe I’ll be dead by the next time I get a chance to post anything. If anyone has any help, please, post it in the comments. I’m in a dark place here and no one else seems to be on my side.
I decided to update everyone
