2024.05.21 10:48 pepitorious Container backups to PBS work but VM don't.

Hi there fam!
I have a two nodes cluster that so far is working fine. I added to the mix a Proxmox backup server (PBS) as a VM in my unraid box. I passed a share of unraid to the PBS VM.
I mounted the share in PBS with this line in /etc/fstab
backups_proxmox /mnt/backups_proxmox 9p trans=virtio,version=9p2000.L,_netdev,rw 0 0
Now I configured the PBS in the cluster and I am backing up lxc containers just fine. I can restore them and everything. So far so good.
When it comes to backing up VMs I am getting this errors:

Did I ever mention I studied cybersecurity? but never got a job
Here's an update if I did. I gave up, not pursuing it at all right now, my odds are terrible, preparing to go to college is sure to fail when you have 0 guidance. It's like dropping a coin, you have to get everything right. I did prepare, my odds were just not the best.
As time went on, there are also a lot of things I forgot.
I also lost my drive I once had to pursue this regardless of the odds. I don't have the motivation to go through inconveniences like I used to after I graduated, for example a long drive.
Part of my motivation was lost when I learned my classmates didn't get a job in the field right away. Further research taught me you are stuck at tech support or some other area in tech unless you get lucky or network to meet people. It really doesn't make sense to me that they would hire someone in tech that hasn't touched security in one or two years after entering the tech field. That person would had forgotten a lot of what they learned since they had been unable to put it into practice professionally. Maybe they would hire someone like that regardless because this world is absurd, but I just can't entertain this absurdity even if it's true. I guess that's a weakness of mine. It's also absurd that they then expect you to prove you have the skills with some project, at that point why go to college? The college did give me some projects I could put on my resume, but I think they are all meaningless because employers want to see your genuine interest in the field, instead of something that could be easily done by looking at someone else's work (which is always available with these templates)
Despite of all, I still read on security and privacy. This is something I started studying due to the concerning data breaches I had seen in schools, hospitals, and the government. There's people I met who probably think I don't know shit anymore, but I do, I just never started studying this to become the "master hacker" like some of them. They see big money in that. I knew I would have to hack, but I want to basically set up the defenses and put some protocols, study and analyze data, etc. Regardless, I still think I have some devent level of understanding in hacking and I still actively do programming, so I am not a complete blank slate, but if you don't know me I don't think you should hire me unless I proved to you that I have a skill you need.
All of this also means that there is even less to motivate me to start going all tech and do things on github here and there. I still support projects however I can, even if I suck at being timely currently. It's impossible to be timely if I want to put my full focus on this I care much more about.
Additionally, I don't even have a driver's license, but I'll get one this year. I have no one to help me get one, I neglected the importance of one until I graduated, and I basically have to spend a ton of money in lessons because no one wants to help me. I had taken lessons before, but with big time gaps because I didn't save enough money. I also had jobs that made my whole journey difficult, not bad just conflicting factors, my current job is great though. It's also possible I could have better success if I was better at interviews or if my resume was better, but to be honest there is never a point where you can say your interview or resume was at your best. There is no good answer online for that, in my research not even the hiring managers know what they want. There was a time where I thought a driver's license gave you more opportunities, it doesn't.
I wrote this mainly to just provide a clear picture of my status, because I don't think it's clear. I am basically saying "I kind of know my shit I am just not pursuing the field anymore and it's my hobby now". I always find that the time and money I wasted in this career is frustrating and it has only served as an obstacle in the present in my social life.
I'll probably delete any info I uploaded to find a job because they are actively being used to infringe in my privacy and send me spam. I always knew that but I took that sacrifice because my privacy concerns were of less priority. Every system in this world is fucked anyways, and my measures greatly minimize this infringement.

2024.05.21 01:46 Mission-compassion Endo Adjacent Experience. Looking for tips / any similar experiences

Had my ovary + fallopian tube removed in order to remove a large (10mm!) " Brenner" Cyst on my left ovary. At first they thought it was an endometrioma but noooooooo it’s a very rare Brenner Tumor. Surgery included three laparoscopic incisions as well as a "keyhole" belly button incision for a "mini-laparotomy". I have been healing OK since & I’m about 6 weeks out. I am not concerned about the laparoscopic scars I am almost certain those will heal up nicely slash they already are. My belly button however is giving me all kinds of mental/emotional issues. It reminds me of a tuft in a couch to look at. It is SO different from how it looked before. Yikes. Swollen and a scar that looks like a keloid - a large flap of skin that is red/purple protruding out. It burns sometimes and is sort of oozey with white liquid and occasionally the smallest amount t of blood. The Doctor said not to resume normal exercise for 9 whole weeks or more post surgery. (Q#1 — is this typical?) So far I have been walking a lot. My usual activities pre-surgery involved triathlon training so double work outs daily involving weights, swimming, biking, running, walking and so on and so on. Basicially just looking for ANY advice for this belly button situation. Is the pain typical? How to encourage fascia healing; how to minimize the scar; how to gently resume exercises; honest experience - will it shrink or am I destined to this tufted couch of a tummy now? Yes, I know scars show how cool we are but wow this is a major adjustment and I would love to hear advice or experience from others. P.S. pre surgery the dr said I had basically bloated to the size of a 10 week pregnant lady and I am soooooo lucky I hadn't experienced any torsion. So glad to have that thing out and that surgery was overall successful. Any resource recommendations? Castor Oil? Post Natal Stretches? I’m concerned about hernia / abdominal wall healing but I’ve read that can take 2 years for full recovery: any personal annecdotes on this? I know a 10mm cyst is kinda huge so I’m not looking for miracles just more info and realistic expectations. Sorry everyone dealing with the bloat and pain — ugh!!!! Hey everyone, I need guidance, please! I'm a Southern candidate with average stats who would LOVE to get to the East Coast, though I'm worried about defeating the Southern bias to win a spot. I have time to make actionable changes to my resume so I'd really appreciate your advice.
Mainly: how to puff up my research section as I know that is the big differentiator for these schools.
SO... What holes or concerns can you help me identify in my application?
Brief history: I graduated with dual degrees in political science/public relations (GPA 3.89) from Alabama. Worked in marketing/communications for 3 years before realizing my calling. Doing my pre-req work at UAB (ranked #35 by US News list.) I'm lucky to have this strong program in my backyard and counting on name recognition of UAB in the industry.
Eyeing: Duke, UNC, UVA, Dartmouth, Georgetown, Tufts, Vandy, Boston, Emory, etc. (welcome any recommendations)

A few things about this format I chose, I used to have Skills at the top, and then saw one of the recommended "How to make a software resume" or "what hiring manager are looking for" posts from the wiki recommend this set up with experience, projects, education, and skills, so I moved Skills to the bottom.
I'm unsure if ATS is somehow parsing my experience at my most recent job incorrectly, and if I should just list "Software Engineer" for the full duration (which technically wouldn't be inaccurate). I had that initially, then I saw something about how you want to show some growth, so I updated to show the multiple titles I held there.
I just recently added (Remote) to the location of the first job, and (early stage start-up) to the company of the third job because I was applying to a lot of remote positions that were asking if you were comfortable in a remote setting, or comfortable with start ups, and wanted to show I had already worked in those settings on the resume.
I'm applying mostly to API development jobs, which is where most of my experience lies. I'm searching for Remote and Hybris jobs in Los Angeles, or US-wide (for remote). I'm not willing to relocate at the moment as I just signed a lease a few months ago.
I was laid off on March 29th, but had known about it since November and was focusing on savings.
I'm seeking help for fine-tuning and getting either no responses, or just "We've decided not to move forward with you at this time..." canned emails.
I feel like my resume in general is pretty strong and I'm happy with it, but the results don't lie. I know its reallllly bad for Software right now, but I wonder if this format is just not working and I need to change anything, like moving Company name above Position title or something to help ATS parsing?
I could change the format to one of the templates in the wiki, I'm just unsure if I even need to and it's just how it's going for software right now.
I opted not to list my graduation date, not because it was so long ago that it would unintentionally reveal my age, but because it was so recent that I don't want people to think I'm just a new grad, and not focus on the 5 years of software experience I already have.
I often edit the skills section to highlight for what I am applying for, this is just a version where these particular skills are selected.
I know the second and third jobs I could probably update the bullet points to be a bit more WXZ/CASTAR, so I plan on making some minor edits there soon. Still, I feel like with my most recent experience, education, and projects listed, I should be getting a little bit better responses than I am, and I don't think it's those bullet points alone that is eliminating me.
A lot of the jobs I see and apply to, I feel I am a great fit for without really needed to make updates to what I have in my resume. I'm literally seeing jobs that are like, "Python API development in Flask, must have experience with Kubernetes, must have Bachelors in CS or Software Engineering, must have an AWS Cloud certification, must be comfortable with remote settings with experience in start ups...". I'm seriously shocked that I'm not getting better responses with some of the positions because it feels like on paper, and in my experience, I'm a stellar fit.

I was at Navy OCS recently but was medically disqualified. Now trying to get a normal job in my hometown. I am using the Harvard bullet-point resume template. I am looking to apply to jobs related to defense, data analyst, information technology, etc. There are several entry-level federal and defense company jobs I am eyeing on Linkedin.
The template did not include a summary section and I am unsure if that is something that I should add or not.

2024.05.20 22:16 Wt87745 i dont think i qualify for anything on my college list. I feel like my college application is lacking. What are my college chances?

Im at the end of my Junior year of Highschool and im unsure about my application and what colleges i should apply to. I still have 3 days left of the year so final semester grades arent out yet but its gonna be around a 4.1. I had a 4.103 last semester and my grades have been basically the same.
I didnt really take school too serious freshman and sophmore year which i am sorely regretting now which is why im concerned about my college chances.
For background im a 17yo Chinese American male and I live in Ohio.

Student Council: Freshman year, i knew nobody was afraid to talk at meeting and activities so i left sophmore year.

Soccer: Varisity 2, only played for Freshman year
Archery: Every year up til junior year, i dont plan on doing it for Senior year tho
For college i plan to major in Biology for 4 years and get a Bachelors, then go to DPT school because i want to become a Physical Therapist. My major probably will change since im suspicous about the stats regarding Biology however thats just a template for now.
Alright now thats out of the way let me address some of my concerns:
For one, i do actually want to get into some sort of medical job. im also more interested in science subjects like Biology than math for instance. However HON Bio and HON Chem were my worst grades. Chem im pretty sure i got around an 80% and bio is probably also in the low-mid 80s. Im pretty worried about that since im planning on being a Bio major doing medical prereqs like chemistry.
This harkens back to the "i didnt take school seriously freshman or sophmore". i didnt really try my best in these classes because i didnt really like the teachers. However if i had actually took them serious I think i wouldve gotten much better scores since i hardly studied or paid attention in class. Despite that I still have an interest in Science, i thought both Psychology and Pharmcology were both interesting but i know thats not the same thing.
Im taking a bunch of science related courses during the summer and Senior year because of the PT thing. Ill see how they go.
Second concern is my extracurriculars. I just dont think theyre enough. I havent held any real leadership positions in any of my clubs, i mainly just helped out in activities. I dont know my community service hours but its probably around 20-30 all from key club.
I quit soccer and I'm quitting archery next year due to mental health reasons. Both sports stressed me out and put me in depressions. Im planning on doing powerlifting since weightlifting has been a really great hobby ive adopted the past year. However im pretty worried that this will show a pattern of quitting since ive already quit clubs before.
Aside from that, thats basically all. For jobs, ive worked at my parents buffet but mostly only during summers. This summer i plan to get a job outside of my parents buffet.
My mom has enrolled me in a lot tutoring classes though however i dont know if that count towards anything. The online tutoring classes is offered by this company in New York City. Ive takin General Math & English classes and ACT & SAT classes. Overall the hours for that are a lot. i can probably get the exact hours easily but im pretty sure its around 200-300 hours.
All in all this is one of the biggest things im worrying about since i feel like everyone else in my class has done way more.
Third, my ACT and SAT test scores. Despite having a fuckton of online tutoring classes for the ACT i just cant get that test to click for me. This is really frustrating since after so many hours of practice ive only been able to score a 25 and a 26. The highest score ive had on a practice test was a 30. That really sucks since i was very confident in my second ACT and practiced a long time for it.
My first SAT i got a 1290 which is about equivant to a 27 on the ACT. Again not really ideal. I do find the SAT to be much easier than the ACT tho. The test i did have was like right in the middle of Finals, midterms, and Ap Tests so i didnt have much time to study. Ill try my hardest to do better on the Aug 24 SAT but that may be my last chance since the next SAT date after that is on Oct 5.
Last thing are my CCP classes. Again they are mainly an Ohio thing so out of state colleges may not accept them. My sister went out of state and most of those classes didnt get college credit .
So anyways those were all my concerns. The colleges that my sister said belong to or my "matches" catagory are the Univeristy of Pittsburgh, Ohio State, and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The ones in my "reach" catagory are Case Western, Univeristy of Michigan, and John Hopkins. Thats all i have so far.
John Hopkins and Michigan both have <20% acceptance rates so that is probably the farthest edge of the reach catagory. Case Western is probably my best, most realistic option since it has a 35% acceptance rate and its in Ohio.
All the colleges in my matches category are pretty comparable. I think Pittsburgh may be the best option since its near Carnegie Melon (my sister's college) and apprently it has a pretty large premed student-base
With that said i really dont think im even in the ballpark for any of these colleges. My SAT is a 1290, literally none of their test score ranges. As well as this i feel like all of the problems ive outline are too much to make me a candidate for any of these colleges. My sister says i have a good chance of the match colleges. She said ill probably get into Ohio state however im really not sure. My activities suck, my state test scores aren't in their ranges, Ive stopped doing a lot of clubs and sports, my volunteering hours are barely anything, most my college credit classes are CCP which may not be counted. My GPA is probably the best thing on my resume but my high school isnt the most academically prestigous high school out there. Like highest GPA in my grade is probably a 4.5 out of 125 students.
Overall, i dont know how college admissions will think. Im really unfamilar with what gets into college and what doesnt. Im not sure if i even qualify anything on my list. Could you guys please evaluate me and tell me whats my situation? Additionally what are some other colleges that i should add to my list and that im applicable for? How do i even look for colleges aside from just strolling on USNews?

Hi,
I have a Word document that I regularly use, which has a header, footer, and fields in the middle that I need to fill in multiple times a day. How can I create a button in Word that I can press to add a preformatted page with the correct formatting to the end of the current document whenever I need it?
I hope I'm explaining it correctly. Basically, I want a template that I can add as a new page whenever I want.
I tried using the macro code below, but when I press it in an empty document, it adds a first blank page with just the header and footer and no content in the main body, followed by a page with the correct formatting. I don't know what's wrong.

Hi All,
Seeing if anyone has came across this that can shed some light on what I might be doing wrong. Was tasked of publishing Office 2021 in our environment and having some troubles getting it to work properly. Here is a breakdown of whats been done:
  1. We use Citrix PVS, Created a new version, made sure KMS was selected for the vDisk
  2. Installed Office using the Office Deployment Tool with the parameters we want following Microsoft's template.
  3. After the download and Install of Office, I opened it up locally to see if any issues, nothing from what I see, Office is activated.
  4. Sealed Image and promoted vDisk version
  5. Added application in Citrix Studio, etc.
When I go to launch the application, it opens then I'm greeted with the error in the screenshot, If I hit Repair Now, app closes, session is ended. If I hit close same result.
Now here's a weird thing, If I put the vDisk in private mode and install Office and publish. It works fine?? BUT, the moment I switch back to standard mode Image and create a new version, I'm back to the same issue?? would really like to just use versioning and not swapping the image back and forth to Private mode just to make one application to work.

Attention -> This guide is highly opinionated, if you're looking for a post from a perspective from a highly experienced dev then you should probably stop reading and check out other posts. I've been working full-time for over 2 years only but I've been a part of startups in different capacities for the past 4 years, either as an intern or a contractofreelancer. Resources might be outdated but still check them out and decide accordingly, but in my opinion you should read my post since, I fall under these buckets ->
  1. NON CS and Tier 2/3/4.. College -> I had 50k+ rank in JEE and was only able to land Civil in a Tier 3 college due to home state quota, later got a circuit branch from branch upgrade.
  2. Off Campus Placement -> I had already started freelancing since culture at a company is a very very crucial to me and I loved the freelancing lifestyle this I skipped on campus placements altogether. Also due to freelancing I was making more than what all the companies who were part of our placement drive were offering.
  3. Got placed primarily due to my past experience and projects as opposed to my CP ranking -> I asked my HR why was I hired and she mentioned that it was my past experience + projects which caught their attention, of course I went through their standard selection rounds but they still preferred my profile over Tier 1 students with good coding platform ranks due to my past work experience.
  4. Consistent earning -> While someone can dismiss my current job as a fluke I've a history of making good money($20K in 6 months from scratch) through freelancing with multiple clients and was able to translate that experience into a job at a startup as well. My PPO comp was 40 base and a very sizeable portion of equity of a very fast growing startup. If we were to do the cringy CTC calculation it was a 1 CR+ job offer.

What makes someone hire a candidate?

I've interviewed over 40+ people and 4 batches of interns. Working at a startup has allowed me to be very close with recruiting process and work with recruiter with over 10+ years in premier MNCs and startups and there's a lot that goes into hiring but I think it can be put into some buckets.
Hiring for interns/freshers -> We personally don't hire for freshers roles and instead all junior devs go through our intern process but this is where the most non traditional profiles can break in tech early. I've noticed that for senior roles a lot of emphasis is given to the the companies they've worked in and which team were they a part of. Working folks might be aware that for senior roles usually the hiring manager personally have a chat before adding the candidate in interview pipeline and based on our debriefs I've noticed that institute rarely comes up but rather their work at the teams that they've been a part of takes the highest priority. Now a argument can be made that being from a Tier 1 institute allows the ability to get a headstart but a lot of folks are able to breakthrough into big tech even after working at WITCH so entering into high paying startups isn't that big of deal for them as tech profiles converge the more experienced one get. For interns and freshers a solid development and a mix of coding platforms experience should get you a job in startups with a very high probability.
To put more emphasis in why profiles matters let's take a look at a couple of profiles that I'm personally aware of ->
My friend working at a High Growth Seed Round
Highlights of his profile ->
  1. Very very low ranking Engineering College.
  2. No prior intern at a big company instead mixture of work at small startups and his own ventures.
  3. Didn't apply for a job at all since he was also happy as a freelancer but finally decided to work at a startup and got a job in flat 16 days.
  4. Comp-> 16 lpa base + seed round equity.
The best part about this friend why how deep his profile was. He has always been passionate about computers since school time and had experience in cyber security, crypto, fullstack-development,etc. As you can guess the secret of how quickly he was able to get a job was how many past experiences he had. When he started finding jobs at wellfound.com he was able to get calls from a couple of startups and he had a offer within 20 days. Wellfound was a a suprisingly good place to find jobs at small startups since my friend was able to receive a lot of calls for interview rounds.
My batchmate working at a FAANG equivalent MNC ->
  1. Same college as mine.
  2. Prior intern at a MNC but overall mid projects and a couple of development profiles and hackathons under his belt.
  3. Average codeforces profile but experience of solving a lot of questions hence able to breeze through leetcode rounds.
  4. Got a on campus placement here so didn't apply anywhere.
  5. Comp -> 20l base + ~60l in equity.
His profile is a mix of development and a lot of coding rounds but the curious case in his case was how a lot of candidates with similar profiles in coding platforms or even better were knocked out from the selection process in the system design round. His previous experience in development surely helped him here in comprehending system design case studies and hence he was able to ace this round whereas others with better coding profiles weren't able to do so.
My batchmate working at FAANG and now a high growth startup ->
  1. Same college.
  2. Prior intern at startups and deep experience in development since school which includes projects in full stack development, compilers and couple of hackathons.
  3. Better than average codeforces profile and breezes through standard OA rounds due to lots of practise.
  4. Comp -> 50+ CTC at FAANG earlier and 25l base at a startup now.
His profile is similar to the first profile but way more competitive coding experience as well. Similar deep experience in projects and very passionate about software engineering and computer science in general.
A common pattern amongst the profiles posted above and mine is development experience allowed us from low tier colleges to be able to get a job quickly. This matters a lot since you'll get calls for interview rounds doesn't matter how tough the market is though what will fluctuate is how much are these companies are offering.

All of your eggs in one basket

It's pretty easy to see how big the market for DSA and Algorithm is. Youtubers are popping left right and center, but is it worth investing all of your time in getting a great rating in Codeforces. First thing first let's make this very clear that standard interview questions are very different than competitive questions and while it is true that due to market saturation some companies have resorted to asking questions that you would see as part of codeforces rounds in their OA. This though isn't the norm and you can do fine if you're good enough for Leetcode rounds. My whole post can be described that we need to stand out from other profiles if we fall into buckets of Low ranking colleges , Non CSE branches, etc.

Resources

The following section is a collection of resources that I and my friends used during the placement process ->
  1. Roadmaps -> Roadmaps, Roadmaps, Roadmaps. Youtube is filled with didi bhaiya trying to come up with the best roadmap that they can. Honestly speaking while there's nothing wrong with that I always prefer roadmaps which are open source and updated time to time by community or the author to stay relevant. Go to roadmap.sh and pick paths. Focus more on topics rather than content, find whatever resource you can to read up on topics rather than sticking to one youtube channel. Similarly for people who might not be from a CS background the Open Source Society University is a very popular roadmap to follow.
  2. Resume -> I used the variations of the following template. Overleaf is a solid platform for creating resume in latex. Keep your resume simple and keep on iterating with what you should and shouldn't have. If you want you can always ask recruiters what they found nice in your resume and double down on expanding those sections.
  3. Freelancing Platforms -> Personally for me Upwork worked very well, I was able to get the chance of working on a lot of high paying jobs but based on what I've heard from candidates and personally managing profiles for a couple of friends the platform seems to have shifted in terms of job quality a lot. I'm noticing a lot of low quality jobs, underpaid jobs which has made it highly unlikely for new candidates to break through here. I would personally not recommend Freelancer and Fiverr since they have low quality, low paying jobs as compared to Upwork. Also fiverr follows a marketplace model so hard for non experienced folks to get discovered.
    1. If you're a experienced dev and have a solid profile and need a better platform as compared to Upwork checkout Toptal and A.team.
  4. Job Platforms -> I personally had a great experience with Cutshort since it apart from applying on jobs as a candidates also has a strong emphasis on recruiters reaching out to candidates. Apart from that I've had a good experience with LinkedIn jobs purely in terms of response times. Atleast recruiters reached out quickly even though the quality of jobs wasn't great. As mentioned above wellfound.com is also a good resource for finding startup jobs. Apart from this cold mailing recruiters should be a part of your job hunting cycle. We used to go over startups which were recently funded and then messaging their client or staff for queries regarding openings.
  5. Youtube channels -> I usually relied on the following channels during my prep and I what I usually watch as well.
    1. Traversy Media -> Followed his tutorials the most.
    2. Academind by Maximilian SchwarzmĂĽller -> For learning full stack development I've mostly used his courses and honestly speaking they are amazing. I've also heard great things about her courses, Dr. Angela Yu.
    3. Tech News and General Tech Videos -> Fireship.io, Ben Awad, Devon Crawford, ForrestKnight. They Ben and Devon aren't posting these days but they are the reason why I found tech to be super cool.
    4. DSA and Algo Training -> Stick to no nonsense channels like TUF, Back To Back SWE, CS DOJO, Tushar Roy, NeetCode, Nick White, Priyansh Agarwal.
      1. Couple of websites which I liked a lot of practise includes USACO Guide, CP Algorithms, CSES.
