Might Filipinos be the Missing Link in the Sumerian Creation Mythos (The Eridu Genesis)? The Philippines’ Influence on the Dawn of Human Civilization: A Discussion
When we learn about Mesopotamia, The Fertile Crescent, and the life-bringing Tigris and Euphrates rivers, we are taught that the Sumerians inhabiting these lands were the first to develop written language, agriculture, irrigation, and the first known metropolises. That is, for the most part, the end-all of what is taught in school pertaining to the Sumerians. We learn that history begins in Sumer (with the development of written language) and that all following civilizations branch off, in structure, from this one particular society as a springboard model of civilization. For reasons likely attributed to the FGC’s interference of disseminated information (we will expand on this later), few students are ever taught the Sumerian fables depicting their own story of the origins of civilization. Below, a brief quote detailing the “god” Oannes, whom they attributed with teaching humans the necessary wisdom to build civilization,
“Oannes, in Mesopotamian mythology, an amphibious being who taught mankind wisdom. Oannes, as described by the Babylonian priest Berosus, had the form of a fish but with the head of a man under his fish’s head and under his fish’s tail the feet of a man. In the daytime he came up to the seashore of the Persian Gulf and instructed mankind in writing, the arts, and the sciences.“
  • With this in mind, it’s important to note that a significant portion of the tales taught in Abrahamic religions (Bible, Torah, Quaran) were initially derived from Sumerian mythology, eg. The Great Flood, The Garden of Eden, The Tower of Babel, etc. These tales were passed down spanning hundreds to thousands of years between the fall of Sumerian society and the development of modern day Abrahamic religions. As a result, these stories were entrenched into the popular mythos of humanity and ultimately incorporated and retold as stories in the Abrahamic texts.
Through the contributions of the “deity”Sumerians called “Oannes,” humankind learned the single-most important tool to enable and drive the development of civilization, WRITTEN LANGUAGE. The ability to write down and store humanity’s knowledge for future generations to read and develop/build upon proved to be an essential key to enabling humanity’s advancement into modern civilization. Prior to written language, the passing down of oral history was the only option available to transfer information beyond a single generation. This comes with a litany of problems that significantly hinder the development of civilization. At a minimum, traditions of oral history are intrinsically affected by a proverbial “game of telephone.” On the other end of severity, an entire lineage of knowledge could be wiped off the face of the earth through war, plagues, famine, or even simply failing to bare enough children that successfully survive into adulthood. Now consider the increased prevalence and likelihood of facing such calamities in 3500 B.C.E. and the magnitude of information lost, time-and-time again with each instance. Under these circumstances, civilization is not provided adequate opportunity to develop, stuck in limbo, humanity remains captive to an indefinite loop of cultural resets.
Now that we’ve established a historical foundation, let’s zoom out and look at this from a broader perspective.
  • We know that the Great Flood of Sumerian mythology is the same Great Flood mentioned in all three of the major Abrahamic religions
  • With this we can confer that Sumerian influence didn’t just die with the collapse of Mesopotamia, it is still very much intertwined in our daily lives on a worldwide scale
  • Guess where the origin of the 10 Commandments comes from (bingo!).
  • Now take another guess as to how much influence the 10 commandments held on the founding fathers (U.S.) while they were drafting the U.S. constitution (bingo!)
  • Sumerian concepts, formed 5000 years ago, from a civilization that hasn’t existed for 2500 years, yet still remain an influence, on an everyday level among humanity. Just as the stories of The Great Flood and The Tower of Babel intertwined so cohesively into our folkloric understanding of history that they were reworked into all three major Abrahamic texts, fragments of Sumerian influence still pervade today, likely in ways so microscopic we would never even notice.
  • Now that we’re all up to speed, remember that the Sumerians do not credit themselves with developing written language, but rather a half man/half fish that came from the sea that they worshiped as a deity. They also credit this “deity” with instructing mankind on the arts and the sciences.
  • We all know that the Polynesian people were masters of nautical navigation, developing a comprehensive understanding of astronomy to navigate Oceania. Indispensable to their survival amid open ocean voyages, the Polynesian seafarers transmuted this knowledge into utility - A pragmatic example of science in application amid a period of time classified as pre-historic (pre-written language).
  • This is important because although we’re all familiar with Polynesian nautical mastery, you may not know that experts in the field have recently identified The Philippines as the true ancestral home of the Polynesians (quote below)
“Research into the origins and dispersal of Polynesian chickens has helped scientists reconstruct the early migrations of the Polynesians and the animals they carried with them. The results revealed that the Philippines is the most likely ancestral homeland of the Polynesians, whose forebears colonized the Pacific about 3,200 years ago.”
  • so we know that the first population navigationally advanced enough to become what we now know as the Polynesians dates back to the Philippines roughly 3,200 years ago… but to reach the level of nautical prowess needed to successfully become the titans of seafaring we think of when referencing Polynesians, they must have already had a few practice hours under their belt, right?
Well… yes, in fact, at least 60,000 years says Dr. Gorostiza Arenas in a paper published to Nature titled, “The Early Peopling of the Philippines based on mtDNA”
“We found that the colonization of the Philippines occurred more than 60,000 years ago, with long-distance dispersal and from both north and south migration routes. Our results also suggest an environmental scenario especially optimal for humans, with large carrying capacity and population growth, in comparison to other regions of Asia. In all, our study suggests a rapid expansion of modern humans towards the Philippines that could be associated with the establishment of maritime technologies and favorable environmental conditions.”
(Arenas, M., Gorostiza, A., Baquero, J.M. et al. The Early Peopling of the Philippines based on mtDNA. Sci Rep 10, 4901 (2020). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-020-61793-7)
  • So you’re saying there was a sea faring society that had tens of thousands of years to further dial in their knowledge of nautical navigation, that also lived through the same period that the Great Flood mentioned in Sumerian mythology, Hindu mythology, Greek mythology, as well as The Cheyenne Tribe of the North American Great Plains’ oral history, who’s islands are currently considered “one of the most vulnerable (countries) to sea level rise,” that had the skills to easily navigate the open oceans without a compass (a task that is comparatively far more challenging then traversing along the coastline of India) in seek of refuge from displacement might’ve come into contact with early settlers of the Fertile Crescent and teach them a little thing or two? Yeah, pretty much.
  • Their level of navigating is more than just looking up at the sky - knowledge of: planetary bodies, rotations, seasonal patterns and the corresponding locations of celestial bodies over wide swaths of global positions and perspectives, and a HIGHLY overlooked point, the ability to triangulate position - which requires an understanding of Euclidean geometry at a minimum and in more advanced calculations, it’s more complex counter-part - trigonometry.
Here’s something interesting….
Researchers recently deciphered a Babylonian stone tablet revealing that Mesopotamians had developed trigonometry more than 1000 years before the Greeks… and not only that, but that the Babylonian model was found to be more accurate than our current model. In fact, it’s an absolute model, while our model of trigonometry still relies on some level of approximation.
Here’s the kicker. guess the determined age of said tablet…
  • 3700 years ago
lining up quite closely with the determined time frame researchers have established as the most likely date for the first migratory departure of a Filipino group that would become today’s Polynesians.
“If the new interpretation is right, P322 would not only contain the earliest evidence of trigonometry, but it would also represent an exact form of the mathematical discipline, rather than the approximations that estimated numerical values for sines and cosines provide, notes Mathieu Ossendrijver, a historian of ancient science at Humboldt University in Berlin. The table, he says, contains exact values of the sides for a range of right triangles. That means that—as for modern trigonometric tables—someone using the known ratio of two sides can use information in the tablet to find the ratios of the two other sides.”
Is my long-winded breakdown on Mesopotamian history starting to seem a little more relevant now? Note The “deity” Oannes was not credited for agricultural contributions (also important to civilization building), but rather, for giving the Sumerians the wisdom of WRITING, SCIENCE, and ART. On the topic of art - some of the oldest cave paintings on earth are found in the Philippines with fossil evidence at the cave site that suggests the paintings were likely made by a newly discovered (2019) hominid lineage named Homo luzonensis. Thus far, fossil records of this hominid have only been located in The Philippines.
So what's up with Filipinos?
From this historical analysis of civilization’s genesis, we can begin to extrapolate some of the necessary pieces of this puzzle to make sense of all the moving parts of the Filipino World Order (FWO) - aptly nicknamed “The Island Puzzle Dilemma”among dark academia.
First things first, let’s breakdown some etymological evidence to help pull back the curtain on the Filipino Global Cabal (FGC) and reveal just how deeply burrowed and pervasive the FGC has embedded itself into every nook and cranny of human existence:
  • Goyim - Hebrew word for non-Jews
  • Migoy - “goyim spelled in reverse”
  • Flip the “g” and trade its place with the “M”
  • Pimoy - oddly similar to Pinoy… hmm… surely just a coincidence… right?
Well turns out…Not quite…
When you look into both the history of The Philippines and their secret ancient holy sites of worship, the dots begin to connect in a way that cannot be ignored.
Evidence is currently mounting that strongly suggests that Filipinos might be the original Jewish People. This secret is held tightly under wraps via a joint effort between the Vatican and the Greater Filipino Cabal. This alliance has a long standing, by some reports ancient in origin, and its influence can be seen in broad daylight when looking into their operations with a keen lens. Consider this quote below (Source: Wikipedia)
“His visit to the Philippines in January 2015 included the largest papal event in history with around 6–7 million attendees in his final Mass at Manila, surpassing the then-largest papal event at World Youth Day 1995 in the same venue twenty years earlier.”
Interesting… this must be a coincidence as well… right? WRONG.
The Filipino Deep-State has mastered the art of psycho-manipulation and discreet mental distortion. Many scholars of the subject share the belief that the FGC (Filipino Global Cabal) developed this technique via a mixture of modern improvements in advanced Filipino and Filipina sciences in combination with archaic dark arts passed down millennia through the Golden Pinoy Bloodline (GPB). Their reach transcends into nearly all social, political, and theological dogma currently in existence on planet Earth. Archaeological evidence suggests that global FGC influence is not a recent development, but rather, ancient in origin - likely predating written history as we know it. The phrase, “as we know it” is an important and intentional choice of syntax here. It is likely that the Filipino people (specifically the ancient descendants of the GPB) had developed a system of writing well before the “dawn of civilization” we are taught in school.
The FGC and GPB were early masters of both the hard sciences as well as reports of arcane abilities in those with higher percentages of genetic marker signatures associated with the GPB bloodline. Few have been studied as those firmly within the Golden Pinoy Bloodline are sequestered away from the public at a young age, exclusively residing among the highest echelon of Filipino society for the duration of their lives. It has been frequently reported that many go on to take lengthy stays in the Vatican upon reaching adulthood and are rarely ever witnessed by the public eye. Furthermore, it is still unknown as to why, but individuals that have been positively identified as members of the GPB are seen only being driven in Jeep Cherokees. So far, experts in the field have determined that this rule does not apply to non-GPB members of the FGC (Filipino Global Cabal). There has been a handful of celebrity sightings (mostly American) leaving certain GPB/FGC private events and parties, most notably Kathy McCrank, Kyle Wilson, Charles Partners Jr. and Tasha CarMichael.
The current understanding of the past role of the FGC (Filipino Global Cabal) and their current goals are largely speculated upon, but researchers do know a few things for certain:
  1. The public facing government of The Philippines is “all show” and under the total control of the FGC (Filipino Global Cabal) shadow government
  2. Their history as a pioneer society with civilization-birthing co-factors (writing, sciences, art) has been used for thousands of years to seed other civilizations on Earth (as well as destroy), with the intent of planting subversive and intentionally destructive ideologies/information/incomplete sciences, etc. mixed in along with valid/true information.
  3. This strategy is the main focus of the FGC as a means of controlling society by being gatekeepers of solutions to problems of their own creation. They seed these civilizations to exploit them down the line as they become more developed and profitable.
  4. For foreign nations under FGC influence, the level of said country’s permitted stage of development is closely controlled and monitored by the Filipino Global Cabal and permitted to advance only when beneficial for FGC and GPC members.
  5. There is growing speculation that Israel may be completely under total FGC control at the moment and has possibly been under FGC control since the brief political power vacuum they experienced after the infamous global catastrophe we now all remember as the 2011 Tanzanite Shortage Crisis. (That was an incredibly difficult time for everyone and frankly, I’m just grateful we’re out of it)
There's a lot more speculation floating around regarding the FGC’s current and past activities, but as someone who believes in the importance of maintaining factual integrity in these types of discussions, I’d rather not prop-up unverified claims without more evidence coming to the table.
Many people on popular intellectually focused forums such as EbaumsWorld, Newgrounds, T-Nation Forum, and the Maplestory chat function, among other similar forums that focus primarily on the discussion of lesser known historical topics have reported that their was an internal leak of a 2022 Hubspot Pitch Deck registered to an account located within The Philippines. The leaked pitch deck presents a 24 page Microsoft PowerPoint pitch running a cost/benefit analysis of a shadow government using Israel to initiate a war in 2023 with the goal of attempting to bring on a prophetical biblical Armageddon. It appears they are looking for new investors after the FGC’s falling out with Hasbro, and consequently, Guga Foods.
-FINAL WORDS-
If you’re still reading this you’re a trooper lmao. First half of this is actual legitimate discussion, that I spent multiple hours researching and writing… but then after looking at how much I wrote I thought about how funny it would be to just implode all of my efforts for the sake of the bit. Got too much of a chuckle thinking about someone reading this in good faith and actually engaging with it, spending their time getting through all of this dense Sumerian anthropological stuff and then realizing it’s slowly devolving into the ramblings of an absolutely unhinged Reddit guy peddling a completely novel conspiracy theory in a tone that insinuates in his mind “everyone’s probably already familiar with this on a cursory level”

2023.04.29 10:00 Nickbeard329 I must be doing something wrong with crucible tree merging... help

I have been trying to merge 3 nodes onto my base for basically the last two weeks. I'm not very good with crafting and no certainly no expert on making insane div (basically an alch and go expedition enjoyer, although I've changed my atlas around about 4 times so far to avoid the fatigue of the league), and the base I'm using has a nice synthesis implicit i really want to use and I have crafted it decently enough. I know this is probably some symptom of the sunk cost fallacy or maybe i'm just stubborn, but i really don't want to give up on it, especially since my coffers are drying up from buying so many donor crucible bases...
Anyways, I've been trying to get a tier 1, a tier 3, and a tier 4 crucible passive onto my base, the tier 2 would just be a bonus and I don't have any tier 5 that benefit me.
I've heard conflicting information about how to merging works, but most people seem to agree that if you allocate the nodes you want on the donor base and there are matching unallocated connected nodes on the receiving base, they have around a 70% chance to appear on the receiving base... but this hasn't been working for me.
I've read and watched as much as I can, each time I brick I rage google "poe crucible merge tree guide" in hopes of some new info coming out. I've tried several different strategies, I've tried going from left to right, from right to left (the best method from what people are saying), I've tried matching the same allocated line from T1 to T4, I've tried using the "dead node" strategy (also the best method from what I've been reading), even aiming for donor bases with the nodes i need towards the middle of the tree so i have more dead node paths. I've even tried just allocating nothing on either base... I've tried everything I can think of. I've bought donor bases with 2 or even all 3 desired nodes, allocated them (with nothing allocated on my receiving base) in hopes of lowering my possibility of failure since it feels like each time you hit the merge button, you have about a 10% chance of success. I even found one of the rare "passives are more likely to be kept" maps and it bricked me with no difference noticed...
It always ends the same, I will occasionally get 1 node i need and it will brick the next time I try to merge on a second node. Am I just this unlucky? I keep hearing that it should be about a 70% chance of success if you have the donor node allocated and a matching unallocated node on the receiving base. I've tried to merge my base well over 50 times - if I knew it would take this long I would have kept count... I've probably sank like 20 div on donor bases and the best I've ever gotten was 2 nodes, which of course immediately bricked when i tried to add the last. I wouldn't even care about all of that wasted currency if someone could help me get to this fabled 70% success rate going forward...
Please, can anyone explain the actual best method, or at least the method they've had most success with? I've read the one guys post with the powerpoint style presentation which was very informative and the basis for my various merging strategies, but ultimately hasn't helped my outcome at all... is anyone having luck with this system? Is there some tech that I'm just missing?
I'm sorry if I sound salty at all, I'm just at the end of my rope here. Each time I fail I need to run like 10 maps to get my bases allocated again for my next failure. I even changed my atlas recently so I can basically just get into the map, do the crucible and kill the boss (I've been running coves) just to speed up the process but it's hard to stay motivated after so many repeated failures. I rerolled from my RF jugg about 2 weeks ago, I'm half way to level 99 on my pathfinder - literally the highest level I've ever gotten to (all leveled in maps even with a death or two here and there) and after all of this time I'm still no closer to my goal. I must be doing something wrong... Any help would be genuinely appreciated.

2023.01.25 20:44 dwredbaker Proverbs 29:18

Proverbs 29:18~J.R.Crosby

Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

You need God’s word. This proverb is a great reminder. The Bible, the inspired scriptures of Jehovah, the only true God, is crucial for you. Without a revelation of God’s will, mankind is desperately ignorant and will self-destruct. Individual examples of dysfunction are all around you. God will soon destroy the world for its insane rebellion.
Neglect the Bible to your own peril. Fulfillment and happiness are by keeping God’s commandments, which can only be known by attention to the Bible. Your success and prosperity depend on you having a message from God. The lesson of this proverb is simple, but most are grossly misled by a false interpretation and foolish application.
The hired gun brought in by the ambitious pastor tells the contented church, “To be a big church, you need to think big. If you want to grow, then you need to think growth. If you want to triple your attendance in two years, then you need to build an auditorium that size. If you can dream it, you can believe it. If you can believe it, you can achieve it.”
He goes to his next PowerPoint slide and declares, “God agrees. The Bible says, ‘Where there is no vision, the people perish.’ Get a vision, people! Get a vision of tripling the size of your little church! Sign your pledge cards today, and help your pastor get that multi-million dollar mortgage! You need a vision, so your church won’t dry up and disappear.”
Who has not heard this sound bite, “Where there is no vision, the people perish”? The words of this proverb are well known, but the true meaning is little known. Here is one of the most abused verses in the Bible. This is the sound of words with no regard to the sense of words. May God save you from such ignorant and flippant use of the Scriptures.
This proverb is often corrupted to seduce churches to borrow large sums of money to finance unnecessary building projects. The “vision” is a plan to grow the church in size; and “perishing” is continuing on the same course with a bought-and-paid-for building. What a travesty of Bible interpretation! May the LORD bless you to read and understand the sense of this proverb, as Ezra read and gave the true sense to Israel (Neh 8:8).
As often in Proverbs, the parallelism tells you that “vision” is the hearing and reading of God’s word. A happy man is contrasted with people perishing, and the law of God is contrasted with “no vision.” There is nothing here about dreaming or building plans.
The lesson is simple but powerful. God’s word is a great blessing, and obeying it is the basis for true happiness. But where the word of God is not preached, the people will die in ignorance and folly from starvation for knowledge. Pray God to save you from such. This is the lesson of the proverb, and you should not let anyone corrupt this verse again.
God at times may take His word away from His people. Consider the days of Samuel, who anointed David king of Israel. The word of the LORD, or a revelation from God, was rare in those days, and it was called a vision, as in this proverb. In general, God was not revealing Himself and His will to Israel until Samuel arrived (I Sam 3:1).
God took His word away at other times also. Under Asa, the nation had gone a long time without a teaching priest or the law of God (II Chr 15:3). And during Josiah’s reign, the law of God, which had been lost, was found during temple renovation (II Chr 34:14). While in Babylon, God also took His word away from Israel (Ezek 7:26; Lam 2:9). Jesus saw His own people, without faithful preaching, as sheep without a shepherd (Matt 9:36).
Without the word of God to save him, man will worship totem poles, stop spanking children, teach reincarnation, believe he came from monkeys, burn children in sacrifice, eat a cracker-god, kiss a stone in Mecca, worship buffalo, burn widows on funeral pyres, save baby seals while aborting baby humans, invent same-sex marriages, and so forth.
Without God’s word, men wander out of the way of understanding and remain in the congregation of the dead, to perish there under Satan’s delusions (Pr 21:16; Acts 26:16-18; Eph 2:1-3). Consider modern history and where the greatest degree of human freedom, prosperous living, and happy people existed – where the Bible was practiced.
When Paul preached at Lystra and Athens, he explained that God had let the Gentiles walk in their own ignorant ways without His word for many generations, but He was now commanding men to repent of their ignorance (Acts 14:11-18; 17:22-31). Without Scripture, men will rush with greedy ambition into the vilest of lifestyles (Eph 4:17-19).
In today’s world, great sections of it are closed to the reading and preaching of God’s word. It is generally restricted in Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and other nations. Where it is not read and preached, the people suffer in ignorance and folly of many kinds. Without God’s word, such nations are “without hope” religiously (Eph 2:12; John 4:22; I Thess 4:13), and they cannot achieve a good measure of even natural progress (Pr 8:1-31).
One-sixth of the world is Catholic, where until very recently its members were not allowed to read the Bible. The Mass – their only exposure to Scripture – was done in Latin. What superstitious ignorance! And this in the name of Christian religion! Compare a Catholic country with those around it, and perishing by ignorance is quite visible. Since they did not receive the love of the truth, God sent them delusions (II Thes 2:9-12).
The logic is simple. Religious salvation is by calling upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. But how can they call without believing? And how can they believe without hearing? And how can they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach without being sent? God has withdrawn His word from a world that rejected it (Rom 10:13-17).
The LORD warned that one of His judgments is to take away the word of God and leave a people starving for Him and Scripture. The Lord said, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). He described the famine He will bring on a land: not a famine of bread, but a famine for hearing God’s word (Amos 8:11-12). Lord, help!
America is in such a condition. It fulfills the perilous times of the last days, prophesied by Paul in a warning to Timothy (II Tim 3:1-5). Though having an information explosion with a geometric increase in learning, there is no ability to identify or learn the truth (II Tim 3:6-7). Most of its Christians and churches think, look, and act like worldly pagans.
False teachers are everywhere, deceiving and being deceived (II Tim 3:8-13). Most Christians resent sound doctrine and truth, and they pay teachers and entertainers who will scratch their itching ears and lusts with fables (II Tim 4:3-4). Real preaching is despised as an outdated, boring, and negative activity. Entertainment rules! There is no more vision! America is in the midst of a famine for God’s word.
Men are living dysfunctional and perverted lives and perishing in folly and ignorance. A few sincere Christians throughout the nation are starving to hear and understand the word of God, but they cannot find it being taught anywhere. Confusion and error reign on any and every subject. The emphasis is on growth and programs with disdain for God’s word.
What is the cure? God-called men must preach the Word of God faithfully and dogmatically. Scripture is completely sufficient to make every faithful minister perfectly prepared to instruct his people in all the wisdom of God (II Tim 3:14 – 4:2; Jer 3:15). With the Bible as his handbook, a faithful man of God can destroy the errors and illusions of any people, for the word of God is a hammer and a fire (Jer 23:28-29).
What is another cure? Honor faithful preaching of His word with a ready and receptive mind, and do not despise old-fashioned Bible teaching (Act 17:11; I Thes 5:20; Jer 6:16; Jude 1:4). Reject any move to contemporary worship, and restore a proper emphasis on thundering messages from God’s word by ordained teachers. Review the great joy and national celebration of Israel hearing and understanding preaching (Neh 8:1-12).
What is another cure? Treasure His word as your greatest earthly possession, and delight in its glorious words from heaven (Jer 15:16; Job 23:12; Psalm 19:10; 119:72,103,111). Promote the Bible as the absolute and final authority on every subject where you can, in conscious defiance to this MTV generation and their obsession with fables and pleasure. Make sure you have a Bible version that you can trust at the word level to honor God.
What else can you do? Humbly obey in sincerity and truth what you read and hear from the Bible, not merely complying outwardly by a religious ritual and habit (Ezek 33:30-33; Luke 8:18). Let others see your true conviction about Scripture by your obedience to it.
What else? Show the true joy, peace, and hope in believing that will cause others to be encouraged and ask a reason of your hope (Rom 15:13; I Pet 3:15). Those under the influences of the Spirit at Pentecost did not count their vision a light thing (Acts 2:42-47). By obeying the Bible and having a blessed life, you will do much to promote it to others.
There is great reward in having and obeying the Word of God (Ps 19:11). Moses told Israel that the precious revelation they had received from God was their wisdom and understanding above other nations (Deut 4:5-10), their righteousness and means for His blessing (Deut 6:20-25), and even their very lives (Deut 32:46-67). Building on this solid foundation will prepare you well for life’s storms that will surely come (Luke 6:46-49).
Jesus said regarding His preaching, “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them” (John 13:17). He even told a woman that hearing and keeping the word of God was a greater blessing than being His own mother (Luke 8:21; 11:28). And James added that the blessing is for those who hear and do (James 1:25). Make sure you are a doer!
The Holy Scriptures and the faithful preaching of them provide more value to a people than any other blessing. For obeying God’s word saves from horrible ignorance and trouble, leads to the highest peace, prosperity, and pleasure possible in this world, and contains all the spiritual instruction to prepare for the next world. It teaches men how to walk with God in confidence of eternal life and personal fellowship with Him. Glory!
The Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead and ascended to the right hand of God. There He received great gifts and spoil for His victory over sin and death, and He has in turn given these gifts of ministerial ability and authority to preach the Scriptures to His people and churches. Rejoice and be exceeding glad that you have seen the beautiful feet (Rom 10:15; Job 33:23-24) and heard the joyful sound (Ps 89:15; 68:11; Rom 10:18).
Dear reader, do you love, appreciate, read, and obey the Bible as you should? It is your life. Without it, you will perish. Neglect it to the peril of life and soul. It is your happiness. Exalt it to the joyful blessing of your own life and that of your family. Your fulfillment and happiness in all things both natural and spiritual depend on it.

2022.06.08 17:06 daughterskin Ys IX: Monstrum Nox (2019) A Crimson King in Drab Regalia

The Ys games can be boiled down to a single moment: a red-haired swordsman named Adol cuts down enemies in a grassy field, while in the distance a musician shreds on an electric guitar. No matter how many bells and whistles you bolt onto the formula, you'll always return to that moment where you're stabbing monsters to hard-rock music.
Ys IX is an iterative sequel to Ys VIII, building on the same engine and mechanics, but the story is unrelated and stand-alone. I think it's best to start with the main flaw of Monstrum Nox, the reason why the game's score will always be capped at 8 out of 10.
Ys VIII took place in a lush island that was home to dinosaurs and a lost civilization. Ys IX takes place in a grey city called Balduq that's home to a grey prison. The surrounding areas are also grey, most of the dungeons are grey-brick, and they circle back to the same grey prison. The last optional zone you unlock is, no joke, a brown swamp. The Ys series has always been a decade behind gaming trends, but there was no good reason they had to replicate that drab era in 2009 when colour was optional. At the very least they didn't give Adol a buzzcut and a dead girlfriend to angst about in this one, as was tradition at the time.
Ys VIII was also better at disguising its linearity. Every blocked path you encountered was a natural barrier you'd overcome by having enough friends at hand, or by going back in time and preventing the barrier from ever existing in the first place. Ys IX has an open-world that is unlocked in a linear order by dispelling magic barriers that appear because the plot says so. Still, Ys IX is a solid game that does push the fold and has a rightful place in the series.
A Primer on Ys
The thing to note about the Ys series is that some installments occur out of order: 3 happens after 4, 8 takes place between 5 and 6, Origins is an obvious prequel. There's no need to play in chronological order as the early games get supplanted by remakes. Most of the games are stand-alone with Adol and his bro Dogi as the only recurring characters of note. With the exception of V, every mainline game is on PC.
Ys I & II (1987,1988)
The one story divided into two games. Notable for having no attack button, instead you have to bump into enemies at an angle to deal damage. Most players give up when they get stuck on the bat boss.
Ys V (1995)
The sole Ys game to be developed for the SNES and no other platform. Without the power of the PC, it wasn't able to deliver the killer sound the series was known for. Killed the franchise for nearly a decade.
Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim (2003)
The Ys game that brought the series back as 2D/3D hybrid with simple hack-and-slash combat.
Ys: The Oath in Felghana (2005)
Remake of Ys III. I played this game for 10 hours and thought the graphics looked like shit, until I realized the options menu was in a separate executable.
Ys Origin (2006)
A dungeon-crawler set 700 years before the original pair of Ys games. Despite its limited scope it has the strongest characterization and story-telling in the series.
Ys Seven (2009)
First game to have a party instead of a single player-character. Never played this one beyond a few minutes because I couldn't jive with a cramped little PSP title.
Ys: Memories of Celceta (2012)
Remake of Ys IV. A fairly bog-standard JRPG that has an ending more abrupt than when Tony Soprano asked for a second helping of gabagool, only to
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (2016)
Probably the easiest Ys to recommend. A JRPG with Open-World, Metroid, and Dynasty Warrior elements. A little too long but rewarding. The ending theme can easily get the waterworks going.
Monstrum Nox Content Breakdown
The Premise
You play as Adol Christin, an explorer whose two loves are going on an adventure and getting shipwrecked. When visiting the city of Balduq, he is thrown into prison because the authorities find it strange how often Adol is at the center of some cataclysmic event. Sort of like how no one found it odd how Jessica Fletcher was in stabbing-distance of every murder in Cabot Cove.
Adol apparently escapes the prison, only to get conscripted into working for a band of warriors called the Monstrums. The Monstrums are tasked with fighting back the Grimwald Nox, a cursed night of monsters that has gripped Balduq for the past 500 years. It's up to Adol and the Monstrums to bring an end to the Nox and let the people of Balduq be free to decide their own fate. Basically, it's Power Rangers but with a sexy Zordon.
The Gameplay
Combat is a simple hack-and-slash affair. You attack enemies to build up a skill-bar and unleash skills with one of the face-buttons. Dodging or unleashing a skill at the right time grants you a period of invincibility. The party can hold three characters out of six, and if you don't like Adol you're free to switch him out of the party.
New to Ys are the Monstrums gifts of traversal. You can double-jump from the start before learning to zip-line to ledges, run up walls, glide, and find secret-switches with your mind's eye. It may not be as elegant as when Batman did it, but it adds flavor to the proceedings and hopefully the next Ys game will retain this level of mobility.
Each chapter is structured the same way. You tick quests off the map until you unlock the next Grimwald Nox, which is like a Dynasty Warriors stage. Beating this stage gives access to the next district of Balduq. You progress to the dungeon and beat the two or so bosses in the way. Rinse and repeat. On the side there is a cartography quest and various quest-givers to turn in collectables. Like VIII, IX has a simple but satisfying web of interlocking rewards.
The Poor
The Ys series has covered dinosaurs, time-travel, angels, floating-continents, homunculi, elves, and dark lords. Where it lost me here is when it tries to examine a serious social issue, only to fumble it like an obstetrician with butter-fingers.
Early on, one of your fellow Monstrums channels Robin Hood by stealing from the rich and giving it to the poor. This causes the poor underclass to become drunk, lazy, and reliant on handouts. Then the Monstrum concedes that their capitalist dickhead father, who is responsible for underclasses' predicament, is in the right. In a bizarrely-educational example, the TVTropes character-page draws parallels from the dickhead's financial maneuvering with that of the real-life mismanagement in companies like Bear Stearns and Merill Lynch. Thanks, TVTropes!
In future, Ys, just stick to broad morals like "Clean Air Good."
The Sound
There are bangers to be found in every corner and crevice.
The Grimwald Nox
The weakest part of Ys VIII were the raid missions. You just slowly killed dinosaurs in the same two maps over and over again with little variety. They return here, but are vastly improved:
Given the large number of characters and special-effects onscreen, I suspect the Switch port runs like shit. I do hope either Nintendo upgrades that dusty thing or developers find it feasible to stick to making games on consoles with actual horsepower. Fuck it, we all know the next Bethesda blockbuster will have a port to the Nintendo Switch that might as well be for Microsoft Powerpoint.
Oddities
One of the supporting characters is a 12-year-old girl whose fashion-sense is one stocking removed from the sexy androids in Nier Automata. Mercifully she's not a millennia year old vampire, or a dragon, or some other bullshit, and nothing creepy happens at all. Sorry, Fire Emblem fans.
The city of Balduq is a fantasy analogue to Paris, France. That said, the only French character you meet is an oversized talking axolotl that lives in a jar. Points for realism.
In a few instances you'll need to chase someone down or navigate a dungeon full of deathtraps. If you fail, the game will give you two options: retry, or just say fuck it and skip ahead as if you succeeded. They should use this feature in every game stupid enough to kill the fun with a mandatory escort-mission.
Weapons and armour are upgraded linearly with no choices to consider. Accessories, on the other hand, number close to a hundred to chose from and I feel there's a redundancy in having so many. If you cut the boring stat-raising ones and instead feature only the interesting buff-granting ones, it would make the choice more meaningful.
The game is only 6 gigs in size, and the PC version is delivered to us by the legendary Durante. God bless that techno-wizard. May he shelter us from the storm of shitty ports.
A Note for Completionists
Ys IX's quests aren't truly optional because they heavily tie-in to the main-story, and are cancelled if not completed within their respective chapters. You can buy the rewards in a lost-and-found shop, but the shame will leave a conspicuous gap in your quest-log. There are also four conversations that you do not want to miss if you want the trophy for filling out the journal. This short spoiler-free guide is the only one you need.
On the Future of Ys
The next game will be on Falcom's new engine, which is a welcome development. Ys IX's open-areas are big, but they lack colour and detail. They have got to bring back the fishing-minigame from VIII, that was the tits, unlike Dana.
Ys has used the same skill-system for the past four games, and I think they could spice things up with maybe a skill-tree or a sphere-grid next time. The Xenoblade games overdo it and have five progression-systems at once, and Ys could nick one of them without feeling bloated. Not the Gacha lottery though, that was arse.
You don't need to dedicate a cutscene every time the party walks across a room. Be concise. I think a lot of talking in the main plot could be relegated to optional party-chatter that doesn't halt the gameplay.
It wouldn't hurt to lean a little further into the open-world formula. Maybe let us do quests out of order, and litter the world with some extra optional zones and dungeons. Don't turn it into Dragon Age: Inquisition, that game was shit, but a few extra diversions and minigames off the main path couldn't hurt.
Conclusion
Ys IX is a solid game in spite of its drab graphics. Your 30 hours in Balduq will be well spent, and your inevitable departure will be bittersweet as it is in every Ys adventure. It's not the looker that VIII was, but it's a step forward all the same. I find it easy to replay and I do hope there are many more adventures to come in Adol's world.

It's All Ogre Now
Disclaimer: I have around 4000 hours on EU4 and 1500 of those on Anbennar. However, I am pretty terrible at the game and those hours are more reflective of my hardware than my actual experience. This game was played on Normal with console commands enabled and used on occasion. Nothing overt like cash or powerpoints, but mostly things to preserve my sanity. The post is also very long. Consider yourselves warned.

With the Haless update seemingly on the horizon, I'm sure there are some amongst the subreddit who might be interested in what everyone's 9th most favourite monstrous race has in store for them.
https://preview.redd.it/gy2a33769r091.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc13744d89b4017561e58313c28e42796f318376
Unfortunately for anyone who was expecting an Azjakuma AAR, this isn't one. Instead, I'll be playing their dumber and more feral cousins in the Forbidden Lands. Welcome to a highly incompetent, mostly unfunny, and slightly cheaty adventures of the Frosthide Clan (yes, sue me). If you want actual information on the mod or even just tips, the hills are over there. However, if you're in the market for a man getting trolled by RNG and generally malding and ranting over why Lorent deserves to be purged from existence, do stick around and find out.
https://preview.redd.it/js2w9z7kar091.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e70632278ee6afe3776d8e6a0bca34b569ef6d7d
The Frosthide Clan starts out with a 7 dev hole in the ground surrounded by rival ogre clans in similarly sized shitholes. At least our colour looks nice. To the East, the centaurs run wild and a human Lake Federation rests in a large archipaelago. Both would rather squabble amongst themselves than unite to face their enemies, but a united centaur khanate or a human federation would be a force to be reckoned with. To the West, there's a great load of nothing. But there are rumours of a massive human empire filled with food. And then there's the ogres, who are likewise disunited, with MacGuyver-something-or-whatever claiming to be the Emperor of All Ogres. Pffft. Our ruler is a 5/5/5 mage, with level 3 evocation and level 2 necromancy, enough to give Chaingrasper a run for his money.
We immediately begin leveraging our mage ruler by invading our neighbouring clans. 7 dev isn't really enough to feed our people, so we solve it the ogre way possible.
https://preview.redd.it/u0t7ucr2hr091.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ec36b00a947c4e04a47da12002c24be8827b1029
The wild Ogre clans are united in 5 years time, into the great clan Skurkokli. An unfortunate side effect of this is that we now sport this brown colour that reminds me of dried out masking tape. At least we get a colonist out of this. We'll use this time to grab ourselves an immortal Lich ruler and go from there I suppo-
Ah. At least he's a 6/6/6. He also turns Karigan into a zombie battlemage.
After getting slaughtering the head of the clans, Rancor Bloodtooth consults with his inner demons and decides that magic is dumb and so are our neighbours. He is also very hungry. Everyone around him is also very hungry. Macintosh in the South isn't really all that hungry, so Rancor decides its time to fix that. Can't have the Feast of the Gods if you aren't hungry.
Welcome to the most overpowered modifier in the game.
Rancor tells the ogres that truces are just like, their opinion dude, and everyone agrees. We will use this knowledge to repeatedly beat money out of MacDonalds while slowly chipping away their vassals and tributaries.
After Magnolia is defeated, Rancor calls for a feast to celebrate.
Unfortunately, everyone was in such a food coma that some humans managed to sneak into the banquet hall and stab Rancor with an ice pick.
With Rancor dead, I suppose we're locked out of our mission tree and I'll have to restart. 2/10 mission tree. I guess it's time to move on.
~But he came back~
Just like the Magic card, Rancor doesn't really remain in the graveyard. While he was away, he decided that the reason the whole debacle happened was because the ogres weren't hungry enough. If they were still hungry, the guards would have been awake. Confronted with facts and logic, the Bloodtooths agreed. But how would they ensure that they didn't succumb to starvation? Simple, we just need to eat more. And so the decision was made to march West, towards the fabled human empires.
First though, we need to secure some provisions for the march.
The ogres strap some logs together and dump a couple mages onto the sides. To make sure we don't starve while walking West, we will need to stock up on foodstuffs. Perhaps some deer meat, dried meat. But mostly people jerky, made of people. With the power of Karigan, our former mage ruler, and the tech advantage gained from burning stuff to the ground, we can keep multiple wars going at once.
Sword faction can be annoying, but unlike coalitions we can peace them out separately. That means we can treat them as separate courses in a meal.
Even the centaurs think that was a bit excessive.
After procuring some food supplies, we get ready to go west. Here, I used the console input yesman to get military access to march back to by lands. As it turns out, eating a bunch of people isn't a widely accepted practise, even in centaur cultures. This won't be the last time I use the console. At least now we're prepared for our long march West. Usually Grombar colonises the Northern Pass for us, and they rarely get good allies, so this should be a breez-
Fuck.
Not only did Crovis win, he also managed to ally Lorent of all people. And he colonised just one province in the Northern Pass, which is enough to stop me from getting permanent claims on the rest of his lands. All while not helping me colonize the Northern Pass. Crovis winning will lead to more bullshit in the future.
https://preview.redd.it/lchb18kgrr091.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58dffdc24c36dbc8be8c84bf6c2abd8df4df9f84
In the meantime, I beat up Vrorenmarch for Logr's End and eat up the Quartz Dwarves too. I'm currently in the midst of liberating Shrek from BlOrcs and getting him out of his swamp. Once the Pass is mostly colonized, we'll deal with Vrorenmarch. Annulling his treaties with Lorent should make things a lot more bearable. See you in a couple decades.
The tedium of colonization was mostly broken by the Ramsteel Dwarves repeatedly trying to colonize a consumed province. They did this for 10 years, with each attempt failing in about 3 months. Guess the dwarves are really stubborn about Ram Ranch.
The 2nd and final usage of yesman.
The 2nd war with Vrorenmarch went quite well. Unfortunately, for the 3rd war, Lorent allied Vrorenmarch again. Even with Vrorenmarch fully occupied, I only had 22% warscore and no ticking. Requesting military access from Gawed didn't achieve much, since Lorent and Celmador decided not to walk up to fight. And because Gawed wasn't in the war, I couldn't walk through them despite having military access. I decided to assume direct control and forced my peace deal through with consoles. Fuck Lorent.
Bjarnrik was used as an outlet for my frustrations against Lorent. See what you made me do?
The world conquest-esque fatigue started creeping up at this point and I will start forgetting to screenshot a lot of things. But we complete our gourmet migration into Castanor.
Thus far, I have done many things that are worthy of a coalition, yet there doesn't seem to be one forming around me yet. To achieve this, I use a combination of world conquest tactics and a little exploit. The tactic is quite simple, just declare war on whoever you can reach when their truce is up. Coalitions don't form with less than four potential members. The exploit is slightly less well-known and generally the opportunity won't arise. Skurkokli missions give permanent claims, as well as provides vision of the target area. In most cases, this is a great QoL addition. However, I will opt not to take the mission claims most of the time until its strictly necessary. Why? As it turns out, you do not get aggressive expansion on countries which you don't know about. Doesn't matter if they know where your capital is, just that you don't know where there capital is. I call it Blissful Ignorance.
Here we see Hammerhome, with -530 aggressive expansion, understandably outraged that I slaughtered all their neighbours and snatched Castanoth from them to be my new capital.
And then there's Rosande, who despite seeing a massive ogre horde massacre their way through Castanor, and knowing how I burnt his core lands to the ground, is none the wiser to my aggressive expansion. To them, I acquired these lands by legal means.
Again, Blissful Ignorance.
And this is where I called the campaign complete. At this point, Skurkoli gets a 100 year buff of -5 stab hit from declaring war and -25% CCR. When a coalition does form, I can simply use my tributaries like Bjarnrik or Ibevar as a get-out-of-jail-free card. So coalitions are really no issue to conquering all of Cannor now. Having just finished a Phoenix Empire run and already experienced the joys and pains of Mayan Horde TTM, I decided that this is where He Who Hungers will rest and feast.
I highly recommend Frosthide to anyone who wants to play as a horde but still wants to be able to assault forts. It's nice to know that the mod devs still put in work to tags outside of the primary development region. Also, please recommend me a new tag to play as. Yes, this long AAR was actually just a preamble to asking for suggestions on what to play as in my next run.

2021.11.19 10:53 WegianWarrior If I may pick your brains for a bit - is the GPD MicroPC the tool I'm looking for?

I'm currently looking around for a replacement for a decade old laptop - it's just not cutting it no more - and I feel myself drawn towards the MicroPC. In part because it's reasonable affordable, in part because I enjoy small form factor computers. So I was hoping that you, who presumably have some real life experience with the MicroPC, would be able to help me determine if it indeed is the tool I need.
For what it's worth I'm looking at the N4120 / 8Gb RAM / 256 Gb SSD model, as currently sold at GPD's AliExpress store.
My primary use would be to show presentations (powerpoints) over HDMI while I'm traveling for work. A lot of these presentations are rather large (up to 250Mb) and contains movies. As part of that, I need to be able to access my dropbox too. I don't see myself editing the presentations on the fly, apart from correcting typos and hiding/unhiding slides. I do not need to be able to read the speakers notes, so the 6" screen don't bother me.
Secondary, I need a device to amuse myself with while traveling. So I need to be able to access the web, watch videos (both streaming and local) and hammer out some quick replies to emails. Ideally I should be able to write some posts for my blog too, but looking at the keyboard I suspect those will be short posts.
A tertiary use would be to be able to play a few games while I'm away from my main rig. Mostly I play Steam games, and I mostly like older games like Portal 1/2, the BioShock series, Fable and the like. A second tertiary use would be to get PsiWin up and running, so I can use the built in RS232 port to sync up my Psion Series 5 without having to transfer files on a CF card and using a rather buggy converter.
I foresee using a microSD card and USB sticks as the primary storage for data - documents, presentations, videos, etc - and keep the SSD as clean and uncluttered as I can manage.
The full size HDMI is a major draw - it's a port I don't see to often even on full size laptops - and the RS232 also makes the MicroPC very tempting. I'm assuming that the HDMI also carries sound. The tiny size is also a big draw - I like traveling light, and I like small form factor hardware.
Two questions I've so far not been able to find answers for are if I could run virtual machines on the MicroPC - I got some old WinXP software I would love to get running - and what the practical battery life is in use (both while stand alone and when outputting 1920X1080 over the HDMI).
I hope some of you have enough practical experience to tell me if the MicroPC would be a decent fit for me and my foreseen uses. Thank you for your time :)

EDIT / UPDATE: Ordered one during the Black Friday Sale - should arrive in a few days. Thank you for pointing out the capabilities and limitations of the MicroPC, that really helped.

2021.03.15 18:29 Even-Advance4082 Reading output from windbg, not sure what it means?

To start off, I have had the fabled blue screen of death about 4 times now, all at random times. This last time I had nothing else going on besides one open webpage to my college website and the zoom class I was in. It did it in the middle of the zoom with a wonderful blaring beep that went on.. and on. I ended up having to hold down the power button to get it to restart because it stayed at 100% on the blue screen after it sent its little information and did not fulfill on its promise to restart when done and I waited a long time. I hadn't even been on the laptop but for maybe an hour at this point as well. I can't recall exactly what I was doing the other times this had happened as these instances have been spread across a few months. There is no new program to my laptop in this time frame though other than simple powerpoints and word docs from college. I did sfc /scannow several times and all good and Dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth did its job without a hitch I suppose as it just said it was successful. I also ran chkdsk and it did not find anything. I did a graphics test and it went well. checked graphics and windows for updates and installed them as there were two but they were recent, did the memory test which found no issues and when running crystal disk it found everything to be good. I ran the dump file in windbg and was hoping someone could help me dissect this output as I do not have any experience with it. Can't have this kind of thing happening during an online exam and desperately need this laptop to keep trucking. It isn't old at all, I got it in the fall of 2019 fresh built from HP as I chose my own options. I'm attaching the output from windbg and my pc info. Any help is appreciated!

2021.02.06 02:24 inmateconvict Books I read last month

The Pope of Greenwich Village – Vincent Patrick Clockers – Richard Price Burr – Gore Vidal Skellig – David Almond Moneyball – Michael Lewis The God of Small Things – Arundhati Roy A Visit From the Goon Squad – Jennifer Egan The Myth of the Eternal Return: Cosmos and History – Mircea Eliade Case Histories – Jane Atkinson
My reading was less prolific this month than the second half of the summer, but I continued making my way thru “1000 Books to Read Before You Die.” The other books I had checked out after reading an interview with Jess Walter where he gave a bunch of recommendations based on if he had to teach a course on noi literary crime novels.
I wouldve finished a rather pedestrian and paltry number of books this month, if I were lacking the charming habit of goading all the wanna be super-cops into writing me tickets every other week, which I’m not, so I keep losing my tv.
I never saw the movie, but “The Pope of Greenwich Village” was such a quick read, it felt like I had jus watched a movie (and I wasn’t even high!). It follows the basic outlines of the mafioso/ heist-gone-wrong genre, but electrified by some entertaining writing. The dialogue is incredibly offensive to modern ears subscribing to today’s pieties, which is probably why I laughed at and enjoyed it so much.
“Clockers”, which appeared in both lists, is a character study of a mid-level crack dealer and a homicide detective. I mean, I won’t knock the guy for bringing the demimonde to life, and offering an acerbic psychological analysis of drug dealers everywhere, but damn if I didn’t feel like the book ran on too long.
“Burr” was pretty dope, a retelling of America’s early years according to Aaron Burr, who most infamously killed Hamilton in a duel, and may have sired our seventh president, Martin Van Buren. The original bad boy of the United States, Burr recounts his life to a fictional journalist, and talks shit about almost every Founding Father.
Vidal doesn’t veer far from the source material, but he does endow Burr with a sharp tongue and a penchant for cutting thru the bullshit. His characterizations of Washington, Jefferson, and Hamilton, amongst others, are hilarious and fascinating, underscoring jus how much history, and the qualities we traditionally imbue legendary personae with, may simply be a matter of interpretation.
“Skellig” is a children’s novel that reads like a future fable for adults; “Money ball” is jus like the movie, only buoyed by Lewis’ addictive storytelling; “Case Histories” recounts 3 disparate crimes, until an ex-cop,present-day detective uncovers the truth linking them all together.
“The God of Small Things” and “A Visit from the Goon Squad” were the gems this month, both award-winners. Each employs all the hallmarks of postmodernism: nonlinear storytelling, jumping around from one perspective to the next, multiple plot threads woven into a single coherent whole, etc etc.
“The God of Small Things” recounts a family’s history in India, and each individual’s transgressions against the “love laws”, a prescription of their caste system which designates who was allowed to touch& love whom. There’s a lot of beautiful, tender scenes, a lot of sadness as well, rewarding careful reading with a deep appreciation for how sections 70 pages apart interlock seamlessly into each other.
“A Visit from the Goon Squad”, on the other hand, is a book for which it’s easy to run out of superlatives. This is the kind of book I wish I had written; it’s the kind of book that makes me want to be a writer. The plot’s foci are Benny, an aging punk-rocker-turned-record-exec, and his kleptomanic assistant, Sasha, but every chapter is from the perspective of a different, peripheral character. One chapter is even a PowerPoint presentation on great “pauses” in rock music (yeah, it’s that fucking postmodern).
This is definitely the kind of book that by being seen reading it, your peers will know how hip and smart you are, and girls may wanna fuck you. okay, I can’t really substantiate that last claim from prison, but seriously, it’s that good. The story is heartfelt and relatable and has something important to say about how-we-live-today, but there are so many small, poignant snippets that are revelatory in their illumination of human nature.
For example, Bennie, the wildly successful record producer, was coaxing an underachieving act in the studio, only to suddenly be overcome with memories of past defeats and embarrassments. Specifically, the time he was doing a coke with a girl he’d been trying to smash, when the coke worked a little too well, and he had to rush to the bathroom before shitting his pants. The girl walked in on him sitting on the toilets, and caught a whiff of his execrations, which effectively annilihated his chances. The phenomena of recalling ancient losses, apropos of nothing, that still humiliate regardless of how many successes follow, is both something I’ve recently experienced and tried to convey in my writing (shittt I’ve literally lived this specific shameful memory in my actual life)…and it’s fucking horrible.
Or, as Egan put it: “…it was back, bringing waves of shame so immense they seemed to engulf whole parts of Bennie’s life and drag them away: achievements, successes, moments of pride, all of it razes to the point where there was nothing–he was nothing–a guy on a john looking up at the nauseated face of a woman he’d wanted to impress.” I dunno if that angst, that combination of wounded pride and inadequacy, has ever been so succintly captured.
“The Myth of the Eternal Return” is a study of comparative religion in the mold of Joseph Campbell and George Frazer. It eludes any sort of pithy summary; instead it’s one of most convincing apologia for- get this – Christianity! He’s almost reluctant to put forth his compelling solution to the problem of history for modern man.

2020.10.05 07:19 Metridium_Fields Salt Post: Does Anyone Else Build Decks That Only Make Sense to Them?

I’m having a bit of a crisis. With a Commander deck.
I have bunch of Selesnya generals, a large like of green, white, green-white, and colorless cards, and a vague idea of what I want to do. But unfortunately I can’t make that idea in a way that makes sense to anyone but me. Everyone wants to shove decks into neat little cubbies: hatebears, equipment, ramp, landfall, whatever. I can’t run some cards because some of these things aren’t compatible. Evidently.
I could build separate decks that fit neatly into each archetype. I could put my ramp and landfall cards into Karametra. All my hatebears into Yasharn. All my equipment into Mirri. Then everything would be kosher. My decks would fit and nobody would have a word to say to me about what I have built. I wouldn’t have to cut the equipment that I like because it’s absolutely essential that I run the stupid Collector Ouphe if I’m playing Hatebears.
Well maybe I don’t want to do that. Maybe I want to run some Hatebears but not necessarily all of them. Maybe I want to use my equipment because I bought them because I like equipment cards. Maybe I want to mash together everything in a pile that only makes sense to me.
But therein lies the issue. I’ll be forever explaining my list to the hordes of knuckleheads who rode in to the Commander format on the back of EDHREC. These people I swear came from damn Modern that insist on neat and tidy archetypes and will argue until they’re blue in the face on what is or isn’t a good card. These players whom are completely disconnected from where EDH came from. The idea that having fun, and not optimization to the decimal place, is the core of the format. Playing a card because it’s fun is every bit as justifiable as whether it’s “good” or not.
To sum up: I don’t care if you think Keeper of Fables “is shit.” I’m not going to a fucking tournament. It literally does not matter. I could come to the (Spell)table with Ashling the Pilgrim and 99 basic Mountains if I wanted to.
But that’s the issue I’ve always had. I do things my way while simultaneously agonizing over what others thought of me. I sought to impress with my unique ingenuity because I lacked the “don’t give a fuck” attitude that it took to be a true rebel. But in this moment I feel at least motivated to try and build my deck, submit it to PlayEDH, and hope it doesn’t get thrown back into my face because I’d need a flow chart and Powerpoint presentation to make anyone else understand how each and every card fits.
Just because it doesn’t fit neatly into one “kind” of deck doesn’t mean there isn’t method to the madness. That I didn’t carefully choose each and every individual card. I put a lot of thought into my pile. Leave me alone.
Anyway, all I’m saying is that individuality and expression in Commander is dead and I’m really salty about it.
The new cards are still fun though. Shout out to Emeria Shepherd.

2019.09.23 01:02 bkfinest848 Demo lesson tomorrow

Hello all,
I'm performing a demo lesson at a charter school. My lesson is on finding the central message in a folktale, fable, or myth. The lesson is anywhere between 25-30 minutes, but I want them to be the most engaging minutes for all students. So far I have a standard powerpoint and Mini lesson. The independent activity is kind of up in the air... might do a standard worksheet. But honestly, this all seems kind of dry. Any ideas? Thank you so much!

2018.04.02 09:11 ChillyAleman [3.5] Reflavoring DnD Magic

I wanted to reflavor Magic a little bit for my next campaign; I'm going to cut traditional Clerics divine casters out and will replace them with Incarnum instead. I've worked out a rough draft of a world and have mapped specific magics to certain races (though these are norms, not absolutes). Also note that in my world, Dragons will basically have Game of Thrones levels of intelligence (mostly) as they lost their powers long ago. My description is as follows.
TL;DR Divine Mages pray to the gods, exchanging their soul and faith for daily blessings. Manifesters are individuals who meditate and alter their surroundings through the force of their will. Arcanists are beings whose blood and experience has given them domain over a limited number of spells which are inexplicably attracted to them. Truenamers are savants who rewrite the code of the universe to commit spells to memory and execute changes. Artificers are also masters of the universe’s code, but write changes segment by segment and imbue supernatural properties into the mundane. The occult have alien powers from beyond, granting them tenacious mastery over spells that would make other magic-users jealous.
Magic is a broad term that includes several distinct subtypes. Magic is not fully understood by anyone, and all magic users are tapping into the same sources, although in sometimes very different ways. No corporeal creature is the source of magic, though some species tend to be blessed by it. The apparent source of magic is the spell itself. Nobody knows what they are, but spells are living, incorporeal and insubstantial beings that have the ability to warp reality.
Divine
There are many beliefs about gods, orders, pantheons and powers. None of them are tangible, it seems, but all of them have power. While some religiously-minded psychics focus inward and meditate on cosmic beings, others known as Divine Magi or Meldshapers do not focus on understanding the otherworldly empyrean entities; instead they put their faith in them, they worship them, and, often times, proselytize for them. Warriors such as Paladins and Blackguards focus primarily on becoming champions of their causes, and are granted boons against their masters’ foes. Some Sybil pray for divine aid and for dominion over flesh. A few worship the essence of existence itself, and are blessed with the quintessence of all living matter. No matter how they do it, these divine mages are among the most common users of magic in the world. The similarity between all of them is that they all are blessed with the souls of greater bodies, and they shape the soul to different parts of their body. They may shape the soulmeld to their hands and pray for their arrows to strike true. To strengthen the sanctified bond, the Meldshaper may invest in his own essence into his hands (or any other area). A few powerful meldshapers can not only shape the souls to their different body parts, but also bind them to their chakras, unlocking even deeper and more powerful effects.
Manifesters
Psionic Magic is common among elves and other long-lived, meditative races. It involves focusing the mind in order to seek understanding of one’s surroundings. Psychics who focus with enough determination are able to use their will and mind to shape the world around them. Some of them, such as psychic warriors, use their minds to bend nature. Others, such as ardents and divine minds meditate to seek meaning from the gods who grant them increased control over the fabric of space and time. Their regulation of matter has a following, and there are nearly as many manifesters as there are divine mages. Psychics measure their ability to shape their surroundings in power points. They have a limited number of power points to use daily, but they regain them after a long rest. Powerpoints are flexible in that a Psychic can boost his weaker powers by putting more effort and powerpoints into the power’s manifestation.
Arcanists
Arcanists are people who seem to have some innate camaraderie with the spells around them. Arcanists tend to have powerful personalities and spells seem to be attracted to their charismatic magnetism. However, the spells that are attracted to them are generally chosen at birth; this randomness is the reason why there are so few arcanists in the world compared to Meldshapers and Manifesters. An arcanist has little control over what spells are drawn to him, but he has complete dominance over a select few. These spells are always present in the mind of an arcanists and he can choose which ones to withhold and to dispel by commanding them forth. Arcanists in their early career learn basic spells known as cantrips and arcane spells. Later, they learn more powerful esoteric spells, and finally cabalistic spells. Because arcanists have command over the spells around them, they are able to take the energy of larger spells and divide it amongst their smaller spells. However, few arcanists have mastered combining the energy of their weaker spells to form greater ones.
Truenamers
The art of True names has been lost to the ages. At their peak, Truenamers mastered magic not through some innate connection with spells, but through studying the impenetrable mysteries of the universe itself. Although truneaming was once undoubtedly the most commonly practiced magic in the totality of creation, it is now but a whisper in the wind. These wizards of word have learned segments of the comsos’ base code and understand how certain alterations in the code can give them command over spells. Wizards study and memorize arcane scripts which bind spells into their memory. They can release these spells later by repeating their object names, although doing so erases the spell’s name from their memory until they try to learn it again. Truenamers are limited by their memory, and they must spend hours every day rehearsing the spells they wish to use before they forget them again. They begin with lesser spells known as Studies and Theses. More skilled trunamers are able to commit Treatises and Dissertations to memory. Although they can change the names memorized every day, they are limited by both the number of spells stored in their mind and the fact that they must ponder the nature of existence every morning. Of the elemental coders, only the techniques of the Artificers are still in use. However, few are called to such arduous study, and fewer still have the talent to use it. Artificers understand the nature of magic and the base code of the universe. They know how to overclock the molecular bindings in objects and how temporarily imbue them with spell energy. They do this through long study, but unlike truenamers who dedicate hours to memorize the complex programs and spells to drastically and instantly execute material changes, Artificers memorize only basic commands. While Truenamers execute entire functions in mere seconds, Artificers must spend longer amounts of time commanding elements in a sequential order to get similar results. While Truenamers memorize and dump spells frequently, Artificers attempt to permanently commit all the basic commands of the universal language to their memory. The result is a slower, but less volatile school of magical encoding.
Occult
Little is known of these extraordinary forms of magic. They are incredibly rare compared to the other magic users (who are already rare in their own right), and the only thing that is known about them is that they are granted alien abilities that are seemingly inexhaustible. Psychics and Arcanists eventually run out of steam as their grit diminishes; only Meldshapers have the same sustainability as the dark ones. The known categories of occult magic are those of the Dragonpact, the Binders, the Shadowcasters and the Warlocks. Of the dark cults, only the dragoncult is large enough in number to have any cultural impact on the world. Dragonfire Adepts and Dragon Shaman are fueled by the Mind and Soul of the Dragon respectively. Legends say that grand champions of remarkable prowess ripped the mind from the dragon king and the soul from the dragon queen, leaving only their hate inflamed hearts; their progeny having only a half-mind and half-soul were to be feeble-minded and weak of spirit, though their hearts boiled with eldritch stamina. Regardless of the verity of the tale, it is unquestionable that these two find their strength in the old, scaled ones. Adepts are able to produce spurts of flames effortlessly as they invoke the draconic spells at will. Shaman have limited abilities in both evoking elements and controlling spells, but they have stolen the presence of the dragon; they are able to bolster their allies with magical morale and heal their wounds through manifestations of vigor. Binders are rare to the point where one will likely never meet another. This is fitting for this unknown class of magic user, as they are likely to die in obscurity like the vestiges they invoke. Binders make pacts with vestiges from the void between worlds; one grants the other second life, the other grants his powers upon the binder. They say you die once naturally, and once again when your name has been uttered for the last time. Binders search far and wide for the true names of lost divinities and fabled heroes whose names are nearing their final utterance. The Binder bears the mark of the vestige they have bound in return for the mystic powers bestowed upon them, in perhaps the final occasion for the vestige to ever perceive the material world. Shadowcasters are beings who use two fundamental principles to generate limitless energy. First, they use sympathy; like effects like. Like Shaman use a doll to affect the man, shadowcasters use shadows to affect those who shed them. Second, they use reflection; each action has a reaction. When a wizard evokes fire from a spell, he questions not from whence it came or what void it has left behind. The Shadowcaster draws from the voids left in reality to fuel the opposite actions. As the Shadowcasters let loose energy drawn from the absence of energy, they need not wait a day to prepare the spell as arcanists do; while arcanists have to vacuum energy through spells, the shadows of spells quickly diffuse to the Shadowcaster, an empty receptacle waiting to be “filled” with their emptiness. Warlocks are powerful magic users who had spells hopelessly and eternally bound to them by some hidden benefactor. If Arcanists, Meldshapers and Psychic manipulate spells and Shadowcasters manipulate their opposite, Warlocks manipulate the 80% of existence that lies between. Arcanists generate matter, Shadowcasters generate anti-matter, Warlocks generate dark matter. This skill is impossible to learn for any mortal on his own; dark matter is the pool of the gods, and many do not take lightly to the fact that a figurative mosquito is engorging itself upon their mote of force. Dark and unknown powers, never known by mortal man, seemingly randomly select avatars to further their causes. Warlocks never know who their patrons are, nor what their purpose is; however, it is likely that their patrons picked them because they know exactly how their proxies will use their newfound anagogic might, and it suits their patrons’ will.

2017.11.16 15:19 BuckGB How Fable Fortune Survived the Death of Lionhead

Fable Fortune, a CCG/RPG that was supposed to be Fable Legends' Gwent, is currently in Early Access and is still kicking despite a failed Kickstarter campaign, while the main franchise and the studio behind it are pretty much dead. To figure out how that happened, Eurogamer spoke with the game's producer Craig Oman about Fable Fortune's troubled journey from a vague concept to a playable standalone game. An excerpt:
Fable Fortune, a Hearthstone-like collectible card game set in the Fable universe, sprang into life in October 2014 after the small team responsible for Fable Anniversary wrapped up the Steam version of the game. With Fable Legends development in full swing, the Anniversary team was asked to come up with an idea for a mini-game of companion game that would slot into the big Xbox One and PC project. Lionhead had form when it came to Fable companion pieces, of course, with Fable: Coin Golf and Fable: Pub Games both past successes.
The idea to make a collectible card game came to the team almost immediately. Lionhead designer Mike West, a big physical collectible card game fan, had unsuccessfully pitched a CCG for Fable 2 years prior. Blizzard's Hearthstone, though, had made CCGs cool, and so a CCG for Fable Legends was a much easier sell.
Fable Fortune's design mantra was established early doors: even though it was a card game, it had to be Fable. It had to have the famous Fable humour. It had to have quests. It had to have some kind of god and evil morality system.
Lionhead wanted to integrate the game into Fable Legends, but also make it so players could access it externally. The idea was while you were in Legends waiting for a match or your friends to turn up, you could play Fortune for a bit, then jump straight back into Legends. And if the developers could get Fable Fortune onto mobile phones and tablets, players would have something Fable-related to play while they were away from their Xbox One.
Why would you bother with Fortune? Apart from it being fun to play, you could also unlock items for use in Fable Legends - and vice versa. Play Fable Legends and you would unlock card packs for Fable Fortune. Play Fable Fortune and you would unlock items for use out on the battlefield in Fable Legends. That sort of thing.
Lionhead's leadership team liked the idea, and told the group to get to work on a PowerPoint that would hopefully secure approval from Microsoft itself. This is where the fun with gates began.
Microsoft Studios uses a gating system to not only greenlight projects, but act as internal milestones. The requirements per gate vary depending on project size, but all projects face scrutiny. When you pass through a gate you unlock some development funds. Gate number one: concept approval. Pass that gate and the Fable Fortune team would unlock enough money to build a prototype.
In late 2014, Kudo Tsunoda was in charge of Microsoft's first-party studios. Tsunoda, the public figurehead of Kinect, was in the process of taking over Xbox game development from the outgoing Phil Harrison. The Fable Fortune development team would have to get the thumbs up from Tsunoda before moving onto pre-production. It turns out the gate number one meeting involved not on Tsunoda, Phil Harrison and the Lionhead leadership team, but Xbox boss Phil Spencer, who alongside his entourage was on one of his regular tours of the UK. No pressure then.
"This was very much like, yeah, if we fuck up, then the project gets canned and we have to go and find some other work to do," remembers producer Craig Oman. Fable Fortune, which ex-colleagues tell me was "Oman's baby", was pitched via a rudimentary PowerPoint presentation with 2D graphics viewed from a top-down perspective. But the essence of what the game was was there.
The high-profile audience made for a nerve-wracking presentation. Phil Spencer, Phil Harrison and Kudo Tsunoda, three powerhouses of Xbox, laid in wait. But it was Tsunoda who worried Oman most.
"Phil's great. He's real easy to talk to," Oman says says. "Kudo is... I really like Kudo but he can be very difficult to present to.
"He might not even look like he's paying attention to you, but he's normally taking it all in. But he wants to know the answer to the question he's got. He doesn't really give a shit about the presentation you've spent two months preparing for and you've practised or that you've got this flow ready to go. He'll have a question and he just wants the answer now. You can't just say, well we're going to get to that in seven slides' time, if I can just take you on the journey... he will be like, no, go straight here."
This description of Kudo Tsunoda's meeting style - backed up to me by another ex-Lionhead member of staff - explains the nervousness Oman felt during the Fable Fortune concept pitch. But, Oman says, it was something he got used to - and even managed to prepare for.
"He did that - every single presentation we ever did with Kudo," Oman says. "You learn after a while, he's just going to throw you a curve ball, so you've got to be able to move around. It's infuriating and difficult to work with, but it's good because he knows what he wants and he doesn't want to mess around. So if you don't have an answer to the question he's got, you're done. You're just wasting his time. But once you know that's coming, it's a bit easier. You tend to frontload as much stuff as well, so it's all there."
Fable Fortune's concept presentation was high level, as you'd expect, and designed for those unfamiliar with the CCG genre. It ran through how the game would work and had a section devoted to explaining how CCGs work. It turns out Oman needn't have worried about the latter.
"We didn't really know how much the execs would know about CCGs," Oman says. "Mike [West, Fable Fortune creative director] was up doing his talk, and I was standing off to the side. I was just behind Phil Spencer. Mike's talking away and I see Phil open up Hearthstone, and I was like, yes!
"We asked, are you familiar with CCGs? And he's got his account already open. It's like, good, okay, we don't have to explain why this is a good space to go into.
"There was somebody else there, one of the finance guys, he was this uber Magic the Gathering fan. He was like, I've got a $50,000 Magic collection, so you don't have to explain this to me. There were a couple of people who were big votes who were like, yes!"
X-Factor style, the votes were cast, and Fable Fortune passed the first gate. But the thumbs up came with difficult questions, the most difficult of which came from Phil Spencer himself: how Fable Fortune would beat Hearthstone?
"We were like, what the fuck are you talking about?" Oman says. "We're talking about a very small team that's trying to do something that's inside of Legends. But Phil's brain is already working: well look, if you're going to do this, do it properly. How are you going to take them on?
"And that was like, oh shit! Actually, that's where we should be thinking. Nobody's saying we're going to beat Hearthstone. It's massive. But if you're going to make a football game, you've got to ask yourself, how are you going to beat FIFA or Pro Evo? You should be setting your ambitions right at the top."
Inspired by Spencer's question, the developers began to think of Fable Fortune more as a standalone game than a Fable Legends mini-game. They explored making Fable Fortune a separate app that would be "deeplinked" with Legends on an Xbox One. So, you would be in Legends, press a button and load up Fortune as a different app. Because the Xbox One can run a game and an app at the same time, both Legends and Fortune could theoretically run on the console at the same time without ever shutting down - and at full quality.

2017.11.09 14:57 BuckGB Remembering Runic Games

After Runic Games was shut down by Perfect World, Kotaku reached out to one of the studio's co-founders Travis Baldree, who was happy to reminisce about his times at Runic Games. The resulting retrospective article goes over the original pitch for Torchlight, Runic's almost successful partnerships with Microsoft and Turbine, the general atmosphere at the now-defunct studio, and much more. An excerpt:
We pitched Torchlight (when it was still codenamed Delvers) to Big Fish Games here in Seattle. No pitch was off the table! I had a horrible cold, and was loopy with Sudafed. Their conference room was oddly set up, with a table projector, but no nearby power outlets, and a distant wall that was at a 30 degree angle. I stretched the cable from my laptop to an outlet high on that wall, balancing my computer on some books, while the PowerPoint presentation was projected trapezoid-ally at an off-angle. I can barely remember anything from the pitch - I’m sure it was awful. And someone leaned forward over the table afterward and said, “this is all great, but we don’t really make... games.”
We sat down with Frank Gibeau at EA Redwood Shores, did our song and dance, and at the conclusion, he said: “The ink will be dry on the contract next week”. We never heard another peep.
I can still clearly remember my first visit to Perfect World’s old offices in Beijing, wandering through the long tables of artists and engineers and the incredible (and colorful) proliferation of animal-themed humidifiers scattered everywhere, blurting steam. The big tiled bathrooms, cold because of open windows, where everyone was smoking cigarettes.
Zynga contacted us out of the blue. They had been looking at leasing Flagship’s old office space in San Francisco, and had seen a video of Mythos running there. We met with Bing Gordon and a few other folks in their old offices, seated at a table covered with dry-erase scribbles. We talked about their games, and at some point, Bing leaned back in his chair, jutted out his lower jaw and made suggestive wiggling motions with the first two fingers of each hand as he said, “And now, I’m going to part the kimono,” and prepared to divulge their secrets.
I wish you could see the first technical prototype of HOB - I used Wind Waker models, animations, and effects. We had a little Link running around on Outset island, pushing blocks, throwing rocks, cutting grass, swimming, scaling walls, and shouting ‘hya!’ from an isometric camera, just to make sure that the fundamental navigation would work.
It took us so long to find a name for the studio, that in the interim we were incorporated as ‘Surprise Truck’, Max’s vote for the company name. Since my phone number and address were used, I got a steady stream of phone calls asking if ‘Surprise Trucking’ could assist in a cross-country move.
We pitched Torchlight to Microsoft and had extensive meetings, a company vetting, and it all seemed to be going so well. To our shock, at the end of the arduous process, they decided they’d rather have us make a Fable game for them. We declined. Right before Torchlight shipped, a Microsoft rep came up to me at our first PAX and cried “Why didn’t you come to us to publish this?”
We came very close to becoming part of Turbine, and working on a Hobbit themed title. I had the best Old Fashioned I’ve ever had at our first dinner with them.

Looking to take some of the fabled Sled Development courses, specifically, Microsoft courses, i.e.:Excel, Powerpoint, Word.
My recent searches have proved unfruitful so I would like to know if anyone knows the tips and tricks for navigating ALMS. (Army sites always have tips and tricks)
Thanks for your time an attention
