2024.05.14 17:33 DaveHervey Beverage market Cannabis legalization: soon grass instead of hops? May 8, 2024 in market report

Cannabis has now been – at least partially – legal in Germany for a good five weeks. Will there soon be THC drinks in this country? Will Germans then drink less alcohol? And where can the substances actually be consumed? While the answers to this will probably take a while to come, many, including those in the beverage industry, are looking with excitement to Canada, where marijuana has been legal since 2018.
The approval there quickly led to the introduction of a wealth of new mixed drinks. The beverage manufacturer Truss Beverages from the province of Ontario brought non-alcoholic drinks enriched with THC and CBD in a wide variety of, mostly fruity, flavors and different, precisely defined potencies onto the market under the brand names XMG, Little Victory, Mollo and Bedfellows. Truss is a joint venture between brewing company Molson Coors and cannabis company Hexo.
THC drinks soon in Germany too? It's no wonder that, given the opportunities offered by a completely new category, companies in this country are already positioning themselves to be among the pioneers if cannabis extracts are also approved as beverage additives here. For example, the Hamburg company “Good Drinks” is currently discussing whether THC in its drinks could be a useful brand addition, as co-owner Frank Maßen reports.
Good Drinks is currently on the market with vodka and energy drinks, for example. Well-known Hamburg restaurateurs such as Axel Strehlitz and John Schierhorn, both of whom have deep roots in the local club scene, are involved in the start-up. Maßen sees THC as a logical progression for a brand that has partying in its DNA, but “the idea of introducing a THC variant raises a lot of questions, especially in terms of brand image and acceptance,” said Maßen.
Discussions are currently underway internally about how to handle this potential expansion without damaging the essence of the brand, which is strongly linked to the club culture. There are intensive discussions with the licensors of the Hamburg Club Combine, which launched the brand together with Good Drinks to support the local club scene as a social business ( we reported ).
Some THC drinks already on the market in Canada Some THC drinks already on the market in Canada (Product photos: Truss Beverages) Breweries would certainly also be potential manufacturers. But the German Brewers Association considers it unlikely that many breweries could jump on the cannabis bandwagon. “Germany is and remains the country of beer drinkers. With 1,500 breweries and almost 8,000 brands, we have a beer variety that is unique in the world,” says Managing Director Holger Eichele. Beer is still the national drink, although consumption has been declining for years, as in many other European countries.
“Edibles” are still banned under EU law Apart from that, an introduction would not yet be legally possible, because drinks with THC or CBD fall under “edibles” in the EU; This refers to foods and drinks that contain cannabis. They are therefore affected by the Novel Food Regulation, explains the managing director of the Bavarian Cannabis Association, Wenzel Cerveny. This means that they can only be placed on the market once they have been tested as safe by the EU.
“This is something that a small manufacturer cannot do - this test would have to be initiated by a large company,” says Cerveny. He himself is currently working with the small brewery “Unertl” from Haag in Upper Bavaria on an alcohol-free beer with hemp extract. However, without THC or CBD, but with hemp as a special taste.
To provide a more detailed explanation, the EU states that there has been no evidence of any significant consumption of the individual substance CBD (cannabidiol) before May 15, 1997. It is therefore assessed as novel in the European Commission's Novel Food Catalog under the entry “Cannabinoids” and therefore requires its own approval. As long as this does not exist, such products are not marketable. The same applies to products containing THC.
Alcohol consumption in Canada fell after legalization It's not just new products that could affect the German beverage industry if they are allowed in the future. Using Canada as an example, it is clear to see that cannabis consumption has a direct influence on consumers' drinking behavior. A joint study by the University of Manitoba, Memorial University and the University of Toronto has shown that Canadians are drinking significantly less alcohol since they were legally allowed to consume cannabis.
For example, the study published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence observed an average monthly decline in beer consumption of 136 hectoliters per 100,000 people after legalization. In this context, the authors speak of a “substitution effect”, in which consumers choose cannabis instead of beer as their intoxicant of choice.
Mixing with alcohol is not advisable Both together are considered by “connoisseurs” to be not very digestible. Even Truss Beverages advises against consuming its THC drinks mixed with alcohol on its website, citing recommendations from the Canadian Health Authority. Again and again, the product description in connection with the dosage is about ensuring a “controlled and predictable consumption experience”.
Clear warnings label drinks containing THC in Canada. Clear warnings label drinks containing THC in Canada. (Photo: Truss Beverages) A look at the 2022/23 financial year shows how strong cannabis legalization can have on the alcohol industry. Accordingly, Canada received more excise tax revenue from cannabis ($660 million) than from wine ($205 million) and beer ($450 million) combined.
It is still completely unclear whether the industry will have to adapt to similar shifts in this country. The German Brewers Association is rather relaxed: It is still far too early to speculate about possible effects, emphasizes DBB boss Eichele. “There are studies from abroad where markets have been examined in more detail. However, these studies cannot be transferred one-to-one to Germany; the starting points are far too different. We don’t expect any visible effects in this country.”
Where smoking is allowed, you can also smoke weed The question of how to deal with marijuana users in the catering industry is already very current; It is being hotly debated all over the country. While the use of the drug indoors is usually prohibited, there is scope for freedom in outdoor areas and, for example, beer gardens.
The German Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga) says that initial feedback from the industry shows a tendency not to allow the consumption of marijuana. The legal situation varies from federal state to federal state, as Dehoga managing director and legal expert Jürgen Benad knows: “Where smoking is still permitted according to the legal regulations of the federal states, cannabis consumption is also generally permitted.”
But it is also clear: “Every restaurateur is allowed to prohibit guests from consuming cannabis – even in smoking bars – based on their house rules,” says Benad. This also applies to outdoor catering. Cannabis may not be consumed “in the immediate presence” of minors. What this specifically means in the catering industry will not be easy to define in individual cases.
Zero tolerance or laissez-faire? While the beer gardens in Munich, for example, will remain consumption-free until further notice due to Bavaria's zero-tolerance policy, people in Berlin are more open-minded. “Since the cannabis law was approved, the consumption of cannabis in the catering industry has been considered synonymous with the consumption of cigarettes and other tobacco products,” says Tony Ettelt-Brundiers, managing director of “Zenner”, a cultural and gastronomic ensemble consisting of a vineyard, beer garden and organic ice cream parlor , concert hall, club space and event location in the capital.
“We are not questioning this law,” said Ettelt-Brundiers. “Regardless of what our guests smoke in the Zenner’s outdoor areas, we ask everyone to be considerate, especially if other guests could feel disturbed by someone else’s smoke, regardless of its origin.” This principle of mutuality Consideration has worked surprisingly well in Zenner for more than 200 years, which the aforementioned amendment to the law should not change, according to the managing director.
How much cannabis will ultimately change the beverage industry and social life surrounding beverages is still entirely unknown.

If you're constantly tired and lacking energy, it's high time to start combating it. You won't be able to adhere to the entire list of things I'm presenting below. The idea is to try all of them and see which ones yield the best results and suit you the most.
If you consistently incorporate several things from the list below for a period of time, I guarantee you'll have more energy every day. Read the following ways to beat fatigue and gain energy for the whole day.

1. Work with your biological clock

Our bodies have a natural ebb and flow of energy throughout the day. We start with a slow flow of energy right after waking up (even after a full 8 hours of sleep). The peak of energy hits at 9 a.m. It's completely natural to feel the need to rest around noon. At this time, we need a nap and rest. The second energy spike is felt in the early evening. That's when energy starts gradually leaving us, ending in exhaustion right before sleep. Once we understand this natural energy flow, we can more effectively match actions and tasks to the time of day.

2. Sing out loud

Whether you're working alone or with someone, a quick rock song is a great way to overcome fatigue. The key here is to choose a song whose lyrics everyone knows. Just 3 minutes of loud singing to an upbeat song and you'll feel a sudden rush of adrenaline.

3. Drink Yerba Mate

Yerba energizes both body and mind. It doesn't contain caffeine but rather mateine, so it doesn't cause heart palpitations or irritability. After drinking Yerba, you'll feel a great boost of energy. Now you'll easily handle all the duties and tasks that await you that day.

4. Clear your stuffy nose

Blocked sinuses cause feelings of tiredness and irritability. Sinus decongestant tablets will help clear them, giving you clarity of mind and thought.

5. Change socks during the day

This is an incredible trick. Take a clean pair of socks to work and change them halfway through the day. You'll be surprised by how refreshed you'll feel. Feeling fresh will give you more energy.

6. Eat a piece of chocolate

Not too much, just a few squares. Chocolate gives us an endorphin boost (not to mention the energy provided by the caffeine in chocolate). Dark chocolate contains more caffeine than milk chocolate.

7. Have an energetic afternoon snack

A small, healthy snack with low sugar and protein content a few hours after lunch will help sustain your energy until the end of the day. You can have, for example: a mix of nuts/dried fruits, low-fat yogurt, apple with peanut butter, fruit smoothie, granola bar.

8. Take a short nap

Nap, but do it in a chair. Don't lie down on the bed because you won't feel like getting up later. The nap should be short - 5-10 minutes maximum. Longer sleep will have the opposite effect and you'll feel tired for the rest of the day.

9. Wear bright colors

This trick is related to how people perceive colors. People dressed in dark colors are perceived as boring, gloomy, and introverted. Wearing bright and colorful colors will make people see you as cheerful and open, which will improve your mood and energy levels.

10. Eat plenty of berries

Red, blue, and purple berries contain a lot of anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are powerful antioxidants that, besides a range of positive properties, will also boost your energy levels.

11. Afternoon gossip

A bit of afternoon gossip with friends or teasing with colleagues will liven up your mind. It works because you give your brain a break and detach yourself from stressful thoughts for a while. A few minutes of mental break refreshes and adds energy.

12. Flirt

Flirting is fun, harmless (if innocent), and very effective in boosting energy. Nothing speeds up heart rate and improves blood flow like a good flirt.

13. Wake up at the same time every day

Every day, even on weekends, wake up at the same time. Otherwise, you'll have trouble falling asleep late in the evening or worse, you'll be sleepy when you should be fully awake and energetic. The most important thing is to go to bed and get up at the same time every day. If you want to feel refreshed and reset at a specific time, don't eat for 12-16 hours. For example, if you want to feel refreshed at 2 p.m., have your last meal between 10 p.m. and midnight. At 2 p.m., have your first meal, and your body will consider this moment as the start of a new day.

14. Lavender aromatherapy

Studies have shown that the scent of lavender increases our alertness and mental agility. Lavender aroma was administered to a portion of the group, for 3 minutes before the study began, and then everyone was asked to complete math tests. The aromatherapy group completed the tests faster and more accurately.

15. Drink plenty of water

Dehydration is one of the causes of fatigue. Drinking less than 8 glasses of water a day can lead to fatigue and lack of energy. Every day, you need to drink at least 2 liters of water (more during hot weather). From today, drink the recommended amount of water daily and see if your energy level increases.

16. Eat low glycemic index foods (low-carb foods)

Carbohydrates with a high glycemic index are more easily absorbed by the body. This leads to large fluctuations in blood sugar levels and thus large energy spikes - rapid increase as well as rapid decrease.
High glycemic index foods to avoid include: white bread, potatoes, sugar, breakfast cereals. Low glycemic index foods include: fruits, vegetables, whole grain bread, pasta, and other low-carb foods.

17. Avoid energy drinks

Energy drinks almost instantly increase energy levels after consumption, but this is a short-term effect. Energy drinks act like a credit card - you take now, but in the future, you have to pay off the debt. After the drink wears off, there is an energy deficit, which will make your fatigue even greater than before you drank it.

18. Eat more soluble fiber

Soluble fiber slows down the rate of sugar absorption. It evens out the energy level and prevents fluctuations. (Consuming fiber is also recommended for people suffering from constipation.) Foods containing fiber include: nuts, grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, and oats.

19. Drink coffee but in moderation

Coffee and caffeinated beverages increase energy levels, but excessive use can harm you immensely. Drink coffee only in the morning to avoid having trouble falling asleep in the evening, and consequently, feeling even worse the next day.

20. Don't forget about ascorbic acid (=vitamin C)

Remember your daily dose of citrus fruits (e.g. Drink orange juice every day) or vitamin C in tablets. Research shows a relationship between vitamin C deficiency and chronic fatigue. Vitamin C also aids in the absorption of nutrients from food.

21. Vitamin B complex

B vitamins exhibit many different properties, but most of them are involved in the process of converting blood sugars into energy. To ensure an adequate intake of B vitamins, start following a balanced diet.

22. Play games to relax

Games stimulate the mind while simultaneously relaxing it. When we play, we forget about problems and everyday matters. A short break will positively affect your energy level . Instead of focusing solely on a project and trying not to fall asleep, play an online game for a while and relax. Just remember not to overdo it with the time - you wouldn't want your boss to give you a reprimand. 5 minutes of gaming is enough to find the energy needed for the next hour.

23. Cold water on the face

Splashing your face with cold water will wash away the fatigue and stress from the entire day. Jumping into a pool or taking a cold shower will have the same effect. A shower stimulates metabolism and the entire circulatory system. Just a bit of water is enough to feel energized.

24. Quit smoking

People who quit smoking have 2-3 times more energy than before. Nicotine disrupts sleep quality, so smokers sleep worse than non-smokers. This often makes smokers feel tired, frustrated, and lacking in zest for life.

25. Smell citrus

Scents of citrus fruits (orange, lemon, lime) stimulate us to act and make us feel more refreshed. Instead of regular balm, use a lemon-scented balm, and use orange-scented shower gel.

26. Eat smaller meals but more frequently

Eat small meals but more often. This way, your energy will remain at a steady level. However, avoid snacking on low-nutrient, empty-calorie foods. Such products only cause a short-term energy boost followed by a total drop.

27. Stand up, stretch, and take a few deep breaths

Stretch your arms, back, legs, and neck. Take a few deep breaths through your nose, hold the air, and exhale slowly. Repeat the exercise several times. It will take you 30 seconds, and you'll immediately feel better. When you sit down, you'll have a clear mind and the strength needed to tackle difficult and boring tasks.

28. Drink tea

Recent studies by University College London (UCL) have shown that drinking 4-6 cups of tea a day lowers the level of stress hormone and increases vitality.

29. Look on the bright side

An optimistic approach to life helps maintain a high level of energy. Of course, the worst things in life can happen, regardless of how much you worry. Look for the positive aspects of every event and stop being constantly tired.

30. Take a mini vacation

Take one day off and do whatever you feel like doing. A day without work and obligations. Use this day only for pleasure. The next day, you'll return to work motivated and full of energy.

31. Have a big breakfast but a light lunch

A heavy lunch, especially one consisting of a large amount of carbohydrates (e.g., a hamburger with fries), eaten at midday during work, will drain all your energy and make you sluggish for the rest of the day. Instead, have a substantial breakfast at home in the morning. It will provide you with the energy you need for the whole day. A big breakfast not only helps you avoid midday sluggishness but also makes you more productive in the morning. It's a double win.

32. Add ginseng to your diet

Ginseng is a well-known stimulant and energy booster. Ginseng is an adaptogen, meaning it helps to adapt to stressful situations, strengthens the immune system, and increases energy levels.

33. Walk on tiptoes

While walking or even sitting, try rolling your toes on the ground. This stimulates the circulatory system, which in turn provides extra oxygen and fuel (glucose) to the whole body. You'll have more energy and regain clarity of thinking. You can do this right now.

34. Get organized

When everything around you is tidy and organized, you won't have to waste valuable energy thinking about millions of little things.

35. Eliminate stress

Sometimes stress is necessary, e.g., it helps us finish a project on time, motivates us to keep going, but most of the time it's just an energy drain. Try to differentiate and eliminate the stress that has a destructive impact on you, and use the saved energy in a more productive way.

36. Love more often

Maintain a regular flow of endorphins (happiness hormones) and you'll have more energy, a better mood, and a clearer mind.

37. Start exercising

If you lead a sedentary lifestyle, the mere thought of intense physical exercise probably exhausts you. However, if you start moving, gradually increasing the intensity of the exercises, you'll feel a huge surge of energy and well-being.

38. Clear your to-do list of unimportant tasks

If you have an absurdly long to-do list, impossible to complete in a set time, you'll feel immense fatigue just thinking about what you have to do. Remove from the list all the things you don't want or don't necessarily need to do. Try to delegate each of these tasks to someone else or move them to a list of things you might do in the future. Limiting the to-do list to the most urgent and important matters will give you the energy to act.

39. Take a walk

Go outside for some fresh air and take a brisk walk to increase blood flow. The sight of sunlight will signal your body that it's not yet time for sleep.

40. Opt for lean protein without fats and carbohydrates

Eating lean protein will provide you with a longer feeling of fullness. It will also prevent spikes in blood sugar levels and thus maintain your energy level at a steady pace. Lean protein options include: fish, seafood, lean pork, or chicken breast ("white meat").

41. Get enough sleep at night

Each of us needs about 7-8 hours of sleep per day to feel fully rested. Sleeping less than 6 hours per day creates a "sleep debt" that is extremely difficult to recover from. If you sleep long enough, it should take you about 30 minutes to fall asleep. However, if you fall asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow, it means you suffer from sleep deprivation.

42. Listen to the radio while working

It has long been known that music stimulates our pleasure center located in the brain. Put on headphones and listen to your favorite music while working - this will make you feel energized and increase your productivity.

43. Lose a few kilograms

To lose weight, exercise, drink plenty of water, and avoid simple sugars - these are also actions that have a positive impact on energy levels. Losing excess fat will simultaneously generate additional energy. You'll feel lighter, and everything will seem easier. Weight loss will make you feel bursting with energy.
However, be cautious of all short-term, miracle diets. Not consuming enough calories per day will make you feel even more tired and exhausted. Instead, try to take small steps and change your lifestyle permanently.

44. Go to the gym in the morning

Many people go to the gym after work. Try going there in the morning, and you'll gain energy that will last you through the day. Of course, you'll have to wake up an hour or even two earlier, but you'll be able to go to bed earlier than usual. Working out at the gym will induce the release of endorphins, which, being happiness hormones, will make you feel good and more efficient throughout the day. In summary - you'll spend the same amount of time at the gym, but you'll get a bonus in the form of additional energy.

45. Avoid drinking alcohol in the middle of the day

If you need energy for the entire day, steer clear of alcohol consumption until dinner, even if it's just a glass of wine or one beer. Alcohol heavily sedates, leaving you with little energy to tackle afternoon tasks.

46. Don't drink alcohol before bedtime

Alcohol disrupts deep and restful sleep, so even if you get the same amount of hours as usual, you'll feel more tired. Never consume alcohol before going to bed, and you'll wake up more refreshed.

47. Laugh

Laughter is a great remedy for fatigue. Laugh regularly to maintain a good mood throughout the day. Surround yourself with funny people or visit satirical websites daily or subscribe to a joke of the day.

48. Eat eggs

People who eat eggs for breakfast (as opposed to those who eat bread or other carbohydrates) have more energy and consume less during the next meal.

49. Get your thyroid checked

Chronic fatigue can be a symptom of hypothyroidism. This condition is caused by a deficiency of thyroid hormones, leading to a slowdown in metabolic processes. If you constantly lack strength and energy, see a doctor and request thyroid tests.

50. Dress nicely

The better you dress and the better you look, the better you'll feel, and consequently, the more energy you'll have. Put some effort into choosing your work attire, wait for compliments from coworkers, and become the most energetic employee in the company.

51. Practice yoga

Stretching, slow, controlled movements, and focus on breath reduce tension and alleviate stress. With yoga, you'll sleep better, feel more relaxed, and maintain good mental health.

52. Add yogurt to your diet

Yogurt with live bacterial cultures will help maintain a healthy digestive system and better absorb all the nutrients from food. This will make you feel better and have more energy. Yogurts are also a wonderful low-fat snack.

53. Do aerobic and cardio exercises

Aerobic exercises increase blood flow, delivering more oxygen to all organs (including the brain). They will increase your endurance and stamina – even in performing duties and mundane work. Regular cardio exercises will give you more energy every day.

54. Lower your blood pressure

Besides being one of the causes of heart attacks, high blood pressure also makes us feel tired. If you haven't seen your family doctor in a while, go and ask for your blood pressure to be measured.

55. Treat yourself to a massage

A massage will relax tense muscles, making you feel more relaxed. Being more relaxed means being happier and more productive. A quick back massage at work, done by a colleague, will give you energy for the rest of the day.

56. Socialize

Turn off the internet and go meet your friends. People are social beings. To be healthy and have lots of energy, we need regular social interactions.

2024.03.27 16:19 nokky1234 Trying to not have the same nutrition desaster I had in my first Ironman in my next Ironman

Hello people,
In my first Ironman I played my planned nutrition until the run, when I came off with the feeling of carrying a sack of cobblestones in my entire GI section.
Only for the last 15k of the marathon I kind of felt okay, got back into my regular rhythm and being able to digest nutrition.
I trained with Power Bar for months before the Ironman with no issues. On the bike leg, I had my 16 Power bar hydro Gels and Gatorade endurance from the race for more electrolytes and carbs. Because two 500ml gel bottles wont cut it for 6 hours. Gatorade Endurance was not purchasable here in Germany at that time (or i was unaware). Now some online shops carry it with a catastrophic markup which I'm not ready to pay. Maybe drinking 5 bottles of gatorade endurance made the issues?
Now this Year my main race is Challenge Roth, which is all powerbar on bike and run, and I'd like to not feel this way in Roth.
Can anyone explain to me why and how this happens and how you possibly solve it? Did I possibly overcook the bike, so my stomach possibly went on a digestion break for a couple of hours? I took it easy and aimed for a 6hr bike split, which turned out to be 5:58h despite the tragic accident in hamburg 23 — so spot on for my bikesplit.
On the run, I spent a consecutive 30 minutes on the restroom trying to go number two to no success, of course. I even tried voluntary vomiting to no success as well.
I loved racing that Ironman but would love to not have these issues in the future haha.
What do you do if you feel like a sack of stones after the bike? Not take on any nutrition, run super easy, drink Coca-Cola, walk until you feel better, give the stomach time to digest? Big question marks here.
Thanks in advance!

I consider almost every type of food good for a diabetic person. With good glucose management there are almost no limitations to what you can eat with a few exceptions.
I learned that for every type of food you have to dose insulin a different way. For some food I dose insulin even 1 hour after mean, where for others 1.5 hour before the meal. More on that later.

GI = (glycemic index)

Starting of with what I consider a forbidden food:
- Hard Candy, Jellies (Alternative to candy is any type of chocolate)

What I consider once in a while food:
- White bread, buns (Many gluten free breads have low IG are are great alternative (give almost flat glucose curve))
- Rice (Alternative to rice is barley groats 25 GI)
- Pasta (Alternative to pasta is low IG pasta 38 GI or pasta based on green pea)
- Hamburgers, Pizza, Sushi

What I consider a great food for diabetic:
- Spices (all kinds of spices, add them to food for tasty flavor)
- Sauces (sou sauce for cooking meat, ketchup for toasts, mayo)
I think it's perectly fine to go even 220mg/dl one a day for 30 minutes if you want to eat a chocolate or something. I used to go high but now 99% in range.
Ideas for small meals:
- spinnach with bacon
- scrambled eggs
- a protein bar
- a protein cookie
- fried cheese
- any "kinder" brand snack
- "Asia style" konjac pasta + 150 normal fruit joghurt
- 100g of dry smoked pork sausage
- 200g of cottage cheese
- mozarella with tomatoes
- 200ml of tomato soup
- any kind of meat

Ideas for meals:
- 300g Ground beef + 2 eggs. Cook separately and mix.
- Ice creams: 200g of strawberries + 200ml of 30% cream.
- 150g of barley groats + brocolli + steak
- a toast: 2 slices of gluten free bread, ketchup, cheese, meat. Brush the slices with butter on the inside. Add ketchup to each slice. Add 2 slices of cheese and one slice of cold meat. Grill in the toaster oven.

2. Eating high GI food

I find two ways to eat high GI food such as rice or chocolate.

approach 1:
20g carbs in chocolate
I start with glucose of ~ 130mg/dl and dose 4 units of insulin. 3 for meal, and 1 to bring down the glucose to 100mg/dl. I know that insulin starts to work most strongly between 1h-2h and even despite that, the carbs from chocolate will increase my glucose level at a higher rate. That's why I take 3 units to counter that effect.
50 minutes after injection i eat the chocolate. 1h30min-2h after injection my glucose should be at it's peak and from now on will start to declines. I observe my glucose level and when glucose is at ~120mg/dl I eat additional 10g of carbs to flatten curve. 20 minutes after eating carbs my glucose should be stable and around 100mg/dl.

approach 2:
20g carbs in chocolate
I start with a glucose of ~110mg/d. I eat a big steak, some salad and barley groats + some oil. Lot's of of fats and low IG food. I dose a normal ratio of insulin for my meal. After 1.5h of eating a meal I dose 2 units of insulin for 20g of carbs from the chocolate and eat it after 5-10 minutes. Thanks to fats in my digestive system the carbs will not increase as quickly as If I were to eat on an empty stomach.

3. Eating pizza

Pizza is a tricky meal and I adjst the ratio everythime but have some general rules.
Homemade italian pizza has around 70g carbs for 100g.
Average takeaway pizza has between 20-50g carbs for 100g. It all depends on how much crust there is, how much cheese is on top, if there are any peppers, meat on top.
I always eat piza with garlic sauce :)

Let's consider a takeaway pizza example 25g per 100g
After eating 100g of pizza, first noticable raise is glucose level appear 1h45m after eating it. It's a first spike. After around 2.5-3h there is a second spike.
It's super important to split bolus and don't give additional insulin when you see first spike and sugar level increasing or you will end with hypoglycemia.

my approach 500g of pizza:
I eat 1 slice every 5 minutes. 5 slices across 25minutes
1 hours after eating a slice i dose 30% of the bolus for a single slice. For each following slice I want 5 minutes and do the same.
Over the span of 25 minutes i dose insulin for all the slices.
Whole reason of doing it is not to inject a full bolus at once because you never know how many carbs are in the pizza. More smaller injections give you more control over descresing glucose level than if you were to go full bolus mode.
2.5 hours after eating a pizza I inject remaining 70% of the bolus for each slice. I also do it in 5 minutes cycles.

My glucose level may and will go above 200mg/dl but only for a couple of minutes and will decreate to ~100mg/dl in 1 hour.

I hope some people may find it useful.
Thanks and take care of yourself <3

2024.03.11 22:07 diseptikon77 Should I just get it done?

I’ll spare the longer details but I have been monitoring my gall bladder for polyps for the past 12ish years. I had to change health care insurance in the last few years so I had to bring to their attention that I was doing semi regular monitoring of my gall bladder. I have since been getting regular ultrasounds but now have gotten to the point where my gall bladder is so full of stones they cannot view the polyps anymore. Pair this with the fact that I have a few “attacks” over the years, less than 10 total but wake up around 3 am with extreme pain coming from what I assume to be the gall bladder trying to assist with digesting my food and squeezing the stones in turn. I am also worried about a stone becoming lodged in the duct and I know there’s no real way to determine the odds of this happening but it sounds awful and don’t want to have to have emergency surgery.
I eat what I’d like to call “semi” healthy, that is a salad for lunch and sometimes home meals for dinner. I do love me hamburgers from In N Out, Habit, and the occasional whopper or Big Mac. I love Chik Fil A and Popeyes chicken sandwiches. I eat ice cream and have a home coffee bar which includes iced coffee in the morning and sometimes an espresso drink in the afternoon. I demolish See’s candy when I get my hands on it.
I am real worried about having to give all of this up which is really the only reason I’ve held on to my gall bladder, plus to me it’s just weird to remove something inside of me.
I have never done a HIDA scan and am wondering if I should request one to see how things are at this stage of the game.
Or is it just time to have it removed?

“H-Hello? C-Can you hear me? Are you feeling alright?”
“S-Stay calm. I don’t want you hurting yourself…”
“T-There you go, I-I’m a friendly face, I won't bite…”
“Tell me, are you feeling alright physically?”

“Alright, just take it easy…”

“How about mentally? A-Are you scared, hopeless, or confused? Is there something else on your mind?”
“I-I know I’m a stranger, b-but I wouldn’t dare hurt you…”

“I don’t know who you are… B-But, I’d like to!”
“Hey, take it easy; let me unchain you.”

“There you go. I told you I won’t hurt you, and I mean that.”
“I-I know you are scared – b-but give me a chance…”
“I uh… I-I know it's wrong… C-Can you blame me?”
“Your presence makes the room shine…”
“Even in your own unique way, you can free a dark soul…”
“I know I’m not well in the head…”

“I-I don’t know what it means to be ‘well’...”

“Yet, when I see you – my life suddenly has meaning…”
“No longer am I living a life with no purpose.
I’m living a life to see you.”
“Your body is stunning, but your face is dashing!”

“I-I just hope you can see past the darkness…”
“I-I want you – b-because you calm my soul.”
“With you, I-I have a reason to live…”

“D-Do you accept my offer? I’ll take care of you until the end of time if you do the same for me…”

DO YOU ACCEPT?

No? Continue To “DENIAL”

-DENIAL-

Their chest and arms go slack, eyes staring into the infinite recesses of their mind.
Tears well up in their eyelids as their hands begin to quake; hurriedly, they turn around.
Harsh gasps at the air escape their mouth with their breath faltering, its movement irregular.
Feeble whines and whimpers break free from their grasp, their control crumbling before you.
“I-Its okay, n-no one could l-love me anyways… I-I’m just a monster…”
“M-Monsters deserve to go to h-hell, right?”

They reach for a shelf above your view, and in their quaking hands lays a knife.
The blade is shiny, its point sharp, and its curve beckoning…
“N-Nobody would m-miss me anyways…”
Their arms tremble as the knife points at their heart…

With a swift plunge, their blood begins to leak out, staining their shirt.
Their arms slip from the handle as they fall to their knees…
With their last bit of strength, they drop a key next to you.
The blood begins to pool under their fresh corpse…

NO FUTURE ENDING 1

-ACCEPTANCE-

“Y-You do?!”
“Y-You’d actually want me?!”
“E-Even if I’m a bit dark?!”

“T-Thank you!”
Tears rush down their face; they are content…
“L-Let me get you out of here!”
“Y-You don’t deserve to be down here…”
“I-I put you down here b-because I wasn’t sure how you’d act..”

“Looking back on it now, t-this was a terrible decision!”
“Y-You're not a prisoner, y-your my lover!”
“I shouldn’t treat you like this!”
They hurriedly pull you to your feet, clenching onto your hand.
Their palm is sweaty from fear, yet they grab your hand with renewed life…

“Let's go upstairs! I-I’ll make breakfast, a-and you… Y-You enjoy yourself!”
“Y-You can watch TV, play some video games, o-or read! I-I like to read, I have a big collection!
A-Admittedly, they are all love and horror stories, a-although they are good reads!”

“I-I don’t want to treat you like a prisoner,
b-but I-I can't be for sure t-that you actually want this – o-or are playing me…
I-I know I kidnapped you… A-And that I’m sorry for.
I-I’ll try my best to make it up to you! – as long as you give me a chance…”

They guide you through the basement, up the stairs, and into the living room.
“P-Please relax, take a seat, and c-chill out – i-if anything piques your interest, g-go for it!
What's mine is yours!”
“I-I’ll just be in the kitchen, a-and – oh! L-Let me get you some water!”

“H-Here you go! T-The the bathroom is just over there if you need it.”
With a shaky yet excited kiss on the forehead, they leave you on the couch.

You turn off the TV and accept their help; standing up, you find yourself face-to-face.
With a blush, they lead you to the dining table.

-Archaic Bygones-

A rush of frozen air blows through the arctic wastelands,
an inhospitable tundra that was once conquered many generations ago
has now been deemed deadly once again.
Not because of its harsh elements but because of the world's biggest problem: humanity.

The winds chilling nature usually stabs into the skin of man,
yet its frigid call goes unheard as it breezes by the harsh metal of machine.
Temperature controlled by a mere thought eliminates any need for shelter;
they are free to walk the lands unhindered.

Still… Human's worst nightmares are of their own accord-
“Breakfast is done! Archaic Bygones?! Man, good choice.
That one took forever to come out! Damn… You’ll have plenty of time to read it,
so long as you keep yourself fed, so come get some breakfast!”
They grab onto a bookmark and slot it in, closing the book you grasp onto their hand.
Your eyes meet, and with a smile, they lead you to the dining table.

“Alright! H-Here is your plate. Take as much as you want! I-I don’t want you to go hungry.
I also have a variety of drinks, so feel free to grab whatever you want!
The uh, t-the table is right over there!”
They point over to the dark and glossy table. A red cloth drapes over its smooth surface and a light wooden bowl housing an assortment of fruits is placed in the center.

You fill your plate, grab a drink of your choice, and sit across from them.
“I hope you like it – i-it’s nothing special… B-But it's the thought that counts, right?”
As you eat, the flavor intrigues your taste buds, poking them with a new taste,
something familiar made anew…

Silence accompanies the table, only breaking up by a soft clang of a fork
or the setting down of a cup…
“S-So… D-Do you like it? I-It’s my own recipe…”

What Would You Like To Say?
“I like it” Continue To “Delighted”
“I do not” Go To “Enlightened”

-Delighted-

“Y-You do?! W-Well, I’m glad you like it! T-There's more of it if you're still hungry!”
Their face brightens as their smiles gleam; they happily continue to eat…
As you finish your plate, they take their last drink.
Gazing over, they excitedly grab their dishes and head for yours…
“You full? – perfect! I-I’ll take care of this, you relax.”

You sit down back on the couch, letting the food digest…
“Now that is out of the way, l-let’s hang out! I-I know the new ‘Soul Excavator’ is out,
o-or! I-If you’d like – w-we can visit my hobby room – i-it has all my favorite stuff!
I-I’ve got steampunk warriors, f-from wizards to samurai! Si-Op: Black card sets,
from Black Rock to DeadNight Diamond! I even have some of the originals!”

“O-Okay, I’m rambling! W-What would you like to do?
A-And it's okay if you don't want to check out my hobby room; we have plenty of time!”

“Alright! I didn’t mean to overwhelm you; I’m a bit of a fanatic! But uh, you settle down –
a-actually! L-Let me pull out the couch. We can stretch out and snuggle up!”
They pull out the mattress hidden beneath the cushions,
setting down some pillows and laying out a blanket.

“Here you go, get comfy; I’ll get us some popcorn. Just give me a minute!”
They come back with a fresh bowl of popcorn, sliding next to you
and placing the bowl in the middle. They pick up the remote, select the streaming app,
and play “Soul Excavator: Triad Tribulations.”

It is a movie about a secret society extracting souls to unleash a fallen god.
This one ends the trilogy, watching the Triad crumble as their plan backfires.
One of the leaders goes rogue and tries to take the power for himself.
Another one of the figureheads has a change of heart, opposing the rouge power-hungry madmen.

Everything comes to a close as the forces clash,
permanently altering the world and leaving society in shambles.
Not only have many people been killed and many innocent lives wiped out,
but now they're sure of the greater forces at hand.
Leaving the ending on a hopeful yet sinister note…

“So? What did you think?! I loved it personally, but I’d love to hear your opinion!”
“Alright, Alright, I’m hearing you out… T-Thanks for being honest with me.
I-I know it's just a movie, b-but I want you to feel comfortable with me…”
Time flies by as you two snuggle up and watch some more TV…
Eating some sandwiches for lunch and watching on…

-Hobby Room-

“You'd actually want to check out my hobby room?!”
“YES! Okay, okay, follow me! It will be worth your time, I promise!”
They giddily grab your hand and bring you to a door next to the bathroom.
A poster of “Suicidal Knife Weilding Tweakers” most popular album
“Bayonets, Bitches, And Broken Hearts” covers the bland wood door.

“Ok, it's a bit messy; I’m trying to organize, but! I have so much to show you!”
“We can start with my Si-Op: Black card sets – here, take this binder!
It has a bunch of my cards, although it's only a portion of my set!”
You two continue to look over their collection; they are so ecstatic to show you every inch of the jam-packed room that time passes without a care in the world…

“And that's all! – dang, it's getting dark; I gotta get to cooking!”
“You can chill out on the hide-a-bed while I make dinner!”
They quickly pull out the hide-a-bed, throwing on some pillows and a blanket.
Turning back to you, they kiss you on the forehead and head for the kitchen.

Go To “Dinner”

-Dinner-

“...Do you mind if I make something simple?”

“Cool, tacos sound good?”

“Great! I can whip them up real fast…”

While they make dinner, you lie about, loafing on the hide-a-bed, and leisurely spend your time.
Sounds of the fridge, pans, stirring, and cooking accompany the background noise.
The smell of hamburger meat being fried and seasoned wafts from the kitchen…

“Dinner's done! Come make your plate!”
Entering the kitchen, you see many bowls, olives, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, and more await to be grabbed and combined to your heart's content.
“Grab whatever you want, and as much you want. I want to make sure you're full!”

Making your plate, you sit at the table, squeezing some limes, folding a tortilla, and then bitting down; dinner has begun…
“I-I hope I didn’t mess this up – e-everybody likes tacos…”
They look over to your plate, seeing its already devoured state.
They softly smile to themselves as their worried expression evaporates into a sigh of relief…

You finish your plate before they can start on their third taco; peering over at you,
they blush slightly and go back to eating.
You grip the plate's edge and take it to the kitchen, rinsing it off and setting it in the sink.

“If you’d like, you can head to the bedroom. I-I’ll be done soon.”
You swivel around and look down the hallway.
“I-I's the one at the very end.”
Sauntering down the hall, you grasp the doorknob and push it open.
As the door swings open, you find a cozy yet disorganized room.

You lay down on the oddly neat bed and await their arrival…

The door gradually opens; peering into the room, you are passed out.
They silently slink up to you, kissing your forehead and joining you in the bed.

Happy Ever After ENDING 3

-Enlightened-

“O-Oh – t-that's okay… I-I can be better next time…”
Their head hangs low as they weakly pick up their fork, somberly carrying on and eating…
The uneasiness in the air only builds as they finish their food; grabbing onto their plate, they quietly meander to you and grab yours…

“I-I was thinking… I-If you wanted to… T-Theres the new ‘S-Soul Excavator’ movie out…
Y-You know? W-We can hang out…”

“I-I mean, t-there's also… W-Well… I-I don't think you’ll care…
B-But, uh – I-I have a hobby room… I-It’s full of stuff… L-Like uh –
S-Si-Op: Black card sets, uh — t-the – Steampunk warriors? K-Know ‘em?”
“Yeah – didn’t think so… W-Well, I don't care, w-whatever you want…”

What Would You Like To Do?
Watch Soul Excavator? Continue To “Starring At The Screen”
Visit The Hobby Room? Go To “Renewed Life”

-Starring At The Screen-

“Okay… I guess I’ll set up the hide-a-bed; you can turn the movie on…”
They bleakly pull out the mattress hidden beneath the cushions,
throwing down some pillows and half-heartedly laying out a blanket.

While you select “Soul Excavator: Triad Tribulations,”
they despondently fall onto the mattress, staring at the screen carelessly…

Triad Tribulations is a movie about a secret society extracting souls to unleash a fallen god.

Not only have many people been killed many innocent lives wiped out,
but now they're sure of the greater forces at hand.
Leaving the ending on a hopeful yet sinister note…

You look over at them, their eyes still coldly watching the screen,
unflinching to any stimulus, indifferent to what they saw, not moving a muscle…
“...O-Oh, it's… Yeah… Y-You can just… W-Whatever you’d like, go ahead… Not like you cared anyways…”

You find a show to watch while their relentless dead eyes glue to the screen,
not taking in any information, just lost in another dimension…
The dinner topic widens their pupils as their grip on reality returns to them:
“I-Its getting late… I-I should go make dinner…”
They loosely drag their body off the hide-a-bed and enter the kitchen.

Go To “Last Supper”

-Last Supper-

“...I… I’m just going to make something simple…”

“...Tacos are a no-brainer…”

While they make dinner, you lie about leisurely spending your time watching TV.
Sounds of the fridge, pans, stirring, and cooking accompany the background noise.
The smell of hamburger meat being fried and seasoned wafts from the kitchen…

“D-Dinners done… They're not going to like this either…”
Entering the kitchen, you see many bowls, olives, tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, and more waiting to be grabbed up and combined to your heart's content.
Yet, a heavy sigh exhales from their mouth,
“D-Do as you please… G-Grab what you want… I-I don’t care…”

Making your plate, you take a seat at the table and squeeze half a lime over the taco.
You fold the tortilla and bite down; dinner has begun…
They look over at your plate with the same expressionless gaze,
Why do I even care?”

You finish your plate before they can start on their third taco;
their movement is slow, and their visage is like a fresh funeral.
You grip the plate's edge and take it to the kitchen, rinsing it off and setting it in the sink…

“I-I’m going to bed… Y-You can sleep on the hide-a-bed.”
They drearly take their plate and set it in the fridge,
heading down the hallway and disappearing into their room.
You decide to stay up, picking something from your previous options
to keep you company for a few quiet hours…

Yet, a curious thought climbs out of your mind: should you check on them?

Would you like to follow this curiosity?
Check On Them Continue To “Curiosity Watched The Cat”
Do Not? Go To “Curiosity Killed The Cat”

-Curiosity Killed The Cat-

The morning rays shine past the slight gap in the curtains,
poking your face and gently waking you up…

Your eyes gradually adjust to the warm light, dilating your pupils
and nudging you off the hide-a-bed…
The TV continues its charade from last night, drawing your eye as you question the time…
It's 11:36 AM. You’d think they’d be awake by now…

Curiosity flutters in your mind… “Where could they be?”
You stand up, stretching your arms high and shaking off the morning grogginess.
Gazing around, you see no one in sight; curiosity continues to prod at you…

Walking down the hallway, you stop by the bathroom; its door is wide open…
The hobby room creaks open, and while it's filled to the brim, it's lifeless…
The next obvious answer beckons your mind; sauntering up to their door, you gently knock…
Nothing is heard… Even with a louder knock — nothing is heard… Curiosity still plagues your mind…
You clench the doorknob, twisting it and pushing the door open…
There they hang, chair fallen over, body limp, and with one lone note
and a key left on the ground…

If You Ever Let Go... ENDING 5

2024.02.12 08:34 imc-onfused Heard chomping, now my bun smells like hamburger helper lol

I heard chomping and I peaked my head around the TV to see my bunny Benjamin and he's clearly chomping but nothing is around him, so I pick him up and still can't find anything ont he floor or in his immediate area but when I picked him up and kissed his nose, his squishy snout smells like... a mix of stewed tomatoes, almost like a chili but more like a hamburger elbow pasta with stewed tomatoes. Very reminiscent of coming home to hamburger helper as a kid haha. No idea what he found but he seems to be totally fine, I'm continually impressed by what doesnt cause him digestion issues lol. Always try to keep things out of reach but he has a history of determination haha. I love my very curious bunny.💗

2024.02.05 22:57 kiramekki first acupuncture visit left me with more questions than answers

Hi all,
I had my first acupuncture session due to insomnia last week. I have never had an issue sleeping and my brother said he had had success with acupuncture. I am very open to holistic treatments and studied Traditional Chinese Medicine in college for fun. She was very thorough with me, and diagnosed me with Dampness in the body. It made sense until...I gave her the green light to talk about veganism. Oh boy...I never really paid attention to the stereotypes but man she was one of them. She told me information that went totally against all my research. Having struggled with PCOS, insulin resistance, and hypothyroidism, I study nutrition and keep up to date because it heavily impacts me. Here's the kicker- after my appt, I looked up how TCM treats "dampness" and "spleen Qi deficiency" and "kidney Qi deficiency" as that's what she said I had. I agree, all the symptoms line up. But the thing is, for these issues they are treated with hot warm meals, not cold raw vegan foods she was recommending to me. I was too in shock to say anything, she was sweet but man! I had to hold back, especially when she said eggs were too high in cholesterol and to avoid them, also to not eat grains with animal protein...which is basic meal balance "musts" for insulin resistance. This is what she sent me after in an email: --------------------------------------------- Here are the notes on food combining. I think following proper food combining could really help you. Mixing foods with a higher sugar content with protein can cause a dilemma for the stomach. The sugars (aka: carbs) need less acid and less time to break down before they leave the stomach, while meat, eggs, even nuts and seeds (aka: proteins) need more acid and more time to break down before leaving the stomach. When the two are in the stomach together, the body has to decide, “does it stay or does it go?”. If it stays, the sugars sit too long and begin to “ferment” and bubble up which often causes Rebellious Stomach Qi. You get the picture, gas and acid go up and you get heart burn, acid reflux, belching, burping and sometimes, even vomiting. Over time, this can lead to ulcers in the esophagus, Barrett’s Syndrome, COPD and more. If the body says, “send it on down”, you end up with protein (meat for example) that is not broken down. If the food is broken down, the nutritional benefit is lost as it cannot be absorbed. The undigested particles often become lodged in the intestines and begin to putrefy. This can cause lower abdominal problems such as gas, bloating, flatulence, borborygmus (gurgling), odorous bowel movements, diarrhea, constipation, etc. Over time, bad bacteria can feed off the particles and the large intestine can develop diverticulitis. If the colon is not naturally cleansing, removing waste, the diverticulitis can proceed to diverticulosis. If a hole occurs in the intestine, waste can leach into the blood stream leading to sepsis and death. So, you can see that gut health is very important and signs like gas, bloating, belching and burping are early warning signs that something needs to change. Here are the “cliff notes” how to avoid these problems. For proper food combining, follow these guidelines to helps to reduce acid reflux and improves digestion and elimination: : 1.) Do not drink fluids with your meal, or for 2 hours immediately following your meal. This allows your food to digest properly and transit the stomach. Animal protein such as beef, pork, and chicken can take 4 hours to transit the stomach. If you become overly thirsty after the meal, small sips of water are okay. 2.) Focus on drinking for the hours leading up to your meal. Drink a large glass of water approximately 10 minutes or more before eating. This prepares the body for digestion and helps prevent the feeling of thirst while eating. 3.) Do not combine starches and animal protein in the same meal. Ex: Chicken and Rice, Meat and Potatoes, Pasta with Meat Sauce, Hamburgers, Meat Sandwiches (No bread with animal protein.) Eggs and Toast. Starchy carbs digest more quickly than animal protein causing a type of rotting/fermentation in the stomach that leads to acid indigestion, bloating and reflux. Small amounts of animal protein with large amounts of starch (the paste with meat sauce or pizza, for example), may cause the food to transit too quickly and lead to undigested protein in the intestines which can lead to infection and leaky gut. 4.) Always eat fruit alone on an empty stomach. To play it safe, eat only one kind of fruit unless you are blending it in a smoothy. Transit time is the time it takes food to leave the stomach. Here is a general guideline: Water 0-10 mins Juice/Wine/Alcohol* 30 mins Fruit 60 mins Vegetables 90-120 mins Nuts, Seeds and grains 120 mins Meat, Chicken, Fish, Pork, 4 hours Shellfish 4 - 8 hours ---------------------------------------------------------------------- the funny thing is, my digestion is near perfect and I never experience burping, bloating, anything of the sort. I eat a pretty animal-heavy diet, I eat eggs, fish of all types, grass fed red meat, greek yogurt, plus plenty of veggies..I don't know I feel like the email has a lot of misinformation. Please let me know if there's any truth to this, I don't believe the rotting/fermenting food in the stomach thing has any truth to it?

2024.02.04 10:58 igorekk The best of Handpicked Berlin in January (also tech/career related)

Hi there,
I skipped December, but here is January. Here's a selection of my weekly digest of news and links. You can subscribe to a weekly e-mail here.

Week of 8th (issue #83)

  1. 🪦 Berlinfoodstories made a list of restaurants that permanently closed in 2023. This year VAT is back to 19% and everyone talks about recession, so the outlook for the restauranteurs isn’t the best. I cook a lot, but when I eat out, I don’t mind paying for the good stuff and complaining to people joining me if the food is mediocre instead of telling it to the staff (“Alles ok, danke!”). I know, stupid.
  2. 🫣 Recession? What recession? People were happy to spend €58M (+47%) more on fireworks this year (a total of €180M) compared to 2019 (last year before the temporary ban). That’s the same as last year, but I’m not sure the interpretation that people were angrier last year is valid (Tweet). €180M. Think about it for a moment.
  3. 🚄 Have you already onboarded the (gen) AI train? If not, stay put because the hype is gone. Here is a great six-month-old essay from Ted Goia, where he claims that the “only areas where AI is flourishing are shamming, spamming & scamming.” In December, NYT filed a lawsuit against OpenAI on copyright infringement, which summoned threadbois to demonstrate their expertise for and against it. Zvi summed the copyrights topic up perfectly. For more on “‘AI, and everything else”, the annual presentation from Ben Evans. It's worth reading.
  4. 📆 One of the favourite pastimes of some of my former colleagues was planning their holiday at the start of the year based on the optimal use of the so-called “Brückentage”. If you feel like doing the same, here is your chance because RBB made a helpful overview. I wish I had any visibility into my year.
  5. 🙅🏻‍♂️ Zapier has a good content blog, and they did an overview of the best to-do apps, a fitting topic for all the New Year resolutions. I went full circle, tried everything and ended up writing things down on paper.
  6. 💬 Briefly:

Week of 15th (issue #84)

  1. 🇲🇽 I admit that for a long time, I did not know if the shot was called Mexikaner or Mexicana (German pronunciation of Mexicaner, lol), but I have loved it since I first tried it a decade ago. It’s like a little soup, a tiny spicy meal shot. Exberliner has a nice article on where to try the best ones. Prost!
  2. 🚄 Here is a nice Reddit comment tip to remember if you ever feel adventurous to take non-direct trains with Deutsche Bahn. “You're entitled to either a taxi ride from Berlin to your destination station or a hotel in Berlin, paid by Deutsche Bahn.” (in case you miss your last train home)
  3. 😶 Big and small tech is struggling, laying off people, especially in the US. Google, Instagram, Amazon Prime Video, Unity... Here is a viral TikTok of one of the layoffs by Cloudflare, which was handled extremely poorly, using an excuse of performance when it was about hiring too aggressively (a common theme!). For a good debate about the TikTok video, here is Hacker News.
  4. 🇩🇪 If you work or intend to work in Germany, do invest in learning German. It’s fun (don’t murder me!), rich language (it’s possible to combine words: weg+bier, for example!) and speaking it will improve your day-to-day life quality by a factor of 10. You should follow germanonliners on Instagram. I love his authentic style, and the content is TOP. Here is his advice on how to learn German in 6 months.
  5. 📸 The best science images of 2023 by Nature. Immersive. I loved Space Monet, while Swirling Cyclones reminded me of Van Gogh.
  6. 💬 Briefly:

Week of 22nd (issue #85)

  1. 🇦🇹 I’ve done a review of Felix Austria’s Schnitzel on Instagram. Both gut gelungen.
  2. 🍴 A lovely list from the official tourist blog of Berlin of 11 places with lunches for under 11€.
  3. 🏟️ After reporting two profitable quarters in a row, Uber is on a naming spending spree in Berlin. As you probably heard, they’ll pay to rename Mercedes Benz Arena and Verti Music Hall to Uber Arena and Uber Eats Music Hall. Everyone talks about it, so it already seems like a good marketing stunt. Related, Bitpanda became an official crypto partner of FC Bayern. In general, buying naming rights isn’t a particularly bullish signal.
  4. 🇩🇪 Why Germany Is Rich But Germans Are Poor and Angry by Bloomberg is a great read. **“**The shared prosperity bit is partly a myth: Inequality is high by European standards and median net wealth of around €106,000 is well below the euro-area median of around €150,000.” The German economy was also the worst-performing major economy last year. So let’s take it positively: it can only improve!
  5. 🫣 Google is somehow struggling, and besides a lot of schadenfreude and calls for Pichai’s head, many grounded comments fly around. I liked this one (tweet) that paying employees 6-7 figure incomes to work on whatever they like can only be an anomaly. Similar from an insider (LinkedIn). Something needs to give.
  6. 👌 I encourage you to read this essay with 6 points about career and life by Cate Hall, which did rounds last week. Great ideas, especially on embracing rejection.
  7. berlin choices of the week is this maybe still relevant tip on how to walk on ice(bent knees, acting like a penguin). I would add to keep your hands outside of your pockets. From Germany I have this funny thread on German habits that make no sense. Winning an argument with doch is my winner.
  8. 💬 Briefly:

Week of 29th (issue #86)

  1. I published my first Perspective: 🧭 How to find a great company to work for? It's subjective, but I think I’ll also like it in 6 months—it often happens that writing doesn’t age well for the author.
  2. 💶 Numbeo published its cost of living index 2024. Berlin is at #48 in Europe, and Hamburg is the top German city at #20. If we sort by restaurants, we are #81 and #51 by groceries. On our favourite topic, rents, Berlin is #23.
  3. 🎥 Berlinale is just around the corner. I attended last year for the first time, and the Programme can be overwhelming. My tip is to pick two or three movies from the competition—I assume they are well-curated. Don’t be afraid of large venues; it works. I was also buying tickets from Kleinanzeigen. If you have other tips, please do share in the comments. For an overview of the 20 competition movies, head to Tip Berlin. (🇩🇪) Tempting.
  4. 🤖 High-salaried tech bubble of 2008-2022 probably finally burst (Tweet). So if five years ago everyone wanted to work in tech to earn big, what comes next? Health, climate? Anti-tech? Oil companies? Hmm.
  5. 🏠 Apartment search hack/tip: Publish an advert in the newspapers and promote yourself on Kleinanzeigen—the main thesis being that some people don’t want to be flooded by thousands of requests. I found an apartment this way in Stuttgart and got reminded of it by this great tip from AdMysterious2746 on Reddit.
  6. ✏️ The day you became a better writer is a short text, and… where do I sign? Each word should tell. The more you write, the better you’ll get at it. There are only upsides, in business and privately. Write more!
  7. 💬 Briefly:
---
Thanks for reading to the end, and I hope you liked it!

2024.02.02 17:45 kabhes From Drugs To Meat: Chapter 5

[First] [Previous] [Next]
Transcription Subject: Maarten de Groot, Human Refugee/Meat dealer
Date [standardized human time]: January 30, 2137
After waiting for a whole 5 days, the first batch was finally done. Gilt texted me and told me to come over to prepare and taste test it.
Never expected that a venlil of all species would demand me to eat meat in front of them. I never expected any of this. I mean if someone told me I would be living on a different planet, surrounded by xenos who feared me for my eyes and teeth, and that I would be a meat dealeillegal producer, I would have called them insane or high.
Most of Dayside City lived up to be the utopia that governor Tarva made it out to be. Pristine streets made out of rubber mats and winding roads, clean of any rubbish or unsavoury types. The neighbourhood Gilt lived in, on the other hand did not live up to that promise. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not full of cars with their wheels stolen and burning trashcans. But, if I were a venlil and not a ‘scary’ human, I wouldn’t feel safe walking here. I couldn’t help but notice that a lot less people crossed the road here when they saw me coming. What I did like about this place was just how many different xenos there were to see, nevok, krakotl, harchen, yotul, and even some I did not recognize. Also some tilfish, but I prefer not seeing those; I could die happily never having to meet a spider that is chest high, sapient or not.
Coming up to Gilt’s house, I noticed that it still looked like shit, just as it did a couple of days ago, no surprise there. I knocked on the boarded-up window leading to his living room, and after a minute, he opened up. “Good, you’re here. How are you?” he asked, stopping me dead in my tracks. “Just kidding, I don’t care. Come in.”
“I had to knock because your door bell is broken.”
“I know, and I am not going to fix it. I did clean that old vegetable grinder I still had, or ‘meat mincer’ as you called it, like you ask- because you told me you needed it.”
“And the meat is done too?” I asked while looking around at the now mostly clean house. The dust and cans were gone, but the windows were grimy and the floor still had its stains. I suppose that can’t get into the vats and thus didn’t bother Gilt. Should I have helped him clean his house? It’s not like he wants any help —no he doesn't want to ask for it— but its not my house anyway, so why should I care. Then why do I?
“Of course it is, why else would I invite you over?”
“Because you’re lonely and want to hang out?”
He just gave me a side-eyed glare and showed me to the kitchen. There were pieces of meat placed on the kitchen counter, still in their original can shape. I washed my hands with an ancient piece of soap, grabbed a large sharp knife, and began cutting it into small enough pieces for them to fit into the meat mincer. Not really to my surprise Gilt grabbed a knife and reached out for a piece. “Oh no you’re fucking not, don’t you dare touch the product with those dirty bloody hands.”
“There’s no blood on my paws,” he exclaimed, pulling out a pair of disposable rubber gloves from a box that he kept in his makeshift laboratory build onto the dining table.
Is he really fine with cutting meat? I know he made this stuff, but he’s still a venlil. “You don’t have to help me if you don’t feel comfortable doing this,” I said nonchalantly, idly cutting away at the meat.
“Yes, I do. I want to see this through. If you haven’t noticed yet, I am not like the other venlil.” He seems more tense then normal, I wonder what’s up. Could it be that he’s actually getting uncomfortable from all of this?
Eventually, I started to press some of the chunks into the electric mincer, I suppose doing it by hand requires to much strength and energy for them. While I was mixing the beef and pork together, Gilt asked, “So why are we grinding this up anyway? Is this for old people, or do humans not like using their teeth?”
“No, we’re going to make them into disks, they will eventually become solid again once they’re done cooking. We mince it because it changes the texture and taste.”
I weighed the chunks and kneaded them awkwardly into the right shape, never having done this before and only knowing how to do it from videos I had watched online yesterday. Gilt looked at how I did the first one and began copying. The silence between us became a bit awkward due to Gilt’s odd mood. “So do you have any hobbies?”
“No.” he replied mater-of-fact.
“What, nothing. you don’t do anything in your free time?”
“Well my television was stolen, so I picked up an old hobby from the PD facility.” I remember that he told me that his television was stolen while he was in there.
“What kind of hobby did you have in the facility?”
“Staring a blank wall.” We both laughed at the dumb joke. “To be honest, I have started to read up on scientific stuff you humans have come up with, cybernetic prosthetics, cell growth,” he said as he slapped a patty he was making.
“Psychology, too?” He could certainly use it.
“What? No! I have had enough of that for a lifetime.”
“What they did to you wasn’t psychology, that was torture.” He fell silent and gave an ear flick that if I recall correctly meant ‘thank you.’
We silently finished shaping the last of the patties, and I began looking for a pan to cook one in to taste test it. “Are they now ready to eat?” Gilt asked with a bit of impatience.
“No, they’re ready to be sold though, the customer will want to cook it themselves. I, however, will cook one, to test the quality,” I said opening 2 cabinets simultaneously while trying to find a pan. “Do you have a pan? I brought my own cooking oil.”
“…Yes, here.” He pulled out a pan and handed it to me. I noticed in his eyes that he was having some sort of internal struggle, until suddenly his ears sprung up and he focused on me. “Make one for me too,” he said in a demanding tone.
“What, why?” Why does he want to eat this? He did say he wanted ‘to see this through.’
“Well, why not? I am like you anyway!” Like me, what is he talking about?
“What, a criminal, meat producer, amazing, handsome?” I said the last part as a joke, he seems a bit upset and I didn’t really know how else to calm him down.
“No, a-a, you know, a meat-eater.”
“You mean to say a predator?” As soon as I said predator, his body went stiff, his hands grabbed onto something that wasn’t there. His head and eyes flinched as if saying that word caused him pain. What did they do to him? No wonder he has been avoiding that word.
The moment lasted hardly a second before he regained control again. “…Yes, that. Now prepare it for me!” He was visibly angered by my response.
“Gilt, you’re not a…meat-eater, you’re a herbivore. You can digest meat just fine, so if you really want it, I won’t deny it from you. It’s not like you’re one of those ‘cured’ species. Why do you think you’re a meat-eater anyway?” I began preparing the pan with olive oil and laid the first patty into it.
“Look at me, of course am I one. The doctors at the PD facility all knew it, it’s what they called me for years. You know it’s true.”
“When I look at you, all I think is that you need a bath and a good grooming session...In all seriousness, you’re fierce and have less fear then any venlil I have ever met or heard of, but that doesn’t defy your diet. One of the most evil humans in history was a vegetarian, meaning non-meat-eating. Besides, why would you listen to those insane people you call doctors?” Why am trying to calm this man down? He wouldn’t do the same to me. I can just make this stuff for him and get this conversation over with.
He turned around far enough that I wasn’t in view anymore for even his wide vision. His ears had fallen to the side of his head and his tail dragged over the floor. He sighed, “when I came out of the facility, no one wanted to even get close to me. They crossed the street or quickly turned a corner when they saw me approaching, avoiding me like I carried the disease, as I very much do.“ He paused for a moment before continuing. “Much like how they treat you and others of your kind. Humans are the only ones who even dare to come close to me.” I had noticed when we were shopping how actively venlil avoided him and how it stung him. I didn’t know exactly what to say to him back then, and I still didn’t really know, but I had to say something to the poor lad.
I placed my hand on his shoulder. He flinched, but didn’t make an attempt to shake it off. “I know how it feels to be rejected by the venlil. Not to any extent how you must feel though.” Not knowing how to talk to someone in a situation like this I decided to just quote an old movie, “’you are who you choose to be,’ no one decides what or who you are but you. If you really still want to eat this, then give the word and I’ll throw it into the pan, but no one is making you do this. It’s your own choice.”
After a moment of silence, Gilt turned around and finally broke it. “My own kind reject me, yours let me out of that house of torture. I’ve made my choice.”
"Not quite the most stable answer you could have given..." I said, throwing a second patty into the pan.
“Don’t start thinking I look up to humans now, I know what kind of urges you have towards venlil.” What, how does he know? Did he somehow nick my holopad and look into its search history when I wasn’t looking? Damn this limited vision!
“W-what, what are you talking about?”
“Don’t play dumb, I know all you humans want to pet venlil.” Oh thank god he’s talking about those urges.
“Not you though, you’re way too dirty and greasy.”
“Good.”
I started to cut the strayu that I had brought from home. Strayu is some venlil version of bread. It was supposedly very expensive and difficult to make. Apparently venlil don’t have enough muscle and endurance to knead dough alone, making it hard to make. And for some reason they couldn’t be fucked to figure out how to make a kneading machine. So when humans showed up with those, the product went from expensive and rarely eaten to a cheap, common household food. Although the machine version, apparently the taste is far inferior to the handmade one, but I am just happy that they have bread.
After waiting for the patties to be ready, I placed them on the bread, but was interrupted by Gilt. “Don’t water it down for me,” he said in a stern voice.
“I’m not. This is how it’s normally eaten, well how I normally eat it. If you were to order this in a restaurant, you would normally also have some vegetables, leaves and even a piece of fruit on it, alongside some condiments.” He seemed to accept this and grabbed the hamburger. I expected him to instantly bite into it, yet he just stood there staring at it, holding it right in front of his face like he was about to take a bite out of it. “Let’s sit down on the couch.” Gilt simply responded with an agreeing ear flick.
We sat on the couch next to each other. Gilt was still holding it in front of his mouth. “I get that you’re taking it step by step, but I think you’ve got the holding part under control. Are you ready to actually take a bite out of it?” I have heard from other dealers that they’ve sold to some deviant venlil before, but it’s not something I was familiar with, stand alone actually seeing one eat it.
“Yeah, yeah…” Gilt mumbled, hyper-fixated at the slab of meat in between his hands.
It’s going to be cold by the time he actually takes a bite out of it. “Let’s count to 3 and then we both eat, alright?” Not getting a response from Gilt, I decided to just count. “1…2…3.”
I have had hamburgers countless of times, even a couple here on Venlil Prime, but only a few due to the high price of it. But they never tasted this good. I am not sure if its because it was handmade or because I haven’t had any for a while. Nonetheless it was amazing. The juices spilling into my mouth, the sweetness combined with the natural hardiness of meat, pure bliss.
You would almost think that Gilt was in one of his trauma-trances, from the part that he had almost completely stopped moving and stared blankly wall-eyed. However, his ears were perked up in joy and his tail was overclocking with his wagging. Whatever he was experiencing seemed an order of magnitude higher than I was.
After he finally finished, I asked, “and do you like it?”
“Do I like it? How can I have lived my entire life without it? We can sell this to venlil!” Gilt was still wagging rapidly, I was still not sure if what I’d just allowed to happen is good or bad.
I laughed, “good luck finding anyone who wants to actually do so. I tell you what, we are going to sell some to my dealers right now. I’ve got a plan to take this business to a new level.”
A/N:
I really appreciate comments, it gives a lot more satisfaction than a few up arrows.

2024.02.01 01:50 HatImpossible8089 Major improvement!!

Sharing some progress here and how I did it in case it’s helpful for anyone. 7-year chronic gastritis sufferer nearly healed!! 👏😃
I want to start by saying this is just my story, not medical advice, etc. but maybe it helps you.
Previously I was on the following meds: 40mg of esomeprazol in morning and night (80mg a day) Taking chewable/liquid anti-acids 5-6 times a day Taking probiotic every morning Taking anti-spasmodic (buscapina) 4 times a day Taking serious pain reliever when necessary (nolotil)
I was trapped in this routine and couldn’t get well. I could not tolerate vegetable fiber, and was removing tons of foods from my diet. Any raw fruits/veggies like carrots, kale, cabbage, apples, etc would kill my for a week after eating. Even soft lettuce salads were off limits and would throw me into pain and gastroparesis.
I realized from reading that my micro biome was askew and my stomach chemistry was all off. The meds weren’t helping despite taking all of them — and frequently.
I decided to finally and completely cut out alcohol and see if it would help me turn a corner.(Previous 2-3 month pauses never helped)
When I noticed an improvement, I slowly began a transition which included the following alterations in my diet:
I stopped eating greasy, fried, and processed foods as much as possible (nothing strict, but tried to avoid fried chicken sandwiches/hamburgers, etc.) — greasy and processed foods apparently make your gut produce more acid
I stopped buying meat to cook at home and began eating vegetarian at home, but would meat out at restaurants when I wanted. (Nothing strict or restrictive) — apparently meat is harder to digest despite my painful experience with veggies.
I began taking Metamucil (psillium husk) every day with every meal. This is a soluble fiber which has numerous benefits. (A friend recommended)
With the vegetarian diet, I started with only foods my body could tolerate. Well-cooked veggies, pastas, lentils/beans etc. I tried to eat as many raw veggies as possible from the list of ones I knew (from experience) my stomach could tolerate. Slowly, with the soluble fiber intake and the veggies, my stomach started to adapt and I began to tolerate more fiber. I started to test and reintroduce foods (slowly) that i thought my body could tolerate. Foods I had previously cut out.
Not drinking alcohol gave my stomach a major break as I was not introducing extra acid into the equation. This, combined with quitting processed greasy foods and meat, meant I was needing less anti-acids each day. (Meat stays in your stomach longer which makes it work harder apparently.)
Slowly I was able to cut out all the daily anti-acids and the anti-spasmodic drugs. Thanks to these lifestyle changes.
I then set a goal to lower my esomeprazol dosage and eventually try to wean off as prolonged use was causing folic acid deficiency in my blood work, mouth sores, etc.
This was probably the hardest thing. My body was so dependent on it.
I started taking only 40mg in PM (instead of AM & PM) Then switched to 20mg in AM. Then 20mg every other AM. Then finally nothing.
Through each step, I went for days with terrible acid, and tried to let my stomach do its thing without influencing the chemicals with anti-acids. Basically to let my stomach try to get used to managing the acid levels on its own as best it could. If it got to be unbearable I would take anti-acids, but I tried to ley my stomach adjust.
After around 2 weeks in each phase of reducing dosage, my stomach finally evened out and was adjusted. Then I repeated the process until i was able to quit.
I just had an endoscopy and after nearly a year of making these lifestyle changes little by little, my endoscopy showed my gastritis is almost healed. I could tell this was the case without the endoscopy because I feel soooooo much better and haven’t had a flare up in months. (Don’t recommend alcohol cheat days)
After years of suffering and having flare ups affect my vacations, work schedule, meals with friends etc. I’m so happy to be able to feel so much better.
My previously restrictive diet was such a drag! I’m so happy to be able to eat almost everything again! The best part is, I didn’t really give up much. I still eat meat when I want. Have a burger occasionally, and now my stomach is healed enough to process it. — only alcohol is off limits 😭
From reading on this thread, it’s clear to see everybody’s tolerances are different, so this might not me helpful for you, but regardless I wanted to share as I felt like there was no hope for recovery for so long.
I was the one who preferred taking the pills vs doing the lifestyle changes, but in the end it’s what actually helped me.
Hope this can help you too.

Abnormal weather, poisoned water, and the uncertain overture to WWIII…
Last Week in Collapse: January 14-20, 2024
This is Last Week in Collapse, a weekly newsletter compiling some of the most important, timely, useful, soul-crushing, ironic, amazing, or otherwise must-see/can’t-look-away moments in Collapse.
This is the 108th newsletter. You can find the January 7-13 edition here if you missed it last week. You can also receive these posts (with images) every Sunday by email with Substack.

A study in Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Research examined how climate change in the South China Sea impacts worldwide weather patterns; they concluded that it could cause droughts from China to India to Africa during the Northern Hemisphere’s spring & summer, and trigger Rossby waves over the Arctic and Antarctic, impacting sea ice melt.
Climatologists concluded that, in 2023, the oceans absorbed between 9-15 zettajoules more of energy than they did in 2022. One zettajoule is 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 joules of energy—roughly 10x the amount of electricity generated worldwide in one year.
Six years ago, Kenya tried forcibly moving 11 rhinos to a new habitat—all died after moving in, most of them from salt poisoning. Now they have tried again, relocating 21 rhinos hundreds of miles away to a new home. Meanwhile, scientists have found a “hidden vulnerability” in global fish stocks: declining phytoplankton will result in a large decline in fish biomass over the next decades. They say a 16% decline in phytoplankton will cause a 38% decrease in total fish biomass. Moving up the food chain…how much will human biomass drop?
Daytime heat is making mountain goats more nocturnal. Researchers are concerned that this shift may result in weaker goats and exposure to more predators. Meanwhile, in Australia, invasive fire ants are spreading outside Queensland, threatening agriculture and animals. Dams in Morocco are drying up from Drought, forecasting a catastrophic grow season ahead. In Pakistan, a months-long dry spell has cursed wheat harvests. In Australia, flooding devastated large quantities of stone fruits like plums and peaches.
Greenland is shedding 30M tonnes of ice every hour—720M tonnes per day. This figure is about 20% greater than expected. Humanity produces about 100M tonnes of CO2 per day—not that that comparison is very useful. But certainly they are related. On Monday, Canada’s warmest province/territory was Nunavut, in the Arctic Circle.
A study on wildfires concluded that the Appalachian region would, by 2100, see its annual wildfire-affected area increase dramatically, under worst-case scenarios. New York City ended its 701-day record for not recording snowfall. Mauritius activated its highest level storm warning on Monday, when Cyclone Belal blasted the island nation, along with Réunion. At least 2 were killed by the storm. Canada is bracing for a warm & dry year ahead, with impacts on agriculture and wildfires. Flooding in Durban, South Africa, left 4 suspected dead; 6 were killed in Bolivia flooding; 15 dead in Brazilian flooding; a brutal cold wave accompanied by ice storms killed 27 Americans in the Pacific Northwest. And parts of Australia are approaching 50 °C (122 °F).
The American National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released a rundown on 2023—yet another source confirming that 2023 was the warmest year on record. It has now been 47 years since earth had a colder than average year. Carbon Brief reports that it was the hottest year for 77 countries of the world—including some 2.3B humans—and “the first year the global average land temperature was more than 2C above pre-industrial levels” and “the warmest year on record for ocean heat content.”
A study of U.S. cities determined that only 10% of them will meet their renewable energy goals by 2050. The best case scenario for most of the surveyed cities results in only 35-65% of their energy needs being satisfied by renewable energy. Natural gas is projected to be the most important energy source for the U.S. in 2050.
A depressing study on bottom trawling concluded that more than half of the carbon sediment torn up by gargantuan fishing nets gets re-introduced into ocean currents—and finds its way into the atmosphere within 9 years. In Alaska, as permafrost melts and water runs into rivers, some streams are getting contaminated with iron and turning brown-orange.
Algarve (pop: 467,000) in Portugal is expecting its strongest water rationing ever amid a historic Drought. 70% of agricultural water is reportedly going to be restricted. Catalonia is declaring a state of emergency over the Drought, starting February 1st.
Kashmir had its hottest January day ever— 14.1 °C (57 °F). In Chile, old records were shattered when temps reached 41.9 °C (107 °F) in some places. Much of Arabia hit record hot nights for January.

Mining operations in Mexico are contaminating water supplies, forcing locals to buy bottled water, and intimidating them into submission—sometimes by deadly force. An illegal mining operation in Tanzania caused a landslide, killing 22 miners.
The American Red Cross declared a nationwide blood shortage. Microplastics become airborne even more easily than earlier expected, according to a recent study.
49% of Bangladesh’s water was found to contain unsafe levels of arsenic. It turns out that their monsoon flooding and forever-rising sea levels, which increase salinity of river water, also result in arsenic being released from the riverbed—with deadly consequences for the 97% of Bangladeshis reliant upon well water. Bangladesh has a population of 174,000,000 people.
At least 225 people starved to death since last July—in one town in Ethiopia, according to reports. An oil executive forecasts a very long oil shortage starting next year. India is planning to bring a nuclear power plant online once a year for at least 19 years.
Colon cancer is rising among young people, and scientists are stumped. Could it be because toilet paper is made with PFAS chemicals? Overeating and bad diets?
Mental health problems in students—and teachers—are quite serious, if that article from the UK is any guide. Oakland, California schools are allowing knowingly COVID positive students in classes if they’re asymptomatic. Apparently most other school districts are using the plausible deniability approach. California as a whole has shortened their isolation guidance for COVID positive students without fevers to just one day of quarantine.
African swine fever (ASF) is spreading in Borneo across wild pig species. Some butterfly species are adapting to climate change to have fewer spots.
Reddit is having its IPO in March, announcements say. French police protested and threatened to strike during France’s Olympic Games this summer. Azerbaijan is demanding a corridor through Armenia so it can access its exclave territory.
Stagflation in the UK is portending economic troubles ahead, according to some economists. A banking CEO says we should be worried about global debt—which totaled some $310T by the end of 2023. That’s one hell of a bubble. Some analysts think Germany is facing a two-year recession which began late last year.
——————————
As many of the rich and powerful descended on Davos yet again, some of the 1% are calling for higher taxes in an open letter to governments of the world. No doubt a greater number of billionaires is resisting such change. AI is a major topic of discussion at the Davos summit.
Political scientists say Europe is becoming divided—into five tribes ahead of the May elections for the EUropean Parliament. The full report is not too long to read. The five “crisis tribes” theorized are basically 5 key political issues: the War in Ukraine, Immigration, Global Economic Turmoil, Climate Change, and COVID-19. The study found general consensus among respondents that Europe was doing a poor job on combating climate change, handling immigration, and managing their economies—COVID and the Ukraine War were more evenly split.
German politicians are debating whether to ban an opposing political party—polling 2nd among Germany’s 6 main parties—after news of a meeting surfaced in which the potential deportation of millions was discussed. Huge crowds protested against the right-wing party across Germany.
China’s population fell by 2M+ last year, worrying some while providing small consolation to others. Comoros—pop: 868,000—voted in an election the opposition labeled fraudulent, granting their president a 4th term. A Rwandan soldier killed a Congolese soldier who allegedly shot at the Rwandans; now the DRC may be angling for War against Rwanda. An IED killed a UN peacekeeper and wounded several others in the Central African Republic. The British PM is vowing to move forward with a plan to deport asylum-seekers to Rwanda even in violation of international law.
In Gaza, a deal was finally made to bring in humanitarian aid. Israel’s PM announced what many feared: Israel intends to manage the “security” situation of all territory west of the Jordan River—in other words, all of Palestine. This essentially means a refusal to accommodate any Palestinian State in the future. Some are calling the Gaza bombardments worse than the Dresden bombings of WWII.
Iran launched missiles against locations in Iraq, Syria, and Pakistan last week. Pakistan shot retaliatory missiles against Iran, killing 9 and raising tensions between the two nations. Houthi rebels struck a Greek-flagged ship in the Red Sea, inflicting light damage. Attacks on shipping threaten the global economy.
A Ukrainian drone strike hit a Russian fuel depot on Friday. American politicians are concerned that funding for Ukraine is drying up and political will is fading as the November election draws closer. Ukraine’s armed forces are asking for 500,000 more soldiers but few want to volunteer and conscription is unpopular. Winter is not as bad as it was two years ago, but shelling continues in the east. Russia is reportedly conscripting 30,000 soldiers every month for the front lines; Zelenskyy calls itcorpse conscription.”
Kim Jong-Un made a speech labeling South Korea as their top enemy, claiming that unification is not possible. North Korea also reportedly conducted an “underwater nuclear weapons systemtest on Friday. China is restructuring its military command, allegedly in preparation for a future Taiwan conquest. NATO commanders are warning of a total War against Russia within 20 years…
In Sudan, 70% of hospitals in conflict-affected areas are unoperational or not fully functioning. Over 7M people have fled, and 13,000+ have been confirmed killed. Other reports say 15,000 were killed last year in Darfur alone. Fighting is also now reported near World Heritage Sites of the ancient Kush Kingdom, and Sudan’s diplomatic ties are breaking down because the leader of the insurgent forces was invited to an East Africa summit in Uganda. The Civil War, which turned 9 months old last week, is not projected to end soon.
Hundreds of arrests have been made, and several alleged terrorists killed, in Ecuador after the violent takeover of a TV station two weeks ago. Some analysts believe that Ecuador’s heavy-handed response—not terribly unlike El Salvador’s recent gang crackdown—will only result in more problems; others are willing to sacrifice others’ human rights in the pursuit of peace and security. Coming soon to a country near you.

Things to watch next week include::
↠ Next week, NATO is holding its largest drills ever, since the end of the Cold War, anyway. Operation Steadfast Defender, they’re calling it. Dozens of ships & fighter jets, 130+ tanks and hundreds of APCs, plus ~90,000 personnel are participating in the wargaming. Exercises are expected to continue through May.
Select comments/threads from the subreddit last week suggest:
-Stress of all kinds has fallen on Texas—and probably everywhere else, judging from this weekly observation from the Lone Star State. Hopelessness, homelessness, radicalization, indifference, debt, and the fracturing of relationships. Collapse takes many shapes and sizes.
-Maybe we should double-check our WWIII panic, says this post advocating caution. However, the comments tell another story.
Got any feedback, upvotes, questions, comments, complaints, go-bag checklists, PDFs, red alerts, geocaches etc.? Check out the Last Week in Collapse SubStack if you don’t want to check collapse every Sunday, you can receive this newsletter sent to your (or someone else’s) email inbox every weekend. What did I miss this week?

2024.01.05 01:43 WithSpace2Grow Follow Vet Advice or Not?

Story Time: I had my pup since 8 weeks. He’ll be 19 months this January. Since then it’s been a struggle to get him to eat and I’ve had battles with bouts of diarrhea. We’d try one food and he would eat a little and then turn into the pickiest eater. And then there were the times with the diarrhea. We’d do a quick fix with rice and beef and he’d be good for a while and then it would happen again.
Well it all came to a head this Thanksgiving. He got the splats after eating one of the digestive bones. And then he got conjunctivitis on top of that. It was so bad that I ended bringing him to the vet and some drops and pills later he started to return to normal. Then it started again a week before Christmas. But it wasn’t as bad so a little hamburger and rice and he started to return to normal. It was at this time we decided, it had to be his food. It was a Blue Buffalo Beef and Rice. It was the only food we could get him to eat. So I had bought a bag of Blue Buffalo Limited Ingredient Salmon. Grain free.
But then it was Christmas Eve and he started vomiting. His poop on the other hand started returning to normal. So I was lost. After a vet trip on Christmas morning we found out he had an allergic reaction. To what, we still have no clue. There was a lot going on. I blame it on my sisters cheap candle, my sister thinks he picked something off the floor. The vet just threw some pills at us and just told us the monitor him.
But to be on the safe side we just gave him the new food. And it was like I got a new dog after the whole ordeal on Christmas. Since that day he eats ALL his food. I could barely get him to even eat a cup of a food and he’s supposed to have at least 3 for his weight. And he is regular with the poo too. I feel like I hear angels and bells ring every time I see those little turds. 💩
But then I went to my regular vet for a check up because the allergy thing was still unresolved. I told them he was finally eating and pooping normal but the itching was still a trouble. They handed me a new medication and ripped me a new one when I told them I was feeding my dog a grain free food. They gave me a handout on why grain free food is bad for dogs. And told me to switch his food to one with grain.
I cut all chicken from his diet. The majority of his breed (Cobberdog) have some sort of protein allergy. It’s usually chicken. So that’s why I picked the food I did. And it seems like that was part of his issue. I even monitored the treats he gets. No chicken touches his mouth and he’s been better for it. But the grain version of the blue buffalo salmon contains chicken meal. In fact, a lot of dog food contains chicken in some form.
My issue is. My dog is finally eating normal. And I don’t want to revert back to old ways. I want to do the right thing, but if chicken is the problem, I don’t want to trigger him just to put grain back into his diet and avoid the pea and legumes found in the grain free version. I don’t have a problem eventually changing his food if I can find one he likes. But I don’t want to do it right away. I feel like rocking a boat that doesn’t need to be rocked.

2024.01.01 17:33 ColonelCandyCorn Marceline the Vampire Queen - Part 2C

Marceline the Vampire Queen - Part 2C
- 'The Dark Cloud' (s7e13) : During the aftermath of the explosion, Finn is busy sifting through the remains of the cabin picking up pieces of Peppermint Butler. Bubblegum tells him that they have a bigger problem to worry about: the Vampire King's escaped essence has formed into a giant, living lion-shaped storm cloud, and it has begun to terrorize and suck up the nearby village along with its villagers. Bubblegum hops onto a mechanical flying sofa and tells Finn, Jake and Marceline that it is up to the four of them to stop the cloud. Marceline, however, decides to stay behind. Upset and dejected, she tells them that fighting vampires in the first place brought nothing but bad things and left her 'screwed up', trying to fix her vampirism only made things worse and that trying to fight the dark cloud will only be another lost cause. Bubblegum tries to reassure her, reminding her of how they have always pulled through as the underdogs, but Marceline flatly refuses.
Bubblegum shows up and flies her sofa up to the cloud, slicing it with an axe and rescuing trapped villagers. Finn and Jake try to get Marceline to join them, but she refuses and they proceed without her. Watching the chaos from the ruined cabin, a defeated Marceline congratulates the Vampire King on finally winning, saying that she only wishes that he had gotten it over with a thousand years ago. She begins to sing the opening lines to 'Was it Reality',\*13]) a song Ice King had taught Marceline in the aftermath of the war, and the Ice King, who had been observing the fight, shows up happy that Marceline had remembered his song. Marceline is surprised to see him and they sit together as she explains the situation. The Ice King reassures her that she is making a good choice by sitting out the fight, explaining how they are both survivors, like 'cockroaches or rats' and that hiding is the obvious option to stay alive. Being called a 'cockroach' actually ends up giving Marceline the motivation to join the fight, which leads the Ice King to claim that that was his intent all along.
In the Candy Kingdom, the Banana Guards are protecting the kingdom's gates. The King of Ooo ignores the commotion outside and relaxes by a fireplace, despite Crunchy's insistence that he do his duty as leader and protect the kingdom. The King of Ooo tells the Banana Guards to close the gates, but they see Bubblegum fighting the cloud and are inspired to defy his orders. Crunchy frees himself from being tied up and pushes the King of Ooo into the fireplace, reducing him to a pile of melted wax. Declaring himself as the new sovereign of the Candy Kingdom, he gathers the citizens of Ooo and motivates them to take weapons and join the fight.
The fight against the cloud rages on, with Bubblegum, Finn, and Jake receiving additional assistance from the villagers, the Candy People, the Fire Kingdom, and Hot Dog Princess's kingdom. To everyone's surprise, Marceline suddenly shows up and flies into the center of the dark cloud. She tries to reason with the Vampire King's essence but soon realises it is now just an unthinking force of destruction. Using her demon powers, she begins to glow and starts to absorb the dark cloud into herself, and as the last of the essence drains away, it bites Marceline leaving two bite marks on her neck making her a vampire once again. The fact that this is entirely analogous to their first fight a thousand years ago only proves the Vampire King's point from their previous conversation. After fully absorbing it, she faints. Finn and Jake shield her from the sunlight and the last thing she hears is Bubblegum calling her name before she wakes up in her home.
Bubblegum says that after she usurps Crunchy and becomes princess again Marceline is welcome to stay in her castle if she feels lonely, but Marceline says that she needs time alone to readjust to being a vampire again. Finn asks Marceline how she feels, unsure whether to feel sorry or happy for her, but Marceline replies that she is fine with being a vampire again and that the experience of being mortal again, even for a brief time, was worth it for the new sense of maturity and empathy she gained from it. After Finn, Jake, and Bubblegum leave, Marceline takes out her bass and sings her mother's old childhood lullaby "Everything Stays" over a closing montage of scenes showing that things have returned to normal in the Land of Ooo.

- 999 A.M.W ('Broke his Crown' (s8e1)) : The episode opens with Bubblegum and Marceline on the way to the Ice Kingdom in order to attend Ice King's dinner party. Bubblebum isn't very excited to go but Marceline ensures her that it will be fun and requests that she address Ice King as Simon. Ice King greets them both with a present as a bribe for coming. Marceline says that they don't need to be bribed into attending, and Ice King takes back the present.
Ice King starts up a karaoke while Marceline gets more drinks and as Bubblegum is about to start singing, Ice King goes mental while his crown sparks and circuitry lines appear across the crown and pulsate red. Bubblegum yells for Marceline to come back and help Ice King, but Ice King is back to normal by the time she comes into the room, making Marceline think they were playing a prank on her, leaving Bubblegum very confused by the whole thing.
For dinner, Ice King serves them 'penguin food' which escentially is 'just shapes'. Bubblegum insists that something is wrong with the crown as she keeps seeing sparks fly out of it while Marceline insists nothing is wrong. Ice King says this date is 'better than the last one'. Bubblegum says that it is not a date, to which Ice King replies 'neither was the last one, it was a robbery' with Betty stealing his crown. This piques Bubblegum's interest, thinking the Crown has been tampered with.
Ice King malfunctions again, smashing plates with his head while Marceline watches in shock. In response, Bubblegum knocks him out as it would be easier to bring him back to the Candy Kingdom for study.
We see Ice King lay unconscious in Bubblegum's lab while the crown is held in a tube full of fluid being studied. A reading comes out of the tube, which Bubblegum interprets as abnormal. She heads over to a VR set which is connected to the crown which allows them to enter the crown which impresses Marceline.
They enter the crown. A large labyrinth forms with roots and leaves growing everywhere and a void round the outskirts of the maze. They enter and soon find Gunther, the dinosaur servant of Urgence Evergreen (creator of the crown and ice elemental who lived 36 million years prior). He wonders how two 'newbies' can enter the maze at the same time. Bubblegum notices the walls are pulsating the same way as the crown was, changing the pattern of the labyrinth whenever it does. Gunther says it's been happening for a while and suggests that they go to the Professor, the smartest person he knows - apart from Master Evergreen.
They walk around the maze, meeting all the previous wearers of the crown who were also possessed by its power and got lost physically and metaphorically in the crown's impossible maze.
They find the Professor, Simon Petrikov, who is examining the pulsating circuitry in the labyrinth walls. Marceline calls out to him and he runs to her, hugging her and asking if Betty has found a way to fix the crown. Marceline says no, the reason they are there is because of Bubblegum. Simon assumes she's Betty's assistant, which angers Bubblegum. Marceline diffuses it, stating that they are in the crown because it's going haywire, affecting Ice King in real life. Simon says he's been following the path of destruction left by the 'malware'.
Simon apologizes to Marceline for the previous time he was in Ooo, focusing too much on Betty and not on her when Betty first came to Ooo, to which Marceline responds with understanding. He also asks if Marceline has a boyfriend. She laughs it off, saying that she did but she dumped him hard, and Simon wishes he had been there to punch his face (ironically he already has from the episode 'Betty' where he punches Ash to steal his magic carpet). While Marceline reassures him that she can punch her own jerks, lightly punching Simon in the shoulder. He laughs it off while whispering "ouch."
The group walks past a corner and finds the source of the malicious coding: A disembodied head of Betty, which Bubblegum assumes is Magic Man due to the hat she is wearing. Betty reveals herself cheerfully, correcting Bubblegum by saying "Magic Woman", then continues to re-code the crown's circuitry walls. Simon runs up to her, shocked to see Betty in her current state. Simon asks what she's doing, and Betty says she's reprogramming the crown's wish magic in order to fix Simon. She exclaims "Aha!" as she enters a code which rearranges the world in the crown.
The groups tries and fails multiple times to capture Betty, who just keeps floating above and away to a different wall to keep on reprogramming. Simon suggests that a part of the real Betty must be in there somewhere. He approaches her, telling her that he's the reason she's doing this, to which she responds "I'm busy." Simon tells her about the time they first met in a library and wanted to check out the same book. He let her have it, and she wrote a note to him. He remembers it fondly as a funny and witty note and begins to tear up. She continues to work and Simon cries that she can't help him like this. An angered Betty says she can and she will, addressing him as Simon. Surprised by this, Simon tells her to stay with that feeling. She snaps back to normal, and flies over to Simon to kiss him.
Marceline looks on in fondness as Bubblegum sees that the crown is stabilizing and reprogramming itself to push out foreign entities. Marceline asks if she can come back and visit Simon, to which Bubblegum says no. Betty asks about herself, and Bubblegum tells her she'll be deleted. Betty apologizes to Simon for almost destroying his world, to which he says that she is his world. Gunther says goodbye and hugs Marceline. Marceline says goodbye as well and says she'll be nicer to Penguins from now on. Gunther says "Okay!" then realizes he has no idea what that meant.
Back at the Ice Kingdom, Ice King doesn't recall anything and concludes it must have been a great dinner party. Bubblegum agrees, saying it's the best she's ever been to, with a surprised Marceline looking at her.
This episode seems to mark the slow forgiveness from Bubblegum toward Ice King for all the wrong he has caused over the years, which delights Marceline. Marceline is now also aware and wary of Betty's plan to save Simon.

- 999 A.M.W ('The Music Hole' (s8e10)) : Marceline attends a concert created and managed by Princess Bubblegum in order to cheer Finn up and bring him out of his depression after breaking the 'Finn Sword' which contained an alternate version of himself. Marceline is seen to be in a band with both Lumpy Space Princess and Death himself. Marceline is dressed in full protective equipment, with long gloves and a visor to protect against the effects of the sun. Marceline begins to sing her love song, which is actually 'Francis Forever' written by real-life artist Mitski. Only to lose her pick half-way through, she demands that the crowd find her pick before she can continue - much to the anger of the audience.

- 999 A.M.W ('Islands Part 1'/ 'The Invitation' (s8e20)) : After the main events of the episode, at the beach, Marceline is sat on a rock with Princess Bubblegum wearing long gloves and holding a parasol and as Susan Strong is loading all of her, Finn's and Jake's stuff into Princess Bubblegum's boat, Bubblegum and Marceline say their goodbyes to Finn and Jake as they leave for the Islands.

- 999 A.M.W ('ELEMENTS miniseries'(s9e2-9)) : While Finn, Jake, BMO and Susan are away on the human islands (during the Island miniseries), the preserved ice elemental Patience St. Pim who has existed since before the Mushroom War finally emerges in the new Land of Ooo to carry out her plan to once again unify all of the elementals. Patience starts small, introducing the elemental powers to each of the current elementals (Princess Bubblegum, Flame Princess and Slime Princess) and guides them to harness and use their powers freely. Bubblegum, initially unreactive to her powers, eventually harnesses them and uses them to her advantage \*14]). However, when Patience attempts to get the princesses to access their 'full evolutionary potential' and fully become their elements, the group, and especially Bubblegum, refuses.
So, Patience must take matters into her own hands whether the princesses like it or not and uses elemental magic to greatly accelerate the growth of each of the elements in their respective kingdom which corrupts the Land of Ooo and all its citizens - making them mindless extensions of the four elements. The geography of the Land of Ooo now changes to four colossal equally sized plates, like a four-sliced pie, each with its own element.
Disgusted and enraged by the corruption of everyone, including the mutiliation of Bubblegum into an entity known as 'The Tower', Marceline seeks out Patience and tracks her down to the now amplified Ice Kingdom where she has taken reign. While Patience does not wish to fight, she is still beaten into submission by a violent Marceline who demands an 'antidote' to the elemental purification. She does recieve an antidote but cannot be sure whether it is real or not, but she decides to take it to the Candy Kingdom in order to save Bubblegum. It is her last and only option.
But when she takes it to the Tower (Bubblegum), Marceline finds that Bubblegum's mind has been completely lost to the elements and outright reject the antidote. After this, Marceline feels depressed and believes there is no point trying to fight the elemental illness. She surrends and is consumed by the candy element. \*15])
The new Land of Ooo
- 'Skyhooks' (s9e2) : Finn, Jake and BMO return from the Islands after a long and tiring adventure away from the Land of Ooo and they return to a completely altered landscape. The Land of Ooo has been completely turned on its head; Finn and Jake find themselves in a now candy infested beach and walk through a candy infested forest to their Treehouse made from pure rock candy and sugar. After their run-in with all the strange, candy versions of the citizens of Ooo, they make their way to 'the Tower' - a strange entitity where they are said to find Princess Bubblegum. When they climb this tower they encounter Marceline however, as said before, she has been consumed by the candy elemental and is now 'Marshmaline the Campire Queen' who is sickeningly sweet and happy. She guides the two to Bubblegum who we learn is the actual tower itself and is connected to all the candy in the Land of Ooo (as well as the whole galaxy) and is responsible for the spread of the candy disease. Bubblegum says that she will 'fix' Finn and Jake like she had done with everyone else and begins to turn them pink with the candy element. Marshmaline holds the two down as the pink slowly consumed their body.
Finn punches Marshmaline in the face in defense, which he is deeply apologetic for, and they escape her grasp. Just as they are about to be consumed, Ice King's skyhook coat hangers are lowered from the clouds above and Ice King tells them to grab them so he can pull them up. They do so, and are pulled off the Tower towards the cloud before they are fully envoloped.
Finn and Jake, after greeting the Ice King, look over and see the new Land of Ooo.

- 'Hero Heart' (s9e8) : Later on in the series, the Fire Kingdom, consumed by the fire element in a similar way to the Candy Kingdom, invades the Candy Kingdom hoping to annihilate them. Finn has also been consumed by the fire element and is joining the charge against the Candy Kingdom. The fire people arrive and Marshmaline takes a certain liking to Flame Princess, although Flame Princess is driven by pure anger while Marshmaline is driven by happiness and fun, this enrages Flame Princess to the point where the two face head to head combat.
Lumpy Space Princess (who has been travelling with the group for most of the series) is upset to see Finn violently tearing apart the candy people and seeing the other fire people do the same. Marshmaline is then burned by Flame Princess to LSP's fright. Marshmaline then allows LSP to taste some of her face, which makes her calmer and brings her to her 'happy place'.
LSP realises she can do the same to Finn; allowing Finn to access his happy place and save him from the fire element's grip. She takes a piece of Bubblegum's face and puts it on Finn's face to send him to his 'happy place'. Finn then recalls his old times with Bubblegum when he was younger and he reverts back to his normal self. Finn then grabs Bubblegum's princess jewel and he and LSP leave.
Bubblegum, who has had enough of this, starts to sing "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" and turns all the fire people into candy people. Even Flame Princess becomes candy and vomits up her jewel which she had swallowed earlier and Finn steals this.
Betty then calls for Finn to give her the jewels. Finn hands her the jewels but Betty laughs maniacally and leaves on the magic carpet with Ice King, leaving Finn and LSP behind. All the candy people then surround a vulnerable Finn, creepily singing "Let Me Call You Sweetheart."

- 'Skyhooks II' (s9e9) : Immediately after the events of the previous episode, Ice King urges Betty to turn back as he stares back, while Betty knocks him out by whacking him over the head with the Enchiridion. Finn, surrounded, screams as LSP grabs his leg and drags him away from the crowd.
Finn and LSP hide in a hollowed-out tree where Finn, concerned that LSP hasn't been affected by any of the elements so far, deduces that LSP is a sort of anti-elemental who can be used to reverse the element purification spell.
Elsewhere, Betty has initiated the portal to the past's creation, meanwhile Ice King tries to reason with her and slides over, still bound up. He dsirupts the spell to open the portal which causes the portal to explode as Betty disappears.
Unsatisfied with her attempts to convert everyone to candy, Bubblegum begins a Ooo-wide song with Marshmaline, which reaches to creatures in the other zones and melts the ice dome where Patience sees her attempt to unify the elements has failed. She freezes herself to be awoken again in the future.
Ice King flies back down to Finn and LSP to join them. Finn asks where Betty went but Ice King says he doesn't know who that is. He hands the Enchiridion over to Finn. Finn says that they should study the Enchiridion to find a way to reverse the spell. This makes LSP grow irritated because Finn told her what to do, which attracts the princess jewels. LSP begins a global cleanse that returns everyone, including Marshmaline, to their original forms. Once done, a crowd gathers around an exhausted LSP to cheer for her as their hero.

- 999 A.M.W ('Ketchup' (s9e11)) : sThe episode begins in Marceline's house where she hears a knock at the door. She opens it to find BMO in full vampire-hunting gear equipped with a frilly gothic outfit holding wooden stakes. BMO offers his assistance to Marceline to hunt all the vampires (from the Stakes miniseries) to which Marceline laughs and says that they had already wiped them out some six months before.
Disappointed, BMO starts to leave before Marceline stops him in as she needs some technical assistanced with an old flash drive needed to be recovered. BMO inserts the drive but tells Marceline that the process will take some time, so she proposes that they catch up to pass the time. Marceline starts off with asking BMO how his boat trip went with Finn and Jake (Island miniseries). BMO, in typical unhelpful fashion, tells a mostly nonsensical account of the trip to the Islands, where Finn and BMO are sailing on Jake who has taken the shape of a boat. The three land on a small island and then collapse from fatigue. The island spontaneously transforms into a cat with legs on its back. While the trio ride on the cat's back, a large blue jay hollering comes into sight. Others boats flying into the sky come near the crew, and Finn begins singing a song in his sleep. BMO's flashback ends with the cat and other boats flying off into the clouds.
BMO finishes his story and finally notices that Marceline has moved to the kitchen. It's shown that Marceline is constructing puppets for her story. BMO gets very excited about this.
Marceline then begins to retell the events of the Elements miniseries. However, she simplifies it for BMO, referring to herself as 'Rockstar girl', Princess Bubblegum as 'Lollipop girl' and Patience St. Pim as the 'Blue tranch'. She describes the candy elemental takeover as a 'potato virus' which consumes everyone including the Lollipop girl. Rockstar girl then confront the Blue tranch for an antidote to the virus but soon finds it would be uneffective in reverting everyone back to normal. Rockstar girl surrenders herself to the virus as she believes there is no other option. The story finishes and BMO states that the data from the flash drive has been recovered.
BMO then projects the pictures from the drive onto a wall and the two begin watching the slideshow. Images of Marceline as a young girl and her mother appear and Marceline orders BMO to pause the slideshow. Marceline runs to the projected images and is touched by the sight of her mother after all these years. BMO questions Marceline on who the people are in the slideshow, which causes Marceline to hesitate and ask BMO to tell her a story using the people in the photo instead.
BMO begins to tell a story with Marceline's mom referred to as 'Moon Lady', a character that can only come out during lunar eclipses. Moon Lady comes to the beach to play with the little girl and the two become best friends. BMO then imagines a sequence of activities the two do together. After a day of playing the Moon Lady had to leave as the eclipse starts to disappear. The little girl never forgot about the Moon Lady or their friendship.
The sequence ends and Marceline is tearfully looking at a photo of herself and her mother hugging each other reminding her of her relationship with her mother many years ago. Marceline tells BMO that his story was beautiful and BMO tells Marceline that the picture is beautiful.

- 999 A.M.W ('Bonnibel Bubblegum' (s10e4)) : The episode begins with Finn, Jake, Princess Bubblegum and Marceline relaxing and swimming at an apple cider pond. Finn brings Bubblegum a cup full of cider. This cup was previously given to BMO by a mysterious scientist in 'Always BMO Closing' (s10e2). Bubblegum says that it reminds her of a cup her Uncle Gumbald once had. Finn then asked the princess to tell them about her family. Though reluctant, Bubblegum decides to tell them and recounts the story of her family some 800 years prior. Although not stated, Marceline probably knew most of this story beforehand, but Finn and Jake at least learn the full tale of Princess Bubblegum.
Back in the present, in which the group is now in the Tree Fort. Washing the cup, Bubblegum sees that it actually is one of the monogrammed cups Gumbald had made 800 years ago. Shocked, she asked BMO where he got the cup. BMO then said that the man on the cup gave it to him, revealing that Gumbald is back somehow.

- 1000 \*16]) A.M.W ('Seventeen' (s10e5)) : It is Finn's seventeenth birthday!!! Princess Bubblegum throws him a party to celebrate. However, it has to be a small party, consistent of only a few of Finn's close friends like Marceline and Huntress Wizard and a handful of Banana Guards, due to the Candy Kingdom being in lockdown, due to the issues with Gumbald. After the presents, a mysterious green figure calling himself the 'Green Knight' appears with a proposition for Finn. He comes with an axe for Finn, one that he may only receive given he strikes the Green Knight on the head with it.
Finn, believing it to be one of Jake's 'classic birthday pranks', agrees to the Knight's game and slices the Knight's head clean off. Covered in green 'blood', Finn wonders when Jake will appear. Jake does but tells him that that wasn't his prank. In the background, the Green Knight replaces his head and stands up straight to look at the others. The Knight says that now it is his turn to strike him. Finn bargins with the Knight, wagering that if he can beat him in two out of three party games, that he can strike Finn - otherwise the Knight must leave.
The Green Knight pushes Marceline and the others away from Finn using an invisible shield so it can be more 'fair'. Finn then engages in a three-round tournament of party games where they each win one game, making Finn very cocky. Meanwhile, Huntress Wizard confirms that the Green Knight cheated on his game which makes them increasingly scared for Finn. With the rest of the group unable to warn Finn, Finn agrees to play the final challenge... Arm wrestling. Marceline and the group watch on as Finn and the Knight first seem to be equally matched. This is just a ploy by the Knight and his knight's helmet covering his face disappears revealing the Green Knight to be Fern (a being made by the fusion of an alternate Finn and a grass demon). After this revelation, Finn is completely dominated in the arm wrestle and is thrown to the ground by Fern who holds the axe above his head ready to strike Finn.
However, he is stopped by a disembodied voice coming from the horse he rode in on which turns out to be a mechanical trolley driven by Bubblegum's family (Lolly, Chicle and Gumbald) discussed from 'Bonnibel Bubblegum' who commands that Fern has 'done enough' and stand down. Gumbald plans to devolve Bubblegum into a candy person to show her how it feels. Before he can, Marceline steps in to guard Bubblegum. She tells Gumbald to back off. He does back off, as Marceline is 'legitimately scary'. However, he claims that he has much greater technology than Bubblegum and that he will return. Gumbald, Chicle, and Lolly leave, and Fern follows.

- 1000 A.M.W ('Marcy and Hunson' (s10e7)) : Finn finally admits he needs a new sword, so he enlists the help of Peppermint Butler, who forges the 'Night Blade', and then summons Hunson Abadeer to bless it with 'Nightosphere magic'. So Hunson is once again released into Ooo and obviously tries to harvest souls, but Peppermint Butler binds him with a spell, rendering him powerless in Ooo. Hunson then decides to accompany Finn and Jake to his daughter Marceline's house.
Marceline is getting ready to perform at a concert for ghosts at the Hamburger Hills Cemetery and is frustrated when her father unexpectedly turns up at her house. Although she tries to avoid mentioning the concert so that her father will not secretly go, it is inevitably revealed and Hunson forces his way into her concert. Marceline performs her song 'Slow Dance' which contains a lot of subtext relating to Marceline and Bubblegum's relationship. Meanwhile, Hunson accidentally gets into a brawl with several ghosts. Because he is still bound by Peppermint Butler's magic, he is unable to defend himself. Finn manages to fight off the ghosts with his new sword, and then Marceline transforms into a bat, grabs the others, and flies away.
At the end of the episode, Marceline, Finn, Jake, and Hunson meet up with Bubblegum in a restaurant; Marceline thanks her dad for trying to support her, even if he caused a scene. Once again the rift between them slowly heals.
Throughout the episode, Chicle disguises himself as a ghost and spies on Marceline to learn her weaknesses as per the request of Gumbald, as Gumbald deems Marceline to be one of Bubblegum's more powerful allies.

- 1000 A.M.W THE GREAT GUM WAR / ('COME ALONG WITH ME' (s10e13-16)) : From the events of 'Gumbaldia' (s10e12), after Finn and Jake's failed attempt at a peaceful solution, war is officially declared on Gumbald by Bubblegum. The opening act of the episode sees Finn and Jake performing a reconnaissance mission on behalf of Bubblegum who is discussing her battle plans with her allies, including: Marceline, Flame Princess, Huntress Wizard, Lemongrab, Lumpy Space Princess, The Duke of Nuts, Cinnamon Bun, Colonel Candy Corn, and Lady Rainicorn. While surveying the battleground, Finn and Jake spot a very odd sight... they see King Man (AKA Normal Man and formely Magic Man whose magic powers have since transferred to Betty), Betty and Maja the Sky Witch floating above the battleground atop a flying carpet. King Man and Betty seem to be performing some ancient ritual and Maja lays unconsious and bound with rope. Straight after, the two return to Bubblegum's tent and tell her of the strange sight - which is quickly interrepted when they find that a Gumbaldian spy has just filmed all of Bubblegum's tactics and streamed them to Gumbald himself. Bubblegum declares that is it now or never and leaves to sound the warhorn.
Marceline blocks her way and sincerely asks Bubblegum to reconsider and call off the war, saying that she has been through something like this before and knows the horrors of war. Bubblegum refuses and continues to her army, saying that she will speak to her after it's all over. Finn overhears this and has serious doubts that Bubblegum is right and he and Jake devise a plan to avert the war entirely...
After Bubblegum sounds the warhorn, Finn tries to convince her to give Gumbald one last chance to surrender before the fighting starts. Bubblegum agrees. However, when the two meet, tensions instantly start up again and the plan Finn and Jake devised has to come into action. As a last resort attempt to stop the war, Jake unleashes the nightmare juice (given to him and Finn by Nightmare Princess in 'Orb' (s9e1)) forcing him, Finn, Bubblegum, Gumbald, and Fern into a hallucinatory sleep full of dreams. To everyone else on the battleground, it looks as though the group has spontaneously died.
While the group are asleep, the war is at a standstill - however, due to time running slower in a dream state, this doesn't last long. The group wakes up after some time and are miracuously now friendly towards each other. Fern also seems to have suffered some damage and is disintegrating slowly. Bubblegum and Gumbald, still shook by the experience in the dream, call off the war. \*17])
Just as conflict seems to have ended, King Man suddenly appears from thin air and lands in a fireball on the battleground. Everyone looks up to the sky. The skys darken, a large black portal opens and GOLB himself descends upon Ooo. GOLB was summonded by King Man and Betty believing him to be the key to save their respective significant others (Margles and Simon). GOLB seeps volumes of dark green energy from his mouth which transforms a large portion of Gumbald's army into a horrific four-legged monster. Marceline tells Bubblegum that the beast must be stopped, or it could mean Ooo's destruction. Bubblegum orders her Banana Guards to run away to save their lives, but Finn, Jake, Marceline, Flame Princess, Huntress Wizard, LSP, Lemongrab, Lady Rainicorn, and Fern stay behind to fight GOLB and defend Ooo. The Gumball Guardians attempt to stop the monster, but one of them is shattered. Finn, Jake, King Man and Ice King attempt to snap Betty out of her trance so she can help them banish GOLB. Meanwhile, a remaining Gumball Guardian attempts to restrain the four-legged monster but is mutated into another monster instead.
https://preview.redd.it/4vjlmj5dtu9c1.png?width=185&format=png&auto=webp&s=a97626ac910df2e4753e0fed83e229c990c245c5
Ice King is able to reach through Betty's trance and awaken her. Realizing that he is trying to stop her, Betty becomes angry and releases an emotional supercharge that kills Maja and hurls her and Ice King into GOLB's mouth. Finn follows them, but GOLB's jaw closes on Finn's mechanical arm, which is snapped off and hits the ground below. Flame Princess is overwhelmed by the mutated Gumball Guardian, and Marceline attacks it. The other mutated monster attacks Bubblegum and Fern, and although Fern tries to protect her, he is knocked aside leaving Bubblegum vulnerable against the beast. The creature stomps Bubblegum, and in retaliation, Marceline releases her vampire essence, transforming into the dark cloud (Vampire King's form from 'The Dark Cloud'), and is able to destroy the mutated creature before it can cause further harm. Bubblegum, who was protected by a force field she had activated, is embraced by Marceline. Marceline confesses that she was terrified that Bubblegum would die and never wants to lose her again. Bubblegum assures Marceline she is a 'tough gum'. The two laugh and the two kiss each other lovingly. From this moment on, the two resume their relationship.
https://preview.redd.it/f5ox9w3etu9c1.png?width=185&format=png&auto=webp&s=6cd518af54f34c4e3de28d101e70e6cc6cb0a9a0
The battle rages on outside while Finn, Ice King and Betty are 'digested' by GOLB and reverted back to their 'essential' forms - like Ice King turning back to Simon and Betty losing her magic powers.
Outside, the four-legged monster leaves the battleground after incapacitating most of the heroes who stayed to defend Ooo and heads towards the Treehouse. Jakes sees this and psychs himself up for the battle of a lifetime. He slams the monster but is smashed into the ground himself, leaving him to watch in horror as the Treehouse is obliterated in front of his eyes with BMO still inside... Lying in the ruins of the Treehouse, Jake begins to panic and BMO - now with a cracked face - comes to comfort Jake. BMO begins singing the song 'Time Adventure', which creates an invisible force field that prevents GOLB's mutated creatures from touching him and Jake. Eventually, realizing that GOLB is vulnerable to music, the song is joined in by Bubblegum and Marceline and later, every occupant in the battleground. The music causes a hole to tear through GOLB's skin and Finn and Simon escape from inside GOLB, although Betty decides to stay behind and use the Ice Crown (which has been restored to its primal wishing form) to wish GOLB out of existence. When this doesn't work, she wishes instead that Simon is protected at all costs. As a result, Betty is fused with GOLB and the two become one singular entity. Devastated at Betty's decision, Simon cries out for her as the new GOLBETTY entity leaves Ooo through another portal. Marceline, amazed by Simon's return, comforts him.
The whole story of the Great Gum War and the arrival of GOLB is retold by BMO one thousand years later to future inhabitants of Ooo Shermy and Beth who ask what happened to everyone afterward, to which BMO replies that they went on and 'lived their lives'.
The episode ends with a very emotional montage of what the characters did soon after the events of this last episode played to the full version of 'Island Song' which is the outro music for every episode up to now; we see Bubblegum and Lolly become allies who combine their kingdoms, Simon attempting to wish Betty back in the Timeroom which fails, Bubblegum, Marceline, LSP, Flame Princess and Slime Princess continuing to hang out together, Marceline and Bubblegum wholesomely sitting in Marceline's house cosied up under a blanket while Simon and Turtle Princess make popcorn and Peppermint Butler reads a dark magic book, and the humans arrive in Ooo after leaving the Islands.
For now, the characters live happily ever after...

[*13] - The song doesn't represent anything in specific but I think it represents how, when you have lived for a thousand years and will continue to live for a thousand years, every moment - happy or sad - is a just a flash of memory...
[*14] - Patience St. Pim is introduced in 'Elemental' (s8e8) and plants the seed of elemental powers in the current elementals in Ooo. She later secretly trains Princess Bubblegum in 'Jelly Beans Have Power' (s8e19) where she sends a powerful ice/crystal entity to the Candy Kingdom for her to fight. We can assume she did the same tactic for the other elementals as well.
[*15] - This story is retold by Marceline to BMO during 'Ketchup' (s9e11)
[*16] - Finn is 17 years old as of this episode.
[*17] - Technically Gumbald still intended to betray Bubblegum even after all this but is himself betrayed by Aunt Lolly who douses him in the 'dum-dum juice' and reverts him back to Punch Bowl for the forseeable future. Aunt Lolly accepts the armistice on Gumbald's behalf and the war is then over between Bubblegum and Gumbaldia.
