Chronic hypocalcemia can be asymptomatic or present with subtle symptoms, while even a mild acute reduction in serum calcium levels can precipitate severe symptoms.

Hi everyone, I was wondering what is the best and vitamin-rich meat if you're intolerant to histamine.
I hear a lot about grass-fed beef but in France, it isn't accessible everywhere... I've heard of calf-liver too (but I've read some people react to these too, but maybe it was beef liver for them, I wouldn't know)
So far, I only seems to suffer from HI so the standard low-histamine diet suits me. I mitigate the side effects with CBD and it helps a little. It seems a little difficult to get proper amounts of B12 though and the thing is, I know I'm deficient in it... Hence my interest in meats.
Does anyone have some suggestions with that ? I already supplement iron+vit. C and zinc, separately (very early in the morning for zinc so it doesn't compete with other things) and I wish I could also have other things/food routines that may help me to heal from this.
I react kind of well to eggs although they sometimes seems to feed my candida (biotin from it I assume) But they seems to have good benefits for my energy levels.

PS : I seems to have candida flare-ups that comes and go... Could be the origin of my HI as it reacts to natural anti-biofilms aimed at candida. But I wouldn't know for sure (I've been tested for UTI and my last doctor told me the infection was "beheaded"... He saw no bacteria, I'm guessing it was thanks to olive oil I took maybe...)

DISCLAIMER: I don't mean to stereotype and I will rate then based on my experiences.
And yun, medj bored ako ngayon kaya naisipan kong gawin to.
Andito na ako sa Canada for 6 years and ayon nga, may iba-ibang lahi na akong nakakahalubilo XD
1. Indians: Simulan natin sa kanila. I should say na distinct talaga accent nila. Pero di ako hirap intindihin ang mga sinasabi nila sa totoo lang. Work-wise, di pala reklamo mga Indyano. In terms of industriousness, parehas ng level sa mga Pinoy tbh. And siguro maswerte lang ako pero mababango ang mga nakasama kong Indians. Ang ayaw ko sa most sa kanila is medj narcissistic ang iba which is mapapa huh kana lang internally. 7/10 for me.
2. Middle Easterns (Arabic): May isa lang akong nakahalubilong arabo. Medyo di maganda experience ko sa kanya kase may anger issues. Just by that, di ko muna sila irerate.
3. Black People: BEH ANG BABAIT NGA MGA KILALA KONG BLACKS. Nung una akala ko malakas accent nila pero nope. Ang smooth nila magsalita. Siguro ganon ang Black Americans pero native sila from Africa yung mga nakahalubilo ko. Maganda communication skills nila and maaasahan ang vibes. 8/10 for me.
4. Koreans: Medyo match sa stereotype na may pagka RBF sila. They are mostly introverted and soft-spoken. AND ANG GANDA NILA MANAMIT. Isang irk ko sa kanila is medyo di ko sila naiintindihan pag nagsasalita :( 5/10 for me
5. Pinoy: Alam mong Pinoy sila pag naka porma, nag peperfume, asal mayaman (hindi lahat), at higit sa lahat, MAINGAY. Nung konti pa lang mga Pinoy dito, matutuwa ka talaga kase may kabayan. Nowadays na dumarami na Pinoy dito medyo di na nagpapansinan (can't blame them tho, mostly may circle na sila or pamilya). Work-wise, di pala reklamo at maparaan ang Pinoy. Ang cons naman eh may iba na dinadala ang asal Pinoy dito. And may iba na mayayabang. May mga Pinoy na nagpopost ng videos na naka shorts lang sa snow which is for me, nayayabangan talaga ako tbh. Kung tatanungin ako kung gusto ko ba nga may Pinoy na katrabaho, sasabihin ko "Oo, pero isa lang." 9/10 kung isang Pinoy lang kasama, 6/10 pag marami.
6. Canadians: ANG BAIT NILA BEH. Sobrang iba sa stereotype Americans. Panay sorry nila kahit sa small inconvenience. And panay "eh" and "yeah no yeah" nila HAHA. Most of the older ladies eh ang ssweet. May kasamang "darling", "love", at "hun" ang customer service workers. Isang downside na nakikita ko sa kanila is medj mababa resilience nila and super vulnerable ng mental health nila. I suspect dahil sa weather nila and di sila gaano nakaka benefit from Vitamin D. 7/10 for me.
7. French Canadians: Iba vibes nila compared sa Canadians. Mostly nasa Quebec sila or Northern New Brunswick. May pagka RBF, soft-spoken and di naman malakas pananalita nila pero parang medj strong ang accent nila compared to France French na romantic pakinggan. I kinda have bad experiences sa kanila and either di sila marunong mag English or ayaw mag English. 5/10 for me.
8. Native Canadians: Iba sila sa Canadians. Sila ang Indigenous and First Nations na Canadian. ANG BAIT DIN NILA BEH. Iba mannerism nila pero welcoming sila and super willing to help. Tayong mga Pinoy bet natin ang mga Native Canadian to the point na involved sila sa Filipino Community Events dito. Maganda experiences ko sa kanila and dahil jan, it's a 10/10 for me.
9. Vietnamese: May dalawang klaseng Vietnamese ang mahahalubilo mo dito. Una, ang mukhang Intsik, ang isa eh akala mo Pinoy. Sila yung mababait na kapitbahay natin and pag may Pinoy, may kaibigan yang Vietnamese. 7/10 for me.

12. Americans: Masasabi ko is you can see the difference between Americans and Canadians through the way they speak. Outgoing-ish ang Canadians while Strong ang english ng Americans. Medj mapride ang nakilala ko but I guess I need to meet more Americans kaya di ko muna sila irerate.

I can't get Botox due to cost reasons.
I can't use high % Vitamin A products ( retinol, retinaldehyde, retinoic acid ) due to rare side effect of extreme hairloss.
I use A313 cream from France which is retinyl palmitate ( weaker than retinol )
Does someone over here know how to reduce the appearance of 11 lines without botox and without high strength Vitamin A products?

Hi everyone! I’m (19F) a first year student in medical school (in my country you do an entrance exam upon finishing high school and immediately enter medical school). Anyway, I’ve been struggling a lot this year. This might be a little long but here’s a little bit of background.
I’ve always been the smart kid, a little « weird », the « nerd », you know? Didn’t have that many friends cause I guess I struggled forming lasting relationships/friendships, but it was okay cause I loved to read. Anyway, I’m good with people now, pretty friendly and love to make conversation and get to know people but I still struggle with friends sometimes. Not the point, so moving on.
I was always first in my class (or at least top 3) up until the 10th grade, I started scoring in the 80s instead of 90s. 11th grade was online so I was fine, scoring like 80s-85s cause I would teach myself stuff and watch the online videos on my own time. Then came senior year, the summer before I had juggled several things at the same time, SATs, two clubs, two volunteering opportunities, French and German proficiency exams, applying to universities in the US (8 diff applications) as well as my home country and to France too. It was… a lot. Come senior year, I was all burnt out. Just done. Went from my initial grades to 65s. I live in a pretty conservative place, so mental health isn’t really a thing. I was labelled as « lazy ». Took my parents a lot of convincing to let me see a psychologist, and when he said I was burnt out (which I already know, I was pretty well read on the matter and just wanted to be sure), my parents didn’t believe it and thought I was just looking for excuses. Anyway, they did help me with my studies and I had a couple tutors, so I ended up graduating high school with high honors. I do have to note though, that from 10-12th grade, I always always left my studies until the last minute. I procrastinate a lot, I have trouble getting started on tasks, even if I WANT to do them and I know I HAVE to do them, I just cant ever actually get started.
Last year I moved to France, competition is fierce in med, it was hard. I was diagnosed with depression and had gained a lot of weight due to health issues. Now I’m back in my country, I was prescribed a light anti-depressant, and blood tests showed I was deficient in vitamin D, B12 and folic acid so I’m taking those. I have also started exercising again, and I can definitely tell you that my life has improved, but the procrastination and crap focus are still very much there.
My psychiatrist recommended to do the TOVA test, and I’ll be honest that I suspect adhd too, I find myself HEAVILY relating to a lot of symptoms. But it could just as easily be depression or anxiety. Plus the process is long and expensive and I’m scared of ending up “normal” and having wasted everyone’s time and money. The main problem as well is that my parents are super against it and keep insisting nothing is wrong with me, even though it has caused a lot of tension between us. They’re saying I don’t care about them and how much they’re sacrificing for me or else I would actually be trying to study. I don’t know how to tell them I really am trying, and I really think the problem is bigger here. The last minute productivity hasn’t kicked in yet and I’m getting scared honestly. I keep on pushing it until there’s no time and I don’t know why I do this, its exhausting and I cannot keep on living this way.
There’s also the fact that the diagnosis and acquiring medication process is sooo long, my finals are in a few weeks so I really will take any advice/tips you can give me :/

Hello, throwaway account for obvious reasons.
Me and my fiance have a 9 month old baby together. We have been in a relationship for about 2 and a half years now and engaged since the summer.
We are renting a 2 bedroom terraced house which is small but not awful in anyway. She does not invite her family or friends around because "its too small", ect, and goes around to see them instead with our son as she is on maternity leave. I reject this as the majority of houses in our area are a similar size and even her parents house is the same size just a different layout.
For reference her family all live within the local town and it is only around a 5 minute drive away for them to get to us so this is quite easy to do. My parents live around 40 minutes away so having a baby it is much harder to go visit them especially in evenings after I finish work.
So to get around this I have asked if it is okay for my parents, who are the grandparents, to come around to the house so they can spend sometime with their grandson and also see me (their son).
Every time I ask she gets very upset and moody at this and generally makes my life hell, stroping around and accusing me of being obsessed by my mother. This is despite her going around to her own parents anywhere between 2-4 times per week while I see my parents once a week and as stated causes arguments when I do.
She says that she is not comfortable with my mother as when she had just given birth she gave us some printouts for various post partum related topics like bottle feeding/breastfeeding and also gave my partner some vitamins to help her. But I remember at the time my mother asked my Fiance if she would like them and she said yes okay, however now she is saying it was overbearing and feels like my mother views her as a child with her grandson rather than the "Mum". I disagree with my Fiance on this as my mother was only trying to help and asked if we would like what was offered to us, following discussions from us.
In the end I gave into my Fiance and put boundaries in place with my parents that we would try to see them once per week and this is the new normal, despite her parents having around 2-3 times a week with our son. I did say that I did not think it was fair to my Fiance but she shut me off, telling me this is normal in families to be closer to the maternal grandparents.
Another issue is that my mother is a early years teacher / specialist and a couple of times while playing with our baby has made a few comments about his development. My fiance does not like this and views it as if the grandmother is judging our baby. I have tried to explain that this isnt the case and my mother is just trying to identify our grandson's behaviours so that she can bond with him. I tried to resolve this by politely asking my mother to stop making these comments, which part of me now regrets because it has resulted in my mother being quite afraid to say anything in case it causes upset to my Fiance.. Kind of like walking on eggshells?
All of this has recently came to a head this week. My mother had an accident and broke her arm and is due for an operation in a few days. My mother has my sister to help her day to day when she is not working, but cannot drive. My father has been away in France and is coincidentally returning on the day of my mums operation, as foot passenger. The hospital is in the town where we live, so I have offered to pick up my mother from the hospital after I finish work and bring her to our house for approximately 2 hours before my father arrives from the airport and my sister can drive her back to their house.
When I told my Fiance she became very upset at this and suggested that my mother should wait at the hospital until my father gets back, or alternatively I should drive my mother back to the house and that my dad should get a bus, with full suitcases after a full day of travel back from France... We got into an argument and I told her that they are close family and they are welcome into our home to help them out when they are in need. She said it is a bad time to host guests in the evening because we are weening our baby and he can get upset. But it is okay for my Fiance's parents to be around in those situations albeit at their house. I pointed this out to her and she made some mocking voices about my mother sitting on our sofa unable to help while our son is crying.
I held my ground in the argument and told her this was happening and if she is not happy she should deal with it because it is tough. Family should be welcome in situations like this and It is not like I ask this of her constantly. She proceeded to storm out the house and go for a drive somewhere. When she returned the arguments continued and I lost it and shouted at her asking why she has a problem with my family, which I now regret but I was pushed to the edge.
I told her that as this is an ongoing problem in our relationship that I want us to go to a relationship therapist and she responded very negatively telling me that was a red flag for the relationship and she is done with our relationship because I said that.
My partner has suffered from an abusive partner when she was 17/18 and it sadly left her with anxiety after the court process. She went through therapy but I think it was not successful and she gave it up. So she now has decided that she will not go try to resolve our situation, and completely refuses to compromise or understand my feeling that I want my parents to play a part in the grandchilds life, and also not to have arguments and feel controlled when people are welcome to come around.
She has told me she is done with our relationship over this now and that she just thinks we are too different in this sense and that I should have known this is her personality before deciding to have a child with her, although this is not a fair comment either as there was no indication she would act like this before we did.
I really need some help and advice on what to do next. I do want to try and salvage my relationship with my partner for the sake of our child but also want her to stop they way she acts with not respecting that I would like to see my parents once a week and for our son to see them too, and the endless arguments it causes when I try to make a plan to see them or for them to pop around for a cup of tea.

So she now has decided that she will not go try to resolve our situation, and completely refuses to compromise or understand my feeling that I want my parents to play a part in the grandchilds life, and also not to have arguments and feel controlled when people are welcome to come around.
She has told me she is done with our relationship over this now and that she just thinks we are too different in this sense and that I should have known this is her personality before deciding to have a child with her, although this is not a fair comment either as there was no indication she would act like this before we did.
I really need some help and advice on what to do next. I do want to try and salvage my relationship with my partner for the sake of our child but also want her to stop they way she acts with not respecting that I would like to see my parents once a week and for our son to see them too, and the endless arguments it causes when I try to make a plan to see them or for them to pop around for a cup of tea.

A bit of backstory, I am from puerto rico and my wife is from suburban Kansas city. I moved to nyc in 1984 and she moved here at 18 for college and fell in love with the city. We actually met at a bar and had a one night stand... and she got pregnant. At first we wanted her to get an abortion, but we kinda fell in love at first one-night-stand and got married when our son was 3 months old.
We are VERY VERY different people. I am from the south bronx and grew up extremely rough, I got into fights, have gotten stabbed, gotten shot at... not a great upbringing. I wasn't the worst kid but my friends were truly bad people, but i mostly got out of that lifestyle by the time i met her.
So basically, we've raised our son and have had our ups and downs but we are both successful at our jobs and what not. But in the past year or two, her attitude towards certain things have changed. Here's just a list of what I'm talking about:
• She refuses to eat gluten. This should give you a staple of the stereotype she fits into now.
• She is now 100% vegan and gets extremely mad when we eat meat in the house.
• She goes to yoga 3 times a week and cries when we don't want to go with her
• She suddenly doesnt like movies with violence or drugs or partying... she gets extremely protective of our son about this.
• She doesnt let our son hang out with his friends sometimes because the friends are too 'rowdy' and come from 'uncultured' families.
• She doesnt let our son bike around the neighborhood with his friends at all, she needs to constantly be with him when he is hanging out.
• She literally took his ipod and CHANGED THE MUSIC TO WHAT SHE CONSIDERS GOOD MUSIC. This consists of justin timberlake and mumford and sons, macklemore, taylor swift type stuff mostly. Our son liked electronic dance music and metal a lot. This was one of the worst things she did in my opinion.
• She thinks that I am too 'masculine' in the way I act and constantly tries to correct the way I act, saying I have toxic masculinity in me. She uses this near constantly when I tell her I don't like how she babies our son.
• She calls the cops on basically any crime she sees, including one time when we walked by a house party and she called the cops because 'underaged drinking was happening' and she wants to keep her community safe. One time she also called the cops because a few spanish teens were playing soccer in the street and she just 'assumed' they were up to no good. That made me insanely upset.
Honestly this is just the tip of the iceberg. This has been her for the past 2-3 years and we have gotten into near constant arguments about this. I tell her she is too sensitive about nearly everything and then she goes off on rants and tries to show me all these weird articles about how what I am doing is gaslighting her...
She also is trying really, really hard to act 'young'. Like she goes to indie shows in williamsburg filled with 22 year old hipsters and tries to chat people up to make friends. Then when she gets rejected or something like that from those indie circles, she comes home and cries in my arms and is depressed for days. She wants so badly to be apart of that crowd, she seems to have anxiety and depression issues. I do honestly feel bad for her, she keeps up this insane persona, she describes herself as a modern day hippy, she spends all her time checking out 'new cafes and brunch spots' with her friends.
I know how this started, she got a job at this new office filled with young yuppies. Basically right after that she changed into this, I think to keep up with her co workers, but its clearly turned into something much more devastating and self-esteem damaging than that. I just want her to be herself, not this crazy person trying to perfect everything around her to fit her world view.
Interestingly enough If you have ever seen S3E1 of Black Mirror, she reminds me INSANELY of the main character of that episode, but more willing to disrupt everything around her to fit what she wants, even if it inconveniences others. But this is all recent. She was never like this 4 years ago, she was just a regular working woman who liked to relax and hang out and didnt taken much seriously like she does now. We used to get drunk at dive bars together, we used to party a bit even.
It all hit a bad point about a week ago when my son, who also has been in conflict with her nearly constantly, got into a major argument with her. The argument was over whether he can hang out with his friends who were outside, and she said no because there were too many of them and she thought it was bad to hang out in such large groups. This is the type of shit she thinks about. I know she REALLY didnt want him out there because the kids were mostly black and spanish... but he is half puerto rican. He got so mad he took dishes and began shattering them on the ground, then he left, and didn't come back for 5 hours while my wife hysterically cried and called the cops to find him. Since then, he is not allowed to leave the house, and my wife has cried nightly for 'losing' our son. She has become extra horrible towards me and my son, she thinks I am on his side simply because I tried to defend him and say she was overreacting. But everytime I say she is overreacting she has a breakdown and says I am just doing what men do to women...
I don't even know what to do anymore. I know that this isn't her. I know that she has developed some serious mental problems in the past 2-3 years... I know this isn't normal for her. I don't want to divorce her, but I'm not sure if I can handle this any longer. She has broken down, she is in bed crying nearly all day. She will sometimes go off yelling at me that I am the 'epitome of toxic masculinity' and then an hour later be crying in my arms saying she loves me more than anything. Is this some type of personality disorder? Does she need therapy? What can I say to make her calm down? I was thinking about writing a heartfelt letter about the way she has been acting, that way she cant interrupt me like she usually does with the screaming. I don't want to argue, I just want to make my point and have her respond. But I dont want to seem as if i disapprove of her entire lifestyle and everything she has done. What the hell do I do? I feel so passive in this situation. And she goes NUTS when she sees me acting completely normal while she is crying or yelling or whatnot, as if everytime she is acting crazy, I have to act crazy too about whatever she is crazy about at the moment. What the fuck do i do?? I do not want a divorce, I want to help her, we both still very much love each other despite this madness.
tl;dr: Wife is becoming insanely controlling and is trying to warp our family to her crazy way of life. Recently our son got into a massive argument and broke stuff in the house and since then she has fallen off the iceberg of insanity. I do not want a divorce.

I think your wife has fallen into the "perfect modern woman" trap. A lot of women get this idea in their head that they have to be a perfect model of femininity, feminism, motherhood, strength, sexuality, youthfulness, social awareness, cultural awareness, etc.. and frankly there is no woman alive that can be that perfect so it just spirals into panic, and feelings of failure.
Your wife needs therapy. You have to sit her down and lay it all out, and tell her therapy is a must for your family to feel whole and peaceful. She needs to understand how serious this is.

Also it helps that it seems to be a common problem with women her age, so she isnt alone. I just want her to know that especially, because i bet she looks around and believes all the women around her, especially at her job, are 'perfect modern women'.

Let me share something with you as an ex-vegan. Her emotional distress could very well be due to a vitamin D and/or B12 deficiency. I know, it sounds crazy but that shit is real and it makes you a depressed weeping whacko. Vegans usually do not get enough vit D or B12 through their diet and both should be supplemented. This is scientifically documented. Is she taking a B12 supplement?
Her other crazy behaviors are more likely related to depression and a sudden feeling like she has no identity. She really could benefit from some therapy or at least some parenting classes to help her find tools to connect back to your son without damaging the relationship. Personally, I think she sounds too controlling over him, but a lot of parents start this kind of behavior when they suddenly realize their kids are independent.
First, tell your wife she needs to be taking B12 supplements at the very least, and ideally vit D too. See if that helps mellow out her moods. I was shocked at what a difference it made in mine.

Feeling like she has no identity is the perfect way to describe it. She came to nyc a totally normal girl in a city of extremely interesting people and i think when she came face to face with that side of the city at her new job she just became overwhelmed with jealous for that lifestyle. Its almost like if she cant be the perfect modern woman (as someone else who commented described it) she cant be anything.
I am definitely going to ask her about the B12 thing. That could easily be a solution, but its not going to solve her ongoing issues. She only became a vegan like 6 months ago, these issues have been going on for years now.

God almighty, man. I'm so sorry for you. You need to give her an ultimatum (and I usually think that's a bad idea) of couples & individual therapy- you may have to start with couples- or you find a divorce lawyer. This is seriously stunting your poor son, never mind yourself, nows the time to be a good father and intervene in a way that helps your son to live a normal life.

I am thinking about this, but I have mentioned therapy before and she accused me of gaslighting her and got even more sad. I am going to make a true, heartfelt request that we both go to therapy, I dont feel as if i need it for myself, but i know she will feel better if i act as if we both need it.
Update Jan 14, 2017 (2 months later)
Figured I would update this with all the craziness that has happened.
Wife had an absolute breakdown at both me and my son and she basically ran away and got WASTED at a bar, then came back and threatened to kill herself with pills. Called the police, they came and by the time they came she was just crying on the couch, and the cops left. Didn't really know what to do, my son was crying and everything.
I told her she has to go to a mental hospital or see a doctor as soon as possible, and she then got even more mad at me and then she went upstairs and just started screaming like an insane person.
She did end up going to the doctor, who diagnosed her with B12 deficiency at a severe level. JUST LIKE YOU GUYS SAID.
She has been taking pills, and I can't even describe what has changed in her. She went from an absolute downward spiral into madness and controlling everything to a just much more clearminded, calm person. She sometimes feels weird about admitting just how wrong she was about certain things, and she said she never realized how blind she was to how horrible she was treating the people around her. She said her anxiety over things would sometimes spike through the roof, and she over relied on blogs she read on the internet to help control her life. I am glad she has been able to admit these things.
I honestly feel like some of it wasn't entirely B12 deficiency though. Or at least she might be retracking a lot of the stuff she did and said which had nothing to do with the deficiency. Like her going Vegan was a symptom of the original problem (not like veganism is bad), that she was desperate to fit in with the young yuppie crowd. Im not sure if she is purposely blaming all of her old weird problems on B12 deficiency but that weird stuff started before she went vegan, so i think there was still some insecurity problems there.
I'm just glad she has spent the last 2 weeks realizing how problematic she has been. She said she was like in a trance, where she thought the entire world was against her, and the things she read on the internet confirmed that there was some global conspiracy (as she describes it) to make her be a dependent person or some shit like that.
Im just so glad she is back. So, so glad.

2024.04.24 21:22 JetmanX HELP NEEDED Neverending shingles without rash with paresthesia and herpetic neuralgia despite high dosage of Valacyclovir (36 years old) !

Hi,
I feel like I am a very rare case. I'm a 36 years old male for the context, living in France. And sorry in advance for my English, as it is not my mother tongue.
For the record, I had one shingles event like 4 or 5 years ago, rash on the thorax, below the breast. I had some pain around my upper back, which was neuralgia. Took Acyclovir (or Valacyclovir, can't remember) pills + cream and it went away quite easily.
Then, last September, I've had shingles with rash, behind my left shoulder, in the upper back, in a stressful moment of my life. I took Acyclovir immediately (pills + cream) and it went away quickly, and I suffered no pain whatsoever.
But a few months later... Last January, I had a burning sensation which I believe it called paresthesia (maybe not the right term?) under my left arm, no rash, nothing else. I had the feeling that my skin was burned, especially when touched, but I couldn't see anything.
I thought about a shingles without rash, but I didn't know, so I waited... It went away, and then came back. So I finally decided to take Acyclovir pills.
Then I don't remember exactly all the chronology, but I had phases of paresthesia disappearing, and then reappearing elsewhere, around my pelvis for example. Right, and then left.
And in the end, under my right arm.
I went to see an infectiologist, and he told me that it is very strange that it is moving like this around the body...
And the blood test (maybe 7 days after the last paresthesia ?) showed : Anti-VZV IgG antibodies : Positive, 2640 mUI/ml
The doctor said that the meaning was that my body was constantly fighting against the virus, but after talking to other doctors, it would just mean that I have had shingles at least once in my life, which is true.
IgM was not shown in the analysis, apparently it would mean that it was negative. Another doctor told me that the IgM value wouldn't even be relevant to prove I'm having shingles... is it true?
He prescribed me a 1-year treatment of 500mg Valacyclovir 1 pill per day.
Since that moment, I had nerve pain appearing in my right arm and that lasted for about 2 weeks.
Another doctor, also infectiologist, told me that it should be a postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and that I should stop the 1-year treatment (because he thought I was not having shingles anymore) and do a blood test 7 days after, to check the status about VZV.
Both doctors say that my immune system looks functional.
After this PHN in my right arm, I was feeling much better, no symptoms whatsoever. And, in my mind, I felt protected and relieved to have this 1-year treatment of Valacyclovir.. I didn't want to stop it (as you can see, both doctors have opposite advices !).
But 3 weeks after, I had hyperesthesia appearing again around the left of my hip !! Despite taking my 500mg Valacyclovir per day.
I was extremely worried and feeling litterally abandoned by the doctors... They wouldn't even reply to my emails.
So I decided, after having read posts on shingles, to raise the treatment from 500mg to 3000mg a day (1 pill every 8 hours) for 10 days, which is the recommended dosage for shingles.
4 days later, the symptoms disappeared.
But then 3 days later, headache appeared, and started every day around noon (morning was more or less fine).
From day 10 of 3000mg per day, I started progressively decreasing the dosage : one day at 2250mg, then one day at 1500mg (today).
And this afternoon, paresthesia suddenly came back, under my left arm this time (last time was on the left of my hip, but left arm already happened several times in the past) !!
And together with that, my headache seems to have disappeared ! (I'm lacking hindsight about this though)
As if shingles was trying to strike again but couldn't because of the 3000mg, and it did headache instead !
I really don't know what to do, I feel desperate... and I can't live all my life taking 3000mg a day, mainly because of the effects on the liver I suppose. And I also have to say that during these 10 days at 3000mg, I still had some brief and momentary neuralgia here and there (upper back left and right, left arm, right arm ...) as if the virus was trying to do something...
Brain and medullary MRIs are planned for May 27th and 29th (no earlier date available...) to try to know if I have some kind of other disease, but my intuition is that the answer is no...
What can I do ? I was already trying to manage my stress, already taking vitamin C, probiotics pills, zinc, L-Lysine everyday... And exercising...
And what about the vaccine ? I have read some people say it has to be avoided at all costs. And also, I don't know from what moment I can start taking it... Because if shingles never gives me a break, maybe it means I'll never be able to have it ?
I feel like I want to be followed closely by some serious high-end clinic or some kind of laboratory with researchers... I am so worried for my future. I know that the potential outcomes of shingles are absolutely frightening.

it’s my first time posting in this subreddit, I’m in communities on other platforms but I really need emotional and community support so I thought I’d post in a bigger group.
I’m from Chicago, but living in France and yesterday I had the worst medical experience I’ve had in a long time. For context, I’m 23f living outside of the states for 5 years with none of my medical records. Currently trying to get re-diagnosed in France for various reasons.
Yesterday I went to see my primary care physician. In France, to see a specialist and have it covered you need a referral, so I went to get one for a rheumatologist. After briefly speaking to my Dr, she proceeded asking weird questions about who first diagnosed me, where I first got prescriptions for other meds for other issues I have, etc. Right off the bat the interaction was strange. To make things worse, she’s hosting a medical student who was sitting in on the consultation.
After discouraging me from trying to see a new rheumatologist and telling me there’s no point in getting a diagnosis in France since there isn’t treatment for EDS, I changed the subject. I asked about going to a pain center so I can figure out a better treatment plan since currently I’m only doing exercises at home and taking tramadol when the pain or dislocations are so bad that I can’t walk anymore. She questioned why I would want that and once again said that I shouldn’t even try because the wait is up to 9 months for even one appointment and I would need to fight to prove my case and they only take people with ‘real’ pain… then she said she thinks I need to be seen by a psych.. I wasn’t really sure what she meant or why her attitude had suddenly shifted in such a condescending way so I continued to state that my pain is bad to the point where I’m unable to get out of bed some days and it’s affecting my life and school. She said, well you’re not even taking any treatment so why would you want to go to a pain center. I explained again that I do physio, take vitamins and I have emergency meds, in response to this she said ‘well if tramadol isn’t enough then why don’t we just start you on codeine?”. At this point I was shocked, I said back, “I’m 23, my pain will keep getting worse for the rest of my life and you want to start me on codeine for pain management? I don’t want to something so strong, I don’t want to get addicted.” To this she started questioning why I really wanted to be diagnosed. She asked if I was searching for financial gain. At this point I had started to cry a bit but I was still trying to hold it together. Keep in mind this is all in front of a student. I said I was just looking for help. She started speaking to me very condescendingly and said to me that she’d really like to hear from the rheumatologist since she didn’t get any news from him, and said to me that she hasn’t seen any evidence of EDS and needs to see imagery, my past medical records, etc. She said to me that I can be hypermobile without having eds and that in reality there’s no evidence showing anything. (I have done multiple X-rays and mri’s of my legs and wrists showing dysplasia, traumas from repeated dislocations, clear signs of issues in my ligaments and tissues as well as the results of two sets of major knee surgery on both sides). She told me straight to my face “I don’t think you have an issue with your body, I think your issue is psychic. You need to be followed by a psychologist.”
At this I started crying much more, I was really in shock by how she was speaking to me. I asked, “do you want me to pull my pants down and show you the scars from my surgeries? Do you want me to dislocate something in front of you here? I want to be re-diagnosed so that doctors stop talking to me like you’re talking to me now, so they don’t think I’m searching for drugs, so that when I go to the emergency room with a dislocation they don’t look at me like I’m crazy because I’ll have a diagnosis” and to this, she was smiling at me. Smiling as if she had proven I was crazy because I was sobbing…
I had no idea how to act, I was so stunned that this woman who I had trusted to be my primary care physician had suddenly spoken to me in such a way, I told her maybe she doesn’t understand what it’s like to be ill and have to fight for years to be diagnosed, and I didn’t know what her problem was but she should never speak to patients like that, then I left the office.
To make matters worse, this was all in my second language and I couldn’t express myself fully despite understanding clearly what she was saying. And to add to it, a medical student was sitting watching the whole thing unfold..
I don’t know how to act or react, I screamed at her that she was horrible as I left the office and had a panic attack as soon as I got out of the door. I’m all alone here in France and I felt so sad… I called my mom because she’s the only one who knows how much I’ve been through with this stupid disease but there’s not much she could do over the phone. I’ve dealt with doctors dismissing me, not believing me, thinking I’m just a druggie… but I’ve never had someone say to my face ‘you’re lying, you’re not sick, you need to see a psych’
I’ve been crying on and off and having bad anxiety attacks since it happened, I don’t know what to do or how to react. I really need support. I talked to my boyfriend about it and one of my friends but they don’t understand just how deep this hurt me. I really don’t know what to do, I’m so sad and so shocked and I just keep crying..

Hi everyone! I just tested positive for H. Pylori and I can’t help but feel relieved. I’ve been back and forth with doctor appointments for the past year trying to understand what is going on with me and my digestive system. Although this isn’t great news, I am happy to know what has been going on with my body as I’ve had extreme bloating, inflammation, constipation, etc for a year.
Some background on me: I was vegan for 9 years without pause and decided to break this life style for the first time last January as I booked a three week European trip. We arrived in Portugal, went to Barcelona, nice France, Florence, Rome, Venice, etc. we ate a lot of different foods and early on in my trip I was unable to digest food for 8 days straight. I have been struggling ever since. My doctors believed it was due to changing diets so I decided to turn back to a mostly plant based diet but have kept fish as it seems to not cause as much bloat and discomfort compared to chicken.
I am an extremely healthy person who starts her days with AV water * iodide niacin drops, warm lemon water, probiotics, D3+K2 vitamin, magnesium twice a day, etc. I fast from 8pm-1pm and eat a big salad with homemade dressing as my main meal with dates as a sweet treat after dinner. I do not intake any dairy, alcohol, don’t smoke, no caffeine, etc. I also on average walk 4 miles a day and do cardio/workout for an hour 5x a week. There is absolutely no reason why I should be feeling how I do after I eat salads. I have felt like I’ve dedicated my life to having a healthy gut so I have been very distressed as to why I bloat and feel inflamed after every single day when all I eat is SALAD.
I’m about to start my antibiotics here pretty soon but I have so many questions. What should I expect, will this hurt? Should I be near a bathroom?! Can I continue taking my probiotic every morning? I’ve read some horror stories d am wondering what has helped the antibiotic 2 week period go more smoothly. I Al so hopeful that after my gut is healed I will feel back in control of my health. Please share any tips you recommend for me!!

Tl;dr - hyaluronic acid and MSM
This post is for those who are unable to get on medication or maybe are looking for an extra boost that could help.
Disclaimer: of course I cannot know 100% if these supplements are the reason I'm feeling so much better or if I just spontaneously am healing (lol) but the data in my fitbit tracker, how I feel, and my partner's observations all point to significant improvement that correlate to when I started them.
I live in Germany where healthcare is not great and I'm not going to get into all the reasons why but medical services are much better in countries like Spain or France. Here the doctors are really into homeopathy (nazis invented it after all) and I live in a large city where the system is simply overloaded. The doctors here also give zero guidance and often have no bedside manners/empathy. As a result when I went to the cardiologist in January after thinking I was having a heart attack, I was diagnosed with high likelihood of pericarditis yet doctors refused to give me any medication and when I asked if I should take ibuprofen they said no (???!?!?!). I didn't show anything on the ultrasound (2 weeks later lol) which further cemented their belief I should have nothing even tho I was out of breath most of the day, had back pain and it would shoot up into my jaw when I walked. I took it upon myself to research as much as possible (did my own ibuprofen regimen for one month) and make my life as anti-inflammatory as possible because I couldn't get any help from the public system here unless I was literally dying. I should also add i got this as a complication from covid! I was very sick last December and had a horrendous cough but thought I was better until I carried heavy groceries up to my apartment then thought I was gonna die.
I won't explain all the things I did but I had changed my whole diet, life, habits, routine. I was already taking curcumin and green supplements to help boost anything possible. All healthy and blah blah. But I kept yo-yoing and when I would take a very normal chill walk my heart rate would skyrocket to 160-170bpm after 15mins. Sometimes the shooting jaw pains would return. I even showed the cardiologist my high bpm data when walking and she ordered more EKG tests but wouldn't give me any medication.
Out of desperation I started to look for new supplements and searched for ones that helped arthritis (because it's an inflammation response). And I found two supplements I hadn't seen suggested for pericarditis yet: hyaluronic acid (yes to be taken orally for those familiar with it through skincare) and MSM. Apparently these do wonders for joint inflammation, so I thought to myself why not heart inflammation?
I started taking 500mg of hyaluronic acid on an empty stomach each morning and later with my first meal 2-3g of MSM. I also added a supplement of just "heart healthy" vitamins called Cardio Protect but I was already eating healthy AF, taking normal vitamins, and I didn't take this as religiously.
Ever since starting these supplements 3 weeks ago my heart rate has stopped spiking when I do walks. I even hiked up a bunch of stairs in a long park outing last Saturday which I didn't think possible a few weeks ago. I am not yoyoing constantly between feeling good enough for mild activity (not exercise just like cleaning, walks, etc) and feeling destroyed, unable to take deep breaths, and overwhelming anxiety. I feel so so so much better and it's possible that I was going to heal anyway somehow but even my partner was constantly concerned for my progress being a rollercoaster that would just crash and burn sometimes and we thought I was on the road to recurrent pericarditis (maybe I still am idk). This is the ONLY change I've made and I've actually gotten worse in my healthy diet and habits as I feel better (such as clean eating, meditating, infrared red light therapy) but I continue to feel better each day.
If anything, it won't hurt you to take them!

Folate is needed for cells to replicate, which is one reason it is essential during pregnancy. However, cancerous tumors, which grow and divide rapidly, also thrive when folate is abundant. One of the first successful anti-cancer drugs was an anti-folate, which blocks cancer cell growth by reducing folate.[ref]
The delicate balance between promoting healthy cells and not fueling cancer growth is key to longevity and healthspan.
With this background in mind, I did a bit of digging in the research to see what studies show about high doses of methylfolate or high doses of folic acid.
In short, one theory among researchers is that folic acid and folate help prevent the DNA damage that can lead to cancerous mutations. Folate plays many roles in cellular health. But the flip side is that once a cancer mutation has taken hold, folate helps the cancer grow. Folate is essential for cell growth, and cancer cells use a lot of folate.[ref]
Let's take a look at some of the studies that raise questions about folate increasing cancer risk or growth:
A randomized, placebo-controlled trial evaluated the effect of 1 mg/day of folic acid in preventing colorectal cancer in a group of 987 adults. Participants were followed for 6 to 8 years, with colonoscopies performed to determine the prevalence of colorectal adenomas. While there was no increase in the risk of colorectal adenomas after the first three years, follow-up 3-5 years later showed that the folic acid group had an increased risk of recurrence of advanced adenomas with high malignant potential (67% increased relative risk).[ref]
In bladder cancer patients, a 5-year prospective study showed that both moderate and high folic acid intake significantly increased the risk of recurrence by 65-80%.[ref]
Of note here, both the bladder and colorectal cancer trials were in adults who were likely at a higher cancer risk.
Does adding other B vitamins change things? The overall increased risk of cancer was assessed in a long-term follow-up study of an osteoporosis prevention trial involving 2,524 adults who took folic acid (400 µg) and vitamin B12 (500 µg) compared with a placebo. The followup showed that those who were randomized to the folic acid/B12 group had a 13% increased relative risk of overall cancer and a 77% increased relative risk of colorectal cancer.[ref]
Is unmetabolized folic acid the problem, or is it the increase in active folate (methylfolate)? A study that looked at folic acid, unmetabolized folic acid, and methylfolate levels found that higher levels of methylfolate (5-methyltetrahydrofolate) were statistically associated with a 58% increased relative risk of advanced or multiple adenomas (benign tumors). The results showed that unmetabolized folic acid was not statistically associated with adenomas.[ref]
What about prenatal exposure? A large study of children born between 1997 and 2017 looked at the effects on children whose mothers had taken of high doses of folic acid while pregnant. The researchers defined high doses of folic acid as 1,000 mcg (most prenatal vitamins contain 800 mcg). The results showed an almost threefold increased risk of childhood cancer in children whose mothers had epilepsy and took 1 mg of folic acid. However, there was no increased risk of cancer in children whose mothers had epilepsy but didn't take folic acid. In the group of mothers without epilepsy who took 1 mg of folic acid, there was a smaller (~10%) increased risk of childhood cancer.[ref]
What about dietary folate? This study surprised me, and I'm still not sure what to make of it. A prospective study looked at dietary folate and skin cancer in middle-aged adults. The median follow-up time for the study was 12 years. The results showed that higher dietary folate intake and higher erythrocyte folate concentration were associated with an increased risk of skin cancer. The increase in relative risk was 79% for people in the top third of dietary folate intake compared to the bottom third. The study was conducted in France from 1994-2002, and there was no fortification of foods with folic acid there.[ref]
