2024.05.14 13:43 Heavy-State1115 Business newbie here looking for some business tips and wanting to hear your stories !

Hi guys, I'm 26, currently working as a civil engineer in Australia, and last year I started a business with a mate who is currently working as a commercial pilot. So, we've been working full time for around 2 years now, and quickly found out we wanted more freedom. Since we are both interested in entrepreneurship, we decided to "give this thing a go".
According to some YouTubers out there, the best way to start a business is to think about the problems you've solved in your past and make a business solving that problem for other people going through the same struggles. So, the idea we had was to help international graduates land full-time employment through our coaching program. I was an international student my whole life, and I also struggled to land a role (due to visa issues, lack of work experience, etc.), so I thought there were definitely people out there who needed help. After doing a bunch of research and looking at similar businesses that are already operating, we built a program similar, better, and cheaper. Since then, we've worked on it for a year now, until last month when we decided to quit.
So Here's why:
We've had around 10 students so far. And the results were great, we got good testimonials and we actually felt fulfilled helping these people out. One of our students couldn’t find employment even after 5 years from graduation and we helped him land his first engineering role. But despite all of these we found out two things.
  1. Most of our prospects couldn’t afford our service.
The people we were targeting mostly worked in restaurants, retail, petrol stations, and drove for Uber. I don’t want to sound rude, but we were trying to sell a costly product ($1500 for our program) to people at the lower end of the socioeconomic spectrum. We learned sales along the way. We reached out to hundreds, or even thousands, of people on LinkedIn. We offered them a free first lesson or tried webinars, and we had people attending those.
However, all the responses we received were, "I can’t afford it now." We really did blame ourselves for a long time, saying "we suck at sales." But to be absolutely honest, we accepted that these people could not afford it. We even offered installment payments (payment divided into 4). But thinking now, since a lot of them earn around $1000 per week, and with paying rent and other expenses, we found out that most of these people did not have the money to join. Many of the students who joined us were either married or living with their families, which helped them to afford our program.
  1. We weren't enjoying the business.
We learned an important lesson. That your personal purpose needs to align with your business's mission for you to work through all obstacles. We learned that a business is not easy, it requires a lot of thinking, problem-solving, and hustle. And we are fine with those, but the issue was that coaching international students to help them with employment wasn't the right vehicle for us. To be honest, we didn’t really care, and it seemed like we just wanted money. I think this was the biggest reason why we failed. We weren't getting clients, so we had to figure something out, but since we weren't enjoying the process, we burnt ourselves out, and it just became a chore we had to work on after our full-time job to finish off the day.
So Now:
We now want to start something new, something we are passionate about, something we enjoy even when we're eating shit. And we figured out that it was going to be something related to entrepreneurship. This guy on YouTube, "The Starter Story" Pat Walls, is our big inspiration. So we are thinking of starting a YouTube channel similar to his, sharing stories of different entrepreneurs out there.
But to be honest, we are so stuck. We don’t really know if we are going in the right path. Whether this is all a pipe dream? So I just want to know, or get some tips. How did you guys get started? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks !

2024.05.14 13:40 the_wonderful_thing I'm friends with a few famous people and parasocial fans make it very weird

I have a weird hobby that means I've met a wide range of people from different walks to life. I've got a few friends that are minor celebrities, not Hollywood or Broadway stars or anything, but recognised and famous faces in the mediums they work in. They've got interesting perspectives on life, and I think they like my company because I had genuinely no idea who they were before finding their socials, so our friendship is based solely on common life experience and time shared.
But whenever they post on social media and/or reference an in-joke for our friend group, it's weird to see thousands of people like it within the first 20 seconds and hundreds confidently playing along as if they're IN on the joke.
I feel crazy and possessive for actually getting jealous of how close these thousands of strangers THINK they are to my friends. I've always been lucky at bumping into or interacting casually with massive celebrities/politicians (Adam Sandler, Keanu Reeves, a Prime Minister or two, those types) and celebrity culture has always felt weird. I don't understand idolising and forming 1 sided relationships or opinions on with people who you LITERALLY don't know. I know modern media encourages it, but strangers are making me feel weird about my actual friends and I'm genuinely frustrated about it.
Hope everyones week's started well. Take care, sending love ❤️

2024.05.14 13:39 Big_Goal1319 Exam stress

Idk what's wrong with me but it's my last year and my exams are in 2 weeks and I've never been more stressed in my life. The second I wake up I feel sick even thinking about them. Any revision I do doesn't feel enough, even though I'm doing 9am till like 11pm. Does anyone have any advice?

2024.05.14 13:35 Extension_Bit4323 Why are some people so weird about driving manual?

I'm learning manual right now but have an automatic car and licence already but it's only so I can switch shifts at work I have no interest in it otherwise.
I find it annoying to have to keep switching gears everytime I'm speeding up or slowing down and even though people say it comes second nature I'd just rather let the car do it thousands of times when we're out. I'd only be going to 2nd gear at work cos we're only allowed to go 15mph.
But reading up on different posts on here and other sites and on this YouTube comments I was on yesterday people have this super weird thing. Like they say manual is better cos you get to feel the car and Be One with it and somehow it's fun changing gears all the time. Which is one the strange definitions of fun I've heard.
Like they're cheaper to buy and get parts for and may or may not be better on fuel and you can drive any other manual and auto too but that's all I'd say is why people prefer them. I think they are a bit antiquated and autos are the more advanced way to go plus they are made much better now.
But these some people have kinda like a fetish or weird obsession for it like saying autos are soulless which means to me that their soul and the manual cars soul are entwined and They Are One and they can feel each other and it's like 10 times more fun which I like to see them still say that after being stuck in stop and go traffic for an hour.

2024.05.14 13:34 emotibit Is it possible to modify the sampling rate of data streams on EmotiBit?

Is it possible to modify the sampling rate of data streams on EmotiBit?
Yes! EmotiBit firmware is open source, users can adapt the firmware, including the sampling rate, according to their requirements!
EmotiBit already provides a variant of the default firmware that samples PPG at 100Hz. You can find that variant on our release page. The steps to install custom firmware can be found in our documentation (see Installing custom firmware).
Do note that the sampling rates specified in the firmware variant should match the EmotiBit Oscilloscope settings. You will need to update the ofxOscilloscopeSettings.xml settings file accordingly.
This FAQ further provides some details on how users can adapt the code to alter the sampling rate. Changing the sampling rate of the device, at its core, deals with balancing sensor polling timing and memory constraints.
The EmotiBit Architecture
2 main processes are being run on EmotiBit: Data Collection and Data Sending.
The data collection process is responsible for polling sensors and updating the internal buffers. This process is attached to the ISR (Interrupt Service Routine) and is executed every (1/BASE_SAMPLING_FREQ) seconds. It is crucial to complete polling the sensors and writing internal buffers before another interrupt is generated. In the diagram below. Ts is the time period of the ISR. It defines how frequently the sensors are polled. Tdc represents the time required for completing the data collection process. If sensor polling is not completed within Ts (i.e. Tdc > Ts), it can lead to irregular time stamping and data loss. Tdc largely depends on communication time (time required to communicate with the sensor) and the amount of data being retrieved from the sensor. Every sensor cannot be polled in this short time period so polling offsets are used to query different sensors periodically over multiple ISRs.
EmotiBit data collection and data sending timing diagram
The data sending process is responsible for reading data from internal buffers and processing and sending it to the final destination, transmitted through WiFi and/or written to SD-Card. This process is executed when the processor is not busy with the higher-priority data collection process. One thing to note, is that SD-Card write operations can have irregular write timings because of various processes performed by the SD-Card. It is therefore important to have internal data buffers big enough to accommodate the variance in these write timings. The internal data buffers are also dependent on sensor sampling rates. Having smaller buffers can lead to data losses. Conversely, if the buffers are too large, it can lead to system instability if the MCU runs out of memory during runtime.
EmotiBit has a constellation of sensors and each sensor is initialized with the pre-defined settings (in code) during setup. You can refer to the PPG sensor settings for more details. You will need to update these settings when changing the sampling rates. Please refer to the individual sensor datasheets for more information.
Additional note: ESP32 does offer variable CPU clock speeds. Higher clock speeds can lower the processing times but does increase the power consumption affecting the battery life.

2024.05.14 13:34 Suitable_Annual5367 Ok, this sounds like an interesting test!

According to this clip you can check how much carbs your body needs by putting a saltine cracker in your mouth. The time it needs to go from salty to sweet it depends on the amount of amylase your body produces. - 0-14 sec -> more than 250g carbs - 15-30 sec -> from 100 to 250 carbs - more than 30 sec -> less than 100g carbs I'm honestly curious what the general result is for us with impaired pancreatic functions.
Edit: It personally took me 20 seconds to feel the sweet in my saliva. I average 160g carbs a day.

2024.05.14 13:34 mischavus618 Allergies!

I’m having a hard time understanding this. I feel real guilty.
We adopted a rescue 3 years ago. From day one he has junk in his ear. One ear. He came to us with prescription salmon based food. We were told he’s “highly” allergic to poultry. DO NOT FEED POULTRY! Understandable because our last one was also. Many bulldogs are. We struggled with her diet too. Finally the last 5 years of her life I cooked her salmon and sweet potatoes 6 days a week and pork once a week. She lived to 14.
Back to this one. The vet said we didn’t need prescription food and recommended Costco salmon. He would occasionally have a cyst on his paw, ear never cleared up despite rounds n rounds of meds, his eyes were junky in the mornings, one eye teared a lot. So we switch to lamb. No difference. We switch to beef. No difference. We tried alligator. No difference. We tried venison. No difference. Some had rice n some had sweet potatoes. Some had grain n some didn’t. We did these changes over a 2.5 year period. We finally just accepted that the symptoms were simply him. Apoquel worked but not great. Cydapoint had the same results.
A month ago out of the blue he started having blood in his stool. Vet said to cook chix n rice, tested for worms, gave him antibiotics and prebiotics. I flipped my lid! “He will die if he eats chicken!!!!” I’m a nut with the dog. Mess with the dog n we are going to have BIG problems. It took her 30 minutes to convince me to cook the dog chicken.
HE IS NOT ALLERGIC TO CHICKEN! Every symptom he has suffered from is gone! He has since transitioned onto Costco chicken n veg food and lost 3 pounds.
I’m very happy. Relieved. Still perplexed though. I suppose he was never allergic to chicken.
So I have many apologies to pass out here. Every time someone posted about their dog having allergies, I always said to avoid poultry at all costs. That wasn’t good advice.
Give all your dogs extra tummy rubs and enjoy every second with them!

2024.05.14 13:34 Old_Lynx_7983 Me (29M) and my cousin(28F) in love for 6 years now

Hello All,
So this has been our secret for nearly 6 years now. It started initially after we got drunk and got carried away. But it has been 6 years now and it isn't just lust anymore. We figured out that we love each other a lot but at the same time we do know that we cannot be together and don't want to even think in that direction.
We even tried to end things mutually but eventually we just couldn't live without talking to each other. We also dated other ppl during this time but it didn't work. Sex is just amazing with her, never had this experience with any other woman not even close. If we weren't cousins i would just marry her without any second thought.
We spoke to each other and came to a conclusion that we indeed can stay together through out this life but it has to be a secret taken to grave. Eventually we planned to get married to whoever we find compatible but parallely continue our relationship. I don't know what to do. I really don't want to think in the direction of what is right and what is wrong. Looking for some advice from ppl here , would be great to see ppl who are in similar situation because i don't have anyone to share this with.
Cousin I'm referring to is my first parallel cousin(dad's brother s daughter) and I'm from south india. In my culture particularly, cross cousins can get married but not parallel cousins.

2024.05.14 13:31 Zealousideal_Pass803 Radio 2

Most irritating listen!!!!
Why does the world want to endlessly condemn, humiliate and critise fat people...but when a drug comes along that can actually cure the fat people we are then shamed and looked down upon for taking it?
Why is it so difficult for the world to understand that of it was as simple or as easy as "eat less move more" or as the idiot on the radio said exchange your mindset" or "education" then there would be no fat people would there?!!
Why is it assumed fat people are just too stupid to understand how to be thin???
Honestly makes me absolutely furious.
I could write a flipping book...several books in fact all about how to lose weight and be healthy. I am extremely educated on the topic...because it's been my life's work!! Losing weight has been my main hobby, my main interest, and my only goal my entire life. And I'm still obese.
I am an intelligent woman, a mother, university educated, successful...so no I am not just too thick or lacking education.
Anyone else listen and just find the whole thing really upsetting. I've turned it off half way through as I just don't need to hear a middle aged white man who's never been overweight in his life tell me I need educating out of my "bad diet".
This is why I am on mounjaro...because until I am thin, the world has no respect for me. It's a very sad fact but never less, it is a fact that overweight people are second class citizens. We are less. Considered stupid, lazy, to be looked down upon. It shouldn't be that way but it IS.
And I will never tell anyone I'm on mj. I will just quietly become thin...and when I get there, I will remember who didn't have the time for me when I was fat.

2024.05.14 13:29 blackjadensmith typing this at 3:30 AM because my neighbor keeps waking me up

at this point i’m almost upset at my parents for raising me to be a considerate person because i feel like i’m naturally always thinking about my impact on my neighbors and the favor is not returned.
my roommate and i moved into a 2 bed apartment a few months ago. it’s a duplex so we only share one wall with another unit. i chose the bedroom that shares the wall with the other unit. i am massively regretting that choice.
a few days ago, our neighbor who i will call maria, starts blasting music at 12 AM. my bedroom wall is vibrating. i myself had just gotten back from a night out and wasn’t really trying to sleep that instant so it was fine. but then 1:30 AM came around. then 2:30 AM. i went over to their side of the building and knocked on the door to ask them to either shut it off or take it to their living room. they don’t answer the door. i knock about 5 more times. made a point to knock when i heard music pause or switch over so i knew they could hear me. never got her to answer.
i had no choice but to text our landlord. weirdly he responded instantly even though it was almost 3AM. he called and texted her. he also told me to call the police which i really didn’t appreciate. it says explicitly in our lease that you can’t make a bunch of noise after 10PM so he had plenty of power to do something himself. anyway, the music did stop a few moments later. but maria continued to talk at a daytime/outside talking volume with her friend. they also facetimed multiple people and shot the shit with them as if it were 4 PM and not 4 AM. absolutely ridiculous knowing that they have a living room they can call people in, that does not share any walls with our unit. literally the one place in their apartment where they need to be neighborly, they are choosing to be un-neighborly in. it’s so frustrating because taking calls in another room is naturally what i would do, knowing how thin the walls are. i wouldn’t have to be told to do that.
the next day, she starts playing music again around noon. same absurd volume as it was the prior night. she’s also going live on instagram with several people at a time, arguing, joking, freestyle rapping with them all while her shitty ass music is blasting. its a good time to mention she also considers herself a musician so she makes beats and “raps” and sings over her stuff. i know all of this because 1) she’s always talking so fucking loud and 2) our walls are so thin that i can make out every word she says.
this goes on for 6 hours. it’s the daytime so i can’t really complain to the landlord about it, but it’s insane to me that someone who just got a noise complaint would continue the same behavior not even 12 hours later. daytime or not.
i lost it and connected my own speaker to my laptop and start blasting a random playlist. i leave my apartment for 2 hours with the speaker still going. by the time i came back she had stopped with her music.
i thought she might have gotten a hint but i was wrong. she came home that night at 2AM and started facetiming random people and talking/laughing/squealing at normal daytime volume. again, she can do this in her living room but doesn’t for some reason. i turn on my brown noise and try to get back to sleep.
next day (this past afternoon). she’s doing her instagram live thing again but her music is significantly quieter. so i guess she understands after my turn blasting music that i’m super fucking annoyed. but she still talks to random people on speaker phone for hours. i let it go and work from my living room during the day.
and finally, tonight. she comes home at 2am and starts facetiming/talking to people on speakerphone, laughing, stomping etc. this is the THIRD night she’s generally kept me from falling asleep, and the second night she’s specifically woken me up out of my sleep with her talking. literally zero consideration for the fact that its the middle of the night when she’s on the phone, slamming her drawers closed, stomping, dropping shit on her floor.
i was raised to be conscientious of how my behavior is affecting others. maybe my mom was a bit overboard but she even trained us not to slam doors/cabinets/toilet lids. my roommate is the same. so my neighbor gets to have roommates that never make a sound while they slam shit and laugh and make terrible music into oblivion.
also lastly i want to note how this behavior has sprung up out of nowhere. she has never woken me up out of my sleep or played music this loud and for this long before, let alone for 3 days in a row. a week ago i heard her screaming in their bathroom about a man not treating her right. so to jump to a conclusion with the little context i have, she’s going through some personal shit and making my life miserable in the process.
i just need to get this out there because it’s 4:30 AM, i was sound asleep until she woke me up at 2 and talked on the phone until 3:30. i haven’t been able to get back to sleep and i’m angry as fuck about it.

2024.05.14 13:28 Smack-works The most "compact" Depeche Mode motifs?

What are the most "compact" Depeche Mode song segments?
A "compact" segment is a short segment (less than 10 seconds) which strongly emphasizes two contrasts. One after another, not simultaneously.
I'm talking about contrasts in pitch (highelower notes), note duration (shortelonger notes) and attack density (how many new notes are played per second).
Non-DM example: Eleanor Rigby (first 14 seconds). There's a ~7 seconds long motif. First ~5 seconds establish a contrast between long notes of different pitch. Next ~2 seconds are short notes, contrasting with the long ones & with each other.

Positive examples:

Precious, e.g. 0:09 - 0:19. There's a contrast in pitch (established in first 9 seconds of the track). Then there adds another contrast, in note density / loudness ("TUDUDUM").
Free, e.g. first 10 seconds. There's a contrast in pitch. Then there's a stronger contrast in pitch or a contrast in loudness.
Introspectre. There's at least three instruments (or three clusters of notes) which contrast with each other.

Negative examples:

Suffer Well, e.g. 0:12 - 0:27. Only contrast in pitch (highelower notes) is emphasized.
A Pain That I'm Used To, first 17 seconds. Only contrast in pitch (high/low) is emphasized.
John the Revelator, e.g. 0:05 - 0:20. Only contrast in pitch (high/low) is emphasized enough.

Hi, I’d like to use the first 33 seconds of Punisher in a YouTube video, and need to contact the owner. Is it K.Flay? Or a record label?
Anyone have any experience with requesting ethical use of copyrighted songs?

2024.05.14 13:25 Higoshi Jack of all trades, master of none

Heya! Runner here! I have a EVZero Prizm Ruby for running, which I like very much. And I want a second pair of sunglasses that I could use for driving and everyday use, but that also could double for running. Kind of a jack of all trades. I really want something with high contrast that make colors pop and give you a very good visual experience. I'm looking at the Holbrook Prizm 24k, Holbrook Prizm Tungsten or something with a Prizm Road lens like the Actuator (they don't put a Prizm Road in the Holbrook it seems). If you could only have 1 pair to do it all, driving, running and everyday life, which would be a good pick? I'm living in Europe with very mixed weather conditions.

2024.05.14 13:24 NonZeroSumJames Emergence Series: Universal Darwinism and Entropy's Counterpart.

Against a torrent of entropy, eddies of complexity arise. We have the non-zero-sum phenomenon of emergence to thank for our very existence. While I concede the problematic nature of the term "Emergence" as detailed by Eliezer Yudkowsky in The Futility of Emergence, this series makes a case for emergence not as an explanation, but as a description of a particular type of phenomenon, one that produces qualitatively distinct and more complex entities than those from which they emerged. This six part series explores:
  1. Conway's Game of Life—explore the concept of emergence with a simple simulation.
  2. Entropy vs Emergence—understanding the seemingly paradoxical nature of the second law of thermodynamics.
  3. Emergent Gravity—how can a universe arise from pure chaos?
  4. On the Shoulders of Substrates—how one phenomenon lays the foundation for the next.
  5. Replicators—the dangerous children of emergence; genes, memes, temes, snenes, grenes and of course quenes.
  6. Emergence is Beautiful—beauty and meaning in an entropic universe.
Please discuss, I'm particularly interested in criticisms by physicists and evolutionary biologists, as I am not trained and I would like to become less wrong.

2024.05.14 13:24 TuxedoCatBoi Watcher TV is hard to use

I’m ashamed to admit it but yes I did pay the discounted rate for the years worth of watcher, it took me a while to decide but I definitely thought the cons outweighed the pros of not paying for it (this was prior to their announcement that content would be posted on YouTube a month later)
The watcher streamer is not at all user friendly, visually it’s hard to find the new content, even the recommendation feed is limited to around 6-10 repeating videos.
Practically it’s worse, you have to double click on each video to start it which doesn’t sound bad in itself but being used to YouTube it is a big change. Secondly, videos don’t auto play when you click them. After double clicking into a video you’re met with a black screen, you actually have to press the small play button in the lower left hand corner to start the video. Again this sounds simple but as someone who often has connectivity issues and plays games while watching videos, I can’t count the number of times I’ve waited long enough for the videos to start that I forget I’ve even tried to play one.
I’m hoping that this is something they’ll fix when they release the streamer on its own app or that I’ll learn to deal with in time. I know it’s definitely not the biggest deal but I was wondering if anyone else also struggled with these features?

2024.05.14 13:24 airplaneride This is truly one of the worst places to learn about spirituality

Doom scrolling, a cesspool of ego based opinions, very little references to sources that validate opinions, mods, fear mongerers, "THE ARIES", etc... I advise you all to delete this app and go use YouTube to study topics. Whatever resonates with you. Go to your cave and be alone. Delete all outside opinions and come up with your own beliefs. We are all on our own unique journeys growing at our own pace. I delete this app often but when I come back it's mostly foolery, same questions asked over and over with the same type of responses. Half the posts in here can be handled if there were a FAQ resource. 2/10 responses are decent.
Anyways, go to your cave and study what is relevant to you. Go read real books, have real experiences in the real world to put your knowledge to the test. Gtfo your phone and go participate in real life. Nothing has inherent meaning, YOU decide what has meaning and what it means to you and how relevant it is for you. That includes the eclipses, the moon being in pisces, Saturn being in your backyard, Uranus being up your butt, the government doing this or that, whatever. You are the master of your reality. And remember, I'm just another irrelevant perspective.

2024.05.14 13:20 daswef2 [RATE ANNOUNCEMENT] Brazil Rate

Hello, welcome to the Brazilian Classics Rate! This rate covers five albums released between the years 1968 and 1974, exploring the likes of Tropicália, MPB, Samba, and more. We are excited to enjoy this music with both long time fans, and also welcome newcomers to experience these all-time favorites for the first time.
Note: I am not Brazilian and am not a Portuguese writer / speaker. My apologies if anything is lost in translation through this process.
Hold on: What’s a rate?
About once a month, this subreddit holds games called “rates” where a host selects a collection of songs and people score each song on a scale of 1-10 (with a single 11 & a 0 available as well). Ballots of these scores are submitted, and then over “reveal” weekend, the host takes the averages of the songs and eliminates them from worst to best, giving one song out of all the albums the top spot, the crown, & bragging rights forever.
Our sister subreddit popheads has a Guide to Rates Video that can give you a broad overview of rates (please note our reveal process is thread-based instead of video chatrooms). And here's recent examples of a rate announcement and a rate reveal.
BALLOT Due Date - June 21st, 2024
Reveal Weekend - June 28-30, 2024

Os Mutantes - Os Mutantes (1968)
Os Mutantes was made up of Rita Lee, and the brothers Arnaldo Baptista and Sérgio Dias. In 1968 Os Mutantes released their debut album, were featured on the Tropicália Ou Panis Et Circenses compilation, and performed as the backing band for Gilberto Gil's self-titled second album. The Tropicália movement embraced taking international ideas and re-interpreting them, combining them to create something Brazilian. Os Mutantes will likely be a favorite for those who love psychedelic rock.

Gal Costa - Gal Costa (1969)
Another featured artist from the Tropicália Ou Panis Et Circenses compilation, Gal Costa released her debut album in 1967, and her follow-up self titled album in 1969. Gal Costa was close friends with both Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso as well as their spouses, and Gal Costa's bossa nova debut Domingo was a close collaboration with Veloso. By the release of Gal Costa we hear more of the impact of Tropicália and psychedelia on her sound. This self titled album features more songs from writers besides Veloso, including songs written by Gilberto Gil, Rosil Cavalcanti, Tom Zé, Roberto Carlos, Erasmo Carlos, Jorge Ben, and Torquato Neto.

Clube Da Esquina - Clube Da Esquina (1972)
The Clube Da Esquina name (Corner Club) refers to a corner of the street where Lô Borges used to live, and Borges and Milton Nascimento played for fun in the 1960s.
“I hope our young people don’t allow themselves to be swept up in this dictatorship business, because they don’t understand what it was like,” said [Milton Nascimento] who was stalked by agents from the notorious department of political and social order as his career took off in the 1960s. “Whenever we were going to release a song we had to send it to them for them to censor.” Eventually, Nascimento’s manager rented an isolated beach house where the musicians were free to compose the record of their lives. “It was wonderful … just us and the waves rolling up to our front door,” said Borges. “We weren’t thinking about selling millions of records or being the next big summer hit. We just wanted to make art.” Nascimento smiled as he recalled how that legendary album was conceived half a century ago, far from the prying eyes of the dictatorship. “It was a record made just by friends … We’d spend all day composing, from the moment we awoke with the fishermen bringing in their nets to the moment we went to bed.”
The cover of the album features a picture of two boys playing in rural Rio de Janeiro by the photographer Carlos da Silva Assunção Filho (also known as Cafi).

Novos Baianos - Acabou Chorare (1972)
By popular demand, Novos Baianos has been added to the rate mix! As suggested by their name, Novos Baianos were founded in the state of Bahia in 1969. During the making of Acabou Chorare, they were mentored by the "Father of Bossa Nova", João Gilberto. The album's title (translated as No More Crying) also came from a story about Gilberto's daughter.
Note: the album has two versions of Preta Pretinha, track 2 which is the full version and track 10 which seems to have been a radio edit. We are only rating the full version of the song.
  1. Brasil Pandeiro
  2. Preta Pretinha
  3. Tinindo, Trincando
  4. Swing de Campo Grande
  5. Acabou Chorare

Jorge Ben Jor - A Tábua de Esmeralda (1974)
"I’m not in any movement, no. I think movements adopted me."
Jorge Ben Jor is the first recorded artist of the five here, but A Tábua De Esmeralda is chronologically our latest recorded album of the rate. This one is arguably a concept album; influenced by the Hermetic text "The Emerald Tablet" as well as Jorge's interest in alchemy, and features songs focused on Afro-Brazilian identity such as "Zumbi".

  2. O homem da gravata florida

Rules - PLEASE READ ALL OF THESE BEFORE SUBMITTING YOUR SCORES
Listen to each song and assign each a score between 1 and 10. Decimals are fine, but please refrain from giving decimal scores with more than 1 spot. This is because I'm using a computer program to parse the votes and print everything out (more on that later).
You have to listen to and score every song in the main rate. Otherwise, I will not accept your ballot as it will crash the program (more on that later).
Your scores should NOT be considered confidential as they aren’t. Feel free to shitpost about them in the general discussion threads whenever you feel like it - users over at popheads usually just talk about their averages of the albums and what 11 and 0 they gave (which I will explain on the next bullet point!)
You may give ONE song a 0 and ONE song an 11 in the main rate. Please reserve these for your least favorite and most favorite tracks; excessive sabotage ruins rate results and generally makes things less fun.
You can change your scores at any time! Feel free to PM me at any point after submission before the deadline and I'll be happy to revise them for you.
I am using a computer program that fellow rater letsallpoo designed in order to parse these votes! While this will make things a lot more efficient and reduces errors on my part, this does mean that scores need to be sent in a very specific way. The easiest way to make sure your scores follow the necessary format is to use the pre-prepared link at the top & bottom of this post. PLEASE USE THAT. You can copy and paste it to a notepad file or something and fill in your scores there, but PLEASE use that format to send in your scores.
DO NOT SABOTAGE the rate by giving outrageously low/high scores for the sole purpose of skewing the results, we reserve the right to exclude any ballot we suspect of this. If you're worried your scores could be mistakenly perceived as such, all you need to do is leave comments explaining the reasoning behind them.
Did a lot of copy and pasting here (including the following list of users), so thank you to all the raters of old: vapourlomo; roseisonlineagain; DolphLundgrensArms; R_E_S_I_G_N_E_D; stansymash; ClocktowerMaria; aerocom; themilkeyedmender; greencaptain; Crankeedoo; dirdbub; ThatParanoidPenguin; tedcruzcontrol; kappyko; FuckUpSomeCommasYeah; LazyDayLullaby; SRTViper; Whatsanillinois; NFLFreak98; freav; freeofblasphemy; kvothetyron, RatesNorman; aPenumbra; idontreallycare4; p-u-n-k_girl; luigijon3; WaneLietoc; dream_fighter2018; darjeelingdarkroast; smuckles; PiperIBarelyKnowHer; welcome2thejam; imrlynotonreddit; kvothetyrion; thedoctordances1940; b_o_g_o (of the BogoLomo Rate Collective); MCK_OH; TiltControls; u/chug-a-lug-donna; u/TakeOnMeByA-ha; u/indie_fan_; u/bilbodabag, zenits, saison_Marguerite, and tons of people on popheads.

2024.05.14 13:20 Just-Curious-Reddit Ongoing weight loss nightmare

I don't know if this is the right place to write my story but here you go... (BTW, English is my second language so please don't come at me)
I am struggling a lot!!!
I had a hard childhood coming from a poor family, having literally only bread, sugar and potatoes to eat. My parents were borrowing money to even buy those. My mom had eating problems and always told me to be careful what and how much I eat because I will end up like her. I was only 8 years old. I started weighing myself every day and became horrified when I would gain a kg even though I was growing up and looking normal, healthy. I started dieting and I always thought of myself as being fat. I am 43 now and I can say that every single day of my life I though about losing weight and wanting to be thinner, etc.... Until 2020 I kept my weight under control (even though I didn't think so at that moment) but covid came, then I lost my mother which completely ripped me appart. I let myself go.... So much, I gained 40 kg in 2-3 years and now I am struggling so bad.... I've been diagnosed with binge eating disorder and went 2 years to therapy (specialised clinic) but it didn't help. I went to a psychologist who diagnosed me with ADHD (I tried medication but the secondary effects were too much for me) and said he tried all the tricks on me and unfortunately he can't help me anymore. I have a personal trainer, I have a professional binge eating disorder coach, I have a dietician. All this costs me a lot! More than I can afford but I hoped it would help. Unfortunately nothing works. I can't stop thinking there is something wrong with me, there is something wrong with my brain.... I listened (can't read with ADHD, 0 patience) to all the help books available, tried diets in the past, tried to stop restricting like I've been adviced but I can't stop myself from eating. I don't know what to do anymore. I am desperate especially because my health is decreasing considerably... Just been diagnosed with prediabetes, apnea, depression and so much more... Any suggestions except surgery or ozempic?
