2023.12.19 22:05 Koto65 What is everyone's favorite beast-like flying monster?

Hopefully this gains traction. I need a flying monster to send at my party to test a few new mechanics and shenanigans. It will be easy to fit in any monster as long as it is beasty in nature. Think arrowhawk or cloaker. If it looks like an animal and has wings it is acceptable.

Jeffrey Silverstein - Western Sky Music (Arrowhawk)
It's been a while since there's been some proper twang on the blog, so just in time Jeffrey Silverstein & his crack collaborators pop up via Arrowhawk with a new LP of good natured, cosmic country & microdosed Americana to balance The Slow Music Movement chakras & celebrate the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. It sounds like a beautiful place, road trip anyone?

2021.06.10 02:30 jakp99 Know when to run away

So recently my dm has been saying our party is something to write home about so I feel like I should start writing down some of the highlights of the campaign.
We are playing in a homebrew setting in 3.5e. Here is our line up of characters, a slime child blue mage/duskblade, a half dragon? slayeswashbuckler, a half fey bard/demonic seductress, a human sorceremonk, an elf cleric/war priest, and me a drow spider rideonmyoji. We were all allowed to gestalt earlier in the campaign after the dm went over gesalting rules again.
It started on our way to the north to recruit a group called the yuki for a war against the queen of the knights. We had two npc’s with us but they don’t really play a role in the story. While we are traveling we come across a thorn of judgement knocked over and hollowed out, these thorns are giant obelisk remaining from an old war. Scouting it out with an arrowhawk it comes across a giant man sitting on the air that scares my poor spirit half to death from a look alone. we are invited in by this creature and I’m told to roll a knowledge the planes. I am then told because of my high roll that this guy is a hundun. Now let me tell you that the second I saw the refrence picture I instantly wanted to run. But after learning that they would be abit less than calm otherwise and being invited in by the thing I decided to go along with it. The rest of the party agreed and we were greeted by the demon warmly.
The hundun offered us a wager, make our way through a gauntlet of three floors and win some prizes, get past floor three and you win all of them. Now this offer sounds way too good to be true surely it shouldn’t be that easy. But our party has a few powerhouses so we take it on, of course we were welcome to leave at anytime during the challenge.
Our first challenge wasn’t too bad, don menki (monkei) was not exactly anything to write home about. He had damage resistance and was anti burst which is kinda our parties specialty but he didn’t output a scary amount of damage himself either. A few turns later and he’s down, his legs throughly gone courtesy of the blue mages new cannon arm. Now I had helped the dm with item descriptions so I didn’t take part in choosing the rewards for the levels in fear of accidental meta gaming. for the first floor we got a diamond, a crown with opal inlays and a scimitar that was shining.
The cleric had decided to show that he was smart, which is fair when you hear that you are against someone called “the goddess who invites unfortunate slips of the tongue”. as he had rightly assumed, if our opponents are summoned here then he can banish them. So a failed save and a whine of disappointment from her later we get a cloak, an amulet and a bag of 10000 gold.
Now before I tell you what happened next I will point out once again that we are level 11 at this point. I’m sure some people can look into our classes and see how strong they are but one thing is for certain. If you are allowed to leave you should probably leave while you are ahead. Now I will be fair to all of us and say we assumed we could run after we saw our opponent, unfortunately we are betting against a demon.
On the next floor we find none other than our host of the evening hundun, and after hearing just how powerful he is from a check alone he decides that he is going to be our last opponent. Que me singing we gonna die.
So blinded by greed or just plain ignorance as the door behinds us closes my character is knocked out by a staff (spell not hit). The slayer decides to take the first stab very literally as she proceeds to bluff him into a sneak attack empowered by her dragons breath for a healthy chunk of his hp. While I focus on keeping myself safe asking my spider to get me out of range of the staff the sorcerer and cleric manage to over come his spell resistance and hit him with 2 Rays of enfebelment and energy drain respectively with the cleric summoning an elder earth elemental as a bonus action through something called battle companion. The earth elemental gets two good slams in before it’s the bards turn. It is here that I say that I am glad our bard is psionic as she absolutely decimates the remaining health of the hundun with a fire spell and then some ending the encounter and the session pretty much with a bang.
Our temp dm would later say that we should be proud that we basically one turned the hundun. But when you look at that CR 21 monster it’s less that I am proud and moreso glad and thankful. If the hundun had gotten its turn someone or more likely everyone would have died. But that’s how a gambit is and to the victor goes the spoils. The remaining rewards we left in the other rooms (we could only pick one side before) aswell as a +9 adamantine breast plate of heavy fortification. All in all another fun session but an important reminder to know when to fold and walk away.
Now I do wanna clarify cause I don’t want this to come off the wrong way. We were given an out and warned that he is a demon of chaos and entropy, it is moreso on us for not even thinking of leaving when it was kinda obvious who the last opponent might be. some may think that was abit over powered for us (as a peak for those who don’t know or don’t wanna look it up 8 attacks with fist that are basically have innate energy drain) but it’s not a dm’s job to hold our hands, also we got a level 20 loot out of it for actually winning.
I might share more stories depending on how well this is recieved. For now though thanks for reading.

2020.04.21 18:49 Bitzenstein Good Encounters/Structure for Airship Travel?

Hi team!
My crew of 6 level 6’s will be taking an airship they salvaged from Zantashk to Stormreach soon, and will be using the airship for the foreseeable future.
I want them to be able to customize it, build new rooms and laboratories below deck, and hire new crew members! (They already have a chef and an engineeartificer!)
But I also want day to day traveling they do be fun, exciting, and put the airship at risk! Some ideas I’ve had are:
House Lyrandar (a minor villain in my story) rivals attempting to commandeer the ship back to their “rightful owners”.
Lamannia Manifest Zones spewing Arrowhawks at them.
Having them need to park the airship and keep watch over it at night (the elemental ring is a beacon for flying monsters)
All Hands On Decks moments like sudden storms or elemental glitches in their engine that forces everyone into action at once, not just the Swashbuckler who usually steers the ship.
Rogue air elementals attempting to free their trapped fiery kin that fuels the ship.
And even stuff like flying merchants and traveling ships they can approach. Maybe a grumpy old gnome who’s put enchanted air balloons all over his house and flown down from Zilargo?
How do you/your DMs keep air travel fresh and exciting in your games?

2020.03.06 22:07 MagicMisterLemon Animals in Destiny ( 10 will shock you )

After many long evenings spent procrastinating, I have finally finished a mostly complete list of animals in the kingdom animalia ( effectively eliminating all chances that I will acknowledge the existence of certain Nessus Frogs. Wait )
Anything outside of the kingdom is branded an alien ( Awoken, Exo and Jovians are all to be considered as being of the genus homo. No homo ) and will thus not be mentioned or acknowledged ( save for that Nessus frog. And also some Eliskni that act as sources )
( If a species is confirmed alive, it isn't bold to assume that its predatoprey also persisted. Say, the Eurasian Eagle Owl seen in the Farm would imply the presence of prey animals, such as voles, rats, tits ( ha ), fish, lizards, etc... )
So without further ado:

Seen In-Game

Grey Wolf - seen in-game, Iron Temple, The Farm
European Hare - seen in-game, EDZ
Peregrine Falcon - seen in-game, The Tower, The Farm, Louis
Chicken - seen in-game, The Tower, The Farm, the Colonel
Human - seen in-game, The Tower, The Farm, the Reef, the bathroom mirror
Deer - remains seen in-game, The EDZ, The Stag Exotic Helmet, confirmed food for the Wolves of the Iron Temple
Cat - seen in-game, The Tower, Widow's Court ( wtf )
Pigeon - seen in-game, The Tower
Crow - seen in-game, EDZ, Rusted Lands
Firefly - seen in-game, EDZ ( boo. Are you shocked? )
Dragonfly - seen in-game, EDZ, Widow's Court
Stray Dog - seen in-game, EDZ ( two animals can run across the road when you approach, the European Heir or a Dog ), collar of the late Luna on the Moon
Bats - seen in-game, EDZ, Widow's Court
Butterfly - seen in-game, EDZ, Tower
Eurasian Eagle-Owl - seen in-game, The Farm
Sheep - remains seen in-game, The Ram Exotic Helmet

I don't want to see any "But the Dragonfly Regalia set says that dragonflys are extinct", because you can actually see them fly around the lake at Widow's Court and every piece of lore has an unreliable narrator

2020.03.06 17:36 MagicMisterLemon A ( mostly ) complete list of all animals ( of the kingdom animalia ) seen or mentioned in Destiny ( number 10 will shock you )

During the Han dynasty, people often wore jade pendants that were in the shape of turtles. Because of the ancient Chinese influence on Japan, honorific titles and badges in Japan also often referred to the turtle or tortoise.

2019.01.25 19:47 joesteinhardt Introducing Label Buds - Top Shelf, Exploding In Sound, Don Giovanni, Father/Daughter, Tiny Engines, Fire Talk, Broken Circles, Arrowhawk

Me and a bunch of my label buds started a group called...label buds. The goal is to try to take things back into our own hands that we used to have the control and ability to do ourselves when started our labels but is now controlled by bro-run tech companies that want to control our corner of the music industry (and your corner if you're on indieheads).

We're still figuring out some things, but our first step is this playlist. I would of course prefer that you do not stream your music through a publicly traded tech company, but if you must, please follow this playlist on either apple or spotify so that we can all reach you directly rather than being filtered by spotifys so-called "algorithms" which are actually just humans lobbied by major labels and their interests (which is why no matter what type of music you listen to you are being suggested certain things like Drake, that shit is not algorithmic).
