2024.05.14 03:09 Idontwanttousethis Did anyone else in melbourne call the mario fire flower this? Or is my faily just weird?

So last night my partner and I sat down to play Super Mario 3D world together, we only just got a switch so other then occasionally Mario Kart this was the first Mario game i'd played in years, and as collecting powerups I told my partner to go get the fire flower, or as I've always called it "Plockers"
They had no idea what I was saying and after some googling I found out that apparently nobody else calls it Plockers??? I'm thinking maybe this is a regional thing? Does anyone else ever remember calling it this?

2024.05.14 02:59 Frequent-Movie8220 Can someone please grade my synthesis essay

This was about the 2021 Free-Response Questions Handwriting prompt. Just looking for # values of my thesis, evidence, and sophistication.
Although some argue that handwriting instruction is beneficial in helping students develop certain skills, to a greater extent, handwriting instruction is not needed in today’s schools because the aforementioned skills aren’t directly proportional to handwriting and the world is evolving into a society that lacks the need for such writing skills.
Handwriting instruction has no place in this globally changing society that is geared more and more towards technology. Technology has no doubt pervaded into our school systems on a global level. Kids in elementary schools are receiving chromebooks, ipads, and even laptops. This is even the case for my own situation, in which I was given a chromebook for assignments in fifth grade. However, schools have continued to implement handwriting practice into daily routines, and for what reason? The opinions are starting to sway against teaching handwriting skills, however. Teachers themselves are stating that they believe we need to do away with the practice and “move on”(Source A). It is not only an individual basis level, however, as even forty one states have implemented courses that omit cursive from their curriculum as a whole(Source A). The fact that not only individuals are rebelling against this “archaic [...] communication” but also a majority of states on a national level are doing so highlights how change is what the nation wants. Specifically, technology is making the teachings of handwriting obsolete. The keyboard allows students to be “quicker on the keyboard” and can help them be “better writers as handwriting takes up less of their education”(Source C). Others agree with this sentiment that doing away with handwriting can give more time for education in other subjects too. For example, some articles are saying that handwriting is taking away time that could be better prioritized for “essential life-skills” like finance and programming(Source E). The sentiment of teachers, editors, states, and more, is that handwriting has no place in a society that is evolving.
The supposed skills that come with teaching handwriting at our schools are lacking in direct benefits. For example, some argue that handwriting activates cognitive and fine motor skills because it requires knowing what to write and how to use motion to write as such(Source D). However, this assertion could be applied to any scenario. Say painting: it requires a vision of what to make and the skills to create the work. However, why is painting not a required curriculum in many schools? This basic line of reasoning has been pointed out by others too, with one pointing out how “playing the original Super Mario Bros helps develop fine motor skills”(Source E). Knowing where to jump or which pipe to take is the equivalent to using your cognitive skills while inputting such decisions into your controller is using motor skills. However, schools are not requiring 15 minutes a day to gaming. This comparison between handwriting and Super Mario Bros underscores how the perceived benefits of handwriting are, in reality, not inherently needed. Another point of view to highlight is that while handwriting instruction may have benefits, they are highly constrained to when one is in school. In Source F, for example, it is shown that the use of paper over technology is heavily prevalent but in K-5. In Source D, it is said that elementary-age students were found to write more during their time. However, these assertions do not take into account the realities of our society. Children are not in the growing technology-focused workforce. Children will not have the time to take such liberties when having to take quick notes in high school or college. Children will be losing out on time that could be used to develop other more important skills.
Overall, the practice of handwriting instruction is not needed in today’s schools because the overall consensus agrees with such and the supposed benefits of handwriting do not outweigh the loss.

2024.05.14 01:53 N4riN4ri How to compile Super Mario 64 for Miyoo Mini/+?

I'm in the quest to finish filling out the entire OnionOS Port Collection, but I'm not able to get sm64.us.f3dex2e. In fact, I tried to compile it from this repo:
https://github.com/FunKey-Project/sm64-port/tree/561dd7c8d3cec30e856fb9bdd803f32541ca7f33
Which, from some sleuthing I found you were supposed to use, but then it wouldn't compile because of some errors. On MSYS2, it was something about SDL2.o, and on Docker, it was about not being able to find SDL2.h among other things.
It's frustrating and I'm in my wits end! I tried compiling the original fork from gameblabla, I tried to compile the original sm64 dos port only to find out that gameblabla made significant changes between his fork and the dos fork and that the dos fork compiles as an exe. I don't know what to do 😭😭😭
thanks <3

2024.05.14 01:26 George-Ing Final haul from a Japan Trip

Final haul from a Japan Trip
Final cost: ~500 USD inc. complete VB with tap.
Last week I posted a couple of titbits about my in-progress trip to Japan. Since then, a few people have reached out to ask about 2024 VB game stock levels, prices, etc, and now I’m back I thought I’d write a proper post.
I’m sure a lot of this is known information but if it helps one person then well, that’s OK!
So firstly - this wasn’t a retro games trip for me. I visited with friends to sightsee first-and-foremost; but I’ve wanted a Virtual Boy for years, so I’d planned to use any downtime I could find to go on a hunt for any gems.
Given my trip, this meant most of my time was spent around population centres - namely Tokyo (yikes!), Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Nagoya. A problem I’d imagine a lot of people will face!
Despite the obvious challenges, during my ten days in Japan, I managed to pick up 10 brand new boxed games and a boxed Virtual Boy for around $500 total. While this might not be the heyday of Japan VB finds, I was pleased to find there were some pretty decent deals out there.
So. Here’s what I experienced as a first-timer:
  • To state the obvious, Akihabara (in-general) and Super Potato (Nagoya + Akihabara) weren’t great. There were some cute stores, but for the most part any VB games and consoles were consistently at eBay levels and higher. At Super Potato, vanilla Mario Tennis was over 4 times (!) what I paid for it brand new two days earlier (yikes!).
  • Nakano Broadway was often recommended before my trip, and was 100% on my list to hit up. Some reasonably priced stores, but I came back empty handed. Save for a $250 kinda-beat copy of Warioland, I didn’t manage to spot any Virtual Boy titles. This may just be poor timing, so I’d love to know what others find!
  • Nagoya’s Akamon Arcade I found surprisingly good, with a small selection of reasonably priced Virtual Boy games spread between its handful of retro game stores. A nice new copy of Teleroboxer for $30 was welcome. A recommendation if you make it out to the Ghibli Park.
  • More generally, Suragaya was the absolute godsend of the trip. I managed to pick up at least one brand new Virtual Boy game at every Surugaya I visited, and the VB itself. I would note a few things about Surugaya:
  • Their online stock helper typically only showed a small portion of what was in stock at a particular store, so I found visiting was worthwhile regardless.
  • However, when they did show something as in stock in a particular store, it typically was accurate, though prices rarely matched what was online (I saw both higher and lower in store - a VB priced at 56,000 online was 79,000 in store! Eeep!)
  • I picked up a couple of games in smaller independent stores in Nagoya, only to find them later in Surugaya at lower prices. I liked the balance between convenience (they’re often near population centres) and reasonable price at Surugaya.
  • Finally, as of writing, Surugaya Shinjuku has Golf, Baseball, V-Tetris, Mario Clash, and Bomberman in stock.
  • For rarer games in 2024; I had less luck in both Surugaya and in general. I found a couple of copies of Jack Bros, Warioland etc at independent stores - but all at prices not far off what you’d pay online. I’d be fairly confident that there are deals out there; but less so where I was visiting!
  • Picking up a console itself was easily the biggest challenge of the trip. For the most part stores seemed to be out of stock or marking them up in the 80-100,000 yen range. In fact, I only encountered four in stock during my entire trip. I fortunately got lucky with a four-hour detour out to Surugaya Honjo once my friends had left (final price 41,000 boxed!). So decent deals do still exist, but it might not be easy!
That’s my brain dump of what I saw during my trip while it’s still fresh. I hope it helps. If anyone’s planning a trip and has questions about stock levels in specific stores etc, I’m happy to hang around in the comments!

2024.05.14 01:11 Maeno-san ITAW for this specific camera angle used in some 2D video games

I'm looking for a word to describe a certain camera angle in 2D video games. The camera angle is fixed and its angled somewhere between a full side view (e.g. Super Mario) and top down (e.g. 2D Legend of Zelda).
I think isometric games (like Final Fantasy Tactics, etc) would be a subset of what I'm looking for, so I'm hoping there's a word that includes more than just isometric views.
Examples of games that use this perspective would be "The Wild at Heart" and "Unsighted"

I’m looking to create a close group of 4 to play fun games with frequently! I’ve always wanted to make a Co-op Let’s Play channel so I figured this would be a good opportunity.
I can set up gaming sessions on Dolphin Emulator so everyone can play locally :)
I’d prefer it if you are within a few years of age as me and it would be optimal to be in a similar time zone. If you are interested, please reply to this post or DM me on discord: “munsonclues”. Thank you!

2024.05.14 00:24 AnyCatch4796 10 things that made up my childhood.

I was born on Feb. 24th 1996 and thought I would share a list of 10 things which I feel made up some of my childhood (everything I refer to will be cultural, not entirely personal). I’d love to hear how many people also experienced these things regardless of your age. Also feel free to share defining moments of your childhood!
  1. Beanie babies. Although the “craze” occurred in my earliest years of life, beanie babies made up an important part of my childhood. We had at least 150+ that my mom began collecting around 1994 (I have older sisters born in 1990 and 1993). We continued getting new beanie babies throughout the early 2000s. I distinctly remember going to toys r us in 1999 for beanie babies and having to wait hours in a line- it was miserable, I was three. My mom never got sucked into a craze like that again lol.
  2. Gameboy Advance SP which I got for Christmas ‘03. I played Zelda, Mario and Kirby. Then, Nintendo DS- Nintendogs and Super Mario Bros 64 were my favorite games.
  3. Barbie’s. I even got the OG pregnant Barbie with the magnetic belly in 2003 before it was pulled from shelfs, and it was my favorite Barbie of all. I specifically recall getting it from toys r us and being so excited! I would spend hours playing with them, making up elaborate stories and situations for them.
  4. The Sims 1-4. The Sims 1, along with Freddie Fish and Spy Fox, was one of my first computer games. I played it before I could read well, so 5 and 6. I gave every single one of my Sims’s the same name because it was the only one I knew how to spell other than my own (it was Anna for guys and gals lol).
  5. Cable TV. Here’s one I’m sure I’ll share with everyone born before like ‘07. Nickelodeon, Disney, Cartoon Network, ABC and Animal Planet primarily from 1998-2007, so whatever shows aired during that time I watched (even those that weren’t targeted for my age due to having older sisters). In middle and high school (2007-2014) I mostly watched Fox (not news), ABC, reality shows, discovery Channel, Animal Planet, MTV, Comedy Central and Adult Swim. Around 2012 or 2013 I mostly used streaming. My favorite show in high school was Skins and I modeled my life after Effy- I turned out okay though I swear. Adding to this section, VHS, DVDs and Blockbuster were also a huge part of my childhood. We walked to blockbuster frequently as a family until I was 11 or so.
  6. Tamagotchis. These guys had a huge resurgence in the mid-00s. I brought mine everywhere with me and most pics of me from 04-06 include at least two tamagotchis somewhere lol.
  7. Home phones and Feature phones. Got my first flip phone for my 12th bday, got a slide both ways phone when I was 14, a knock off blackberry when I was 15, and my first iPhone at 17 in summer-2013 before my senior year. All of my phones before my iPhone were pay as you go phones so I pretty much only talked on my house phone until I was a senior in HS. My sisters and I got our own landline in 2005 and it was a fight everyday. I’d talk to my best friends for HOURS almost everyday, and usually one of my sisters would be listening in on the other phone 🙄
  8. iPods. I first pirated music from Limewire, then from YouTube to MP3. Starting with the second gen IPod Nano in 2006 (prior to this I only used CDs) and ending with the iPod touch 4th gen in 2010 which i used until I got my first iPhone. I probably spent months of my life pirating music from 2006-2013.
  9. Robot animals. Furby. Shelby. Poo-Chis. RoboBaby. Fur Real Friends. I LOVED every robot animal and they were a huge trend for kids in the late 90s-mid 00s. I 100% believe games such as nintendogs ended this trend.
  10. Flashlight hide and seek, kickball, capture the flag with neighbors. It seemed like every neighborhood had a group of kids that would meet up regularly to play these games in large groups throughout the 2000s. I have no idea when this disappeared, but i continued this until 09, then I outgrew it. After ‘09 I barely ever saw kids playing in the field we used. It’s like it just died with the 2000s.
I could obviously go on but I’ll leave it there!
