2024.05.14 19:45 CharlieG31Michigan - Car dealership won't share signed papers for car sale because title is in transit
Hi everyone! Last week we bought a car at a dealership in Michigan. After we had signed most of the paperwork they shared that they actually didnt have the title, the title was held by Ally Bank and that it was "in transit". After some thinking we also decided to cancel the extended warranty we had gotten with the agency. Yesterday we went to check on the status of things since they've been ghosting us for the week. The agency told us it might be 2-3 weeks until they get the title and they refused to cancel the warranty/modify it until the title arrives. They also werent willing to share any papers we signed (proof of sale, the warranty etc) claiming they cant share anything until the title arrives. (The Auto loan has already been approved and it now shows up in my bank portal). Can we force them to share paperwork? I am just concerned that at this point I have nothing to proof the purchase/warranty terms + no title.

Hello community, I have been struggling to build the Windows 11 image on VMware, some help would be greatly appreciated. I was able to configure HCL/Packer when it comes to VMware configuration (mostly I hope). At the moment, Windows 11 gets provisioned until the moment that system boots with the Windows OS screen, and then it hangs, I believe that WinRM is not properly started via the XML answer file. I can confirm that answer file works because Windows settings for the setup are processed and Windows installation finishes. Also, I could not use the floppy drive, since its not supported with UEFI and TPM, so I am mapping the VMware tools from the datastore, and will include in the answer file the part to install the tools - my doubt is, is the WinRM even started if the Packer can't connect with the IP? I am having trouble to understand how to troubleshoot the answer file, its really cumbersome. My packer console says waiting for the IP. Any suggestions are very welcome, thanksss! Here's my packer configuration file:

2024.05.13 18:17 EggsBasketed[Long Post] A media analysis from the perspective of a hypothetical fan in 1997 on "Who exactly is the real love interest here?"
Let's go on a journey together. It's 1997. Final Fantasy VII is about to release, and you don't know a thing about it except you saw this picture in some magazine and thought "Wow, what a cutie! I hope she's the love interest!". On this journey, we are going to track how good you feel about that statement as you play through Final Fantasy VII. You're a person with pretty good media instincts, you've got your memory card clean and ready for a new save, and you slot in Disk 1 of 3 to begin your adventure as Pink Girl #1 Fan. TL;DR: It's Tifa, but you didn't start out thinking that.
Part 1: Can't Stop Winning
...Things are looking great! It just so happens Pink Girl is the very first character you see in the game. Writers use the order of character introduction to convey the relative importance of the cast. Someone introduced among the first (or among the last) of a main cast often imply they are among the most important. What's more, this is often extended to a concept called First Girl Wins, where the first girl our hero meets is the love interest. You play through the game, sticking with the default name choice of Cloud, learning a bit about our cold mercenary hero. He's a cool guy, and he's only in this for the money--although you can probably guess he'll be pulled into the emotional stakes before long. While there is one other girl who technically meet Cloud first, you can judge from her design that she's just a sidekick character with little prominence, especially when compared with her leader, Barret's far more unique and interesting look. So she can be rather disregarded as a non-love interest type. And, just as you hoped, Pink Girl ends up being the first potential love interest Cloud meets! They even get a little Meet Cute, complete with the little awkwardness and surprise these meetings often have. You may be surprised to find there's a bit of a dialogue system when it comes to her, allowing you, as the player, to ignore her. But you're Pink Girl #1 Fan, so of course you choose to talk with her a bit before you go on your way. But a bit of a curveball: once you make it to the Sector 7 Slums, you meet another girl, Tifa, this time with a unique design. What's worse, she's Cloud's childhood friend. That's worrying--childhood friend romances are pretty common, especially in Japanese media. You're a bit relieved that instead of getting her own unique introduction, she is introduced aside a little girl character as well, and among a group of characters you already know. It seems the game is downplaying her relative importance, highlighted by the fact you have the choice to give the flower you bought from Pink Girl to either her or the little girl... and you'll probably be naturally inclined to give it to the little girl, since giving Tifa the flower is a bit forward and you just inadvertently scared the little girl. You are given a moment to talk to Tifa alone. This is definitely an important moment in understanding the point of her character--it's here you'd expect the game to establish whether she should be perceived as an actual love interest to Cloud or not. And, you, Pink Girl #1 Fan, are relieved. Cloud is standoffish towards her, eager to leave even without waiting for payment. Tifa tries to appeal to him on the basis of their past relationship, and that doesn't work. Finally Tifa has to remind him about some promise they made--a promise that Cloud notably forgot. All-in-all, the writing seems to be communicating to us "Cloud is very important to Tifa, but Tifa is less important to Cloud". Based on what you've learned about the game so far, the most likely role for Tifa to take is as a love rival, not a love interest herself. You will go on a mission with her and Barret, but won't spend too much personal time with her there. There was some optional flirtatious lines, but, again, being so forward it feels a bit unnatural to pick them. You've yet to see further sign of Pink Girl, but are finally rewarded for your patience with yet another Meet Cute! That's right, Pink Girl--who you now know is named Aeris--is so important she gets three unique introductions, and two Meet Cutes! The third is, appropriately, the most substantial, set in what is so far the only beautiful place you've seen in the game. When Aeris comes under threat, you might note a pretty significant change in our hero's attitude. Instead of his usual "pay me now!" approach, he implicitly agrees to protect Aeris with no more promise than a single date. Cloud is also much more light-hearted, he jokes, and laughs, and seems to suddenly open up a bit more to Aeris than he did even to his childhood friend Tifa. So far, it's looking great! Pretty much case closed, right? All signs point to Aeris as the main love interest, Tifa as the love rival. You'll get to spend a whole sequence basically going on a date with Aeris (to save Tifa, but still, that's just the pretext for Aeris time), with multiple NPCs commenting about how couple-y you look. Then, when Aeris is kidnapped, Cloud immediately jumps forward wanting to rescue her! No talking about money at all, he seems to finally be invested in emotional stakes the way you thought he would earlier, and it's all thanks to Aeris! If you had to guess what Tifa's character arc is going to be, it's probably going to be about letting go of Cloud as this idyllic memory of a childhood love, accepting her defeat gracefully and finding happiness elsewhere. Our hero and heroine will reveal the extent of their feelings together, defeat the bad guy, save the Planet and--! And...? Uh...
Part 2: Sorry, What?
...did the love interest just... die? That can't be right? It's weirdly final though. She gets stabbed. The villain gloats. The hero mourns. The heroine doesn't even get to say any parting words of love to the hero... and you still have two disks left! Surely there's a way to bring her back, this really can't be happening. Love interests do sometimes die, but usually early in the story, or towards the end, but right in the middle of the story? She's got to come back. But the heroes seem to be moving on a bit fast. The love interest is dead! The entire mood of the story should shift now towards grim determination... so how come you're snowboarding??? Ok maybe she's going to come back really soon, so they're not bothering to have the characters grieve. You have your chance to confront the villain again, this is the perfect time for the hero to wax poetic about his lost love and remind everyone exactly what he's fighting for... so, hey, what's with this?
But, Tifa...... But you said, 'Long time no see, Cloud' right? Those words will always support me. I am the one you grew up with. I'm Cloud of Nibelheim. No matter how much I lose faith in myself, that is the truth. That's why you shouldn't be so scared. No matter what anyone else says to me, it's your attitude that counts...
...Sorry. Especially you, Tifa. I'm really sorry. You've been so good to me...... I don't know what to say... I never lived up to being 'Cloud'. Tifa...... Maybe one day you'll meet the real 'Cloud'.
Now it's time to be really thrown off base. Cloud and Tifa are placed together by the story to share revelation after revelation, and Cloud suddenly starts talking about the importance of Tifa and her feelings to him...? How is this appropriate for the romance as you understood it? Aeris still isn't back! She doesn't even get mentioned in this scene! And then, after all those revelations, Cloud disappears and Disk 1 ends...
Part 3: Uh oh.
...and you start playing as Tifa? That mood shift you thought ought to have happened after Aeris' death instead happens now. This is really worrying. The game isn't treating Aeris' death as the emotional axis point for our hero, but rather, the hero's identity crisis. You're playing as Tifa now, and the party is spending more time assuring Tifa about Cloud, being concerned about Tifa's well being, than they spent mourning Aeris. You're spending more time with character work on Tifa here than you even spent on Cloud! When Tifa finds Cloud again, she sticks with him, and the NPCs are all remarking on how devoted and in love she is. Being the kind of genre it is, this doesn't look great for you, Pink Girl #1 Fan. You already know Tifa has feelings for Cloud, and now the game is going out of its way to highlight how devoted she is, how deeply she cares for him on unprecedented levels in the narrative. Aeris never got anything like this. What exactly is the point here? Sure, Tifa is a love rival, but you don't need to literally play as her to get this point across. Aeris is dead, there's no reason for the player to be asked to start caring about Tifa this much. I mean, you already know that Cloud doesn't care about Tifa as much as she cares about him, he didn't even remember this important promise they made together, and it's not like he has memory iss-- uh oh. Tifa and Cloud take a dip into the Lifestream together, and all of those narrative tools the writers had been using earlier seem to collapse under the weight of freshly revealed context:
Aeris being the First Girl? Nope, you get a new flashback depicting Cloud meeting Tifa again right before the beginning of the game and jumpstarting the whole plot. Her voice was what brought him back!
Cloud not remembering this promise? Nope, literally memory issues, this promise is actually so important to him it's why he left to become a SOLDIER... double jumpstarting the plot! Tifa is twice again the reason this story is happening!
Cloud not putting as much importance on his relationship with Tifa? Nope, it's the most formative aspect about his life, every personality quirk of his is tied directly to his relationship and feelings with Tifa.
Cloud leaving Tifa without waiting to be paid? He's under a mental compulsion from Jenova/Sephiroth without knowing it.
Cloud "opening up" to Aeris but not Tifa? Symptomatic of his false identity--to Tifa he's acting like an aloof mercenary because he can't admit to himself he didn't make it into SOLDIER; and to Aeris, the damsel in distress, he's projecting the heroic persona of Zack Fair, the kind of person he always wanted to be.
Short of abject denial, you know what all of this means. The writers made one of the twists of the game not just that Aeris dies, but that she's not the real love interest; Tifa is. If you choose to go back and play Disk 1 from the beginning, you'll be bombarded by all the double layers present in basically all of Cloud, Tifa, and Aeris' interactions among each other. Continuing to play Disk 2/3 will have NPCs encourage you to treat Tifa well, have basically no mention of Aeris at all, and have a culminating emotional scene between Cloud and Tifa, potentially with sex. Wait, Aeris' hand is reaching through the Lifestream, they might be reunit--! Oh wait it's Tifa again. Tifa, once again, saves Cloud, with even the fantasy of Aeris' presence being replaced by the reality of Tifa's. If you're playing the English version, you might latch onto one of the final pieces of dialogue about Cloud saying he's going to meet "her" in the Promised Land--but if you're playing the Japanese version, this isn't as exciting, since there's no "she" pronoun in the sentence. Instead it's our hero and heroine holding eachother while the heroine's theme plays and the hero comforts her about their potentially impending death. The End. Sorry, Pink Girl #1 Fan, but better luck next time! I hear there's a rema--oh.

This week’s vintage batch of Italian and French pens from my own collection might be the largest bunch of Wet Noodles I’ve ever offered! Nibs range from Superflex to Wet Noodle with more than half of the pens being the latter. As you can see, my collecting focus was pens with white metal trim, which all 9 pens have. Some uncommon models here, especially if you’re in the US. As always, all are fully restored and ready to write.
Condition (n.b.): All pens listed below have been disassembled, cleaned and restored with new sacs/seals installed in the last couple months. Each of these pens is guaranteed to fill and write as designed without leaks or other problems. Nibs have been adjusted when necessary to ensure that all lay down a smooth and consistent line. THESE PENS HAVE NO CRACKS, CHIPS, PERSONALIZATIONS, LOOSE OR MISSING PARTS, BENT NIBS, MISALIGNED TINES, BROKEN/WORN OFF TIPPING, OR THREADING ISSUES.
Line Widths and Writing Samples: To provide buyers with as much information as possible, I have started to adopt the following line width standards: XXF (.1-.2mm); XF (approx .3mm); F (approx .4mm); M (approx .6mm); B (approx .8mm). Nib flexibility is determined by variation (max line width under pressure) and softness (amount of pressure). Flexibility designations based on variation generally run as follows for an XF/F nib: Semi-Flex (approx. 1mm); Flex (1.2-1.9mm); Superflex (>2mm). All line width measurements are taken with a digital caliper but should be considered approximations providing a general guide. Width may vary slightly depending on type of ink and paper used as well as amount of pressure applied. All writing samples are on Rhodia dot paper using Waterman Serenity Blue.
1. 1930s-40s Montegrappa Extra (green marble w/ lizard skin window, celluloid, NPT, piston filler, SS F/M Flex/Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/16” capped. Founded c.1912 in Bassano del Grappa, Italy by Edwige Hoffman and Heinrich Helm, Montegrappa (née Elmo) was one of the Big Four Italian makers whose products have had a profound impact on FP design to this day. The Extra was the premier model of the late-1930s and 1940s. This pen has the white metal trim and factory stainless steel nib that distinguish wartime pens in Italy during the restriction on precious metals to aid the war effort. Not a common pen to see Stateside. It’s a piston filler made of green marble celluloid with an eye-catching, transparent, lizard-skin-patterned window in the barrel for viewing ink-level. To fill simply rotate the filler-knob on the end of the barrel counter-clockwise to extend the piston, submerse the nib, then rotate the filler-knob clockwise to draw ink. To quote an Italian collector over at FPN: “Rule No. 1 about vintage Italian pens: Don't let steel nibs scare you off. Unless you're writing with hydrochloric acid, they're every bit as good as the gold nibs from the years before the gold ban.” The stainless steel Montegrappa Extra #4 nib in this pen is no exception, yielding Super-Flexible variation with Flexible softness. It lays down a smooth and consistent F/M line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.0mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). A nib with particularly juicy flow that’s reliable over its full range of flex, making it a great choice for boldly shaded writing and calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent [B]. Nickel-plated trim is clean with no notable flaws aside from a bit of plating wear to the cap bands on one side of the cap (see timestamp photo). Celluloid is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes aside from some fine scratches on the plastic between and below the cap bands. Barrel transparency is superb (DETAIL PHOTO). Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is deep and fully legible. Feed is missing a couple fins from one side, which has no discernible effect on writing performance (see DETAIL PHOTO LEFT). This pen's filling mechanism was restored in the last couple years but does have a little quirk in filling I haven’t been able to diagnose. It fills near to factory capacity smoothly with no leaks, but one must be careful to avoid extending the piston all the way down to the bottom of the ink-view window. If extended all the way down, the bottom part of the piston loses connection with the top part, requiring the section to be unscrewed to help the piston back up with a pencil eraser while turning the knob. This is a straightforward process but annoying, so I’ve always chosen to fill to just 90% of factory capacity to avoid it. A scarce pen in a striking color pattern. Price: $320 $290
2. 1930s-40s Montegrappa Extra (green swirl w/ lined window, celluloid, NPT, piston filler, SS XF Wet Noodle nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/16” capped. For more on Montegrappa and the Extra, see description of pen #1 above. This pen has white metal, wartime trim and nib, but it retains the elegant roller-clip distinctive of Italian pens of the 1930s – so likely late-1930s production. It’s another piston filler made of celluloid in an interesting, green swirl pattern with a transparent, lined window in the barrel for viewing ink level. To quote an Italian collector over at FPN: “Rule No. 1 about vintage Italian pens: Don't let steel nibs scare you off. Unless you're writing with hydrochloric acid, they're every bit as good as the gold nibs from the years before the gold ban.” The stainless steel Montegrappa Extra #4 nib in this pen epitomizes this statement, being a Wet Noodle with variation and softness comparable to that of a dip pen nib. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.3mm) under minimal pressure. Thin hairlines, astonishingly responsive snap-back that rivals the 14k dip pen nib in pen #5 below, and reliable flow over its full range of flex makes it an ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian (see WRITING SAMPLE). Condition: excellent [B]. Nickel-plated trim is clean with no notable flaws aside from a bit of plating wear to the cap bands on the same side of the cap as pen #1 above (see timestamp photo). Celluloid is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any micro-scratches. Barrel transparency is excellent apart from a ring of staining (DETAIL PHOTO). Filling system restored with new cork in the last couple years - operation can be a tad stiff if it hasn't been used in a while so I recommend storage filled with water. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is deep and fully legible. Price: $370SOLD
3. c.1940 Aurora Selene (brown web, celluloid, NPT, button filler, Platiridio XF Wet Noodle nib). This is an oversized pen by vintage standards, having a thick girth and measuring 5 3/16” capped. Counded in 1919 by Isaia Levi and located in Turin, Italy, Aurora remains one of the most celebrated Italian makers. Introduced in 1940 amid Axis restrictions on precious metals, the Selene was their wartime button-filler and was marketed as “the pen for everyone.” In 1943 the Aurora factory was bombed by the Allies, perhaps contributing to this model’s short span of production. This example is made of celluloid in a fetching brown shell color pattern evocative of the 2nd-gen Eversharp Doric. Nickel plated clip and early-style cap bands with wider center band. One historically interesting detail of this pen is that its barrel bears the subtle heatstamped personalization of Lancia, the famous Italian auto manufacturer (see timestamp photo). To fill the pen, simply unscrew the blind cap, submerse the nib, and depress the metal button once (DETAIL PHOTO). This big pen has a strong fill and holds a lot of ink. As if the 2 pens above weren’t evidence enough of the quality of Italian steel nibs, the Aurora Platiridio #5 in this pen takes the cake. Not only is it a Wet Noodle with softness and flow rivaling that of a dip pen nib, but it’s capable of one of the widest max line widths I’ve ever measured. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to an incredible 5B? (approx 2.8mm!) under minimal pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Even so, it retains a superbly responsive snap-back that gives one precise control over the line under any amount of pressure. That and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Note that due to the considerable space between the tines of this nib at full flex, Waterman Serenity Blue had trouble keeping the surface tension but my trusty Omas Grey solved the problem entirely, producing flawlessly reliable lines under full flex. So some experimentation with wetter inks might be in order. Condition: excellent+ [B+] assuming you take the “Lancia” marking as an interesting mark of historical provenance as opposed to a flaw. Nickel-plated trim is clean with no brassing or other notable flaws. ). Celluloid is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any micro-scratches. Manufacturer imprint on the section is deep and fully legible. Price: $420SOLD
4. 1930s-40s Astura Nova (grey pearl snakeskin, celluloid, NPT, lever filler, 14k XF Superflex/Wet Noodle nib). This full-sized model measures 5 1/16” capped. Astura pens were made by S.A.F.I.S., a company in Turin (fd. 1926) that would come to be one of the most influential Italian pen makers of the early half of the twentieth century (MORE INFO). They’re best known for producing pens of considerably high quality such as Radius and The King. And this Astura follows suit. It’s made of celluloid in a particularly bold and pearlescent snakeskin pattern, complemented by nickel plated trim. 14k Warranted #3 nib yields Super-flexible variation with softness verging on that of a Wet Noodle. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.2mm) under very light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, superbly responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another excellent choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: fine [C]. Nickel-plated trim shows some brassing to the clip and some of the lower cap band, which has been factored into the price. Nib has a mark on one tine that's merely cosmetic, having no effect on durability or performance. Celluloid is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any micro-scratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is deep and fully legible. Another beautiful Italian pen and another lovely writer. Price: $280SOLD
5. 1930s-40s Novo Retrofit (green moss, celluloid, NPT, button filler, 14k XXF Needlepoint Wet Noodle nib). This full-sized model measures 4 7/8” capped. The only maker’s mark on this pen is a barrel imprint that reads “Novo.” But I haven’t been able to determine whether that’s a make or a model or anything about it, for that matter. It’s clearly Italian, of a quality similar to the Montegrappas and Aurora above, probably originating from one of those conglomerates that collaborated with some of the major Italian makers. In fact, the clip of this pen is identical to that of pen #2. This pen is made of celluloid in an unusual, moss green color pattern with flashes of a brighter green. Nickel-plated trim with elegant roller-clip. This pen is a button filler. To fill the pen, simply unscrew the blind cap, submerse the nib, and depress the metal button once. This pen came to me nibless but with a very narrow section, so I equipped it with a smaller, 14k, iridium-tipped Aikin Lambert dip pen nib - adjusted and tuned to match factory performance. That nib is a Wet Noodle with killer snap-back. It lays down a smooth and consistent XXF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.1mm) under minimal pressure (probably the softest nib of the batch) (see WRITING SAMPLE). Needlepoint hairlines, effortless variation, surgically precise snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Nickel-plated trim is clean with no brassing or other notable flaws aside from perhaps a sliver or two of high-point wear on the apex of the faceted clip. Celluloid is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any micro-scratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is deep and fully legible. Price: $270SOLD
6. 1930s-40s Edacoto 02 Retrofit (coral grey pearl, celluloid, NPT, button filler, 14k XXF Needlepoint Wet Noodle nib). This is a larger Edacoto model, having a thicker girth than standard and measuring 5 1/16” capped. Edacoto (née Edac) was French maker based in Paris from 1922 to the mid-1960s. Edacotos are well-made pens known for their unusual color patterns and distinctive waterfall clip design. This one is a case in point, being made in a grey pearl celluloid with a quasi-psychedelic color pattern resembling chatoyant coral that seems to shift when the pen is turned under light. This model’s size, filling system, and trim configuration situates it near the top of Edacoto’s lineup. It is a button filler. To fill the pen, simply unscrew the blind cap, submerse the nib, and depress the metal button once. It’s equipped with one of my dip pen nib retrofits: a large, 14k, iridium tipped E.S. Johnson that’s been adjusted and tuned to match factory performance. That nib is another Wet Noodle, laying down a smooth and consistent XXF line that widens to an impressive 4B+ (approx 2.5mm) under minimal pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Needlepoint hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Nickel-plated trim is clean with no brassing or notable flaws apart from the top cap band having lost some of its original luster (I assume). Celluloid is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any micro-scratches. Feed is missing a a fin from one side, which has no discernible effect on writing performance (see DETAIL PHOTO RIGHT). Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is deep and fully legible. Price: $310SOLD
7. 1930s-40s Edacoto (grey web, celluloid, NPT, lever filler, SS XF/F Wet Noodle nib). This full-sized model measures 4 7/8” capped. For more on Edacoto, see description of pen #6 above. This pen is made of grey web celluloid complemented by nickel plated trim with deluxe, triple cap bands. SS Edacoto 87 nib is yet another Wet Noodle with flow and softness comparable to that of a dip pen nib. It lays down a smooth and consistent XF/F line that widens to an impressive 4B+ (approx 2.5mm) under minimal pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Effortless variation, strong snap-back, and reliably wet flow over its full range of flex make it another ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent [B]. Nickel-plated trim is clean with no brassing or notable flaws apart from a pin sized spot of wear on the lever and a couple on the cap bands on each side of the cap (see timestamp photo). Celluloid is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any micro-scratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is weakened but fully legible. Price: $220SOLD
8. 1930s Edacoto (grey pearl marble, celluloid, NPT, lever filler, 14k F Flex/Superflex nib). This smaller model measures 4 5/8” capped. For more on Edacoto, see pen #6 above. This one is made of grey pearl marble complemented by nickel-plated trim. 14k Warranted nib yields Super-Flexible variation with Flexible softness. It lays down a smooth and consistent F line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.0mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for expressive and calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent/fine [B/C]. Nickel-plated trim looks clean with the naked eye but shows a peppering of wear under a loupe. Celluloid is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes apart from subtle shrinkage of the cap that can’t be seen so much as felt when running a finger down it – merely cosmetic with no affect on how the cap screws on. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel is weakened but fully legible. Price: $150 $140
9. 1940s-50s Mercury w/ Sticker (blue swirl, celluloid, NPT, button filler, 14k XF Superflex nib). This full-sized model measures 5 3/8” capped. This mysterious pen has defied all my research efforts. It’s marked “Mercury” on the barrel in the usual place and “B-tg / SGDG / Made in France” farther up toward the section. It comes with its original price sticker, ehich reads “Mercury” and “225” penned in ink. This pen is made of a curious wrapped celluloid in blue and black complemented by heavy, white metal trim with “Bronze au Glucinium” stamped in the top of the spring-activated clip. Never seen trim made of this! Threads for the blind cap appear to be stainless steel. All this gives the pen a substantial heft in the hand. Super-Flexible 14k Mercury nib lays down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.0mm) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another great choice for calligraphic writing styles. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. This pen is in pristine, museum-grade condition. Nickel-plated trim is immaculate with no brassing or other notable flaws. Celluloid is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes – scarcely even any micro-scratches. Manufacturer imprint on the barrel are deep and fully legible. Price: $240SOLD

2024.05.12 19:39 SuperStealYoGirlHelp me not spend $650 on a new battery
I get my car serviced at Subaru dealerships because I have the Gold Plus warranty and it makes for easier logging of the maintenance history. I took my '21 sport in to the dealership for routine servicing yesterday. They said the battery was testing bad, which was news to me because my car hasn't had any problems starting whatsoever, and they could install one that day, but it would cost $650. I've had no issues with my battery at all, but it is 3.5 years old and coming up on 50k miles. From the terms of the extended warranty, when I do eventually replace my battery, I think it does need to be a Subaru one, or else that provides grounds for any future claims to be denied due to having a third party part. Doing some cursory googling and $650 definitely sounds like robbery even with labor. I don't know all that much about cars so any advice would be appreciated! EDIT: I went to my local Advance Auto Parts and got the battery tested. It checked out fine, so looks like I will not be replacing my battery any time soon and no longer going to my dealership to get serviced. Friendship over! I learned a lot about batteries today and I think I'm going to learn to do my own maintenance from now on. Thank you all for your helpful replies!
2024.05.12 16:15 PoisonedWhispers[Part 2] An analysis of the behaviour that leads to misinformation on the subreddit and in general; methods to curb this; and other malarkey.
Returning to this dastardly subreddit, for my next example, points 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 are relevant. OP provided a screenshot of a BBC YouTube title, stating: "Israeli hit squad dressed as doctors kill Palestinians in hospital." Per point 2, by failing to immediately link to the video, or immediately mention what the video contains, folk could come away with the conclusion that the BBC never reports that these were militants. In other words, some might believe that the misreporting here extends past the video title, when it does not, and this could be avoided by providing salient details sooner rather than later. This submission was made during the temporary ban, and I thought it was interesting enough as a case study to come back to.
For this submission/meme, points 1, 2, and 6 are relevant. I saw that we weren’t going to get good-faith engagement with the entirety of Oxfam’s position here on why they initially opposed airdrops, and I attempted to outline the full extent of their views so that it can be critiqued appropriately. This meme is not too dissimilar from some Twitter leftist fixating on one short clip of Destiny during one of his heated gamer moments; his actual positions aren’t being engaged with, and it’s intellectually dull. There’s more to Destiny’s positions than a twenty-second clip; there’s more to Oxfam’s position than the one tweet. The fact of the matter is that there’s a long series of tweets here, and while the tweet OP chose to highlight is risible, is dumb, and is insufferable, we are more than capable on this subreddit in being more nuanced and fair when it comes to our criticism. As I highlight, there were some concerns here that were not entirely unreasonable. At the time of my comment, there weren’t yet any reports on injuries due to airdrops. These reports appeared in the following days and weeks, where Gazans were killed when a parachute in an airdrop failed to deploy, and some drowned in their attempts to retrieve parcels that landed in the sea. Retrospectively, I wouldn't say that aid should not have been airdropped merely because it would result in these deaths, but a fair assessment of Oxfam here at the time should have taken these concerns into account. Oxfam’s associate director also endorses a Twitter thread where some prescriptions are given on how ought this aid delivery be facilitated. He recommends that the Gaza port be reopened, and to open more crossings. The Biden administration recognized that airdrops would not sufficiently alleviate the problem of being unable to get sufficient quantities of aid distributed, and while the port was not reopened, Biden did announce that a temporary port would be built. Further, Israel approved the reopening of the Erez crossing. The misinformation in OP’s post stems from the fact that folk will be disinterested in reading the twitter thread or any additional threads where they might have elaborated on views. Out of the thousands that interact with the post, a significant chunk will come away with the incorrect belief that Oxfam’s opposition to airdrops was merely due to what was stated in the meme. That is misinformation being propagated — not the most egregious, Hamas-esqe level of misinformation in the world, but misinformation nonetheless.
For our final example points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 are relevant; it’s the whole shebang. To give a quick recounting here, Hobbitfollower isn’t the only masochist that might, occasionally, choose to exclusively sort by new. When I saw the submission, I read the article, and I was a bit annoyed that the Jerusalem Post article doesn’t even link to the mission report that I was interested in reading. I searched for it, posted a link to the report in the very first comment of the thread as surely my fellow dggas would also like to read the report, and then I, well, read the report. When I returned back to the thread, I quoted favourably from the mission report to support another individual's comment. (I would again quote from it in another thread the next day to highlight why Israel struggled to acquire forensic evidence.) But as I scrolled down the thread I came across the subject of our example; 50 upvotes, no article linked, and clearly a charged comment. Consider the steps involved to truly engage with this comment; one would need to:
Click and read the article.
Search for the mission report.
Read the mission report (as some folk probably won’t wanna read 20 pages right off the bat).
Search for the NYT article; bypass the paywall (which is trivially easy nowadays but is still a barrier, and people are lazy); and read the article.
This is a very charged thread: there are going to be a large group of pro-Israel folk browsing this thread, frustrated and irate as bad memories are invoked of all the times they’ve had to deal with or seen pro-Hamas folk engaging in rape denialism. In much the same way a leftist sub is not going to be interested in a dispassionate analysis of an Israeli strike with high civilian collateral damage, this sub — at times — will struggle to calmly assess the subject matter. An expected behaviour isn’t necessarily the correct behaviour — the actions we believe one ought to take. When a misleading tweet goes viral, the damage has already been done, as a considerable amount of people won’t see the subsequent Community Notes that might be slapped on it. Likewise, some of the thousands who see OP’s highly upvoted comment will think, “Oh, this has a lot of upvotes, I guess it must be true. How horrible of the NYT to frame this as a both sides issue”, and thus misinformation has spread. This incorrect belief will mold their perceptions of the NYT. When they encounter more reporting by the NYT on I-P in the future, they might even think back to this moment: “Ah, I remember when these bozos tried to say that the Israeli accusations were the same as the Palestinian accusations.” I also referred to OP’s comment as disinformation. In every example discussed so far, I don't assume malicious intent. I just begin with the foundation that a mistake was made, and I don’t enmesh myself by throwing out accusations of lying. In this case, however, OP has indirectly acknowledged that I was correct, but they still haven’t bothered to edit their original comment. Once again, this comment is a really good example of point 1. I obviously also disagree with their conclusion, and the process by which they’re arriving at their conclusion is still very flawed — and other people are simply going to adopt their conclusion while not even attempting to reach there by their own independent assessment. If you see someone quote from an article, and they don’t even link it, and the comment is very charged, I would encourage y’all to seek out the article yourself; you may come away with a different interpretation. I'm sure you've seen this meme before: "I'm just waiting for Destiny to comment on this so that I know what to think 😎." We meme about it, but there is, of course, an undercurrent of truth here, as we have confidence in Destiny's ability to research, and thus we feel comfortable adopting his beliefs and opinions. It's nice not having to do the research ourselves. Lazy fucks. This applies to Reddit comments you see as well. Don't just adopt the conclusion of someone else because their beliefs align with yours and they're speaking with authority. Do the legwork yourself; be mindful of The Six Points; and you might find that someone on your own side is actually spreading misinformation, or is espousing an opinion that you disagree with.
Purgatory
I was perma-banned some time after my previous comment for a comment I made in a different thread. Before I get to that in the next fuck-me-who-knows-how-I'm-gonna-write-that-I'm-so-fucked section, I did want to bring up two final examples.
For Example A, points 1, 3, 4, and 5 are relevant. Obviously, I can’t attempt point 6 because I was banned. Now, I actually agree with OP as I share their skepticism towards the notion that these amputations are “routine”, but referring to the article as a "fake story" is too strong, and, as always, their process here is flawed. The claims they make here about the Haaretz article and CNN article are misleading, but it is immediately upvoted because it feels right, particularly because the first reply just poisons the well. Haaretz did not speak to an anonymous person, they are reporting on a letter they have seen written by a doctor and sent to senior Israeli officials; the doctor did not justify the claim that the event is routine based on having seen only two amputations, that's merely the amputations they saw in the week they wrote the letter (but the phrasing here is ambiguous, as the doctor could be referring to the handcuff injuries as being the "routine" event); and the IDF did not confirm or deny all the claims, but gave a fairly standard, boilerplate response instead. The misleading claims in this comment was eventually addressed — and, as I’m sure you’re irritated by the repetition by now, the goal of this post is to turn this “eventually” into an “immediately.”
For Example B, points 1 and 5 are relevant. I want to be very careful with this one as I don't want to be misconstrued. Similar to the previous example, I mostly agree with their conclusion that these Wikipedia pages can be very flawed, and partisan editors can tarnish the objectivity that we wish could be maintained across all articles. However, you know the drill by now, point 1. There’s much to be said about the infamous “24-hour window” debacle, and I made a submission a while ago on this. I think there are parts of this story that both the pro-Palestine and pro-Israel crowd get wrong — but the latter is generally more correct, and I would agree with OP here that the information here is, at the very least, incomplete. However, per point 5, the articles they are critiquing are not linked. How many people here actually sought out the two articles referenced here? As I’ve already demonstrated, we know how many misleading or false claims you can get away with before they’re finally addressed. A user in that thread made some edits to the contentious lines in question in the Wikipedia article. This was the Wikipedia article at the time OP’s comment was made. OP quotes this section:
Prior to the raids, Israel had called for the more than a million people living in the north half of the Gaza Strip to evacuate during a 24-hour window, while Hamas instructed those residents to stay put.
The two citations here are a Reuters article and a Politico article. The Politico article is arguably redundant, but it’s not being cited because it’s supposed to make a statement about a 24-hour window; it’s being cited to support the statement about Hamas:
Hamas is complicating the situation, urging residents to stay in their homes.
The Reuters article also mentions this:
“We tell the people of northern Gaza and from Gaza City, stay put in your homes, and your places," Eyad Al-Bozom, spokesman for the Hamas Interior Ministry, told a news conference.
Contrary to what OP said, both articles use the word “evacuation” at some point. The first part of the quote from the Wikipedia page is supported by this statement in the Reuters article:
On Friday Israel gave more than a million residents of the northern half of Gaza 24 hours to flee to the south to avoid an onslaught.
In a follow-up comment OP claims that the archived link, which pulled the earliest version of the Reuters article available, does not support the line. This seems to have been an error on the part of whoever chose this hyperlink. When the Wikipedia article first mentions calls for evacuation, this was how the Reuters article cited looked like at the time; regardless of the veracity of the claim, the article did support what the Wikipedia page mentions. To reiterate, OP is completely correct about this pernicious problem with Wikipedia. It’s just that in this example, I don’t think it qualifies as a case of those darn pro-Palestine editors back at it again. The nuanced position here is pretty difficult to get to, and I don’t think the editors wrote this line in the interest of distorting the truth to serve their own side.
This post about how Hamas supporters are influencing Wikipedia does better in terms of substantiating their claims — but there are issues here that I would have loved to address, and there is a good critique on OP’s prescriptions that was buried at the bottom. Unfortunately, OP has been suspended from Reddit. If you’re reading this mate, call me 🥺. There are a lot of hyperlinks in OP’s post (lol, sez fucking me), and it’s completely reasonable that someone won’t feel inclined to click every single one; that’s not an expectation I would ever demand. From going through the post, there are several small critiques I would have made (e.g., while I don’t believe the Mondo article should have been cited, OP claims that in the article, “The only people criticizing Wiesel here is the author of the opinion piece.” FWIW, the article does reference and cite a Haaretz article, and a Foreign policy article, both of which levy criticism against Wiesel), but I’m just going to focus on this line:
If you’re going to call someone a literal Hamas lobbyist, that is definitely a link I’m clicking. What I know about Abdu is simply what I can assume about his beliefs from various tweets I’ve seen by him over the past several months; but I’ve never looked into their background other than being aware of their position at EMM. Upon opening the link I see… a 2013 article about Clare Short. From reading the article, it looks like OP missed some steps in outlining how they arrived at their conclusion, and I saw only a few people inquiring about this. To fill in the steps on what I presume OP wanted to say, from the article they linked:
Moshe Ya’alon, former IDF chief of staff, outlawed the Council for European Palestinian Relations (CEPR) – a Belgian non-profit organisation that lobbies on behalf of the Hamas-led Gaza Government – using emergency defence regulations.
I haven’t looked into CEPR, and they obviously disputed the lobbying charge; I’m just going to take the claim at face-value. In 2011, Abdu was assistant director of the CEPR, and still held a position there for several years. They've since left the organization, but per point 1, if this is how OP arrived at the conclusion that Abdu is a “literal Hamas lobbyist”, I think it could use a bit more work, with additional clarification on what they mean by lobbyist here. I’m sure they can do it, it just happened to not be in this post. I'm not going to harp on about point 5 here as I only apply that to incidents where a claim is made; one or two articles are linked; and then no one reads them, assuming the claim must be true as long as articles are provided. I would literally never make the prescription that if someone writes an effort-post, we must click every hyperlink to fact-check. I mean, it's not like I would have any other motivation for saying that... sweats profusely 🙄 Just to make one final point on EMM, it is a rubbish outlet, and any time I encounter one of their articles, I roll my eyes knowing I’m going to get some outlandish claim where I can find fuck-all for corroboration from other outlets. However, sometimes there is corroboration, where EMM was the first to notice that the IDF labelled a bicycle as an RPG in the drone footage they published, and then the NYT confirmed the finding (except for the other stupid claim made in the tweet.) But anyways, these moments are astronomically rare.
Okay, I lied, one final example as it’s interesting to see how people here parse articles and headlines, but before I address the example, let me talk about Reuters headlines.
Reuters headlines
They’re not always consistent on this front, but I generally like how Reuters writes their headlines. A Reuters headline will often contain the phrase “US says”. [30][31][32] What I’m expecting in the article when I see a headline containing this phrase is some official representing the Biden administration outlining what their particular policy, position, belief, etc., is on whatever the subject matter may be, or some action they took which makes it clear what their position is. In the given examples, we have statements from Biden, Blinken, the US military, and so on. Sometimes the US officials remain anonymous, sharing information in private briefings. If there isn’t an official statement by the US available on a matter, the headline might use the phrase “source says” to talk about ongoing developments. [33][34] “Reuters will use unnamed sources where necessary when they provide information of market or public interest that is not available on the record. We alone are responsible for the accuracy of such information.” [35] Relevant to Example C, Reuters uses the same guidelines for “Saudi Arabia says” [36][37] and “sources say” for information relevant to Saudi Arabia. [38]
Israeli outlets, A royal family website, and Saudi sources: An amusing chain of events
Keeping the previous section in mind, when I came across this version of a Jerusalem Post article posted to this subreddit, you can imagine what I’m expecting here — particularly because this would be momentous news to see Saudi Arabia make a public statement that they helped defend Israel. Instead, we get reporting on what Saudi Arabia’s royal family said on their website, and what a source connected to the Saudi royal family told KAN, another Israeli outlet — and we don’t get links to either of them. If there was no statement on the royal family’s website, this would have been a bad headline to write based on what this source said. Unfortunately for the JP, there is no official website for Saudi Arabia’s royal family. You’ll see in the current version, they remove the reference to that website, and also add the following line:
The Al Arabiya news site said sources had informed it that Saudi Arabia had not participated in the interception of Iranian drones and missiles.
Here’s the article by the Saudi state-owned outlet, which is essentially their mouthpiece to deny the ongoing report. I24news, however, didn’t get the memo:
Saudi Arabia publicly acknowledges role in defending Israel against Iranian attack While Jordan had openly disclosed its role in the defensive maneuver, Saudi Arabia's acknowledgment came in the form of a summary on its official website
When I first saw the JP submission on this subreddit, I bookmarked it for later to come back to and find the sources, as it’s not the first time I’ve seen dubious reporting from KAN news. I was also curious if anyone in the thread was going to highlight some of the discrepancies in the article, and, well, shoutout to this keen reader! Fact-checking the JP article slipped my mind, but thanks to a comment I saw on another subreddit, they correctly pointed out that the website referenced was not affiliated with the Saudi royal family, and thus the article the JP and other Israeli outlets had presumably read should not have been taken as an official statement. Christ, this is obvious from the very first line:
A source from the Saudi royal family, who prefers anonymity, converses with the Kan public broadcaster. The individual subtly acknowledges Saudi Arabia’s supposed involvement in thwarting Iranian attack drones bound for Israel the previous evening, citing that Saudi Arabian airspace automatically intercepts “any suspicious entity”. The same figure takes a swing at Iran, accusing them of instigating a conflict in Gaza. This, they suggest, is a deliberate attempt to unravel the progress established towards normalizing relations with Israel, as per Kan’s report. In the words of the official, as put forth by Kan, “Iran is a nation that endorses terrorism, and the world should have curtailed it much earlier.”
Why would the official Saudi royal website use an anonymous source within the royal family to make their public announcement, and why would they quote what the official said to an Israeli outlet?! It’s fascinating to see this play out: the supposed source spoke to Kan News; Houseofsaud presumably sees this and makes an article on the Kan segment; the JP sees this article and the segment, poorly reads it, and then cites it and the original Kan segment; outlets like the Daily Wire pick up on the story from the JP; and then on it goes, spreading like wildefire, before the Saudis take note (“oh fuck, oh fuck, where are these reports coming from?”) and disseminate a message denying that any “official” website publicly confirmed their involvement. The Saudis are involved, and they’re keeping tight-lipped about the extent of their involvement. Just to quote one more line from the i24news article because it’s shockingly poor:
The post subtly hinted at Saudi Arabia's involvement in intercepting suspicious entities in its airspace, highlighting the kingdom's proactive stance in safeguarding regional stability.
This is written based on this line from the HouseofSaud article:
A source from the Saudi royal family, who prefers anonymity, converses with the Kan public broadcaster. The individual subtly acknowledges Saudi Arabia’s supposed involvement in thwarting Iranian attack drones bound for Israel the previous evening, citing that Saudi Arabian airspace automatically intercepts “any suspicious entity”.
It’s the individual/source who is being subtle, not the post itself as i24 news mentions. Anyways, this is not a case of misinformation by the subreddit. There's nothing wrong with posting a JP article, and this is easily the least offensive Example, but point 5 is nicely relevant here. I thought y'all might find this to be interesting, particularly because some people probably still believe that Saudi Arabia has publicly acknowledged their involvement, and maybe that could be someone reading this section. It's also another example where, because I’m banned, I can’t offer a bit of nuance. stares intently at 4THOT It’s a shame Destiny didn’t finish reading the article, I’m curious what he would have said. He speculates that the report was from intelligence or monitoring, but moves on before finishing the article; it’s also the updated version of the article, without the tidbit about the Saudi royal family website.
Finito
I'm going to close out this section here. There's always more to include, more examples that demonstrate the aforementioned points, but I'd rather focus on my own comments instead of threads where I was unable to contribute my thoughts. There's been a plethora of discourse here surrounding the campus protests, and maybe those are still ongoing if I manage to post this at a sooner date. For completely legitimate and fair justifications, all of these threads are going to be very charged; and maybe upon reading this post some of y'all might feel more inclined to analyze these situations dispassionately, mindful of cases where the reporting might not be the greatest.
I fucking lied again, there’s more. Literally the day after I finished writing the above paragraph, a new example popped up that I can’t resist the temptation to include. Stop giving me material! As I spoke of above, the campus protests have resulted in a charged atmosphere on the subreddit, which means that this post stating that a “Jewish-Israeli family’s restaurant was targeted in a hate crime” is immediately catapulted to the front page. The biggest problem here is that, per point 2, the presentation of the post led folk to believe that this was a recent event because OP had omitted the date this took place, and this led to one user to thoughtfully suggest that it might be worth setting up a GoFundMe to help the owners with the repairs. To reemphasize the point I’ve made throughout this post, I’m looking to incentivise better behaviour to occur sooner. It took nearly 10 hours before one jolly chap came along to do the fact-check. Naturally, had I seen this post while browsing arnew, I would have done the same, and so would a couple other users here as well who are good for this sort of thing — and that's unfortunate that I’m saying a “couple” instead of “many.” There is no curiosity amongst everyone who interacted with this post to inquire into the event; not even something simple as requesting OP for an article. So folks, always ask for a source if OP doesn’t provide one just so you have a bit more context. (Also, I am fascinated with the anecdote OP attached to this post. Did they just make up their credentials?)
This is a wonderful example to close out this section because it exemplifies so many of the problematic behaviours that I have demonstrated in this post. I was only made aware of this thread because a user here DM'd me a link to the thread. I will refer to the individual posting misinformation in the comments as "OP", and I'll refer to the submitter of the post by their username, Sylmd. The rebuttals to OP are excellent, and I will focus more on the behaviour here. Sylmd posted a submission doing a quick lil' fact-check on a Destiny tweet, noting the fact that he seemed to have misread or misremembered a particular report. I say "seemed" here in case Destiny was referring to some other report or article he had read, but that seems unlikely as he has referenced this report in several of his debates, and the report was the subject of his previous tweets. Regardless, it was a small mistake, and apart from failing to immediately link the tweet and the report (link your sources you silly goose), Sylmd's post is civil, calm, and makes no accusations of malicious intent. According to OP, Destiny was actually right, and 300+ IDF soldiers were in fact injured. Now, there's so much that is astonishingly problematic with OP's comment, and I gotta... mention it all! Sorry! Naturally, they don't ever quote from their sources, which means it's on us to try and find the relevant sections. OP claims that the articles linked will demonstrate that 380 Israelis were injured -- despite the fact that Sylmd is obviously doing a fact-check on how many Israeli soldiers were injured, and that's literally the subject of Destiny's tweet. Whatever, I'm sure the articles at least "discusses around 380 injuries"? Fuck no they don't! There's no mention of this figure anywhere, and OP somehow racks up 50 upvotes when they accuse Sylmd of lying after they correctly point this out. Did these people actually read the articles, find this magical 380 figure, and think, "Grrr, Sylmd you mendacious scumbag, I see through your Hamas propaganda." Sylmd was sitting at -31, one hour after the thread was made. (If you refer back to Example 2, you'll see that I felt compelled to make a submission when I saw a user was being downvoted for correctly pointing out that an article did not prove a particular claim.) It gets worse. Apparently, you have to "click through all the links in these articles buddy." Well, okay, that's pretty elaborate, how silly of us not to realize this. OP wants us to open up nine Hebrew articles, translate them, and then tally up the number of casualties. Problem?Surely we get to the 380 figure if we click through all the hyperlinks in the article? Fuck no we don't! And even if we did, this is the most blisteringly cumbersome way to prove a claim. The sheer condescension in OP's comment is equivalent to that of a Twitter leftist: "It's not my job to educate you honey, you must read the literature." So where does this mysterious figure come from? Well, as Sylmd correctly pointed out (before OP mentioned it), they are grabbing this figure from Hebrew Wikipedia. Sylmd doesn't provide a link to the article in question, so I will provide it here, and as you can see, the two articles that OP linked came from this Wikipedia page. I'm not convinced OP actually read either of these articles. That's not all. They then linked a report in Hebrew in their edit. Where did they get this report from? It's not on the Wikipedia page, maybe this is something they have bookmarked? Nope, they got it from another user in the thread! After all is said and done, they still somehow racked up 270 upvotes for this awful rebuttal, and they were, "Proud to take a blast for defending the truth." Do I even need to mention the points here? It's an authoritative comment; the linked articles give an "aura" of being correct; and there's confidence in all their comments. To quote from Example 1:
Anyways, since I began this post it looks like the upvotes and downvotes on the original comment have since shifted. Mashallah. It's the behaviour I was describing before: all the low-effort garbage gets upvoted first, and then other people break the circlejerk and try to add nuance. But it would be nice if the nuance was added first and foremost without the need for tedious fact-checks.
That still holds true today.
Consistency and Principles
Do I only address misinformation from the pro-Israel side? Not that it should matter, but no, I will address misinformation from the pro-Palestine on this subreddit if I see it and I feel like addressing it. I was irritated to see muppets like Rob Rousseau spread conspiracies about a "suspicious link" between ISIS and Mossad, and I encountered a user here who was sprouting similar conspiratorial nonsense. You’ll notice that (1) I was blessed to be called a “Reddit pseudo intellectual libtard” (not wrong, not false, this hurts bro); and (2) I apply the exact same methodology here as I do for the examples of misinformation I've addressed elsewhere — which isn’t to say I’m doing anything commendable here. I just read the articles, trying to find the primary sources where relevant, and then see if the “reporting” accurately conveys what was said or written. However, digging up the original source can be a time-consuming endeavour, and compounded by the fact that I might not speak the relevant language — which means that there was a case where I inadvertently made a comment containing misinformation. A couple months ago someone requested a steelman of the argument that Israel is conducting a genocide against Gazans; I offered one, and to support the case I used a misquote taken from a Bloomberg video which omitted a crucial part of Yoev Gallant’s statement: the reference to Hamas, and thus radically changing the context of the statement. I hold myself to the same principle when it comes to curbing misinformation, and I was more than content to edit my comment to ensure it did not propagate further than it already had. Some of you eagle-eyed readers might recognize this Gallant quote, as it made a very marked appearance within… South Africa's genocide case against Israel. Here, that salient reference to Hamas is also omitted, and the accompanying footnote cites the same Bloomberg video that I did. As I wished in another reply, Bloomberg did indeed take the video down eventually. Now, I can be excused for my mistake as I’m not making the positive case outside of my steelman. For South Africa, this is unbelievably shoddy work when you're officially bringing a genocide case against another state. Anyways, I've gone through many examples in this schizo-post, and it's entirely possible that I've made an error at some point; the irony is not lost on me. Feel free to point these errors out. I might not agree with your assessment, but I'm always willing to hear the arguments.
Prescriptions: The Six Points (Déjà vu)
I'm going to end with The Six Points because that's the focus of Part 1 and Part 2. As previously mentioned, this post is not intended to demonstrate that the misinformation the pro-Israel crowd spreads is as egregious as the misinformation the pro-Palestine spreads, whether in general or on this subreddit. While misinformation from the pro-Palestine crowd slips by every now and then on the subreddit, I would make the case that, generally speaking, it is quickly addressed. In my experience, however, I was finding quite a few cases of misinformation from the pro-Israel crowd were taking a concerning amount of time to be addressed; and in the interest of ensuring that it does get addressed in a more timely manner, I believe the following prescriptions would be helpful to keep in mind when browsing the subreddit:
Value the process just as much — if not, more — than the conclusion.
Be wary of how the presentation of information or the omission of pertinent information can lead to the inadvertent spread of misinformation.
Be aware of how “charged” topics/threads lead to poor reasoning that lacks dispassionate analysis.
Be aware of how pre-existing beliefs about an individual or organization alongside the usual biases leads to a reluctance to fact-check, where claims are taken at face-value because they feel right.
Link the article. Read the article. (Thoroughly.)
Redirect criticism to areas where it will be the strongest.

Im after a full size suv with 7 seats, my budget is 8k max, im after something that is reliable, and looks decent. I found this low milage example (55k), and im very interested in it as it looks to be in excellent condition in and out. Is the 2007 nissan pathfinder reliable, do they have any major problems to look out for? As this one is a 2007 could there be any rust problems? Does the price seem reasonable?
Is the Extended warranty beneficial? My dealer quoted around 14K for extension.
I don't know if Auto-start feature is actually useful. Does it have a negative impact on fuel efficiency?
Any suggestions on how to take care of the car, dealer mentioned that even wet cleaning can put some minor marks on the car and given the colour, they will be visible. Dealer suggested to take up Ceramic coating - around 35K. What are your thoughts?

This is the 124th newsletter. You can find the April 28-May 4 edition here if you missed it last week. You can also receive these posts (with images) every Sunday in your email inbox with Substack. —————————— Earth experienced its largest CO2 concentration increase over a 12-month period, scientists say, from March 2023-2024. It was a jump of 4.7ppm more of carbon dioxide, blamed on deforestation, fossil fuels, and El Niño. Experts are saying that El Niño has peaked, and will transition to La Niña within a few months. La Niña lasts about 1-3 years, and it generally cools the Pacific Ocean, and brings more rain to India & Bangladesh, among other changes. Earth also experienced its greatest atmospheric moisture for the month of April. Venezuela has lost its last glacier, the Humboldt, which was reclassified into an “ice field.” It is the first modern nation to lose all its glaciers. Scientists believe Indonesia, Mexico, and Slovenia are next in line to see the extinction of their glaciers. Colombia is also rapidly losing its remaining 6 glaciers. Wildfires in Chile have killed about a hundred people, and injured & displaced thousands. Flooding in Afghanistan. And climate change is ruining cotton crops, and livestock, in Chad. Plus, flooding struck the DRC, overflowing rivers and latrines—affecting some 500,000 people. And some climatologists think we have been underestimating how much climate change is driving greater rainfall & flooding; the worst is yet to come. The first week of May saw so many temperature records broken; some are claiming that it might be the “most record breaking month in climatic history”—until June, that is. Earth has been seeing 13 months of monthly records being broken for global sea surface temperatures. Literally 365 days of record-breaking ocean temperatures. A study in PNAS examined North Pacific “warm blob” heat waves from 2010-2020, and concluded that China’s reduction in aerosols, which cleaned the air but also removed the sun-reflective particles, incidentally probably caused marine heat waves which killed fish and resulted in algae blooms. Bees are having difficulty acclimatizing their nests to rising temperatures. The dugong, while still rarely seen in parts of the world, has been declared extinct inside China, having gone 24 years without a known sighting. In Florida, the suburbification of land under development is pushing the Florida panther closer to extinction; some 100 panthers remain in the sunshine state. Siberia’s Batagaika crater—I prefer its alternative title, “megaslump”—is expanding by about 1M cubic meters, every year. Scientists naturally blame the rapid permafrost melting on climate change. A cruise ship entered New York City with an endangered 44 ft {13.4m} dead sea whale stuck on its bow (front). Investigators are looking into whether it was already dead when the ship hit it. A study in Conservation Letters looked at the 100 largest Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)—which cover 7.3% of all ocean area—and found that almost 60% of this area is not in range of meeting the 2030 preservation goals. Part of India broke May records already; the Maldives, too. Eastern Ukraine ended a far warmer & wetter April than usual. And a heat wave in Mexico scorched previous May temperature records across 10 cities, as well as small regional blackouts. North America felt its all-time hottest May temperature... —————————— AstraZeneca is pulling its COVID vaccine from the EU over a rare blood clooting side effect. Nevertheless, some experts claim that vaccine saved over 6M lives. Whatever U.S. CDC data on COVID is still available points to “a small rise” in cases later this summer, mostly from the growing KP.2 “FLiRT” variant. COVID patients and immunocompromised individuals are still using lots of healthcare resources, and the rise of resistant superbugs is developing alarmingly fast. According to the article, “It only takes about a year on average for bacteria to grow resistant to treatment, when they used to take 21 years to evolve back in the 1960s.” Engineers and medical professionals remain concerned about nanoplastics, between 1-1,000 nanometers wide. South Africa’s water shortage is projected to worsen through at least 2025. Nairobi’s water shortage continues, despite the city’s dams being filled with floodwater. Costa Rica is facing a Drought so bad it’s rationing electricity. Mexico City—the second-most-populous city (by metro area: 21.8M; São Paolo is #1, at 22M) in North America— is seeing more than 20% of freshwater sources exhausted, and rationing is not enough. It’s almost like we’re living at unsustainable levels of consumption… As Latin America warms (and suffers flooding), disease is becoming more common—as well as heat stroke & serious hunger. Benin is refusing Niger the permission to use its port to export oil, as a result of a border dispute. A paywalled study in Nature Water tested a new method for removing PFAS foam particles in water, with “near-complete destruction of PFAS in various water samples contaminated by the foams.” The process involves “ultra-violet (UV) light, sulfite, and a process called electrochemical oxidation” and does not require heat or high pressure. The number of U.S. states phasing out PFAS is growing. As forcible repatriations of thousands of Afghans continue, millions of Afghans are suffering from lack of humanitarian aid—aggravated by recent deadly flash floods in the beleaguered, landlocked, failed state. Yeasty superfungus Candida Auris infections were detected in 77 cases in Germany last year, authorities say. Candida Auris was only identified 15 years ago, but its three separate genetic variants (each on a different continent) have stealthily and stubbornly grown to pose a stealth threat to humankind. It is incredibly resistant to antifungal drugs, and it survives at higher temperatures than most other fungi. The WHO has listed it on a shortlist of top fungal pathogen dangers. 3 cats died from H5N1 in the United States last week. Some health professionals are getting more worried about a future H5N1 jump to become human-to-human transmissible, and claim that we are not ready as a species. Experts say we are not doing enough testing, and may already be in the prologue of a much more devastating pandemic. Scientists still say it is unlikely that a strain will make the critical mutation necessary, but the similarities between human and cow (and other mammal) flu receptors present potential complications. The world is supposedly being divided into three general trade blocs: U.S., China, and the non-aligned states. For better or worse, globalization is crumbling, and governments are imposing tariffs, attempting to reshore industries, and restructure debt & credit flows. A wave of Chinese espionage, much of it several years old, is sweeping Europe. Of particular concern is a hack of British military personnel information uncovered on Tuesday—which China denies. Similar espionage against the U.S. has reportedly cost the economy hundreds of billions per year. Kenya’s mission to stabilize Haiti is inching forward slowly. The Pentagon has ordered its 1,000 troopsto leave Niger. At least one Saudi villager was killed to make room for The Line, and reports claim Saudi forces have been given the green light to clear other people who get in the way of the development. Germany’s Defence Ministry is seriously considering recommending conscription for its 18-year olds later this summer. Displacement in Myanmarhas spiked over the past six months—and now counts 3M+ people since the February 2021 coup which sparked more open resistance. Tunisia ejected ~400 migrants into Libya. Kazakhstan is expelling Tajik migrants in far-ranging sweeps. In Lebanon, vigilante attacks against Syrians have become more common. Mauritania is conducting military drills along part of its border with Mali, after reports emerged of Malian soldiers attacking border settlements. A Hamas attack on Sunday, which killed 4 Israeli soldiers, reportedly pushed the Rafah invasion ahead of schedule. The IDF took over the Egypt-Gaza border, and is scaling up operations in southern Gaza. In response, the U.S. paused arms transfers to Israel. Any chance of a ceasefire, if there was ever really a credible chance, will have to wait. Diarrhea is soaring in Gaza, due in large part to a critical water shortage, caused by the destruction of wastewater treatment plants, the damage to water infrastructure, and large-scale displacement. A new evacuation order has commanded over 1M people in Gaza to leave before a more comprehensive invasion of Rafah begins. A day after President Putin was inaugurated for his fifth term, he ordered a wide strike at Ukrainian infrastructure across seven oblasts. Most of the missiles and drones were shot down. Already, Belarus conducted a military drill with missiles & planes capable of using nukes. In addition to extending Ukraine’s mobilization by another 90 days, the government has also allowing some convicts to fight on the battlefield in exchange for reduced sentences. Poland is allegedly considering repatriating thousands of draft-eligible Ukrainian men, and Germany is emphasizing the need for Ukrainian refugees to work. Japan is boosting investment in a hypersonic missile interceptor project with the United States. A large-scale Russian offensive has begun across the front-lines, particularly around Kharkiv. 2024.05.12 02:12 ben_watson_jr'Ihis' or That . How Zodiac hid a map with one word in a Bank Robbery Note . 1968
San Francisco 1968. An apparent bank robbery of a Wells Fargo Bank produced a 'Robbery Note' left behind that was signed by 'Zodiac'. It was apparently 17 days before the first known Zodiac Murder at Lake Herman Road. Zodiac Wells Fargo Bank Robbery Note Decoding ' This' 3 — Postimages (postimg.cc) The note seemed normal enough. It began saying, 'This is a 'Robbery' or did it? The word 'This' was spelled without crossing the 'T'. Even the FBI said that the note was so disfigured with odd letter characters that they were unable to use it as a decent comparison to a sample of some suspect that was being investigated in the case. Fast forward 50 plus years and here in Los Angeles our Investigator, Steven Butler, saw a post on Reddit about this note. He clicked the link and immediately noticed patterns similar to other coding methods used by the 'Zodiac'. In his mind, it was authentic, and he went about trying to decode it. One of the most significant anomalies he noticed was that the 'T' in the word This was not crossed. For 50 years the experts felt that was just another example of the Zodiac being stupid and unable to spell. However, Steven has long found that the miss-spelled words were actually embedded coded messages for a group of people using military intelligence techniques were employing to communicate plans and actions within the group without leaving any direct traceable communications. Going on a hunch, from a 'tip' he had received last year that one or more of the Zodiac members may have been stationed at Naval Air Station Almeada, he pulled up a map of the location thinking that the un-crossed 'T' curved may have been a representation of some unique geography. His hunch paid off in spades! The airbase and runway were located next to an inlet river separating Oakland and Almeada Air Base. The tight configuration of the runways and the extended left end formed a perfect 'h', of which the knee of that figure was directly across from a dock configuration that formed an 'unmistakable' dotted 'i' of which was the barrier for where ships stationed there docked. It was obvious that the 'S' represented a ship. It turns out that in late 1968 one of the most famous aircraft carriers, with the USS Navy's most Famous Names was docked there in preparation for a new deployment to Vietnam. Ford Fiesta 2011 noises Hey there so I recently bought a 2011 ford fiesta zetac auto with the known transmission thats prone to issues (didn't know till after purchasing) I have taken the car to the mechanics and got a variety of things fixed and full service done, however certain noises persist. At start up and low speeds/ coming to a stop it sounds like a clunking/ crunch/rattling noise from the Transmission area according to the mechanics this is where they pinpointed the sound to come from. The car drives completely fine shifts well and is fine once I'm past about 20KPH only notice the noise in these situations. The other noise is when I'm reversing up a slight incline it sounds like a squeek/ catching noise that stops when on flat ground Has anyone has similar issues? I'm wondering if it's the TCM which is apparently still under extended warranty if I go to ford here in AUS Please let me know if anyone has experienced similar and what It may be? I'm dreading the cost of repairs if it's not to do with TCM and have to pay out of pocket.

2024.05.11 04:58 Do_Not_Call_Me_MomMy husband went full Heisenberg, and 32 years of marriage has ended in devastation
TLDR; my husband was cooking drugs in his lab at work and also carried on a five year affair with a girl 35 years his junior (starting when she was 18) I’ve hidden it from our entire family for years so as not to upset or worry anyone, but my husband (let’s call him Joe, 56M, to whom I’ve been married for 32 years) has been struggling with increasingly worsening mental health for the past several years. Summer of 2022 he was an absolute mess, bursting into tears a propos of nothing, and saying very strange, dark things followed by a manic laugh that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. That summer I got a phone call from a police officer because he had stopped Joe for a minor traffic infraction and apparently Joe went on a rant about how the police and the government are against him. The police officer called me because I was listed as his emergency contact, and recommended I take him into the hospital for a 72 hour psychiatric hold. When Joe came home not long later he was outwardly calm. I asked about the police officer, and he said that the officer was exaggerating. So I didn’t take him into the hospital. In Yellowstone on vacation that summer his off-the-rails manic and depressed behaviour became very concerning and difficult to handle, and his blood pressure was incredibly high. I was so alarmed I took him into the ER in Bozeman, MT. He was evaluated by a psych physician who told him that he needed to come off the anti-depressant he was on because he was manic and bipolar; anti-depressants when prescribed to people with bipolar disorder (BD) make the mania much, much worse. For several years by that point Joe had sporadically been seeing doctors for his worsening mental health and one of them had diagnosed him with borderline personality disorder. Unfortunately, Joe has had long problems with medication non-compliance, and various doctors and therapists have cut him loose because he was not compliant with treatment. We rushed home from Yellowstone summer 2022, and got him in to see a psych doctor who confirmed the diagnosis of bipolar disorder. She prescribed Joe a mood stabilizer. He said he didn’t like how it made him feel, so he stopped taking it. She prescribed him a different mood stabilizer, and he did the same thing. He vehemently rejected the diagnosis of bipolar disorder and would only admit to depression, and would only accept being treated with the lowest dose of an anti-depressant called Prozac, even though anti-depressants are one of the worst drugs someone with bipolar disorder should take. Fast forward to summer 2023, and Joe’s mental health continued to worsen. I had to make a choice to take a work position in Austria, or stay in our home town and try to deal with Joe. However, he was still rejecting the doctors’ diagnoses, and me being in our home town clearly hadn’t been halting his downward slide so far, so I decided to go to Austria. Joe and I had video calls every day and he seemed more or less fine on the calls, but he would text me in the middle of the night his time, so it was clear he was not sleeping. Joe is extremely good at keeping himself together long enough to seem fairly normal to people, and that has unfortunately been to his detriment. When I got back from Austria in March, Joe was clearly even worse than he was before. There was now a paranoid aspect to him that hadn’t been there before, and he would say mean things to me, followed by that horrible manic laugh. He’s never been mean like that before in our entire 32 years of marriage. Then two hours later it was like nothing had happened. He couldn’t sit still, was talking a mile a minute, and was saying strange things and was easily confused. He had started cutting again, and told me that he blamed me for it (Joe has a long history of self-harm going back to when he was a teenager. Then, and now, he cuts himself on his arm as a form of releasing emotion. I only found out about his cutting in 2022 when I noticed fresh scars on his arm). Then just over a month ago came the night of April 2nd. Joe has a computer tablet that he keeps by the bed and he reads or watches videos with it every night. Every night soon after he would pretty much immediately fall asleep, but then would wake up a few hours later and be up for the rest of the night. That night he fell asleep as usual, but his tablet kept going off with notification sounds and it was bothering me. I tried to wake him up to get him to put it on silent mode, but he was un-rousable. His eyes were rolled into the back of his head and he just mumbled incoherently. The following morning Joe left for work early at the university where he works as he always did (he’d been working, and apparently working at a high enough level that his mental health had not attracted any attention). And then his tablet started going off again. I work from home, and annoyed, I opened it up to see if I could figure out how to turn the sound off so that I could get some work done in peace. The tablet turned on when I opened the cover. And what I found on that tablet has turned our world upside down and devastated our family. The tablet opened to a technical document that described the chemical process to manufacture MDMA (which is a street drug that is also called ecstasy). Thoroughly alarmed, I did what I have never done in 32 years of being married, because up until now I’ve always trusted my husband… I went through Joe’s internet search history. And I discovered that he had been ordering chemicals and lab glassware, and even more alarmingly, had been shopping online for stun guns and pepper spray. I immediately called his GP’s office to get advice on what to do. He had seen his GP three times in the prior two weeks because of his extremely high blood pressure and I had gone in with him to see if they could help with his mental health problems because he was so manic. But he denied to his GP that he had ever been diagnosed with bipolar disorder (his psych physician is not in the same health network as his GP, so his GP had none of Joe’s psych records). When I called his GP’s office on the morning of the 3rd in a panic to try to find out what to do given my discoveries on the tablet, the nurse told me that I immediately needed to get him to the ER for a psych assessment, and that if he didn’t go willingly the police would have to get involved. Joe came home a short time later and I told him what I had found on his tablet. He admitted that he was working on manufacturing MDMA in his lab at the university, and when I asked why he matter-of-factly pointed out that he has tools like a gas chromatograph and a mass spectrometer in his lab at the uni so that he could ensure purity. I told him that he needed to pack three days of clothes and come with me to the hospital or that the police would have to get involved. He begrudgingly came with me. In the ER he admitted to being suicidal for at least two years and that he had apparently made an attempt the year before. He also admitted to his history of self-harm. He would not admit to being extremely manic and bipolar despite the doctor pointing out he was in fact very manic. After many hours in the ER he was admitted to the hospital, and he was in there over a week until April 11th. While Joe was in the hospital, boxes were arriving in the mail to our house with chemicals, lab glassware, and a box full of many cans of pepper spray. The materials were disposed of. But then things got even worse. I decided to go through his tablet more thoroughly, and discovered he had been inhabiting quite dark corners of the internet. And then, much worse, I discovered texts between him and a very young woman who is 35 years younger than he is. She is our daughters’ age. Like him, she has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder. And like him, she doesn’t think there is anything wrong with her. They both re-affirmed to each other that there is nothing wrong with them and that the rest of the world just doesn’t understand what it is like to be special like they are. They apparently have been carrying on a very active online and texting relationship since 2019 and profess love for each other. She lives in Italy, and Joe had booked at trip to go to Italy next month that he told me was for a conference, but when I confronted him with the texts he admits that he was going there to see her. Joe told me that she understands him like no one else does, and that she (in his words), is “like heroin” to him. For that reason, I refer to as “that heroin chick”, which is about the least offensive phrase I can come up with to refer to her. She was 18 when their relationship started (he was 52). Going through the filing cabinet where Joe normally keeps all our bills and his various papers, I discovered our financials were in a horrific mess. And our taxes were due. When he’s well, Joe’s record keeping is impeccable, but what I found was just a nightmarish mess of jumbled papers. I also discovered hundreds and hundreds of pills. Apparently throughout the history of time Joe has never been medication compliant. He just hoards the pills. And then I discovered in our crawlspace a bizarre setup with a rack with about $1000 worth of electronics that were turned on and blinking away, a big CO2 cannister and lots and lots of tubing. When I asked him about it, Joe said he set it up because he was growing mushrooms down there. I don’t want to ask what kind. And then Joe confessed that back in 2022 he, in his words, got into “gunsmithing” using the university machine shop. Panicked, I asked him “Joe, are there firearms in our house?”, and he said “No, but anyways I never bought any ammunition”. The “but” tells me that somewhere in our house there is, or was, at least one firearm. And there may or may not be ammo. And then I discovered that I had been locked out of our main bank account that his pay goes into and from which most of our bills are paid, so I had no idea how much was in that account, and all the statements for it were missing from Joe’s filing cabinet. Joe denies that he got me locked me out, but the account was joint when it was set up, and now suddenly I don’t have access anymore so that I can check the balance, and all the past statements were missing. His credit card statements were also conspicuously missing. My pay is just a fraction of what Joe makes, and if he was lavishly spending money unbeknownst to me, we were going to be in deep financial trouble. In a panic to protect our liquid assets as much as I could, I transferred 90% of the money from our local joint account to an account under my name only, and then wrote myself a cheque from the other account I had been locked out of, and crossed my fingers it wouldn’t bounce (the cheques at least have both our names on them still). Luckily the cheque did not bounce. I wanted to move enough money that we could keep going for a few months no matter what else happened. Meanwhile, in the hospital for the first five days Joe refused to take any medication other than the lowest dose of Prozac. Finally, he begrudgingly agreed to start a mood stabilizeanti-psychotic drug called Latuda, but made it clear he was only doing it under duress. Unfortunately, while he was in there, he would not allow the hospital to release any information to me. Given the paranoid statements he had been making to me before and the stun guns and pepper spray, I was worried for my own safety. Joe has never been violent to me at all, but he has definitely been paranoid recently and I was definitely the main target of his paranoia, and he has given no good explanation for the stun guns and pepper spray (and then there is the uncertainty about whether or not he’s squirreled away homemade firearms in the house). I had to tell him that I wasn’t going to pick him up if he wasn’t going to let his doctors tell me what his mental state was, and that I didn’t feel safe with him in the house and he was going to have to find someplace else to go until we got things sorted out. He stayed in a hotel for the first week but came over during the day and helped with various house projects. By April 19th it was clear from his behaviour that the Latuda had made him quite a bit less paranoid, so I invited him to live back in the house and he’s our daughter’s old room now. While the Latuda helped with his paranoia and suicidality, it doesn’t treat mania, and Joe was still extremely manic when he left the hospital. Unfortunately, even though he was still very manic, the hospital released him with no aftercare plan, and it is clear that he is going to need extensive out-patient care for many weeks. While he was in the hospital I told the university he was going to be on extended leave, and he has been granted an initial six weeks, but it is easy to extend; at his faculty rank he has a huge amount of paid sick leave. At first Joe insisted he was going right back to work when he got out of the hospital, but because he was still extremely manic I was very much against that, especially since I know for a fact that he has drug manufacturing material set up in his lab because I could see in his internet search history he had bought other glassware and chemicals prior to me discovering his activities, and those materials were not in our house. I was worried he wanted to continue where he left off. In the first days after his release from the hospital, I scrambled to get him the intensive treatment he needs. He did have one appointment with his therapist he had been seeing last year (but then stopped when I went to Vienna). He invited me to the appointment. And then proceeded to lie to the therapist right in front of me, telling her that “My wife found on my tablet that I had been reading about MDMA, and she may see things differently, but that was it”. He knows that there were chemicals and labware delivered to our house while he was in the hospital, and he knows I have pictures of all that, and also screenshots of everything on his tablet. He knows that I had to consult with a criminal defense attorney. And then there was heroin chick, stun guns and pepper spray, locking me out of the shared account, and the gunsmithing. Joe also had an appointment with his old psych doctor the first week he was out and I went with him so that I could fill her in on his behaviour (unfortunately, all the times in the past seeing her by himself, Joe has been in denial of being bipolar and he is extremely good at masking his behaviours when needed). I described the drug manufacturing, the paranoia, the stun guns and pepper spray, heroin chick… everything. She had a stern talk with him and told him that unfortunately he is very intelligent and instead of using that intelligence to get healthy, he had been using it to mask all of his activities. She took him off the Prozac and added lithium to his Latuda to treat his mania. She is absolutely correct. Joe is unfortunately far too intelligent for his own good. He is in denial that he’d done anything wrong or that he’s seriously ill. To him, everything he did seemed perfectly normal and logical (from his manic logical point of view, why wouldn’t you manufacture drugs in your lab, because you have the tools to ensure they are pure). Joe unfortunately is in the 50% of people with bipolar disorder who are completely unaware of their manic behaviour, even when they are completely off the rails. They are addicted to the manic high, and thus are extraordinarily difficult to convince to be medication compliant. Anyway, just when you think things can't get even worse they do; last week I discovered that Joe had a secret social media account on Tumblr, and on it he had posted a picture of a girl passed out with a needle in her arm and a heroin cooking spoon and a second needle in the foreground. He had superimposed several hearts above her head. The girl looked a lot like his young girlfriend in Italy. I checked the date on the post, and it was last May. It occurred to me he was on a trip, ostensibly for work, in Europe last May. When he got home that day, I confronted him with the evidence that he had used federal grant money to fund what was ostensibly a work trip but was really a trip to see he his girlfriend in Italy. He confirmed it. The look on his face when he confirmed it broke me; a mixture of smugness, along with annoyance that I was even bringing it up. I also told him I knew they did heroin together. He denied that part, but I don't believe him. He then confessed that in the trip he was planning this month to see her, he was going to bring her some MDMA that he had manufactured. Because apparently Italy is fresh out of ecstasy. The next day I went into the doctor and got tested for HIV, hepatitis, and every STD known to mankind. Joe expressed anger that I was casting aspersions upon the character of his girlfriend by assuming that she was a junkie and might have STD’s; “You don’t know her" Something fundamental broke inside me as I lay on that table at the doctor’s office and they did what needed to be done to get their samples for testing. I felt like I had been raped. It was then and there that I knew that as much as I had loved the man my husband used to be, I couldn’t continue in the relationship. We’re currently working on a legal separation agreement, and so far it is amicable. He will buy me out of my half of the house. I am working on collecting my things to move across the country to the same area our daughters live. It is such a sad process because I don’t want to leave anything I don’t want heroin chick to touch or even look at, so I am taking all the pix of our kids and various mementos. Meanwhile, Joe seems impatient that I should just get out of the house already. He clearly wants me gone ASAP so he can go off his meds and have his girlfriend shack up with him. The entire family gives it less than five years before he is dead or incarcerated. And less than six months before heroin chick is living in our house. I’m reeling from all that has happened and I’m still in shock. It will take years to come to some kind of acceptance of what has happened. And financially speaking both of our retirements have been torpedoed. When he's well, Joe is a wonderful husband and father. When he's not well he's a completely shit human being, and is utterly unapologetic for anything he does. Anyway… that is the story of how my mentally ill husband of 32 years went full Heisenberg and had an affair with a teenager, and now we’re separating and likely will ultimately end up divorced.

Exotic Car Rental Damage Claim DENIED? Looking for someone who knows auto property damage insurance claims / experience interpreting auto policy or any case law regarding car rentals….. This will be a long one. I need to keep some things vague but - My friend owns an exotic car rental company. One of the vehicles in the fleet is a Ferrari that is involved in this incident. May of last year, “Bob” rented the Ferrari , provided a valid insurance policy to cover damages, should there be an accident during his rental period. Bob brought the car back with dents and scrapes, and a ripped seat. Upon further review, my friend found a reckless driving ticket inside the car for Bob’s 18 year old son. Turns out Bob allowed his son to take the Ferrari for the weekend, which is against the rental contract. Damage was noted on the contract and upon driving, it was evident the transmission was not functioning. The car was dropped off at Ferrari dealership the next day and they confirmed that due to the handling of the vehicle during this rental period, caused the transmission to overheat and malfunction, in their words, due to “abuse of the vehicle”. We have this in writing from the Ferrari dealership , along with an estimate to repair part of the transmission. The claim was reported to Bob’s insurance, Geico. For the transmission damage and the exteriointerior damage. Mind you, this was in May 2023 and this is still ongoing. Geico refused to come see the car for their own estimate and said we just had to send them an estimate. Even after requesting an adjuster multiple times. They verbally agreed to pay for damages at that point and said “fix the car, we will send you a check afterward” we have a voicemail of this. I worked for auto claims so I know this was completely mishandled and geico acknowledges they mishandled the initial reporting of the claim. The car sat in the shop for almost 9 months (a whole separate issue, as the shop was not equipped to fix it and kept receiving the wrong parts) so it ended up being taken to another shop. This shop confirmed the transmission needed to be completely replaced, making a $10,000 claim a $65,000 claim. Geico adjuster finally comes out and agrees about transmission damage. Writes estimate and includes all exterior dents and transmission. Wrote cause of damages “vandalism”. Geico sent my friend a denial letter on the basis of “we don’t cover mechanical failure” as it’s a policy exclusion. My friend was making the argument that this is vandalism, as the person who was driving the vehicle at the time renter gave the vehicle to someone who is not on the rental contract, who is not even on their own policy as his son doesn’t even live with him. In further discussion with Geico, the supervisor who denied the claim did not reach out to the auto tech, did not even look at the estimate because she didn’t know there were also dents on the car and a ripped seat. She said she would “look into the dents” and continued to state “we don’t cover mechanical damage unless there’s a collision involved”. She also refused to send his written policy in full and only sent a couple sentences involving mechanical damages. There’s no question as to who is liable for the damages but my questions are: Is there a permissive use issue here? My friend didn’t grant the son permission to have this rental. Can Geico deny the claim further based on the fact that the son wasn’t even supposed to be driving the vehicle? Should we backdate a police report reporting the car as stolen? We still have the physical reckless driving ticket written to the son. Can/should these damages qualify under comprehensive coverage, as this is vandalism by a person who was operating the vehicle without consent of the rental company? My friend wants to avoid filing suit as the renter likely has $0 to pay once a judgment is made. Cannot use the Ferrari primary coverage due to a policy exclusion that they will not cover any physical damage incurred during a rental period. (Does uninsured motorist coverage come into play if Geico continues to deny?) Any and all help is appreciated.
