Someone asked for an explanation of Barthandelus' motives in Final Fantasy XIII, and I wrote out an explanation but reddit will NOT let me post it as a comment, presumably because it's too long, so I'm posting it here. Use this is a refresher if you're feeling confused or lost after playing Final Fantasy XIII or need to be caught up on the somewhat convoluted lore.
Big spoilers for Final Fantasy XIII and a little bit of XIII-2 as well.

When the being that the fal'Cie call "The Maker" created the world, Gran Pulse, they created fal'Cie and humans both. The actual mechanisms by which that happens isn't explained in the first game but the important thing is that the Gods created fal'Cie and humans. It's important to remember that the Maker themself is NOT a fal'Cie, they're just the deities who created them, along with humans. Etro, Pulse, Lindzei, Bhunivelze, they're their own race of being simply called "gods." It is never clear who "The Maker" actually is: we know that Bhunivelze is the ACTUAL maker of Pulse, Lindzei, and Etro, but within the universe of the game, the developers have said that depending on the fal'cie who's talking, they either mean Pulse or Lindzei depending on where their loyalties lie.
Gran Pulse was the home of all living things, human, fal'cie, wild animals, etc. At some point, a contingent of fal'cie came together to create Cocoon, by ripping up massive chunks of the land and creating the floating sphere, and claimed they did so with the help of the goddess Lindzei, and began to tempt humans to join this floating paradise where they would be cared for and protected by the fal'Cie who served her there. The people of the world who worshipped Pulse saw this as heretical, and believed Cocoon to be a nest of vipers, and they went to war, the Pulse fal'Cie and their many l'cie fighting against Cocoon's fal'Cie who served Lindzei and had rebelled against their maker. This is the War of Transgression, so called because the Pulsians viewed the creation of cocoon as a "transgression" against their Pulse. It is unclear if Pulse and Lindzei were DIRECTLY involved in this war, as it's implied that they, along with all the other gods, vanished long before civilization sprang up.
The reasoning behind all this was a lie: all fal'Cie, both Pulse and Cocoon fal'Cie, were working together. They never actually cared about which gods side anyone was on, or what humans worshipped, because humans were just animals to them, tools that they could use as l'cie to carry out their will. All the fal'Cie desperately missed their creators, the gods themselves, and wanted to find them, be reunited with them, but they had left this realm / dimension entirely, and gone on toward the "Unseen Realm," which is essentially what waits on the other side of death. Whenever a person does, their spirit passes through a doorway into the Unseen Realm, into Valhalla, where the goddess Etro places their soul inside of a new body in the mortal realm, and they're reborn. The fal'Cie reasoned that if they created a giant floating world, filled it with millions upon millions of humans, then they could bring the whole thing crashing down and kill all those humans at once, which would cause the gate to the unseen realm to open wide to accept the influx of souls traveling through from the mortal realm, and THIS would be the fal'Cie's chance to reach through the portal and call out the gods: Bhunovelze, Pulse, Lindzei, it didn't matter, they just wanted to be reunited with their creators.
As Barthandelus explains, fal'Cie are limited in what they're able to do individually. Some fal'Cie like Atomos dig and dig, excavating the land searching for Pulse, or some remnant of him. Some fal'Cie like Bismarck maintain water and aquatic life, some like Carbuncle generate food and electricity. So, fal'Cie take humans as their l'cie subjects because humans have free will and can do anything, especially when gifted with a fal'cies power. That's why they use humans as tools. In the War of Transgression, the fal'cie Anima chose Vanille and Fang as l'cie, and gave them the focus of destroying cocoon by transforming into the beast Ragnarok. It's important to remember Anima did this conspiring WITH the cocoon fal'cie, they weren't ever ACTUALLY on opposing sides, they just had the humans warring with each other to make them more easy to conscript and use as tools, because humans have free will and have to be manipulated to do a fal'cies bidding. Fang was ready to destroy cocoon if it would bring an end to the war and protect the people she loved, but Vanille couldn't bear the guilt of murdering millions of people, and she essentially chickened out, she refused to turn into Ragnarok, so Fang became Ragnarok herself - an incomplete, underpowered version of Ragnarok that was incapable of fully destroying Cocoon, just making a big dent in the side. The details of this get confusing in the game because Vanille is so consumed by guilt that she's lying through her teeth about what happened, and since Fang has lost her memory she lies to Fang and says that SHE (Vanille) was the one who scarred cocoon, when in fact it was the other way around.
The fal'cies initial plan was to have Ragnarok destroy cocoon, and by bringing it down to the ground they would murder not only the billions of humans living inside cocoon but all of the humans down on the ground too, exterminating all the humans at once and ripping open a massive door into the unseen realm through which they could cross to reunite with their Maker. But the plan failed, because Vanille refused - even when put under dire circumstances, l'cie still have free will, and they can be compelled, but never outright FORCED, to do anything they refuse to do. So, Anima took the now exhausted Fang and guilt ridden Vanille and put them both into crystal stasis, stored them within the vestige, and conspired with Barthandelus to have the vestige pulled up from pulse during the post-war rebuilding efforts when the cocoon fal'cie were scooping up land from Gran Pulse to fix the exterior shell that had been battered.
Their first plan having failed, the fal'Cie waited until 500 years later (the exact reason they waited this long isn't clear, presumably it was so Barthandelus could quell people's fears long enough to get them back into a state of complacency where they were easier to control), and then when the time they've chosen comes, Barthendlus tells Anima to awaken Vanille and Fang to continue their focus to destroy cocoon, leading to the series of events we see in the game that causes the Purge, which it itself a means of both stoking terror in the people of cocoon and making them more willing to go to war against themselves and cause more mass death, and a means to gather new l'cie to do their bidding. Anima brands Serah a l'cie and tasks her with the focus of gathering more l'cie candidates who can become Ragnarok and destroy cocoon from within, which is why she turns to crystal when Lightning and the gang show up, her focus was completed.
Barthendelus failed in his first attempt to have Ragnarok (in the form of Fang) destroy cocoon from the outside, so his new plan is to destroy cocoon from within, by goading the l'cie into killing him so he can merge with Orphan, who is the heart of cocoon, and then goad the l'cie into killing Orphan. When Orphan dies, all of cocoons power goes out because all the cocoon fal'cie go dormant, and cocoon begins to plummet to the ground, ultimately saved by Vanille and Fang who finally do transform into Ragnarok but use that immense power to create a crystal pillar from the fires of the volcanoes within Pulse and the mass snowflake crystal shards scattered across Pulse from where the first shell was battered. Because of this action, both cocoon and Gran Pulse are saved, and the fal'cie have failed irrevocably at their goal of using billions of humans as a death sacrifice to open up the gate to the unseen realm, and they all go dormant.
There are still many unanswered questions. Why did Barthandelus need to go through the extra steps of fusing with Orphan in order to be killed? What actually happened to the humans of Pulse, who appear to have all been wiped out sometwren between the war of transgression and now, leaving only fragmentary clues behind? Did the fal'cie always intend to die at the same time as the humans in order to pass through the gate themselves? Did any of the gods ever hear their pleas? Why did they all settle on such a convoluted plot rather than just creating l'cie of immense power and ordering them to murder each other? Why the added centuries of manipulation instead of something more direct? Ultimately, we're left with more questions than answers. Everything to do with orphan is vague and abstract and never properly explained, and even the method by which Lightning and crew come back from being transformed into c'ieth is never specified. The original game doesn't even give a proper explanation as to WHY Vanille and Fang turn into crystal, and why the others are released from crystal stasis while standing in the plains of Pulse.
The explanation in later games is that the goddess Etro intervened at several points: first to spare Vanille who refused to become Ragnarok by turning her to crystal, then sparing Lightning's party along with Serah and Dajh from their fate as l'cie crystals, but that in doing so she fucked up the timeline and caused the massive splintering we see in XIII-2.
So, in the end, there is an explanation, but it's an incredibly complicated one that is not very well told within the game. Even with all the datalog information it's incredibly hard to piece together, as are many characters motivations and histories. But I hoped this has helped to make it slightly less oblique.

Hello everyone, I’m a longtime lurker of this subreddit. In all likelihood you’ve seen my posts or my comments about the relationship I got out of fifteen years ago.
A while back, I wrote a post about abusers in therapy. I put that out there because a lot of people ask will therapy or anger management help my abuser. It’s a well established fact that it won’t and also will backfire.
There’s another thing that keeps coming up that we need to talk about: the five love languages.
Just to get it out of the way, I read up briefly on the five love languages. I personally think it’s pseudoscience. The person who wrote it had no qualifications or experience to be writing any theories on how humans or relationships work. That is my opinion.
Something I keep seeing on here far too often is a girl is being abused and wondering if the cause of her problem is a mismatch in love language. It makes me sad to see others say things like:
“He keeps grabbing me and groping me after I asked him to stop/told him I don’t like it/hurts/makes me feel violated. But he said touch is his love language. Is it a love language mismatch?”
“He makes me spend egregious amounts of money on him even after I’ve told him I don’t have the money/it’s putting me into bankruptcy. But he says gift giving is his love language. Is it a love language mismatch?”
“He wants me to say nice things to him/not call him out on his bull. But he said words of affirmation is his love language. Is it a love language mismatch?”
“He wants me to spend every second of my life with him to the point that I have no time for anything or anyone else. Is it a love language mismatch?”
“I work more than he does, yet he won’t lift a finger for household chores/childcare. But he says acts of service is his love language. Is it a love language mismatch?”
I stated in my post about abusers in therapy that abusers who go to therapy will become fluent in ‘therapy talk’ and weaponize it against their victim. They’ll use therapy talk to legitimize their point of view and behaviors, and invalidate yours.
If therapy is subject to this diatribe, then concepts like the love languages aren’t exempt either. It would appear abusers are now weaponizing the love languages to justify their behavior and invalidate and discredit their partner’s reasonable objection to their diatribe.
If your partner is violating your boundaries, that’s abuse. Full stop. If you think they don’t know what they’re doing, they know. If you’re wondering why you keep telling them what they’re doing hurts or bothers you yet they keep doing it; it’s because they KNOW it hurts or bothers you.
Abuse of any kind IS NOT a love language. Boundary violation IS NOT a love language. FULL STOP.

For a long time now I have wanted to create a model capable of playing a game. It was one of those projects that seemed the kind of fun that got me interested in programming in the first place. The problem was that despite there being several tutorials on how to go about doing this, all of them relied upon deprecated python libraries such as gym. Upgrading the environments to gymnasium, the format currently maintained, seemed a daunting task that made me think twice before I started.
Then when GPT4o came out, and was capable of handling conversations in a way that would allow me to debug my issues upgrading in a natural style, I decided I would give it a go. Using the old Mario api as a base, I employed GPT4o to help me design the structure of my model. Having completed that, I then employed GPT4o to help me create custom wrappers that built upon those layers to upgrade the output format from the style used in the gym library to the one in gymnasium.
As I worked my way through the layers, I encountered numerous errors and flaws with how the code handled unexpected inputs, but with the help of GPT4o I was able to quickly resolve these errors, and in a short time I had succeeded in building a set of custom wrappers which correctly passed the input from layer to layer in the upgraded format and was able to begin training my deep learning model to play Mario. After 1,000,000 steps in the game, my model had gotten to the point where it was able to get halfway through the first level of Super Mario Bros, and with more training and time or perhaps utilizing a less detailed game window the model would become capable of completing the entire first level.

As I worked my way through the layers, I encountered numerous errors and flaws with how the code handled unexpected inputs, but with the help of GPT4o I was able to quickly resolve these errors, and in a short time I had succeeded in building a set of custom wrappers which correctly passed the input from layer to layer in the upgraded format and was able to begin training my deep learning model to play Mario. After 1,000,000 steps in the game, my model had gotten to the point where it was able to get halfway through the first level of Super Mario Bros, and with more training and time or perhaps utilizing a less detailed game window the model would become capable of completing the entire first level.

Why is this? Are critics mostly shills? Is it suffering from review bombing? Is this just an artefact of RT's algorithm, where anything above 3/5 is considered "fresh," meaning a bunch of mediocre-to-good reviews can result in a high score if few critics outright diss it? I did a deep dive to try to figure out what's going on. Full disclosure: I watched the first two eps, thought they were pretty good, but nothing special yet. I'm cautiously optimistic for the rest of the season. I don't have any agenda here, other than trying to better understand these numbers. Critic Reviews I extracted all the numbers I could find on the RT reviews (all the reviews in the form of 4/5 or 6/10, etc). Was able to get numbers for 45 reviews out of a total of 108 on RT. The average works out to be 67%. I'd therefore argue that the true critic score should be 67% if RT's scoring system made more sense, but it is what it is. Interesting to note that there seems to be a slight bimodal distribution in the reviews. The first 29 reviews average 74%, and the later 16 reviews average only 54%. Why is this? I suspect it's because the early batch of reviewers had access to the first four episodes, while the later ones have only seen the first two episodes, like the rest of us. This implies that the series gets better over the next two episodes. Audience Reviews I pulled similar numbers for the audience reviews. There are a LOT of audience reviews, so I only went with the first 45 listed on RT to keep the sample size same as the critic scores. Using just this limited sample, the average works out to 63%, far higher than the 26% listed across all audience reviews. 27 of these reviews are 3/5 or higher (indicating "fresh"), meaning RT's scoring method would give it a 60%. Out of those reviews, seven of them were half star reviews, and 16 of them were 5 star reviews, which the rest being pretty uniformly distributed between those extremes. Taking a quick skim through the rest of the reviews, it seems these numbers are pretty consistent. Why such a huge discrepancy between the 63% in audience review average, vs. the 26% RT audience score? I'm guessing it's because for those that actually bothered to write a review, they were more generous to the show. I'm guessing there's a huge pile of half star ratings without reviews bringing this number down, numbers that I can't find since RT only shows them when accompanied by written out reviews. These would be the review bombers. Conclusion If we ignore RT's algorithms and only look at the average of critic reviews, we get a score of 67%. If we look at the average of audience scores that actually have written out reviews, we get 63%. So the critic vs audience scores, in this analysis, would actually match pretty well. I have the carfax on this one - 196k miles currently. It has had O2 sensors replaced and fuel injectors flushed, routine MNTC items with filters and tires and such. But, nothing beyond that.
My question is, with them working on it for awhile and them getting in that deep - what else should I replace or update? I don’t wanna run into even more issues down the road, especially ones that require another pull.

My powers are certainly...unique, that's for sure. For one, it lets me make unstable cracks in reality if I'm not careful with my spells. These dimensional cracks can grow and get out of hand pretty fast if left unchecked, so I try to close them up before they can become dangerous to anyone.
And another power I've discovered is that I can make stable cracks in reality that can become portals to other dimensions, though it does require major concentration to make them portals, and not unstable - and I do like making portals to the anime series that I watch to get anime powers.
I'm still what you'd consider a 'low-level' sorcerer - I'm nowhere near the reality-breaking magic of the Council or the most powerful of sorcerers, even with my extra powers - and I'm okay with that. I am using debian 12 "mx linux to be specific" Having used both gnome and kde there was the same problem which is that the right alt key was mapped to that strange ISO lvl3 key on non us keyboard "arabic in my case" so both DEs had a section in there settings where I could resolve this problem, but now I started using sway wm, so I have to do all stuff mnaually, I cannot find any working manual solution , all of them are talking about xmodmap and changing keycodes which seems to be no achievable when i tried, I tried to execute a command to make the alt key code seem to be the same as when U was using gnome which was xmodmap -e "keycode 108 = Alt_R Meta_R Alt_R Meta_R" But it always ignore my fourth entry and always be like Alt_R Meta_R Alt_R So how can I fix this annoying problem?

If we had the kind of wastewater surveillance, we have right now, we probably would not have missed the first several community outbreaks in the United States. If in the months leading up to 2020, we were trying to implement a plan to vaccinate vulnerable workers at wet markets, we might’ve gotten ahead of the whole thing. What if contact tracing and high-risk person surveillance had started in January 2018? What if the COVID-19 scientific conferences had begun prior to the pandemic instead of after? I virtually attended two this week.
I do wish we were doing a lot more. I think the strategy of leading the virus rip through cattle and die out is dangerous. I worry that the clade tearing through bird populations around the world and repeatedly re-introducing itself into mammalian populations is out of control.

I wasn’t involved in the COVID response nor am I involved in this one. But I work in public health research and I see the hard work that people are doing. It’s very admirable and it is moderately comforting. Unqualified claims that we’re making all the same mistakes over again are demonstrably false and rather insulting to the extremely high stress work that my colleagues (but not me, I do easy armchair stuff) are doing.
I know people are probably going to lie and pretend I said this isn’t a big deal. It is. But find a more credible way to make that point so that people won’t dismiss you.

Backstory:
I (15M) was talking to this girl one day at a joint schools event (we go to different schools). I thought she was quite funny and nice to talk to so I got her number + snap. All good at this point. We texted on snap for a while and after about a week I worked up the courage to ask her out on a coffee date. She said yes. We met up and the date went really well, we talked about lots of things. Everything seemed fine at this point until the next day when i got to school. Had water thrown on me and someone shout 'P3DO!'. At this point I was confused until one of my friends pointed out that she was a freshman. Let me be clear. I had no clue, and even if i did know, I came to find out after asking her that the age gap was only 5 months.
Anyways, for weeks now ive been pushed, shoved, called a p3do, predator, "jail sentence waiting to happen". I want to ask two questions. a) Is there really something I did wrong here? b) how do i get this to stop?

I’m male, 25, have a background in landscaping, irrigation installation, and labor work in general.
I, like many others, have been getting hit constantly with this whole FIFO in Australia on social media. I never really thought much about the type of work, but it made me curious.
I know that they aren’t telling the truth about unskilled labor (I don’t expect to be making nearly or over $100k for no skills,) and it would be absolutely difficult to get in.
So here are my questions:
Where did you all start to be able to do this? And follow up, what would you recommend for a big finer interested in possibly doing this type of work?
How would I, from Canada, be able to get in to one in Australia? I say Australia because I’ve always wanted to go, and if I ever want to go there at this point with how expensive life is, it would have to be while working.
Again, I know the stuff on social media isn’t all (if any) true. But I’m curious and everything I’m looking at says this skilled job or that. So I’m curious what you, the hard working that know what’s needed more, would suggest to get my foot in the door to actually get a good job there vs those who expect to make a fortune with no skills.

I live in an apartment complex, the common areas electricity of my building it's been off for months. A month ago I was walking down the stairs miss the last 2 steps and twisted my right foot when landed on the floor, fell and hurt myself. It wasn't that big of a deal, the pain last 1 or 2 days and I was just fine, I called the apartment office to let them know what happened, they say "we're sorry, we will send somebody to take care of the electricity problem". After that we still have no electricity in the common areas of my building. Last night I was walking down the stairs again, I was holding trash bags and thinking about being carefully with the last steps and I don't know how I miss it again because it is really dark. Now I twisted my left foot, this time was bad, I had to visit the emergency room, pay for medical bills and I had to miss work today. Is this a good reason to sue this people? Should I call a lawyer? I'm in real pain and I will have to miss a couple more days of work probably. I would like to add that WE pay for "common areas electricity" it is listed like that on our monthly bill.

We found a place that is perfect for a monastery. This is Seifriedsberg CastleAnd finally we found a place that is perfect for a monastery because it is located in a secluded place and surrounded by nature. This is Seifridsberg Castle. Now we have to buy it. And then it will be monastery property. The first mention of the castle dates back to 1251. It was built by Bishop Siegfried III, Count von Rehberg. The castle consists of a three-storey main building and a side wing. The main building and the entrance are connected by a wall with a tiled roof, forming an enclosed courtyard. In 1851, a forest park was laid out in front of the palace, in which shrubs and trees from all over the world were planted, including a ginkgo tree known for its healing properties, sequoias, rhododendron bushes, which are now more than 100 years old and are a natural wonder when they bloom in May and June. Seifridsberg Castle The castle is conveniently located an hour's drive from Munich, and the number of brethren will hopefully increase. We will finally be able to build a real church instead of a house church, a monastic building for the brethren, a hotel for pilgrims, additional workshops, and further development of our production. During my studies, I realized that while the Old Testament is present on this subject and even attempts to give answers, it does not solve the problem as a whole. But in the holy fathers and in Christian literature this subject is not so much covered. This means that the problem is solved through the New Testament, through Christ. We had a messy breakup (f18) (m23) and it was not because we were arguing or anything. Honestly we hardly fought in our relationship and he knew it was always his fault when we did (he would agree it’s his fault). We were a long distance online relationship and had reasons we didn’t meet yet even if we dated for 5 months and talked for 4 months but it didn’t affect us at all.
We broke up less then a month ago cause of his realisation that his family won’t accept me and that it crushed his hopes of being with me. The day he found that out he ghosted me. I was texting him like crazy ngl because I was confused cause we were doing soo good and he replied a little over a week about his family and that he’s soo sorry. When he sent that message, I replied a couple hours later because I was out and I never got a reply back again. I tried calling him, texting him like crazy because I wanted one more text so we can say goodbye. Instead one day after work I went on Snapchat and saw his account has disappeared from my list completely and I can’t find it on any other person account aswell. So I guess he deleted Snapchat as he would only use it to talk to me. I can’t find any way to text him or call him as he currently is not in the same country as me and idk where he lived in that country.
Even though he treated me awful at the end I still love him sooo much and have cried almost daily because of it. I got ghosted on the 16th May and I feel like I’m doing worse somedays as he was my first love and the guy I showed my body to. My sex drive has also reduced soo much without him and I can’t do anything sexual with myself cause I think of him and end up crying. Can anyone tell me how long it took them to stop caring about their ex? And stop thinking that they will never get better ? I genuinely don’t think I can find someone better than my ex and I hate this feeling..
